(Natasha sneaking out to meet Y/N)
Yelena: Where are you going now? It's one in the morning.
Natasha: Oh, Yelena, you are awake!! I thought you were asleep.
Yelena: Yes. I am wide awake. But you didn't answer my question.
Natasha: Umm... I am going to take a shower. Really, it's so hot in the house.
Yelena: Make sure you and your 'shower' don't forget to be quiet like the last time. Otherwise, Mom is not gonna go easy on your shower.

Letters to a Goodbye
Tumblr media
Part 2 of It's Okay. Let me Go
Summary: You gave Natasha an important mission to delivery the letters you've written before the time heist. These are those letters.
Warning: character death, guilt, good-bye letters, Natasha needs a hug in this one.
Word Count: 7.6
Natasha kept the letters with her till after the funeral. They felt heavy in her pocket but there was so much grief, it felt wrong to add more to it. But as the funeral died down, she was uncertain about the future, unsure of what the next move for the Avengers was. Wanda was the first letter. She found the Sokovian by the water’s edge, lost in her thoughts. The Black Widow walked over to her. “Hi,” she softly said, not wanting to disrupt the calm moment.
“Hi,” Wanda said, not looking away from the water. “I’m sorry about Y/n,” Natasha hated how much it hurt to hear your name. It felt like there was a snake wrapped around her heart and lungs, squeezing so tight. Wanda looked over her shoulder, her eyes were glossy with tears. “She was good.”
“Yeah, she was,” Natasha said, sitting down next to her. “I’m sorry about Vision.” Wanda looked down at her hands at the mention of his name. A few tears left her eyes. “I wish we could have done more.” Wanda nodded, wiping the tears away.
“Me too,” they sat in silence, watching the water and the wind blow through the trees. Finally, Wanda’s letter became too heavy. She took it out of her pocket.
“Here,” she said, handing it to her. “I don’t know if this letter will help or hurt more. But knowing my sister, it will probably help.” Wanda took it with shaky hands.
“She wrote me a letter,” Wanda said in disbelief. Natasha nodded.
“Her backup plan as she called it,” the Russian picked up a rock and skipped it across the water. “It seems like she knew she wasn’t going to come home.” Wanda smiled, tapping the letter against her hand.
“That sounds like her,” Natasha nodded.
“I have more letters to give out,” she said, standing up. “But I’m here for you, Wanda. You aren’t alone in this.” She walked back towards the cabin.
“You aren’t either,” Wanda’s voice stopped the Black Widow. “I know a thing or two about grieving a sibling.” Natasha sighed.
“I feel like I’ve grieved her too many times,” she admitted not turning around to face her. “When I defected to SHIELD I never thought I’d see her again, I didn’t want to see her. So, I grieved for a sister I never wanted. But then Yelena and I reunited with her and a piece of me that I didn’t know was missing was found. We were going to be a family again. But now,” Natasha looked back at the witch. “She won’t be coming back this time. I wish there was a way to tell her we did it. We won.” Wanda smiled.
“She knows. They both do,” Natasha nodded, looking back at the cabin. Yelena was sitting on the steps of Tony’s cabin, watching Morgan play with Nathaniel and Lila. The blonde had barely said two words to her or anyone. “She’ll come around, Nat. Just give her time.” The redhead nodded.
“If you need someone. I’m here.”
*
Wanda watched Natasha walk back to the cabin. Her shoulders were hunched in grief. She was holding onto so much guilt but Wanda didn’t want to go through her mind to see what happened, it wasn’t her place. She looked at the letter in her hand, she felt undeserving of one. Her fingers traced over her name. Letting out a shaky breath, she opened the envelope and unfolded the letter.
Wanda -
I wish I could offer my condolence in person but like we talked about all those years life is so uncertain. I am deeply sorry about Vision and I wish there was more we could have done. I remember you asking me if I have ever found love and I said no. But I was wrong. Indeed, I never had a chance to find love like you and Vision but I found love in other things; my sister, my parents, and how beautiful the world is when you are free to live it. I have to admit I envy the love you and Vision got to share but I am also grateful. I can’t put into words the pain you must be feeling.
You have been through a lot, Wanda Maximoff. You’ve lost and gained and lost again. No, I didn’t ask Natasha for your story, it would be wrong of me. That being said, it would be unfair of me to ask you to keep an eye on Natasha and Yelena when you’ve gone through so much. That shouldn’t stop you from asking them for help. Natasha can be a little rough around the edges and be compared to a feisty cat but her heart is good. Our mother told us to never let the Red Room take our hearts and she kept hers. Now Yelena is probably quiet right now, her emotions all over the place. But I call her little sun for a reason. She provides a light to the world that no one else can. So let them be there for you, little witch.
I wish we could have had that girl’s night we talked about when the world wasn’t ending but it had to be me. I think you’d understand that. We’ll see each other in the next life but I hope not too soon. Live for me. Live for Vision. But most importantly live for yourself.
Wanda refolded the letter and placed it against her chest. She cried. Life was so unfair.
*
Natasha walked over to Steve. He changed out of his suit and tie and into his Captain America suit. A briefcase was in one hand and Mjolnir was in the other as he talked with Sam. Steve was preparing to return the stones to their correct spot. Sam saw her approaching and smiled at her. “All set soldier?” Natasha asked. Steve nodded.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” Natasha smiled.
“Can I borrow you for a second?” She asked the super soldier. Sam patted Steve on the shoulder and walked over to Bucky. She found a picnic table, away from everyone, and she knew Steve was following her. She jumped on the top with her feet on the bench and Steve set everything down and sat next to her.
“Do you need a hug?” Steve asked. Natasha nodded, not trusting her voice. The super soldier put his arm around her shoulders and pulled her into him. Natasha let out a shaky breath, enjoying the warmth he gave off. Steve was always naturally warm, it had to do with the serum running through his veins.
“I don’t know how to do this,” she said. Her words were muffled as her face was buried in his chest. But she knew Steve could hear her. “She was my constant for 5 years. For 5 years, I knew she had my back.” Natasha ended the hug and put her arms on her lap, looking down. “How did you deal with it?” Steve looked at Bucky who was shaking his head at something Sam said, who was laughing. He must have told Bucky a joke.
“It was hard,” he finally said, looking back at Natasha. “But I had you and Sam. You helped a lot.” Natasha smiled. “You and Yelena will get through this. You guys are some of the strongest people I know,” Natasha cleared her throat. She pulled out his letter and handed it to him.
“She wrote you something,” Steve took it. “Before the time heist,” she stood up. “Be safe and come back to us.”
“I will.”
*
Natasha smiled, kissed his cheek, and walked over to the platform where Bruce was working. Steve was transported back to when they stood in front of Fury’s grave and she kissed him on the cheek, telling him to ask Sharon out. He looked at the letter in his hand, a little surprised you had the time to write to him. The super soldier opened the letter
Steve -
I knew you through stories before I met you. My father, the Red Guardian, told stories of how you and he fought. What he failed to tell me was that you were on ice long before he had a chance to meet you. But the man he made you seem like couldn’t compare to the man you are. You're courageous and you hold the weight of the world on your shoulders with a grace I envy. But I think that weight became too much.
I hate to admit but over the past 5 years, I grew to resent you and the other Avengers. You moved on, dealing with the guilt of the Battle of Wakanda in a way that was best for you. Because of that, you didn’t see the guilt that ate at Natasha. You didn’t see the late nights that nightmares kept her up or days I had to force her to eat something because she didn’t deserve food. I’m not telling you this to fill you with guilt. I envied you and the others because you could move on. In the end, you all came back together to rewrite a wrong.
The Avengers are a beautiful family. As families go they have their ups and downs, they fight and forgive, and love each other to the very end. I am glad my sister had you when they needed a family. Your family taught them how to love, laugh, smile, and be free.
You are a good man, Steve Rogers. I hope the best for you and the rest of the team. Thank them for me for being there for Natasha and Yelena when I wasn’t. Thank you.
Steve reread the letter and folded it, placing it in his pocket. He looked up and saw Natasha talking with Sam. He said something that made her laugh. It was good to see her laugh.
*
Natasha waited with bated breath as she listened to Burce's countdown to bringing Steve back. The doctor right before sending Steve back told her that he tried to bring you back, Vision too. Bruce said one and Steve appeared, a little disoriented when his helmet came off. Natasha noticed he had tears in his eyes. “I tried,” he said. “I tried.” Natasha knew what he meant.
*
Bucky was saying goodbye to T’Challa. Natasha was surprised to see his name among your letters but the man trained you at one point. He turned around and was surprised to see her. “Natalia,” he said as he walked over.
“Bucky, how are you?” The man looked tired.
“I’m ready for the fighting to be done,” Natasha nodded. She understood that feeling too well.
“I have something for you,” she handed him the letter. “Y/n wrote to you before -” she couldn’t bring herself to finish the sentence. Bucky took the letter with his flesh hand.
“Thank you,” he said. “I’m still getting my memories back, some things are clearer than others. But you sister I remember. She wouldn’t stop talking about you and Yelena,” Natasha fought tears that swelled in her eyes. “It was rather annoying at times.” He said it with a smile and it made Natasha laugh as she whipped away a few tears. “She helped me a lot during that time.”
“Yeah,” Natasha whispered. “I’ll see you around Bucky.”
*
“Nat,” the Black Widow stopped and faced him. “I’m here for you. Just let me know what I can do.” She didn’t respond but nodded her head. Buck found a quiet place to sit, away from prying eyes, and opened the envelope.
Bucky-
I bet you are surprised that I wrote you a letter but as you’ve come to know I do everything for a reason. I researched what HYDRA did to you and who you were before the man who trained me and so many other girls. I hope you don’t mind but I’m sorry that they put you through that. We had more in common than we thought. So I’m not sure how you remember me but I remember everything; every mission we went on, every minute we trained together, and every time they forced me to watch you get strapped to that chair.
On our last mission, we wrote a list together of things we wanted to do once we were free. Do you remember what we wrote? I found the list not too long ago. So now that you are free, finish this list for me.
Watch a sunset on a beach
Eat ice cream
Go dancing
See the Grand Canyon
Ride a rollercoaster
Go to the movies
Go on a date
Swim in a pool
Dance in the rain
Smile more
Be Happy
Enjoy the freedom, Bucky. You’ve earned it.
Bucky remembered that mission and the list you created. It was a stake and they had time as they sat and waited for the target. He was going to finish this list for you as you were a bright light during his time, it only seemed right.
*
Finally, Natasha sat down with a sigh. Her body ached down to her bones. She knew it was from everything that had happened. “Is this seat taken?” Clint asked, pointing to the empty spot next to her. Natasha shook her head. The archer sat down next to her, releasing a sigh of his own. “Where are you and Yelena headed to after this?” It took Natasha a second to reply.
“St. Petersburg,” she whispered. “We are going to visit Melina and Alexei,” She called them. It was a short call, a moment of peace amongst the chaos to tell them what happened.
“After that, you are welcome at the farm,” Clint said. “You aren’t alone in this.” It was the sentiment that everyone was giving her. You aren’t alone. I’m here for you. And Natasha was thankful for it but she didn’t want kind words, she just wanted her sister back.
“We may take you up on that,” she had to go find Yelena. “For you,” she handed him the letter. Clint hesitated but took it from her. “Safe travels back home. I’ll call you when we get to Melina’s.”
*
Clint grabbed Natasha’s hand and pulled her into a hug. The Black Widow tensed up not expecting the hug but soon relaxed in his arms. He felt her tears on his shirt. He understood. It could have been either of them, taking that leap to bring everyone back. But they were alive and they had to deal with you being gone.
He waited to read his letter, keeping it in his pocket on the flight home and the drive up to the house he hadn’t seen in 5 years. It was still there for family dinner and movie night, putting his kids to bed, and laying next to his wife. When Laura fell asleep, he crept down to the kitchen and sat at the dining room table with a bottle of scotch and the letter open.
