least favorite sibling?
Tumblr media
I don't actually dislike ANY of the Umbrellas. Admittedly, the Sparrows didn't do much for me (aside Ben, of course, once he and Klaus started hanging out), but I believe keeping them more one-dimensional was a conscious choice on the part of the writers.
However, the sibling whose character arc I have the most trouble accepting is still Luther. And I don't blame Luther for this, I blame the TUA writing staff for being off the mark. I can tell they intended for Luther to seem like he is breaking away from the misguidedly loyal, controlling "Number One" that Reginald (whom I DO hate, completely and unironically) forced him to play. They wanted his marriage to Sloane to be seen as a wholesome step outside of the toxic family echo chamber. They wanted him to seem like a big sweet golden retriever once he relaxed and just decided to be himself and not a leader (since frankly Five is a much better Number One and always has been). They wanted him to seem supportive of Klaus, the sibling who, in this season, had arguably the biggest existential weight on his shoulders.
For me, I could see that earnest effort, but it still fell flat. It just seemed like they were trying to make Luther ....dumber???? And less of an independent, functioning adult. And still someone who falls back on physical force to get his way, because he's too flustered to think of any other contingency plan.
Allison was obviously the villain of this season, but I'm not judging likability here (again, I like them all), I'm judging the success of a character arc, and development from one point to the other. Sometimes that involves DEVOLUTION into being a WORSE person, and with Allison, this was executed FLAWLESSLY. I watched her fall, I knew it was happening, I frantically wanted someone to help her, I hated what I knew she would do (and did do), but I still understood and sympathized with it. I felt horrible for her, but I could also not blame or demonize Viktor. To me that is the mark of truly superb writing. If both characters in a major plot conflict are sympathetic, and you can’t “pick a side?” That is the BEST writing (And no, I am not condoning Allison’s attempted sexual assault of Luther. That should be made VERY clear).
And I wish Luther had gotten just a little more air time to just BE LUTHER, instead of become part of a very rushed romantic subplot (which was admittedly cute and touching and characteristically a stupid Umbrella sib move, but detracted from a real arc). Instead it's somehow funny that he's screaming at and bullying Klaus in the afterlife, and all that comes across to me is how kind and generous Klaus is to be in a place where he legitimately believes he is a "freak" who should just "stay dead," but still decides to comply with Luther for the sake of the family, and helps Luther contact Sloane while he himself is bleeding out on the floor of Oblivion. Everything about that scenario just highlights how great Klaus is (and I mean I'm not complaining, he's my favorite) and leaves all of Luther's alleged development only implied, not shown.
I know a lot of people disagree with me here, but it just didn't work for me. Luther is still the most one-dimensional character. And I think the staff knows this on some level, and that's why they had Klaus (the fan favorite) run off with Luther in the season finale rather than with Five or Diego, with whom Klaus has always been closer.
I also think Ben's character is left underdeveloped. But somehow with Ben it works better because he's also a tragic figure, and in 3 x 08 they cleverly had Klaus talk to Sparrow Ben about the sort of person his dead brother was, flaws and all. That one scene went far in fleshing Ben out.
I rambled. Hope this makes sense, LOL.

Hey. I’m not feeling the best right now. Can w I get some Ben and Five headcannons?
oh no !! I hope you feel better soon :(
Five and Ben were pretty close when they were younger which means that Five knows that Ben was a little shit
He might have the likes of Diego and Luther fooled but Five absolutely knows. He knows how much Ben could actually shit talk. He knows that Ben was not an innocent
Whenever Five irritated Ben too much, Ben would frame him for something. Sometimes this would manifest in an academy wide prank war which would inevitably end up in punishments from Reginald that everyone would blame Five for. Five. And no one would would ever believe him that sweet, quiet, wonderful Ben would start this sort of shit
Five fucking knows okay
However Ben was also like, the only intelligent conversation that Five ever actually had on the team so like, it’s not like he can just drop Ben (even though he knows what he did) because who else is he supposed to share looks with over Luther’s boneheaded plans with? Allison? As if Allison would ever admit Luther was being an absolute idiot
They had the silent understanding that Ben could be as much of a sarcastic shit as he wanted and in return Ben would let Five rant about temporal physics and complex mathematics and actually ask intelligent questions which occasionally led to breakthroughs
“It’s not my fault you can’t hide your own assholeness.” Ben informs Five with a straight face after Luther yelled at Five for three hours after Five rightfully informed their number one that it was actually Ben not Five who put dye on his toothbrush that turned his teeth green
Five mouths ‘I am going to destroy you’ to Ben across the breakfast table and Ben just serenely asks Klaus if he finished the math homework for their lessons today like Five doesn’t even exist
Five is twelve when he realizes that Ben is actually the devil
But actually he really admires it
Even if the way he realizes it is because Ben turns big eyes on Diego and says that Five was being mean to him, which almost gets Five a knife in the arm
(Five returns Ben’s stupid book of octopus facts, he didn’t even want the stupid thing he just stole it to get back at Ben for stealing his good umbrella jacket... yes he can tell shut the fuck up allison)
“I’m going to time travel.” “No you aren’t.” “You want to bet?” “Five. Five. We have been going over the equations for literal weeks. Did you even figure out the prime issue?” “Shut your mouth.” “Knew it.”
And Five does time travel and his second thought after “What the fuck” is “fucking Ben was right and can never know”
okay admittedly there’s a lot of apocalypse trauma and he finds the bodies of his siblings and then finds out that Ben died young and he’s just. there’s a lot going on okay
and then he travels back and ben is still dead and he’s kind of like... he can’t not save Ben but he’s got to make sure there’s a future or whatever to go to when he travels back in time and snags his brother up or whatever
except then Klaus summons Ben and well
“You asshole!” Five howls, pointing accusingly
Klaus is vindicated
“You can’t talk like that to Ben.” Diego says firmly, as though the time all of his knives were superglued to his harness wasn’t all Ben’s fault. As though that time wasn’t blamed on Five.
“No, no, let him speak.” Klaus says, like a man who has been forced to be the only recipient of Ben’s sarcasm and sass for a great number of years.
Ben has been dead and invisible for a long time and no longer gives a single solitary fuck about what his family thinks of him tbh, and with Klaus clean(er) and a lowkey grudge against Luther (because come on Luther, Ben was rooting for you we were all rooting for you)
So Ben has no problem being like “YES. ‘TWAS I WHO GLUED LUTHER’S HAND TO HIS HAIR AND FRAMED DIEGO FOR TIPPING OVER OUR 8TH BIRTHDAY CAKE.”
“How did none of you ever notice that I ‘acted out’ whenever one of y’all ended up peer pressuring Ben into using his powers.” Five grits out, because his family is filled with fucking idiots.
“In fairness,” Ben says with his arms crossed and a frankly unimpressed look on his face, “I also did it whenever you were being especially asshole-ish. Which was with great frequency.”
“I’m going to murder you in your sleep.” Five hisses.
“Missed that opportunity by a large margin, baby bro.”
and then Five screams with all his feral rage and tries to attack Ben because he isn’t often corporeal and he doesn’t want to miss the chance
Except Ben catches him in a hug and Five just freezes like a kitten who gets put in a cat harness for the first time and it’s great
“Oh my god I’m just now realizing why Ben and Five got along so well.”  - says every siblings with a braincell who has the sense to fear a Five and Ben team up
The first time that Five manages to frame Ben for something feels like fucking vindication
vindication, Ben

tua headcanon (amusement park day!!):
it takes them approximately an hour to leave, and it's all because of klaus who keeps on adding all sorts of ridiculous things to their itinerary
and they don't plan on doing so, but somehow they all end up wearing something blue, so yay team
"are we there yet" "i sWEAR TO GOD IF SOMEBODY ASKS THAT ONE MORE TIME--"
"ARE WE THERE YET!!!!!" "jesus, klaus, what the fuck is wrong with you?" "you didn't say exclamatory sentences weren't allowed, allison"
ben just rolls his eyes and mutters "lord give me strength" under his breath
most of the time, luther's too big to go on the rides so the duty of guarding their stuff falls to him instead
after the third ride, ben notices the sad slope of luther's shoulders and opts to keep his brother company instead. when luther tells him to "go on ahead, i'm fine," ben just gives him a Look™️ and plants his butt into the seat next to his brother, making a big show of feeling pukey and pulling out the books he'd brought for the long ride
throughout the day, they make a contest out of trying to make ben smile. obviously this ben isn't as cheery as their ben, but he's still ben, if that makes any sense, and that's good enough for all six of them
surprisingly, it's five who insists on taking pictures everywhere. when they catch him buying a photo album from one of the many souvenir shops scattered around the park, none of them say a word
vanya is surprisingly hyperactive, darting here and there like a squirrel all hyped up on sugar. they don't blame her; their father never took her on "family vacations" and even if he did, it was only so someone could watch the room while they frolicked on the beach
when diego dares klaus to ride the fastest roller coaster in the park--twice!!!--in exchange for shotgun privileges later, klaus all-but drags diego onto the ride and throws his hands up the entire time. diego ends up vomiting all over klaus' shoes as a result
when they stop for lunch, allison insists that they take a proper family photo. while they wait for their food, allison edits it properly and immediately sets it as her wallpaper
the haunted house is wide enough that even luther can enter, and they all laugh when diego scares five and he teleports to the end of the hallway with a strangled yelp
"very funny diego" "oh i assure you it was, five"
ben smirks but hurriedly covers it because he wants vanya--who is slowly shaping up to be his favorite sibling--to win
there's a particularly hilarious photo of diego with his mouth wide open on the jungle jam, water spraying his entire face, and his siblings decide to get one copy each for blackmail material
they end up getting matching ugly headbands from the souvenir store. vanya and klaus wear theirs with pride throughout the park, and even though diego makes a big show of calling it ugly, he doesn't take his off either
ben spends the entire day getting to know his siblings. for some reason, he already knows a couple of the things they tell him even before they finish their sentences; an unshakable feeling that goes all the way to his bones. it's slightly unsettling, but also easy to forget when he sees the way allison's eyes light up when he somehow remembers that she's allergic to mangoes and peaches
allison practically falls over herself with delight when somebody's dog trots over to her and demands a belly rub
all of them end up being pretty attached to the dog, so discussions to have a team pet are brought up once more
"save it for the team meetings, guys" "you're the only one who actually listens to those meetings, luther" "we'll be talking about getting a dog--" "say no more”
they all tease vanya when one of the guards mistake her for a kid and almost forbids her to ride on the second tallest roller coaster in the park
luther jokingly asks her if she'd like a ride on his shoulders, and is even more surprised when she agrees, and that's how they end up walking around the park with vanya perched atop luther like a particularly huge five-year-old
five buys her a balloon to add to the joke, but soon, klaus starts complaining that he wants one as well, so five buys another and forks it over: a large bear cub that klaus names "davey" and doesn't let it out of his sight for the rest of the day
diego manages to capture a snapshot of vanya smearing chocolate sauce all over ben's cheek. he doesn't tell anyone else, but he keeps it in his wallet for a good amount of time and calls it his lucky charm
the ben contest ends when klaus swan-dives into one of the fountains, and when one of the guards try to call him out, klaus simply runs away and pretends he's a completely different person when he rejoins them, and it's so stupid but ben can't recall the last time anyone was ever this silly and fun around him, and so he snorts, and klaus immediately starts to crow because "ha, that counts!!! in your face, diego!"
they stay for the fireworks show, and when it finally starts, all seven of them sprawl out on the grass, crane their necks back, and cheer along with the rest of the crowd at the pretty lights
after a few seconds, ben realizes something’s up with klaus because his eyes have gone all glassy and not-quite-there, and when he lays a hand on his brother’s shoulder, klaus grabs his shirt collar none-too-gently before he slowly comes back to the present
five recognizes all the signs of ptsd because he’s had them before, and before klaus can protest, he eases his brother’s head down into his lap and cards his fingers through klaus’ curly hair until he calms down. he’s still a bit jumpy every time a particularly loud one pops overhead, but he’s definitely more relaxed now that there’s something familiar to ground him
allison decides it’s been a long day for everyone after that, and no one disagrees because the sooner they get home, the sooner they can make cocoa for klaus under the pretense of being unable to sleep themselves
there's a pretty intense game of rock-paper-scissors in the parking lot over who gets to drive because all of them are bone-tired and want to nap
when luther loses, everyone mysteriously gets re-energized, and soon enough, they're singing cheesy 2000s pop songs at the top of their lungs
five keeps rolling his eyes and saying "i can just teleport home, you know" but klaus latches onto his right arm and vanya his left, and so he stays. they're still holding onto him when they fall asleep later, their heads pillowed on his shoulders, and although he makes a big show of displeasure at being used as a human stuffed toy, he rests his head against klaus' and only moves again when they're turning into their street
the next day at breakfast, klaus is still wearing the stupid headband

