The Final Promise₊˚✩⊹
Chapter 9
Linked Universe x reader
Warnings: a LOT of angst and negative mental health, little fluff, Legend being Legend, some hints at spice
₊˚✩⊹
“Where the hell are we, Champ?” Legend groans, shaking his head.
Wild pulls out his slate, “We’re home! My hom- Hyrule, at least. We’re just past the Great Plateau, Southwest.”
He looks at the map a bit closer, “Close to Gerudo Highlands, actually.”
Your ears pick up at that. You were back on course, in a way.
“How far till the last stable before the desert, Wild?” you ask. He taps his chin in thought.
“Well if we start moving now, we could reach it by nightfall probably.”
And with that, you and the group started walking. You didn’t have Epona with you, so everyone was on foot. You walked with Twilight and Hyrule, talking about anything, you weren’t actively listening. You were too busy staring at Legend’s backside, as if you were trying to make him look at you.
“You good, Sugarplum? You’ve been zoned out for the past 20 minutes or so.” Hyrule whispers to you. Curse everyone for being so damn observant.
You nodded, “Yeah, just uh. I don’t know, a lot’s on my mind.” you mumble, finally pulling your eyes away from the Vet. Your staring wasn’t going anywhere.
“Are you and Vet ok? It seems like something’s going on between you two, but I don’t wanna assume.”
“We’re just stressed about our own situations. Nothing to worry about.”
“You should talk to him, y’know. That usually helps.”
“I trie- I will. I’m just a bit mentally preoccupied at the moment.” you said with a sad smile, Hyrule nods at you in understanding.
“I’m here for you, if needed.”
You keep walking, eyes focused on the terrain ahead of you. The red rock of the Gerudo Highlands were always quite a sight, even in game, but seeing them for yourself for the first time in ages was incredible.
The day passed relatively quickly, the only sounds being that of the wind and the occasional chatting between the boys. You didn’t talk much, not exactly having the social battery to converse.
You walked up to Time, as you always fell into comfortable silence with him and you felt like you haven’t spent much time with him since your incident. He gives you a quick glance, looking back at the path ahead.
“I can hear you thinking, Y/n. What is it?” he asked, still not looking at you.
You fumble with the straps on your harness, a nervous habit.
“I, just, uh feel like we haven’t had much time together lately.”
You think for a second. Wait.
“That wasn’t supposed to be a pun. Sorry.”
“I know what you meant, its alright. No need to apologize.”
“I feel like something else is on your mind though, Y/n. I think I may know what, but… I don’t know if now is the best time or place to talk about it. I don’t want the younger ones snooping in things they shouldn’t be.”
You laugh, “Time, we’re with grown men and one pre-teen.”
He scoffs, “They act like children.”
“You’re not wrong.”
You both stay quiet for a moment, taking in the serenity of the evening, the sun starting its descent into night. You can make out the faint plume of smoke in front of you, meaning that the last stable before Gerudo Desert was coming up. Looking up, you can see a few wolves on the snowy tops of the valley, looking down at you and your group. They howled for a bit, no doubt being curious and/or displeased with your presence in their territory.
You felt a shiver go up your spine, tickling the back of your neck.
“God, I forgot how cold the valley can get towards nighttime.” You pull out your only sweater, the famous Link hoodie that the group made fun of you for, but hey, at least you won’t freeze.
Pulling the hood up, you sighed in content. You sure will get some looks, but you were willing to sacrifice your dignity.
You all approached the stable, Wild jogging up to the innkeeper, checking you all in. Luckily, Wild had sold some precious stones earlier in the day with a merchant, so he had enough to pay for all of you.
“Inn’s kinda full, so we’re gonna have to share beds. I’ll share with whoever, don’t really have a preference.”
A few groans reverberate through the group, but there’s no conflict in pairing up.
Four walks up to you, hand on his knife holster, “Looks like it’s gonna be you and me, you ok with that?” You shrug, not like you had another option anyways.
You both walk to the vacant bed, which happens to be toward the very back of the inn, opposite of the main office. Wild’s inns were cozy, its just all the open space and vulnerability made you anxious.
“I’ll be right with you, don’t worry. I know how the lack of divided rooms affects you.”
Ah, so he knew.
“Thank you, Four. I don’t know why I’m so squeamish around large, vast spaces and not with tight spaces. It’s usually the opposite for people.”
He nods. You both unpack your belongings, Four placing his and your packs under the bed, away from prying eyes. You fidgeted with the necklace he made you, feeling yourself zoning out.
“You two good? Dinner’s almost ready!” Wars yells out to you both from the entrance. Four smiles, and you two walk out the inn towards the small campfire Wild made.
“If you start kicking me at night, I’m kicking you off the bed.” Legend says to Wind.
“I don’t kick!!” he exclaims, throwing his arms up.
“I’ve slept right next to you plenty of times to know you do fuckin’ combat in your dreams.” Vet mumbles, eyes briefly glancing at you.
You sit down on the ground, leaning against Sky. God, you were tired. Sky leaned over you, “How are you, Dove?”
You just groan, leaning against his leg.
“Yeah, same.”
You shiver again. Sky looks at you, then reaches behind him, grabbing a blanket. Where did he get that?
Leaning over you, he drapes it over you, tucking you in. You beam at him, “You’re so sweet, thank you Sky.”
Leaning against his leg, he absentmindedly brushes through your locks while you look into the fire. Wild gives you a smile as he tosses a few mushrooms in and a few dashes of goron spice.
You look to your left, Legend’s eyes on yours. He looks exhausted.
You glance back at the fire, feeling a blush creeping in at the attention from him.
“You excited to head into Gerudo Town tomorrow?” Wild asks, still stirring the pot.
“Yeah! I haven’t had the chance to meet Riju yet. I also can’t wait to finally try the Hydromelons, you keep goin’ on and on about them.” you smile.
Wild chuckles, “They’re delicious and beneficial, especially for the heat during the day. I even have a spare Vai outfit for you, so you shouldn’t struggle as much. I’ll give it to you after supper if I remember to.”
You nod. You don’t really pay attention to the rest of the conversation, no one bothering to bring you out of your daze.
~
Considering how exhausted you felt just over an hour ago, you were awake as can be in bed. You tossed and turned for what felt like hours, trying to find the right spot to doze off in. Four was out the second he hit the pillow.
Sighing heavily, you sit up and hop off the bed, walking towards the entrance of the inn. The lights were barely on at this point in the night, but you could make out the sleeping forms of the heroes as you passed by them. You grabbed a spare blanket from on top of one of the crates in the in and wore it like a cape, walking over to the small fire. You were surprised to find Legend sitting on a log, staring into the fire. He looked up when he heard your footsteps, eyes widening the slightest bit at the recognition of your face.
“Couldn’t sleep.” you mumbled, sitting a few feet away from him. He doesn’t respond, continuing to stare at the fire.
The silence is awkward.
“You look tired. You should sleep.” you say cautiously, not wanting to start conflict.
“‘m not. Can’t sleep anyways.” he mumbles.
Another moment of silence passes.
“Did I do something?” you ask, voice small.
He still doesn’t say anything. You were getting on edge, this wasn’t like him. He’s snarky, quick to talk back.
“What’s going on with you? A few days ago you were teasing me and goofing off with Wind and now you barely say a word, if that. If it’s something I said or did-”
“You didn’t do anything, Y/n.”
“You say that but you still won’t even look at me or talk to me. What are you so afraid of-”
“For the love of- Stop. Fucking stop. You don’t know me, stop trying to act like you care.”
“Excuse me?”
He finally looks at you, eyebrows furrowed and knuckles white on his knees, weeping to be relaxed and unclenched. He looked angry, scared, betrayed, horrified.
“I see how you look at me, full of pity and sadness, like I’m some fucking charity case to you. You think you may know all about my past, just because you’re our-my guide, but you don’t. You can’t even begin to imagine what I feel. What I have to be reminded of every time I close my eyes.”
“Link I don’t pity you and I have never pretended to know exactly what you went through. I know I was there, but I also know I don’t know what it was like for you and how it affected you.”
“I see how you are with the others. Time? Twilight? They look at you in ways I’ve never seen them look at someone. Hell, everyone looks at you like you’re some goddess descended upon Hyrule. I fucking- I can’t stand it.”
“I-”
“I don’t even know why you’re with us, Y/n. Why the fuck are you here, dealing with this prophecy cult bullshit? You could’ve avoided this if you weren’t stupid-”
“I NEVER FUCKING ASKED TO BE HERE.”
He seemed to shut up at your exclamation.
You took a shaky breath, already feeling the tears spilling from your eyes.
“You think I asked to be dragged through a portal, possibly never being able to come home? You think I fucking wanted this? I never wanted to become some ‘guide’ or ‘goddess’ as you put it. I’m just a nobody, a fucking girl that’s depressed and found comfort in characters that she could relate to, but I guess I was wrong. I can’t relate at all. To you, to Time, to any of you. I’m just some sorry excuse of a guide that’s scared of being alone and left behind.”
You were sobbing at this point, snot running down your chin, the tears clouding up your vision in front of you.
“I’m sorry I’ll leav-”
“Please don’t go. I need you, Link.”
Legend paused at that, processing your words.
“Ok. I’ll stay.”
You cautiously cuddled into his side, panting for air from your panic attack.
You needed him.
“I need you too, Mouse.”
You looked up at him at the mention of your nickname. His eyes were bloodshot, as if he had been crying for days on end. He wiped your tears away with his thumb, eyes not leaving your face.
“Kiss me, Link.”
And he did.
Legend groaned slightly into your mouth, causing you to gasp. He took it as an invitation to run his tongue along yours, your tears still running into your mouth, making your lips taste salty. He ran his callosed hands down your back and pulled you in closer, as if he was afraid this was a dream and you’ll leave him.
Just when you thought he was done, he pulled you onto his lap, blanket falling off your shoulders onto a heap on the ground. He moaned into your lips, making you press yourself against him, chest to chest. You wanted, needed more.
“More, Link-ah.” you whined.
He seemed to slow at your whining, coming back to reality. He sighed, placing his forehead against yours.
“I want to, Mousey. Trust me, I do, I just… someone might walk out here.”
You groan into his shoulder, but he was right. It was too risky.
He lifts your face off of his shoulder, tilting your chin up “But once we have some privacy I’ll give you more, ok? I promise.”
You flush at his words, knowing what he was insinuating.
“We should go in, before someone starts panicking. Would you… want to sleep next to me?” he asks, the tips of his ears bright pink. You nod, picking up the blanket from the ground. You suddenly felt very sleepy.
Following Legend back into the inn, you noticed Wind had fallen off the bed and made his way into Four’s bed, which seemed all a little too convinient for your current situation, but you were too tired to care.
You flopped into bed, and Legend followed suit, stripping his sheath and outer tunic before cuddling up to you. He placed a kiss on your forehead before whispering, “Goodnight, my little mouse.”
~
“Rise and shine fuckers!!”
You groan into your… pillow? That’s weird, when did it become so firm-oh. Oh.
The “pillow” groaned, rubbing his face with his hands. His pink hair was all over the place, under eyes still as droopy as ever. Yawning, he looked down at you with a sleepy smile.
“Guessin’ you slept well?”
“Huh?”
“You drooled all over me.”
“Oh, grossss. I’m so sorry Leg-”
“Don’t worry about it, I got another tunic in my pack.”
You stop to look at him. Really look at him. You haven’t had a moment like this with him… ever. He looked so happy, eyes crinkling in the corners, half unbuttoned tunic, hair messy from sleep. You wanted to see him happy. All of them, happy.
“Alright, love birds! Breakfast and out let’s go, let’s go!” Wind yelled again, clapping his hands.
You both rolled your eyes, begrudgingly getting out of bed. You pulled your tunic on, lacing it up in the back. You looked up while lacing to see him staring at you. He gave you a wink and went back to getting dressed as if it was another day on the job.
How the hell is he so casual about this?
You didn’t have time to dwell as Wild’s cooking snapped you out of your daze, bringing you outside to the same pot you and Legend were sitting at just a few hours ago. Legend was alreadyeating, looking up at you mid-bite for a moment before continuing to eat.
You sit in between Four and Warriors, Wild handing you a plate before you sat down.
Before you had a chance to take a bite, Wars asked “Where’d you and the Vet go last night?”
Shit, was he awake that entire time?
“We both couldn’t sleep, just sat by the fire for a bit.”
“Chat about anything?”
You narrowed your eyes.
What the hell was he getting at?
“Just… stuff. What are-” “Jeez Cap, leave her alone, would ya?” Vet snaps, already back to his typical snarky self. You mouth a ‘thanks’ to him, finally able to dig into your food. A few of the others exchange looks, curious about the sudden defensiveness Vet had over you.
You’d have to clear things up with Wars later, as Wild was ushring you back into the inn the second you finished chewing your last bite of food, needing to get you changed into more appropriate clothing.
“I managed to buy another vai outfit a few months back, I hope you like red.”
Wild hands you a bundle of soft red fabric, embroidered with silky golden thread and lace trim. Jesus, this looked expensive.
“Wild, you sure? This looks really expensive.”
“It really wasn’t, trust me. Now come on, we gotta get dressed and head out, Riju is expecting us.”
You nodded, already starting to strip your outer layers while Wild went outside to change. Thankfully, nobody was inside the inn so you could change quickly and quietly without any prying eyes. You catch a mirror in the far corner of the inn, deciding to take a quick once-over before you go out, and check on your healing back.
You turn around and your breath hitches.
Your wounds are completely gone.

Breaking the Collar
Nine months in the human trafficking circuit has destroyed every sense of normality you ever knew. For you, it's commonplace to be ordered on your knees for your owner, his clients, anyone else Childe deems necessary—and you've reached a point where you accept it this misery, just going along with the motions of life because there's nothing else to do.
Diluc and Kaeya change that.
They enter your life on a regular workday afternoon, stepping inside Childe's massive office under the pretense of sorting out a business deal, but a single hastily written message makes it clear that they're not here to hurt you: they're here to help you.
The only issue is that you have no idea how to escape Childe.

