There were so many things about being on a spaceship that you hadn’t expected, but the one that you found yourself lingering on was the silence. Not while everyone was awake – no, then the ship was filled with the noise of the crew and the music that never ended. But once they were asleep? You thought you’d hear the engines murmur under the metal floors, but no. Just silence.
“What’re you doing up?”
You started at the sound of Quill’s tired voice behind you, and you turned away from the windows to see him standing in the doorway, rubbing at one eye with the heel of his hand. He’d been on the over-night shift, monitoring the ship’s trajectory through space. Days of stubble marred his jawline, his shirt wrinkled.
“Hey,” you replied. “Who’s steering this thing?”
He smiled, jerking his head back the way he’d come. “Rocket just took over. But you do know the ship has auto-pilot, right?”
You smiled softly, tugging your coat further around yourself. “Still getting used to it.”
“So?” he asked, stepping further into the room. “Why’re you up?”
You shrugged a shoulder, turning back to face the forever expanse of darkness and stars outside. “You know, in like, every movie I’ve ever seen about space, they talk about it being cold. You think that would have prepared me for just how… goddamn freezing it is on this thing.”
Peter chuckled quietly. “You get used to it.”
There was a pause, a moment of that silence that hung between the two of you. Then, you heard his footsteps approach you slowly. You jumped slightly as you felt his hand touch your shoulder, his palm smoothing down over your arm.
“I, uh…” he cleared his throat awkwardly.
“Wh—?”
He wrapped his arms around you hesitantly, his hands tracking down your arms to join them where they were wound around your middle. You raised them in surprise, stumbling slightly as he tugged you gently back against his chest. Your hands settled on top of his arms, his skin wonderfully, surprisingly warm beneath your frigid fingers.
“…Oh.”
“Shit, you weren’t kidding about being cold…” he muttered, his hands moving to enclose yours between them. You sighed, watching his fingers curl around yours. Quill cleared his throat again after a moment, as if only now realising the intimacy of the situation. “Better?”
You nodded, leaning back into his embrace. “…I want to make a comment about you being so warm, but I just know you’re going to turn into a ‘hot’ joke.”
“It’s like you know me.”
You giggled quietly, resting your head back on his shoulder. “It really is amazing out here.”
Peter hesitated as your tone turned pensive, and you felt his hands squeeze yours, so gently you weren’t sure you hadn’t imagined it. “You’re not thinkin’ about leavin’ us already, are you?”
You paused a moment before answering. “Sometimes… I think that I should think that I should, y’know?”
“…You lost me.”
You smiled softly, relaxing further into his embrace. “No. I’m not going anywhere, Quill.”
You felt his chin rest on your hair. “Good. We’re kinda getting used to having you around.”

PART ONE // PART TWO // PART THREE
Sabrina was trying to focus on her charms essay, it was due in less than an hour but she’d fallen asleep in the common room last night and failed to finish which left forced to do it over breakfast, one hand furiously working her quill whilst the other helped her nibble on a piece of perfectly browned toast. The only problem was the noise. After months of being stuck inside the castle the sun had finally started shining which had revved up the excitement amongst the students who had arrived down at breakfast to find glorious rays streaming in through the high windows. To her right the marauders [a nickname of their own choosing] were discussing how they, mainly James and Sirius, could get in a couple of hours of quidditch practice after lessons if the weather conditions held up. To her left the girls [Marlene, Mary, Lily and Dorcas] were going over how Gary Nelson had invited Marlene to Hogsmeade this weekend and how she was debating whether to go considering they’d had an uneasy romantic history.
Sabrina was trying to tune them out the best that she could. It was easier to do when she stationed herself in the middle of both groups and next to Remus who wasn’t really participating in the quidditch talk and instead reading his book whilst trying to shovel cornflakes into his mouth though his focus was so intense it was proving a struggle. Still there was a lot of noise around her which made it hard to focus and even harder for her to be able to distinguish her name from the chatter which is why she didn’t notice Gabriel Prewett was standing on the opposite side of the table waiting to catch her attention which came as Remus nudged her with his elbow.
‘Hey,’ he said, offering her a small smile when she finally looked up.
‘Hey Gabriel,’ Sabrina said, covering her mouth as she swallowed down a piece of toast, ‘everything alright?’
‘Yeah just got those potion notes I borrowed from you,’ he said, placing a couple pieces of parchment on the cluttered table in front of her.
‘Aw thanks,’ she said, ‘hope they helped.’
‘They did, really concise,’ Gabriel said with a smile. Sabrina liked Gabriel. They didn’t hang out a lot given that she mostly spent time with her house mates but they had a few lessons together and they had found themselves often in the library going over the same things and therefore ended up revising together. But other than that they weren’t the chit-chatting type which was why she was surprised when he lingered clearing his throat awkwardly as he said, ‘I was going to give you them back tomorrow but I didn’t know if you’d be headed to the village or not.’
‘I am but there was no rush,’ Sabrina said.
‘In that case maybe we could go to the three broomsticks? Go over that care of magical creatures essay, I’m a bit lost truth be told,’ Gabriel said. Sabrina sighed.
‘I don’t think I’ll have time,’ she replied, ‘Flitwicks moved choir practice so I was only nipping down there for some new quills.’
‘Oh,’ Gabriel said crestfallen, ‘okay, no bother. Another time?’
‘Sure,’ Sabrina said with a smile, grabbing her notes and putting them in her bag. Gabriel watched her duck under the table to reach, her ponytail bobbing just over the table line, and feeling embarrassed he muttered goodbye and headed back to the Hufflepuff table.
Sabrina’s bag was chalked full of papers and textbooks but she found a nook for her notes and tucked them in neatly before reemerging from under the table ready to carry on tackling her essay. However as she settled back in she found the girls' conversation had halted and they were now watching her agog.
‘What?’ Sabrina asked self-consciously.
‘Did I just hear right?’ Mary asked, her dark brown eyes wide.
‘What?’ Sabrina asked again.
‘Did you just turn down a date with Gabriel Prewett?’ Marlene replied from beside her. Sabrina looked at her and scoffed, ‘it wasn’t a date.’
‘That’s a date if ever I’ve heard one,’ Mary protested. Sabrina felt her cheeks warm up, turning her skin to the colour of a grapefruit rather than the fetching coral blush she’d dusted across her cheeks this morning.  Had it been a date? She liked Gabriel. He was nice, sweet even, and very handsome but she didn’t like him, like that. Did he like her like that? Had he been hinting throughout their study sessions and she’d been too oblivious to notice.
‘He just wants help with his care of magical creatures essay,’ she said indignantly.
‘In the pub,’ Sirius reasoned from across the table, making her groan internally. It was one thing for the girls to interrogate her but for the boys to join in was so much worse.
‘Yeah Sirius is right,’ Dorcas continued, ‘no boy suggests a study session in the pub!’
‘Why did you say no?’ James said, adding on to Sabrina’s despair. All eyes were on her now, scrutinising every move she made.
‘It wasn’t a date!’ Sabrina whined.
‘Do you not fancy him?’ Mary asked.
‘He’s the fittest lad in our year,’ Marlene added.
‘That hurts,’ James quipped, earning a grin from his friends.
‘Oh shut up Potter,’ Lily said, rolling her eyes. Sabrina shrank back, knowing that once these two got into it the conversation would soon be dominated by their squabbling and would maybe give her a chance to flee. Her bag was under the desk but if she did make a break for it Remus would probably bring it for her, the only one not joining in with this lunacy.
As predicted James was refusing to look anywhere but at Lily who was staring back at him not willing to back down as he said, ‘are you saying you’d go out with him if he asked Evans?’
‘Maybe,’ Lily challenged, smirking as James’ face fell for a second, ‘besides this isn’t about me this is about Sabs.’
‘Can you just drop it! Gabes is just a friend,’ Sabrina said.
‘Oh Gabe is it now?’ James teased, making her blush deepen.
‘Oh Merlin,’ Sabrina said. The conversation lulled and Sabrina heaved an internal sigh of relief hoping that they’d just let it go but it was unfortunately not to be as across from her Sirius, who’d been watching her closely sniffed and said, ‘nah Bri’s right.’
‘I am?’ she asked, watching him closely, her eyes narrowed.
‘Yeah,’ he shrugged, ‘besides not everyones ready for that stuff.’
‘Yeah,’ Sabrina started before she noticed his choice of words, her face falling into a frown as she looked at him and said, ‘what’s that supposed to mean?’
‘Nothing but well, you’ve turned down every date you’ve been offered this year,’ Sirius shrugged. Sabrina’s mouth fell open, confusion plaguing her as it did everyone else who appeared to be trying to recall when and who had been asking her out. Was Sirius right? Had she been asked out and turned them down? She didn’t even know at this point though she did notice the looks of sheepish pity on her friends faces as his words started to cloud their judgment.
‘I have, I do not,’ was all she could make come out of her mouth as a reply.
‘Yes you do,’ Sirius said firmly.
‘No one’s asked me out,’ Sabrina refuted.
‘Bollocks,’ Sirius snorted, ‘I’ve seen at least three lads try and you’ve rebuked every one of them. That doesn’t even include Gabe.’
‘Ooh who?’ Dorcas asked eagerly, ignoring the way Sirius sneered Gabriel’s nickname.
‘Blake Jones, Frank Longbottom, Yousif Shafique,’ Sirius rhymed them off so quickly Sabrina was scrambling to recall having interactions with these boys let alone being asked out. How did he recall them if she couldn’t? Surely he was winding her up.
‘What’s wrong with them?’ Mary asked.
‘Yeah Frank’s lovely,’ Lily agreed.
'As lovely as me Evans,' James quipped, earning a roll of the eyes from Lily.
‘I never said there was anything wrong with any of them!’ Sabrina said exasperatedly, glaring at Sirius as she added, ‘they haven’t asked me out!’
‘Yes they have,’ Sirius said firmly.
‘Why don’t you want to go out with them?’ Lily probed curiously.
‘You go out with them if you’re so bothered,’ Sabrina snapped, not taking her eyes off of Sirius, scowling at him.
‘No thanks,’ Lily said, scowling herself after being snapped at. When no one spoke Sabrina felt her irritation rev and said, ‘hang on why doesn’t Lily get stick for that!’
‘Wouldn’t want Potter to combust would we,’ Sirius quipped, earning a dig in the ribs from James though he kept his eyes on Sabrina, leaning forward until his elbows were resting on the mahogany so he could ask, ‘so go on, what is it?’
‘None of your business that’s what,’ Sabrina snapped, ‘any of you.’
‘Oooh,’ came several replies, only infuriating her further.
‘Oh piss off,’ she snapped and with that she grabbed her bag from under the table and stood up, swinging it over her shoulder which made Lily have to duck in order not to be clunked in the head. Remus sighed, ‘Sabs sit down.’
‘No,’ Sabrina said, clambering over the back of the bench. She could see Remus was watching her worriedly which made her feel bad for a second, after all had elected not to participate in this haranguing of her character but still she needed to get out of there.
‘Where are you going?’ James asked, watching her just as worriedly. Of course he was the first to see the error of his tormenting. He was always like this when he and Sirius got going. It had been the thing that had initially put her off being friends with them before her friendship with Remus had made her see that they weren’t that bad. But Sirius, oh he was never one to realise when he was going too far. Even when he knew he was being an outright dick if there was a sniff of him being right he’d carry on no matter what the damage.
That was why he was looking at her, challenging him to prove him wrong with evidence that she hadn’t refuted these boys even though she still couldn’t recall it enough to prove him right or wrong. And so she grumbled, ‘somewhere where people don’t try and marry me off every five minutes.’
✵✵✵
Even with the balmy spring day outside the castle wasn’t exactly warm, well not in the areas that weren’t lit by firelight which unfortunately for Sabrina meant the girls second floor bathroom. It wasn’t the optimal study area; the sinks and toilets were grimy from being forgotten most of the time and Moaning Myrtle had talked her ear off about a cruel third year boy who’d called her various unsavoury names for accidentally getting in his way. But it was empty and more importantly out of the way of all her friends. She hadn’t spoken to them throughout any lessons and had scrounged her lunch and dinner from the kitchens rather than join them in the hall. Not to mention there was a slight nook in the wall which if she laid her cloak out made it slightly more comfortable to sit and study.
Her studying however was suspended when she heard the door open. She remained stock still, clutching the care of magical creatures essay she’d decided to get a jump on, wondering if she didn’t make a noise whoever it was would use the loo and get out. That was not the case though as from behind the sinks a flop of messy hair followed by the tentative smile of James Potter. Sabrina sighed and dropped her gaze back to her homework. She shouldn’t have been surprised he managed to find her, not once she remembered that damned map.
‘Hey,’ James said tentatively, moving closer towards her and leaning back on the sinks, ‘you okay?’
‘Fine,’ Sabrina said curtly.
‘He didn’t mean it you know. You know what he’s like when he gets an idea in his head,’ James said. It was true that James Potter was always the first to realise when he and his friends had gone too far. It was also true that he was his friends', more accurately Sirius Black’s, greatest defender. Sabrina sighed, finally looking up at him as she replied, ‘yeah but I don’t know where he gets off acting like I’m,’ she paused, she thought about what Sirius had made her seem like but she didn’t feel like saying the words ‘pathetic’ or ‘stuck up’ because they hurt far too much so instead she navigated away from what she was like and continued, ‘well he has girls fawning over him day in and day out and no one bats an eye! And I don’t care what he says, boys don’t hang around me like that.’
