The antis have been all over my posts in the last few days, so I wanted to share my experiences and write a guide on how to deal with them.

First off: Our ships and character preferences are valid, no matter how hard some people try to demonize them. We are part of fandom and allowed to post about the things we enjoy, just like everyone else. Our fanfics, fanart, video edits, photo edits, etc. are all works of love and they deserve to exist and be explored by others.

✨ Strategies for dealing with antis ✨

Don’t engage. I have checked the bios of all the antis that left comments under my posts, and the majority of them are minors. You don’t want to talk to minors in fandom spaces!! And a conversation based on logic or reason won’t be possible either.

Delete their comments. Tumblr, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube allow you to delete comments, DO IT!! You created something with love and hateful comments have no place underneath it. Even if the comment just makes you uncomfortable and isn’t outright hateful, it is perfectly reasonable to delete it for your own sanity.

Block generously. Not only the people who target you specifically but also anyone who engages in character- or ship-bashing. People who do that for one ship will do it for other ships too and it’s extremely bad fandom etiquette. When you see a character or ship-bashing post, block everyone who liked it and then the poster.

Report people for harassment. The rules vary by site, but especially threats of violence should be reported. Also, if someone follows you to another social media site after you’ve blocked them, that is called block evading and you should report that too.

When you see other people getting hateful comments underneath their posts, leave a nice comment to offset some of the negativity. Your being supportive can make the difference between this person never posting again and them being motivated to keep going. People are always welcome to send me links to a post that is getting targeted by antis and I’ll like it and leave a nice comment. 🥰

Don’t let the bad comments outshine the positive ones! Every time my post gets enough traction for antis to find it, it also gets lots of lovely reactions. Many people have told me that my content and recommendations made them ship my OTP, and that is the single thing that makes me happier than anything else. Take a screenshot and look at these kinds of comments when you feel down. This is the real reason you should keep posting.

Most hate comments are exceptionally uncreative. It helps to laugh about it, preferably with a friend. ✨ Remember, you used your energy to create something and you should be proud of it!

When you see a creator you like, but they also display obnoxious behavior towards people who like other ships, characters, or dynamics, at the very least don’t give them a platform by sharing their posts.

Stay safe. Don’t post personal information online.

It’s completely valid to step away from social media for some time. Private your accounts, turn off notifications, do a canon reread, read some fanfics in peace. Whatever it takes to remind you why you love the things you love.

Bonus Tip: Watch videos of cute animals to destress. Bunnies nose-booping each other can (and will) cure anti-induced anxiety. :)

✨ Platforms sorted by least to most toxic and my advice for using them ✨

1. Discord

Discord is great because you can join servers specifically for your favorite characters and ships. If a server doesn’t already exist, consider setting one up! Pro tip: only invite people that have positively interacted with you in the past. A small server consisting of nice people is a lot more fun than a large server consisting of members that can’t get along or are only marginally interested in the topic.

Fandom Discord servers have clear guidelines on what you can post. As long as you follow the rules, people have no grounds for calling you out. In my experience, moderators are quick to respond to harassment.

When you join a server and you see they heavily restrict certain types of content, it is a red flag. Proceed with caution, even if you plan to only talk about “safe” characters and ships.

2. Tumblr

I have rarely gotten hateful comments on Tumblr, and the few times I did they were easy to delete.

A lot of the older fandom generations use Tumblr and they are more mature and accepting of all kinds of content.

3. Twitter

Twitter makes it easy to curate your own fandom experience. You can mute words you don’t like to see on your timeline, mute and block users, and most people have their ship preferences in their bio.

4. Instagram

My Instagram posts about Jadecest get a lot of positive interaction, even more than on Twitter. There are unpleasant comments once in a while, but they are easy to delete.

Blocking a user will delete all their comments from your posts.

5. YouTube

People who don’t like your ship will downvote your videos and downvotes lead to the algorithm not recommending your videos.

I have gotten a few negative comments, but they are easy to delete.

6. Reddit

When you post in a fandom subreddit, everyone will see the post, independent of their ship preferences.

There are a lot of minors on Reddit.

You can’t delete comments.

Most fandom subreddits are poorly moderated.

7. TikTok

I have gotten the most hate comments on TikTok. They can be filtered or deleted, but antis interacting with your video by leaving hate comments will lead to the algorithm recommending your content to even more antis. It can get very ugly.

If you post on TikTok consider turning off comments, stitches, and video replies. You can also mark your content as 18+, so it won’t get recommended to minors. (Again, antis tend to be underage.)

Platforms are more toxic the more they show your content to people outside your bubble. Discord, Tumblr, and Twitter keep your content relatively well contained to your circle of friends. Reddit, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram heavily promote your content outside your bubble, which is good, because more people are going to see it, but also bad, because it reaches more antis.

