Grumpy x Sunshine is like a dynamic that I stretch to its limits to find and love in my favorite ships.
When I hear this dynamic, I first think of cartoonized versions of ships where one is just annoyed by everything and the other is so optimistic it’s painful to brain cells.
It’s not a pretty look, basically.
But then I take some creative liberty: Grumpy isn’t grumpy at all—in fact, they’re mistaken as mean, or cold, or emotionless. It makes them appear to most as “grumpy,” but they’re kind underneath harsh actions.
I like the reveal of a cold character actually being the most trusted one all along—being mistaken for the worst when they’re actually trying the hardest and disregarding their own happiness along the way for the sake of the greater good.
And Sunshine… Sunshine isn’t actually all-around bubbly and endlessly optimistic… they’re just kind. Unendingly, without stipulations, beautifully kind. They, too, are mistaken to be one way and turn out the other; instead of mean for Grumpy, Sunshine is just mistaken to always be happy. Maybe they have the saddest backstory of them all; maybe that’s how Sunshine is able to connect with Grumpy.
Their misunderstood personalities—being seen as “grumpy” and “a ball of sunshine” by outsiders—is exactly how I view grumpy x sunshine dynamics: a completely twisted version of the otherwise straightforward name for it.
I fall for this type of ship. Every. Time.

Everyone likes to talk about enemies to lovers this, enemies to lovers that, which, valid, but like, the emotional turmoil of lovers to enemies? The pain of facing off against someone you once trusted turning into resentment, the intimate understanding you had becoming a lethal weapon -- especially when it would just be so easy to fall back on these lingering feelings? Chef’s kiss.

I find it interesting how so many of the mean girl/queen be characters who want to destroy the main protagonist's life are revealed to have mommy issues.

Some thoughts
As someone whose both into Maribat (even if I haven't been as involved lately) and BatPham/DPxDC its hilarious that people have come to the conclusion that yes;
The Bats are definitely getting involved with these tired teen heroes that just so happen to have black hair and blue eyes and totally Wayne Adoption Bait TM
Both end up needing the Bats' help because of the whole World's Greatest Detective shtick regardless of the premise (Anti-Ecto Laws and Uncovering Hawkmoth's ID)
If we're going to the Shit's Already Hit the Fan Route then both parties have concluded that the best place to lay low was definitely the crime capital of America; Gotham City
(Even if they do so they try to stay under the Bats radar because of his no metas allowed rule (thats fanon btw) even if neither actually qualifies as metahuman (magic and a medical condition really)
Jason definitely has something going on because of the Pit that can be cured/treated by means of magic or ghost shit
Constantine is probably involved or is getting dragged into this mess whether he wants to or not
(If involved Captain Marvel probably has passing knowledge about the GZ or Miraculous)
Both Danny and Marinette being smol and no one expects them to be Stronk
Same duo also has been thrusted into unwanted responsibilities apart from the whole Teen Hero thing at 14 (Mari's age is unfortunately still up in the air but I'm pretty sure that's her age during the origins eps, thanks Astruc)
(Speaking of pretty sure both fandoms disregard what the showrunners/creators say about the show also but thats besides the point)
(Ghost King Danny (fanon but v good idea) and Grand Guardian Marinette (canon unfortunately for her because sure why not give this girl more anxiety))
Government is corrupt and is probably the reason why these kids get no help from experienced heroes
I just find this all hilarious looking into it
Also the fact im like 75% sure that both group may have gotten hate from the main DC fandom because the crossovers were seeping into their tags too

Are there any tropes or whump ideas you can't believe no one has done or there is little of?
I say this because I adore your fic "pull out the pin." Possession trope is so WHUMPY and makes me giggle and curl my toesies like an idiot. I don't care if the "Fight it" "This isn't you" "give him back" dialogue is cringe, I gobble that shit as if I were in a famine. It has so much potential and I'm so surprised how underused it is.
Love your work! Love your account! You inspire me to write - one day at least haha❤️ 😔✊
Thank you so much! Yeah even if it is cringe I’m gonna write it 😅 I hope you write someday!
I would probably say eldritch and/or Gotham being weird, giving the Batfamily powers, etc. I know there are fics out there with those that are great, but it didn’t seem to catch on as much as you’d think with all the canon source material.
When I was writing my eldritch superbat fic there weren’t a ton of similar fics. I then wrote that post about cryptid/weird batkids getting powers over time and that seems to have sparked a few new fics which is awesome! I’ve been reading all of them hahaha.
People tell me pretty frequently that the mind bond fic is rare for DC. I would also say that a lot of the older fandom tropes (reincarnation, royal AUs, sex pollen) have also decreased in recent years, but that’s not always a bad thing! Just means fandom interests are shifting to other tropes.
I’ve mentioned to fellow writers, in the whump realm, that we don’t cover Clark in blood nearly enough. And we definitely don’t talk enough about the batkids getting hurt trying to emulate Bruce, not necessarily in his vigilante activities, but in his social/Brucie Wayne identity ones.
As always, if anyone has recs to prove me wrong here, I happily welcome them!

