“Hey, Luca,” he said, a smile gracing his lips. “Did you get my texts?”

There was no reply from the other boy.

“Luc?”

A little sob crackled through the line, followed by a sharp intake of breath. Jens’ eyebrows furrowed and he pressed the phone closer to his ear, concerned.

“Lucas? What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice lined with panic.

“I don’t-” the voice faltered as Lucas let out another upsetting cry. “I can’t- I can’t breathe.”

Jens’ feet acted before his mind fully comprehended the sentence, hastily guiding him down the sidewalk on autopilot. “You’re okay, I’m right here. Are you still at your apartment?”

Lucas made a choked sound of confirmation, followed by more heartbreaking sobs. “Need- I need you. Please.”

I know you said in the past (or at least I think you did) that you aren't really motivated for vds anymore but still wanted to finish ywmc, I was just wondering if that's still the plan? I don't want to pressure you in any way with this ask, but yeah, just interested in how you feel about ywmc right now :)

i’m still not very motivated and i’m very low on inspiration for actual words to finish ywmc the way i always wanted to, but i do still want to. it’s more difficult when i haven’t got anyone to talk to about it (which is why writing is a lot more difficult in general for me now; i still get my own enjoyment out of it, but it’s hard to hold onto enthusiasm when i don’t actually know anyone who cares or is interested or wants to hear about it). but this ask inspired me to finally write the last hundred or so words i needed to post the next chapter — thank you for being here this long ❤️

Both Envision drivers - Sebastien Buemi and team returnee Robin Frijns - will be required to race at the WEC event for Toyota and BMW respectively, meaning that as it stands they will be out of the first Berlin FE race, on the Saturday

Formula E is likely to issue a further iteration of its calendar to confirm the venue for the only current to-be-decided race on the schedule in Italy over the weekend of April 13/14. This is expected to be either Misano or Imola, although a recent simulation study of the Vallelunga circuit near Rome was also carried out.

Additionally, Jakarta being added as a season finale in August is believed to be still possible, meaning that a 17-race billing might be achievable.

But Buemi told The Race that he “still has not lost hope [the WEC clash will disappear] because I know things will change again when they publish [a calendar update] in November".

“I was quite happy to see that we don’t have the clash with the prologue [WEC test in Qatar, which was initially set to be on the same weekend as an end-of-February FE date] and Le Mans tests [now free of the scratched Jakarta race]."

Buemi suggested reducing Berlin to a single race and making Portland a double-header would be a logical change to ensure no direct clash between Berlin and the WEC's Spa race.

Another driver who is likely to be in the frame for a drive at Envision is Tom Dillmann, simulator driver for its powertrain supplier Jaguar.

Ex-Dragon-Penske driver Joel Eriksson has also served as a test and reserve driver for Jaguar. The firm is expected to announce its full wider 2024 FE driver line-up before the end of this year, which will make Envision's potential fallback plans clearer.

Other drivers that could be affected may include Abt Cupra’s Nico Mueller, who may be held to racing for the Peugeot WEC team at Spa.

Abt is expected to call upon the services of Kelvin van der Linde, who subbed for an injured Robin Frijns in three events last season, to deputise.

FE is expected to take precedence for Norman Nato, Jean-Eric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne, while the situation regarding Mahindra's FE returnee Nyck de Vries remains unclear as he is expected to also be racing for the Toyota WEC team in 2024 but has yet to be officially announced.

“Hey,” Robbe said, and the other boys at the table quieted down, their curiosity now also prioritizing the lone Jens sliding into the picnic table. “Where’s Lucas?”

“Sleeping,” Jens answered shortly, settling down on the bench and lifting his head to look at his friends.

“Holy shit!” “Woah!” Moyo and Aaron shouted concurrently, making multiple overtired teenagers turn to glare. Robbe ignored them, grabbing Jens’ face with one hand and turning it toward him to get a better look. “What the hell happened?”

A mix of purple and black encircled Jens’ left eye, traveling up and disappearing under a band-aid adhered to his temple. The skin directly below his eye was swollen and glossy from what Robbe guessed was some type of ointment. Another small bandage was plastered over the bridge of his nose, a dot of red bleeding through and standing out on the tan material.

“Nothing,” Jens declared, jerking out of Robbe’s hold. “Just drop it.”

Or, When Jens and Lucas gain mysterious injuries neither of them will openly talk about, Robbe is reminded of his and Sander’s attack and is concerned for his friends.

Robbe knew his best friend. He could see when he was sad, sense when he was angry, feel when he was happy. It was a skill he prided himself on. So when Lucas came along, Robbe could tell that Jens was in love.

He saw the looks Jens gave the new boy from across the courtyard, full of awe and yearning, but every time Jens turned back to their lunch table, Robbe pretended he didn’t notice.

Robbe also knew how scary it was to recognize that what you felt was love. So he didn’t tease, or laugh, or judge.

Jens hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Lucas.

This was not exactly anything new, but the shift in the manner of his thoughts was what brought him concern. Wanting to take care of Lucas was nothing new. Even wanting to do so in the privacy of Jens’s room, to lock him away somewhere he’d be comfortable and protected, was not an unfamiliar feeling.

Wanting to hold on to Lucas, to keep him safe in the crook of his arms and the hollows of his heart, was a frighteningly new sensation.

Jens, as the prince, was used to being somewhat lonely. The royal family had subjects, comrades, allies. They didn’t have many friends. Jens had gotten lucky that Senne and he genuinely got along well. It was convenient that Moyo and Aaron were his and Robbe’s age and the children of nobles his mother trusted. Robbe himself was a borderline miracle, and he’d eventually brought Jens Sander, too. Jens was lucky, and he would never claim otherwise. He knew the gift he’d been handed in each of these relationships and he would fight tooth and nail to keep them all.

He clung onto all the people in his life with a tight grasp, but none of them compared to how desperately he desired to keep Lucas.
