Living with Natasha and Maria was the most fun you had in a while. They made you food three times a day, always asked for your opinion on things, and always made sure you were okay. it was a completely different experience than you were used to, and it couldn't have been better.
Tonight Maria and Natasha scheduled a movie night, and to say you were excited was an understatement. The day before, Natasha had taken you to the store to pick out all sorts of snacks. Maria had made your favorite dinner and you were happy and content as you three watched the movie.
That was, until Natasha got a sudden call.
You paused the movie while she left the room to pick up the phone. You anxiously looked at the closed, knowing no normal person called at this time of night, so it must be your social worker.
Marie noticed your concerned gaze, deciding to distract you with the mission to help her make you three hot chocolates.
Soon enough, you were laughing in the kitchen, the amount of mini marshmallows in the hot beverage being absolutely unacceptable, all the while Maria just kept putting more in.
You helped Maria take the hot chocolates to the couches, putting them down on the coffee table. Just then Natasha walked in, a distressed look on her face. You looked at her, but kept your mouth shut. You didn't want to know what was wrong, especially if it meant leaving.
Her and Maria shared a knowing look, before Natasha sat down next to you and laid her hand on your knee, smiling warmly at you.
"Before I say anything, I just need you to know that you're not going anywhere. You are staying right here, with us. I promise,” Natasha said as Maria took a seat next to you as well.
"What's wrong?" you asked Natasha, and she hesitated a moment before responding.
"Alice called, and apparently, a foster parent you stayed with before has been arrested, and they want you to testify against him…” Natasha explained carefully, and you just sat there, avoiding your gaze back to the coffee table.
"Why was he arrested?” you asked when Natasha moved her hand to your back, rubbing soothingly with her thumb.
It was silent for a moment, before Natasha took a deep breath and spoke. “ He's been arrested for abuse and…” Natasha took another breath, finding herself incapable of just saying. “And sexual assault…” she said quietly, and you closed your eyes with a soft sigh.
You knew him, and of course you knew why he had been arrested. You just needed Natasha to say it. You needed to hear it.
"I'm done with movie night,” you said after a moment of silence, getting up and shrugging Natasha's hand off your back, making your way to your room without looking back.
Neither Natasha nor Marie tried to stop you, letting you walk to your room, knowing you needed the space.
You laid in your bed, your stuffed bunny clenched tightly to your chest as numb tears streamed down your face. You wanted to be alone, and yet, it was almost as if you wanted to be alone with Natasha and Maria. You'd never felt like this before. You've never craved the touch and attention of your foster parents before, so why was it suddenly so different this time?
It was like Natasha had heard your thoughts, because soon after, you heard a soft knock on the door.
You didn't say anything, feeling too numb to even acknowledge the fact someone just knocked, but it hadn't mattered as Natasha came in anyway, a mug of hot chocolate in her hand.
She didn't say anything as she walked towards you, sitting on the bed next to you and setting the mug down on your nightstand. You sat there in silence for a while, until a muffled sob could be heard from your mouth, and Natasha didn't hesitate to crawl up the bed, sitting against the headboard as she coddled you closely to her chest.
"It's okay. Everything is going to be okay,” she assured you as her hand gently stroked your back, her other hand on your head as she held you tightly.
You were so close to Natasha, you didn't think you had been so close to anyone else before. You didn't think anyone ever even gave you a hug like this. A hug with meaning. A hug filled with love and care. You cried for a while, and Natasha didn't say anything as she just held you.
After a while, your sobs had turned to sniffles, and you gently raised your head from Natasha's chest.
She wiped the strands of hair from your face, smiling gently as she cupped your cheeks.
"Everything is going to be okay,” she assured you again, and you could cry purely from the way that she said it. You didn't cry, instead just sitting up against the headboard next to her, you bunny still rightly in your embrace. Natasha had one arm over your shoulders, making you sit against her closely.
You didn't mind. You wanted to be as close to her as possible.
"Can I have my hot chocolate now?” you asked quietly while your head leaned on Natasha's shoulder. Natasha smiled and reached for the mug, handing it to you, watching as you drank happily.
"I don't want to testify,” you then said. Natasha hummed but didn't say anything, waiting for you to continue. “I don't wanna see him again…” you added softly, and Natasha grimaced slightly  at the idea of what he could have done to you.
"We'll think of something. We'll be here for you, I promise,” Natasha said as she gave you a kiss on your head.
You nodded as you finished your drink, handing Natasha the mug so she could put it back on your nightstand. After some more cuddles, you yawned slightly, and Natasha chuckled as she sat up straighter.
"You should get some sleep, you're exhausted,” she told you, and you nodded.
When Natasha went to get up, you hesitated for a moment, looking at your hands and picking at your skin.
"Can I stay with you tonight?” you asked quietly, almost embarrassed of the question.
Natasha smiled as she nodded, letting you stand up before she placed her hand on your back. "Of course you can.”
You went into your bathroom and quickly brushed your teeth, changing into some pajamas before walking back into your room. You grabbed your bunny and went to Natasha, who was waiting in the doorframe. She smiled as she led you to her room, opening it to reveal Maria already in the bed, a book in her hand.
The moment she saw you, she put her book down, opening her arms and inviting you to get in the bed.
"Come here sweet girl.” You quickly got in, crawling to Maria and letting yourself fall into her warm embrace. She smiled as she hugged you close, much like Natasha had done.