‘They do,’ James said, startling himself at how quickly it rolled off his tongue. Sabrina too was surprised, her face becoming shocked before she managed to compose herself and say, ‘no they don’t!’
‘They really do Sabs,’ James said, somewhat apologetically, like it didn’t feel right to call her out even if he was right, ‘Pads was right. You’ve been asked out at least three times this year and you’ve always said no.’
‘They weren’t. No one’s asked. I don’t know what you’re talking about,’ Sabrina muttered, looking down at her papers. James sighed and took a seat in the nook beside her, trying to ignore how awkward her scrunched up cloak felt nestled under his thigh. He figured now was not the time to talk about his comfort. They were quiet now, James watching her though her blonde locks fell like curtain and blocked most of her face from view.
He didn’t know how she hadn’t figured it out yet. She was one of the prettiest girls in their year. Soft golden locks, complimenting sun kissed skin and bright blue eyes. She was like a doll, pretty and perfect, and completely oblivious to how boys saw her. Mary knew what allure she had. Marlene was pretty but one of the boys. Dorcas hopped from boy to boy with no qualms about what people thought of her. Lily was, well, Lily was all he thought about and to him the prettiest girl ever but he couldn’t deny Sabrina had something, even if she hadn’t realised it yet which he couldn’t believe was true.
After a moment he murmured, ‘you really didn’t notice?’
‘I guess not,’ Sabrina lied. Of course she knew boys liked her. She wasn’t completely oblivious to what she looked like; she just hadn’t wanted to pay them any attention. Not the ones that liked her anyway.
‘Do you just not want to date anyone?’ James asked.
‘Of course I do!’ she protested, looking at him.
‘Then why not?’ he said. His glasses had slid down the end of his nose and his brow was furrowed trying to figure out why she had such an aversion to what seemed to dominate every conversation he and his friends had these days. Sabrina closed her eyes and sighed as she saw it finally dawn on him, ‘you like someone don’t you?’
‘James,’ she sighed.
‘Oh go on, you do don’t you?’ James said, earning a small smile which made everything seem more clear and not just because he’d pushed his glasses into place, ‘who is it?’
‘Let’s just say if I have been asked out I haven’t noticed because I was probably distracted at the time,’ she explained.
Again James’ brow furrowed as he tried to deduct her logic and suddenly it was like the stars aligning. How he hadn’t realised it before he didn’t know. Probably too focused on Lily to notice how her eyes flitted to Sirius any time a boy approached, trying to gauge his reaction, ‘it’s Pads innit?’
‘He kind of eclipses the attention of any boy who looks my way,’ she admitted bashfully.
‘Since when?’ James probed, wondering how long he’d been in the dark.
‘I don’t know,’ she shrugged, ‘start of this year? I guess he just seems different, acts differently somehow.’
‘Why not ask him out?’ James asked, unaccustomed to how someone could keep their feelings in for so long.
‘Like I said he has a million girls hanging off him,’ she grumbled.
‘Yeah and he’s been busy watching who's asking you out.
It had been an odd thing to start liking Sirius. At first she had firmly been in Lily’s camp – that the marauders were nothing but a nuisance. And then she and Remus had been paired together, their names next to each other in the register and well he was lovely. That had made her curious because how could someone as patient and nice be friends with such arrogant oiks? After spending more time with them she realised they weren’t all that bad. Arrogant, sure. Loud and bolshie, absolutely. Slightly snobbish, perhaps. But they were also sweet, funny, kind and caring. They looked after their friends, were fiercely loyal and well a whole lot of fun.
When she had returned after the summer she hadn’t expected her feelings towards them to change and for the other boys they hadn’t. Except she started to get this funny feeling in her stomach when Sirius looked at her. He seemed to be more caring, funnier, brighter. It was only when she’d seen him flirting with Lavinia Porthrop she had realised why it felt like that. She liked him and sure enough everything had soon become him. He dominated her thoughts, when they talked it was him she kept glancing at, and when boys approached her she was watching him, wondering if he’d feel irked like she had. She didn’t think he had but James’ words sparked hope inside her. Hope she had to snuff out because Sirius was well, Sirius. He wasn’t coy. He didn’t shy away from his feelings like she did, if he liked her he would have told her.
‘You’re just saying that,’ she said, feeling her stomach knot.
‘No I’m not,’ James said, nudging her thigh so she’d look up at him. She smiled at him sadly.
‘If he liked me he’d just ask me out,’ she countered, her logic sound and reasoned.
‘I don’t know,’ James replied, ‘he’s different when it comes to people he cares about. The girls know what he’s like and they’re not really bothered but we’ve been friends forever. That means something to him, to all of us, he wouldn’t be willing to throw it away in case he fucked it up. And especially if he wasn’t sure if you were ready or not.’
‘Can you blame me?’ she sighed, ‘it’s not exactly easy to navigate is it?’
‘No, no I guess you’re right,’ James sighed, as she put her head on his shoulder.
‘The dating game is awful,’ Sabrina murmured. James breathed a laugh.
‘Try being in love with a girl who won’t give you the time of day.’
‘That’s the problem!’ Sabrina cried, lifting her head and jumping up from the nook until she was looking at him and looking at him, ‘Lily’s bloody nuts about you and it’s no easier to navigate!’
‘Sure she is,’ James said, rolling his eyes.
‘She is,’ Sabrina said firmly, still slightly irked at her friends and their teasing to restrain herself from spilling something she was sure was true, ‘that’s the problem! She just loves teasing you and making you work for it. Honestly I don’t know how you put up with it.’
‘I really like her,’ James mumbled sadly as the energy left her, forcing her to nestle in back beside him as she grumbled, ‘yeah and I like him. I just wish it wasn’t so bloody complicated.’
‘I get what you mean. Why can't you just say you like someone and see where it goes y’know,’ James agreed.
‘Too busy playing daft games or dancing around the subject,’ Sabrina huffed.
They were quiet for a moment, the pair of them staring at the grubby old sinks opposite as they thought about everything. She hated it being so complicated. She hated that she was too nervous to just tell Sirius she liked him if anything she still wasn’t convinced he’d like her back. Maybe he did and James was right, he was just nervous to ruin their friendship. It was hard to tell because he wasn’t as obvious as James was or Lily for that matter. But to be honest she was grateful for that because it was one thing holding your feelings in and it was another flaunting them at every given moment of the day and not acting on them. She glanced at James, finding him staring glumly at his shoes and was overcome with pity.  Thinking of Sirius she felt pity for herself.
To be honest she just wished it was out in the open. Cards on the table so they could all move on. She knew that wasn’t going to happen though; James was an open book and that was still getting him nowhere.
‘Maybe you ought to play it their way,’ a voice inside her head whispered, ‘play the game.’
‘What if we played them too?’ she asked, causing his hazel gaze to fall on her.
‘What do you mean?’ he asked, pushing his glasses up from the end of his nose.
‘What if we messed with them?’ she asked. The idea made nerves flutter in her stomach.
‘How?’ James asked, narrowing his eyes.
‘Well Lily only keeps you hanging on because she thinks you’re gonna hang on forever,’ she said.
‘Right,’ he said dubiously.
‘And you say Pads likes me,’ she said.
‘He does,’ James said, sitting up a tad straighter, his interest piqued.
‘But he won’t tell me or maybe he would if he saw I was open to dating,’ she said, ‘or that a relationship between friends could work.’
‘What are you on about?’ James said, still lost.
‘Me and you start dating,’ Sabrina said firmly, shocked to see James’ eyes widen in surprise. The marauders were some of the least flappable she’d ever met and yet he was staring at her as if she had three heads, an expression she tried to rectify as she said, ‘think about it. If they want us, as theorised, they’d be bothered by it, right?’
‘Right,’ James said unsurely. Trust Sabrina to come up with a logical, measured test. She should’ve been a Ravenclaw but luncacy and bravery of the idea lended itself to Gryffindor and more accurately, the marauders.
‘Maybe enough to admit how they really feel,’ she said, ‘and if not we give it a couple of weeks and pretend the romance fizzled out, tell them it wasn’t for us but we’re still pals.’
‘You think they’d fall for it?’ James asked sceptically.
‘Worth a shot,’ she shrugged, ‘besides you could always think of it as a prank.’
‘You hate being involved in pranks,’ James countered, raising an eyebrow.
‘Because they’re pointless but this has a purpose, you might even bag Lily,’ she said, a radiant smile dancing across her face. James allowed that to tug at his heart strings. She had a point. He wa2s sure Lily liked him, he could feel it, but what would it take for her to admit that? Maybe this was the way. And Sabrina was right, if they had a couple of weeks with no luck they’d know for sure and could both move on with their lives, not to mention people would probably treat their failed relationship as just one of the casualties of the Hogwarts social scene. James nibbled on the inside of his lip nervously, wondering what to say. Sabrina merely whispered, ‘so, you in?’
‘Go on then,’ James smiled.

Kitty Pryde designs rated by me, a tired Jew.
Tumblr media
Kitty as Sprite: This is like... original flavor Kitty. Just a stressed Jewish teenager doing her best. I want to protect her. That ski mask is doing her no favors, but we were all young and possessed of dubious fashion sense once. 7/10.
Tumblr media
Kitty wielding the Soulsword: This Kitty has fabulous curls, a suit of armor, a cool sword, and an intensely homoerotic relationship with her gal pal. What more could we ask for? 10/10.
Tumblr media
Kitty in God Loves, Man Kills: This Kitty has dark curly hair, olive skin, and a strong nose, all features associated with ethnic Jews. Let's see if Marvel keeps up the good work re: drawing Jewish characters (spoiler alert: they will not). That being said, how is her mask staying on? Who knows? Not me, that's for sure. 8/10.
Tumblr media
Kitty in Uncanny X-Men: Generally considered to be the classic Shadowcat design. And honestly, I can see why. The black-and-yellow costume is a significant upgrade. Her hair is straighter than in her earlier appearances, but there's still some wave to it. 8/10.
Tumblr media
Kitty in X-Men Gold: As time goes on, Kitty's hair has gotten straighter and straighter. Now it's completely flat. I don't like that. Let Kitty keep her Jewish curls, you cowards. I do like the pixie cut, though. 5/10.
Tumblr media
Kitty as Star-Lord: Again with the sad straight hair. Boo! Also, her Star-Lord costume is identical to Peter Quill's. If you're going to make her a cool space pirate, at least give her her own outfit! 2/10.
Tumblr media
Kitty as the Red Queen: Now this is what I'm talking about! Gloriously curly hair, her original Magen David necklace, and a bitchin' pirate coat. Perfect. 1000/10

A lot of these episodes are playing it safe and to me it seems kind of boring. The “What If” concept should be experimental. They should take chances that they can never do with the movies. And since it’s animated they could go bigger.
They should have it episode where Thanos won after endgame. A new universe were the heroes who try to stop them don’t exist. But somehow other marvel characters would take up the mantles of those heroes in this universe. Like Luke Cage becoming the Captain America. Peter parker becomes the punisher after uncle Ben and aunt May are killed by gang violence. Killmonger gets abducted instead of Peter Quill and grows up to become the leader of his own planet that he calls Wakanda.
For that “die hard” inspired Christmas episode. It would’ve been interesting if Justin Hammer hired different mercenary’s to be part of his goons. Like taskmaster, Killmonger and the ghost. That way like the original “Die hard” We see a unlikely hero like happy hogan defeat enemies that are powerful than him. Just like how John McLean was a ordinary New York police officer and not a muscle up action hero like Schwarzenegger.
They can even go deeper to adapt comic book storylines. Since they have the right to the X-Men property. They can adopt the age of apocalypse story. Or any of the countless interesting stories from the comics. And based on the fact that they introduced a brand new character. They can incorporate many other marvel characters from the comics that has never been introduced in the movies yet.
Also don’t see you needs to tone down with the quippy dialogue for every project. The thing that the comic book share universe used to do was that every book had their own tone. daredevil was serious. The punisher was dark and spider-Man had light moments, until A life lesson Peter had to learn came up. There were different types of X-Men books that varied in how they were written. Basically there was some thing for everyone because everything was different but still were connected.
The problem with the MCU, because of the first avengers movie is that everyone has to be funny. And that ruins the audience’s suspension of disbelief. A lot of these writers who do this think they’re being smart and Meta, but really it’s stupid and lazy story dialogue writing.
Also I’m not a fan of the cel shaded animation. To me it feels too uniform. It would be interesting for a anthology show called “What If” to have different animation styles for each episode.
For example a anime style episode that features Shang Chi. Or a CGI animated episode with Iron Man. Or maybe go more experimental with a claymation Christmas episode.
This can also help give work to different animation companies, Who are desperate for work.
Like I said the “What If” concept should be experimental an interesting. But these guys are playing it safe by doing bland within the box story writing.

Michael in the Mainstream: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Tumblr media
As most people know by now, I am a huge fan of superhero movies and have been since I was a kid. I grew up with Batman, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and even Ghost Rider, and I loved the transition into the MCU and the huge leap in care and respect towards the source material.
