cue screaming abt legends Z-A
#I’m so happy they went for kalos instead of unova#like I love unova. I love unova. but I wasn’t sure what they’d do with it that would feel right#also I was 100% expecting johto either let’s go johto or legends celebi bc SO MUCH johto in that presents. THE UNOWN. and raikou and silver#but man kalos!!!! I rlly love the gen vi pokemon and it’ll be so cool to see what they do with a different version of the region#I’m expecting a kinda time travel element honestly? it seemed to go between futuristic + past stuff a BUNCH#with the redevelopment plan and the shiny light city#+ the two versions of the map it shows. those are Definitely 2 versions and one of them is past + more similar to the one we know#and one is updated but that could just be updating for switch#but ALSO Z-A. like okay AZ for a start is coming back but that’s very much a going backwards indication right#man my friend got to watch in real time as I went through the plot of the kalos games and remembered AZ and have everything click into place#it took me way too long to click that it was kalos in the trailer like it took me until talonflame to be like wait. and then PRISM TOWER#but god yeah I’m just like. I wanna know where they’re going with this bc I DOUBT it’s war era#it definitely COULD be but it would feel like a lot yknow for lumiose to be so similar that long ago#it’s not like 3000 years is a reasonable number in the first place anyway pokemon is weird#rlly rlly hoping there is the full region and that it’s made to feel less empty than paldea and hisui#if they’re going for an open world again which I feel like they will#I saw someone say they’re setting the whole thing in lumiose which would be a CHOICE. it’d be very different for sure#I don’t wanna say I wouldn’t like that but it would be a completely new kinda pokemon game. which would fit the legends idea. who knows#also wanna know what’s up with that logo bc I don’t recognise it. most similar is the aether foundation but that’s not close#even if it would make sense for aether to be around here (and I rlly hope they are)#okay wait so prism tower existing means it HAS to be future right bc clement designed it right? unless he redesigned it or smth#also I am excited abt megas coming back. I do like them they’re easily my favourite of the gimmicks#and I hope this means they’ll be sticking around again near future even though it’d be easy for them to drop them after this legends game#I can see them using lumiose or an otherwise limited setting as a way to stop it being a traditional game bc it’s proooobably not gonna be#like. go get gym badges yknow#yeah I’m rlly excited I can’t wait to see what they do with zygarde and where they’re going with this#pokemon#my money is still on time travel going backwards#luke.txt#plza

Somehow I doubt that Emmet, Elesa and Johanna (if she is even able to get to Unova in time in the first place) would let their loved ones being snatched away again. Sure, they now know what is going on but still.
It is a big struggle to also wrap up Hisui as well since this time they’ve been send forward in time without any of them knowing what happened.
I can see this fic to an end looks like a big struggle but maybe you should also consider leaving open to the reader to see what happens.
After all this fic is about Akari refusing to leave behind Ingo severely injured and saving him. And since Ingo’s injuries are so severe and Akari is getting close to hypothermia they’re send home to be saved.
If anything the wrap up to Hisui would make a good second part. With Akari finishing the Pokédex and Ingo stepping down as Warden and Battle advisor at the dojo. Everyone is able to bid their goodbyes and go back home where they’re eagerly awaited.
Good points Anon, this is actually exactly part of the narrative that’s making me consider changing some things with what the previous ask suggested ^^; because it would be hard!!
I really liked the suggestion that they’re asked to go back by Arceus, but I’m wanting to really consider what they would do with that and how their friends and family will react to it. But I do already have some things in mind ^^
I wasn’t planning on writing them actually going back to Hisui and what they’d do once they get back, but you’re right, that could make a very nice second part/epilogue! I really like that!!
Thank you for your thoughts Anon! I always appreciate when people give thoughts like this and help structure off of initial thoughts and suggestions!!

In Which They Needed Cosmic Help - Ch 17
Summary: Ingo never really knew what to do at parties. This was an important celebration, the Pokedex had just been completed, after all. The Gods were conquered.
He didn't expect a sudden appearance of a familiar face because of an almighty deity, though.
Word Count: 1390
Hurt/Comfort, slight angst
That night, the three of them sat at their kitchen table, eating some takeout from the Sinnoh-an restaurant down the street. The twins hoped that it would make Akari feel more at home in Unova, and they felt it was appropriate to celebrate a successful day. They ate their respective food with smiles and laughs, their Pokemon joining in on the fun. The two men made train puns and simply talked for the sake of talking, Akari giving her own account of some of the funnier battles today.
They ate quickly. Before long, Ingo was packing up their trash and preparing to take it out.
“Uh, um. Is it… I think I’d like to talk about… before Hisui. If that’s okay.” Akari recognized that her tone cut through the happy atmosphere like a knife through butter. Ingo stopped his hands, watching her with his head cocked to the side. He put down the trash and sat back down at the table, taking off his hat. Emmet took his off as well, giving her his full attention.
Now that they were there, she didn’t know where to start. Maybe this was a bad idea, they’d just make her leave now and they’d not want her involved in the Subway anymore, she’d be left alone like she had before all of this had started and this time she didn’t have Gabite-
“Breathe, passenger. We have all the time in the station.” Ingo stretched out an ungloved hand, patting hers softly. Samurott nuzzled her cheek. It knew how sore this subject was.
“Well, I uh.” She cleared her throat and took a deep breath. “I grew up in Sinnoh. My mom and dad didn’t get along, and my mom left pretty early on. I lived with just my dad for a long time. As you could probably imagine. It was fine, we just moved around a lot. He could never stay in the same place for long. I never knew why.
“Eventually, he left too. I don’t think he died, but I really don’t know. One day, he just left the house and he never came back. He took his partner Pokemon too, a Zangoose. I used to love that Zangoose. It would watch over me while my dad wasn’t home and make sure I got fed and was warm. He took it with him, leaving behind a Gible. It had been following us for awhile and Dad said I could keep her around as long as she didn’t bother him.
“After he left, I stayed in the house for months. I waited for him to come back, but he never did. I eventually left and asked around and no one had ever heard of him before. Or me. So I left town with Gible and tried to find him myself. It seemed like no matter where I went, nobody had ever heard of him. Even the police didn’t know. They tried sending me to a foster home but I left. I didn’t want to go.
“He left when I was ten. I stayed around in Sinnoh for almost five years. Gible eventually evolved into a Gabite and I started training her more competitively to try to get my name out there. Find a job. I got her into an actual Pokeball at one point so I could safely transport her around the region. I named her Stella. I was about to fight the second Gym leader in the region when I blacked out in the middle of town one day, behind some trash.
“I don’t think anyone saw me. I remember something talking to me as I floated through a void, and then I woke up in Hisui. Without Stella. Professor Laventon met me at the beach and started talking to me about all these things and asking me so many questions but I just didn’t know how to answer them. I have no idea where Stella is, if she’s okay. For all I know, she’s been stuck inside her ball for months. The last thing I remember is being in Hearthome City by the Stadium and then I just blacked out.” Akari stopped, her voice still strong. She was proud that she was able to get through the whole story without starting to cry.
“I think that’s why Arceus chose me. Not because I was really good with Pokemon or a great Trainer, but because no one would notice I was gone. I wasn’t its first choice because it was me, I was just there and convenient. I was basically a ghost kid that hadn’t died yet. If I had died, no one would even have noticed except Stella.” Her voice was starting to break, but she held fast at her tears.
Ingo and Emmet sat at the table and looked at her, both men emanating sadness. “Akari…” Ingo reached over and hugged her. Emmet was right behind his brother, taking her other side. “Poor lost soul.” They both enveloped her, their matching silver heads resting on her shoulders. She felt the tears before she realized they were there. She wrapped her arms around both of them, closing the circle. Samurott laid its head on top of hers, nuzzling the tears away from her eyes. It crooned at her quietly.
“I am Emmet. And you now live here. We are all the Subway Bosses.” His voice was muffled against her shirt.
“We won’t up and disappear on you.” Ingo paused. “At least, not knowingly. I’ve had my fill of unwarranted track changes and major delays.” Akari giggled wetly.
“That’s… all I needed to hear. Thank you…” The three stayed like that for a long time. Akari’s arms were beginning to ache by the time they separated. “There is…one other thing. I actually used a different name in Sinnoh than in Hisui. I just made Akari up. It sounded more old-timey.”
Emmet and Ingo nodded together. “Would you prefer us to call you by your original name?”
Akari considered it for a moment. “I… don’t think so. I was thinking about going back to my old name but I think I like Akari better. Akari has done better things than… the old me did.”
“I believe both Akari and before-Akari did the best they could,” Ingo atoned. “But we will happily continue to refer to your cab as Akari.”
Chandelure floated into the kitchen and made an odd shrieking sound. Ingo, Emmet, and Akari all looked up, confused. “Chandie? What’s wrong?” It floated away, beckoning with one steel arm for them all to follow. The humans and their Pokemon did, obediently, down the hall and into the twin’s bedroom.
The Sneasel egg sat where Ingo had left it two days ago, resting peacefully on the dresser surrounded by a blanket. Except now, the egg was cracked. It rustled. “The egg!” Akari whispered. “It’s hatching!” They all crowded around the egg, watching it with bated breath as it shook once. Twice. Three times.
A tiny purple claw extended out of the egg, pushing its way through the shell and effectively cleaving part of the egg in half. Another appeared moments later, allowing the egg to finally open completely. The shell crumbled away, revealing a tiny bundle of lavender fluff. It shook off the remnants of the eggshell, scratching behind it’s small feather with its claws. It stretched, little arms moving for the first time. It opened its eyes, blinking in the dark. Ingo had turned the lights off to ensure they didn’t hurt the poor thing’s eyes. It squeaked.
Akari almost cried just from how cute it was. It was so small. Its head seemed a little too big for the rest of it, its teeny little arms and legs taking up not much space. Its little claws were a lighter purple than an adult’s. Maybe it couldn’t make poison yet? Its red eyes were large, peering around in the darkness. Ingo’s eyes sparkled, glistening with new tears as he watched the kit hatch. Emmet’s grin was the widest she had seen it yet.
The kit looked between them all, confused. Ingo reached forward and petted its small head, rubbing its fur the way he’d watched Sneasler do with her kits numerous times. “Hello, little one,” he spoke softly. It grabbed onto his hand with its tiny claws, not yet sure how to wield them. “Your mother entrusted you to my care. I promise I will raise you to be the strongest you can in her memory.” The little Sneasel didn’t give any indication it knew what he was saying.
It reached up, asking to be picked up. Ingo lifted it from the remains of its egg into his arms. Emmet patted its little feather, Akari playing with its feet. It squeaked again at the ticklish sensation. “Welcome to the family.”

So as I’ve hinted at, one of my recent projects (and tbh my focus for NaNoWriMo 2020) is a Sonia/Leon fic that I’m nearing completion. So enjoy an un-edited/un-polished version of one of the scenes I had the most fun writing. WARNING: Salty exes who sleep together are salty. Minor adult content ahead.
.
.
.
Sonia laid in the gentle morning light, the gently chirping of rookidees swooping in along with the warm breeze from her open window. By all accounts it should be a perfect morning, especially considering the amount of rain they'd been having lately. Instead, she laid moodily, drumming her turquoise nails against her collarbone and frowned at he ceiling as if everything in the world was it's fault. Obviously it wasn't, it was just a way to deflect her own internal rage at herself—although she wasn't the only party involved. Her partner in crime had begun to stir, the warm hand on her stomach twitching before sliding down to her waist, pulling her closer. Soft lips pressed small kisses into her shoulder before he spoke gruffly, "you're overthinking this."
"Am I?" the red-head asked sarcastically.
Sleeping with your ex was generally frowned upon. It means you either have some unresolved tension (so you should never have broken up in the first place), have serious communication issues (which they do), or like some toxic, chemical reaction just keep coming back to each other (which means you should probably cut those strings loose). This is the third time they've ended up like this. She can already hear Nessa yelling at her (and at him) for how stupid they were. Since they'd broken up, she's seen Leon more often then when they were dating. Hell, they've slept together more, which frankly, was a little insulting.
"Mhmm," he murmured, his trimmed beard gently scratching her delicate skin.
Ignoring Leon's ministrations, Sonia continued to drum her fingers. She wasn't sure if she was mad because they had slept together, again, without talking about the obvious elephant in the room or if she was mad that she so badly wanted this to be something more than just sex. Logically she could just ask Leon. Afterall, that had been the crux of their problems. But at the same time she was in her feelings and didn't know what to do. When Leon's fingers started moving down she couldn't help but snap out, "would you stop that?"
His fingers stilled for just a second.
"No."
"You're such an annoying twat."
"You lov—"
"—Don't."
Immediately his hand stopped moving, their morning glow becoming awkward and uncomfortable. The teasing smile that he had been pressing into her skin became solemn. His hand immediately moved away from her stomach and onto her arm, rubbing the skin apologetically. She could feel its slight clamminess as his nervousness began to show.
"Listen Son, I—" he cut himself off, and she could practically hear his eyebrows furrowing. "Clearly this keeps happening for a reason and I think we should—"
Leon was abruptly cut off with the sudden slam of the door to the lab opening downstairs, Hop's cheerful voice booming, "good morning, Professor Sonia!"
They both stilled, her brain temporarily short-circuiting before she ripped the covers off, ran to the door and locked it. She whipped around, whisper-yelling at a stunned Leon, "get out of here!"
"How?" he retorted, sarcastically adding, "jump out the window?"
"Sonia?!" Hop continued to yell, footsteps scurrying up the stairs.
The ex-champion stared in shock, whispering softly, "oh, fuck me."
Sonia threw his pants at him, quickly grabbing a bra and struggled to clamp it on as she yelled back, "just a minute, Hopscotch!" She grabbed her shirt, throwing it over her head. "Had a long night, just woke up!"
Leon stopped scrambling into his clothes, staring at her deadpan. "Hopscotch?"
"You're right, the window is the best option, Dandelion."
"What?!"
"The trellis reaches the window. Should be sturdy enough for you to climb down," she spoke clinically, pushing him toward the window and he struggled against her.
"This is insane!" he whispered back, barley getting on his shirt as they wrestled their way toward the window
"Quit being such a wanker, it should hold your weight."
"And if it doesn't?"
"That's not my problem."
"Fuck you, Son." he hissed, quickly grabbing his precious snap-back and she continued to bully him over. "This isn't just my fault."
She knew that he wasn't the only one to blame. That didn't mean she wanted to hear about it. He all but barley buttoned his black skinny jeans and put on his all-white air force 1 trainers' before he swung his leg over the window sill, eyeing it nervously. She's about to give him a motivating push when he grabbed her hands.
"Sonia. I meant what I was going to say," he says lowly. She hates when he looks so determined. Another vicious reminder that it's only now that he cares, that he wants to fight for her.
"Shut up."
"Make me."
Hop's chattering loudly about his latest research ideas in the background, his voice just behind the door and she has no voice but to call out, "erm, sounds great Hop!"
"By the way, have you heard anything from Leon? He didn't come home last night and was gone in the morning. Hasn't answered his phone either. Probably got lost during his walk, that dumb bastard."
"Oh that little shit is gonna get it—"
"—Lee, please. Can you cooperate?" She hissed through her teeth, all but ripping her hands out of his grip.
He narrowed his eyes at her, but obediently swung his other leg over the edge, shimming his way onto the trellis, giving it a good shake to test its sturdiness. Before he descended down he looked over his shoulder, staring right through her with those inflamed, golden eyes she loved so much.
"This isn't over. We're talking about this later."
"Goodbye Leon."
Leon climbed about half way before jumping the rest of the way. Until then did she close her window, inhaled deeply, before walking over to her bedroom door and opening it. Hop was holding a two steaming mugs of coffee in his hands, taking in her disheveled appearance with suspicion.
"Who were you talking too?"
"That journal reviewer from Unova," she lied smoothly. "He's on my arse to finish that dumb publication despite the deadline being two months away. Was up all night reviewing the citations."
Hop, bless him, took the bait hook-line-sinker and winced, passing her a mug. "That sounds wretched. Is this what academia looks like?"
"A bunch of old, professors acting like know-it-alls?"
"Yeah, who think they're better than you?"
"Don't worry, Hop. I've dealt with more than one pig-headed man in my lifetime," she muttered, "present company excluded, of course" she quickly corrected at his crescent-fallen face.
He gave her a quick smile before resuming his idle chatter. Finally, she listened to his latest idea for a research paper as they made their way downstairs toward the lab. If only it could keep her thoughts occupied and away from Leon.

