recs for a beginner in greek? my interest is spurred via ancient greek, but i'm sure there are tons of tv shows and films that i'm missing out on
Do you mean Greek course recs? Or media recs? Couldn't tell.
If this is about courses, right now Duolingo is the one I would recommend the most for beginning up to reaching a low intermediate level.
Tons would be... an overstatement haha I do have some good recs though. You can watch all content in ERTFLIX, the ott platform of the Greek state TV channels, which is entirely for free and available worldwide. The TV series I personally recommend there is Καρτ Ποστάλ (Card Postal), it is gorgeous, introspective, philosophical. Then there is another famous show there, Κάνε ότι κοιμάσαι (Pretend you are asleep), which is crime / mystery / thriller, but I haven't watched it. A lot of people also love Τα καλύτερα μας χρόνια (Our best years), which is a family / period show set in the 60s-70s. I haven't watched this one either. Another personal rec would be Αγάπη παράνομη (Unlawful love), which is based on an old novel, but it gets very dark in a realistic way, so that's something you should know. Other than that, ERTFLIX also has foreign content with Greek subtitles, with which you could practice. And it has great Greek documentaries.
You could watch Maestro in Blue on Netflix. Season 2 will be out this spring! Beautiful show, fantastic performances, great music.
There's also a man, George, who has been making English subtitles for various classic Greek series, comedies and dramas, including top tier Είσαι το ταίρι μου (You are my soulmate), a hugely clever and unusual rom-com, Στο παρά πέντε (In the nick of time), a crime and mystery comedy which is considered one of the two best Greek comedies ever and must have the thickest plot I have seen in a comedy (very popular show with the Greek tumblrs here) and OF COURSE ΤΟ ΝΗΣΙ ΑΚΑ THE ISLAND, a drama which is the best Greek series to date and for which I have entirely normal reactions. Here I link the post I had made about George's platform.
If you don't care to have subtitles at all you can find these shows and many others in DailyMotion and especially the website greek-movies.com. (this needs vpn, you know). This one has it all. Literally all, including the classics, classic Greek cinema of the 50s-60s-70s was by far the best era.
I am currently watching Η Μάγισσα (The Witch). There are some talks that it could go to some international streaming platform after it ends but you can watch it in the aforementioned website anyway without subtitles. I love this show, it's semi-daily, so this season will have 70 episodes, and obviously it comes with the limitations of daily shows, but as semi-daily shows go, it is bloody fantastic, I am obsessed right now.
YouTube also has a lot of old Greek series. The first thing you should do after starting any Modern Greek course is to start watching Κωνσταντίνου και Ελένης (Constantine and Helen's) on youtube, the best Greek comedy, or maybe the best comedy in the universe, with only slight exaggeration 😜😇 The aforementioned Είσαι το ταίρι μου, is also available on youtube with George's subtitles.

Funny thing about (some) greek shows is how they play with what's ethically wrong but you, as the watcher, will support the characters that commit the ethically wrong "crime" because there's an asshole who's at fault more
And it's not like, your local YA criminal, it's just some women who definitely don't want to be evil
Like, oh some women are tricking a sick man in order to steal his money, that sounds pretty bad doesn't it?
Two women swapped identities and now one is catfishing the other one's online friend, meanwhile the other one is mocking an entire family by pretending to be their future daughter in law? Kinda bad isn't it?
BUT
You can't blame them.
The sick man was a fucking asshole, a misogynist, he married 3 women and ruined their life. They all hate each other. But when the 3 women plan this whole thing to steal his money they become friends, they end up caring for the sick man they no longer chase the money, and no one gets it cause they didn't deserved it. None of them. (And what happened with the random girl that got the 7 billion € was a whole different story)
And well, on the second story you can probably blame Vicky, she was a bitch who did the whole thing cause she was a brat, every episode proved that Stella had a good heart and no intention of hurting and lying to anyone, she just got into a whole mess (tho some people might disagree and say she could have said the truth, but a) then the show wouldn't happen, b) she is a good human, I forgive her)

You should see "Persephone" on Ertflix. It's a Greek-Japanese production where a group of Japanese girls become witnesses to the reenactment of the myth (though it draws a lot from the poem by Ritsos, as well and is a bit "culture-y" so it can be a bit dramatic and strange at times) as well as play the part of the Chorus.
It's an incredible movie, and the two cultures work together wonderfully.
Due to Life happening, I was too late and Ertflix took it down before I could watch it 😩 I wanted to answer this message with my thoughts about the movie but now I can't 😔 I only managed to see a small part of it uploaded on Youtube.