Still, I don’t think it was really until 2014 that I really came to love the genre like I do now. I sat down in a theater for a little movie called Guardians of the Galaxy, not knowing what to expect since this was a pretty obscure superhero team comprised of characters I’d never heard of, directed by a guy whose work I wasn’t familiar with at the time (aside from Scooby-Doo, of course). The opening scene, in which Peter “Star-Lord” Quill watches his mother die before being abducted by aliens had me intrigued. But when the next scene began and Chris Pratt began dancing through the ruins of an alien world to the sound of Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love,” I knew I was watching something special, something extraordinary. I left the theater that day with a new all-time favorite film.
Fast forward nine years. The superhero movie landscape has changed a lot in that time, but there are only two things really relevant to the topic at hand. The first is that people have grown incredibly tired of Marvel’s brand of humor and witty banter, something that really defined the first two Guardians movies. It doesn’t help that so many superhero films, even outside of Marvel, tried to crib their style without understanding why people liked it there (looking at you, Suicide Squad). People don’t mind some humor to lighten things up, but they also want dramatic moments and genuine emotion to let them connect to the characters.
The second is that the MCU wrapped up its decade-long overarching plot and gave a few characters the satisfying conclusions they deserved while leaving some threads dangling for the future. It was a truly massive event that felt like the end of an era… and it was immediately followed by Disney churning out dozens of movies and shows in only a couple of years, inundating the market and pushing out products that feel incredibly half-baked and underwritten. Even the ones I’d call great like Wakanda Forever or No Way Home suffer from the sort of wonkiness that the home runs of Phase 3 didn’t have, while the ones I didn’t like exacerbated all the problems people have with Marvel. Now I don’t believe in “superhero fatigue,” because people still want superheroes. What they don’t want is bad movies, and too many of the films lately are falling short of audience expectations.
And that brings us to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Despite James Gunn having hit it out of the park with Marvel twice before and hopping over to DC to redeem their cinematic universe with two of their best entries, the aforementioned points weighed heavily on everyone’s minds. That’s not even getting into the film’s tumultuous development, with Gunn being fired and then rehired, which only further had people worried about the gang of intergalactic goofballs. Even from a man so known for quality superhero cinema that DC put him in charge of their own cinematic universe, the odds seemed stacked against this film delivering.
But in spite of all that, even with all these things against the film, Gunn managed to pull off one of the rarest feats imaginable: He went three for three and delivered an amazing finale to a perfect trilogy.
Now, when I say “perfect” I don’t mean the films are without flaw, because a movie without flaw does not exist. What I mean is that the trilogy consistently builds on core themes while maintaining its identity throughout, as well as maintaining a high level of quality throughout. Think of the original three Star Wars films or The Lord of the Rings to see what I mean. The key is to start strong, keep building through the middle, and then conclude on a strong note that wraps everything up nicely. In short: Be a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Vol. 3 manages to pull off being that satisfying endpoint that no other superhero third movie has been able to so far.
The big way the film does that is by recontextualizing the series in a big way: It establishes that, rather than Peter Quill, the trilogy’s true protagonist has been Rocket. It makes sense when you look back on the movies and see how he has had the most development (which is even more pronounced when you remember he and Nebula were the only Guardians to survive the Snap), and this film is no exception other than taking this to the logical conclusion by making him the focus character and the one who drives the plot. It’s frankly amazing how a character who spends two acts in a coma dreaming of his heartbreaking backstory still manages to feel relevant even when he’s not actively participating in the plot, and when he is Bradley Cooper makes a case for being one of the single greatest actors in the MCU.
Tumblr media
That’s not to say the other characters are bad, though! Every single one of the Guardians’ actors brings their A-game here, especially the ones for whom this is definitively their last rodeo (Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana). Bautista is finally given his due, getting to play Drax as more than just dumb muscle, while Saldana gets to play a more brutal and vicious Gamora than we’ve seen before. Outside of them, the very best performance is probably from Karen Gillan as Nebula who, while still as crabby as ever, genuinely feels like a part of the family for the first time and gets to play the straight man to a lot of antics.
I think it’s also worth pointing out how good Chris Pratt is here, especially after Quill was something of a joke in the Avengers films. Here, Quill is back to his proper characterization and gets a great character arc that plays to Pratt’s strengths, unlike many of his modern roles. I know there’s been a bit of a Pratt fatigue lately, but he’s in his element under Gunn and delivers one of his strongest performances yet. And with all that said, no matter how minor (Cosmo) or out of focus (Groot) a Guardian is compared to the core cast, they all get their time to shine in the third act with a finale that makes use of all their skills in unique and creative ways. No one really feels underutilized here, even if they don’t get as much spotlight as others.
I think one of the more divisive new additions is going to be Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock, though I think most of that will hinge on how familiar you are with his established character in the comics. As I’m not super familiar with Warlock, but do love Poulter even in films I hate like Midsommar, I thoroughly enjoyed him here. He feels like Age of Ultron Vision done right, a powerful being only recently born but forced into dramatic conflict. He is a bit underplayed unfortunately, but you know we’ll be seeing more of him soon enough, and at the very least he gets a handful of really funny moments and some cool scenes to build him up. They could have done more with him, but I certainly loved him.
Tumblr media
This movie certainly ends up being one of the darkest films in the entire MCU, and nearly all that darkness is the result of the film’s villain, the High Evolutionary, who is quite possibly the most evil villains in comic book movie history, if not necessarily the very best (though I certainly think he’s up there). His entire character revolves around his insane god complex, and to satisfy it he abuses animals, cruelly experiments on living beings, and commits genocide with an unnerving casualness. On top of that, he’s just incredibly petty, never missing an opportunity to either figuratively or literally kick the dog. Chukwudi Iwuji is clearly relishing every moment he has playing a guy who can switch from classy visionary villain to frothing lunatic at the drop of a hat. If nothing else, it’s just so refreshing to see a villain without a tragic backstory or sympathetic motivations and who is just an asshole, plain and simple. This might not work for everyone because it does leave him as a rather simple character, but sometimes it’s just nice to see a villain who’s just a massive cunt that you want to watch die with every fiber of your being. He’s pretty easily the best villain of the entire trilogy, and considering how good Ego was and how fantastic Kurt Russell is as an actor, that’s really saying something.
Tumblr media
You will not be surprised to hear that the soundtrack is good, because Gunn has not missed once when it comes to these soundtracks. It’s not quite as good as Vol. 2’s soundtrack—how could it be when there’s no Fleetwood Mac?—but the variety of decades the Zune brings beyond the 70s and 80s tunes of the first couple of movies really help set the scenes. It’s never bad to hear Faith No More’s “We Care a Lot,” and the movie has the best use of the Beastie Boys in a movie starring Chris Pratt that you’ll see this year.
What is surprising, though, is that the CGI isn’t dogshit. We’re not talking Avatar levels of quality, but it’s still a damn pretty movie, and this is supported by some fantastic practical effects and costumes. The only real complaints I’ve got are that the humor doesn’t always land and there are some rather weird editing choices, but aside from that you can tell everyone working on this was given the time to make sure this was the sendoff these heroes deserve.
And I think that’s the movie’s ultimate strength: It’s a true sendoff, and not just setup for the future. The characters conclude their arcs, and unlike with Endgame all of the endings our heroes get feel fitting, satisfying, and well-earned. We may see some of these characters again someday, but for certain members of the Guardians you can tell they’ve finally ended up where they need to be. And this is a good thing! All stories need an ending, and as far as endings go this is one of the best.
At the very end of the film, the audience gets to experience something the other characters have throughout these films: We get to clearly and without translation understand what Groot is saying, symbolizing how we as an audience have become as close to him as his friends have. In essence, we are all Guardians of the Galaxy now. Our journey, too, has come to its logical conclusion; we’ve seen these characters we’ve followed for so long complete their arcs and end up where they need to be. Isn’t it nice to reach a conclusion, however bittersweet it is?
This is one of the best superhero movies out there, and easily one of the top 5 MCU films. If you like superhero movies and are tired of the same old slop being shoveled out, you need to go see this movie, because it shows a bright future where creative control goes to the filmmakers so they can make films with heart and soul. The future of DC is definitely in good hands, that’s for sure. And if this is ultimately where you get off the superhero rollercoaster, I can’t blame you when this is the best stopping point we’re likely to get. For me, my days of obsessively making sure I see every Marvel project are over; I’ll stick to checking out what interests me, ignoring what doesn’t, and being at peace knowing my favorite heroes got a satisfying conclusion.

rom-com moment
peter quill x f!reader prompt: rain theme: smut/fluff (tags beneath the cut)
Tumblr media
“You really know how to romance a girl, Quill.”
He snickered against your skin, his breath tickling against the side of your throat, a heated contrast to the icy water soaking your clothes and your hair. His hands clutched hungrily at your sides, trapping you against the wall behind you. He was equally soaked, rain dripping into his eyes as he pulled back to meet your gaze with a familiar cocksure smile.
“I thought this was every girl’s fantasy,” he said, his hands coming up to unzip your jacket. You shivered as the rain and his freezing hands tainted your dress, your own fingers curling in the lapels of his coat. You pulled him closer; his body heat the only combat for the rain. “A big ol’ declaration of love in the rain.”
“This isn’t a declaration, Peter,” you pointed out snidely, fumbling with his belt despite your tone. His fingers curled in your dress, dragging it up over your thighs. The fabric clung to your skin. “This is you trying to get your dick wet.”
He laughed, grasping your thighs and lifting you. You wrapped your legs around his waist, your hands taking hold of his shoulders.
“And if this is supposed to be your way of telling me you love me for the first time, I’m going to kick your ass.”
“Gotcha,” he replied, his amusement giving way to the heady growl of desire as you wrapped your hand around his cock. He groaned as you pressed the head of his erection into your cunt. “I’ll save it for later.”
Peter thrust into you in one hard stroke, and you moaned, swallowing down rain before pulling him into a kiss. Even as the meaning of his words dawned on you, your thoughts devolved into the simple, hungry notes of pleasure, and you broke away from his mouth to bring his face back down to your throat.
Quill’s teeth dug into the sensitive skin over your pulse point and your head fell back against the wall. Rain hit your face, water running down your cheeks and you blinked against it as your eyes rolled back.
He fucked you in rough, hurried thrusts, his hands digging into the flesh of your ass possessively. A shiver wracked through you, and you could feel his body trembling with the cold of the rain despite the heat of his body against yours.
When you came, the sound of your moan was drowned out by thunder, and you could have sworn you heard Peter whisper three words against your skin.

Clara was about to commit a murder.
Never before had she thought about ending someone else’s life, but the more time ticked by, the more appealing this idea became.
She checked the time once more, and took her final decision: Lily was a dead woman.
Her and Liam had been together for a mere week, and Clara already wanted to commit manslaughter. But maybe, instead of killing her friend she could kill the boyfriend instead. Yes, that sounded much better to cut his tanned throat… how could she get away with it though?
She heaved a sigh, and rested her forehead on the table. The library was quiet, despite the early hour of the afternoon. There were quite many students around her, studying hard, even if the year was merely beginning. Any other day, Clara would have found the atmosphere soothing, surrounded by books and quiet whispers. But she was too annoyed for that.
In over five years of friendship, Clara had never seen Lily being late. Never. But all of a sudden, she had a boyfriend, and then Clara was forgotten. She closed her eyes, letting out another annoyed sigh.
How typical…
"Usually, libraries are for reading or studying, not napping. You know that, don't you?"
Clara jumped at the sound of a voice right by her table. She looked up to discover Sirius, a smile full of mischief painted on his handsome features.
"I wasn't sleeping, I was waiting," she answered, smiling back, although she couldn’t hide her irritation.
"Waiting? For what?"
"For whom. Lily."
Sirius nodded, clearly amused by now.
"Ah, I see! Now that she’s in a happy relationship with Super-Tan, she leaves you behind, right?"
Clara struggled to laugh discreetly.
"I'm definitely stealing this nickname from you. It fits Liam quite well.”
"Feel free to use it. This guy’s most definitely using some kind of spell to get that tan all year-round.”
“I’m suspecting he’s using some Muggle beauty products, actually.”
“Really? Even better!”
They both laughed, although they remained quiet. In the shy whispers that shook the library, even a breathy laughter was too loud.
“Why did the two of you had to meet here?” Sirius asked her, still standing by her table, pushing a strand of his long hair behind his ear.
"Work on the Transfiguration essay,” she answered with a wince.
"Maybe I can help you with that," Sirius offered with a happy smile, and Clara was quite surprised that he would make her such an offer. He even looked excited about it, that was definitely unexpected…
"Don't worry about me, she'll come, eventually," the girl reassured him. “I don’t want to bother you.”
Sirius merely shrugged.
"It's okay. I'm quite good at Transfiguration. And it wouldn’t bother me at all."
Before she could answer, he was taking the sit opposite her, opening his bag and taking out a quill, a piece of parchment and his Transfiguration textbook.
"It's really nice of you," she thanked him.
He shrugged again, starting to write.
"I'll have to do it sooner or later anyway," he answered nonchalantly.
"Where are the boys?" she asked him as she opened her own book and searched for the right chapter. “Aren’t you expected somewhere?”
"Peter is snoring in the dorms. James is with Remus."
"Is Remus okay?"
He took a careful glance at her before focusing on his book again. But she seemed genuinely worried now. Still, he was cautious with his choice of words when he spoke again.
"Sure. Why wouldn't he be?"
She rolled her eyes.
"Merlin! We all already know, Black!"