So! In an unexpected turn of events, Piers and Guzma's usually sweet and caring girlfriend is a death/heavy metal singer and she's PASSIONATE AS HELL ABOUT IT!!! Headcanons for each of them separately, please! :D (and make sure to put that "I am so turned on right now" thing in, too)
I have no idea if this is what you asked for, but here it is. I kept listening to “In this Moment” while writing for inspiration, and I just...this was fun. I wish I could sing death metal; it would be so much fun.
Guzma:
To say he was shocked was an understatement.
His S/O was pretty good at keeping it hidden for a good while, and Guzma knew they’d occasionally sneak out and do something, but he never knew what.
Still, he snuck away a lot as well, so he didn’t want to get into his S/O’s business.
Besides, his S/O was far too sweet for him and wouldn’t do anything that could hurt him, and he didn’t need to worry about them winding up in jail.
He was sure if they ever got in trouble with the law, they’d just break down crying, and Nanu would just let them off with a warning.
Finally, curiosity got the better of him one night when he heard his S/O awake and fumbling in the bathroom.
He sneaks in and sees them putting on some make-up, which oddly enough kind of changed how they looked a bit.
Their Zoroark was also out, putting on something too, and they kind of all just stared at everything.
Guzma curious about all this, “Okay, now I gotta know what the hell you’re doing.”
His S/O isn’t sure how to explain but is like, “Alright, fine, you can come with me tonight.
Guzma didn’t know what to expect, but walking into a concert hall wasn’t one of them.
He also wasn’t expecting the bouncer to just let them, though, without question, all his S/O did was nod back at Guzma, and they let him through.
His S/O told him to stay there, and about thirty minutes later, the lights dimmed.
He saw his S/O on stage, going absolutely mental with hardcore metal.
Full nine yards with screaming vocals and everything.
They looked so amazing on the stage, and he could see the passion in their eyes as they made eye contact.
He hadn’t expected the sweet and innocent S/O of his to be the lead singer in a hardcore metal band, but then again, his S/O was continually surprising him.
After the concert was over, he was dragged into the back room, where he saw his S/O who was back to their more bashful self.
He immediately pins them to the wall, “That was the hottest thing I’ve ever seen you do.”
Needless to say, his S/O had Zoroark throw a sock on their backroom so people wouldn’t disturb them because no way in hell was Guzma going to wait until they got him.
Guzma did have just a little thought of ‘I wonder if they can rap…’
Piers:
Piers knew there was something about the cute and sweet exterior of his S/O form the moment he met them.
They had initially been from the Unova region, and he didn’t know too much about them, but he did know that they were interesting.
This hunch led him to slowly getting to know them and eventually falling for them.
When he finally got around to taking them to Spikemouth, almost immediately, they were recognized by Marnie.
Piers is absolutely shocked to find out this happy-go-lucky bean they happened to have met in the wild area was a hardcore metal singer in Unova who decided to move here for unknown reasons.
They had to explain they had a stalker that got so out of hand that they left the entire region and their band in case he tried to hurt them., and kind of gave up singing so he wouldn’t find them as well.
Piers informs them that if anyone even considered coming into the region with malicious intent towards them, they wouldn’t be making it very far.
Like his S/O seemed to forget he was the second strongest gym leader in the region, and he was close to the other members in the league.
After he gets the photo of what the stalker looks like, he makes it known to everyone that if they see this mane in Galar to end him
His S/O is finally kind of at peace with knowing they were finally safe.
After Piers and his S/O have been going steady for a while, Marnie eventually asks to see a performance.
Of course, his S/O is a bit reluctant but finally agrees because they love Marnie to pieces and who could say no to that face?
Piers is excited and gets his band to help since his S/O’s band members were all in Unova still.
That night they put on the best performance ever.
Piers is kind of starstruck at seeing his S/O on stage, being so passionate as they yelled into a mic.
He also has no idea why the hell he’s so turned on by it.
As soon as the performance is over, Piers whisks his S/O away because he needs to handle some things.
Afterward, it becomes a lot more common for his S/O to put on performances again and even began making new songs alongside Piers.

Paring: Leon x Reader
Content: some sweet fluff
Hey, I really love your writing! Could you do a Leon x Reader where Leon and the reader go way back? Like he helped them catch their first Pokémon cause they were struggling. Eventually the reader moves away for a while and then comes back. Just some good ol' fashioned fluff. Hope it makes sense >.>' - anon
Notes: Oooo this one was fun to write, childhood crushes becoming romances is one of the my favorite tropes lol
Masterlist
“It’s going to take a little bit of damage, and once it does you’ll throw that pokeball and catch it!”
“Leon are you sure? I don’t wanna hurt it, I just really want a pokemon,” you reply nervously, peeking around the tree to make sure that the Rookidee you’d been keeping an eye on was still there.
“(Nickname), it’ll be fine, we’ll just catch it and I can give you a potion to heal it,” Leon assures you, handing you a newly purchased pokeball, it’s red top gleaming in the sunlight.
You purse your lips a bit, before nodding and taking the ball, grasping it in your small hands.
“Okay, when I give you the signal you’ll hop in and throw the pokeball, okay? Make sure it’s a good, mighty throw!” Leon says with a grin, before pulling his own pokeball out of the pocket of his shorts and dashing around the tree to encounter the little bird pokemon.
As soon as the pokemon sees Leon it chirps loudly and flaps its wings, attempting to look intimidating despite being mere inches tall.
With an excited yell Leon swings his arm back before launching his pokeball and after a brief flash of light a Charmander is in the grass alongside the Rookidee. The fire type lizard hops around before seeing his opponent, and obediently waits for Leon’s first instruction.
The Charmander had been in Leon’s care for a few months now, it was his starter pokemon that Professor Magnolia had gifted him upon learning of his interest in Galar’s gym challenge. He seemingly spent all of his free time bonding with and training the fire type, and their friendship was apparent to all who saw them work together.
“Charmander use ember!” Leon calls out, and his pokemon is quick to oblige, spitting out a small ball of flame and launching it at the Rookidee.
The flying type make an attempt at evading the attack but is far too slow, taking noticeable damage once the fire hits it. In retaliation it runs up to the Charmander and pecks it with its beak before scurrying back to avoid being attacked again.
Leon turns to look back at you with a little grin, and you can see just how much he loves the thrill of the battle. “(Name), c’mon, I’m sure you’ll be able to catch it now!”
Nervously you step around the tree, pokeball clutched tight in your hands. You glance over at Leon and see him beckoning you closer while his Charmander keeps its gaze on the Rookidee to make sure it doesn’t escape.
You take in a sharp breath before reeling your arm back and chucking the ball, watching as it hit the flying type atop the head and sucked it inside of the catching contraption.
One shake.
You cross your fingers on both your hands, hoping that it’ll stay caught.
A second shake.
“C’mon… c’mon,” you hear Leon whisper under his breath.
A third shake.
Both of you have your eyes focused on the ball, unable to tear your gazes away.
The sound of a lock clicking rings through the air.
“Yes!!” Leon exclaims, grabbing your hands and pulling you close, “we caught it!!”
You laugh and squeal when he managed to lift you off of the ground, swinging you around in a celebratory hug. All the while Leon’s Charmander danced around in the grass, just as happy as the two of you.
Leon sets you down, his hazel eyes bright as he looks down at you (despite the two of you being ten he was still taller than you). “Go on, go get your new pokemon,” he urges you, nudging his head in the direction of the lone pokeball on the ground.
You nod and step away from him, gentle as you lean down and pick up the ball. It jiggles around in your hand momentarily, and you bite your lip nervously as you press your finger to the button that unlocks it.
There’s a flash of light and that Rookidee you’d caught is flapping its wings excitedly, gliding in place in front of you. “Hello there,” you murmur gently, not wanting to scare your new pokemon. You hold your hands out and let it land in your palms, and it quickly makes itself at home by fluffing up its feathers and snuggling against you.
“I think it likes you,” Leon says happily, calling back his Charmander before walking next to you, “are you going to name it?”
“I dunno, I think I’ve got to get to know it better before giving it a proper name,” you hum, petting the top of it’s head gingerly before calling it back into its pokeball. “Well what now?” you ask, turning to look at Leon, “are you going to keep training?”
Leon nods excitedly, making his purple hair bounce up and down, “yea!! The gym challenge starts in a month, and I’ve got to be ready for it,” he explains, stretching his arms up, “I’m going to catch a few more pokemon and train them all up. Professor Magnolia’s already given me an endorsement to join the challenge, I just have to go and get registered. Raihan’s going to do the challenge too! I think the Hammerlocke gym leader gave him an endorsement.”
“That’s exciting,” you reply with a smile, “battling’s never really been my thing, but you’re so good at it- Raihan too. I bet you’ll be able to get to the semifinals, and when you do I’ll be watching from home!”
Leon grins hearing this, “you think so? Then I guess I’ll have to beat the champion too if you’re watching, can’t let you down after all.”
“You think you can beat the champion?”
“As soon as I this Charmander of mine is fully evolved I have no doubt I can take the champion down!”
You laugh and listen and he explains his battle strategy, but before he can give you a full presentation you hear Leon’s mother calling out from further up the road.
“Leon, it’s dinnertime! And (Name)’s family already called, it’s time to go home now!”
Leon pouts a little before turning back to look at you, “I guess I’ll have to continue this lesson another time.”
“Whatever you say, future champion,” you say with a grin, grabbing the brim of his sports cap and tugging it down, “last one at the house is a lazy Skwovet!”
“Hey!!” Leon exclaims, but you’re already gone, booking it down the road with your new pokeball in hand.
---
A smile graces your lips as you watch the gym challenge finale, the ‘Unbeatable Champion’ Leon claiming yet another victory and retaining his champion status.
The hustle and bustle of the airport around you doesn’t manage to distract you and you can’t seem to tear your eyes away from the man on the screen, wondering how he’d managed to become so handsome in the years you’d been gone.
A voice comes over the intercom, saying that boarding for your flight to Wyndon from the Galar region had begun. With a sigh you pocket your phone and stand up, grabbing your bags and boarding pass and walking towards the terminal.
You’d moved to Unova about eight years ago, roughly a year after Leon had won the Galar gym challenge and become champion. Both your parents worked for the same company and they’d gotten a job in the region, with housing covered and a phenomenal pay rate they would’ve never received in Galar.
You knew moving at the time was good for your family, but you couldn’t help being torn up when the move came. Packing up and leaving everything you’d ever known wasn’t easy- especially your best friend Leon. He’d gotten busy being champion but when you told him the news about the move he was devastated and begged you to stay. You explained to him why you couldn’t and he seemed to understand, but wanted to remain in touch.
You each promised you’d keep contact but as the years went on he became a busy champion and you moved on to focus on your own interests.
Now though, you’d gotten a job offer back in Galar. You’d studied under Professor Juniper in Unova and now Professor Magnolia had reached out to ask for your help researching a phenomenon called ‘Dynamax’; you’d even be able to live in your hometown Postwick again.
You accepted the offer without a second thought, ecstatic to go back. You mailed all your belongings ahead of time and they should’ve already arrived in Postwick, all you had to do after that was buy your plane ticket and get there.
You couldn’t be happier as you found your plane seat and got settled in, thinking about all the people you’d get to see again… thinking about Leon.
You would’ve been stupid to say you didn’t have a little crush on him as a kid, but it seems that even know as an adult that crush only persisted.
The shaking Pokeball on your belt pulls you out of your thoughts and you pat it gently, “shh, it’s okay Fe, I’ll let you out as soon as we touch down,” you murmur, attempting to calm your Corviknight before the long flight.
As soon as the plane takes off you aimlessly scroll through the channels for the inflight television, pausing when you see Leon giving a live interview after the championship match, looking as happy and vibrant as ever.
You turn on the captions to try and read what he’s saying, and as soon as you do so he says something about the future looking bright, and you can’t help but smile and wholeheartedly agree.
---
“It’s a bit stupid that they don’t allow bigger pokemon to be loose when riding the train, I’m sure there’d be enough room for you,” you mutter as you step out of the Wedgehurst station, breathing in the fresh countryside air.
You grab the pokeball on your belt and click the button, letting a very restless Corviknight out to stretch its wings. There’s a loud caw in your ears as Fe sniffs the air and looks around, before getting a rather excited look in its eyes as it shakes its tail.
“You recognize you’re home, buddy? C’mon, if we walk up that way I can show you the route I caught you on,” you say with a grin, putting the empty pokeball on your belt and grabbing your luggage.
Your Corviknight follows behind you, and people easily part to let you walk by when the see the giant metal bird you call your partner. As you head towards the road that’ll take you right to Postwick, you overhear a group of people talking outside one of the shops:
“Did you watch Leon’s battle earlier?” “I sure did, that was amazing! How his Charizard managed to take down that Gyrados, I’ll never understand. He’s here isn’t he?”
“Yea, visiting his family after the match, I saw him leaving the train stop about an hour ago.”
You feel a smile tug at your lips upon hearing this and suddenly you’re walking at a faster pace, and the only reason you’re not sprinting is because you’re carrying two luggage bags.
Within minutes you find the house you’ll be staying in, it’s just down the road from your childhood home as well. You leave your bags behind and without really thinking you’re running up the dirt road, Fe having to fly to keep up with you as you head straight to Leon’s house.
Once you get to the door you’re panting, and Fe caws impatiently, wondering what the hell you’re up to.
Catching your breath, you fix your composure before raising a hand, knocking on the door three times.
You hear some voices inside, muffled so you can’t hear who’s saying what. You step back as a lock gets fiddled with, and you feel your heart stop when you find yourself staring into a pair of hazel eyes.
Leon, who’s just as taken aback as you are, struggles to find words as a grin starts to appear on his face. “... (Nickname)?”
You’re not able to stop yourself when you jump up into his arms, wrapping your arms around his neck and giving him the tightest hug you were capable of. Tears pricked your eyes when he wrapped his arms around your torso, hugging you back just a tight.
“... hey Lee, who’s that?”
The two of you separate and you glance behind Lee to see a young boy at the bottom of a staircase, head tilted in slight confusion as he stared at you.
It takes a moment to click in your mind, but you gasp when you realize who it is. “Hop??” you ask with a grin, stepping away from Leon to get a better look at his younger brother, “the last time I saw you you’d just starting learning how to read and write, but look at you now!”
Hop seems to piece together the puzzle in his head as well, since he jumps back and his eyes go wide, “(Name)? Oh it’s been ages! I thought you’d never come back, especially with how Lee always talked about wishing you were still around-”
He claps a hand over his mouth, realizing he’d said something he shouldn’t have. You look back over at Leon to see a red blush on his cheeks and he quickly tries to change the subject. “H-hey, (Name), who’s this?”
He points outside towards Fe and you smile, stepping back outside and wrapping your arms around the bird pokemon, who still seems a bit annoyed by the detour. “Oh, c’mon Leon, don’t tell me you can’t recognize my first pokemon,” you say with a grin, making the champion gasp.
“This is that Rookidee?” he asks, gingerly lifting a hand to pet Fe’s beak. You’re almost surprised when Fe doesn’t jut back, normally nobody except you is allowed to touch them.
You nod, “oh yes, this is that same Rookidee, just fully evolved, and peeved because I’m here chatting instead of getting food for the two of us.”
“Oh! Mum’s cooking, you should stay for dinner! I’m sure she wouldn’t mind the company, and Leon probably has tons he wants to tell you,” Hop suggests, and you snicker a little upon seeing Leon bury his face in his hands in embarrassment.
---
The radio on the counter top plays some tunes as you go around your new house, sweeping the floor and moving furniture around, trying to find a place for all the items you’d brought. The windows are open letting in a cool breeze and above the music you could hear the distant chitters and chirps of various pokemon.
A Skwovet hops in through the window in search of food, but Fe merely has to stare it down and caw aggressively once to send it running out again. You laugh at the scene, but a knock at the door distracts you.
You set down your broom and head towards the front door, unlocking it. You’re not too surprised when you see Leon standing there, the two of you had been spending quite a lot of time together when you weren’t busy moving in and he wasn’t busy with champion duties.
What did surprise you, however, was the small bouquet of flowers in his hands.
“(Name), you and I are childhood friends, we’ve known each other for as long as I can remember. You’re one of the most fascinating people I know and I am so lucky to have the honor of knowing your personally. You’re talented and smart and a joy to be around, but I find that my feelings have become more than just friendly ones. Would you… possibly like to go on a date with me?”
He says all of this carefully, as though cautiously picking out his words. His typical confident demeanor was subdued and you could tell that this was something he was taking incredibly seriously.
You smile softly as you reach forward, taking the flowers from his hands. “Leon, I’d absolutely love to… on one condition.”
He lights up at this, but gives you a confused look, “condition?”
“Do something about that awful cape you wear as part of your uniform.”
He’s taken aback and laughs, but shakes his head, “oh no, that is the one thing that is off the table, the cape stays. And it is not awful, mind you.”
You giggle as you shrug your shoulders, “alright alright, you drive a hard bargain, but I suppose I’ll still agree to go on this one date.”
“Will it only be one?” he asks with a bit of sly smile.
“No, probably not. I think there will probably be many many more after this one,” you muse, giving him a wink.
“So I suppose I was right when I said the future looked bright in that interview last week.”
“Yes, yes you were,” you grin, leaning up to kiss him on the cheek sweetly.