Clint -
You were sent to kill my sister. You were given a mission to eliminate one of the Red Room’s best agents. But you didn’t. You ignored a direct order and gave her a chance to walk away. In doing so, you gave them freedom and I can’t thank you enough for that.
In those 5 years, you dealt with the Blip in a way you understood. You grieved for a family that was taken away from you, not by your choice. I understand that feeling far too well. You are not a monster or a bad person, who isn’t deserving of this chance to be with your family. You are human. Humans have complicated and messy emotions. So hug your family tight and tell them you love them.
I was in Budapest when you, Natasha, and Yelena destroyed half the city to try to kill Dreykov. As they and you know now it didn’t work. But I don’t want to dwell on that. I want to focus on the good and that is the unbreakable relationship you forged with my sisters. You put yourself in danger to help them defect to a better life. That takes a special (or stupid) type of person to do that.
You, your wife, and your kids invited Yelena and Natasha into your family. I saw how much it hurt Nat that she couldn’t bring you home like she was failing you. But you are home now. Continue to look after them for me. I wish we had more time to get to know each other and that I got to meet Nathaniel. You're a good brother to them, Clint. So thank you.
“Clint?” He looked up through his blurry eyes and saw Laura. She was wearing a robe and a small smile on her face. Without saying anything, she walked over to him and wrapped her arms around him. The archer rested his head on her chest and cried.
“I love you,” he whispered. “I love you so much.”
*
Pepper got a hotel room for those who didn’t feel like traveling, the woman was a saint. Natasha opened the door to her and Yelena’s room with food from a nearby burger place. Yelena was sitting on the balcony, her feet on the metal railing. She hadn’t said anything to Natasha but her eyes were red and blotchy from her tears. “I got your favorite,” she said, placing the food on the small table. “Well, I tried to get your favorite.” Natasha pulled out two burgers and a large fry. She got Yelena a chocolate and peanut butter milkshake. But the blonde made no move to grab the food. “Please eat,” Natasha said. “For me.” She added. The words left her mouth so effortlessly that they caused her throat to close up. When the guilt got too much, those 2 simple words got her to eat. But Yelena didn’t. She stood up and walked back into the hotel room. “Yelena,” She called after her. “Talk to me please.” Yelena stopped.
“What is there to say?” She asked. Her Russian accent laced the words. It only happened when she was drunk or she was emotional.
“Anything. Just don’t shut me out.” Yelena slowly turned around to face her.
“How did she die?” She asked. Natasha felt her heart skip. Deep down she knew Yelena had every right to know the truth but Natasha wasn’t ready for that conversation.
“What?”
“How. Did. Our sister. Die?” She asked, taking steps to close the distance between them. “I’ve tried to get someone to tell me. I asked Steve, Rhodney, Clint, and even Rocket but no one would tell me. So tell me,” Natasha couldn’t. How could she look in her baby sister’s eye and tell her she was going to lose someone she cared about no matter who came home from Vormir.
“She died to bring everyone back,” Yelena scuffed, throwing her arms to the side. The answer wasn’t what she was looking for. Natasha went to her nightstand and pulled out Yelena’s letter. “Here, she wrote this. It's for you.” Yelena took it. She stared at it, an unclear expression on her face. Soon it morphed into anger.
“I don’t want this,” she threw the letter to the ground. “I want her back.”
“I know-”
“You don’t know!” Yelena yelled. “You don’t know anything. I wanted more time with her. You got 5 extra years with her. That’s not fair!” Natasha let Yelena yell at her. She let her words bounce off of her. At least she was talking even though her words were laced with venom. “We should have gone back for her.” The sudden conversation switch gave Natasha whiplash.
“What are you talking about?” Natasha asked.
“We should have known that the Red Room was still active and that she was trapped. She would have come looking for us if she could have. But you didn’t care about her,” Yelena pointed at Natasha. “You didn’t want to face her and share what we found. You were being selfish. Why didn’t we go back for her?” Natasha was shocked into silence, barely recognizing the girl that stood in front of her. Yelena whipped the tears off her face and turned to leave the room. She opened the door, almost running into Maria as she stormed past. Natasha sat on the food of her bed, hands covering her face. She knew better than to now follow Yelena. The blonde needed to cool down. But the words thrown at her didn’t help the guilt already eating at Natasha.
“I heard yelling and I wanted to see if everything was okay,” Maria said, walking into their room. Natasha didn’t look up. “I can see that it isn’t,” she laughed bitterly, uncovering her face. “Do you need a hug, to talk, or a drink?”
“A drink. I need a drink.”
*
When Natasha stumbled into her hotel room after a few too many drinks with Maria, she was greeted with darkness. But she did see Yelena’s sleeping form in bed and the letter was picked up. The Black Widow slipped underneath the covers and sleep welcomed her.
*
It was a strange Deja Vu moment as Natasha walked up to the farmhouse with Yelena next to her. The last time she was here, her family was whole, broken but whole as they tried to come up with a plan to take down the Red Room. Every time you asked her to visit Melina, Natasha gave an excuse. Maybe she should have joined you. The door opened and Melina and Alexei walked out. Natasha heard Yelena let out a shaky breath and quickened her steps to reach the older Russian. Melina opened her arms to engulf the blonde. Natasha slowed down to give the two some space. Being here will be good, she thought. Yelena ended the hug and walked over to Alexei. The Russian super soldier was unsure of himself but Yelena hugged him and he hugged her back. It was a quick hug but Natasha saw Yelena nod at something Alexei said and walk into the house. Natasha continued walking and only stopped when Melina stood in front of her. “Natasha.”
“Hi mama,” she wasn’t expecting the older Black Widow to give her a quick hug.
“You look tired,” Melina said, taking a step back to look at her.
“I’m hungover.”
“Ah,” she smiled. “That would do it. Come, I’ve made food and I can get you something for that hangover.” They walked back to the house in silence. Natasha had three more letters; one for Melina, one for Alexei, and then her’s. She had no idea how you wrote all of these in a short amount of time. Alexei greeted her with a smile.
“Natalie,” he said. “I’m sorry about Y/n.” She wondered how long it was going to be until hearing your name stopped hurting.
“She would be glad it worked and you came back to annoy us with stories of your glory days.” Natasha teased. Alexei laughed and followed her into the house. “Where is Yelena?”
“She asked me where Y/n’s room was,” he said. “I wasn’t if it changed.”
“It didn’t,” Melina assured him but Natasha wasn’t listening. She walked over to the dining room table and it was covered with photos of you and Natasha assumed were other Widows. She recognized one and picked up the photo of you and Soyna with baby pigs, warm smiles on both of your faces. “Some of the Widows want to have a small service for her,” Melina said, standing next to her. “They asked me to get a few things out. I can put it away.”
“No,” Natasha said, putting the picture down. “You can keep it out.” She forgot that part of your life as it seemed like a lifetime ago. While she and Yelena were on the run from the government, you were cleaning up the mess the Red Room made. A mess that shouldn’t have happened if Natasha just went back for you. Maybe Yelena was right. “How is that going?” She asked, following Melina into the kitchen. Melina directed her to sit at a small table. She did and watched the odd Russian couple interact with one another. Alexei may have been gone for 5 years but they moved smoothly in the kitchen. He poured bowls of soup from a pot while Melina made a drink. He set one bowl down in front of Natasha and went to take the other to Yelena.
“We made progress during those 5 years a lot of the Widows were Blipped,” Melina put a glass on the table and sat down with a sigh. “Which is still an awful name.” Natasha smiled, taking a spoonful of the soup. It was good. It provided her with the warmth that she was missing. The drink on the other hand made her gag.
“Did you put vodka in this?” She asked.
“What do you Americans say, ‘hair of the dog?” Natasha rolled her eyes. “But with everyone being back, there is still work that needs to be done.”
“We or I can help,” it was the least she could do and she wasn’t sure what Yelena wanted.
“Soyna is handling it for now,” Melina put her hand over Natasha. “How are you doing?” Natasha wasn’t sure. She wanted to wake up and for this to be a horrible dream.
“I don’t know,” she said honestly.
“Well, you can stay here as long as you need to figure it out,” Melina said. “They may be some extra clothes that she left here but we can go into the city to get you stuff.” Nothing survived the compound being attacked.
“Thank you,” Alexei came back without the bowl in his hand.
“Yelena asked me to tell you she wants to see you. The room is down the hall and to the right,” Natasha went without another word. She found her sister, sitting on the floor with her back against the bed. Without saying a word, Natasha sat down next to her. In her hands was a photo strip that was ripped on one edge.
“I miss her,” Yelena whispered, putting her head on Natasha’s shoulder.
“Yeah, so do I.”
*
Melina told Natasha that Alexei liked to go fishing when she asked where the super soldier was. There was a creek that flowed on the edge of the property. So Natasha went to find him. It wasn’t hard but the Black Widow was surprised by how peaceful it was and how quiet Alexei was. “Come join me, Natalia,” he said, not taking his eyes off the water. Natasha sat on a rock next to him. “When your sister was here and not freeing Widows, I tried to get her to come fishing with me,” he chuckled. “She wasn’t happy with the early wake-up calls but I told her it was good for her. I probably told her a cool Red Guardian story.”
“Super cool,” Natasha teased. The man smiled.
“I think I was trying to make it up to her,” he said. “I wasn’t the father you girls deserved.” Natasha looked away from him and stared out at the water.
“I remember that day so clearly,” she finally said. “For a second, I thought you’d listen to her. You were going to take Yelena and me back to Ohio,” she looked back at him. “But you didn’t.”
“I didn’t,” he softly said. He brought the line back in and cast it out.
“Do you regret it?” He didn’t respond right away, focused on letting more lines out.
“I don’t know,” Natasha knew it was a complicated question. “I mean I wish you girls didn’t have to go through that but would you and Yelena have become Avengers if I disobeyed an order?” He asked. She wasn’t sure. One of the many possibilities on how her fate could have been different. Natasha took out his letter and handed it to him.
“She wrote you something,” she stood up, whipping the dirt off her pants. “Maybe I’ll join you out here tomorrow.” Alexei nodded, looking down at the letter in his hands. Natasha smiled, leaving the super soldier alone.
*
Dad-
I remember that day in Cuba so vividly. I had that gun pointed at you and I was ready to fight you and every guard there, even when I knew I didn’t stand a chance. So I pleaded with you to take Yelena and Natasha back home and take me instead. But you didn’t. It made me question if you ever truly cared about us. The first few days I was so angry with you. I hated you. For 3 years you were my dad and I was your daughter. Was it just a mission to you? Did you ever care?
I think it was both. You were following orders but there were moments when I think you cared about us. Remember when a girl in my class said no when I asked her to go to a dance? You asked me if you wanted to go threaten her. Or when some neighborhood kids were picking on Yelena you taught her to stand up for herself. She gave the kid a black eye and as Melina punished her you gave her a candy bar. Natasha wanted to play on the baseball team instead of softball and you stayed up with her to teach her how to catch a baseball and throw one. The mission didn’t require you to do those things. You wanted to be somebody to someone; someone important. You choose Dreykov when to us you were already the most important person. Mission or not, you are our father.
If you are writing this then our plan worked and I didn’t come home but that’s okay. I got to experience the father you could be for 2 years now it's Natasha and Yelena’s turn. Take them to your fishing spot, teach them how to help Melina with the pigs, tell them stories about the birds that visit the farm, and most importantly love them because I know you do.
Also, I fought with Captain America so suck on that!
Alexei laughed, shaking his head. Of course, you would end a goodbye letter in a way to make him laugh. He folded the letter and tapped it against his hand. Cuba will always haunt him. He could see the fear in your eyes and your tears as you pleaded with him to disobey Dreykov. Alexei sighed and looked toward the way Natasha walked. He was going to make it right and be the father they needed.
*
After dinner, Natasha found Melina in her workshop creating more of the Red Dust. “I have something for you,” Natasha said. Melina put the test tubes down and looked at her. The letter was already in Natasha’s hand.
