Most people aren’t truly living…
They’re just existing.
Doing the bare minimum to get by.
No ambition…
No drive…
No enthusiasm…
No purpose.
Just floating through life.
People like that don’t win championships.
They don’t make a lasting impact on society.
They don’t contribute to anything.
…and nobody remembers them after they’re gone.
I bet since you’re reading this … you don’t want to end up that way.
You need to make the right choices on a daily basis that push you forward…
…and stop pushing everything off until “the timing is right.”
Life moves fucking fast.
Days turn into weeks…
Weeks turn into months…
Months turn into years…
…and if you don’t take action, you’ll end up looking back at your life with a massive feeling of regret.
Don’t just exist…
Live your life.

My particular writing style doesn't really lend itself to traditional punchlines, but instead to meandering daisy chains of paragraphs that wander the paths of thought for a while before coming back to what the characters are actually up to. And sometimes it's even a joke!
That same interconnectedness makes editing an absolute pain in the ass.

Last Piece of Bread
Dem peered into the bread basket. There was only a single slice of baguette left and their server, a scrawny teenager who’d introduced himself as Matt, seemed to have completely disappeared. She was hungry but she didn’t want to be rude and just eat the last piece of bread.
“Do you want to split it?” she asked, looking up toward Danette.
“Yeah, I do,” Danette replied, an equally hungry look in her eyes.
Dem reached forward and picked up the bread with her fingertips. Then, as delicately as she could manage she tore it into two pieces.
“Sorry,” she laughed. “I don’t know how to do this without squishing the shit out of it.”
“It’s cool,” said Danette, also laughing. “It’s still food.”

Shoutout to the other sort of writers.
the ones with a small idea, no universe or/nor barely even characters
the ones who have no idea where their story is or even going to be but dammit they're writing and will (probably) figure it out at some point
those who end up with longer stories only because they have no idea how to finish it
shoutout to the writers who have no fucking clue

A difícil arte de começar uma história:
Cap. 01
First look:
- Vick, have you seen my glasses?
- Honey, it was on the bedside table...
- Oh! I got it, I took it with me to the bathroom. - Mel (or Missy?) goes quickly to the bathroom and finds her glasses, in the sink, wet. Ew.
This is a common scene in Mel and Vick's daily life. Been together for almost 10 years, this kind of dialogue is one of the trademarks of the comfort for this couple, according to Mel. Vick is an architect, a force to be reckoned with, the person behind all the bureaucracy of Red Pepper, a creative projects company she opened with Mel. The other is responsible for the creative design.

The poetry contest I entered in January posted results this morning, and I just got a look-see!
Unfortunately, my collection was declined.
While I can't deny that I could have used a win for my writer psyche, it helps to remember that each rejected work stokes the embers of my ability and encourages me to continue writing and wanting to get my work out into the world.
And now, I'm off to do just that!

Fireside at Dusk
The fire in the rusted iron box crackled in the centre of the campsite, occasionally throwing a burst of sparks up into the evening sky. With the sun long gone, the sky had darkened to the point that, if one were to look upward, they would only just make out the shapes of the treetops against the dark blue. The fire, which was quickly becoming the only source of light in sight, cast its flickering orange light onto the tents, the car, the picnic table and onto the faces of the three people who sat around it.
The three friends sat around the fire in a near perfect circle, each of them sitting roughly the same distance from one another. None of them had planned or even noticed this symmetry in the same way, ten year prior, none of them had planned to still be friends and go on this camping trip together. Like most things in life, it was just the way things had ended up because things always ended up somewhere.

Note: I’ve been doing a little spelunking on AO2 and I think part of my struggle with publishing is rooted in a dramatic drop in all of my stats. It’s hard to keep waking up at 4 to work on a story that a dozen people are reading. Maybe.
I shouldn’t care. I know this. But I do care.
So, if I can hide the stats, if it’s takes extra effort to go and look it up, it won’t be the first thing I see every time I start to work on publishing a chapter. If this might help anyone else, this is what I’m using.
Major thanks to the anonymous angel who created this CSS to hide the stats on AO3.