Pt 31 - Commission Issues
As you zoned out looking at the sky and wondering about the possibilities of what would come next you hear Luther call out behind you,
"Five!"
Coming back to reality you turn towards the sound and watch as Luther follows Five back into the apartment building. You decide to follow them as well but not before looking at Klaus and Ben on the ground and say,
"Whatever that was, I'm going to ignore it but you two need to figure out where the others went while I help Five with whatever idea he has next, okay?"
"Uhh...sure" Klaus groans as he stands up
"Fine, we will," Ben adds
You nod your head and turn around rushing to follow the two boys who were heading inside the building. As you followed them up the staircase you could hear Luther exclaim,
"Hey! Five, doomsday is still coming. We gotta think of a new plan."
"Don't you get it, Luther? It's over, all right? We're already dead." Five complains
"Then where are you going?" Luther questions
"I'm going to do the unthinkable." Five replies frustratedly  "The hell is that supposed to mean?" Luther follows up
As the three of you enter the apartment you hear Five mumble to himself, "I was really hoping it wouldn't come to this."
With that, he enters what used to be Elliott's bedroom and shuts and locks the door behind him. Luther leans up against it knocking and yelling, "Come to what, Five? Five! Come to what? Five!"
Luther bangs on the door calling out Five's name over and over again to no response. You step next to Luther and when he looks down at you, you say,
"Let me talk to him."
Luther nods at you knowing that you were probably the best option to talk to him. If anybody was going to calm down and reason with him, it was going to be you. As Luther walks away to the living room portion of the apartment, you phase through the bedroom door. Once you enter, you watch as Five paces back and forth complaining to himself,
"All we had to do was get together on time. That was it! those idiots screw everything up."
"Five..." You say
"I do everything to try and save us from impending doom and I can't even rely on them for the simplest of tasks!" He continues to complain
"Five." You try again
"I bet they'll blame it all on me again too!"
"Five!" You call out grabbing his hand
Five stops pacing and his head snaps towards you.
"What?!" He snapped
You were taken aback by his outburst, your eyes going wide at the harsh tone of his voice. You could see the frustration on his face and the anger in his eyes. You knew deep down that he was just worried, but sometimes his emotions didn't come easy and it hurt you to see him so upset.
Five was done with the constant threat of the apocalypse. With not being listened to and with plan after plan to get everyone home failing. He wanted to run away from it all but then he saw the shocked look on your face, and his mind flashed back to all those years ago when you both were children. He recalled the anger and frustration he felt at his father not listening to him and not believing in his ability to time travel. The rage that burned inside him because things had not gone the way he wanted. And he remembered the way you held onto him and the shocked look on your face as he took his anger out on you. Those moments, that day, burned themselves into his mind and plagued him through his whole life. He had always regretted that day, and probably always would but there was no way he was going to make the same mistake twice. Five's head looked down shamefully as he quietly apologized,
"I'm sorry..."
Letting go of his hand you take a step forward and gently cradle his face in your hands, tilting his head up slightly so he can look at you. You look into his eyes and the anger you saw before was replaced with pain. Softly you cooed,
"It's okay darling."
"No. It's not. I shouldn't have done it." Five replied hurt "We both remember the last time I took my anger out on you and look how great that turned out."
Five turned his head slightly to look away from you. He couldn't believe himself for directing his anger towards you when you didn't do anything wrong. When you've never done anything wrong. If anything he had done wrong towards you. You knew Five regretted the day you both traveled through time. He had mentioned it to you a few times but sometimes he'd have a far-off look and you could just tell that his thoughts of that day were consuming him again. He lived with so much pain due to his actions and their consequences and you wished you could just take it all away. You tilted his face back towards you and tried to comfort him,
"Five, I don't blame you for what happened that day, it was the result of years of cruelty from your father, and no offense to them, but your siblings have let you down consistently over what has only been two weeks for you. You had and have every right to be upset."
"You're correct but that didn't and doesn't make it right for me to take it out on you." Five calmly explained "It was wrong then and it's wrong now. I'm sorry."
"It's okay my love." you forgive
"How can you be so forgiving of me? After everything I've done?" Five questions
"Five I knew who you were before that day, and I know you now. People make mistakes, and you're no exception, but it's the actions you took after them that prove you're a good person and worthy of forgiveness." You inform
Five just looks at you for a second before stepping forward and wrapping you tightly in his arms. You remove your hands from his face and wrap your arms around his neck hugging him back. He loved you so much and god knows what he would do if he lost you again. He didn't want to lose his family either. He'd never say it especially because he's tried to show it to no avail, but he cared about his siblings. They were his family and he wanted them to live just as much as he wanted you to. The apocalypse was coming and time was running out for you and his family. And that worried him. As you hug him, you can feel his face bury into the crook of your neck. Gently, you stroke his hair as he quietly says,
"They make it so hard. I just want you all to live."
"I know, but you have a brilliant mind and I know you'll figure out how to get us out of here." You whisper back to him
Five shakes his head on your shoulder before he lifts his head to rest his forehead against yours.
"I don't deserve you." He remarks
"Say that again and I'll kill you." you threaten
Five lets out a light chuckle and a smirk comes to his face. He could not tell how serious your statement was but he found your threat of violence to be cute anyway. You and Five pull your faces back from each other and Five just looks at you for a second. He truly did not know how he could live without you. Nodding his head, Five straightened up and said,
"Alright, I have a hail mary plan in mind but I have to figure out some details first."
"Okay. While you do that I think I'm going to go check to see if Charlie is around. No guarantees he's come this way yet but just in case he has I want to let him know I'm okay." You reply
You nod your head at him and start to walk away but when you get to the door you turn back to look at him again and add,
"If you figure out your plan and I'm not back, just go without me I'll wait here."
"Okay." Five replies "I love you."
"I love you too."
You then exit the room and let your boyfriend be. He was going to need the time and space to figure out what to do. As you walk out you see that Luther had passed out on the couch in the living room. Stopping the apocalypse was a pretty tiring affair. You walked out of the apartment and looked around the street. It was pretty barren and a lot of shops were closed given that JFK was in town. Most people had probably headed downtown to see the motorcade later today. it sure would be eventful. You couldn't really see Charlie's car anywhere and you were about to turn around when you hear what sounded like a woman yell out,
"HELP!"
Immediately, your instincts kicked in and you ran towards the voice screaming out. Following it down an alley you stopped and looked around for who was in danger. Before you could turn around though something jabbed into your back and you started to feel dizzy. You tried to fight off whatever was happening but it was too late and you collapsed to the group. As your consciousness started to fade in and out, the last thing you heard was someone saying,
"I'm sure your brother will be happy to see you."
Back at the apartment, Five had finally come to terms with his plan. He needed to intercept the last person he'd want to see in this timeline. Himself. An older-looking version of him had arrived in Dallas no more than 10 minutes ago to kill President Kennedy and although it was risky, if they could get the briefcase from him, Five knew he could get his family home. He needed to prepare though. Rushing out of the bedroom, Five heads towards the kitchen and loudly opens the refrigerator door. The sound of the fridge causes Luther to wake. And as he gets up from the couch he calls out,
"Five? Five?"
Five ignored the calls as he grabbed a container of water and started to chug it down. When Luther entered the kitchen he looked upon the sight before him of Five intensely drinking water. Furrowing his eyebrows, Luther asks confused,
"Five, you okay?"
Five gasps heavily as he finishes the water and puts the container back in the fridge.  "I'm gonna need to be hydrated." Five states
"Hydrated?" Luther questions
Luther watches as Five frantically looks around the kitchen for something before having his eyes lock on the kitchen table. Five walks over to it and quickly grabs a bottle of baby powder off of it before sprinkling some down each sleeve of his shirt and then some down his pants. Luther grew concerned about what was going on as he inquires,
"What's with the baby powder?" "It'll help with the itching." Five responds  "What itching? There's itching? What the hell is going on here?" Luther asks before realizing "You do have a plan." Five does a few jumps and shakes to even out the baby powder he had practically doused himself in. Grabbing his jacket from the chair he walks past Luther into the living room of Elliott's apartment and explains, "Well, it's a desperation move, but since our brain-dead siblings are incapable of meeting a simple deadline, I got no choice."
Luther turns to look at his sibling and asks, "No choice about what?"
"I have to find myself." Five states looking at his watch "I just arrived in Dallas 15 minutes ago." "Should I be worried about you?"
Five puts his academy jacket back on before bending over and starting to stretch. If he was going to do this he needed to know he was dexterous enough to fight or run after himself. With his younger body and surplus of energy, it probably wouldn't be that hard. Then again it was only two weeks ago when he was still working for the commission as well, and even in his old age, he was taking people out left and right. As he stretches Five explains,
"Luther, if you recall, I was sent to 1963 on a job by the Commission to make sure the president was assassinated." "Oh! So, wait, your old self is out there." Luther says
Five stood up and looked at his brother. Finally, the wheels in Luther's big monkey brain were starting to turn and he was starting to grasp the plan Five had come up with. "Precisely." Five states "What, just walking around Dallas?"  Luther asks confused
Nevermind. The monkey brain was still a monkey brain. Realizing his nitwit brother would not understand unless he described it in the same way he'd talk to a six-year-old, Five emphasized, "Walking around Dallas with a briefcase that can get us home."
Luther's eyes go wide and a surprised expression appears on his face as Five watches the lightbulb finally goes off in Luther's head. It was honestly disappointing how long it took for that to happen. "Oh, my God. Five, you're a genius!" Luther exclaims
He may be a genius but the plan wasn't perfect though. There were significant flaws in it but it was a hail-mary for a reason. Turning to Luther, Five elaborates, "However, there are two significant problems with this plan. Problem number one: I am a trained assassin, arguably the most dangerous assassin in the space-time continuum. If I know me, I'm not going to react kindly to bumping into myself. Problem number two, and this is the real fly in the ointment here: you're not supposed to exist in close proximity to yourself in the same timeline. The side effects can be disastrous." "Side effects? What sort of side effects?" Luther inquires
"Well, according to Commission Handbook Chapter 27, subsection 3b, the seven stages in paradox psychosis are stage one: denial, two: itching, three: extreme thirst and urination, four: excessive gas, five: acute paranoia, six: uncontrolled perspiration, and seven: homicidal rage." Five explains "Homicidal rage?" Luther questions
"Yeah." Five states "Jeez, I don't know. This maybe isn't such a good idea."  "It's a Hail Mary. But what choice do we got, Luther?" Five exclaims "I don't know, you already seem a bit squirrelly if I'm being honest." "Look, Luther, I'm gonna need you to help me get through this one, all right? I...I need a spotter." "A spotter?"
"Yeah."
"What is that? Like, a wingman?" Luther questions
"In case the paradox psychosis gets too severe, I need you to help me stay on task, all right? So, whatever happens, whatever I say, we need to get that briefcase. Okay?" Five explains
"Okay, but where's (Y/N)?" Luther questions looking around
"I don't know. She said she was going on a walk to find Charlie but I guess hasn't come back yet." Five states "Maybe it's better that way though."
"You don't want your girlfriend coming? Don't you think she could rationalize with you more than I can if things get bad with this paradox psychosis?" Luther states concerned
"Most likely, and honestly I wouldn't mind some more steadiness from her" Five says
He then stops for a moment to think about the events at the Lonely Lodger Inn from earlier. He wouldn't mind that at all.
"Five?" Luther calls
Pulled from his thoughts he looks back to Luther and continues to explain,
"BUT if she's not there I can use my knowledge of her as leverage against myself. 45 years ago was the last time he saw her alive. He's sad, desperate, and blames himself for her death.  We can use his emotional turmoil to get the briefcase if necessary."
Luther looked at his brother shocked. He knew where Five was coming from but it was almost vile considering using you against the other version of himself. Like he had said that version of him is sad, desperate, and blames himself for your death. Withholding knowledge about you just to get the briefcase would probably be on torture levels for him. Luther knew how strongly Five felt about you and the two of you were together now, so he could only imagine what could happen with the version that hasn't seen you in years.
"You're going to use your girlfriend like blackmail against yourself?"
"As I said, if necessary I will." Five comments as he starts to walk away "Now, come on Luther."
"Right..." Luther says to himself
Leaving out of the apartment the two of them head out in search of Five's Commission self. Although both still wondered where you were.
____________________________
As you started to regain your consciousness the world around you began to flood your senses. Your mind felt fogged as your head rested heavily on a cold surface. Your eyelids drooped but you tried to open them to see where you were. Through blurred vision, you were able to make out an empty grey room. It reminded you of the interrogation room at the police station Eudora worked at. This definitely wasn't the alley you were in. You moved your body around and with enough force, you manage to get yourself upright but your heavy head still hung low. As you became upright you could feel your backside hit the backing of the chair you were in. You moved your arms trying to readjust yourself but as you did so you hear the sounds of clanking and realized there was something around your wrists. You were handcuffed.
"Maybe Charlie was right about not running towards danger." You groan
It felt like your physical being and consciousness were both moving through sludge. Whatever that person injected into you to knock you out was sure as hell powerful. You tried to think of a plan to get out but all of them involved your powers and you could just feel the fatigue run through your veins from the sedative. Taking some breaths you tried to figure out where you were and where to go from here. Listening carefully you could hear the buzzing of the light above you but also the sounds of people walking and chattering outside the room you were in. Gathering energy, you threw your head back so that it was facing up towards the ceiling. You moved your eyes around and spotted a door to the left of you. There were no real defining characteristics to let you know where you were. Maybe Reggie had informed the government about you and now the FBI or CIA was going to use you as a weapon of mass destruction. Maybe the Soviets had kidnapped you and were going to use you as ransom to the US government because apparently, the world saw you as the adoptive daughter of an eccentric billionaire. Either way, you didn't know where you were and you didn't know how to get out. Overall, this was a very bad situation. Without any other real options, you sat there and waited for something to happen. As you did so you could hear the door open and the sound of someone walking into the room before closing the door behind them.
"Good, you're awake." The voice commented
You knew that voice. It was the same one as the person who had knocked you out. Although you were still too sluggish to do anything about your situation you could feel a fire start to build. Rolling your head to the side you looked towards the figure. Across the other side of a table stood a woman in all black clothes with a late 90s grunge cut with a fake smile on her face. Narrowing your eyes at them you demanded,
"Where am I?"
"You're at the Temps Commission." They responded
"Fuck." You said under your breath
This was worse than you thought, and now you were wishing you were captured by the KGB or US government. You had no clue what they knew nor what they wanted from you and since you couldn't fight back, the best course of action was to stay quiet. No matter what, you would not reveal any information about the Hargreeves but especially Five. They had been on his ass ever since he returned to 2019 and you were not going to let them get to him. The woman before you looked over as you sat in silence.
"What, no more questions?" They inquire "I feel like you'd have a lot more given who I am."
"I have no clue who you are." You remark
"Lila?"
Oh. Her. Great. Letting out an annoyed huff you stare at her with an unimpressed expression.
"Ah yes, now I recall," You comment, sarcasm laced in your voice "You're my emotionally damaged, older brother's sloppy seconds hookup, who in reality is a vomit bag of lies and manipulation."
"Listen here you little prick, I'm his girlfriend." She snaps
"You ain't shit. His girlfriend is a corpse, six feet under and somehow she's still better than you." You scoff
As your confidence grew, you started to realize that the sedative was wearing off more. You started to feel less sluggish and although physically you couldn't do much your mind became clearer. You didn't want to tip Lila off that you were regaining your strength though so you stayed in your slumped position but kept a cocky look on your face. Lila slams her hands down on the table and stares at you intensely.
"I should kill you." She threatens
"Do it. I'm sure that'll go over real well with my brother." You remark sarcastically
"You a bigger pain in the ass than Five." She remarks annoyed
"Good." You reply curtly
The two of you stare each other down intensely, neither of you saying anything. After a few moments, Lila remarks,
"You're an asshole."
"And you're the walking embodiment of sad British cooking. Fucking basic beans and toast looking ass bitch." You retort
You watch and Lila's face contorted with a flurry of emotions. Shock, confusion, anger. They were all present. Lila then stands up straight once more and in a monotone voice states,
"I have a meeting to go to."
Turning away from you she heads to the door. As she does so you shout behind her,
"Ha! That's right, leave! And just know if I could flip you off right now I would!"
As Lila steps out of the room you can hear her say to someone,
"You watch over her for now and bring her to my mother's office in 15 minutes. Understood?"
And as Lila fully leaves the room another woman steps in. Closing the door behind her, she looks through the glass window of the door as if trying to check for something before pulling the curtain down. Locking the door she walks over to the table and pulls up a chair across from you. With her hands clasped nicely on the table, she gives you a genuine wide smile and says,
"Hiya! I'm Dot!"
You looked at the woman before you. She seemed kind but this was also the Temps Commission so you had your reservations about trusting her.
"(Y/N)..."
"Oh, I know!" She replies in an upbeat tone "And let me tell you, a lot of us down at case management are so happy for you and Five. A lot of us wish the process was sped up but we have no real say in any decisions here but gosh we're just so happy for you two."
You stared at her blankly. She seemed sincere in her congrats, but part of you worried this was just some ploy to get you to let your guard down. You shifted uncomfortably in your chair and quietly commented back,
"Uh...thanks."
Dot let out a small sigh as her smile faltered a bit. Giving you a soft expression she lowers her voice and states,
"Listen, I know you're probably hesitant to trust me but if I'm going to get you out of here you're going to need to."
"I'm not going to trust anybody here. Five has told me all about you all." You state
"I understand. Let me just do something to prove you can trust me. Please just don't run after I do it. It'll cause a whole lotta trouble for the both of us." Dot says
You watch as she gets up from her seat and walks behind you. You try to turn your head as best as you can to see what she's doing but between the sedative still working its way out of your system and the fact you could not turn your head like an owl it was difficult. You watch as she crouches down for a second and then you hear the sound of something clattering to the ground. Dot walks back to her chair and sits down. As she does that you realize the clattering sound was that of your handcuffs falling to the floor. She had let you go knowing there was a chance you would run away. If you were able to move better maybe you would but that wasn't a possibility yet and you were a little curious as to what was up with her now. Shaking your wrists out a bit, Dot comments to you,
"You're free now, but please don't run. Let me get you out of here the right way."
"Get me out of here? What do you mean?" You questioned as you rested your arms on the table
Dot looked around the room once more checking to make sure nothing was there to see and hear her. Looking back towards you she explains,
"The Handler is trying to take over the commission. I and a few other folks are part of an underground resistance effort to try and stop her, because if she takes the reigns of this whole place we have no clue what will happen, but we know it won't be good."
"What do you know then?" You question, leaning forward in your seat
"From what we can infer, she wants the apocalypse to happen and she wants it to wipe out Five and the rest of the Hargreeves. But Lila obviously has a soft spot for your brother and brought him here."
"My brother Diego." You state
You knew that it was Diego who she brought. Of course, it was. Logically, it was the only answer that made sense. Hell, she thought she was his girlfriend. And yet, there was a part of you that thought about your other brother, Dean. You knew it was unlikely that he was here. It was virtually impossible, but maybe if he was all of your friends were here too. The look on your face must've said what you were thinking because Dot reached across the table and took your hands in her own.
"I'm sorry about your other brother." She consoled
Your heart clenched at those words. Taking a deep breath you attempted to ask,
"I'm guessing he..."
"Yes." Dot answered, "Along with the rest of your friends."
You looked down and nodded your head lightly. You knew how the world ended. You knew that the reality you had known, did end. And yet, somehow up until now, you had been able to block out the true gravity of the situation. You remembered how you joked with Charlie that he was the only friend you had left and to stay away from fireplaces or else you would have no one. You truly had not grieved their loss for years and instead had evaded it with humor or distractions. But now you were faced with the truth that you had always known. Your friends were dead. The apocalypse killed them. You held Dot's hands a little tighter as you squeezed your eyes shut trying to keep the tears that were forming back. With eyes still closed, you took a few small breaths before quietly asking,
"How did it happen?"
There was a silence in the room as the air loomed heavy over the two of you. Dot then took a breath before answering,
"In their last moments, they were all together singing happy birthday to your friend Kenny."
You lifted your head towards Dot and opened your eyes. You nodded your head as you managed to fight back your grief and replied softly.
"...at least Dean kept his promise."
"I know this is difficult for you to deal with especially since things are already so stressful but we can get them back." Dot states calmly
"How?" You inquired
If you had a chance to save the Hargreeves, and get your friends back, you would take it, no matter what. You loved them all and nothing was going to stop you from keeping them alive.
"In the simplest of terms, stop The Handler, Stop the 1963 apocalypse, and return the original timeline."
"I'm in." You reply without hesitation "What do I need to do?"
"Lila knows that you matter more to Diego than she does, so she brought you here to use you to keep Diego in line. We're going to head to the Handler's office soon so Lila can use you as said bait. What you need to do is still pretend that you are too sedated to actually fight or anything." Dot starts to explain
"Pretend? I am still too sedated to fight." You state confused
"Not for long though." She replies "I went to our Metaphysics Division laboratory-"
She had to be joking right? The whole concept of the Temps Commission was crazy enough but a Metaphysics Division was honestly ridiculous to you. Cutting her off you sarcastically questioned,
"Metaphysics Division? What do they do? Turn decades into candy? Synthesize a person's memories from their DNA into an injectable? Create bodies for consciousness to be transferred into?"
"They already did the first one, I'm sure they could do the second if they tried, and they accomplished the last one until Five blew up the briefcase room which unfortunately shared a wall with the lab. They moved the lab location to a safer spot after that." Dot explained, "Point being, I stole a vile of adrenaline for you."
"Because adrenaline helps bring back my powers. That's genius." You compliment
"Yes. So during the meeting, you're just going to pretend that you're still very sedated but after that, we move into phase 2."
"And what's that?" You ask
"We're getting you out of here and back to Five."
With that, Dot pulls the vial of adrenaline and a packaged medical needle out of her pocket and slides them across the table to you.
"I'm not sure what your limit is so I don't want to be the one to inject it. Also, as a fair warning, we don't have much time until I need to take you to the Handler's office." Dot explains
You nodded your head at her and grab the vial and needle. You had watched Kenny do this enough times for you that you felt you could figure it out on your own with minimal problems. Opening the packaged needle you go through the steps to fill it with the adrenaline from the vile before injecting it into your arm. You weren't sure how much you were supposed to give yourself but you felt much more energized even in the few minutes after doing so. Dot turned to you and you knew from the look on her face that it was time to go. Grabbing the handcuffs from the floor you handed them to Dot before putting your hands behind your back. Once they were on you got yourself in the headspace of pretending to be somewhat sedated and started acting less alert and coordinated.
"Are you ready?" Dot questioned
"Yup. Let's set this plan in motion." You reply
Dot then unlocks the door and the two of you walk out of the room down the halls of the commission towards the Handler's office. In the office though, the Handler looked in disbelief at Lila and her pick for new commission security detail.
"Are you kidding me?" The Handler exclaims
"You said I could hire my own team." Lila states "Yes, but I didn't mean him, for God's sake. If you don't see the problem with hiring you-know-who's brother, then you're not ready for that badge." The Handler complains
Diego looks at the scene before him of the back and forth between mother and daughter. This was going nowhere and he was not meant to be here. Trying to get up and leave he says, "I'm sorry, but I really need to get going." "Shut up!" They both yell at him
Diego slowly sits back down in his seat as the two of them go back and forth with each other. "I can't do this job if you don't trust my instincts," Lila complains "Sweetheart, your vagina needs glasses. He is not worth it." The Handler criticizes  "Mum! Oh, my God."Lila exclaims embarrassed before changing her tune "This may shock you, but not everyone here likes you."
The Handler looks at Lila confused as she states, "Sounds ridiculous, but go on." "You need fresh blood loyal to us and not the old regime. I've seen Diego in the field. He is so much better trained than most of the assholes here. Why waste that when we can use it? He'll be my personal responsibility." Lila explains to her mother
The Handler turns her attention from Lila to Diego.
"You know, your brother Five and I have quite a colorful history." The handler playfully comments with a wink
Diego looks at her confused and disgusted. He hoped to god that she wasn't insinuating what he thought she was because if so he was going to kick Five's ass. Trying to both change the topic, and gage what she meant Diego replies, "My brother has beef with all except one person, and that person is not me." Diego retorts "Let me ask you something. When you're looking down the barrel of a gun, where do your loyalties lie, with your family or your principles?" The Handler asks "With me. I don't belong to anybody. Especially Lila." Diego retorts
The handler stares Diego down for a bit and there is a silence in the air. Turning back to Lila she states, "That I can work with. Run him through orientation and fill out his paperwork."
A wide smile comes to Lila's face as she happily exclaims, "Aw, thanks, Mum! I'm glad you're on board, but just to be sure he behaves I do have an insurance policy in place."
"A what?" Diego questioned
The door then opened from behind him. You had been waiting on the other side of the wall with Dot for a few minutes for some kind of signal to enter the room. You guessed Lila wanted dramatic effect, which was very villain-esque and very cliche. Walking into the room you made sure that you looked physically weak so that they wouldn't feel like you had the full ability to fight them again. Dot sat you down in a chair in between Diego and Lila before walking back outside of the room. Turning to your brother you smile at him and comment,
"Hey Eggo, how's it going? Did you get drugged and kidnapped as well?"
Diego's pulse begins to quicken as he looks between you and Lila. Anger started to build inside of him as his eyes locked on Lila. She looked at him from her seat with confusion.
"Diego, what's wrong?" She questioned
Diego couldn't believe that it was even a question of what could be wrong. How could she not see the awful nature of what she had done? Shooting up from his chair, Diego moves to place himself between you and Lila. He wasn't going to let her get any closer to you. She had already hurt you once and there was no way he was going to let it happen again. Not on his watch.
"What's wrong?" He questioned rhetorically before yelling "YOU DRUGGED AND KIDNAPPED MY SISTER!"
Lila did not fully think this plan through. She knew that Diego had a soft spot for you so she knew she could use you to help get him to stay and work as security. What she had not anticipated was his anger. She thought he would be a little upset but still happy to have you with him. That was not looking like the case though. Standing up as well, Lila tries to downplay the severity of what she had done.
"Diego, calm down, she's fine. A little sedated but fine." Lila explains with some nervous laughter
"Fine would be her not being here at all Lila!" Diego rebuked
The Handler looked at the lover's quarrel going on between the two of them.  It was unexpected but it revealed a side of Diego that was unknown before. It was impressive that Lila had thought ahead to bring in the one loyalty that Diego had so that he would be less likely to act out.
"I see you do have some loyalties..." The Handler comments "Good thinking on the blackmail sweetheart."
As you quietly sat handcuffed, trying to pretend that you had no ability to use your powers, you couldn't help but get irritated at Lila and Diego. Feeling the need to add your input, you cut in commenting,
"Y'know...I'm just putting it out there, but Eudora never would've drugged and kidnapped me to use me as blackmail because she was actually a good person."
"Shut up." Lila scolds, glaring at you
"Don't talk to my sister like that!" Diego reprimands
"Yeah! Fuck you, beans and toast." You add
"What?" Diego asks looking down at you confused
"Just roll with it." You whisper back to him
"Diego," Lila calls bringing his attention back to her "Look at it this way. At least she's with you her brother and not her awful boyfriend, Five."
"He's a pain in my ass, and I don't like sharing her but he's not an awful boyfriend. Everything he has done is for her." Diego replies
"I'm telling him you said that." You mention
Diego once again turns to look at you and in the sternest of tones he states,
"No."
He then turns back to Lila and continues to explain,
"And second of all, I'd rather her be with him than here because then at least I know she's protected."
The Handler was becoming less and less amused by this argument the more it went on. Deciding she was done with their petty bickering she stood up from her desk and commanded,
"Enough. Lila, take your little puppy to orientation."
Lila tried grabbing Diego's arm to take him away but he held his ground. No matter what he was not going to leave you behind, especially not alone with the Handler. Lila looked between her mother and Diego, growing increasingly worried about what would happen if Diego didn't leave with her soon. Lila tried pulling him along once more but he pulled his arm from her grasp. Placing a hand on your shoulder he turned to face the handler. Standing his ground, Diego demanded,
"I'm not going anywhere without my sister."
"Alright." The handler replies monotonously "Kill him, Lila."
"No!" You and Lila shout in unison
The two of you glare at each other before you look towards your brother. He was not dying just because he felt this need to stick around and protect you. You knew he was always going to put you first in a way he barely did with anyone else, but you were not going to risk losing your other brother because of his need to protect you.
"Diego please go." You asked calmly
Diego looked towards you before crouching down in front of you. Looking you in the eyes, he gently holds onto each of your arms. He said no words but you could feel his hands shake.
"I'm not leaving you." He stated, trying to keep his voice calm
There was a certain deja vu to the conversation you were having with Diego. Your brain traveling back to that day in 2019. You tried not to think too much about it but knowing what had happened after made this conversation even harder. You didn't want to make your brother leave, but you knew you needed to so he could be safe. You just hoped that this time things would turn out better.
"Diego. Go." You forced out
He looked at you sadly but knew you wouldn't budge on the issue. Wrapping his arms around you he pulls you into a tight hug, not wanting to let you go. If your hands weren't cuffed behind your back you would've held him as well but all you could do was rest your head on his shoulder.
"I'll be okay," you whispered, trying to reassure Diego of the decision
"I'm gonna come back for you." He whispered back
He let out a sigh before standing up and reluctantly nodding towards Lila to show him the way. You turned your head to watch him leave. Diego looked back at you one more time, hoping that he would see your face again soon. And with that, he left and you were now left alone with the Handler herself. You watched as she made her way around her desk and leaned back on it so she was now in front of you. She gave you a smile that was nowhere near as friendly as Dot's was. It unsettled you greatly. Instinctively, you leaned back in your seat as you stared quietly back at her.
"So you must be Five's little plaything," The handler comments "I'm so glad I finally get to meet you. I was hoping it would be on better circumstances but for some reason, Five never wanted to bring you around."
You could see why he didn't want you two to meet. Although she tried to portray herself as kind it was very evident that she was psychotic.
"Not much of a talker, huh?" She questions "Maybe a candy would help? Would you like one?"
She gestures to a bowl of candy on her desk. Honestly, you wouldn't mind one and you were so done with the day at this point that you were willing to accept the risk it might be poisoned.
"Sure, but uh...I can't really grab it." You reply shaking your arms to gesture to the handcuffs
The handler moves from leaning on her desk to behind you and undoes one handcuff before re-cuffing it on the armrest of the chair you were in. Still not great, but at least you were able to have some movement of your hands and arms. The handler grabs a piece of candy from the bowl and hands it to you. A smirk resided on her face as she watches you take the candy from her hand.
"Here have this one," she says before walking back behind her desk
As she walks back to her chair, you unwrap the candy and pop it in your mouth. It didn't taste too great. It tasted like stress and tears and sadness, but then again it was not as bad as the weird food concoctions you and your friends had made before. You crunched on it a little bit before swallowing it all. As the handler sits back down in her seat she starts to say,
"We've synthesized specific years into- wait did you just eat that whole thing?"
"Yeah." You reply bluntly
"That was The Great Depression candy." She states shocked
"Ah, that makes more sense. I thought it just tasted like finals week. Not bad though." You respond
The handler looks at you baffled. She purposely gave you the Great Depression as a way to knock you down and show her superiority but you ate the whole thing like it was nothing.
"Not bad? It was made to taste like blood, sweat, tears, and depression."
You shrug your shoulders and nonchalantly reply,
"It could be worse."
"It could be worse? What is wrong with you?" She questions before saying "Nevermind."
The handler took a moment to try and regain herself. Not even she was able to eat the Great Depression candy without gagging. This was a situation she had not anticipated but she wasn't going to be confused or intimidated by some child. You on the other hand felt a pride rise inside you. You tried to hold your laughter back as you thought to yourself, Now I've thrown her off her rhythm. This situation was bad but at least you were able to make it entertaining. The handler after reestablishing her "polite" composure brought a faux smile back to her face as she turned her attention towards you again.
"You are quite the individual. Just like Five, we've had our eyes on you for a long time."
"That's kinda creepy but alright." You comment back
"Well, we do monitor all of time to make sure that what's supposed to happen, happens. Of course, we were going to notice children with unexplained immense powers, such as yourself. Molecular manipulation is quite the gift."
"Yeah, you could say I'm the main character of this story." You mention with a wink "No one can do what I do."
"I'm sure someone could mimic your powers."
"Ha! I sure would like to see that bitch try." you scoffed "The dipshit would be writhing on the ground in pain for their hubris. I can only imagine what type of dumbass would willingly take on feeling the extent of everything that makes up this world without years of tolerance training. Idiot."
You couldn't believe the stupidity of her statement. You'd think if she had been monitoring you throughout your life that she would know it took you forever to build up a tolerance to feeling the molecules in the world. Before you started learning to control your abilities you blew stuff up as a child because you were in pain. Imagine having such a large ego that you think you could copy that without putting in any training for it. What a "yeah let me just try to surpass god" type of mentality you were getting from this woman.
The handler couldn't believe you either. She was growing more frustrated with you having some kind of counterpoint to everything she did or said. It was like you were prepared to be here even though it was clearly established that you weren't. She was just glad that the only power you had right now was the ability to run your mouth. The handler knew she was going to get under your skin though. She had her ways.
"You know, it's just so sweet the history that you and Five have. Always believing the two of you would find each other again one day." She states, traces of malice in her tone "It's something I thought about during Five and I's involved, and colorful history."
You furrowed your eyebrows. Did- did she think you were stupid? You knew she was trying to suggest that she and Five were a thing but they obviously weren't. Anyone with half a brain cell could see that. Your boyfriend hated this woman and hated his time at the commission. He said it himself, it was nothing more than a job. He absolutely despised these people, especially her, and currently was working directly against this organization as he always had been. And on top of it, everything he's done was motivated by his love for you. Even Diego who was not happy that you had a boyfriend knew that was Five's motivation. This woman was certifiably insane.
"Ma'am if you're trying to insinuate you fucked my boyfriend, I know you're lying. Intimacy of any kind, but especially physical intimacy catches him off guard." You elaborate unamused "Also if you two have such an involved history then why is that he spent his whole life trying to get back to me, despises you and the rest of the commission, and is actively trying to thwart you in every way possible."
The handler glared at you. She thought she was going to get under your skin with that comment and yet here you sat throwing it back in her face and getting under hers. Scornfully she rebuked,
"You know I never quite understood why Five chose you. I can't seem to find one reason to like you."
"Well, I can seem to find a lot of reasons actually. I'm pretty, I'm smart, I'm powerful, I cared for him when no one else would, I didn't knowingly leave him alone in an apocalyptic wasteland for 45 years." You retort sarcastically "And those are just a few of the many reasons."
"You know pride is one of the seven deadly sins," The handler comments leaning forward in her seat
"So is envy." you retort
The handler gets back up from her seat and walks over to you once more. Looking down at you with contempt she asks,
"You know what I see?"
"What?" you reply
"I see a weak, pathetic child who thinks that she's the center of attention in this giant book of life. A child who is so scared of confronting her past she hides behind a harsh exterior with only her words to defend her." She attempts to insult
It didn't work though because you knew she was wrong. She had no clue who you were or what you were like. You had her stumped and you knew she was grasping at straws to try and put you down. To try and make you feel belittled so that she could exert power over you. She had no power over you because the fact of the matter was, you were the one in power here, and you were going to assert it.
"Well, you know what I see?" You ask with a smug smile
"No. Tell me, what do you see?"
Still handcuffed you lean forward in your chair looking up at where she stood right in front of you. Lowering your voice you go on to say,
"I see a woman, past her prime, deluded by a fantasy of some kind of romantic tryst with a man who never wanted her to begin with. You have led yourself so far down a path of irrationality that you have convinced yourself there was some kind of connection that was never there. He was your subordinate, nothing more. And now here you stand, grasping at straws for some sense of control and power, in the middle of a failing coup d'état of your own making, because you feel like you are losing your grip on the reality you created for yourself. A reality wrecked by the very man that you convinced yourself wanted you back."
Immediately after you finished your statement, the handler's hand snapped towards you and grabbed your face. She forced your head up to look at her and you could see the rage in her eyes. You were winning this battle. Angrily the handler replied,
"You better show me some respect. I have the power to ruin your life, take everything you love away, I could even kill you for that matter."
"I don't need to show you shit. My life has already been ruined, practically all that I love has disappeared in one way or another," You retort "and just so you know, the only way I'll ever die is if I choose to let it happen."
The handler leaned in towards you and her grip on your face tightened. You could feel her nails sink into your skin a little more. You weren't intimidated by her though. She was pathetic and wasn't worth your time. When she got close enough to you a sadistic smirk came to your face for a moment before you spit in hers. The handler whipped your head to the side as she pulled back in disgust. Wiping her face off she looks towards you in anger but you sit there with a proud smile.
"You're lucky you make good blackmail or else you'd be dead right now." she comments furiously before shouting "DOT!"
Dot quickly enters the room and the handler whips her gaze towards her.
"Take this disgusting child back to her holding cell." She commands
Dot nods her head and quietly makes her way over to you. Unlocking the one handcuff from the armrest she redoes the cuffs behind your back before helping you to stand. The two of you walk towards the door to leave the handler's office but before you do so you stop in your place. Turning to face the handler you firmly state,
"Les chaînes des oppresseurs ne durent que tant que les opprimés les laissent rester. La liberté est inévitable."
And without another word you and Dot left.