MASTERLIST
There’s something demeaning about the outfit Childe has picked for you today. It’s nothing unlike what he had you wear when he last took you outside the apartment, when he brought you on a train to Xiangling’s restaurant, but the blouse and skirt he has you in today are looser than before, and skimpier, too.
The thought confuses you until you realize that it’s because where you were previously dressed like a regular girl, in fairly modest clothes that were designed to shy away from attention, you’re now dressed like a slave once more: like a little sex toy that can only wear thin, loose clothes so her owner, alongside all her owner’s friends, can have easy access to the pretty tits and cunt beneath.
It should make you sick.
Yet, as Childe slips his hand underneath your skirt to grip your thigh, the only thing that disgusts you is how easily you find yourself relaxing into his touch.
“Angel,” Childe murmurs into your ear, voice hovering lowly under the quiet buzz of the van you both sit in. “Angel, I have a present for you.”
That catches your attention. You turn your head to your owner, eyebrows lifted in confusion, as Childe pulls a box from his pocket.
Immediately, you know what’s inside.
The first few gifts Childe gave you were all varied: the very first was, of course, the necklace he gave you in place of the ugly, metal collar all the other girls have to wear. The second was his jacket, too tattered for him to use anymore but literal paradise for someone like you, who had already grown used to spending every waking moment naked. Then, his presents began to come in the shape of services rather than material objects—the decision to allow you to sleep on a bed, the decision to let you eat better-quality meals, the decision to spare you from being sent to Scaramouche for a beating as punishment for a stupid blunder you once made—but after a certain period, Childe had granted you all the freedom he could give.
Then, his presents had to change.
He began gifting you jewels, all of them in different colors but always unfairly expensive, to make your collar sparkle.
You make no haste in opening the black, velvet box Childe gives you, eyes bright. You don’t think twice about how embarrassing it is that he’s conditioned you to associate these little gemstones (probably worth mere pennies to a man as wealthy as Childe) with happiness, but even you can’t keep the smile off your face as you snap open the box and see a blue twinkle staring back at you.
“It’s a sapphire,” Childe explains, pulling the gemstone out by the short, silver chain it dangles from. “Since you told me that you like colorful stones.”
You remember saying that. It was true: being Childe’s favored toy meant that you were always by his side; it gave you no room for pastimes, and so you found that the most entertaining thing to do was toy with the shiny stones that dangled off your collar and angle them into the light to trace patterns into the ceiling. It’s an activity that works best with larger, colorful stones: the dainty diamonds Childe always used to gift you didn’t work half as well.
“Do you like it?” the man asks, staring down at you. “I thought you deserved a reward so behaving so well last time we went out. If you’re good this time as well, I’ll give you another one.”
I won’t be here for you to give me another one, you think.
“I like it,” you say, ignoring how your heart instinctively speeds up with—is it fear? concern? hesitation?— when that thought runs through your mind. “Thank you, Sir.”
Childe grimaces.
“I mean, Ajax.”
Calling him by his name is still a hard habit to get into, but you find that the syllables roll off your tongue much smoother now. Alas, you shouldn’t need to worry about it too much longer. Not if today’s meeting with Diluc and Kaeya goes as planned.
“Here, lean forward so I can put it on you.”
The way you arch your neck forward is familiar. You and Childe have been in this position countless times before, him always being the one to fasten his gifts to your collar, and it shows in how quick Childe’s fingers are in attaching the short chain of the sapphire to your necklace. Within seconds, you feel the task’s completion as you lean your head back and smile at your owner, the weight around your neck marginally heavier than when you both stepped inside this van.
“It looks good,” Childe says, squeezing your thigh gently. “You look good.”
“Thank you,” you say like a good little slave. Then, you decide to go the extra mile. “Ajax.”
The man doesn’t respond to that, opting to glance out the window as his driver speeds down the highway that’ll doubtlessly bring you both to the office Diluc and Kaeya share, but you can see the edges of his lips curling upward. It’s rare, after all, for you to address him by name. No matter how much he loves it, your tongue still says “sir” on instinct, a little crack in the homey picture Childe is building with you in his mind.
It’s not like it matters, you think, stopping yourself from thinking too much about your owner before you can begin to feel bad. If all goes well, I won’t ever have to see him again.
The thought instinctively brings a smile to your face, but it falls just as fast.
If.
Looking back, the message Diluc and Kaeya gave you was cryptic. ‘WE CAN HELP YOU’ provides no accurate timeline to place your hopes in. The second message, ‘COME WITH TARTAGLIA NEXT WEEK AND WE CAN FREE YOU’ was of the same nature. Up til now, you’ve been vaguely interpreting their words to mean that they would free you immediately if you managed to go with Childe to this meeting. But the human trafficking world is so complicated, and you can’t help but think that things may be delayed even longer.
All you can do is hope for the best and pray that reality won’t disappoint.
“How much longer?” you ask your owner after the view outside the window has changed from a highway to a cityscape.
“Impatient, aren’t we?” Childe chuckles. “We should be there any time soon. Keep an eye out. Their office is in one of the big buildings.”
That doesn’t tell you much, given that nearly every building this van drives past is over fifteen stories high.
You’re in the middle of scoffing at Childe’s poor description of the office when the car finally stops: and only then do you understand that when he said “one of the big buildings,” he meant the biggest fucking building in the entire city.
You’re gawking like a fool as Childe helps you out of the car, mentally overwhelmed at the sheer size of what has to be the tallest office in Snezhnaya.
“It’s…”
Big doesn’t begin to describe the grandeur of this place. It’s nothing you’d expect from two men who are working undercover to free people from human trafficking: it's got to be the most eye-catching thing you've ever seen, one hundred stories high or taller, with every inch of the exterior covered in wall-to-wall windows. It looks like an upscale version of Childe’s own office, and if you thought his building was lavish, then this is full-on opulent.
Your owner has to forcibly pull you forward to get you to move.
You almost forget to tuck your precious jacket—the one you so foolishly forgot when you last went out in public, the one Childe insisted you bring this time in case you have another episode—underneath your arm because you’re so busy marveling at the exterior of the building, though you thankfully remember to do so right before the van door closes.
“It’s nothing impressive,” Childe grumbles as he pulls you past the professional double doors. “Diluc and Kaeya are only renting the top ten floors here. They’re not even rich enough to purchase them.”
“Ten whole floors?” you ask, eyes round as you stare at the inside of the ground floor. Childe tugs you towards the elevator, and you’re just barely able to slow him down so you can stare at the marble floors, the expensive-looking paintings on the wall, the embodiment of wealth unlike anything you’ve ever seen. “Why do they need ten—”
“They’re sex traffickers, angel,” Childe tells you when the elevator doors shut. (You have to force yourself to refrain from marveling at how even this elevator seems posh and refined.) “They use the top floor for their own operations. The other nine are where they run their prostitution rings.”
Your face darkens at that. It must be the exact same as Childe’s office, where he has you and his other favored prostitutes up at the top with him, and all the girls he doesn’t want to show favoritism to are forced into the life they were meant to follow when they were brought into the human trafficking world: either as unpaid sex workers that are sold by the hour from Childe to other equally-awful clients or as human trafickees to be shipped to someone else if they prove to be too much trouble.
But then, you remember Diluc and Kaeya’s message.
‘WE CAN HELP YOU,’ they said.
There’s no way that they’re running a sex trafficking front up here. Childe must be wrong. It’s probably just a lie they told him to gain his trust so that they could best help you escape this life.
“They’re so arrogant,” Childe grumbles, crossing his arms. “I bet they chose this office just to piss me off. It’s bad business, too. They’re losing out on money by choosing such a fancy place. Not even the Snezhnayan sex work model will boost their profits.”
“What’s the Snezhnayan sex work model?”
“The system we use in the Fatui. It’s supposed to be the best, money-wise. You hand-train the elite girls as prostitutes so that the best ones become magnets for high-caliber clients. You sell off girls who don’t show promise early on. And then there’s a handful of average-quality, compliant girls you keep for the low-caliber clients that want a good fuck but can’t pay as much.” Childe folds his arms as he leans back against the elevator wall. “It's the most profitable method, even if it means that the girls you sell will always be low-quality.”
“Wouldn’t I be an elite girl?” you ask, staring at your owner. “You trained me, but I never had to work as a prostitute. And I only sometimes have to meet your clients, and—”
“You’re different,” Childe says, avoiding your eyes.
Immediately, you want to ask what he means by that. Unfortunately for you, the elevator doors open at that precise moment, and Childe leads you forward by the hand into an office that, now that you think about it, definitely was designed to upstage Childe’s own place of work.
“Come on, you can do it, baby.” A low coo from the left side of the room draws your attention, and your eyes widen in a mix of confusion, concern, and finally, horror.
“Ignore Kaeya. Focus on my fingers. Relax your throat, doll, yes, just like that…”
Even Childe stiffens when he sees the three men splayed out on a couch: Diluc and Kaeya sandwiching a youthful-looking boy between them as Diluc shoves his hand down the boy’s throat and Kaeya strokes the boy’s small cock.
For a moment, you don’t understand why the boy looks so wrecked, his braided hair dampened with sweat and his face covered in tears, but when your eyes watch as a trickle of sweat trails from the boy’s neck to his stomach, joining a copious amount of white fluid you can only imagine to be the result of countless orgasms, it’s clear that Kaeya’s overstimulating him. Add that to the way Diluc’s entire hand is slotted down the poor boy’s throat, and how the redhead is still stubbornly trying to get more inside, and it becomes clear that whatever this boy is feeling is far from pleasant.
The picture makes it irrevocably clear that this boy is to Diluc and Kaeya what you are to Childe.
Instinctively, you imagine how you would feel if you were in such a position. Your worst memory under Childe, after all, is from the time when you were handed over to four men who fucked into your G-spot so vigorously that you cried at any sensation for hours. Your second worst memory is from the time when a client forced a massive dildo so big you couldn’t breathe down your throat and left you like that until Childe intervened.
The idea of those two memories being combined into one makes you want to vomit.
“Fucking hell,” Childe grunts once he’s past processing the image before him. “Get your toy out of here. Do you have to be so disgusting?”
“Oh, please,” Kaeya responds, not an ounce of hesitation in his voice. He doesn’t stop stroking the boy’s cock. “You had your little angel out during our last meeting. Let us have a little fun now, alright?”
“Hell no. Even I don’t dabble in…” Childe sneers when he sees how young the boy seems to be. “Children.”
Diluc laughs, a deep, rich sound that reverberates through the room. “He’s older than he looks. We’re not scummy enough to deal in children, either, Tartaglia.”
“You’re scummy enough to have to share,” Childe says, scoffing. “What, did you guys spend so much money paying for this building’s rent that you couldn’t afford more than one kid to suit both your needs? The two of you look pathetic, you know.”
“I wouldn’t call it pathetic,” Kaeya offers. “It’s more like we know exactly what we want. And if we both want the same thing, we’re not going to waste our time with…” The man’s single eye skirts over your figure with purpose. “Cheap replacements.”
“Really, now?” You can sense Childe getting offended for you. “You think your little toy is better trained than my angel?”
“I don’t think it, Tartaglia. I know it.” Kaeya grins. He gives the boy’s cock another few strokes, going at the same pace, the small, red-flushed thing twitching furiously in response. “Just watch.”
Kaeya abruptly pulls back from the boy, lifting his hand in the air for dramatic effect, and one, two, three seconds pass where nothing happens. The little organ he’d been stroking still quivers, either from overstimulation or from desire, but the boy suppresses his orgasm, and you can see the desperate, shallow breaths he tries to take from around Diluc’s hand.
Then, it happens.
“Cum, Venti.”
On command, the boy keens, eyes rolling to the back of his head as his hips spasm and jerk up into nothing. Venti’s cock looks abused, a thought demonstrated by how little cum actually shoots into the air and onto his stomach, the substance looking more watery than it looks healthy.
You grimace when you understand how far Venti must have been pushed to reach this point.
The boy practically melts into Kaeya’s hold after the orgasm has left his body, boneless after something so intense, and the final shreds of resistance he’d been offering Diluc’s hand disappear as the redhead’s wrist edges deeper into his throat.
“Such a good boy, isn’t he?” Kaeya says, grinning as he strokes Venti’s hair, brushing the sweat-stained bangs from his forehead. “He’s ‘Luc’s favorite. We haven’t had any discipline issues from him in years. Same goes for the rest of our merchandise.”
Kaeya’s words are a shameless flex on Childe: a reminder that your owner’s girls are so often poorly-trained and that even you, the star of his trafficking business, are secretly planning on running away.
You don’t need to look up at your owner’s expression to see the raw annoyance plastered onto his face.
“No discipline issues?” Childe grunts. “So if I bought him from you and ordered him to kill himself right now, he’d do it?”
There’s a beat of silence.
Whatever response Kaeya was expecting, that wasn’t it.
Finally, Diluc speaks up.
“Venti, much like your toy over there, isn’t for sale.” Diluc withdraws most of his hand from the boy’s mouth, leaving only the tips of his fingers in such that Venti cranes his neck forward to suckle at them. “But if you want him gone that much, it’s fine. He has to go to work now, anyway.”
You can feel your eyebrows shoot up at that. Kaeya watches your expression, and he laughs.
“Sorry, girlie. I know your master over there likes to exercise preferential treatment with his pets, but we don’t do that in Mondstadt.” Kaeya gently pushes Venti to his feet, holding his hand until the shake of the boy’s feet subsides. “All our toys have to work. Favoritism should only go so far in a world like this.”
With that, Kaeya pats Venti’s butt and sends the boy off, and you watch in a mix of awe and horror as he stumbles towards the elevator to “work.”
If it were real, you’d be mortified.
Venti was overstimulated to tears, his legs wobbling the whole time as he stumbled past you, the apples of his fair cheeks flushed a feverish red. There was saliva dripping down his chin, cum still smeared on his stomach, and the reek of sweat and sex wafting off the entirety of his stumbling, nude form.
But you comfort yourself with the knowledge that it was all just an act.
You close your eyes and hold your jacket closer to your body as the elevator releases a low ding, forcing yourself to remember the message Diluc and Kaeya left for you that filled your heart with so much hope. What happened with Venti just now looked bad, but you’re certain that it was all part of their master strategy to deceive Childe until you’re free from him.
(If there’s a sudden thump of a body hitting the ground and a low groan from behind the elevator doors as soon as they shut, you force yourself not to pay attention to it.)
“Fucking finally,” Childe mutters as soon as Venti is gone. He shuffles forward and flops down onto a couch, pulling you with him. “Listen, I don’t want to be here any more than you guys want me here. Let’s get this over with quickly, shall we?”
“Yeah, yeah,” Kaeya mumbles, using a sanitized cloth to clean his hands before slipping his usual gloves back on. Next to him, Diluc does the same. “All we need to do is fix a transportation route for the merch, right?”
“Yeah,” Childe grunts. “I already have some ideas. I own a parent company that sells furniture. If we can legally frame our transactions under the branch of…”
You zone out as soon as they begin using human trafficking jargon you barely understand.
This meeting is much more civilized than the previous, if the whole incident with Venti can be forgotten. The jabs Diluc and Kaeya make towards Childe are much more subtle, popping up rarer, too, and Childe doesn’t openly taunt them with your body the way he did in the first meeting.
It takes nearly an hour before your owner even remembers you, and even then, his touches remain somewhat innocent. He only ever ghosts his fingers against your thigh, oft going down to drum his fingers against your knee while he continues to work out the logistics of his business deal. The touches honestly end up keeping you on edge with how delicate they are, and it’s right when his fingers have finally flitted up to the innards of your thigh, right when you’re holding your breath, right when Diluc and Kaeya’s eyes are fixated on where his palm has crept beneath your skirt, that his phone rings.
Immediately, Childe’s hands are off you.
“I have to take this,” he says, wrapping a protective arm over your shoulder as he beckons you to stand next to him. “In private.”
“Take the elevator down to the second floor if you want privacy,” Diluc offers. “It’s not being rented out, and there aren’t any cameras there.”
“Thanks,” your owner says, leading you towards the elevator.
“Wait,” Kaeya calls, right as you’re about to step in behind Childe. You glance behind your shoulder to stare at him, and the devious expression on his face concerns you.
Kaeya winks at you a second before Childe, too, turns to face him.
“Leave your girl here with us, will you? Give us a treat to nibble on to kill the time.”
Immediately, you think that Kaeya has said the wrong thing. Childe is a fiercely protective man, over you more than anything else. There’s no way he’d leave you in the hands of two men he barely even likes, and it’ll probably only cast suspicion in his mind to hear Kaeya ask for you so candidly.
You shut your eyes, instinctively preparing to hear Childe’s rejection.
Instead, his tone is light when he speaks, almost amused. “Finally seeing how high-quality she is, eh?” Your owner is smiling at Kaeya, not an ounce of irritation, anger, or protectiveness on his face. “Fine. This call will take a while anyway. Just make sure you don’t wreck her too much.”
With that, the redhead steps into the elevator and leaves you with nothing more than a featherlight kiss to the temple, and you’re standing there, dumbfounded, for a full ten seconds before you process what has happened.
Alone, you realize with a start. I'm finally alone with them.
Immediately, you sprint forward, grabbing Kaeya’s hand in an attempt to tug him off the couch, not caring about how you dropped your jacket on the floor in your rush.
“Come on,” you say, eyes wide. “If—if you want to set me free, we have to go now while he’s busy!”
But Kaeya doesn’t move an inch off the couch, instead pulling you onto his lap with a strength you didn’t realize he had.
“What are you—”
“Shh, baby. We have to put on a show in case Tartaglia comes back, yeah?” You feel Diluc shuffle behind you, and the redhead is quick to wrap his hands around your hips from behind.
The slowness, the casualness, the feigned normalcy of their actions dumbfounds you.
“Why aren’t we leaving?” you whisper, hands going up to grip at the fabric of Kaeya’s suit. “You said you’d free me if I managed to come to this meeting, so—”
“Relax,” Diluc mumbles into your ear, gloved hands sliding beneath your blouse to grope at your breasts. “Freeing you isn’t something we can do at the drop of a hat. It’s not just about you being here.”
“Right,” Kaeya says, his fingers slowly undoing the zipper on your skirt. “We asked you to come to this meeting to first check if it would even be possible to free you. A test, if you will. We weren’t sure you’d pass it. But if Tartaglia is willing to give you enough freedom to wander around with him, we figure you should also have enough freedom to do what needs to be done for us to free you.”
“What?” you whisper, trying to force back the tears that are pooling in your eyes. This is everything you’d feared: that Diluc and Kaeya’s idea of freeing you would be more complicated than you’d realized and that the whole process would require more time. “What do you need me to do to be free?”
“Aw, don’t cry.” Kaeya tosses your skirt to the floor right before he goes up to wipe away the tears from your face. “It’s not hard. We just need you to get ahold of Tartaglia’s fake documents on you.”
“His...what?”
Confusion is ultimately what brings a halt to your tears, and you cock your head naively at Kaeya right as Diluc speaks up.
“Fake documents,” Diluc explains, beginning to rub the front of his pants against your naked arse. “Every human trafficker has a series of documents for their merchandise that they can use for transportation and claim purposes. We need to get yours from Tartaglia.”
“Why can’t you take me away without them?” you plead, still clinging to the hope that you might be able to go free today. “Why do I have to—”
“Because, depending on how smart Tartaglia is, he can use those documents to rightfully get you back, even if we set you free.”
“What?” you ask. “How?”
“Think. If he has you listed on those documents as a minor, then the State can only do so much to protect you. Especially if he has himself listed down as your guardian. Even if you try to speak out against him, the Snezhnayan police won’t care. They’ll send you straight back to him, and you can bet that whatever freedoms you have now will be forever lost to you the second time around.”
“B-but, if I can prove that I’m not the person in his fake documents—”
“You can’t prove that,” Kaeya interrupts. “If you’re lucky, Tartaglia’s fake documents would be low-quality. But if he was smart, which we both know he is, then his documents will be of a high-enough quality that people will believe them when they see them. And unless you happen to have your official documents on you, there’s nothing you can do to protect yourself except steal the papers from Childe before he can use them.”
The annoyed, almost bored inflection of Kaeya’s voice shakes you to the core. They rattle this information off so quickly, so intuitively, so earnestly that you have no choice but to believe them.
“Okay,” you whisper, voice shaky. “Okay, I’ll do it. I’ll get the documents you want.”
“Do you know where he keeps them?” Diluc asks.
“I think so. He has a locked briefcase that he always keeps in his office. I don’t know the combination to open it, but I should be—”
“Good,” Kaeya interrupts. “You seem like a smart girl. I’m sure you can figure it out.”
“Y-yeah,” you say, hesitant. The man’s words seemed like a compliment, but his tone felt much more derisive. “Um, is that all, or is there anything else I—”
“That’s all,” Diluc says. “Two weeks from now is when we’ll be ready to get you out of here. We’ll be staying in the hotel across from Tartaglia’s apartment. The two of us will be in rooms 213 and 214. Come find us at any time, and as long as you have the documents on you, we’ll be able to set you free.”
Your heart beats a little faster at that.
“Really?” you whisper, almost not believing it. The goal you’ve been given is finally real: it’s tangible, so clear that you can already see yourself using something sharp to tear into Childe’s briefcase and retrieve your documents before you’ll finally be able to live a life you can be proud of.
Kaeya smiles when he sees the look on your face.
“Really,” he whispers, reaching a rough, gloved hand up to cup your cheek with infinite care. The kiss he coaxes you into is gentle, soft, and sweet. It’s everything he is, everything Childe isn’t.
“Thank you,” you whisper, leaning forward to wrap the man in a hug. You don’t care about the fact that Diluc has unbuttoned and pulled off your blouse now, leaving you effectively nude as you embrace Kaeya, but he doesn’t seem to mind either. “Thank you so much.”
“You’re welcome,” the man whispers in response, and you can hear the smile in his voice.
The next minutes are marked by more peace than you’ve felt in months. Sandwiched between Diluc and Kaeya, you feel oddly safe. The roughness of their gloves stops bothering you, the silky brushes of their hair stop tickling you, and the closeness of their bodies, the warmth and the heat that radiates off them as naturally as light off the sun, only relaxes you in their arms.
When Kaeya begins playing with the jewels on your necklace, you don’t stop him.
“Tartaglia gave you this?” he asks, tugging gently at a diamond.
“Yeah. They're all presents for being good.”
You can’t help the smile that blooms on your face as you say that: it’s like a reminder that you’re special, that you’re important, that even though you’re down in a world where your life isn’t even your own, you still have worth.
Behind you, Diluc’s fingers reach over your shoulder and begin lifting up individual stones to the light. “These are expensive,” he mutters, twisting a ruby among his leathered fingers. “More expensive than what someone would normally give to a slave.”
“I know,” you say. “It's because this is supposed to incentivize my good behavior, and—”
“No,” Diluc interrupts, voice soft. “It’s supposed to manipulate you.”
Your voice catches at that, and you glance at Kaeya for confirmation because you doubt it can be true. Not when Childe always seems so sweet when he gifts you these presents. Not when you've come to look forward to them as the one light in your life in this dark, dark world. But when the blue-haired man’s face twists into sympathy, your heart falls.
“B-but...I like…”
“You’re supposed to like it,” Diluc’s voice, rich and deep, rumbles out into your ear. ”But you need to understand that it’s not a necklace, doll. It’s a collar.”
“I know that,” you say, now wrapping your fingers around the chain protectively. “But I don’t—I don’t want—”
Kaeya kisses you, bringing two hands to your cheeks to cradle your face in his fingers.
“We’re not going to take it away from you, baby.”
He kisses you again.
“Relax.”
Those words soothe you in a way you can’t quite explain; the idea of losing your necklace, even being told that your necklace was a ploy to manipulate you (though you already knew that, to some extent), was unsettling. You much prefer the notion that it’s an innocuous gift: mainly because you’ve grown far too attached to it for it to represent human trafficking and all the pain you’ve had to endure thus far.
But, right when you’ve calmed yourself and forcibly stopped yourself from panicking, you feel a sharp tug on your neck.
“What did you—”
“Nothing,” Diluc says, holding two gemstones—two diamonds, one blue and one pink—in his palm. They still have their chain attached to them, but that's it: there's nothing connecting the diamonds to your necklace, the chains having been ripped off.  You feel your expression change as you see what he's done. “Just—”
“What did you do?!” you blurt, panic beginning to overtake your heart. “Childe—Ajax—he’s going to notice! I—I’ll get in trouble, and—”
“Shh,” Kaeya whispers, trying to calm you down with a kiss, but you pull back before his lips can touch you. “It’s not—”
“Put it back. Put it back!”
You've turned around and are about to hit Diluc when the man grips both your wrists, holding you with such a force that it freezes you. The look in his eyes is fierce, fiery, red eyes shining brighter than the rubies dangling off your neck—and for a single second, you can’t help but think that the man looks furious.
Then, the expression is masked, and you’re both left calmer for it.
“Tartaglia won’t notice. Unless he makes a habit of regularly counting what’s on your neck, only you’ll be able to feel the difference.” Right. That makes sense. Childe likes to look at your necklace, but you doubt that he’ll actually know how many presents he’s gifted you. Not when he barely touches the thing, dexterous fingers always reaching out to feel your body instead.
“And besides,” Diluc says, easing you back into your earlier position with your back resting against his chest. “It’s a promise. The two diamonds.”
“A promise?”
In front of you, Kaeya smiles in understanding.
“Right. It’s a promise, baby. We’ll give you these two diamonds back once we’ve freed you, and until then, they’re our weight to bear so that every time we look at them, we remember that we’re waiting for you so we can set you free.”
“It...is?” you ask, hesitant. You haven’t been in the outside world in a while; is this how people do promises now?
“Yes,” Diluc mumbles, kissing your ear as he strokes your hair. Every brush of his fingers against your head instinctively relaxes you, until you’re almost as calm as you were before he took two stones off your necklace. “Do you trust us to return them to you?”
It’s a disguised question.
What Diluc is really asking is this: Do you trust us?
“Yes,” you breathe. It’s the only right answer.
Then, the two men go silent. They focus on relaxing you once more, running their gloved fingers up and down the sides of your body, almost massaging your skin as you sit between them.
Unfortunately for you, all you can think about is your necklace.
It’s the first time you’ve had it be lighter than before: Childe only ever adds to it; he never takes. Now, right when you’d grown used to the weight of the sapphire he attached this morning, you’ve got the odd situation of it being even lighter than it had been when you woke up.
You know that you should feel freer now: less chained down to Childe and to the Fatui.
But deep down inside, you miss the weight.
Minutes later, when you’re a little less emotionally overwhelmed and a little more relaxed as the two men gently run their arms around your body, another thought surfaces.
“A-also,” you say, hesitant. “Um, everything you said at the beginning of this meeting…”
“All lies,” Diluc says, pulling you closer against his broad chest after you slink too deep into Kaeya’s embrace. “Tartaglia had a negative impression of us coming in, so we had to play to that. Everything we said was just for show.”
Your shoulders sag in relief at that, but another thought continues to poke at your brain.
“And Venti?” you finally manage to ask, remembering how ruined the boy had looked as he stumbled away from the two men holding you.
“He’s a masochist,” Kaeya blurts. “We asked him beforehand if he’d be okay with participating. Not sure he realized how all-out we were going to go, but I’m certain that he enjoyed himself.”
That...makes sense! You’ve heard before about masochists, and looking back, everything Diluc and Kaeya did to the boy really did seem to be for the sake of his pleasure. You’ve heard countless times about overstimulation being something sexy, something desired, something liked by the select few who could bear it. Similarly, the way Diluc had his hand down Venti’s mouth...that’s the equivalent of Childe having you suck on his fingers during sex, right?
You laugh a little when you realize that everything you’d been scared about had an explanation. You should have known better than to doubt Diluc and Kaeya, two people who are saving you from hell itself. If anything, you should be on your knees thanking them instead of raising questions over what they had to say to be able to help you out.
“I’m sorry for all the questions,” you confess, sheepish as Kaeya’s fingers begin toying with your breasts. “I’m just...really nervous. And a little scared.”
“Who wouldn’t be?” Kaeya asks, a tinkling laugh spilling from his lips. “We were the same way when we first came out here to save people from human trafficking.”
“Really?” you ask, eyes round. “Do you guys do this for a living? How many people do you save?”
“Uh...whoever we can, really. We use our covers as human traffickers to identify targets that would be easiest for us to free. You seemed like one. Before you, we helped that boytoy from Zhongli. Before him was some Khaenri'ahi girl, and…”
Zhongli? You ask yourself, trying to figure out where you know that name from. It’s familiar, so familiar, and…
“Wait!” You blurt, sitting up straight and nearly knocking Diluc backward in the process. “You guys were responsible for freeing Xiao? The one who’s always by Zhongli’s side?”
You remember the short little man, beautiful in his own right, from when Childe had a business meeting with Zhongli. That was the first time you learned of Xiao, the last time being just last week when you heard Scaramouche say that the green-haired boy had somehow disappeared.
Hope blooms in your heart as soon as you realize what that disappearance was: the successful removal of one more slave from the human trafficking network, something you're next in line for.
Diluc lets out a light laugh when he sees how your entire face has brightened up now that you have genuine proof that these two men are for real, that they’ve helped people escape in the past and that they’ll help you escape in the near future.
“Wait, if you guys freed Xiao, then were you also the ones responsible for setting, uhm…”
Your brain blanks out as you try to remember the second person Scaramouche mentioned when speaking to Childe. What was her name? Amine? you think, but that sounds off. Umino? Lumina? You continue to guess names in your head, brain fixating on Childe’s interaction with the other Fatui executive until finally, you remember her name.
“Lumine!” you declare with pride. “Were you the ones who set her free, too?”
Kaeya stares at you with a shocked expression. His lips part and his face freezes, eyebrows lifted comically high on his forehead, and you turn around to glance at Diluc, but the redhead is in a similar state.
“You’re telling me,” Kaeya begins, “That Lumine...”
He can’t bring himself to finish, and so Diluc steps in to complete the question: “Lumine belonged to Tartaglia?”
You glance back and forth between the two men, unsure of why they seem to be regarding this news with such shock.
“I think so?” you say, now beginning to doubt yourself. “I’m not sure. But Scaramouche said something like that to him, so I—”
You’re cut off by a sharp cackle of laughter from Kaeya. You stare at him in shock, and then behind you, Diluc has begun chuckling, and then Kaeya’s laughing even louder, and within seconds, both men are laughing their heads off at something you barely understand.
“Oh my gods!” Kaeya blurts between fits of almost-hysterical giggles. “You’re telling me that Tartaglia? Fucking Tartaglia? Was the one to lose Lumine?” He laughs some more, loud and merry and cheerful. "So I was right when I called you a—a—" Kaeya stutters in his laughter. "A cheap replacement?"
You stare at the blue-haired man in confusion, not understanding a word of what he's saying nor why he seems to find it so hilarious that Childe and Lumine are connected. You want to open your mouth to ask why, but you have to stop yourself because it's at this precise moment that your owner returns; and this is the picture that Childe sees when the elevator dings with the announcement of his arrival: you, completely nude and squashed between the two Mondstadt business partners, Kaeya in front of you, laughing his ass off as if you’ve told the joke of the century, and Diluc behind you, the most stoic man in the room losing his composure in an equally graceless manner.
“What the fuck…” your owner mutters at the sight, but seeing Childe only makes the two men around you laugh harder.
It takes a full minute for them to calm down, and in that minute, you rise from their couch and move back towards Childe like an obedient slave, only wearing your clothes when Childe nods at you that it’s okay for you to do so.
“So,” Childe deadpans once Diluc and Kaeya have finally stopped laughing, though Kaeya still releases a giggle every now and then. “Did my girl tell a funny joke or something? You guys sounded like a bunch of dying hyenas.”
“Something like that,” Kaeya says, smiling at Childe, but you sense something deadly in his eyes.
“Alright, well…” Childe awkwardly tries to steer the conversation back to what they’d been discussing before. “I guess the final details will have to be ironed out once I actually use this company as a cover to ship the girls to you, but is there anything else we need to talk about? Transportation-wise, we seem solid.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Kaeya drawls, a strange smile on his face. “But, real quick, I want to talk about prices one more time.”
“For fuck’s sake,” Childe grunts, annoyed. “We already agreed on five-hundred thousand mora per shipment. Don’t try to haggle with me again on this.”
“Ordinarily, you’d be right,” Diluc says, crossing his arms. “But we just learned some interesting information.”
Childe’s eye twitches in annoyance. “Right,” he blurts, leaning back. “What is it? Did you find out that I’m giving a better deal to someone else? Because that sucks, but that’s how this business works with new partners. I’m not going to—”
“It’s not that,” Diluc interrupts, lifting a hand. “It’s moreso that before, we thought we were purchasing merchandise from a valued, respected dealer.”
Diluc’s lips quirk into a cruel grin.
“Not from the infamous idiot trafficker who lost Lumine.”
You can hear the ice settle over the room before you feel it, the abrupt, chilling silence suddenly making every second feel like an hour. You’re almost scared to move, scared to pull your eyes to your owner who, for the first time since you met him, looks like the child his codename was assigned for.
Childe doesn’t try to speak, but his every thought is displayed in his eyes alone, the cerulean blues giving insight to a hurricane of emotions wilder than the sea. In his eyes is fear, horror, despair, and pain, so much pain.
Something about the look on his face makes your heart break.
Diluc and Kaeya don’t care.
“I think charging five hundred thousand mora is a tad much for a douche who almost brought the entire industry down. Hell, you should be paying us for even being willing to deal with you, but…” Kaeya glances at Diluc, a single blue eye flitting down to where Diluc extends three fingers against his knee. “We’ll settle for a drop in the price instead. Three-hundred thousand mora per shipment. That good with you, Tartaglia?”
You’re expecting your owner to bargain, to argue, to scoff, to do something other than stare into the distance with those bright blue eyes that now look more blank than anything else.
When you hear Childe mutter a meek “Okay,” you nearly recoil in shock.
Even Kaeya is surprised. “R-really? Damn. Actually, I think we should go even lower, y’know? Every trafficker in the world was scared for their life because of you, so maybe drop the price some more as reparations for that? Whaddya say, two hundred thousand? Per shipment?”
You stare at your owner, silently begging him to do something. Even you can tell that he’s being taken advantage of now, and that awful look in his eyes is something that even you’re unfamiliar with.
“Okay.”
“Fu...okay then? But also, you were kind of a dick to us last time, so how about you make it one hundred thousand? Seems more fair to me.”
“O—”
You grab your owner’s hand before he can agree, and the touch seems to snap Childe out of the awful fog that had been wrapped around his head. The look in his eyes is only less marginally troubled when he abruptly stands up, gripping your hand in a silent plea for you to move with him.
“I’m going,” Childe announces.
He begins walking away so fast that you just barely have time to grab your jacket before you’re at his heels.
The man completely ignores Diluc and Kaeya as he waits for the elevator to open with a rigid posture, seeming to feel uncomfortable or fearful or panicked or a mix of all three. Kaeya begins laughing behind you both, and you almost want to tell him to stop: tell him that yes, Childe is an awful human trafficker and yes, you hate him as well—but the poor man looks like he’s on the verge of having a panic attack, and you know first-hand how awful a feeling that is.
You’re grateful when the elevator finally opens, more grateful when the doors close and you and Childe are finally in isolation together.
Only then, in the silence of the box as it moves you both down to the ground floor, do you hear Childe’s shaky breathing. It’s jagged, uneven. Then, you take note of the way his hands are clenched into fists, palms enclosed so tight that his arms are shaking—and despite everything he’s done to you, you feel some semblance of pity for him.
“Ajax,” you mumble, hoping that the name will calm him. “Relax.”
A moment of silence.
“I am relaxed,” he responds, and when you glance over at him, he’s completely back to normal: breathing even and palms loose.
His eyes, though, are just as pained as when the two of you were sitting upstairs on that couch.
“I’m sorry,” you say. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that you’re the one who let it slip that Lumine and Childe were connected. Even if you don’t understand the scope of what you said, it's clear that it had an impact. “I didn’t—”
“It’s not your fault, Childe says, not looking at you. “Don’t apologize.”
More silence. It feels heavy, unlike the usual, comfortable stretches of quiet that you and Childe like to bask in.
“What...were they talking about?” you ask quietly, still staring at your owner. “Diluc and Kaeya said that—”
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
A moment of silence.
It feels so heavy that it seems to crush you under its weight.
“Who is she? Lumine?”
More silence.
This time, Childe is the one to break it.
“The only girl I ever loved before you.”
That’s a lie, and you know it. If Childe loved you, he wouldn’t be bringing you around to meetings, dressing you like a cheap slave, and handing you off to other men to flex how ‘high-quality’ you are. If Childe loved you, you would be long gone from the human trafficking circuit because he would have set you free. If Childe loved you, he wouldn’t force you to stay by his side because he’s your abuser, your trafficker, the monster that haunts your life.
Most importantly, if Childe loved you, he would have given you a proper answer to your question. Not some flimsy skirt-around that only furthers his attempts to manipulate you into loving him back.
Your eyebrows furrow the slightest as you feel the elevator hit the ground floor, brain still focused on everything Diluc and Kaeya said. Everything Childe didn’t want to talk about. Lumine.
Curiosity begs you to stick around and learn the truth.
Logic, reasoning, and the desire to lead a life of your own tell you that you’ll be long gone from Snezhnaya before that’ll ever happen.

