Heya folks. Unfortunately I have a bit of bad news from my end. On Friday, April 19th my apartment building caught on fire. Thankfully no one was seriously harmed but I can't say the same for the things people owned. The fire started next door to us on the bottom floor and crept its way up. We were alerted to the blaze at 2am and had to flee. We couldn't catch our cat in time before the smoke became too heavy but we are very lucky we found her later, terrified but alive. All four families, including ours, were displaced after the fire. Two apartments suffered intense damage while mine and the one below mine were spared the worst of it. However, the smoke damage was bad enough that it's deemed unfit to live in. We were only allowed in long enough to grab essentials and take a few pictures, but since then we've had to live in an extended stay hotel. Until the investigation into the cause of the fire is complete everything we own has to stay put.

Ironically, we were gearing up to move this upcoming Friday into a new place. We were in the process of packing but never got to finish. We'd planned our budget down to the dollar to afford the move but now we're stretched thin because of all of the unexpected expenses. While our renters insurance is meant to reimburse us for out of pocket costs we don't know how long that will take and our new place will be expecting upfront payment on the day of move-in, which has now been eaten into.

I've backspaced and rewritten this paragraph at least ten times. I'm not good at asking for help, in truth. I'm proud, stubborn, and I think I can fix everything. I can't fix this. We've never been in this situation before and uncertainty is my greatest enemy.

I understand everyone is under financial strain and if you aren't able to donate I'm entirely in your corner. If you are, a link to my ko-fi will be provided at the bottom of the post. Salute, Larian Studios

Heya folks! It’s been a while, I hope everyone is doing well. I’m breaking my hiatus to discuss the recent announcement made by Larian Studios on their steam development blog. I will add the link here for those who wish to read the blog in its entirety but be warned, there are patch seven spoilers within. I wish to focus on a particular section in the final three paragraphs of the document, which reads as follows:

“Being given the chance to develop a game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe has been a dream come true for all of us. But as Swen recently confirmed, we won't be introducing any major new narrative content to the story of Baldur's Gate 3 or its origin characters and companions, nor will we be making expansions or Baldur’s Gate 4. As an independent studio since 1996, we value the freedom to follow our creativity wherever it leads. In this case, after six years in the Forgotten Realms and much discussion and rumination, we’ve decided to seize this opportunity to develop our own IPs. We’re currently working on two new projects and we couldn’t be more excited about what the future has in store. It’s still early days - we’ll tell you more about those later down the line. But know that even as our focus turns to these new games, the sensibilities that brought you Baldur’s Gate 3 are alive and well here at the Larian castle. We’re fueled by the very same fire in our bellies, one that drives us to create immersive experiences shaped by your choices, and we can’t wait for you to join us on this next adventure.”

I will admit, when I first read this I felt a tinge of disappointment. As someone who had a lot of hope in seeing some stories continued, Kar’niss especially, this feels like the once open door is now sealed shut permanently. To be entirely fair, I always looked at an expanded Kar’niss story with skeptical optimism; hope for the best but expect the worst. After all, Kar’niss was designed as a throw away plot device that had no real bearing on the over-all narrative. Most of what has been derived of the character is entirely fan driven and not based on anything confirmed by Larian as a whole. Furthermore, there were many fan favorites that had a larger base than our dear drider and chances are even if Larian did decide to do an expansion, Kar’niss still wouldn’t make the cut.

With that said, I respect Larian in their choice. To expand on other characters would cost a lot of money and time. To juggle that alongside making new games would be unrealistic, and I understand their point of view completely. We also don’t know what is going on behind the scenes which could’ve influenced their choices all the more. Over all this situation mirrors the old saying, “Don’t cry because it’s over, be happy that it happened.” I am happy, and grateful. Without Baldur’s Gate 3 this blog wouldn’t exist. All of the amazing interactions I’ve had over several months would’ve never occurred, nor would I have found the courage to publicly publish stories to the internet. While I don’t consider myself an awful writer, I never believed my work was good enough for those outside of my personal circle. To say that my confidence has blossomed over the last few months is an understatement, and I owe that to the fantastic support of those in the fandom as well as those close to me. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