"I'll be right there,” Natasha said as she went into the bathroom, but you paid her little mind as you enjoyed Maria's warm hug.
Once Natasha was settled in the bed as well, you lay in between them, taking a deep breath before speaking. "Thank you,” you said quietly as you laid your head on Natasha's chest, falling asleep in no time.
"We love you, Malysh…” Natasha said as she kissed your forehead, her and Maria falling asleep as well.

Eyes Closed by Ed Sheeran
Tumblr media
Summary: Maria wasn't sure what to expect when she turned after being gone for 5 years. But she wasn't ready to learn that her wife is gone and her daughter is now 10 years old. But life goes on.
Warning: death of a major character (it's Natasha), grief, angst with a happy ending, Maria needs a hug, drinking, guilt, fluff
Word count: 4.0k
“Maria!” She heard her name called out and her body was moving before she realized what was happening. She was standing on the sidewalk, chest heaving and the sound of horns blaring.
“What the hell happened?” She asked Fury. There was a crowd forming around them. She hated the amount of eyes on her and the whispers. There were so many whispers.
‘Oh my god!’ ‘Are they back?’ ‘Can I borrow someone’s phone?’ ‘I can’t believe it!’ Before she could run up to a random citizen and demand what they were talking about, a portal opened and she shielded her eyes from the light.
“Maria Hill,” she didn’t know the man in front of her. “We need your help. The fat of the world depends on it.” Maria was not one to hesitate when the answer was to follow him, she never disobeyed a direct order. But she hesitated to join him. She needed to find her family.
“Hill,” she looked at Fury. “Go. I’ll find them.” Maria trusted that he would, she stood by his side enough times to believe him. With a nod, she stepped through the portal.
More portals opened around her as the rest of the Avengers appeared around her. She stood where the compound once stood facing an army. She took her gun from her belt. There were so many questions that raced through Maria’s head but two rang louder than the others - where was Natasha? Where were you?
*
Every time you tried to step forward your feet remained as if you were glued to the spot. It was over. You won. But at what cost? You stared at the scene in front of you as the ashes of the compound settled. Pepper knelt in front of Tony with Peter and Rhodey around her. You wanted to grab him by his chest, shake him, and scream, ‘Get up! Get up! I can’t lose you.’ But you remained standing where you stood until you heard someone call out your mama’s name. “Natasha! Natasha!” You spun around to see who was calling out of her. Of course, those who were blipped away wouldn’t know. Natasha was gone, sacrificed herself for a stupid orange rock to bring everyone back. To bring the woman who was standing in front of you back. You heard stories about her, scrolled through pictures on Natasha’s phone, and fought tooth and nail to preserve every memory you had of her. It was hard. She said your name so softly but it felt so loud to you.
“Mom,” you whispered back.
  *
Everyone was surprised when they found out Natasha and Maria were looking to expand their family and adopt. It wasn’t that they thought they’d be bad parents but one was an active Avenger and the other was the Deputy Director. It was dangerous and hard to start a family in their line of work but that didn’t deter them. However, adoptive agencies were a little reluctant to accept them. After months and months of declined applications, they were starting to lose hope. Until they found you.
In true Avengers-style, the couple found you while on a mission to raid a HYDRA base. It was an easy mission as those that were guarding the base didn’t put up much of a fight. They were clearing out the building when one of the agents called over the coms for assistance from any available female. Natasha and Maria were the closest. When they arrived, the male agent was standing guard by the door. Natasha entered the room while Maria was debriefed. The room was set up as a bedroom and the Black Widow was a little confused about what was wrong until she heard a sound, metal against metal. The sound came from underneath the bed. Natasha hesitated to pull her gun when she saw you, a child no more than 4. “Hi sweetheart,” Natasha smiled and knelt. She heard Maria walk behind her but she kept her eyes on you. Her hands were up to show you she had no weapons. “You're safe,” Natasha whispered. “We won’t hurt you.” You hugged your knees closer to your chest.
We can take that off of you,” Maria said, pointing to the metal chain around your ankle. Your eyes were wide and scared as they flickered from Maria and Natasha. Soon you crawled out from underneath the bed. The dress you wore came to your knees and it was caked in dirt. Carefully, Natasha moved closer to you and used a bobby pin to undo the metal chain. Once it was off, your legs couldn’t hold up your weight anymore and you fell into the Black Widow’s arms. She lifted you with ease, not liking how light you felt in your arms.
“You're safe,” Natasha whispered, looking at Maria who moved to stand next to her. The agent ran her hand over your hair and down your back. “You're safe.”
*
Maria held open the front door of the apartment you used to call home. It hadn’t been touched since Natasha brought you here before turning to the Avengers’ compound. There was a vague memory of the Black Widow resting you on the counter as she ran around the apartment to pack a bag. The pictures you drew were still on the fridge. Maria gently closed the door behind her. “We’ll have to go shopping for a new bed and clothes for you,” Maria said. “But we can do that tomorrow.” You nodded, picking up a framed photo that was left on the counter. It was of you, Maria, and Natasha when you were younger. The three of you were eating ice cream, with big smiles, and ice cream all over your face. Life seemed so simple back then. “Tonight you can sleep in our,” you looked at her. “My bed,” she corrected herself. “You can sleep in my bed and I’ll take the couch.”
“No,” you said, placing the photo face down on the counter. “I mean I can take the couch. I don’t mind.” Maria shook her head, walking over to you.
