Pairing: Baekhyun x Reader
Summary: You didn’t care for boys that could be labeled as the “class clown”. Their type of jokes made you roll your eyes. Though you enjoyed a fun time yourself, you preferred the more subdued type, a Darcy over a Bingley. So why couldn’t you get the most obnoxious boy you’d ever met out of your head?

Sehun kicked at the gravel, sending a few tiny rocks skipping through the air. Luckily for all, none went towards his car. Baekhyun was taken aback by the reaction. He would have expected Sehun to give him what he would have done – relentless teasing. That was the uninterrupted pattern by now, established by yours truly. The youngest wolf usually followed along. He was always eager to mischievously poke the older wolves.
“Is there going to be a new one every week?” Sehun whined. He looked like he did back when he was seventeen when he was told he couldn’t go out with the college-aged members because it was a school night.
“We knew this was coming,” Minseok said. “We always have.”
“Why does it have to?”
“It’s our nature,” Kyungsoo reminded.
“Or our curse,” Sehun mumbled before finally getting into his car, the door slamming with alarming force.
An awkward silence fell on the group. This wasn’t how Baekhyun expected this to go whenever he met his mate. He never would have thought that Sehun would be so upset, an idea that he couldn’t wrap his head around. Baekhyun had prepared himself for the reckoning of his fellow wolves and yet no one was dog piling on him.
Sehun started the engine with deliberate intensity. It was a warning to those who wanted to hitch a ride. But it was an empty one. He wouldn’t actually take off, not with Ji Yeon still in the backseat. That was probably Minseok’s plan all along. His mate was rising as a force to be reckoned with. Sehun wouldn’t dare.
“Go for a walk,” Minseok suggested. With that short pep talk, he hopped into the car, mercifully taking the front passenger seat. Kyungsoo waved them off. The rest would walk home. Sehun revved the engine before peeling down the street.
“The great advice of the first mated wolf is to go for a walk?” Baekhyun looked to the others, hoping that they would have a better alternative for what he should do now.
Kyungsoo motioned down the sidewalk. “Let’s go.”
Or not, apparently.
“What is a walk going to do?”
“Keep you from bursting into Ming’s apartment,” Kyungsoo deadpanned.
Baekhyun held up a finger. “Good point.” This urge to be near you was unparalleled. His favorite foods didn’t even have this strong of a hold on him. It grew as he took a step away from the front door. His feet became heavy, like cement was being poured over them.
Why couldn’t he just go and tell you everything? What was wrong with being honest and upfront? Wasn’t Junmyeon always going on about how those two things were the most important aspects of maintaining a relationship? And watching the other two struggle made the “keep it a secret” route seem very unappealing. So, he decided, he shouldn’t have to wait to be with his mate.
Mind made up, he turned around with a determination to get to you.
A hand clamped down on his shoulder, taking a handful of his shirt and yanking him back. Baekhyun growled and swiped at the one who dared to hold him back.
Chanyeol laughed at the struggle as he held his friend at arm’s length.
“Let me go!” Baekhyun meant to sound intimidating. Even he had to admit that it came out more like a whine.
“Not if you’re going to barge in there.”
Baekhyun pouted, still trying to pry Chanyeol’s fingers off his collar. “Why not?”
“Do you really think springing everything on her all at once is a good idea after she’s known you for two seconds?”
“Yes.”
Kyungsoo sent him one of his signature glares. “You really are an idiot.”
Baekhyun gaped at him. “That was mean.”
“It’s true if you think that telling a woman you just meant all about werewolves and mates and getting thrown into jail for breaking and entering.”
“But–”
“She wasn’t exactly warm to you,” Chanyeol pointed out.
Baekhyun stopped fighting. “What do you mean?”
Slipping his hands into his pockets, Kyungsoo shrugged. “She was more interested in Chanyeol than your bad attempts at flirting.”
An instinctual growl rippled through Baekhyun’s clenched teeth at the thought of Chanyeol with his mate. It was the same snapped reaction that he’d experienced back in the restaurant. Rationale told him that Chanyeol would never do something like that, but the wolf took every possible threat into consideration. Thankfully, Chanyeol shrugged it off.
“You can always try again,” he said.
“Of course I’m going to try again.” Baekhyun crossed his arms with his usual confidence. “And I’ll get my mate, no problem.”
Kyungsoo snorted. “Good luck.” Chanyeol’s forced back smile said that he was in agreement.
It was insulting, the lack of faith they had in him. Baekhyun was suave, charming.
Shoulders back and chin held high, he started down the sidewalk towards the outerlimits with a newfound determination. He could win his mate over in no time. What was there possibly not to like about him?