the JGY amnesia Fic
[AN: Someday I will come up with decent titles for my fics... but not now XD I hope you like this fic, the premise is that the issue with XY and NMJ happens before JZX’s death, and so the argument and the stairs moves up in the timeline! And JGY hits his head and gets TV-show amnesia, and remembers no one, not even himself, but is otherwise his sharp, suspicious self...]
He wakes up sure that he is dying, nothing else could hurt so sharp, agonizing pain radiating out from the back of his head, stabbing sharply every time he is swung, and he forces his eyes open. The light burns, but he can make out an earth green and brown collar, and a strong jawline. He is being carried by this man.
He doesn’t know who this is, but he feels… safe. Even though every step this man takes makes his eyes water.
He blacks out.
*
His name is Jin Guangyao. It rolls smoothly off his tongue, but sits wrongly in his mind. “Temporary amnesia,” the doctor had informed him, when Jin Guangyao could not tell him the answers to any pf his questions; not his name, or the date, or where they were.
A fancy young master in white-and-gold robes, who introduces himself as Jin Zixuan, is the one who sits by his side and tells Jin Guangyao the basics of his life. There is such an obvious lack of detail that it leaves him intrigued. And Jin Zixuan looks ashamed when Jin Guangyao asked if he was Jin Zixuan’s uncle. “No, I’m your older brother,” he says. “We… we share a birthday, but you’re a day younger.”
Jin Guangyao watches him for a moment, and wonders at the source of his brother’s shame. “I’m a bastard, aren’t I?” he asks.
“My father legitimized you!” Jin Zixuan protests. “You’re my brother.”
Jin Guangyao smiles at him. This man is clearly naïve, but has no ill-intent. The man who had named Jin Guangyao Jin Guangyao, however? He is yet to ascertain that.
*
Jin Guangyao’s memory doesn’t return within the first week. With his head injury healed, though, he’s allowed to leave the infirmary which allows him to collect a lot more useful data.
There is a lot of work piled up in his room. Disorganized, as if someone had gone through it to take the important paperwork to work on while he is <infirm>. That he was assigned so much work that was non-essential makes him wonder if he was actually pretty low on the social ladder, here. He goes through all of them anyway, most of it is useful information, painting a picture of Jin sect’s activities, and the sorts of projects that they allow to drag on for weeks. Jin Guangyao has left meticulous notes in a separate notebook about how to put everything into a more sensible order. That such reworking was required
His accessories, or lack-there-of, are even more enlightening. There’s also a scholarly-sort of hat, and only a few cheap hair ribbons. Nothing at all like the intricate jade hairpins or crowns with intricate metalwork and precious stones that Jin Zixuan and Jin Zixun wore daily.
Jin Guangyao’s place here is… obvious.
He wonders who the man who had picked him up after his injury, was. No one tells him, not even Jin Zixuan, he just pats Jin Guangyao’s hand and says, “Don’t worry, you’re safe now.” The implications of that are obvious, of course, that the stranger was the one who had hurt him. And yet it’s a subject no one speaks of, of how Jin Guangyao had fallen down the thousand steps of Koi Tower, and he hadn’t asked after the first two times. He stays wary, watching everyone. Someone had tried to kill him, and he doesn’t even remember which of his acquaintances might want him dead.
*
Lan Xichen arrives two days after his release from the infirmary, Lan-Zongzhu, according to everyone else. He’s beautiful, the most beautiful person that Jin Guangyao has ever seen. Since he remembers all of a week, this doesn’t sound like a compliment, but Jin Guangyao could probably search for decades and not find anyone more beautiful. It would not be fair.
They have tea together, after Lan Xichen – “Call me er-ge, you are my sworn brother, A-Yao,” – has checked him over worriedly, and checked his meridians, and pressed his fingertips gently to the back of Jin Guangyao’s head, to where his head injury had been, and ascertained that he truly is well.
“They did not tell me you were injured,” he says. “Da-ge had to, and this is the week of new students for the summer lectures, I could not leave. Jin Zixuan promised me you were well, though,” he says. Sincerity shines through him, and Jin Guangyao wonders what on earth he, an unwelcome child in his own family, could have done to make this man care for him.
So he asks.
Lan Xichen describes a heroic young man, who gave him shelter when he needed it most, who had smiled and laughed at him, and helped him with chores he could not do, and gave him the strength to fight a war. Lan Xichen tells him that this kind young man had gone into a war that did not affect him, only to help, that he had turned spy against a raging mad man, and finally taken off his head.
“So that is why my father took me in,” says Jin Guangyao. There’s a flicker of pain on Lan Xichen’s face as Jin Guangyao tells him what he’s surmised about how he’s treated here. “Did you know?” asks Jin Guangyao.
“I suspected,” Lan Xichen says softly. “But you were too proud to tell me. You insisted you were happy here. I visited when I could, but I never… I’m so sorry.”
Jin Guangyao reaches out to pat Lan Xichen’s hand, it feels so familiar, even if Jin Guangyao can’t remember doing it before. He must have, Lan Xichen’s sad face cannot be borne. “I’m sure I didn’t want to bother you, er-ge. You’re overworking yourself even now.” The signs are there, even behind his flawless composure. “You look so tired.”
“I had to come,” says Lan Xichen. “I was so scared that you…” He trails off, then turns his hand, holding onto him tightly. “If you don’t remember your place at Koi tower, do you want to return with me until your memory recovers? We’re still reconstructing, but Cloud Rececsses is still an excellent place to ”
“This Jin Guangyao is honoured, but what if it doesn’t?” asks Jin Guangyao practically. “I can’t just leave my home like that.” More quietly, he adds, “There must have been some reason I didn’t leave before.”
“You never said, exactly, but I believe it was because of your mother,” says Lan Xichen. “She wished that you would gain your father’s recognition, and a place at Koi Tower.”
“Do you know anything about her?” Jin Guangyao is not an idiot, he knows from the snide remarks, the way that people try not to touch him that he is of low birth, that his mother’s occupation was. That. He wonders if Lan Xichen will lie to him.
“She was an educated woman,” he says. “A renowned beauty. You’ve told me that you take after her, in many ways. She was skilled in the arts. She never taught you art but she was your master in calligraphy and music. She loved you very much and wanted you to have a good education because she knew… she knew that A-Yao is so incredibly smart and destined for greater things.” He squeezes Jin Guangyao’s hand. “Her life was not easy. She suffered, but she loved you. She would be proud of you, to know how much you achieved.”
It should matter, it does matter, Jin Guangyao’s heart squeezes, but it is from sympathy for what Lan Xichen is feeling. The dark honey-gold eyes are bright with tears. Clearly Jin Guangyao had loved her very much, before. But Jin Guangyao cannot find in him any love for a woman that Jin Guangyao cannot imagine. A woman with his face, a prostitute, but educated, talented. And ambitious to have Jin Guangshan’s son.
“My father did not take her in, I gather?”
“He did not. She died of illness shortly before I met you.”
“Thank you for telling me,” says Jin Guangyao.
*
Lan Xichen stays an entire afternoon, and readies himself to leave at dusk. Jin Guangyao accompanies him to the sky-pavilion on Koi Tower that the Jin disciples use to take off from.
There’s a last nagging question that Jin Guangyao hadn’t managed to slide into the conversation, as it meandered into cultivation theory and Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen had tried to piece out some kind of pattern in what kinds of cultivation knowledge he had retained, and what he had forgotten. It had been an interesting exercise.
“Er-ge, before you go,” says Jin Guangyao. He looks around cautiously, but no one is near enough to overhear. “You’re older than Jin Zixuan, aren’t you?” he asks, and Lan Xichen nods. “So our da-ge… you never said. Is he… did he die during the war?”
“No!” cries Lan Xichen. “A-Yao no, he’s not. He’s fine, he just could not find time to visit.”
Lie.
It’s the first time Lan Xichen has lied to him today, but Jin Guangyao is certain of it.
“No one talks about him, and I couldn’t find any letters from him. I did find a few of yours. No one even says his name. Who is he?”
“Nie Mingjue,” says Lan Xichen, sounding defeated. “Of course you would think to ask, but his name is Nie Mingjue.”
Everything falls into place. Jin Guangyao has seen some Nie disciple couriers on their way to private meetings with his father and the Jin council of elders. Hard faced and angry looking, they kept to themselves and departed the moment they could, without staying for a meal or entertainment.
“You think he pushed me down the stairs,” says Jin Guangyao.
“No,” says Lan Xichen. “We know he did. He kicked you down the stairs. He–”
“And you believe that?” asks Jin Guangyao.
“Of course I do,” says Lan Xichen. “Da-ge was the one who told me. I knew that things were difficult between the two of you, recently, but I had not imagined… It does not matter, we are looking through the records now, so that you can be free of your vows to him, and even if we can’t find something, he won’t visit Koi Tower again, Jin-zongzhu has forbidden it.”
“Oh,” says Jin Guangyao, mind whirring. “Okay then.”
“Is A-Yao afraid we’re covering something up?” asks Lan Xichen. Jin Guangyao is not sure what gave it away, he thought he’d kept his face smooth.
“Naturally I trust er-ge,” he says, smiling up at him. “I just remember him, vaguely. He picked me up. He saved me.”
It’s Jin Guangyao’s first memory, pained and fragmented though it is.
“He did take you up to the infirmary right after,” Lan Xichen agrees. He looks faintly puzzled, like he’s not sure why that matters to Jin Guangyao.
“I understand,” says Jin Guangyao. “Nie-zongzhu would of course regret his action after his moment of anger.”
“He does,” Lan Xichen assures him. “You should write to him, if you are willing to accept his apologies, but Da-ge is terribly sorry.”
“Thank you er-ge, I will,” Jin Guangyao promises. The relief on Lan Xichen’s face is too pure for this world.
He waves goodbye after Lan Xichen takes off, and steps back into the maze of Koi Tower, mulling over all the new knowledge that Lan Xichen had brought with him. He was right, he should write to Nie Mingjue.
But after some more research.
What could they have possibly quarrelled about so badly?
Jin Guangyao makes his way back to his rooms, keeping his face expressionless at the gilded opulence and overt unfriendliness of his home. He doesn’t understand his past self at all.
Why does he still live here, where he’s so clearly unwanted?
Why did he even care for the acknowledgement of Jin Guangshan, who from even just Jin Guangyao’s few interactions this week and the gossip he’s picked up, is a selfish, disgusting pervert who wouldn’t spit on Jin Guangyao if he was on fire.
Just because his mother wanted him to?
She was a good woman, he hears again, in Lan Xichen’s sincere voice. But Jin Guangyao doesn’t get it. She had to have been a fool, to believe in Jin Guangshan, or terribly cold and cruel to send him to Jin Guangshan knowing exactly what kind of derision would await him here. He is a war hero, and yet he’s treated like a servant.
Jin Guangyao is in the mood to be charitable, so he picks the former.
He still doesn’t know why he stayed.

sunrise - ransom drysdale smut
The one where Ransom doesn’t care who sees you fucking
warnings: this is dubcon bordering on noncon, so please beware, public sex, office environment, kind of humiliation based on those two other things, jealous!Ransom, probably degrading names at least in thought, smut (p in v), crying during sex
Tumblr media
Y/N’s P.O.V.
I knew he was pissed, I just never imagined he’d be this pissed. Not pissed enough to invite me to his work, urge me to disturb the meeting he had planned for weeks, force me to bend over the table and take me right then and there.
“See this? You guys see this face? This is mine, just like this pussy. No one else can make her look this fucked out. No one else can fuck her like this. No one. Tell them, baby.” And then he pulled me up by my hair, forcing me to stand up while still getting impaled by his dick.
“No one…” I gasped, instinctively moving my hips back in an effort to keep getting some more of that delicious friction that was driving me mad. “No one else can touch me, Ransom. Just you.” And just to make the whole scene even more debauched, and because slowly wasn’t something Ransom could do, he tore off the front of my blouse with one hand, exposing my breasts for his colleagues to see.
“That’s right, sweetheart. No one else can have you. You’re mine.” A choked out sound escaped me as his warm mouth closed around my earlobe. All around the room, I could see their eyes on us, drinking me in, taking advantage of this opportunity of having my naked body exposed since they knew - now they knew - they would never have me.
So much for keeping our relationship a secret. So much for reminding Ransom again and again that I might be his in the bedroom, but in this building, I was the boss. Here I was, submissive personality exposed as Ransom’s cock drilled me again and again, making sure to engrave this moment in every single man’s mind,  so they’d never forget who truly owned me.
“Now tell them how good it feels, baby girl. Describe exactly how having my huge cock fucking you has ruined you for anyone else. I want to make sure they won’t joke about getting you in their beds anymore.”
Oh, yes. The reason that has brought me to this specific position. The fact that boys had to be boys and talk during their lunch break about how much they’d like to have me on my knees for them. Ransom assured me that he wasn’t jealous, but I should have known better. I had seen the way that the veins on his neck and forehead had pulsed when he recounted the story. I had suffered through the release of his frustrations as he tied me to the bed and fucked me until I passed out. Still, stupidly, I had believed that would be the end of it. And now, I paid the price for my own stupidity.
“Tell them,” Ransom ordered, a quick slap over my pussy making me scream in frustration, in desperate need of a release. I scrambled to try to find my own voice, knowing it’d come out hoarse and whiny and in a tone no other man in the room except for my boyfriend had ever heard coming from me.
“I-It feels so good, sir.” I didn’t have to see him to know that Ransom was sporting the cockiest of grins at the appearance of the nickname he forced me to address him with. The lines between here, where I was “ma’am”, and our bed, where he was in charge, had officially been blurred. “I-I’ll never want another cock again. You have ruined me for everyone else.”
“Damn right I did.” A particularly harsh thrust against my cervix had me cumming loudly around Ransom’s cock, and I could hear from the depths of my own mind the river of expletives that he was spilling in an effort to control himself. “I bet you all thought she was this innocent little thing, huh?”
It took me a while to be able to focus on the sound of his voice again, instead of the overpowering thunder of my heartbeat and the filthy noises that our debauchered activities produced. When I did, it still took me some time to comprehend that his attention had moved to the company we had in the room, the captivated audience that still hadn’t seemed able to divert their gaze from the live porn happening before them.
“Or maybe you thought she’d be bossy even in bed. What a fucking disappointment, huh? Knowing that she’s just a little cockwhore for the guy that works in the reviewing department. That’s all you are, isn’t it, kitten? My personal whore.”
“Y-yes.” He didn’t need to remind me to answer this time. I craved his approval, I desperately needed the sweet rewards that he oh-so-graciously granted me when he considered that I was being his good girl.
And I knew that he was pleased with my instinctual need to please him, because a hand found its way between my legs, caressing the spot precisely above where he met me. “That’s my good girl,” he acknowledged, and I melted in his embrace, trembling in his arms at the second crescendo that promised to overthrow me.
“What? Does that feel good?” He knew it did. He knew. So it wasn’t that bad that I wasn’t able to find my own voice then, and answered only in whimpers and moans. He didn’t mind. Instead, I heard and felt the rumble of his laughter as he kept his punishing thrusts while still rubbing my needy pussy.
“C’mon, baby. I know you can do better than that. Really show them how I make you feel. Scream for me.” And scream I did, right as another wave of suffocating pleasure managed to drown me, my body falling slump over the table as the last of my energy was drained. Behind me, all Ransom gave me as a response was a dark chuckle, that paired with the feeling of his hand running down my back until it met my ass had me shivering against the cold wood.
Ransom’s P.O.V.
“You turn them on without even intending to…” I was simply voicing my own thoughts now, carefully taking inventory of every inch of precious skin available to me and only me, while I knew every single man in this room desired to be in my spot. “I bet they want to join us, sweetheart. I bet they’d give anything to be the ones thrusting their miniscule cocks into this sopping tight pussy. I mean, look around…” Gathering her hair on my fist, I forced her to raise her gaze to see her subordinates, some already blatantly touching themselves to the sight in front of them. “They can’t tear their eyes away from you. They want you so badly.”
Raising her to give a quick kiss to her wet cheek, I managed to catch a tear before I pushed her down against the table once more. My little cockslut, always so desperate for my cock, couldn’t even stop rocking her hips back instinctively to meet mine, even despite the state of overstimulation she certainly found herself in by now.
“And all you want is me, isn’t that right, kitten? No one else can make you feel this good, no one.” The pure, unadulterated power that I felt coursing through my veins as I fucked her in front of every single one of my colleagues was finally catching up to me, and I hissed as I felt myself about to spill inside of her.
“I’m going to breed you, baby. Right here, in front of everyone.” She whined as I felt the overwhelming rush of owning her on such a deep level, pulling her up and keeping most of her weight on me so I could nuzzle her neck while we gathered our breaths.
“See what you do to me?” I whispered, hands slowly caressing her exposed breasts while I made sure all of my cum was kept inside of her. “You make me lose all of my senses, sweetheart.” I knew I’d never hear the end of it later, but honestly, it wasn’t like she gave me much of a choice, with that idiotic decision of keeping our relationship a secret.
Now, this would never be a problem anymore.
I was awakened from my thoughts about our future as I felt her try to curl in on herself, hide her body from the still-there prying eyes. Her hands came up to cover her face and I had to laugh as I realized she could probably start crying anytime.
“There’s no reason to be shy now, kitten,” I admonished, pulling her hands from her face and keeping them behind her back so I could nip on her jawline. “There’s nothing left to hide. Now they know.”

Chapter 319 AU (yes I'm fuckin going there) where Class 1-A knows their nerd really well.
They know that Izuku probably won't be willing to come back on his own, so their great plan to get him back is to:
Step One: Have Bakugou and undetermined number of other necessary people to distract Izuku.
Step Two: Have Uraraka float up behind him and smack him with a bat to knock him out (it has to be Uraraka because she's his closest friend and won't trigger danger sense, and Bakugou's already on Mido distracting duty).
I just like the idea of all the tangential pro heroes being like "We don't know how to get this kid to slow down a little and maybe take some self care" while class 1-a strolls up with a baseball bat and is like "I got this"
Yes my brain does feel like it's on crack, no I'm not actually on crack.

GOBLINN I NEEDED THIS!!!
fuck here i am again, answering ur beautiful au dumps late </3
ok but
Tumblr media
ch 321 better go down like this bc my poor son is in need of so many hugs, support, love, and showers. he needs to be brought home asap.
hopefully uraraka knocking midoriya out wouldn’t count as a danger so that danger sense wouldn’t activate djekdnms
ok so read this w the knowledge that we’re gonna have to slide out of canon:
we don’t know how they knew ofa’s quirks (unless all might told them), but they really worked around it.
bakugou knows how midoriya works so he was able to deduce that midoriya would use smokescreen against them then activate full cowl to escape while the rest are still reeling from the clouds of smoke.
imagine momo making them masks to combat it, allowing them to maneuver around the smoke.
without midoriya knowing, both bakugou’s silent explosions and the miasma of todoroki heating and cooling up quickly is helping with the thickening of the smoke. midoriya used it to cloak himself? well too bad because bakugou took the idea and used it against him.
since the cloud is so thick and everyone’s buzzing around midoriya, actively keeping him inside the gathered smoke to cage him, midoriya’s senses are running haywire. there are too many offences coming at him in all sides that he can’t even detect where the next one would be. of course danger sense is still muted because he’s really not in trouble so midoriya kind of allows the buzzing of his classmates to fill him up before he retaliates.
he never gets the chance to do so because the next one that headed towards him came from above and when they crashed down, midoriya felt a pulsing at his head before his eyes inevitably closed.
uraraka floated from above midoriya and with the help of dark shadow, she was flung to his direction so fast that midoriya wasn’t able to detect what’s going on. that’s how she was able to knock him out, using the special move she learned from gunhead’s dojo, and caught midoriya on her arms.
“package secured,” she says to her comms and the rest stop moving, bakugou and todoroki stopped creating smoke, and momo’s blower machine helped clear the rest. sero taped midoriya and dark shadow cocooned him in his ragnarok shadow blanket. momo made him a blanket and shoji picked him up to carry him like he did back during the training camp. dark shadow had to let go but he kept watch from over shoji and their precious package.
that’s how the UA staff saw them when the arrived to pick up the kids. inko was waiting by recovery girl’s side in UA and so they quickly drove back there.
in UA’s ward, the teachers discussed ways to contain midoriya just so he rests and doesn’t slip away from their radar completely.
they concluded the meeting with one plan: all of 1a will never leave his side until he’s cleared.
they don’t know if it’ll work.
(but it will because when midoriya opened his eyes, he saw his friends, his family, cuddle piling him with him at the centre. he felt their warm embrace and their love and protection and cried silently. he missed this so he won’t leave just yet.)
(bakugou was awake, watching midoriya eye them. he knew that as much as they stopped midoriya now, it won’t last long. good thing that their retrieval plan included five steps and they only enacted on step one. step two would include a very worried but energetic hatsume mei.)

Heal my soul
Jiang Cheng is shaking so hard he is afraid he’ll fall clean off his sword, but he pushes on regardless, Nie Huaisang’s letter clenched in his hand.
It speaks of horrible things; qi deviations and damage so great that Nie Mingjue had to be put into a preserving coma, giving them time to assess the damage and decide if it was too great to heal or not.
Jiang Cheng grits his jaw when he remembers that passage. There is no damage that is too great to heal, especially not when it comes to his husband.
Jiang Cheng makes the fly to the Unclean Realm in record time, feeling faint and shaky once he steps off his sword and he isn’t entirely sure if it is because of his worry for Nie Mingjue or because he thoroughly exhausted himself.
It doesn’t matter either way; he is here and he will see his husband now.
“Wanyin,” Nie Huaisang wails as soon as he sees him and throws himself into Jiang Cheng’s arms.
Jiang Cheng is stunned, but he dutifully catches Nie Huaisang and then he holds him close for a moment.
“How is he?” he asks, voice low and Nie Huaisang’s sob is all the answer he needs.
Jiang Cheng’s heart sinks in his chest, but he tries to remind himself that Nie Mingjue isn’t dead; as long as he’s not dead, Jiang Cheng will be able to do something for him.
“Come,” Nie Huaisang eventually says and drags Jiang Cheng off to see Nie Mingjue. He was put on a bed, laying still and pale as Jiang Cheng has ever seen him and even though they haven’t been husbands long—barely longer than half a year at this point—Jiang Cheng knows enough to know that this is not natural.
Nie Mingjue never is this still.
“Mingjue,” Jiang Cheng breathes out and rushes to his side where he takes Nie Mingjue’s hand in his.
He immediately checks his meridians and he jerks back when he sees the damage the qi deviation did to his system.
“Mingjue,” Jiang Cheng chokes out, horrified to see just how he has been hurt, but also filled with a strange feeling of pride, because anyone else would have succumbed to these injuries a long time ago.
That Nie Mingjue is still alive—that his people were able to put him into this preserving sleep at all—speaks to a strength Jiang Cheng didn’t think possible.
“How is it?” Nie Huaisang quietly asks him and Jiang Cheng lets out a harsh breath.
“I need to take him with me,” he says, carefully putting Nie Mingjue’s hand back onto the bed.
“What? No!” Nie Huaisang immediately says, and he flicks open his fan in a nervous gesture. “You can’t take da-ge,” he says again, more vehemently and Jiang Cheng levels him with a look.
“This is why you chose me as his spouse,” he lowly says, trying not to let that thought hurt him more than it already does. “To heal him. So let me.”
“Jiang-xiong,” Nie Huaisang starts, but Jiang Cheng is not interested in hearing what he has to say for himself.
He knows damn well that the rumoured healing abilities of the Yunmeng Jiang are the only reason he even came up as a spouse and since this is all Nie Mingjue will ever want from him, he will damn well do his job.
“Huaisang, he comes with me,” Jiang Cheng says again, channelling his Sect Leader authority, and Nie Huaisang stills behind his fan.
“You came alone.”
“So prepare a carriage for us. You can even send that right hand man of his to keep an eye on me if it makes you feel better. I’ll accommodate him, too,” Jiang Cheng says and he feels sick that he even has to bargain with Nie Huaisang like that.
Nie Mingjue’s life is on the line; there shouldn’t even be a question that they have to do everything they can to save him.
“It’s not—will he survive the travel?” Nie Huaisang asks, his voice small and low and Jiang Cheng realizes that it’s just the worry for his brother that makes him unreasonable.
“Yes,” Jiang Cheng gives back, because he will make sure that Nie Mingjue does.
“Okay,” Nie Huaisang whispers and immediately leaves the room, presumably to make the necessary arrangements.
Jiang Cheng takes the opportunity to sit on Nie Mingjue’s bed again. He takes his hand back up and presses the back of it against his forehead, breaths deliberately deep and steady.
“Don’t do this to me,” Jiang Cheng whispers. “We didn’t even have our one year anniversary yet,” he goes on, even though he knows that this was always a possibility.
Nie Mingjue made no secret out of this; made no secret out of the fact that Jiang Cheng would be a very young widower.
Well, he clearly didn’t count on Jiang Cheng’s stubbornness.
The journey back to Lotus Pier is uneventful, though it drags on and on since they can’t rush it with their precious cargo.
Nie Zonghui keeps looking at Jiang Cheng as if he expects to make a move against Nie Mingjue at any moment now, and if Jiang Cheng wasn’t so worried, if he wasn’t so glad that Nie Mingjue had good people by his side like this, then he’d be pretty damn angry with even the implication that he would harm Nie Mingjue.
He’s not the one who married out of convenience after all.
When they finally reach Lotus Pier, Jiang Cheng immediately brings Nie Mingjue into the special healing chamber his family used.
Jiang Cheng debated not rebuilding it with the rest of Lotus Pier at first, because mostly his mother used it whenever she suffered a qi deviation, and Jiang Cheng surprisingly isn’t prone to them himself. But in the end he decided to simply rebuild Lotus Pier as he used to know it; who knew when the chamber would come in handy.
And he is glad for it now, because it means that Nie Mingjue even has a fighting chance of recovering from this.
Jiang Cheng activates the healing array carved into the chamber and once he kicked everyone else out, he immediately goes to work.
He knows how to repair the damage done to Nie Mingjue’s meridians but it will take time; it will take a lot of time, Jiang Cheng realizes once he finished his first thorough examination of Nie Mingjue. The damage is almost irreversible and it will take weeks—if not months—to heal him.
But Jiang Cheng is up for that; there isn’t a thing he won’t do for those he loves and if it means he practically has to live in the chamber as well, then he will do it.
Except, of course, that isn’t how it goes because Jin Ling is still there, and he still needs his jiu-jiu more than anyone else, so of course Jiang Cheng can’t live in the chamber.
His Sect still needs guidance as well, even though they are pretty self-sufficient, and so Jiang Cheng limits himself to two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening by Nie Mingjue’s side. He squeezes in an hour during lunch as well whenever he can manage, but he isn’t happy with it at all.
It will take forever this way, and Jiang Cheng doesn’t want Nie Mingjue to suffer more than he really has to. But he doesn’t trust anyone else with healing Nie Mingjue either, and so he grits his teeth and continues with his job.
It is only weeks in, that Jiang Cheng realizes that the qi deviation doesn’t have natural causes.
“What the fuck,” he mumbles as he brushed his qi over the same spot again and again, until he can coax the imprint of a song and some lingering residual qi out of Nie Mingjue’s body.
Jiang Cheng isn’t familiar with the qi, but he knows that there are only two people playing music for Nie Mingjue to help with the qi deviations and he feels hot rage bubble up inside of him when he realizes that one of Nie Mingjue’s sworn brothers must have done it. Or maybe even both.
Zidian sparks on his hand with that realisation and Jiang Cheng quickly removes his hand from Nie Mingjue, unwilling to hurt him even on accident.
But Jiang Cheng can’t be sure, because he doesn’t recognize the qi and so he calls for Nie Zonghui.
“What is it?” Nie Zonghui asks once he is inside the chamber and Jiang Cheng can see the worry clear on his face.
“Come here,” he orders and then he guides Nie Zonghui through the process that led him to uncover this.
“Do you recognize the qi?” he asks him once he is sure that Nie Zonghui understands the implications of what they just found but Nie Zonghui shakes his head.
“No, I don’t. Neither Zewu-jun nor Lianfang-zun allow people to sit in when they play for Mingjue. I always thought it was because they feared he would be distracted, but—”
“Maybe not,” Jiang Cheng finishes weakly and then he shakes his head.
“Who would know?”
“Huaisang,” Nie Zonghui says and Jiang Cheng’s brow raises with the familiar address until Nie Zonghui blushes faintly.
“I’ll write him,” Jiang Cheng finally says, unwilling to embarrassed Nie Zonghui any further and he leaves Nie Mingjue in the capable hands of his most trusted man.
Nie Huaisang arrives in Lotus Pier a few days later, the urgency of the letter clearly not lost on him.
“What is going on?” he demands to know and Jiang Cheng leads him into the healing chamber without further explanation.
He guides Nie Huaisang through the same things he showed Nie Zonghui and when they reach the lingering qi, Nie Huaisang’s face darkens.
“San-ge,” he whispers and Jiang Cheng is filled with so much rage that his entire vision goes red.
Zidian sparks on his hand but Jiang Cheng forces himself to calm down. Jin Guangyao isn’t here; there’s no need to lose control like this.
“How do you even know something like this?” Nie Huaisang asks and while the attempt at a distraction is painfully obvious, it’s also painfully effective.
“My mother got qi deviations,” Jiang Cheng tells him, aiming for calm, but probably missing by a mile. “I was tasked with healing her, and the qi deviations weren’t always of a natural course. Not all of them stemmed from her temper; sometimes the faint imprint of my father’s uncaring words would linger behind in her meridians,” Jiang Cheng admits and speaking of his family like this doesn’t hurt as much as it probably should have.
“I’m sorry,” Nie Huaisang whispers and Jiang Cheng awkwardly shrugs.
“It’s in the past.”
They sit in silence for a moment, before Nie Zonghui knocks to announce his arrival.
“Zewu-jun and Lianfang-zun are here to see Mingjue,” he tells them and the rage rises in Jiang Cheng as if it never left in the first place.
“I will deal with them,” Nie Huaisang quickly says, eying the sparking Zidian with worry and Jiang Cheng reaches out for his sleeve.
“I want him dead,” Jiang Cheng says, because this is the only thing he can think right now.
Jin Guangyao is the reason Jiang Cheng almost became a widower; he is the reason Nie Huaisang has to lead a Sect he was never meant to lead. Jiang Cheng wants him to pay for that.
“I don’t care how you do it, but I want him dead.”
Nie Huaisang flicks his fan open to hide his calculating look but Jiang Cheng knows him better than that. They spent a year studying together and he has watched how effortlessly Nie Huaisang took over as Sect Leader.
He is by far not as innocent as he seems.
“He will be,” is all Nie Huaisang eventually says and then he leaves Jiang Cheng and Nie Mingjue behind.
Jiang Cheng is definitely looking forward to Jin Guangyao’s eventual demise.
~*~*~
“Jiu-jiu, why are you always in that one room?” Jin Ling asks him one day during lunch and Jiang Cheng figures that he should maybe tell his nephew that his husband is in there.
“I will show you,” he promises him and Jin Ling immediately bounces in his seat with excitement.
He does take Jin Ling there after lunch, but before they enter the chamber he stops him with a hand to his shoulder.
“Nie Mingjue is in there,” he explains and Jin Ling hangs on to his every word with big eyes. “He’s my husband, even though you might not really remember that. He’s been hurt and he is sleeping for now. You have to be quiet and careful with him,” Jiang Cheng instructs Jin Ling, who immediately calms down.
“I remember that,” Jin Ling says, clearly proud of himself for that and Jiang Cheng smiles slightly.
Jin Ling just turned five so while he might remember that Jiang Cheng is married, Jiang Cheng is sure that he doesn’t understand quite just what being married means.
“Good boy,” he still praises Jin Ling and then he pushes the door open to reveal Nie Mingjue, who is still sleeping but looking better by the day.
“He’s so huge,” Jin Ling whispers and then slaps a hand over his mouth, carefully looking up at Jiang Cheng.
“He is,” he agrees with a slight smile and imagines how imposing Nie Mingjue must look to someone as small as Jin Ling.
“Why is he sleeping in here?” Jin Ling asks and Jiang Cheng picks him up to settle him on his lap as he sits down next to Nie Mingjue.
“Because he is hurt and this chamber helps him heal,” Jiang Cheng explains and he goes a little bit misty eyed when Jin Ling reaches out to pet Nie Mingjue’s hand.
“Yifu has to wake up soon,” he whispers, deliberately keeping his eyes on Nie Mingjue. “Jiu-jiu has been sad without you.”
“A-Ling,” Jiang Cheng breathes out and presses Jin Ling closer to his chest, pressing a kiss to his head.
“Jiu-jiu, too strong,” Jin Ling complaints and Jiang Cheng immediately loosens his arms, but he doesn’t let him go completely, and Jin Ling doesn’t wriggle out of his embrace.
“Listen, you have to talk to him,” Jin Ling suddenly says and looks up at Jiang Cheng. “He’s just laying there, it’s so boring! You have to tell him about your day!”
Jiang Cheng chuckles slightly, because even though it’s a healing sleep and Nie Mingjue is unlikely to hear anything that is being said to him, that’s exactly what Jiang Cheng has been doing for a while now.
“Why don’t you tell him something, for a change? I’m sure he’s tired of hearing my voice by now,” Jiang Cheng gently encourages Jin Ling who pouts up at him.
“Not true, jiu-jiu’s voice is the best,” Jin Ling declares, but then he does dive right into a recollection of his past week at Lotus Pier.
Jiang Cheng knows most of it already, of course, but he’s happy to stay and listen to Jin Ling blabber away.
He tries not to think about the fact that being with the two people he loves the most is strangely comforting, because Nie Mingjue is still unconscious and hurt after all, but it’s exactly what he’s thinking about.
Jiang Cheng can’t even be mad at himself for that.
~*~*~
Nie Mingjue wakes up four months after his qi deviation.
Jiang Cheng isn’t around to see it, but Nie Zonghui immediately calls for him once it happens, so at least Jiang Cheng has some time to steel himself to come face to face with Nie Mingjue.
He is still in the chamber when Jiang Cheng comes to see him, clearly too weak to immediately walk somewhere else, but he’s sitting up and he looks healthy and that is really all Jiang Cheng ever wanted for him.
“Wanyin,” Nie Mingjue greets him and Jiang Cheng bows slightly to him. “None of that,” Nie Mingjue chastises him and beckons him closer. “I hear my recovery is thanks to you,” Nie Mingjue says with a small smile and Jiang Cheng nods, unsure what he’s supposed to say to that.
It was a lot easier to talk to Nie Mingjue when he was still sleeping, Jiang Cheng finds himself thinking and then immediately afterwards he wants to kick himself.
Nothing is better than having Nie Mingjue being awake and obviously healthy again.
“I only did my duty,” Jiang Cheng presses out and bows his head towards Nie Mingjue again. “I already wrote to Huaisang, he will no doubt be coming soon to take you back to Qinghe,” Jiang Cheng forces himself to say, because he knows that this is what Nie Mingjue wants.
He never did well with being apart from his Sect, and he must be anxious to get back to it.
“Wanyin,” Nie Mingjue says and even without looking up Jiang Cheng can tell that there’s a frown on his face. “What are you talking about?”
“You must be anxious to go home,” Jiang Cheng says, without meeting Nie Mingjue’s eyes.
“Aren’t I home?” Nie Mingjue asks and it’s so surprising that it startles Jiang Cheng into looking at him. “You’re my husband, are you not? Doesn’t that make Lotus Pier my home, too?” Nie Mingjue wants to know and while it’s everything that Jiang Cheng ever wanted to hear, he shakes his head.
“Please,” he almost scoffs out. “We both know this marriage isn’t about that.”
“What is this marriage about then?” Nie Mingjue asks and he sounds honestly curious.
Jiang Cheng can’t even find it in him to hate Nie Mingjue a little bit for making Jiang Cheng say it.
“About this,” he says with a gesture to the room. “I’m pretty sure Nie Huaisang only brought up my name back then because of this. Because I could probably heal you if something should go wrong. And I did, so I guess I served my purpose,” Jiang Cheng bitterly says.
There’s a long moment of silence before Nie Mingjue speaks again and it makes Jiang Cheng uneasy.
“This is not why I married you,” Nie Mingjue eventually speaks up, his voice low and soft and Jiang Cheng can’t help the snort that comes out at that.
Of course it’s why Nie Mingjue married him. Jiang Cheng doesn’t know why he is so intent on pretending anything else now.
“It was the reason your name first came up, that’s right,” Nie Mingjue goes on, and Jiang Cheng’s heart drops right to the floor at hearing his fears confirmed. “But it’s not why I agreed to marry you in the end.”
“Right,” Jiang Cheng huffs out. “What are the reasons then?” he demands to know, his voice bitter and angry but when he looks at Nie Mingjue he deflates.
The look on Nie Mingjue’s face is entirely too soft for Jiang Cheng to take.
“I married you because you’re strong and fierce. Because you love with your whole heart and you would die to protect those you love. I married you because you’re beautiful and sharp and one of the strongest Sect Leader I know. Yes, your name first came up because of your healing abilities; but I would have never married you out of such selfish reasons,” Nie Mingjue says. “I married you because I wanted to. Because I fell in love with you.”
“Oh,” Jiang Cheng breathes out and he inexplicably feels like crying.
“Why did you marry me? If you think I only married you because of what you can do for me, then why did you agree?” Nie Mingjue asks him and Jiang Cheng blushes.
“I’m not good with words,” he mumbles, anxiously turning Zidian on his finger. “I can’t give you a half dozen reasons why I married you.”
“Just give me one,” Nie Mingjue whispers and reaches out to take Jiang Cheng’s hand in his. “Just give me one reason.”
“Because I’m in love with you,” Jiang Cheng admits, even though his face feels like it’s going to go up in flames.
There are a dozen different things he could say about Nie Mingjue and why he first caught his eye and how he managed to keep it, but Jiang Cheng’s throat closes up just thinking about saying them out loud.
When Nie Mingjue raises the hand he just took to press a kiss to the back of it, Jiang Cheng thinks that maybe he doesn’t have to say them all right now for Nie Mingjue to understand.
“I’m not going back yet,” Nie Mingjue tells him once Jiang Cheng feels like he can breathe again and it’s enough to make Jiang Cheng look at Nie Mingjue again.
“What?”
“I have to recuperate and I would like to do it here,” Nie Mingjue says with a small shrug. “I am aware that the first few months of our marriage weren’t all that perfect, but this might be our chance. I hear Huaisang is doing pretty well as Sect Leader; let him lead for a while longer. I think I deserve a break after what happened.
The truth about the qi deviation is on the tip of Jiang Cheng’s tongue, but in the end he doesn’t say anything. He decides to wait for Nie Huaisang, who will be better at explaining than Jiang Cheng is, but deep down Jiang Cheng knows that it’s just out of a selfish desire to not shatter the moment right now.
“I would like that,” Jiang Cheng whispers and when Nie Mingjue tugs on his hand to bring him closer, Jiang Cheng easily follows.
“And I distantly remember someone calling me yifu,” Nie Mingjue mutters and presses a kiss to Jiang Cheng’s head as he tucks him into his side. “Did I dream that?”
“No, you didn’t,” Jiang Cheng says with a slight chuckle, because ever since he took Jin Ling here for the first time, the boy has made it a point to come at least every other day to talk to Nie Mingjue about his day.
“I’d like to hear it in person,” Nie Mingjue admits and Jiang Cheng smiles down at their still intertwined hands.
“There’s nothing that will stop him from saying it again once he hears you’re awake,” Jiang Cheng says, because he knows his nephew and Jin Ling will be so excited to hear that Nie Mingjue is awake.
Nie Mingjue sighs at that and Jiang Cheng cranes his head to look at him worriedly.
“I’m sorry about how the first few months of our marriage went,” Nie Mingjue says and brushes his lips over Jiang Cheng’s forehead. “I’m going to make it up to you,” he promises.
“You’re in luck,” Jiang Cheng says with a slight smile and a faint blush. “You woke up in time for your one year anniversary.”
A sparkle enters Nie Mingjue’s eyes at that and Jiang Cheng briefly wonders what he got himself into, but then Nie Mingjue presses a whispered “Good,” right into Jiang Cheng lips and every and any thought flees his head.
If this is how Nie Mingjue is going to make it up to him, then Jiang Cheng doesn’t mind that at all.