"Well, there I am." Five stated
He and Luther had made their way over to the pub that Five knew he would be at. From behind a pillar the two of them spied on older looking but younger self. Five remembered this day perfectly. He had sat over at the bar trying to perfect the equation to jump forward to 2019. He thought about you a lot, wondering how you would feel about him coming back, if you would be upset with him...if he'd get the opportunity to confess his feelings even though it probably would go nowhere.
What a sad mess of a man.
"Hey Five, why don't we just grab the briefcase and run?" Luther questioned "Luther, I would never let that happen. We're trained to guard these briefcases with our lives." Five explained "Plus, it's the inherent paradox where this gets tricky. I'm endangering my existence just being in the room with myself."
"Huh...What do you mean?" Luther asked confused
God, how dense was he? Did Five really have to spell it out for his brother? Letting out an exasperated sigh, Five elaborated,
"Luther, try to keep up. If old me doesn't travel back to 2019 like he's supposed to, the whole thing unravels itself. I cease to exist. You got me?" "I get you," Luther responds
Five was not confident though that Luther actually got him. "So our best chance is to talk with him, to reason with him." Five continues "He'll understand. Trust me. I know myself better than, uh...better than I know myself."
Unconsciously, Five reaches back and scratches the back of his neck causing Luther to quietly exclaim, "You just itched your neck. That's stage two of paradox psychosis."
"No, I didn't. I didn't itch my neck." Five denies "Denial is stage one." Luther reminds
Five was not going to deal with this back and forth. He was fine. Completely and utterly fine. Nothing was wrong at all and no paradox psychosis was setting in. He was good. Snapping at his brother he states, "I am fine, okay? Let's stay on task, shall we?"
Five attempts to start walking over to his commission self but Luther puts an arm out to stop him. "Wait!" Luther says "What?" Five questions
"Maybe I should go first."  "Why?"
"Well, you'll freak him out. Bumping into your own tiny doppelganger? He will lose his shit. Just let me break the ice." Luther suggests
Five thought about it for a second and realized Luther was right. It might be better to send him in, although now he was wishing he had you here because you would probably be the best option to reason with him. But then again, he could see himself freaking out even more because your presence in 1963 meant something very wrong happened. Well, at least he still had the blackmail option. Five nods to his brother and Luther slowly makes his way over to commission Five. Luther awkward leans on the bar next to him and calls,
"Five."
Commission Five registered the word the person had just said to him but wasn't sure if he was hearing him correctly. Looking up at the person he sees a giant man standing there. Looking him up and down he asks, "What'd you call me, big man?" "It's me. Number One?" Luther replies "Luther. How did you...?" Commission Five questions as he starts to reach down towards the briefcase at his feet
"It's okay. Everything is fine. I can explain. But first, I need to introduce you to somebody. Just promise me you won't freak out." Luther tries to calm "What the hell are you talking about?" Five replies with wide eyes
"Uh! Don't freak out. No freak-outs. All right?" "Hey there, stranger." Academy Five greeted
The two of them stare quietly at each other. This was the worst of situations and both of them knew it but what was more important was making sure they were the one to possess the briefcase.
"How about we all sit down together?" Luther suggests
Commission Five leans down and grabs the briefcase as Academy Five continues to stare at him. Cautiously the two of them walk over to a nearby table that Luther has found available. Slowly the Five's sit down across from each other, their staring contest continuing on.
"I'll get us some drinks!" Luther exclaims walking over to the bar
Neither of them said a word to their other and tension loomed in the air. Neither knew if it was due to the paradox psychosis or just the fact that they both had to look at a reflection of their and future failures. Either way, it was an undesirable experience. After a minute, Luther comes back with three pints of beer in hand. Placing one in front of each person at the table he takes a seat and comments,
"Well...this is nice, isn't it? The three of us, together like this." "No." Both Fives say in unison "Somebody explain to me how it is I'm having a pint of Guinness with my younger self." Commission Five inquired
"Older, actually. I'm you, just 14 days older." Academy Five states
Commission Five leans in more as he remarks, "I have pubic hair smarter than you. How's that possible?"
"I can explain. You see, one hour from now, on the grassy knoll, before the president is killed, you break your contract with the Commission. I already know you're thinking about it. All those years in the apocalypse, we never stopped worrying about our family" Five explains taking a pause before continuing "About (Y/N)."
Luther looks between the two Fives confused. They worried about the family? It was understandable that they worried about you but the family too? Surprising. Commission Five's eyes glaze over for a second and he looks off in the distance as his teen counterpart's words resonate in his mind. He did worry about his family but mainly he worried for you. The image of that first day in the apocalypse never left him no matter how many years had passed. It was seared into his memory and haunted his nightmares. Coming back into focus, Five leans in and replies in a low voice,
"Of course. Why wouldn't I worry about her? You know what happened." "I do know what happened and preventing that outcome is the most important thing. So today, you are going to do something about it. Today, you are going to attempt to time travel forward to 2019. However, you are going to mess up the calculations, screw up the jump, and end up in this younger body." Academy Five explains
"Okay. So what am I supposed to do about it, not jump?" Commission Five asks
"No, no. I need you to jump. If you don't jump, I cease to exist and there is someone in this timeline who would not be happy about that." Academy Five states firmly
Commission Five's eyes go wide. Instinctively, his hand and covers the part where his locket rested. Were you here in 1963 as well? His heart raced a little and he excitedly questioned,
"You mean-"
"Yes." Academy Five answered
"...What's she like?" Commission Five asked in awe at the thought of you being around
"Ethereal." "I'm listening. Go on." Commission Five pressed
This is exactly why Five was fine with you not being here. Now he had bargaining power against his former self. The pathetic man was desperate for any crumb of knowledge about you. An unfriendly smile came to Academy Five's face as he explained his offer,
"I'll be glad to tell you more in exchange for that briefcase you're holding under the table. And I'll even give you the right equation for this time if you want it."
Commission Five looked back at his teen-looking self without saying any words. Taking the opportunity to speak Luther re-explained, "Yeah, yeah, so you go back to 2019, as planned, see (Y/N) and this time with the right math, so you can remain a full-grown man. In exchange, we get that briefcase that you no longer need. Timeline restored, paradox resolved. Everyone goes on existing happily ever after." "That's quite a bit to take in." Commission Five commented
"What do you think?" Academy Five asked "I think...I need to piss." Commission Five responded
He then got up from the table, grabbing the briefcase from the floor below him, and made his way to the bathroom. Academy Five watched with wide eyes as he walked away from the table. Grabbing a napkin, Luther began to dab the sweat off of Five's face commenting, "Well, besides the flop sweat, I think that went pretty well." "No, there's something- something doesn't feel right about this." Five remarked
"What do you mean?" Luther questioned "I don't trust him." Five stated "But he's you," Luther replied confused "Exactly."
Luther slowly nodded his head. The psychosis looked like it was really starting to pick up in Five. Luther hoped they would be able to get the briefcase soon so that Five didn't get worse. Downing the rest of his pint, Luther turns to Five and explains,
"Well, I need to go take a piss as well, and maybe as your spotter, I can reason with him a bit, alright? Just wait here."
Five watches as Luther gets up and walks away. He could only hope that things would all work out the way they should.
____________________________
As you and Dot quietly walked down the hallway you whispered to her,
"What's this phase two that you have in mind?"
You watch as Dot looks around for a second to make sure no one in the hallway was paying attention before pulling you into a side corridor. She takes one more glance around the surroundings before whispering to you,
"The resistance is going to get a briefcase so you can escape back to 1963, but to get to the briefcase room unnoticed, we'll need a distraction."
"Ah, I see where is going. You want me to cause the distraction."
"Yes." Dot replies "If you can draw enough security away from the briefcase room we can slip in and get one so that you can get out of here."
You nod your head as you phase your wrists through the handcuffs so you can have your arms free again. Looking back to her you state,
"I'm not leaving without Diego."
"Don't worry, I talked to Herb, another member of the resistance in the hall, and he said he was going to retrieve him." She reassures
"Good." You respond before asking "Where should I meet you?"
"Storage closet 2. It's on the east side of the building across from the period clothing department."
You peer around the corner of the corridor and look out into the hallway to see who was there. It was relatively empty with only a few people passing by. As you keep watch you ask Dot,
"Is the briefcase room to the left or right?"
"The right. Why?" She questions
"No time for questions. Just trust me. I'll see you soon." You respond
And before she can say anything else, you turn yourself invisible and sprint off to the left down the hall. Dodging the people who were walking by, you looked for some room that seemed important. As you searched, you passed the handler's office doors. Stopping in your tracks and backing up you look at the double doors for a second. A mischievous smile comes to your face as you take each hand and place them on the door handles. You heat the molecules of the handles and the lock inside of the door so that they all start to melt before quickly cooling it all down. With the handles and lock all now one solid amalgamation you knew that she would be locked in there for a bit. Turning back around you continue running off down the hall searching for a room that seemed important until you found one. Looking at the sign that said Tube Room you decided to investigate more. Phasing through the wall you entered the room and saw a line of different tubes spread down the length of a hall. Taking a look around to see that no one was there, you drop your invisibility and prepare for the mother of all distractions. Closing your eyes, you took a deep breath and focused on the molecules around you in this room. Specifically, that of the tubes that lined the walls Shooting your eyes back open you took off running down the hall of tubes, blowing each one behind you up as you passed them by. You could feel the pulsing of the explosions and the heat from the leftover flames as you continued to move forward down the hall. As you reached the end of the hall, you ran through the wall to the other side hearing the sound of the last explosion resonate behind you. You stopped for a moment to brush yourself off when you heard over the PA system,
"Security to the tube room. Security to the tube room."
"I better get out of here." You say to yourself
You look around for any sign that would point you in the direction of the east side of the building. You should've asked for more directions from Dot, but you were all too excited to start bringing this organization to its knees. Down the hall, you see a sign with an arrow on it pointing towards the period clothing department.
"Bingo," you exclaim
You start to quickly make your way towards the sign when you hear someone from behind you yell,
"Stop right there!"
Looking back you saw a significant amount of people in blue suits pointing guns at you. You were about to run away when you looked forward and saw another similar-looking group on the other side of the hall.
"Shit."
You were trapped. Granted, you weren't really trapped, you could just use your powers to sneak out of this situation but you had no clue if Dot was able to get a briefcase yet. Was this all the security they had or was there more scattered around? Dot had mentioned that Five blew up the briefcase room the last time he was here, so they had to have had more security for it. Security that you needed to draw to here.
"If you wanna stop me you're gonna have to kill me!" You announced
Guns drawn, the guards started to come towards you. You kept calm though and waited patiently for the first line of security to get close enough. If you were going to cause a distraction then hell you were going to make it unforgettable. Slowly, the 12 guards inched closer and closer until they were just where you wanted them. As this first line flanked you on all sides you gave them a wicked smile and within a second a boom rang throughout the hallway. It was all calm for a moment and then...chunks of flesh and blood rained down over the hall. There was nothing left where those 12 guards had stood, and at that moment it became clear that you were not trapped with these guards. They were trapped with you. You were Persephone, the bringer of destruction, and the chaos had only just begun.
Pulling out two of your knives you watched as more guards started showing up to try and stop you. You could feel the adrenaline you had injected coursing through your veins. This is where the fun begins. Realizing what you had just done the guards start to rush in. One by one you started to take them down. It was like you were moving in slow motion as you fought the crowd around you. Your movements becoming less so fighting maneuvers and more of a rhythmic dance. In a focused daze, you made your way around slashing throats and melting brains of all those who charged at you. With their guns drawn, they sent shots your way but it did not matter because all the bullets did was go through you and hit other guards. You watched the blood and the shit spray as swathes of agents dropped to the floor dead. The lucky ones were shot or blown to bits while the less fortunate dealt with the pain of slowly burning to death or being tossed back and forth between the walls like useless playthings. You bathed in the sounds of their agony. They all were going to suffer the way they made your darling Five do for years. And like the Roman empire, they fell to their demise.
When the combat had stopped you came out of your trance. Catching your breath you looked around at the bloodbath you created. The once white marble floors were now stained with rivers of red. You were victorious in your battle, and like the Queen of Hell, your destruction reigned over this place. You turned to walk away and head towards the storage closet when the sound of a gun rang out and pain came to your arm. You looked down and saw that a bullet had grazed your forearm leaving behind a wound. Your head shot back in anger to see where the shot hand came from. One guard was still alive, paralyzed from the waist down but still alive. You made your way towards them and they tried to shoot again but they were all out of bullets. Slowly, you crouched down to them on the floor, your eyes ignited with flames and you said in a low tone,
"You missed."
Reaching into their chest you ripped out their heart and crushed it in front of them. You watched as the light quickly slipped from your eyes. Letting out a huff you placed two fingers over your wound and used your powers to cauterize it. You were done here and made your way towards the rendezvous point. As you walked that way the adrenaline started to wear off and you started to fully realize what had gone down. Urgency set in as you saw the blood you were covered in and realized you need to get out of here. Finally seeing the clothing department you ran into it real quick and changed clothes, using some scrap cloths and a water bottle you found to wipe the blood off of you. You then raced across the hall to storage closet 2 where Dot, Diego and a group of other people were all standing around.
"Hey everyone," You say frantically "We need to get out of here fast because I'm pretty sure I just committed a war crime."
"Oh, uh okay. Well, unfortunately, we couldn't grab a fully functioning briefcase in time because people came back to protect the briefcase room," Herb explains
"But, we still got one!" Dot explains positively "It just happens to be a one-way case. They become useless after one time jump."
"We've already set it up with the correct time and location. Halfway between FBI headquarters and the pub where Five is located." Herb adds "Here are some maps to show you how to get to those places."
You and Diego both reach out and grab a map.
"Thank you." You reply quickly
Diego turns to look at you,
"Ready to go, kiddo?"
You nodded your head quickly at him. Diego took the briefcase in one hand and wrapped his other arm around you tightly. Herb stepped forward and pushed a few buttons before stepping back you could feel the energy from the case start to grow as you tried to manage your breathing. Giving the group of people before you one last look, you say,
"Vive la résistance."
Almost immediately after there was a flash and now you stood with your brother in the middle of Dallas, back in 1963. You watched as the briefcase started smoking and making unpleasant clanking sounds. Finding a nearby dumpster, Diego threw the defunct briefcase away before coming back over to you and pulling out his map trying to figure out the path to the FBI building. It wasn't far from where you stood but every second spent standing around was another second closer to Vanya ending the world...again. Looking up from his map he looked towards you. You silently looked back at him and waited for him to say something. You could tell something was on his mind. Diego was torn. He wanted to bring you with him to the FBI headquarters so he knew where you were and didn't have to worry that you had been taken by Lila again but he didn't want to put in danger of what Vanya was doing. The last time Vanya strongly used her powers you were seriously injured and putting you right in harm's way of that was something he would never choose. Diego came to a decision in his head. It was going to take a lot to say this but Diego knew it was the best option.
"Go find Five. He'll keep you safe."
You were surprised by his statement. Diego had been very back and forth on you being with Five since every before Five came back, although he would never admit it.  But this plus the comment from earlier were the strongest confirmations that maybe just maybe, Diego was coming around. Although his comments gave you reason to celebrate, this was not really the time and you were also very worried about him. You didn't want to be separated from your brother especially if he was headed to stop Vanya.
"Will you be okay?" You questioned
"I'll be fine." Diego responds "Now go get to Five. He can protect you from the commission more than I can."
Instead of saying any words you just took a step forward and hugged your brother. It was brief because time was of the essence but it was enough to reassure both him and yourself that things would be alright. You pulled away from Diego and the two of you gave each other knowing nods before turning in opposite directions and running towards your respective destinations. Using your powers you made yourself lighter so that you could move faster. You had no clue if the commission was after you. You wouldn't be surprised given you had pissed off both Lila and her mom, the handler. It didn't take you long to see the pub marked on your map up ahead. You slowed your pace as you made your way to the door and calmly entered the establishment. You looked around for a second before spotting a familiar uniformed boy, sitting alone at a table. You walked over to the table he was at and called,
"Five."
His head snaps over to you. His eyes were wide and his face was covered in sweat. You were taken aback by how frantic and unwell he looked. You cupped his face in your hands and felt the warmth radiating off of his skin. As you tried to cool down the water molecules in the sweat on his face you said,
"Oh my god, are you feeling okay darling? You look awful."
Five quietly stood up as you still held his face in your hands. He appreciated you using your powers to try and cool him down but he was confused as to what you were doing here.
"How did you find me?" He asked
"I'm fine." you instinctively responded
"That's not the question I asked." Five states "Also are these new clothes?"
"Listen, the specifics of the situation don't matter too much right now but I promise I will tell you later. What's the plan?" You inquired
"I- I don't know." Five states scratching the back of his neck "I'm still working on it."
"Don't worry, it's going to be okay." you comforted as you brought him into a hug "We'll figure this out together."
Five wrapped his arms back around you and held you tightly. IF he was experiencing any paradox psychosis, at that moment it melted away for a bit. Just you being with him gave him a sense of calm even though the world around him was anything but that. He just hoped that this calm would last even after Luther had returned.
As Luther had walked into the bathroom a few moments earlier, he sees Commission Five standing in front of the sink looking at the glass eye that would belong to the future, Harold Jenkins. Walking over to the urinals he comments to Five,
"Yeah, that's a waste of time. Trust me."
A waste of time? It was one of the only clues he had. How could it be a waste of time? "Then why were you holding it when I found you dead in the apocalypse?" Five questioned
"No idea. But the guy it belonged to didn't end the world. Vanya did." Luther stated "Timid little Vanya?" Five asked confused
"Yep. Is more powerful than all of us put together. Turns out, she was pissed about the way we treated her when we were kids, so she destroyed the moon and ended the world."
"Fair enough." Five said nodding his head "This is perfect. We now know exactly what's gonna happen."
"Yeah, except it, uh, already did," Luther replies approaching Five
Five turns to him with plenty of new ideas rushing through his mind. Not only how to stop the apocalypse and get this version of Five to disappear. He was unnecessary. "Don't think, just listen. Forget about the little jerk-off's plan. It's way too complicated. A much better plan is for us to travel to 2019. All we have to do is make nice with Vanya, stop her from destroying the world. Easy-peasy." Five explains "Hmm. Well, that's actually...that's not bad." Luther responds "But what about Five? I mean, you? I mean, the, uh, young you."
"That's not me. That's a teenaged hormonal photocopy that got botched in the time jump. Besides, it's too late for him anyway." Five states
"Too late? Paradox psychosis?" Luther inquires
Five nods his head, answering, "Best thing we can do is put him out of his misery." "You're saying to kill him?"
"You're thinking about this all wrong. We're not killing anybody." Five elaborates "Look at me. I'm Five, and I will still be alive. All we are doing is getting rid of a mutant doppelganger."
"Are you sure you don't have paradox psychosis?" Luther questions concerned "I've never felt better in my life." Five states
I just don't know Five..." Luther responds warily "(Y/N) wouldn't be very happy to know her boyfriend is gone from existence."
Commission Five stopped in his place. His head slowly turned back to look at Luther who had an innocent yet conflicted look on his face.
"Boyfriend?" He questioned surprised
"Yeah. Boyfriend." Luther responds "But like I was saying, I don't know about getting rid of him, this would be like the third time she's lost him- you...y'all? And she's really powerful and she almost killed me once for insulting Diego, and you remember the bank she blew that guy's head clean off. I just don't feel like it's the best idea to rip that Five away from her..."
Commission Five hadn't listened to a word Luther had said though because once the word boyfriend had slipped from Luther's mouth his heart began to race. If that version was her boyfriend that meant she loved him too. No. That would be insane. Maybe Luther said the words too fast and so he said boyfriend when he meant boy friend. There was no way that she felt the same way he did. Could she? Did she love him this whole time? Did she die loving him the same way he loved her? No, they were just friends. Just...friends. Five wanted to believe that what Luther was saying was true and that she did love him enough to have him be her boyfriend but it just didn't add up in his mind. How could she love someone who abandoned her in a different time, who took everything she knew away from her and left her wondering till the day she died if her best friend was mad at her. It was impossible though. Five looks up towards Luther who still towered over him like he did when they were kids.
"The little prick out there won't tell me jack about her." Five complains before asking quietly "What's she like Luther?"
"Well...I haven't been around her much but uh she's very powerful, more so than when we were kids. Uh, I mean she definitely cares about the people she loves, and um apparently she was dad's favorite both in 2019 and this timeline."
"That makes sense. When I read her diary she wrote about a lot of the things he did for her. Was too much to be coincidental."
"Wait what? He did stuff for her?" Luther questions
"Doesn't matter. So she's here? In this timeline?" Five inquires
"Uh- I don't know where but yeah," Luther responds
Five nods his head.
"Alright well, let's head out then." Five comments
As the two of them open the men's bathroom door and exit both of them see a sight they didn't know would be there. Five froze in place and his jaw dropped as he looked ahead of him.
"Oh look, there she is!" Luther commented
He was right. There you stood. Alive. Five could feel his heart stop and he didn't know if he was breathing anymore as he stared off at you. The world faded away as his focus became you and only you. Five could feel his heart clench as he remembered the last time he saw you alive. It was 45 years ago, right before you died. He remembered cradling you in his arms, blood getting on his academy uniform as he cried over your dead body. Tears pricked his eyes as he took all of you in. You were smiling, moving, breathing and to him, that was a miracle. He could only see the side of your face but the little shit was right, you were ethereal. As the world came back into focus he noticed you wrapped in the arms of his teenage counterpart. He saw the gentle look in his counterpart's eyes as your hands wrapped around his neck bringing him into a hug. Five wanted a hug from you, it had been so long since he had gotten one. As Five stood there, he felt Luther nudge his arm. Turning his attention to him, Luther says,
"Alright lover boy, time to get your head out of the clouds and go interact with the love of your life for the first time in years."
"Ah well, no...we're just- I mean..." Five stutters
"Oh, we're just best friends. Don't give me that shit you openly yelled about how you loved her when we were 12." Luther ridicules "Now c'mon let's go."
Luther starts to push Commission Five forwards back towards the table and Commission Five's heart begins to race with every step closer. As Academy Five noticed Commission Five head back towards the table he held you tighter to him. His face contorted into a scowl as he looked at this version of his approach towards you. He could see the look on his face, one of nervousness and awe. Academy Five didn't like it one bit and if it wasn't for you hugging him he felt like he would've punched the old man right where he stood. You felt as Five tensed up in the hug and pulled back to look at him. looking up at his face you saw it was filled with anger but couldn't begin to decipher why. You followed his gaze to see what had angered him so and when you looked behind you, you saw Luther standing there with an older gentleman. You looked back towards your boyfriend whose face was still filled with rage and asked,
"Five, who is this?"
Five stared the man down and let out a huff before replying,
"He's me."