It had been fifteen minutes and you were still stuck on the same section of your faux lesson plan. The lackluster weekend poked at your side, refusing to be ignored no matter how much you wanted to let it go.
Admittedly, it was your own fault. You had hyped it up in your mind to be this worthwhile night that would lead to a one-on-one date on Saturday. Reality merely gave you an okay dinner meeting some very nice people that you wouldn’t mind hanging out with again in a platonic way, but that was it. While Chanyeol had piqued your interest in the beginning, it quickly smothered itself. Something inside simply said no. And you liked to trust your gut, especially in this arena.
“Hi.”
You looked up from the computer screen that had began to blur in your vision. It took a few seconds for your eyes to adjust. There weren’t many people in this corner of the student union. Which was exactly why you’d parked yourself here. You needed the quiet to concentrate when you were studying by yourself. When you were with Ran, you could tolerate noise. You were prepared for it. But not now during your free period. The random greeting had made you jump.
What was he doing here?
“Hi,” you said back, confused.
Baekhyun beamed down at you, one hand gripping the single backpack strap hanging from his shoulder. His aura was relaxed, nonchalant despite how out of place this interaction was.
“Can I sit?” He pointed towards the empty chair across from you at the small square table. There were plenty of other places to sit around here but you couldn’t find a decent reason to say no.
“Um, I mean, I guess–”
The chair scraped against the tile floor as he took that answer with enthusiasm. Flopping down, his bag fell to the floor with a heavier thump that you had expected. He didn’t seem like the type of student to be bogged down with classes or to take on a schedule that required a lot of textbooks.
Neither of you spoke, making you wonder why he walked up in the first place. Shrugging it off, you went back to work, trying to solve the puzzle of whether you would follow writing the alphabet with a reading circle or with counting tables. It was even harder to make a decision now that you felt his eyes on you. He didn’t move to take any books or paper or even a laptop from his bag. So studying was obviously not his main objective here.
His presence was… distracting. And not even in the normal way when someone was around when you wanted to be alone. It wasn’t the need to remember that you were sharing a table or general leg space – which he had apparently forgotten with his legs currently resting on your side. No, it was just… him. In general. It was frustrating and annoying.
“What are you working on?”
You glanced at him over the top of your computer. And your heart jumped a beat when your eyes met. What the hell was that about?
Baekhyun was leaning forward on his elbows, wearing the same full-of-himself smirk from last week.
“A lesson plan,” you answered, going back to work.
“You teach a class here?”
You shook your head. “No. I’m an education major. It’s an assignment.”
“Oh. So you want to be a teacher?”
“Yup.” You didn’t even bother to look up this time as you replied.
“That’s cool.” Shockingly, he actually sounded interested. But he didn’t ask another question. He tapped his fingers against the table incessantly. Unable to focus on the words you needed to type out, you snapped out your hand to hold his down and stop the noise.
The warm electricity you had experienced briefly at dinner was back with a vengeance, lasting longer and strengthening its grip. You snatched your hand back to cut it off.
The attempt to clear your throat nearly failed. “That was distracting.” Acting as if your hand wasn’t still tingling, you went on with your homework.
“(Y/n)?”
You decided that a reading circle should follow the handwriting in order to give the five-year-old hands a break. Your own joints ached after an hour of writing, imagine having those tiny little fingers with minimal strength. “Yeah?”
“I think we should go out tomorrow night.”
Your jaw dropped. “Why?”
He blinked. “What?”
You sighed as you closed your laptop and packed up your supplies. Standing, you slung your bag over your shoulder, each movement slow as you tried to come up with something to say.
“Where are you going?” Baekhyun’s cocky expression melted into one of bewilderment.
“I have to get to class.”
“Oh, okay,” he nodded. “But you didn’t answer my question.”
“I–” You bit back a groan, not wanting to hurt his feelings but needing to give him an answer. Baekhyun just… he wasn’t your type. “I can’t. I have plans.”
His shoulders – the last remnant of cheer in his body language – fell. “Oh. Okay.”
And now you were the bad guy. “See you around.”
You rushed out of the student union and towards your next class. Being about twenty minutes too early, you were forced to camp outside in the hallway. You leaned back against the wall and slid down to the floor, groaning as you knocked your head back.
“Ow.” You probably deserved that.
Baekhyun haunted your thoughts for the rest of the day. You were at a complete loss as to why he asked you out in the first place. He barely stuck around for dinner and you didn’t exactly respond well to his weird attempts at flirting. He was the classic class clown. The very type of guy that had agitated you since high school. From your point of view, there was no connection between the two of you. What was he seeing that you weren’t?
The thought of getting Ran’s advice did cross your mind. She would probably give out a short laugh before scolding you for coming up with a lie.
Well, technically, it didn’t have to be a lie. You could come with plans that would occupy your evening. Besides, Baekhyun had asked you out and you said no. Somewhat. Surely that had to be the end of it.
So when you sat cross-legged on Ran’s living room floor, you decided that it wasn’t something worth discussing.
“How was your day?” Ran asked as she spread out her assignment and flipped through her textbook.
“Fine,” you lied. Baekhyun’s disappointed face flashed in your mind. “Hey, we should do something tomorrow.”
Ran raised an eyebrow but didn’t pause in her flipping through the pages. “Like what?”
“Oh, I don’t know.” You clicked your tongue as you searched through your memory for anything that could be happening downtown. “Wasn’t there an art fair or art pop up thing going on?”
“Oh, yeah!” Ran put the book down, now very interested in the newly forming plans. “I think there were a couple of local artists participating that I wanted to check out. What time do you want to meet up?”
You beamed, happy that your last minute plan was working. “My last class is at four, so probably six-thirty-ish?”
Ran agreed to the plans and turned the conversation to how her day ended up being one clumsy accident after another. She was in the middle of telling you about how she nearly knocked over several vials of chemicals while reaching across the station, a very big no-no, when Ming came home.
“Hello!” she greeted cheerfully with a wave. Just as every time she came home after spending time with Yixing, she was beaming.
The jealousy goblin crawled up your shoulder, but you successfully flicked it away. “Hey!”
The medical student dropped her bag off in her room before coming back out to get a drink from the kitchen. As she reentered the living room, a reddish mark on her neck, only visible due to her large collar slipping down her shoulder, caught your eye.
“Hey, Ming, are you okay?”
She looked at you strangely. “Yeah, why?”
You motioned to the spot on your own neck. “You’ve got a mark there. It looks really irritated.”
At first, she didn’t seem to realize what you were referring to, but then she gasped, covering the mark with her hand. “Oh! I-It’s nothing. I just had a… bra strap too tight and I think it burned the skin. Nothing to worry about. I’m putting cream on it.” She hastily pulled up on her sweater as she ran back to her room.
When her door was closed, you leaned closer to Ran and whispered, “That wasn’t in the right place for a bra strap to dig into your shoulder.”
“I know,” Ran agreed.
“You don’t think–”
Ran cut you off before you could finish. “No, absolutely not. He would never. It was probably just an accident that she’s too embarrassed to talk about.”
You didn’t think that was it for a second, but Ran effectively ended the conversation by going back to her book. The harsh red mark was jagged, the edge that you could see rounded in the opposite direction than Ming’s explanation. Something was up with her, but you didn’t feel like you had the right to push. You would keep an eye on her though.
An idea popped into your head. You jumped up and went to her door, knocking gently. “Hey, Ming! Do you have plans tomorrow?”