sleeping over at their s/o’s house for the first time [scenarios]
pairings: sakusa kiyoomi; hirugami sachirou; kuroo tetsurou x fem reader
genre: fluff and humor, as per usual
warning(s): n/a
notes: kinda popped off on hirugami’s part. couldn't help myself. not sorry bout it either. can’t wait til we get to see more of his cute lil face in the anime.
Tumblr media
he is so painfully awkward I love him
will just stand in the entryway with his duffle slung over his shoulder, staring straight at you until you tell him when he can put his stuff
this literally isn’t his first time over at your house but he acts like it???
poor baby’s obviously nervous about ~ spending the night ~
immediately washes his hands
brings his own pillow
asks if you’ve sanitized all your surfaces recently/if anyone in your household has been sick lately
does he wanna play video games? not until he’s wiped down all the controllers.
does he wanna watch real housewives? no, but you put it on anyway because you know he secretly loves the drama
does he want a snack? possibly? but refuses to eat on your bed because lying on crumbs is nasty
all he does is get under the covers and hang out
only moves to brush his teeth and, of course, wash his hands
will do a face mask with you but only after thoroughly reading the contents of the bottle/package
wears his hoodie and sweats to bed
is asleep before 10pm
2/10. total party pooper who only gets points because he’s hot and dislikes the same housewives as you do
Moments after releasing a rather loud guffaw at a funny scene from the television show you have playing on your laptop, you hear a small groan echo from beside you. Turning your head to the source of the noise brings your attention to your boyfriend, whose tall form rested on the bed beside you, ensconced in your blankets. His eyelids flutter open and his eyes the color of charcoal fasten on you before narrowing in a small glare of annoyance from underneath the sea of black waves atop his head.
Maybe you would’ve felt even the slightest bit intimidated if his face wasn’t close to being absorbed by the yellow fabric of his hoodie--and if he hadn’t flattened his hair against his forehead by closing the drawstrings to secure his hood around his head.
“Kiyo!” you whine, crossing your arms in front of you chest, “Were you really asleep just now?”
His dark eyebrows furrow as he answers matter-of-factly, “Yes. You know I go to bed at ten o’clock, (f/n). It’s ten thirty.”
You roll your (e/c) eyes at him and protest, “But this is a sleepover! Would it kill you to stay awake a little longer so you can spend some precious time with your beloved girlfriend?”
“Lack of sleep can lead to sickness. Sickness can lead to death. So, yes, staying awake longer to spend precious time with my beloved girlfriend could kill me.”
“I hate you.”
He lets out a long sigh and reaches over towards your laptop to close it, putting an end to your Real Housewives marathon. Once he’s moved it off of your bed, one of his arms snakes around your waist and pulls your body down towards the mattress. His midnight gaze doesn’t falter as he says, “If you get sick, I won’t be able to spend time with you like this, so sleep with me.”
Your heart skips a beat at his tenderly spoken words, and you crawl underneath the covers so you can place your head on his muscular chest and curl up beside him. The feeling of his warmth surrounding you is enough to make you melt into his arms and forgive him for completely ditching you in favor of sleep.
“(F/n).”
“Yes, baby?”
“If you kick me off the bed, this will be our last sleepover.”
Tumblr media
sweet boy who is very excited to spend the night at his girlfriend’s house!!
brings snacks and movies
he enjoys doing any activity with you, whether it’s watching movies, playing video/board games, or just cuddling on the couch and talking
not hard to please at all!!!
watches rom coms with you. secretly a hopeless romantic
you’ll probably spend at least ten minutes of your night trying to catch pieces of popcorn in your mouths
and another ten doing the same thing with m&ms
poor boy is too tall to fit under your blankets, so you have to give him an extra one for his legs and feet
bedtime attire consists of boxers with corgis on them, a sweater, and crew socks to keep his tootsies warm 🥺
brings you a pair of matching, corgi-patterned sleeping shorts bc he wants to twin with you
your parents are gone, meaning you can do chaotic activities...
... like baking at 2am!!
he loves to bake (and you can’t convince me otherwise). pls bake with him
wants to stay up all night with you but ends up passing out around 3am after y'all eat all the cookies you made together
11/10, best sleepover ever
Few things were more romantic than spending an evening with your boyfriend on your hands and knees, against the cold, tile floor of the kitchen, cleaning up the aftermath of the mess you’d created.
Lifting your gaze from the white goop coating the flooring, you glance over at Hirugami, who looks completely unfazed and unbothered despite his face still being decorated with dollops of whipped cream. Beholding this sight once more sends you into another fit of laughter that makes it hard for you to keep yourself steady.
“What?” he asks, a small smile creeping onto his lips at seeing you so amused.
In between breaths, you manage to ask, “Why’ve you still got whipped cream on your face?”
With a roll of his chestnut brown eyes, he uses his fingers to swipe some of it off so he can help himself to another serving. “Obviously,” he scoffs sassily, “I’m saving it for later.” His smart comment makes you snort rather unattractively, which, in turn, causes chuckles to pour out from his mouth. “I’m assuming that’s what you’re doing too, right?”
Your (e/c) eyes widen, since you thought you’d done a good job of clearing up the results of your whipped cream battle from your face. A glance at your reflection in the glass of the oven where the cookies were slowly baking soon proved you wrong. Instead of being irritated by this discovery, however, you let out another, wheezing laugh and fell onto your side.
To any outsider, the situation would’ve looked rather strange--an incredibly tall volleyball player dressed only in corgi-patterned boxers, a sweater, and socks, face covered in whipped cream as he fell about laughing with his girlfriend who wore a similar ensemble and was sporting the same whipped cream situation. However, in your defense, it was two o’clock am, and you were high on sugar.
"Come over here and I’ll get the rest off your face, then,” Hirugami suggests, extending his long arms towards you that beckon you closer to him. After you scoot closer to him, he pulls you into his embrace and starts peppering your skin reddened from laughing so heartily with kisses. With each press of his lips against your face, your heart flutters in your chest.
He only pulls away from you when the oven beeps, alerting you that the cookies you’ve been awaiting are finally ready. But he does so with hesitation, seeing as he’d been caught up in savoring the sweet taste of your lips instead.
“You ready to eat some cookies?” he asks with a grin.
Your reply makes him snicker: “Always.”
Tumblr media
is fully prepared to stay up the entire night (spoiler alert: doesn't)
made an entire party playlist for y'all to listen to throughout the evening
expect lots of dancing, vibing, singing, and buzzfeed unsolved episodes
brings dance dance revolution over to your house and then proceeds to challenge you to a dance off
was not prepared for what you brought to the table
tries twerking to distract you but still fails
will go on a midnight mcdonalds run with you
is the kinda person to share deep, late night thoughts with
only with him can your conversations go from discussing the questions of human existence to debating which form of potatoes is the most elite
will 100% do face masks with you to keep his complexion lookin godly
INSISTS on watching scary movies
expectation: “don’t worry, babe; I got you!!”
reality: is visibly shaking underneath the covers, questioning all the shadows in your house
wears only a pair of shorts to bed even tho it’s cold af (he runs hot, if ya know what I mean heheh)
8/10. would’ve scored the last 2 points if he hadn’t stolen the blankets and made you wonder if your house was haunted
"(F/n).”
The familiar and gentle voice of your boyfriend rouses you from your semi-conscious state, and you hear the sheets of your bed rustle.
“I’m so tired, Tetsu... what is it?” you wonder groggily, not even bothering to open your eyes to see what’s upset him.
“I think your house is haunted,” is his response. Though he speaks calmly and coherently, his hazel eyes are wide with fear and darting around the dark bedroom.
“Oh, stop. I knew it was a bad idea to watch those supernatural Buzzfeed Unsolved episodes before bed.”
The bed sinks behind you, and you feel the warmth of the blanket he’d stolen from you earlier around your body as he pulls you towards him so your back is flush against his chest. While you appreciate his closeness to you, you can tell he’s far from relaxed. The grip his fingers have around one of your shoulders is tight, as if he’s using it as a stress ball.
You murmur his name with indignation and pry his cold hand off your shoulder, but press a gentle kiss against the back of it. “Baby, go to sleep.”
He noticeably stiffens when a quiet whoosh sounds from another part of your house. “What the heck was that?” he asks from where his face is buried in the back of your neck, too afraid to look around and risk finding something he might not want to see.
“The dishwasher.”
“Y-Yeah,” he stammers, “the dishwasher... of course...”
With a gentle groan, you lift your head so you can turn and press a gentle kiss against his forehead in an attempt to soothe him. As soon as you plop back down onto your pillow, Kuroo takes a deep breath and closes his eyes, desperate to get a wink of sleep.
The sound of a creak brings both of you to attention moments later, however, and your heart begins to race.
“That was the house settling... right?” you whisper.
He pulls the blanket over both of your heads, fully cloaking your bodies beneath it and says, “Yeah. Yeah. Let’s go with that.”
At this point, you realize it’s going to be a long night for reasons other than those you’d expected.

SKZ vs. their embarrassed s/o doing aegyo
Pairing: Reader x Member
Word count: 1.9k
Genre: Fluff
Summary: Their s/o gets embarrassed while doing aegyo
Requested by @m4rshm4llow
Masterlist
Tumblr media
Chan
Wouldn’t exactly force you into doing it
But if he knew you were comfortable, then he would be more teasing about it
Chan strikes me as the kind of person who can read people really easily esp if they’re his s/o
So he wouldn’t force you if he knows you don’t like it
But he would tease you into doing it if you don’t mind
And usually you wouldn’t mind doing it he asked
The problem is that you’re in the middle of the dance room with the rest of his members
They’re all watching you intently and waiting for you to do something bcs Jisung thought it would be good to ask you about it
“Do you not want to?”
“No, no, I can do it.”
Chan raises an eyebrow while you mentally prepare yourself
You raise your hands in front of yourself, ready to do the apple heart bite
When you remember everyone’s watching you
And you completely break
Your entire face goes red
Chan immediately goes (´∀`)♡
You kinda bury yourself in his hoodie to shy away
He just laughs as he wraps his arms around you to let you hide away from his friends
Minho
He would be the reason you’re doing it in the first place
“Haha, (Y/n) does cute aegyo”
Because as much as Minho loves you, he likes to see you suffer sometimes
Everyone turns their attention to you at the mention of aegyo
“What?”
You turn to him and he’s giving you that smug smile on his face
“Yeah, you do cute aegyo ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)”
You want to punch him
You don’t do aegyo because you don’t really care much for it
Even if you do it it’s when you’re only with Minho
And it’s something like wanting to either annoy him or get him to do something for you
Like buying you food or stealing bites of whatever he's eating
But he has the look on his face that just lets you know you can’t escape
So you turn back to his friends who are watching you intently
You raise your finger to your cheek and you’re about to let out a whine when you break and cover your face with your hands
You’re blushing like crazy
Minho finally gives in and lets you off the hook
He pulls you into a hug because he kinda feels bad but he also just wanted to see how far you would go
But he still goes all ^-^ because he finds you so cute
Changbin
So we all know how Changbin is the fake maknae
He does aegyo a lot and when you started dating he realised that you might take his spot away
You do it because you like seeing how Binnie seems to challenge you to be cuter than you
So he turns to you and he pouts
“(Y/n), Binnie hungwy”
The moment you see him your heart kinda goes WHOOOOSH ( ˊᵕˋ )♡.°⑅
But you fight back
“(Y/n) is hungwy too, can Binnie get (Y/n) food?”
He subtly raises an eyebrow and turns to his friends
“If Binnie is cuter, then (Y/n) has to get it”
They all turn to you guys and they’re like !!! because they hear the mention of food but half of them are gagging bcs hhsjdhsd why
Oh, it’s on
“Binnie can’t be cuter because (Y/n) is always cuter!”
You’re starting to cringe internally because it finally hits you that his friends and managers can see you
“Binnie is the tiniest!”
You’re around to fight back when you make eye contact with Seungmin and that face he makes when he’s judging the people around him
Your face heats up and you immediately drop your head onto Changbin’s shoulder
“I can’t go on, it’s too embarrassing”
You bury your face into his shirt as he laughs
“I’m sorry, baby. I’ll buy lunch instead”
Success!
But you’d never tell him that was your plan
His members can tell you planned it tho
Bcs everyone knows he’d do anything and everything for you
Hyunjin
Man doesn’t mind doing aegyo but he thinks it’s cute
You don’t really do it either, but Hyunjin LOVES when you do it
You don’t do it because you find it embarrassing
Hyunjin likes trying to pull it out of you anytime he gets
Bcs whenever you do it he gets so (。♥‿♥。)
So he tries to lure you into doing it one day
You’re at home just chilling on the couch when you see him eating ice cream
“What flavour is that?”
He sees the opportunity immediately
“Cookies and cream”
“Can I have some, please?”
Hyunjin turns to you and raises an eyebrow
“Do aegyo and I’ll consider it”
You’re already blushing because what
He gives you a look and it makes your face scrunch up in annoyance bcs you realise there’s no way out of it
“C-Can (Y/n) have some of J-Jinnies—”
Your voice is so soft
And you just cover your face with your hands before you finish because you feel embarrassed
“Are you okay?”
Hyunjin feels bad because he thought he heard you sniffle
His ice cream’s on the coffee table and he’s pulling you into him
“Baby, nooooooo I’m sorry”
You pull away and punch his arm lightly and Hyunjin laughs because he feels like he deserves it for making you do aegyo
Jisung
God he wouldn’t force you to do it, but whatever opportunity he gets to see you do it will make you do it
He would also probably most likely find ways to make you do it without him actually asking
So it’s like
Idk he would find a way to pull it out of you without making it seem like he’s doing anything
So if it just so happened that you were spending the night at the dorm and everyone was in the living room
It would be Jisung that would end up going “Whoever does the worst aegyo has to do the dishes”
And you’re like “umm I’m excluded because I’m not part of the band...right?”
And at first they’re all thinking yea that sounds pretty fair
Then Minho starts talking
“You’re here already, might as well join in”
You turn to him before turning back to Jisung
He can see the look in your eyes
But Jisung smiles
“You do cute aegyo, right, baby?”
“I hate you”
You turn back to his friends seeing that Changbin and Hyunjin have already went ahead with theirs
You raise your hands to your face but you stop halfway because it’s e m b a r r a s s i n g and all of his friends are watching
So you turn to Jisung and your face is red as hell
He starts panicking for a minute when you turn to him
His mind’s like ヘ(。□°)ヘ shit I made my baby uncomfortable
“Okay, okay, you don’t have to do it baby. We can exclude you”
He pulls you into his lap and lets you hide yourself while his friends bully him for being whipped
“That’s not fair!”
“Shut up, Hyunjin”
Felix
Genuinely feel like Felix would have regular aegyo interactions for not so basic things
Like he would do it randomly because he wants to or if he wants to get you to do something for him
And you would do it too
“Are you sure?”
You give him a nod
You made a bet saying if you can take his breath away with your super duper adorable aegyo then he has to buy you Animal Crossing for your Switch that you had also won through another bet
Felix watches you as he waits for your next move
You look him dead in the eye
If he’s being honest you look like a determined kitten and he loves it (。♥‿♥。)
And you press your fingers into both of your cheeks
“Can Lixie pwease get Animal Cwossing for meeeee? ... PFFFTTT”
You start laughing bcs you feel lowkey kinda cringey
The moment Felix realises that you broke he’s all giggly and starts to wrap his arms around you
“Aww babe”
You cover your face with your hands and just go AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
And Felix is just like uwu because he thinks his baby is so cute and precious
“You lost tho, babe”
“Shut up”
Seungmin
Would pretend he finds it cringey
So you use it as like a weapon against him
Because he’ll do things to make you stop
“Seungmin, I’ll sing the gwiyomi song if you won’t take me to have lunch at that stall by the 7 11”
“( - _ - ‘ )”
Seungmin loves it
He really loves it
And you know that he likes it because he always smiles or laughs whenever you actually do it bcs he can’t resist your adorable charm uwu
He also wouldn’t ask you to do it if he didn’t like it
“We can get jjajangmyeon if you do Back Door but aegyo”
“What…”
How are you supposed to aegyo BACK DOOR
You just stare at him like wtf while you try to figure it out bcs you want the jjajangmyeon
You raise your fist in the air like trying to do the choreo
And you realise that you probably look really silly doing it
“Min this is so weird”
Even though you’re alone with him it just feels so cringey and embarrassing
But the smug bitch is just smiling at you because he knows he’s won
Well
If you can’t do Back Door might as well try something else
So you pout and give him your best puppy eyes
“Minnie, don’t be so mean. Can we please get jjajangmyeon?”
BOOM
Seungmin’s heart goes (*≧∀≦*)
Even if he wouldn’t admit it
He absolutely L O V E S your puppy eyes
And he wouldn’t admit it but he seriously just can’t reject anything you ask of him whenever he sees your puppy eyes
Jeongin
I would assume that Jeongin would probably date someone who’s probably smol and soft like he is
So assumingly his s/o would probably be as shy as him or even more shy
And since you’re like technically his s/o
You’re a smol shy bean
Very smol
Very shy
Tinie (´∀`)♡
Jeongin doesn’t strike me as someone who would do aegyo regularly bcs like I said he’s shy
So you probably wouldn’t do it that much either unless someone Jeongin would ask you to but even then I don’t see him asking you for aegyo regularly
I feel like it would be more of a joking kinda thing
Kinda like
“(Y/n) if you do aegyo then I’ll let you shoot me with this BB gun”
“Bet”
And you’d do it
But he wouldn’t actively force you into situations where you would have to do it because he would feel bad if you got like too embarrassed or anything of that sorts
It just so happened that when you were about to do aegyo in the dance room
His members walked in
And you had the biggest pout on your face and your hands poking your cheeks
That you kinda yanked onto Jeongin’s hoodie so that you could hug him to hide yourself
“Woah, (Y/n) was doing aegyo?”
And of course the rest of Stray Kids wanna tease you or Jeongin about it
“Do it again!”
“Yeah, you never do aegyo. I wanna see it c:”
But Innie would go all <(`^´)>
Because he’s protective of you
“Don’t make fun of them!!!”
He just
Wraps his arms around you
And protects you while the guys end up teasing Jeongin instead
And he takes it as long as they don’t say anything to you uwu

