you didn't think Sniper Mask cared about it, not that you could tell under his mask
but in actuality, he was confused as to why you avoided him all of the sudden
so, he opted to ask you one day
You shut the door to the dining room rather aggressively as you exited, but you couldn't care less. You let your body slump against the adjacent wall, your plate of food resting on your lap.
Today had been... exhausting, to say the least. Kuon was on her usual actions of pining over 'Mr. Mask', crossing your way a few more times than you would have liked. During your meeting earlier with her and Yuri, your fellow mouthless masked allies, she had the gall to talk on and on about how much she adored him.
You hated it.
You looked down at your food, a scowl finding its place on your features. You glared at it, pushing the pieces around with your fork, not noticing a door open and close right in front of you.
"Jesus, if that food was alive, it would be 6 feet under with the glare you're giving it." You hear a gruff voice call from in front of you. A voice you would rather not be hearing right now.
You continue to move around the food, staying silent as the man awkwardly stands in front of you, unsure of what to do with himself in this situation. "Is it, uh, okay if I sit here?" He asks, which finally makes you look up.
He had a plate of food between his own hands, his jacket gone and sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His mask covered his face, per usual, but it seemed much more lopsided than usual.
You give him a shrug in response, looking back down at your food again. He stands there for a moment, before taking a seat right next to you, your knees almost touching. "You don't mind if I eat with you, right?"
His question makes your eye twitch. Was he seriously trying to be all buddy-buddy with you now? You shrugged again, not giving him as much as a single word.
You heard him sigh, setting his food to the side before he speaks again. "Alright, what's going on?" He asks, making your body tense up. "Nothing." You shoot back, scowling.
"What happened to the Y/n that stayed up and talked about their life for hours? What happened to the Y/n that told me horrible jokes to try and get a reaction out of me? Huh? What happened to them?"
That broke you.
You were angry, furious even. Was he trying to blame this on you? You didn't do anything wrong! If it wasn't for Kuon, maybe you would still be that person! If it wasn't for her, you could still be friends with him! You could be-
"What?" You hear him say softly, much softer than his previous tone. Shit, did you say that out loud? "Yeah, you did." He says again, looking at you with a concerned expression on his face, not that you could tell.
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to lash out. I just- I’ve been-" You stutter, trying to find the right words. He laughs at that, actually laughs at it.
His laugh is hearty, warm, almost inviting you to laugh along with him. You don't, but he quickly composes himself, making your head turn towards him.
"Why on Earth were you jealous of Kuon?" He asks honestly, watching at how the invisible gears turn in your head, searching for an answer. You sigh heavily, running a hand across your face as you shake your hands while you speak.
"I just- she’s always there with you. She's latched onto you 24/7! I can't get 5 minutes alone with you before she comes barging in." You rant, frustration evident in your shaky voice.
"I just wanted to be your friend, be close with you. I can never do that because she's-she's there." You groan, hugging yourself with your arms. "I sound like a selfish idiot now, huh?"
You laugh dryly, frowning. He sighs, but a smile plays at his lips. "Y/n." He begins, his hand resting you your forearm. "You know she would never purposefully do that. She just, she has an infatuation with me I guess."
He sighs dramatically, earning a chuckle from you. "But." He tells you, watching your eyes as he speaks. "That doesn't mean I didn't miss you."
Your heart skips a beat at his comment, face flushing softly. "Kuon also misses you. You might not have caught onto it, but she looks up to you." He explains, smiling at how your expression softens, mumbling a soft 'she does?' to him.
He nods, laughing once more. "Come on, have dinner with the rest of us. We can't have you sitting alone out here anymore." You roll your eyes, but take him up on his word. He leads you back to the other, Kuon frantically waving over to the two of you the second you pass through the door.
"Y/n! Come sit with me!" She yells excitedly. Maybe you were wrong about her.
after that interaction, the three of you were all on much better terms
yes, kuon still had her habits, but he toned them WAY down after you explained to her how it made you feel
she teased the hell out of you for it too
you, of course, shrugged it off
but you never told her that she was wrong
you were happy to be on good terms with Sniper Mask again
he made a lot more time for you
your old interactions coming back at full force, and some new ones
he loved to take you on little walks on the high rises
he also made it a point to teach you how to shoot his rifle
which was terrifying, but exhilarating
you fell for him harder and harder every day
one day, you ranted your feelings out to Kuon
and while she wasn't surprised, it warmed her heart to see how much you loved him
yes, she crushed on him too, but that didn't take away from the obvious connection she saw between the two of you
unbeknownst to you, Sniper Mask had come to her about the same things
his usually cold demeanor broke whenever he talked with you
he genuinely enjoyed your company, he wanted more of it
and then some
so, she put a plan together

making sure you guys get paired together for scouting missions? that's all her
convincing Sniper Mask to get you little gifts and things? of course
overall, the best wing-woman you could ask for
however, the one thing she didn't have anything to do with was his confession to you
he could have used her help with it, that much was clear
but he wanted to tell you how he felt, no help necessary
Sniper Mask had told you earlier this morning to meet you at his room when the sunset before he rushed to get out of your vicinity like you were a plague. Granted, it hurt your feelings, but you couldn't stand him up.
You knocked gently on the wooden door, stepping back and waiting patiently for it to open. After about a minute, while you had heard nothing, you went to knock again.
Your efforts were proved useless as the door swung open hastily, revealing a disheveled Sniper Mask. His usual blazer and fedora were long forgotten, his hair messy, strands pointing this way and that. His mask sat lopsided on his face, still covering it fully.
"H-hey Y/n." He mumbled out, you offered him a wave as he awkwardly shuffled to the side, opening the door as an incentive for you to come in. You stepped inside, walking to the center of the room as you heard him close the door behind you.
You turned to speak to him again, but those thoughts were cast aside as you felt his hands settle onto your cheeks and his lips molding with yours. It startled you, you're eyes open in shock as you looked at him. His mask was completely off, thrown somewhere in the room, but he didn't seem to have a care in the world.
You quickly melted into the kiss, bringing your hands up to gently hold onto his forearms. He hummed, taking a moment before pulling away, leaving the two of you to gasp for air as he rested his forehead against yours. You opened your eyes to meet his, full of adoration.
"I, uh, I think I'm in love with you?" It was more of a question, but you took it happily. You laughed softly, your fingers rubbing small circles in his forearms.
"Was that what that was?"

“Are you sure you know where you are going?” Rafael replied, staring at the road ahead of you.

“We’re going to be late.” Rafael muttered. You glanced at Rafael quickly, before looking back at the road.

“I know you’re Carisi’s best man. We are 5 miles away. Fifteen minutes tops. They’re not going to start without us.”
“That’s if you’re the bride! Or the groom!” Rafael replied exasperated. He stared out the passenger side, a mixture of yellow, gold, copper, red, burgundy, and orange leaves whirring past him. “I still need to drop off my things at the farmhouse.”
You ignored him. “It’s leaf peeping season here in New York. Did you know that? I never understood that but now, coming up here – I get it. It’s so beautiful. I would totally do this with someone…” you trailed off.
You focused on the road ahead. Internally you were swearing up and down. You didn’t mean to be running behind to Amanda and Sonny’s wedding. Originally you were planning on taking the train but then planned track work derailed – literally and figuratively – that plan. So you decided to drive – and because driving to new places gave you anxiety, you decided to give yourself an extra hour of wiggle room. That hour was shot to shit when Rafael called about his rental not showing up. And then you had made a wrong turn and traffic had built up earlier on which further set you back
Now Rafael was blathering in your ear about how you were making him late. Had this been any other person, you would have torn them a new one – you hated being barked at while driving – it made you more anxious and tense. Which was surprising considering the line of work you were in. You were a detective, second grade with Special Victims. This was your pet peeve. And because you had a crush on Rafael from the moment you started, you let this – him griping at you, slide. When you first began to work at SVU, you were instantly taken by the handsome prosecutor. He was intelligent, fashionably sensitive, and his sassy one-liners always made you chuckle. He also cared for the victims and it was his passion for both the victim and the law – taking on cases no one else dared to, made you fall for him that much more. ‘Does Rafael knew how handsome he is?’ you wondered as you waited for the traffic light to change. You snapped out of your reverie and gave Rafael a pleading look.
“Rafael – ten minutes. Just give me ten. We will be there.” You let out a deep exhale and pressed your foot on the gas pedal a little heavier.

The wedding venue – a repurposed barn in upstate New York - was unique and versatile, rustic yet chic. The ceremony took place on the manicured paddock, cocktail hour took place on the lawn and then dinner and dancing took place in the barn itself. For those guests not into dancing, they relaxed with their drinks and desserts by the fire pit.
You watched Amanda and Sonny dance with Jessie and Billie. The little family was all smiles. Earlier in the day, it had been unseasonably warm but by nightfall there was a small chill. You wrapped your shawl around your shoulders and rubbed the tops of your arms. Rafael was sitting by the fire pit, finishing off his drink. He sat forward, his shoulders slumped. You made way to the bar and nabbed two beers before making way outside.
“Hey there counselor. Enjoying yourself?”
Rafael smiled when he saw you and moved over on the bench he was sitting, to make space for you. You murmured a thanks and then handed him a beer.
“Thanks, Y/N.” Rafael replied. “Salud.”
You clinked your bottle with his. “Cheers.” You took a long drag of your beer, watching as the flames danced in front of you.
Despite the roar of the ongoing party, you could hear the sound of crickets chirping and it was soothing. The string quartet began to play “Can’t Help Falling In Love” and you looked wistfully at the dancefloor laid out on the grass.
“Do you dance Rafael?” You asked.
Rafael perked up. He stood up and put his drink down and then reached for your hand. You took another swig of your beer, neatly folded your shawl and then put your beer down before taking his hand. Rafael led you to the dance floor. You wrapped your arms around his neck while his hands gripped your hips.
“You’re quite the dancer Mr. Barba.” You complimented. The combination of his solid body against yours mixed with his cologne made you feel intoxicated and warm. Rafael hummed his appreciation and in response drew you closer to him.
“I’m sorry for snapping at you earlier. I was just anxious about getting here.” Rafael apologized. You pulled back and saw the sincerity in his eyes.
You shook your head and waved him off. “It’s fine – we were running late – shit happens. I was anxious too. I mean we made it, didn’t we? Yes by the skin of our teeth, but we made it.”
“No, I was out of line.” Rafael replied. “I should have just said thank you for the ride. The last thing I would want is to have you be upset with me.”
“Really? And why’s that?” You asked, curious and ever hopeful, searching his eyes.
Rafael cleared his thought, his throat suddenly dry as he racked his brain as to what to say. “Because it would make the ride back to the city super awkward.” He lied. Rafael turned his head, unable to meet your eyes. And in turn, missed the disappointed look on your face. In reality, he was completely fascinated with you. And he had been since he first met you a year and a half ago when you joined SVU.  You had made your own lateral move to SVU, transferring over from white collar crimes. Rafael would watch you out of the corner of his eye, admiring your intelligence and quick wit. You showed empathy for the victims. You had a keen sense of skirting the law but were always able to maintain its integrity. A lot of the time, you drove him – and sometimes your commander – ostensibly crazy. To top it off, you were beautiful. Whenever he was in close quarters with you, he felt enchanted, like a moth to a flame. But you were also fourteen years his junior and he was certain the feeling was not mutual. ‘Why be with me, basically a viejo with commitment issues when you could be with someone younger who was more handsome and could offer you the world.’ He would bitterly think on more than one occassion.
You both continued dancing and you closed your eyes, lost in the play pretend that there was more between you and Rafael. ‘The detective and the lawyer.’ You snorted to yourself – ‘sounds like a cheesy Harlequin romance novel. You then imagined Rafael bare chested with his leg propped on a rock and you snorted again. Rafael looked over at you, his brow cocked and you felt your cheeks burn. “You look very handsome today.” You replied in an attempt to change the subject.
“Thank you. So do you.” Rafael replied. And to him, you did in your mint floral maxi dress with a lace-up crisscross bodice. He wasn’t used to seeing you so dressed up and when you came to pick him up with a full face of makeup on, he damn near came in his pants right there on the corner of 85th and Lexington Avenue.  The song overlapped into the next and soon two songs became three, then four. Some picked up in beat and by the end, you were both hot, sweaty and out of breath. Your hair, which had been pinned up, had fallen. His eyes tracked a single bead of sweat as it dripped down your collarbone and down your chest, finally landing in between the swell of your breasts. You hiked up your dress and looked all over for Rafael. He went to the bar – he should have been back by now. The venue was large and people were still milling about. You spotted Sonny, who was carrying a sleeping Billie in his arms.
“Sonny! Have you seen Rafael?” You asked.
“He went to the farmhouse to check his phone or something. Something about checking on a filing. You know how he is – work, work, work. Did you see Amanda?”

“Thanks – and thanks for coming. So glad you were able to make it.” Sonny replied.
You nodded and continued walking towards the farmhouse which wasn’t that far off from the events venue. The farmhouse was quiet and almost eerie. Your heels made an obscene sound against the hardwood floor and you paused to remove them. “Rafael?” You called out. No answer.
A light from down the hall caught your eye and you made your way down. The door was open a crack and what you saw, made you pause.

Martin hesitates here, before continuing. "The problem started when I wasn't interested in sex one night."
"He forced you?" Gerry interrupts to ask dangerously, threat explicit in his quiet words. His eyes seem to glow faintly in the growing dark of the room, as the sun sets. He wishes, more than ever, that he had helped Jon kick the shit out of Peter Lukas, instead of stopping him.
Martin sighs, eyes pressed tight closed for a second. "Not exactly. He simply pointed out that he paid for me to exist. So I made myself interested."
Gerry's hands tighten into fists and he moves them under the table where Martin can't see them anymore. Jon suddenly looks very pale. They share a look, neither able to see much difference between 'forcing' and what sounds a lot like financial abuse to them.
Martin pulls his legs up to his chest, curling around them as he goes on. "Our relationship became a lot more transactional after that night. I disengaged whatever feelings I had left for him and simply drew all my emotions down deep into myself. I wasn't ashamed to be getting paid for sex, but I felt like I had lost my own consent in the matter. Peter honestly seemed like he had gotten exactly what he wanted. Money was nothing to him, and he had someone to take out on his arm or shag whenever he wanted, without the work of a real relationship, or the complications of unfortunate attachments.
"So, if I needed something, I told him. He set a date, took me out, fucked me. He gave me however much I needed."
Martin shrugs, looking down at his hands. "I honestly hated it. Not because of the prostitution itself, sex has always been very nurturing for me, and I sometimes caught the idea that it was only another way to care for people, and being paid for that is perfectly fine, if you're doing it for the right reasons. The real issue was Peter himself. He had this way of making me feel… bereft and hollow, even before the money came into it."
A few tears track down his face, although his face remains rather blank, in a numb way. It's only as he admits the next words that his voice breaks and the heartbreak works its way out again.
"I was very foolish. Looking back, I can see that I was still a child in a lot of ways. I put myself into a situation that damaged me, but I accept the consequences of those actions, both then and now. I- I-"
"Martin," Jon whispers, warm love clear in his voice. It's nothing but an offer of support, one that he desperately needs right now.
He presses his eyes shut, forcing away the stutter and the lump of tears. "I knew I wasn't going to be able to get out of it, even if I got a crap, minimum wage job that I was qualified for. So I started applying for any work that was available. I made every application exactly what they wanted, and I hoped for the best. When Elias offered me the job at Magnus, I took it happily. Since then I found out that Peter knows him, and probably arranged the job for me, but at the time I had no idea. Looking back, I know that it's a miracle that I got out of it at all. Peter could have chosen to make my life a living hell. Instead, he accepted the several firm rejections I offered him.
"He promised me that we weren't done, that I would be back, but he left me alone. I was done. I moved on with my life, even if I had to lie to do it." Martin sighs, shakes out his shoulders, the most difficult part over now.
"I had always planned to be open about it with my next relationships, but they were so fleeting that it never even came up. By the time I fell for Jon, it had become a secret, one I was loathed to dig up for a relationship I was convinced wouldn't last. I thought to myself, 'Why ruin something that makes me happy?' I assumed it would fall apart anyway, and it was easier to allow it to be in the past.
"But I am sorry. I'm sorry that I never told you. I'm sorry you had to find out from him. I'm sorry that we've been together for more than a year and we basically live together, and I've put you in this position. I love you both, very very much."
"When did you eventually decide that our relationship was going to last?" Jon queries, genuine curiosity in his voice.
There's a beat of hazy silence at the abrupt change in tone and topic.
"Oh, ah-" Martin stumbles over his words, unsure how blatantly honest to be. He chooses the real truth, no matter how unfortunate. "The day that I got Luna was the first time I really accepted that you both loved me."
Jon simply raises an eyebrow, completely unconcerned. "What about you, Gerry?"
"With you," Gerry responds easily, "at the hospital in Morden, when I was so panicked that I couldn't decide if I wanted to kill you or handcuff us together for the rest of our lives. With Martin-"
He breaks off with a laugh, colouring slightly. "It was the day we dyed my hair purple."
"The first time we had sex?" Martin asks, surprised at such a hedonistic answer.
He laughs again, more confidently this time. "No, actually, although that was spectacular. It was afterwards, when you braided my hair for the first time. That was the first time anyone had ever braided my hair. It made me feel so… So honoured. Like I was the most precious thing to you."
"Gerry, you are the most precious thing to me. You both are." Martin whispers, tears creeping back into his voice.
"Good, because the feeling is mutual, and we desperately need you around to keep us in line," Jon tells him, voice unusually firm and confident.
"What about you?" Martin remembers to ask him, at risk of floating away in his post confession haze. "When did you know?"
"With Gerry, it was when we were teenagers. I kissed him for the first time, and he laughed at me. I just knew he was my soulmate." Jon rolls his eyes at this, but his voice is full of blatant affection. "With you, Martin, it was- Well, to be quite honest with you, there was no one special moment. It was a million tiny moments, all of them special and perfect to me. Every cup of tea, every frown while you were writing poetry, glasses pushed haphazardly up into your lovely hair. The easy, glorious look on your face the day you met Gerry for the first time, as if you weren't even capable of not falling in love with him, just as I hadn't been. It was especially the days that I would come out of the library and find you waiting for me after work. This weight of total surety would fill my chest and leave me gasping, needing you."
Jon sighs, his own eyes a little bright. "I suppose it was really the night you kissed me in the rain, and every soft moment since then has only affirmed the way I knew you were it for me."
Jon smiles at Martin so beatifically that he forgets to breathe for a moment.
"We love you too, Martin," Gerry tells him, reaching out to grasp a hand. Jon takes the other. "And we wouldn't want you any other way."

The next morning, Martin wakes to find Jon eyeing his phone intently. Gerry is asleep on his other side, and he feels warmly cocooned between them. Gentle cloudy light fills the space, encouraging the comfortable cozy atmosphere of their bed.
"What's wrong, love?" Martin asks sleepily, snuggling into his side.
"I got-" Jon pauses, utterly flummoxed. "I got paid a bonus."
"What?" Equally perplexed, Martin takes his phone, squinting as he tries to read the screen.
The banking app is open, and there is indeed a deposit there, Jon's normal salary amount, but on completely the wrong date.
In the purpose box, it simply reads 'Entertainment Value'.
"You don't think," Jon starts, hesitant, "that Elias paid me…"
"For hitting Peter Lukas?" Martin finishes, "His own husband."
They blink at each other, bewildered.
"Does that seem… slightly cursed, to you?" Jon whispers as if Elias might hear him. Even worse if Elias could hear them, and would probably enjoy being accused of having a cursed relationship.
"Yes, completely cursed. What is up with those two?" Martin looks as if he's smelled something bad.
"We absolutely cannot spend this money, right?" Jon asks. "Lest we are cursed with their relationship dysfunction."
"Correct," Martin responds firmly, shuddering. "Can we donate it to the animal shelter?"
"I think that's a wonderful idea." Jon's relief at this resolution is palpable.
He does it straight away, as if even having the money in his bank account might ruin their lives.
They let out a simultaneous sigh as the transfer goes through.
"That is wild," Martin mutters as he snuggles back down.
Jon tosses his phone away, no longer interested in it. Instead, he wraps his arms around Martin, burying his nose in his lover's hair. It smells of bergamot and tea leaves and the ocean in winter, just like Martin himself, and Jon luxuriates in the moment.
"I love you, Martin K. Blackwood." He whispers into the soft air.
"Even if I don't actually have a middle name?" Martin whispers back.
"Especially because of that." Jon chuckles.
They lay together, the gentle moments of the morning flowing around them. Later, they get up and shower together. They drink tea in front of the big windows in the living space. Martin reads a book from Gerry's shelves, his own books still packed, and Jon wanders off to play his piano where it is randomly set up, right in the middle of Gerry's typical painting area.
Gerry himself appears downstairs, still sleepy and bleary-eyed. He curls up with his head in Martin's lap, listening to Jon fill the flat with gentle music.
It's the soft sort of moment that each of them had been wishing for all their lives, full of love, and family, and a home of their very own.