A bit of random data before we jump into the rankings for listed fandoms …
Since the numbers post yesterday we've had signups for nearly 60 new auctions, bringing the current total to 779. That beats the number of signups for 2016/7, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, and puts us withing spitting distance of our record last year of 819. Can we do it? Will we do it? Signal boost FTH posts and encourage others to participate. More money raised for good causes, more fanworks in the world — it's a win/win!

author’s note: please note that this has another to do with the actual plot of TVD. this one’s been along time coming. ik people have a lot of mixed feelings about Damon so do with this what you will

You started going to therapy again, per Ric's request. He hadn't forced you to go of course, he didn't feel that it was his place to tell you what do. Even though he did feel responsible for looking after you and Jeremy, it seemed as though the two of you looked after him just as much, and really it felt weird to enforce anything under the guise of being your parent.
While he did technically assume guardianship and enforced the unavoidable things like school and general safety, he had a tendency to make other things appear as mere suggestions. Such as one am curfews and therapy.
"It's just—I don't know. Just be a normal teenager. Teenagers go to therapy all the time. That's like the thing now," he'd said one morning while rinsing off dishes in the kitchen sink. And while he had been nonchalant about the suggestion, you knew he was really hoping you would take him up on the offer. Maybe Ric was right, it was time to do normal non-vampire teenager things.