I saw ur dating headcanons and they were really sweet, so what about //checks notes// All Might, Hawk, and Tamaki? i am but a simp
Ur darn tootin’ I can I can’t believe I just typed that Anyways, headcanons requests are open!
All Might|Yagi Toshinori
-An actual ray of sunshine, love is stored in the Toshinori. For real though, he’s such a good boyfriend??? He genuinely cares about you and wants to support you however he can and would probably bring you the moon if it made you happy.
-So you guys probably met either as both heroes, or both as civilians. I think he’d be too worried about openly dating a civilian as All Might, but if you were a hero he’d be a little more okay with it, since you can obviously take care of yourself. But if you met him as Toshinori and not as All Might, that would be the best case scenario.
-However you guys meet, he’s probably really drawn to you at first, maybe not even romantically, just interested in you as a person. So he makes small talk to test the waters, see if you’re into the potential of a friendship, and you guys end up hitting it off!
-You probably don’t get to hang out very much, what with him being a teacher and living on the Yuuei campus, and you being a pro with your own busy work life. So you guys exchange phone numbers and keep in contact that way! He prefers to actually talk to you over the phone, but if you’re not feeling up to it he’ll settle for texting.
-Send him memes and watch his confusion as he tries to figure out what the hell the image means. He loves his kids, but he’s really not in with the young crowd XD
-Like doing relaxing activities with you, like walks in the park, private dinners and lunches, and corny shit like getting dressed up and slow dancing in your living room. He really is a huge sap, and values the time you have together.
-He gets down on himself sometimes, blames himself for a lot of things, so give him gentle affirmations and kind words. Tell him what you like about him, how he makes you feel, how you appreciate him, stuff like that! And if he’s still sad, then lay the logic on him, give him facts and truths that he can’t deny. It might not solve the problem right away, but he’ll at least appreciate your efforts.
-He loves you so much tho, like damn. He is absolutely your number one fan, biggest simp on the block. All you have to do is look at him and he turns into a pile of mush, you just make him happy, and help him feel at peace.
-He loves cuddling, too. In public, hell yeah he’s gonna hold ur hand, and kiss your cheek, and hug you close. But in private is really where it’s at. He becomes an octopus, pressing up against you and wrapping you up in his arms. He likes feeling you so close to him, feeling the warmth from your body and the best of your heart.
-If u guys are snuggled up somewhere and you stat playing with his hair, he’s gonna turn into a cat. His eyes fall shut and he just lays there in bliss.
-As sweet as he is, it can also backfire. He’s a worrier by nature, so whenever you’re not around, or you’re not answering your phone, his mind immediately jumps to ‘did they get hurt’. Even if 99% of the time you’re just busy or on patrol or something, he’s still gonna stress. His job hasn’t really been to kind to him in that aspect, and he’s learned to always be looking over his shoulder.
-The tried and true way to calm him down is to give him a lil kiss, on the forehead, on the cheek, on the back of his hand, all over his face, you name it. It never fails to make him smile.
-His kisses tho. What a way to make you melt. You can feel the love he has for you poured into every kiss, whether its a small peck, or a more heated make out. The way he holds your face is so gentle, as if you’re the most precious thing in the world to him. Which, well, you kind of are.
-He’s a good guy though, and his love for you is immeasurable. He requires a lot of verbal affirmations and soft touches, and he always returns them tenfold. He’s willing to help you out with work cases if you need it, and supports you in all your escapades. He’s funny, and charming, and sweet, and absolutely loyal to you. Please be gentle with his heart.
Hawks|Takami Keigo
-This mf.
-Dating him is both a really good idea, and a really bad idea. He’s young, he’s famous, he’s on a lot of people’s shit lists. Dating him would without a doubt put you in danger at some point. That being said, once you actually get him to open up, he’s kind and funny and smart and loyal.
-Something I think he’d really like in a person is genuineness and honesty. Not necessarily wearing your heart on your sleeve, but a willingness to open up once you trust him. He likes knowing things about you, your hobbies and interests and dislikes, the way you like your eggs, what you take in your coffee, mundane stuff like that. He never really gets to know people on a deeper level, so it’s something he enjoys with you.
-It would probably take a long time of knowing him before you started dating. He’d want to get to know you as a friend first, know that you wouldn’t just be using him for popularity. Plus he’d want to trust you some before he starts baring his heart to you, because despite his persona, he has a lot of troubles and shit he’s hidden away.
-Don’t push him to open up, though. That’s the fastest way to get him to clam up. Instead let him know that you’re there for him, both with words and actions. If you tell him you’re gonna do something, then make sure you do it. Not only will he be proud of your accomplishments, but he’ll gradually learn that he can trust your word.
-It might also help him be more comfy opening up if you also let him in on your more private life. Tell him about things that have scared you in the past, or done harm to you, events, people, whatever you’re willing to let him in on. He’s not gonna tell anyone unless you ask him to, though he will later joke about wanting to kick the asses of the people who’ve hurt you.
-He’s hella protective of you. Not possessive, he wants you to be able to do your own thing and maintain your own life, but if anyone dares hurt a hair on your head then he’s going to hunt them down. He makes that fact pretty clear to the public.
-He will try and convince you to take precautions about your safety, because of his job. Like moving in with him as soon as you’re ready, making sure someone always knows where you’re planning to be in case something happens, stuff like that. If he ever gets a little to suffocating, let him know and be up front about it. He’ll sulk for a while, but he’ll do his best to trust you on the matter.
-This guy is also touch starved as fuck. Like, god when was the last time someone held him. Some please hold him.
-He won’t always ask for physical affection, beyond some hugs and cuddles in bed, so it’s up to you to read his body language and know when he needs it. If he looks even slightly stressed or like there’s a crack in his facade, lay down on the couch, hold him against your chest, and pet his hair until the tension eases out of his body.
-Once he’s all nice and mellow, he’ll perk up a little and stretch up for a kiss. It probably starts small and then escalates to something more, because let’s be real here, his desire for physical touch absolutely carries over to kissing. He can’t get enough of you, and probably tries to kiss you even at the most inopportune times.
-The first time he showed you his true colours, he ended up crying in your arms until he fell asleep. He tried to apologize for it later probably, but you better shut that shit down and reinforce the fact that he is a person and not an object and that he has feelings and needs and that he’s allowed to be sad and angry and scared.
-If he’s shown you all of himself, then that’s it for him. You’re it for him. You’re his person, and he’s never going to love someone else the way he loves you. After he decides this, expect his affection to quadruple.
-He’ll bring you trinkets that made him think of you, odds and ends for whatever you collect, pretty clothes, fancy food, you name it. Nothing is too expensive for him, even if you scold him for being too lavish sometimes.
-Will take you to every event that he’s allowed to, and will proudly show you off to everyone you meet, even if they already know who you are. He’ll be close by you the whole night, with your shoulders bumping or a hand on the small of your back. He just really loves being near you.
-If it’s a fancy event that he takes you to, like a gala or smth, then you bet your ass he’s gonna dance with you all night long. Screw socializing with other people, you’re all dolled up and looking fiiiine asf, all his attention is on you. And honestly it’s pretty romantic, just swaying with him while he holds you close, foreheads touching, whispering quiet nothings to each other. The tabloids probably get some really good shots of you guys making gooey eyes at each other.
-A good asf boyfriend. Hard egg to crack, but once he lets you into his heart, he’s squishy and really a nice person. He overworks and hides his stress well, but once he trusts you he’ll let you help with that. He’s protective and soft just for you, and probably the most loyal of the bunch (which is saying a lot). Good for cuddling and hanging out with, and all your dates are fun because he hasn’t had the chance to do a lot of leisure things, which is a little sad, but it also means you get to see the way his eyes light up when he tries something new.
Suneater|Amajiki Tamaki
-Okay I relate to this guy the most in terms of personality. I, too, am an anxious mess. But I digress, you’re here for him, not me XD Anyways. You’re going to have to be the one to ask him out, hands down. Unless he’s 100% certain about your feelings, it’s gonna be you.
-And you’ll want to get to know him as a friend first, otherwise he’ll turn you down. Slow, small steps are a friend to anxiety, so you have to work your way up. Spend time getting to know him in all aspects of his life. Take in interest in things he likes, show that you pay attention to him, ask for advice about things, that sort of stuff. Show him that you trust him and respect his opinions, it’ll help him to trust you and yours.
-He’s shy as hell when you first start dating. Like, he almost stops breathing at the thought of holding your hand, never mind kissing you. Again, you’ll have to be the one to initiate, but please do it somewhere private or less populated. Always make sure to give him an out if he gets uncomfortable.
-Once you do manage to get to the kissing stage, though, I think he’d actually be the one to ask you for it. It would probably be weighing on his mind for days, so much so that he’s more distracted than usual, and you take notice. If you ask him what’s wrong, he’ll deflate and quietly admit that he can’t stop thinking about you, and then he’ll turn bright red.
-Reassure him that you’re into it and that you feel the same way, and that kiss is gonna happen.
-His kisses are really sweet and soft, the kind of kiss that just turns your heart into a puddle and makes your stomach flutter. And the more you do it, the more confident he gets. He might even be able to eventually work up to kissing you before class in the hallway, or in passing at the dorms.
-Behind closed doors, he’s a lot more bold. He definitely likes for you to take the lead with things, but when it’s just the two of you he’s not so shy about his desire to be close to you, and has no qualms about laying down beside you and holding you close, or resting his head on your thigh while you study.
-Please touch him regularly, a hand on his shoulder here, a gentle nudge there. He likes your touch, and he likes how gentle and non abrasive you are.
-Dates will almost always be chill. Mundane things like walks on the beach, trips to the zoo, a night in with home made dinner and a movie, soft shit like that is his jam.
-He’s also surprisingly protective of you, even though he knows you can hold your own. He wants to make sure that you never have to face anything by yourself, though, since everyone is stronger when they’re not alone. You make him stronger, so he wants to return the favour.
-That being said, if he’s watching you train then he’s not going to jump in and help, he knows you need to practice. He’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines instead! Very quietly, but you can see in his smile the pride he has for you.
-A good boi, a very good boi. He’s sweet and gentle, caring, and though he gets hella anxious sometimes, he’s always gonna do his best to be there for you, and be someone worth your time (even tho he’s already worth your time as he is). He’ll support you and listen to you, and help you solve problems if you have them, and if you’re just feeling shitty about something then he’ll cuddle the crap out of you. He’s strong in his own way, and you know that he tries so hard, so make sure to tell him how much you appreciate his efforts!

I really love your writing! Could I request #2 for Saeyoung? Perhaps a hurt/comfort :)
Ohhhh, thank you so much!! That makes me really happy to hear ♡
And here is the fic! I think a lot about making Saeyoung go to sleep and honestly don’t know how I’ve never written this scenario before. Darling sleepy overworked boy.
two: fall into your arms again
SaeyoungXReader, T, words: 1764
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・
You’re dreaming of driving when he calls you—it’s a recurring nightmare of yours, where you’re at the wheel and suddenly you realize the car has no brakes. The ringtone makes its way into your dream, and you’re panicking, you’re panicking—where is the phone, why can’t you stop the car?
You wake abruptly, eyes flying open in the way they sometimes do after a nightmare. The phone is still ringing. You scramble for it and find it tangled in the sheets.
You squint at the screen: it’s after three in the morning.
“H-hello?” You yawn as you answer, your head falling back against the pillow.
“Ohh…did I wake you up? I guess I lost track of time,” he laughs, but it sounds forced. You push yourself up a little in bed.
“Saeyoung, are you okay? Did something happen?” There’s a sinking feeling in your stomach. Things have just finally started to go well.
“No, no!” He’s too loud, too enthusiastic. “We’re okay! Saeran is asleep.”
“Saeyoung, it’s almost four in the morning.”
He yelps. “Really? I didn’t even notice! I’m sorry, babe. Ignore me and go back to sleep. Please.”
You sigh, sitting all the way up, propping the pillows behind your head. “Will you tell me what’s bothering you?”
“God Seven is bothered by nothing! God Seven was just doing some work and wanted to hear his kitty cat’s cute voice! Ha-hah!”
“Saeyoung…”
“Activate kitty communication mode! Meow! Meow? Meeooow!”
He’s too adorable—his distraction tactics are too good. Once upon a time, you would’ve given it to it, would’ve let him ramble nonsensically until he wore himself out. You know better now.
“Saeyoung, when was the last time you slept?”
You hear him counting to himself. “Twelve, thirteen, fourteen…twenty-six, twenty-seven…” Oh no. “Forty-four hours ago!” he sings triumphantly.
“Saeyoung!”
“Whaaat?”
“Forty-four hours ago was when I last spent the night. You haven’t slept since then?”
“Nooope. But it’s okaaaay! God Seven can work for much longer without sleeping because it’s what he was programmed to do!” He draws out his syllables, speaking in a sing-song.
“Hey. Stop. Listen to me.” You know he hears the frustration in your voice because he shuts up right away. “You do not work for the agency anymore. Even Saeran is sleeping right now, like a normal person. You do not need to work through the night anymore.”
“But I do,” he says. His voice sounds a little more subdued now. “The agency may be done, but there’s still so much cleanup work to do. There’s so many loose ends. If I’m resting, they’re tracking Saeran, tracking Vanderwood, tracking you… I can’t—”
“No,” you say. “Uh-uh.” You’re already slipping out of bed, groping around in the dark for some sweatpants. “I know there’s still work to do and I know you’re worried about keeping us safe. And you can do that work. After you’ve slept for eight hours.”
He laughs and it sounds almost like a sob. “I’ve just found him,” he says, so quietly you can barely hear him. “I’ve just got him back. If anything happens to him…”
“I know,” you say. “I know, babe. But none of that matters if you work yourself to death in the process.”
You’ve got pants, you’ve got shoes. You grab a jacket and the keys to the rental car Saeyoung insisted on paying for so you wouldn’t be reliant on him while he was holed up in his bunker with Saeran.
“Hah,” he says. “It would take a lot more than a few hours of work to kill me.”
You’re outside, the cool air bracing you, waking you the rest of the way up.
“I’d like you one hundred percent alive instead of just barely hanging on,” you tell him.
You throw open the car door with perhaps slightly too much force.
He hesitates. “What was…are you outside?”
“Yes. I’m coming over.”
“You—g-gah, what?!” He sounds frantic. You hear a crash—almost as if he’s sweeping something (realistically, a pile of junk food) off his desk.
“I’m coming over right now and putting you to bed. If you don’t want me to stay, I won’t, but you are going to sleep one way or another,” you say. You start the car and you know he hears it through the phone—you’re not playing around.
“I’m perfectly capable of—” he whines.
“Thirty minutes. Love you,” you say, and hang up before he can respond.
。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。
You get there in no time because the roads are empty. He’s cleverly disabled the car’s built-in GPS so that the rental company can never access any of the data, never pinpoint his address (not that his bunker actually has an address). It doesn’t matter: you know the way by heart.
You give the password that will let you into the garage, park, and peer into the retinal scanner by the door—he’s added this feature for you, only for you. The door welcomes you by name and swings open with a soft click.
The bunker feels bigger and emptier at night; it’s completely dark except for the tiny ray of light coming from his office door, which is cracked open just a hair. You sigh. You’d had hope—just a little—that knowing you were coming would guilt him into just going to bed already. But he is stubborn.
You pad across the huge living room and knock gently on his door. He knows you’re here, of course—he’s probably been watching you on the cameras ever since you pulled into the driveway. But just in case—he’s not someone you want to ever catch off guard.
“Hi,” he says softly—his voice sounds far away. You push open the door.
“Oh, Saeyoung…”
His office is never exactly tidy, but this is a disaster zone.
There are chip bags and other assorted wrappers strewn over the desk and on the floor around it. Several creepy, half-built robots lay at odd angles on the couch and floor, as if he’s been fiddling with them as he works and then tossing them aside—one blinks eerily at you with its single eye. There are clothes thrown over the couch and the backs of his various desk chairs, as though he’s been managing to periodically change outfits without ever setting foot in his bedroom.
And there he is, your precious, anxious, manic boy, sitting in his chair with his knees pulled up to his chest, hunched over his desk, fingers still moving over the keys even as he turns to look at you.
“You didn’t have to come,” he says, his voice hoarse.
“That’s a crappy greeting for your favorite person in the world who just drove here in the middle of the night,” you say, but you’re not not really angry at him—how could you be, when he’s in this state? You cross the room, stepping over the piles of junk. Up close, he looks terrible—there are dark circles under his eyes and he has that pale, hollow look he gets when he goes too long without seeing the sun.
“I’m sorry,” he mutters. “Bright, wonderful people like you should be asleep at this time of night.”
“Everyone should be asleep at this time of night,” you tell him. You brush the messy, tangled hair off his forehead and kiss him on the cheek. He closes his eyes for a moment, humming contentedly; then he reaches for you, tilting his head up for a proper kiss.
“Nuh-uh,” you say, and he deflates, pouting. “Find a stopping point—the first possible stopping point. Then you are going to bed.”
“Orrrrr…” he murmurs, nuzzling his head against your waist. One hand trails up your leg, leaving goosebumps in its wake.
“Saeyoung.”
“Fiiiine.” He reluctantly spins his chair around, types another line. “You go get in the bed,” he says, eyes on the screen. “I’ll be there soon.”
“Nope.” You cross your arms and sit on the couch, moving aside half of a robot dragon. “I don’t trust you.”
He makes a sound somewhere between a hiss and a groan and starts typing more quickly. Good. If he’s motivated to finish faster because you’re now losing sleep, then so be it. At least he’s stopping.
The sound of his typing soothes you. You fiddle with the little dragon—it will be very cute, once he builds the other side of its head. His typing slows. He hits a few more keys. You recognize the sounds of him finishing up—god knows how much collective time you’ve spent listening to him work.
“Okay,” he says at last, and you look up to see him getting out of his chair, a little clumsily.
“Yes?”
“Yes.”
You skip to him and grab his hand. “Bedtime,” you say seriously, tugging him behind you: through the door, down the hall. He laughs, and it’s the most genuine he’s sounded all night. You throw open the door to his room and take a running leap onto the bed. He’s still laughing, watching you from the doorway with warm eyes.
“Come,” you say, wriggling yourself into the blankets, holding out your arms to him. Obediently, he shuts the door and comes to you, falling headfirst onto the messy pile of pillows and blankets and you. He groans quietly, his shoulder muscles finally relaxing. You pull him toward you and he settles his head onto your chest.
“S’feels nice,” he slurs, snuggling into you. You see how hard the exhaustion is hitting him now that he’s closed his eyes; you make a snug nest of blankets around him, tucking them up to his neck.
“I’ve got you,” you whisper. “You can rest now.”
“Mmmmmm but…” His words are hard to make out, his voice already thick with sleep. “But there are soooo many other things we could be doing…in this bed…”
He tries to lift an arm, vaguely brushing his fingertips over your neck. You giggle.
“Shhhh, love. Maybe in the morning,” you tell him. You kiss the top of his head, nuzzling your nose into his messy, sweet-smelling hair. He doesn’t respond. “Babe?”
His head is heavy on your chest. You feel his breath on your neck, slow and steady. You smile to yourself—he’s already asleep.
So you wrap your arms tightly around him and close your eyes, head propped on top of his. You are a mess of blankets and limbs and heartbeats and you feel impossibly, indescribably safe. “Goodnight, Saeyoung,” you whisper.

Are u still taking requests simp coz I really wanna know what it'd be like playing Hide n Seek with da Sawyer boys.
Alright friendo I hope you enjoy the trash! ❤️
Bubba:
This perfect child boy plays the proper way it supposed to be played. But he’s more excited about it since he never really got to grow up doing normal childhood things.
He gets super into it and makes sure he follows all the rules to a T. He wants to make sure he’s doing it right!
Please please please let this baby boy win. He really needs this.
That being said, he is NOT the best at hiding. He’s too excited and he’s always making little happy sounds or fidgeting.
Also the boy is a damn truck and he chooses to hide behind the chair in the living(??????) room.
He’s so happy to play though, it’s all he’s gonna want to do for days on end after he’s played the first game with you. He’s gonna get more creative and Sawyer-like with his hiding spots though.
Catch this boy man deadass hiding behind a hanging body on a hook. Or he’ll just switch his face and be sitting on the couch like you won’t know it’s him.
This boy is precious, please just let him have this.
Now when it comes to him finding you, he might have a little bit of trouble with that.
Yes he knows the land and property very well. He has to. But you can probably fit in places that he can’t. So you can probably go unnoticed by him very easily if you wanted to.
Don’t make it too hard on him though. He’ll get discouraged easily if it takes him too long. He’ll get sad and think maybe you’ve played a prank on him, like his brothers do, and you just wanted him to leave the room.
I’m not saying to hide in obvious places or let him find you, but like.....yes I am. At least in the beginning so he can get the hang of the game again.
One day you both managed to find really good hiding spots and it took the both of you hours to find each other. Drayton was pissed beyond words as to where all his help went.
When he plays with his brothers it’s a whole different game!! He has to climb trees, search the roof, graveyards, the open road, etc just to hopefully get a glimpse of these gremlins.
The twins are way too good at hiding and he may or may not have found them both in a pile of bones one day.
The twins always seems to find him way too quickly, cheating is probably involved. So he doesn’t like to play when they’re seeking.
Nubbins:
This trash gremlin hasn’t played this game with anybody (willingly) in years. So when people actually agree to play with him he’s pumped tf up!!
He usually plays his own bastardized form of it with victims, but this version is almost as fun to him.
He knows literally all the hiding places and is like a cat and can fit almost anywhere. And I mean anywhere.
I would say he’s good at this game, but I’d be lying since whenever he has to hide he’s usually cackling or giggling up a storm and can’t stay still to save his life!!
He’s just too energetic to stay still ok!
Besides annoying his brothers or causing chaos with them, this is his favorite game.
How do you think he’s managed to avoid the authorities this whole time? Boy knows how to hide when he has to.
Now if he’s the one seeking, find the best spot you can because this boy is like a bloodhound.
He’s gonna find you one way or the other.
He doesn’t do the normal “I found you!!” Thats you’re supposed to do. He either throws something at you or straight up tackles you.
He might even pin you down and torment you in the way siblings do. He’s gonna be poking and prodding you and making fun of you.
Bubba fears when’s he’s in a hide and seek mood because he always pops out of nowhere and laughs like crazy when he scares poor Bubba.
Drayton hates this game because he can never find Nubbins to hit with his broom. 0/10 for this game if you ask him.
Hide and seek can last days, maybe even a week, tops with him. He gets way to into it if you ask me.
But it always ends the same. One of you is miserable and the other is beat up.
This is not a nice game when played with him. Somebody is gonna bleed one way or the other.
Just bring some bandaids.
Chop Top:
He doesn’t find it as fun as his twin, but I’d be lying if I said he didn’t find it so funny to play with victims and experience their reactions
Unlike his twin, he’s not the most patient when it comes to this game. So after a while he either gives up trying to find you or, if he’s hiding, he’ll just straight up leave.
He finds it so funny when you come back fuming because he had you out there playing a game by yourself for an hour.
He’s not the best at this game because he also just can’t sit still. He’s either humming a tune or dancing to it.
He is honestly the easiest to find or hide from because of that.
But if there ever comes a day when he’s super into the game, he’s gonna go all out! He’s gonna put his military training to questionable use!
He’ll find the most obscure places to hide. Was that a noise coming from the air vent? No it couldn’t have been. Wait, did that rock just move??? No, you’re just being silly.
When he’s the one seeking he’s not the best sport. He won’t just be looking to see if you’re in a spot. He’s gonna be throwing things at his places he thinks you might be. He’ll just randomly scream to see if he can scare you out of hiding. He will be a bastard.
Drayton actively fears when Chop decides to play this game. That boy is gonna give him a heart attack one day, he just knows it!
Bubba doesn’t like to play hide and seek with him because he always gets too angry about either not being found or not being able to find the person hiding.
Chop and Nubbins once played a game that lasted 3 days. Both of them were convinced that the other was supposed to be the seeker.
It was both the most peaceful and annoying days Drayton had ever had. He only had one brother to help him out for those 3 days. Poor Bubba.
When Drayton asks him to do a chore he doesn’t like Chop goes off and hides and comes back to a fuming Drayton explaining that he thought he wanted to play a round.
I’m not too sure if you should let him win every round or not. I feel like he’d get very bored of winning or losing. It’d probably just be in your best interest to make the games interesting.
Drayton:
Lol wut?
He suggests his brothers(whichever ones are annoying him most that day) go hide so he can find them. But obviously he never bothers to go looking
Chop catches on the fastest, it’s takes Bubba a bit to realize he’s never gonna come look for him, and legend says Nubbins is still gone to the day.
He abuses the game to get some peace and quiet around here for once!!