“It’s okay,” she forced a smile. “It’s only for one night.” She placed a hand on your shoulder and then on your cheek. Her touch felt foreign. “I can’t believe how big you’ve gotten.”
“5 years,” you whispered. “It’s been a while.” Maria nodded. You didn’t miss the way her eyes turned glossy with tears but quickly went away.
“Yeah it has but we’ll be okay,” you weren’t sure if you were okay. There was an ache growing in your chest. Each time you took a breath in it hurt. You wanted your mama back. “Why don’t you go get changed into something more comfortable and I’ll figure out dinner?” You nodded. “You still like cheese pizza.” A smile crept to your face.
“Yeah, I love it.” Natasha was surprised by how much pizza you could keep down. You turned around to walk toward the direction of your room but you stopped. Maria had a point all the clothes in there you outgrew and the clothes you had were destroyed when Thanos attacked the compound. You sighed and opened the door to Maria’s room.
The room, like the rest of the apartment, lay untouched for the past 5 years. You ran your hand over the made bed as you walked to the closet. It was like you were standing in a time capsule. In the closet, you picked out a shirt and a pair of sorts that you had to roll up to fit you. Instead of returning to the kitchen, you sat on the ground, back against the bed. With your knees bent, you rested your arms on them. You tried to keep the memory of her arms around you before she stepped onto the platform, or the last time she kissed your forehead, or the last time she told you she loved you.
“Why did you do it?” You asked about the empty room. “Why did you have to leave me?”
  *
Maria grabbed a beer from the fridge, ignoring the artwork that decorated it. She ignored the photo you flipped over and every other photo that decorated the space as she sat on the couch. 5 years. She and so many others were gone for 5 years. The last time she saw you you were 5. You were 5 and Maria left you with her mother to go help Fury when Thanos snapped his fingers and half of Earth’s population was Blipped away. Maria leaned back on the couch and stared up at the ceiling.
After Tony’s funeral, Maria found Clint at the property’s edge and made him tell her everything that she missed. His entire family got taken and he became the Ronin to deal with the loss. Then the time heist and the sacrifice needed for the stone. For 5 years, Natasha led the remaining Avengers to keep the world in order and raised you. When the time came, Natasha gave her life for her family to come back.
Maria should have been there to fight in Wakanda, to help raise you, and to remind Natasha every day that she loved her. Taking a sip of the beer, she looked around the apartment. It was her idea to get a place away from the Avengers so they could be a family and give you a normal childhood. Natasha fell in love with the place because of the open floor plan and the balcony that overlooked the city. The way her face lit up when Maria handed her the keys will live on in her memory forever. They danced in the kitchen with no music just the two of them. Maria closed her eyes, draping her arm over her face. Everywhere she looked she saw her. Her best friend. Her lover. Her wife. Natasha was gone. Life was so unfair but it must go on.
*
They said time would heal all wounds. That even the deepest feelings of sadness, disappointment, and anger would gradually go away as time passed. But you believed they couldn’t be more wrong. With each passing day, the ache grew and grew. All you wanted was to be wrapped in your mama’s arms to be safe and happy. If only you could press rewind and stop her from going with the others.
You knew that meant Maria and everyone else wouldn’t be back or worse Uncle Clint wouldn’t be with his family. That made you feel guilty. It wasn’t like you weren’t happy that Maria was back. You were but you wanted to keep her at arm's length away. Your heart couldn’t handle more loss. There were times Maria wasn’t sure how to act around you. She would forget that you weren’t 5 years old but you were a preteen that could do things for yourself. It was a delicate dance you were performing and you were just so tired.
 *
“She hates me, Clint,” Maria said, glancing in the direction of your room. You went to bed early, claiming you weren’t hungry. So Maria made a plate for you and put it in the fridge if you changed your mind. The archer chuckled. “I’m being serious. It’s like we are walking on eggshells around each other.” She took a bite of her dinner but it tasted bitter in her mouth. She forced herself to shallow and through the rest of the food away. She poured herself a shot instead. Clint sighed.
“She doesn’t hate you,” he said. “It’s gonna take time for you both to find a routine.” Maria sat down on the bar stool taking another shot. It was probably a bad idea but a few shots might help ease this pain. It had been 4 months since she turned and in those 4 months, the pain never got easier. “You have to remember that Nat was all she had for 5 years.”
“Yeah,” Maria took another shot. “I missed 5 years.”
“You're a good mom, Hill,” Clint said. “Nat wouldn’t shut up about it.” She could hear the smirk in his voice and it made her laugh. When was the last time she laughed? “I’m so sorry, Maria. If I stopped her or convinced her, your family would be whole.” She closed her eyes, feeling her throat burn as she tried to keep her tears away. One managed to escape and she allowed it to all down her cheek.
“Then your family would have a hole too,” it was almost comically at the situation she found herself in. The Bartons were her family. Laura and Clint saved her life countless times while on missions for SHIELD. “You know how stubborn Natasha...,” she paused. “Was.” She heard the hitch in Clint’s breathing. “She had a reason for everything.”
“That she did,” he sighed. “If you need anything you call me, okay? Day or night. You aren’t alone.”