“Alexei told me about his letter,” she handed Melina the letter. “Have you read yours?” The redhead shook her head.
“If I read it then it cements that she's not coming back,” she said. “That she’s gone.” Melina put the letter down on her workbench.
“Come sit,” Natasha sighed, sitting down next to Melina. “There is a Hebrew poem about death and in that poem, there is a line, ‘As long as we live, they will live, for they are now part of us, as we remember them.’ She may have died but she isn’t gone. She’s here,” she pointed to Natasha’s head. “And here.” She pointed to her heart.
“It’s the same,” Melina nodded, whipping away a few tears. Natasha didn’t realize she was crying.
“No, it’s not but it’s our new normal.”
*
Natasha stayed with Melina as she worked. Finally, the redhead retired to her room. Melina sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. She went through the Red Room 3 times before any of her children were born. They taught her how to control her emotions but she felt so out of control right now. When Natasha called her and told her of your passing and that she and Yelena were headed to St. Petersburg when they had a moment, all Melina could say was ‘okay’. But deep down her heart was aching. It felt unfair how little time you had. She picked up the letter, carefully opened the envelope, and unfolded the paper.
Mama-
So many years ago you told us to not let them take our hearts. That simple saying kept me alive, it gave me the strength to continue and made me a better person. It made me realize that you kept yours. I remember the look in your eyes when you said, ‘I’m sorry’ to us when Alexei told us we were leaving. You didn’t want to leave either. I wonder what our life would be like if we got to stay in Ohio. Would I go to college? Would Natasha play sports in high school? Would we interrogate Yelena’s prom date and tell them to have her home by 10? These questions kept me up at night and they would hurt.
I’m grateful for the few extra years we had together; late nights in your lab working in silence, cooking dinner for the few Widows that were living with us and helping you take care of the pigs. I wish we had more of those memories but I cherish that.
Do me a favor. Step out of your lab and live. Smile. Be happy. Live your life and breakthrough that conditioning they put you through. It will be hard and painful and scary but it will be worth it. Allow yourself to smile and laugh at Alexei. Cry over stupid rom-com movies. Live for me, mama. I’ll miss you.
Melina dropped the letter down to her desk. She felt the tears form in her eyes. Her throat burned. She couldn’t remember the last time she cried. She covered her mouth and cried.
*
It was now or never. Natasha paced back and forth in her room with the letter resting on her bed. She couldn’t bring herself to read it. Frustrated, she put the letter on the nightstand, slammed the drawer shut, and climbed into bed.
*
Screaming woke Yelena up. She jumped out of bed and ran to the door. The scream was from Natasha’s room. She opened the door, almost ripping it off the hinges, and saw Natasha thrashing under the covers. Yelena ran to her side. “Natasha,” she said. “Natasha, wake up. It’s just a nightmare. You're safe.” Her sister woke up with a gasp, eyes frantically darting around the room. “Hey,” Yelena sat on her bed, grabbing onto her face. “You’re okay. I’m here. It’s okay.” She heard Alexei and Melina enter the room but she ignored them. The last time she saw Natasha this broken was after the battle against Thanos at the compound when she learned of your death. Natasha choked on a sob and pulled her into a hug.
“I’m sorry,” she said. It was hard to hear over her tears. “It should have been me,” Yelena pulled away, still keeping her hands on Natasha’s arms.
“What are you talking about?” She took a few breaths to calm herself down.
“We came up with a plan,” Melina sat at the edge of the bed and Alexei took a seat in the corner. “It involved all of us separating into groups and going back in time to get the infinity stones from different parts of the pass,” Yelena understood every other word Natasha just said. Bruce tried to explain it to her when she asked how they did it. “Clint, Y/n, and I went to Vormir,” she stopped, shaking her head. “I should have seen it but I didn’t, not like she did. When we got there, the guardian greeted us. He said -” her voice cracked. “He said that the 2 of us were going to get the stone but one of us was going to lose everything; in every listing exchange. A soul for a soul,” Natasha looked down at her lap. “She hit Clint with her Widow Bites and ran for the cliff. I tackled her but she flipped me over. She jumped but I jumped after her,” Yelena’s hands squeezed Natasha’s arms. “I grabbed her hand and attached myself to the cliff with a grappling hook.” Natasha looked up at her sister. “I pleaded with her to not do it but she kicked the wall and slipped out of hand.” The room was stunned into a heavy silence. Yelena looked at Alexei and Melina, their faces were neutral but their eyes portrayed their true feelings. They didn’t know either. “It should have been me,” she said again.
“No,” Yelena said. “No, don’t say that. How could you say that?” She asked, pushing Natasha on the shoulder.
“It’s true! You said you wanted more time with her. We just got her back and now she’s gone because I-” her voice cracked. “I didn’t save her again.”
“Natasha,” Melina said. “Your sister was as stubborn as you.” Yelena hated the usage of ‘was’. “There was no stopping her.” The redhead pushed the palm of her hands against her eyes.
“I’m sorry. I’m so fucking sorry,” Yelena wasn’t sure how to help her. She’s never seen her this distraught.
“Sometimes in our lives, we’ll have pain and sorrow,” Yelena whispered. “But if we are wise we know that there’s always tomorrow. So lean on me when you’re not strong and I’ll be your friend. I’ll help you carry on,” she remembered the phrase you used to say to them when life became too hard, nightmares, fights, and when they were being transported to the Red Room. It felt wrong on her lips but Yelena knew her sister needed it. Her shoulders relaxed at the familiar phrase. “I miss her, I do, and I love her. But I need you. I don’t want to choose between losing you or her. I just-” Yelena was struggling to find her words. “I need you. You're my sister, my best friend.” Natasha nodded, pulling Yelena into a hug.
“I’m here,” she said. Yelena felt Natasha’s heart beating.
“We are all here,” Alexei said. “Family, right?”
“A pretty dysfunctional one,” Natasha mumbled. Yelena laughed, ending the hug and looking at Melina and Alexei. This was the reason you gave up your life for these moments. Yelena was still so angry but these moments made it feel worth it.
*
Yelena waited until Natasha fell asleep and she snuck back into her room. With a sigh, she sat down on her bed and pulled out the letter from underneath her pillow. She ran her thumb over her name and finally opened it. When she opened the envelope, she was surprised to find a sticky note instead of a piece of paper. On the sticky note, a micro SD card was taped onto it, and ‘Throw on the ground’ was written on it. Her hands shook as she took off the card and threw it on the ground. As it landed, a blue hologram version of you appeared. Yelena’s heart skipped and her stomach dropped. You were wearing your tactical suit.
“Is this recording?” You asked, looking up.
“Yes, Miss. Y/n,” the AI answered. You laughed. God, Yelena missed it.
“Sorry FRIDAY,” you smiled. “This is my first hologram.” You looked at Yelena and the air left her lungs. My malen'koye solnyshko (little sun),” she never thought she would hear you say that name. You didn’t say anything but stared ahead. “You are the first letter I’ve written because there is so much I want to say but I don’t know where to start,” you let out a shaky breath. “I am so proud of you. Over the past few years, I looked up all the different missions you and Nat did with SHIELD and the Avengers and you did amazing things. You saved so many people and I am speechless about the woman you’ve become. You aren’t that scared little girl that came running to me when it thundered,” Yelena was still scared of them. “You are brave, wise, smart, and beautiful. You-” Your voice cracked. “Wanda said to me that you wished we had more time together and so do I but it's,” you sighed. Yelena could see the tears running down your cheeks and she knew her face mirrored you. “I want to say it’s okay but we both know it’s not. The world can be a cruel place full of darkness and loss and death and you begin to wonder if what we do is worth it. Because as soon as we remove one man from power another will take its place and the cycle will continue.” You sighed, running your hands through your hair.
“We’ve seen that darkness. You, Natasha, and I were subjected to it and forced to be a part of it. So yes, the world is dark but it’s also beautiful. I got to see a small glimpse of the life you and Natasha created. I watched the sun rise and fall on the compound and count the stars. There are so many stars in the sky I must have been too busy to look up.
“And no your back and I’m gone. My malen'koye solnyshko (little sun). You bring so much light into this beautiful world. Please don’t let my death darken it,” you smiled, wiping away your tears. “Also, be nice to Natasha this wasn’t her fault and I know she’s blaming herself. You guys are going to be just fine. Do you know why?”
“Why?” Yelena found herself asking.
“Because my sisters are the strongest in the world,” you mimicked Alexei’s accent which caused Yelena to laugh. “You're my hero Yelena. Thank you for allowing me to be your sister. I love you.” The hologram disappeared. Her room was quiet besides the pounding of her heart.
“You are my hero, sestra,” Yelena whispered. “You are mine.
*
Natasha woke up and saw Yelena sleeping next to her. Her cheeks had tear stains. She slowly sat up but the movement caused Yelena to groan, her eyes fluttering open. “Go back to sleep,” she whispered. Yelena nodded, her eyes already closed. Natasha got out of bed and took the envelope out of the nightstand. On quiet feet, she ventured out of the house. She sat on the grass and opened the envelope. She pulled out a sticky note with a micro SD card and wrote on it, ‘Throw on the ground.’ Confused, Natasha threw the card on the grass and a blue hologram appeared. It was you. The day of the time heist. “You son of a bitch,” Natasha gasped.
“Natasha,” you smiled. “I’m sorry that this has happened. I think the universe likes to keep you and me and Yelena apart. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t together or a family.” You sighed, rubbing the back of your head. “I’m not sure what words to say to make this better. Maybe I’m not supposed to make it better, it’s going to be your new normal,” you threw your hands to the side. “I don’t know what to say to you, Nat. I want to give you some sisterly advice or thank you for those 5 years we had together or how much you mean to me as a sister but I think you know that, right?” Your voice was so soft and quiet. “I know you know. I’d do anything for you and Yelena even if a certain redhead reminded me that we weren't,” you teased. Natasha rolled her eyes. “I guess I’ll give you this. No more guilt, okay? And I know I saw that like it was the easiest thing in the world and I know it isn’t. But everything that has happened to me and every girl that was part of the Red Room was not your fault. One person can not save the world, that’s too much pressure.
“I won’t keep this long because I don’t want this to be a goodbye letter. So get out from behind your desk. Find love. Get married. Buy a house with a white picnic fence and a big yard for your dog and kids. Live. Because life,” your hologram looked over your shoulder. Natasha remembered you had a window in your room, you must have looked at it but your hologram turned to look at the Russian sunset. “Is beautiful.” Natasha felt tears run down her cheeks. “Don’t cry for me. I’ll be with you always.”
Natasha looked over her shoulder to see Yelena walking over to her with a blanket over her shoulders. She smiled at the hologram version of you as it disappeared. She sat down next to Natasha, putting the blanket over her shoulders. The sun was slowly rising into the sky, indicating a new day. For the first time in a long time, Natasha took a deep breath in and slowly let it out and her guilt wasn’t as crushing. It would take time for the hurt to ease but she felt free.
*
You watched your sister look towards the Russian sunrise. With a smile, you walked over to Natasha and sat down next to her. You loved the color of the sky in the morning. ‘Come on, kid,’ you turned around to see Tony. ‘We can’t stay.’ You looked back at your sisters.
‘I think I’ll stay,’ you said. ‘I’d like to see where life takes them.’
Fin.

Summary: After a family day out, the girls, Yelena and Natasha are fast asleep in the back and just for a moment, everything seems perfectly normal.
Tiny Angst | Fluff | No Warnings | 0.9K |
AC: My first Melina request!!! I took a little spin on this; I hope that’s okay! Reader is Yelena and Natasha’s “parents”. No hate to Alexei, I love him lmao. I hope you enjoy this x
Tumblr media
A family outing with your little family wasn't at all a part of the mission you and Melina were directed to do but it did fall under the category of making the "pretend family" as Dreykov could call it, look real. You and Melina decided to take the girls to the Cedar Point Amusement Park for the day. Of course, at first, Natasha, the eldest wasn't too interested in the idea but Yelena couldn't hide her excitement. She requested her song, American Pie about five times before Melina had to convince her to listen to the radio for a little while.