He stared intensely at her, and she felt like his grey eyes could pierce right through her.
"What do you think you know exactly?"
"I can read a moon chart. We figured it out almost two years ago."
He propped up an eyebrow, but in a flash his expression had changed and he looked preoccupied, his brow furrowed.
"And you didn't tell anyone?"
"Of course not. I'm not stupid."
"Who else knows?"
"Only the five of us."
"Merlin! And you're okay with it?"
Clara narrowed her eyes at him, looking almost offended.
"Remus is probably the sweetest guy in this school, Black. Of course, I don't care. None of us cares. As long as he doesn't try to devour us in our sleep, all is fine."
Sirius looked very surprised, but not that worried anymore.
"So, is he okay? The full moon was yesterday, wasn't it?" Clara asked again.
Sirius nodded, heaving a sigh, and he seemed much more worried now, tired as well, as if he had stopped hiding a burden he had to carry.
"It was a rough one, that's why he missed class this morning."
"Poor Remus. Of all people, why did it have to be him? He's so kind."
She heavily sighed, before shaking herself. Sirius kept staring at her, thinking hard, studying her and weighing the risks that her knowing his friend’s secret involved. But then again, if she had known for two years and said nothing, he reckoned that she wasn’t that dangerous, after all.
There was a ray of sunshine coming in from the nearby window falling right onto their table. It shone upon Sirius’s features, photons caught in his dark hair. He had dark bags under his eyes though, a five-hour shadow on his jaw and his eyes were reddened by his lack of sleep. Clara seemed to finally notice how tired he looked.
"You don't seem to have slept a lot yourself," she pointed out.
He smiled mischievously again.
"You don't want to hear about that, Clearwater."
She couldn't refrain a disgusted look, before hiding her reaction behind her book, and Sirius narrowed his eyes.
"What did I say?" he asked her.
"Nothing," she lied.
"Come on. What's wrong?"
"Nothing!"
Sirius stayed silent for a while, still staring at her, looking for a reason behind her strange behaviour. He rolled his eyes when he guessed.
"I didn't spend my night shagging anyone if that’s what you've understood."
She looked at him over her book.
"Really?"
"Really."
"It's not like I care, really," she justified herself, clearly embarrassed, her cheeks on fire, "it's just that I find the idea of you shagging someone in the Castle, where I could actually go, really disgusting. One thing is for sure, I could never enter a classroom again if I knew you were spending your nights there with some girl or boy..."
Sirius laughed hard, drawing scowls towards them from several tables. She shushed him, giggling herself.
"Well, you can go to McGonagall's class tomorrow safely," he teased.
"If I finish this essay that is."
"Of course," he chuckled again.
"So, how do you do this spell?"
She showed him a complicated incantation used to turn a howl into a galleon. The sun was hitting the old page, the stained glass on the upper part of the window colouring the parchment in blue and pink.
"This one is not the best to make this transfiguration actually," Sirius answered with a slight frown as he read through the page.
He took her book and looked for the right page, focused and thus paying no attention to his surroundings. Meanwhile, Clara was patiently waiting, but got distracted by the sound of giggles coming from the other side of the shelves set behind her.
"So, are you going to come see the try-outs?" asked one of the girls.
"Of course! The Gryffindor boys are so gorgeous!"
Clara rolled her eyes, now fully focused on the conversation while Sirius struggled with the pages.
"Their captain is so hot!" said another.
"Well, I'll go for Black personally, he's perfect..."
Clara rolled her eyes again, annoyed, and Sirius chose this very moment to look up at her, having finally managed to find the right spell. He frowned hard. She seemed… annoyed…
"Sorry if I'm so boring," he said, quite hurt.
"Sorry, what?" Clara asked, focusing on him again.
"I said: sorry if I'm so boring. You can tell me if you don't want me to stay."
"What?! That's..."
She finally understood.
"Oh, no! I'm sorry. You're not annoying at all. It's the group of girls behind us. They're talking about the Quidditch try-outs. Listen."
They both focused on the girls' conversation.
"Dearborn is handsome too."
"You can't compare him to Black, I mean... This man, is so bloody gorgeous!"
Sirius raised an eyebrow, trying not to laugh and biting on his lower lip in the process.
"You're right, I'll go for Black, one hundred percent."
"Yeah, but you know how he is with girls..."
"Who cares, really! If I could be thrown in a cupboard with him, sign me up, at any cost."
"She's right, you're mad!"
"I think I still prefer Dearborn."
"Bullshit," Sirius suddenly let out.
He and Clara looked at each other, before bursting into laughter, choking as they struggled to remain quiet.
"Do you think they know you're here?" Clara asked him as she was finally able to breathe again.
He shook his head.
"I don't think so. Are they annoying you?"
"Well, sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not one of your groupies. And I think they're kind of idiots, really."
He grinned at her, his eyes full of mischief.
"All right then, give me a sec!"
Before she could say anything, Sirius had stood up and was heading towards the girls behind Clara. Her eyes wide, the Gryffindor turned on her chair and managed to glimpse at two of the girls, visible between the rows of books. One was from Ravenclaw, the other from Gryffindor, they seemed to be in their fifth year. Sirius approached their table and the girls went completely still as they recognised him. Wearing his most seductive smile, the boy leaned casually against the shelf.
"Hey, girls! Sorry to interrupt, but I'm trying to study right on the other side of this shelf with a friend, and you're talking too loudly for her, she can't focus. Could you lower the volume a bit, please?"
His voice was low and sweet, and the girls literally melted upon their chairs.
"Of course, we're sorry," answered the Gryffindor, barely breathing, her eyes wide.
"No problem, bye!"
"Bye!"
Clara was biting her fist hard to stop herself from laughing too loudly. The second Sirius sat down and caught her amused eyes, he was gone for. They were laughing so much for a while that they couldn't look at each other, or they would burst into laughter again. It lasted long minutes, and several students looked at them with disapproving smiles as they passed by their table.
"You're crazy!" Clara admonished him, wiping the tears from her face.
"That was so funny!" he replied, drying his cheeks with his sleeves too. "Have you seen their faces?!"
They were gone laughing again for a while, holding their painful sides, choking as they tried to be as silent as possible.
Clara’s stomach was so painful… she reckoned she hadn’t laughed that much in months…
"The Transfiguration essay," she finally managed to articulate, clearing her throat, but averting her eyes far away from Sirius, knowing that the mere sight of him would make her explode again.
"Right."
Sirius cleared his throat too, and finally helped her with the spell.
They worked quite quickly together, and less than an hour later, they had both finished their essay. It was still sunny outside when they closed their books and put away their homework, although the sky was turning from bright blue to pale gold.
"Do you have anything else to work on?" Sirius asked her.
"I'm done for tonight,” she answered with a shake of her head. “Thank you for your help! You really are quite good at Transfiguration."
Sirius smirked, and there was something mischievous in his eyes too when he held her stare, but she didn’t get what it meant, and he didn’t say a word.
"You're welcome. It was quite fun!"
They walked out of the library together, joking and laughing and smiling. And it felt nice, exciting.
The more time he spent with her, the more Sirius enjoyed Clara’s company.
"Where are you going now?" she asked once they were in the corridor, leaving whispering behind and speaking with her usual tone again. “To get yourself in trouble, I bet!”
"No, not today,” he chuckled. “I’ll go check on Remus, he must be back in the dorm by now. You?"
"I'll take a walk, I think. It’s not that late, and the weather is nice. Better enjoy it while it lasts. Autumn in Scotland is always a mess!"
Sirius seemed to think for a moment, eyes set onto hers. He tilted his head to the side a little, weighing options, before he would offer her a bright smile.
"Would you mind if I came with you? You’re right, it’s nice outside, I’d love to take a walk too."
She grinned at him.
"No, of course not! Come on! I know just the place!"
They headed towards the grounds, remaining silent until they reached the shores of the lake. Indeed, the sun was still warm enough to make their walk pleasant, and only a shy breeze disturbed the dark waters before them. In the distance, Hagrid’s hut was puffing a white smoke by its chimney. It was slow, leisurely, soothing… With no more sounds than the regular movement of water and wind passing through tall branches.
They sat against a tall oak and enjoyed the sight of the sinking sun setting the sky on fire and lighting up the water with golden shades. Clara took out a notebook and some pencils from her bag, and she started to draw, humming softly to herself.
"I didn't know you liked drawing," Sirius finally said, a small smile playing on his lips that was, perhaps, a little too fond.
"I love drawing, I spend much of my free time surrounded with pencils and paper,” she answered with a chuckle. “Does that bother you if I…”
“No, no! On the contrary, that’s nice! I have no talent whatsoever for it.”
“What about you, then? Any hobby? Besides preparing pranks, I mean…”
He smiled mischievously, wiggling his eyebrows to make her laugh, and he easily succeeded. He was more serious when he answered her question, though.
"Quidditch."
She shook her head, amused.
"I should have known."
"You don't like Quidditch yourself?"
"I do like Quidditch actually. I think I'll come to the try-outs this year."
Sirius propped up an eyebrow.
"Really? Which position?"
"Beater."
Sirius choked, trying to hold back a laugh.
"I can fly, you know?" she replied, failing to hide the hurt expression that came to her face.
"I don’t doubt that but… Are you sure you've got enough strength to be a Beater? You should rather try for Chaser. I bet you're fast."
But Clara shook her head.
"No, I want to play Beater."
"Sure?"
"Yep."
"Well then, we'll see how you do on Saturday, I guess."
"Get ready to be surprised."
"Something tells me that I will be!"
They smiled at each other, and Clara focused on her drawing again. Silence settled around them, but it was comfortable and warm, and none of them minded. They merely enjoyed each other’s company while the sun made the sky redden.
After a while, Clara finally spoke again, her voice quite shy.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"I... I know it's probably none of my business, but... Why was your brother so cold with you the other day?"
Sirius shifted, clearly uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry, it's none of my business," she added quickly as she was noticing his reaction. "Never mind."
He looked at her for a while, trying to decide if he should answer or not. A part of him was choosing the safest option, as always, and ordering him to keep his mouth shut. But another seemed willing to talk, and it was strange, unfamiliar. They didn’t know each other that much, even if they got along. And yet, there was this feeling in his chest, this aura about her… And Sirius wanted to tell her. For once, he did want to open his mouth, and let it all out.
Would she give him that look of pity he often received when he opened up, though? He would hate that. He would hate it if she gave him this look…
But then again, she was blushing now, clearly looking for something to say that would make him feel more comfortable again, and that was incredibly nice of her. He wasn’t used to that. To people being delicate with him and his feelings. It was nice though, it made him answer without really being willing to do so.
"It's quite complicated, with my family."
"Why?" she asked, looking up at him again.
"Many reasons."
She took just a quick glimpse at his expression, at the sudden clenching of his jaw, and the sadness that dulled the grey in his eyes. She nodded, offering him a kind smile.
"You don't have to answer, if you don't want to talk about it,” she reassured him. “I didn't know it was complicated for you to talk about your family. I shouldn't have asked in the first place. It’s none of my business."
He let out a breathy laugh, shaking his head, resting his forearms on his knees and holding his left wrist with his right hand. He lost his gaze on the lake, alit with burning lights.
Damn, that was exactly the right thing to say. And now, he wanted to say it all out loud…
He took a deep breath before diving though. The words were as heavy as lead on his tongue, but it felt good to let them out all the same. He hadn’t talked about all this to anyone but the boys.
"The thing is, I'm not part of the family anymore."
"What do you mean?" Clara asked with a frown, putting down her paper and pencils on the grass, right next to her bag, giving Sirius her full attention.
"I ran away last summer."
She stared at him, her eyes wide.
"You ran away? But... Why? Where did you go?"
"I went to the Potters'. They've always treated me like a son. They took me in without a hesitation, gave me a home..."
"Why did you run away?"
His throat tightened; he chose his words carefully. Because he didn’t want her to run away. Because it was painful, still, to talk about all this.
"I don't share my family's point of view upon many subjects and… one night I had enough. So, I took my things, and walked out."
"You ran away because you disagreed with your family? It must have been about quite important subjects..."
He shifted again. The conversation was heading in a direction he clearly didn't like, but it was too late to go back now. She patiently waited for him to speak again, and he was thankfully for it.
"They're all in the pure-blood mania, you know?” he answered in a breathy tone, looking at her once more. “And I'm not. I don't care that people are muggleborns or half-bloods, or muggles even. They're still people, end of story. I didn't fit in the familial mantra, evidently."
"I see," she answered.
He looked at the lake once more, but Clara guessed that he wasn't seeing it anymore. It was too hard to look into her green eyes though. They were too warm, too welcoming, too reassuring… he wasn’t used to that. It was still a struggle to him, to accept to be looked upon with kindness.
He cleared his throat before speaking once more. And maybe his confession went too far, but he didn’t really mind. That ought to mean something, right?