Antis are loud and obnoxious, but it’s important to remember that they are a minority. Ship and let ship still exists, especially among the people who have been in fandom spaces for more than just a few years. Don’t be afraid to post your content and express your love for your favorite characters and ships! I, for one, would love to see your creations, and many other people would love to see them too.

BTS Reacts: Biracial S/O Experiences Racism

A/N: Of course, something like this can be a touchy subject and I will take full responsibility if I write anything offensive or incorrectly. As I've said in previous pieces like this, you are welcome to call me out on any mistakes so I can learn and do better. I personally am not biracial nor have I experienced racism of the sort but my inbox is always open if you need support or someone to stand with you. Also, I apologize but I couldn't find credits for some of the gifs used. I take no credit for the making of them.

JIN:

Jin couldn't believe it when you pulled up an antis hate themed blog focused around you. He knew there would be some heat once your relationship was revealed to the public but he never thought people would be low enough to create an entire blog to bully you and insult you just based off of your skin color. It almost blew his mind that someone would take the time to put you down so badly. Jin would gently take your phone out of your hand and close the page, setting the phone down and out of view.

"Don't pay attention to a word they're saying. They're not worth your time, you're perfect the way you are."

Jin made sure the blog and nasty racist comments thrown at you were forgotten quickly, reassuring you that they were meaningless and simply not true.

YOONGI:

Yoongi had been out with Jin picking up food for the two of you when you decided to watch a few video compilations on YouTube that some fans had created for your relationship with him. Most of them were cute and wholesome videos with nothing but positivity in the comment section and you found yourself smiling widely throughout your time reading them. However, on the last video you had chosen, the comments made your heart sink. You weren't sure why they were there all of the sudden but many users had written harsh racist insults towards you, some even going as far as writing out threats. You knew it was stupid and the words were empty and didn't really mean anything but you couldn't control the tears that were forming in your eyes, eventually beginning to spill down your cheeks. Just as you were at peak sobbing and second guessing yourself, wondering if Yoongi really loved you as much as he said, he walked in the door, food bags in hand. Immediately, when he saw you curled up on the couch crying, he dropped the bags and sat on the cushion adjacent to you. He started rubbing your arm, unsure whether or not doing anything further was going to upset you.

"Woah, what's wrong sweetheart?" Your boyfriend asked, his voice soft.

Between sniffles, you did your best to explain how so-called 'fans' were being incredibly racist towards you and saying Yoongi deserved someone of his own race.

Yoongi couldn't believe what he was hearing and was only able to muster out a quiet "What the fuck?" He was pissed to know you were upset and pissed that anyone could say such things to you.

"Don't listen to those assholes, they don't know you and they will NEVER know me. I love you, you're perfect the way you are. They're probably just jealous that there's nothing even mildly interesting about them. They mean nothing."

HOSEOK:

*Ping*

Your phone had been blowing up more than usual. Your boyfriend, Hoseok, was sitting next to you so you opted to check it, wondering who else would be sending you so many texts. Lit up on your screen were texts from your best friend, telling you not to listen to what people are saying on Twitter and that all of those people were wrong about you. Confusion washed over you as you opened the Twitter app to see what was going on. The first thing you saw was your relationship with Hobi on the trending list. Your heartbeat sped up as you tapped on the link to checkout the corresponding posts. As soon as it opened, you were met with post after post about the live you did with him yesterday, where you had revealed your face for the first time. There were comments saying how pretty you were and how sweet you seemed, of course, but among these comments were floods of hate speech. Every single negative comment had to do with the fact that you were biracial. You suddenly closed the app, tossing your phone to the side, startling Hoseok. He closed the book he had been reading in the chair across from you and asked you what was wrong, moving to sit aside you when he noticed tears pooling in the corner of your eyes. All you told him was to check Twitter. Taking out his own phone, he clicked on the trending HoseokxYN link and skimmed through the posts and comments. He very quickly put his phone back into his pocket, unable to read anymore racist words against you. Pulling you into a tight hug, he reassured you that he felt sorry for those people, telling you that they must feel so badly about themselves and have such low quality lives that they had to spew meaningless hate towards you. If anything, they were lower than you and were only doing it to feel better about themselves. Even though the remarks were towards you, it felt painful to read such things and he was overwhelmed by disappointment.

NAMJOON:

As you and Namjoon made your way through the intensely growing crowd inside of the airport, fans yelled and screamed various words of encouragement towards Namjoon. You loved to hear other people showering him with love and positivity, despite the craziness of the crowd itself. You were smiling widely while walking hand in hand with your boyfriend, listening to the fans, until you suddenly heard someone take a jab at the color of your skin. Namjoon heard the person too, stopping for a brief second to turn and glare at them. He shook his head as he turned back around, gripping your hand tighter, pulling it up to his face to lightly kiss your knuckles. Like a chain reaction, that one person being brave enough to say such things to you in front of him set off a wave of more racism. Namjoon began walking even faster, guiding you the whole way, wanting desperately to get you out of there.