Chapter 5: Extra Ordinary
Tumblr media
Five years ago, Vanya Hargreeves began writing her autobiography, “Extra Ordinary: My Life as Number Seven”, less than two weeks before her sister’s novel, “One-Sided”, was announced in the papers. Those around who enjoyed her writing were buzzing with excitement, for it was the second book of her trilogy. (Y/N) was thrilled, herself, to be publishing her novel within the next month. Finally sharing her work with the world would have taken a tremendous weight off her shoulders, leaving her with only the weight on her bladder. While working herself nearly to death with her writing, she was with child for the second time, which added to her stress. Thankfully, she had a very supportive husband at the time to assist in anything she requested. It was in those times in which (Y/N) was grateful she decided to make something of herself rather than letting her past as Number Eight define her.
Once “One-Sided” was published, (Y/N) sent two copies out; one to Allison, one to Vanya. She figured her brothers wouldn’t want to read her romantic fantasy as much as her sisters, so she didn’t bother asking. Allison seemed ecstatic for the new addition, but she wasn’t too sure about Vanya, supposing it wouldn’t hurt to send it. If she didn’t want to read it, that was her decision. What she didn’t expect, however, was Vanya’s novel sent to her. After Jada was born, (Y/N) had taken time to read her sister’s autobiography. While Anthony was at work during the day, she’d multitask by reading and taking care of her newborn. She would quietly gasp at certain parts of the book before checking to make sure she hadn’t woken her daughter up. (Y/N) couldn’t believe some of the things her sister dared to put in that book. Some things she wrote were blatantly about (Y/N)’s own insecurities that she had trusted Vanya with knowing. Insecurities about her powers, her capability of being a suitable member of the Umbrella Academy. Vanya had compared it to her own doubts, stating that (Y/N) had no right to complain to her, of all people. Looking back now, (Y/N) could admit that it was a bit selfish to do that to her sister. Regardless, those had been personal and it was unloyal of Vanya to share that with anyone willing to read. Despite this, (Y/N) saw to promote “Extra Ordinary” along with her own work. Someone had to be the bigger person in this situation.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nostalgia wasn’t exactly what (Y/N) was overcome with when awaking in her childhood bed. In fact, she’d much rather have opened her eyes to the empty side of her king-sized mattress at home instead. She debated closing her eyes and pretending she had never drifted into consciousness, but sat up when remembering everything Five had told her the day before. If she remembered correctly, there were six remaining days leading up to the end of the world. She had promised Five to assist in preventing the apocalypse, and her drowsiness was not going to hold her back. So, she dragged herself out of bed and began looking for Five. She figured the first place to begin was his bedroom, so she stopped in front of his door and knocked. Hearing rustling on the other side, she asked, “Five, are you decent?”
“Decent enough. You can come in,” He called out, the door opening and (Y/N) stepping inside. He glanced at her over his shoulder as he fixed his white button up. “I take it you had a difficult time sleeping?”
“What makes you say that?” Her hand slid down her face, sarcasm in her tone. She didn’t need a mirror to know she had bags under her eyes. Five chuckled and moved to his vest and jacket, finishing with dressing himself. As he zipped his duffle bag closed, he glanced out the window.
“You tagging along today?”
“I plan to. I… suppose I have nothing to do.”
“Nothing, huh?” Suspicion hid amongst his words as he picked up his bag. “What is it you decided to do with your life, (Y/N)?” The question was simple, genuine, but the weight of it was suffocating. She really couldn’t go back to her normal, beautiful life after all.
“I… found my mother,” She slowly started out, carefully watching as Five curiously glanced up at her under his dark brows. “I became an author… and a mother.”
Suddenly, Five couldn’t breathe. He had anticipated this conversation, prepared himself for everything (Y/N) had accomplished while he was gone. But nothing could have prepared him for the stab in the heart at the mention of her having children. Children with someone who wasn’t him. It was stupidly selfish, he knew, to expect her to wait for him, to do anything else with her life except for the things he longed to do with her. Past the pain, however, he was happy for her. Something in him knew that (Y/N) would one day make a wonderful mother. She was patient, selfless, caring, and oh, how he wished he could’ve been the one. He didn’t even want to ask about the individual she had trusted enough to raise children with her.
His hesitancy to respond worried (Y/N) and suddenly she wanted to apologize. But for what? Her success, her marriage, her children? She had every right to those and she shouldn’t have to apologize. Her concern washed away when Five raised his brows in acknowledgement, opening the window. “Really? A mother? That’s great, Starlight…” God, that nickname… She thought. Why does everything feel so complicated now? Her feet moved her to follow him out of the window and down the fire escape. She thought it was best to not continue the conversation for now.
“Dammit, where’s Dad’s stuff?” The two heard an irritated groan on their way down. (Y/N) craned her neck to see Klaus digging through the dumpster. “Shut up! I’m trying to find whatever… priceless crap was in that priceless box so that Pogo will get off my ass!”
“I’d ask what you’re up to, Klaus, but then it occurred to me…,” Five turned to his brother. “I don’t care.” His useless comment earned an eye roll from (Y/N). Klaus glanced up at the two with a small laugh.
“Hey! You know there are easier ways out of the house, buddy? And bringing little (Y/N) along, too? Whatever could you two be up to?”
“This way of leaving involved the least amount of talking,” Five hopped off the ladder, helping (Y/N) down afterwards. “Or so I thought.”
“Klaus,” The eighth Hargreeves made her way closer to the dumpster. “Is Ben there?”
“Yes, dear, he says hi.” His hand waved in Ben’s supposed direction, (Y/N) softly smiling at her ghost brother. “So, hey, you two need any more company today? I could, uh… clear my schedule.” His eyes shifted to Five as he took a drink from his flask.
“Looks like you’ve got your hands full.” The boy falsely smiled.
“Oh, this? No, no. I can do this whenever. I’m just- I just misplaced something. That’s all.” He then fell into the trash as (Y/N) joined her traveling companion at his side. After a few seconds, Klaus reappeared with a bagel. “Oh! Found it! Thank god!” (Y/N) nearly gagged as he began to chew on it, muffling a ‘delicious’ in forced content.
“I’m done funding your drug habit.” Five spit out before walking away. She followed him and waved at Klaus, barely listening to him yelling after them as they climbed into a plumbing van.
“Why are we stealing a van?”
“Shush.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once again, the two teenagers found themselves in front of Meritech Prosthetics. (Y/N) watched as Lance entered the building before sighing. “We’re really gonna sit here and spy on the man?”
“You got a better idea?” Five only kept his stare on him.
“I guess not… What’s the bag for, then?”
Five immediately turned his attention to the duffle bag he brought with them. “Oh, shit,” He muttered before unzipping it. “Hey,” He softly greeted before handing a bottle of alcohol to (Y/N). She blinked once, twice, thrice when he brought out the top half of a bald mannequin and set it between them. “Sorry you were in there for so long, Delores.”
“Wait,” (Y/N) choked. “That’s Delores?! The one you were with for over thirty years?!”
“Well, obviously,” Five frowned before turning back to ‘Delores’. “This is (Y/N), Delores. You know… the one I told you about.”
“You… talk about me to the mannequin? Should I be flattered or weirded out?”
“Oh, be quiet,” Five sighed and turned away. (Y/N) suddenly felt silly for being jealous last night. “No, I’m not drunk.”
“What?” (Y/N) frowned at the boy, who shook his head.
“Talking to Delores. She thinks I’m- Yes, it’s about the eye thing. This is the place it was made. Or… will be made,” His eyes moved up to his human friend. “We just have to wait…”
He’s actually talking to the mannequin, (Y/N) thought as she turned forward, eyes wide. So, that was what the apocalypse had done to him. She felt bad for him now. Initially, her heart warmed at the thought of Five finding someone to love, but knowing that his mind had gone somewhere far away enough for him to turn to a mannequin for comfort…
“So, (Y/N),” He started, his gaze once again trained on the building before them. “Your children… tell me about them.” Truth be told, Five wanted to know how much they had gotten from their mother. Were they just as humorous? Just as passionate? As wonderful? (Y/N) let out a heartfelt laugh as she closed her eyes.
“Where do I even begin? Michael, he’s… so intelligent. He has the highest reading level in his class and they’re thinking of letting him skip the first grade. He’s such a big help at home with his little sister… I swear, he’s a little man. He’s always trying to test my knowledge. Tries to get me to solve his ‘really hard’ math homework problems…,” She chuckled, Five looking at her with an unreadable expression. “And Jada… she’s such a character. No matter how many times I teach her the days of the week, she always gets them wrong… She wakes me up every morning, trying to guess. I say ‘Jada, if yesterday was Wednesday, what is today?’ and she just starts listing off every wrong answer… She’s a performer, too. I enrolled her into dance classes. Oh, it’s her favorite thing to do… And I’ll admit, she’s good at it. Don’t know where she got that from. Definitely not from me or her dad...”
Five tilted his head thoughtfully. “They sound… just like you. They think they know everything,” He joked with a small smile, (Y/N) playfully glaring at him. “Really, though… They sound like great kids… I’d like to meet them one day.”
“Yeah,” She smiled down at her lap. “I’d love for them to meet you… But I need to be an actual adult before I can face them again. Until then… It’s just checking up every once and awhile…”
“(Y/N), I’m so sorry,” Five frowned as he sat forward. “I- I’m going to figure this out. I promise.”
“I know you will,” She breathed and closed her eyes, her world slowly crashing down on her yet again. “Sorry, I need some air.” And with that, Five was in the car alone. Well, save for Delores. Outside, (Y/N) didn’t have much time to really be with her own thoughts before she heard Luther and Klaus’s voices nearing her. Turning to her right, she spotted the two walking side-by-side towards the van. Upon seeing her, Luther raised a hand.
“(Y/N), you need to get back to the Academy. We found something… and Grace might’ve had something to do with Dad’s death.” He gruffly explained, the young girl straightening to attention.
“Wait, what-”
“I can explain at the house, but we need both you and Five there for the family meeting. Is he in there?” He pointed to the vehicle their brother sat in.
“Yeah, but-”
“Great. Be right back.” Luther’s massive body brushed past her to get to Five, Klaus following behind to get in the back. Not waiting a second longer, she followed her junkie brother inside. When she entered the van again, Luther was trying his hardest to fit his body into the passenger seat as Klaus grabbed Delores, smirking at (Y/N) as he began to dance with the mannequin. She only watched him in disinterest. Once Luther was finally in, he turned to Five. “You okay?”
“You shouldn’t be… How did you find me?” Five’s question was answered when Luther turned to Klaus. With everyone’s attention on him, he looked up from Delores and dropped his smile.
“Hey, a little privacy, guys. We’re really hitting it off back here.” He began to caress Delores’s cheek before screaming when Five threw an object at him, Klaus using the mannequin to block. (Y/N) shook her head and moved closer to Five and Luther, the former fuming.
“Get out! You can’t be here! I’m in the middle of something.”
“Oh, but (Y/N) can be here?”
“Yes! We’re in the middle of something!” Five turned forward as Klaus joined (Y/N) at her side, poking her cheek gently.
“Any luck with your one-eyed man?” He asked her, receiving a head shake. Five sighed and turned to Luther.
“What do you want, Luther?”
Turning his attention away from the conversation between the two, Luther answered Five, “Um… So, Grace might’ve had something to do with Dad’s death. So I need you to come back to the Academy, alright? It’s important.” His request was met with silence for a split second before the time traveller shook his head.
“‘It’s important’. You have no concept of what’s important-”
“Hey!” Klaus interrupted, holding his sister at his side. “Did I ever tell you guys about the time I waxed my ass with chocolate pudding?”
And that was when (Y/N) tuned out the entire conversation between her family. She left Klaus’s side and pressed her back against the back of Luther’s seat, closing her eyes. She knew Five wasn’t going with Luther and Klaus to the house, and she didn’t need to listen to the bickering that would’ve led to that outcome. Her attention was eventually brought to Klaus swinging the back door open, huffing as he got out. She watched him slam the door closed and make his way towards the store across the street. Not trusting him in the slightest, she sent a clone after Klaus, telling it to “watch over him”. At this point, she was waiting for Luther to leave so her growing headache would subside, but it seemed the man wanted to talk some more.
“What the hell are you up to, Five?”
“Believe me, you wouldn’t understand.”
“Try me. Last I checked, I’m still the leader of this family.”
“Well, last I checked, I’m twenty-eight years older than you.” Five tightly smiled before (Y/N) snorted with laughter. The boy rolled his eyes and smiled fondly at her before Luther pulled his attention away.
“You know what your problem is?”
“Really hoping you’ll tell me.”
“You think you’re better than us,” Luther’s words wiped that sarcastic smile right off Five’s face. “You always have. Even when we were kids. But the truth is, you’re just as messed up as the rest of us. We’re all you have… and you know it.” Luther stared at his brother, as the boy slowly inhaled.
“I don’t think that I’m better than you, Number One. I know I am,” He hissed, Luther only chuckling. “I’ve done unimaginable things, things you couldn’t even comprehend.”
“Right...”
“Just to get back here and save you all…” Five stared out the window. (Y/N) sighed and grabbed Delores.
“Luther, out.” She ordered, her “big” brother turning to her with an offended look. “Five’s clearly not going with us. No use arguing with him either. So, just go and I’ll catch up-” She was cut off by the sound of a voice whooping in excitement. The three looked across the street to see Klaus running out of the store, arms full of stolen snacks, the clone following close behind.
“Hey, bitches!” He shouted as a cop chased after them, blowing his whistle. The clone turned to the officer and pushed him away with great force as Klaus was nearly hit by a car. Five’s head followed Klaus’s movement.
“I’m starting to wonder if that was the wisest decision…”
After Luther was sent out of the van, (Y/N) took over the passenger seat once again and set Delores down between them, Five quietly thanking her. “So… I’m going with the guys.”
“What? Why are you wasting your time, I thought you wanted to help me?”
“I do, and I will… But I don’t trust Luther to make decisions right now… I mean, if Mom really did have something to do with Dad’s death… Who knows what he’ll do? The least I can do is try to talk him out of it. I promise, when I’m done, I’ll come and find you.” She softly smiled, gently patting his hand. Five shook his head at her.
“You don’t have to promise me anything… I’m the one who owes you.”
“All you owe me is this,” She gently squeezed his hand. “You being here… That’s what I’ve wanted for so long. Now I have it. So, your debt is paid.” She chuckled. Five rested the back of his head against the seat as his eyes searched her face, trying to find anything that should worry him about her. But all he found was her warm smile and eyes that shone with affection. It suddenly felt inappropriate to have Delores around right now.
“Well, then, you should get going… You’ve gotta catch up with those idiots.”
“Alright. Don’t be out here forever, okay?” (Y/N) leaned in and pecked his cheek before getting out of the car and rushing after her brothers. As he watched her speed away, he tried to regulate his breathing, heartbeat increasing.

Diego walks through the corridors of the house. He sighs, taking courage, and knocks on the door. When it opens, his sister Vanya is at the other side.
“Hey, Diego,” She says with a smile.
"I need your help, it’s urgent," He answers nervously. She frowns and lets him walk into her room.
"What's up?" Diego sits on the bed and plays with his hands. "I've never seen you so nervous…”
"Nervous? Me? Please,” He scoffs.
"What? You’re in trouble?" Vanya stands in front of him and crosses her arms.
"Something like that," he finally says.
Vanya knows what her brother does at night. Using his skill with knives and the arduous training everyone had in their childhood, Diego takes it upon himself to aid helpless people.
"Do you need me to call the police?"
"No, not that kind of problem,” he says wiping his hands on his pants.
“Okay, I don't mean to sound rude, but you're not giving useful information. So maybe you better ask someone else for help?”
"No!" Vanya startles, pulling away a bit. "Shit, I'm sorry– I didn't want to scare you, just that- uh, I-" He growls. “You're the only one who can help me, Vanya.”
The relationship she has with her brothers is somewhat complicated. With Diego, she’s sure that she’s not Diego's first choice when he needs help, so this is confusing.
"What's going on?" She sits next to him on the bed.
"I'm not good at these things,” He answers through gritted teeth. "But I’m desperate, this’ll be my last try,” Vanya raises her eyebrows. “I have problems with... girls?"
Both of them are silent for a few seconds.
"Since when? How come only I can help you?"
"Oh come on, you're the only one with a stable relationship!”
She can't help a little smile.
"Sissy is not my girlfriend.”
"But you haven't ruined it yet, you're the one that has lasted the longest out of all.”
Maybe that's true.
"And Allison? She’s still with Raymond.”
Diego makes a face and scratches the back of his neck.
"She wouldn't help me for this.”
“Why?" Vanya now understands the big problem. “Oh… Are you sure you want to try?"
"You already regret wanting to help me?"
“No, it's just that- well… are we talking about Y/N? Allison's best friend?” She asks.
They met Y/N when they were twelve years old and since then she and Allison have been inseparable, actually, they all like her and over time she’s gained the trust of the Hargreeves.
"But doesn't she hate you?"
Diego nods, feeling hopeless. It’s true that for his last -perhaps only- opportunity, he needs Vanya's help and her attitude is not helping at all, or at least that’s what he thinks.
Vanya grins and Diego looks at her in disbelief.
"I'm not laughing at you, idiot,” She smiles. "I thought you’d already given up with her.”
"I guess I can still attempt something, but this is my last try,” He says.
From the moment Diego saw Y/N, he thought she was the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen in his life, but every time he tried to talk to her the girl would walk away or try to avoid him, so the only solution a 12-year-old could think of was to tease her; from pulling her hair, making fun, throwing knives at her -without hurting her- and as they grew older insults were added. In a way, Diego's plan worked, Y/N noticed him more, but it was only to yell at him. All this caused Diego's feelings for her to grow faster. He explained it to Vanya and she laughed again.
“So, all those bruises, yelling and insults were because you like her?” She says.
"Hey, I was just a kid!” He defends. "Now's different and I really want to do things right."
His sister is surprised, this is not a game, Diego’s asking her for help to conquer a girl and Vanya thinks it can work.
"I just want to add, I always believed you’d be a good couple.”
Diego's eyes light up.
“You'll help me?"
“That's right, brother. But you have to follow my lead…”
"I promise. Thank you, Sis! " he hugs Vanya very tightly making her squeal.
Later the doorbell rings, Allison's voice sounds soon after.
"Oh, that's right,” says Vanya with a smile, looking at her brother. “Y/N'll have dinner with us.”
Diego's breath hitches and his muscles tense.
"Oh.”
"First lesson, Diego."
***
After a few hours, they are whispering in the main hall, Diego’s about to panic as Vanya tries to reassure him.
"What am I supposed to do?"
"First, breathe,” she says. “It’s only dinner, relax. You can start with compliments, maybe of what she’s wearing, things like that.”
"Ok, ok, I can do that,” answers Diego.
“Well, let's go.”
Vanya takes his hand and they both enter the dining room, the other members are already waiting. Luther is the first, and on his left side are Allison, Y/N and then Ben, opposite to Luther is Klaus, then Five. Vanya tells Diego to sit across from Y/N and she sits at the end of the table.
Diego feels his legs shaking when he sees the girl for whom he’s trying his best not to scream. She’s laughing at something Allison said, the boy can't help but smile when he sees her happy. He sits down and waits patiently for dinner.
For a few minutes he only allows himself to admire her without saying anything, everything that Vanya said to him disappeared and he can't help but think how great it’d be the reason why she laughs, to take her hand under the table, whisper in her ear and kiss her cheek…
But his fantasies are interrupted by Vanya, who clears her throat to get their attention. While Luther helps his mother serve food, the others talk different things.
"It's good to see you again, Y/N,” says Vanya looking at the girl and she smiles at her.
“Same here, Vanya. How’s Sissy?"
"She’s fine, actually, we've thought about going to see a movie, any recommendations?"
Vanya could remember that Allison's best friend wanted to see a movie, and she had no one to go see it with, because none of her friends liked it, but she knew a certain man that would be willing to go without problems. The girl's eyes lit up, but then she grimaced.
"Oh yeah, they released a good one, but I'm not sure you’ll like it.”
"Are you still crying about it?" Says Five entering the conversation. Y/N looks at him offended.
"Shut up, I thought you’d be my salvation, but I only suffered from your betrayal!”
"That rhymed!" Klaus claps and Five rolls his eyes.
“None of your siblings want to go, but if you do, can I go with you? I don't mind being third wheeling…”
That's Diego's chance, but he doesn't say anything, so Vanya lightly kicks his leg.
"I could go with you!”
Everyone at the table looks at him in surprise and Vanya just wants to hit him again. Apparently yelling wasn’t part of Diego's plan. Y/N raises both eyebrows and huffs.
“Yes, right. I don't want you to be throwing popcorn at me during the whole movie, Diego. And surely you’d be talking all the time,” She rolls her eyes and Diego lowers his head. He knows the reason why she thinks that. It wouldn't be the first time that a movie went wrong because of their arguments.
Ben could notice how uncomfortable his brother is, so he decides to change the subject and now everyone forgets what happened. Vanya leans over to talk to Diego.
"What the hell was that?"
"I don't know, your help was useless!”
“You have to slow down, Diego. Baby steps, come on, give her a compliment!”
"Yes, okay,” He says nodding and they both turn to her.
Diego takes the time to think through his next move. Everyone has finished eating. When Diego leaves the dishes in the kitchen, he returns to the table and sees Y/N alone, perhaps waiting for her friend, so he approaches a little and notices her outfit.
He clears his throat to get her attention and smiles, hiding all the anxiety he feels.
"Hey, that blouse suits you very well, it matches your eyes,” While Diego expects a positive response, he receives the opposite.
"If that's your way to check out my breasts, let me tell you it's a pathetic attempt.”
Diego straightens up.
"No, no, no, no, n-o is not what I- uh, I didn't mean to," He stutters and behind him comes a laugh.
"My pathetic brother,” says Allison reaching her friend's side. Y/N huffs and they both leave the house.
Diego is startled when he feels a hand on his shoulder.
"Ok, that went wrong,” says Vanya. "Maybe you can offer to take her home?" She tries.
“She'll probably think I'm going to kidnap her," he says with a grimace.
***
The next day Diego and Vanya talk for hours about all the possibilities in which his comments can go. After last night, Diego can't take any risks.
"Hey, it's not my fault that your favorite hobby was teasing her."
"I know! I know I was an idiot, but I didn't think this was going to happen,” He says.
"Now we can only hope for a miracle."
Diego complains again and hides his face with a pillow.
"Vanya, have you seen my skirt?" Klaus says entering the room. "Trouble in paradise, Dieguito?"
Diego restrains himself from throwing a knife at his brother.
"No, Klaus, I haven't seen it, are you going out?"
"Oui, mademoiselle. Y/N and Allison invited me to a party- Oh! There it is…”
Klaus grabs the skirt from the floor and leaves the room and as soon as the door closes, Diego sits on the bed and takes off his pillow. Both siblings share a hopeful look.
***
“Now, tell me how the hell am I going to be able to talk to her if she's with an idiot,” says Diego speaking louder so that Vanya could hear him above the music.
"As soon as she’s alone, you must go at it,” she answers.
These days have been stressful for the boy, he cannot believe his bad luck and he’s not used to this. Normally he has no problems with girls, he’s dated and even had a serious relationship with Patch, why is it so difficult with Y/N?
Hours pass and it comes to the moment when Diego is left alone on the balcony of the host's house, cursing every happy couple that passes by, and snorting every time he sees Klaus with a different drink. But everything changes when he hears a voice complaining near the balcony.
The boy walks away from the railing and toward the doors, only to find Y/N yelling at the boy she was with earlier. Diego doesn’t know what is happening, but he can get an idea of how it will end, especially when he sees that the boy takes Y/N by the neck and forces her to kiss him. Anger runs through the boy's body and he's about to go and hit the jerk, but halfway he stops totally shocked.
Y/N steps away from the idiot and punches him hard on his nose, causing him to fall to the ground and scream covering his face with his hand. Everyone around him reaches out to help and see what happens. The girl takes advantage of the opportunity, runs out of the scene, straight to the balcony passing Diego without noticing him.
The boy follows her, he can see that she’s holding her wrist and complaining, so he runs around the house and gets a bag with ice as if they were chasing him, he returns just as fast.
“Hey,” He catches her attention and she looks up with teary eyes.
"Diego, please, not now," She says in a tired voice.
"I brought you ice, for your hand,” He says quickly.
She looks at him and nods raising her injured hand. Diego gently takes it and puts the ice on it. He tries to ignore the chill that runs through his body at feeling her soft hand.
"Does it hurt too much?" he asks trying to distract her.
"I've never hit someone before," She says with a grimace. Diego smiles sideways, he can't help but be proud.
"Maybe I could teach you one day, I'm an expert in punching and receiving every day…” He says without much thought and she laughs slightly.
"I've only seen you fight with your brothers, but something tells me that you are not lying," She adds with amusement.
"It was a great blow, surely he deserved it.”
"Some people don't know what ‘No’ means" She sighs.
"I think it’s clear to him now.”
"I didn't know you liked parties," She replies, looking at him.
"Today I had a good reason to like them,” He shrugs.
"A girl?" When he nods she laughs again. "I think it's the longest conversation we've had without insulting each other…”
Diego laughs too.
"In my defense, I've tried to have a civil conversation with you for a couple of days, but you weren't helping much,” She frowns.
"I know you well, Diego. You always try to make fun of me.”
His smile disappears.
“I don't want to do it anymore, Y/N,” His serious face confuses her.
"What are you talking about?"
Before Diego could answer, Allison reaches his side and checks on her friend, pushing her brother away. Y/N assures her that she's fine, mentioning Diego's help, but Allison doesn't care.
"I'm glad but– uh, we have a problem.”
"I'm not in the mood to have another one,” complains the girl.
“Ray’s car just broke and we have to go with some friend of his, I have to take Klaus before we lose him and Vanya and Sissy left already, so... there's no place for you,” says Allison with a grimace, “Sorry.”
Y/N complains taking the ice from Diego's hands.
"Are you serious?"
"I'm sorry, really, Ray said that he offered his place for you, but you know he lives far away…”
Y/N doesn't live very far, but she can't go alone in the dark and Diego knows that.
“I'll take you home,” He offers.
“Diego…” starts Allison, but he cuts her off.
“It's not a game, I promise. Come on, I can't let her walk alone, I can watch over her,” He puffs out his chest.
"Okay, but if something else happens, I won't hesitate in saying the magic words to you, brother,” threatens Allison. The boy stirs uncomfortably knowing very well what the magic words are.
Both friends say goodbye and Allison returns to the party. It doesn't take long for her, her boyfriend, and brother to leave.
"Do you want to go?" Diego asks shyly and she nods.
***
The two of them walk slowly towards Y/N's house in a slightly awkward silence. She keeps holding her wrist.
"What did you mean before?" she asks suddenly.
"What?"
"When we were on the balcony, you said you didn't want to make fun of me anymore.”
Diego fortunately remembers Vanya's advices: ‘Don't be too hasty’, ‘Tell her how you feel when you get the chance’, ‘Don't scare her’, ‘Be honest’, ‘No, you can't just kiss her and then run away’.
He shakes his head and keeps walking.
“Sorry for being an idiot all these years. You may not believe me, but I want to try to fix things with you.”
"How?"
"Good question,” He replies with a grimace. “I don't know, these days I've tried to be nice to you, but you think I'm still playing– I don't blame you!” He raises his hands. “You have many reasons, but– I just want to say that…” He sighs. “I don't want to continue with that.”
She frowns in confusion, but also wants to know more.
"Why do you suddenly want to do it?"
"It's not something spontaneous, I- uh…” He fidgets. "Since I've known you, I wanted to be your friend and I thought you were beautiful and all,” He says with honesty. "But you always did your best to ignore me, so I did all those things to get your attention.”
Confession takes weight off his shoulders. Y/N stays silent, thinking about Diego's words. Without realizing it, they both arrive at her house. The girl steps forward a bit, but Diego takes her free hand and draws her.
"Listen, I know it's a lot to think about and you might not believe me, but I really want to be with you."
She knows that he’s not lying, Diego had never dared to talk to her like that, but there’s still something that prevents her from trusting him.
"What are you really asking me, Diego?"
He thinks about it and smiles sideways.
“I’m asking for an opportunity. Just one, you won't regret it.”
Y/N laughs at his confident demeanor, then he gets a little closer, looks directly into her eyes and puts a lock behind her ear with gentl e fingers.
"When we were kids,” She says, taking a step back. "I used to walk away from you because I thought you were cute, I liked you, but when you wanted to talk… I’d get nervous and run away,” She admits. "Then you started teasing me so I thought you hated me and eventually I gave up,” She shrugs.
Diego can't believe what he's hearing and feels stupider. He could’ve had the girl of his dreams much sooner if only things weren't wrong. They’re both silent, she waits for an answer but Diego continues to panic. Finally she sighs again.
"One chance, Hargreeves.” She points out and Diego's eyes lit up.
"Only one,” He says avoiding the urge to jump for joy. She shakes her head, but smiling sweetly.
Y/N goes up the stairs of her house and before opening the door she turns back to find Diego doing a very strange dance. As soon as he notices her look, he stops and smiles innocently.
"Good night, angel," He says, smirking.
"Good night, Diego.”