Summary: Patton was just getting groceries. The next thing he knew, there was a knife at his throat and he was an unwilling uber driver. Virgil’s on the run after the murder of his dad, and it’s not just his paranoia that’s telling him he’s being chased down. He has to get somewhere safe, somewhere he can trust, and all he has is a couple of stories from his dad and a name: “Green Bellow Foods and Dispensary.”

This is a fic I’ve been writing on study breaks that you have probably all already seen at this point. I’ve affectionately named it the Goblin Brain Fic because it’s helping my brain actually get motivated for studying. I’ve slightly edited it for wording and grammar, but not for content from my previous posts. Emile hummed a quick tune as he pulled into the grocery store parking lot near his apartment. He’d just finished his last session of the day with Kai and Remy had asked that he watch Virgil this evening after work and possibly this weekend, so Emile was picking up something to cook for dinner before heading over there. He was going to grab ingredients to make Virgil’s favorite dinner, spaghetti and meatballs (well his actual favorite dinner was pineapple pizza from the local pizza joint, but Emile wanted to serve the boy something at least somewhat healthy for once in his life.)
That in mind, he went straight to the pasta aisle. While contemplating which of the spaghetti noodles he should grab, he noticed a man with a cart also perusing the aisle. He glanced at the contents of the man’s cart. “That’s a lot of cheese there friendo,” he commented.
“I’m trying to make homemade macaroni and cheese,” the man divulged with a smile.
“That’s always fun,” Emile replied, smiling back himself.
“I’ve never done it before. Do you have any suggestions for noodles?”
“Hmm… how about shell ones?”
“Ooo, like the boxed Velveeta shell macaroni, but better!” He enthused. “Aw! They have mini ones!” He snatched the box excitedly. “They’re so cute!”
“They are,” Emile agreed as he finally selected the whole wheat store brand spaghetti and slid it into his cart.
“Thanks for the suggestion! Have a nice day,” the man said and turned to leave.
“Bye!” Emile called after him.
He then continued on his quest, grabbing pasta sauce and a lot of fresh vegetables to sneak into the canned sauce as well as to leave in his brother’s home with the hopes that either his brother or his nephew might actually eat something healthy for once if it was right there. (Doubtful, but Emile could hope.)
He then spent an inordinate amount of time, debating which popcorn to get. Emile was thinking tonight would be a good night for movies with Virgil, and Virgil’s favorite snack was popcorn. He really should get the less buttery one, but he knew that Virgil liked buttery popcorn more. Perhaps he should compromise and get plain popcorn, but that one healthier ranch flavored powder topping that he liked. Decided, he grabbed the popcorn and the topping and went to exit the snack food aisle. “Hey,” a man with a mustache drew his attention away from his task. “My friend lost his little brother in the store. Have you seen a younger teenager walking alone around here? We think he might have gone to the snack food aisle.
Emile frowned. “Nope I haven’t seen anyone. I hope you find him soon.”
 “Thanks,” the man said already distracted with looking around again.
“Maybe try the front desk,” Emile suggested. “They could call over the intercom.”
“My brother’s already there,” the man replied waiving the suggestion off. “But thanks.”
“Well good luck!” Emile said as the man walked away towards the back of the store.
Gee, it took him almost 40 minutes to get groceries, he realized when he glanced at his phone in the checkout aisle. He shouldn’t let himself get that distracted.
Once he’d paid for the groceries, he took everything to his car and shoved them in the backseat. Right as he was about to stick the key in the ignition, he got a text message from his secretary.
‘Kai forgot his phone in your couch again, but your office is locked. Are you able to swing by really quick to let him in?’
He texted back ‘Sure! I’ll be there in 5.’ He wasn’t going to keep Kai away from his phone for the night and it wasn’t like the groceries he’d grabbed were extremely time sensitive. So, he drove back to the office.
Kai seemed thankful for his willingness to drive all the way back even if his ‘thank you’ was rather distracted as he was already typing something on his phone the moment after Emile handed it back to him.
He said goodbye to Kai and to his secretary and hopped back into his car intending to drive to Remy’s house. He’d just started the car when his phone started to ring.
“Yello,” he said cheerfully.
“Emile,” the serious voice greeted on the other end of the line. “This is Logan Sanders.”
Emile sobered immediately. “Hi Logan. Is something wrong? Do you have a patient for me?”
“No, actually,” Logan said. “It’s… about your brother.”
Emile froze. “What about my brother?” he asked. “Remy is on light duty.”
“He was yes,” Logan said. “However, there was a complication.”
“What type of complication?” Emile said and a bit of anger came to his tone unbidden.
“He was specifically targeted,” Logan said, and despite the calm way he spoke, Emile could detect the distress in his tone. “I’m very sorry, but he’s dead.”
“Oh, god. What about Virgil?”
“That’s the other thing,” Logan continued. “As soon as I heard of Mr. Gates death, I dispatched an agent to his home for protection, but when he arrived, his son was not there. There were signs of a break-in, but the perpetrator’s car was still there, and my agent believes Virgil fled the scene and was followed on foot. My agent is currently searching for him…”
“There’s a ‘but,’” Emile concluded.
There was a slight pause, just enough to tell Emile he wasn’t nearly as unaffected as he was pretending to be. “I haven’t heard from that specific agent in over half an hour.”
“Okay,” Emile gulped, suddenly feeling sick to his stomach. There were hundreds of explanations for that, but many of them were bad. “Okay. I’ll go look myself since I know him and where he might go. I’ll,” his voice cracked a bit. “Call you if I find anything.”
“Alright, and I’ll…” but whatever Logan was going to say was lost as a hand touched Emile’s shoulder.
Emile screamed and tossed his phone as he accidently slammed his elbow into the car horn making it blare.
“Calm down! It’s just me,” said a voice.
“Frickin Frozone shitake mushrooms terrible tigger fish paste and cabbages, Remington!”
“You could curse like a normal person, Emile.”
“And you could not break into my car like a normal person,” Emile shot back turning around in his seat to face his older brother. “I’ll presume you’re not dead then.”
“Aw, were you worried about me?” he asked.
Violence is never the answer. At least that’s what he told his patients. Emile punched his shoulder the best he could from this angle. It clearly didn’t hit too hard as Remy just laughed.
“Sorry, Em,” he said reaching forward to ruffle his hair. Emile slapped him away.
“What happened?” he asked.
“Mega Bitch Ex decided she wanted me shot in the head and I decided I didn’t want that.”
“What does that mean?” Emile asked.
“It means,” Remy answered. “I faked my own death and while she thought I was dead,” he dug something out of his pocket and dangled it in front of him. It was a flash drive. “I stole this.”
“What is it?”
“Super-secret spy business.”
“Remy.”
“All that matters is she really shouldn’t have it and Logan will be very happy I got it away from her.”
“Speaking of Logan…” Emile had dropped his phone when Remy had surprised him, and the call had ended. He picked up the phone. “I should call him back.”
The phone was slapped out of his hand the second his picked it up.
“What the kriffing kriff Remy?”
“Please just say fuck. I beg of you,” Remy groaned. The phone starting ringing again from its place on the floor. Doubtlessly it was Logan since the last thing he’d heard was Emile screaming like he was being murdered.
“I need to answer that, Remy,” Emile said with a frown.
“You can’t. It’s too risky.”
“You literally just said you stole it for Logan. Why can’t I just answer the phone, say Remy’s fine actually, and he has a super-secret spy flash drive to give to you?”
“Because you don’t say shit like that over the telephone,” Remy told him while starting to wiggle his way into the front seat. “We’re going to take this thing to Logan in person and no one can know I’m alive until then.”
“I know you’re alive,” Emile pointed out.
Remy grabbed Emile’s phone when it stopped ringing and hit the power button to turn it off. He stuck it into his pocket. “Family doesn’t count,” Remy said. “…Also, I needed a ride.”
“Are you really going to keep my phone hostage this whole time and also what happened to your car?”
“It… uh… blew up,” Remy said. Emile stared at him blankly. “Yeah… so, anyway.”
“What do you mean it blew up?” Emile asked.
“I said ‘anyway.’”
“Saying ‘anyway’ doesn’t mean I just magically forget what you just said.”
Remy waved that off. “Anyway,” he said again. “We’ll have to pick up Virgil and … do something with him. I’m not leaving him home alone during this.”
“Right. I assume since you’re not dead that Virgil isn’t actually missing,” Emile concluded.
But instead of agreeing and telling Emile where Virgil was to go pick him up, there was silence. “Virgil is what?”

Zaterdag 12:41
In the afternoon sun, Robbe could feel his clothes sticking to him. Even with his gray t-shirt and a light pair of shorts, Robbe was sweating so much and he was in desperate need of a shower. The mid-afternoon sun was hot and ruthless, beating down on their shoulders and their heads as the day drew on. In addition, the dark pavement only increased the measures as their feet burned through the soles of their shoes. 
But, despite the summer heat beating down on their shoulders, suffocating them all, Robbe kicked the winning goal past a pair of skateboards standing near the other team’s backpacks and his friends cheered loudly in response. 
As soon as Robbe had arrived at the park with Lucas, his skateboard tucked under one arm, his three friends had cheered at the sight of him. His closest and oldest friend, Jens, had also promptly run over to them, planting a kiss on Lucas’s lips. But, shortly after, he ripped the skateboard from Robbe’s grasp and shoved it into Lucas’s hands. Then he dragged Robbe over to the concrete platform to Moyo and Aaron. Within seconds, Robbe was nominated as the final member of their football team while Lucas sat on the edge, shrouded in shade and cheering them on. Robbe had complained about being forcefully volunteered, but he actually welcomed the distraction. Thoughts of Thomas had once again started to edge into the front of his mind. 
But, as he scored the winning goal, Jens collided against him, picking him up easily and spinning him around. Moyo cheered, jumping up and down, while Aaron attempted to give him a high five as Jens was still spinning him. The other team came over to congratulate them on their victory for the mini-tournament. 
“Hey, Robbe!” Lucas called, waving his arm to get his attention. As Robbe forced himself from Jens’ hold, still slightly dizzy, he found his roommate lounging beneath the shade of a tree nearby. Robbe jogged over to him and Lucas tossed him his phone. There were numerous notifications from Twitch and a few from Instagram (none about Thomas, his mind registered), and a text from Yasmina about their Zoom study session tomorrow, but the thing that quickly drew his attention was the time. 
It was almost 13:00.
“Shit,” Robbe breathed out. 
“What is it?” Jens said, appearing at his shoulder. There was a look of concern on his best friend’s face as he glanced over at Robbe. With one hand, he pushed back his hair and reached toward Lucas, grasping his outstretched hand with the other. “Is everything okay?” he asked when Robbe took too long to respond as he typed out a text to Yasmina. 
“Yeah,” Robbe replied, shoving his phone in his pocket. He bent down to snatch his skateboard and his headphones from the grass beside Lucas. He stood up and ran a hand through his hair which was damp with sweat. “It’s just almost 13:00. And, since we’ve just spent about two hours playing football, I’m in desperate need of a shower.”
Jens nodded his head. “If you’re still on when I get home and clean up, I’ll join you.”
“Where are you going?” It was Moyo, stepping into the shade. 
“I haven’t even gotten to show you my trick yet,” Aaron spoke up.
“I know, I’m sorry,” Robbe said, sadness creeping into his voice. “But I’ve got to stream in an hour and I need to have a shower before I can even think of streaming or getting food.”
There was a part of him that wanted to cancel the stream, to hang out with his friends some more. It had been too long since it had been like this, since Robbe didn’t feel like there was something missing, but he swallowed the thought before it continued. And, he always did online matches every weekend with viewers. It was always a blast because they always had a fun time and he wanted to do that, too. Plus, Saturdays always tended to bring a higher viewership and, since it was technically his job, it was something that he needed to take seriously. 
“It’s okay,” Aaron said. “I get it.”
“Gotta hustle,” Moyo said with a grin. 
“Yeah,” Robbe replied. “But, I’ll see your trick next time… if you can do it.” 
Aaron looked offended at the notion that he couldn’t perform the trick he’d worked so hard on and Moyo laughed, reaching over to give him a high-five before he stepped away. “Good luck, man.” Robbe smiled in thanks before moving away from them. 
The trip back to the flatshare was short. Even on the back of his skateboard with his music pounding in his ears, it only took him about ten minutes (and it only took ten minutes because the crosswalk light took forever to turn green). The promise of a cold shower to offset the flushed feeling in his skin was promising and he couldn’t wait. Once the apartment slid into view, Robbe hopped off his skateboard, picking it up with one hand and walking the rest of the way. As he walked up to the lobby door, it abruptly swung open and he leaped back before he could be struck with it. 
In its wake, Zoë stepped out, holding her purse open with one hand. She glanced up, possibly searching for something else, and instead found Robbe standing in front of her. Zoë beamed down at him as Robbe pulled his headphones off his ears. “Oh, Robbe! You’re back already? I didn’t think you would be back home for a little bit longer.”
“Yeah,” Robbe replied. “I’m streaming soon but I got roped into a football tournament.” He paused and Zoë grinned at him, raising an eyebrow. “So, I need a shower before I even think of doing anything else.”
“Ah, gotcha,” Zoë replied, smiling. She held the door open for Robbe, who quickly stepped past her to keep it open. He turned back to Zoë who was moving toward the fancy black car parked at the curb. “Milan took his shower before I did so the bathroom is all yours,” Zoë informed him. “I told Milan before I left so I’ll tell you too. I don’t know if I’m going to be back for dinner so don’t wait for me.”
“Where are you going?” Robbe asked.
Before Zoë could answer, he heard someone shout, “Hey, Robbe!” He glanced at the car, finding it now had the window rolled down. Robbe could see Senne behind the driver’s seat wearing a gray t-shirt. Robbe waved and Senne raised his hand in greeting. “I’m stealing Zoë for the day!”
“Ah, okay,” Robbe replied, grinning over at Zoë, who rolled her eyes playfully. 
Robbe had been aware that Senne and Zoë had heard that reconnected through Amber, who was one of her friends from their school. But, his roommate had been keeping their relationship secret for the past few months. In high school, Zoë and Senne had moved so quickly, it complicated things. Now, Zoë had wanted to take it slow. Robbe had only seen Senne at their apartment once in the three months since they got back together, making coffee on a Tuesday morning. 
“Does that mean I should expect you back at all tonight?”
Zoë rolled her eyes. “I don’t know. Senne and I are going out with his roommates and maybe Amber. If it ends up being later, I might stay over at his place.” She glanced toward the car, smiling at Senne, who was waiting with an amused grin on his face. Then, she turned back to Robbe. “Be honest with me. How do I look?” 
“You look perfectly fine.”
“Do I?” Zoë asked. She looked down at her shorts and her flowy summer shirt. In a nervous burst, she tried to flatten out the ends that weren’t tucked into her shorts. Then, she looked back at him. “I’m so nervous, Robbe. I haven’t met Senne’s roommates before. I mean, I have seen Sander. Occasionally, through Amber. But this is the first time I’m meeting him and their other roommate as his girlfriend.” 
“Zoë, breathe,” Robbe said. Zoë took a deep breath before releasing it shakily. “It’s going to be great. They are going to love you.” She looked skeptical. “Now, I would suggest heading to the car before Senne decides to get out and carry you to it.” 
Zoë laughed. “That’s definitely something he would do, isn’t it?” she asked, beaming over at Senne. Before she stepped away, she added, “I would give you a hug, Robbe. But I can see how sweaty you are, so you’re just going to get a hug tomorrow, okay?” 
Robbe laughed, nodding. 
As Zoë headed to the car, Robbe stepped into the lobby, watching her over his shoulder. Once Senne had realized she was coming, he went to get out of the car. But Zoë said something that stopped him in his tracks. Senne laughed in response. Once Zoë was in the car, her boyfriend leaned over to press a kiss against her cheek before the window rolled up. Then, the two of them were gone. 
Robbe felt something tug longingly in his heart. As he pressed the up button for the elevator, Robbe’s phone chimed loudly and he quickly pulled it out. He expected it to be one of the Broerrrs or Milan or possibly his mother. But the name Thomas glared up at him and his eyes darted over the message.
Thomas: I’ll stop by and get my stuff tomorrow. 18:00. Promise
Robbe stuffed his phone into his pocket. The elevator doors opened, and he quickly stepped inside. He reached out, slamming the 5 harder than he meant to. But the doors closed all the same and he felt the force as he was lifted up to the flatshare—where he could shower, where he could stream, and where he could put the text out of his mind until Thomas showed up tomorrow. 
If Thomas showed up at all.

With one final zip of your suitcase you were ready for your trip. You and your boyfriend of 2 years, Chris, were taking a couple days off to spend time with your parents. You hadn’t seen them since your college graduation and they had been bugging you for months for you and Chris to spend some time in your hometown. 
You were currently living in Boston and had completely expected that you weren’t going back home following your completion of university. Your life was in Boston. Although you missed your parents and your sister, you were so ready to start this new chapter of your life and be able to make it your own. 
You and Chris had been looking for a house together since you decided to stay in Boston with him. Your relationship was headed in a good direction and both of you were 100% in it for the long run. You wanted to wait till after you graduated to move in together, not wanting to worry about anything besides school. Chris had his realtor on the phone the minute your grades for your last semester had been finalized and everything was approved for graduation. 
When you sat down with him and both said what you were looking for in a house, the topic of kids came up. You knew Chris wanted a family, and you did too. You had both agreed to bring the conversation up again after some time in the house together. You were secretly hoping he was planning on proposing to you soon. You’ve been dropping major hints at him through your Pinterest board ever since you started having serious conversations about your future with each other. You were ready for it all. You wanted to marry Chris and fill your beautiful new home with a bunch of kids. 
You were also slowly convincing him to get Dodger a friend since both of you were always working, and you wanted to make sure he was never lonely when you were at work. 
Your amazing realtor had found a beautiful house right outside of Boston that had everything you were both looking for. You were just waiting for the final pieces of paperwork to come in and finally be able to call the house yours. 
Your lease on your apartment was up last month and had been staying at Chris’s place. All of the big things you didn’t sell from your place were in storage and everything else was with you. 
When you had mentioned to your sister that you and Chris were days away from closing on your new home, she had asked how your parents felt about everything. 
“They know our relationship is serious. They met him at graduation and had known about him well before that. Mom even talked about us having a fall wedding here, since the weather would be perfect. I haven’t told them about the house since we’ve known about this trip since everything with the house started. I want to tell them in person, so don’t mention anything to them.” You huffed. 
“I talked to mom the other day and she thinks that you made a mistake staying there to be with Chris. She doesn’t think your relationship is going to last, since he’s so much older than you. Hell, that’s what everyone thinks. She’s just worried, I think.” She expressed. 
“I’ve been hearing all of that for the past 2 years from everyone I know, especially from mom. Nobody knows our relationship better than we do. We both want the same things and are happy being together. So what if he’s older than me? Dad is way older than mom and no one questions the integrity of their relationship, why does everyone have to question mine?” I said back. 
“I know. I know you keep hearing this, and I’m sorry. I’m really happy for you, Y/N. I really am. Buying a house together is a big deal and I’m glad you’re ready to do that with him. You have everything so figured out and people are just jealous. I mean, you have the hottest dude in Hollywood in your bed every night. Who wouldn’t be jealous of that?” She chuckled. 
“Anyway, we’ll talk more when you get here! I’m so excited to see you. Call me when you land and I’ll meet you at home. Love you!! See you tomorrow.” The line clicked and you threw your phone onto your bed. You let out a deep sigh and moved your suitcase off of the bed so you could collapse. 
You were slowly dozing off when you had heard Dodger starting to bark, alerting you that Chris was home. He had been doing some small indie films in Boston, not wanting to get back into major productions until you were settled in your new house. You picked yourself off your bed and walked into the living room, seeing Chris toe off his shoes and place his things down. He greeted Dodger and walked over to you, mumbling a quick hi and placed a quick kiss onto your lips. 
“Hi my love, how was your day?” He asked as he walked into the kitchen. You took a seat on the barstool facing the kitchen, and watched as Chris started to look around for something to snack on. 
“It was pretty good. Work was how it usually is. I came home early and got all my packing done for the trip and just cleaned a little bit around the house. I left some things you might want to pack out on the bed just incase. How was yours? Anything exciting happen on set?” You asked, leaning back on your chair.
“Wrapped up everything I needed to do so I could relax and enjoy the next couple of days without worrying about needing to get back to set.” He took a beer out of the fridge and leaned against the counter and took a drink from the bottle. “How are you feeling about seeing your parents and telling them about the house? You haven’t really said much about it.” He took another sip and walked closer to you. 
He sat in the chair next to you and just looked at you, waiting for your response. You thought for a moment, collecting your thoughts before giving him an honest answer. You sighed and thought about the conversation you had with your sister. 
“I’m excited to tell time, but really nervous. I talked to my sister earlier and she had told me that my mom has been having doubts about us and was just worried that I didn’t know what I was getting myself into and blah blah blah. But I’m ready to set everything straight and tell her that she can’t doubt us anymore. It’s important to us that we do this and she needs to be on board with that. I know she’ll be happy for us, but you know how she gets. I think dad will be happy for us. He really like you, y’know. Tells me all the time that I need to fly him up here so you two can go to a Pats game. Poor guy had a house full of women his entire life and now he finally has the son he always wanted.” You rambled slightly. 
“Everything is gonna a work out, don’t be nervous. It’s 4 days with your parents and then we close on the house when we get back and should be moved in by the end of the next month. I know how important your family is to you and how much it means to to get their support on this, but you have so many other people who support you. You’re basically and Evans now and you have all of them standing behind us, cheering us on. Don’t worry too much on what might happen with them, but think about what’s happening with us now. Our life together is finally getting started.” He grabbed your hand and kissed the back of it before pulling you off the chair and moving you closer to him. You stood between his legs and wrapped your arms around him. His comment about you being an Evans filled your stomach with butterflies but you didn’t think much into it. 
For the rest of the night you just sat on the couch watching movies and eating random snacks you had in the pantry, not bothering to cook something for dinner. You snuggled up next to Chris and Dodger was next to you as you stayed in the living room well into the night. You had fallen asleep on the couch and next thing you knew, you were being placed on your side of the bed and tucked in gently. 
Chris placed a kiss on your forehead and moved some of your Y/H/C hair out of your face. You sleepily smiled at him before turning to your side and let sleep consume you. You heard shuffling around the room, assuming Chris was finishing any packing he had left. You woke when you felt the bed dip beside you and your were wrapped in a pair of strong arms. You moved closer to Chris and let sleep take over you once again.