"Those aren't my fans. If they were, they would never say such bullshit things to you."

JIMIN:

Jimin witnessing you beginning to cry after seeing racist comments saying you weren't worthy of being with him because you weren't Korean hurt his heart. Your laughter was his favorite sound in the world and he lived to see you smile. Seeing you so upset was painful and made tears prick his own eyes. You were so important to him and yet strangers were bringing you down with nonsense hate. Jimin made sure to pound it into your head that he wanted you and only you; if he wanted someone who was 100% Korean, that's who he would have chosen.

TAEHYUNG:

After a long chat, you and Taehyung decided to reveal your secret relationship to the public after having been together for over a year. Taehyung took the bold leap by posting a couple of cute, romantic photos from Valentine's day on his Instagram. Knowing that it would warrant a little bit of craziness, he did it late at night before the two of you went to bed, planning on checking on it in the morning.

That next morning, Taehyung had woken up before you. Rather than waking you up, he went into the kitchen, fixed himself up some breakfast, and got comfy on the couch with his phone, ready to checkout the reveal reactions. He found himself giggling at some of the comments, even feeling happy over some of the supportive ones he read. Not long after reading, though, he stumbled upon comments he wished he hadn't seen. Many racist insults and death threats filled the comment thread. They were targeting you because you were biracial, spewing hate and saying he deserved better than you, someone who was fully his own race. He couldn't believe what he was seeing.

"How could these people say things like this?" Taehyung whispered to himself, still trying to be careful about waking you up.

The thought of you waking up excited to read the reactions of army only to see your race being the main focus of the thread made him very upset. He pondered whether he should delete the photo or not, wanting to shield you from everything. After a while of thinking, he simply turned off the comments to the post.

When you finally awoke, the first thing you did was ask him about the public's reaction. He produced a white lie and said the staff recommended that he turn the comments off but allowed him to keep the photo up. Although you were disappointed, he would much rather have you thinking that's what happened, instead of being aware of the nasty racist comments that flooded the post.

JUNGKOOK:

The last thing Jungkook expected when you tagged along on a flight and exited the airport with him, navigating through the crowds of screaming fans, was to hear several death threats and racist remarks thrown around towards you. He gripped your hand tighter and tighter with each disgusting comment he heard, knowing he couldn't do anything in that very moment. He glanced at your face multiple times, checking if you were still mentally there, only to see that you had begun crying quite hard. Instantly, Jungkook removed his jacket and held it over you to cover your face as various people with their phones and cameras hounded you. When you were both sat safely inside of the car waiting for you guys, Jungkook pulled you in close, kissing the top of your head while you buried it into his chest.

"You know I don't think of those things, right? I don't care about your race, I love you for you. Don't listen to those people, they aren't real army."

Q: How do you make your Cyberpunk 2077 screenshots? A: The main tool I use is the Appearance Menu Mod, which is used to spawn NPCs, decor, and lighting. I wrote a very detailed guide on how to get started with AMM, available here.

Please note as of December 2022, this guide is somewhat out of date, and I haven't had the time to update it. The method described here still works, but there are other options that are less cumbersome. You can check my CP77 Help tag for more recent information.

I also use Reshade for the Cinematic DOF and Real Long Exposure shaders, and I occasionally use the paid Otis Injectable Camera for hotsampling or if I need to unlock more camera movement. All color editing is done in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

Q: What mods do you recommend? A: I have a list that I update every few months that links all the publicly available mods I use in my game as well as a more general mod tag for any mods that look interesting/useful.

I’ve also dabbled in making some of my own mods (mostly pose packs), which are available for free at my Ko-fi shop.

Q: Is Valerie's preset/NPV publicly available? A: Nope, I only share Valerie with very close friends who I know will take good care of her.

Q: Is Valerie available for RPing or OC shipping? A: Although I'm very flattered by the interest, she is not. This is not a roleplaying blog, and while I love getting to know about other people's OCs, I'm currently not interested in Valerie having a romantic past with anyone else's characters. However, I am open to plotting non-romantic relationships between Valerie and mutuals' OCs. 💙

Q: Do you take commissions? A: I currently don't take commissions of any kind, although I am sometimes open to art trades with mutuals (art for art, VP for VP, or VP for art). I can't guarantee my schedule will permit it, but if it's something you're interested in, feel free to send me a DM! 💙

How has Ganondorf evolved throughout the series?