The Art of Inversion
Neil x Reader
Chapter 22 - Not Strong Enough
Masterlist; Chapter 21
Summary: You reunite with Neil aboard the icebreaker. With the tension amping up and the mission nearing it’s finale, you have a difficult time making sense of everything.
Warnings: angst (yep, loads of it), swearing.
Author’s Notes: Here it is, finally! Know it took me ages, and I’m so sorry for that. Hopefully from now on it won’t be as bad... This one was fun to write since there’s a lot of emotions to go through :)) Hope you’ll enjoy! Let me know what you think!
PS. Now that we’re onto the icebreaker chapters let me just say that I’ve got a lot planned ;) and I’m excited to share it so thank you all who have sticked around <3
Tumblr media
The moment you stepped out of the inversion chambers and into the normal world (well, normal but looking fucked up to you and eight days previously), Ives received the promised further instructions. Get to Trondheim with the local squad, regroup with the reinforcements there, get on board the icebreaker equipped with the inversion technology. At least that was the information you got. Easy. Well, almost, but thankfully nothing seemed to depend on you. Yet. So, you followed the rest of the squad onto the chinook, ignoring the phone that never rang anymore. That was okay. You would not even know what to tell Neil if he called. In less than two hours, you were on military transport to Norway. Again.
In the tense silence of those hours of flight, it was easy to rest. At least you have changed the setting and could focus on stressing about all that was to come instead of the personal matters. Yes, you would have to face Neil and probably work with him as though nothing happened. But the more pressing matter was the potential world ending. For that, you could endure the pain. Focusing on avoiding hyperventilation through the mask, you fell asleep, giving in to the tiredness. When Wheeler shook you awake hours later, you have landed at the base in Trondheim. The icebreaker was supposed to cross by the shore on the next day, leaving the night to be camped out in the military containers on the periphery of the base.
You were lucky to land a spot in the container shared with Wheeler, as she was second in command, and you were still considered ‘precious cargo’. Precious to whom you had no idea. But that did not matter. After a quick meal made up of tin food and weak tea from the thermos, your roommate left for an inspection of the troops and a confab with Ives. You had peace. Taking off the unnecessary layers of clothing, you intended to use the time to curl up under the covers and mope. But it was not meant to be. Suddenly the silence of the air-locked container got pierced by your phone ringing. What the hell… Glancing at the display, your heart stopped for a split second. For a moment, you wanted to ignore it. To pretend you are not available. But your heart knew better, unable to give up the possibility of hearing his voice after all this time. Sitting up on the cot, you picked up the phone. A long exhale on the other side followed by…
“Hey”
As simple as that. Fuck. Neil’s voice was enough to trigger the feelings. The husky tone, the tiredness you sensed through that one word alone. The advantage of the phone call was that he could not hide too much. Not from you.
“Hi… um, why…” you trailed off, annoyed at how something so simple could disrupt the fragile peace.
But judging by the long pause, it was not just you for whom the conversation was a struggle. Brilliant.
“TP told me to call you” right, “Give you a run-down of the state of affairs, so tomorrow is easier for us all,” he added, using that professional tone you came to detest.
Call you? The voice of reason tried to break through the amalgamation of thoughts and feelings. It did not make much sense, seeing as TP did not even trust you after the latest revelations.
“Me?” you blurted out.
Anyone else would have been a more obvious choice. But Neil called you. Why? You wanted to add that question to the mix, but before you could do so, he came up with an answer.
“Not exactly, but I’ve decided that you can pass it on to Ives and so on” the uncertainty in his voice ignited the spark.
“I see” that was the only comment you could muster.
But he understood. He cleared his throat before resuming the conversation. An image flashed before your eyes: tired Neil, with ruffled hair, curled up in the armchair in Oslo, glancing at you from the pages of the book you just borrowed him. That stupid soft smile gracing his exquisite features. Eyes sparkling with satisfaction and affection. Enough.
“We’ve managed to save Kat with that stunt in Oslo…” his voice brought you back to the present moment.
That was something. Despite not having even talked to Kat, you felt sympathy towards her.
“I’m glad. Is she alright?” you occupied the shaking hands with picking up pieces of lint off the blanket.
It did not help your racing pulse. Or the increasing ache in your chest.
“Yeah, she’s recovering. There’s a scar, but that’s nothing compared to what could’ve happened”
God knows what made you say the first thing on your mind then:
“We’ve all been scarred… one way or another” as soon as the words left your mouth, you knew that it was too much.
Fucked up again. It was difficult to remember that you were not supposed to share your thoughts with him anymore. That this was not allowed. Once again, so much had to be left unspoken just for the sake of your sanity.
“I know that better than anyone” his response and the sombre tone made you swallow hard.
Of course. You had no doubts he was regretting the decision to take that bullet for you in New York. After all, the scar was there to haunt him for eternity, reminding him of the time and effort wasted on you.
“TP met with Priya in Oslo…” the change of topic was vital, “She told him about the algorithm and got us the icebreaker” Neil explained.
Back to business. Thank God. All would be perfect if it was not for the audible strain in his voice. It was evidently torturing. For both of you.
“Sator’s got it? All of the parts?” clearing your head, you asked the most important of questions.
How fucked were you?
“Yes,” no hesitation.
Very much so. What would life be without a world-ending scenario taking place just when everything was coming apart? Too boring, probably.
“Fuck” you breathed into the phone, taking a beat to think, “Do we know where? When?”
At least anxiety now had a proper anchor. Something to dig into and stay fixed for a while. A constant companion.
“The day of the Kiev opera siege. But I don’t know where, TP won’t tell me” the remorse was palpable, “Kat helped us piece it together. Sator’s dying, and probably intends to kill himself and trigger the dead-drop, activating the algorithm” double fuck.
Could it get worse? You dared not ask. For a moment, you were grateful Neil called you with the news. At least that way, you heard it from someone you trusted. Or once trusted.
“Jesus…” the silence on the other end was almost comforting, “So that’s the plan? To go back and try to stop him…” you trailed off, raking your head for ways to fix things.
Inversion for over a week more was one thing. Actually pulling this off was another. Because you doubted someone like Sator would be unprepared. You could only hope someone had a plan. Or that your helpful texts would come around. One could wish.
“Yes, in essence,” Neil confirmed your thoughts with that ever-present gloom in his tone.
He was worried too. That eternal desire to comfort him nagged at your bruised heart. It would only get worse once he was within your reach. The collision was unavoidable.
“Okay,” suddenly you wanted nothing but to end the call and sleep, “I’ll let Ives know”
With the awkwardness burning bright, the goodbye was on the tip of your tongue. But…
“I-” Neil cut himself off suddenly.
What? The curiosity was relentless.
“Do you need anything else?” you sat up straighter, forcing the nonchalance.
“No,” after a beat, he added, “Well-”
Christ. There was no power to ignore him.
“Yes?” you stifled the butterflies in your stomach.
It could only hurt more. Surely he would not have anything better to say.
“How are you doing?” the question was dropped with merciless indifference.
You were right. Only he could be that blunt. Unable to keep cool, you cursed out loud:
“Fuck’s sake” taking a deep breath, you gathered all the needed strength to continue, “Neil, do you seriously want me to answer this question?”
There was not enough air in the room. Forcing yourself to calm down, you stared at the wall, counting dents in the metal. Anything to stop the panic.
“I just thought... we’re... I haven’t seen you in over a week and-” he stumbled over the sentence pathetically.
“Maybe it’s better you stop thinking,” you cut him off, feeling the familiar surge of anger “For a while”
How did he dare? You would have thought that he would know better. That he would understand that things changed, and he was no longer allowed access into your mind. But trust Neil to mess it up. To be ignorant of how you felt.
“I didn’t mean to hurt you” the soft tone took you by surprise.
Despite the shock, you were too pissed off to give in.
“... I’m afraid you’ve fucked it then,”
There was no stopping the words that spilled from your throat. They rolled off your tongue, fueled by bitterness and hurt.
“It’s not easy getting over rejection, but then you wouldn’t know that. Everyone wants you. And if they don’t, you move on. No hearts harmed in the process. But not everyone is that lucky” you finished only once there was no breath left in your lungs.
Now he knew. The words hung in the space between you, making the phone seem heavy in your hand. Too much too soon. Just when you thought Neil would not respond, you could hear him take a deep breath before asking:
“Is this really how you understand what I said?” the strange timbre in his voice was confusing.
It was as though he was utterly defeated, devoid of anything but resignation. But why? It was you who were hurting, not him. It made no sense.
“Yes,” that had to suffice.
You already said too much, exposed yourself again. Giving him ammunition to strike when necessary. There was no pretending that you did not care. Or that your misplaced love confession during your last conversation was a lie. A sudden noise at the airlock made you look up. Wheeler entered your shared container, oblivious to the drama taking place. After a second of hesitation, you found that you did not mind the company. Once your eyes met, you just nodded, giving her permission to stay. The sombre half-smile told you she suspected who was on the other end.
“I haven’t pushed you away. When you…” Neil’s voice came through the speaker again.
A hint of desperation. As though he wanted you to understand something obvious. But there was nothing there. You could not forget how he took everything but never gave anything back. It was rather simple.
“There’s a major difference between love and want” stating the truth, you could feel Wheeler’s attentive gaze on you “Doubt you’d push away someone as desperate as I was. Especially when you could have something pleasant out of it. But that doesn’t mean you love me” the strength needed to say those words was all you could manage “I need to go now”
You desperately wanted to bury yourself under the blanket and sleep. Maybe never wake up. That could be nice.
“…I’ll see you tomorrow then” the reluctance tore into the remains of your heart.
Tomorrow. Too soon. You knew there was no way of preparing for it. You would have to endure the unbearable and bear it. The world was more important than your comfort or pride.
“Yes, unfortunately,” the honesty could not hurt anyone.
Least of all Neil. You ended the call before he could say anything else and dropped the phone on the bed. Fuck. Burying your head in the pillow, you tried to level the breathing.
“Are you alright?” Wheeler’s question drifted across the narrow space.
“I will be,” you shrugged, turning to lie on your back and stare at the ceiling.
Emptiness. And even more anxiety. Amazing combo. And all because of that dyed blonde lanky bastard with eyes too blue and jaw too sharp. Trust you to fall for the unattainable.
“It was him, wasn’t it?”
“Yep,” you glanced sideways at your companion with a grimace, “He called to give me a summary of the events, so to speak” that part still did not make sense, but who were you to argue.
Wheeler let out a low hum, making you face her. You did not like the suspicious expression on her face. But you were too tired to ask. Ignorance is our ammunition and all that. You resumed the summary with a heart even heavier:
“And then he asked how I am, and I just…” you trailed off, giving in to the feelings, “Christ, I’ve no clue how I’m supposed to meet him tomorrow”
Pathetic, again. You half expected Wheeler to slap you for being an annoying, lovesick teenager pining after her crush. Which you were, in all fairness. But instead, you felt a hand pat your arm reassuringly.
“You’ll manage” glancing up, you met the warm smile of your companion, “You’re strong” before you could argue, she added, “And from what I’ve heard, you two really should talk, so maybe the opportunity will come up” it was her turn to shrug, wandering off to prepare the second cot.
“I suppose” that sounded like a nightmare “Got news for you and Ives, by the way”
You were hoping she will make you go to the squad leader right this moment. That would be a perfect distraction.
“Those can wait till tomorrow, get some sleep”
Well, fuck.
*** The nerves and increasing panic only caught up with you in the containers on the way to the icebreaker. The morning was spent in that blissful motion you needed so badly. You passed on the information to squad leaders, packed up, and got ready for the journey, which commenced after you got a call from the ship’s captain. The time spent on board was too short for your liking. Gripping the duffel back with your belongings, you focused on breathing slowly while the chinook approached the icebreaker, preparing to drop the containers and fly off. Somehow, the rattling and the cramped space of the metal box were almost comforting. No one could hurt you there. There was no one to escape and to hide from. But, of course, that too was over too soon. As the container touched the ground with a thud, making you all jump up, you only had a moment to clench your jaw. Ives stood up and opened the door as you all formed a proper formation for disembarking. The cold, piercing light of the sun hit you in the face as the wind tangled the cord connecting your oxygen tank to the mask. One look around assured you of two things – you would have to get accustomed to the sight of sea and sky for miles and that there was no hiding from Neil.
He was there, stood right next to TP, awaiting your arrival. It took you a moment to get accustomed to his military get-up. The black windbreaker zipped up, cargo pants with armour pads on the knees, and heavy boots. Hair windswept, falling into his eyes, making you want nothing but to brush it away. Brilliant. And naturally, he noticed you as well, eyes looking over your frame and face, searching for something. You did wonder whether he found it. To distract yourself, your gaze slipped over to look at TP. Still suspicious and serious. But at least he was not staring at you, trying to see into your soul. And that was enough.
“Welcome aboard” his grim countenance lit up for a second.
After a motion from Ives, you stepped up along with him and Wheeler, joining the two men. You had a proper look around. The rows of containers, rigs, and equipment being stacked in crates, ready for the upcoming battle. Eyeing the accommodation part of the cargo ship, you listened on to the conversation:
“Where exactly are we heading?” Ives’s voice cut straight to the point.
Good question. You glanced back at TP, only to find an enigmatic smile grace his features.
“All in the right time,” he responded, and you could see Neil grimace.
Somehow seeing him that frustrated did not cause any satisfaction. Quite the contrary even. To your inner horror, his eyes met yours right then. Curiously considering, before he reached out a hand:
“It’s good to see you” that was undoubtedly directed at you.
The empty pleasantry hurt like a bitch. But, with four pairs of eyes set on you, there was no choice but to accept the outstretched hand. Swallowing down the panic, you let his hand envelope yours in the casual handshake. Even that amount of contact was enough to make you spiral. Especially with how his thumb brushed over your knuckles. The eyes never leaving yours, urging you to understand something. What you had no clue. The moment was over before you realised, and Neil directed the next sentiment at your companions.
“All of you” they exchanged the handshakes while you stared on.
Once that was done, TP directed your attention towards the accommodation again:
“We’ll show you what’s where” he started walking, giving the directions on the go, “Let everyone else disembark in the meantime”
At least he was more like himself.
You followed them, taking in all the shown spaces. The lower part was occupied by the turnstile and potential training spaces. As you passed, you could hear Ives making arrangements for the troops to start sparing and shooting practice as soon as possible. Next, there were bunk beds and sleeping spaces for everyone. Rows upon rows of small bunks, only privacy was a curtain separating the mattress from the outside world. But it had to do, of course. As you moved up past the machinery, the kitchen, and the common spaces, you have been led to an airlocked corridor near the bridge.
“That’s where we sleep” TP waved a hand in the general direction of the many doors in the corridor.
There was a total of four cabins and a bathroom. Your gaze settled on Neil again. Entirely on its own accord. He shifted hesitantly before directing a question at the squad leader:
“Ives, do you guys want to stay with the troops?”
You could see the emotions bubbling under the nonchalant expression. It was not the usual charming, suave Neil you have met. Now there was uncertainty, doubt, and insecurity. As though he suddenly lost all the confidence and was trying to piece himself together. You did wonder what made him hurt that much.
“Yeah, that’s better for the morals,” Ives replied, ending your strange thoughts.
“As you wish,” Neil grinned in response, before glancing at TP, “I’ll go check on Kat”
Before anyone could respond, he disappeared down the corridor. Interesting. Could it be that he too was bothered by what was going on? Difficult to imagine but plausible.
“Those are yours, Y/N” the mention of your name made you look up.
TP was staring at you inquisitively, a hand on a doorknob, awaiting a reaction. That was unexpected. As much as the fact that he used your name. And did not look that pissed off anymore. You did wonder what was said during their journey back to Oslo. How much did he know?
“I thought I’ll be with the rest of the squad” you stared back quizzically.
“Neil made sure you got your own space” TP shrugged as though it was the most obvious thing in the world.
What the hell. Was that why he so casually run off?
“How very kind of him,” you muttered, feeling the gazes of everyone else burning on your skin.
Damn people and their curiosity.
“He’s down the corridor, if-” oh fuck no.
“Thanks,” you cut off the boss with the voice as cold as ice.
He understood, nodding curtly. Thank god. It was enough to know that Neil was close. You did not need the specifics. Or the insinuations behind the information. It did not matter; you would not be visiting him any time soon. Or ever.
*** You have managed to avoid meeting Neil throughout the day. It was busy, filled with getting settled aboard the icebreaker and planning what the next days are going to hold. You were not told what your destination was, but you had a clue Ives knew. That was… disappointing. You have happily missed the mealtime, choosing to hide in the 2 x 3 metres of space that was your cabin. The small bed, one round window, tiny bedside cabinet, and a chair were all you could depend on for the next eight days. Not bad. You were intent on staying there for as long as possible, avoiding the outside unless absolutely necessary. It was a good plan until, at around 1 am, your stomach started rumbling. Supposedly a whole day on just breakfast was bound to end like this. But you were still outraged. Because that meant going out. And here there be monsters. Sighing heavily, you put on the shoes and a jacket and warily stepped into the corridor. Silence. Cold metal walls and floors, deep dark shadows. With the official meeting taking place the next morning, you were hoping everyone was asleep. Or doing whatever people did at night.
Sealing the airlock in the small kitchen, you took off the oxygen mask and placed it on the small table. The galley was equipped with the necessary stuff, including a large, packed fridge, a kettle, sink, and some cabinets filled with non-perishable foods. The eerie silence was almost deafening, so you turned the kettle on, creating background noise. Going through the arsenal, you chose to prepare a sandwich and a tea and then promptly run away to your room. Just in case. As you set to work, confidence grew. Maybe you got lucky. You were in the middle of cutting the bread roll in half when the unmistakable sound of the zipper rung out. Fuck.
“… Hey,” of course.
Your hand slipped, knife slicing open the skin on your pointer finger. Blood dripping onto the counter.
“Shit!” you cursed and dropped the knife, bringing the injured finger to your mouth.
As the coppery taste dissolved on your tongue, you risked turning around to face the intruder. That was mistake number one. Neil was staring at you with concern etched onto his face. Lips pursed; brows furrowed. Hair ruffled as though he has been outside for an extended period of time. The moment your eyes met his, you felt trapped. There was nowhere to go. Just you and him, in 7 square metres. Bloody perfect. His gaze flitted between you and your wounded hand, hesitating and calculating. It was obvious, even to him.
“Are you alright?” the strange unfamiliarity took you by surprise.
You could see the conflict plain as day. Glancing at the cut, you were relieved to see that it was rather shallow, albeit still bleeding significantly. Turning on the tap to rinse it, you replied:
“Yep,” that simple.
And yet not at all. Neil edged closer, stopping right next to you but preserving a meter of space. Turning off the water, you looked up at him curiously. Too close. The blue threatened to drown you if you were not careful. He reached out a hand with fingers trembling slightly. You were frozen in the spot, seeing but unable to react, as he took another step forward.
“Show me-” the moment his skin made contact with yours, the paralysis disappeared.
God no. You jumped back, hitting the edge of the counter with your back. A dull throbbing was nothing compared to the hammering heart and the searing pain in your chest. His eyes widened in shock. Your reaction was evidently unexpected.
“No, that won’t be necessary” finding the voice again, you mustered a tight-lipped smile.
If this were to work, you had to avoid any physical contact. Somehow you knew that if he touched you, the resolve would begin to crumble. That could not happen. You took a deep breath and focused back on the task. The tension was of the knife-cutting kind. Swallowing you both in despair. In the corner of your eye, you could see Neil hesitate, watching you closely. Then he must have made up his mind, for he opened the fridge and started searching for something. After another minute of near-fatal awkwardness, you spoke up:
“Have you been outside?” a simple question dropped in an almost neutral tone.
Fitting perfectly between strokes of the butter knife on the roll. Small talk, easy enough, right?
“Yeah, I’ve watched the stars” Neil took out bread and settled by you at the counter “The sky’s pretty clear tonight” he glanced at you for a second, an enigmatic look on his face.
The walls were up. Back to pretending.
“Mhmm,” you nodded, praying to every god in the universe for help.
Thankfully, one must have listened… Well, sort of.
“You’ve missed the meal earlier,” he noticed while turning on the toaster.
Of course, he would. Forcing your hands to stay steady as you sliced up the tomato, you thought of a good enough answer. Because the truth would not do.
“Just didn’t feel like it” you shrugged, avoiding his eyes.
But he was staring. Leaning by the counter, watching you closely. You felt that this was it when it came to a casual conversation between you.
“But now you do?” this next question sounded differently.
There was a suspicious edge to his voice that you knew would be reflected in his eyes. Your acting was not good enough for this. Swallowing down the rising discomfort, you faced him and steeled your features.
“Yes,” that should suffice.
But then, seeing him attempt psychoanalysis through the means of staring, you chose honesty.
“I was hoping I won’t meet anyone around here this late,” you added and met his gaze.
A challenge. Tell me how I’m wrong, kind of thing. The truth he so clearly wanted. And Neil took it without hesitation.
“Anyone? Or just me?” eyes narrowed; lips curled into a smirk you did not like.
What the fuck? You felt a rush of anger. He maybe was right. But that did not mean he was allowed to question you. To make claims as clear as this.
“What’s your point?” you arched an eyebrow, forcing the most neutral of tones.
A shadow passed through his face, a hint of uncertainty. But as soon as you noticed it, it was gone. He shook his head with an almost imperceptible smile.
“No matter” waving his hand dismissively, he reached for the kettle.
Too close again. His arm brushed against yours as he filled in both of your mugs with the boiling water. You glared at that but chose to bite back the comment. At least he was being useful…
“You were rather quiet earlier...” Neil’s voice brought you back to the present moment.
Your head snapped up, meeting his intense stare. What? From the curiosity in his eyes, you deduced that he was waiting for an answer to that. You were sure to deliver.
“If you wanted me to publicly declare my hatred for you, then I’m sorry to disappoint,” shrugging, you took satisfaction in the way his eyes widened “Are you using that?” pointing at the container with sugar, you observed him a little longer.
Neil seemed less confident now. His tense posture and clenched jaw showed as much. Or the fact that suddenly he was not as eager to stare at you. Maybe that was a win. The only response you got was a head nod for ‘no’. But before you could celebrate the unlikely victory, he spoke again:
“Last time we talked, you said something a little different” there was that suspicious edge again.
You did not dare meet his eyes. The casual way in which he referred to the event made your blood boil. Because that was all the evidence you needed to confirm the worst-case assumptions: he did not care. To Neil, all this was a passing thing, something you can let go of when it becomes inconvenient. Trust you to give your heart to someone like that. The thought gave you an idea. What was said could not be unsaid, but…
“Yeah, but I thought about it, and... I take it back” once the words left your mouth, you felt a stronger surge of fury.
It only got worse when you caught a glimpse of hurt in the depths of his eyes. It was hidden well but still there.
“What?” Neil swallowed hard.
You could see that he did not expect that from you. Good. Perhaps it was a lie, but who was to say you had to be honest. After all, he was not, as it turned out. The look of confusion on his face made you turn up the emotions, throwing in irritability to the mix.
“I know you can be dense, but I’m sure you understood it well enough. I take back what I said in Tallinn” no effort was needed to be mean.
Just as easy as it was to lie. Perhaps too easy even. Out of curiosity, you watched him absorb what you said. At first, Neil’s lips parted a little as though he was holding in a gasp. Then he tensed, and eyebrows furrowed. That was denial. It was replaced with a painfully fake smile. One that did not reach his eyes. In summary, Neil did not seem relieved by what you said. Nor did he seem happy about it. Tough luck.
“Feelings change, huh?” nonchalantly he eyed you as though trying to find anything amiss.
The intensity of his gaze felt as though the fire was burning your skin. Suddenly the casual outfit seemed inadequate. Almost nonexistent in how he could see right through it. It took you a moment to shook it off. To remember that this was a duel, and you could still win. But only if you did not allow him to get too close.
“No. People do” you shrugged and went back to finishing the tea.
Just like that. A silence. And then the sound of a throat being cleared awkwardly:
“What are you trying to say?” unsure and shocked.
The metaphorical penny dropped. You could spare him the torture.
“You know,” putting away the teaspoon with a clink you eyed the toaster, “You might want to take that toast out unless you fancy eating carbon”
“Thanks,” Neil offered you a tight-lipped smile before he attended the burned toast.
You felt like that was the perfect metaphor for the state of your relationship. Or whatever the fuck was it. You were not sure what made you stay then. The walk back to your room did not seem convenient anymore. And the table was right there… It was rather risky, but then it was hard to deny yourself the pleasure. However questionable it may be. He was still your Neil, and his presence felt like the home you have desperately missed. Fortune favours the brave, or whatever. Ignoring his surprised look, you set down the plate and the mug and sat down at the narrow table. You did not have to wait long for a question:
“Do you mind if I stay?” the uncertainty in his voice made you look up.
Sure enough, the blue eyes were fixed on you with reluctance. As though he did not expect you to allow him that much. But then… why not? Perhaps it was the masochistic tendencies speaking.
“Suit yourself” you offered him the tiniest of smiles and focused on finally eating the carefully prepared sandwiches.
The ones you paid in blood and nerves for. At least they were good. After another moment, Neil joined, taking his seat opposite you. You could not help but snicker at the blackened toasts gracing his plate.
For a few minutes, you ate in silence, stealing glances at each other as though they were a crime. For you, they almost felt like it. His blonde hair (fake, as you had to remind yourself) reflected the fluorescents, giving him that angelic look that used to draw you in. It still did as much, only now it was paired with desperation everybody feels when faced with the unattainable. The forbidden fruit. Unable to stop yourself, you glanced at his lips then. The pull was still there, threatening to come crashing down and leave you gasping for air. But you could not give in.
“You saw us” as though Neil could read your mind, he spoke up, “Back at the airport, with Kat,” adding, he met your gaze.
You could tell that this was another attempt at small talk of sorts. You wondered how long this would take until another argument could begin to brew.
“Yeah,” nodding, you took a sip of the tea.
That was all he needed. The moment still sometimes haunted you. The look in his eyes when Neil saw you in Oslo. Now it all made more sense. The shock and apprehension. You were probably the last person he wanted to see back then.
“Why you’ve never said anything?” the question took you by surprise.
Neil, of all people, should know better. You took a moment to gather the thoughts, staring back into those eyes that seemed to see right through you.
“I just followed your favourite logic” upon his confused expression, you explained, “What’s happened-”
“-Happened” he grinned; too proud “You know me well”
His hand that was resting by the mug twitched as though he wanted to reach out. You could not tear your eyes away from it, battling the most primal of instincts that just wanted to touch him. Ignoring the urge, you finished the tea and muttered the answer:
“I thought I do”
It was another of those things that were too easy to tell him. Even though you were being vulnerable through admitting it. Most rules were broken already.
“But?”
You stood up, avoiding the desire to look him in the eye. Anything to make this easier. Enough. You got what you wanted, but now it was time to leave. To cut this torture short for you both.
“If Tallinn taught me anything is that I don’t know you at all. Not the real you, anyway” you rinsed the dishes and moved to the door “Now, excuse me-”
Neil moved fast. Before you could realise he stood up, his hand was wrapped around your arm, making escape impossible. Bewildered by the feelings rushing in all at once, you met his eyes. Even through the two layers of clothing, his touch was burning you. A reminder of all that you have lost. The immeasurable depth of expression in Neil’s face was not helping. You could discern determination, worry, and panic, among others. As though only now he has realised the extent of the damage.
“I never lied to you. Not even once” his grip tightened as he took a step forward.
Your back hit the wall, trapping you between him and the cold metal.
“Should I congratulate you?” stifling the raising panic, you stared up at him with defiance.
It worked.
“…Jesus,” Neil swallowed hard, unable to hide the exasperation, “Why are you like this?”
With the newly found position, you could easily judge his state of mind. He was annoyed, angry even. And that was triggering. Even though the proximity was slowly hazing your mind, proposing scenarios that could never happen. Fuck. You took a deep breath to calm down. To ignore how it felt to have someone look at you like this. Not platonically.
“If you need to ask, I think there’s no point in dragging this conversation any longer” finding your voice again you made sure to turn up the notch “I’d rather go to sleep than get rejected again” the coldness came out of nowhere.
But it was helpful. He did not expect that. The hand on your arm relaxed a little.
“I never rejected you” crease between his eyebrows deepened.
Right. Unable to stop the rising bitterness, you scoffed in his face. This was the opportunity to win the battle and get away before you could fuck it up even worse.
“You’re right,” you relished in the utter confusion visible “You did something worse. But I’m really not in the mood to argue, so… please let me go” gingerly, you placed your hand on his chest with the intent to push him away.
That was another mistake. Neil covered your palm with his, making you shudder. That was enough to make everything worse. Because there was no way of stopping the thoughts. Of ignoring the want, you tried to suppress for the past week. With him this close, touching you as though he meant it, you soon realised how bad it was. There was no way of getting rid of the feelings.
“I’m worried about you. You don’t look well” he broke the tense silence, forcing you to look up.
As if. His face was too striking. With blood pounding in your ears, you made another attempt at freeing yourself by trying to push him away.
“I don’t need your sympathy” taking a step forwards you hoped he would back off.
He did not. The concern visible in his blue eyes was overwhelming any last bit of sanity. All that was left did not make any sense. For a second, you wanted nothing but to have an innocent passerby interrupt you. The embarrassment could be worth it.
“I’m pretty sure you haven’t slept in days. And I-”
Neil was too close. The hand that was wrapped around your arm slid down to your waist while the other wandered up, fingers ghosting your neck. You closed your eyes for a split second, calming down the racing thoughts. This could not happen.
“Neil, stop,” shaking off the paralysis, you cupped his cheek “You can’t help me. So, let’s just leave it,” pouring in all the despair into your gaze, you met his eyes.
What you saw reflected was startling. You have never seen him that confused.
“I…” he faltered, losing the momentum that was there a second ago.
You were winning. But there was no satisfaction. Just the overwhelming despair, tempting you to make use of the predicament. Just this once. It was too easy to let your fingers caress his jaw, feeling the two-day stubble he did not bother shaving off. The disorientation in his eyes deepened as he stared at you with amazement. Speechless, frozen in the moment that seemed endless. As you brushed the pad of your thumb over his lips, Neil inhaled sharply, waking up from the reverie. His grip on your waist tightened, drawing you even closer. The expression in his eyes shifted. Pupils darkened as want took over the reason. You could feel yourself slipping down the slippery slope. Risking too much for god knows what. Or why. The air he breathed out ghosted your lips, an offer of what you could have. The exact same thing you have missed more than anything else. As if guided by the gravity itself, you leaned in, your noses brushing. Mere two inches of space. It would be so easy…
“If you don’t love me, then what is this?” Neil asked, breaking the silence and putting on another enigmatic smile.
The audacity of the question felt like a punch in the gut. That was the harsh wake-up call. Your salvation.
“Whatever it was for you in Tallinn,” you bit back, letting the anger seep into your answer “Let me go” the ice-cold tone was a perfect touch.
Neil took one last long look over your face before he stepped back, releasing you. The visible disappointment made you even angrier. Because how did he dare? What even was this? You had no clue. Only that you were right about touches being forbidden from now on.
“As you wish,” the pleasantry was thrown in your face with a mocking intonation.
You wanted nothing but to slap him. Punch him, make him bleed and hurt like you were. But that would be unbecoming for someone like you. And so, you straightened your back, grabbed the mask, and fixed it over your mouth and nose without as much as a glance in his direction. Enough now.
“See you at the meeting tomorrow” throwing the goodbye over your shoulder you unzipped the airlock.
“Good night” was the last thing you heard upon the exit from the galley.
Jesus Christ. Finally, there was air to breathe.
*** That night you did not get much sleep either, tossing and turning on the narrow bed, unable to make your brain shut up. It was hard not to come up with all the possible what-ifs. Not to wonder what could have happened should Neil stayed silent, and you were to continue. To let yourself get lost in him like you used to. And all of those questions were only amplified by the fact that you chose to sleep in the stolen sweater. Why? You had no clue. Like many things, even your brain stopped making sense a long time ago. And so, when your phone alarm finally rang, you could only accept the fate and grudgingly get up. The dark circles were hard to hide. Or the way your shoulders sagged at the mere idea of facing everyone else. But there was no other way. You got dressed in the most practical outfit and left the cabin with the heart hammering in your chest. All the courage accepted. The mere idea of facing Neil made your stomach turn. That vouched for an amazing start indeed.
The official meeting was supposed to take place at 9:00 on the indoor bridge, and as far you knew the purpose was to officially brief you and the squad. You followed the half-remembered directions, by miracle arriving at the airlock leading to a lounge-like space with sofas, a table with ten chairs, and panoramic windows proving splendid view of the inverted waves and occasional seagulls. It seemed like you were the first one to arrive. Taking a longer look to stare at the horizon, you jumped up at the sound of a throat being cleared. Not alone then…
“Good morning” tall blonde woman stood up from her position on the sofa.
Kat. The drama of the previous night almost made you forget about her. But there is only so long you can run away from reality. The anxiety spike made you take a deep breath before you could respond.
“Hi,” frowning at the awkwardness of the tone, you flashed her an apologetic smile “Sorry to interrupt if you’ve-”
“No, no, it’s okay,” she waved a hand dismissively and settled back on the cushions “I’ve just been watching the birds really. Still can’t get used to them” the thoughtful look in her eyes made you smile.
She could not be older than Neil. Tall and slender, dressed in practical military clothes as everyone else, she seemed so different from the woman you saw in Tallinn, bleeding and on the verge of death. Now there was steely confidence to her, intangible yet present. Tentatively, you joined her on the sofa, never taking your eyes off the horizon.
“It takes a while. The first time I got inverted, I panicked the moment I saw a pigeon flying backwards” you did not know where the honesty came from.
Or why you shared the story. But the bewildered smile that split Kat’s face was a good enough reward.
“That sounds horrendous” she choked back a laugh, meeting your gaze with sparkling blue eyes.
“It was cooing too” you added with the conspiratorial whisper, awaiting a response, barely concealing a giggle that was rising in your throat.
“Good God” she grinned in your direction.
Maybe there was some goodness in the universe…
“Yeah, basically” returning the smile, you reached out a hand “Sorry we’ve never got introduced, I’m Y/N”
“Kat” she shook your palm, smiling sympathetically “It’s nice to meet you. Are you part of the squad?”
“Well, sort of… I don’t really know what’s my role is in all this” shrugging helplessly, you allowed more honesty to permeate the sentence “But I’m too involved to ask questions”
“I know the feeling well” you knew the quiet resignation in her gaze from the reflection in the mirror.
As you opened your mouth to ask a question, a zip on the airlock made you freeze. Peace was not an available commodity these days.
“Good morning ladies” Neil’s voice rung out in the room as he stepped into the view.
The fake cheeriness looked out of place on his sombre face. After a quick scan, you could tell that he too has not slept well. And that he was trying his hardest to appear alright when he was everything but. A tell-tale sign was the untied shoelace and uncombed hair sticking out in every direction. Details easily missed by everyone but you. There was nothing you could do with that information. It felt like another tiny but painful stab straight into your battered heart. You did wonder how many more could you handle.
“Did you get a good rest?” Kat’s innocent question brought you back to the moment.
“Not quite” Neil grimaced slightly as his eyes slipped over onto you for a fraction of a second.
That was enough to make Kat notice. You were sure of it. Your cheeks reddened on their own accord, and you returned Neil’s tight-lipped smile. A finishing touch to the act.
The awkward silence that followed was deafening. Neil sat by the table, tapping his foot unconsciously. Kat seemed perplexed, glancing at you both, trying to understand. You would not even know how to explain it if she asked. Suddenly, a text alert pierced the silence, making you jump up. The device buzzed in the pocket of your pullover. With a shaking hand, you retrieved the phone and glanced at the display. TP.
“Fuck” you let out a curse as your eyes flitted over the text.
Passwords. To what? Hell knows.
“What is it?” Neil stood up and was at your side in a second.
You looked up, straight into his eyes. Whatever happened did not matter now. You both understood that.
“I don’t know…” biting down on your lip, you scanned the room, settling on a computer lying on the table, “Give me that laptop. Please” you gestured towards the device, urging him to catch up.
He did. Using those long legs that you always admired, he crossed the room in no time and handed you the laptop. Your hands were trembling as you typed in the passcodes and entered the folder where files from TP always appeared. It certainly did not help that Neil has perched on the armrest of the sofa and was looking over your shoulder. Or that his hand landed on the nape of your neck as he adjusted in the strange position. You swallowed hard, focused on finding the newest folder. Surely enough it was there. Password protected. You typed in the combination of letters and numbers from the text message and held your breath as the system loaded. A second later, you were staring at several files that appeared on the screen. Double-clicking on the first pdf, you opened up a map of a location.
“Is that…” Neil’s whisper came from right over your ear.
Breath ghosting over your neck, making you shiver. But there were more important matters to attend to. Shaking off the feeling, your eyes scanned the map.
“Stalsk-12” you read out loud, “I think this is our destination. TP sent those so we know what to expect” looking at Neil again, you were struck by the proximity.
He nodded, holding your gaze intently. You could see that he was processing what you said and all the implications. What the unexpected files could mean for you. And what were the critical steps to be taken.
“What do you mean he sent those? He’s-” Kat’s confused question made you both snap out of it.
It was terrifyingly easy to forget people other than Neil existed. Another issue to add to your list.
“I’m sorry, I really can’t explain it” you gave Kat the most regretful of smiles and opened a different file.
This one was a list of tips in a way. A short letter with instructions, addressed to you alone. Aware of the tension pervading the room, you scanned it, catching onto the things he mentioned. A tunnel leading to the dead-drop. Hypocenter in the middle of the Soviet secret city. Inverted and normal mercenaries. It sounded like something taken out of an action film. But, supposedly, that was your reality now.
“Anything good?” Neil chimed in, unable to control the anticipation.
You glanced at him again, catching the way he was staring at you rather than at the screen. The way the early morning sun reflected off his profile was tragic. The hair shone like rays of sunlight. The long eyelashes framed his eyes, making the blue stand out even more. Fucking masterpiece. He met your gaze warily, and his brows furrowed even more. That was the cue to answer his question. And to stop staring.
“He’s saying that the most crucial bit will be the lock leading to the dead-drop,” you explained, highlighting the line in the doc “And is sending you his regards,” adding, you gave Neil a small smile.
They were there alright. A final line, telling you to make sure he stays sane and alive. Worrying remark, but you were afraid the boss miscalculated your influence upon the blonde bastard. Maybe he was wrong about some things? Just as the man in question opened his mouth again, someone else entered the bridge, accompanied by the sound of heavy boots and puffs of air from the oxygen masks.
“Who’s saying what?” TP’s question made you frown as the man himself stepped into the room.
Of course, he’d hear that. Now came the dilemma you never knew you would have to face – how to tell your boss you have received information from his future, dead self? And how to make him believe you?
“We’ve got intel. About where we’re heading,” you were saved from answering the question by Neil, who stood up and faced the boss “It’s Siberia, isn’t it?”
Judging by the palpable shock and irritation on TP’s face, it was, in fact, Siberia.
“Who told you that?” the offensive edge to his voice felt like a flashback to Tallinn and the turnstile.
You would rather avoid a repetition of that. Standing up, you took a deep breath. Before anyone else could break-in, you spoke up:
“A very reliable source” when TP’s gaze settled on you, you shrugged.
Quiet confidence, right? A passing shadow of suspicion was not the most encouraging of signs.
“Reliable to who?” his gaze flitted between you and Neil.
Only now you realised how close you were standing to him. Your elbows brushed as you tried to think of an answer. Anything to win the case.
“All of us” Neil’s simple response made you look up at him.
His gaze was fixed on TP with adamant resolve. You felt like this was not the same man who had let his friend pin him to the wall and interrogate him in the most brutal of fashions. The boss sighed and looked at you again.
“How did you get it?”
Right…
“… password protected files” the half-truth felt like the worst of lies.
“From whom?” he pressed, all of the intensity of the dark stare on you.
You could only offer him another shrug and a remorseful look on your face. The scowl you got in response was concerning. But you could not give in.
“I know it sounds crazy, but it’s the best piece of information we could get. We’ve got terrain plans and intel about the dead-drop. Maybe with this, we can make it work” taking a step forwards, you hoped he can see the desperation in your eyes, “All you have to do is trust me” the addition felt necessary, even if hard to be spoken out loud.
The frown on TP’s face deepened as he sighed heavily.
“Bloody hell…” he glanced at the blonde man again, “Neil, what are you thinking?”
Only now you could feel how fast your heart has been beating. Or that sometime within the last few minutes, you have started to tremble.
“I trust her. With my life” Neil delivered the admission with the most neutral of tones.
Fuck. The heartbeat stumbled and then kicked back into action at twice the speed. Unable to stop yourself, you turned around to face him. Sure enough, he met your gaze with certainty. As though that was obvious. Well, maybe to him…
“And the fate of the world too,” he added after a beat, clearly highlighting what mattered more.
Another thing that did not make sense. You made sure he could see the confusion in your eyes as you gave him a formal nod. It was a public setting after all, and you need not make a scene in front of Kat and TP.  But at least you had support in your fight, and that was perhaps most important right now.
“This intel is all we’ve got. We might as well make use of it,” Neil summarized, taking that step closer to you again.
You both faced the boss, taking concerning amounts of confidence from simply being able to do it together. You could see the internal battle on TP’s face. Worry, uncertainty, suspicion, conflict, trust…? Finally, he closed his eyes and exhaled slowly. When he looked at you again, you could tell that it was done. Only…
“If it backfires…” the unspoken hint of consequences if something went terribly wrong.
You just had to make sure it would not. Easy enough…right?
“If it does, then we’ll worry. For now, let’s get to work” Neil waved his hand dismissively, a rare genuine smile brightening up his face “The stage is yours,” tentatively, he placed his hand on your back, giving you a light push.
Permission to take over. Support and the inability to keep his hands off you. Enough to make you consider jumping off the afterdeck into the freezing depths of the Barents Sea. Because even that was better than approximately a week more of this. But the seals would have to wait. The blue eyes were fixed on you with a glimmer that seemed too affectionate for the state of the affairs. Let’s wipe it off with the best weapon available – the crushing weight of reality. You took a deep breath and began the explanation.