It was late afternoon and you and Chris had landed safely in your hometown. You were driving down the street that was still so familiar to you. You saw your parent’s house come into full view as you instinctually turned a corner. You drew in a sharp breath as you put your rental car in park and stared up at your childhood home. You had spent so many years of your life here and it was so weird not seeing it as your home anymore. You looked over at Chris and he grabbed your hand and squeezed it. He grabbed some of his things and opened the car door and stepped out. 
You walked up to the front door hand in hand and raised your hand up to ring the doorbell. Not even 5 seconds later your mom had answered the door and immediately wrapped you in a hug. She grabbed your shoulders and looked at you with joy. She brought you in for another hug before giving one to Chris. 
“It’s good to see you again, Chris! How have things been going for you?” Your mom questioned, moving out of the way so you could walk inside. 
“Everything has been going great, thank you! How have you and Y/D/N been?” Chris asked, looking at the beautiful house he walked into. He had never seen this place in person, just in pictures you had and through a phone whenever he was around when you video called your parents.
 It was so elegantly decorated. Family photos littered the walls, he could pick you out of all of them. One of the things he had hoped he’d get a chance to see were photos from your childhood. You have been through every photo album the Evans family had created, thanks to his mom. You knew he was looking forward to those, so you had made sure your mom pulled them out of storage for him. 
“Same old same old. We’ve been really looking forward to you guys coming to visit us. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve made Y/D/N clean this house over the past week. Had to make sure everything was in tip top shape for your first visit.” She winked at Chris and looked back at you. You plopped down on the couch, exhausted from your hectic day. 
“Thank you, Y/M/N. It’s really a beautiful house.” Chris said as he sat down next to you on the couch, putting his arm across the back of it. She nodded at him and went to go find your dad. You leaned into Chris’s side and he put his arm around your shoulder, pulling you closer. He placed a kiss on the top of your head before continuing to take in his surroundings. 
“Don’t fall asleep before giving your old man a hug!” Your dads voice said as he walked into the living room. You and Chris both stood up and you ran into your dads arms. You loved both of your parents, but you were always closer to your dad. He gave you a big hug, picking you up off the ground slightly and placed a kiss on your cheek. Chris walked up to him and extended his hand for a handshake once you were done greeting your dad. 
“It’s great to see you! Glad you guys could take the time to make it out here.” Your dad said, shaking Chris’s hand and pulling him in for a “bro” hug. 
“Me too. I’m excited to finally be here. I’ve heard a lot of stories and seen a lot of pictures of Y/N growing up here.” Chris said as everyone took a seat in the living room, the two of you going back to your original spots. 
You all sat around the living room talking for a while, just catching up on everything that had been happening in your lives. Your dad and Chris started to get into sports talk and your mom motioned for you to go with her to the kitchen. You stood up from your spot, excusing yourself from the conversation you were no longer interested in and followed your mom. She poured you glass of wine, and then one for herself and told you to take it to the back porch while she got something for your dad and Chris. You sat down on one of the chairs and got comfortable, your mom joining you a few minutes later. 
“So, how are things in Boston with Chris? We haven’t really talked much about it. After graduation we thought you were going to come back, and then you stayed and we were all kinda confused.” Your mom said taking a sip from her glass. 
“Things are really great between us right now. Chris has been spending most of his time in Boston doing some small projects so I see him basically everyday. Work has been going super well, I’m loving every second of it. I know you guys were really disappointed when I didn’t come back, but my life is in Boston now. Chris is there and all my frien-“ You were saying before your mom cut you off. 
“So Chris is your life now? Chris and work? What happened to family first? You were supposed to come home and help us out. We thought you were going to find your own place here and find a job and be able to be here for us. We were there for you all your life.” She criticized. 
“Mom, I’m 22 years old. Don’t you think I’m old enough to start building my own life? Chris and I are building our future together and I couldn’t just leave and continue doing that from here. I wasn’t going to make him uproot his life up to follow me here just because you wanted me to. I’m sorry that you don’t agree with my decisions but I think I’m allowed to decide what I think is best for me.” You said back to her. She rolled her eyes at your response. Before she could say anything back your sister opened the door excitedly greeting you. You were relieved she was finally here to pull you out of the conversation that had taken a turn south between you and your mom. 
You had gone inside with your sister and saw that she brought dinner for everyone. You went over to Chris and asked him to help you get your bags out of the car before you sat down for dinner. He had noticed your change in mood and quickly followed you outside. You quickly ranted to him about what your mom had said and blew off some steam before heading back inside with your things. Chris followed you up to your childhood bedroom, where you two would be staying for the next few nights. It was still the way you had left it. Pictures of your high school friends scattered around the walls, and posters of things you loved when you were in high school. Chris chuckled at some of them and you two headed back to the dining room. 
Dinner had been going well, despite your moms discreet bashes at your life choices, you ignored them and continued to enjoy the rest of the meal. As everyone was finishing, you decided it was as good a time as any to bring up the big news. 
“So mom and dad, you guys don’t know this but Chris and I have been talking a lot the past couple months about our future and where we see it going. Things between us have been getting serious for a long time, but we just put off pulling the trigger on anything until I finished school and found a good job. Now that I am done with school and found a really amazing job, we decided that it was time to start settling down and getting ready for the rest of our lives together. With that being said, when we get back home, we are closing on a beautiful house that we found. We bought a house and we’ll be moved into it by the end of next month.” You said looking to your parents, hoping to be able to read their expressions. Your sister had a smile on her face, already knowing the news. 
Chris grabbed your hand under the table and gave it a reassuring squeeze. You shot him a small smile and looked back at your parents. Your mom had an unreadable expression. She seemed to be going through a lot of things in her mind as she processed everything you had just said. You looked at your dad, hoping to get  a better reaction from him. He stood up from his chair and walked over to the space between you and Chris, and gave you two the most bone crushing hug possible. He whispered a few words of encouragement to you two before letting go and going back to his seat. 
“I’m so happy for you two. This is such a big step in any relationship and it can be really tricky. You seem to be handling it with grace and I’m really proud of you two. I’m sure you have searched high and low for the perfect home for you two, and I already know its going to be beautiful. I hope that once you are all moved in and settled and are ready for guests, you invite us to spend a couple days up there with you. All I ask is that you make sure the Pats are playing so Chris here can show me how you New Englanders party when they play.” Your dad said, looking at your and Chris with such love and admiration. “Not to push or anything, but I hope this house has some extra bedrooms ready for kids whenever you decide you’re ready for them.” He added. 
You chuckled at your dads comment and wiped some tears that fell from your eyes. “Yes, dad, there are plenty of bedrooms for kids. One of the things on our list was it needed to be family friendly. When you see it, you’ll see how perfect it is for a family. But we’re taking it one step at a time and we’ll talk about kids again when we’re ready.” You assured him. He mumbled good and looked over at your mom, who had been silent the entire time. She looked at you when she realized that all eyes were on her. “Mom, are you going to say something to them?” You’re sister chimed in. 
“I didn’t know you guys were really this serious about each other.” She responded. 
“Well after 2 years together I would hope we were serious about being together.” You smirked. 
“I’m sorry for the shit I was giving you earlier, I was just so scared that you were throwing your life away for some guy you were dating. If I had know the depth of it, I wouldn’t have been so harsh. I should’ve listened to you, Y/N. I was just worried about you and worried that he was going to leave you broken and battered. I’m sorry for not giving you more faith, Chris.” She admitted. You and your mom had both stood up and gave each other a long hug. This was the first time in a long time where your mom had been so genuinely happy for you. There was a big family hug, with Chris included. You joked that he was basically a Y/L/N, referring to the joke he had made to you yesterday. 
“Well I do hope that buying a house together means that a wedding is in sight.” Your mom had whispered in your ear. You shot her a look of ‘ I know right?! ‘ and you gave her another hug. Chris winked at you from across the room when you made eye contact. You send him a loving look and mouthed ‘I love you’ to him. He returned the look and mouthed ‘I love you too’ back. You felt butterflies in your stomach and your cheeks heat up.

You had gotten ready for bed before Chris had and was all tucked in and ready to sleep by the time he came up to your room. He had stayed downstairs and helped your parents clean up from dinner while you showered and started to unwind. He saw your body on the bed and assumed you had already fallen asleep. You stared at him as he undressed in front of you and admired his amazing body. He caught you staring and shot you a suggestive look as he turned the lights off and went back to get into bed with you.
“We’re not defiling my childhood room by having sex in here. Plus my mom finally came around to our relationship and my dad probably loves you more than I do, so we can’t risk them hearing us.” You whispered as he pressed his body against yours. Your back was pressed against his bare chest and you gripped his forearms as he wrapped his arms around your shoulders. You turned your head towards him and pressed a kiss onto his lips. He mumbled ‘I love you so much’ between kisses.

In the two weeks since you had moved in, your dread had infringed upon every second. You counted the minutes until his next visit. You expected his intrusions and yet they were always unpredictable. As erratic as the man himself. As inconsistent as your life had become. 
You could not control Steve, could not prepare for him. You could only bide his presence until it was over. Until he left you to stew in your shame. To sink into your self-pity. To hate every inch of the body he had taken over. That which was no longer yours.

“Thank me later,” His voice was dangerous, “Answer the goddamn door.”

“Hey,” You greeted a frowning Gia.

“I think it’s just a clog,” Steve called from under the sink. “No leak.”

“Landlord is out of office and...he offered,” You hated how easily you lied these days.
“And you accepted,” She poked your side and stepped into the kitchen. 
Steve sat up and turned to pull himself up with the counter. He closed the cupboard and smiled at Gia. “Hey.”
“Nick,” She greeted warmly, “How’s it going?”
“Freelancing now, I guess,” He shrugged. He grabbed the cloth from the oven handle and wiped his hands. “A little plumbing issue but nothing serious. And you? Haven’t seen you around since the move.”
“Work,” She leaned against the counter and looked back at you. “Don’t tell me you forgot?”
“What?” You asked.
“You can’t be serious,” She crossed her arms, “It’s Friday.”
“Shit,” You cursed, “I’m sorry Gia, I’ve been working and--”
“I work too but I don’t forget when we plan something,” She snapped, “You’re not busy…” She glanced back at Steve as he pretended to fiddle with the sink. “Are you?”
“No, I think he’s almost done,” You intoned, “Thank again...Nick.”
“Not at all,” He stepped away from the sink, “Should be good to go now.”
“Wait,” Gia blocked him from squeezing past her, “You...you wanna join us for a drink? We’re just heading to the bar down the road.”
His cheek twitched. He was going to smirk. His blue eyes flicked over to you and you shook your head. He smiled. “Sure, if I’m not intruding, of course.”
“Intruding? No.” She replied and sent you a wink over her shoulder. “It’s a nice place. Just on the corner with the patio.”
“Think I know the one,” He said.
“Besides, my sister owes you for the plumbing,” She sang, “You’ll just have to tolerate our girlish prattle.”

Steve was on his second beer and Gia was awaiting her next cocktail. You had barely touched your glass of ginger and rye. You were too antsy for that. Even if it would have calmed your nerves, you feared you might slip. Admit something which might give away your true predicament. The real reason your life had disassembled so quickly.
She was just snickering at her own joke when you finally found your voice. “What about that guy you met? Ben, was it?” You asked.
“Ben...that’s actually what I was hoping to talk to you about tonight but I won’t bore our company with that,” You could tell by her tone that it was going well. It made you wonder then why she had asked Steve to come along tonight. You squinted at her.
“Later, then,” You took a sip of your drink.
“I don’t mind,” Steve leaned back in his chair and stretched his arms. He hung one over the back of yours casually. Gia’s lips twitched as she noticed. “My life’s pretty boring at the moment. Who’s this Ben?”
“A client at my boutique,” Her cheeks rounded prettily as she grinned, “He asked me out to dinner and...well, it was so nice. Doesn’t hurt that he bought me this.” She pulled her hair away from her neck and showed off the single square diamond on its silver chain. “We’re going out again tomorrow.”
“Wow, Gia,” You drew a line through the condensation on your glass, “He sounds...married.”
“That was one time,” She sneered, “And divorced, actually.”
Steve laughed. “Dating. Fun, isn’t it?”
“Don’t miss it,” You grumbled. You thought of Ethan; of how you never thought you’d even have to think of dating ever again. You frowned and gulped down the rest of your rye. “Awful.”
“You just need a rebound,” Gia trilled, “To get you over the hump...in more ways than one.”
“Jesus, Gi,” You grumbled and signaled to the waiter. Drinking sounded even more appealing as the night wore on. Steve’s hand clung to your chair. “It’s barely been a month.”
“You think Ethan’s waiting? I heard he went out with some girl, Sarah, last week.” She said. Your heart dropped and you tipped your empty glass at the server to signal a refill. 
“What?” You felt the air rush from you. Sarah was a co-worker. That was fast.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t--”
“No, it’s...we’re over,” You stood and Steve kept the chair from wobbling before rescinding his arm. “I gotta...use the restroom.”
You squeezed past Steve and wove between the other tables on the patio. You ducked inside and followed the signs that led downstairs to the bathrooms. The stalls were tight and didn’t lock properly. It didn’t matter. You kept the seat down and sat. You held your head and breathed. How much longer could you pretend?
You heard the door open and stood. You flushed as if you had used the toilet and exited to wash your hands. You stared in the mirror as you lathered the soap and rinsed. You dried your hands and shivered. Another drink and you’d call it a night.
When you returned to the table, Gia and Steve seemed entirely at ease, though your sister was distracted with her phone screen. Steve turned to watch as you approached the table and sat. Your second drink had arrived and you picked it up without pause.
“Oh, I was just texting mom,” Gia looked up and set her phone aside. “I was just letting her know that Nick’s coming to the barbecue on Sunday.”
“He what?” You slammed your drink down and choked.
“I invited him,” She said, “Jeez, he’s right here. You think you’d be a little nicer considering--”
“No, no, I just...I forgot about the barbecue,” You wiped your mouth with a napkin and cleared your throat.
“Keep a fucking calendar,” She rolled her eyes, “You know mom will be pissed if you don’t show up.”
“Yeah, I know, I’ll...go, okay?” You avoided Steve’s gaze as he stayed quiet.
“Either way, you’re still invited, Nick,” Gia chimed. “It’s a neighbourhood thing. Everyone goes.”

You couldn’t tell if Steve was that talented a pretender of if Gia was that gullible. She had eaten up everything he said and he had loved every moment of it. You could feel his arrogance; his self-satisfaction at his deceit. His hand on your thigh when Gia wasn’t looking. He was reminding you; he owned you and he could just as easily own everyone around you.
Gia had ducked into a cab outside the bar, giggling as she declared her intent to see Ben. She grinned between the two of you as Steve assured her he’d get you home safely and you held back a scowl. When the yellow door closed and the headlights disappeared at the next corner, your heart sank. 
You walked in silence back to your apartment. Steve’s mask had slaked away. You wondered if it was a shadow of the man he had once been. Of the Captain America who had saved the world several times over. Had he been tainted by some unknown misfortune or had he always hidden this depravity?
He stopped outside your building and turned to you. He leaned on the door and held out his hand. You stared at his palm in the shadows of the flickering overhead light.
“Keys,” He snapped his fingers. “Jesus.”

“In here,” he called back.

Anna wriggled quickly into it, and for the second time that day his heart stuttered in his chest at the sight of her wearing his clothes. The sweatshirt was even bigger on her than his button down had been; it hung nearly to her knees. Kristoff didn’t reply, too overcome with the sudden thought of this is the night you’re going to kiss her. Of course he had tried to earlier when they were interrupted, and he just might have even before that in the elevator if only they’d had another ten seconds or so, but now seeing her so delighted to be wearing something else of his, the way her eyes had sparkled when he’d offered, the fact that she’d snuck him his dinner up here so they could enjoy it together underneath the starlight with nothing but the sound of the waves to disturb them--

“Kris?”
He blinked, startled from his reverie, and looked down to see a look of concern crossing Anna’s face. “Are you alright?” she asked, looking suddenly nervous. “You were just-- staring at me.”
“Yeah, it’s just-- just-- yeah,” he said lamely, and to his surprise, her cheeks turned rosy. 
“Well, anyway,” she said, a little shy as she tugged the sleeves up enough that her hands were free, “I, uh, I put the food out on the table out on the balcony. I got you a Dr. Pepper, that’s your favorite, right?”
He nodded, once again too overwhelmed for words, and reached down to tangle his fingers with hers.
They ate in near silence, exchanging shy glances across the little table between bites of their sandwiches. He wanted to ask her more about everything, not just about the sudden miracle that had sprung up between them but about her, about what she liked to do on weeknights and where she went to elementary school and how she ended up working at an office supply company that, some days, seemed to run purely on nepotism and scotch tape.
And it occurred to him, suddenly, as he watched Anna settle further back in her chair, letting the sleeves fall back down to cover her fingers, that he knew the answers, that they’d been gleaned one at a time over the fourteen months they’d worked together; that she liked to go hiking with her sister or read at home with her cat on her lap; that she’d grown up in Illinois and been homeschooled until high school; and that she’d gone to Auburn and followed her sister further east. 
And god, even just realizing that he’d already known it all, that he’d known it and known that he felt this way about her for so long, was enough for him to again feel that rising certainty that he was going to kiss her tonight-- well, certainty and panic.
Anna, for her part, appeared to be more focused on the night sky than on the way he was dying a slow and painful death right there on the balcony. “I wish we could see the stars like this closer to the city,” she said softly, the evening breeze fluttering through the ends of her hair. 
“You can,” Kristoff blurted out. “I can from my yard.” 
She turned to look at him, her eyes softer than she’d ever seen them. “Can I come see them sometime?”
“You don’t even have to ask,” he breathed, hoping she understood how earnestly he meant it, and that that went for anything she asked of him; it was hers, all she might want of all he had.
He thought for a minute that the moment might be then, from the way her lips parted slightly and the way she leaned forward, but then something lit up in her expression, and she was on her feet. “Oh! I forgot we have dessert!”
He raised his eyebrows at that; it was very unlike Anna to forget anything sweet. He listened to her rustling around through her bag for a moment as he drew in a deep breath, trying as best he could to steady his nerves. 
“Aha!” she said triumphantly, pulling out the bag of M&Ms he’d bought for her the day before and waving them in the air. 
“Well, how about that,” Kristoff said, trying to contain his amusement. 
She grinned, already tearing the bag open. “You want some? Hold out your hand.”
“Nah, that’s okay,” he said, and as she shrugged and popped a handful into her mouth, he added airily, “I got them for you.”
She froze, one hand halfway back down from her mouth, the other slowly losing its grip on the bag. He could have sworn he could pinpoint the moment it had clicked for her— something about the way her eyes were suddenly so bright it made his chest ache. 
“Well, don’t mind me, go on and eat them,” he said mischievously. “I spent good money on those.”
She set the bag down with a decisive tap and finally remembered to swallow. “It was you?” she whispered. “The whole time?”
If he was being honest, he suddenly felt a little off balance himself. He barely managed a nod as she drew closer to him; he let his knees pull further apart so that she could stand between them as she leaned down to set her fingertips against his jaw. They were trembling, just barely.

He was sitting up on the edge of the bed, slumping forward with his head in his hands. Anna sat up, rubbing at her eyes. “Kris, are you okay?”