Once arriving at the theme park, you instantly saw the hidden excitement in Natasha's eyes as she looked up at one of the rollercoasters. A soft smile tugged at your lips before you felt Yelena excitedly pull at your jacket, "Come on Ma!" she smiled widely, showing you exactly how many of her adult teeth were beginning to come through.
"Natasha are you ready?" you asked, looking at the young teen while Melina grabbed the backpacks out of the car.
"Yeah, let's go" Natasha slightly rolled her eyes to prove to you and Melina that just going on a family outing wasn't going to change what she already knew.
Given Yelena was only 6 years old, everything was new and exciting to her. Her jaw dropped at each new ride her eyes locked onto, at least for her this was a real and her little mind never gave it a second thought unlike Natasha who struggled to allow herself to enjoy days like these.
"Yelena, no running off please!" Melina reminded the young girl who ran ahead, stopping at Melina's words. "But mom! I don't want to miss the good rides!" She turned on her heels, causing both you and Melina to chuckle. "You don't love, the park doesn't close until night" you smiled softly. Melina took a hold of Yelena's small hand and walked ahead, giving you a chance to talk to Natasha.
"You know, today isn't about making this look real" you spoke as you walked alongside the teen with blue hair. "You say that but everything we do is too make us look like we're a real family and one day, I'll have to go back. What happens to Yelena when the time comes?" Natasha snapped as she looked up at you.
Mission or not, it broke your heart to hear those words come from her mouth. Three years doesn't seem like a long time but within the time of being together as a four, your heart grew to love the girls as if they were your own, you see them as your own and nothing would ever change that, you just wish Natasha would see that.
"Things will be different, I promise" you replied, lying to her and you hated yourself for it.
"How?" Natasha asked with the tiniest hint of hope in her voice.
"Because, neither Melina or I will let anything happen you girls and I know you're having a hard time trying to see that, but I love you, Natasha. You're my daughter and no mission will change that"
"But you can't promise that when I go back, that things will be okay"
"I can and I am. Melina is a lot closer to Dreykov than I am, if you think she'll let him hurt you or Yelena in anyway, you don't know Melina well enough" you replied, seeing your words put the teen at ease. She smiled, "I love you too" Her words came to you in an almost whisper, but they warmed your heart.
----
After hours of going on ride after ride, snack after snack and of course some shopping, it was time to head home. Yelena was coming off a sugar high and both you and Melina could tell how tired the girls were. After your talk with Nat, she let her guard down a little and allowed herself to enjoy the day as a normal 11-year-old.
"Thank you for taking us" Nat smiled at both you and Melina as you all gathered at the car.
"You're very welcome girls" Melina smiled, helping Yelena into her seat. You smiled back at Natasha, for the first time in a while she looked genuinely happy.
The car ride home was rather quiet, everybody was too tired and achy to want much of a conversation but of course, Yelena asked if Mac n Cheese was on the menu for tonight's dinner. "I'm sure we can cook some up when we're home" you replied, looking at the 6-year-old through the review mirror.
The radio played softly as Melina drove you all home, your hand resting gently in her free hand, her thumb stroking your knuckles with love as you watched passing vehicles through the window. "They both had a lot of fun today" Melina whispered when she saw both girls in the backseat asleep. "Natasha seemed to really enjoy herself as well" she added.
"I'm really proud of her today and letting herself enjoy the day" you replied, looking over at Melina as she pulled up in the drive away. "Do we have to move them?" you asked in a whisper, looking over your shoulder.
"Let's just do another block and see if they wake up, if not, we'll park in the garage and wake them when dinner is ready" Melina suggested, placing a soft kiss on your cheek. Moments like these made you both forget the meaning of everything, the red room, the mission, the widow program and most importantly, Dreykov. It was just you, your wife and the two young and beautiful girls you shared with her and as Melina took her time, driving another block with her free hand intertwined with yours, you forever wished things would never change.

"You may retire to your recess."
Without waiting for any further response from teacher Maria, I took my best friend's hand and my glass of cold coffee and we left the room.
Since we arrived at Italian class in the middle of the day, Daniela repeatedly insisted that at recess time, I had to accompany her to the school cafeteria, since she had not had breakfast.
The Italian teacher was very strict with schedules, so we knew we only had fifteen minutes to get some food (and a candy for me) and another fifteen minutes to eat in peace.
"Do you want to go to the bathroom first?" asked Daniela stopping in front of the bathroom door as I rearranged my top.
"Dani, we don't even have time to eat" we both laughed as I took her hand and dragged her to the main hallway that connected the five buildings on the inside. "Besides, if we don't go right now and we go in the middle of class, the teacher can't ask us any of the vocabulary questions."
"Agh, I know. The lady thinks for some strange reason, we had ALL weekend to study irregular verbs, doesn't she know that her subject is a complementary to my college degree?" we both laughed.
"She's crazy, did you see how she looked at me when I answered 'io vorrei' wrong?"
Before Daniela could answer me, next to her, a woman passed by, with a fair complexion, a big but pretty nose, and beautiful brown hair.
I could see her moving her head from side to side. She was looking for something.
Many people would say it was 'chivalry', my friends (Daniela) that I'm a fucking flirt, but I would say, it was both and neither.
I quickly let go of Daniela's arm, turned and reached for the poor woman.
"Hi, hey, do you need help?"
My stomach turned when I saw her eyes. Oh, my mother. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever met.
"Hi, excuse me, do any of you know how to get to the literary studies department?"
That's when I was grateful for studying 'literature' in college. "Oh sure, if you want we can take you there."
I couldn't see her, but I could even notice Daniela's panicked look behind my back.
"Oh, no need, I just don't know which building it's in" commented the woman with a nervous chuckle as she crumpled a piece of paper in her hands.
"We have no problem accompanying you. These hallways can be confusing" The woman gave me a charming smile, to which I responded and we both set out to walk from building 'D' to 'A'. "By the way, my name is Y/N and this is my friend Daniela."
For the first time, the woman looked directly at my friend and my friend just said a small 'hello' and raised her hand in greeting.
"Nice to meet you, my name is Melina."
"Do you study here, Melina?"
Damn, saying her name was completely addictive.
"Not really. Do you?"
"Yes, we are in our third semester of college."
"Third semester, they look so young" she commented raising an eyebrow.
"Well, thank you, but, that doesn't take my years off."
We both laughed while Daniela just followed us without mentioning anything.
After a few minutes, we arrived at the site, where we were quickly greeted by Sabrina, the department secretary.
"Hi Sabrina, how are you?" opened the door Daniela and let us in, as she waved.
"Hi girls, well thank you, how about you?"
"Well, thank you very much for asking."
"Melina, this is Sabrina, the secretary of the study department."
"You are Melina Vostokoff?"
"That's right."
"Oh, Mr. Hudson is busy, but he'll be able to see you in a few minutes, would you like some coffee or something?"
"coffee be excellent" before she sat down in the waiting room, she put down her bag and looked at me and my friend. "Do you have classes to go to?"
"Yes…" Dani spoke
"No," I said.
She looked at us confused.
"Well, actually, we do have classes, but, it's nothing major."
"You know what" Daniela interrupted me "Can we have a few minutes?" she asked Melina "We want to go to the bathroom."
"I don't want to."
Daniela pinched me causing me to gasp.
"If you want."
She took my hand and dragged me to the bathrooms.
"Look, Y/N I don't know what you're up to and if you want to continue being a flirty fucking whore, but, we absolutely cannot skip Italian class, just because you want to stick your tongue down that woman's throat."
"Daniela, don't be a spoilsport, what can happen if we don't show up for the second half?"
"I don't know and I don't even want to find out. Let's go," she tried to grab my arm and pull me, but I held on to the door frame.
"I'm not leaving."
"Y/N, please let's go."
"No Daniela, if you want to go, go ahead, but I'm not leaving."
Daniela just frowned, pursed her lips, looked me up and down as her face turned red as a tomato. She was furious. But she left.
I walked over to the sink, drank some water and combed my hair and checked my makeup and clothes and walked out of the bathroom.
I entered the study department again and found a Melina sipping coffee, while on the coffee table, there was another coffee and multiple cookies.
"Oh, I asked Sabrina for another coffee, in case you'd like some."
"Thank you."
I sat down and quickly took a sip.
"Where is your friend?"
"She had to go."
We were both silent for a while, until a doubt came to me.
"May I know what you're going to talk to Mr. Hudson for?"
"I was hired to teach the Russian literature class."
Several of my friends were in French, Spanish, Latin American and other literature classes. But none of them had gotten into Russian, no one was interested.
"Oh, it sounds very interesting."
"Are you going into the classroom?"
"Of course. My favorite author is Russian"
"Really, who is it?"
"Vladimir Lenin"
"Excuse me, Mrs. Vostokoff," Sabrina interrupted us. "Mr. Hudson is ready to receive you."
"Oh thank you" she gathered her belongings and before walking to Professor Hudson's office, she turned to see me "Thank you so much for helping me."
"You're welcome, Mrs. Vostokoff," I winked at her, eliciting a chuckle.
She walked a few steps, so I turned to go back to my classroom, but her voice stopped me.
"Oh, by the way, Lenin was a politician. Not a writer."
———————————————————————————
"
Well boys, that concludes today's class."
As I watched all my classmates gather their things and head out the door. I grabbed my notebook, pen and cell phone and stuffed it in my bag, but I stood watching as Melina began to close her laptop.
"Do you need anything T/N?"
"I wanted to ask if…can I buy you breakfast?"
She stopped putting her things away and looked me straight in the eye.
"Invite me, where to?"
"I know a coffee shop that's near here."
"Good" She finished putting her things away and put on her brown trench coat, it matched his eyes. Carefully, he rested her right hand on my left cheek and stroked my cheekbone with her thumb. "How many times have I told you to stop calling me 'you'?"
———————————————————————————
I could confirm that I was fully in love with Melina Vostokoff.
For years I found it disgusting to eat in the company of someone outside my family circle. Because even when I was across the table, I could hear people chewing and swallowing; some even do it with their mouths open. It made me very, very disgusted.
But to see the Russian's white cheeks puffy from chewing her waffles, while her right hand tried to hide her mouth. Her eyes were on mine and her cheeks showed the shadow of a smile.
It was completely adorable.
"Can I tell you something?" asked Melina.
Her voice snapped me out of my trance and forced me to continue eating.
"Sure" I took a sip of my coffee.
"I think it was a bad idea for you to stick my subject into your schedule."
I choked on my coffee, sending me into a coughing fit. She quickly patted my back, causing my cheeks to redden.
"Why do you say that?"
"Are you kidding Y/N?" she guffawed "You suck at remembering anything about Russian literature. I bet you don't even remember one Russian author."
I could not help but laugh. She knew me.
"You're right, I suck."
"So… why are you taking the class?"
"Would you believe me if I told you I was getting into the class…for you?"
She stopped cutting her waffle and looked at me with wide eyes.
"Me?"
"Forgive me, but, you are too beautiful to see from afar."
Before she could answer me, her cell phone started ringing.
She pulled it out and quickly answered.
"Hey honey, is everything okay?" shit, she had a husband, why didn't I think of that great possibility, a woman like her who was single? impossible. "Hey, it's okay, when I get home I'll work it out. I promise. I love you" she hung up.
"Forgive me, I shouldn't have told you what I said. I don't want to interfere in your marriage…" I began to ramble as I tried to put the silverware down on the plate. My hands were shaking, but, she took one between hers.
"Marriage?"
"Ahh, it's not…" point to her cell phone on the table with my eyes.
"She was my oldest daughter, Natasha."
———————————————————————————
I knocked on the door three times, and as I listened to the footsteps approaching the door, I arranged my dress and the bouquet of flowers in my hand.