With Larian closing up the BG3 shop after the next few patches the question becomes, what’s next? For me, I don’t know. Sadly I’ve been swamped lately and it’s not destined to slow down until the middle of May. By then I hope to have a sufficient breather so I can return to projects I’ve left on the back burner in the interim. The Kar’niss blog will remain in place along with all of the archived stories, theories, and miscellaneous posts that are present. I still have a few writing requests that have waited a lot longer than I anticipated, so forgive me for the delay. I may also make a new blog that is dedicated solely to writing and other fandoms of interest. When the time comes I’ll post it here and folks can follow it if they wish but I’ll understand if not. Regardless of what the future holds, I am very stoked with the experiences I’ve had within the Baldur’s Gate 3 fandom. I’m a painfully shy individual and I am not a spotlight seeker by any stretch of the imagination. This section of the internet allowed me to expand my horizons a bit proving that you can indeed teach an old writer new tricks.

I look forward to seeing what is in store for Larian Studios. So long as they stick to their passion for making good games and treating their customers like people instead of money cows to be milked, then I will support every game release that comes in the future. While I’m sad that the many questions I had about Kar’niss will go unanswered, at least the drider will live on through the stories, art and other creative works made by his fans. In that way he is eternal, as are all of the other characters we’ve grown to love over this journey.

I hope to return on a more regular basis soon. Until then drider army, take care of yourselves and thank you for your continued support.

I’m having one of those days where I’m desperately trying to cut a deal with my anxiety. It’s like working with the devil where you know they’ll keep coming back no matter how much you sacrifice.

“Look, I know you want to remind me of that humiliating thing I did when I was sixteen, play it on loop and then amplify it as if it’s happening in real time right now. But I’ve got deadlines and things that require my focus. If you could box this thought and shelve it for a few hours so I can work then I promise I’ll let it out at bedtime and I’ll get four hours of sleep instead of my usual six. How’s that sound?”

Sometimes the demon relents and accepts the peace treaty. But sometimes it decides that violence was the only clear choice and it piles on new intrusive thoughts that are worse than the starter, reminding me that I’m at its mercy and I can only win when it feels generous enough to let me. There are days I come out victorious but I don’t think today will be one of them.

I can’t afford to lose.

Just found your blog, and I absolutely love it! IN the dream scenario of Kar'niss being saved by tav/durge (larian please), do you think he would turn to Eilistraee? She seems like one of the most chill gods in dnd lore (imo) and I feel like she would want to help Kar'niss heal. OR do you think after the absolute he just wouldn't fuck with any of the gods. (Lowkey asking this because one of my Tavs is an ex-szarkai cleric of Eilistraee, and he's the one I ship with Kar'niss because I have no shame).

Thanks for the compliment! To answer your question, it depends on a few factors. In the case of your Tav, assuming he is a positive influence in his life, then I believe he could be convinced to follow the teachings of Eilistraee. Kar’niss is an individual who desires approval and acceptance. If he trusts Tav then he is more likely to follow their lead in most if not all scenarios. On the other hand, if the goal is to grant independence and choice to him then he could actively decide that he is through with deity worship and would prefer a more atheist approach to life. If someone had an evil Tav then they could convince Kar’niss to worship them instead and form a relationship where he is entirely dependent on them. The sad part about Kar’niss is how easy he is to manipulate. His mind is broken and his self esteem is in the tank, he is an easy target for anyone with ill-intentions. I feel like he and Astarion share a great deal of overlap but that is a discussion for another day.

In conclusion, it’s very viable that Kar’niss could lean toward Eilistraee with enough persuasion and influence. At the end of the day he just wants to feel safe and protected and anywhere he can find that is where he is likely to gravitate toward.

Heya, this is entirely and I mean ENTIRELY speculation on my part. HOWEVER: due to the many places in Larian has studios, I wouldn't put it past them to have based their decision making when picking Kar'niss' name in real world linguistics for a little morbid pun. His name sounds an AWFUL lot like the word "carniça" which is the Brazilian spelling (and effectively homophonous to his name) to the Latin word Carnitia/Carnis (meat); and it means carrion nowadays. Much love from a Brazilian reader!

We welcome speculation in this house. In fact, speculation is the only thing holding this rickety shack together! This was interesting to read and, while dark, could very much so work if that is what they were going for. Kar’niss is a meat shield for the Absolute and completely disposable even if he himself doesn’t see it that way. To think his name is a play on words that basically means “dead meat” is both funny and depressing at the same time. This guy can’t catch a break, it’s almost like he was Larian’s punching bag. Thanks for the cool bit of information from the Brazillian side of things. I love factoids like these!