He paused then, shifting a little to look back at her. “I’m rambling, I know. You can tell me to shut up and go back to bed if you--”
“No,” Anna said fiercely. “I want to know. And I think you need to talk about it for your own sake.”
He was quiet for a moment, just taking stock of her expression, before nodding slowly. “Maybe I do.”
She settled against his back again. “So keep going.”
He chuckled at that, and she couldn’t help but smile at the feeling of his back rumbling against her. “Bossy.”
“Grumpy. Stop trying to distract me.”
“I...okay, okay, fine. Anyway, I graduated by the skin of my teeth, but I had no clue what to do with myself. Pop, uh, he was a handyman, and he got called up to the office building-- our office building, I mean-- and so I just went with him to kill time. And one day Mr. Westergaard-- as in the old dude-- he was there, and he was really pissed off about something with his laptop, and so I offered to fix it, and I did. And he just kinda looked at me and said, ‘well, shit, son, the IT guy I got now told me to just buy a new one’, and he hired me on the spot. And I just...I worked my way up from there, you know? And because he gave me a chance, I turned my life around, and now I can take care of my parents and my sister, and if I lose this…I don’t know if anyone else would hire me.”
Something dawned on Anna then, and she leaned around his shoulder to get a look at his face. “So Hans…”
“He knows, yeah. So does Harry. Nobody else, though. So that’s why he holds it all over my head, knows I can’t do shit about it.”
“Fucking rat bastard,” they said in unison, and after a moment of surprise they both laughed. 
Anna reached over to squeeze his hand. “Maybe...maybe now if people saw the experience you have…”
“Maybe’s not good enough, not when they need me. I gotta at least help them get through til Maggie graduates, and she’s got another year of high school after this one.”
She moved then to set beside him, tugging at his arm until he raised it and let her slip underneath it. He dropped it over her shoulders and pressed a kiss to her temple. “I know that’s a lot to unload on you, Anna, I don’t blame you if--”
“Oh, shut up, Bjorgman, this doesn’t change jack shit. Except that now I think I like you even more.”
“What, really? Former fuckup, that’s your type?”
“No. But it means a lot to me that you told me all that.”
He was quiet then, his thumb rubbing slowly up and down against her shoulder. She was still wearing his sweatshirt-- he was crazy if he ever thought he was getting it back. She nestled closer against his side, wrapping her arms around his sturdy waist. “I’m here for you, Kristoff,” she said softly. “Anytime you need to talk about shit like this. It’s not gonna change how I-- how I feel about you. And tomorrow-- don’t even worry, okay? I’m gonna make sure the presentation is the best fucking presentation this company has ever seen.”
“I don’t know, last year’s presentation on solar panels is a tough one to beat…” he said half-heartedly.
“I mean it,” she said softly. “Fuck Hans. Tomorrow is going to be great. But first, we gotta get some sleep. You can’t just sit up all night worrying it’ll go badly, because then that’s exactly what will happen.”
“I know, I know, it’s just...I don’t know. I was just... I was thinking about all this shit, and then about you, and how I finally got to kiss you, and--”
“Finally?”
“Ah, shit, this is another one of those things you’re gonna want me to say, and you only know about it ‘cause I let it slip, and--”
“Finally for me too,” she interrupted. “But you kinda already gave it away when you confessed about the M&Ms. I got the first pack of those less than a month in.”
“...yeah.”
She leaned up to press a kiss to his cheek, but before she could, he turned and caught her lips with his own. She sighed against him, letting one hand rest on his chest as his arm tightened around her.
When they broke apart, he rested his forehead against hers. “How am I supposed to sleep when it means missing out on more of that, huh?”
“Cut you a deal, if you don’t get your ass back under the covers right now, I’ll never kiss you again.”
She didn’t think she’d ever seen him move so quickly.

part 4: should I kill you with my sword, yeah? Or should I kill you with this word?
Thirteen years ago
If Emma closed her eyes and cleared her mind, it wasn’t hard to imagine she was home. Trees were everywhere in Misthaven and she’d basically grown up in the limbs of them; the smell of pine and pitch were as ingrained in her memory as the smell of her mom’s kitchen and her dad’s aftershave. 
The warm, gentle breeze on her face as she sat near the top of a particularly tall conifer almost tricked her into thinking this was just another summer day—that her friends were waiting for her on the ground and her parents would be calling her in for dinner soon.
Until a cannon boom ripped her from the illusion. Lest she forget, she was still in the Arena, and still fighting for her life. 
“What can you see?”
Lily was barely visible on the ground through the branches, but Emma could hear her loud and clear. They’d developed a system pretty quickly: Emma would climb to scout, while Lily kept a lookout on the ground.
“There’s definitely smoke, but it’s all the way on the other side of the arena. Looks more like an explosion than anything,” she answered as she watched the plume of smoke rise. A forest fire wouldn’t have surprised her, so she was relieved that it seemed to be contained—and hoped it stayed that way. “I’m coming down.”
She hopped down the branches as lithely as she’d scaled them, then dropped the last few feet to the ground. Lily was waiting with her crossbow at the ready, dark eyes scanning around them, guarding both the tree and Emma’s backpack. “Which way was it?”
“To the northeast; so we should be good for a while if we head that way,” she said, nodding in the opposite direction as she hefted her bag onto her shoulders. 
“Let’s do it, then.”
She’d met Lily in the training center and they hit it off surprisingly quickly. Graham hadn’t been so sure of creating an alliance with a tribute from Phrygia, for whatever reason, but the girls insisted. Emma had no idea what was going on behind the scenes, but things seemed to be going well so far. There were 6 left in the games—well, 5 now, based on the sound they heard a bit ago. Once they reconnected after a day of wandering (and somehow avoiding the pixees that swept their way through the arena), they’d become what Emma had to assume was a formidable pair.
Lily was good at hand-to-hand combat; Emma had a sword in her hand from a young age—it was how her dad won his games. Between the two, they’d been able to take down anyone that came at them, easily eliminating 7 tributes between the two of them.
Emma’s co-tribute, Billy, hadn’t made it out of the bloodbath at the Apple Tree, but Lily’s was still out there, most likely. “Is it bad that I hope that was Abigail?” she said as they walked, not really in search of anything but mainly to avoid the dangers of staying in one place for too long.
Emma just shrugged. “I think the definition of bad and good doesn’t really matter here.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right.”
They found a rocky outcrop that night to sleep on, one that kept them hidden from view but able to see anything (or anyone) coming. 
A packet of trail mix had arrived from a sponsor a bit ago, and they were both munching on it while watching the still forest. Other than the breeze and the occasional forest creature, it was nearly silent; Emma just might be able to let her guard down enough to get some sleep.
A jaw-cracking yawn told her she needed it. “Hey, Lil—Lily?”
She had to repeat the other girl’s name because she was either lost in thought, or really intrigued by a tree. But she jumped at the second mention of her name. “Yeah?”
“Do you want to take first watch, or should I?” Emma asked, silently hoping for the former option. But she didn’t trust Lily implicitly enough to not give her the choice.
“I’ll take first; get some sleep. I’ll wake you in a few hours.”
“Awesome. ‘Night.”
“Night.”
Before she laid down, she unbuckled her sword belt—the only time she did that—and hugged it close as she settled her head on her pack. She was asleep within minutes.
Sometime later, she was awoken by the strains of the national anthem and the announcement of that day’s losses. One was the last tribute from Atlantica, who Emma and Lily had taken out that morning; the other was one of the tributes from Erebor. So not Abigail.
Emma tried to drift back off, but something didn’t seem right. She glanced around and realized she was alone.
“Lily?” she whisper-yelled, then waited. But all she heard was crickets.
She called out again, and silently unsheathed her sword.
After the longest 10 seconds of her life, she nearly jumped out of her skin at footsteps.
“Calm down; it’s me,” Lily said as she hopped back up on the ledge. “I just went to...go.”
“Oh.” Well, now she felt awkward. “Sorry.”
“It’s fine. Wanna switch?”
Emma was definitely too wired to sleep now. “Yeah, I’ve got this.”
She couldn’t shake the paranoid feeling that had taken over her, though, and found herself jolting at every sound, from Lily’s snores to a bird taking flight. She’d never been more grateful for sunrise when the sky finally took on an orange hue. 
When Lily woke up shortly thereafter, they quickly packed up and headed off, snacking on their trail mix again. 
After a couple of uneventful hours and a stop at a stream for water, Lily paused. “How’s this tree look?” 
It was a little wide, but seemed tall enough. “Sure.”
She dropped her pack, like always, but tightened the clasp on her sword belt; she was spooked enough that she wanted it handy, and it didn’t get in her way. And then she climbed.
Once she got to the top of the canopy, she took a look across the arena. “Looks like a storm is coming,” she called down, seeing some dark clouds in the distance; knowing the Games, there was as good a chance of it being acid rain as normal. “But nothing else looks to be going on.”
A gust of wind blew across the trees then, but she still thought she heard the sound of another voice—not Lily’s.
“Lil? Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, it’s good. Wanna keep moving?”
Part of her was screaming not to, but that wasn’t much of an option. “Okay; I’m coming down.”
But before she started her descent, she made what was possibly the smartest move of her life: she pulled the sword from its scabbard, and held tight as she slipped down.
Thank God she did. No sooner had her feet hit the ground than the thwick of a crossbolt hitting wood sounded above her.
Instinct took over and she swung out with her sword as she stepped forward. A cry came out when she connected with flesh, and Lily dropped the crossbow to hold her slashed forearm.
“I thought you said she trusted you,” Abigail sneered from where she stood, just behind Lily. She had a fierce-looking set of daggers, one in each hand and ready to strike.
“I thought she did,” Lily spat back, wincing at the sting of her cut.
Though she was gaping at the pair in front of her, it didn’t take long for Emma to piece everything together, and a pit formed in her stomach: Lily must have set this up when she disappeared last night. She led Emma right to this spot so they could ambush her. 
Weren’t they friends? God, she’d never felt so betrayed. 
Anguish quickly gave way to anger, though. “I did,” Emma growled. “Did you ever trust me?” She swung again with her blade, but Lily jumped back. “Was this a setup from the start?” Her next jab hit Lily in the thigh, bringing her to the ground.
There was a sudden stinging in Emma’s left shoulder; she looked to find one of Abigail’s daggers stuck in it, the girl within striking distance of using the other. But Emma didn’t give her a chance, and thrust forward with her sword, sinking it in the girl’s stomach and twisting. She hated the squelching noise it made, and tried to ignore the whimpers when she pulled it out.
Then she plucked out the dagger, tossed it aside, and turned back on Lily. She placed the tip of her blade not-so-gently under Lily’s chin, forcing the other tribute to look up at her. “Well?”
“I did, for a bit. Figured you’d be good for sponsor gifts. But I trusted her more.”
Emma huffed; of course—of course all anyone could see was what Emma was worth on paper. All the other Tributes had been clamoring to get in her good graces during training—surely, the daughter of two victors would be hard to pass up for a sponsor. Lily was the only one who hadn’t sought her out, which ironically drew Emma to her.
Logically, she knew the alliance wouldn’t have lasted; only one can win. But still—she thought she’d found a tiny glimmer of hope in the shit sandwich that was the games.
So, with a primal yell she didn’t know she possessed, she reared back and forced her sword into Lily’s chest.
The cannon fire came seconds later.
She didn’t waste any time in looting the girls’ bags and had already headed off when the cannon for Abigail finally sounded.
There were two more tributes out there and Emma would be damned if she wasn’t the one to win this thing.
That thought kept her going until she called it a night, hiding up in a tree; she wasn’t about to go stay out in the open all alone. Then—and only then—did she let the grief consume her. Angrily, she tore out the braid in her hair that Lily had made a few nights ago, throwing it into a messy bun instead. Sure, Emma had friends at home, but everything was different now—and Lily got that. 
Had. Had gotten it. Past tense. 
She silently cried herself to a fitful sleep until the chirping of birds woke her in the morning.
Before she left her spot the following morning, a flash of white caught her eye; a feather was stuck in some pine needles. It was too long to belong to any of the birds she’d seen in the arena; heck, it kind of looked like a swan’s, but no one had seen any of those in Pomem in years. Weird.
Still, she added it to her overstuffed pack. The bit of happiness she’d gotten from Lily’s friendship was as dead as she was; may as well take some joy from something else. She could almost hear her mom telling her that it was a symbol of luck or hope or something; as much as Emma didn’t put stock in those kinds of things, knowing that her mother did was enough.
And then she set off to end things. On her own.

Present day
Four days in, Emma still wasn’t sure about all this. The concept of the games was still appalling, obviously, but she was unfortunately becoming a bit desensitized to that. It was the whole working-with-others thing she still wasn’t crazy about. 
She wasn’t ungrateful for the alliance—not by a long shot. Between Killian, Ariel, and Graham, she’d figured out the ropes pretty damn quick. As it turned out, her years of pretending to be in a loving relationship worked wonders on potential sponsors. (It also helped that Tamara was leading in kills. Unfortunately, August had fallen on day 2 to one of the tributes from Erebor—who, in turn, quickly became part of Tamara’s body count.) 
But she knew it was going to have to come to an end at some point, and that would be messy. She knew first-hand just how bad it could get. And, dammit, she actually liked them—especially Ariel, with her bubbly optimism and sweet demeanor. She was a stark contrast to Killian—all dark hair, good looks, and a cocky attitude that Emma could see right through—but Emma got along with him way too easily for comfort, and it was pretty clear to her that it was mostly a front, having seen through a few of its cracks already. Whatever had happened on the elevator last week still nagged at the back of her mind, on occasion.
There wasn’t enough downtime to get that answered, though. If she wasn’t keeping watch over things in the game center, she was either resting or hitting up a potential sponsor. She and Graham were trying to keep things balanced so that one of them was always in the center but god, it was exhausting. The games were 24/7, which meant their jobs were, too. 
Honestly, she was kind of surprised that she was still so busy, given that both Misthaven and Atlantica were down to one tribute each; William had fallen victim to a swarm of pixees—insects native to Neverland that were the product of normal bees getting into an ancient (and long-gone) supply of pixie dust—that had basically been bomb-dropped by one of the girls from Sherwood. But Tamara and Ursula had finally met up and were doing pretty well together. They managed to tag-team the boy from DunBroch, but that was the only move they had made on offense.
That said, there were still some times Emma had to calm herself down; when the image of Lily’s sneer flashed in her memory, or the way life had faded from her eyes. She could feel her magic creeping up her spine in those moments, threatening to let loose; it was only her experience in putting on a face for show (and several deep breaths) that held it back.
She had just watched the girls survive a run-in with some raining fireballs. They’d found shelter by a river and were using the water to soothe their injuries, but they needed burn medicine if they were going to get any farther. Even though it was only a few days in, the price of everything had already skyrocketed. That meant they’d have to hit up a well-endowed sponsor. Which meant she and Killian would have to take a trip. 
Early on, Graham had thought it would be a good idea to split up and maybe learn some tricks of the trade from the other pair of mentors. Emma, being the least outgoing of the two of them, consequently ended up with Killian. “Maybe his personality will rub off on you,” Graham ribbed. (Emma responded by punching him a little harder than playfully in the arm.)
“I know a retired doctor who can help us—might even be able to knock the price down,” Killian said, somewhat casually. He had spread himself over the length of the sofa across from Emma, almost as if he was putting himself on display; not for the first time, her thoughts drifted back to their conversation the other night. She was still pretty ashamed of what she’d accused him of, but then again, he was the one flirting with someone he shouldn’t have been. Not like she’d done anything to dissuade him, but, you know, he started it. As to why she flirted back...she didn’t have time to think about that.
She could have just chalked it up to him being him: he was easily one of the most handsome guys here, and he clearly took pride in (or at least relied on) his appearance—his hair was perfectly tousled and his clothes were expertly tailored. He thankfully hadn’t adopted the outlandish style of dress typical of the Capitol that some victors had taken to; he simply wore a black waistcoat over a light blue shirt with a navy jacket and slacks (of course, his shirt was unbuttoned a bit lower than it should have been, revealing some of the dark hair that covered his chest). 
She couldn’t help it if she was affected by him, given that most were (probably even Graham). And she shouldn’t be reading anything into the charms he used on her; those were probably the only thing keeping him alive. If there was one thing she knew, it was playing a role.
At the moment, he was picking at a small plate of finger food. She wasn’t sure if it was purely out of utility, or just to show off, but he was stabbing each morsel with his hook before eating. So, all told, she found Killian Jones both endearing and annoying.
Given his lack of a sense of urgency, Emma leaned back against the cushions and glanced around the room, taking stock of the rest of the fallout from the firestorm. Large, red Xs appeared over the screens of the tributes who’d succumbed; “Looks like that took out the last tributes from Agrabah and Erebor.” If she needed any further confirmation, Leroy, the mentor from Erebor, grumpily cursed and headed out of the room. Only one other tribute seemed to be tending to wounds, though. “The kid from Sherwood got hit good, too.”
Killian’s gaze left the cheese cube on his plate and flashed up. “Which one?”
“Alice, I think.” She hadn’t been paying enough attention to which one was which. “Not the one with the bow; the other one.”
Suddenly, Killian was on his feet, eyes darting around the room. “Goddamit, Eloise,” he muttered, then held his hand out to her. “Come on, let’s go.”
She ignored his hand and stood on her own, grabbing her sweater and bag. “Lead the way.” 
He took off at a brisk pace, but Emma glanced behind her before they left; Eloise was nowhere to be seen, so he must have figured she was already on it. If his urgency was in order to beat the other mentor to the punch, then Emma was definitely on board.
When they met with the sponsor—an older woman who was clearly well-preserved by the Capitol’s plastic surgeons—Emma turned on her well-rehearsed show face, which had quickly become second nature. It was a bit of a struggle to keep it on when Killian was making plans with the woman for later, but she followed his lead; he didn’t seem too distraught or disturbed by it, even if the woman’s garish black-and-white hair was far from what she’d consider attractive.
They were easily able to convince this Doctor Cruella to pony up the needed meds—more than enough for both their tributes—and, prizes in hand, headed back to the game center.
“I don’t mean to upset you, Emma, but I think we make quite the team.”
“Oh yeah?” she tossed back, feeling a bit giddy. The value on that medicine was probably astronomical, especially with how much they got.
“Aye. With your smarts and my good looks, we could run this thing.”
“We’ll see,” she teased back. With him, it was way too easy to forget that they were literally responsible for children’s lives—and, at the end of the day, would be fighting against each other at some point. She wasn’t sure if that was good or bad.
Honestly though, they got along much too well. She didn’t know why that was a problem, but it was.
(Probably because of what she knew she was going to do later.)
Thankfully, nothing had changed when they got back to the game center; night was falling and things typically calmed down then, though not always. But the day had been exciting enough.
“Want me to send those off?” Emma offered, nodding at the small canisters in Killian’s hand.
Oddly, he looked sheepish, like he was hiding something. Now what was he up to?
“Uh, yeah—send this one,” he said, putting one in her hand. “But I was going to offer this one to Sherwood.”
Emma narrowed her eyes and could feel her magic licking at her spine in reaction to her sudden spike of anger; she took a breath to tamp it down before she said anything. “I thought…” She was going to ask him about her earlier hypothesis, but that clearly had been wrong. “I thought those were both for our kids?”
“One is more than enough to get them healed and then some, both of them. If we’ve got more, we may as well help out another realm who’s struggling.”
As poor as Sherwood was, Eloise had actually been doing decently on the sponsor end of things—or, at least, better than usual. Still, Emma had to wonder what kind of angle Killian was playing; briefly, her mind flickered to their first conversation, and the way he was staring at Alice’s screen the other day. 
“You know we can’t save all of the kids, right? Our priority is supposed to be our realm.”
Killian rolled his eyes at her. “You think I don’t know that? Darling, I taught you that. But no one ever said there wasn’t room for a bit of compassion.”
Compassion hadn’t won either of them their games; all it got Emma was a few more bricks around her heart.
“Look, her mentor is MIA and we shouldn’t just leave her to the wolves,” he continued. “Consider it a small act of rebellion, if you must. We may get turned down anyways, but at least we tried.”
Emma huffed; he was definitely appealing to her motherly instincts, which she’d been trying to put on mute while here. But rebellion...she could always get behind that.
“Fine.” 
He didn’t say anything; just turned and crossed the center to the game makers’ office. She tossed her bag on the sofa and rushed to follow, which was probably unnecessary because he let her go first when they got to the door. 
Everything that went in had to be inspected, though everyone knew that was merely a formality—people had sent weapons through before and no one batted an eye. (Something she was counting on.)
She was about to knock on the door when it swung open, taking Emma by surprise. Even more timely, Eloise was leaving. The expression on her face was somewhere between smug and annoyed—or maybe her face was just always that way? Either way, her eyes skimmed over Emma on their way to Killian. 
He stepped around Emma and held out the ointment. “Got this for Alice, unless you already took care of it.” It was rare for a mentor to actually enter the room until the end, unless there was an issue of some sort. 
“No, I didn’t.” Eloise’s tone was cool and indifferent. 
“It’s yours, then.” Killian was oddly serious. 
Eloise glanced down at it, then back up at him. “Send it yourself.” And just as cooly walked away.
Killian sighed in what Emma assumed was frustration, closing his eyes and gripping the container. There was clearly a history there Emma didn’t know about.
“What was that?” she asked. Regardless of whatever their history was, it was odd that a mentor would act so indifferent in the face of a valuable gift.
“Nothing new,” Killian muttered, before shaking his head and stepping forward.
The medicine was quickly approved and they were both given the opportunity to attach a note; Emma scribbled out a quick encouragement while Killian wrote something equally brief. God, that kid was probably going to be so confused, getting a gift from another realm. But she’d definitely appreciate it.
They ended up back on the couches, watching as well-trained birds delivered the packages they sent. (Emma honestly didn’t want to know how they always found their tributes—it probably had to do with the chip each tribute was implanted with, but she wouldn’t put it past Olympus to have something more sinister going on.) It was hard not to smile at the excitement from all three girls when they were delivered, and even Killian let out a sigh of relief. 
“Rebellion feels good, eh?” he teased.
She chuckled back, but answered with “Don’t let them hear you say that too loud. That’s a cursed word here.” She was trying to joke but they both knew it wasn’t far from the truth.
“Aye, I know,” he said, leaning back against the cushions. “I just get so...tired of it.”
“The Games?”
“Yeah. The death, the control. The parts of my life that have to stay hidden. The lies.” 
She definitely understood that.
“I know you know what I’m talking about,” he said pointedly.
But she didn’t appreciate being called out, and her hackles rose at the accusation. “Do you?”
He gave her a sidelong glance. “Please. I’ve been around you two for nearly a week now.”
She opened her mouth to argue, but had no idea what to say. It was easier to fake their romance when they knew they had an audience, but around Killian, she didn’t have it in her to lie—not about that. 
But she could evade it pretty well. “Yeah, well, what about you and Eloise?”
His brow furrowed. “What about her?”
“Is she some spurned ex-lover?” It maybe wasn’t fair to throw that back at him—again—but if there was one thing the games had taught her, it was that you couldn’t fight fair.
“I thought we were past that,” he answered, sounding slightly more hurt than she’d have liked. “But...something along those lines.”
“Did you break her heart?” She didn’t know why she needed to know. She just did.
“It’s more complicated than that, but no,” he answered truthfully. Then she watched as his armor slip back into place as he sat up and threw a coquettish look her way. “Why—are you jealous?”
“No,” she said, way too quickly and completely unconvincingly. (She was. A little. Dammit.)
Thankfully, he just replied with a deep chuckle, before leaning close enough that she could feel his breath on her neck. “Darling, if you want to get close to me, all you have to do is ask. No need to use propriety as an excuse.”
She squeezed a fist as she felt her magic react to him, trying to hold it back—but still, a glass broke somewhere on the other side of the room. One of the stewards picked up the shards and looked around, confused, which was Emma’s cue to get out for a bit.
Hastily, she stood up and ran her hands down her skirts, hoping to shake off the extra static. “I’m gonna take a walk; think you can man the fort for a bit?”
Killian followed. “I should actually tap out; Cruella is waiting.” But he remained close to her. “Can I follow you out?”
“Sure, I guess,” she answered, then didn’t wait for him to follow her out of the center.
They headed down the corridor in silence, Emma trying her best to keep distance between them. The butterflies she’d been feeling in her stomach whenever they got close like this returned, but that was the first time she’d risked exposing her magic because of it. It was kind of aggravating, honestly, how much that was happening—and that she had no idea what the exact trigger was: was it him? Was it just being in Olympus, and therefore in closer proximity to Neverland and its magic? Or was it related to what she had planned for later? Regardless, she needed to calm down.
She started rubbing her arms, either from cold or nerves—she wasn’t sure—but Killian noticed right away.
“Love, you’re shivering; here, let me—” He started to take off his jacket before she interrupted him.
“No, I’m fine; I just left my sweater back there.”
“I could try to warm you up, if you’d like,” he offered, with that all-too-charming grin and a seductive quirk of his eyebrow. Even if she knew it was for show, she couldn’t deny: it worked.
And tempting as it sounded, that was the last thing she needed. “I’ll just go grab it. You go on ahead.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah, I’ll be fine.”
“If you insist. Then I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Don’t have much choice, do we?”
She turned to head back—or to somewhere, just to walk—but then Killian grabbed her hand as she retreated. She wasn’t expecting it, and another shock let out, this time jolting him.
Shit.
Most of the time, she could play it off as static, but when she looked back at him, there was a wide-eyed expression of recognition on his face, first as he stared at where he was holding her forearm, then as he looked up at her. He knew.
“Don’t tell anyone,” she whispered.
He swallowed. “I won’t; you have my word,” was his solemn reply. “Especially if you don’t repeat what we said earlier.”
“I won’t.”
He nodded. “Until tomorrow, then.”
“Bye.”
They couldn’t get away from each other fast enough.
She ended up pacing the long hallway for a bit until she’d calmed down enough to go back in, but she knew she wouldn’t make it much longer; gods, sometimes she wished she had one of those magic-blocking cuffs, so she didn’t have to worry about being found out. At least one of the perks to being stuck in this castle was the fantastic baths and easy access to alcohol; even if it was the middle of the night, she’d have no trouble getting her hands on a glass of wine and a long, hot soak. But she had one thing to do first.
She slipped back into the game center relatively unnoticed; each of the few realms left had representation, but Ariel hadn’t yet arrived. And Emma didn’t know if she could face her once she did. She’d just have to hope the kids would be okay for a few minutes without anyone.
Her bag and sweater were still on the couch where she’d left them. She slipped her hand deep into her tote, feeling the smooth wood of the small hatchet she and Graham obtained earlier that day. What could she say? They’d learned from the best. They’d been saving it for the right moment, and she didn’t know if she’d get another.
Alliances couldn’t last forever. She knew that better than anyone. Which meant it was now or never for Tamara, especially with only 7 tributes left.
The door to the gamemaker office was ajar, so she slid in. “I have another sponsor gift,” she told the official at the desk, and pulled out the weapon.
The woman’s sterile expression turned stern as she inspected the tool. “I’m going to have to get this approved; hold on a minute.” Glancing over her shoulder, she called out, “Mr. Hatter? Can you take a look at this?”
The head gamemaker, Jefferson Hatter, was in the middle of a conversation with Sidney Glass, and held a finger up. Emma could hear him tell the other man, “We’ll make the announcement tomorrow. Excuse me,” before coming her way.
Jefferson assessed the weapon with a careful eye, pulling and tapping on it a bit to make sure nothing was concealed. “Looks fine to me. It can go.” Emma smiled to thank him, but he was already gone, off to deal with some other aspect of the games. She both loathed and envied his job.
“Alright, we’ll get this out. Did you want to add a note?”
“Yes, please.” The woman offered Emma a slip of paper and pen. She thought about it for a moment, and then began writing.

