The Roma lads won again today which means they're going to the Europa League semifinals and also it's time for hugs. I'm sure he would rather have been on the field but at least Ndicka (in the knit hat in the right hand image, hugging his bff Aouar) got to watch his teammates win in person!
I swear I'll shut up about this eventually but probably not until mid-May, depending on how the semis go. I'll try to keep it to a dull roar if we go to the final again.

You know what? Acceptable. I usually like the middle evolution best in any case.
[ID: A pair of screengrabs from Tumblr, both headed "Check out these blogs". The first recommends Copperbadge as being "Like Jonphaedrus" and the second recommends Astolat as being "Like Copperbadge."]

If I think of this as jonphaedrus, copperbadge, and astolat being the three evolutions of a Pokémon, it's even funnier.

BABY they are BOTH on the agenda! The cheese conveyor belt restaurant is the furthest out I'm planning to travel from my home base in Edgefield; it's my dinner stop on day two, where I'm going shopping and seeing the replica Parthenon. I'm excited to see how it measures up to the cheese conveyor belt in London.
Biscuit Love (the downtown branch) is breakfast on Day Three, which is going to be Country Music Hall of Fame in the morning and various explorations in the afternoon culminating in a cocktail at the robot tiki bar.
I'm also seeing the Frist and touring a meadery, among other fun stuff. I am actually pretty excited, and rather pleased with myself -- transit and full-amenity lodgings for under $500 total is very reasonable, and most of the non-food stuff I'm doing is either free or cheap.
I frequently wake up in the night, usually around 1am, after which I'm awake for an hour or two before going back to bed until 4 or 5 am. (Supposedly this is a medieval custom called Second Sleep but I haven't fact checked that.) I usually don't post because usually I try not to get on my phone, but I got sucked in by Southwest advertising cheap flights while I was looking for some white noise audio to fall asleep to.
On the one hand, I'm so efficient that between midnight and two in the morning I booked a solo trip in June to Nashville, including lodging, a three day touring agenda, and hip restaurants to try.
On the other hand, I should probably not have access to travel planning tools at two in the morning.
Well, it's all refundable, so I guess if it's still a good idea in the Real Morning I won't regret it and if I do, all I've spent was time staring at a map of Nashville and planning my angle of attack.

I know that nobody is on this blog for the football news but:
It's been confirmed that Ndicka had a collapsed lung from being elbowed in the chest by an Udinese player; he'll be fine but he's out for a month or two, and I can only imagine the other player is a mixture of horrified and kind of proud. "I hit a man so hard his lung collapsed" is...not unimpressive.
The Friedkins (owners of AS Roma) have confirmed that de Rossi has been offered the position of head coach/manager permanently -- he was only supposed to be interim through the end of the season, but between Roma's recent spate of wins and his extremely level head during Ndicka's collapse, everyone's been asking if we can keep him and it turns out we can!
Now all we need is for the Chicago Fire to hire Mourinho as their head coach and I will be a happy man. (This will never happen. They can't afford him and Chicago wouldn't care anyway, but leave me my dreams.)

On Sunday, AS Roma had an away game against Udinese; I gave the game a miss because I had other stuff, but I thought I'd check the score after the game ended, only to find it was suspended in the 71st minute. One of the players, Evan Ndicka, had collapsed on the field while clutching his chest.
He's fine; he had to be taken to the hospital, but the injury appears to be from a collision with another player, not a cardiac event. It's always scary when a player falls like that regardless of the sport, but even the talking heads agree this was handled extremely well -- the fans fell silent so the EMTs could work, the coaches and captains agreed to suspend the game, and de Rossi, who is still very new to coaching at all let alone as head of a Serie A team, kept his wits about him, got the EMTs onto the field for Ndicka, and put his players first.
The most touching part of the whole narrative, however, isn't the good behavior of fans and staff or that the entire team all went to the hospital to see him -- it's that his inseparable best friend on the team, Houssem Aouar (on the left in the third picture), petitioned the hospital to be allowed to stay overnight with him. Request denied, but still a very sweet gesture.

The third image shows him in a black suit, entering a stadium before a game, sharing a friendly look with Houssem Aouar, midfielder for Roma.]

The cryptids love being brushed, and they've discovered that if they catch me at the sink in the morning, combing my hair, I'll give them a quick comb as well. For several months now I've emerged from the shower every day to two impatient cats yelling for their morning salon styling. I got them a smaller, finer-toothed comb than mine, and they know which one is theirs and get excited when I pick it up.
Polk has also been suffering from dry skin, so I bought a bottle of spray moisturizer for cats, and every morning I spray their comb with moisturizer and then give them a brushing. It does make their coats very soft and Polk is less itchy all the time. But what I've realized is that aside from the shower, combing my hair is really the only morning toilette I do. I don't use product, but my cats do.
Which means, functionally, that my cats now have a more extensive morning beauty routine than I do.
[ID: Two photos; the first shows Dearborn the tortie, lying on the sofa amid heaps of pillows, lit by the sun and looking a little wild. The second shows just the face of Polk the tabby as she crouches on the duvet, peering out from under a pair of grey striped pajamas she has nestled into. They both look like they have very soft, sleek fur, because they do.]

I mean, you can't say the review is inaccurate. I'd venture to assert that if you are really determined to buy Banana Republic clothing, a Banana Republic store is one of the better places to do that.

Cats are returning to windowsills and sunny spots on the furniture. Nature is healing.

Really interesting survey and some fun data visualization! I'm going to be mortified if I got some wrong....
graphs survey
Hey folks! I'm taking a class on data visualization/making graphs, and we're doing a survey on how people read those graphs and how best to convey info through them.
If you could spare 12 minutes (estimated; most people seem to take less than that) and take a look at these five graphs (one question per graph), that would be super helpful: Assessing the Perception of Different Designs of Data Visualization
Please only take this if you're over 18, and put Hannah (that's me!) as the name of the person who asked you to take this survey. If you're interested in reading the paper on this that I'm going to have to write in a few weeks, reach out and I can let you read it when I'm done!