“Same to you,” Another short was poured. “Give my love to Laura and the kids. We’ll come out to visit soon.” They said their goodbyes and hung up. The apartment was once again quiet as she downed the shot and walked over to her bedroom. Flickering on the light, the bed lay untouched. She couldn’t bring herself to sleep in it. There were too many memories locked away in these walls. She would come in here, change quickly, and leave just as fast. Tonight would be no different. She changed into one of Natasha’s sleeping shirts and a pair of shorts. Instead of leaving, her eyes glanced at a photo on her nightstand. It was of her and Natasha at one of Tony’s parties, the lights from the fireworks glowing on their face. She was pretty sure Pepper took the photo. “It’s been a while, my dear,” Maria whispered, tracing Natasha’s face with her fingers. “I’m still holding back these tears dealing with the cards life dealt,” she looked away from the picture and towards the bedroom door. “Delusion is here again and I think you’ll come home soon. I can’t help but miss you.” She placed the photo back in its spot and walked back into the living room.
She grabbed the bottle of vodka and sat back on the couch, taking a sip instead of pouring a shot. She felt so alone even though Clint said she wasn’t. She didn’t know how to be a mother to you or live her life without the woman she loved by her side. Finally, the dam broke and Maria allowed herself to cry.
*
You woke up, gasping for air. The blanket you used was drenched with sweat. It was the same nightmare that plagued your mind for months - Clint returned without Natasha, the compound exploded, and Thanos killed Tony, Maria, and everyone that you loved. It was torture. After a few deep breaths, your heart calmed down. You expected to be welcomed by the quiet apartment but you heard crying. On quiet feet, you slipped out of bed, out of your room, and passed the open door of Maria’s room. That was another surprise. For the past 4 months, the door was closed. In the living room, you saw Maria on the couch. Her hand over her mouth to muffle the sound of her tears. But you saw how much her body was shaking as each heart-wrenching sob tore through her. You’ve never seen her cry, not at the funeral or on nights when you got up to use the bathroom and she was still awake. Was she holding it in for your sake?
The floor creaked underneath you and Maria spun around to face you. She seemed startled by your sudden appearance. “Hi,” her voice shook as she forced a smile. “I’m sorry if I woke you.” She whipped away her tears. “Are you okay? Do you need something?” Wordlessly, you walked over to her and without hesitation, you hugged her. You felt her tense up but soon she wrapped her arms tightly around you.
“I miss her so much,” you cried against her, letting your tears fall. Almost every night you cried and muffled the sound with your pillow.
“So do I, sweet girl,” Maria whispered. She shifted you so you were sitting down next to her but her arms never left you. You felt her tears as she burrowed her face in your hair. You just didn’t lose your mom. Maria lost her best friend, her life partner. You were so selfish, lost in your pain and grief you never bothered to reach out to her.
“I’m sorry,” you said. “I’m - I’m so -so sorry,” Maria forced you to look at her but kept you within arms reach. “I’ve been a horrible daughter to you. I wasn’t the only one to lose her and you kept trying to connect with me and I kept pushing you away. I’m so sorry mom,” You fell into her arms again, and each sob you let out shook your body.
“Sweetheart,” Maria whispered, cradling your head and gently rocking you from side to side. “It’s okay. It’s okay. We’re okay, I promise.” She whispered gentle reassuring into your ear until your violent sobs turned into quiet hiccups but you refused to let go of her. Maria sensed your hesitation to let her go so she lifted you with ease and carried you to her room. She gently sat you on the bed. You let go of her. “I’ll be right back,” she said.
“Promise?” You questioned. She smiled and this time it wasn’t forced.
“I promise, carina (sweetheart), she kissed the top of your head and you watched her leave the room. For the past 4 months, you wanted to be alone. You pushed and pushed Maria away and enjoyed the silence of your room. Now you hated being alone. You picked at the skin around your thumb as you waited and only stopped when she returned, holding two water bottles and a cloth. She placed the water on the nightstand and sat in front of you. You crossed your legs to give her more space. With gentle hands, she used the cloth to wipe the tears off your face. The silence was comfortable unlike before when it was tense and awkward. Once she was done, she handed you the water. “You have nothing to apologize for, mjia,” she said when you were done drinking. “I get it. For 5 years, Natasha was,” You cringed at the past tense usage for your mama. “All you had. She was the one there.” You heard the guilt that laced each one of her words. It wasn’t her fault. It was Thanos. You took your hand in hers. “The last time I saw you you were a spunky pain in my ass 5 year old,” you giggled. “I’m surprised you remembered me.”
“Of course I remember you,” you said. “Mama would tell me stories about you and her during your SHIELD days. But I started to remember the moments that we shared. We colored and watched Scooby-Doo and ate cheese pizza until I got sick.” Maria laughed, whipping away a tear that fell. “I was just scared.” You admitted.
“Why?” You sighed, looking at things around the room. You looked at everything except the woman in front of you.
“I don’t want to lose you too,” you said. “I watched Uncle Clint return without Mama, Uncle Tony died from his injuries, and Uncle Steve went back in time to be with Peggy. Everything is changing, nothing is the same except the truth is everyone is gone.”
“And life goes on.” Finally, you looked at her. She was staring at your connected hands.
“Yeah, life goes on.” You whispered. “But you are here and I’m here, right? And you won’t leave.” It was an impossible request as you knew she was still an active agent and Avenger.
“I will always come back home to you,” she compromised. You nodded, rubbing your eyes with your free hand. Maria smiled. “Come on let’s get some sleep.” Without thinking, you pulled back the covers and got comfortable. You didn’t miss the way Maria rolled her eyes. When she turned off the overhead light, you turned on the night light. “Move over,” she said. “I forgot how much of a bed hog you are.” You laughed, moving over to make space, and turned off the light. For the first time in a long time, the darkness didn’t scare you.