random facts about the cast!
Yay
(Potential Madoka Magica spoilers here!) -Melanie has no idea how to cook so she pretty much just lives off of fast food. Because of this she’s kinda chunky but she doesn’t worry about it to much since witch hunting keeps her from gaining too much weight.
-When around Melanie, N wears gloves to hide the scars on his hands. He doesn’t want to worry her 🥺 (he hasn’t intentionally hurt himself since he was 13 due to his sister’s wish)
-Bianca is a Cheren simp. No seriously she absolutely loves Cheren. I love Dualrivalshipping, alright?
-Bianca and Cheren don’t have designs yet, but I want their designs to parallel each other. I want Cheren’s design to have a bit of a black theme, but I’m not sure how to do that without him looking edgy. Bianca is going to have a white theme. This is because of their names mean Black and White.
-N’s castle isn’t at the Pokémon league in this AU, but rather on the outskirts of Castelia City. But it’s hidden out of sight in a forest which is why very few people know of its existence.
-Vanaleey is an anagram of Leavanny. This is because it is the witch form of Burgh, and Burgh’s main Pokémon is Leavanny.
-the Team Plasma Grunt’s witch form being named “Shiro” comes from the Japanese word for white. I chose this because Reshiram’s name comes from Shiro, and this is in the Pokémon White canon which means that N is eventually going to get Reshiram.
-Melanie will eventually help N learn that he doesn’t have to be afraid anymore, and will help him overcome his unhealthy habits that he does as a result of his PTSD. N has severe food anxiety and is always afraid that his food is going to be taken from him, so he eats very quickly to make sure nobody will be able to take it. This is one problem Melanie helps him with.
-Theres characters other than Melanie, N, Bianca, and Cheren, I’m just trying to figure out which characters to include and what their wishes would be. Feel free to give me suggestions for designs and characters to include! They don’t have to be from Unova, as I plan on releasing stories about the other regions too.
-Melanie doesn’t know this, but her powers are actually caused by love. Her love for Pokémon and people is very strong, and it’s what makes her able to understand Pokémon: because she loves them so much. When battling alongside others she’s more powerful, as she’s motivated to protect them. The closer she is to the people she’s teaming up with, the stronger she is. This is why her soul gem is heart shaped, because of her powers are associated with love. (Platonic love)
-I imagine that when N first saw his magical form he was concerned what Ghetsis would think but he was totally chill with it and said N is free to express himself however he wants. N secretly liked “girly” stuff since he was young and he was happy to be able to wear something pretty without being criticized for it.
-Melanie loves to look cute and as soon as she saw her magical form she screamed with happiness because of how cute it is.
-Cheren and Bianca moved to Castelia City due to there being many witches there. Most of the story will take place in Castelia City. Cheren and Bianca are doing the gym challenge, but they’re taking a break from it in order to protect people.
-Melanie had a different partner back in Alola, but they ended up dying. I haven't decided who this partner is yet, or even what their gender is, so feel free to give me suggestions.
-N and Melanie both know the truth about soul gems, but they don’t know the truth about witches. N learns the truth about them in part 3 of the story, which makes him feel a bit guilty for killing them, but at the same time he doesn’t mind since he feels like he’s saving them by ending the witch’s suffering (as we all know, being Meguca is suffering).
-idk why I decided to make Melanie be a character in this... okay I just wanted to make her a Meguca design and decided “okay she’ll be friends with N because they’d get along well”. I kinda like them together, but the problem is N is usually 20+ years old, but in this AU he’s 17. I’m concerned people will say I’m encouraging p/dophelia if I ship them. But N being aged down wasn't for shipping purposes, it was to fit in with the Madoka universe. Would it be okay if I shipped them? Melanie is a bit older in this AU, too (only 16, since I’m turning 16 later this month).
Uhh yeah that’s it for now~ I’m absolutely in love with this AU and I really enjoy talking about it!
Thanks for reading!

[part 1] | [part 2] | [part 3] | [part 4] | [part 5]
Tumblr media
Hau is sure something is going on with Gladion and Moon.
He can't quite say what it is, but there's an itch under his nose. He knows it's probably nothing, but they're together more often than ever, and while these two weeks of vacation had been spent mostly in togetherness, Hau has spent most of these two days with Lillie alone while Gladion and Moon 'trained' for 'something very important'.
Gladion is known for being lackluster with words, but Moon is just suspiciously dismissive. Something is off.
"What the hell do I know? Those two have always been close. Is this why you called me? I'm painting my nails right now."
Plumeria sounds irritated on the phone, but Hau doesn't let that deter him. Lillie fiddles with her sundress, seated right beside him on her bed. "You spend lots of time with Moon at the Battle Tree, right? I bet she's told you somethin'."
"I don't know a darn thing, kid. I bet she's got better things to do than fuss over some boy." Plumeria snickers. "Do you really think something's going on with those two?"
Hau trades looks with Lillie, who sighs. "They have been awfully busy with each other, and I'm certain Moon had a hickey on her neck yesterday."
"Yeeeeah, after the disco night. That was a weird night."
"Why? What happened?"
Hau wags his eyebrows, teasing. "Aw, so you are interested!"
"If Moon's gonna start losing battles because she's smitten, I might as well know why." Something slams shut at the other end of the line. "Fine. Tell me the details."
Hau puts her on loudspeaker. "Can you hear me?"
"Clear as day."
Lillie bites her lip. "So… they usually spend lots of time together, but it's unusual for them to go out on their own without us. I don't think they're avoiding spending time with us, right?"
Hau rubs her shoulder reassuringly. "Told ya' it wasn't that."
"Make it quick, you two. No lovey-dovey stuff allowed."
Hau gulps, laughing nervously. "Right. So we think they might have a thing going on. Lillie's right about the hickey– she had a pretty bad bruise, and when I asked, she just said she made out with some guy at the disco, but that's bullshit. She's not into that kind of stuff."
"So you think it's Gladion who's givin' her the hickeys?"
"Kinda weird to think about– no, kinda gross to think about, those two makin' out, but it's what makes the most sense."Hau grins. "Something's going on with them, and we gotta figure out what it is. They're not gonna tell us, so we should find out on our own."
Lillie fiddles with her thumbs. "But… why are we so sure they have feelings for each other, to begin with? I always thought they were just, um, very good friends."
"I mean, I'm surprised you didn't know, but the kid's always liked Moon. Like, even before she became the Champion."
Lillie gasps scandalously as Hau erupts into laughter. "I knew it!"
The blonde pulls the phone from Hau, shaking. "Really? How do you know such a thing!?"
"It was kinda obvious when you saw them together, and it's not like Gladion's that hard to read, considering he's a rock. The moment he gets soft and feelsy, it's very obvious." Plumeria laughs, half knowing, half happy. "It's weird that you didn't notice, Lillie. It's not like Moon makes herself hard to read either."
"I– I always had a hunch, but she always said he was just a friend, nothing else," Lillie says. "And Gladion… I can't say I didn't notice, but I also thought he was simply fond of her."
"Guess hickeys are his way of giving hugs now." Hau can hear the smirk in her voice. "All that aside, I doubt they'd be that dumb to get touchy with each other in a vacation. Or go on dates, having you two around. They're not that inconsiderate."
"What's up with them, then?" Hau asks, taking the phone back from Lillie. "I don't wanna be nosy, but they're hiding something from us. It's getting annoying."
Lillie hums in thought. "They might be genuinely busy with battles, even if we went on vacation so Moon would take her mind off that. Clair and Lance didn't help last week, and Gladion likes battling her a bit too much."
"You can always ask them right away, y'know– that way you wouldn't have to call me while I do my nails."
Hau ignores her in favor of an idea. "We can always, um, follow them around a bit? And keep an eye on' em. If they see us, we can say we're walkin' around."
At the other end of the line, Plumeria sighs. "That's an awful idea, kid."
But Lillie disagrees, "It might not be. I'm also curious, and come to think of it, we have done very little sight-seeing this week. We can make up for that."
Hau and Lillie exchange pleased sly grins, giggling to themselves. Plumeria groans. "Now that you two are scheming, can I hang up? My battery's running low."
"Sure, but…" Lillie fishes the phone from Hau's hand. "One last thing… can I see your nails, please? I want to buy some nail polish and I need ideas."
"Sure."
Hau and Lillie decide to bide their time and wait patiently.
He's tasked with looking out for Gladion, whereas Lillie does the same for Moon. They're not exactly meddling, but they're trying to wiggle their way into the situation as subtly as possible.
As much as they're trying, it doesn't seem like they're doing much. They talk and act as they always have– sans the few moments Hau notices Glaidon's touch lingers more on Moon than usual, that he looks at her very often and always does so with a little smile.
Plumeria already confirmed he's probably head over heels for her, but Hau is only noticing it now, so he does what he does best: tease him about it.
As they walk to their bedrooms after a day out at the beach, having left the girls at the bar, Hau grins. "So… what's up with you and Moon?"
Gladion jolts. Barely. But he does. "What do you mean?"
"You two are looking very cute lately. Like, really cute." He doesn't miss how Gladion's key nearly falls off his shaky fist, and his cheeks grow rosy. "Woah. I knew you had a thing for her, but not that badly."
The blond grunts and spins towards Hau, frowning as menacingly as Hau knows he can muster. "Absolutely nothing is going on between us. Nothing. I'm just helping her build a new team before she goes back to the League."
Hau arches an eyebrow. Moon has never asked anyone for help with training her Pokémon. Sounds like bullshit. "Uh-huh. Why, though?"
"Um, she's been out of it for more than a week and she's feeling a little antsy about it. She doesn't want to get rusty."
"Dude, Moon's been out of the League for weeks before. Remember Unova? She's never wanted any help with-"
Gladion squares his jaw and jams his key into the lock, opening it with force. "That– That's none of my business. Ask her if you're so curious, damn it!"
And the door swings shut again.
So that was something.
The following day, Moon explains that she'd be out with Glaidon training in a new Kanto-style gym that's opened in Heahea City. Hau and Lillie take that as their cue to follow them, so clad in pamelas and sunglasses they went, trailing after the pair.
They don't immediately head to the gym, and that rings alarms in Hau's head. As they spy on the two from a corner to the street, he gasps. "He wants to hold her hand. He's moving it a lot."
Lillie sighs. "The port is crowded. I'm losing sight of them. Where are they going, really?"
Hau grins. "Only one way to find out!"
With wide grins, they tiptoe across the street and further into the crowd. Hau can still see Gladion's baseball cap and Moon's oversized pamela, walking into an ice cream parlor that Hau loves with all his heart.
A few minutes later, they happily walk out of the parlor. Moon is laughing at something Gladion just said, and he looks as bothered as ever. Nothing is out of the ordinary here, making Hau question why they'd go out on their own if they're not on a date or battling.
They sit down on a bench near the sandline. Gladion looks upset. Genuinely so.
"Do you think they had an argument and are trying to make up?"
Hau turns to Lillie. "Did they look angry at each other this morning? Because they didn't to me."
The duo watch Moon and Gladion for a few minutes. Nothing happens, and after a while, Hau gets bored and distracted. They should have tagged along– it would surely be more fun than watching them have fun.
Lillie gasps. She points forward and leans closer to Hau. "Look, they're very close! Are they going to kiss?"
"No way," Hau squints as Moon scoots closer, and he can see a smirk, he thinks, but-
Someone crashes with Hau and makes him fall to the ground face first. The man runs past him and Lillie, shouting an apology. Lillie hurries to help Hau off the ground with a concerned frown. "Goodness, are you okay?"
Hau groans, rubbing his arm. "Just a scratch. People are always in a hurry here."
Lillie offers him a hand and helps him get up. Her touch lingers a second more than necessary, rubbing his knuckles with her thumb before letting go.
He rolls his shoulder and turns back to the bench, only to find it's absolutely empty.
He gets up from his hiding spot, gaping in indignation. "Dude, they're gone! Where did those two run off to?"
Lillie gasps and rushes past Hau to the bench, looking all around the port. They're nowhere to be seen– not at the juice bar, the shops at the other side of the road or anywhere nearby. She sighs, playing with the hems of her shirt. "Do you think they saw us and ran off somewhere?"
Hau shakes his head. "I doubt they saw us, but where did they even go? I can't see them anywhere."
The blonde turns to Hau, shaking her head. "Let's forget about this. I think we lost them, and it's been enough stalking for today."
Hau is still irritated, though. Where had those two ran off to? They looked like they were about to kiss. Had that been just his imagination?
He turns to Lillie, who is just as confused as he is, and grabs her wrist, leading her across the road. "C'mon, let's get ice cream. My treat."
The next day, the four of them have breakfast. They plan their day, which they'll spend together for once. Moon offers heading to Lush Jungle to watch the Pikipek and maybe play with the Comfey, an idea that Lillie finds cute– so much so they start gushing about it.
Only Hau notices how fondly Gladion is watching Moon, sitting very close to her. He clears his throat.
"Oh, forgot to tell you two!" Hau grins, one corner higher than the other. "We saw you the other day."
Moon chokes with her lemonade and Gladion tenses up. Lillie's eyes widen, just as troubled, and the Kahuna is sure he's hit a juicy spot. Gladion grabs Moon's lemonade and takes a generous chug while Moon laughs. "Oh, you did?"
"We were takin' a walk around the port zone and we saw you there. Did you like that gym you went to? You gotta take us there sometime!"
Hau expects Moon to panic, because she sucks at lying and he doesn't expect them to have gone to the gym. Moon and Gladion trade looks, and she smiles sweetly. "It was lots of fun. A few trainers there nearly beat me, and Gladion-"
He slaps a hand on her mouth with a shaky smirk. "No need to tell them about how I did to brag about your victories, Champion."
Moon removes his hand and they start bickering like they always do, and the only thing Hau finds suspicious in the situation is that everything is as normal as can be. They're arguing about the smallest of things at the loudest of voices, and he's sure a battle will ensue within the next 5 minutes.
Lillie scoots closer, whispering, "I suppose it was nothing, then? Could we have assumed wrong?"
Hau hums. He hasn't seen much suspicious activity he can prove, and the image of them almost kissing at that bench could have been a mirage. Maybe they're just on very friendly and affectionate terms now, and that hickey on Moon's neck that day might have come from some other dude.
He doesn't want to think Moon is hooking up with other dudes when Gladion is head over heels for her, though– but it's her life.
Hau takes a sip of his Tapu Cocoa. "We might have, yeah."
The following day is the day they go back to their usual busy lives. Moon is due at the League, Hau has Kahuna duties to look after, Gladion as a company to run and Lillie has a thousand things to do at the Aether Conservation area.
They must catch their ferry back to Melemele at ten o'clock, they've agreed to meet at the lobby in five minutes and Gladion and Moon are nowhere to be seen.
Lillie looks at her watch with a grimace. "They're usually the first ones to be here. What could be holding them up?"
Hau sighs. "Moon texted me saying her shower wasn't working properly so she's using Glaidon's while he packs his stuff."
The blonde smiles nervously. "They're taking a little too long, though. Silvally must be chewing on Glaidon's clothes again."
Hau groans. "Man, I woke up early to be here on time and I bet they're gonna be late. Let's go check on them. I got Gladion's key with me."
They leave their suitcases at the lobby and head to Gladion's bedroom. They speculate on the ways they'll have to peel Silvally off Gladion's suitcase, how Moon might have her own clothes destroyed by the beast and how irritated Gladion will be about going shopping with Moon in compensation for the damage.
Hau slides the key and the door clicks open.
And their hearts leap out their throats as Moon and Gladion gasp, stopping their activities to look at the intruders with blatant shame.
Moon is lying under Gladion, hair wet and shirt ridden up her stomach. Gladion's hands are in her hair and waist, and Moon is bunching the front of Gladion's half-undone button up dress shirt.
Lillie gasps.
Moon laughs nervously as Gladion groans in defeat and buries his face in Moon's neck. "Um, I can explain. We were, um…"
Words fail her. Gladion mumbles a curse against Moon's shoulder and Hau's mind finally catches up with what's going on.
"Dude, what in the world did we miss here?"