Well there's a lot of youtube channels that can show you that exact thing i'm sure. But I take it you want that in my exact words. But that will be a long one so buckle up... for that we need to go back to 1991. Back in those days, we only thought of Ganon as some kind of evil wizard pig. We didn't know he was originally a human. But A Link to the Past comes along and reveals that Ganon used to be called Ganondorf, and he was the leader of a gang of thieves.

Now, Ganondorf didn't appear in a Link to the Past, he was only ever mentioned by name... or was he? Because my theory is that he actually is in the game, going by a different name. That name being Agahnim, the human antagonist with an unusual skin color ( light blue in this case ) dressed in desert clothing, who earns the trust of the king, betrays him, is defeated by having his magic reflected back at him, is only able to be damaged by the master sword, and Ganon refers to him as his Alter Ego... as you pay attention to the history of Ganondorf, this makes a lot of sense.

Ganondorf would appear under his real name for the first time in the prequel to a Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time. Here he's the King of a gang of thieves who live in the desert ( which supports my Agahanim theory ), he has an unusual skin color ( green in this case ) who swears fielty to the King ( I guess we're not supposed to know he's the king of thieves yet? Or maybe this is one of those cases where the english translation doesn't cover some things, as i'm learning is so often the case ) who betrays the King ( where have I heard that before ? )

Anyway, Ganondorf makes quite an impression every moment he's on screen in this game, and even when he's not, as Ganondorf is the one responsible for all the happenings around Hyrule, you'd think the Zoras or the Gorons would warn the King of Hyrule or something but I guess they were too busy with their own problems, and Ganondorf is still playing softball, until he follows Link into the sacred realm to claim the Triforce. He's a pretty brilliant manipulator in this game, he continues watching Link until the moment he reveals Princess Zelda's whereabouts. He grows in power after the 7 year time skip, and ruthlessness as he's cusing problems in Hyrule that are now much much worse. I think he's still pretty sane here because he's not outright destroying Hyrule, he's keeping people alive as long as they don't oppose him. He's even having the likes of Lon Lon Ranch raise his horses. Also he gets a really cool design change after the 7 year time skip, it's a detail I really like that not a lot of people talk about....

oh yeah... and you defeat him by sending his magic attacks back at him...... where have I heard that before?

Anyone who beat OOT knows how it ends. Ganondorf is sealed away in the sacred realm and Link is sent back in time 7 years... but the power of that seal fades away over time. Ganondorf returns, and Hyrule is flooded.

Aged, tired, and desperate, Ganondorf takes up shelter in an abandoned Pirate fortress, clinging to what little relics of Hyrule he has. and gathering any monster forces he can reach, he sends his new pet bird, the Helmaroc King, to kidnap any girl in the great sea that they can find, in hopes that one of them will be the descendent of Princess Zelda, who would carry the Triforce of Wisdom. In a pretty unusual twist in the Zelda series, this Ganondorf remembers events from the past game, being sealed by the sages, name dropping the "Hero of Time", the title given to Link in Ocarina of Time. And he also opens up about his motives for obtaining the triforce. Jealousy and suffering. The harsh desert that was burning hot in the day and freezing cold at night was a living hell for Ganondorf and his people. He opens up to Link and even promises not to kill him despite holding a nearly unconsious Link in the air by his arm. This is very unusual but very interesting. He also comes so very close to getting exactly what he wants... the Triforce. Unfortunately, he does the thing a vilain shouldn't do when this close to victory, and he monologues. The King of Hyrule yoinks the triforce and makes his own wish before Ganondorf can touch it.

His defeat at the hands of the Hero of Time has cracked his mind just a bit, but he still manages to keep a pretty cool head up until this moment, where he just snaps. This battle kind of takes away the magic attacks. Those are still in the game, but is now mostly given to his phantom Ganon form. I kinda wish they kept some kind of magic attack in the final battle instead of just giving him sword and that's it.

Well Ganondorf gets a nice new pair of cement shoes at the end of this game. Or rather, cement everything. It's a fan favorite version of Ganondorf, and for good reason, it's probably the best.

Ganon is once again mentioned in name only in Four Swords Adventures. Supposedly he's not the same one from any of the prior games. Who really cares at this point. But in this game he is a younger Gerudo, possibly not yet the King of the Gerudo, who decides to break into an old tomb to steal some sort of powerful trident, presumably the weapon that changes him into the pig beast Ganon.

A quick side bar to talk about Ganon.... his origin seems to change from game to game and it kind of bothers me. We didn't know Ganon had a human form in the NES games but after a Link to the Past, it was assumed he became a pig demon because the Dark World changes humans into a form that reflects their heart... but then ALTTP had a prequel game, Ocarina of Time, where Ganon is just some kind of form he can take using the power of haltered. And the most recent example I know of just treated Ganon as a different entity than Ganondorf? It's so dumb and confusing. Anyway, back to Ganondorf.

