Captain Pike, Dean Cornwell (1892-1960)

I'm in love with this dramatic painting of a ship's officer facing Age of Sail-era justice, which was sent to me by @habemuscarnificem. After much searching online, and seeing this credited as an illustration for every maritime story from Treasure Island to Moby-Dick (neither of which involve anyone being hanged from the yardarm), I came across the painting's title, Captain Pike. However, I'm having a hard time finding out who Captain Pike was, or whether he was a real or fictional sea captain. Age of Sail Tumblr, can you help me out?

One of my ideal destiel weddings happens mid-battle. Dean is dodging this week's monster, Cas at his back fighting something else equally as sinister. There is, yet again, another apocalypse looming over them. Team Free Will (2.0) is once again backed into a corner. They don't think they're making it out of this alive.

Between slashes of his weapon, Dean asks over the noise. "Cas, will you marry me?"

Cas almost gets himself stabbed, but he says. "Really? Here and now? Out of every opportunity we had?"

"Yes! There's no need to bitch about it. I love you, yada yada, some end of the world crap about not having any regrets before we die."

"I love you too." Cas' angel blade finally pierces the enemy's skin. "And yes, I would love to be your husband!"

"SAMMY!"

From across the room, or field, or road, Sam yelps over the sound of his own fight. "What?!"

"You went to law school, can you officiate for me and Cas?"

"That's not how it works, Dean!"

"Then fucking do it anyway!"

“Because,” Balthazar said with a shrug, “you’re the most luminous captain—or, should I say, commodore—on this island. The highest earner, the highest success rate. You’re practically a myth. Even in the short time I’ve been here, I’ve heard the stories about you and your family.”

A muscle in Dean’s jaw jumped, his entire body coiling. He knew the stories. He didn’t need them recounted, but Balthazar did it for him anyway, as if it was a tale on par with Odysseus and Hercules.

“How does it go? That Poseidon fashioned your father from reef and seafoam—his agent on the land, tasked with defending the god’s kingdom by feeding as many of its adversaries to the water as he could? But he needed a weapon, so the king of the ocean sent him a woman, and that’s how you came about. Half-man, half-sea.”

Airily, he continued, “It’s quite charming, isn’t it? The belief the others have in you, the so-called Sword of the High Seas.”

Dean hated the fairytale. He was just a regular guy, nothing more. But pirates would believe anything, and Sam always said it was good to let them spread the story. That they could use it as a shield against their enemies—but Dean wasn’t a shield.

That was the second half of the story, the one that Balthazar hadn’t seemed to have heard about yet. 

That one day there’d come another, a protector; and that together, the two of them would unite the Pirate’s Republic. That no one would ever have to worry about empires or shackles or colonial rule ever again. Some people even said this newcomer would be Poseidon himself, raised from the water.

It was a bunch of bullshit. Dean was no savior, and he certainly would never fight in the service of a god or a king.

“Yeah, and what does that make Sam, huh?” Dean answered dryly. “A musket ball?”

“What do you mean you haven’t been able to figure out who else other than James and Nick are planning to rebel?” Dean seethes, his hands clutching the bottle of rum he had been nursing all afternoon. The stress of possible mutiny caused his mind to spiral, to others on deck he seemed calm and collected but to his two right hand men, he was a wreck.

He wanted nothing more than to protect his lady from all of the havoc that was winding around him, but in the process he had pushed Y/N away. Nights spent between the sheets were few and far between, their usual love making turned into Y/N falling asleep alone while Dean planned his next move while chasing the bottom of the bottle. She knew he was busy and worried about the possibility of mutiny so she paid no mind to the lack of attention.

Dean is breathing heavily, the veins in his head feeling as if they are going to pop as he stands before his best men.

“Well, are either of you going to answer me?” he questions as he begins to pace back and forth, the silence driving him even crazier. When the silence gets too loud, he marches his way to the door of his quarters, throwing it open and walking up the stairs to the deck. He only had two names under his belt, James and Nicholas, without the remaining men planning to turn on Dean, he barely has a chance to get in front of the problem before it became a full fledged mutiny.

Once he reaches the deck, he is distracted by a familiar sound, her laugh. It is loud and sweet, like music to Dean’s ears. He turns towards the sound, smiling before he sees her. When his eyes finally find her, he is overcome with a sense of rage he isn’t sure he has ever felt before.