"I don't want the life they have designed for me," he continued, his gaze still lost upon the burning lake. "I don't want to get married with a cousin to have a pure-blood marriage. I don't want to marry someone because a bunch of pure-blood maniacs have decided that I should, even if I will never love her. I don't believe in the pure-blood supremacy in any way, and I have never accepted to keep my mouth shut about it in front of them all. I've never been the perfect soldier, quite the contrary actually. I'm a stranger to them, really… and my brother is the perfect son next to me. He entered Slytherin like everyone has done in my family since the school opened, and I was sorted into Gryffindor. He bends to all their manners and masks, and I always blow up sooner or later. He has accepted his arranged marriage, and shares the family idea that pure-bloods are worth more than other people; and I rejected the girl they had chosen for me and I'm friends with muggleborns, half-bloods and pure-bloods alike. We're quite different my brother and I, and I think he took the fact that I ran away personally, as if I was leaving him, and not my parents. And then again… I’ve spent many years protecting him from our parents. Now that I’m gone, it must be harder for him. So, you can see why it is quite tensed between us."
He smiled sadly, a pain badly hidden on his features. Meanwhile, Clara was speechless. What could she answer? She had always thought he was a prat and an idiot. She knew he was a pure-blood, and though she had never cared about it, she had always thought he must have been something of a spoiled child, really, with too much money and gifts and worship from his parents to be a good person in the end. But she had been wrong all along. He had evidently suffered a lot, and she could guess, even if he didn’t say it out loud, that he hadn’t been truly loved in his family. She didn’t know to which extent though. She couldn’t have imagined what he had gone through. Still, tears formed on the corners of her eyes.
"I didn't know..."
Her words stayed stuck in her throat. He shook himself, finally setting his eyes away from the burning water, to focus on her again.
"Oh, never mind that, I'm fine,” he offered her a reassuring smile. “Let's change the subject, okay? How is your drawing going on?"
She chuckled, shaking her head, and picked up her notebook once more. She had hardly drawn anything.
"I'm not very productive, actually."
He let out a laugh, that sounded much like a bark, while she picked up a pencil again and drew a colourful line across the white paper.
"I'm talking too much clearly, you can't focus!"
"It's okay, I like talking with you."
He kept on looking at her as she was drawing again.
"You're not as stupid and horrible as I thought you were," she added, narrowing her eyes as she was focusing on her page. "Or maybe you grew up a bit, which helped."
He laughed again.
"I may have grown up, that's true. If it means anything to you, you're not as boring and uptight as I thought you were."
She laughed too.
"Thanks, that's quite nice. But I've always been kind of the reckless one of the girls, you don't have the excuse of any changes on my part for not having noticed it before."
"But I was stupid and horrible before, remember?"
"True!"
She laughed again, and he found her laugh quite beautiful indeed... infectious… it was enough to make him smile.
"I'd better go check on Remus,” he finally added with a sigh. “I was supposed to replace James more than an hour ago, he's going to kill me."
He got up, and threw his bag upon his shoulder.
"I'd love to see this drawing of yours when you're finished, if you don't mind," Sirius added before he would leave.
She looked up at him and grinned.
"Sure, I'll show you."
"Great. See you later, Clearwater."
He started to walk away, but she called him back.
"What if we ate together tonight, Sirius?”
He smiled at the use of his first name. He liked it, the way she said it, it sounded softer when she was the one speaking it out loud.
He turned back towards her, shooting her a wink and a crooked smile, while still walking backwards towards the Castle.
“Sure, that would be nice! See you tonight, Clara!”
He turned towards the Castle again, grinning, heading for the dormitory where James was undoubtedly waiting for him with a death sentence.
Meanwhile, Clara was smiling as she kept on drawing. She quite enjoyed the way he said her name…
Tumblr media
"Padfoot, you were supposed to come back more than an hour ago! A bloody, fucking hour ago!"
And here was the expected death sentence. Merlin...
Sirius rolled his eyes, throwing his bag by his bed.
"Where were you?" asked Peter, looking up from the magazine he was reading.
"With Clara," Sirius answered casually. "We were working on the Transfiguration essay.”
Sirius sat on his bed and took off his shoes, ignoring Remus’s raised eyebrow and James’s glare. He untied his tie too and threw it in his trunk.
“You were studying? With Clara? Nothing in this makes any sense…” Remus mumbled, letting his head fall back onto his pillow, exhausted.
“Very funny,” Sirius answered wryly. “Next time you need help in Charms, go fuck yourself.”
“How come you were with Clara?” Peter asked, disregarding his magazine completely now.
“I bumped into her while she was waiting for Lily in the Library. But Lily didn’t show, so I helped her instead. And I also completed my own essay!”
“I’ve been waiting for you for an hour,” James replied through gritted teeth, throwing his pillow at his friend, still mad. “Next time, I’ll turn you into a slug and leave you outside to be eaten by some bird…”
“Thanks, Prongs. I love you too.”
Sirius let himself fall back on his bed before turning towards Remus again.
"By the way, I now have some information that will interest you, Moony. So, you'd better be nice to me if you want me to tell you what I've just learned."
Remus was lying on his bed, his blanket up to his chin, still shaking with fever. He sighed and rubbed his eyes, annoyed.
"Padfoot, I'm really not in the mood for any kind of joke or gossips right now. I'm still terribly sick from last night, in case you hadn't noticed."
But Sirius merely smiled.
"Did you know that they know?"
Remus slowly averted his eyes on Sirius’s, and they grew round as he read in his friend’s grey stare that he had perfectly understood what he meant… He suddenly was even paler than before.
"What do you mean?" the boy asked slowly, needing confirmation anyway.
Meanwhile, James and Peter exchanged a worried glance, standing up from their own beds to get closer to their friends. James leaned against Sirius’s bedframe while Peter took a seat on the edge of Remus’s mattress.
"The girls know you're a werewolf, Clara asked me how you were feeling,” Sirius answered matter-of-factly. “They guessed over two years ago, apparently."
"Shit!"
Remus tightly closed his eyes, while the two other Marauders seemed more than worried now.
"But they’ve never talked about it!" said James, his brow furrowed.
"Nope, clearly they don't care,” Sirius reassured them, lifting his arms to rest his hands behind his head, before he would turn to Remus again. “When I asked Clara what they thought about it, she answered that you, my friend, were the sweetest guy in this school, and that as long as you were not attacking them at night, they didn't give a damn."
The boys looked at each other, before bursting into laughter, although not all traces of worry were gone from their features just yet.
"Merlin! I had no idea they knew," said Remus, shaking his head in disbelief.
"Well, they do."
The four friends kept on chatting for a while, until it was time for dinner, as Peter’s loud stomach reminded the group.
Sirius sighed, exhausted, and put on his shoes again. James helped Remus to get out of bed.
"Are you sure you don't want us to get you something?" asked Peter.
"No, I'm fine," answered Remus, standing straighter despite his fatigue and painful muscles. "And I reckon I should have a conversation with the girls."
They headed together for the Great Hall, although they took their time to walk there, unwilling to let Remus hurry in his tired state. Many students were already eating, but they did find some empty spots around the Gryffindor table next to Lily, Marlene, Dorcas and Alice. The Hall was busy and loud, the magical sky above their hands matching the starry night outside.
The girls were discussing Lily's date with Liam that had occurred earlier that evening when the Marauders joined them.
"He's such a sweetheart," sighed Marlene dreamily.
"He is," confirmed Lily.
James wisely stopped listening, but the conversation was over anyway, and so he didn't have to suffer more descriptions of Lily's perfect date with Super-Tan.
"Where is Clara?" asked Remus.
He barely touched any of his food, and the mere sight of meat was making him feel nauseous, but he needed to make sure the girls would not say anything to anyone about his secret.
"No idea," answered Alice with a shrug, taking a bite of her potato.
"She must still be at the Lake," answered Sirius, his mouth full with roasted chicken.
Lily furrowed her brow.
"How would you know?"
"I saw her in the library, where she was waiting for you to make her Transfiguration essay."
Lily's eyes grew wide.
"It was tonight?"
"I'm afraid it was," Sirius nodded with an amused smile.
"Oh, no! I totally forgot, I was sure it was tomorrow!"
She buried her head in her hands and closed her eyes.
"I suck as a friend."
"You just have a boyfriend, Lils, it's normal."
The girl jumped while Clara was laughing at her, standing right behind her friend. She smiled at Lily, taking the seat next to her, facing Sirius.
"Oh God, Clara, I'm so sorry!" the redhead apologized again.
"Don't be, it's okay. I got help anyway."
She pointed at Sirius, whom answered with a smile, trying to swallow his mouthful of bread. Lily didn’t seem fully convinced, but she smiled anyway and was about to resume her dinner when Remus cleared his throat. All turned to him. He seemed… uncomfortable, all of a sudden. Nervous, even.
"Girls, Sirius told me you... knew. About me... and… my secret."
The four girls looked at each other at first, but they quickly aimed accusatory glares towards Clara.
"What?" the girl asked innocently.
"You told him we knew?" asked Marlene in disbelief.
"I… not exactly… I told Sirius. Who apparently told Remus…"
"Why?" asked Lily.
"Why not?"
"Shit, Clara," replied Alice, shaking her head.
"What?! We don't even care."
"He shouldn't have learned we knew that way," explained Dorcas.
"Oh, come on, you're making a scene out of nothing right now, really."
"No, we're not!"
"Yes, you are!"
"Clara, we should have told him directly!"
"Lils, it doesn't matter really."
Clara turned her attention back to Remus, who’s wide eyes revealed how lost he was. He wasn’t sure if he ought to laugh or be terrified by the whole thing…
"We guessed two years ago,” Clara explained. “We don't care, and won't say anything to anyone. You don't have to worry about that."
"You're sure it's okay?" asked Remus, surprised.
"Of course, it's fine Remus," Lily reassured him, smiling kindly. "We don't care."
Remus sighed heavily, clearly relieved, his tensed shoulders visibly relaxing.
"Right then, I guess it's alright as long as you don't say anything to anyone."
"We won't, don't worry," Alice reassured him too.
"But why didn't you tell me anything?"
"We figured out that it was best if it came from you," explained Lily. "But as Clara can't keep her mouth shut..."
"I'm the one who should be angry tonight, not you Lils," Clara reminded her friend, adding some dramatic tone to her voice that made the Marauders chuckle. "I'm the one who was left abandoned in the library, when her best friend was snogging a boy in a dark corner."
Lily blushed hard and bent her head above her plate.
"We didn't snog."
Clara rolled her eyes, but didn't add anything. Facing her, Sirius was fighting his urge to let out a proper laugh. He felt like it was time to change the subject, so he cleared his throat and turned towards James.
"By the way, Clara wants to go to the try-outs on Saturday."
"Really?" asked James, suddenly terribly interested in the conversation.
"Yep! I'm finally coming this year. Marlene too, by the way."
"No, I'm not," replied Marlene, sending a look full of warning to Clara.
"Yes, you are," Lily fought back. "You love Quidditch, Marls! And as Clara is doing it, you should do it too."
“Marls, that would be awesome!” Dorcas nodded, overexcited. “We would play together! That would be amazing! I would finally stop being the only girl on the team… you’ve got to come to the try-outs!”
"Of course, you should!" James encouraged her.
Sirius nodded enthusiastically too.
"Which position will you try? Chaser I guess," added James.
"Marlene yes. I'm trying for Beater," answered Clara.
James propped up an eyebrow.
"Are you sure you're strong enough to be a Beater?" asked Peter.
Clara rolled her eyes.
"I'm not that fragile, I can fly and hit a Bludger with a bat. Yes, I'm strong enough, and yes, I'm sure I want to try for the position of Beater."
James shrugged.
"We'll see how you do on Saturday then."
"We'll see indeed."
It was a little strange still to chat like this with the Marauders, to laugh together and have full conversations with the whole group; strange, but nice all the same. That evening, once again, neither James nor Lily got upset, they even laughed together a couple of times.
After their dinner, they walked back to the Tower together, still chatting. As they entered the Common Room, about to break their large group and head for their dorms, Clara held Sirius back for a second.
"You said you wanted to see my drawing when it was done. Here you go!"
She took a piece of paper out of her bag and handed it to him. He unfolded it, and his mouth fell open as he was looking at a moving drawing of the Lake. A gentle breeze was making the trees sway, the lake and the sky were on fire and burning clouds were drifting slowly across the bright sky. It was beautiful.
"Merlin, Clara! You're really good at this!"
"You think so?" she asked shyly.
"Of course! It's amazing!"
She grinned, and shook her head as he was handing it back to her.
"You can keep it."
"You're sure?"
"Of course, I have hundreds of drawings of the Lake. Keep this one."
"Thank you. Good night, Clara."
"Good night, Sirius!"
They both headed to their dormitories, and Sirius put safely her drawing in his Transfiguration textbook. He was exhausted, and closed his curtains to sleep early, a grin on his face as he peacefully drifted away.

Halloween came quickly after their meeting and since Severus had done nothing further to let her in on whatever he thought the boys were up Daisy was a bundle of nerves. Her nerves were reflected in the way she dressed unusually quickly the morning of Halloween, eager to see if she could catch him before breakfast. It was a move that made Lily eye her curiously but she ignored her and they made their way downstairs finding the Great Hall virtually empty.
‘I can’t wait for the party tonight,’ Alice said as she sat down and grabbed a couple of pieces of toast.  ‘Me too actually,’ Lily said.  ‘Have you got your costume together?’ Marlene asked given that their quest last weekend to Hogsmeade hadn’t reaped much meaning each of them had been relying on owl post to get the finishing touches together. ‘Yeah,’ Daisy said, she had been fortunate, having picked a devil all she had had to do was find a red dress and a pair of horns which she’d even managed to charm into looking more realistic.  ‘I still can’t get my wig quite right,’ Lily said which caused Marlene to dive into an explanation about how she could get anyone’s hair right with an intense combination of spells and potions and that she would set to work after their classes. Daisy wasn’t really listening to them anymore she was looking at Severus who was facing her way but speaking to someone she didn’t recognise. Watching him she felt her nerves bubble again. She wasn’t going to see him till tonight and the only time they had spent together had had Lily involved so she had no chance to speak to him properly. If she was going to feel more settled about the whole thing she needed to talk to him.