“Goodnight Mom,” you said. “I love you.”
“I love you too sweetheart,” you smiled, turned your back to Maria, and closed your eyes. But you waited to fall asleep. Maria tossed and turned, sighing a few times soon she fell asleep. She had to be exhausted. Quietly, you sat up and stared at her. It took a moment for your eyes to adjust to the low light but you looked at your mom’s features. It was the most peaceful you’ve seen her. With a sigh, you fished a picture out of your pant pocket. The picture went everywhere with you, even in the dark you knew every detail of it. One night at the compound, you found a Polaroid camera and you figured it was Wanda’s. As Natasha was making dinner, you ran over to her and threw your arm over her shoulders to take the picture. It was blurry, and a little out of focus, and your mama had flour all over her from making pizza but it was perfect.
“Watch over us, okay?” You whispered to the picture. “And keep mom safe. Please. I love and miss you, Mama.” You kissed the photo and slipped it back into your pocket. You stayed awake, hands behind your head, and stared up at the dark ceiling. Everything reminded you of her and you felt a lump form in your throat. Over the past 5 years, the best memories you had with Natasha were late-night talks on the roof. She told you stories of the stars, about her past, and her hope for the future.
‘I think I want to move out of New York,’ she said one night. She was staring up at the stars like always while you sipped on hot chocolate.
‘Really?’ You questioned, setting the mug down and wrapping the blanket tighter around you. ‘And go where?’
‘Anywhere,’ she whispered. ‘When your mom and your aunt come back. I’m going to take all of us away from this. I’m done,’ she leaned back on her hands. ‘A nice house with a lot of land so we could get a dog or a cat.’ You always wanted a dog. ‘Kind of like what Clint did with his family. So we can be together, safe, and happy.’
‘Promise?’ You found yourself asking. Finally, she looked at you. Green eyes locked onto yours.
‘Yeah,’ she smiled. ‘I promise.’
You turned back on your side, tears running down your cheek. “Why did you break your promise?” You whispered, closing your eyes. You squeezed them so tight color danced behind your eyelids. Every tear you shed you tried to keep it down, not wanting to wake your mom. But you heard her shift in her sleep and pull you into her arms. Now your head rested on her chest while her hand drew circles on your back.
“I got you,” she mumbled, voice laced with sleep. “I promise. I got you.” Promise. A promise was a declaration or assurance that one would do a particular act or that a particular thing would happen. But what was a promise if you feared it would be broken?

You raced after your target as fast as your feet would carry you. The young girl reminded you of yourself when you’d first been brought to Hydra. She fought hard and was determined to get away from you, but it wasn’t long before you’d cornered her in an alleyway with a dead end.
Her cries for help made your ears ring, and you would have given anything for her to just shut up. You could feel guilt weighing heavily on your chest. It was crushing. You were about to confine this little girl to a life of misery, just like your own.
Your body felt like it was on fire, every instinct you had was telling you to turn around and leave her there, to let her go, but you didn’t. You couldn’t. You pointed your gun at her as you dialed a number on a burner phone, giving the person on the other end your location.
The poor girl cried with all her might, tears streaming down her face. You felt like you were going to be sick. You wished she’d been able to get away from you somehow.
She shrank back until she was against the fence behind her just when you felt a hand on your arm. You kept the gun pointed at her steadily as you took a quick glance over your shoulder.
“You’ve done it again, great work.”
You woke from your nap with a start when you heard a beeping sound. Your chest was heaving. You looked around to check your surroundings and your breath started to even out upon realizing you were safe on the living room couch and your moms were in the kitchen making dinner. The microwave had just gone off.
“Hey, sleepyhead,” Natasha came over when she saw that you’d sat up and were awake, running her fingers through your hair tenderly. “You knocked out at the end of the movie. How was your nap?”
“It was okay,” you nodded, avoiding her gaze. “I’m going to wash up before we eat.”
You needed to clear your head before you sat with them for dinner. There was no way they wouldn’t be able to tell something was up and the last thing you wanted to do was to put your problems on them.
Upon locking the door to the bathroom, your eyes began to tear up. You groaned quietly and pressed the heels of your hands to your shut eyes, willing yourself not to cry. You did your best to steady your breathing and stay quiet, but it wasn’t long before you were choking back sobs while sitting on the cold tile floor.
Your dreams were often plagued by the haunting memories of your past, being controlled by Hydra since your early childhood. You were horrified by what you were capable of. It pained you to think that you had subjected kids to being tormented and ruined their lives. They hadn’t done anything to deserve that. And it was often difficult to convince yourself that you deserved to live in the loving household that you now did, because how could you when many of the kids you’d been assigned to capture probably still worked for Hydra?
Your eyes shot open when you heard a quiet knock on the door. You bit down on one of your knuckles, trying to stifle the sob threatening to leave your throat.
“You alright, kiddo?” Maria’s voice sounded.
You didn’t say anything out of fear of embarrassing yourself, afraid of whatever noise would come out.
“Can I come in?”
She took the sound of the door unlocking as a ‘yes’ and opened it slowly, sitting down beside you.
“What’s wrong, hm?” she murmured, putting her strong arm around your shoulders.
You turned into her embrace, wrapping your arms around her waist as tightly as you could while your body racked with sobs.