The door opened with a crash.
"Y/N!"
"Yelena"
The little girl jumped into my arms, and even with my hands fully occupied, I was able to carry her.
"Are you coming to see mom?"
"Don't tell your mom, but I'm coming to see you, best friend."
With my index finger, I tapped her nose, causing her to wrinkle it.
"I promise."
"Hello, pretty girl."
Melina came downstairs wearing a white knit sweater I had given her last Christmas and some pants I had helped her buy. They hugged her hips in a phenomenal way. Her butt looked so sexy with them on.
"How are you?" I asked as I stole a kiss . "Iugh" Yelena made noise as if she was going to throw up. Causing me to let go of Melina and tickle the blonde girl.
"Come on little girl, I brought gifts for you and your sister."
"YEI, Nattie, Y/N brought gifts!"
The teenager's footsteps came down to us as her sister began to unwrap her new barbie.
"Hello Y/N"
"Hello red"
Red was my nickname for her. She would only let me call her that.
"What did you bring?"
"I figured you'd like a new skateboard…"
"Are you kidding!"
"Of course not" from the bag I pulled out Natasha's new skateboard, causing the little girl to let out a small squeal.
"Ah Y/N, thank you so much!" She grabbed the skateboard to hug me. I hugged her back. "I love you so much!"
"Did you already say thank you, Yelena?" asked Melina as she did her mom pose. Putting her hands on her waist.
"Thank you so much, Y/N" she also ran to hug me. "I love you."
"I love you too, love bugs…but go play, seize the day."
I didn't have to say it twice for them to run away.
"You didn't have to give them anything," Melina said.
"I know, but, I didn't want to leave my favorite girls without a gift."
"So your favorite girls, huh?"
"Hey, don't be jealous. You're my special girl too" I gave her the bouquet of roses and sunflowers I had bought especially for her.
I saw how her eyes sparkled and she brought her face close to smell the flowers.
"Have I told you that I love you?"
"Did I tell you?"
"Not that I remember," she joked.
"I love you, then."
"I love you so much more."

Type: Fluff
Warning: me being really bad for a first time like always
word count: 3298
Here is a link to the orignal song if you want (warning it's a french song)
--------
Natasha was sitting on your bed; she was looking at you while you finished your make-up. Today was Yelena's birthday, and Melina decided to do something special (just a party with the people she knows). A song was playing in the background, and she let herself get lost in her mind when she listened to the lyrics.

To find the love now, it's the grail.
To find the love now, it's the grail.
A little bit of drama red on your lips

"Hey Nat, did you hear me?" You asked, and she came out of her trance just to look at you.
"Excuse me. What did you say?" She asked shyly, and you smiled at her.
"Do you think this lipstick is good?" you asked again, and she nodded. Nat brought you this just two days prior because it reminded her of you. "Are you sure because I don't want to look bad in front of your mom?"
"Oh come on, you know she loves you, maybe even more than me." She joked, and you kissed her before grabbing your purse and your present for her sister and leaving the house.
In the car, Natasha was playing the same song, and while you drove, she was focused on two things: you and how this song reminded her of you two.
~~
We're not obligated to be enamoured to love each other.
The wedding is to please the motha.
The wedding is to please the motha.
The wedding is to please the motha.
But I'll even ask you if you want to marry me
~~
Your relationship was not always so beautiful. When you met her, it was when Fury asked you to team up with her and Clint a few months after she joined the SHIELD. Even if the idea of pairing you with another young, talented agent was rather good to him, you and Natasha didn't match at first. She didn't want to make new friends, and you weren't strong enough to deal with her stubbornness.
It was like that until one mission. This mission was simple: infiltrate a base, steal some information, and come back to the headquarters. See? Pretty simple. But something happened, and you had to fight—just you two against an army of dangerous men, all armed and ready to kill you.
"Oh, super plan Y/n; now I hope you're ready to die." the Russian said, and you rolled your eyes.
"How should I've known there were so many guys?" you asked, and she felt more angrier.
"Maybe because we're in enmity territorial, тупица (dumbass)." the redhead replied, visibly angry.
"Oh, don't use the Russian card with me, Romanova."
"Don't call me like that."
"And don't call me dumbass."
"You understood?"
"Oh, come on, I'm an agent; I need to speak a lot of languages." you replied, and suddenly you noticed something. "Do you hear this?" you asked, and she looked confused.
"I don't hear anything," she replied.
"That's the point." you said and stood up from your hiding spot to look around "Where are they?" you asked to no one in particular.
"Y/n!" Natasha called you, and you immediately looked at her. "Look." she instructed, and you followed her finger to find a timer.
"What's sons of the b*tches. They had a bomb." you said quitely, and Natasha giggled. It was definitely not the reaction she expected. "Okay, I'll call Fury. And you, try to find a way to escape." you said.
"You're not the boss of me." she replied, and you groaned.
"It's really not the time for this Romanoff!" you yelled, and she flinched a little. "Sorry, but you need to hurry." you said, and she left. You took a moment to regroup and reorganize your mind. "Fury, we have a problem." you said through the communications.
"What is this agent Y/l/n?" he asked.
"There is a bomb, in front of me, ready to explode. I think I can stop it, but if I don't, I need you to come and bring back agent Romanoff." you announced and thought for a moment.
"I can send a group of men there, but agent Y/l/n, do me a favor." he said
"What?"
"Don't force me to inform your family that you didn't make it."
"Oh, come on, Fury, we both know you'll not have to do it." you replied, and he chuckled.
"Oh, so how much time?" he asked.
"Three minutes." you replied.
"It will be close, but they should be there in time. Good luck, Y/n." he said and ended the call.
Outside of the base, Natasha was anxious; she heard your conversation with Fury, and she couldn't stop thinking that maybe she should have stayed.
She wanted to come back for you when she heard the quinjet and an agent come out, and before he could say anything, the floor where she let you; explode. The two agents were both shocked, but fortunately for Fury, you found a way out of the chaos.
"What was that?" the agent said, and you didn't reply first to catch your breath.
"I didn't find a way to stop the bomb, so I did the most obvious thing." you said, and they both looked at you, expecting something more. "I made it explode a little earlier." you explained, and Natasha slammed your shoulder.
"You could have died." she said, and you could hear worry in her voice for the first time since you met her.
"You're welcome, agent Romanoff." You joked, and the agent rolled his eyes.
"Fury will not be happy." he said, and you made a weird face but didn't say anything. When you were back in the HQ, you couldn't stop yourself from tease Natasha, and to your own surprise, you earned the right to call her Natasha.
~~
The time repair but look around us how the people are drifting apart
I have to change of my watch, to change of world
Look around us how the people are wrong
~~
At her parent's house, you quickly made your way to the kitchen, where the star of the day was with her mom. "Happy Birthday, sister-in-law!" You greeted her, and she rolled her eyes. She really liked it when you called her that; she liked you, and honestly, you should already be her sister-in-law since a while if her sister was not so….Nat.
After you hugged the blonde, you walked immediately to Melina, who opened her arms wide for you. "How was the drive?" she asked.
"Pretty tiring, but we're finally here. You really should start to think about moving near us." you said, and she laughed
"Okay, I'll think about it for the next time, but right now, I think someone wants to see you." She pointed to the living room where Wanda was.You let out a little sigh and made your way into the room while Natasha stayed behind with the two women.
"Hey Wands, why this long face again?" You asked, sitting beside her, and she sighed.
"It's Vision," she confessed, and you rolled your eyes.
"Again?" you asked dramatically, and she let out a little chuckle. "What did he do this time?"
"Nothing." she replied, and you frowned your eyebrows.
"And where is the problem?" you asked, completely confused.
"I mean, maybe I was too harsh with him. Perhaps I should let him explain before I decide to end this." she said, and you nodded.
Vision and her recently broke up, and being the good friend you are, you tried your best to help her not regret what she did, but apparently it didn't work.
"You want to give him a second chance?" you asked, and even if you were furious with the fact that he made her cry, if she wanted to forgive him, who were you to say no?
~~
I need rational love; I need to learn how to trust the human race.
I need to be sure that I am the problem.
I need to be sure that you are the cure.
~~
"So?" Yelena asked, and her sister looked at her confused. "How's going with you and Y/n?"
"What do you mean?" The Natasha replied.
"Did you propose to her or not?" Melina said, and her eldest daughter sighed.
"Oh, come on, we already talked about it. I don't know if we're ready?"
"What do you mean? You're dating since five years now. I think you're ready." Yelena said, and her mom nodded to agree.
"Okay. But maybe I'm not ready." The redhead announced.
"You fought aliens together, and you think you're not ready?" The blonde asked, but her sister didn't have time to reply before Thor came to greet the young widow. The redhead used this distraction to leave this conversation.
~~
I talk to her about me; she talks about us, 'bout us, 'bout us.
She's in love with the love, the love, the love, but...
~~
Natasha made her way to the living room where you were, and she heard you talk with Wanda and Kate, who joined you a few seconds prior.
"Wait, a cat?" The archer said, and you nodded.
"Yeah, Natasha said she wants a cat. So I thought we could adopt one together, but for now she doesn't know, so don't ruin my surprise." You warned Kate, and she nodded quietly.
~~
To find the love now, it's the grail.
To find the love now, it's the grail.
A little drama red on your lips
~~
Natasha didn't make her presence known for a moment. She just stayed here and looked at you while you talked and laughed with Kate and Wanda. Unfortunately for her, Melina came and stayed beside her.
~~
We're not obligated to be enamoured to love each other.
The wedding is to please the motha.
The wedding is to please the motha.
~~
"I know it looks like I want to control your life, but I think you really need to ask her." Melina said, and Natasha looked at her.
"What do you—" "Hey Nat, come here." The young archer exclaimed, and your girlfriend took a last look at her mom before she came and sat beside you.
The wedding is to please the motha.
But I'll even ask you if you want to marry me
~~
When she sat, you placed your hand on her tight and she placed her hand in yours. She really wanted it, but she had to wait for the right moment. At least that's what she said to herself.
~~
On all the streets of the city, we wandered.
Even if we don't marry, we will be happy.
You know I'm not the type to be engaged.
You know I'm more the type to be bored.
~~
Natasha was playing with your hand while you were talking, and she unconsciously focused her gaze on your fingers. She couldn't help but think about this day one week ago, when you were doing shopping. You spotted a jewelry shop, and you stopped in front of the window to look at the necklace and the earrings. Your girlfriend stopped next to you, and her gaze fell on a beautiful ring. 'It'll look good on you' she thought, and before she could make this comment aloud, you dragged her to another bookstore for the third time this afternoon.
The Russian looked at you in the store; you were trying to find a new book for her, and she started to think about her life before you started dating. She didn't imagine herself in a relationship for five years, but maybe it was because they weren't you.
~~
People who stay together for the life
Before they become lovers, they are friends.
We'll try to make one all night, but
We stay kids as long as our parents are alive
~~
"Where is Lucky?" Yelena asked, and this brought back her sister from her memories.
"He's with my mom. He had an appointment with the vet, and he was too tired to come." The brunette said the blonde nodded. "If Melina had called me earlier, I would have brought him."
"It's not my fault if you are not aware of everything." Melina said, and you chuckled.
"Oh come on Melina, you called me when I was sleeping; I almost won't be able to come." Wanda spoke dramatically, and you laughed.
"Sorry, but you have bad timing, Melina." You said, and the older woman glared at you.
"Oh, and what were you doing, you two?" She said pointing at you and Natasha, but neither of you replied. You blushed, and Wanda gasped.
"It's totally gross." The sokovian said, and you chuckled. "And Nat, you really replied?" She asked, and your girlfriend blushed.
"Of course, I replied. She's my mom, and she could be scary when you don't reply to her calls." The Russian defends herself.
"But you were..." The witch spoke, and Yelena seemed to finally notice what you were talking about.
"Okay, can we not talk about my sister's sex life for my birthday, please?" The blonde asked, but it was more of an order. Kate fake gagged, and you rolled your eyes.