In Twilight Princess, we're lead to believe there is a new Antagonist. A guy in black robes with a freaky metal helmet named Zant... but no, it's really more of a Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine situation, with Ganondorf being the Palpatine to Zant's vader... except Zant doesn't get a dignified redemption moment at the end.

We learn half way through the game that Ganondorf was the leader of a gang of thieves who was captured and sentenced to justice... and if you pay for a special collectors eidtion book, we learn that he was brought to justice for plotting to betray the King and steal the triforce, because the Hero of Time and Zelda ( as children ) warned the King about his plot before he could do it... this is... a very stupid way to handle connecting Twilight Princess's plot to Ocarina of Time, by simply not doing it until after the fact. But it is what it is... anyway...

Ganondorf is executed and sent to the Twilight Realm, where so many people were banished, they formed a society. But hatred and resentment lingered in the Twilight Realm, and Ganondorf was nourished by the power of that hatred and grew into a god...who made a deal with Zant, and escape back into Hyrule... or something, idk, the story is kind of wacked. Ganondorf is not as wise in this game because he didn't learn from his experience in Ocarina of Time, he was defeated earlier in the game.

Here, his magic is back.... kind of... he takes control of Zelda's body, and has a battle with Link very similar to Ocarina of Time. You have to reflect the magic attacks back at him... then he tranforms into Ganon,which is a bit strange to not save for last. Ganon, in this game, is very bestial. A quadruped, and more like a hybrid of lion and boar. It kind of reflects Link's tranformation into a wolf... then you have a horseback battle with him, then he falls off his horse like a nerd, and monologues again to save face, then comes at you with the same sword he was executed with, which left a gaping hole in his chest. It's pretty cool, but I have to admit, I really prefer magic weilder ganondorf to swordsman Ganondorf... you kill Ganondorf, who dies standing up, there's some cut dialogue that implies he will reincarnate for all time, which would have been better in my opinion than what they do next...

Side note... Ganondorf is so ugly in TP... especially the HD version.

Anyway, Ganondorf would not appear in a ( canon ) Zelda game for some time after that. Instead we get Akuma from Street Fighter as a final boss. Some big bad generic demon man who is just evil for the sake of evil, and exists at the beginning of the Timeline ( even though we already got a "origin of all monsters" story ) and HE is the one who says a reincarnation of his hatred will follow Link and Zelda's successors for all time, which I feel really robs Ganondorf of his agency and I hate it. I love Ganondorf as a character and this has done serious damage to him for me.

Anyway... there was also Hyrule Warriors but I don't remember the story of that game, something about a horny witch making the multiverse happen or something. Ganondorf had Super Saiyan 3 hair and I didn't like it... moving on.

Ganondorf was not in Breath of the Wild. I had my own theories about that. But Tears of the Kingdom threw a monkey wrench in that. I have not beaten the game yet, but I am getting the impression that when I do finish it, I will be left with more questions than answers.

Ganondorf in TOTK appears to be back to his old tricks of gaining a King's trust and then betraying him, but he's also not even trying to hide that he is in fact evil. Oh and also he's a mummy who can project an giant image of himself in front of the heroes to monologue, like Shredder in the Super Nintendo TMNT game. That's pretty sick... but the problem I have with this is that Ganondorf shouldn't exist in this game... unless I treat it as a different continuity than the main series... at least I think this will be the case... again, I have not beaten Tears of the Kingdom yet, but I am pretty sure I already know everything I need to and it's not going to solve my conundrums in a satisfying way, and I am just going to have to fix this broken mess myself. I will have to get back to you on all of this later.

But for now, that's my take on the evolution of Ganondorf.

A mater manipulator magician driven by a mix of jealousy and greed who aged into a desperate forgotten swordsman king, then turned into a generic evil overlord who was always destined to be an asshole, and now he appears to be a crusty old power hungry king that, I guess wants to actually destroy the world rather than rule it? I'm still unclear.

I really think he's not as appealing as he use to be, but I still like him.

EDIT: My god I sound like an idiot and I have made too many typos and grammatical errors and just generally poorly structured this whole thing, I can't be bothered to go back and fix it all.

And that’s the episode.

I like this show. The characters are great, the voice acting’s great, the art’s great, the story is interesting, the worldbuilding is interesting. I like it. Searching for Kipo’s people is a good plot hook; my biggest question about it is whether this is going to be an episodic story or an ongoing primary narrative. The cliffhanger we just had points to the latter, and I HOPE it’s the latter, but we’ll have to see.