"You said you're still sleeping at his house?"
His voice sounds contemplative, even a little concerned. "You know that while it's okay to want some alone time to process, it's better to surround yourself with people that you care about and who care about you. Maybe Ric or even one of your friends could stay with you?"
Ric had pulled a few strings at the university and gotten in touch with a friend of Isabel's who was familiar with the whole supernatural vampire situation. So while he hadn't particularly been taken by surprise by anything you had told him, there are still somethings that you don't know how to explain.
A light, airy laugh leaves your mouth as you wipe the wetness away from your eyes, stalling in hopes that there's a better way to explain that you're not there alone. "Well... there's Damon."
Damon, who without question, took away the worst suffering imaginable from your little brother. Damon, who time and time again, made sure your family was safe. Damon, who fought his way into your life and never left.
He actually pauses and looks up from his notes. This is the first time that you have seen him look surprised after nearly two weeks of sessions.
"You're staying with Damon?"

You feel him even before you see him at the funeral. His presence has always been like that, not quite smothering but certainly there. Alway there. His shoulder brushes yours to formally announce his arrival.
"Hey," he offers lowly, his smooth voice as level and unwavering as ever.
"Hey," you breathe back as you turn, looking up to meet his sharp eyes. They're intensified by a subtle redness around his irises. It is strange to think you had found them unnerving at first. Admittedly, their unnatural blueness was shocking to everyone. They were the eyes of a natural born predator, startling as much as they were cunning.
The crisp black suit hugs his broad shoulders in a presidentially confident manner. It's a noticeable difference as compared to how you are so used to seeing him, untamed and bestial. You're reminded of a wolf in captivity, controlled but only because he has momentarily allowed it.
Damon sighs heavily, like it's the first real breath he's taken in a while. "As someone who did not die when they should have over two hundred years ago, I can't say this ever gets any easier."
"It's not supposed to be easy. You're brothers, Damon."
He snorts, his shiny blue eyes fixed ahead on the casket. "So were Cain and Abel. Need I remind you of how that ended?" His voice comes out dry and ends with his signature humorous lilt that borderlines on insensitive; defiantly not how you would expect one who just lost their brother to sound.
Used to Damon's sarcasm by now, you recognize the bitterness in it. You know that no matter how many fights they had, no matter how much they disagreed, they would always forgive each other in the end. You wouldn't go as far as to say that they loved each other, they had both caused each other too much pain for that, but they were so devoted to keeping the other alive that sometimes the lines blurred. They were loyal like dogs, the Salvatores.
As if to address the silence that has washed over the two of you, he finally says, "We'll get over this."
"I know," you say, staring ahead at the casket.
When you don't look at him, he says it again. "I mean it, (Y/n). We're going to be okay."
Your throat is tight and all you can do is stare ahead as you fight the losing battle of not crying. "I know," you say again, but this time your voice cracks.
Damon sighs. "C'mere," he says, extending his hand out to you and pulling you in under his arm. Suddenly needing his embrace, you give in and turn to wrap your arms around him, your hands sliding under his suit jacket to feel the leanness of his body hidden beneath. You burrow into his chest, trying and failing to muffle your own sobs. With a sigh, Damon rests his chin on the top of your head. He allows you to stand there and just cry for a while, humming so that you can feel the vibrations of his throat.
When your tears stop and you go quiet in his arms, Damon pulls away from you just slightly to push the hair away from your face. Leaning down, he runs his perfectly sculpted nose along your throat, under your jaw, and up your cheek. You can tell by the way he breathes that the kind of respect that you're asking him for is causing him real, physical pain. You are pressed so close that you get the sense he is trying to make this enough.
"He loved you," he whispers, his mouth hot against your cheek. "He loved you so much."
You shut your eyes, fighting back more tears and try to will away the grief that is clawing it's way up your throat. Instead you think about the firm muscle of Damon's arms around you and the raw familiarity of his body on yours. Sure, you had loved Stefan, but Damon was no stranger.
"I loved you too," he murmurs, speaking into your shoulder. "And I know that I'm not Stefan—but god I loved you. I still love you."
I know, you want to say. I know. But you can't quite find the words and Damon doesn't push you to.
He just hugs you like he knows it might be the last time. Because after this you'll need space and time to heal, and he'll give it to you. Unwillingly, but he'll give it to you. You deserved that much.
You want to tell him that you will never learn how to love anyone quite like him. Because he had rearranged your ribs and crawled into you at some point without the intention to stay. But instead you don't say anything because you're not ready yet, don't know if you'll ever be again, and you don't want to make promises that you can't keep.
Regardless of the contradiction to the space that you have asked for, most nights you still find yourself in the Salvatore manor, like a dog waiting for someone who's never going to return home. You know that Ric would rather you home, and you've tried explaining to him your need to be there, but you really don't even understand it yourself. Sometimes you spend days there at a time, lingering between the kitchen, the sofa, and one of the spare bedrooms without much of a routine.