She is sat with James, her arm draped in his as he laughs loudly with her. Dean immediately marches towards the pair, quickly grabbing her arm before dragging her back towards his quarters. She begins to protest but quiets down once she realizes just how angry Dean is.

He finally releases her arm once they are safely inside his quarters, Y/N immediately sitting down on the bed with a small huff.

“What is your problem?” she questions as she leans back against the headboard of their shared bed, hands picking at the frayed ends of their quilt. Dean just laughs at her words as he runs his hand down his face, rubbing at the skin as if he is trying to wash off the day’s grime.

“What is my problem? What is your problem?” he yells, his voice booming off of the walls causing Y/N to flinch.

He sheds his coat, throwing it over the back of his chair before walking to the small bar in his room, grabbing a new bottle of rum and cracking it open. He stays quiet as he takes several pulls from the bottle, not even looking in her direction as he ponders what to say next.

“You- You’re sitting out there just laughing with James? James of all people?” he seethes as he approaches the bed, towering over her. She looks small as he continues to yell at her, tears forming in her eyes while she reluctantly listens to him ramble about the possibility of a mutiny.

“De- love, I- He was so kind to me,” she sniffles, raising her hand to wipe at the tears and snot that have accumulated on her face.

“Kind? Do you not understand what is at stake here? My whole livelihood Y/N! I could lose everything, including you!” He takes another pull from the bottle of alcohol, his eyes never leaving Y/N’s as she continues to cry.

“I didn’t know Dean.'' Her response is flat, her gaze adverting Dean’s. She wants to curl up into a ball and forget any of this is happening, go back to when it was easy and lovely between the two of them.

“You never talk to me about anything Dean, you send me away when you have to talk to Castiel or Benny. You never bring the issues up to me when we are in bed together at the end of the night. You barely touch me let alone speak to me about anything that matters.”

She pulls herself out of bed, making her way to the door, but Dean is quick to reach out and grab her, pulling her into his chest that is still heaving.

“Fuck- Darling I’m sorry, I am so sorry…” Y/N frowns when she smells just how much alcohol is on Dean’s breath. She didn’t notice before but he is swaying from side to side, words becoming jumbled as they leave his mouth.

That is when he starts to cry and Y/N realizes just how bad this all is. She lightly shushes him as she leads him to the bed. She pulls at his clothes, leaving him only in undergarments before pulling the quilt up and over his body. She crawls in next to him and allows the man to continue to cry. She never thought she would see her man in this light, his usually tough and strong demeanor crushed under the weight of an impending rebellion.

That is when she realizes, this is exactly what James wants to happen. He wants to watch the captain fold before him and take over when he is in a weakened state. James knew Dean would keep the mutiny a secret from Y/N, he knew Dean seeing the pair together could cause Dean to crack and Y/N was not going to let that happen.

“Love, let’s just lay down..” she rubs circles on Dean’s back, kissing his temple as his shuddered breathing begins to calm down. Despite enjoying being in bed with her, Dean knows deep down that there isn’t time for this. He attempts to rise up from his place in bed, but Y/N stops him from doing so. She wraps her arms around him and kisses at his bare chest.

“Dean, My Love. You can’t fight this in this state. Let yourself rest and we can get with Castiel and Benny once you have come up from the bottle.” He finally relents, relaxing into the bed as Y/N holds him. She decides it is in her best interest to stay awake while Dean sleeps off the rum. She grabs her book from the nightstand and begins to read, rubbing at Dean’s back with her other hand in order to soothe him further.

It only took a few short hours for Dean to sleep off the alcohol, his mind now much more fresh. He has Castiel and Benny and almost three-quarters of the crew stuffed into his room. Y/N is off to the side, smiling at the change in personality she has seen in Dean in just the past several hours. He is confident, strong and oh so handsome as he makes demands and orders his crew around.

After Dean’s outburst this morning, Castiel and Benny were able to figure out what men were planning on turning against the captain, making the task of forming a counter-protest relatively easy.

“Alright men, we dock at midnight. We will get these men off of this boat tonight and if all goes smoothly, all the rum this town has will be on the boat come dawn.”