SO THAT POKEMON AU. I know we've already discussed ships but. I'm a diehard fan of marvin/jackie and I also remember you mentioning something about poly boys??? Anyway if you would like a prompt, how about Jackie and Marvin doing a double battle or smth where they work together. Maybe Jackie is trying to get Marvin to start training but Marvin can do like 1/2 pushups / murder-schmurder
So like, I started this when i got this like a week ago and then I forgot about it so if the first half is infinitely better than the second half then I’m sorry. @murder-schmurder
Marvin was never a very shy or easily embarrassed person, but there’s something particularly intimidating about walking into a building of half dressed people and Pokémon who all have the strength to beat you in a fight. Sure, Marvin had a three headed dragon just chilling in their pocket, but they weren’t actually trained for battle.
When Marvin stepped into the Gym all eyes were on them, which is usually what they want, but here it felt strangely suffocating. Something about these types of gyms always made Marvin feel weird.
Maybe it was because it was the one thing Marvin just couldn’t wrap their head around. I mean, when you’re best friends with the ex-champion of the region and dating a gym leader, people expect you to be good at Poké battles, but they just couldn’t see the appeal.
Marvin walked across the building, trying to keep his head up and forward. Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared, but didn’t move. Even the ones that would challenge anyone they saw just watched.
All of the regulars had heard about the relationship between Jackie Griffin and Marvin Phoenix, but this was the first time any of them had actually seen Marvin themselves here.
Marvin simply wanted to spend time with Jackie before he had to leave to do a performance all the way in Unova, and then Kalos. They’d like to spend the little time they have here with someone they care about. Preferably somewhere that wasn’t a hundred degrees celsius and smelled like sweat and body odor.
They made it to the arena right as a battle was going on. Jackie and his Roseraid were up against a trainer’s Gardevoir. Marvin subconsciously put his hand around his Gardivor’s ball and took a seat in the audience.
A few poison stings and the trainer’s Gardevoir was out. The crowd cheered as Jackie shook the trainers hand and offered them a handful of revives. Then the crowd cleared out.
“Marvin!” Jackie called out happily. “I thought I saw you.”
The two share a hug while the Roseraid rolls her eyes. As much as she loved Jackie, a Pokémon can never help but hold a grudge against the trainer that gave them away.
“It’s nice to see you!” Marvin said, giving him a kiss and Roseraid an affectionate smile.
“What are you doing here? I thought you were getting ready for that trip of yours.”
“All the preparations are done. I just wanted to spend some time with you before I left.”
Jackie couldn’t help the blush creeping onto his cheeks. “You’re a sweetheart.”
“I was curious if you wanted to go out to eat with me soon. I thought it would be nice to have a taste of home before I’m shipped off to a whole new region.”
Jackie looks at his wrist before remembering that he doesn’t wear a watch and looks up at the wall clock. “I’m not supposed to leave the gym for another few hours… Then again, what are they gonna do? Fire me?”
Marvin giggled. “So, you’re coming with me?”
“Yeah, let me just change clothes real quick.” He returned Roseraid to her ball and paused, his eyes lighting up. “Hey! What if we have a battle!?”
  “What?”
“If you want we could do a double battle, and work together!”
“I’m afraid I’m lost. Double battle?”
“Okay, let me explain.” Jackie pauses. “So you know that show you put on with Holly Flint back in Hoenn? You two used your Pokémon, as well as your own skills together to put on a great show. It’s kinda like that, but instead of using your Pokémon to look cool together, you use them to beat up another pair of Pokémon.”
“Well, I’ve never been good at the whole battling thing.”
“That’s okay! I just thought it might be fun to do something like that with you. We don’t have to though.” Jackie rubs the back of his neck.
Seeing that timid look on Jackie’s face, made Marvin’s heart twist. They sigh. “Of course I wanna do this with you.”
Jackie beamed and called one of the fellow gym members into the arena. “We’ll have a simple two on two.”
The trainer sends out a tough looking Salamence and an equally intimidating Stoutland.
Marvin fidgeted with the Pokéballs before finally throwing out their Florges alongside Jackie’s Lucario.
At this point the author gets tired of writing because looking up random moves and writing them down and describing a Pokémon battle is not fun to write or read. Just imagine an epic battle here.
Marvin panted, their face red with excitement. “That was awesome.”
The trainer carefully pet the weakened Salamence before returning them to their ball. “For you I guess.”
“Don’t be a sore loser.” Jackie said, handing them a revive.
“I can’t believe I won my very first double battle!” Marvin said, hugging Jackie tightly. “–I mean, we won of course.”
“No, I think that was all you.”
“Don’t be modest!” They shove him lightly.
“I’m not! Lucario got knocked out by a Stoutland!” Jackie said as if he hadn’t purposefully gotten Lucario knocked out. “You did great!”
“Oh, shut up, let’s hurry up and go out to eat.”

Ash doesn’t know exactly what to say or how to say it. He knows he is still grounded for staying out late, for the impromptu purple hair, his brash personality that worried Professor Kukui. He knows he’s been a bit much to handle. He knows all of this. But this day, something about it means so much to him. He’s never gotten to experience it except for a few times in his life. He can’t remember those times. He wants the other to know just how much this means to him. Because it does—even if he gripes and complains, or breaks rules.
Ash runs fingers through the purple mess. In his best writing, he presses his pen to paper and takes a breath before starting to write.
Professor Kukui,
Sorry if I don’t know how to write this letter. I’m not the best at this sort of thing. At school in Kanto I was never the best at essays or school or any of that. Sorry if I make spelling errors. I’m not the best at that sort of thing…heh, Pokemon Masters don’t really need to know spelling do they?
I know I’m not your kid. I know that you’re not my dad by blood and I’m probably just some boarder to you and stuff. I remember Mallow and Lana talking about us being an Alolan Family and I like that.
Er, what I mean to say is, Happy Father’s Day!
Happy Father’s Day to the best kind-of-dad I’ve ever had. I never ever thought in my wildest dreams that I would be able to celebrate this day again. When my dad left when I was three, I didn’t think I’d ever have a dad again. But then I came to Alola and you took me in and it’s been so awesome! You’re the greatest dad I could ever have dreamt up!
I don’t remember him much, but Mama says that he was kind of a workaholic and stuff. He liked pokemon and training but he also really liked me doing safer things like beauty pageants and pokemon coordinating. He wasn’t a very hands on type of dad.
You are the exact opposite of him. You’re kind and patient and you don’t seem to get frustrated at me easily. You don’t mind getting dirty and doing things like playing on the beach or doing pokemon battles. You teach me stuff that I didn’t know about and stuff that Mama wasn’t very sure about. You don’t laugh at me for dumb stuff like not liking to public speak, or getting upset because I didn’t do that dumb report on father’s day and wanted the zero because I was scared to tell you. Instead you took me home and we got to sit on the couch and watch tv all day.
I really like the nights when we would be under blankets and watch tv or you and I would do stuff like I imagine normal dads do. Even going to the market is super duper fun together, even if I sometimes run off or get distracted. There’s just so much to see in Alola!
You also never ever laughed at the way I do things. I’ve been all over the place but Mama instilled a whole bunch of Kanto in me.  It’s hard to break when I come to places like Unova and Alola where it’s a culture shock and I get looked at for certain behaviors.
Um..anyways, I’ve been meaning to ask this for a long time. I know I’m not your son and that you and Professor Burnet are having a real baby and stuff, but I was wondering if it’d be okay if I called you Chichi? Chichi means dad or daddy in kantonese and again I know we’re not really related but family isn’t always about blood, right?
I also wanna say that I’m really sorry for going out and going night swimming and making you worry like that. Heh, sometimes I forget that I’m not traveling and that I can’t just stay up all night or go out and train whenever. I can’t promise it won’t happen again because that’s how things happen with me…
I just wanna thank you for making Alola feel like a second home to me. I want to thank you for making me feel so welcome and taking care of me and being the best chichi that I could have possibly wanted. I hope you have a really good father’s day, Professor. I love you.
Love,
Ashton Satoshi Ketchum
Ash signs his full name. He doesn’t know as to why he does, he just does. It feels like a formal letter is supposed to. He then folds the note in half and places it with the other gifts. Burnet had found a picture taken just days after Ash’s win. Both were decked out in their Alola best and she had finally managed to get a picture where it was just the two of them. Kukui had his hands on Ash’s shoulders and the two were grinning so wide, it was as if their smiles would break their faces in half.  The other picture, Ash isn’t sure just why Burnet took it. It was of him and Professor Kukui. He was sleeping on the couch in some pajamas, hair messy and curled next to Professor Kukui. Professor Kukui was resting as well, with hair spilling from his bun as a tired smile looks at his sleeping tenant. Ash also included a book written by Professor Oak on pokemon moves.
Nervously, Ash stands away from where he placed the gift and watches cautiously for the other to receive his gift. His mind flashes as he awaits the response.  He’s hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.
He never imagined that he’d end up boarding that amazing Torracat trainer he met in the forest all those years ago, or that the very kid who inspired his dream of creating a Pokemon League would not only help him fulfill that dream, but become the first Champion of that league. Kukui felt nothing but pride for how far Ash had come since he first visited Alola, and while Ash was still just a kid, Kukui undoubtedly looked up to him. He never would have made it this far without Ash, and the day of their battle - the rush of excitement that filled him with every command given to the Pokemon and the feeling of pure joy as he looked out to the cheering audience, was one of the best days of his life.
But even with as much as they’d gone through together, as much as Kukui came to care about Ash like a son, Ash wasn’t his son. Not really, not by blood, and Kukui had to keep reminding himself of that. The day Ash went back home to Kanto had been hard, and when Burnet cried at the airport Kukui had struggled to hold back his own tears. That pain… It truly felt like he was saying goodbye to his son, even if they weren’t related by blood.
So as he reads through the letter Ash wrote him for Father’s Day - a holiday he never expected Ash to celebrate - tears fill his eyes, blurring the words on the paper until he lifts a hand to wipe them away. After he finishes reading he sets the letter down with his gifts on the table; He’d frame the photos and put them in his lab later.
“Ash,” his voice breaks as he turns to face the boy, as if he’s going to break down crying at any moment, but there’s a huge smile on his face. He takes a moment to regain his composure, and then pulls Ash into a hug. “When your mother asked me if you could stay at my house while you were in Alola, I was happy to help out, but I never imagined how much fun it would be having you around. I know I’m supposed to be your teacher, but you’ve taught me tons of things too. I’m grateful that you decided to stay here, and even more grateful that I’ve managed to help you just as much as you’ve helped me. And just because we have another child on the way, don’t think for a second that it makes you any less important to us.”
He pulls away, glancing at Burnet, who nods in agreement before Kukui continues. “So if you want to call me Chichi, I’m perfectly fine with it. It’s like Lana’s always saying, we’re you’re Alolan family, and that will never change. No matter how big our family gets, or how far from Alola you travel, if you ever need a father, I’m here for you.”