Damon's heavy weight shifts the bed as he eases onto the mattress behind you, having found you in one of the many spare bedrooms after his shower. He is the exception to your lack of routine. He shapes his body around yours with practiced ease. A sigh escapes his nose as he settles in, his nose in your hair, chest pressed to your back. You hug your arms around yourself tighter, as if that could somehow communicate to him that you need to feel his closeness. It does, and his arms encircling your waist tighten. Neither of you say anything for a long time.
He has been quiet for weeks now, uncharacteristically so. Maybe part of it is due to the lack of bristling arguments with Stefan. The two of you have learned to live around each other surprisingly well. Much like two ghosts inhabiting a big empty house. Somehow you keep ending up in the same bed.
You turn to face him, the sheets shuffling as you move. His hand lifts from your waist, hovering to allow you the initiation of any sort of contact. Even before now, he has always kept a big brotherly distance from you; respectful but achingly familiar.
You move your head so that you are both sharing the same pillow, your bodies only separated by a sliver of space in between. Lifting your own hand from beneath the sheets, you grab his wrist and place his palm on your waist. The corners of his mouth vaguely lift into a smile. Your chest feels surprisingly light at the sight of it. Damon has always been breathtakingly handsome.
But he's always been Damon.
His fingertips trail up from your waist. He runs them up and down the ridges of your ribs, the blunt of his nails barely grazing your skin. His heavy hand slips up your body to cradle your cheek, his blue eyes wandering over your face while his thumb caresses your cheekbone. You tilt your chin up towards him so that your noses brush. Damon swallows and his lips part, exhaling softly.
His brow is less tense that you have seen it in a long time. No longer set with that look of insistent worry. You don't mean for him to worry so much about you.
"This doesn't have to be anything more than you want it to be," he murmurs, stopping you before you both edge too close.
Normally anyone would have taken this as some sort of forewarning, a reminder that he is not responsible for whatever follows after. This is Damon after all. All the same, you see it in his eyes that this isn't him warning you. He really means it; whatever you choose, it's fine. He'll be fine.
The reality of his continuous presence has just begun to sink in. It has been in the forefront of your mind that he's been restraining himself, hoping that eventually this transitionary stage will fade into something more. You have never imagined that he would settle for what little you're giving him. It is so uncharacteristic of him, to settle for anything less than everything.
This change that has happened within him, you have been blind to. There was a reason you had fallen for Stefan. He was the righteous brother, ever faithful and always gentle. And then there was Damon, dark and volatile with his ravenous Cain complex. Never would you have described Damon as compromising and steadfast, but here he is, laying beside you, saying that he would be content with nothing more other than to lie next to you and exist in your presence.
You grab his hand with your own, following his fingers as they glide down to your neck. "That's a heavy promise for a man who's going to live forever."
Damon thumbs at the hollow of your throat, but his blue eyes are fixed on your own. "Even if I had a thousand lifetimes, I would spend all but one choosing you."
"And with that one?" you ask, swallowing beneath his touch.
He sighs, still smiling faintly. "I would step back. Give you your happy ending with him." Only the slight twitch of the corner of his mouth gives him away. That was his one tell, that self deprecating look.
"I am happy," you assure him.
"But I'm not Stefan."
You don't say anything for a moment. Instead you prolong your gaze on his face, taking in the undeniable attractiveness of it. Now that you think about it, you can't even pin down the moment where you started allowing yourself to even consider such a thought. At what point had you started to think of him as anything more than a friend?
"No, you're not."
He swallows, and for the first time tonight, the look in his eyes is hurt. "And that's it? It's just always going to be Stefan?"
You want to be able to tell him that you're moving on, it's just that it still feels like you're hurting all of the time. "I don't know. Maybe if I had met you first..."
Damon's eyes look away, like he's taking a moment to compose himself, before he sighs. "Right... right."
*four years ago*
"New OR–LINS."
"New Orleenz."
"No!" you exclaim, your chest squeezing tight due to lack of air it's getting from laughing and the intensity of his million watt smile.
Damon grins lazily, his pearly white teeth on display again. "I'm telling you, my parents are from the south. It's New Orleens."
The action only seems to make your chest tighter. You feel slightly dizzy from a combination of the champagne and electric nerves. All you can seem do is laugh at the earnesty in his voice and hope he blames your flushed cheeks on the alcohol.
Damon Salvatore. The mystery man of Mystic Falls. He's got a front page picture face with all of the amenities: unsettling, crystal blue eyes, jet black hair, and a wicked smile. The same smile that is currently rendering you speechless.
"You're staring."
Quickly, you tear your eyes away from his face. You glance to his nearly empty glass of whiskey and then back to his now smirking face. "Sorry," you reply, embarrassed at having been caught staring. You were a grown woman, not some teenage girl fawning over an older guy. And he was older, you just couldn't put your finger on how much older.
Damon just grins wryly, his pink lips pressed together to conceal most of his smile. He hums, sitting back on the bar stool. "It's okay. You're not the only one."
You glance over your shoulder and make eye contact with Matt. He stares back at you with that signature worried expression on his face. You sigh and turn back towards the bar, acting as though you didn't just see him.