I like how it takes place in modern times in a modern setting, and it looks theatrical with the Japanese girls being the Chorus! It does feel a bit odd but it manages to be organic (as much as it can, given the style) and its messages get across in an unconventional but non-pretentious way. I understood what was happening and the symbolism without trying to imagine things like "oooh the lights are four, so it could be the four seasons, and the curtains are blue to symbolize melancholy" 😂
I am searching for it now because I am curious to see more but I can't find it anywhere 😞 If someone has found it, please let me know!

This new Interpretation of Medusa in the new episode of Percy jackson, as a survivor of abuse that directs her pain, because of missing justice, against people that she associates with her abusers, shows not only how much Rick Riordan has grown as a storyteller and interpreter of mythology but also how much we as a community have grown in interpreting and understanding the deeper meaning of mythological storys and the context they were made in.

You know how everyone has heard a slightly different version of the same Greek myth? Like there’s a version we’re Icarus falls in love with Apollo and there’s a version were he knows the wings aren’t gonna hold but keeps flying anyway and a version were he doesn’t hear his fathers warning. In one version of the story, Athena is punishing Medusa, in another she’s giving her a gift. There’s a story where Hades kidnaps Persephone and one where he helps her escape from her mother. All the same myths but told in different ways depending on who tells them and to whom. Slightly different morals to gain from them but always the same basic concept.
And I just think it’s so fitting that the same is happening with the pjo show. Details change! In this version, Annabeth’s dad loves her from the beginning. In this version, they enter Medusa’s house knowing who she is. And this changes the meaning to reflect the time in which the story is told, and the people who tell it. Myths are meant to be retold again and again, thats the beauty of them. It doesn’t mean that one version is better than the other. And I love that Rick Riordan said I’ve told this story before, but what do I want to say this time? And he squeezes so much meaning into it!

Hc that Hermes created the Lin Manuel persona as a joke but Hamilton was wildly successful so he just kept it up and Apollo is FURIOUS that a) he’s overstepped into his domain and b) he’s so damn GOOD at it (much to the chagrin of literally everyone)
It’s like the dam cow thing all over again, but this time instead of stealing fifty of his cows Hermes stole his bit.

I just remembered that show in which the business woman had a relationship with a coworker but that was forbidden so in order to cover it up she edited herself and her roommate in photos of pride so everyone would think she's a lesbian but someone saw a date in the photo and realized that at the time she was in a different country in a very important meeting and called her out and then they fired her cause she was straight ogchofotfoyd

Do any of you ever wonder if Camp Half-Blood accidentally brought in a demigod of a different pantheon before?
This would be especially hilarious if it happens sometime after The Last Olympian/Heroes of Olympus, where the gods are required to claim their kids quickly.
A whole day passes, and the new demigod needs to sleep in the Hermes Cabin and Percy is furious. Meanwhile, the Greek Gods are pointing at each other and shouting, contacting the most obscure of mini gods. Chaos erupts on Olympus as every deity in Greek Mythology is called upon and interrogated. Hermes hasn't run around so much in centuries.
Hecate sits in silence, fully aware of what's happening, but enjoying the show too much to intervene.

Thinking about how Hermes intentionally wasted Percy and Annabeths time in the casino hoping to change Lukes’ fate. And how everything Hermes has done since finding out about Lukes future will be in service of delaying/changing his fate. He said Poseidon warned him that no matter how much he tried to help, he would just make things worse. Yet he is still trying to help Luke. Still trying to make things right. But Luke has already chosen his path. Pure Greek tragedy
