Book of Night is the adult debut by Holly Black. I would call this urban fantasy/horror. There is a girl, Charlie, with a past. There are people, called gloamists, who can manipulate their shadows. There are people without shadows and shadows without people. (They’re Blights and are dangerous) Charlie has to find a missing book or bad things will happen. The story and background building took a while to get into. The final act was better and there was a surprising reveal. I kept thinking of Peter Pan (Wendy sewing his shadow) but there was never any mention of that. I was also reminded of The Book of M (where everyone loses their shadow) The whole story felt weird and I had some interesting dreams. 💭 Read the acknowledgments to see some interesting comments from Black about the writing process for this book. The Lost Apothecary One book that intrigued me in a way, which is unexplainable. The way women help women through medicines; deadly and life saving, to bring harmony in each other’s life. Jesus, only 10 books left? I seriously wasn’t expecting to be this close already.

I don’t know what happened with this one. I was really enjoying it, and I thought it would be 4 or 5 stars but no, it ended up just being very bland in the later third of the book for me.

I think the thriller genre just isn’t for me, I always want them to go harder or darker than they do.

The writing was good. I really liked the mains character. But it just was mid-lane. Not very outstanding nor a flop. It was okay, and enjoyable just not for a long term thing. Definitely unhauling it.