"Oh come on, stop acting like you just discovered that." You said.
"Y/n stop!" The two sisters said, and you laughed.
~~
I talk to her about me; she talks about us, about us, about us.
She's in love with the love, the love, the love, but...
~~
"Is it true that you want to move on?" Kate asked, and you frowned at your eyebrows.
"How do you know that?" You asked her.
"Clint told me." She replied and shrugged her shoulders.
"And it's true." Natasha said. "I want a big house. I mean, I love our house now, but I need a new training room." She explained.
"And we also need a porch, for our home date." You added, and your girlfriend chuckled. You were definitely the more romantic, but it's okay because you loved it.
~~
To find the love now, it's the grail.
To find the love now, it's the grail.
A little drama red on your lips
We're not obligated to be enamoured to love each other.
~~
After a little more talk, you excuse yourself to go to the bathroom. When you left, all eyes were now on the redheaded Russian. She was totally oblivious because her own attention was focused on the wine glass on the table; there was a lipstick mark on it, your lipstick mark.
~~
The wedding is to please the motha.
The wedding is to please the motha.
~~
You came back but immediately excused yourself again, but to the kitchen now. And this time Melina cleared her throat, and her daughter looked at her.
"I think it's the best time now." Melina said, and Wanda and Kate looked at Natasha, confused.
"Wait, you didn't propose to her yet?" The young brunette said, and Natasha sighed.
"But why?" The sokovian asked this time.
"Apparently she's not ready." The blonde Russian said.
"What do you mean you're not ready?" Wanda asked, visibly shocked. "I've known you for a while now, and I think everybody here can confirm that nobody made you happier than her. So what is the problem?"
"But if she doesn't want?" Natasha asked, and Kate groaned.
"Oh come on, Nat, she called Yelena her sister-in-law, she only has an eye for you, and every time we talk about weddings, she's the most implied." The archer said.
"She has like, twenty wedding dresses in her gallery picture." Wanda said.
"And she even did the guess list." Yelena added, and her sister was shocked.
"Hear. She's totally ready and she wait you." Melina said. "You fought aliens and Nazis and took down one of the worst HQs in the world together. So why you should not be ready? You know everything about each other, and you love each other, despite the fact that you always act like an old married couple. So what's your point?"
Natasha processed all she heard and took a deep breath before standing up. "If she says no, I'll be desperate." She said before storming to the kitchen.
~~
The wedding is to please the motha.
But I'll even ask you if you want to marry me.
~~
"Hey babe, sorry I was about to come, but Lila sent me a video of this cat." You said when you saw Nat enter the kitchen. She stopped beside you, and you showed her the video.
"He's so cute." She cooed, and you smiled.
"Did you see that?" You looked at her, and she was nervous. Girlfriend instinct, you made her sit on the nearest chair and took her hands for a little reassurance. "What's going on?" You asked.
"I have something to ask you." She spoke, and you nodded. Okay, don't laugh. I didn't prepare anything." She warned you, and you nodded again. "Okay Y/n. I wanted to wait for the right time, but I found that there was really no wrong time; I was just afraid. We've been together for a long time now; you were with me during the attack on New York; you were here when we fought Hydra; we ran away together after the accords; and you helped me destroy the red room." She paused to take a breath. "I know I was not ready until now, and the girls said that I didn't really have to be scared or anything. I'm sure you already chose the dress, and apparently you even did the guess list. You're very precious to me, and what I could do without you..." She was rambling, but you stopped her.
"Wait, who told you about the guess list?" You asked.
"Yelena. But this is not the time now." She spoke, and you nodded. "So today I was like, 'no, Nat, she would never want to spend all her life with you, like, why?' but after I talked with the girls, they were like, Wait, you're totally dumb to think that she doesn't want it' and I was like, 'Really?', and they were like 'its obvious she want' and here we are now." She took a deep breath. "Man, I'm really nervous." She said, and you chuckled.
"Sooo?" you asked.
"Yeah, I want to ask you, do you want to marry me?" She asked, and she didn't let you have the chance to reply before she was rambling again. "Wait, you're not obligated or anything. It's not because we spent five years together that's mean you want to spend more. It's just you always so–"
You kissed her to stop her, and when you pulled away, she was confused. "Yes, Natasha, I want to marry you." You said, and she started to cry.
"You want to? Even though I'm definitely not the best–"
You kissed her again. "Yes, I want to marry you. And don't worry, I really think you're the best choice for me." You said, and she smiled. "Usually it should be the one who's been proposed who should cry." You joked, and she chuckled.
"I was nervous" she admitted, and you kissed her forehead.
"And how are you now?" You asked.
"Relive and happy." She said, and you smiled.
"I can't wait to call you my wife." You said, and she grinned. You wanted to say something else, but some footsteps stopped you. When you both looked in the direction of the sounds, you found the women there, visibly waiting for something.
"She said yes!!" Natasha yelled, and you laughed. The women face were now bright with a wide smile.
"It's the best present you could get me." Yelena said, and you hugged her.
"You're such a drama queen, sister-in-law." You replied, and you rolled your eyes.
Yes, that's it. Natasha watched you talk with her sister, and honestly, she was more than happy to finally asked you the question. You're totally hers now, and she's totally yours.

Melina and f reader. Fainting in Melinas arms.
assuming this is for the blurb/drabble thing, lemme know if it’s not also this kind of turned into a small fic lmao
You reunited with Melina when she came with Alexei, Natasha, and Yelena to take down the Red Room. You were old lovers and Melina had thought that you were killed on a mission years ago — turns out, Dreykov had kept you in the Red Room since you were Melina’s weakness.
When she saw you, she froze. At first, she wasn’t even sure that it was really you — it shocked her to her core. She was nearly attacked by someone who Alexei fought off, as she couldn’t stop staring at you. Alexei joined her after the guy was unconscious, confused until he saw you. He knew how close you and Melina had been and put a cautious hand on her shoulder.
“We have to save Y/N,” Melina whispered, watching you train with the other Widows.
“We will,” Alexei promised her, until he gently guided her away.
You were among the Widows whom Dreykov ordered to attack Natasha. After being freed from the brainwash by Yelena, Natasha recognized you and told you to go to Melina. You wasted no time in running there, getting there just in time to help Melina as she was fighting off agents.
When she saw you kicking ass, it was the first time she had truly smiled in along time. She had always loved watching you fight, you always managed to mesmerize her. “Just like old times,” she called out, catching your grin and the teary-eyed look in your eyes before jumping back into the fight.
You two managed to take care of most of your enemies, but one agent had managed to slam you into the wall, leaving your head throbbing and your vision blurry. Melina managed to knock him out but when she turned around to you, she saw you stumbling away from the wall, dizzy.
“Y/N?” She called out. When you didn’t seem to hear her, she inched closer, only for you to stumble right into her arms. She caught you and gasped when she saw you unconscious.
Melina slowly laid you down, gently tapping at your cheeks and cursing when she saw the wound on your head. “Y/N, love, c’mon,” she murmured, brow creasing in worry.
She pet your hair a bit and after an antagonizing minute, your eyes fluttered open and met hers with confusion. “M’lina?” You slurred, dazed.
“Welcome back,” Melina said, smiling warmly at you. “You fainted.” She glanced around, seeing how unstable the room was. The ground began to shake as the Red Room was collapsing.
“What’s going on?” You mumbled, leaning heavily against your former lover.
Melina wrapped her arms around you, supporting you and helping you sit up. “It’s alright. Let’s just take it slow, okay?” She soothed, not wanting to worry you even if she was worried herself.
She helped you stand and helped you stumble out. Eventually, you regained your footing and by the time you got on the ground, you had gotten separated from Melina again. But, it didn’t take her long to find you and, seeing you quite disoriented, she wrapped her arms around you.
“I’m gonna take you home, love,” she whispered, and you practically melted into her arms. Home.
You were mostly silent on the way home, still processing being free from the brainwash. Melina was piloting and you were co-piloting while Alexei sat in the back. Melina was thrilled to have you back in her life, but worried at both your quietness and the fact that you had fainted.
When you got home, Alexei went off to do his own stuff, and Melina guided you into the living room. Despite your soft protests, she carefully treated your injuries and bundled you in blankets. You were definitely out of it, so she used extra care.
Afterwards, Melina wrapped her arms around you. It didn’t take you long to fall asleep, lulled by her warmth and sweet nothings. Melina cooed when she saw that you were fast asleep and just rested with you until it was time for dinner.

Beach Bums
Pairing: Caregiver!Melina x little!reader
Summary: While you and Melina are at the beach, she nurses you.
Warning: Age Regression, nursing
Translations: Мед = Honey
A/N: @lovelyladyships recommend this :)
Tumblr media
〈★〉
You ran out from the water and to where Melina was sitting and watching you. Melina suggested that you two go to the beach, and you happily agreed. You always loved when she took you places.
She saw you running away from the water and over to her. She smiled, “Hey little one, did you have fun in the water?”. You smiled back while nodding, but Melina frowned when she saw you panting a little.
“Are you getting tired Мед?” she asked with concern. You nodded slightly, “Okay, come here”. You sat down next to her on the towel that was placed on the ground.
She looked inside her bag and pulled out your nursing blanket. You looked at her nervously, you never really nursed in public. Well, it was only once, at the park.
“But Mommy” you whined a little “What if someone see us?”. Melina pretends to think, she answers a second later. “Well they’ll see us”, she said without any doubt.
She drags you onto her lap, laying your head over her right arm and puts the blanket over you. She was wearing a two-piece bathing suit, she pulled one of the straps down, revealing her breast. You stared at it with slight hesitation, she noticed this.
“Go on little one, it’ll give you more energy so you can play.” You finally attached your mouth to her pink nipple. While sucking, you felt her hand massage your bum. Your tense muscles relax as you consume her warm milk.
You detached a few moments later and looked up at her. “Do you feel better Мед?”, you nodded in response. She pulled the blanket from around you and you sat up. “You can go back and play now” she said, seeing you waiting. You smiled at her and gave her a kiss on the cheek, going back to play in the water.

Trust is Earned
Tumblr media
Part 2 of Face to Face - I’m dedicating this story to @alicenter because her comment on the first part made me think of this story.
Summary: You weren’t used these types of comfort as you lay in a soft bed with to many pillows and blankets. Instead of sleeping, you walk around their house and see the memories they’ve built. But Melina accuses you of snooping and her distrust of you.
Warning: jealousy, fighting, bullet wound, distrust, family drama, mention of killing, mention of past abuse
Word count: 5.2 k
You stared up at the ceiling fan, watching it spin around and around. It was therapeutic in a way but you wished it would help you fall asleep. No matter how hard you tried, sleep wasn’t coming to you and you knew it. The bed was too soft, the room was too cold, and your mind wouldn’t shut up. With a heavy sigh, you swung your feet to the ground and walked out of the room. You weren’t sure what your plan was. But your feet walked you around their home. You saw pictures from Christmas, birthday parties, and trips to the capital. A tight feeling began to form in the middle of your chest. You picked up the old photo album from Ohio and flipped through the fake memories. It was a day you remembered so clearly, you shot Christmas, Easter, and summer vacation in one day. But Christmas was your favorite. All the brightly wrapped boxes that you knew were empty but you wanted to open every single one of them. Just for one moment, it would be real. “What are you doing?” You spun around to see Melina standing behind you. It was weird seeing her in a robe with slippers on but you didn’t miss the pistol in her hand.
“I was -”
“Snooping,” she grabbed the album from your hand. “Finding out all our secrets to report back to the Red Room.” Your eyes grew wide at the accusation. “So it’s true.” You snapped out of it.
“What are you talking about?” You questioned. “I’m helping SHIELD take down the Red Room,” she pointed the gun at you. You raised your hands, showing her you had no weapon on you. Now you were trained to be a weapon, similar to the train she’s gone through, but you were wearing Natasha’s extra sleeping clothes and you were extremely sleep deprived. Your brain was struggling to make sense of what was going on. “You don’t trust me.” You whispered.