Alice screamed. 
Logically, she knew that was a terrible idea and a sure-fire way to draw an enemy. But, she figured, if anyone was actually close enough to hear her, then they were also caught in the firestorm and, well...they weren’t exactly her problem anymore. 
So she screamed, and she ran, trying as hard as she could to outpace the heat that was chasing her heels and nipping at her skin. In a rare moment of clarity, she’d pulled her shirt over her mouth and nose to prevent breathing in smoke, but the only other thing she could do was get away—fast. 
She ran and ran and ran, focusing only on the feel of the forest floor under her feet until suddenly, the world changed and she had to throw her hands up to stop from running face-first into a tree—which she promptly collapsed upon, coughing and wheezing to get her air back. 
She also may have vomited. But it served her right for thinking that any berries she’d found here would be edible; those had been giving her fits since last night. 
When she was finally able to breathe properly, she took stock of whatever she could. A glance behind her showed the fire was far enough away that she was in the safe zone—but how she’d gotten that far away, she wasn’t sure. 
She shivered, which was awful for two reasons: one, it made her suddenly very aware of the burned skin on the backs of her arms and legs; and two, it sent a static shock through her body that answered her question: her magic had carried her to safety. 
Dammit. She’d been doing so well. Er, rather, as good as could be expected when the very air sent her magic sparking.
Taking a deep breath, she tried to will it away, to calm it down, to press it back inside that pool of power deep within. But it was begging for release; had been since she got here, really. She’d always thought it was a tall tale that Neverland was filled with magic, but she’d felt it ever since she arrived—that tingle in her spine, the spark at her fingertips. She’d been doing as best she could to keep it in but it’d finally had enough, apparently. 
“Bloody hell,” she murmured to herself as more sparks fell from her hand, landing near the raw skin at her ankles and then making her hiss in pain. 
God. Fuck everything. 
It didn’t matter that she was still in the middle of the arena, with death and threats all around her; she fell to the ground, put her head in her hands, and cried. Well, sobbed. She’d been holding it all in for days now and was done. 
Just because she had genes that had won the games didn’t mean she was emotionally prepared to be here.
That, and she just kept seeing the way the boy from her father’s realm swelled up when he got stung by the pixees, coughing and sputtering as he tried to breathe but was going into anaphylactic shock. She hadn’t wanted to kill him; she just wanted his backpack. She didn’t know he was allergic. 
God, what had she gotten herself into? 
“You’re the cleverest person I know, Starfish,” her papa had told her before she’d left Olympus. “Trust your instincts and be smart.” She was trying, but was it enough? 
And now it felt like her skin was on fire and she was thirsty and what good were those heavy clouds in the sky if it wasn’t going to rain? She could bloody feel the static from the storm and that just added to her tension.
Her tears did nothing to soothe her skin but did wonders for her emotionally. 
When she was finally spent (or dehydrated; it was hard to tell), she took another long moment to look up at the sky. It’d been painfully obvious to her right away that the stars it showed at night were artificial; her papa had taught her to navigate by the constellations but there were none she recognized. 
Now, though, all she saw was a haze, smoke blending into storm clouds. She needed to get back on the move and find a source of water. The spring she’d been frequenting was probably now nothing more than a steaming crater in the middle of burned-out wood. 
Hauling herself to her feet was, well, a feat, and the more she moved, the more her skin stung and ached. She had a middling knowledge of herbal plants that had helped with the pixee stings (even if she hadn’t gotten the brunt of that one, they still hadn’t been keen on her disturbing their home), but nothing to help with burns, save for cool water. (At least she knew what dreamshade looked like and to stay the hell away. After what happened to her uncle, Papa had made sure of that.)
Which made her search all the more urgent. There was still a little left in her canteen but she knew she’d need that to drink. That meant her only option was to keep pressing on until she found some.
Eventually, she crossed a tiny stream that looked to be reasonably clear; it’d have to do. The cool water helped but wasn’t a complete balm—but what else was she going to do? At least she’d be able to keep the wounds clean and hopefully avoid infection.
There was a thick copse of trees just a few feet away; once she’d finished tending her burns and refilling her canteen (after many long, long gulps of water), she shuffled over and, after checking it over for dreamshade and finding none, collapsed inside it. Night was coming and she definitely needed to rest.
She’d just gotten kind of comfortable when a quiet tweeting started outside her makeshift shelter. Ugh, she didn’t want to get up again. But that sound could only mean one thing: a sponsor gift.
She’d gotten one earlier in the games, after a day or so without food: just a loaf of bread, but one she recognized as coming from her favorite bakery back home, with orange marmalade baked in. It was definitely a rare treat for the games, and possibly undeserved, but it’d given her the energy to keep going. (Which was when she found the spring.)
She poked her head out of her enclosure to see a small container sitting a few feet away, a deceptively slight songbird sitting nearby. It flew off once it saw it’d gotten her attention, back to wherever it was Olympus released the carrier birds from. With a wince, she got up, practically crawled the distance to the gift, then moved back inside as quickly as possible.
It wasn’t a large container, but it looked expensive. A note was taped on top; she peeled it off first and was both surprised and not to see that it didn’t have any words: just a small doodle of a starfish. Which meant this came directly from her papa. “Thank you,” she said into the night, hoping he’d see or hear her (and wishing she could say more).
She stashed the note in her pocket and fiddled with the jar to open it, taking way too long to figure out that the top twisted off, revealing a creamy white substance. She brought it to her face to sniff it—it had a vaguely floral scent—but leaned a bit too close to it and clumsily stuck her nose right in the stuff. Woops.
Almost immediately, though, she felt a cooling sensation on her skin. Did that mean…? She didn’t waste any more time in thought and took a modest amount on her fingers, then spread it on the raw skin of her opposite arm.
The effect was instantaneous, and she sighed in relief. For the first time in hours, that part of her body didn’t feel like it was still aflame. Quickly, she applied the ointment on all her other burns, careful to not use it all up but thrilled to finally feel better.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” she called out again. She didn’t know exactly how, but she could tell her papa was watching. Their last hug—in private, before the hovercopters took them to the arena—was impressed in her memory, and she could sometimes still feel the fatherly kiss he’d left on her temple. (Her mother...well, she’d shown as much affection as she was capable of, but it was definitely one of the more awkward hugs in her lifetime.)
God, what would her parents think of her now? Logically, she knew they’d be the last people to judge her, but she’d killed a person now; the pain in the boy’s dying screams would probably play in her dreams forever. Hell, it was starting to again; she put her hands on her ears to try to block it out, though it did little. This was no place to dwell on that, though; with any luck—as morbid as the idea was—she’d have a whole lifetime to. But she had to keep going forward, not looking back. 
Since she had a moment to breathe now, she pulled the bag into her lap and stashed the remaining ointment in one of the smaller pockets. Goodness, this really was a great bag: her jacket was a tattered, melted mess, but this thing barely had a scorch mark on it. She knew that kind of material existed—her realm was responsible for textiles, after all—but civilians never saw anything like this. Olympus bastards, hogging all the good stuff. 
Her brief moment of jealousy was interrupted by a jaw-cracking yawn, so she dug out the blanket the pack had come with, set the bag aside, and tucked herself in; it got bloody cold at night and the blanket just might be her favorite thing. 
She hadn’t even realized she’d fallen asleep when suddenly, it was daylight. Crap. Yeah, she needed the sleep, but that meant she missed the announcement of who had passed away during the previous day; she thought she heard a couple of cannons in the mess of the forest fire but she hadn’t encountered anyone since the boy from Atlantica, so she had no idea who it would be. 
Hopefully not Robyn. She hadn’t seen her, either; they’d been on opposite sides of the Apple Tree and had probably gone in opposite directions. From a logical standpoint, Alice’s odds were better if Robyn wasn’t still in the game—she was fierce with that bow, if she’d gotten one—but she liked her too much to wish she was gone.
And that kiss...her lips tingled at the thought.
(And her heart raced and butterflies flitted in her stomach and all those cheesy cliches that turned out to be cliches for a reason. She was Killian Jones’ daughter; of course she was a hopeless romantic.)
But following that train of thought into daydreams wasn’t going to help her at all. She stood and started to pack up, and noticed that her burns didn’t hurt anywhere near as much; a glance at her forearm showed it was mostly healed. Thank bloody goodness. 
After getting her blanket put away and a quick sip of water, she was in the middle of applying more of the burn cream when trumpets sounded overhead—the ones that usually accompanied the midnight death announcement. God, she’d been more tired than she realized if she managed to sleep through those blaring alarms.
“Attention tributes,” Sidney Glass announced. “There has been a recent change to the rules.” 
Alice tilted her head and looked at the sky, even though she couldn’t see anything but foliage; that never happened this late in the games. 
He continued, “If the last two tributes remaining are from the same district, they will both be crowned victors. Thank you, and remember: all magic comes with a price.”
Alice dropped the container of ointment. Seriously? If Robyn was still alive, they could go home together?
Blindly, she ran out from her hiding place and called out for the other girl. Not that she was going to get a reply, but that was her immediate reaction. Thankfully, no one else was around to hear her outburst, but the images of the remaining tributes were up on the screen—and Robyn’s was still there, right next to Alice’s. She couldn’t hold back her grin. (At least, not until her magic sparked her again.)
It looked like Phrygia still had two tributes in, too, so that was probably the most worrisome competition, though she thought she’d seen the girls from Atlantica and Misthaven together at some point. 
She was getting ahead of herself; would Robyn actually stand a better chance with her around than she would alone? What if she was already in an alliance? What if she didn’t actually want to share a win with her? (She didn’t think that would be the case, but it didn't take much for Alice’s mind to spiral.)
Whatever. It couldn’t hurt to try to find her. Not that she had any idea where to look, but she’d be damned if she didn’t give it a go. “A man who doesn’t fight for what he wants deserves what he gets,” her papa always said. “Well, woman,” he’d add, smirking.
Once she packed up, she headed in the direction of the central lake in the arena; at the very least, it would be a starting point, and with any luck, Robyn would have the same idea. 
She’d hardly gone a few meters when something on the forest floor caught her eye: a feather, white as snow. “That’s odd,” she said to herself. “There aren’t any birds here that look like that.” She’d seen all manner of bluebird, jay, and wren, but nothing so pure and bright as this. It reminded her of a swan’s, but this place was oddly devoid of waterfowl. 
Regardless, she tucked it in her pocket and set back off, imagining her movements were as graceful as that bird’s (and that, if the occasion called for it, she could be as fierce as one).
A couple hours later, she was near the lake, and on high alert; any open area was dangerous, especially this late in the games. Her tattered jacket was tied around her waist and her hair was in a messy braid; the heat was starting to become oppressive, but there was a charge to the air that kept reacting with her magic and making her wonder if a storm was coming.
She was staring at the sky, trying to figure out what the clouds were saying, when she was suddenly flying towards them. Her ascent peaked, and then she yelped as she fell back to earth, only to be jolted to a halt in midair by something that was as soft as it was constraining. She started to fight against it, looking for a weak point, and found many useless holes—it was a net.
“If you’ve got any last words, say them now,” a familiar voice shouted intimidatingly.
“Robyn? Is that you?” she answered, twisting in her restraints to see out.
“Alice?” Robyn called back, now in disbelief. “Shit. Hold on—I’ll get you out of there.”
Alice held still, not really sure what she was waiting for, when she heard the whizz of something flying towards her, followed by her actually falling to the ground; she was higher up than she’d thought and the wind was knocked out of her.
She laid there, taking gulping breaths of air, when Robyn swam into her blurry vision. “Oh my god, are you okay? I’m so sorry!”
“I’m fine,” Alice coughed, unconvincingly, but took one more deep breath before that was closer to the truth. “Where the hell did you get a fishing net?”
“It was in my pack,” Robyn shrugged as she helped Alice up to sitting. “It must have been meant for someone from Atlantica.”
“Okay, but then how did you learn to do...whatever that was with it?”
She gave a devilish smirk that set those butterflies alight in Alice’s belly. “Remember Alexandra, from school?”
“Yeah.”
“Remember how we had that feud that seemed to end very suddenly?”
She didn’t—Alice was definitely on the periphery when it came to classmate drama—but she could pretend. “Uh-huh.”
“Let’s just say when I got my revenge on her for stealing my first girlfriend, she spent a lot of time thinking about it. While suspended in midair.”
“Damn,” she sighed, but she was honestly more fixated on the ‘first girlfriend’ part of that statement. She couldn’t lie—she’d been worried Robyn might have just been placating her, or getting in some final kicks when Alice stole her kiss; she hadn't been certain Robyn liked girls, too. So at least that was one less thing for her jumbled mind to be anxious about.
And then any other fears were put to rest when Robyn launched herself at her in a bruising hug. “God, I’m so glad I found you,” she murmured into her neck, and Alice didn’t hesitate to wrap her arms around her, too. She closed her eyes at how perfect they seemed to fit together, even with the awkward way they were sitting. 
“Me too,” she whispered back.
“You heard the announcement?” Robyn asked without pulling away.
“Aye.”
“Wanna go home together?”
“Oh, fuck yes.”
Robyn giggled. “Then let’s do this.”
They helped each other to standing, brushed off the forest detritus, and then stared at each other for a long, charged moment, somewhere between intense and awkward (probably both). Because all Alice could think about, yet again, was the kiss, and if the way Robyn was licking her lips was anything to go by, she probably was too. Should she try it again? Was the ball in Robyn’s court? Should she not even be fucking worrying about it because they were literally in a fight to the death? 
At least Robyn didn’t seem as unsure as Alice, and cut through the thick air between them with a “Let’s go.”
Alice fell into step behind her, keeping an eye on both the path and the sky; the clouds were continuing to darken.
“What’s your count?” Robyn asked as they picked their way across the arena, vaguely in the direction of the lake. 
She didn’t need to ask for clarification, and shuddered again at the memory of the boy’s dying screams. “One. You?”
“Same,” she said. “It’s how I got the bow; off one of the kids from Arendelle.”
“Did you get them with the net, too?”
“No; they tried to shoot at me and missed. Turns out my aim is good even without the bow.”
There was a hint of regret in her voice that Alice could definitely identify with. She jogged ahead a bit and reached for Robyn’s hand, giving it what she hoped was an encouraging squeeze. Robyn looked down at their joined hands, then up at her, and the shy smile she gave was just a bit of sunshine in this gray day.
But then a big, fat raindrop hit her nose, making her gasp in surprise. Then Alice felt one on the back of her neck, dripping down her shirt—and it was cold.
They could hear drops falling on the dense foliage in a crescendo around them, and suddenly, they were caught in a downpour. 
“There’s a cave nearby we can hide in!” Robyn shouted, having to over the volume of the storm. 
Thunder rumbled overhead. “Lead the way!” Alice yelled back.
Robyn clenched her hand around Alice’s before letting go, and then they took off in a sprint back the way they’d came. They darted through the clearing where the net still sat in a heap on the ground, then turned and headed in the opposite direction from where Alice had come, hopping over fallen logs and trying to keep their footing over increasingly muddy terrain.
Alice was starting to shiver, but Robyn hadn’t slowed, so she couldn’t either. Her magic was still reacting to the static in the air, so she had to keep that tamped down, too, lest it carry her away again—and they needed to stay together.
Thunder and lightning continued to build as they went, and it felt like they were running towards the center of the storm. As if in confirmation, a bolt of lightning struck a tree not 100 yards from where they were; both girls screamed, but Alice managed to stay upright. Robyn, though, lost her footing and fell forward, then cried out again.
Alice caught up to her and offered a hand to help her up—but Robyn didn’t take it. “My ankle—I think I twisted it,” Robyn hissed.
So Alice did the next logical thing: she knelt down, got an arm under Robyn, and helped her back to standing. “How far away are we?”
“It’s just up there,” she nodded in the direction they were headed. “There’s a big rock formation; you can’t miss it.”
Much slower, they continued on, Alice taking extreme care with each step. It seemed to take forever, but eventually, there it was, almost looking like it had been cut perfectly from the overhanging rock—which it probably had.
It was deeper than it looked from the outside; more than enough to keep them dry. Alice carried Robyn to the far wall and helped her sit down, before both were finally able to catch their breaths.
“At least it’s not acid rain,” she quipped. Robyn gave her a tight smile back, but it quickly morphed to a grimace when she tried to move her leg. “Here; let me check it.”
Alice carefully stepped around Robyn and crouched down near her right ankle, the one that was injured. The light was dim this far in, and though she knew she could illuminate the space with her magic, she didn’t want to expose herself like that just now, if at all. 
“I’m going to touch it, okay?” she said, hoping that if she gave some warning, it’d hurt less. Robyn just nodded at her.
Gingerly, she brushed her fingers against the ankle, watching Robyn’s reaction. It didn’t change, but what was under her touch was far from what she expected. 
They were both soaked to the bone, but her skin was a different kind of wet, almost slimy.
“Oh, no,” she cursed, then jumped up to get closer to the light.
“What is it?” Robyn asked, but her voice was weak.
Alice only got close enough to the light to see what was on her fingers, but it was as she feared: blood. “Fuck.”
She ran back and, without thinking, created a ball of light in her palm; she needed to see what was going on.
And it was worse than expected: a long, jagged gash ran up the side of Robyn’s shin, and it was still trickling blood; Alice was no expert, but it looked deep, and probably had something to do with the ashy she could now see on Robyn’s face.
“You’re bleeding, badly,” she told her. “Do we have anything to sew it up?”
“W-wait,” Robyn stammered, as if she didn’t even register what she’d just been told. “You have magic?”
Alice gave a sheepish glance toward her hand, then back up at Robyn through her lashes. “Uh, yes?”
Robyn just gaped and blinked at her a few times, then her eyes rolled back into her head and she passed out.
Bloody fuck.