Dave and Benson in particular are very fun. I’m a big fan of charming rogues done well, and the fact that they backed Kipo up almost without question speaks to their character. Mandu is...well, just a macot character, really, and one that doesn’t add a lot besides giving Kipo characterization about how she bonds with anything and anyone. Wolf is fairly fun, and I look forward to the slow cracking of her armor. Kipo, finally, is a pretty good protagonist; she’s fun to watch, fun to listen to, and both charming and endearing in equal measure.

I‘m looking forward to more of this show. I’m pretty sure the patron who picked it wants me to keep watching indefinitely, which is fine by me.

Did you mean the fictional drama movie 'What a Wonderful World' aka 奇異旅程之眞心愛生命 ? Or did you mean Lau's live concert, 'Wonderful World 劉德華香港演唱會 2007' ? Because that's at my local library if you want a dvd rip. Though I'm pretty sure it's not that, unless it's a 2008 re-release of the 1996 movie. Online searches are giving me conflicting titles and NO release year info ugh! I'm having no better luck at finding it to rent legitimately.

the 2007-2008 concerts i have on my external hard drive already (they're also. on youtube. just in case anyone is interested in seeing andy's concerts. they're extremely well-made like he's the most awarded cantopop artist of all time for a reason <3) which was named after the album of the same name that he released in 2007!

the movie though... the movie is hilariously hard to find especially in cantonese for some reason 😭 like there's also a guy in taiwan who's selling that movie on his ebay but that's the mandarin dub, and ive found another mandarin dub on a torrenting site but that's about it 😭 my written cantonese is like. non-existent tho so probably it's also the language barrier holding me back from searching the most likely places to find it lol

If you are being sent or tagged in this, that is because you have confirmed with me your interest in participating in this year's edition of the Movie Odyssey Award for Best Original Song (MOABOS). MOABOS, as many of you know, is part of my tumblr's end-of-year tradition to give Oscar-like awards to movies that I saw for the first time in its entirety this calendar year. This year will mark the tenth edition of MOABOS, and the ninth with outside involvement. A milestone year, one that I hardly imagined realistic a decade ago. It is a cinematic/musical thank-you to all of you for your friendship and support over the last calendar year.

But MOABOS itself is not until Black Friday (and I will give more details to first-timers when we get there)! Until then, we have a warm-up - of sorts - for all of you. Each of these ten songs are from films that I saw for the first time prior to the blog's creation on August 15, 2012 or are songs that I have realized, long after the fact, should've competed in one year's prelim or final rounds (age made me appreciate certain songs more than I did originally). There are ten songs here, which can also be accessed through this YouTube playlist.

Some of you may reflexively want to rank these songs out of habit, but that is for the preliminary that starts on Black Friday (however I'm not stopping anyone from ranking the following and sending in comments for fun).

Ten original songs from movies follow, representing ten decades, for your listening pleasure. Each one comes with contextual blurbs, as is typical for MOABOS. I hope you enjoy!

Performer Eddie Kearns (Charles King) is engaged, but he falls quickly for another girl, Queenie (Anita Page). At a rehearsal, Eddie gives an impromptu performance of this song, with Queenie by the piano side, and his fiancée raging off to the side. If you can get past the context, "You Were Meant for Me" has had a long shelf life as an American songbook standard and has been covered by many artists.

“Remember My Forgotten Man”, music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Al Dubin, Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)

Performed by Etta Moten, Joan Blondell, and chorus

Gold Diggers of 1933 might seem like a splashy, light musical. But look closer and you'll find tons of social commentary about the effects of the Great Depression on struggling artists. Appearing as the finale for Gold Diggers of 1933, this bitter song decries what happened to returning American veterans of World War I. This song contains references to the fate of the Bonus Army the year prior. The Bonus Army (17,000 WWI veterans and 26,000 of their family members and allies who marched on D.C. to demand the cash bonuses they were promised by the Dept. of War) was violently dispersed by the U.S. Army. The number of dead and wounded ranges wildly and will never be known. The choreography was by Busby Berkeley, who was noted for his kaleidoscopic mass choreography (which is more in evidence in other songs in this film).

“The King Who Couldn’t Dance (The Worry Song)”, music by Sammy Fain, lyrics by Arthur Freed, Anchors Aweigh (1945)

Performed by Gene Kelly and Jerry Mouse (voiced by Sara Berner)

Visiting a school, U.S. Navy sailor Joe Brady (Kelly) tells the children a fantastical tale about how he earned one of his medals. This being a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) film, the animation team under Joseph Hanna and William Barbera (of Hanna-Barbera fame) collaborated with the filmmakers to bring Jerry Mouse (and Tom, briefly) on-screen to dance with Gene Kelly. This is the first instance of Jerry speaking at length. We won't speak of the modern made-for-TV/streaming Tom and Jerry movies. Kelly is the one of only two human performers to be a part of a musical number with Tom and/or Jerry. The other is Esther Williams in Dangerous When Wet (1953).