We've Got Tonight - Ch 3
Tumblr media
Summary: “It’s not your job to do this, Andy. You make people happy. I was in the diner all of ten minutes, and you knew exactly how to get me to smile. You do normal, real things like garden and sing karaoke. Saving the world is my job, Sam’s job. Sometimes it’s even Cas’s job, but it’s not yours.”
Inspired by Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight”
Warnings: Major Character Death, More Major Character Deaths (sort of?), higher than show level violence, blood, light smutting, language, demons, apocalypse, inferred suicide, cult activity.
18+ ONLY, MINORS DO NOT PROCEED
Author’s Note: This story is set hazily around season 8. Just squint a little, and it’ll settle in somewhere. I wrote this story after certain big revelations in the show, but before other big ones; you’ll most likely be able to tell which. I play with time a bit in the story itself, so if things seem out of order, they are. Hopefully, by the end, all the pieces will fit together.
What the hell, let’s give it a shot.

We’ve Got Tonight
Chapter 3
One month is not enough time to get used to nights in the bunker, she thinks as she stares at the back of Dean’s door. It’s too sterile, too unnatural, with the quiet permeating every crevice and recess.
There must be some sort of muffling spell or noise cancellation technology… or maybe just really good insulation. She’s used to the chatter of customers, the ding of the door chime, the clatter of plates, and the sloshing of the dishwasher. She’s never had to listen to herself think this much before, and she freely admits she is not a fan.
It’s been about four hours since Dean stormed out. “I’m done,” he said, but she doubts she’ll have to wait much longer. Those last words he shouted before Castiel came in, the way he gripped her and she had to force herself not to cling right back, tells her they aren’t finished, either with their argument or each other.
Muffled footsteps, the only sound besides her heart beat and non-stop internal monologue, let her know moments before the doorknob turns that Dean is back. The door swings open, not with the angry force she’s expecting, but with the same weary resignation that bows his shoulders as he steps into his room and shrugs off his jacket.
His eyes meet hers for an eternity, then he deliberately takes two more steps forward and closes the door firmly behind him.
She’s in his arms without a moment’s hesitation, her mouth on his, devouring him with every bit of desperation she possesses. He tastes of scotch, and she can picture him sitting despondently at the local watering hole, glaring balefully at a single glass of liquor for hours.
His arms constrict automatically until she’s equally breathless from his embrace as she is from the kiss. Just when she thinks he may have to physically hold her up, Dean pulls away just far enough to stare hard into her eyes, his expression daring her to challenge his next words.
“We are not done talking. You are going to tell me every detail of your deal, whether you like it or not. And don’t think for a second I’m going to let you go through with it. Choices be damned, Andy, this isn’t just about you anymore, and you know it.”
She refrains from telling him how much of a dad vibe he’s giving off as she shoves his flannel from his shoulders and pulls his face back to hers, clenching a handful of his t-shirt in a death grip.
Neither of them is gentle as they remove clothing and stagger their way to his bed; she knows they don’t have the time to be, and he suspects as much but doesn’t say so aloud. Neither is willing to ruin their precious remaining moments together by bringing up something as distasteful as reality. Nails score flesh, fingers bruise limbs, even their lips come away with faint traces of blood from accidental clashes with teeth.
“How long?” he rasps, his lips ghosting over her sternum. Her nails dredge shallow furrows across the backs of his thighs as he pulls back before thrusting hard, driving her into his mattress. “How long have we got?”
She tugs his mouth down to her breast, hissing as his teeth scrape and tug. Her fingers thread into his hair, holding him in place, silently willing him to let the subject go. She can’t answer him. She’s had a month with him, and while she’d rather have something closer to a lifetime, all she’s asking now is two more uninterrupted, untainted hours.
If she tells him, then the shortness of their time becomes real, everything becomes devastatingly real. Here in the bunker that is far too quiet for her own peace of mind, she can pretend the outside world and all it’s insane occultists and apocalypses and demons and deals don’t exist. She can pretend it’s just her and Dean, and nothing else bad is waiting on the other side of the horizon.
And he’d try to stop her. And probably succeed. So, no. She can’t tell him.
It’s some time before both of them are sated enough to lie relatively still. She keeps her back to him, knowing if she looks in his eyes she is liable to spill every bit of information she has left, and she does not want a repeat of the scene from earlier. Once was more than enough.
“I’m waiting, Andy.”
We all have to learn to live with disappointment, hun, she thinks. Aloud, she sighs and pushes herself back until her shoulder blades press against his chest. She’s been cold since they first brought her to the bunker, and his warmth is almost enough to make her forget that she’s chilled to her marrow. She shivers, forcing a partition up in her mind to keep out thoughts of her impending departure. She’s going to wait until he’s asleep, then head out to make the last rendezvous.
Sunrise, Dean, she thinks, despite her best efforts. I’ve got til sunrise. We’ve got less than that.
Luckily, she’s had enough caffeine to give a draft horse the shakes, and he’s running on three hours sleep for the last couple of days, so he should pass out pretty soon. The last thing she needs is the infamous Winchester Interference with her plans.
With the confidence that comes from knowing she’s right at the end of everything, Andy rolls over and pulls Dean’s head down so his cheek rests between her breasts, cradling him like a child and stroking his hair just as she’s longed to do since he strolled into her diner and winked at her over a stack of pancakes. He doesn’t protest, doesn’t even pretend to resist, instead nuzzling deeper in her embrace, and that’s when she really knows she’s wounded him far more deeply than she should have been capable.
“It was only supposed to be a fling,” she remarks to the top of his head as she runs her nails over the base of his skull. He shivers, pulling the blanket over them up to his chin and sliding his arms around her waist. His shoulder lies on her stomach, its weight sitting comfortably against her belly. “The first time I met you, you declared your love for me because I brought you bacon, for God’s sake. At four in the afternoon. You were supposed to be a good time, Dean, one good night, and then ride on out of town like a good boy.”
“You’d already be dead if you hadn’t given me your number,” he points out. For once, his lascivious nature is dormant, and he doesn’t so much as sneak a stray lick or grope, despite his optimal position. She strokes her thumb down the side of his jaw, scrubbing over several days’ worth of stubble that covers his cheeks. He turns his face into her touch, sliding his nose against the sensitive skin under her breast, and then it’s her turn to shiver.
“Andy, before you do anything stupid, anything else stupid, I need to tell you...I need you to know that I...”
“No, you don’t,” she chides, cutting him off before he can choke out any more ill-advised words. She can’t hear them right now, they would break down every barrier and barricade she’s constructed to hold herself together for these last hours. And, anyway, he can’t possibly mean them. They barely know each other. “But you could. I think both of us might have, eventually. So, we have that, at least.”
Her ribs creak at the sudden tightening of his grip, and she squirms until he relents enough to allow her breathing to return to normal.
“It’s not your job to do this, Andy. You make people happy. I was in the diner all of ten minutes, and you knew exactly how to get me to smile. You do normal, real things like garden and sing karaoke. Saving the world is my job, Sam’s job. Sometimes it’s even Cas’s job, but it’s not yours.”
His words end on something that she would never in a thousand years tell him sounds like a crack. She silently strokes the velvety hairs on the back of his neck, waiting for him to finish clearing his throat.
“Don’t try to be the hero; it never works out for anyone involved, even the people you’re trying to save.”
“Don’t start with me, Dean Winchester. Here we are, having a nice moment, and I will not let you ruin the time we have left with arbitrary things like depth and honesty.”
The air system hisses soothingly in the background, but she won’t let herself be soothed. This time left is for him, she’s not fooling herself about that any longer. What does she have left but Dean, anyway? She’s got three, four hours left at the most, and this is how she chooses to spend them.
She rolls once more, pulling Dean underneath her until she lies atop him, flush from collarbone to ankles. He watches her, his face soft and open for once, golden and warm in the dim light of the little bedside lamp. His hands move slowly, reverently, to glide over the curve of her jaw and mouth, and she can feel the faint tremors that run through his hands. She kisses his fingers one at a time before lifting her eyes to his.
“No, you don’t,” she repeats, “But you could.” The world needs the Winchesters around a hell of a lot more than it needs her. And while she might make people happy, saving people and hunting things is the Winchesters’ family business. This is her only chance to make sure they and the world stick around long enough for that to keep happening. ...

Since you do JoJo now, can you do the JoJo’s with a Hispanic s/o like you did a while back? I love my Joestar boys 🥺
Yesss I love my Joestar boys too 🥺
jonathan joestar
Listening to everything you say about your culture. He is so precious.
He’s down for whatever you want to do.
I think he’ll definitely enjoy trying new food. Jonathan will definitely love all of it. From quesadillas to any pork related dish. Favorites are desserts.
Pastel de tres leches is his favorite. Ever since you introduced it to him, Jonathan will try and eat it for dessert almost every day. He’s sad when you scold him for eating it too much.
Jonathan shares the cake with Dio if it’s not made by you. Dio picks up an interest in the cake too. But if the cake is made by you Jonathan will not and I mean not share with anyone. Even with you. Yes, he hogs the cake.
His Spanish is magnificent. He speaks it so fluently, you wouldn’t think he learned it. Finds it every efficient when talking to you and your parents.
If Spanish is the only language you’d know when you meet him, he will help you to learn English.
Dancing intrigues him. It’s different from the ones he knows. He doesn’t master it right away and takes him a bit to get the hang of it.
Brings you una serenata. I’m hella confident he’ll do it. Please Jonathan, bring me una serenata.
Jonathan you’re just so 👩‍🍳💋
Jonathan overall is just 🥰
joseph joestar
Teach him everything.
Don’t leave out a single detail to him. He’s so fascinated with it. He’s like a little kid, kicking his feet while hearing you talk about what you do.
Joseph’s Spanish is “Hola” and “Hola” alone before meeting you. I’m certain he understands Spanish but can’t speak it. So your conversations will be you asking him something in Spanish and him answering in English.
Not the best at dancing, I’d give him a 7/10. He could use some work on his cumbias.
Joseph wants to participate in any cultural activities that he can. He cares about you and doesn’t mind if you come from a different background.
Like we saw with Smokey, Joseph won’t tolerate any crude comments thrown at you. He blows a fuse quicker whenever that happens and it takes a lot to calm him down afterwards.
Joseph praises elotes. He likes the combo of mayo, cheese, and some salsa on it. Could eat three and still want more. He gets very excited whenever you tell him you made elotes.
Adores conchas but his heart belongs to besos. Will ask for a kiss whenever he gets his favorite sweet bread. Probably corny with it too.
Shows your cooking off to Caesar like “Ehe you ain’t got no girl who can cook for you like my baby do.” Caesar I’m here, pls I cook and I clean I just want a ring
jotaro kujo
One thing he will not do is dance. Unlike the rest of the JoJo’s who easily agree on dancing, Jotaro’s answer is always no.
Learning Spanish? He will do it. Eating Hispanic or making food with you? He will do it. Celebrating a holiday with you? He will do it. Dancing? Flat out no.
If you even think about asking him he already read your mind and says no.
After months, he finally gives in and you find out the reason why he always said no.
This man has bad rhythm. Cannot dance to save his life. He definitely practiced in secret (probably with Star Platinum) only to find out he’s ass at dancing. Stepped on your foot every time and you thought you were gonna get bruises.
Either that or he stiff 🧍🏻‍♀️
His Spanish is kind of broken but his effort to communicate pulls through. I’m positive Jotaro finds it easier to express himself to you in Spanish.
Jotaro won’t admit it but he really likes telenovelas. He fakes interest but stands over your shoulder watching it intently. He knows more about it than you do.
Hides a slip of paper where he’s writing down Spanish words, a few things you mentioned you liked, and important days you celebrate.
Part Four Jotaro is still bad at dancing. I must make that comment.
josuke higashikata
His hips don’t lie baby. A+ dancer according to me. This really be yall at the parties —> 💃 🕺
Stiff where? Jotaro wish he had Josuke’s dance moves. Josuke is the dance partner you’ve been searching for.
Love love love and I mean LOVES Selena. Josuke was a fan of her before meeting you. Definitely where he first learned to dance. This makes Josuke a big fan of cumbia.
Ask him to dance. Matter fact, he’ll drag you to your feet to dance. Josuke could dance with you in his room without any music playing and it’s him making up a beat.
Josuke’s downfall? Cannot learn Spanish. His brain just ain’t registering it. He knows the basic greetings. But try and make a full conversation? Josuke doesn’t remember anything.
Whatever you teach him goes out the other ear. Jealous because Koichi and Okuyasu got Spanish in the bag. Rohan be like “Yes I know Spanish.” when he doesn’t just to get on Josuke’s nerves.
He doesn’t understand how you clean with music playing. Josuke thinks you’re a witch because for thirty minutes he’s watched you dance instead of cleaning and once he blinks everything is spotless.
Josuke’s favorite dish is probably pozole. He’ll eat los granitos all day and all that’s left in the pot is the meat. Won’t even let his mom try the full dish. Unlike me, he can eat it for weeks straight.
He feels so honored whenever you tell him your family invited him to a party or even to have dinner.
giorno giovanna
Giorno’s 👏 good 👏 at 👏 everything 👏
Has 👏 no 👏 downfall 👏
He will dance with you if you ask him. Imagine dancing bachata with Giorno 😌 I would like to experience this please. He’s more of a smooth type of dancer.
No stiffness, no mess ups, gets it all after the first try.
Oh to dance with Giorno. A girl can only dream. Giorno will love to dance when it’s the two of you. Maybe he’ll tell you how much he loves you in Italian when dancing. Maybe sprinkle a little Spanish in there too.
Giorno’s not so best dance has to be rancheras. He can make some mistakes when dancing it but not very noticeable to people around. Just to the two of you.
Spanish for Giorno, easy A. Some words are similar in both languages. Learned it without having any troubles.
Like Jonathan, he speaks it so fluently you wouldn’t think he picked it up. Sometimes he’ll find himself slipping a few Spanish words to Bruno. That or he’ll bounce from Italian and Spanish when talking to you.
Flan. Flan is Giorno’s favorite dish and will make it on his own. It took him four times to make it correctly. Each time you were the taste tester and babie was waiting for approval like :) to see if it was good.