I just saw someone comment abt accidentally outing someone as a cute fanfic trope and lets all not do that. Lets absolutely not do that. Outing someone is scary for that person and it can go very wrong. Accidents happen, but someone might not forgive you for them, because it is very much not okay. Lets not turn that into a funny fanfic trope y'all
(also im not gonna say, who did it bc idk that person and I dont wanna start shit, just throwing this into the void bc im tired.)
Experience queerness as wholly as you can before you fandomefy it pls. Homophobia is not just an angsty trope

Stories with happy endings < stories where it falls apart. Stories where love isn’t enough. Stories where there’s no malice just the slow melancholy of knowing it never would have worked and never will and yet your still in those moments all the time. Stories where no amount of loving will heal a weeping wound. Stories where the break and mutually agreed and mutual agony and despite being so close, failing anyone with no hope of reconnection. Just stories where things gently, lovingly fall apart.

It really frustrates me how the found family trope has affected fiction and fandom.
Because of experiences I’ve had, I’m no longer capable of feeling familial love. I have an uneasy relationship with familial affection and family as a concept. These experiences give me a different perspective on familial love then most people. I don’t understand why people insist on forcing it into character dynamics or in place of platonic feelings.
Platonic love and feelings often get erased by fandom’s obsession with romance, but something I’ve never seen anyone else talk about is how it doesn’t stop there. Every group of fictional friends is called a found family. If two people who are close interact with one another and aren’t shipped together then apparently they’re siblings now. If an adult cares for a child/ younger character or gives them advice or is close with them at all then they’re automatically “parental figures.” It’s always “you’re not my best friend, you’re family now.” I’m sick of it. Family isn’t all its cracked up to be. This insistence in both fanon and canon fiction that family is always good and should be held above all and and everyone needs a family whether biological or honorary is almost as annoying as the insistence that everyone needs romance.
Why can’t people be friends? I’d kill for a group of people to just be friends with and feel platonic love for because to me that’s better than any family I could have or find. It’s like people think there’s a hierarchy, that platonic feelings are meant to be temporary. That if people form a close enough bond they become “more” than friends and are either romantically involved or become family.
Platonic relationships and feelings are not lesser than romantic or familial ones. They are not less important, less genuine, less impactful, less personal, or anything else inferior to romance and family.
I’m tired of them being erased. I understand that the desire to push the narrative of characters being family often comes from the de-stigmatization of adoption and fostering, of doing away with the nuclear and “traditional” family structures. It comes from people embracing that family is not something you’re stuck with by chance, but can be something you choose. It comes from queer people pushed from their biological families and finding solace in a community or group of people who finally accept them and become a real family to them. And I’m not demeaning or trivializing any of that, I just think that they can and should co exist with with platonic relationships and the idea that family isn’t the end all be all of relationships.
I’m also aware that the association of close non-romantic relationships with family predates the found family trope and fandom, but I’ve noticed that it’s become more of a problem as the trope grew in popularity.
I used to be a big fan of the found family trope because I thought I could make up for my past experiences and feelings about family by seeing people having positive relationships with family and choosing the people they consider family to them. Turns out what I was looking for had nothing to do with family at all.

I really love courting fics.
Like old-fashioned, I’m-going-to-pick-flowers-for-you, getting-to-know-you-is-a-privilege, shy glances and dancing around miscommunication and yearning kind of courting fics.
It’s such a pure kind of love and slow-burn affection that grows as they get more determined to win the other over despite maybe not even knowing that much but something clicked.
And it happens over years??? Dedication.
They use the word “courting” in it? Beautiful.
It’s about immortals over centuries of wanting the other? Cherry on top.
It’s set far in the past or in an apocalyptic situation? Oh my god.
There’s committed friendships that give tips and advice or see them through the hardest of times? Just marry me at this point.
Courting is like the old-fashioned version of yearning in modern settings and I love it. But you have both a modern setting and characters that want to be old-fashioned and court each other anyway?? Now you’re just ahead of your time.

You know, I think part of the reason why I love the idiots to lovers trope so much is bc you can give ur oblivious ass characters a tremendously more happy ending
Like, you could have the two characters dance around each other. You can have them each silently pine alone. Then when they finally get together, it’s still very bittersweet bc of all the time they wasted. There’s always that lingering sadness about what could have been
Or you can have two buddies being pals. You can do the pining and believing that your friend doesn’t like you like that, that still has great potential for angst. Though if your characters are stupid, they can do all kinds of couple-y shit while convincing themselves that that’s just how their friend expresses platonic affection. Holding hands? Totally normal. Sleeping in the same bed? Just bestie things. Going on friend dates? Just girls being girls/ dudes being guys
So then when they finally do get together, there’s no agony to linger on. They can look back on all their ‘friendly’ behavior with the additional context that they were in love with each other the whole time. Then what was platonic is practically dating and they have this rich romantic history to look back on