Jane Seymour has stayed with Henry long enough. Cue Catherine of Aragon and the rest of the girls to save her.
Cath asks Jane to dinner. Jane finally begins to come to terms with the fact that the woman she loves may very well be in love with her too. Kind of a fluffy chapter.
“Margaret! Marge!” John yelled through the house.
“John, what could possibly be so important that you have to interrupt my baking?” She emerged from the kitchen.
“Oh shit! I’ll come to you.” He followed his wife into the kitchen. “I just got off the phone with Cath, and let’s just say that you’re going to be paying up any day now!” He teased in a singsong voice.
“Oh I know,” Margaret sighed, fighting the urge to grin. At this point, she was ready to lose the bet so her daughter could finally be happy with the woman of her dreams.
“Yes you wi- wait. You know?”
“Yes. I just got off the phone with Janey. She told me she thinks she’s in love with Cath, and the lord himself knows that girl worships the ground our baby walks on. I’m still not giving you any money until I’m certain though,” she stated curtly.
“Did she tell you they’re going on a date tonight?”
“She told me it was only dinner, so I’m not admitting anything just yet.” She smiled smugly.
“Dammit woman.” He rested his hands on her waist.
“Don't you even think about it.” She knew what her husband was up to. “I have a cup of flour in my hand, and you’re cleaning it up if I drop it!”
“Well worth it,” John laughed as he tickled his wife’s sides.
Jane was running around like a chicken with its head cut off.
“Jane, what are you doing?” Kat walked into the blonde’s room as she watched the woman clad in a towel throw multiple articles of clothing around.
“Kat!” Jane whipped around, eyes wide. “You’re the perfect person to ask for help!”
“Oh!” Kat became excited at the idea that she was useful. “What’s up?”
“Lina and I are going to dinner, and Anna has it in my head that this might be a date and-”
“Finally.”
“What?” Jane raised an eyebrow.
“Don’t act like you just figured out that you two totally have a thing for each other.”
“Am I the only one who hasn’t known about this?”
“Yes!” Anna called from her room.
“Yes!” Cathy called from her room.
“Yes!” Anne laughed from behind Kat.
“Oh god,” The blonde muttered to herself. “I can’t find anything to wear.”
“You’re right. I’m just the person to ask.” Kat scavenged for an outfit for less than thirty seconds before she presented a look to Jane.
“That’s a bit revealing, isn’t it?” She eyes the low-cut top being handed to her. “And a little tight maybe?”
“You wouldn’t own it if you didn’t look good in it. And besides, you’re not showing yet, you still have the figure to wear it. Might as well be sexy for as long as possible,” Anne encouraged her to put the shirt on.
“Turn around,” Jane instructed. The two listened and she quickly changed into the outfit. “How does this look?” The cousins turned around and admired Jane in the gray blouse with tight fitting jeans.
“Wowza.”
“If this doesn’t have Cath drooling, I’ll be amazed.”
“Anne!” Kat exclaimed.
“What? I’ve seen Cath practically drool over Jane when she’s wearing sweatpants and has her hair in the messiest bun.”
Katherine and Anne were helping Jane with her makeup and hair while Catherine and Cathy lounged i n the living room.
“Okay, get out of here. I’ve got this from here,” Catherine shooed her younger cousin to her bedroom.
“Don't fuck this up Aragon,” Anna teased on her way out of the house.
“Hey Jane? I left something in the car. I’ll be back in a minute, and then will you be ready?”
“Yeah! Just finishing up,” Jane called from the room Catherine had been banned from.
“Okay. I’ll be back.” The older woman walked out of the house and proceeded to her car. Slowly, she sat down in the driver’s seat to prepare herself for tonight.
“Don’t fuck this up Cath,” she said to herself through the rear view mirror. “You’ve been waiting twelve years for this.” She checked the time: 5:55. Close enough. She grabbed the flowers she picked up a few hours before and jogged to the front door. Hesitantly, she knocked and immediately found her shoes quite interesting.
The door flung open, and Jane laughed, “Did you lock yourself out or something?”
“No, I came to ‘pick you up’ like I told you I would. I know I’m like five minutes early, and I’m sorry for that, but I couldn’t wait. You look-” she took in the blonde’s appearance. “Wow.”
“Thank you,” Jane blushed.
“These are for you.” Catherine handed her a bouquet of flowers.
“Lina.” Her eyes began to well up.
“What? What’s wrong? Did I get the wrong flowers?” She began to panic. “I’m sorry. I thought these were the-”
“No, they’re perfect. You’re so sweet. You remembered my favorite flowers from like, senior year.”
“Of course I do. Come on, I’ll take you to the car.”
She was running late the one day they actually needed to get to school on time. She saw Jane run to her car and jump in holding a bottle.
“Hey Lina. I’m so sorry.”
“It’s alright. What’cha got there?”
“Perfume.”
“Ah, that’s why you always smell so much better than everyone else. You actually bathe and use perfume. It all makes sense now,” Catherine joked.
“Haha, very funny. I didn’t actually put it on yet. I’m going to have to do it when we get to school I guess.”
“If you want, you can just put it on in here.”
“Really?” She looked genuinely surprised. “Henry never lets me do that.”
That’s because he’s an idiot, she thought before wisely saying, “I don't mind. It smells good anyway.”
“Thanks. I hope you don’t mind me spraying the scent of roses.”
“Your favorite flower?” She asked with a smile. Jane bobbed her head up and down.
“I’ll have to keep that in mind,” Catherine chuckled to herself.
She quickly ran ahead of Jane and opened the passenger door before helping her in.
“Thank you.”
“Of course.” Jogging to the driver’s side, she asked, “You ready and buckled? Precious cargo you know!”
“Very funny. Yes I am. Let’s go! I’m starving.”
The two were enjoying their dinner when Catherine broke the silence.
“So, I have to ask you something, and I don't want you to freak out.”
“Catherine-” Jane shifted in her seat. “If this is what I heard you talking about to my dad earlier,” she continued.
“You heard that?” Catherine began to panic; “How much did you hear?”
“Not much. Just enough to know that whatever your planning was okay to tell my mother.” She averted her gaze to the meal in front of her.
“Oh.”
“Yeah. Is this a date?”
“Well, no? I mean, kind of, but I never asked you as a date. I really think we should be together, but not until you’re ready. I know you’re dealing with a lot right now, and I’ve waited for twelve years. I can wait a little while longer.”
“I love you,” Jane blurted out.
“Of course I love you too. I thought you knew that.”
“Apparently I was the only one who didn’t know. Anna kind of made me realize today that it was really. Up until a few hours ago, I thought it was all in my head.”
“It definitely isn’t, but that’s not what I wanted to talk about tonight. I wanted to ask you if I could be there for you and the baby when it arrives. I just didn’t know how to- why are you crying?”
“You’re just so sweet and so good to me, and I’m such a bitch! I eavesdropped on your conversation, and I assumed things. I have no clue why you’re putting up with me. I’m so sorry. I have to go to the bathroom and get myself together.”
“Okay, but when you get back we need to talk about this.” Jane nodded and sped away to the bathroom.
After twenty minutes, Catherine was still waiting patiently for Jane to return. It was clear the blonde needed some space, and despite her concern, she waited.
“Ma’am?” a waiter with a water pitcher approached.
“I’m okay, thank you,” she replied, assuming the man was offering her some more water.
“No ma’am. The woman that came in here with you is in the bathroom violently ill. I was told to come find you.” By the end of the waiter’s sentence, Catherine had already taken off in a sprint towards the bathroom.
“Ma’am, you really shouldn’t go in there,” an employee who was unaware who Catherine was warned.
“I’m the one she came with.” The employee stepped out of the way and allowed her to go in.
“Janey, are you okay honey?” When she heard no response, she walked in a little further, the foul smell of vomit hitting her.
“Janey,” she sighed as she found the blonde with her head in the toilet.
“I think I’m done. Can we please just go and forget this happened? I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. Come on.” Catherine scooped the woman into her arms, and the two made their way towards the main entrance of the restaurant.
“Ma’am,” an employee tried.
“I’ll be back tomorrow to pay for the food, but right now-”
“We took the liberty of boxing all the food, and it’s on the house tonight. We hope your partner feels better soon.”
“Thank you very much.” The employee secured the bags over Catherine’s wrist, and the two made their way towards the car.
“We need to talk about our situation later. We have to sort everything out before more things start to happen,” Jane mumbled.
“Of course sweetie. Anything. Front or back?”
“Front.” She allowed Catherine to lower her into the front seat before muttering, “I’m going to sleep.” The woman fell into a more peaceful state than she was in a few minutes before.
“So,” Cathy drew out from across the room after Catherine had set Jane up in their bedroom. “I guess it didn’t go too well? You guys came back pretty quickly.”
“It could’ve gone better. I found out she overheard my conversation with her dad. She did admit that she loves me, but that conversation quickly ended when she started crying and then twenty minutes later I was carrying her out because she was puking.”
“It’s something though?” the younger cousin tried.
“I guess.”
“At least she didn’t straight up reject you,” Anne quipped.
“Thank you Anne for yet another encouraging comment,” Aragon deadpanned.
“Anytime Cath. Anytime.”
“Okay but seriously, it’s about time you two got it together,” Anna added.
“Well, we’re not together yet. I told her I’ve waited twelve years, and I can wait a little longer. I know she has a lot on her plate right now, and the last thing I want to do is overwhelm her with a new relationship.”
“Did you like the outfit she was in?” Kat asked out of curiosity and also hunger to know that she had picked the right look.
Catherine swallowed awkwardly before whispering, “She looked stunning.”
“Did you drool?”
“No Boleyn. I did not drool.”
“Bullshit. I’ve seen you drool over the woman when she’s in sweatpants and looking homeless.”
“I can’t help that she just always looks beautiful.”