“I want to,” she said. There was a slight shake of her hand. “I want to trust you so bad but I can’t,” your heart skipped and your stomach dropped. “But I know what they are capable of and I can’t risk the safety of my girls.” My girls. My girls. My girls. It was a mantra that echoed inside your head. All of a sudden, the room became too small and you could hear your heart pounding in your ears. My girls. My girls. You weren’t part of that. To Melina, you were disposable. You weren’t sure what hurt more her saying that or you believe her.
“What the hell is going on?” Natasha asked, appearing out of nowhere with Yelena behind her. It seemed like they were a packaged duo, one wasn’t far without the other. You weren’t a part of that. My girls. My girls.
“So,” your voice stopped the arguing between Melina and Natasha. “What’s the play, Melina? Are you going to kill me and I’ll become another red mark on your ledger or are you going to bring me back to Dreykov and let him do it?”
“No,” Natasha said, standing between you and Melina. “She’s not going anywhere. She is staying here where she’s safe and we can be a family again.”
“Natalia, we can’t trust her,” Melina said. “She’s been with them for years. This could be a trap to get the three of us back.” Three not four but three. Once again she didn’t add you, creating a division between you and them. My girls. My girls. Natasha, Yelena, and Melina. You weren’t a part of it.
“She was with them because she gave herself up to save us or did you forget about that night?” You didn’t want to be the driving wedge between them. You’ve been alone for years, what’s one more night?
“Maybe Melina’s right,” Natasha whipped around to stare at you. “I could be a target and staying here endangers your family. I wasn’t thinking and I was being selfish. I’ll get my stuff and head out, find a hotel, or stay with the team.” You pushed past Natasha and headed to the room that gave you. Not your room. A room. My girls. Three not four. You started throwing your stuff into the duffle bag, not worrying about how it looked. You turned to leave, almost running into Natasha.
“You don’t have to go,” she said. “I’ll convince Melina. I’ll..”
“It’s okay,” you said, cutting her off. “I don’t want to get in the way between you and her. I’ll be okay.”
“I called Maria. She’s expecting you. I’ll text you the address.”
“Thank you,” you shifted your weight from side to side. “I should get going. I didn’t mean to wake you and Yelena.” You had to get out. So you did, leaving her in the room that was supposed to be yours.
*
Maria opened the door before you could even knock. “Saw you on the camera,” she said as you raised your eyebrow in question. “You look like you could use a drink.” You laughed, bitterly as she stepped out of the way. You entered the house. Phil was at the dining room table, papers covering it and you saw Clint in the kitchen making a pot of coffee.
“Do you guys sleep?” You questioned as Maria closed the door.
“Not when we have more questions than answers,” Phil said, waxing at you as his greeting. You sat down at the small kitchen island, dropping your bag to the floor.
“So we have vodka, tequila, or beer,” Clint said, pouring coffee into a mug.
“Is it good vodka or American vodka?” You asked with a tilt of your head. Clint glared at you.
“I’ve known Nat for a long time,” he said, pulling the vodka bottle out of the fridge. “Do you know I’d offer you American vodka?” It pulled a small smile to your lips.
“I’m glad she had you,” Maria sat down next to you as Clint poured you a shot. “All of you,” you clarified, staring into the clear liquid. “You were there when I wasn’t. Cheers.” The liquid burned as it went down. “So, what can I do to help?”
*
You were sitting on the couch going over all the information SHIELD had on the Red Room. It wasn't much but mixed with what Melina had the answer to the 101 questions had to be in here somewhere. You were twirling a pen in your hand as you read over Peggy Carter’s notes. Phil and Clint called it a night but Maria stayed up and she was doing a bad job of being subtle. “You're staring again.” You said, closing the file you were reading. You switched to beer after your third shoot.
“Just putting a face to fall the stories I’ve heard about,” you raised an eyebrow at her.
“They told you about me?” You questioned. The agent nodded her head. That was hard to believe.
“You don’t believe me?” You smirked. “It was mostly Natasha. She told me about Ohio and that night at the airstrip. The few times I was at their house I’ve caught Melina staring at your door. I mistook it as a guest room and almost got shot.”
“Why are you telling me this?” You asked, turning to face her.
“Do you regret that night?” She asked instead. You leaned back, resting your back on the arm of the couch and your legs crossed in front of you. “Do you regret giving yourself to him?”
“No,” you whispered. “And I’d do it again. In any lifetime, I’d do anything to protect my sisters,” you took a sip of the beer. “I’d sell my soul a thousand times to the devil to keep them safe. I think that’s why it hurts so much that Melina doesn’t trust me,” you rubbed your hand across your face. “But once he’s gone for good, they’ll be safe and be a family again.” You turned to get back to work, ignoring the frown on Maria’s face.
“They’re your family too,” you closed your eyes, taking in a slow shaky breath and letting it out.
“Maybe,” you shrugged. “Once upon a time, they were. They’ve made a life here and I don’t know if I fit into it. I’m disposable.”
*
“Can you please talk to me?” Melina asked, pouring two cups of coffee for her and Natasha and orange juice for Yelena. Natasha was cutting up a pepper to throw in an omelet that asked for. She was cutting the vegetable a little too aggressively but it was the best way to give her anger an outlet.
“There is nothing to say,” Natasha mumbled, putting the peppers into the pan.
“You have to see it from my perspective,” the older Black Widow said. “My priority is to keep you girls safe.”
“Who is watching out for her?” Natasha hissed. She cleaned the knife before putting it away in the correct place. “We should have gone back for her.” She had so much guilt eating up inside her from that night. The gunshots that hit the plane kept her up at night.
“How?” Melina questioned, starting on Yelena’s lunch. “Please tell me how we could have saved her,” she sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Your sister knew the consequences when she locked us out of that plane.”
“Now we have a chance to be a family again,” she placed the omelet on the plate. “But you don’t trust her. What's it going to take?” Before Melina could answer, Yelena entered the kitchen. She sat down in front of the omelet and orange juice.
“Do you think I’ll still be able to play tomorrow?” Yelena asked, cutting into the food. “Will it be safe?” Natasha grabbed the mug that Melina poured for her.
“I don’t know,” she answered honestly. “After I drop you off at school, I’ll regroup with the team. There will be an agent stationed outside the house and at your school.”
“What about you?” Yelena frowned.
“I’ll be fine,” she reassured her sister with a smile. “I’ll be with Maria or Clint at all times.” She nodded, pushing her food around her plate. Something else was bothering her, it wasn’t hard for Natasha to notice the change in her sister’s behavior. “What else is wrong?”
“What about Y/n?” She questioned. Now that was a great question. From what Maria told her, you refused a protection detail and were sounding self-destructive.
“She’ll be with me,” she said, ignoring the look on Melina’s face. “Once this is over, we’ll all be safe.”
*
You were standing in the kitchen, buttering a bagel. “Are you okay?” Clint asked. You didn’t look at the SHIELD agent.
“Yes,” you said. “Why wouldn’t I be?” He leaned against the counter with his arms crossed.
“Because it looks like you are going to murder someone with that butter,” you smirked, rolling your eyes. “I think you could.” Oh 100% but it would be a messy way to kill someone and not a cool way to die. The front door opened and Natasha walked in. Her green eyes immediately found you. They screamed ‘Are you okay?’ and ‘Please talk to me.’ You smiled, nodding your head. You hoped it conveyed everything you were feeling. “Ready to meet the boss man?” Clint asked, following you to the couch.
“Yeah,” you said, standing behind the couch while Clint sat down to join the others.
“Just don’t say anything stupid,” Natasha teased. You gasped in mock offense.
“I would never,” you smiled as Maria accepted the video call. The screen changed to a man with an eye patch wearing a trench coat. An odd outfit you thought.
“So,” he said. “This is the infamous Black Widow,” you took a bite of your bagel. “I’m guessing you know who I am.” You nodded.
“Nick Fury, the director of SHIELD.
“Also the reason you aren’t in custody or buried 6 feet under.” A smirk formed on your lips.
“Are you expecting a thank you, sir?” You questioned. You heard Natasha let out a small groan. He folded his hands and leaned back in his chair.
“What I’m expecting is for you to help take down the Red Room and follow every order my agents give,” he said. “Or I will pick one of the numerous countries that you're wanted in and drop you off.” Fair enough. You shrugged.
“Sounds like a fair exchange,” you said. “And after the Red Room is gone and Dreyokv is dead, what is going to happen to me?” Natasha offered you a spot at SHIELD but she wasn’t the boss. The man in front of you was. Similarly, another man held your fate.
“Well, that’s up to you,” he said. You raised an eyebrow, not expecting to have a choice in the matter. “Depending on the outcome of the mission, I’ll be offering you a position at SHIELD.”
“If I were to turn down your generous offer?” There was an intense stare-off between you and the Director. But to your surprise, the man smiled. Or it was something close to a smile.
“I like you, Widow,” he said. “I think we’ll get along well.”
*
It was lunchtime. Yelena was sitting outside with a few of her friends. She was stressed, on edge, that much you could tell. She was glancing over her shoulder, barely eating her food or engaging in the conversation around her. You made out the SHIELD agent assigned to your sister. Taking a sip of your coffee, you made note of the surrounding area. The school was across the street from a neighborhood, an odd place to put a school you thought. A wooded area surrounded the small sports complex and there was a parking lot in front. You opened your laptop and pulled up a satellite image of the school. It was clear and you looked back at Yelena. She was talking to a girl, and whatever she said made the girl’s cheek blush. You smiled, shaking your head with a laugh. This is why you locked them out of the plane so they could have a normal life - go to football games, flirt with people, and smile. You were being honest with Maria, no matter what you’d keep them safe. So when the same two girls walked past the car for the 3rd time something wasn’t right. You were a trained spy, able to sneak into government buildings and take down countries. Your gut instinct kept you alive. Carefully, you opened the glove compartment and pulled out a pistol, your widow bites, and a hat. You put the hat on and attached the gun to your hip, covering it with your sweatshirt. As you listened to your phone ring, you got out of the car. “Where did you go?” Natasha asked.
“Yelena’s school. Send back up,” you didn’t flinch as the gunshot rang out, hitting the SHIELD agent. “I’ll get her safe,” you told her. You began to run as the school erupted into chaos, pushing past students and school officials. “Hurry.” You put your phone in your pocket. Yelena stood up from the table, looking around in a panic. A scream left her lips as the girl next to her was shot. You got to her, pulled her to the ground, and flipped the picnic table on its side. It wasn’t the best cover but it was the only option. “Hey, hey,” she had blood splattered on her face and her green eyes were wide and frantic. “Eyes on me, okay?” With the sleeve of your shirt, you tried to clean up some of the blood on her face. She nodded. “I’m going to get you out of here and SHIELD is on their way.” Another shot and Yelena squeaked.
You grabbed a small makeup mirror and opened it, using it to see behind the picnic table. There was a sniper on top of the school and a small group of Widows swarming the parking lot. You pulled out your pistol. “On my mark, you are going to run towards the school.” You looked at the blueprints of the building, the cafeteria was through the closest door, and down the hall was the gym. That was your best option.
“I’m scared,” she whispered. You nodded.
“I know but you’ll be okay. Reader?” She nodded. “Go!” You popped up and aimed for the sniper. You weren’t aiming to kill just to disarm. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Yelena run towards the school. With the sniper taking cover, the Widows on the ground ran over to you. You fired some shots at them before following Yelena. They shot back.
Yelena was standing in the cafeteria waiting for you. “Where are we going?” She asked as you grabbed her arm and dragged her along.
“Gym,” you told her. “We can circle back to the front to get back to the car.” Glass shattering echoed the quiet hallway. You turned around and saw 2 Widows in the hallway. “Fucking hell,” you mumbled, running towards the gym. Like the hallway the gym was empty. “Hide behind the bleachers,” you said. “Don’t come out until I say so.” She ran behind the bleachers without hesitation. You had just enough time to reload your magazine as the two Widows walked in.