You haven't talked for most of the night and it's looking like it might be better if you kept it that way. You'd fought again over his parents. It wasn't his fault. None of it was. He was Matt, your best friend since elementary school for god's sake. Matt, who was caring and loving and honest and too good to you.
You focus on the little bit of champagne left in your glass. You can feel the burn of Damon's eyes on you.
"Hey, I get it. It's okay," he assures you. His hand settles on your knee under the bar. It's not nearly as warm as you were expecting it to be but it still makes your skin feel hot.
You sigh, unable to look at him and staring to realize that what you're doing is ridiculous. You had a boyfriend. It was wrong for you to be sitting here, talking with a random man and letting him but you drinks. Even if he was gorgeous.
You want to ask him if he has a girlfriend because maybe that would make this whole thing a little bit easier to take. Then you could just get up and walk away. But you can't bring yourself to even look him, much less say anything to his face. Maybe you don't even want to know. Him being single would make this whole thing worse. It would put the ball back in your field.
"Is everything alright?" he asks, leaning in. This time his hand travels further up your knee. His cologne is overwhelming in the sense that if you don't get away from him, you'll do something irrational.
"Excuse me," you manage, jumping up from your seat and tipping the stool as you go. You don't wait to see if it falls because you can't risk looking back at his face.
Your feet carry you in the direction of Caroline and Bonnie, brushing directly past Matt, who you try not to look at. Thankfully he doesn't try to stop you. When you reach your friends, Caroline turns towards you smiling, but it grows smaller as she takes in your look of urgency.
"Hey!— What's wrong? Is everything okay?" Her hand finds your elbow, the worry on her face evident.
You place your hand on top of hers. "Really, it's nothing. I'm fine. Just some random guy at the bar," you reassure her, feeling your heat rate as it begins to settle.
A look of gentle understanding crosses her face and she gives your arm a reassuring squeeze. "Things are going to work out between you and Matt. I know they will. Okay?"
You swallow and try not to let her see the doubt on your own face. "I know. Thanks, Care."
This time she breaks out into a real smile, grabbing your hand. "Now come on! Let's dance!"
You allow her to drag out onto the middle of the floor in the grill, meeting up with Bonnie. It's easy to let your worries go for even just a little while when you're with them. It's a Friday night and you're with your best friends and there's absolutely nothing to worry about. It's kinda of like what they say, nothing bad ever happens in Mystic Falls.
"I'm going to take it as a compliment that you're talking to everyone here but me."
The voice coming from behind you makes you jump. You hadn't even heard his footsteps coming up behind you. It was like he had appeared out of thin air. You could have sworn he wasn't there a moment ago.
You'd stepped out of the backdoor of The Grill for a moment, needing some fresh air. More like needing to get away from Matt's wounded puppy dog eyes, but air all the same. You had nearly all but forgotten the handsome stranger at the bar until now.
Damon approaches you, his hands hidden in the pockets of his black leather jacket. He looks no less confident than he did earlier at the bar, that easy smile still on his lips, charming blue eyes shining in the moonlight.
"You gotta be careful. They say there are vampires around here."
For once you allow your shoulders to relax, and you let out a sigh. "Hey. I'm sorry," you begin, shaking your head. "I'm having a rough night. It's just that I'm probably about to break up with my boyfriend except I'm not supposed to break up with him because he's perfect. But then he starts talking about getting married and I'm not ready to get married. I'm barley nineteen—"
Damon just stands there, listening quietly to your rant and watching you with curious eyes. That's all you've wanted for past week. Just someone to listen without trying to convince you that Matt was the perfect guy.
Even when your rant ends, Damon remains quiet. He sucks on his pearly teeth before replying. "Sometimes just because he's the perfect guy doesn't mean he's the right guy. You can take it from me when I say I don't regret not being the perfect guy." His face pinches briefly into something that looks like hurt as he says, "It's no fun anyway."
Admittedly, you kind of laugh at his revelation. "Because you would know all about that. Have you looked in a mirror lately, Damon? In what world are you not perfect?"
His mouth twitches up but he doesn't really make the effort to smile. "You'd be surprised."
You swallow, watching him as he walks a bit closer. "What do you mean?"
"Do you have any idea what it's like to no longer be human?" Your brows furrow but Damon cuts you off before you can answer. "You don't. It's terrible. I hate it. I hate it more than anything in the world. But what I hate even more is that you're going to have to forget about me."
His hand cups your cheek and you know you need to step back, you need to get away from him, but your legs are frozen and you can't move. Your heart is back to pounding in your chest like it was earlier. You want to scream. For anyone, for Matt, but Damon's hand is cupping your jaw and he could shut you up the second you opened your mouth.
His blue eyes are staring directly into yours. They're just as unsettling as they were when he caught your eye at the bar earlier. What is possibly even more terrifying is that you can't look away.
And then he's just... gone.
Your heart is still thumping in your chest, but when you look around, there's no one there.
Had you been talking to someone?
*present day*
There's something that he's not telling you, but you won't push him to, not right now. Right now it's good to just lay with him and know that you're both here and that he's not going anywhere.
He could tell you. He could be selfish and tell you that he did meet you first. That you were never Stefan's to begin with.
But that's the thing about being Cain. He will always be his brother's keeper.