Organ’s Out Of The Bag | Morgan & Erin
Summary: Morgan interrupts Erin at work, eats her organs, and learns about the family trade.  When: Week of 5/4 Featuring: @mor-beck-more-problems​
There wasn’t a “How To Operate An Illegal Organ Trafficking Business For Dummies” book to help Erin work out the best system for organizing and storing frozen organs. Shocker. Buying a second industrial cooler would have been as expensive as it was suspicious, which made trial and error the only real option. It was tedious, and there was probably still a better way, but she’d found her groove. Hollowed, block-like shelving units had been attached to the far end of the wall. Other items were stored on top but she could lift the face of each one, almost like a locker, to fill and empty as needed. Only she knew where the latches were and only she could open it. A small feat, sure, but you had to take your wins where you could get them. Maybe she was finally getting the hang of this? That was a thought that should have sat more uncomfortably on her mind or deterred the smirk on her lips. If she had a spare moment at all, it wasn’t for that kind of introspection. 
With her music loud and her focus set, she made quick work of it. Saran Wrap, label, and onto the next. Just another Tuesday. One more load to go and she could break for dinner. A figure filled the doorway when she turned, startling her backwards while some instinctive part of her reached for the knife in her back pocket. “Jesus Christ, Morgan…” she huffed out, freezing before she pulled out the blade. “You scared the shit out of me. What—“ she narrowed her eyes, her panic doubling in that moment. “You’re not allowed down here.”
After the video incident, Morgan hadn’t expected Erin to be someone who was okay with hanging out with her newly dead and only semi-feeling self. But aside from the body horror, Erin thought she was ‘cool’. Maybe Erin lived with death in a way that kept her from feeling it. Maybe it wasn’t a tar pit for her. Maybe it didn’t even pull, but could just...sit its ass down and let her be. Erin had her life pretty together, right?
Morgan traipsed up the entrance of the Nichols’ house since Erin had said she could just come in, but there was no sign of her, or any life going on in the house. So she turned instead to the lower levels where they had passed through for the ritual. She found her bent over a table with...organs. Bags and bags of organs. Morgan stayed put, hand over her stomach, her mouth watering. At least one of those was a heart, and those were thick enough to remind her of meat sometimes. But there was the whole other question of what they were doing here. Morgan didn’t know a lot about mortuary work, but there were too many different kinds laying around near each other for it to have anything to do with her ‘clients’. And if it wasn’t that, than maybe--
Erin turned just as Morgan reached for a bag of brains and a pair of eyeballs. She smiled, bright and sheepish. “Hi…” She drew out the greeting as long as possible. “We had plans. You said I could come and show you more weird zombie things?” Her gaze slid sideways to the table. Stars, it all looked so good. “I knocked, you didn’t answer,” she went onto explain, popping one of the eyeballs in her mouth and chewing thoughtfully. “And since I already knew my way around…” She shrugged and swallowed the eyeball, popped the other one into her mouth, doing her damnedest to savor it before she stuffed the whole table into her mouth. “So, anyway, what’s with all the random dead organs on your table?”
Fuck. Erin had completely forgotten about their plans. Not that she wasn’t excited for some extreme body horror and manipulation. Between the lack of sleep, the mimes lurking around every corner, and maintaining her day and night jobs, things were slipping through the cracks. “Sorry,” she shook her head, moving to turn the music off. “I got caught up in--” she started to explain, until she was watching Morgan pop an eyeball into her mouth like she was sampling an appetizer. It wasn’t bad enough that Morgan saw the goods, she had to snack on them too. Five minutes in and she was already out a couple hundred bucks. This was off to a hell of a start. “Stop that!” She ran for the table, collecting the rest of the saran-wrapped organs in her arms. Fuck. Fuck. “I was about to put them away,” she answered, aware that it was more of a nonanswer. “They’re not hors d'oeuvres so can you just--try to refrain?” She huffed, moving to the freezer. Glanced back, unable to feel just a little uncomfortable at the thought of being alone with an apparently snacky zombie. “I thought you just were into brains, anyway?”
Morgan backed away from the table, frowning as she cradled her snacks to her chest. “This is me trying!” She whined, mouth still half full. This wasn’t a good time to wonder if whatever species this had come from actually tasted better than the rabbit eyes she normally had, but the pull in her, the wanting, was so much she closed her eyes to enjoy the last gummy chunks sliding down her throat as she finished it off. “Um, so, funny story? Brains make my world go round, but dead bodies and viscera are like...well I never did even soft drugs when I was alive, but I can’t help myself. I’ve stuck my face straight into a dead baby deer. It’s like true love...in uh, you know, gross...foodie sort of way.” She swallowed the last of the eyeball, feeling embarrassed. Then she remembered that Erin was the one with the zombie buffet on her table. “You never answered my question. What are you doing with the zombie buffet on your table? This doesn’t look all that much like Funeral Director of the Year stuff.” She opened the brain bag and started to munch on that next.
Erin couldn’t help but stare with vague fascination as she watched Morgan explain herself, chewing on a half eaten eyeball. “I’ll try to remember that next time, then,” she winced a little, watching her money go right down Morgan’s throat. Nothing that could be done about it now, anyway. Flustered a little at the question, realizing Morgan wasn’t about to let up. “Well--I was saving that one for you anyway so, please. Enjoy,” she nodded towards the human brain she was already feasting on. A little sarcastic considering she was helping herself again but more genuine than not. Fuck. This wasn’t at all how she’d anticipated this little visit to go. With a long sigh, she pulled her rubber gloves off. “It’s--complicated,” she said hurriedly, clearing her throat. Had she ever actually straight up told anyone about this? Nic, Marley--hell, even Nell just knew. No explanations had been necessary. “And I’m a damn good funeral director. This doesn’t change that.” Her fingers tapped on the silver table and she eyed her carefully. “If I tell you, this stays between us, right?” Morgan was smart enough to probably figure it out at this point, but the assurance didn’t hurt.
Morgan continued to frown, miffed that she was on the pointy end of the sarcasm stick when she had been asked to come. What was she supposed to do, stay at the door all night and go home sad? But Erin seemed frazzled beyond being interrupted. Morgan’s dig at her above-board job proved that too. Morgan was even beginning to feel bad. She tilted her head, trying to get a better read on Erin. “I’m a zombie, Erin. I know all about awkward secrets to keep.” She started to edge closer, plucking a chunk of brain matter off to chew on. And, holy shit, she had to know how long this one had been left sitting and at what temperature, because it made her taste buds melt like burgers used to--but there were more important things to deal with. Erin had some kind of organ stockpiling problem, and maybe a ‘oops my friend knows I’m into some weird, sketchy looking shit’ problem. “If it helps, it looks like you’re running some kind of under the table organ pantry. So either I’m right, and I just made your job easier for you, or I’m wrong, and you have even more reason to correct me. But...you just saw me eat eyeballs and I used to sell people shiny rocks I transmuted out of garbage. I’m really not gonna judge.”
Erin chewed on the inside of her lip as Morgan spoke. Yep. Of course she figured it out. What the fuck else was a mortician doing with a bunch of unlabeled organs saran wrapped in the embalming room? All signs pointed to shady. This was entirely her fault, which bothered her the most about this whole thing. She fucked up. Forgot their plans. Something had to give, eventually. It was bound to. Juggling businesses, murderous mimes and actively trying to not be a shitty friend was a dangerous game. But she trusted Morgan, as much as that was worth. Had to, considering how calmly she was chewing on Mr. “Mr. Reid’s dearly departed brain, after taking out his eyeballs in less than five minutes flat. “Organ harvesting and trafficking, actually,” she corrected her, taking a deep breath after she said the words out loud. Just rip the bandaid off, right? Felt wrong on her tongue for more reasons than she cared to think about. “It’s--” she shook her head, glancing down at the table again for a moment, then forced herself to stare back up at Morgan. Fingers thrumming against the table again, her nerves alight. “My dad got into it before I took the business over and I got stuck with it because he couldn’t handle it. Please believe me when I say this isn’t something I ever wanted.”
Oh. Oh, this was something serious. Was Morgan still a person who knew how to take on serious things with new people? She was feeling okay today. Sort of float-y in a way that made a distant part of her worried, but she wasn’t tired. Not like she was on other days. But this whole—thing Erin was tearsely explaining wasn’t something looked suddenly less like a dirty secret and more like a two ton brick she’d been hauling for too long. Morgan could at least understand that feeling, even if the rest of the situation confused her. “Shit,” she said. “That explains some of the vague trauma you mentioned. I can’t even imagine…” She stepped closer, more confident now that she wasn’t in trouble, “Can ask if—I mean, is it going well? Are you...going to be okay?”
Relief came with the confession like an exhale. A momentary reprieve to that tension knotting in her chest for months now. The inhale felt just as horrible as it always had. The knot settled back where it knew it belonged in Erin’s chest. Morgan wouldn’t judge. She wouldn’t rat her out. But there was something unsafe about having it out in the open like this. A little bit of control was gone and that almost felt worse than the deed itself. “Good as it can be, I guess? It was a little rocky at first but--I’m getting there.” She tossed on a smile, raising a brow at Morgan. “Don’t worry about it. Just try not to eat my merchandise? Those eyeballs you demolished set me back a couple hundred dollars,” she teased, a chuckle in her voice to hide the very real pain there. Dale was a good scapegoat for that kind of thing anyway--the big oaf was as heavy handed as they came. She leaned against the table, glancing between the brain in her hands and Morgan’s gaze. “Is… that your first human brain?”
“Oh. Oh, shit!” Morgan cried, face dropping with dismay. “I really couldn’t help it. That’s not just like, me being weird. I can probably get Deirdre to reimburse you? I don’t have to mention the eyeballs, or the brain, if you don’t want, but I uh...don’t think she’d mind it either.” It was a little too late with the brain, so Morgan took a sheepish dip back into the bag to pull off another chunk. It was halfway up to her mouth when Erin said the word human. Morgan looked down at the brain again. “Oh,” she said, voice squeaking. “So that’s why it tastes so good.” She continued to stare at the brain. From the size of it, she probably should’ve known it wasn’t just some deer. But holy shit. You’d think there’d be fanfare or at least a good shock of agony over baby’s first lite cannibalism. But it had just been a really yummy brain, no more interesting than another until she’d tasted it. “Uh...yeah. If that’s what this is...yeah.” Was it bad, that it didn’t mean anything to her? That the only thought she’d had was how yummy? Sure, deer and raccoon and cow brain were nice. But this was steak. Or cheesecake. For all that it looked the same, the taste was enough to have let her feel good about something while she’d chewed. Then another question came to her. “Not to be gross, but are these...was this…” she jiggled the bag in her hand. “...One of your clients?”
“No, no, it’s okay,” Erin finally gave a genuine laugh, shaking her head. Was that one of those zombie quirks? Like how amputated body parts turned to goo? “I actually really was saving that brain for you.” She had to admit, she was a little surprised at Morgan’s hesitation. This was a funeral home. No way she could’ve thought animal brains were more readily available than an actual human’s. Didn’t deter her, she noted, when her fingers dipped back into the bag. “Well,” she said, starting to pull off her blue scrubs, raising a brow. “My clients have some organs to spare. Waste not, want not?” She offered with a shrug. It was more difficult than she anticipated to keep her eyes off of Morgan. She looked the same, and if it wasn’t for the brain food she was gobbling down, it would’ve been impossible to see anything different about her. But she was eating a human brain. She knew what happened to some of the parts that left her basement, but this was the first time she’d witnessed it first hand. “Doesn’t bother you, does it?” Another pause as she tried not to overtly stare anymore. “You know, I swear I didn’t invite you over for this but--if that’s something you think you’d want on a regular basis, I can definitely help you out.”
Morgan looked down at the brain. She was still waiting for the horror to set in, but mostly she was worried what Remmy would say, or Deirdre. She’d only given her animal brains so far, not even an offer or a suggestion of anything else. They wouldn’t blame her for an accident, but liking it, enjoying it---Morgan saw herself split and cracked between two lenses. One monstrous, one that simply was. ‘Don’t eat the humans’ was the number one thing she heard from hunter types. It was even a question she remembered asking herself. Do they eat people? Do they hurt people? As if it made them inherently better, safer, if the answer was “right.” But here she was, some poor guy’s insides already in her stomach. And as much as she was troubled, it took effort to maintain. “B-bother?” She asked. Shrugged. “Does it bother you? You seem pretty chill with me eating in front of you, all things considered. I mean, would you really….supply that sort of thing? For me?”
There was some kind of internal struggle going on behind Morgan’s eyes. Was this weird for her too? She’d been snacking on them like Erin was going out of business. “I don’t know, maybe I should be more bothered,” she shrugged, running a hand through her hair. “But I fished them out of the guy, you know?” Maybe it was like how a butcher didn’t have any trouble selling even the most obscure parts of the cow. In this case, she was simply more familiar with the human body. “Doesn’t bother me,” she confirmed, giving her a smile to cement that. “Brains are a little more expensive, just so you know. But yeah. This is what I do. It wouldn’t be a problem at all.”
“You...did all this yourself? And the guy still looked like himself at the end? With the--” Morgan motioned to her skull. “I’m usually in a weird...zombie haze whenever I’m eating out in the wild, so things like being careful don’t really make it into the thought process. But...bones are hard. If you get it really wrong, you get a bunch of gross pointy bits in the food. Worse than eggshells in your fried rice. What do you do to get to the stuff and humpty-dumpty them back together?” But something else snagged her mind more than her curiosity, pulling her back. “You really mean it? About the not weird and the...supply? Just, you know, for sometimes? Really?” She wondered how expensive Erin was talking here.
“The brain’s usually always taken out during an autopsy, along with the rest of the organs.” Erin explained. “They all get tossed into the visceral bag, which then gets tucked into the stomach cavity. Makes my job easier because then all I have to do is take them out and pack them up.” This would make the whole process way slower and harder if she had to go in every time and dissect them herself, she knew that much. Her brows furrowed at the thought of Morgan out there in the woods, running around and crushing animal skulls. “Yeah, I mean it. Can’t have you out there chasing after squirrels or whatever all the time, right?” Wasn’t exactly inconspicuous. She shrugged. “My boss usually likes to charge a higher fee but I don’t mind cutting costs. For friends,” she smiled.
“Oh, wow. That’s...one way to do it.” Morgan realized with unsettling clarity that she had never thought of the mechanics of death before. When she had lost her parents and her friends, she had been too wrapped up in the loss and unfairness of it to remember there was something practical, even mechanical to death. Even in humans, with the rituals and the preservation that kept the flies and maggots at bay, there was something. A process detached from all that they had meant before the last breath went out. It wasn’t bad, or hurtful, it was simply...after. Morgan came out of her thought to look at Erin, steeped her whole life in this strange, thankless care. It was essential, even as it rattled and stung the rest of the world, her clients. She didn’t even have much of a chip on her shoulder about it, she just continued, and found a way to make “after” work for other people too. Well, maybe not “found,” but she was still at it. And now that the shock of discovery had worn off, she didn’t seem that ashamed about it. A rush of endearment filled her and she ran to Erin, brain still jiggling in the bag and pulled her into a crushing hug. “Thank you, Erin,” she said. “You’re a really good friend, you know that?” She lingered there a moment, trying to fix words to how...fine all of this seemed. Not normal, they wouldn’t be hiding in a basement if it was normal, but fine. She pulled away, backing up to hop on the table, taking another handful of brain. “You wouldn’t have heard from somewhere about how human brains taste, would you? I feel weirdly like...playing board games. And listening to the radio. Like there’s a hockey game on? I don’t like hockey, but if you know where to put one on--” She gave a thumbs up and took another bite of brain. “But, also, I’ve lost my foot like twice this week. If you wanted to check out weird things my bones can do still.”
Erin looked up just in time to brace herself for the shorter woman hurling herself at her. “Oh, you’re--,” she huffed out a laugh, genuinely struggling to catch her breath. For a moment it felt like she had just ran into a wall with arms. “You’re welcome,” she finished, briefly wrapping her arms around her. Morgan was a lot of things Erin was still trying to properly grasp, but she was a good one. Chaotic, but good. That much she did know. She held her hand to her chest when Morgan pulled away, laughing despite herself. “I’ve never thought to ask,” she answered honestly, leaning against the same table Morgan was perched on. “How does it taste?” When she started to prattle on more questions, things so specific to the man in the ziploc bag in her hands, she couldn’t help but stop in her tracks. “Don’t tell me you’re suddenly craving a tall, crisp IPA now too?” She asked, glancing back and forth between Morgan and the bag. His widower had carried on about the man’s favorite things to her just that morning before crying into her shoulder. “You don’t mean you’ve literally lost your foot, right?” As soon as she asked the question, she couldn’t help but realize how very wrong she probably was.
Morgan shrugged. “Rich. Like, a good medium-rare burger. Or like, cheesecake? It’s good. Rich. My mouth is literally watering eating it.” She took another bite. “Ew, IPA? No, I mean, I can’t taste anything anymore, but I came from Houston, and our beer culture is way to evolved for an IPA. “Mr. Reid drank IPA’s,” Erin corrected, a slow smirk on her lips as she watched her. She didn’t have any particular thoughts about beer. Beer was beer. Some of it was good, some of it was bad, but it all got the job done in the end. She couldn’t help but stare as Morgan seemed to crush her toes, then flexed them back into shape again. “Whoa,” she said in genuine amazement. An idea sparked and she turned, digging into one of the cabinets. “Yeah, over there,” she said, pointing towards a radio across the room. She pulled out one of her biggest, thickest trocars. This wouldn’t hurt her right? Erin smiled, raising a brow. “Hey--can I try something?”

The X-Jet roars over the Lazarus Headquarters – a large metallic building coasting over the side of a preserved mountain range.
NTW leans forward from her seat next to Colossus – as he pilots the X-Jet – and peers over the front glass panel. But before she can say anything, she feels a Deadpool looming over her shoulder.
‘’Wow. Don’t think they have any parking available,’’ Deadpool quips, leaning with a casual arm draped over the top of her seat. 
Cable rolls his eyes from his seat.
‘’Wade, please get back and strap yourself on to seat for your own safety,’’ Colossus calmly instructs, eyes never leaving the sight in front of him.
‘’I’d like a different kind of strap, tinman – but that’s only after you buy me dinner. Also, don’t you for a second think I wouldn’t try to fit a cockpit joke in there, because I just want you to know th– ’’
Deadpool’s sentence was cut off as the cabin jerked to the side from a disturbance, sending him hurtling and falling flat against the side of the cabin.
As he rubs the sore part of his head, he notices Colossus snickering from his seat – ‘’You fucking did that on purpose!’’
‘’It is cloudy day. Turbulence was inevitable, Wade. I told you to wear belt.’’
Cable titters as he looks ahead at Colossus, ‘’Didn’t know you had it in you, Colossus. Good job.’’
NTW laughs heartily at the sight, ‘’That’s some good karma. And anyway, before I was interrupted by doucheface, I think this HQ was probably designed to only be accessible to helicopters. Colossus, you might have to let us off and land somewhere nearby.’’
‘’Yes, very good observation NTW. Soon enough, you too can be Pilot of X-Jet. There was an airbase that I saw not too far from here. I will be there. Please radio me if you need extraction,’’ Colossus directs the team as he adjusts his headset. He flicks the tab on the panel of controls in front of him, releasing the jet’s back door from its’ closed position.
Deadpool cracks his knuckles – and then does the same to his neck – in a showy fashion.
‘’It’s go time, muchachos.’’
‘’Wade! Please wear a para–‘’
And as in Deadpool fashion, he lets himself fall backwards – hurtling down to the Earth without a parachute.
Cable sighs, grabbing an extra parachute from the racks – ‘’I’ll take care of that.’’ – as he makes his jump off the end of the platform.
There was someone waiting to meet them at the landing area, as Cable and Deadpool make their contact to ground. Cable held his face in a disgruntled deadpan look, as Deadpool hung onto his torso with arms and legs wrapped around him.
‘’Are you done?’’
‘’What? I couldn’t get the parachute on.’’
‘’If you don’t get off of me in the next 5 seconds – ‘’ Cable mutters with a low voice, his hand motioning to grab his submachine gun.
‘’Alright! Alright! I’m off now!’’ Deadpool remits as he climbs off of Cable, laboriously slowly.
The person waiting on the landing grounds had been observing the whole tirade, with an incredulous look on their face. Cable ignores the moments of before and gets right to it.
‘’You got what we need?’’
‘’Yeah. I’m sticking my neck out for you. But I don’t give a shit about either the fucking bitch or the boss she works for.’’
A flash of recognition blights Cable’s TO eye.
’’I remember you. You’re the shitface that shot Colossus in the back. The prick from the helicopter.’’
The man chuffs. But Cable’s stare bears into him, cracking his knuckles as he does.
‘’I have some choice words for you, but I won’t count on me using my words.’’ – NTW holds a cautionary arm in front of Cable – and he lets off.
The man remains slack, and holds out the drive between his thumb and index finger.
‘’Everything you need to know is in this thumb drive. Address and real names are encrypted data – but it should be easy enough for you to decode that on your own,’’ the man eyes Cable intensely and before – as Cable reached out to take the drive – in one swift move, flicked the drive and caught it in a fist.
‘’But I need something from you first.’’
NTW walks ahead, just ahead of Cable.
‘’We’re listening.’’
‘’I want out. New name, location, papers. For me and my family. I want to be untraceable within the next 2 days.’’
‘’That should be easy enough. If you aren’t stupid.’’
The man scoffs – ‘’Yeah, and if you aren’t stupid, you wouldn’t antagonize that only lead you’ve had in months. Talk about stupid.’’
NTW rolls her eyes, and Cable steps forward to bring a satisfactory end to the negotiations.
‘’Alright. I’m sure we could arrange for that. Now,’’ he holds his arm out for the drive.
The man seemed to hold back at first, but quickly dropped the drive onto Cable’s open palm.
‘’We will send you your new papers once we’re done. You’re in good hands.’’
The man scoffs again. ‘’I don’t believe in there ever being a good side. You fight only for your own interests. You wouldn’t even be here if not for the information that I got for you.’’
Deadpool yawns and stretches dispassionately, ‘’Yeah, yeah. You’re a hack, we get it. We’ll see you next week, champ.’’
The team turns back, with NTW radioing for Colossus to pick them up.

Your phone buzzes with messages from Piotr; asking about your day, if you’ve eaten, if you’re busy. With the amount of time the man sets aside to check up on you, you never would have guessed he was an X-Man.
His replies don’t always come quickly though – sometimes it takes him ages, and he always apologises for it (no matter how much you’ve tried to reassure him that you understood); but it kept in line with his previously claims of being a firefighter.
You grab your phone off the table, hurriedly setting your phone on mute.
You shift your focus back to your computer; eyes still stinging from the hours spent trying to book flights and layovers for D.K.
It would’ve been much easier if you were just booking flights though.
You had hired a few bodyguards (you’ve previously met many of them from working in the field, but few you knew you could absolutely trust) – and they were to help D.K. through his trip and make sure he was safe. Though they all had the condition that they would operate from a distance.
None of them were willing to fend off against your Boss if it meant putting their lives and livelihoods in jeopardy – and you understood that for the most part.
You close your eyes for a minute, letting yourself rest from the demands of the world.
As you lay back against the couch, you envision your sleepy mornings with Piotr – oh how you wished you could be there now; with you starfished on top of him – sometimes clothed, most times not – as his fingers drew slow blissful lines over your back, before running reassuring strokes with slow, long strides of his calloused palms.
Calloused palms which you grew to love, because they were his.
When you looked up at him from your position, he would never fail to give you a smile – with sweet, supple lips that would tell you ‘’I love you’’ a million times if you asked – and would kiss you instead if you didn’t.

The hours rolled by, uninterrupted – when a sudden urgent knocking sounds at your door.
Your face turned quizzical.

You quickly head over to your room and grab your electric baton.
When you reach your door, you try to put an eye onto the peep hole, but the person on the other end starts knocking aggressively again, making you flinch back. You press your face over the keyhole, and look for who was outside your door so late.
When you realise who it was, you breathe a shaky breath of relief, but your heart rate only picks up from there. Your hands move swiftly to unlock the door and greet your visitor.
‘’Piotr? It’s 3am… What are you doing here so late?’’
‘’I’m sorry, Y/N. You were not responding to your calls… and I grew concerned. I was coming back from work, and thought I could check up on you.’’
Your heart was both elated, and sinking at the same time. You try not to make eye contact with him for too long. Whenever you did, you felt as if he could see right through you.
‘’Yeah, I was just… busy. I was going to call you back.’’
‘’Okay… May I come in?’’
You hesitate, and the uncomfortable look on your face stings at Piotr.
‘’It’s not that I don’t want you here, Piotr – its just that… I’m working on a case right now with a client over the phone. It wouldn’t be professional, and I wouldn’t be able to concentrate.’’
‘’I.. Yes, I understand, myshka…’’ he rubs his neck, trying to hide his embarrassment, ‘’I’m sorry for having interrupted your work… I will wait for when you are free next time.’’
It took all you had to not just pull him closer to you – to show him that he was loved and needed and wanted around.
But the jury doesn’t call for that.
You bite your lip, ‘’okay, get home safely, Piotr.’’
He gives you an awkward nod, before walking away from your door as it shut.

The room sits still, waiting for you to make a move as you stand leaning against your bedroom door. Your breathing becomes jagged and heavy as your heart thuds against your chest, and as you do, there's the wetness that escapes your eyes – demanding to burn down your hot cheeks.

There isn’t much left for me. The sooner I let this go, the better for everyone involved.
You head to the bathroom, rinsing your face off – then drying it off with a towel. You face yourself in the mirror; eyes red and swollen.
You abandon the face in the mirror – striding over to your study room, grabbing a pen and paper;
And in that page, you let yourself be free.

Rook knew something was up when she saw the flashy black Cadillac pull up next to the fenced in field they were working in. If that hadn’t been enough, the stunned look on Jacob’s face would have been. Jacob wasn’t a man easily astonished. Knowing what she did about the Seed family, she guessed the car must belong to the wealthy and elusive John, lawyer for the Church at Eden’s Gate.
When Jacob gave her a questioning look, she nodded and waved him over, watching him walk briskly away. John was shorter than Jacob, with the same dark hair as Joseph, wearing slim black pants, a blue silk shirt, and sunglasses, despite the overcast day. Rook would’ve bet money they were designer. From what Jacob had told her, John’s adoptive parents were not only religion obsessed, abusing pieces of shit, they’d also been fabulously wealthy, and, as their only son, John had inherited every penny. At least he got something good out of the deal, even if having decent parents would have been better.
From his stiff body language, Rook could tell John wasn’t altogether happy about being there, but at least he was there. Jacob had been torturing himself about the situation since the night they’d left Faith and Joseph’s house. In his mind, the fact that he did the best he could in a difficult situation didn’t matter as much as the fact that John saw the situation as entirely Jacob’s fault. If she hadn’t promised herself she’d stay out of it, she’d have given John a piece of her mind.
She went on with the rest of the training for that day alone, only mildly concerned when Jacob had gotten in the car with John and left. He’d texted her some time later to say that Joseph had asked John to bring him to the church, so the three of them could sit down and talk ‘in God’s presence’. Though Jacob himself wasn’t a believer, she knew he’d do whatever it took to reconcile with John. If that meant spending a workday in church, he wouldn’t hesitate.
It was nearly dark when Joseph dropped Jacob off at the cabin, and Rook had already had dinner. Jacob told her to go ahead without him, because he’d be spending dinner with his brothers, and she’d hoped that was a positive sign. As soon as he walked through the door, she ran to him, nearly throwing herself into his arms.
“So is that little smile you’re wearing just for me, or did things go well today?”
Jacob’s smile broadened. “Bit of both, I guess. John’s still not ready to treat me like a brother, but he’s talking to me, and he’s trying to understand.”
Rook greeted this news with a deep kiss, threading the fingers of one hand in his hair, while the other slid seductively down his chest, trailing a finger across the waistband of his pants. He pulled back briefly, smiling at her.
“Let me shower first?”
She nodded, then went around the room turning out the lights. Jacob was still uncomfortable with her seeing him naked, though he’d certainly admired her plenty of times, and she didn’t want to push it. He’d finally let her slip off his shirt in complete darkness the other night, and she’d been thrilled to feel his warm skin against hers at last. In the light spilling over his shoulder, Jacob could see Rook’s eyes widen with desire as she drew in a shaky breath. Any concerns or doubts he had about surprising her like this melted away as she simply stared at him, unable to move. He reached up and flipped off the light, crossing the room to where she kneeled by the bed they shared. He dropped down to one knee beside her, making a gap in the towel that almost, but not quite, left him completely exposed. He rested a hand on her shoulder, stroking the line of her jaw with his thumb.

"It was on Pinterest," Jhope said quietly even though you heard him clearly.