“Gde ona (Where is she?)” One of them asked. You didn’t recognize them so they must be a lower level than you.
“I have no idea who you are talking about,” you were accepting the hit to your stomach but the air was still knocked out of your lungs. You stayed on your feet as they circled you, mimicking a lion and its prey. But you knew the real roles here, they weren’t going to kill you or Yelena.
“We don’t want to hurt you, sister,” your heart skipped. They were your sisters brought together by blood and violence.
“Funny,” you said. “I was thinking the same thing.” You shot one of them with your widow bites and she went down easily. You dogged the attack, dropping to the ground and sticking out your leg. She fell but she grabbed onto your leg and threw you to the ground. You hit your head hard against the wooden gym floor. You both stood up slowly, facing each other. “I’m sorry,” you charged her, tackling her to the ground. She fought against you, hitting you but you were stronger. It was one quick punch and she was out cold. You fell back, your heart pounding in your rib cage as you stared at the unconscious Widow. “You can come out Yelena,” you said, standing up. The blonde walked out from behind the bleachers.
“Are you okay?” She asked. You nodded.
“Yeah,” you said, placing your hand on her back. “Let’s get out of here.” You ran out of the gym but there was a nagging feeling in the back of your head. They were too easy to take down. The girls were around Yelena’s age so they weren’t experienced. Why did he send them? “My car is over there,” you said, opening the door and pointing towards the direction of the car. The front of the school was still in chaos. “Let’s go,” you put the hood of Yelena’s jacket up to try to cover her face.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. The apology took you by surprise. It was something you weren’t expecting, especially from her. “I’m sorry you had to hurt them to protect me.”
“I’ll do anything to protect you and Natasha, okay?” She nodded but you could still feel the guilt radiating off of her. You saw the Widow across the street and you pushed Yelena to the ground as the gun went off. The pain wasn’t bad as the bullet hit your stomach. Without thinking you raised your pistol and shot the Widow. It was a quick and easy kill but it somehow hurt more than the bullet.
“Oh my god, oh my god,” you hissed as Yelena pushed her hands on the gunshot wound.
“I’m okay, not my first time getting shot,” you joked. “I need you to drive. Can you do that?” Her face was drained of color but she nodded. “Good,” you handed her the keys and got into the car.
“Where are we going?” Yelena asked, her hands stained red and shaking.
“The safe house,” you said. “Drive.” She did as sirens began to echo towards the school.
  *
You squeezed your eyes shut as Phil dug to get the bullet out of your stomach. The door to the safe house opened, you had half the mind to grab your gun but you heard Melina’s voice asking if Yelena was alright. Natasha and Maria walked over to you. You were only wearing a sports bra and jeans, sitting in the dining room. “She's gonna pull through, doc?” Natasha teased but you didn’t miss the concern in her eyes.
“No exit wound,” Phil said, not looking up. “I have to get the bullet out before she heals.”
“Super soldier serum,” you hissed. “We are giving it before graduation. Fuck, have you ever done this before?” You asked him.
“Move out of the way before you do more damage,” Melina said, putting on gloves and taking the scalpel out of Phil’s hand. The agent moved out of the way, stealing a glance at Natasha.
“Phil, go check in with Clint and see if he’s found anything,” he nodded, taking off his gloves. “Go talk to Yelena and get her statement,” Natasha hesitated but you nodded. She went to join the blonde on the couch. “I’ll be back to get your statement when you're all patched up.
“Aye, aye, captain,” you gave her a salute. It was just you and Melina. You were surprised how gently her touch was when she tried to get the bullet out of your stomach. “I thought you didn't trust me,” you said. “Surprised you are allowing yourself in such a vulnerable position.” She got the bullet out and placed it on the paper towel. She cleaned the wound before stitching it up.
“If you wanted me dead you would have killed me the moment I opened that door,” you chuckled. She wasn’t wrong. “Thank you for saving her.” She placed a bandage over the stitches.
“No need to thank me,” you whispered. She took a step back and looked at you. Even with the serum rushing through your veins, it didn’t hide your scars. Each scar had a story, a name behind who gave it to you. These scars that littered your body were from other Widows during training, from Dreykov, and a few from your hand. You hated how small you felt under her eyes.
“Where did you get this one?” She asked, touching a scar on your shoulder.
“I got hit that night flying the plane,” you stood up, winching as you felt the stitches move. The serum would have healed soon. You helped her clean up the medical supplies. “Still managed to fly to Cuba much to Alexei’s disappointment.” You walked into the kitchen, throwing away the trash. Natasha and Yelena were on the couch and you found a new shirt resting on the back. You put it on. “Only thing that kept me going was your and their voice.” You continued. You rested your hand on Yelena’s shoulder, she looked up at you. “Are you okay, malen'koye solnyshko (little sun)?” She nodded.
“I am. Thanks to you,” you kissed the top of her head before heading back into the kitchen. Natasha and Yelena followed you. You were surprised by how hungry you were.
“The entire flight I thought Alexei was going to shoot me. I’ve never seen him so angry,” you continued unsure why you were telling them. The words kept following you. “Want a sandwich?” You asked them. Melina and Natasha shook their heads but Yelena let out a quiet, “Yes, please.” “When we landed in Cuba, I stood in front of Dreyokv, Alexei behind him, and guards circling us with their guns drawn. I stood there, unarmed, with a bullet hole in my shoulder.” You cut Yelena’s sandwich in half and placed it in front of her. You began to make your own. “Dreyokv asked where you guys were and I said I didn’t know. Alexei said he’d deal with me,” you felt a chill down your spine. “But Dreykov stopped him and said he knew how to handle me.” You turned your back to them so you wouldn’t have to see their expression.
“What did he do to you?” Melina asked. You closed the fridge, no longer feeling hungry.
“What didn’t he do to me is the better question,” you walked back over to them, eyes glued on your sandwich. You didn’t want to go into too much detail. Yelena was still so young and you didn’t want to taint her view of the world. “I was his malen'kiy pauk (little spider). He wanted to break me but I wouldn’t break.” You took a bite, it tasted bad but you knew you needed the energy. You glanced up at Melina. Her expression was hard to read, it was a strange mix of anger, sadness, and guilt. You shrugged. “But once he’s gone, everything will go back to normal.” You finished the sandwich and put your dish in the sink. “I’ll be in the room Maria gave me if you need anything.” You quickly left, closing the door behind you. Resting your head against the wooden door, you let out a shaky breath and closed your eyes. You could feel his hands on you as you knelt in front of him or one of his advisors. The blood that covered your hands was because of that man. But you weren’t the only one trapped and hurting because one man believed he was God.
*
“We found this,” Clint said, placing a piece of paper on the table.
“What does it say?” Fury asked. He was videoing in for this meeting.
“Come home, malen'kiy pauk (little spider),” Natasha said. Your sisters and Melina looked at you. You leaned back in the chair, hand on your chin. He wanted you back. Time and time again, he told you you were his most prized possession.
“Okay,” you finally said. “If he wants me then he can have me. We can use it as a trap.”
“There is no way it will be that easy,” Clint said. It won’t be. But you were done with this cat-and-mouse game you were playing.
“It won’t be,” you said, standing up. “He could have sent Widows much stronger than he did but he didn’t. Everything that man does has a purpose.”
“What was his reasoning?” Maria asked. You put your hands on your hips.
“To prove a point,” you whispered. “It said that no matter where we go or what we do he has the power to find us,” you faced Fury. “Dreyokv’s daughter is our way to him and we know she’s in Budapest. I’ll end it there.”
“No,” Melina said. Your head whipped to look at the older Black Widow. “You aren’t doing this alone.”
“She’s right,” Natasha added. “We’ll help you take him down.”
“Alright,” you looked back at Fury. “Pack your bags. You leave tomorrow.”
*
A plan was made and you were folding your clothes into your duffle bag. You found the photo strip and you picked it up, sitting on the bed. You remembered that day so clearly. Melina and Alexei brought you and your sisters to the mall to get school supplies. You pleaded for a few quarters to do the photo booth. In the end, it was Yelena’s puppy dog eyes that caught them breaking. “I’m sorry,” you looked up to see Melina. The apology sounded so strange coming from her. “I’m sorry I didn’t come back for you and wasn’t strong enough to save all three of you back then,” you stared at her, mouth open slightly as she walked in and sat down. “I cycled through the Red Room so many times before you were even born. For the longest time, those walls were all I knew and I was never given a choice. Until a 14-year-old girl gave me one,” you smiled, whipping away a tear that fell. “Natasha and Yelena were all I had for the longest time and I’d do anything to protect them.” You nodded.
“I get it,” you whispered. “I’m disposable.” Melina’s eyes grew wide.
“No, dorogoy (sweetheart), you are not,” she cupped your cheeks in her hands, pushing the tears away that fell. “You are…” she paused. “Everything. You are the reason I am here, the reason Yelena gets to graduate high school, and the reason Natasha won’t admit her feelings for Maria,” you laughed at Melina’s jab at your sister. “So, thank you. Even though it’s been a long time, you are still part of this family. Okay?”
“Okay,” you whispered, nodding your head. You whipped away your tears. “What happened to me wasn’t your fault.” She frowned, looking down at her hands.
“Why does a mouse born in a cage run on that little wheel?” You didn’t know the answer or if she wanted you to respond.
“But you aren’t a mouse, mama. You were just born in a cage but that’s not your fault.” Melina scoffed, pushing a piece of hair behind your ear.
“Tell me, how did you keep your heart?” It was your turn to think over what she said. You smiled.
“Pain only makes us stronger,” you quoted her. It was a common phrase thrown around in Ohio. But the strongest memory of it was the night you left. Yelena was chasing you and Natasha and she fell and hurt her knee. “Didn’t you tell us that? What you taught us kept me alive.”
*
You were up when you heard a soft knock on your door. Standing up, you opened the door and saw your two sisters. “Is everything okay?” Natasha looked nervous, shifting her weight. Yelena rolled her eyes.
“Can we sleep in here tonight?” Yelena asked. “With the shooting and everything that is going on, we're scared and worried.” You smiled, stepping out of the way so they could come in. After closing the door, you joined them. Yelena was in the middle, you, and Natasha on either side of her. It was how you would lay back in Ohio. “We’re gonna be okay, right?” You stole a glance at Natasha.
“Of course, we will be,” you said, running your fingers through her blonde hair. It was a dangerous promise.
“Because we’re together,” Natasha looked at you with a smile.
“Yeah,” you whispered. “Sometimes in our lives, we will have pain and sorrow but if we are wise we know that there’s a tomorrow.” Yelena smiled.
“Lean on me. When you're not strong.”
“I’ll be your friend. I’ll help you carry on.” Natasha added. Like when Melina told you that pain only made you stronger, it was common for you to say a phrase or two when your sisters were struggling with nightmares or in school. You were surprised they remembered it.
“Exactly,” you said. “Now, we need to get some sleep. We have a busy few days ahead of us.”

Warm (Blurb)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Melina Vostokoff x gn!reader
Warning(s): None but fluff
A/N: From this prompt list (Unedited)
----------
The kitchen was quiet besides the sizzling of the food you were preparing for yourself and your wife. The color of the rising sun illuminated multiple things in the room creating this amazing atmosphere and feeling. The animals were exploring outside of their pin as you already fed them.
"Detka?" You heard Melina's drowsy voice come from your shared bedroom, light pattering of her feet as she made her way over to you.
"Just making breakfast, Angel." You glance over to her walking up to you, your tee-shirt was hanging off of her smaller frame and nothing else clothing her. She looked utterly cute and stunning.
"Mmm, warm." She came up behind you and wrapped her arms around you, her head nuzzling into the crook of your neck.
You chuckle and shake your head. Looking over your shoulder, you kiss the crown of her head. "I love you too, Angel."