Performed over the opening credits, as just-released-from-prison outlaw Frank Miller (Ian MacDonald) rounds up his gang, intent on murdering the just-married Marshal Will Kane (Gary Cooper), who originally sent him to prison. With Miller incoming, Kane decides that imminent retirement and his honeymoon with Amy (Grace Kelly), a Quaker and a pacifist, must wait. Shot in real time, High Noon is considered an anti-McCarthyism allegory and the title song is one of the most iconic in American Western history. Its melody is used across the film's score, composed by Ukrainian Jewish composer Tiomkin. The warbling sound you hear in the background is a Novachord, an early electronic instrument of Tiomkin's choosing.

This is the animated feature film version of The Lord of the Rings from director Ralph Bakshi (1972's historic X-rated Fritz the Cat and 1977's Wizards). Shortly after Gandalf's death by the Balrog and being granted refuge in the Elven haven of Lothlórien, Frodo and Aragorn* overhear this song from an unseen chorus. "Mithrandir" means "gray pilgrim" in Quenya, the Elven language constructed by J.R.R. Tolkien. This film covers The Fellowship of the Ring and the first half of The Two Towers; a second part to this film to complete the LOTR cycle was never realized.

Young Russian-Jewish mouse Feivel Mousekewitz has been separated from his family after arriving in New York City. The Mousekewitzes, in an allegory of the pogroms in Russia against Jews from the 1880s-1920s, have fled Russia because they have heard, "there are no cats in America". Uh huh. Sure. Feivel and his sister, miles apart, sing this duet, hoping to be reunited. The use in the film's context is definitely of a familial love that is lost in the end credits version.

Grimace at the South Park title if you will and the purposefully crude animation, but this movie is actually a very decent musical (the film was never marketed as a musical). The soulful "Up There" is sung by Satan after a dispiriting moment with his lover, Saddam Hussein. "Up There" is one of two songs in the soundtrack without any obscenities. This film is a satire about obscenity in films and TV and the reactions of late '90s parents and government officials over media content.

DRA are a little-known folk music group in Colombia and they did the music for this unfortunately obscure movie. "El Amor Amor" appears in the movie's first half as Carrillo (Marciano Martínez) and the young Fermín (Yull Núñez) are journeying to find the former's accordion teacher. Carrillo is an aging juglar (a troubadour) whose accordion - with two horns protruding from its sides - might be possessed by the devil (the film always makes this ambiguous). This song is a series of accordion duels, as Carrillo and Fermín happen upon a village throwing a music festival that evening.

Played over the end credits. This melancholic animated film is not to be confused with the unrelated 2006 live-action movie of the same name. Directed by Sylvain Chomet, The Illusionist was based on a story written by the late Jacques Tati, a mime whose M. Hulot character (1953's Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, 1958's Mon Oncle) proved popular even beyond France. The title character in this film is drawn to look like Tati. The Illusionist travels to late 1950s/early 1960s Edinburgh, Scotland after finding no work in Paris. While in Scotland, he befriends a girl named Alice who is transfixed by his magic tricks and kindness.

This song's three performers are performing to purposefully mimic the styles of seven singers famous in the Francophone world for their work in the lyrically-driven chanson genre. In order: Juliette Gréco, George Brassens, Barbara, Yves Montand, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, and Serge Gainsbourg.

So I was thinking about this promo and my own experiences as a Jewish person, and even though it isn't really recent or relevant anymore, more than one (2!) people expressed interest in hearing my thoughts, and apparently that's enough for me, so buckle up.

So before I talk about The Big Noticeable Thing, I wanted to talk about Jewish representation in media a little more generally. First of all, could there be criticisms about MJF's "rich asshole" character as it intersects with Jewish stereotypes? Yeah, probably. But right now I'm trying to focus more on the positives.

There is a certain character type Jewish people (specifically Jewish men) fall into in media: Sidekicks, passive, wishy-washy, weak, comedic relief, and, unless the movie is about the Shoah, almost never the driving force behind the story. So I'll admit, seeing a Jewish man who so effectively bucks those stereotypes- Aggressive, angry, talented, and a hugely powerful driving force- it made me happy. It's a way I rarely see people like me, and especially not in media for Goyish audiences- hang on to that last part, it'll come up again later.

So, onto The Big Deal- the quarters story. So, minor confession, I didn't watch the episode that this promo is from-I didn't really have access to a tv at the time. But the second it came out on youtube, one of my friends sent me a link with the message "You're going to want to see this."

As soon as I heard the words "rolls of quarters" my stomach sank, because I knew exactly how the story was going to end. Not going to go into too much detail, but I have a similar story (Freshman year of high school, cafeteria, pennies, "Pick it up, Jew"), and I know plenty of other Jews who share it. It's a common experience. To this day I don't pick up money I find on the sidewalk if there is anyone around, and I can directly trace why right back to that time in the high school cafeteria.