════════════════════════
Your shoulders itched as you followed your sister through the pumpkin patch. She was getting picky over the pumpkins she wanted to buy for her son to carve.
The pumpkins were supposed to be a surprise for the kid with it being the first time he would be allowed to carve a pumpkin and all.
Rolling your shoulders, you pointed at a medium-sized pumpkin. “What about that one?”
She tilted her head, long hair flowing backward as the air breezed it. Why were your shoulders and back feeling so hot if cold air was hitting both of you?
Could it finally be...
You had had so many false hopes that you wished your heart wouldn’t skip that way still every time your shoulders warmed up.
Every time you were sure your soul marks were telling you your soulmate was close, and every time you became disappointed.
Often, you traced the tentacles embedded on your skin, bright in color and without texture. You wondered if your soulmate would like them if you ever found them — and most of all, you wondered why you had such strange marks.
Did they work with octopi? Or perhaps you had misunderstood the shapes and they were something else? Yet the thing you wondered the most was how had you met them, who could’ve touched both of your shoulders when you were a teen?
And why didn’t you remember them?
You lost sight of your sister which you should’ve expected. She was always quicker than you, and too antsy to stay in the same place for too long.
Taking off in order to look for her, you encountered what you assumed to be a family. The seven of them were obstructing the path so you cleared your throat.
All of them turned to look at you as if on cue. You couldn’t make their faces out, six out of seven faces blurred out and you only could see warm eyes and a bright sunflower.
“Well, are you passing or what?”
“Five,” the man you had been staring at chastised. He stepped towards you, hesitantly offering his hand. “I’m Ben.”
You gave him your name, pressing your palm on his to shake his hand.
The second it happened, you knew he felt it too. Your skin tingled and goosebumps erupted all over your body — your shoulders scorched for a moment yet you didn’t find the sensation unpleasant.
And then, Ben smiled at you — the biggest and loveliest smile someone had ever thrown your way.
“Did I do that?” you wondered out loud, unable to take your eyes off the side of his neck.
He nodded. “You don’t remember? I was trying to move you out of the way in that shootout and you grabbed me.”
“Well, I remember that day,” you blurted, “but not you. You had a domino mask on and—“ you interrupted yourself with a sigh. “Sorry.”
“It’s fine, it was something horrible to go through.”
Yeah, it was. You lost your little brother that day. Which you were sure Ben knew because his smile faltered. You gave him a smile of your own, small yet genuine.
He understood that it was fine, that changing the subject would be for the better. “What’s up with the flower, though?” After a pause, he assured you, “I mean, I like it; I’m just curious.”
“Oh! I’m a botanist,” you explained.
Before you could say anything else, one of Ben’s siblings approached you both, dressed in a colorful outfit and sporting sunglasses probably due to a hangover.
“We’re leaving.” He took a long look at you then dragged his eyes back to Ben. “You can stay here and flirt all you want, though.”
“They’re my soulmate,” Ben announced.
“Oh my God!”
Slender arms wrapped around your neck, startling you. The hug was enthusiastic, warm, childlike.
“Klaus,” Ben chastised yet another one of his siblings but unlike Five, Klaus only hugged you tighter instead of ignoring him.
You hugged back, timidly saying hi. Klaus shook you from side to side, elated. You wondered if your sister would be as happy for you as Klaus was for Ben.
When you were finally let go of, you smiled at both of them. Perhaps meeting your soulmate was doing things to you because while you had always been polite, you had never smiled so much in such a short amount of time.
“I’ll tell the others, Romeo.” Klaus patted Ben’s back. As he walked away from you, giving you his back, he yelled, “Be safe, children!”
“I’m so sorry,” Ben chuckled. “Klaus is... well, Klaus. I don’t know how to explain it, or him, better said.”
“I’m guessing not all of your siblings are as enthusiastic?” you half-asked, hoping he wouldn’t mind that you were looking down at your phone.
You typed in a flash, letting your sister know what was going on. She didn’t reply instantly, but that was expected of her.
“They’re all good people,” Ben sighed, “messy, but lovable each in their own way.”
Your sister’s reply came in before you could come up with anything to say to him.
Have fun. Text me if you need me to get you out of there.
Of course your older sister would say that, ever the protective one. She too was a little messy, and extremely lovable. It seemed that Ben and you surely had things in common.
The two of you continued walking through the pumpkin patch, talking about yourselves instead of looking at the pumpkins — his siblings had already picked a few, just like your sister.
“I feel bad that your family bonding time got cut short because of me,” you admitted. “Are you sure you don’t want to join them? We can meet up any other day.”
“Don’t worry, they’ll understand. They know for how long I’ve been looking for you.” He stared off behind you, biting down his bottom lip. His eyes fell on you then and he said, “I’ve never picked apples from an orchard.”
You craned your neck, observing the red apples looked perfect, as though out of a painting. “We’re gonna need a basket.”
The slight chill in the air prompted you to drape the hood of your jacket over your head, afraid it would rain. Ben huffed a laugh beside you, fixing your hood with his free hand. He carried the basket in the other, excited to pick apples from an orchard for the first time.
He climbed the ladder, inhaling the sweet earthy scent as he admired the beautifully contrasting colors. Ben tilted his head, examining the apples closest to him.
Hesitantly, he touched one. “Do you like this one?”
Nodding, you told him, “Pick whichever you like, Ben.” You smiled in assurance at him once he looked down at your figure, watching him drop the apple in the basket.
You didn’t understand how or why, but Ben seemed to stay still for a moment. You were positive he was staring at you, and the only thing you could do was smile even bigger.
He almost started babbling there, he caught himself before his tongue slipped. Ben wasn’t good at complimenting people, and the only thing he could think about was that your smile and the way it made your eyes lit up made him feel calm.
He snapped out of it and went back to the task, giddy.
You saw him grow more comfortable once he had picked a couple of apples. Ben filled the basket with sweet red apples, handing it to you as he stepped down the ladder.
════════════════════════
You carried two mugs with you as you stepped into your bedroom. Closing the door with your hip, you approached him in gentle steps.
Ben looked up, immediately placing the book he had been reading down onto his lap, keeping it open with his thigh. “Thank you, love,” he said softly, taking the warm ceramic you were offering to him.
He inhaled the sweet smell of hot chocolate, blowing onto the lip of the mug in hopes that he wouldn’t burn his tongue.
You waited for him to take a sip before sitting on the bed. As the mattress dipped while you made yourself comfortable, Ben watched you.
He had called you earlier, asking if you would be home soon. He needed to unwind after a bad day. At first, he felt silly, but you didn’t find his complaining pointless nor childish as he had.
You placed your hand on the back of his head, feeling the tense muscles. Softly, you massaged the area with your fingers, applying the lightest of pressures.
And so you found a rhythm, you would stop the movement while he sipped hot chocolate and would take the opportunity to sip your drink, and when he would put the mug down, you would continue the massage.
Once the mugs were empty, Ben slid his arm around your shoulders, bringing your head onto his shoulder.
He picked the book with his free hand and held it closer to you. “Read it to me?” he whispered, “I love the sound of your voice.”
You were halfway through the book when Ben’s arm grew heavy on you, his head falling on top of yours.
Putting the book to the side, you carefully helped Ben lay down on the bed. Throwing the duvet over both of your bodies, reaching over to turn the lights off, you made yourself comfortable too.
════════════════════════
You woke up way earlier than Ben — a force of habit. He hadn’t stayed over many times yet, but you always would let him sleep as much as he needed.
Still, a couple of hours later, he wrapped his arms around your middle from behind, kissing your cheek in greeting.
You craned your neck, smiling at him. “Good morning.”
“Morning. What’s the plan for today?”
“I wanted us to go find last-minute Halloween costumes, but I was going through my movie collection,” you motioned to the boxes in front of you, resting on the dining table, “and I found the horror classics!” You sang, “Sooooooo, we’re baking sugar cookies and having a movie marathon.”
He whined. “You know I’m bad at cooking anything that needs measurements.”
“Baby, the dough is pre-made.”
His eyes lit up. “So we’re having warm cookies without having to measure, or knead, or wait a ton?”
You giggled, nodding. “And they're really cute; they have little pumpkins in the middle. They’re in the fridge if you wanna look at them.”
“Later,” he said, resting his chin on your shoulder. “Have you already picked which movies we’re watching?”
“I was waiting for you.”
His heart skipped a beat. Ben held you flush to his chest, staring at the movie titles before him as you placed your hands on top of his.
Each of you took turns to pick a movie. Begrudgingly, he let go of you in order to walk into your kitchen. You had been right, he admitted when he opened the fridge, the cookies were really cute.
You placed a baking tray on the counter, letting Ben arrange the cookies. You only reminded him to space them up and nothing else, busy with making sure the oven was pre-heated.
“Cookies for breakfast, cuddles, and Halloween movies...” he sighed deeply. “Sounds like the perfect day.”
“Yeah? Who said you would get any cuddles?” you asked teasingly.
He playfully frowned. “No cuddles? What is this? Hell?”
You chuckled, sliding the tray into the oven. As you stood straight, you felt Ben reach for you. Allowing him to pull you closer, you turned to face him.
“I’m so happy I found you.” He kissed your forehead, hugging you by the waist.
“Me too.”
“Yeah? You’ll give me cuddles because you’re happy to have found me, then?”
“You already know I will, don’t you?”
He hummed, smiling down at you as you shifted to gaze at him. God, he really loved your eyes. “And I’ll hug you tighter if you get scared.”
You knew he would.

______________________________________________________________
There was not much that could be said to someone who sees themselves as unlovable. That feeling is deeply rooted inside their mind and heart not seeing any sort of affection as genuine except if it was expected. They could accept if a sibling loves them or if their parents do although in his case he was nothing more than a number to his father; more precisely number six from seven children.
The number already made him feel as if he didn’t worth much, despite that he didn’t see his sister, number seven as if she was less worthy. It seems kind of silly as he could see the worth in others but monster inside himself, maybe that was because there was a monster inside him. He sometimes wondered if his powers made him a monster as well; if he was just an extension of the monster. And those thoughts were just a small portion of hundreds of them, hundreds which every day reminded him of who and what he was and with that, they were pressing him closer to the ground. However, nothing ever hurt as listening to the words of his soulmate.
He was aware that everyone had one person who was going to complete them; the person who is going to love them unconditionally, but it seemed that it wasn’t the same when you are a monster and he couldn’t do anything about it. He couldn’t change what he was or what he could do, but it would be a lie if he said that he never tried. He tried many times to be somebody else, he even lived so many lives with the books he read however all that those books had and he didn’t was the conclusion and ending; he had neither. His life has only just begun, he was still a young man, but nothing could change his perspective, not his brothers, or his sisters maybe not even his soulmate. He didn’t even have to question himself if his soulmate would make him believe that he was more than a monster as he was well aware that they didn’t want him, so there wasn’t much left in life for him. He could’ve stopped for a moment and see that you can be happy without a soulmate just as his brother was for a while, however in the end it seems that it was impossible as Diego was now miserable. So what was left for him was missions his father sent him onto, but there was something different than before considering them. Used to, he would do anything to come home alive in hopes to meet his soulmate, but now, there was nothing to go home to.
______________________________________________________________
Two weeks have passed by and your life was still stuck in the moment. It was stuck in the time when your heart was broken. It wasn’t just broken, it was ripped from your body and thrown to the ground as if it worth nothing.
And the same day it happened, you did the same thing to somebody else; to your soulmate. The mere thought of it made you sick in your stomach. You couldn’t understand how you could let yourself to hurt your soulmate so much. You could’ve said anything else, you could’ve said that you needed time, you could’ve said anything yet you decided at the moment to break them. Maybe it was just because you wanted them to hate you; maybe you didn’t want to leave any room for the possibility of you two. Maybe you just tore him apart,  so that time wouldn’t do that to you when it takes him away. Now, that wasn’t even in question, not even after his brother tried to reassure you. That made it even more locked and sealed as his brother had to be the man you love.
Diego didn’t come to you only once, no, he came almost every day. You were pretty sure that it was guilt forcing him to get you and his brother together. You were sure that he felt disgusted by his actions and that he wished that he never met you. Yet it still hurt you every time when you would tell him to leave. It hurt mostly because not even once has he shown that he missed you, not even once he asked for another chance. It was always as if you were strangers with him wanting happiness for his brother not caring for your own.
You felt miserable, broken whenever his eyes would lock with yours. Once they were filled with love, but now when you would look at them only shame could be found. And it saddened you even more, as no longer were you a treasured love, no you have become a shameful regret to the only person you ever truly loved. So, when you now look back to the time when you thought he loved you, to the time when there was hope in your heart and even thoughts that what you had was love that could be compared to soulmates, you can only laugh at yourself for being ridicules. You can only lower your head with eyes fixated on the ground and wait for the one you cherish to walk away, again.
With the time passing by, the visits were becoming more frequent as your soulmate seemed to be hanging onto a thin thread. And there was nobody else except you who could offer them your hand, yet you refused. Every time your former love came to you; you turned your back to your soulmate. You indirectly played with the life of the one you were supposed to cherish. It hurt you deeply, yet you couldn’t force yourself to go and see the one whose initials were marked onto your skin. You couldn’t face him as there were so much shame and guilt filling your heart, however, the one thing that didn’t let you go to him was that your heart couldn’t and didn’t want to let him in. There was nothing that you could tell him to stop him from risking his life; there was nothing that you could promise as you couldn’t lie, especially to him.
So, there was only one thing for you left; to wait for your former love to never come back again or for your soulmate to find it’s ending before it had a chance to even live. And you found out which, sooner than you wanted, breaking you again and again as you were the one who sent your soulmate to the brink of death. It was your doing, your selfishness; you traded his life for yours.
Life was funny in a way, as you ran from the fate of your loved ones only to end up almost at the same place.
______________________________________________________________
You were startled from your sleep by rapid knocking on your door. It took you a few minutes to even realize that somebody was at your door, but even when you did realize you didn’t move from your bed. Your gaze was focused on the red numbers of your clock which was telling you that it was two in the morning. So, it confused you and worried you as the knocks didn’t stop but only became more urgent. You reluctantly moved to the door peering through the peephole only to furrow your brows as Klaus Hargreeves stood there.
You placed your fingers onto the doorknob however you hesitated to open the door. It had to be something important especially as Klaus seemed as if he was in distress.
As you opened the door, Klaus pushed his way in staring at you with his eyes red and puffy.
“What happened?” you asked as although you would think that he could be high, there were no signs for it.
“Ben…”
Breath got caught in your throat as you heard your soulmates name. You knew that he became reckless however you never let yourself think that he could truly die.
“Is he alright?”
Klaus shook his head. “He…. He is hurt,” he said. His foot was impatiently tapping onto the ground as he was trying to gather his thoughts.
“Why are you here?” you asked. You didn’t want to seem insensitive because you truly did care about Ben however you made your decision.
“It’s bad, can you come?” Klaus stared at you waiting for a reply. He was hopeful that you will agree as Ben needed you at the moment more than ever.
You were reluctant but you agreed as it had to be pretty serious especially as it was Klaus who came to get you and not Diego.
And just like you thought that it had to be serious it was. Ben was in an awful condition hanging onto a thread. He was unconscious and his body was beaten and bruised, it was breaking your heart piece by piece. And with every day that passed by with Ben not waking up, you cried harder and longer. You cared deeply about him and nobody could ever change that and seeing him so fragile was too much for you to handle. However, although you thought that you didn’t deserve it, but after five days you were gifted with relief as Ben finally opened his eyes. He was surprised to see you there, but he wasn’t going to complain about you finally coming to him. Nevertheless, he knew it deep in his heart that although you were now by his side, he knew that you will never be his. But that didn’t matter as he only wished to be accepted, for someone to love him unconditionally. And for years as he was waiting for his soulmate it never occurred to him that soulmates don’t necessarily have to be in love. So, although it hurt him he agreed to be friends and he even urged you to speak to Diego.
______________________________________________________________
Fate can be cruel sometimes and to you, it was cruel more than once. It first smiled at you as you fixed things with Ben, only to hurt you even more as you thought that Diego could accept your decision. But it didn’t work like that, nothing was ever that simple. Ben could understand you, but Diego couldn’t and was even too stubborn to try. And that is how you found yourself in a screaming match with Diego.
“He is your soulmate!”
“Is it needed for me to be in a romantic relationship with my soulmate? Even Ben understands, but you can’t,” you asked. You couldn’t understand why was it so hard for him to listen to you and to understand you.
Diego shook his head as he couldn’t believe what you were saying. “I trusted you and y-“
You cut Diego off as you were tired of the thing he was saying as they weren’t true. “I never lied to you, Diego.”
“You made me think that I’m loved, that you will be there, but all this time you had somebody else. You weren’t committed.”
You stepped closer to Diego only to get hurt as he stepped away. “I was, I am and I love you,” you said through tears. You knew it in your heart that that was your last chance with him.
“No you don’t, you’ll get bored of me and then you’ll go to Ben, so you should do that immediately,” Diego dismissed you with no regards of your feelings.
“Is that what you really want, Diego?” you asked grabbing onto his hand forcing him to look at you.
“Yes,” he said without breaking the eye contact.
“Do you love me?” your soft voice came out almost as a whisper as if it would do damage if it were louder.
“I’m letting you go,” Diego stated, moving your hand from him.
“No, you are not. You are breaking me apart.”
“Just go,” Diego said walking to the door and you followed. You stood there for a few moments before he whispered. “Please leave.”
You tried hard to stop the tears from falling but it was futile. You took a deep breath before letting yourself to observe his face. You wanted to remember everything about him, every curve of his face. You smiled sadly to yourself and just before you were ready to leave you pressed a kiss onto his cheek. While lingering close to his face you whispered. “I won’t be coming back.”
And you stayed true to your words as you never came back; you even left that night only staying in contact with Ben who soon joined you with Klaus. Klaus found his soulmate it was one of your closest friends and even Ben found someone and you couldn’t be happier for him, but you stayed alone. You shared your home with them, you shared everything with them
But the hole and emptiness in your chest only grew as you couldn’t stop thinking about Diego. You never loved someone the way you loved him, and although you weren’t even together for really long you felt like your heart was broken and it broke even more when you found out that he has moved on and now you could completely understand what your mother and brother felt.