Maria held you close and pressed a kiss to the top of your head, “I’m right here, sweetheart.”
Natasha’s footsteps went unheard but she made herself known when she put a gentle hand on your back, doing her best to help soothe you.
Your tears fell freely, but the presence of your mothers was beginning to make you feel better. You were getting ahold of your breathing, matching yours to Maria’s.
Once you were calmer, you moved yourself to sit up with your back to the wall and Natasha was now in front of you, tutting when she saw your tear-stained face and your nose red from crying, “What’s got you so upset, honey?” she asked as she leaned forward to wipe your tears away with her thumbs.
You took a couple of breaths before attempting to respond to her, and while you did so, you realized not many people would be able to understand your feelings the way she might.
“How did… how did you forgive yourself?” Your voice broke as you spoke, fresh tears beginning to fall. “After everything I’ve done,” you shook your head. “I don’t deserve - I can’t - I’m a monster -”
“No, hey,” Natasha took your hand in hers before speaking softly, “You’re working yourself up again. Please don’t talk like that.”
You put your head down and pinched the bridge of your nose as Natasha sat in shock for a couple of seconds, surprised by your question.
It wasn’t often that the Black Widow cried, but as she saw you in your distress, reminding her so much of herself, she couldn’t help it when her eyes started watering.
She looked to her wife for a moment, and when their eyes met, it was clear they were thinking the same thing. Maria could not count the number of times she’d heard Natasha describe herself as a monster.
There were many nights Maria had held Natasha as she cried, feeling like she could never make up for everything she had done. She still felt that way sometimes. Like nothing could be enough for all the lives she’d taken or destroyed.
But you? You might be enough. Natasha felt more sure of that every day. The love she had for you consumed her. It came with an innate need to protect you. Getting to love you felt like healing from her past, something she once never thought she’d feel.
You had a long emotional journey ahead of you in order to come to terms with the reality, which was that you were a victim of circumstance, just like Natasha was. Neither of you asked for the hand of cards you were dealt, but you had to play them.
“Why don’t we go to the couch and talk about this there? Let’s get you off the floor,” the redhead suggested, helping you up.
As you made your way to the couch with Natasha, Maria went to the fridge and brought you water, which you took gratefully.
You sat between your mothers, busying yourself by fidgeting with the edges of the blanket, not feeling too inclined to look at them while you felt so vulnerable, preparing yourself to start speaking. “I have a lot of dreams about my time being controlled by Hydra, some can be really bad.”
Your mind raced as you mulled over how much you were going to tell them. You hadn’t spoken very much about what happened to you while you were being controlled by Hydra. You figured they knew enough from reading your file and Natasha being there when you were taken into custody by SHIELD.
Still, there was a lot you didn’t want them to know. You were ashamed of yourself and terrified that they may not look at you the same way after they knew what you’d decided to tell them.
“I was mostly assigned to kidnappings for Hydra,” A lump grew in your throat as you spoke. “I was having a nightmare about this one girl named Marcy, she was the youngest target I ever had. She was also the last.” You could feel the anxiety you were having in every part of your body. You weren’t sure what you expected them to say but the longer they said nothing the more anxious you became.
“You aren’t going to start forgiving yourself until you’re able to acknowledge that what happened was not all your fault,” Natasha finally said, which made your brow furrow.
When you didn’t say anything, she continued, “You know you didn’t do any of the things you did because of your own volition. Hydra was using a formula very similar to the one the Red Room utilized. You weren’t able to make any decisions yourself. Until you’re able to let up on yourself and come to accept this, you won't be forgiving yourself anytime soon.”
You stayed silent for a couple of seconds before nodding, “I’ve never not blamed myself.”
Natasha offered a soft smile, “I know how that feels. It took me a very long time to get to where I am now. And a lot of help from Maria.”
“And you have both of us every step of the way,” Maria chimed in.
Your eyes watered as the corners of your lips turned up, “Thank you. I love you guys so much.”
Natasha pulled you in for a hug and it seemed like she needed it almost as much as you did, “We love you too. More than you know.”
When you pulled away you turned and hugged Maria, “Thanks for finding me.”
The brunette shrugged with a soft smile, “Of course. But next time why don’t you let us know when something’s bothering you? You scared us there.”
“I’ll try my best. I’m still getting used to the whole asking for help thing. I’m sorry.”
“Ehh, that’s alright. We both know what it’s like to be a little emotionally stunted,” Maria snickered.
Natasha rolled her eyes and playfully kicked Maria’s shin, pretending to be annoyed by her comment as you laughed.
Everything was going to be okay.

It’s been two weeks since Natasha and Maria caught Y/N sneaking back to her room after a vigilante mission she had with her girlfriend Kate. Which means it’s also been two weeks since Y/N has seen Kate, as her mothers thought grounding her was needed. It probably was, but she can still be annoyed about it.
Y/N is sitting on her bed, reading Jane Eyre with music playing from her phone. Her moms are downstairs cooking dinner for the three of them. A sudden clattering sound makes Y/N moves her attention away from the book. She looks around her room, but notices nothing moving or changing, so she turns back to her book.
The clatter can be heard again.
This time Y/N slams her book down to her bed, though not before putting a bookmark to the page she was in. She stands up and walks around her room, looking around for anything out of order. Just as her gaze goes over to the window, a small rock hits it, making a clattering sound.