“Jewel of the Seven Pokemon!” Chapter I
Tumblr media
I’ve had the basic idea for this fic for over a year. It’s one part Fright Night (1985), one part Bram Stoker book, and one part standard BW episode! (And a little bit of Pokeshipping thrown in, because it’s me.)
With any luck, I’ll get this finished within the month of October, with the finale published on Halloween. That may prove unrealistic, but in any event, do enjoy the first entry in my first chaptered Pokefic!
(Also available on FF.Net and AO3)
---
“Joy!” Cilan cried. “Exquisite! Rapture!”
“Does he have to celebrate out loud?” Iris asked dryly. Ash had the feeling she was talking to herself, so he didn’t bother to answer. He was pretty excited himself – the detour back to Virbank City wasn’t something he’d been crazy about at first, but when Cilan told them that they could get into one of the real, working film studios, Ash was all for it. The studio was even one Ash had heard about growing up in Kanto – Worldwide Pictures, one of the biggest movie companies in the world, with a backlot tour that showed off all sorts of famous sets and live shows! Ash could still remember the big, glossy magazine his mom had shown him, loaded with photos of the tour. The linked-up tram cars, the Little Kalos set, the robot Sharpedo; it had all been there.
It wasn’t here now. As soon as they’d arrived, a nervous-looking kid in glasses was out by the gate, explaining to a disappointed crowd that the trams were down for repairs, and that the usual tour wouldn’t be possible.
“B-b-but don’t worry!” she stammered. “T-to make up f-f-for it, w-we’re offering w-walking tours! As long as you follow the y-yellow lines on the ground…”
“WALKING TOURS!?” Cilan threw himself at the attendant. “Do you mean to tell me that we can freely roam one of the most storied film studios in history!?”
“Y-yes – well, you can’t go just anywhere, but –”
But that was all Cilan had needed. He whisked Ash and Iris along into line, nearly tore the pack off Ash’s back looking for the money for tickets, and now led their way through the backlot of Worldwide Pictures on an absolutely beautiful day. It was cool but not cold, the sun was bright, the studio lot was full of excited fans following the yellow lines in small groups, and every now and again, they caught a glimpse of a costumed actor or camera crane being rushed inside one of the huge stages. Cilan kept up a running commentary on everything they passed. Ash understood about half of it.
“Do you see it, Ash?” said Cilan, throwing an arm around Ash as he pointed to a long tan building with a curved blue roof and open doors. “That is Stage 28. It was the first soundstage built in this region, nearly a hundred years ago!”
“Wow…it’s that old?” asked Ash. Movies weren’t something he usually thought about as having been around for that long. I don’t think I’ve even seen any movies older than my mom…
“Ash, Worldwide Pictures is the oldest of the major film companies in Unova!” said Cilan. “It was an innovator of the early days of cinema, the first to relocate to Virbank City from the east, and during the Golden Age of Virbank, it was the studio for mystery, thriller, and horror pictures.”
“Really? Awesome!” It had been forever since Ash had seen a horror movie. The last one was back in Sinnoh, the really weird Alto Marian one with all the bright colors that Dawn thought was so scary that –
A loud scream came from inside Stage 28, sending shivers down Ash’s spine and a frizz through Pikachu’s tail. “Ah,” said Cilan. “It seems such a film is under production as we speak!”
“You think?” asked Ash. Even with the doors open, it was hard to see anything inside the stage, and other than the scream, Ash couldn’t hear anything but a general busy murmur. And when the scream came again, it didn’t sound like something from a horror movie. It sounded excited.
At a third scream, Pikachu perked up. His left ear twitched, and he started to sniff the air. “Hmmm? What’s up, Pikachu?” Ash asked. Pikachu hopped off his shoulder and scampered inside Stage 28. The yellow lines on the ground marked the stage as OK to enter, so Ash didn’t think twice about following.
When his eyes adjusted from the bright sun outside, he saw a massive set, an old-fashioned opera house with balconies, painted backdrops, gold decoration on red walls, and a huge brass chandelier. There was a film crew up on the opera stage, huddled around the camera as they quietly reviewed a script. The bigger crowd was in the seats, as a well-dressed man talked about the set – how it was almost as old as the soundstage itself, that it was originally made for some old movie based on an even older Kalosene book (Le fantôme de la tour Lumiose, or something like that – Ash couldn’t really understand it) and all the films it had been used in.
Pikachu sat on the armrest of one of the chairs in the row nearest to the stage doors, still sniffing. Ash wanted to help him find whatever it was he was looking for, but Ash couldn’t smell anything strange. He couldn’t really see anybody that well either; except for the guide, everyone had their backs to the door.
“…And three years later,” the guide was saying, “this set was used for the theatre scene in Blasko – The Un-dead.”
A member of the crowd jumped up. “OOH! That one’s my favorite!”
It was the same voice that had screamed earlier. Ash was right – it was excited. And it was familiar. With a happy cry of “Pikachupi!” Pikachu leapt from chair to chair until he reached the figure – a tall, scrawny girl in a sleeveless yellow hoodie, short shorts, and ginger hair pulled into a side ponytail.
“Pikachu!” she cried out as the Pokémon hopped into her arms and nestled into her neck. “Wha – where did you come from? Does this mean – oh, hi Ash!”
Ash gave a weak wave in reply. His head felt so dizzy that he couldn’t think of what else to do. Who would think he’d run into somebody from home in a giant movie studio in Unova – much less Misty?
POKEMON: BEST WISHES! “JEWEL OF THE SEVEN POKEMON!”
It really is a small world, thought Iris. They’d run into friends and rivals from Unova all through their journey; now, apparently, they were running into Ash’s friends from his home in Kanto. His best friend, even.
Iris wasn’t sure what to make of her yet. Pikachu obviously loved this girl; he hadn’t left her arms since she and Ash had come out of that old stage. Ash was lit up like the city lights too. He and his friend were chattering back and forth so much, Iris and Cilan still hadn’t had a chance to even give their names. They were somehow on the subject of how creaky the floorboards were in Ash’s room back home, when his mother would fix them, and how Misty was over there so much more often than Ash these days that maybe it should be considered her room (“Is not!” Ash insisted. “Is too!” Misty claimed.)
“So – you’re Misty, huh?” said Iris once they finally took a breath. “We’ve heard a lot about you.” You and five other people, she thought, but Misty’s name was the one that came up the most whenever Ash talked about his other traveling pals, her and some guy named Brock.
“That’s me!” Misty winked and struck a pose. “The world’s greatest beauty, and Water-type leader of the Cerulean City Gym!” Pikachu gave a happy cry of approval, one Iris couldn’t find it in her to match.
“‘World’s greatest beauty,’ huh?” she muttered. There’s a lot you could say about a claim like that… Axew’s snort told Iris that he agreed with her.
“And I know you two,” said Misty, with another wink. “You’re Iris, obviously – the future Dragon Master.”
“Oh – Ash said that?” Iris looked over at her friend, who shot her a cheeky grin. Iris covered her surprise with a pose of her own. “Well, at least he’s telling his friends back home the truth.”
Misty chuckled and turned to Cilan. “And that must make you –”
“Cilan, at your service!” he spun around and bowed. “Fellow Gym Leader, Pokémon Connoisseur, Film Connoisseur –”
“Annoying Connoisseur,” Iris cut in, and took some pleasure in watching Cilan deflate. Ash and Misty chuckled, then turned back to each other. “It’s great to see you again, Misty,” said Ash, for the third time since he’d brought her out. “But how’d you end up in Unova anyway?”
“There was a raffle in Cerulean City for a free trip to Worldwide Studios,” said Misty. “I wouldn’t have entered normally, but they made all my favorite monster movies. Blasko – the Undead, Creature from Heart Lake, Bride of the Sableye –”
Iris slapped a hand to her forehead. Great – another Film Connoisseur… “So you won?” she said, hoping to make a long story short.
A frown flickered across Misty’s face for the first time, but she nodded. “My sisters complained, of course, but I’m overdue for a vacation, and they agreed – eventually – to do their fair share and watch the Gym for a few days.”
“Sisters?” Iris asked.
“Misty’s three older sisters,” Ash explained. “They’re the –”
“They’re the internationally renowned water ballet act known as the Water Flowers of Cerulean City,” said Cilan, instantly recovered. “A popular attraction, though I’m afraid my brothers and I considered them a somewhat shallow taste when they last toured through Unova.”
“Shallow, huh?” Misty raised an eyebrow. “Well, those are my sisters you’re talking about…and they’re so shallow, they couldn’t make a puddle.” She laughed, and so did everyone else. “But forget about them – we’re here, at Worldwide Studios, and there’s so much to see before the autograph signing!”
“Autograph signing?” Iris, Ash, and Cilan all asked together, Pikachu and Axew chirping along.
“You didn’t know?” Misty seemed blown away by the thought. “Later this afternoon, on the set of his new movie, Bela Christopher is signing photos!”
“BELA CHRISTOPHER IS HERE!?” Even by Cilan’s standards, it was a ridiculous scream. He looked ready to faint, and Misty looked ready to jump the soundstage behind her.
“Who’s Bela Christopher?” asked Ash, and Iris was with him. She loved her some movies – even if she wasn’t a Connoisseur of them – and she’d never heard the name in her life.
“WHO’S BELA CHRISTOPHER!?” Misty and Cilan cried together. They looked to each other, as if they couldn’t believe the question, then rounded on Ash so quickly he took a step back. “Ash,” Misty sighed, “he’s only the greatest living star of horror and fantasy films around!”
“He’s a renowned Galarian actor and war veteran going into his fifth decade as a performer!” said Cilan.
“When Chisel Studios in Galar started remaking all the great monster movies, Bela Christopher played all of them,” said Misty. “He’s played Blasko the Vampire more times than anyone!”
“He also gave a fine turn as the great Galarian detective, Mycroft Abode!” said Cilan.
“He has a Bisharp that he uses in all his movies – it was great as the witch’s familiar in Pokémon Horror Center –”
“He’s an operatically trained singer whose albums cover everything from the great Alto Marian operas to heavy metal –”
“He just came back to horror films after a ten-year break with Reversal Mountain –”
“And he’s set to portray the evil wizard Saul of the Rainbow in the long-awaited adaptation of –”
“OK, OK, we get it!” Ash cried. He looked as exhausted as Iris felt. Was “he’s famous” not enough of an answer for these people?
“But that’s still hours away,” said Misty, instantly back into giddy mode. “And I haven’t even made it to the Little Kalos village yet. C’mon, Ash –” she set Pikachu up on her shoulder and linked arms with Ash – “I’ve still got so much to tell you! And you still haven’t told me what happened to that Victini you ran in to…” She led Ash down the studio road, heedless of his sputtering.
“Looks like we’ve picked up another kid,” Iris sighed, shaking her head. “Right?” She looked to Cilan; he still seemed worked into a frenzy. “Er – Cilan?”
“…How could I not have known Bela Christopher would be here signing autographs!?” He threw his hands to the sky and dropped to his knees. “The finest of all the Mycroft Abodes in cinema, and the only man to have played Mycroft’s brother too! There’s no time to lose – we must find out where that set is!” He sprang back up and took Iris by the hand.
“Shouldn’t we just follow Ash and MistyyyyIIIIEEE!” Iris screamed, led against all instinct down the studio street – in the opposite direction from their friends.
***
“Oof! How are you gonna get all this home to Cerulean City anyway?” Ash huffed.
“Don’t be silly, Ash.” Misty gave a dismissive wave of her hand before tossing another box onto the stack. “It’s only a few souvenirs.” That said souvenirs were piled tall enough that Misty couldn’t see Ash’s face anymore didn’t mean anything – that was all packaging. She’d make it fit her luggage when the time came.
“Now let’s see,” she said, taking a lick of her ice cream cone before offering Pikachu one in turn. “We’ve seen the Little Kalos village – I can’t believe how detailed that church façade was, it’s so convincing! – the live werecanroc make-up demonstration, the clock tower set, the Lure Hotel –”
“And we’ve been in every shop along the way,” Ash grunted. “C’mon, Misty – give me a break!”
“Relax, Ash,” Misty giggled. “We’re in the line for the autographs.” She was a little disappointed in how short the line was – they weren’t exactly first at the door, but she and Ash were pretty close for showing up just a few minutes before the set opened. The last classic horror convention Misty had attended in Kanto had a similarly slight turnout. It’s the same everywhere, thought Misty sadly. People just don’t appreciate the beauty in these things. It was Tentacool and Tentacruel all over again.
As soon as he heard they were in line, Ash dumped all the boxes off to the side, and made a big show of stretching and lurching over, as if in pain. Misty rolled her eyes. What a baby – they couldn’t have been that heavy. While he was bent forward, she gave him a thump to the back of the head. He whipped up and glared at her. She glared back. And, in a few seconds, they both broke down laughing.
“It’s great having you here, Misty,” said Ash, still chuckling. “It’s just like being back home.”
“Not exactly the same – Brock isn’t here.” The last word Misty had from Brock, he was settling in nicely at his school and looking into apprenticeships in Johto. “To tell you the truth, Ash, I was a little worried about you when I heard Brock wasn’t with you anymore.”
“Ah, c’mon.” Ash brushed his thumb across the bottom of his nose. “I can take care of myself. And besides, Iris and Cilan are with me here, and they’re great. Just wait ‘til you have some of Cilan’s cooking! Brock’s is still great, but –”
“I don’t know if I’ll have the time, Ash,” said Misty. “My trip’s only for the weekend, and just to see the studio. I have to go home tomorrow night.”
“Oh.” It was amazing how much of an open book Ash Ketchum could be. He almost literally deflated before Misty’s eyes. “That’s too bad…I miss hanging out with ya, Misty.”
Misty had long ago gotten over her doubts about Ash’s friendship. The chance of anything more set aside, she felt secure, knowing he was her best friend and she was his, and they could stay that way without a lot of words about it. That didn’t mean it wasn’t still nice to hear them now and again. “I miss you too, Ash,” she said. “I miss traveling. It’s great, being a Gym Leader – but I’d like to get back on the road sometimes.” Back home, the Cerulean Gym was in the middle of a top-to-bottom renovation, all on Misty’s initiative and design. It was tough work, consuming work – rewarding work. But not enough to stop Misty from taking Azurill up to the roof some nights to gaze out onto the bay, and the silvery horizon line in the moonlight.
And if traveling with Ash specifically had another appeal that she still hadn’t mentioned – well, what he didn’t know couldn’t hurt him. Or us.
“Well…at least we’ve got the weekend,” said Ash, perking back up. “And we’ve gotta have a Pokémon battle, at least!”
“You’ve got it!” Misty flashed him a grin and pumped a fist. “Just you wait, Ash Ketchum – you’re gonna get blown away!”
“Oh yeah?” Ash titled the brim of his hat back. “You haven’t seen my –”
“Ash! Misty!” Ash’s friend Cilan was running towards them in a manic rush, with a flustered Iris and her Axew in tow behind. He barely skidded to a halt in time to avoid crashing into them (but couldn’t stop Iris from falling face-first onto the street.) “Have we missed it?”
“Nope!” Misty said brightly. “Three minutes to go!”
“I told you we should’ve just followed them,” Iris grumbled as she picked herself up. Axew shot Cilan a dirty look before disappearing into his Trainer’s hair.
“So what’s this movie they’re making here?” Ash asked. He was on his toes, craning for a look at the still-closed stage doors.
“Jewel of the Seven Pokémon,” said Misty. “From the author of Blasko – The Un-dead. It’s the first time it’s ever been made into a movie!” Positive that Ash – and probably Iris – had no idea what the book was about, Misty started to explain. “It’s based on old legends about Yamask and Cofagrigus – that they were originally from a long-lost region far to the south. The hero is engaged, see, and his fiancée’s father is a famous professor who goes to that lost region and brings back seven Cofagrigus. They all keep together, circling around this giant ruby – ” Misty started to circle Ash, her hands held out and her fingers wiggling – “and the professor and his daughter figure out that the ruby belonged to an ancient princess that the Cofagrigus used to serve.
“They think the soul of the princess is trapped inside the jewel, see –” she placed her hands over Ash’s heart – “and even though the hero warns them it’s a bad idea, they set up this special ceremony under the right star on the right night of the year to enhance the power of the Cofagrigus and free the princess! And it works, but the princess possesses the fiancée, and she and the Cofagrigus start to tear the mansion apart! The hero and his Absol have to do – well, they don’t have a choice – but in the final scene, all the Cofagrigus are gone, the ruby and the professor vanish, and the hero’s left holding his fiancée’s body in his arms. It’s – ah!” Misty clasped a hand to her cheek. “It’s so romantic.”
“Romantic?” Ash frowned. “It sounds like everyone dies.”
“That’s a typical ending for the Gothic Romance genre, Ash,” said Cilan. Misty felt she didn’t need to taste his cooking to approve of Cilan as a good influence.
Not that Ash seemed to get it. “It still doesn’t sound romantic to me,” he said, crossing his arms. “Do they get together as ghosts?”
“No…”
“Then how’s the love stuff supposed to work?”
“You just don’t have the maturity and sophistication to understand, Ash,” Misty said, her nose turned up. “All the best love stories end in tragedy.” Well, all the best ones in fiction, anyway. Real life’s a different story…
“What, so if you got a boyfriend, you’d want him to die?” said Ash. His eyebrow was up, and there was a taunt in his voice.
“Oh, don’t spoil it!” Misty snapped. “I love that book, and it’ll be a great movie!”
“Sure, sure. Just don’t expect me to go with you.”
“Fine then – I’ll just take Pikachu!” Misty gave Ash’s starter a poke to the tummy, and he cooed happily.
“She couldn’t take either of them,” Misty heard Iris mutter to Cilan; she ignored her.
“And after we see the movie,” she told Ash, “I’ll use Pikachu against you in our Pokémon battle!” Just to play along, Pikachu nuzzled her face with his whole body, and wrapped his tail behind her head. Ash might’ve gotten whiny over that in the old days, but he just grinned, turned his cap back, and drew out a Poké Ball.
“Oh yeah?” he said, his voice suddenly much huskier than Misty remembered. “Well, let’s see you two traitors beat – THIS!”
The ball flew out, a bright light flashed, and there before Misty was a small Pokémon, barely taller than Pikachu, with a white face, an aqua body, a seashell perfectly positioned on its chest…
“…It’s so CUTE!” Misty swooped down to gather the Water-type in her arms. “Ash, how could you not tell me you had an Oshawott! Oh, it’s just the sweetest, most adorable little thing ever!” One look told Misty the love was mutual; Ash’s Oshawott had hearts in its eyes, and he threw his little paws around Misty’s neck.
“Well, Ash,” Misty giggled. “I guess that’s two of your Pokémon that like me best.”
“Aww…Oshawott!” Ash whined. Misty, both Ash’s Pokémon, Cilan, and Iris all laughed.
“Ah!” Cilan pointed toward the stage. “The doors open!” The large red doors slid to either side, still revealing nothing as the stage remained in shadow. A young man, dressed just like the guide from Stage 28, stepped out of the dark. His glasses were thick, his expression forlorn.
“Attention – attention, everyone!” he called to the slim crowd. “The production of Jewel of the Seven Pokémon has been indefinitely suspended, and the scheduled autograph signing is canceled.”