‘You alright Dais?’ Lily said watching her sister as she stared into the middle distance.  ‘Yeah fine,’ Daisy said, ‘I’m just gonna go talk to Sev okay?’  ‘Why?’ Lily asked curiously.  ‘I leant him some quills the other day and he’s not given them back to me,’ she lied. Lily’s eyes narrowed but Daisy didn’t wait for any questions as she quickly rose from her seat and walked around to the Slytherin table. Severus looked up as she got to the table as did his friend. She recognised him though he couldn’t recall his name and she was sure he wasn’t in their year, perhaps a couple below. His blonde hair fell in his eyes as he looked at her but she could still see how they narrowed as he took her in.
‘Hey Sev,’ she said sitting down.  ‘No one said you could sit there,’ the blonde boy sneered. ‘Good job I didn’t ask anyone then,’ she retorted.  ‘Leave us for a minute, Barty,’ Severus mumbled. The blond-haired boy’s eyes went dark at the boy’s words but he said nothing and instead got up and moved down the table out of earshot.  ‘What’s his problem?’ Daisy asked.  ‘He’s not a big fan of,’ Severus paused as if realising his words. ‘Of?’ Daisy pressed. ‘…muggleborns,’ he finished. Daisy’s stomach flip-flopped. Of course, she knew of the supremacy some purebloods felt over their blood status but she’d been fortunate not to have experienced anything negative the fact that Severus spent time with him considering his ties with Lily and Daisy made her feel uneasy.  ‘Oh,’ she said quietly.  ‘Ignore him,’ he said, ‘what did you want?’  ‘I want to know what’s happening tonight. Have you found out anything more?’ she asked. Severus’ face broke into a smile as he nodded though he didn’t offer any information.
‘Well?’ she asked.
‘It’s just a hunch,’ he shrugged, ‘we’ll see if we’re right tonight.’  ‘When?’ Daisy questioned. ‘They said they weren’t going to be at the feast right? So I say we meet in the entrance hall at half five,’ he said.  ‘Right,’ she agreed, ‘wait, what do I say to Lily?’  ‘Just say you’re meeting me?’ he shrugged. Daisy shook her head.  ‘No way. She’ll either want to come or force me to tell her what we’re doing and ban me from doing it,’ she said.  ‘Then think of an excuse… because it’s gotta be tonight,’ Severus said seriously. Daisy nodded though the way his demeanour changed made her feel uneasy.
The day passed as slow as could be expected. After her little rendezvous with Severus Lily kept giving her sister suspicious looks and though Daisy tried to ignore them she felt on edge. Throughout her lessons, Daisy tried to spy on James and his friends but as karma would have it today was the day they spent mostly in electives, which meant she only shared a class with them every so often.
Eventually, school finished and everyone raced back to their common rooms in order to prepare for the feast and the parties that were sure to follow in each common room and as soon as the bell rang for the end of the day Daisy raced back to her room hoping that she’d be able to change and get downstairs without Lily’s scrutiny. Yet when she got back to the dormitory she found her roommates had beaten her to it and were gathered around one bed working on Lily’s wig. They barely even looked up as Daisy mumbled a greeting and raced into the bathroom, yet as she emerged having had a shower and dressed into casual clothes she found Lily was on her immediately.
‘Aren’t you wearing your costume?’ Lily asked standing up as she took in the jeans and t-shirt her sister was now sporting. Daisy looked down at her outfit, stalling for an excuse given that in her haste she’d forgotten she’d not thought of a reason why she wasn’t going to the feast.  ‘No… I didn’t think we were wearing them to the feast,’ Daisy said.  ‘Frank and his friends are,’ Alice chimed in.  ‘Yeah, let’s show them what we’re bringing,’ Marlene said, twirling around in her costume so that Daisy could see. Daisy had to admit as costumes went it was pretty impressive given that her angel costume had a real-life halo floating above her head, illuminating her pretty features and making her look radiant as always.
‘Yeah,’ Daisy said though she couldn’t think of dressing up as Severus’ words still rang in her ears. With that she sat down on her bed a little heavier than intended.  ‘You alright?’ Alice asked from the bed opposite her. ‘Yeah, just feeling a bit rubbish is all,’ Daisy said, fiddling with her costume that was laid out on her bed.  ‘You were alright this morning,’ Lily said suspiciously as she started slipping on her wig. Her gingham dress and ruby slippers were laid out on her bed. Ever the bibliophile Lily had opted for a book character, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. ‘I know,’ Daisy said, ‘I started feeling a little unwell in ancient runes.’ ‘I didn’t notice,’ Lily said.  ‘Well sorry I don’t tell you every time I feel a bit iffy,’ Daisy snapped.  ‘I’m sure it’s nothing,’ Alice said trying to diffuse the tension that settled in the air immediately.
Fortunately it worked though the twins figured her case was supported given that Alice was sporting a pair of whiskers and charmed mouse ears. Lily giggled and moved to hug her sister with one arm as she muttered, ‘sorry Dais.’ ‘It’s alright. I just hope I feel better for the feast. I’ve hardly eaten today to save room,’ she chuckled.  ‘That’s probably why then!’ Alice said.  ‘She had a full pie and chips at lunchtime I doubt that’s it,’ Marlene giggled.  ‘Alright, alright,’ Daisy said. ‘Why don’t you nip to Madam Pomfrey?’ Lily suggested, ‘she might be able to give you some ‘Pepper Up’ potion that’ll get you right for the party.’  ‘Good idea Lil,’ Daisy said standing up and trying not to seem too eager above the excuse her sister had provided. Once she’d had tucked her wand into her pocket she then headed to the door grabbing a jacket as she went. ‘See you at the feast, yeah?’ she said. She heard the girls’ shouts as she closed the door behind her and headed down to meet Severus.
He was pacing in the entrance hall when she got down there though he looked up as she came down the stairs rushing to meet her in an instance. He looked nervous and Daisy just thanked her lucky stars that there was no one around to see them. Where the hall was normally full of students heading to dinner tonight it was empty, most people probably spending extra time putting finishing touches to their outfits.
‘Hey,’ she said meekly though it was cut off as they heard movement in the Great Hall, Severus’ whipping his head around to check they weren’t going to be caught loitering. As he looked away she took a moment to take him in. His black hair hung limply around his face, unmoving, though his robes billowed behind him, the gust from under the front door was enough to move the black material. Daisy frowned, wondering why he hadn’t changed from his uniform until he turned back, creating enough of a gap to see that he was wearing pants and a simple black jumper. And though she didn’t know why she suddenly felt underdressed.
‘Hey,’ she repeated hoping he’d reply to her this time.
‘Hey,’ he replied.  ‘Have you seen them?’ she asked. He shook his head and then suddenly he grabbed her arm and moved her over to the broom cupboard near the steps to the dungeon before quickly opening the door and forcing her inside.  ‘Sev what are you doing?’ she asked wrenching her arm out of his grasp as she turned to face him.  ‘They’re going to be coming through here, I’m sure,’ he said obliviously. ‘Okay but is there any reason to manhandle me,’ she snapped dusting off her jacket. Severus mumbled an apology but then went to the door and cracked it open so they could see the entire entrance hall.  ‘So what now?’ she asked.  ‘We wait,’ he said simply. She was still miffed at being manhandled into the cupboard but as she thought about she realised he was right. If they were going to go anywhere it was most likely going to be via here and if someone saw them hiding they’d no doubt be rumbled. And so she accepted her fate and nodded, moving to find an upturned mop bucket so that she could sit down. As Severus stood by the cracked door, his eye pressed to it, Daisy sighed realising it was going to be a long night.
✵✵✵
Daisy’s bum was numb. She had been sitting on the mop bucket for nearly two hours with Severus kneeling in front of her, faring no better. From his vantage point, he had seen the hordes of students come from all directions and filter into the great hall leaving the entrance hall empty again.
‘Sev, we’re missing the feast and for nothing,’ Daisy whined.
‘They’ll come okay,’ he said, his gaze still transfixed to the crack in the door.
‘What makes you so sure that they’ll even come through here? I mean they could be doing anything, anywhere in the castle and we’re sat here like lemons. I’m starving-’ Daisy started though she cut off as Severus held a hand up in front of her, shushing her quickly. Looking through the gap Severus heard the clack of heels on the stone floor before he saw a flurry of green robes appear. McGonagall appeared from the great hall, closing the door behind her as Daisy got to her knees, peering over Severus’ shoulder as the head of house spoke.
‘Ah Mr Lupin, I thought I’d missed you for a moment,’ she said, a kind smile that Daisy had never seen before gracing her face. Daisy heard Remus speak before she saw him landing at the bottom of the steps in front of the woman she was watching.
‘Sorry Professor,’ he said, ‘I left the dormitory later than planned.’
‘Well, no bother,’ she said, putting a tender hand on his shoulder for a moment before she seemed to bethink herself and straighten up adding, ‘come on before it gets too late.’
‘Okay professor,’ Remus said following her as she started to walk towards the big double doors which they left through quietly.
‘What now?’ Daisy whispered as if they were going to hear her though they were long gone.
‘Hang on,’ Severus said. Daisy sunk back onto her heels. What was the point? They had been looking for something suspicious, an activity they could use as leverage with a teacher but it seemed that whatever they were involved in already involved one anyway which kind of thwarted the idea. Not to mention whatever Remus was up to seemed to have McGonagall acting almost maternal which in itself was weird. After about five minutes, McGonagall returned through the double doors and quickly walked through the hall and back into the great hall as if she were never gone. There was a snapshot of sound as the doors opened and Daisy could hear the rabble and raucousness of the feast she was missing. It made her want to give up on this madness, to forget they’d even bothered trying to get one over on Potter and his gang. In fact, she was just about to tell Severus to hang it up when there was a sound of footsteps on the stairs and though she couldn’t see anyone as she peered over her friend’s head she could hear the sound of whispered arguing.
‘You’re on my foot Wormtail,’ came a low voice she faintly recognised.
‘Sorry, ow,’ came the reply.
‘Shut it you two before Filch comes running,’ came another voice. The voices were closer now but Daisy still couldn’t see them. Her mind drifted back to her date in her third year with James. The invisibility cloak. At the time she hadn’t known what it was but after a Lily style research period she had learned of the existence of such things, hence why they got away with so much stuff.
‘It’s them,’ she whispered. Severus nodded in front of her keeping his eye trained on the doors.
‘Are we covered?’ one of the voices said, Sirius if she had to guess.
‘Yeah, doors are closed,’ came a squeaky reply, Peter, definitely.
‘Right come on then,’ the final voice which she could only assume to be James said. Suddenly, the three boys appeared from nowhere in front of the front doors of the castle. Sirius pushed his hair out of his eyes whilst James tucked the cloak up and stuffed it in his jacket pocket. Peter seemed to be nursing a knock to the eye which Daisy assumed was the cause of the ‘ow’. Whilst Sirius and Peter kept an eye out in either direction James opened one of the double doors slowly and as quietly as possible, holding it open and allowing his friends to duck through the small gap before following them and closing it with a small ‘thunk’.
‘Come on,’ Severus said standing up and opening the door to the broom cupboard.
‘Won’t they see us?’ Daisy asked, biting her lip as they exited.
‘When do they pay attention to anyone but themselves?’ Severus said bitterly as he stretched out his aching muscles. Daisy could feel a twinge in her back from sitting for so long but she ignored it as she tried to keep pace with Severus. They were at the front door within seconds, Severus opening it as quietly as James had and allowing Daisy to duck out first.
The air was crisp and cool against Daisy’s face, a comfort after spending hours cramped up in a cupboard.  Given that the sun had set hours earlier the courtyard was barren of light, the only illumination coming from the castle windows as even the moon hadn’t appeared yet, bus she could see the figures of the boys as they disappeared down the trail that led off the bridge out of the grounds. However they didn’t follow in that direction automatically. Instead Daisy followed Severus as he walked to the edge of the courtyard no doubt scouting for a better view. They were a way down the path now, their chatter floating back up in their direction though she couldn’t make out their words clearly. Still they didn’t move and instead watched as they carried on towards the Whomping Willow. It was only when they passed Hagrid’s hut did Severus start walking, convinced they were far enough away that they wouldn’t see the pair behind them.
‘Where are they going?’ Daisy whispered curiously though Severus didn’t say anything in response. His face was frosty and his jaw taut as he stormed ahead forcing her to go at a jogging pace to keep up. The small breeze ruffled his hair and robes but he didn’t seem to care, as he was focused on the task at hand. It made Daisy feel uneasy but she didn’t say anything and soon enough they were walking past Hagrid’s cabin and towards the long grass that ran along the side of the Whomping Willow. It was only when they got within a hundred yards of the tree did Daisy realise the boys had stopped, standing in front of it as if waiting for something.