Allison is being quiet. Not that no one else is being quiet. But it’s the kind of silence that makes you think something bad is about to happen.
Maybe it’s the far away look in her eyes or that fact that she is sitting completely still, that has Luther on edge.
“What’s wrong?” he asks her through his own fading voice.
She opens her mouth as if to say something before closing it again, then reopening it. “I feel like I’m going to sneeze” – she cuts herself off with an involuntary breath before quickly warning, “I’m gonna sneeze!”
Luther drops his book out of his grasp before all hell breaks loose.
“Hek’shhew!” Allison leads a chorus of sneezes that sound from around the room.
Diego who had been slow to abandon the box of tissues he had been holding, sends it sailing behind him into a wall.
“Sorry!” Allison squeaks nervously, afraid to look up. She breaths out a sigh of relief when she sees the room still intact. Diego’s tissue box being the only casualty.
“How far did you go?” Luther asks Five who walks back into the room as he picks up his book.
“Only round the corner” he says, waving off Diego who offers him a tissue from the box he had just retrieved.
“Aww, I thought you were going to try beat the record” Klaus whines from where he’s sprawled out on one on the couches.
“I thought I told you I have no control over that” Five reminds as he sits down in the chair next to him. “And even if I did, I’m not going to try and beat a block down the street.”
“You’re no fun” Klaus complains, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Well, did you beat your record? How many ghosts did you conjure?” Five throws him a side-eye.
“I was smart, dear brother, and suppressed my sneeze.”
“See, whose no fun now?” Five rolls his eyes.
“Ha’ussh!” without warning, Allison surprises them with a second sneeze.
This time they weren’t so lucky and after the volley of sneezes does its round, it’s closely followed by screams of fright. Ben’s ghost having manifested in the centre of the lounge, tentacles flailing.
“Sorry, that snuck up on me” Allison apologises guiltily but it is largely ignored.
“I didn’t know ghosts could sneeze” Diego says, picking up the box of tissue that had once again gone flying.
Despite the fact that Ben’s ghost had been too weak to connect with anything, Five was still glad that he had blinked out of the room.
“Good thing he didn’t destroy anything” Luther sighs as he drops his book to the ground, having accidentally crushed its spine.
“Speaking of destruction. Should someone check on Vanya?” Klaus suggests.
“I’ll go” Five volunteers. After all it is the smartest option with him able to make the quickest escape if necessary.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The anechoic chamber still wasn’t a particularly welcome sight for anyone, but it was a vital mechanism if they wanted all the windows in the house intact.
Vanya had kept herself holed up in it over the last few days. They’d offered for her to come up and stay with the rest of them but she hadn’t wanted to risk it, and really neither did they. But she was happy enough down there. They’d made sure to move a mattress and some other bedding down for her, and she had books to read and a few other things to do.
“You still alive in there?” Five asks as he pulls open the door. There was no point knocking since she wouldn’t be able to hear it.
“HAR’USSHH!”
Instead of being greeted by words, Five is meet with a sneeze that shatters the glass of water he held in his hand. He purses his lips and freezes, looking down to the puddle at his feet.
“God, Five. I’m sorry” Vanya groans, leaning her head back against the wall.
“Nah, I’ll take the fault for that. Shouldn’t have brought a glass cup” Five admits his mistake. “I’ll get another one.”
It’s only a few seconds until he blinks back and hands Vanya water in a plastic cup. As he steps back, he pulls the sleeves of his sweatshirt over his hands, clamping his jaw tightly as it starts to chatter.
“Here” Vanya holds out a blanket to him, not missing that he is shivering in his water splattered sweatshirt.
“I don’t want to take it from you” Five shakes his head.
“Don’t worry about it, I’m hot at the moment” Vanya insists.
“Really?” Five’s voice raises a pitch. He was cold even before water got splashed on him.
Vanya nods to him and he takes the blanket from her, wrapping it around himself as he sits down next to her.
“You still got that fever?” she asks, her face slightly pinched in worry.
“Think we all do” he tells her as she reaches forward to place a hand on his forehead.
“I think mine’s about to break” she says before Five reaches out his own hand to feel for her fever.
They stay frozen that way with a look of concentration on their faces until Vanya suddenly laughs and pulls away. “Yeah, this probably won’t work.”
Five scoffs a little as he withdraws his hand as well, both of their temperature judgment being thrown out of whack.
“How’s everyone else up there?” Vanya asks as she leans back against the wall.
Five clears his throat lightly as he leans back as well. “Klaus is still adamant he’s dying, Diego’s constantly complaining, and Luther is strangely tolerable because he’s not saying anything.”
“And Allison?” Vanya prompts.
Five shrugs. “Fine, I guess.”
“And you?”
“Been better, been worse” he weighs up. “What about you?”
“Same as you” she smiles slightly at him. “Get’s kind of lonely down here sometimes. It’s nice for the company.”
“Believe me you wouldn’t have wanted our company before.”
“What do you mean?” Vanya’s brow furrows.
“Allison sneezed, Ben manifested tentacles and all, it was a real shitshow” Five labels down quickly.
“Shit!” Vanya exclaims, sitting up from the wall suddenly.
“It’s fine” Five settles her. “He was too weak to hit anything.”
Vanya breathes out a sigh of relief as she leans back, settling her shoulder against Five’s. “Would have been kind of funny to see it. Did Diego scream? I feel like Diego would have screamed.”
“I don’t know, I was out of the room” Five admits. “But I’m pretty sure everyone left in there did.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
For a while they talk about nothing in particular. Vanya shows Five one of the new books she is reading, and he tells her more stories of things happening upstairs. Mid way through recounting an argument Klaus and Luther were having over whether onion rings are vegetable doughnuts, Five suddenly throws off the blanket and strides a few steps away from Vanya.
“You all right?” she asks, quickly placing a hand out on the ground now that Five isn’t there to lean against. Her face twisting in concern at the sudden movement.
Five nods quickly while his chest expands sporadically. “Gonna sneeze” he manages to stutter out before he ducks into his elbow.
“Heh’isshh, hekishew, hih’isshh!”
Vanya should be concerned with her brother teleporting around the vicinity, after all teleporting even with control is not an ordinary thing. Though she figures that as long as she can see where he lands everything will be okay. And she can, watching him land over by the door to the elevator, back in the chamber, then in the centre of the basement.
“Heh’russhhew”
He finishes his final sneeze in the doorway of the chamber.
“Whoa, that was a lot” she states.
Five sniffles and shrugs before leaning against the doorframe. “At least I didn’t go far.”
He doesn’t say it but Vanya can tell that it took a lot out of him. “You look tired. You should go up and get some rest.”
Five nods minutely. “You’ll be all right down here?”
“Yeah, of course.”
“Just… yell out if you need anything.”
“Come on now, Five” Vanya smirks at him before he disappears. “You and I both know me yelling would be a colossal mistake.”

Note
for the ask meme: diego hargreeves 🥺
1. on a scale of 1-10, how ticklish are they?
A solid 9.5.
2. where are their most ticklish spots?
By FAR his most ticklish spot is his belly button, followed by his belly, sides, and ribs.
3. which spots are they not ticklish?
Diego’s basically ticklish everywhere, but his knees are one of his least ticklish spots.
4. what is their laugh like?
It’s so dependent; he squeaks at certain spots, especially when he’s tickled by surprise, but when his worst spots are tickled he turns into a shrieking, babbling mess. On his more mild-moderate spots, he tends to be very very giggly.
5. do they enjoy tickling? if yes, is it a fun platonic/familial thing, or kinky thing to them, or can it be both depending on the circumstance?
Yes to everything! He definitely loves tickling even if he pretends not to, and tickling can be either platonic (when he’s with his siblings) or kinky (when he’s with a romantic partner).
6. are they more often a lee or ler, generally?
He usually ends up as a lee, both because he secretly loves it and because everyone knows just how incredibly ticklish he is, he just has major Lee Energy.
7. who is someone in their life that they tickle often?
Klaus! He tickles Klaus a lot because Klaus a) is very ticklish and b) likes tickling so c) doesn’t fight back too much.
8. who is someone in their life that they get tickled by often?
Basically everyone, but especially Luther, Allison, Ben, Five, and any romantic partner as soon as they discover just how ticklish he is.
9. does the word “tickle” or any variation of embarrass them?
Yes omg Diego is so WEAK for hearing the t word, he blushes immediately and denies that he is ticklish or has ever been tickled. Tickling? What’s that, never heard of it.
10. are they embarrassed about their ticklishness, and do they try to deny/hide it?
100000% yes.
11. would gentle tickling or rough tickling affect them more?
Both, but depending on the spot! Rough tickles are perfect for his feet or underarms but not great for extra sensitive spots like his belly button, where gentle tickles are enough to drive him CRAZY.
12. is there a specific spot that they enjoy being tickled, either exclusively or more than other spots? what is it?
Basically his entire midsection! His belly/ribs/sides are super ticklish and even though he complains and begs non-stop he loves being tickled there because he completely loses control and it feels amazing.
13. is there a spot that they can’t stand to be tickled, either because it’s just too sensitive, or it’s uncomfortable/painful/etc? what is it?
He kinda loves having his belly button tickled but he also can’t stand more than a few minutes of it max. because he’s just too ticklish there, he’d die.
14. would they ever purposefully bug a friend/partner/sibling into tickling them, and if so, how would they go about it?
When he’s in a restless mood he’ll sometimes go bug one of his siblings into tickling him, usually by hitting them with small objects using flawless aim until they finally lose it.
15. does teasing affect them?
YES he cannot handle any teasing, he immediately turns bright red and loses any ability to speak or move or think. If hearing the word “tickle” is embarrassing, teasing turns that embarrassment up to 5000.
send me a character and i’ll share my tickle headcanons

while i’m thinking about umbrella kids and language learning, i would bet that reginald picked out a group of a few languages that he thought were Most Useful TM based on his particular. uh. WORLDVIEW (cough racism classism cough cough) and didn’t give the kids any say in which language they got. they were nine when they started their second language in their pods.
i put the kids into pods because i think even though reginald’s an asshole who doesn’t understand the value of human interaction he’d know that learning a language in a vacuum is. not ideal. you need someone to bounce off of
so vanya and allison started on russian
luther and klaus started on french (which klaus uses exclusively to try to get people into bed these days because americans think french is sexy)
and then the other three started on japanese. diego was always angry because he had decided he wanted to learn spanish, ben wasn’t mad because whatever but then when he got older he was like... wait... did dad put me on the WRONG east asian language because he’s racist (ben is korean-american like his actor because of course, and he doesn’t even know about the specific colonialism aspects here because he died too early to do the reading himself and KLAUS certainly isn’t doing any research on the historical relationship between japan and korea) and five hasn’t been using that knowledge to watch a ton of anime as a fifty something year old man who was finally allowed back into the land of the living. no SIR.
all of them are good at their second language. they started on the third language when they were twelve, and their mileage varies on how well they retained this one.
vanya and allison working on russian with luther and klaus
klaus and luther working on french with the japanese gang and
the japanese gang working on japanese with vanya and allison
vanya and allison were both pretty into learning languages so they helped luther get very good because he was Studious TM but klaus was incredibly done with the whole affair by that point so his russian is very spotty at this point. he mainly talked allison into gossiping while vanya and luther were working (allison didn’t really mind because it was just klaus’s loss- not hers)
when the french gang is teaching the japanese gang french, it’s luther trying VERY hard to teach (which he’s not very good at) and klaus cracking jokes which diego and ben are very entertained by. it mostly descends into klaus, ben, and diego goofing. and then five goofing off too because he’s a very fast learner. and luther being frustrated because we’re supposed to be WORKING
five knows a LOT of japanese but he’s not a very good teacher. ben is the best at the teaching aspect and since vanya and allison are both pretty interested they’re able to work things out with five’s depth of knowledge and ben’s patience. diego is doing “research” on samurai that he SWEARS is going to be helpful to their learning. it isn’t, but it makes him happy so no one complains. he wasn’t really contributing anyways.
five disappears right before they form the FOURTH language groups and reginald doesn’t make any changes based on five not being there. or even comment on it. fourth language groups are the same but backwards.
luther tries very hard to teach the girls french but it’s. uh. since he and allison are doing the incest romance thing and french has CONNOTATIONS it keeps getting.. steamy. klaus is sitting in the corner cracking jokes. vanya has also curled up there and is like. bro. is this really? and he’s like yeah. and they’re like OH MY GOD
the japanese gang is hanging on by a thread. luther is trying very hard to learn while klaus is trying hard to do Anything But TM. diego was never into this so he’s very much just playing with his knives and thinking about how five’s supposed to be here and ben is trying his best but getting distracted by klaus and also thinking about how FIVE IS SUPPOSED TO BE HERE. this is mainly luther looking at kanji in a book and pretending to know what any of it means. he nods sagely while internally going what the FUCK
allison and vanya are both messed up when they work with the japanese group because diego is not interested in learning russian, ben is trying his hardest but just isn’t on his game, and really. no one is. because five is supposed to be there and he isn’t. they don’t actively goof off, but things are not going well for learning russian because everything is wrong.
SO! how well the kids learned the languages!
1. luther: approaching fluent in french, passable in russian, and then has more japanese than the average american. his level of japanese is like.. base level weeb who has just decided to learn and hasn’t done much of the legwork yet
2. diego has pretty strong japanese, bits and pieces of french, and can like. identify russian letters. maybe get through a few levels on duolingo. it’s not a lot
3. allison IS fluent in russian, don’t even test her. her japanese is strong and her french is too. she kept working on all of them after leaving the academy and then picked up a few more. this girl is a polyglot
4. klaus has enough french to flirt and basically none of the other two. he can identify the sound of the other two and knows what it looks like on a page. maybe could ask where the bathroom is in the other two
5. VERY good japanese, solid french and no russian, solely because he never had the chance to learn
6. VERY good japanese and then he’s got pretty good french and the amount of russian an american would have if they took two years in school and didn’t use it much
7. VERY good russian and solid in the other two. she didn’t pick up any other languages after leaving the academy, but she really kept up her other languages. trying to make her way as a violinist she’s done a few poorly paying tours in europe so her russian and french served her very well there.

proof that diego hargreeves isn’t the hardened vigilante he thinks he is:
in his establishing character moment, he saves a mixed-race family who likely reminds him of his own, and despite the fact that he’s just single-handedly slaughtered a bunch of robbers, he takes the time to tell them “your family is safe now” in such a kind voice that they relax immediately
was so shy about dancing where people could see him that he took the time to close the living room doors before busting into the sickest dance moves you wouldn’t expect from somebody like him
when five’s portal appears, he shoves vanya behind him despite having told her earlier that she has no right coming back to the house after publishing Extra Ordinary
repeatedly guided their mother about during the funeral because grace was noticeably loopier than usual
after his fight with luther, he immediately goes to her, ushers her inside with a kind hand on her back, and opens the door for her like a perfect gentleman
despite the fact that he'd just told klaus he wouldn’t drive him anywhere, diego still waited for him, and was even smiling when klaus finally arrived and started talking about diarrhetic hippos
has outright said that his job is “saving lives, baby”
was nice to agnes, even when he could’ve just forced information out of her
repeatedly teased patch about liking his leather suit and domino mask
was friendly enough with the other policemen that even though he’d almost ruined an investigation by being too nosy for his own good, they still greet him brightly and are actually on a first-name basis with him
told patch that he does give a shit, not just about fighting crime, but also about her
went to her porch specifically after grace’s death, either because he wanted to guard her or because it was the only place he felt safe in that moment
actually jumped on hazel’s back to beat the shit out of him even better because he was choking allison
is the biggest momma’s boy on the planet oh my gosh i cannot stress this point enough and was so protective of her because she was the only one who showed him love and affection growing up
has a habit of getting mad when he’s worried about people (e.g. when vanya gets hurt, or seeing patch’s dead body)
was the only one--i repeat, the only one out of five other people--to notice that klaus was acting out of character and took the time to listen to his woes
cue a bonding moment because the both of them have lost so much in the span of a few days (“well, you’re luckier than most. when you lose someone, at least you can ... see them whenever you want”)
was polite to the soldiers at the veterans' bar because despite the fact that they were being rude, they were still heroes at one point in time and diego clearly respects that
didn’t say a single bad thing about the fact that his brother liked men; only agreeing that he was a pretty special person indeed to love someone like klaus
helped his brother get sober when no one else would
immediately offered to give allison blood, even though we all know just how scared he is of needles
was furious that luther locked vanya up, and it took luther shoving him away a few times from the handle before he gave up
watched his baby sister perform with so much wonder on his face, and was genuinely sorry that there was no other way to stop her
decides to honor patch’s memory by not killing cha-cha
lands in the past and what’s the first thing he does? save an innocent woman from getting mugged ugh idk where reggie ever got the idea that this boy was weak, the heroics run so strongly through his veins
was nothing but kind and understanding with lila because she's a survivor like him, and despite the fact that he’s got something of a hair trigger temper, he takes the time to explain simple things to her (”like yogurt”) and gives her a promise he takes careful measures to keep
was genuinely enjoying himself while dancing with lila, even though she was leading, and honestly that’s the most i’ve seen him smile throughout the series but i’m not even complaining
makes star wars references
WAS THE ONLY SIBLING WHO TOOK THE TIME TO GIVE ELLIOTT’S BODY A DECENT GRAVE BECAUSE HE WAS “ONE OF US”
is the pioneering member of Team Zero™️
was so genuinely happy to hear that ben was possessing klaus that his whole face lit up, and kept clutching him close because finally, after almost two decades of blaming himself for his brother’s death, it’s pretty clear that ben doesn’t have any grudges against him and doesn’t hold any of them accountable for letting him die on the mission
shares exactly one (1) braincell with Luther all throughout S2
forgave his sister as soon as she apologized because that was really all he needed
“you will be dead by midnight ... wrong number, have a lovely day”
“i almost had her, why the hell did you stop me?” “because ... i love her”
didn’t just use herb, and actually took the time to create a friendship + the coolest secret handshake ever with him, which is such a refreshing change from the stereotype in most media where the protagonists simply use side characters to further their goals, then discard them later on
was genuinely touched that klaus thought he looked like antonio banderas
was literally digging his knives into the FBI department floor, just to get to his baby sister and calm her down. CALM HER DOWN, not knock her out or kill her like before, because even though he doesn’t admit it outright, he’s grown fond of her, and it shows in the way he lets her lean against him on the porch
upon getting out from under a tractor that had been pinning his leg in place, what’s the first thing he does? “ALRIGHT TEAM ZERO” *awkward fist bump-high five with luther* i mean come on the levels of dork are just too much
is, in general, such a good and loving person, and that in itself is already a big thing because if you think about it, hargreeves’ training from hell would’ve turned anybody else into somebody as cruel and sadistic as him, but diego still managed to become the exact opposite of that because sure, he can be a little too cynical and snarky sometimes, but his heart has always been in the right place, and that's why we all love him

- synopsis: It was finally time to meet the bringer of the apocalypse– a petite girl wrapped up in a blanket drinking tea. Totally chill. Nothing unusual about the situation at all. At least Klaus was consistent with his irritating commentary.