Younger Siblings Tournament Bracket Reveal
A few things I want to mention before I reveal the bracket (and make the post really long because all the matchups will be listed in text):
Seeding of fictional characters in tumblr polls is inherently subjective. I did try to make it so that more popular characters/media would (most likely) face off against each other in later rounds, but I may be overestimating or underestimating the popularity of some characters/media, especially ones I'm not familiar with. There are some round 1 matchups that are probably a closer match but none of them are between the strongest candidates... I think.
The more niche characters will probably get obliterated in the first round as per Squimbus' Law. This is a tumblr poll and I do fully expect more popular characters to sweep, but that doesn't mean you can't encourage your friends to give your niche faves a fighting chance.
Also there are some matchups I literally just thought would be funny. Please don't take this too seriously.

Wait wait wait…… Pit Babe is… Omegaverse…what…. Did ……. Did I miss this? Is it obvious from the trailers …….did…….. what?!????
Anon, I didn't get to watch the first episode of Pit Babe, but . . .
I don't know what The Omegaverse is.
Like, I know what it is, but I don't know what it is, ya know?
And it's because I don't want to.
I'm actually really good at that. I went to see Rogue One in theaters even though I haven't seen any other Star Wars film because of Diego Luna. Period. I had absolutely no idea what the movie would be about beside it would have Diego Luna in it, so I was the only person at that midnight showing VERY upset that the Death Star KILLED EVERYONE! My color-coded ass thought the black and white solider people were good versus bad. All of them are bad apparently. It was not a good night for me in that Cineplex.
This is also why I have no real idea what any Mame series is about including TharnType or any Chinese bromance like The Untamed or Word of Honor. Just like that tiger tattoo in Unforgotten Night, which I also did not watch, I know of them, but I don't know them. That's for the best. I can't be a dick about things if I don't really know anything about them.
I know there is a Slut for Christ in the show because @sparklyeyedhimbo and @kayatoasted told me, but I will not be Diego Luna-ed into watching Pit Babe for one slut when that slut comes with a universe of knowledge I am unwilling to learn.
Note: This is not a request for information. I don't wanna know.
I watched Teen Wolf and that horrible Teen Wolf movie, so I'm sure the Alpha/Beta/Omega + smell kink is transferable to The Omegaverse, and that's all I need to know to know I don't want to know more.
Because based on what I do know, it's a "no" for me.
Can't wait to watch Pit Babe from my dash!

“Usually,” Charles repeats numbly.
Pierre smiles, rueful. “It is harder with you.”
2 • in faith (sebchal, mature, 1.8k)
At his side now, Charles sat taller than Sebastian with a weariness in his sunlit eyes that belied his relative youth and beauty. A simple golden circlet lay nestled in his hair, his only adornment.
"You might smile," Sebastian whispered, the rough edge of his untamed beard brushing against Charles's cheek. "One might think you are at your funeral."