‘Get down,’ Severus said, forcing her down behind the long grass as James took a precautionary glance around the grounds. He didn’t see her though she wasn’t sure how as they were close enough that she could hear him as he took out his wand and shouted, ‘immobulus.’  At his command the Whomping Willow’s vigorous limbs slowed but didn’t stop which made her suspect whatever charm they’d used wouldn’t hold for long. It wasn’t until Peter jogged forward and pushed a large knot on the front of the tree did the branches fall completely still, allowing the boys to get closer. Daisy poked her head up, hoping if they looked around her blonde locks would blend in with the dry grass she was knelt in, and watched as the three of them rushed forward, towards a gap in the roots of the tree, climbing into it and out of sight. Daisy’s eyes bugged in their sockets as they vanished. It wasn’t a big hole, and yet all three boys fit perfectly inside and didn’t return even after a couple of minutes. Questions bounced around in her brain. What were they doing? Where did they go? Yet she didn’t have time to ponder on her questions as she was yanked up from the long grass by Severus who then led her towards the Whomping Willow’s gaping hole.
‘We don’t have much time,’ he mumbled as he uttered another staying charm over the plant.
‘What do you mean?’ she said, allowing herself to be dragged forward by his non-wand hand.
‘We’ve got to follow them,’ he said as if it were self-explanatory. She was by no means a coward, but the idea of climbing into the unknown through a violent tree’s roots filled her with some trepidation.
‘We don’t know what’s in there,’ Daisy reasoned.
‘I’ve got a hunch,’ Severus said truthfully, ‘but we can’t prove anything if we don’t see it, yeah?’
‘Sev,’ she hesitated earning an expectant look from her friend. Daisy looked at the hole and then at her friend’s serious face. She knew he had a point and they’d come this far. Not to mention all this secrecy meant whatever it was had to be big right? Expulsion worthy and that was what they both wanted. So, ignoring the knot in her stomach she nodded and followed Severus as he climbed inside the large hole and disappeared out of sight. It was dark and dirty inside the hole and Daisy winced as she felt along the wall to pull herself up from where she had fallen on her knees. The drop wasn’t a big one but she hadn’t been sure of how far down she was going and had over-prepared which toppled her over.
‘It’s a tunnel,’ Severus whispered seemingly not noticing she had fallen. Or not caring.
‘To where?’ she said.
‘I have an idea,’ he said though he didn’t elaborate further. Instead, he just lit up the tip of his wand and started walking ahead. He was right, it was a tunnel and from the state of it, Daisy guessed it was deep underground. She followed Severus through the long winding tunnel wondering just where it led to and trying to ignore the sickly feeling in her stomach. She couldn’t hear the boys anywhere and she could barely see anything past Severus’ wand tip.
After walking what felt like forever Daisy could finally see a fuzzy patch of light in the distance and as they got closer it got bigger until finally, they were at the entrance to a room. Severus stepped into it followed by Daisy who had only just realised she had been clinging to the back of his robes. The room wasn’t big and was comprised mostly of an old rickety staircase and a couple of doors on the ground floor but they had been boarded up so no one could enter in or out and the tunnel seemed to be the only entrance.
‘Sev,’ Daisy said trying to hide the nerves in her voice, ‘where are we?’
‘I think we’re in the shrieking shack,’ Severus said calmly though whatever attention had had been paying her disappeared as his head snapped upwards, to where a noise had come from above them. There was movement somewhere upstairs and Severus wasted no time in investigating. As he crept quietly up the stairs Daisy followed behind reluctantly. He seemed to be eager to get to whatever was going on up there but she was still trying to take in the fact they were in the shrieking shack, her eyes roving over every inch of the building. The walls were decorated with wallpaper that had long since faded and was even missing in some places. The only light a barren bulb above them which seemed to be trying it’s hardest to offer a dim flicker. And the staircase was in disrepair, the wood now grey from grime and it had several scratches all over the steps and spindles. Just looking at it Daisy wondered how it was even supporting the weight of the two of them yet the staircase seemed to notice her mocking as it let out an almighty creak as her foot hit the next step. Daisy winced, mouthing an apology as Severus whipped around and glared at her, pausing for a moment to make sure it hadn’t been loud enough to capture any attention before he continued upwards, Daisy following behind him until they reached the landing.
Like downstairs, there were only two rooms. The double doors in front of them were shut but the other door was ajar so that she could see inside enough to know it was a bathroom. There was a grime-stained sink just beyond the door and the tiled floor looked just as manky. She dreaded to think what the toilet looked like. Yet her attention was caught from thinking of grubby lavatories as she heard voices just beyond the door. Severus was just in front of her, his ear pressed gently against it so he could hear though Daisy had no trouble from a foot away.
‘Are you sure it will work?’ came a soft, unsure voice. Remus.
‘Mate, we’ve been practising for ages,’ a louder voice Daisy recognised as James’.
‘And we’re pretty good,’ a lower voice said. Sirius.
‘But what if you get-’ Remus started.
‘We understand the risks,’ James said cutting him off.
‘Yes, we understand the risks. Yes, we hope it will help. Yes we know it’s not a dead cert,’ Sirius said.
‘But we give anything a go,’ a different voice, she assumed was Peter, chirped.
‘Right,’ Remus said, ‘but you promise at the first sign of trouble you’re out of here?’
‘We promise mother,’ James teased.
‘What are they doing?’ Daisy whispered.
‘I don’t know,’ Severus snapped.
‘I was only asking,’ she replied defensively leaning in to hear better.
‘How long does it take?’ James said nervously.
‘Usually a few hours,’ Remus said, ‘depends on the month.’
‘So what if we can’t hold it?’ Sirius said.
‘You get out,’ Remus said.
‘Wormtail, you transform first. You can hold out the longest,’ James instructed. Peter replied with something she couldn’t make out.
‘I’ll go next,’ Sirius said.
‘Then me…just in case there are teething problems,’ James said.
‘Teething problems are the least of our worries,’ Remus said. He was further away now, so much so Daisy could barely hear him. James too seemed distant when he spoke next.
‘Come on mate, it’ll work. We’ve been working on this for months,’ James said.
‘Yeah I can hold my other form for nearly a day now,’ Peter added.
‘And as we go we’ll all be able to make it a bit longer,’ James said.
‘And then we’ll be the best damn anamagi you could want with you,’ Sirius chipped in.
‘Ready Wormtail?’ James said. There was a scuffling noise and then a small cheer from the boys but Daisy wasn’t paying attention.
Anamagi.
Daisy tried to place the word. She recognised it from one of her lessons but she couldn’t pull it from where. Severus seemed to have no trouble realising what they were talking about as his face broke into a devious grin.
‘We’ve got em now,’ he said and before Daisy could protest he burst in through the double doors.
Daisy heard the commotion before she saw it and by the time she had followed Severus into what she discovered was a bedroom she was confronted by four boys all holding up their wands.
‘Evans?!’ James said, disbelief on his face as she appeared from behind the door. Daisy paused, lingering behind Severus as she took the scene in. James was standing by the bed, his wand up towards Severus, whilst Sirius and Peter stood behind him holding the same stance. Remus however was sitting on the dusty old bed, looking grief stricken at their appearance in the room.   ‘What are you doing here?’ Sirius spat.  ‘I knew you were up to something. And I knew it was bad but this is beyond anything I could have thought,’ Severus said.  ‘I don’t doubt that you have trouble comprehending things Snivellus but you need to leave now,’ Sirius replied. It was a dig of course but from the way his grey eyes were now almost black with fury Daisy didn’t doubt the seriousness behind his words. The look alone made her shrink back behind her friend, tugging at his sleeve as she said, ‘Sev we should go.’  ‘No!’ the black-haired boy shouted and though he was speaking to her he kept his gaze forward determined not to be ambushed by any of them as she continued, ‘I came to prove they were up to no good and I’m not leaving till I’ve got proof!’ ‘James,’ Remus said unevenly, cutting whatever ranting Severus was doing off. In fact he didn’t even seem to be paying attention to Severus, no, he looked more concerned with the fact he was now pumping sweat, something Daisy could see even though she was across the room. She watched him push his now damp sandy blonde hair from his face with a tremoring hand, looking as though his sole focus was on not throwing up. Unfortunately for the boy though James didn’t pay him any attention as his focus was now on them as he started to move into the middle of the room. Sirius and Peter followed his lead placing themselves strategically as if they were circling the pair, blocking them from escaping.
‘What proof do you want Snivellus?’ Sirius spat, as he moved to the side of them, equal amount of distance from the door should they try and run. ‘Enough to take to Dumbledore. Or even better the minister for magic,’ Severus said with venom. At that Daisy’s eyes went wide. ‘The ministry?’ Daisy baulked, ‘Sev what-’ ‘Don’t you see? They’re animagi! They-’ ‘They transform into animals,’ Daisy said cutting him off as she finally recalled where she had learned the term before, a memory of Professor McGonagall turning herself into a cat in front of the class coming to mind. ‘So what?’ Peter said, snapping their attention to their other side, ‘it doesn’t affect you in any way.’  ‘No, but it is illegal. And I want to know why,’ Severus said.
‘It’s got nothing to do with you,’ James said, moving closer as did Sirius the pair of them forcing Severus towards the window at wand point. Daisy didn’t follow, opting to shrink back towards the wall, though she was stopped from fleeing as Peter took a stand by the door, his beady eyes watching her closely.
‘I disagree,’ Severus said unable to let any bravado go even if he was like a rat in a trap. ‘Sev, they’re breaking the rules, that’s good enough,’ Daisy said, ‘let’s just leave.’ ‘No, they’re doing it for a reason,’ he snapped.  ‘Our motives have nothing to do with you, Snape,’ James said and for once Daisy agreed. They were breaking the rules, not only school rules but the law, that was good enough for her. They didn’t need anything else in fact all the needed to do now was get out of there. Though as she felt her back hit the wall she realised they weren’t going to be able to go anywhere, not without James, Sirius and Peter letting them. They were trapped.
‘Tell me why,’ Severus pressed.  ‘You’re so clever, figure it out yourself,’ Sirius snapped.  ‘I already know. I just want you to say it,’ Severus said darkly. ‘Why?’ James questioned. ‘So he can use his memories in a pensive,’ Remus said thickly. He was ashen now even paler than normal and his skin was gleaming with sweat. He was shaking now and for a moment she wondered if he was ill, the sweat on his brow from a fever, but as she noted the way his knuckles were clenching at the bed frame so tightly it looked as though it was going to splinter beneath his grip she doubted that was the case. Whatever it was couldn’t have been good though as it immediately made Sirius drop his tirade against Severus and head to him, dropping to kneel beside his friend who attempted to push him away albeit weakly.
‘Moony,’ Sirius protested but Remus shook his head.
‘You hate us that much?’ James spat, and though her gaze stayed transfixed on Sirius and Remus she couldn’t help but listen. ‘You hate me too. Fairs fair,’ Severus retorted.  ‘Not enough to do this. Run you out of school, damage your reputation in the wizarding world. Do you know what will happen if the school finds out about this? We’re helping him. It doesn’t hurt anyone…we wouldn’t ruin your life like this,’ James said.  ‘You already have,’ Severus said, ‘you ruin it every day with your words, your actions-’ ‘Pads,’ Remus’ weak voice said. Sirius nodded, Daisy’s eyes didn’t not leaving him as he straightened up  until she heard Severus say, ‘and I’m going to do the same to you. You and your little werewolf.’
With that James launched himself at Severus, breaking the glass behind him and knocking him to the floor as the two rolled around in a fistfight with Daisy watching the pair of them hopelessly trying to take in the boy’s words.
Werewolf.
Remus was a werewolf.
But this new information was something Daisy didn’t have time to dwell on because was a thunderous clatter from the bed. She turned to follow the noise but she didn’t see anything but the floor as she was knocked to the ground. The next thing she saw was Sirius’ grey eyes watching her with alarm.
‘Get under the bed,’ he barked and Daisy didn’t argue. He disappeared as she crawled underneath the heavy wooden bed frame, watching what bits of the boys she could see move around the room. James and Severus were still fighting now, only the bottom of their legs visible from her hiding place. Yet as she took her focus off them she noted another pair of legs, furry and tremoring. Wolf’s legs.
Daisy’s heart turned to ice. For a moment she could hear Sirius trying to direct the situation but he was drowned out by a howl and then the room went into pandemonium. The wolf’s howl seemed to be a wake-up call and whatever debacle they’d been having seemed to be forgotten as they rushed into action. She couldn’t see their faces from under the bed but she heard James’ voice clear as day as he shouted,
‘Wormtail get him out.’  ‘Prongs you need to change,’ Sirius said, ‘I’ll get the girl.’
Daisy didn’t move but her heart started to beat a little slower as the wolf’s paw padded away from her, stalking its prey, the newly formed stag on the other side of the room. James had transformed and he was baiting his friend. As James lured the wolf down to the other end of the room, towards another door that led to the adjoining bathroom, Sirius appeared and yanked Daisy out from under the bed. Peter and Severus were now absent from the room, having been close to the door now she assumed they escaped, as Sirius was trying to get her to do.