Some Retrospective Thoughts on Gen 7
Galar’s making me go nuts. You already know. Let’s look back on Alola because why not. I feel like I have stuff to say about it. Also, I just watched the last episode of the Alolan Anime, so there’s that.
Whenever I first think back to Gen 7, I think “Eh, it was alright. Nothing special, I guess.” The Pokemon were decent, apart from being almost universally slow, apart from like 3 speed demons, the starters weren’t much, the story was alright, the location was alright, etc. etc.
Then, I ACTUALLY think back, and I realize… I have no idea why I was thinking that. This generation was actually amazing.
First of all, they finally put the motif of the Sun and Moon into game types. It’s definitely a breath of fresh air after they tried to use the fucking dimensions in 3D space for titles in Gen 6 (Loved that gen too, but seriously “Life” and “Death” would both be more fitting and not as strange. Maybe they don’t want “Death” as a title tho). Really fits in with how naturally themed everything is too, which is obviously for the best, since this is the most “natural” game to date. Even though we technically already had an America-based region in Unova, Hawai’i is so unique in its own right it definitely fits for a region. I’m usually the type who doesn’t like super overt themes in things, and kind of just wants a very generalized experience, but it’s probably for the good of everyone that they don’t actually follow through with that idea.
Probably the biggest thing to come out of this generation is the new habit of them posting short little videos on Youtube revealing new Pokemon/features/etc. Obviously they were super trigger happy with them then, but now it seems they’ve taken a step back a little. I do love this idea, though, because it actually hypes me up more than anything else ever could. I remember before, even though I was kinda-sorta trying to follow the updates on Gens 4-6, I never really felt like I could, and even though I was going to get the games no matter what, now I realize I really want to know what I’m getting into.
I remember exactly where I was for some of the major announcements. For the starters, I was in my high school geometry class, where I watched and re-watched that video dozens of times just so I could keep looking at them. I started off on Rowlet’s side of course, but once I realized he was getting all the attention and ol Popplio was getting basically none, I changed my allegiance and stayed there to this day. Ignoring the fact that I don’t really like any of the final evolutions enough to actually use them in game, I LOVE Popplio himself. It’s seriously a shame that he didn’t become some clown seal like everyone was speculating. Unlike how it seems, I really, really like “normal” clown characters (as in, not “horror” clowns), so he could’ve easily become one of my favorites in that case. Decidueye is definitely my favorite of the final forms, and Incineroar I think is still underrated. Sure, whatever, he’s bipedal, and it’s weirder than it otherwise would be, but for some reason I love how his mouth was an actual modeled mouth and not just an image slapped on there like most Pokemon. It really made him more expressive than the average Pokemon. Plus, the animation for Darkest Lariat is really cool, with his hands flashing against a flat back background for a second before actually doing the move. Even better, it’s great meme potential when hacked onto other Pokemon, like Wailord.
I don’t remember if Solgaleo and Lunala were introduced in that first trailer too, but either way I love both of them. I was a bit more drawn to Solgaleo at first, but Lunala has since grown to be one of my favorite legendaries of all. The starry wings, golden rims, and white skeleton-y body are such a great combo. And yeah, sure, Solgaleo would’ve been more fitting as a fire type or whatever, but since stars form the heavy metals that make it onto planets it’s fine. I won’t accept that Lunala should’ve been a dark type, though. The Moon is a major embodiment of light in the night sky, so if anything it shouldn’t be related to darkness. As for Necrozma, I love his base form a lot. It’s such a strange look, especially how the back of his head is transparent. It’s the perfect “evil prism” pokemon. I really just wish Ultra Necrozma had more detail to him, though. He looks so flat for such a major figure in the games… At least he had a good battle and an even BETTER theme song, hot damn
Guess that’s a good transition to talk about the music, and I guess tangentially about Team Skull, since they were probably the best possible departure from the usual “Evil Team” formula. Them just being random hooligans causing trouble instead of a formal organization trying for world domination is a good change of pace, as pretty much everyone agrees… It wouldn’t have been so great if they didn’t at least try to incorporate rap/trap music into their themes. They’re probably the most music-oriented Team canonically speaking, so they’d have to have a great theme. Also, the idea that they feel left behind by the traditions of the Trials really makes sense, since something so important in their culture would definitely make someone feel left out if they couldn’t get through it.
Other themes for the more calm situations, like Hau’oli City’s night theme, are also extremely good. I didn’t even realize how much I loved that track until I heard Insaneintherain’s cover of it. It almost sounds like something out of Steven Universe, for how pleasant it is (apart from the piano). Lillie’s theme still gives me the warm fuzzies every time I hear it, too. I don’t think a single game before this has ever done the credits so well, too. Apart from the fun artwork, the last shot of Lillie and the game’s legendary actually just kills me every time. She’s such an adorable, pure soul, it’s crazy to think that when she was first revealed, we thought she was the secret supervillain of the game, just because she looked kinda peeved in her official art. We weren’t far off, though, with the Aether Foundation and all. I love both the calm theme of the Paradise itself AND their evil battle theme. Even though one is obviously an evil theme, it does feel like it came from the same source. Same goes for Lusamine’s theme. I really love the Aether Foundation as a whole too, where we can now have “Good” Foundation archetypes to counter the Evil Team archetype. Plus, their designs all involve white with gold accents, which is basically my brand. I tried to design my own Aether outfit the instant I saw them, since I love their look so much.
As for battle themes, I love how jazzy Galdion’s battle theme ended up. It made him so much more interesting than just a generic edgelord. The Elite Four’s battle theme might actually be the scariest theme to date for some reason, and yet all I can picture when listening to it is Acerola bobbing joyfully back and forth… Basically the same way, the Tapu battle theme is also pretty crazy, with tribal chants in the back of it. The Tapus are probably the coolest group of legendaries in the game, considering how unique they are, with their oddly wooden shells that represent animals. It really makes them feel like spirits brought about by the people of Alola themselves, instead of just some being that came out of nowhere. Probably the one theme that is the most nostalgic (yes, I know it was only 3 years ago, you can still feel nostalgia damnit) for me is the Kahuna battle theme. It was probably just some random comment on Youtube, but somewhere someone said that it was the perfect theme because it starts off intimidating, but quickly switches into a super fun melody, because ultimately, the Island Challenge is for fun. I just love that. I’m always looking for “Fun” stuff in pretty much everything, so I like a theme that represents that. Also, it’s just super catchy, and even expanded upon in Pokemon Masters. Let it be known that Hapu is the best Kahuna by the way. She cute. Also, watching her become the Kahuna is the best world building you could possibly muster up for this kind of setting.
Of course, I’m intentionally leaving out a certain group…
You know what I think of when I think of Hawai’i? Pearly white sand beaches… Palm trees… Fruity drinks… oh, and let’s not forget fucking interdimensional aliens.
The Ultra Beasts are the exact type of thing I’d want to insert into the Pokemon world, and that’s why I love them. They’re so weird in the best ways possible. When they were introduced in a trailer, I had the same reaction as I did with Type: Null. They put him up on the screen for a bit and was like “Haha here’s ‘Type: Null,’ okay next” like EXCUSE ME? YOU CAN’T JUST SHOW ME A POKEMON CALLED “Type: Null” AND NOT EXPLAIN WHAT’S GOING ON. Of course, that’s kind of what the games were for, but it was seriously a shock to the system to see Pokemon with code names instead of actual names. You also can’t convince me that Pheromosa wasn’t designed after Lusamine, and to a lesser extent that Xurkitree wasn’t designed after Guzma. I think it’s canon that Lusamine styled Lillie after Nihilego in her crazed state, but the uncanny likeness between those other two is pretty darn notable. I think from the first batch, Celesteela was my favorite of them all, being like a rusted copper rocket ship or something, who can even smack you with her two giant rockets. Also, Pokemon directly based on folktales are always welcome, no matter what. Meanwhile, with the Ultra games being the first sequels to introduce brand-new Pokemon, Blacephalon easily took top spot. I did say I liked clowns, didn’t I? Plus, the biggest evidence that he’s best boi is that in the anime when he appeared, he didn’t even try to attack anything. He just wanted to show off (specifically, believe it or not, by moonwalking… Whoever’s idea that was needs a raise). I also love detachable heads, which is a great idea to mix with clowns, and I guess also fireworks in this case… I just love him. I really hope that there will be future instances of Ultra Beasts, since it’s apparently super easy to just make them however the hell you want them, and since you’re not limited to a region’s natural environment. Lord knows whoever designed Buzzwole didn’t have any limitations. Exploring his, and really all of their worlds in USUM was extremely fun. It’s a damn shame Blacephalon and Stakataka (again, what a name) didn’t get the same privilege.
As for the Pokemon as a whole, like I mentioned, off the top of my head I don’t feel super crazy about many of them, even though that’s a total lie. Shiinotic appealed to my inner mushroom-character-lover so much that I basically designed a character that looked identical to him. He’s easily the best mushroom Pokemon to date, where he looks pretty cute while also being just slightly creepy enough, with those souless eyes. The concept for Araquanid is amazing, where he’s a reverse Diving Bell spider. I might’ve designed him a bit differently, but he still looks super cool. The ideas behind Oranguru and Passimian are also cool, since we haven’t delved much into intelligent ape Pokemon enough. Wishiwashi is another great concept, and probably the best fish Pokemon in my opinion because of it. Lurantis and Minior are total cuties, the latter being one of those Pokemon that isn’t always in the forefront of my mind, but the instant it is it reclaims its place as one of my all-time favorites. Golisopod and Kommo-o are two of the coolest Pokemon designs to me, the latter being my all-time favorite Pseudo-Legendary. Vikavolt looks awesome, despite being deceptively slow. Dhelmise looks weird until you realize it’s actually insanely large (like, Wailord large). Mudsdale is just an all-around good-looking horse. Oricorio also looks really cool, especially in her fiery form. Tsareena is, well… Tsareena… That’s not even including the adorable Magearna and Marshadow, who are in generational limbo… Also, I think Mimikyu might be the overall best addition to the franchise ever. No Pika-clone could ever compare.
I mean, specifically as far as a single Pokemon goes, Mimikyu is definitely the best addition to the franchise. Meanwhile, as far as concepts go, the absolutely HUGE idea of Regional Variants is the best addition. Again, I remember where I was when I heard the announcement: it was some sort of weird fantasy house, with a ton of cool details in it to make it look like a setting in some movie or something. It was awesome there, even if we were staying for only a night or so I think. Either way, the concept of different Pokemon adapting to different conditions in the region is the most perfect way to bring attention back to older Pokemon, and I’m so glad they seem to want to keep the idea for all future generations too. It’s especially fitting for Alola, since it’s a super remote island. I love how goofy Alolan Exeggutor is, especially because everyone else seems to love his goofiness too. Same sort of goes for Dugtrio, since his hair is actually based on a real thing… Marowak becoming a spiritual fire dancer is definitely the best possible iteration for him. My favorite might be the colorful Alolan Muk, though, even if Alolan Vulpix is infinitely cuter and better than fiery Vulpix in every way. I cannot be convinced otherwise.
Also, she’s a perfect fit for Lillie, so I guess I’ll use that as my transition into talking about the characters/anime. I’m just gonna be real with you. I’m not going to hold back. Alola has some of the cutest girls in the entire franchise. But first of all, let’s divert that train and instead lust after a man who is easily the hottest professor in the games yet, Kukui. What self-respecting researcher wouldn’t wear his professor-mandated lab coat without any undershirt? He needs his bulging abs as target practice for his Pokemon’s moves, people. He needs to let them breathe. Also, I was kind of enamoured with Sycamore before him, but you can’t deny the tinted skin gets to you a little. Burnet’s a lucky gal, let’s just say.
Okay, now that we’ve established that my pants don’t discriminate, we have to talk about Wicke. So now that that’s covered, can I just say I love Mina? I’d say she deserves more attention, but she was the only Alolan to make it into Lets Go for some reason, so I guess she’s well off? First of all, I love hippie-esque girls (idealized hippies, at least), so that’s a major plus… I mean, I should probably stop using the word “cute” altogether because it applies to every girl in the game, but yeah. Lana’s highly deserved spotlight in the anime made me love her too, where she was a perfect combination of extroverted while still more soft-spoken. I don’t know if that kind of characters’ an anime trope, but lord knows it’s not in western media, so I love how unique her personality is. Her interacting with Mallow and Lillie in cute, girly ways felt so wholesome. If the anime’s anything, it’s wholesome.
One sec, though. I have to mention that I really like Hau. He’s obviously the one pinned as “Boo, he’s not a giga-asshole! That means he’s bad!” because I guess the fandom’s hive mind has collectively agreed that the only good rivals are assholes now. Like I said before, this stuff’s more about fun now. Hau’s a fun friend to fight, to the point where you beat him as the Champion you kinda feel bad for knocking him down so much. You feel bad because you like him, you know. Also, I forgot to mention this earlier but even though he isn’t entirely difficult himself, the trials in these games are actually both a difficult and interesting challenge. A 2v1 where you’re at the disadvantage is a great boss battle idea, especially with the strategies set out by a Pokemon’s different abilities and moves. Probably the best was Totem Lurantis, who of course summoned a Sunny Day-based Castform to activate her Chlorophyll and buff her Solar Blade, while adding a diverse fire type into play. It was really difficult, to be honest. Those who say it wasn’t either got lucky or have insane standards that cannot be met because they’re Pokemon Veterans who know every little thing about everything. I’m pretty much in that camp, and I still had to actually plan during the fight. Same goes for Totem Araquanid in USUM. I literally had to poison (not toxic, base poison) stall that guy because I couldn’t do anything to him otherwise. He was pretty much one-shotting everything I sent out, anyway, so I had to stall however I could. You can’t argue that that means it was “easy” because I knew how to beat him. It’s only “easy” if you can just send out pretty much whatever and do whatever and still win. Then there’s the Rainbow Rocket episode in USUM, which is just crazy… There’s not much to say that isn’t obvious there. It was fun seeing the villains that were victorious in a different dimension.
Anyways, for the anime, I also have a similar stance. It really seemed like the only people who started off hating it were anime nerds who had no concept of an in-between frame. I will say that it was a step down from XY/XYZ though, but those seasons’ quality was unusually high. Compared to the animation quality of every other season, it was so much better. First of all, I really don’t even like “anime style” that much, so a slightly more western style was very welcome. Like pretty much every show ever, the animation quality is seriously high where it counts, so there’s not much to be said about that, but I’d say the overall animation quality is a step up in general. The more simplified style only really looked weird in Ash because we’re so used to his more pointy style. Every other character looked totally fine, in my opinion.
As for the story, I will say I would’ve wanted the scope of the plot to be much larger, like how with the other seasons Ash was going on an adventure, whereas here it was very contained, and centered around the Pokemon School. But, still, like I mentioned, I did enjoy the casual wholesomeness of it all. Not only do I just like mindless fun, but it made the crazy shit feel even crazier. The episode where Faba was trying to catch Nebby is a perfect example. It begins with a nice fun game of all the Pokemon and people jumping rope and having a good time, with some slapstick humor with Faba failing to capture Nebby. Then he does, and shit goes down. First of all, he’s torturing the little thing. Then, ASH (not his Pokemon, Ash himself) tackles Faba. Tell me, what other season had humans fighting other humans? I honestly can’t think of a single time when fighting was done with fists and not Pokemon (although surely I’m forgetting something, there’s gotta be at least one other example, right?) Then, Lillie re-experiences her past trauma of almost being abducted by Nihilego, except now her mom gets abducted in her place… Like, what happened? It was so cute a second ago. That’s always the selling point for any cartoon, for me. Stay casual for a decent amount, then break it with some uncharacteristically high tension. The same goes for the segment where Ash goes into Guzzlord’s post apocalyptic dimension. As for mega-feels, It’s great that they made Litten/Torracat an actual character instead of just some random Pokemon, with Stoutland and whatnot. The episode where they go into Tapu Fini’s mist and Mallow meets her mother, and Torracat meets Stoutland just destroyed me. It was strategically remedied by Lillie and Gladion not seeing their father, suggesting he’s still alive. There were some really great episodes in the season, for sure.
So, yeah… Alola was a good time. Don’t deny it. Galar’s gonna be great too. No game’s ever going to be perfect, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be fun.