With a frown, she looks out from the closed window. “Kate?” She mumbles, unlocking the window quickly. “What are you doing here?” Y/N whisper shouts, her head leaning out the window.
“I’m here to save my princess! Have you seen her? Her mothers locked her into a tower.” Kate giggles, her hands over her mouth in a cup like way to make sure Y/N can hear her.
Y/N scoffs with a grin, “come inside, idiot.” She glances between Kate climbing up the fore ladder and her closed door, desperately hoping her mothers haven’t heard the commotion. “You know I’m grounded, right?” She mumbles when Kate is finally inside.
“Yeah,” she kisses her before closing the window, “but I really missed you.” Kate goes to sit down on Y/N’s bed while looking at her room. She hasn’t actually been there before, as they tried to keep their relationship secret from Y/N’s moms.
She tries to act annoyed that Kate is endangering both of their wellbeing by sneaking into her room while her moms are home, but she can’t help but be happy her girlfriend is here. “I missed you too.”
Kate smiles, waving her fingers in a come here motion. As Y/N steps closer to her, she pulls her to her lap, wrapping her arms around the lower part of her waist. “How long are you still grounded for?” She speaks quietly, knowing her parents have an extra good hearing.
“Like another week, I think.” Y/N rolls her eyes, thinking her moms went overboard with the amount of grounding. “I’m also apparently never ever allowed to leave the house with you alone. So, you’re going to have to get used to hanging out here.”
Kate giggles, “I’ll live with that.” She tilts her head, suddenly dropping her smile. “Except I have to meet your parents before that, don’t I?” She frowns, her body tensing up at the thought of officially Maria and Natasha.
“You do.” Y/N hums, her hand going up to play with Kate’s hair.
“What if they won’t like me?”
Biting the inside of her cheek, she twirls a strand of hair around her finger. “They’ll like you..eventually.”
“What does that mean?”
“They’re just a but apprehensive of you after the whole vigilante thing.”
Kate groans, her forehead thudding against Y/N’s shoulder. “They hate me. I haven’t met them yet and they already hate me.”
“They don’t hate you,” Y/N cradles Kate’s head, “they just don’t like that we’ve been sneaking out to fight people.”
“Well,” she sighs, “I guess that makes sense.”
“You think?”
Kate gives Y/N’s shoulders a couple of light bites when she laughs. They start giggling together and fall down to the bed, Y/N on top of Kate.
During their giggling, that has gotten a bit too loud, they fail to notice the footsteps coming towards the room. “Y/N, the dinner i-“ Natasha stops talking as she notices her daughter isn’t alone.
“Mom!” Y/N jumps up, falling off of the bed in the process. Kate scrambles up from the bed, her eyes comically wide as she stares at Natasha staring at the two with a scarily calm expression. Y/N stands up, the three of them stand there in silence. “This is Kate.” She mumbles
“Maria!” Natasha shouts. “Come up here.” Her hands are crossed over her chest as she leans against the doorway.
Maria comes up, “what’s up?” She frowns, looking at Natasha with a questioning look, until she walks into the room. “Oh.”
“This is Kate, Y/N’s girlfriend and vigilante partner.” Natasha state.
“Is it now?” Maria takes a stance similar to Natasha, scaring both of the girls.
Clearing her throat, Kate offers her hand, but she doesn’t take any steps closer, so she is too far away to actually shake their hands. “I’m Kate. Bishop. Kate Bishop. Girlfriend. It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Romanoff and Mrs. Hill.” She has a toothy smile, way too large to be genuine, though it falls when she realizes she’s still holding her hand up.
Natasha raises her brows at her rambling. “We know who you are, what we don’t know, is why you’re here while Y/N is grounded.”
“We-“
“Downstairs,” Maria interrupts Y/N from saying anything, “both of you.”
The four of them sit around the kitchen table, Kate and Y/N on one side, Natasha and Maria on the other. Kate is sitting unnaturally straight, hoping to show the two women that she is good enough for their daughter.
“So,” Natasha starts, “you two have been dating for a while.”
“And fighting crime.” Maria adds, making the couple shrink in their seats.
“Yeah.” Y/N mumbles. She’s holding onto Kate’s hand tightly, both of them clammy.
“That was totally my fault! Kate suddenly shouts out, raising her hands, which ends up her banging her knuckles to the edge of the table, “shit, no, no, I don’t normally curse.” Her eyes are wide as she once again goes on a tangent. “I just mean, that, it was my plan to start fighting.”
Frowning, Y/N stops her girlfriend from talking, “no, it was both of our plan. You aren’t taking the blame for this.” She looks at her, her brows scrunched together.
“I don’t want your moms to be mad at you.” Kate whispers, though it’s loud enough for everyone to hear.
“Well, I don’t want them to be mad at you either.” Y/N whisper shouts back.
Natasha and Maria glance at each other, deciding for put an end to this before it goes on for too long, “we aren’t mad at anyone, so please, calm down you two. We just want to talk, set up some ground rules.”
“Like no fighting crime.” They calm down, Y/N more than Kate, as the latter is still incredibly nervous to be in front of the two women. “And no more sneaking in either.” Maria raises her brows as she turns to look at Kate.
“Sorry.” She mumbles, blushing under her gaze.
Natasha leans her elbows against the table. “We’ve been talking with Clint,” Kate perks up at the name of her mentor, “and if you two promise to follow the rules, we’ll start properly training you.”
“Really?” Y/N gasps.
