Shortaki Week 2023 - Day Two - Distance / Carnival / Routine

This was the moment I knew I was on a roll doing all three prompts since I almost immediately came up with an idea:

"What if Grandpa Phil's stories of Arnold's mom and dad being in the circus were actually true and there's an alternate universe out there where Arnold goes with them and becomes a tightrope walker? Like his parents were in his dream?" and "What if Helga sees him at a distance when she's in the audience one day [when he's performing in Hillwood] and that's how she gets her crush on him?"

Since it's easier for Helga to hide her crush on Arnold (him being in a traveling circus/carnival and whatnot), she's only really trying to hide it because she thinks it's a pipe dream. It's not like "the Astounding Volcano Boy born from the Green Eyes of San Lorenzo" had any time for silly crushes... Little does she know that he spots her in the crowd and fell in love with her.

They probably get to know each other after shows and write when he's on the road again. Y'know, this would make a good fanfiction...

Running Girl

A little something I wrote spontaneously.

I am freaking exhausted. But it’s not far anymore. Just a few more meters. I push myself and force my legs to go a little faster. My lungs expand more than ever, and I manage to go faster than ever before. As I run into the finish line, I move my arms above my head as I have seen sportsmen do. I hear cheering. I look around and see people standing up from their seat and cheer me on. My eyes search the ranks for my parents. But I can’t seem to find them. My winning smile slowly fades. Where are they? Or my sister? Or my best friends? They always cheered me on from the first row. I slowly move in circles to get a look around, but I still cannot make out any faces. Someone pushes a water bottle in my hand. I swirl around and see a girl with more bottles in a basket. She hands them to the other girls that were running with me. The cheering starts to fade away and my vision starts to blur. What the hell is happening? I don’t know any of the girls. No one I know is here to cheer me on. A weird feeling starts to creep in. Is this a joke? A dream?

My throat screams for water and I put the bottle to my mouth and gulp down half of its content. They put some kind of flavour in it. Something sweet. But the more I drink the more my throat seems to dry out. So, I gulp down the rest and before I can even finish the thought to get me another bottle the girl stands in front of me again and hands me another. “You seem extremely thirsty.” Her voice is calming, and I begin to relax. All my swimming thoughts fade away and I focus on her. On her green-brownish eyes, her turned-up nose, the freckles that sprinkle her entire nose and her cheeks, her small lips that are turned into a shy smile. I can just nod, too fascinated and captivated by her face. Her cheeks turn a light shade of pink and her eyes turn to the ground. I want her to look at me again. But I still cannot find words.

She turns to go away and as I put up my arm to stop her, my entire vision fades to black.

I bolt upright in bed. I breath heavily as I have actually run a marathon. Realization kicks in and my brain starts working. It actually has been a dream. Just a dream.

SUMMARY: The Islanders recoupled, and things are hotting up!

You trace your fingertips along his formidable biceps to his forearms and trace his piston tattoo. A looks a little bit lighter than the other ones, and a little faded. “I love your tattoo. What’s the piston tattoo about?”

“Ah, that’s my very first tattoo. I’m really into machines and mechanical stuff, like model building, woodworking, y’know stuff like that. Symbolises power, endurance, and, I guess, tirelessness at work. When I was a kid, one of my toys was this train set, so it means a lot to me. Brings back happy memories.” He looks a bit wistful, like he’s guarding something private. I better leave it for now. We all have our past secrets.

A moment later, the shadow on his face is gone, and he’s beaming at you again. “Suits me, right?”

“Yeah. I can’t deny that.” You let out a giggle and manoeuvred behind him, wrapping your arms and legs around him. You gently kiss the soft skin on his gear tattoo, and Gary shivers against your lips.

“Ah!.”

“What about these?” You gently ran your hands over the gear tattoo and said, “You're a decent spoon.”

He chuckled. “I just really like gears and, like, knowing how things work. The mechanisation of things.”

“And the lightsaber?” You questioned before acknowledging, “It represents ‘a force within!”

“Yeah. Y’know I’m a hardcore Star Wars fan. I’m glad we have that in common.” He continued explaining, “I had the tattoo done as a reminder that you can gain control and overcome any obstacle in your life. It’s a symbol for strength and courage.”

You pointed to the bottom of his leg tattoo, asking, “Is that a scar?”

“Yeah.”

“How did that happen?”

Gary rolled his eyes. “Oh, my nan's puppy was a little knobhead. Fucking hell. He used to bully me all the time. He was horrible to me.Love him to bits now, but…” He trails off.

You chuckled. “I think I'm gonna love him. What’s his name?”

Gary huffed. “Ollie. She should have named him Cujo. He can be an arsehole to new people.”

Next: OPERATION HOPE BEGINS...

Iain Stirling: It’s time for a challenge, and this one’s called ‘Meet Your Match.’ When our Islanders applied, they filled out detailed questionnaires. We have shamelessly stolen a load of confidential information from the questionnaires for ‘The Compatibility Test’. (It's all the rage right now.) And ran it through a complex algorithm on the Love Island supercomputer. Nay, okay, we showed it to Andy the Intern. And he ranked the five boys with each girl in terms of compatibility. The girls will take turns trying to rank the boys in order of their compatibility. They’ll place a love heart emoji on the boy she thinks is most compatible with them, and a sad face emoji on the least compatible boy. She will then arrange the rest of the boys. Every time a girl needs to re-jig the order, she gets a mark.The girl with the least marks wins.