‘Come on,’ he grunted, pulling her by her jacket sleeve towards the door. Given that she could barely see due to the dust that had settled in her eyes from under the bed she allowed him to drag her, trying to keep her focus on the flop of black hair in front of her. Fortunately he got her to the door within seconds pushing her roughly through it as he barked at her to run but just as he did he was bowled over, the wolf pouncing at them and taking him to the floor in front of her eyes. She fell too, the haphazardness of the attack taking her down onto the landing floor, just beyond the door. It stunned her, knocking the wind from her lungs which meant that when she attempted to move she found it agonising to do so. As she lay there she could hear the clatter of hooves on a tile floor but they seemed to be moving away from her towards the other side of the bathroom. Daisy couldn’t pay attention to the noise. She didn’t have time.
Though she had barely caught her breath she pushed herself up off the floor, heading towards the stairs as quickly as she could, but her foot had no sooner touched the ground before it was off again. That wasn’t what she was focused on though. No, her focus was the white-hot pain that tore through her body as long claws sunk into her abdomen shredding her to ribbons as she tried to pull away. She pushed, kicking her feet and screaming as its head moved towards her, the wolf’s eyes glinting with excitement as he bared his teeth towards her ready to bite.
And then it was gone.
The chaos and fear of it all was gone, replaced by the only thing she could comprehend. Pain. Agony tore through every bone, every muscle, every cell of her body and she couldn’t make it stop.
Above her, the carnage continued. In an effort to stop Remus from biting her Sirius had transformed and attacked, bowling the wolf over and back into the bathroom as he loosened his grip on the girl. The wolf had been stunned, getting himself to his feet dazed and confused but before he could resume his attack both of the bathroom doors had slammed shut with James and Sirius holding them closed on the other side until they managed to get the locks hexed so that he couldn’t break free.
‘Pads,’ James said as he came around the doorway to the bedroom. He was bloodied, bruised and sure his nose was broken but alive. He flung his arms around Sirius, happy to see him alive as well even though he too looked bedraggled. Though as they broke apart realisation seemed to dawn on Sirius and he looked to the landing which was empty. His eyes trailed up to the banister railing which was now broken and splintered into a thousand pieces. He walked to the edge, his stomach in knots, and looked over to see the destruction below. It was carnage, bits of wood and debris littering the now broken staircase below, and in amongst it all Daisy.
‘Pads, what is it?’ James asked but the boy wasn’t listening. Instead, he was hurtling down the stairs hurriedly followed by James who took the stairs two at a time in an effort to catch up though as he reached the middle landing he wished he hadn’t. Daisy was laying a couple steps down, her body littered with wounds that gushed bright dark blood. James watched as Sirius knelt beside her, taking her arm to feel for a pulse which to his relief he found.
‘What happened?!’ James said kneeling on the other side of the girl, trying to keep his eyes trained on Sirius’ ashen face instead of the deep slashes that littered her abdomen and made him feel sick ‘I tried to get him off her,’ Sirius said guiltily feeling his gut churn. If only he’d knocked Remus the other way. Hell even if the two of them had gone over the banister he doubted either of them would’ve come off this badly. ‘It’s not your fault,’ James said seeing where the boy’s train of thought was going. ‘He threw her because of me,’ Sirius snapped.  ‘She came here because of Snape. Not you,’ James said reaching out to put a reassuring hand on his friend’s shoulder. Sirius didn’t say anything but he did offer a curt nod as if he accepted what his friend was saying.
‘What do we do? Should we get Dumbledore?’ James whispered. She was bleeding heavily and at least two of her limbs seemed to be protruding the opposite way from what they should but James didn’t know how to move her. The thud above them answered that question. The wolf was done pacing and was now trying to break free.  ‘We don’t have time,’ Sirius said, ‘you get her legs. I’ll get her head.’ ‘Okay,’ James nodded, moving down the stairs and grabbing both of her legs with his hands, trying to ignore the squelch her ankle made when he moved it.  ‘On the count of three,’ Sirius said, shifting his arms underneath her core trying to hold her as securely but as gently as he could.  ‘Ready,’ James nodded.  ‘One, two, three,’ Sirius said as the boys thrust her up and out of the debris. Upon movement Daisy’s face scrunched up in pain but she didn’t say anything and Sirius tried to ignore it as the guilt threatened to swirl up inside him once more.
Once they were on solid ground it was easier to move her and they managed to readjust her in a position that spread her weight out equally between them which meant her wounds slowed their incessant oozing. In the cajoling James managed to get his wand out and illuminate the tunnel so they could see where they were going. Sirius didn’t know if the path back to the castle had always been this long or it was made worse by the fact neither of them spoke but time seemed to pass slowly as they walked, careful not to do any more damage, but hurried to get to safety. They didn’t pass either Snape or Peter on the way back to the castle but as the lights got nearer they could hear the calamity of people ahead until finally they were immersed in chaos yet again. As they got to the courtyard several teachers spilled out of the castle, McGonagall and Dumbledore included, and Daisy seemed to rouse at their voices.
Sirius watched as her face creased in pain as she was fussed over. She didn’t waken though, not properly. She tried to, she tried to come back to consciousness long enough to scream in the hopes it would make them stop manhandling her but she couldn’t get her mouth to form any sort of sound. The last thing she remembered was opening her eyes and seeing two grey ones staring back at her. And then she blacked out.

You stirred as you felt the mattress shift beneath you, a second’s confusion clouding your tired mind before you recognized the familiar rhythm of his breathing and the scent of leather and warm spice. Still, your brow furrowed even as your fingers stropped curling around the handle of the blade tucked between the mattress and the wall beside it.
“Quill?”
He hesitated where he loomed over you, and you rolled over, halfway onto your back to crane your neck towards him. It took your eyes a moment to adjust to the lack of light, but you made out the shape of him, a shadow in a darker shade of black than the room around him. His voice came quietly, his words heavy. “I’m sorry, did I wake you?”
“Did you—?” Only the fact that you were still half-asleep stopped you from scoffing incredulously. Still, the darkness kept your volume no higher than a hiss. “It’s the middle of the night and you’ve just broken into my quarters! Of course you woke me!”
“Sorry,” he said again, and you frowned as you noticed the slurring of his words. You inhaled, the all-too-familiar scent of alcohol flooding your nose. “Sorry, I—”
You sighed, running a hand over your eyes. The last few days… you’d thought he’d been improving. After Mantis dropped their familial bomb and after all the crap with Kevin Bacon… he’d seemed like he was starting to ease up with the self-medication over losing Gamora. You’d lost count of how many times you’d watched the others pull him up from where he’d passed out on the floor or slumped over a table and carry him off to his bunk. But you… you’d been keeping your distance.
“You’re drunk, Quill.” you said, and he shook his head, but it wasn’t so much a denial as it was just tired acceptance. “How’d you even get in here?”
You’re barely made out the shrug of one of his shoulders. “Picked it.”
Rolling your eyes, you sat up. You caught hold of his bicep as he swayed unsteadily, threatening to fall of the edge of the bed. “Of course, you did,” you replied dryly. “You can barely stay upright, but you picked my lock, no problem.”
How you hadn’t woken up during the minutes he’d undoubtedly spent fumbling drunkenly at the lock, you had no idea.
“Need a better lock.”
“I’ll make a note of it.”
He chuckled weakly, his voice catching in his throat. “I can’t… I can’t…”
“Quill?”
He sighed, moving to stand up. You found yourself moving instinctively with him despite yourself, catching hold of his wrist as his arm slipped out of your grasp. He stopped, and even in the dark, you could see his face turn back towards yours. You chewed the inside of your lip for a moment before speaking again.
“What are you doing in here?”
You felt his arm turn under your fingers and a shiver ran through you as his hand encircled your own wrist. His skin was warm against yours despite the cool air of your cabin. His grip was light, almost uncertain.
“Quill?”
“You’re avoiding me.”
You hesitated, taken aback. Honestly, you’d thought he’d been so drunk and so stuck on wallowing in that pit he’d built over Gamora that he wouldn’t even notice your absence. Or if he did, he wouldn’t care. You released his arm, but his own hand tightened ever-so-slightly on your wrist.
“You… you’re avoidin’ me,” he said again, and his voice thickened slightly, the beginnings of tears lodged in his throat. “She’s gone and you’re… I’m so sick of being…”
Alone.
You leaned forward, wrapping your arms around his shoulders and pulling him towards you. Peter’s arms banded around your middle tightly, burying his face in the curve of your neck. A shiver ran up your spine at the warmth of his breath against your shoulder, at the heat of his hand spread against your side.
He lingered in your embrace, sighing shakily against your skin as you reached up to run your finger through his hair. The curls were soft under your touch, and his arms tightened further around you as your fingernails just barely teased against his scalp. His body was so warm, and even the scent of booze couldn’t erase that feeling creeping up inside you.
You swallowed, forcing it down as you slowly pulled away from him again. “I’m sorry, Quill.”
He nodded again, his hands sliding around to briefly hold your waist. “I should…” he cleared his throat as he stood again on shaky legs. “I should go back to—”
“You can stay,” you said before reasonable thought could stop you, and you felt heat rise in your cheeks. “I mean… you can stay here tonight if you want… I kinda don’t trust you to make it back to your quarters without hurting yourself.”
You were such an asshole.
Peter stood still for a moment before he moved to rejoin you, and you shifted backward on the mattress to make room for him. Tugging the blankets back as he removed his boots, you found yourself averting you gaze as he sat beside you, despite there being no reason to. Quill didn’t seem to notice, and he pulled the blankets up over the both of you as he settled down against the pillows.
“Thank you, Y/N.”
You smiled softly in the darkness. “S’okay.”
You made move to roll over and face the window, but Peter wrapped his arms around you before you could. He tugged you towards him gently, tucking his face against your hair. He exhaled slowly, and your eyes widened as his hands spread over your back, one between your shoulder blades. You’d only worn a tank top and shorts to bed, and his palm made your bare skin tingle. Your hands curled against his stomach; your face buried in his chest.
Quill’s breathing steadied slowly, becoming deeper with each exhale. The hand resting on the small of your back curled the fabric of your tank top softly, and you swallowed. Still, despite the pounding of your heart against its cage and just how unaccustomed you were to sharing your space so intimately, you found the sound of his own heart and the rise and fall of his chest steadily lulling you to unconsciousness.
“I’ve missed you,” he murmured. He said it so quietly you almost thought you could have imagined it, if it wasn’t for the ever-so-slight tightening of his arms around you. You felt his lips brush gently over your forehead with his words, just below your hairline, in what could have just maybe been a kiss.
The briefest brush of his lips against your skin and you felt your heart stutter in your chest. And, without really thinking, you leaned up in his arms and, with a moment’s hesitation… pressed a kiss of your own to his throat.
You felt his adam’s apple bob under your lips before you pulled away. Peter shifted back; his face barely lit by the window behind you as he met your gaze. His eyes were dark in the muted light and they searched yours questioningly. You could hear your heartbeat in your ears; feel your blood throbbing through every part of you. His eyes were magnetic, the lines of his face stark within the shadows. His lips parted as though he might say something else, and your gaze flickered towards them for a moment.
And then, after what felt like a forever hanging between the two of you, ever so slowly, Peter brought his lips down to yours.
He kissed you slowly, searchingly, his lips so soft against yours that his kiss was barely more than a whisper against your lips. Your fingers curled in the front of his shirt as your disbelief melted away, his facial hair teasing at your chin. His hand ghosted up along the side of your throat, his fingers sliding gently against the side of your face to curl in your hair. His thumb brushed over your cheek as you separated long enough to breathe, and you shivered.
Quill’s palm was so warm, his chest firm under your own hands. The worn fabric of his shirt bunched under your fingers, riding up just slightly enough to expose the line of his hipbone. His hand left your hair to trail down over your bare arm, leaving goosebumps in its wake before claiming your hip.
His grip urged you even closer to him as he kissed you again, pressing your hips into his. His thigh tucked between your knees, and you whimpered into his mouth. Peter’s hand slipped around to the small of your back, his touch sliding under your shirt to tease the sensitive skin of your lower back.
You took his face in your hands, fingers sliding through his beard. Quill groaned headily in response.
He pulled away to press his forehead against yours, his breathing hard. “Fuck…”
His voice was like a shock of cold water down your spine, and you jerked away from him instinctively.
Peter hesitated, his brow furrowing. His hand returned to your waist, smoothing your tank top back down over your exposed skin.
“We…” you swallowed, forcing yourself to take a shaking breath to steady yourself. Your hands had slipped down to rest on his shoulders, and you grasped his shirt in your hands. “…We shouldn’t… Peter, we can’t do this.”
His eyes closed, and you reached up to touch your hand to his cheek again. Your fingers were shaking slightly.
“We can’t do this when you’re missing someone else.”
“Y/N…”
You shook your head, and you could hear budding, unshed tears in the back of your voice. “I can’t be a stand-in for Gamora, Peter.”
How long had it been since you’d said her name?
He nodded, his face pressed into your palm, and you wiped away a tear with your thumb as it caught the light from the window.
“I’m sorry, Peter.”
He shook his head, swallowing thickly. “No, I shouldn’t… I shouldn’t’ve…”
Quill moved to pull further away from you, to leave the warmth of the bed, and you grabbed his shoulder, urging him back to facing you.
“You don’t have to go, Peter.”
“I should—”
“Please, don’t.”
He hesitated, eyes on yours, before he nodded slowly. You pulled him back into your arms gently, wrapping them around him. His head moved to rest against your chest, and you stroked your fingers through his curls as he banded his arms around your waist. You could feel him shudder softly in your embrace, could feel tears dampen your shirt.
But ever so slowly, the two of you fell asleep.