When he reaches the station, Alex finds Charles curled up with his knees against his chest on the lone splintering bench by the platform, pushing a roller bag back and forth with the tip of his shoe.

"I already know what you look like naked," Pierre reminds him with a smirk and Charles flushes at the implication, which is stupid. They've been living out of each other's pockets since they were children, before Charles had ever considered what it might be like to be wrapped up in Pierre.
"I am not," Charles finally admits. "Not naked." Pierre's eyebrows climb up his face again, intrigued.
5 • a thing most new (piarles, explicit, 3.6k)
Pierre comes back home with a mustache. It is neatly trimmed, following the line of his full mouth.
Charles feels as if he is greeting a stranger when Lorenzo comes back from the station with Pierre in tow. He hangs back toward the end of the hallway—everyone in the house has come out to welcome Pierre back from his first year away at university, popular as he was with the rest of the staff.
6 • as unchanging as the sea (piarles, mature, 2k)
Like most of the petits rats, Charles keeps a small box of personal effects in the dressing rooms. A bit of powder and a nub of rouge for his cheeks, a bundle of letters from home, a sachet of dried herbs from his grandmother’s garden that has long lost its scent. There is a cross embroidered on the yellowed cloth and although Charles no longer attends mass, it is still dear to him as is the thin gold crucifix that he hides in a loose panel at the bottom of the wooden box.
warnings: implied off-stage sex work with coercion/violence, typical of the historical period/setting. this is non-graphic and obliquely referenced in the text.
7 • little bright things (piarles, explicit, 2.2k)
The skirt is too short, stealthily taken from the box of outgrown things Marie, the gardener’s daughter, had packed up to donate to the church. It barely covers Charles’s ass, hem skimming the tops of his thighs, but the waist had just fit with a cream-colored polo shirt tucked in. Charles’s professors might have scolded him about the contrasting whites, but they aren’t here right now. It is just Charles and the moonlight and the soft strains of music filtering in through the high windows.
And, of course, Pierre.

Alex nearly spits out her drink when she spots Charles in a corner by the windows. Charles has more than put in the effort tonight, wearing a glittery tight little mini skirt and strappy sandals that show off the long line of her legs and the pert curve of her ass where it meets her thighs.

At the altar, Charles’s hands trembled as he took the cup of sweet wine from the priest and drank. It was only a small sip, but he felt the rush of heat spreading from his stomach, making him dizzy in a matter of seconds. There was a soft tickle at the back of his hand, barely even a touch. The tip of the Wolf’s tail swayed back at Charles’s elbow. Startled, Charles met the Wolf’s eyes. They were a shocking shade of icy blue and almost human in their regard.

“I carry a message from the abbot of Maranello,” Brother Charles announced, voice ringing across the courtyard like a bell. He wore the short white tunic of a novice under his cloak, which was enough to set Sebastian on edge. As far as Sebastian knew, Maranello did not send initiates on missions before they had taken their full vows. There were too many temptations outside of the abbey walls, the former abbot had told Sebastian once, his mouth loose with wine and good humor.
Brother Charles would have been a temptation himself, long dark lashes sweeping across his delicately carved cheekbones. His eyes were bright and unguarded as they met Sebastian’s without a hint of fear.

When his girlfriend had first told him she wasn’t coming with him anymore to Nicolas’s wedding, Pierre had been confused, worried even that something urgent had happened—a death in the family, perhaps. It had only been when she had failed to answer, unusually hesitant, that it had become clear to him that there was nothing wrong—except them. It’s not just this, she had said, unusually somber, and Pierre had understood.
So Pierre had come home the night before with just a single suitcase and a long garment bag holding his best suit.

most popular creation of the year: by hits, "in my ribs and under my chest," aka the corset fic... but by kudos, "but i like you, we can howl at the moon" just edges out ahead (ha!).
under-appreciated creation of the year: i'm so thankful for any bit of love & appreciation i have received tbh!!! if i had to choose one thing... perhaps "a blessing, a fable" because i had this idea percolating in my mind for so long, that it getting out there in the world even in the form that it is in is a minor miracle to me sdfkljdslkfjljg
most fun thing to make: "a thing most new" and "give a kiss, get a cab" again sdflkjsdlkfj or honestly any of my off-the-cuff ficlets which usually come out of me being extra ridiculous and self-indulgent.