_______________________________________
Okay. So you were going to face the person who allegedly caused the apocalypse. No big deal. This was just a normal day, and she was just a girl. Albeit one who had undergone pretty severe trauma in her life, but hey. Nothing you couldn’t handle with a pleasant smile and a cup of tea, right?
Maybe the tea was a bad idea. But you felt like you needed a peace offering. Something to break the ice before asking someone who was relatively a complete stranger, “I think I can contain your powers, so why don’t we try? Also, why don’t you move into my apartment for the time being? I promise the occasional cockroach that comes out the drain won’t do any harm. It would be nice if he paid rent, but I can’t complain.”
Yeah. Just a normal day.
An abrupt tap on your shoulder and Klaus’s breath tickling the side of your neck forced your eyes away from your previous stare down with the white bedroom door, and any and all courage you’d built up to walk in quickly dissipated.
“Hey, you think if this whole—” his voice caught on a sharp intake of breath as he tried to find his words, his hands rolling, “trying to convince my sister to not start the second apocalypse by moving in with you thing doesn’t work out, I can still crash there? You can’t begin to imagine just how stifling it is here. I don’t even think Five has changed out of his little uniform in a week, let alone had a shower. You smell so much better. Like vanilla with a bit of stale coffee and deep-seated cynicism.”
Turning your face fully towards his, your noses almost touching by how close he had leaned in, you kept your expression passive. And then you tipped your hand to let half of the scalding tea fall over the lip of the cup and on his bare feet.
As Klaus jumped back, hopping between his feet and hollering a string of “ow, ow, ow,” you took a small step back and replied with a drab and mocking, “that has to hurt.”
Klaus gave a curt laugh that was almost lost, given his teeth were clenched in pain. “You know, I don’t know if I like your violent style of foreplay.”
“You’re making it very clear why Vanya destroyed the world in the first place, Klaus,” you responded, voice raised. “You haven’t even experienced just how sadistic I can be. I can turn around right now and just let her cause the second apocalypse again.”
“How original of you, threatening to leave. What is it, the tenth time already? Maybe if we’re all lucky, you can get a couple more in before dinner!”
“You know what’s original? Your desperate need for attention because you never got any from daddy as a kid. I’ve never seen that before-“
The door opened in front of you, and someone’s soft cough had you and Klaus both turning in their direction.
Allison Hargreeves.
“Are you guys done?” She questioned, a tight impatient look crossed on her features. At a loss for words, partly embarrassed now that you’d raised your voice, you tried to find anywhere to look but her eyes. Your gaze ultimately got caught on her neck, and the healed, puffy scar raised on her skin. Right. They’d mentioned Vanya had injured Allison. Pretty horribly at that. You remembered what you were nervous about in the first place.
“Allison, this is Y/N, though they will reply to trouble or travel-sized Satan just as well,” Klaus offered, slipping past his sister, who stood fully in the frame of the doorway.
Reaching behind to scratch your neck, you forced a timid smile on your face and gave a small wave with your free hand. “Hey. Nice, uh… place you got here.” Totally casual. “Very clean.” Not awkward at all.
Allison snorted. “Uh-huh. Nice to meet you. Let’s see if this was all worth it, shall we?”
Straight to the point. You could respect that. Nodding, you kept the nervous smile on your face as you walked past her after she sidestepped away from the door. You didn’t really know what you were expecting. Part of you thought the room was going to be some weird pit of despair. Dark and broody, like it was supposed to set the scene for some comic book character about to delve into their villain origin story.
But nope. It was just a standard bedroom, very well lit, white linen, clean carpet. The only thing that really stood out was the sunny yellow blanket wrapped tightly around a petite frame huddled on the single bed, a sky blue polka dot teacup clutched in both of her hands.
Well, now you didn’t feel so bad that you’d poured out basically all the tea you were going to give Vanya on Klaus.
“I’m guessing you’re Vanya?”
No shit, she was Vanya. You literally knew what she looked like.
You shuffled your feet awkwardly as the girl’s eyes flickered up to you. You still had the teacup in your hand.
“I brought you this, but I… spilled a little,” you commented off-handily, moving over to set it on a small side table.
Klaus made a notably shocked look. “Is that what you call a little?”
Vanya nodded her head once, her tone quietly gruff as she added, “we could hear you through the door.”
Allison offered a very helpful, “I’m sure the whole apartment floor heard them.”
Klaus, unable to contain himself from continuing this rally of comments, added, “well, it’s not the only time my screams have woken up someone next door. Certainly won’t be the last, God hoping the world doesn’t explode again.”
All three of you groaned. Good to know you weren’t the only one exhausted.
“It’s nice to meet you, Vanya. Did they explain to you why I’m here?” You asked, moving closer to the girl in question.
Vanya’s eyes glanced quickly over to Allison, who nodded her head in encouragement. She then turned to look at you once more and gave a slight jerk of her head in affirmation. Despite what had happened between Vanya and Allison, you could see the trust between the sisters. You might have gotten the story of what happened three months prior, but obviously they had worked out some stuff. At least a little bit. “Yeah. Yeah, Five uhm, gave me the gist of it,” Vanya replied, her voice still quiet with an edge of hesitance.
“It really works,” Klaus stated, looking at you with a joyful look. “Not seeing Ben’s ugly mug for once…” he pressed his hands to his heart and contentedly sighed, “it was the biggest blessing one could have given me.” His serene mood quickly dissipated as he looked to an empty corner and bit out a tight, “zip it, ghoul boy.”
“I don’t know,” Vanya carried on, as Klaus and presumably Ben continued to have an argument in the back. “Our powers are different. I don’t know if I want to take the risk of using it again in case it doesn’t work.”
You sighed, and Allison brought her hand up to nervously to chew on a nail. Moving to sit on the edge of the bed, you tried your best to settle the situation. Yeah, the money you would get for this would be nice, but you could tell this all went beyond that. It was important. You knew they wouldn’t have just let you into their inner circle if it wasn’t.
“I get it. What happened was awful, but you aren’t in that place anymore, right? Panic makes you do stupid shit. You aren’t you when you’re in such a crisis. That doesn’t mean you don’t take accountability for those actions, but the you sitting here isn’t actively trying to blow up the moon and cause the end of the world.” Peering over to Klaus, who stood grumpily off to the side, you asked, “it was the moon, right?”
His attention quickly fixed on you as he replied back, “oh yeah,” making a sudden explosion movement with his hands and horrible sound effects to go with it.
Allison’s blunt, “Klaus,” was enough to quickly shut him up.
“But I could panic again,” Vanya pleaded, her hazel eyes cutting in their pain. As stable and as comfortable as she appeared now, you could recognize that constant fear that must have lived in her. You knew too much about regret. You could see that in her eyes.
“And that’s where I come in. I can stop that. But we have to try first to see if it can work.” Reaching out a hesitant hand, you placed it on her knee still covered with the blanket and offered, “this power is inside you whether you like it or not. I don’t have perfect control over mine. I wish there were things I had done differently.” People you could have saved. People who you accidentally hurt. “You tried suppressing it, but that only made it explosive once it was actually let out. We can try to make it so you can live with it. Even if you don’t use it, at least you can control it.”
Vanya bit her lip and drooped her head, her hair falling in curtains around her face. You were curious about what her thoughts were. The furrow between her brows tensed and untensed in a way you knew her answer to the proposition was continually changing.
“Vanya, I’ve gone the self-destructive route to try and drown the voices out,” Klaus chirped up in the silence, his compassionate tone odd to your ears. From the corner, he strolled past you and rested a hand on his sister’s shoulder. “But I’ve never experienced quiet so fully until they put their field around me.” Soft eyes met yours as he added, “I never thought it was possible. It’s all I ever wanted.”
Holding his look for a moment, you weren’t quite sure what to say. You’d never really been… praised for your gift. Whenever you tried to use it to help someone else, you’d get called a freak or something worse. Any other time, it accidentally (well, purposefully sometimes) harmed someone. You could tell Klaus was sincere. Listening to the voices of the dead so much must be harrowing. You never really gave much thought about spirits and their presence, but for all you know, there could be multiple in the room with him at any moment. Always in pain. Always sharing that with him.
All you could manage to offer in response was a gentle smile before you tipped your head back to look at Vanya. “You don’t know me. I can’t ask you to trust me to do this. But why don’t you stay with me for a bit anyway? Klaus will be there, and you can come and go as you want, the others too. I’ll show you a couple of things I can do with the force field, and when you’re ready to test it out, we will. This is in your hands, Vanya. You’re in control.”
That’s all people like us could ever want. Control. Certainty—
Understanding.
“I already called sharing the bed with Trouble, just so you know,” Klaus said.
Although, it seemed your understanding clearly had its limits.
“If you did that, I would have to burn my bed so I didn’t get fleas. How about I get you a nice doggy bed instead?”
That got a grin out of Vanya, and when Allison added, “I think a flea repellent collar would be a wise investment as well,” her smile grew a little more comfortable.
“very funny, really, ” Klaus muttered.
“Okay. I’ll come with you,” Vanya finally conceded, reaching over to set her cup on the nightstand. “I’m— I don’t think I’m ready to try it out yet, but I guess if I do lose control again, having you there will be a good safety net?”
“We’ll all be your safety net this time.” Allison’s tone was earnest, remorse and care wrapped up on one. “I promise.” She sat on the bed and Vanya gently rested her head on her shoulder.
Whatever had gone on with this family, whatever tragedy had occurred in the past or with the current ordeal, seemed to be mending. You were kind of in awe staring at the scene. You had never known this kind of support since your father, and even then, you were so young that your memories of those feelings of comfort had faded. You lived alone. Didn’t really have any lasting friendships. You had the old couple across the hall who you played cards with at least once a week— though you were pretty sure they cheated every single time— but that wasn’t even close to what the Hargreeves had.
Family.
Standing back up, you heaved in a heavy breath. “I’ll leave you to pack,” you offered with your best shot at a cheery smile despite the sudden growing muck (jealousy, sadness, regret) festering through your veins. “Would you mind if I use the bathroom?”
Allison started to talk, offering you directions before Klaus interjected, “I’ll show you where it is.”
You were going to argue that you were perfectly capable of managing directions in the single apartment, but he placed his hand on your back and was quickly ushering you out of the door and down the rest of the hall.
“You really okay with doing this?” His questioned jarred you, eyes widening as you stepped away from his touch.
“Klaus, are you kidding?” You shot back, your exhaustion entrapping your exasperation in one low, breathy air. “I didn’t see you caring about that when I had originally said no multiple times.”
“You didn’t have that,” he stalled, struggling to come up with words as he haphazardly waved his hands in front of your face, “that look before. You looked sad when Vanya said she would come.”
Ah. You thought you’d shielded your face away from what you had felt. Strange that he would pick up on it. “It’s fine, Klaus. I want to help.”
Klaus didn’t look so sure, but he was also resigned enough to accept that answer. It was the truth anyway. It was a brief second of allowing yourself to feel bad. We all had those. A desire for something else someone has, for love, for care. But maybe this situation would help. Helping someone else, someone relatively similar to you, given the fucked up freak birth that messed up all their lives, would give you a sense of purpose.
“Can I ask you something, though?” You said, biting the inside of your cheek in a sort of nervous gesture.
“Yeah, sure,” Klaus prompted, curiosity lowing his eyebrows as he slightly tilted his head.
“Did you mean what you said in there? Did my blocking your power really help you that much?” You just needed to know. He looked so earnest, almost… desperate to experience it again. You felt seized by a sudden warmth. You just wanted to experience that again, whatever that was. To feel like you had done right.
“Trouble, you have no idea how much that helped. I meant what I said,” his tone turned almost affectionate, his eyes almost pleading with you to believe, “It really is all I ever wanted.”
And suddenly, the warmth that you hoped would have a growing familiarity in your body came back. However, there was something else there, nagging at the back of your consciousness, that you couldn’t quite grasp. It almost felt like concern or empathy, but there was something more. Despite Klaus’s kind words, there was an undercurrent of sadness to them. The man in front of you, who sometimes seemed so much younger and fragile than what he was, had been through hurt. You could recognize it. You had the moment you had met him and all the Hargreeves. But you were finally beginning to fully comprehend what his particular sadness was.
“It’s horrible to have been forced with a burden that could probably do so much good, but we just haven’t been able to see it.” You murmured, speaking your thoughts out loud without really meaning to. “All of you guys were forced to do good with your powers. Be the good guys, get the bad ones. That in itself was another burden just on top of it. You were kids. You never got to experience normal lives and have your powers adjusted to fit normalcy. I guess I’m lucky in that regard.”
You didn’t really know what you were saying. Just looking at Klaus’s face and the emotions you couldn’t read had you spewing words so freely that surely he must have thought you to be the erratic one now and not him.
“Sorry,” you laughed lightly, trying to break the tension. “I guess I’m just trying to say, if my power can do good by helping you guys out, then I’m happy. Whenever things get too noisy, just let me know and I’ll try and drown it out for you. Maybe just… living for a while, not stressing about your next plans, will help too.” You could try to provide some sort of normalcy in your shitty little apartment, with shitty cable, and an even shittier view.
“I’ll do that,” Klaus’s voice was so quiet you barely caught what he had said. “Thank you.”
Averting your gaze to the floor, you rubbed the tip of your nose with the back of your hand and stood in silence for a few moments.
“So uhm. Where’s that bathroom?”
“Oh, shit! Ah, yeah, just down the hall and to the right off the kitchen,” Klaus laughed, tension easing.
“What, not going to lead to it?” You teased.
“No, I think you can manage pretty well,” he smirked, before walking off into one of the adjacent rooms, probably to go pack.
What a shame. You’d probably have to burn all his clothes before they touched your carpets, now that you thought about it. You know, because of the fleas and all that.

Family Outings (Five Hargreeves x Fem! Reader)
A/N: Another five fiction, lol. In this Five can be 13 years old, hahaha. Hope you like.
Btw, we still have places in case you want to order some blurb or one shot, from our prompt list or if you have another idea.  300 Followers!
Words: 3,998
Tumblr media
"Diego!" Five yells from his room.
Diego shrinks into one of the kitchen chairs.
"Now what did you do?" Allison asks in front of him, with a mug in hand.
“I left some knives in his room,” He answers with a grimace.
“Bad idea, bro. Our dear Five has been very sensitive these days,” adds Klaus.
"I don't think it's that bad–“
A blue flash appears in the kitchen, causing Diego to jump back. Five raises one of his knives and glares at him.
"You think it's fun to stab my notes and maps?" He asks through his teeth.
Diego grimaces.
"I'm sorry, I forgot. I won’t leave them there again,” Five pushes his hand away.
“The problem is not that you forgot. Stop practicing in my room!" He yells, stabs the wooden table and then disappears. Klaus whistles.
"What was that all about?" Ben asks.
"Diego almost died... again,” Allison takes a sip of her mug calmly.
"That boy’s crazy! I've always practiced in all the rooms, I don't understand what the problem is now," says Diego taking his knife.
"Maybe Five is on his period," says Klaus.
"No, he's yelled at us more than usual lately and only leaves his room to eat," Ben adds thoughtfully.
“Perhaps he’s lost his mind officially…”
They were all thinking that was the most logical reason.
***
The next day all the siblings finish eating and help collect everything. When Five finishes his part, he decides to make himself a cup of coffee as usual, but taking a sip his face twists.
"Agh! Who do I have to kill to get a decent cup of coffee?" He complains looking at his siblings.
Allison, Diego, Luther, Ben, Klaus and Vanya look at each other without knowing what to do.
"You bought another kind of coffee yourself," Vanya says. Five shakes his head.
“No, someone must have changed it. It tastes awful,” He says, throwing away the coffee and washing the cup almost furiously.
The siblings share another worried look, they know it can get worse if they do something. Luther raises his hand and winks at them, the others tried to stop him, but it was too late
"I'll take care of it," he says, approaching his brother. “Five," He touches the boy's shoulder and he turns, raising an eyebrow. "Don't you think it's time for you to learn to control your anger?"
He says it with a reassuring smile, which doesn't last long as Five's features tightened.
"Control my anger?" He says, laughing cynically. "Oh brother this is nothing. Do you want to know what I can do when I'm really angry?"
Luther shakes his head repeatedly and babbles nervously.
“Five," says Vanya and her brother looks at her, finally noticing the fear in the others. He sighs.
"I'll go for a better coffee," he says and then disappears.
"I think Luther wet his pants," Diego says holding back a laugh as Allison slaps his shoulder.
***
Three weeks later.
"Guys!" Diego yells running to Allison's room, the largest of all, and calls his siblings to meet there.
"What's going on?" Ben asks.
“Is it important enough to interrupt my bath?" says Klaus dressed with a towel.
"You're okay?" says Vanya.
When everyone is together -except for Five- Diego thinks well what he has to say.
“You won’t believe what just happened.”
"Say it," Allison complains.
"I was practicing with my knives, I’m using a new technique that I have perfected–"
"Diego!" The others say at the same time.
"Yes, okay– I was practicing and I didn't realize that Five had entered, so by accident I cut his ear a bit. It was just a scratch! I think I panicked a little when it all happened.”
"And now he's looking for you to kill you?" says Ben crossing his arms.
“No, that's what I have to tell you. I apologized but he just... smiled. He said there was no problem, it was just an accident, and continued on his way.”
"Didn't he yell at you?"
"Threats? Revenge?"
"No, it's not- Do you think he's planning revenge?" He says, suddenly more nervous.
"Wait," says Allison. "You're telling us that Five,” points outside her room. "That little maniac we have for a brother, didn't do anything to you?” Diego nods.
"This is very strange," says Vanya.
"Do you think he's drugged?" Luther asks.
"No sir," says Klaus. "I would know.”
When everyone is silent, they hear the faint sound of a record: Dancing in the moonlight.
The Hargreeves brothers stay still in their places.
"Does the music come from..?” Diego says.
"Five's Room," Ben finishes for him.
"Maybe he is high," adds Klaus.
***
The next day Klaus grabs his walkman, puts on his headphones, and starts dancing around his room until he goes out into the hall.
Everything is fine, the music takes him to unimaginable places -just like his drugs- and from time to time he looks in the rooms of his siblings; Ben is reading, Vanya’s practicing on her Violin. Klaus smiles at them, but everything changes when he passes by Five's room, where he stops at the door frame.
For a moment he thinks he sees Five walking from one place to another fixing his outfit. He laughs at his own thoughts, but he can't help but hide to spy on him better and what he finds surprises him even more.
Five is dressed in dark jeans, a navy blue T-shirt, sneakers, and a leather jacket. Klaus can't believe what he sees, his brother in front of a mirror, combing his hair and adjusting his jacket.
Never in his life had he seen Five worry about his appearance and the worst thing is that he wears normal clothes! And not the uniform of the academy that he has become used to.
Klaus is gaping, but he knows he can't be there any longer, so he runs off to Allison's room and tells his sister everything he just witnessed.
"You've got to be kidding me," Allison says without taking her eyes off her magazine.
“I swear I'm not lying. I know I'm a genius at lying, but not this time."
His sister sighs and looks up.
"Okay, suppose that's true. Why do you think he’s doing it?"
“I don't know, that's why I came to you, little sister. I have no idea what is going on. Let's see it with your own eyes.”
She rolls her eyes and they both leave the room just as Five leaves his. Allison also can't believe what Klaus said was true.
"Five?" She asks.
“Hey," answers the boy with a half smile, causing chills in his two siblings.
"Are you going somewhere?" Ben and Diego peeked out their doors to find out what’s going on.
"I'll go out,” replies Five with a shrug and walking towards the stairs to avoid further questions.
“Five's not wearing the uniform..." says Diego, meeting with the others. "Did you also see him or am I going crazy?"
"This is so strange," adds Ben.
"Where do you think he went?"
"I don't know, but we have to follow him," Allison answers. "He didn’t use his power.”
The four of them were silent for a few seconds, until they ran to their rooms and grabbed their coats. Allison told Luther and Vanya on the way out. Diego hurried forward to look for Five and found him walking into a flower shop.
"What's happening to him!?" Klaus exclaims.
Five leaves the premises with a red rose in hand and a big smile before continuing on his way. Cautiously, the other Hargreeves followed him until he reached the cinema. The boy waited at the entrance next to the small cubicle where tickets are bought.
"He seems nervous," says Luther.
“What're you planning?" Diego asks in a whisper.
Klaus, Allison, Vanya, and Ben roll their eyes at their brother's question.
"Look!" Vanya points out the moment a girl calls out for Five.
He smiles at her and scratches the back of his neck nervously. The girl hugs him and he corresponds, then gives her the flower. They chat for a bit and then head off to buy their tickets.
"No way…”
"What?"
"I can’t believe it!”
“Shit."
"Five is–“
"On a date!"
***
Three weeks before.
"I'll go for a better coffee,” he says and then disappears.
While his siblings plan to avoid Five's anger. He appears outside the Griddy’s shop, where he and his siblings used to go often when they were younger.
He fixes his uniform, walks into the store and sits at the bar, ignoring the people. After a few minutes Agnes, the waitress takes his order, just black coffee.
While waiting, Five decides to look around: to his right were two gentlemen, talking and laughing. To the left, in the background, there’s a girl, perhaps the same age, sitting with a cup at her side and a notebook in front of her, she’s drawing, deeply concentrated. And further on are a group of four teenagers laughing and joking, every now and then one of them turns towards the girl.
His thoughts are interrupted by the cup of coffee Agnes brings him, his focus now on caffeine. That’s why he doesn’t hear the laughter increases.
Five is oblivious to what happens behind his back: A boy rips a napkin into small pieces, makes them into balls and begins to throw them towards the girl to attract attention.
Little by little the girl loses her patience with the teenagers, who have been visiting the store for three days only to annoy her while she tries to focus on her drawings.
A napkin ball falls on her table, another falls into her notebook, but when one touches her face and the laughter of the boys increases, she decides that’s enough.
Sighing, she doesn't want to leave the cafeteria, she's only been there for a few minutes and she really wants a moment alone, as she always manages to do. She looks up and looks around her and sees the two men who are about to leave, so she looks at the bar. A boy in uniform she’s never seen before is there.
It seems that they’re the same age, so she takes her cup, her notebook, pencil case, bag and walks towards the bar, on the boy's right side. She clears her throat and he looks at her sideways.
"Excuse me, does it bother you if I sit next to you?" says politely, pointing to the bench.
Five just shrugs. Y/N frowns at his reaction, she was expecting something more, but doesn't want to push, so she puts her things on the counter and reopens her notebook.
"Hi Y/N, can I get you more chocolate?" Agnes asks. And the girl nods.
Hearing the girl's request, Five can't help but roll his eyes thinking how childish it is to drink chocolate. After a few minutes, Agnes returns with the cup and offers it to the girl, who thanks with a smile.
"Now why did you change places, Y/N?" Agnes asks while cleaning the counter. "You always sit on the back."
She makes a face and points behind her.
"Oh, those children. They have come three days in a row, haven't they?"
"Yes, unfortunately.”
Five raises an eyebrow at the conversation. Agnes leaves to continue cleaning the place.
"Don't your parents say anything to you for drinking coffee?" Y/N asks him.
“No," He says curtly and she makes a face.
"Personally, I prefer chocolate," She adds with a smile.
"Good for you.”
Her smile falls at the boy's responses.
"Sorry, I just wanted to make conversation…”
The girl takes a sip from her cup, takes out the pencil she was using earlier, and goes back to her drawings.
Five is a bit surprised when the girl next to him no longer tries to get his attention, usually people nags until he loses it, especially about his uniform, or even recognize him from the academy. He turns a little and sees the delicate strokes the girl makes, along with some loose pages that almost fell off the notebook. Without thinking, Five asks.
"Did you do all that?"
She raises her head and watches the boy, who points to the paper.
“Oh yeah –uh. I did it,” She takes out one of the sheets and shows him a pencil drawing of a swallow.
Five takes the sheet.
"You're good," He says simply and returns the drawing.
"Thank you,” she answers with a smile. “I'm Y/N.”
"Five," he replies, nodding, she looks at him confused.
"What?"
"My name is Five."
“Oh…”
“Yeah."
Y/N shrugs, looks down, and notices his blazer.
"What school do you go to? I think I have seen that emblem before, but I don't remember…”
Five rolls his eyes, but knows it's his fault, he hinted to continue the conversation.
"A private one, it's not very well known,” He says, turning to the counter and taking his cup.
Y/N frowns trying to remember, but is unable to do so, as her thoughts are cut off by another ball of paper crashing against her nose.
"Ugh, you have to be kidding me," She complains, drawing the attention of Five.
"You know? If you say something to them, maybe they’ll stop bothering you.”
She snorts. “I already did, the first day they arrived. They invited me to be with them and when I said no, they did their best to annoy me, it has been like this for days. Every time I say something it's worse,” She rolls her eyes. “I guess they can't understand much when they have a brain the size of a walnut…”
The comment makes Five smile, remembering that he once said it to his brothers.
"Trust me, I know what you're talking about," he says.
"You do?" she asks.
"My brothers are not the smartest in the academy.”
She laughs.
“It must be fun going with your siblings to the same school. I’m an only child,” She adds.
"Sometimes it is…”
She opens her mouth to continue the conversation, but one of the annoying guys arrives at her spot, between Five and Y/N.
"Hey kid," He says, tapping Five's arm. "Why don't you just leave and go back to your stupid school?"
His friends laugh and Five turns completely still on the bench, looks at the boy with a tight smile.
"And leave Y/N in the hands of four idiots who don't know what a 'no' is?" He says sarcastically.
Y/N looks surprised, while the other boy clenches his hands into fists.
"Surely she’s bored with you, friend. I'm doing you a favor.”
“How considerate of you. What’s your next altruistic action of the day?"
That makes the girl laugh and Five raises an eyebrow, annoying the blond boy further.
"Do you want to fix this problem outside, kid?"
"I don't see why,” answers Five. "And you?" He asks Y/N and she denies. "You see?"
“You and me outside. Now.” The boy mutters.
“No, thanks.”
The friends get up. That puts the girl on alert, touching Five's shoulder and he notices it too.
"Just leave us alone," She says.
"Shut it, princess,” answers the blond.
Before anyone could do anything else, the blond grabs Five by the collar of his shirt and forces him out of the store. Being taller and stronger than Five, it was quite easy to pull.
Y/N quickly packs up her things and pays for her chocolate and Five's coffee. When the blond lets go of Five, he walks away laughing a bit.
"What's so funny, you idiot?"
"Oh nothing. Only- it's funny to think that you guys want to fight me.”
"Oh, let's break you up," says another of the guys.
Five laughs again and the four boys approach him, but he uses his teleportation power to dodge them. In less than five minutes, the boys are on the floor complaining. Five sees the end of the ‘fight’ and fixes his tie.
"I can't believe it," Y/N says, surprised by what she just witnessed.
The black-haired boy turns to see her and shifts somewhat uncomfortably instead.
"You're a freak!" Yells one of the boys on the ground, then stands up  and runs through the streets with his friends closely following him.
"You're okay?" asks the girl, getting closer.
“Obviously," He raises a brow.
"That was amazing!" She exclaims surprising the boy. "You're one of the Umbrella Academy, aren't you?"
"Uh- I, Yeah,” he says, there’s no point in denying it.
“Great!"
He frowns, then rolls his eyes and walks back to the store to pay for his coffee.
"Oh, I paid," she says.
"You didn't have to do it.”
"Come on, it's the least I can do," she says, smiling. "They won't go back to the store now. Thank you.”
Five looks her straight in the eye and smiles a little.
"You're welcome.”
"I - uh, do you have something to do?" She asks with a slight blush. "We could go to the park that’s nearby.”
Y/N hopes she doesn't sound like one of those desperate or intense girls, while Five thinks about his options. Go home to put up with his siblings or go to the park… with a cute girl.
"Sure, why not?"
She smiles again and they both walk into the park while talking about whatever comes to their minds.
After being together all afternoon, Five realizes that Y/N’s a funny and smart girl, when he tries to explain something to her about his power and how it can work using unusual terms, she tries to understand, and asks the right questions. She knows how to listen and takes it seriously. While she tells him about her art and some techniques that she has learned during her classes, getting all of Five's attention.
Both are happy to have met and although Five is not used to these new feelings, his curiosity wins and he wants to know more about her. The boy can't remember the last time he felt so… happy.
Throughout the remainder of the week and those that followed, Five returns to the store and meets Y/N, always in the same place. In a short time they know about their families, favorite activities, tastes…
The girl's company makes Five's anger and frustration dissolve quickly, he no longer takes it out on his siblings.
Five finds himself looking at every detail of the girl's face who’s telling him… something. His thoughts go beyond her voice, now every time he thinks of her, positive adjectives accompany it. Every time he walks to the store he gets nervous and Five knows that this is not normal.
So after three weeks, he works up the courage to ask her out to go to the movies. Y/N accepts, avoiding acting in a shameful way.
When the day of the date arrives, both teenagers are excited, but also anxious: Five decides to dress in 'normal' clothes when remembering that Y/N once asked if he was always wearing the academy uniform. He wanted to surprise her, while she’s dressed in a flowered, loose dress along with a denim jacket. The first to arrive is Five, after a few minutes she arrives with a beaming smile. The moment he sees her, he hides the red rose that bought her behind his back while smiling back.
"Wow, you look very different without wearing the uniform!" She says upon arrival.
"Hello to you too," He says, making her laugh.
Y/N hugs him by the neck and he reciprocates the hug. When they both part, he offers her the rose.
"I brought you this," he says with a little blush.
"It's beautiful, thank you,” She answers taking the flower.
"Uh- I was thinking the new action movie, but I don't know if you want to see it..?” He says nervously.
“It’s cool.”
The two of them get tickets, buy popcorn, and enter the room, oblivious to what is happening not far from them.
Five's siblings enter the cinema, after a discussion of whether it was right to spy on the boy, in the end, the idea of Klaus won. Inside the room, the film continues without problems, while the teenagers share from time to time a look, touch hands and laughs, the rest of the academy can not believe the attitude of their brother.
After the movie ends, Five and Y/N walk out of the room holding hands.
"It wasn't that bad, but it wasn't that interesting," She says.
"I think the same.”
"Can you hold this? I have to go to the bathroom…”
He nods and takes her jacket along with the flower. When Y/N disappears, Five's smile falls.
"I know you're there, come out now.”
Several complaints are heard, but in the end the six brothers come out and approach Five.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"How did you know we were here?" Luther asks.
"I heard how you argued with Diego over the popcorn,” Ben and Klaus roll their eyes with ‘I warn you’ scowls. "I would recognize your voices anywhere," he says seriously.
"Oh, but that’s not the important thing here, little brother,” says Klaus as he walks to his side. “Who's that cute girl you have a date with?"
Five's cheeks flush, but he tenses his body at the question.
"It's none of your business.”
"Come on, Five. We don't want to ruin your date, just tell us her name,” says Allison.
"I'm sure you won't leave either way, sis,” replies Five with his usual ironic smile.
“Try us," Vanya adds with an amused smile.
He sighs. "Her name is Y/N, now get out!” The six laugh.
"Five?"
The boy tenses again when he hears her behind his back. He turns and smiles nervously at her as he hands her his things.
"Everything is alright?" She asks seeing the six kids who look at her excitedly. “Hello?" She says uncertainly.
Five closes his eyes for a few seconds cursing his family. There’s no escape, so he turns to his siblings and puts a hand on the girl's waist.
“Y/N, this is my family. They spied on us while we were watching the movie.” Now the girl looks at them surprised and a little embarrassed.
Five introduces each and she reciprocates the greeting.
"It's great that there’s someone who supports our dear brother,” says Klaus, approaching the girl and then hooking his arm with hers.
"It's not that bad,” She says looking at Five, who tries not to smile.
The six Hargreeves want to get to know the girl Five is dating, not knowing that this was their first date. So they followed the couple for the rest of the date.
Y/N gets along with the family with great ease, thinks Klaus is funny, discovers that she has things in common with Ben and Vanya, thinks that Luther’s protective of his family, Diego teaches her his power, and had a good conversation with Allison. All this under Five’s uncomfortable gaze.
The boy can’t deny that he’s happy to see the girl who likes to get along with his family, but he’s also frustrated at the interruption of their date. Only in the evening, when she said goodbye to everyone, did he have a moment alone to accompany her home.
"I like your family,” She says.
"I'm sorry they interrupted our date," He scratches the back of his neck.
"Next one will be just the two of us," She says, causing him to raise his eyebrows.
“Next one?"
"Yeah, why not?"
He smiles in relief.
"I can't believe my family hasn't ruined something in my life, I assure you that Diego and Luther's fights are always-"
Five is interrupted when Y/N stands on her tiptoes and kisses his lips chastely. The boy blushes just like her, but they both smile and Five leans in to kiss her again, shortly.
"See you tomorrow?" He asks when they part.
"I'll wait for you,” She answers.