WONDERFUL SCHOOL DAYS: MY PRECIOUS RED
CHAPTER 3: SUMMER
Translation: Naru-kun Raws: skyflyinginaction
* Gakuen K (List of Chapters) * Projects & Chapters
"Maybe he knew of your ability."
Totsuka said that one day after the athletic festival. It was a few days after she changed her clothes.
Kusanagi stopped polishing the glass and Yata's eyes widened and he looked at her.
Bar "HOMRA".
An elegant interior. Looking at one of them, at the vintage jukebox, he takes a breath and doubt Totsuka.
"Eh?!"
"You were talking to King, right? Maybe, I think there is no question."
"That's right?!"
"Yes. I haven't been able to find out everything. That's why..."
Totsuka looked at Kusanagi with a serious look.
"Well, I want to experiment. Kusanagi-san."
"Do it outside."
Totsuka laughed saying "Okay.".
"Kusanagi-san? Won't you see?"
"I have to tend the store. I'm just waiting for the results report."
"Well then everyone, a big place where we don't bother anyone, oh let's go to the riverbank where we played baseball last time."
Everyone takes control and immediately stands up. Also, she was a bit surprised.
Oh, that? Will they all come? Is it my personal cause?
When she wondered and looked at everyone, Yata looked back, "Hey."
"What are you doing? Come on."
"Yata-kun, will you come too? Is it about my ability?"
"Eh?"
Yata grimaced, bowed his head and said, "What are you talking about?"
"Is it because of your ability?"
"Eh? But…"
"Does that mean it's a red club problem?"
"…!"
Involuntarily, her eyes rounded. At the same time, Kusanagi laughed in the background.
Looking back, Kusanagi laughed and shook her hand, saying "Go quickly."
"Don't keep your teammates waiting."
Companions… Those words warmed her heart.
She raised her forehead and followed Yata.
It is enough to walk slowly from the bar "HOMRA". A riverbank where weeds could grow as much as they wanted, except for a small grassy baseball field.
In terms of time, the boys were quiet, perhaps after getting home, with only a few people walking their dogs.
"Now…"
Totsuka looked around his against the setting sun.
He then he said, "So, let's review first.", and he raised his index finger.
"One. When she touched King's flames, she didn't have the ability to manipulate them. She was able to resist Homura's flames, right?"
They all looked at her. She shook her head vertically.
"Yes. It's not hot to touch the flames that everyone creates. But I can't put out the flames. I've been told this several times and I've tried."
Really, many times. She was afraid that other abilities would be activated, so it was a bit dangerous.
When she said that, Totsuka smiled, "That's enough.".
"There are strong and weak abilities, but once you've completed the rite of passage, activating the abilities isn't really that difficult. It seems that some people have a hard time controlling flames. You can probably think that you don't have the ability itself."
"Seriously?"
"Yes. But actually, Konohana-san created a great column of fire in the courtyard. The fire was Yata's flame. That's the second. And the third, it happened even at the athletic festival."
"Eh…?"
Sports festival, but…?
"That's…"
"Finally, that flame that burned the red club's diadem. That wasn't just because of Yata. Yata, you felt that way too, didn't you?"
Everyone's eyes focused on Yata.
Yata made a slightly complicated expression and shook his head.
"That happened right after she called Yata. She didn't realize that her ability had been activated because Yata pounced on the enemy at the right time, right?"
"Yes, not at all."
When she answered him, Totsuka smiled.
"So is. She acted on the flame twice, even though she didn't have the ability to manipulate it. So, I thought. What is the conclusion I came to?"
Totsuka cut his words off there and raised his index finger again.
And he pushed her hand fully towards her.
"Konohana-san."
"Yes."
A small flame ignited on his index finger.
A small flame that was very appropriate to say "light" was like the flame of a candle.
"Please be aware of this flame."
"Eh? Take it into account?"
"Yes. It 'enlarges', 'burns' and is 'strong'. Anyway, let this flame grow. Please think about it."
What does the flame grow?
As they told him, she put her hands together and looked at the flame.
"Increase in size. Make it big?"
She coughed, but nothing happened.
It means, before that, if everyone's eyes were worried, if she looked at him too much, she alone would be worried about it... no, she wouldn't worry about it.
When she thought about it, Suoh, who was sitting alone on the bench, stood up and relaxed in front of her.
The moment she raised her face, his big hand blocked her view.
"Eh? Ah..."
"Don't watch it. Focus on it."
A low voice commanded in her ear.
She took a breath and her eyes widened.
"Do you remember how Totsuka makes the flame? That's what you saw earlier. Remember it. Draw it in your heart."
She closed her eyes as directed, and she remembered that little flame.
"If you can do that, think about it. Imagine it. Light the flame. Can you do it?"
A small flame came to her mind. It was as modest as a candle flame, and quiet.
She tries to make it big strongly. Violently, beautifully. Redder, brighter, and burning.
Like Suoh, was worthy enough to tremble.
Like Yata, flashed so hard she yearned for him.
"Mmm!"
At that moment, there was a scream.
"You can do it."
She hears Suoh's satisfied voice.
At the same time, his hands moved away from her eyes.
"Ah!"
She turned her gaze to Totsuka and took a deep breath.
The flame, which was as small as that of a candle, was now a glow that burned the heavens.
Big, strong, intense and beautiful. A burning flame that glowed red.
Homura's flame like a blazing fire.
"I don't have the power to create a flame like that. Everyone knows it, right?"
Looking delightedly at the pillar of fire, Totsuka smiled.
"This is because Konohana-san made my flame bigger. In other words…"
Totsuka looked around looking at the flames.
"Your ability is the second, the 'amplification'."
"What is the second for Homura?"
Kusanagi put iced tea in front of her and looked at Totsuka.
Since then…
Probably because it was a great column of fire. The people who witnessed the flames rushed forward one after another, and they hurriedly left on the spot. They divided into small groups so that they did not stand out and returned to HOMRA by different routes.
She saw that everyone in the red club at that time, withdrew and moved gently. She was shocked.
She still had a bad idea about that area. If Yata had not retired with her, she was sure that she would have been left alone.
He gently pointed to her right wrist.
He was unscrupulous, but a lot of fun at times like that.
She wondered like Yata, that he's not good with girls, he spoke to her normally and got her out of there.
"Yes. I think the first one is 'superhuman strength'. That's why I broke the grip strength meter."
Totsuka smiled as he made ice cream.
Looking at Totsuka, Kusanagi frowned, "Hmm."
"No. Maybe it's just one? Maybe you're just 'amplifying' your own strength."
Kusanagi's words involuntarily stopped her hand from reaching for the stainless steel cup.
Oh, it's true. There is such a possibility, right?
When she saw Totsuka, he looked up and put his finger on his chin.
"Well, I think it's a different thing. Well, I absolutely can't say."
"Because it's different?"
"That is correct. There are two reasons."
Totsuka held up two fingers.
"One is the difference in the activation conditions."
"Activation conditions?"
"Yes. When the 'amplification' was activated, there was a strong emotion in Konohana-san. She was afraid of Munakata and she cared about Yata. Did you activate it all of a sudden even if you didn't think of anything when you broke the grip strength meter?"
"Uh, surely."
"The other is that there is too much range in 'superhuman strength'."
"Too much range?"
Um, what did that mean?
"I think it's great to break the grip strength meter. You can also break the recording board. I can't do it. But obviously, destroying half the school building or sandwiching the cobblestones in the courtyard is a different level, is it? Don't you think?"
"Of course."
"I thought the former was the activation of the 'superhuman strength' ability. The latter may be the result of 'amplifying' the 'superhuman strength' ability."
"…!"
She widened her eyes at the unexpected words.
"Amplified", "superhuman strength"?"
"That's…"
"It is possible that touching a knife or pinching a stone pavement is another ability, but your body was glowing. But when only "superhuman strength" is activated, "superhuman strength" and "amplification" can be activated together, so I think that there is such a difference in how skills appear."
"I see."
Kusanagi thought that too.
"I think I realized that at the athletic festival. With your power, even I, who only have weak power, can create a column of fire that causes confusion."
She wondered if it was okay for her to be there.
"Konohana-san."
"Yeah... I feel like it's a bit crazy. Your abilities are beyond the person's ability. It's definitely very dangerous because you can't control it right now."
Things that exceed the person's capacity and cause the ability to flee.
Those words surprised her.
It was the same even if there was no talented person around. She revealed another ability of oneself by multiplying it without permission. So what happened at the previous school was an accident.
She realized the danger again and her body trembled.
"Konohana-san."
"Huh? Oh, yeah."
The moment she hugged tightly, Totsuka called out to her carefully.
He lifted her face as if were turned away and tried to reassure her. Totsuka smiled softly, "Okay. Don't tremble."
"Because I am here…"
"……"
"Hey, Yata?"
Totsuka looked back over his shoulder.
Yata, who was sitting in a chair near the couch, noticed and looked at Totsuka, and then looked at her.
"I was telling Konohana-san that we're not afraid of her being here. Yata, you think so too, right?"
"Of course."
Without hesitation, Yata had no problem answering.
"It should be OK."
And his hot eyes went straight through her
"Absolutely, I will protect you."
++++++++++
It was sudden.
"Ha! Kamamoto-kun, summer version!"
The moment she entered the classroom, she was caught by Kukuri, who had been waiting for her, and she was dragged in front of a handsome boy she had never seen.
Brown leather. A soft, lustrous and bright blonde. His eyes, which were melancholy and with slightly sunken corners, were a beautiful sepia color. His nose was smooth, sweet, and well-shaped.
Slim, standout style. The strong confidence, generously exposed collarbone, slim but powerful shoulders and upper arms were very nice.
Who was he?
Before her who was stunned and stiff, Kukuri and Shiro got together and showed his beauty and that line.
She opened her mouth and looked at the handsome boy.
"Kamamoto-kun?! Huh? Hey, really?"
Wait! Because yesterday he was big and now he was normal?
"No matter how much, overnight..."
"Well, I've lost my appetite for the heat since noon yesterday. So when I woke up in the morning…"
(No, no, no, you don't convince me! You can't do it, Kamamoto-kun! It's strange that you lose half your weight in just one night!), she thought.
"Well, what happened to the hairstyle? Kamamoto-kun, you had very short hair."
"Grows fast in summer."
Well again, while it was weird the fact that grew more than 4 inches overnight for that reason, it was absolutely amusing.
"This is the first time for Kuro and Konohana-san. That is amazing."
"Eh? Oh, that's right. Yatogami-kun..."
"But this is already a kind of summer tradition. When Kamamoto loses weight, it means that summer has come."
At Shiro and Kukuri's slow words, she instinctively looked at Yatogami.
No, how about ditching such a great change with "summer tradition"?
Well, ghosts and ghost stories are a summer tradition, and that sentiment may not be wrong.
It means, wasn't everyone worried about it? She was very anxious.
"Hm, Kamamoto-kun. Is your body okay? Aren't you sick?"
"I'm constitutional. It's okay. I don't feel bad; I'm just losing my appetite."
(If this happens even if he can't eat for a day, Kamamoto-kun will disappear if the days when he has no appetite continue.), she thought.
"If so, that's fine, but I'm a little worried."
"Haha, it's fine."
"You won't do anything, right?"
Just in case, she suddenly turned her gaze to Yata, who was sitting by the window.
Yata, who was looking at her with a frustrated appearance, for some reason clicked his tongue at her and turned away from her when he realized that she was looking at him.
"I wonder what I did."
She waved her hand and turned to Kukuri, who left the classroom and involuntarily partied alone.
Yata had been in a bad mood since this morning so he didn't like this, and after all, he could talk about it all day.
Even now, as soon as class ended, he left the classroom with Kamamoto... Should she go home alone? Should she wait as usual?
However, she had no guarantee that Yata would return (on the contrary, he may have already gone), but she stood up with her bag.
With a soft sigh, she left the classroom.
It was a bit strange because they came home together every day.
(What's really going on? Have I done something?), she thought.
If so, it would be difficult to go to HOMRA. She wondered if she should go straight back to the women's dorm today. Or should she go to the library for the final exam?
At that moment when she was wondering and walking alone...
"Konohana-san."
A low, sweet, and very familiar voice echoed down the hall.
She opened her eyes and looked back quickly.
"Can you give me some of your time?"
"Munakata-senpai..."
A pale and refreshing shirt. Light blue bracelet. A shiny and dull saber.
The director of the blue club, Reisi Munakata himself was there, followed by Fushimi and another person behind him.
"I was about to visit the classroom, but I'm glad I didn't get it wrong."
"......"
With a soft smile, but feeling the endless fear, she took a step back.
Then, Fushimi, who saw her, clicked his tongue at her and sighed.
"Hey. I don't know what the red club are telling you..."
"Fushimi-kun."
Munakata stopped Fushimi's words on the way.
And when she looked at him again, he smiled.
"I just want to talk."
She couldn't believe it and shook her head.
"I'm in a hurry, I must go.", she said lying and backed away further.
"Don't say that. I really want to talk. I just want to know what you know about your abilities. That's it. I want to know to handle it quickly when something happens. This is not to put you in danger, much less average students. I promise that I won't force you to do anything."
"......"
"Oh, yeah. What I did was out of order. I should have apologized for it first."
When she quietly returned, Munakata coughed as if he had just realized it and then leaned in slightly.
Naturally, without any ill intention.
She didn't expect him to do that, so she opened her mouth and looked at Munakata in a daze.
"Eh?"
"On the first day of move-in, I apologize for the high pressure attitude in the yard. I'm sorry I told you that you should surrender, as you protected the students in general."
"......"
"I apologize for the fact that Fushimi ran to you at a later date. He acted after thinking about school and you, but as a result, I have given you unnecessary fear. We are so sorry."
Munakatai leaned in even more.
His action was sincere. Suddenly, the fear she felt was relieved.
"Munakata-senpai..."
"If you're busy, let's start over another day. So please let me know."
Perhaps she had an excessive sense of weakness in her initial attitude?
Later when Fushimi spoke to her, she fell, so she thought she was scared.
At that moment, the words were certainly bad, but Fushimi didn't say anything bad. He was only saying the right thing.
Even now. Munakata also said only the right thing.
"Yeah... I feel like it's a bit crazy. Your abilities are beyond the person's ability. It's definitely very dangerous because you can't control it right now."
The words Totsuka said when she elucidated her abilities in that river.
(That's right. My ability is very dangerous.), she thought.
She believed that she definitely should know the school to protect the students.
It was definitely not a mistake.
That's how it is. Not that she wasn't afraid, but she wouldn't run away. She knows, preventable accidents can be harmful.
Taking a deep breath, she took a deep breath and slowly parted her lips.
Suddenly…
"Saya!"
"Ah!"
The window in the adjoining corridor opened with a loud noise.
The moment she rolled her eyes, Yata jumped up and grabbed her hand.
At the same time, he threw her towards him with considerable force.
"Huh? What? Yata-kun?"
But where had he come from? Why was he there?
She was stunned when she started running, as he dragged her away.
"No, Yata-kun!"
"Don't talk! Run!"
"Well, wait! They haven't done anything..."
"Shut up! Run quietly!"
(Huh? Well, wait! They haven't really done anything. I mean, did they just apologize?), she thought.
Lying as she was, she ran down the hall, down the stairs and into the entrance.
Yata finally stopped in front of the shoebox and looked back.
"Come after me... it seems like..."
"Yata-kun..."
"That's it! You're not handling it properly! They don't know what to do!"
"Actually no..."
They were just apologizing to her.
Oh, but she was so happy that he had come for her.
It was warm and happy that someone cared for her and protected her.
She shouldn't be happy. She wondered if she didn't have that qualification... she shouldn't hurt him and make him protect her. Well, she hurt people in her previous school. But the danger of the same thing happening was quite possible, as Munakata said. She was sorry she had escaped from Munakata.
"No, Yata-kun, have you come back...?"
"What? Aren't you going home?"
"Eh? But shortly after class ended..."
"Anna-sensei called me, right? She told me to come after school."
"Ah…"
By the way, she hears him were told that.
"Kamamoto-kun? About that Yata-kun, did you just go to the staff room?"
"Yes."
"So what about Kamamoto-kun?"
As if he had just noticed her words, Yata looked behind her.
"No, leave it."
"Eh? Where? I mean, Yata-kun, where did you come from?"
"As I left the staff room and back to the classroom, I saw you with the blue club."
"ERh?"
It was that?
She looks at Yata confused.
Then, Yata heard that she meets Munakata in the hallway as she left the classroom, and he ran from the staff room to where they were.
When she thought about it, Yata was the one confused this time.
"You did that?"
"That?"
What's that? Did he jump out the window, and he came straight into the hall by jumping out the window?
Wait! The staff lounge and the hall she was in are on the second floor, right?
However, her question seemed unfamiliar to Yata, and he shook his head asking, "What is that?"
"Why…"
"It's parkour. I'm remembering it right now."
"What is parkour?"
"Well, it's a kind of sport. The purpose is' to reach the destination efficiently without interrupting any movement anywhere", Kusanagi-san said."
Was that explanation exactly what he heard from Kusanagi?
"Is it difficult to explain...? Well, it's like flying, running, climbing, balancing and using it effectively to make paths that are not paths."
"Do you want to make a path that is not a path?"
What was that? It sounded interesting.
"So you jump out the window?"
"Yes. Even if you jump off the second floor, you can make a revolution on landing to kill the impact of the landing, and if you think about the angle and kick the wall, you can get to the second floor window as soon as possible. That is my form."
(So literally, you didn't doubt it, you just ran for me? In a place that was a path? To protect me?), she thought.
As a result, Munakata was not trying to hurt her, so it became an excessive defense.
Her face suddenly turned red.
Still, she was happy. She was sorry for Munakata.
But that didn't matter. She was simply impressed. Yata hurried to make his way, for her.
It would be a lie if she said she didn't like that.
"Ah…!"
(Oh, I'm dying of happiness! Yata-kun! I'm so happy I don't know what to do!), she thought.
Perhaps Yata remembered his embarrassment when he turned bright red, blushing and suddenly looking away from her.
And when he rubbed his face roughly, he coughed in embarrassment.
"I'm going home."
++++++++++
A clear blue sky that was high enough to get through.
The clouds were white enough to clump together, the sun was still shining, and the ocean! It was the sea! The great blue sea! Reflecting light on the surface of the water.
Looking at the beautiful mother of life, she was scared because she felt like a tiny person and almost forgot her abilities.
Oh, she couldn't play. Clarifying and controlling her abilities was an urgent task.
But the sea! It was the sea!
Before the end of the term, Kusanagi said: "The guy who got the red dot is excluded from HOMRA. If everyone does the best they can and does not take extra lessons, I will take them to the sea."
The red club was strong when there was a reward! There were no supplementary lessons for everyone. How, even Suoh?
He was talking about "I'll take you to the sea." So she thought it was a day trip, but Kusanagi seemed to be coming to a guest house he knew, so they decided to camp out at sea early in the summer vacation.
When Kukuri heard the story, she was worried, "Will you be okay? You're the only girl.". When she first heard that she would stay, she was a bit surprised.
However, Kusanagi knew about that and said that she had taken her room separately, and everyone was paying careful attention from the planning stage.
As a result, she was excited and happy today.
"That bastard Kamamoto..."
Chitose clicked his tongue when he saw Kamamoto being hit by a reverse wave and flying off.
However, Kamamoto was not the only one who stood out.
"……"
When he frowned, he looked at the white waves that were crashing.
Yata, who usually controls skateboards freely, seemed to be good at surfing, catching waves, and riding horses.
Seeing that figure, several women made a squeaky voice for a while and wondered, "Is it good, right?" "Yes. Good. Let's talk to him."
That... was not very interesting.
That in her way, she didn't care, but it was truly amazing.
"Saya-chan?"
Kusanagi, who had approached her before she was aware, looked at her face in a mischievous way.
"Eh? Ah! Yes?"
"Youth."
"Eh…?"
"Hm, do you want to split a watermelon?"
Kusanagi offered her a blindfold and said, "Saya-chan, let's do it."
"Eh, I?"
"Girls do it while wobbling, it's cute."
When she looked around, Chitose and Dewa were excited.
She thought for a moment, tightened the blindfold and got up.
"So, are you prepared to be defeated by my power?"
Maybe she didn't think so much, they all had a terrifying look at his words.
"It would be nice if the watermelon also kept its shape... Sorry if I squash it. It can be like a small piece of meat and a blood clot. I still can't control it."
They have probably figured it out. They all fluttered like a chill.
"Hey, smash..."
"Now, a piece of meat..."
"Ah... Saya-chan. Maybe you should be guided by the voice?"
"I think that would be better too. Even with a bamboo stick, if my ability was activated, the watermelon could be turned into fine powder. I don't think it's that difficult to turn a watermelon into fine powder."
When she said that, Kusanagi put a blindfold on her.
"And I think the seaside guesthouse is the best setting for a suspense drama. I'm sure accidents can easily happen."
"Well Saya-chan. Are you in a bad mood?"
"Eh? Isn't that the case?"
When she smiled, Kusanagi laughed palely.
"I am scared..."
++++++++++
"It is night."
Totsuka sat upright with a flashlight in one hand.
A great big room where everyone but her sleeps. After that the futon was well placed and they enjoyed throwing pillows.
Sitting on the messy futon, everyone looks at Totsuka with a mysterious look.
"So, let's start a hundred stories."
The lights were off. An impressive sound rang out.
He lit a candle and the story began.
"This is a story from the Taisho era."
(I don't know. After this, I'll have to sleep alone.), she thought.
Actually, she wasn't very good with ghosts and ghost stories.
While she tried not to imagine too much, she listened to Totsuka's story, regretting it.
"Well that's the end."
Totsuka blew out the candles.
The room went dark and he shrugged.
But soon, he turned on the flashlight and Totsuka laughed.
"How was it? Yata."
"Hehehehe, it's fine! No, not at all!"
Yata's voice had a volume setting that's a bit strange. The intonation was strange too. She snapped her eyes open and looked back to her side.
Maybe Yata was also not good with these kinds of stories?
"Oh. I'll do my best this year. Yata."
"I can afford!"
"Because of that, there were a lot of 'uh', right?"
Totsuka laughed and lit a candle.
And when he said, "So next time...", he clicks the flashlight off.
At that moment, her hand was clenched tightly and she was in awe.
(Kya, kyaaaah!), she screams internally.
When she hurriedly looked to her side with a shock that her heart was about to leap out of her mouth, Yata, who turned pale, was holding her hand.
But perhaps unconsciously, the line of sight did not move from Totsuka. He kept looking at him like he was paralyzed.
"......"
His hands trembled slightly, but they were hot and powerful.
He was always nice, but maybe he couldn't help it, he was squeezing her hand so hard it hurt.
She bit her lip and closed her eyes.
She was no longer afraid. That was another emotion.
She would enjoy quietly. Just for her, this time.
And how many times have she been through a scary story? Totsuka suddenly coughed, "Eh? Can you hear me?"
"You can't hold a hand like that!"
"Oh, no, I'm not trying to scare you. Is someone sleeping, snoring?" He said tilting his head.
When everyone spoke, he could hear it for sure.
They all looked at them in amazement.
"Eh? This is…"
"Hm. Maybe…"
Kusanagi stood up silently and clicked on the lights.
The room lit up. For a moment, she looked his narrowed eyes.
"Oh, after all..."
"King... Don't make history a lullaby."
Kusanagi and Totsuka sighed.
Suoh, he was sleeping peacefully with an innocent face like a child.
"Eh? Wasn't that scary? Yata didn't give up either."
"I don't think that's the case. Yata did his best because Saya-chan was there."
Kusanagi looked at her as he said it.
Then he cut the words unnaturally, staring at her hand for a second, two seconds, three seconds.
It seems like he wasn't the only one wondering about it, and they all turned their heads from her and looked at her one after another. Of course, Yata too.
"Uh, aaaaaaaaah!"
At that moment, Yata, who finally noticed that he was squeezing her hand, turned his face bright red and screamed, raising both hands.
"Gyaaaaaaaaah!"
"Oh, he screams more today."
Kusanagi laughed.
When she looked at Kusanagi with a bit of disappointment, Kusanagi looked at her and laughed jokingly.
"Konohana-san, second round, shall we?"
"Second round?"
Kamamoto bowed his head.
"Is night yet to come? There is a cave behind this guesthouse."
Kusanagi smiled and looked at Yata, who turned pale.
"Try your luck, let's do it."
++++++++++
The sound of the waves coming and going. A chorus that was always played.
Unlike the day, the sea lit by the silver moon was surprisingly quiet and mysterious.
The boundary between the sky, the sea and the darkness of night that covered the world was warm, and if you take it easy, you will be absorbed.
"This cave is actually quite a famous psychic place. If there is an accident around here, the corpse will surely flow here due to the tidal flow."
She couldn't understand why he was saying that, but Totsuka seemed to have fun saying it.
"They're not just humans. Big cats, birds, whatever. That's why there's always a soul hanging around here."
"That's why I left 'something' in the back of the cave during the day, so I'd like you to get it in pairs."
"A couple? Won't it take time?"
"Okay. It's not deep. If you rush when it's bright, it's less than five minutes round trip."
Kusanagi laughed looking at them.
However, Yata had a haunted face. Well, so does she.
He may have noticed. Kusanagi smiled and slapped her on the shoulder.
"That?!"
"Yata-chan, I'll forgive you if you cry. If you don't go, why don't you cry?"
"Who will cry?! Okay! This is over here!"
Yata yelled at Kusanagi's bad words.
Oh, he was distraught, but now he seemed to be fired up.
"Homura, group together quickly."
"Saya-chan."
At the same time that Kusanagi said that, Chitose came running with a smile towards her.
"Eh?"
"Oh! Hey! Chitose-san!"
"They're loud! Is it fun with guys? I like that."
"Don't get ahead of yourself, Chitose!"
They all parted and spread their hands evenly.
"Eh?!"
"Oh, that..."
"Well that's the way it is."
Kusanagi shrugged and laughed at her surprised eyes.
"Yes, Saya-chan, you must choose, who should be the knight that ventures with you?"
"Eh? But…"
"Guys! Even if you are not chosen, don't hold a grudge!"
Everyone happily responded to Kusanagi's words. Was that really good?
Well, if that was the case...
Along with Kusanagi, she saw Yata, who was fed up with what he didn't like.
"Well then... Yata-kun..."
"Eh?"
Yata looked at her as if he was surprised by her words.
At the same time, the boos that came out from everyone were out of control.
"Eh?! Why am I not a candidate?!"
"Well, you weren't there because she didn't pick the guys who ran."
Kusanagi laughed and patted her on the head.
"I said don't be resentful! Well, that's too many to be a pair!"
At those words, everyone scattered as they said "Tsk."
She looked around and at Kusanagi.
"Hm, was that wrong?"
"What happen?"
"Well, should I have chosen from among the candidates?"
"No. As I said before, there was no such condition."
Kusanagi shook his head and patted her head again.
"This is your night; you can choose your companion. If you think it's Yata-chan, it's fine."
Involuntarily, she looked back at Yata.
The moment their eyes met, Yata turned bright red and turned around as if he was in a hurry.
(Wow…), she thought.
At that moment, she felt so embarrassed that she turned around to hide her cheeks from him.
"Then I'll go first!"
It seemed that the combination had been decided, and Chitose and Dewa waved their hands and entered the cave.
After waiting a while talking about it, two people soon came out.
When they handed what they were holding to Kusanagi, Kusanagi said, "Hmm. Okay."
They were both so light that when he asked, "How was it?", they replied, "It wasn't a big deal. Actually, it's just a normal dark cave."
She was afraid of it.
"I found it useless."
"What? Seriously, it's just a cave with nothing."
(That's why I'm scared of that dark empty cave!), she thought.
She was not afraid of a well-kept, artificially lit cave. But in that case it would no longer be a cave.
However, it seemed that she (and one other person) were the only ones who thought so, and everyone was able to clear the task without problems. Some people even said it was boring.
And finally it was her turn and Yata's.
"Yes, please go."
Yata didn't cry, so she couldn't help it, and he reluctantly walked into the cave while he was kicked out by everyone who smiled.
The flashlight also slightly illuminated her feet. A step forward is a state of darkness.
Only the sound of calm waves and the sound of dripping somewhere resounded.
(Ah! I don't like it! Let's go!), she thought.
"Ah, Yata-kun…"
If she called him in vain, Yata would shake his back.
"......"
"What's wrong?! Don't call me when I have no use!"
"Uh..."
Yes, it was useless.
She just called him, but she couldn't say: "Because I'm afraid, hold my hand.". It was embarrassing!
She wanted to be able to say that kind of thing without calling on the phone.
"Come and see, Yata-kun.". Hmm, she really couldn't do that.
However, her prince was extremely insensitive in that area, and in the end he never took her by the hands, and while she trembled, she walked slowly as she looked around her.
As Kusanagi said, they soon reached the innermost part of the cave.
When she circled the lantern light, she saw a bright red object on a large stone.
When she looked and got closer, she found a bright red marble.
"It is this?"
"That's how it is."
For the moment, she looked around again, confirmed that there was nothing else like that, and he answered yes, and Yata squeezed one of the marbles and it swelled again.
"Then I'm going home!"
"Ah! Wait! No, Yata-kun!"
It was then that she reached out as she was caught by a slippery stone.
Suddenly, the lantern light went out.
"Eh…?"
Suddenly, the field of vision turned black. Even Yata's appearance, who should have been next to her, seemed vague.
"Why?"
She could hear Yata clicking the switch on the flashlight.
That was…
"Ah…"
"Gah!"
Obviously, a voice other than theirs was in the immediate vicinity.
Horror rushed through her back in amazement.
"Ah…"
There was a scream.
No. To be precise, she tried to avoid it. But faster than that, his hot hands tightened on her.
"Let's go out!"
At the same time, Yata's voice echoed. Just as she was, he pulled her tight.
"Ah!"
She wondered how many times Yata pulled her like that and ran.
At times like this, Yata never let go of her, will happen what have to happen.
She already knew. That was why she was no longer afraid.
Yet her heart was beating.
She was excited by the warmth of the hand, the grip and pulling force.
She couldn't see him at the moment, but the reliability of his back running forward had helped her many times.
Although he wasn't good with ghosts, no matter how rushed or scared he was, he couldn't escape on his own. He did not abandon her.
Yata's "shielding" is a reliable practice. He would never betray her.
"Oh, we go out."
"If you run, it's a very short distance. In the blink of an eye, you'll be in the moonlight."
Totsuka was waiting and greeted them with a smile.
"Did you run? Oh, you brought the marbles correctly. Great."
Totsuka received them while Yata was out of breath.
"Well, more than that, a flashlight..."
"Eh?"
"Maybe the battery is dead, it's gone..."
"Huh? It's weird. I just changed the batteries yesterday... Yes. Okay. Then take this flashlight. Replace the batteries again and give it to the last group."
To that end, Yata shook his head.
Totsuka opened his eyes asking, "What?", but he seemed to understand everything when he saw Yata holding a marble in his right hand and holding her hand in his left hand. He reacted and hit Yata's shoulder.
"Wow, I see. Okay. Hey. If the next group can get through, they'll pick up the lantern you dropped."
"Understood."
Kamamoto, who was about to enter, waved as he smiled.
"But they brought the marbles, so the Yata-Saya couple made it too."
"This year's Yata-chan will do his best. Besides, now you can walk hand in hand with a girl in a cave. You have grown up."
As he smiled, Kusanagi patted Yata's head.
"And you are still connected."
Yata reddened his face and released her hand.
"Ah!"
"That's..."
"One step up the stairs from an adult~"
"Oh, that's not why!"
"Well, you guys has been together almost since the first semester, so I'll get used to anything. Do your best in this condition, Yata-chan. That's right. It's not enough to get excited about the backstory next summer."
"Yes, I will be very careful!"
Yata said that to Kusanagi, who smiled.
As he listened to him, she suddenly lowered her eyes to her right hand.
The wind took away the heat she felt.
She wishes the cave was a little longer.
She hated scary things, but if that cave was a little longer.
Then she was enjoying a happy moment that was a bit longer and could forget about everything.
She was able to hold hands with Yata.