After having to work for 9 hours on Valentine's day was the worst day ever. You wanted to spend time with Jimin but you were called in before the sun even rose. You felt guilty. Because you didn't have time to get him something special for your first Valentine's together. As you unlock your front door you called for Jimin. But you didn't hear any answer. You checked from the kitchen, bathroom and still nothing. But that when you realized you missed one room, your bedroom. As you entered, your bag fell out of your hand slowly and dropped to the ground. Your mouth opened slightly as well. There was roses shaped as a heart saying "Happy 1st Valentine's Day." Balloons everywhere, candles and a Jimin laying down on the bed.
"Hey baby," Jimin said in a somewhat deep voice
You stood there for 5 seconds when you legit ran "Get Out" type towards him
"Ba-Woah, Woah-" Jimin yelled terrified
You jumped on top of him and began to kiss him all over his face
"I.Love.You.So.Much.My.Mochi" you said with every kiss
You then remember you didn't get Jimin a gift. So you pulled away and pouted
"Hey hey what's wrong," Jimin asked gently taking your hand
"I had such a fucked up day, I didn't have time to buy you a gift, I'm so sorry. But-t I'll find a way to make it up to you."Jimin chuckled
"Well, I know one way you can make it up for me," He said with a smirk
He got up and took your hand to direct you to the bathroom. When you both entered, there were dim lights, a bath filled with roses and the scent of lavender floats around the room.
"You can make it up to by enjoying this bath I made for you" He whispered in your ear
With no question asked, you removed your clothes in a swift motion and entered the bathtub.As you sit, you inhale the soft scent and exhale bliss, while Jimin leans on the door frame admiring your relaxed form.
"You know what would be better." You whispered
"What," Jimin asked tilting his head"If the love of my life joins me," you said turning your head to face him.
Once he heard you say "joins" his clothes were removed within second and entered the tub to sit behind you.
He massaged your head as you laid on his chest.
"mm you're making me sleepy," you said as your eyes started to close.
"Then rest my baby, you deserve it," he said as he kissed your sleepy head.

Ever since you guys met, Taehyung would always take pictures. From random photos of any scenic opportunity, he finds to every living thing. But he never took pictures of you like that. You felt down at times about it, but you didn't let it get to you hard. Because it was just pictures, right?It was Valentine’s Day, and you were on your way home with gifts for Taehyung. But you got a text from Taehyung, saying to meet him at an address he sent you. You think much of it and turned on your GPS to proceed the destination.
As you entered the lobby, he sent you another text stating the room number. You went up the elevator and exit to go to the room. As you arrive at the room number, you knocked. No answer, so you knocked again. After being impatient, you twisted the doorknob and found it was unlocked the whole time. You entered with cautious and looked for a weapon that was closest. (Did you really think you were gonna enter an unlocked room that was, in fact, dark. ) You walked around quietly until you saw a light glaring in a room, so you decided to check in there. When you opened the door, you dropped your weapon following by your jaw. Before you were a heart shaped with roses and candles and inside the heart was photos of you and Taehyung.
”You like it ” he heard behind you
As you turn around, you see Taehyung smiling
”I-, I-” you tried to say as tears formed in your eyesHe then came to you and hugged you.
”I love it, thank you so much,” you said as you still look at the display.
”And I love you and all the memories you have given me. You are my heart” he said placing his finger on your chin and moved in to kiss you
Taehyung then felt an object beside his foot”Why is there a whisk on the ground
”Taehyung as he pulled away and looks down between them
”Shhhh, let's not worry about that” you pulled him back to kiss him again but he pulled away
”Was that suppose to a weapon?” he asked while laughing
”Oh my gosh, you ruined the moment!” you said frustrated as you walked lit the room

You weren't really into the whole Valentine’s day thing. You actually thought it was pretty irreverent.Why would people consider showing love or buying gifts for someone as a holiday when you can do it every day.Everyone knew your opinion of Valentines Day, especially Jungkook. As foryour boyfriend, he was so hyped to do something big for your first Valentines together. But after hearing your Valentine’s comments he didn't know what to do anymore.  You guys were casually texting each other. Until you made a  random suggestion that sparked Jungkook an idea.

After 1 hour of getting food for Jungkook’s monsterous stomach. You reached his place. As you were about to knock on the door, Jungkook opened it.
”Hello,” Jungkook says with a smile on his face.
You looked at him strangely as you placed the food on the dining table.
”Hey” as you tried to read his facial expression to see why if he was smiling so hard.
”Sooo, baby. I know you don't like Valentine's Day, which I completely understand. But I still want to do something special for you”
”Jungkook you really didn't have to do tha” You tried to say
”Nope let me finish, Linda,” Jungkook said pointing a finger at you
You looked him up and down to make sure he didn't just lose his mind”
After the idea you gave me, I thought of an idea we can do together on this (not holiday).” Jungkook said as he covered your eyes and directed you to the location
After a few terrible directions, he removed his hands and as you opened your eyes, words could not  form. Somehow Jungkook made a legit an ocean movie theater. There was a giant inflatable kiddie pool floats in the pool. Inside the kiddie pool was lots of blankets, pillows, and plushies. There are roses and battery operated candles around the pool. Last but not least a projector with the Netflix logo.
“Omg, my, how,” You tried to say but was too captivated by the creation Jungkook made
“You should have known even on our FIRST Valentine’s Day, I wanted to do something special for you. It’s not too Valentineeee, it’s basic Netflix and chill but outside at night...with roses. “ Jungkook says rumbling as he scratches the back of his head.
You hugged him“I love it, baby,” You said with a smile
“well let’s get in” Jungkook he said
You and Jungkook got the food and brought inside the kiddie pool. but you guys decided to change into onesies to set the mood. Once you guys changed, you both struggled to get in the floating kiddie pool. After an hour of watching Netflix, you couldn’t imagine how someone would do something like this for you
“Hey, I really appreciate this. No has ever done this type of stuff for me” You started to say
“BabyGirl, I love you. I will do anything to make you keep that smile on your face.” Jungkook said as he looked into your eyes
You gave him a passionate kiss, but it soon started to heat up
“If you keep this up, you may tip us over,” You said placing a hand on his chest
“ Yah, stop disturbing the movie”
you heard a voice behind you. As you and Jungkook turned around you see the rest of the members in a kiddie pool also watching the movie
“When did you guys even get in here AND HOW WERE YOU GUYS QUIET THIS ENTIRE TIME!” Jungkook asked while you were laughing your ass off.

Flopping down on the finally cleared off couch, you let out a hefty sigh. When your brother first suggested moving to this town, you were skeptical. A college town that was surrounded by woods. You were sure that he would get discovered, accidentally changing around a party of students or some other avoidable event. But he insisted on this place and since you swore to stay by his side… well, you didn’t really have a choice.
Unpacking was certainly the worst part of moving. The fact that you were the kind of person that once you started you couldn’t really stop just made it worse. However, you were finally done after doing nothing else since breakfast thanks to zero help from your big bro.
Speaking of the devil, Lon came waltzing in the front door, whistling to himself.
“Well, now this place looks like home!” he cheered.
You glared at him. “Yeah, no thanks to you.”
He blew you off, heading into the kitchen and going straight for the freshly stocked fridge. Opening the door and letting the cold air out, he just stood there, studying the shelves like he was practicing for the Bar Exam.
Pushing yourself up off the couch, you came up behind him, already in tune with whatever he was thinking. “I’m not cooking you dinner, too.”
He whined, “But your food is so good. And you know how I am in the kitchen.”
“Yeah… useless.” Sometimes, you really had to make yourself remember that he was nearly two years older than you.
Growing up, you were always looking after him. Especially since he used to be so tiny. The other boys in the pack would pick on him, bully him to no end. Well, when you all were still a part of a pack.
No. Nope. You didn’t go down that road. You no longer dealt with wolf business and that was how you liked it.
“I guess I’ll just have a sandwich then,” Lon grumbled.
You rolled your eyes. “Don’t you mean six sandwiches?”
“I take offense to that,” he scoffed.
You crossed your arms as he turned to face you, letting the fridge door close with a thud. “It was meant to be offensive, idiot.”
Lon pounced, putting you in a loose chokehold before you could get away. Stupid jerk. You fought against his hold, grunting as you tried to gain some sort of leverage. You didn’t get any.
“Say you’re sorry and I’ll let go,” Lon mocked.
What were you, five?
“Not a chance,” you grunted stubbornly. Eventually, he’d let go. Right?
“I’m stronger, sis,” he laughed. “Always have been, always will.”
Irritated, you took the low road and elbowed him in the stomach. He groaned, his hold loosening enough for you to escape.
“Cheater,” he huffed.
Grabbing your leather jacket off the back of the couch, you saluted him. “We each have our ways. I’ll be back in a bit.”
“Where are you going?” Lon jutted out his bottom lip. Ugh. You hated it when he pouted. Someday he’d learn that he wasn’t a cute puppy anymore.
“Out,” you answered simply before closing the door behind you. He was the one who chose this place, it was only justifiable that you got to explore it on your own as well.
It was well into the new semester. The air was starting to warm up as spring approached. College students were bucking down for their midterms, but that didn’t stop most of them from going out on a Friday night.
A small art festival was taking place in the downtown area so you decided to check that out. It was held in a large open area where dozens of white tents were set up in rows for the artists to display their works. Some had potter up for sale, other’s jewelry while most stuck to classic paintings and sketches.
Plenty of people were milling about, weaving in and out of the tents with treats in their hands from the food trucks parked nearby. You could easily hang around without attracting too much attention, blending in and not being noticed. Not that you actually looked like an artsy person with your worn leather jacket and ratted black jeans with massive holes in the knees. You made a note to yourself to remind your brother that your converse would need replacing soon.
A particular tent decorated in black and white and sepia photos of old ruins and worn objects caught your eye. You moseyed on over to it, squeezing around a small group of girls that were huddled around the entrance. Taking your time, you flipped through the photos that were housed in black cardboard frames to keep them from bending.
You were absolutely fascinated. More colorful pictures were hidden behind the grainy ones that originally caught your eyes. Beautiful blues and greens that made up the northern lights. Golden sand that contrasted against the almost-white blue sky. Waterfalls and hot springs. But your absolute favorites were pictures the photographer had somehow gotten inside the Chernobyl disaster area.
There were crumbled up books, decaying buildings, and even an old typewriter. The ones that really drew you in, though, were the many pianos that were falling apart. Dust and cobwebs covered the chipping wood. Many had missing keys and their rusting stings inside were exposed for the world to see. The last one you came to had fallen onto its back, the pieces still left barely holding together.
You felt a lot like those pianos. A shell of your former self. Where there used to be a once happy and carefree little girl who wore dresses and got along with other kids, now there was only a bitter woman who preferred to left alone. You were crumbling away inside with no desire to tape the pieces back together.
“See anything you like?”
Glancing up, you rolled your eyes as you pushed the stack of photos with your index finger back to their original position, leaning away from you for the next person to sort through.
A fairly tall boy with blonde hair and tanned skin was holding himself up against the table of boxes that housed the artist’s work in a manner that he probably thought was suave and cool.
“Not interested,” you deadpanned. Stuffing your hands in your pockets, you walked around him and away from the breathtaking pictures. It’s not like you had extra money to buy them anyway.
“Now that’s not very nice.” The guy had long legs and so he caught up to you in less than two strides.
“Do I look like I do nice?” you snapped. Don’t look at him. Don’t look at him.
In your peripheral, you saw him rake his eyes up and down. “I’d say you look nice. A few rough edges, maybe, but I think I could smooth them out.”
You lost it. Whirling on him, you put up your wall and riled up your tough girl act.
“Listen,” you growled. “I. Am not. Interested. So go chase a short skirt that might actually care about your pathetic attempts at flirting.”
With a set jaw, he opened his mouth to-
“Tao!”
He clamped his mouth shut tight and his eyes flashed yellow, just for a second.
Shit. You pissed off a wolf. Your brother hadn’t mentioned that there were other wolves here. He probably didn’t even know. The idiot.
Two other tall wolves stood about ten feet away. The one in front of you - Tao - whined before throwing you a glare and running off to join his pack members. The tallest one with a very authoritative aura to him grabbed Tao by his neck and started dragging him away. Tao let out a few cries of pain, but that didn’t deter his brother.
Just before you could go about your business, the second wolf caught your eye. He had a soft face outlined by light brown hair and ears that stuck out a bit. Dark, contrasting brown eyes stared at you in fascination. His eyebrows were pulled together in confusion. An uncomfortable feeling settling in your stomach, you backed up a few steps before turning around and inserting yourself into the crowd that was moving in the opposite direction of the wolf.
You decided it was time for you to head back home and you left the art festival and walked along the empty sidewalks of the business district.
To no one’s surprise, your brother was sprawled out on the couch, munching away at sandwich number who knows what. As soon as the door was shut behind you, you marched up to the couch and slapped your brother upside the head.
“Ow!” he whined through a mouth full of food. “What was that?”
“Did you even do any sort of freaking research before choosing this place?” you yelled.
Tossing the sandwich down on the coffee table, your brother sat up. “Of course I did! Do you remember what happened last time?”
Of course you did. The idiot didn’t realize that a particularly nasty pack had already settled in the area a few months back. Your brother had needed several days to heal up after that encounter while you searched desperately to find anywhere else to live that wasn’t there. The worst part was that you actually liked the area.
“Why the hell do you think I’m asking?” As much as you loved your brother, he could be a real idiot sometimes. “Did you happen to miss the wolves that already live here?”
Lon shook his head. “No, I know they’re here.”
You blinked. Several times. “Excuse me?”
“I met one of them when I was scouting the place out,” he elaborated. “I was bouncing around the different auto shops, seeing anyone had any openings. I came across a new shop that was looking for hire. The owner spotted what I was right away. He doesn’t care. It’s his pack that claims this territory, but as long as we don’t cross them, we’re fine.”
Okay with your brother’s presence or not, you were not satisfied or comforted by his explanation Or the fact that he left that important detail out. “And you didn’t think that maybe I should know about this?”
“Nope.” God, he even did the lip pop on the “p” that you hated so much. “I knew you want to find a different place and I like it here. I start at the shop tomorrow and we already signed a six month lease on the place. So chill out.”
He was absolutely correct. You would have fought tooth and nail to go somewhere else. You didn’t trust wolves. After the shit the pack pulled against your family… well, let’s just say that if your brother didn’t turn into a big hairy dog every once in a while, then you would have made sure to extinct that part of your life forever. Even so, you did a pretty good job of avoiding the supernatural.
“Fine,” you grumbled. Walking around him, you snatched up his sandwich before heading down the hall to your room.”
“Hey!” Lon called after you.
Officially claiming the sandwich as your own, you took a large bite out of the corner. “You’ve had enough!”

Honestly, you should probably get a job. It might cure this boredom you had. But your brother insisted on being the only breadwinner in the family and didn’t really agree with you finding full time work as well.
You could always take classes. The college might actually take you. You had decent grades in high school. Not honor society worthy, but still not bad. You’d taken some college courses in the past after you first graduated, but the idea of staying in a lecture hall for over an hour while some old guy yapped away like what he was saying was actually important wasn’t how you prefered to spend your time.
With no other appealing tasks, you once again set out in randomly walking around the city. Out of the seven days you’d been settled in this place, this was about the fourth time you’d spent it this way. Each time, you hit a different area, memorizing the street names and buildings located there but always avoided the college. According to your brother, most of the pack was enrolled at the university and you didn’t feel like having another run-in with any of them. Lon hadn’t really met of them either, but he wasn’t too worried. His boss apparently was of the higher ups of the pack and treated him well.
Thinking about your brother made you realize that you hadn’t gone to visit him at work yet. While you knew where the shop was located approximately and what it was called, you hadn’t physically been there yet. You decided that could cure an hour or so and you brought up the shop on your phone, following the map until you were outside the entrance.
There was a car in each of the three slots of the garage with a few mechanics milling about. You shifted back and forth on your feet while your eyes searched for your brother. You had the right shop, didn’t you?
“Can I help you?”
The really tall wolf from the night at the festival walked up to you, wiping his hands with an already dirty rag.
“Um,” you scratched the side of your neck. “I’m looking for Lon?”
A look of epiphany lit up the wolf’s eyes. “Ah. you must be the little sister.” He held out his hand. “I’m Kris.”
Hesitantly, you took his hand, shaking it politely. “(y/n).”
“It’s nice to meet you,” Kris smiled. He motioned with his head, “Follow me. Lon’s under a car right now.”
Oh. That explained why you didn’t seem him. You followed Kris to the car all the way to the end of the garage. Lon was lying on a shop roller on the floor underneath a blue convertible. Kris hit his palm against the door twice.
“Hey, Lon, you’ve got a visitor.”
Your brother pushed himself out from under the car. “(y/n)? What are you doing here?”
You shrugged. “I was bored.”
Lon grunted as he got to his feet. “Sorry, Kris.”
Kris waved it away. “Don’t worry about it. Family’s important. Besides, the owner won’t be picking up until tomorrow. No rush.” He looked at you and nodded. “It was nice to meet you.”
You gave him a slightly forced smiled. You couldn’t help it. Too many years spent being weary of other wolves. “You, too.”
Now just the two of you, Lon sighed, shaking his head at you. “Did you at least bring me lunch?”
“No,” you scoffed. “I was just walking around, figured I’d kill some time here, see what you do with your day.” You leaned against the car, stuffing your hands in your pockets.
Like the annoying brother he was, Lon pulled the beanie from your head and then tugged on your jacket. “Don’t scratch the car. I’ll have to pay for that.”
Rolling your eyes, you swiped your hat back and stuffed it in your pocket before straightening up. “Yeah, right. You could fix a small scratch in your sleep without spending a dime.”
Lon had always loved tinkering with cars ever since he was kid. He’d go on and on about cylinders and nitro gas and racer movies. A permanent smell of grease followed him everywhere. Your dad always encouraged it, buying him old clunkers that Lon would spend hours pulling apart and putting back together again. You’d usually hang out with him in the garage doing your homework or just sitting on the floor, watching him. The garage was where he was happiest and seeing your brother happy made you content.
That was always the height of your emotions: contentment. You weren’t exactly sure what “happy” was anymore. That was a feeling you hadn’t had for a very long time. Neutral was where you stayed most of the time, teetering on angry. Angry at the old pack, angry at your dad, angry at the world. Usually, you were able to stamp it down. Anger was useless when you had nowhere to direct it.
“Still,” Lon scolded, flicking your forehead, “don’t lean on the car.”
Looking around the shop, you watched as the mechanics as joked around and teased each other. Their laughs echoed off the walls and made the atmosphere an enjoyable one.
“Do you like it here?” you asked.
With a big smile, he nodded. “Yeah. I like it a lot. Kris is a good man to work for. And I don’t have to hide what I am.”
You frowned. “Are the others-”
“Nah,” he didn’t even let you finish. “Just Kris knows. But that means I don’t have to hide it from him if… something were to happen.”
You didn’t exactly want to think about what could happen if your brother was to accidentally lose his temper.
“That’s good.”
“Kris!”
Your head snapped around to the voice that had called for the shop owner.
Ugh.
It was the brown haired wolf from the festival. Tao wasn’t with him, thankfully. This time, a different sandy haired boy was with him along with a literal incarnation of a puppy. So much for no more running into them. Weren’t they supposed to be in school?
Kris looked up from the engine he was currently looking at. “Hey, guys! What’s up?”
You turned back to your brother. “I’m going to go ahead go. I’ll see you at home.”
“Okay!” Lon threw an arm over your shoulder, pulling in so he could plant a kiss on the top of your head. You shoved him away, trying to feign annoyance, but it didn’t work. You loved affection from your brother.
Now the trick was to sneak out of the garage without being noticed. You were almost in the clear, taking quick but quiet steps. The sidewalk outside was almost in your reach….
“Hey, wait!”
You didn’t wait. Your pace quickened, hoping that your obvious determination to not stop would deter his chase. Unfortunately, not.
“Hey!” The wolf grabbed your arm and brought you to a stop before spinning you around to face him.
“What?” you growled.
“I’m Chanyeol,” he blurted.
You raised an eyebrow. “So?”
As hard as it was, you tried not to focus on his face. Cute boys weren’t your type at all. Especially cute boys that didn’t understand that you obviously didn’t want to be bothered. One would think that after his friend being shot down last week, the hint would be painted on a billboard sign that you weren’t interested.
But then you really met his eyes.
Your heart was doing something funny. It was speeding up and not in the usual flight or fight way that you were used to. A smile grew on Chanyeol’s face. It was a little lopsided as it crinkled the sides of his eyes. It just made your heart jump even more.
No. Hell no.
“What’s your name?” he asked softly.
“Not a chance.”
You wretched your arm out of his grasp and took off. As fast as your feet could carry you, you raced back to your apartment, not stopping until you were safe within its walls. Collapsing against the door, you slid down to the floor, releasing a sound that was a mix of a groan and a whine the whole way.
This was so not happening to you. It wasn’t going to happen to you. Not on your watch.
Taking off your jacket, you rolled it up into a ball until your noticed your pockets were empty. Searching all around you and even risking being found to look outside your apartment, you desperately wanted to find your purple beanie. It was your favorite and it was nowhere to be found.
Great. Just freaking great.
One week here and you hated this place already. Hopefully, you dropped it back at the shop and your brother was able to pick it up. If not - you didn’t want to think about the possible alternative. From now on, you were going to have to become a recluse. And you had make sure that your brother never found out.