So calls my heart to bad decisions (Unova)
Based on this , cause I can’t get it out of my head and I think it’d be funny to give mini versions of the crack ideas I said. The keep reading thing is broken so I’mma have to keep it long sorry.
“I just can not get over how massive this place is.”
Karen awed large eyes scanning the details of the stone structures in wonder. While sure she was aware that this place was likely home to many the atrocity, and scheming of evil it was still incredible to see the scale of the place. I mean an ENTIRE castle hidden underground beneath the very league. From the villain perspective this was a massive accomplishment.
“Prcye could never.”
“PRCYE COULD NEVER!”
She repeated Will’s words emphasizing each syllable as he said them. This seemed to pick up the other’s energy as well. They both were grinning and smiling at each other Will happy to return the energy.
“I do love the absolute middle finger this place is to leagues.”
“Right! I know we’re in a league and all but seriously this place makes any and all form of league bashing look so inferior.”
“Exactly, you can’t one up this!”
“I mean not unless you build a bigger castle which honestly I would love to see.”
“Wait, Is that a basketball court?”
Will interrupted his neck craning around a corner. They passed glances silently agreeing that this needed to be investigated. Sure they’d seen basketball courts before, but one in a castle? Besides if there was one thing they had found every inch of this place was wondrous which demanded it all be explored.
As the door pushed open the two were met with a cacophony of sights that made the place into a childhood paradise. Basketball court, a whole skate ramp, trains, and who knew what else was behind the tall tower of tires.
“I repeat. Pryce. Could. Never.”
Will repeated more than happy to hurry in to see everything. Karen followed of course amazed as well by the rather extravagant toys. They knew N was raised by this guy, and it seemed he really went the extra mile in providing things to keep the ‘young prince’ busy. Will was digging over by the ramp seeming to look for something. She had an idea what it was and sure enough he stood up holding a skateboard and a helmet with a big grin.
“You know this stuff was likely given as gifts but really a way to keep N busy.”
She pointed out ignoring what he clearly wanted to do. At her reaction he frowned with a pout knowing she was doing that on purpose. This trip was to avoid deep talk, why was she being boring!
“I mean obviously. That or it was his only way of showing love. Shallow humans Karen, no surprise there, alot of them exist. Now stop getting existential and reading the room so we can compete.”
He told her matter of factly while starting to clip the helmet on. Karen rolled her eyes at his comment about getting ‘too deep’. Oh that wasn’t bad, she could really go deep if he wanted. She decided not to try and stop him either with his current idea. He of course called her out on this as one foot was placed on the board.
“What not going to tell me this is a bad idea?”
Will asked.
“Naw, I know you don’t know how to skateboard, and if you don’t want to talk I’m ready to watch you eat it.”
“I will make you regret those words!”
He snapped back pushing off with all the gusto and confidence of a bird taking off to fly. Unfortunately for him he was a bird only just learning to fly. That confident push lead to the board flying, and his body staying in place. He yelped falling right on his back with a crash not able to use his abilities fast enough. Karen of course was grinning at the show but a snort escaped as the board crashed back into his leg.
“Aw swing and a miss?”
“NO! A setback!”
He protested sitting up to see her still laughing. Fine, well he knew how to get back at her since he knew Karen’s faults. One being an inability to refuse a challenge.
“I doubt you can do better.”
“Tch, bet i could at least do slightly better.”
“Well prove it.”
“I don’t have anything to prove to you.”
“Oh I know, because I know you can’t do it.”
And with that line he watched a ripple cross her crystal pools. That got her attention, he held back showing too many facial reactions otherwise she might back down again. Unclipping the helmet he waved it in the air tauntingly seeing her eyes follow it. It didn’t take long for Karen to scoop the helmet with her hand from him and pop it on her own head. He stood up, despite still being a bit soar, to get the board. As he kicked it over to her she stopped it with her foot while calmly adjusting the helmet strap. Keeping her eyes locked on him she straightened her shoulders showing off her facade of confidence.
“Now watch and learn.”
“Oh do teach.”
Huffing she focused ahead bending the knee on the board. She knew not to push as heard as Will, but also knew out of the two of them he had better balance. All she had to do though was stay on the board right? That at least would be better than him. Giving a solid push off the ground she scrambled to make both feet touch the board. She was wobbly but at least staying on. As she started to smile she was reminded that there was a slant ahead when as she straightened up the board under her slanted sending her to the ground this time sliding on the wood.
“OW! Wood burn!”
“Ha! But you still failed!”
“I did better than you!”
“Barely.”
“Oh yeah?”
She snapped standing up and snatching the board.
“Again then!”
The two stayed there for another hour falling over and over. Neither of them got terribly good, but they had fun. They also were covered in bruises by the end.

pairing: implied milo and leon
rating: pg-13
word count: 1,027
so I wrote this at 2 am the night after the direct on impulse and while I’d like to make it far more detailed I’m too lazy for that so hopefully y’all enjoy what I got
“Are you seeing anyone?”
“Pardon?”
“Have you been seeing anyone recently?”
Leon blinks. The reporter flashes him a sweet smile as if she didn’t just ask a question completely unrelated to the discussion at hand. One moment he’s recalling his latest match with a powerful trainer that’s migrated from Unova. Suddenly, she wants to know if he’s in love. It throws him off briefly, but he doesn’t let his composure falter. He shakes his head lightly in response. “No. I’m not.”
The reporter looks surprised. Leon doesn’t understand why until she opens her mouth again.
“Really? But you’re so handsome!”
He flushes, giving a sheepish laugh. He was never good at handling compliments when it came to appearance despite his confidence in everything else otherwise.
“What about that redhead girl we’ve seen you around the region with?” The reporter teases with a childish glee.
Sonia? He’s snorts, and, unable to help himself, goes into a small laughing fit startling the journalist. Seriously? But he can’t say he’s surprised. Everyone thought he and his best friend would fall victim to the Hallmark trope; that they’d fall in love and have multiple, tinier versions of themselves running around behind a classic white picket fence. That is until she came out. The paparazzi doesn’t seem to be aware though. He decides to correct them.
It takes a moment for Leon to clear his throat, and he swiftly dispels the mountain of rumors that were growing all too quickly. Rumors aren’t his thing. They don’t work with his image.
“I’m going to assume you mean Sonia.”
“Ooo. Her name’s Sonia?”
“She’s a lesbian.”
The reporter’s face falls. She looks disappointed. Leon assumes she wanted to be the first to get some non-existent scoop on his personal life. She wouldn’t be the first to try. Having reached his mid-20s it seemed as though everyone was suddenly oddly obsessed to see him ‘settle down.’ To ‘Start a family.’ He’d managed to dodge the questions at the start of his career when he was slightly younger, but it was rapidly becoming more frequent. He doesn’t get it, why everyone is so desperate to know when he’s going to get married. Leon’s got at least 50 years left. Why should he slow down now? It was annoying. Almost aggravating. But he’d never let that on. It wasn’t a part of his image and his image has fans to please.
The reporter recovers and offers another thin smile and he’s starting to feel uncomfortable. The lady is quiet for a few moments when Leon assumes the interview is over and that she’s preparing to close when she drops another question.
“Any gym leaders?”
Her question makes sense, oddly enough. Leon spends a lot of time with gym leaders. More so, he’s sure, than champions in other regions where the leagues are not based in stadiums and crafted carefully to cater to the masses. In fact, he’s pretty sure every league other than Galar only require mandatory meetings during emergencies. Galar has one once a month, in which every leader and elite four member gather. His manager says the meetings are meant to promote the “growth of the league” but it’s really about planning to gain more sponsors and viewers. The dreadful meetings have allowed him to become well acquainted with pretty much everyone but a few have struck a close chord with him.
Specifically Milo.
Milo is in every sense of the word, an angel. A farmer from a small town in Unova, his charming accent is so sickly sweet it gives moomoo ice cream a run for it’s money. He’s built like a bewear, muscles sculpted carefully from years of hauling hay and herding tauros from dawn till dusk. His soft spoken demeanor and friendly eyes are inviting. His tends to his pokémon like a mother would. The first type Leon saw Milo coo at his eldegoss Leon’s heart nearly burst from the sound. He honestly didn’t think he could appreciate Milo more than he did in that moment until he received one of his hugs. Milo’s hugs are shockingly gentle and incredibly warm; it’s like being wrapped up in a sweater stitched in a wooloo’s fur while sitting next to a fireplace. Leon has never been to Alola but be imagines the feeling he got from that embrace is what it’s like to receive a flower crown from a comfey.
‘Shit.’
Leon feels his skin heating up just thinking about the man and it’s hard to maintain eye contact with the journalist as he lies through his teeth.
“No.” He hopes that his darker complexion hides the flush in his cheeks long enough for him to escape. “We’re like a family.”
He can see it in her eyes. She doesn’t buy it, and he internally begins to panic. Leon’s not ready to confess his god forsaken feelings; admitting he likes one of his coworkers nonetheless is just too much. It would cause a social media frenzy and a new influx of paparazzi he isn’t sure he could handle this time. He’s sick of these types of reporters; ones that dig like a Durant for information without regard for anyone’s privacy. She’s about to comment again and Leon braces himself for the new set questions in which he’ll have to lie again when off to the side one of the sound crew motions to cut. She’s out of time.
“Oh alright! I’ll stop pestering you now. Good luck with your next match!”
‘Thank Zacian.’
He walks away hoping that his fib wasn’t brutally obvious on camera. That’s not the kind of attention he needs right now giving his first scheduled overseas battle around the corner. Leon decides it’s time to train for it, and pushes the thoughts of Milo out of his mind. He’s got sponsors to gain. Fans to please. A brother he can’t disappoint.
Focus on the battle. He thinks. Just focus on myself. No love. No Milo. Just focus on myself.
Everything else is just a distraction. A champion doesn’t do distractions. They aim to please, and please he will.
Leon’s got an image to maintain. Whether he wants to or not.