I wasn't shocked that he'd had that experience (regardless of if you think it was dramatized, I don't doubt for a second that something like that happened). Like I said, plenty of Jews have, more than you probably think. What shocked me was that it was being talked about. I have never seen an experience like this talked about on tv, and especially not so frankly, and doubly so for a goyish audience. For the first time, pretty much ever for me, someone was talking about my experience in public. They were talking about it, without couching or softening it or making it palatable so the goyim don't think we're complaining.

And the crowd booed him. The crowd listened to his (and my, and my parents' and my friends') story and decided the appropriate response to someone sharing an experience of antisemitism- dramatized or fictionalized or not- and they decided that was something that needed to be mocked and shouted down. One of the commentators (I don't recall who, and I'm not going to go and check) even remarked that they were making the wrong choice doing that.

As a Jewish person, that sends a pretty clear message: People don't care, and it shouldn't be talked about. It's not exactly a new thing to see-people have told me antisemitism isn't real, directly to my face and in real life- but I won't say that I wasn't surprised.

I don't know. There's not really a neat way to come up with a conclusion. On one hand I'm glad that this sort of thing was said, but on the other, I'm still disappointed in the reaction. I've probably embarrassed myself by rambling, but I had a lot of thoughts, and hopefully I did a decent job of explaining.

I guess I just feel like this was important, in a way that is really hard to put into words, but if you've experienced it you know- representation really does matter, even when that representation is a rich, egotistical asshole.

"Easy" ways to make money and why I haven't done them yet:

User generated content (ugc): you're a salesperson. You're contacting businesses with sales pitches. You're offering marketing services.

I may do this eventually because you can sell a video for like $500, but it's a bit too much interaction for me.

Blogging: I wither every time I'm not effusively encouraged. When you start, your audience is very small.

I also hate SEO and what it's done to the internet. This is the thing people focus on when they talk about using blogs to make money.

Simply put: it's difficult to keep doing this with depression.

Vlogging: I don't feel comfortable on YouTube because for over a decade, I've been a faceless commenter and enjoyer of content. The content is also skewed differently now that YouTube is hyperfocused on making money, rather than just hosting videos.

Tiktok makes you have 1000 followers before you can go live or put any links in your bio. I've had my second account for a year now, and I'm not even at 300.

Affiliate marketing is one of the ways that people earn, and I wouldn't mind doing that for a product that I truly enjoy, but it's difficult to find a product I like that people will actually be interested in, and the link thing really hamstrings creators who are just starting out.

Other people go live and just do whatever, because people can send you gifts and you can get money that way. Again, it's very difficult to gain any traction. Especially because tiktok suppresses things like social justice content, and I do a lot of videos in that vein. They don't like me.

There's other platforms that promise payment, but they're smaller and starting over is intimidating.

Petsitting: the people who say this is "playing with dogs all day" are clueless or lying to you. Full time petsitters don't take vacations. My former boss put out a help wanted ad saying you don't get sick days.

The dogs don't stop needing you just because you're not up to it that day, and I'm tired of my job involving living beings that might be harmed if I'm not on top of things. I would like lower stakes please.

Rideshare: I do not want anyone else in my car.

They don't want to ride in my car either. It's messy and the bumper is dented.

Delivery: see the first sentence for petsitting.

Dispatch doesn't care if the weather is bad. They want you to go faster at all times. This isn't conducive to safety or gentle handling or accuracy.

A lot of it's also contract work, so they don't pay for your health insurance, they don't invest in vehicle maintenance, and if you get in a wreck at work, your standard car insurance doesn't want to cover it. Insurance companies offer additional work insurance plans, but honestly if you can it might be best to just lie.

Delivery drivers, as a general rule, do not make much. The ads for the higher end of the income range rely on generous tipping, and if you're doing something like doordash sometimes customers start off with a tip to incentivize you to take their order and then remove it before they pay.

It's also not super fun to deliver food when you're hungry, and if you need the money badly enough you might not be able to get enough good while you're driving. It's torture. I much prefer delivering packages.

Speaking of packages, every location is different. Apartments are difficult to navigate and most customers don't give you detailed instructions for getting to their apartment, so you either have to call while driving or figure it out yourself.

It's taken me an hour to find an apartment before.

Virtual assistant: you have to manage things I don't even manage for myself and also talk to people. No thanks.

Burger flipping: I'm only including this one because it's one of the most notorious. One of the most difficult, high stress jobs you'll ever do. They probably don't care if you get sick. Some don't even care if you need water. Absolutely not.

MLM stuff: no.