Living for the Moment Ch9 A series of glimpses at Klaus’ life if he’d met Dave in his mid 20s. His life isn’t magically transformed, love can’t fix either of them when they’re both homeless and in a bad place. They’re not even really ready for a relationship yet. But maybe a supportive friendship can set them on a better path, the two of them inspiring each other to take care of themselves. It’s going to be a long and bumpy ride, and the question is, when will they actually admit to themselves that they have feelings for each other?
-
Kaus shifted, making himself comfortable in the old shopping cart. He felt lucky for finding one abandoned out here in this back alley. He wanted to close his eyes and rest a bit, but there were memories and nightmares waiting for him that he didn’t want to relive, so instead he popped another pill and lit a joint for good measure, watching the smoke curl up into the dark sky. He was just so tired. Why did everything have to be so difficult?
“What’s been up with you lately?” Ben asked, looking down at him from a fire escape he was sitting on.
“Shhh, Ben, it’s quiet time,” Klaus said, closing his eyes.
“It’s just,” Ben continued anyway. “You haven’t been going to any of the sketchier bars or clubs like you usually do.”
“Just haven’t been in the mood,” Klaus said airily. “Why, are you complaining?”
“Of course not, it means you’ve been bored enough to take all my suggestions for things to do.  You even went to that movie I've been wanting to see.”
“What can I say? I was craving popcorn and it’s so easy to steal there,” Klaus said, hoping he’d give up soon.
“If you’re trying to get sober—”
“Yeah,” Klaus laughed out loud, interrupting him. “No way that’s gonna happen.
“I’m serious, Klaus,” Ben persisted, a little overeager. “This is really good!”
“Oh my god, you’ve got to be kidding me,” Klaus groaned, throwing his head back dramatically. “Just because I haven’t been in the mood to get absolutely wrecked, doesn’t mean I’m gonna ‘change my ways,’ or whatever. Quite the opposite. In fact, I might be feeling a bender coming on now.”
Ben’s expression didn’t look convinced and that alone made Klaus want to go out and take every drug he could get his hands on because, really, Ben should know better by now than to hold out on that kind of hope. Why was he still on his case about this when he saw firsthand what being sober did to him?
“Does this have anything to do with that Dave guy you got beat up a few days ago?” Ben suddenly asked.
“No,” Klaus said pointedly, probably too quickly. That was one of the things he was trying so hard not to think about. He still didn’t understand why Dave bothered after he’d seen how he lived his life. But it made it harder to want to indulge in his regular recklessness, especially since there hadn’t been any expectation for him to get clean like there was with anyone else he’d ever had that sort of conversation with. Maybe that could still happen, but Dave did drugs too, so Klaus really had no idea what to think. He just didn’t understand Dave.
“Whatever,” Ben said. “If it’s brooding hours, I’m gonna go. At least you’ve been more fun lately.”
“You take that back, I’m always fun,” Klaus joked, cracking one eye open to grin at Ben, who shook his head, but was smiling too as he disappeared.
Klaus leaned back in the grocery cart, breathing a heavy sigh as he closed his eyes again, settling in. He wasn’t sure how much time had gone by when he heard a group passing down the street. He must have been higher than he realized, though, because he thought he heard Dave’s voice among them.
“You guys go on ahead, I’ll catch up.”
He hadn’t realized he’d had the guy on his mind so much. He took a long drag of the joint as he heard footsteps approaching, trying to just enjoy the high before he was interrupted, feeling the cool night air on his face. He wondered what it was going to be this time. A cop? A mugging or a hate crime? Did he get a prize if he guessed right?
“Well, you look comfy.”
Klaus opened his eyes and had to do a double take when he saw that it really was Dave standing there, big smile on his face. Thankfully the split lip and black eye were beginning to heal.
“Sorry about that, didn’t mean to startle you,” Dave chuckled, leaning on the edge of the cart.
“Hey,” Klaus said, offering him his joint. “What are you up to?”
“Just seeing what parties are out and about,” Dave said, taking a drag before passing it back.
“Anything good?”
“Nah, not really. What about you?”
“Making my own party,” Klaus said, gesturing to the cart as if it were obvious.
“Sweet, any chance I can get past the bouncer?” Dave asked and Klaus couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Yeah, I might be able to swing that,” Klaus said. “But you gotta push me.”
“I thought you’d never ask,” Dave said, moving to stand on the bar on the back, using one foot to push it along.
“Oh, hell yeah, it’s definitely a party, now,” Klaus said, sitting up to get a better grip, legs still hanging over the front.
Dave brought them to a sudden stop when they passed a skate park, the two of them turning to each other.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Dave asked.
“You better be ‘cause I need to do this immediately!” Klaus exclaimed.
“Uh, you’re not talking about needing to pee, are you?”
“No!”
“Okay, good!” Dave broke into a run, speeding towards the nearest ramp.
It didn’t take long at all for Dave to lose his footing and nearly faceplant on the pavement, leaving Klaus to careen along, cheering at the top of his lungs, wind in his hair, until it reached the peak of the ramp and tipped to the side, spilling Klaus onto the ground. Thankfully, besides some scraped up elbows and knees, he wasn’t hurt. Dave sprinted over and dropped to his knees at his side, but as soon as he realized that he was more or less unhurt, he collapsed to the ground beside him, the two of them giggling.
“Next time, we should do that sober, we might last longer” Dave said. “And you should push me.”
“Sounds like taking some of the fun out of it,” Klaus said. “But fine. Then we can take turns nearly killing each other.” As if Klaus ever did anything sober.
“Sounds like the perfect evening to me,” Dave said with a heavy sigh as he caught his breath. After a moment, he rummaged around in his coat and pulled out a joint and lit it. He took a drag before bumping Klaus’ arm, offering it up. “So, how’ve you been?”
“Fantastic,” Klaus said, accepting the joint eagerly.
“That bad, huh?”
“Nah, it’s been great, really.” Klaus said, waving a hand dismissively before passing the joint back. “What about you? Your face looks better. Sorry you're not gonna get a badass scar though.”
“Aw, maybe next time,” Dave laughed.
“Really?” Klaus asked skeptically. “Do you actually want a scar? Because I can definitely help with that.”
“What? You can respond with deflective humor and I can’t?” Dave asked innocently.
“And here I was trying to be all sincere and apologize,” Klaus said, snatching the joint back, turning his eyes back to the sky above them because it was easier than looking at Dave. “I don’t even know why I went looking for you that night.” He hadn’t meant to say that out loud, but he supposed curiosity got the better of him.
“I’m glad you did. I already told you, you don’t have to apologize,” Dave said. “I’d rather get into a little fight if it means I can help out a friend.”
“Ugh, were you always this sappy?” Klaus groaned, because he wasn’t sure how he was supposed to feel about that. He wasn’t supposed to have friends. Acquaintances, sure, people he could party with, but they weren’t meant to stick around. Klaus wasn’t meant to stick around. So why was he still here?
“Yes,” Dave said with a giant shit eating grin that showed no shame whatsoever. “So, are you gonna tell me what’s been bothering you? I guess we can dance around it instead, but I have to warn you, I can be very annoying.”
“Can be?” Klaus asked, shooting him a look.
“Okay, I am very annoying,” Dave chuckled, but then, like the considerate bastard he was, he hurried to add, “Unless you genuinely don’t want to talk about it. Boundaries, and all that.”
He glanced at Dave again, at his too-blue eyes that were always so sincere and soft, and he had to look away again, turning his gaze up to the harsh streetlights and the millions of stars staring through him. He sighed. Why the fuck not? Why not just jump in and share all the crazy bullshit that was his life? It wasn’t like any of this really mattered.
And besides, Dave was bound to find out sooner or later. Honestly, he was surprised he hadn’t heard the gossip yet. Or he had but wanted to see him squirm instead. No, that wasn’t like Dave. Klaus just wanted everything to go back to normal so he could stop feeling so much all the time. Why did everything have to be so complicated?
“My sister wrote a book about the fam,” Klaus said, taking another long drag of the joint before passing it back, watching the smoke swirl above him as he exhaled into the night. “I’m impressed, really. Didn’t know she had it in her. And dear old Daddy was a bastard, someone needed to knock him down a peg or two.”
“Do you and your sister get along?” Dave asked.
Klaus couldn’t help but laugh which he supposed was answer enough.
“Then I’m guessing her portrayal of you wasn’t exactly positive,” Dave said, voice sympathetic and Klaus hated how serious all of this had gotten.
“Bingo, right on the money. But, I mean, look at me. It’s not like there’s much good to say, either. I’m just mad she told the world I was the one who dyed my brother’s mask pink. That was supposed to be our little secret.”
“That’s not true, you— wait, what do you mean ‘mask?’” Dave asked, distracted as Klaus hoped he would be.
“Well, yeah. Any good child superhero has to wear a mask.”
“Child superhero?” Dave exclaimed, choking on smoke as he sat up to stare at him.
“What, did you seriously not put it together?” Klaus asked, finally turning to grin at him, crossing his arms behind his head, getting comfortable.
“Put what together? I am so incredibly lost. What are you talking about?”
“Really?” Klaus said, holding up his hands for him to see. “Klaus Hargreeves? Ouija board inspired tattoos on my hands, umbrella tattoo on my wrist; you really have no clue who I am?”
He’d honestly thought Dave would have at least suspected by now, but it had been too nice pretending someone didn’t know his past, that he could want to get to know him for him and not the fame. Maybe Dave truly didn’t know, though, as surprising as that would be. He regretted losing that, but honestly it was worth it to see Dave’s baffled expression as he tried to piece it all together.
“I don’t—“ Dave began, but then the realization seemed to hit him. “Wait, you’re-- what was it?-- the Seance!”
“Now he gets it,” Klaus chuckled, snagging the joint from Dave’s unresisting hand. “I seriously can’t believe you didn’t put it together sooner.”
“I’m sorry, I just haven’t thought about the Umbrella Academy in years,” Dave said, looking as if his world had just changed completely. Klaus didn’t like it. “It didn’t really occur to me how fucked up it must have been until I was older.”
“Nah, it was all sunshine and roses,” Klaus said. “Just read Vanya’s book for proof.”
“Or you could fill me in,” Dave said, and Klaus had to turn to look at him, surprised. “I don’t really like hearing things second-hand, especially from someone you weren’t even that close to.”
“I am not one to share my secrets,” Klaus said. “And I said she got it pretty much right.”
He wasn’t really sure why he was trying to talk Dave into reading it. Maybe it would just make things easier. Especially because there were some things he didn’t want to share with him directly. It would be easier if Dave just stopped hanging around him so he didn’t have to see the exact moment he stopped being able to look him in the eye.
“I think I’m good,” Dave said. “We all got fucked up one way or another as kids. Some worse than others. We’re all just trying to get through life as best we can. You should be able to keep those secrets.”
“Your loss,” Klaus shrugged, not really sure why his throat was suddenly tight, even though the idea that he should have any privacy made him want to laugh. “It might explain some things.”
It shouldn’t matter what Dave did. He could be lying now and was going to look up the book the moment they went their separate ways. And even if he didn’t, if he was telling the truth, it shouldn’t mean anything to Klaus. He was already used to strangers who knew too much about him, people who only thought of him as Number Four and just wanted the bragging rights of being able to claim they knew him. He wondered how things were going to change now between the two of them.
“I’m not sure anything could explain you,” Dave laughed, and it was strange, it was almost like he was joking to deflect for Klaus.
“I’m going to pretend that was a compliment,” Klaus sniffed indignantly, barely managing to hide his grin, all too willing and relieved for the change in subject.
“I meant it as one, I swear,” Dave said. “I never know what to expect with you, but I’m having a great time trying to figure you out.”
“What’s to figure out?” Klaus asked, striking a pose. “I’m just a fabulous dumpster fire.”
“Pretend all you like, that doesn’t change how great you are.”
Klaus couldn’t help but stare at him, taken aback. He wasn’t really used to genuine compliments. Sure, he’d had people find him attractive and he knew the things he was good at and how to use them to impress or gain the upper hand, but he wasn’t used to this. He wasn’t used to anything even close to this without some sort of ulterior motive.
He had to put up with all sorts of unsavory types in order to get by, living on the streets. Then again, he’d done his own fair share of lying and stealing, so maybe he deserves to be among them. There wasn’t much he was proud of himself for, but then pride was the first thing to go if you wanted to last out here. Maybe Dave had just forgotten, he had been gone for a month, after all. That didn’t stop Klaus from wanting to be selfish, so he didn’t remind him.
“Well, that’s enough of that,” Klaus said, jumping to his feet, because as much as he liked being the center of attention, he wasn't sure how he felt about all this. Besides, being fun was what he was good at, so he might as well play to his strengths. Keep Dave from realizing the truth just a little bit longer. “Come on, then. The night is young and we’ve got havoc to cause.”
He threw his arm across Dave’s shoulders as he stood to join him, tightening his grip briefly as if threatening to put him in a headlock. Dave did the same and suddenly they were in a playful scuffle as they headed off into the night.

so. real talk re: writing because IDK if I’ve cried about it here or just on all my discords, but i am gonna complain about it here to, mmk.
TLDR: I am sad about writing. I hope rambling about it will help.
I’m so scared that I’ll lose my ability to write TUA fic T.T I was so so productive and guys: I’ve written >300k of TUA fic since mid-December.
But in the past month or so... I’ve really lost it.
Yeah, yeah, I know there’s a lot of shit going on.
But somehow I managed to write a thesis, amidst COVID, and a breakup... I managed through some of the worst depression I’ve experienced in about 10yrs. Like, guys, I was NOT GOOD. I didn’t realise how NOT GOOD I was until I was talking to a pal and realised I hadn’t washed my hair in 10 days and hadn’t showered in 5.
And now... Now I’m just... I’m just so tired...
And the S2 negativity claws at me. I GET IT. I understand why people are upset. Now I’ve had some time away from it.... Yeah, I’m pretty : ( about it too... I have a whole rant about that (not S2--about the fandom) but that’s not for public eyes. Just... I absorb the negativity and it’s not nice. But I also understand and empathise why people are so angry about it.
And then like... People I adore and respect... The fandom has made Klaus be such a way that a lot of people dislike Klaus now... And TBQH: I don’t blame them!! I hate the woobifying we see... People are allowed to do as they please!! But... It’s not to my personal tastes.
And really, I should just write what the fuck I want... I like writing Klaus as he is, and he doesn’t represent the fandoms id, and I like that. But for some reason it gets me down how many people dislike this character I really like....
And honestly, I probs just need to quietly unfollow the people who I absorb the most hurt and negativity off. Or I gotta get better at... IDK, emotionally shielding??
And I worry I’ve burnt out... This happens every time I do a 90k+ fic... : (
And the thing is: I have a really good writing streak going and I don’t wanna break it. And I worry... if I take a break... I’ll have writers block for another year, like I did all of 2019... T.T
So. Anyway. I’m gonna talk about some of the things I really wanna write... and maybe even include some snips... Maybe it’ll make me feel okay? IDK.
[And god, I miss writing my Museum ‘verse but I am pretty blocked there T.T]
But I’ve got a Five Times Diego and Klaus Celebrate Christmas Alone, and One Time They didn’t fic...
And I’ve got this fic... Where Klaus starts learning shibari to help with sobriety and practices on his siblings, and then Diego... well, Diego sinks into subspace so fucking fast.. And we get Diego struggling with submitting/bottoming and... >:) And smut. Much smut. And rope. I really like shibari.
And I have a few fics in the works for the Banned Together Bingo, but the one I’m most excited about involves Diego adopting a dog :O
And I was gonna write “Extra Ordinary” but... That would be sad and horrible. So I’ve decided that I wanna write Klaus’ version.
Here is a snippet:
It's always hard to tell what a person's earliest memory is. All of those years kind of blur together, and all the drugs I took probably didn't help with the memory. And then you've got those 'memories' which may not be memories at all, because they were told to you and you think you can remember them, but maybe you just created a false memory in your mind, and maybe you don't really remember it at all.
But all of that borne in mind: my earliest memory includes one, Diego "Number Two" Hargreeves, throwing his bowl of what I've been told was spaghetti-o's, right at Dad's stupid face.
If you know about Diego's powers, you can imagine why this was absolutely fucking hilarious then and is even funnier now.
If you've been off in the wild, being raised by wolves and have never encountered any form of pop culture, and thus don't know: Number Two has the ability to change the trajectory of objects in motion. No matter what he throws, it always hits its target.
And its target? Dad's face.
It was a masterpiece. Easily one of the best days of my life.
I don't know if this is actually my earliest memory. But I like to think it is.
And I just want... ridiculous stories of these kids... and they’ll be in Klaus Style, and then there’ll be a chapter where Klaus is like:
And then he locked me in a crypt for ten hours.
That’s it. That’s the chapter. So all this chaos... and then this seriousness, that’ll hopefully be so abrupt that it gives emotional whiplash.
And I wanna write a Hogwarts AU, Enemies to Lovers. I’ve got a few ideas... Like... Maybe each “year” is told from the perspective of each of the seven... Allison and Luther getting together early, but Klaus and Diego taking years to get there.... Five, resentfully, a Hufflepuff, and absolutely enamoured with Vanya. Ben, long-suffering. All of them playing Quidditch... HNNNGGGG. I have a lot of ideas here.... But no Plot TM.
And a What’s Your Number AU. That’s it. That’s the plot. Maybe... with Justin and David... Or Ben and Diego.... >.> IDK man.
And I want Demon!Klaus and Angel!Diego... No plot there. Just want it... Maybe I should watch Good Omens and see if that’d make a fun AU....
And then we have [look, I’m just going through my Scrivener rn...] a High School musical AU. Not the movie... But like... The kids are in a school, and it’s putting on a musical... Angry but shy loner Diego, who can seriously dance, and disaster Klaus, and Allison who wants to be the star of everything, and Luther just has such a crush on her and MUST be in the musical to play her love interest, otherwise he’ll never find the courage to talk to her....
And then! Another High School AU. Instead of Ben dying... he nearly dies. And Child Protection are finally like “hmmm, this is child abuse...” and takes the kids away. Allison, in a panic, Rumours that they stay together... And then... chaos. Throwing the seven into public school, when they’ve never interacted with others... God. The sheer ridiculousness... And I really love the ending I’ve got planned for it T.T
I’ve also got a few S2-inspired ideas... Klaus lands in the 60's but hits his head and doesn't remember anything. He doesn't remember that he can see ghosts and so ends up absolutely terrified, and put into an asylum. Diego lands a year later, and is also put into the asylum. He sees what might be Klaus, but no. No, it can't be… Or can it? T.T And then they gotta escape and... T.T
And then I wanna project all my feelings onto Klaus struggling with being touch-averse and yet also someone that desperately wants to touch the ones he loves, but... it makes his skin crawl. [SO MUCH PROJECTION.]
And then I have a fic idea that I can’t talk about because it’s a gift for someone...
And then... Justin and David fic..... >.>
And last night... I had an incredible idea for a sci-fi, dystopian AU... It’d be a lot more Serious than the other stuff I’ve written. And I REALLY want my writing powers back because I HAVE THINGS I WANNA WRITE... T.T And those are just the fic ideas that have words in Scrivener...
But this sci-fi thing would be.... it would be an Epic. But maybe I could do it in <30k... IDK.
Anyway. I was feeling good again, and then checked Tumblr and....
I’m going to try to crawl to bed and take a valium, because the mood is so low that it might as well be in the ground.