.: A Natural Proposal :.
A quick shoutout to @robotarmjokes, who wanted to know when I posted this! The time is now...       I hope you enjoy~!
Tumblr media
The days passed by a lot faster than N would’ve had expected them to. So engrossed was he in planning, in making sure Rachel wouldn’t found out of his plans, that the days turned to weeks...and before he knew it, he was looking at the calendar’s date with a blank expression.
September 18th. The day they met for the first time.
N, the then-king of Team Plasma.
Rachel, a then-nobody. A beginning trainer in the Unova region, a Snivy in their arms. A stubborn little oddity who’s voice caught his attention...and then they caught his attention for years.
Was it not time to take their relationship to the next level? N had never thought of marriage before...but then again, before Rachel had come into his life, he’d never thought much of relationships or love, either. He’d never grown up with any of that in his life... Not until now. A healing environment for them both, away from the things that hurt them.
They’d already done so much for him. So he wanted to do something that hopefully could not only encapsulate his gratitude and thankfulness, but also... His love for them. And how he didn’t want to be without them ever again.
Rachel would wake up later that morning alone. Not a rare occurrence, by any means, but something felt... Off. Everything felt too quiet. They lay there for a moment or two longer, listening and waiting.
No sounds in the kitchen or the bathroom. No sounds of TV or silverware or footsteps. Was N even home? That’s what motivated Rachel to sit up, blinking in concern. Was he...?
Walking out into the living room, it seems like they hadn’t missed him by too long; there was a small breakfast already set up. Pancakes, cut and mixed berries, whipped cream, juice... The food was still warm; the perfect temperature to sit down and dig in right away, looking around. Still no sign of N.
It was only when the food was almost gone, Rachel beginning to feel full, when N’s Zorua friend darted into the room. Had he...been waiting somewhere? Hiding? What was N up to...? Rachel looked around again as Zorua hopped up onto the table, a letter in his mouth. They could only sigh, taking the letter and opening it, not minding the swirling cursive on the front addressing it to them.
   “Rachel,
Today is an important anniversary. You’ve probably forgotten, and it’s okay. I might’ve forgotten, too, had I not been so dedicated to the planner you’d given me. You’re right, it’s been very helpful.
Anyways, I wrote this for you for a reason. I would like you to meet me at the Rendez-View Ferris Wheel after you finish eating. There’s something important I’d like to discuss with you. Though, don’t fret! It is only good things. I know you often stress about mysteries.
Dress comfortably...and cute, if you’d like. I want today to be special.
Until then, my love,
   Natural”
Rachel blinked in surprise at the letter, re-reading it a few times. Go back to Rondez-View? Discuss something? N wouldn’t be the type to break up in a flashy way- he’s a lot more straightforward than that- so he’s right... That’s nothing to fret about.
For a moment, the fleeting thought that he might propose entered their mind, but they laughed softly, shaking their head. Yeah, right... Why would he? Sure they’ve talked about it before, but that didn’t mean he’d want to... Sighing a little, they scratched at Zorua’s head, smiling at the happy croon sound he made.
“Want some berries, Zorua? I won’t be able to finish this all by myself, anyways.” The happy yipping was all they needed to hear, laughing softly as they scritched at his cheek, before digging back into their pancakes. Occasionally helping Zorua by feeding him pieces of berry.
--------
It was an hour later by the time Rachel stepped out of the house. Autumn was rolling in, so it felt a good enough time to harness the beginnings of the feel-good weather and throw on a sweater. Add with it some jeans, sneakers, and their usual black purse (slung over the opposite shoulder, as usual), they set out for Nimbasa City.
A venture...that wasn’t as long as they first thought it could be. Granted, so much moving around in other regions made moving around Unova a breeze. Kanto sure didn’t have the well-laid out paths and roads that Unova had! It made everything a lot easier to work with, for sure. (And more rewarding when it came to going off the beaten path.)
It wasn’t hard to spot N, sitting on a bench nearby the ferris wheel...looking rather sour at the long line that had apparently formed in the early morning of people wanting to get on when the sun was still low in the morning sky. A rare sort of occurrence that would surely only be matched when the sun went down; just as many would want to hop on for the sunset, they would imagine.
“You wanted to ride?” He jumped a little at the question, having to tilt his head up a little more in order to see them from behind his cap. Rarely without it, even now, it seemed.
“Well, yes. That was my original plan, up until I saw the line... It wasn’t as bad earlier,” he grumbled sourly, pouting back at the line. Rachel couldn’t help but giggle a little at his attitude; he’s being so grumpy! It’s so cute~!
“Sorry about waking up late, then...”
“O-Oh! Don’t be!” N quickly assured, eyes wide and waving both of his hands. “I simply didn’t expect to find the ferris wheel so populated at this time! That’s all...” His voice quieted a moment, frowning a bit before standing up from the bench, a hand going into his pocket. “...Would you like to do something else, then? Until the ferris wheel is less crowded?”
“Oh... Yeah, sure! I don’t mind at all~!” N’s smile at such a cheerful declaration is all they needed to see, his hand reaching out for them. Waiting for Rachel to take it.
“Then let’s make today special, just like I promised. Okay?”
--------
It started with a visit to the Musical Theater in Nimbasa. Then it was backtracking to Castelia, getting a pair of Casteliacones and visiting Liberty Garden again, the home of Victini...or V, as Rachel had simply nicknamed them. A fond memory they could now both share. Head to Pinwheel Forest to revisit memories they’d made there... The Dreamyard, where Rachel showed N all their favorite spots, rambling about their love of spooky, dreamy places like this one.
In a surprise move, Flying over to Iccirus City, and walking out to Dragonspiral Tower, looking up at one of the pinnacle locations of their...whole beginning relationship. One of truth and ideals. Sides they both ended up embodying during that time... In more ways than one, as it ended up.
Rachel. Champion of Reshiram. Champion of Truth.
Natural. Champion of Zekrom. Champion of Ideals.
And their truth overcame his ideals. Shattered his world, but for the better; taking him out of that toxic world that “father” of his had built for him. Leading him to the truth of their words...and the newfound ideals he built because of it.
True balance achieved, and they talked about it on top of the tower, his hand on their hip as he held them close. Even with a sweater (and him, in his black turtleneck) on, it was still pretty chilly up there!!
By the time they made it back to Nimbasa City, the sun was starting to set, colors growing in the sky. They were holding hands, Rachel looking around the city as they made it back towards the Rondez-View Ferris Wheel. Plenty of people still out and about...but a shocking curiosity hit when they reached the ferris wheel.
There... There was no line?! Wouldn’t a TON of people want to be here for the sunset? The most romantic part of the day?? They cast N a suspicious look, but to his credit, he ignored it flawlessly. (Or maybe it was just him not paying attention. Equally possible.)
Getting on was a breeze, too... At that point, though, Rachel had given up. Why not admire the view while they had it? So as the wheel turned, slowly bringing them up, they tried to not pay attention to N. Who was rather intently staring at them...and in trying to not look at him, missing out on the milling people below, curious for what was going on in that car on the ferris wheel that required privacy... (But most already catching on to what was going on and being incredibly excited to see the results of it!)
...Meanwhile, there was only so long attempting to stare out the slow-moving ferris wheel would work as a distraction for the tension in the air. At the end of it, Rachel would have to face...whatever this was. So might as well-
“Rachel? Darling...?” Their eyes dart over to him, head turning to look at him fully...and realizing how nervous he looked. Skin a little shinier with nervous sweat, knuckles a little paler where his fingers laced together, and brows pulled together in such a heartrending expression Rachel didn’t know what to do or say for a moment.
“Uh... Y-Yes?” He opened his mouth to reply, paused, and seemed to rethink his words as he looked down to the ground. Maybe nervous...was an understatement?
“I wanted...to do something today. Something I’ve been thinking about for a long time now. About how you make me feel...and how I don’t want to let this go.” As he looked back up to them, a determination beginning to regrow in his eyes. The light from the setting sun darkening one of his eyes, casting shadows all over his face... The intensity of it felt like his confession of being Team Plasma’s leader all over again.
“You... You introduced things into my life I’ve never had before,” he continued, leaning forward a little more. “I knew little kindness before, as the king of Team Plasma. Especially from other humans. You showed that to me. You...brought love into my life, though I didn’t know it until much later. And I’m so, so glad that you did. You’ve changed my life with your truth, brightened up my life with your dedication, your kindness, your selflessness...and your love for me. You’ve helped me become someone else. Someone... I’m happier to be.
“You’ve truly helped me change, and I cannot thank you enough for that. Being as I am, I don’t think I could thank you enough for that...but that’s why I wanted to do this.”
Rachel was suddenly aware of the sky behind N, perfectly clear. The ferris wheel stopped at it’s highest point. N standing up in that car, towering over them for a split second, a moment that felt like forever.... Their eyes widening as he sunk down to a knee to the best of his ability in that small, ferris wheel car.
Watching as he pulled out a small, dark green box from his pocket...and opened it, showing the ring inside; an emerald between a small pearl and an onyx.
Their jaw damn near dropped onto the floor, hands flying up to cup around their mouth in shock. No way. He was....no way. Shock prevented tears from bubbling up, but they just...stared. At such a lovely ring and the handsome man before them.
“Rachel... My love. My girlfriend, my boyfriend... My everything. I...want to marry you. Would you do me the honor?” Even with the harsh lighting, it wasn’t hard to see how flushed he was with embarrassment and anxiety. The shaking of the box in his hands or the soft sound of his equally-shaky breath.
“I... N, I...” They stumbled over their words for a few moments, before nodding vigorously. “Y-Yes.... Yes. Of course I will.”
The sigh of relief was instantaneous, a smile brightening his face as he hurried to stand off of the hard, metal floor, hugging Rachel close. Not caring for the small seats for the moment as he sat beside them, face buried into their shoulder, murmuring, “Thank you, thank you...”
Embarrassingly enough, there was plenty of clapping to go around when N and Rachel stepped out of the car, already excitedly celebrating the engagement between the previous Unova Champion and the ex-King of Team Plasma. (Though a smaller branch still dedicated to him weeped in joy at the news; the king would no longer rule alone! He had someone else now!! All hail to the future of Team Plasma~!)
It wasn’t much longer before the news got ahold of it... Leading to Kisa calling Rachel not too long later. (“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me first! I thought you trusted me?!”) Curtis sent his congratulations not long later...but definitely still embarrassing, considering the two were dating and all. (Which led to N pointing out- yet again- that two brown-haired champions fell for men with green hair... Causing Rachel to laugh at that all over again.)
And hey, who knows... News gets around fast. Knowing them, a lot more letters would be coming in, soon enough...
“I hope you have a quiet place in mind for the wedding, Natural,” Rachel hummed, petting Sylveon absentmindedly. Finally home, sitting together on the couch, his arm over their shoulders and Rachel cuddled into his side. Sylvie half-draped over Rachel’s lap and.... Well, N’s Zorua was small enough to lay in his lap without issue.
“Oh... I might have a place in mind,” he assured, a small smile on his face. “I think you’ll enjoy it.”

I wish Alola wasn't the region where Ash wins because the anime gave the Nebby story to him instead of Lillie, Lusamine wasn't allowed to be the nonredeemable villain she is, Ash didn't even make a full team for the league, and the league itself was handled poorly. The anime ruined Alola from the start.

I’m kind of in a couple different minds about it.
On the one hand, I don’t really have strong feelings about the Alola anime one way or another. I haven’t seen most of it (and have instead just paid attention to it from a distance through fandom osmosis) because I don’t think that slice of life works for me when applied to Pokémon. I want adventures and traveling, and while there was some traveling in the Alola anime, it was a bit too grounded to its home base for my tastes. In addition to which, I think having such a large cast of companions might have hurt some of them, in that from my understanding many of them took a long time to add more members to their teams, if they did at all. (Of course, that’s not to say having fewer companions always allows them growth, because Misty and Brock were sadly not allowed to have their own arcs in the original series. That’s probably my biggest gripe of the OS.) I also can’t say that the anime ruined Alola, in my opinion, because I also don’t have a very good opinion of the Alola games. Most of my complaints stem from the gameplay, sure, but I also take issue with how Lusamine and Gladion were both handled (in that Lusamine was given “redemption” and Gladion wasn’t allowed to participate in the climax of his own family’s story), among other smaller quibbles.
So on that note, any issue I take with Ash winning isn’t really centered with the fact that he’s winning in this series, in the sense that this isn’t a series I necessarily dislike (I’m more indifferent to it), and therefore I’m upset about it. If I have any reason to not want him to win this one, then that reason is either that I prefer Gladion as a character and would prefer him to win (true, sorry, Ash), or that I feel like the Alola League is the least important of the game Leagues, which, from a storytelling perspective, it . . . kind of is. I mean, going based on what we know from the games, this is a brand new League that Kukui just started up because he thought it would seem fun. In the games I took issue with this little subplot because the League system seems to be a system of government in most regions, which means Kukui would need to overthrow Alola’s religious oligarchy in order to institute this new system of government, which should have created a lot of problems but in reality created zero, which in turn made it seem as if he just set up a fun kiddie tournament that would hold no real importance with regards to the rest of the world even though dialogue from Kukui (which may have been USUM only, can’t recall) suggested that he wanted it to. The anime isn’t that serious, in that they never really touch on issues like politics or governance very much (although if they’d been faithful with the stories from Black/White they would have had to given N’s entire goal was to become Champion specifically so he could change the laws in Unova), but from my understanding Kukui’s motivation / what he does is more or less the same. He sets up the Alola League so everyone can have fun. And in that sense, everyone can participate, regardless of whether they’ve met certain qualifications or not. It’s a free-for-all. And while that made for a big League despite not introducing very many new characters to the plot, it also makes it seem much less . . . high risk? Because by and large Ash was competing against trainers who hadn’t exactly trained for this, at least not for the length of a saga, which is what normally happens. (And before anyone starts, sure, Alan decided to enter the League late, but he had been seriously training Lizardon for years, and for far more high-stakes reasons, so he still counts.) Whether you want to talk Indigo, Silver Conference, Ever Grande Conference, or Lumiose Conference, generally speaking all the trainers who entered had been aiming to enter for months. They’d gone through the work of collecting badges, devising strategies, and working hard to make it there. As a result, Ash could lose against any one of them at any time, because all of them were just as serious as he is. And I don’t mean to knock any of the Alola League participants, but let’s be real, Team Rocket spends 50% of their time selling malasadas and the other 50% doing crimes (or maybe it’s more like 70% - 30% at this point? I haven’t been watching consistently). Sophocles is focused on his inventions, Kiawe has his delivery service, Mallow is helping at her family’s restaurant, Lillie has just barely started as a trainer, and so on and so forth. I’m sure they all tried very hard, but they don’t have a dream of being a Pokémon Master like Ash does, so they haven’t been training as hard as he has for this very goal. (Of course, trainers like Gladion and Hau have, but they were not the norm for this tournament, I don’t think.)
On top of which, there’s the fact that since this is a brand new League, it’s also not one that holds any history or, again, large-scale significance in the rest of the world. Even the Orange League, despite being much smaller and not a game League, has been around for a long time. It was a serious League, not one just thrown together by a professor who wanted to let everyone have fun. Saying, “I’m the Kanto Champion!” has a lot more weight than, “I’m the Alola Champion!” because the latter is going to get a, “Alola has a League??” response from most people outside of Alola at this rate. It doesn’t mean it’s not important or cool at all, but it’s just a bit . . . underwhelming. I think that’s the best word to describe how I feel about it. Underwhelmed. It’s not an impressive League win to me, and if Ash were going to win any League to end his time on the show, I kind of wish he’d gone back and won Kanto’s so that he could be the Champion of his own region, and make up for the way he was ripped off way back when.
At the same time, though, I do love Ash as a character and always have, and in light of the fact that we may be experiencing a reboot, if Ash’s time on the show is to end (or if this Ash’s time on the show is to end, although I hope that they go with an entirely new character if they really are ending his time rather than using AU Ash), then I do want him to go out having finally achieved his dream, or at least a version of his dream. The worst thing I can think of is ending this anime after twenty-one years with Ash not having accomplished what he set out to do in the first place. (And yes, I know what Shuudo wanted to do, but his idea was terrible, absolutely terrible.) So in that sense, particularly if this is Ash’s final saga, I’m happy that he’s winning.
So I don’t know. I’m not exactly jumping for joy, but I’m also not exactly upset about it either. I’m mostly underwhelmed, mostly indifferent, mostly curious to see what it is they’re planning for this next leg of the anime. At the end of the day, though, my favorite boy already won his League, so I already got the results I’m most happy about.