“Yes, but,” Maria continues before the two can get too excited about it, “that means you two will not go out without one of us, the bedroom door stays open, and you’re still grounded.” She looks at Y/N.
“Uhuh, understood, we’ll follow every rule!”
“Every rule!” Kate echoes, quickly nodding, trying to hide her grin.
Maria chuckles while Natasha rolls her eyes with a grin on her face. “Alright.” Natasha stands up. “Go on then, go to Y/N’s room, keep the door open.”
With a giggle, Y/N stands up, takes hold of Kate’s hand, and starts pulling her towards her bedroom. They hug each other tightly once they’re inside, with the door open, and celebrate the potential of becoming real Avengers.
They jump onto the bed. “That didn’t go as badly as I thought.” Y/N smiles, leaning her head on Kate’s shoulder.
“It went well!” Kate wraps her arms around Y/N, pulling her on top with a laugh. “I love your moms.”
Y/N slaps her arm, “don’t love them more than me.” She grins.
“Never.” She kisses her, though it’s messy from all of their giggling.

Pairings: BlackHill, Natasha Romanoff x Lev Ilyin (Original!Evil!Character) (Past mention)
Natasha and Maria were quietly sitting on the couch in their living room, snuggled closer to each other as their 8-year-old daughter, Y/N, was sandwiched in between the two women.
'Lilo and Stitch', Y/N's favorite movie was playing on the TV and their little girl was absolutely fascinated about everything that was happening in it as if she wasn't seeing this movie for the millionth time.
Natasha had to buy 40 new DVDs with the movie, in the last 7 years since its release, because Y/N watched them so often that they quickly got scratched and, therefore, almost useless.
Natasha could only blame her wife for introducing their daughter to this movie.
Now, truth be told, Maria wasn't actually the other biological parent of Y/N.
Years ago, when Natasha was still a young mere prisoner of her own life, she was forced by the organization that had taken care of her training to have intimate relationships with a man she didn't even know.
More of like, being offered against her own will by the Red Room to one of their men but that is all in the past.
She was ready to keep living with everything that happened to her as long as the only good thing that came out of everything, her daughter, was by her side.
A knock at the front door interrupted Y/N's innocent giggles and the little family looked confused towards the door.
Who could be at the door at this late hour?
"I'm coming!" Maria shouted, carefully moving Y/N's sleepy body, who was using Maria as a pillow, away
"I'll get it." Natasha quickly placed her hand on Maria's arm, stopping her
Maria looked at Natasha for a second and the agent wanted to protest but the reassuring smile the redhead was wearing was too tempting.
"As you wish, my love." Maria smiled back
"I'll be quick." Natasha quickly peaked her wife's lips, then stood up, making her way towards the front door
Natasha opened the front door, unaware of the darkness that was lurking just on the other side of it.
A sickening smirk formed on the face of the man who was standing just in front of the red-headed woman.
"Hello, Natalia." He said "Long time no see. Did you miss me?"
Natasha froze in place for a moment as she took in the sight of the man she never thought she would see again.
Memories of a long-forgotten time had resurfaced in her mind.
She shook her head "No..." Natasha whispered "What are you doing here?"
"Well, you know..." The man began "I came to take back what's mine."
Natasha looked at the man, her eyes widening in shock.
"You are not going to take my daughter away from me!" She protectively declared
"Our daughter, my darling." The man corrected her "Oh, and what makes you think that I'm here just for our daughter?" He chuckled "I am here for you as well, Natalia. You are mine just as much as our daughter is." He stated as a matter of factly "How is she, by the way?"
The man took a step forward, walking uninvited inside Natasha's home, and looked around.
"I bet she grew up a lot in the time I haven't seen her." He added when Natasha hesitated to answer his question
"Leave her alone, Lev." Natasha raised her voice "She's innocent. She doesn't have anything to do with all this madness. I thought you were busy planning the world's dominance. How come you have come for us after all this time? How come that HYDRA let you leave their safe prison."
"How?" Lev chuckled "I was never a prisoner at HYDRA, to begin with, unlike you. I am one of their highest-ranked agents. Why do you think they offered you to me out of all people?" He explained "Now I am here to claim what's mine. And this time, neither you nor our little girl will run away. I will find you anywhere."
Anger raised inside of Natasha just as much as fear built inside her.
She couldn't believe her eyes. She couldn't believe that after all this time, the man who hurt her and took advantage of her body was here to claim something he never took part in.
More specifically, in the raising of Y/N, which he had no right over.
"Just leave us alone." Natasha shouted
"You wish!" Lev laughed sadistically
From inside the living room, Maria's ears picked up on the raising tone of her wife's voice, and her instincts kicked in, telling her to go and check what was happening.
"Stay here, baby." Maria kissed your head "Mom is gonna go and quickly check if Mama is okay out there and see who is at the door."
"Okay, Mom." You replied distracted as your attention was fully focused on the movie
Maria stood up and with one last ruffle of your hair, she made her way towards the front door.
"Honey?" Maria called Natasha confused, as she took in the sight of the unknown man sitting in front of her wife "Are you okay? Who's is he?" She pointed to the man "Were you expecting someone?"
"So this is that so-called wife of yours I've heard about." The man smiled "Well it's nice to meet my replacement but we have to leave, Natalia."
Maria looked confused between Natasha and the man for a second.
"What do you mean you have to leave?" Maria asked "Babe?" She turned her head towards Natasha, waiting for her answer
Natasha looked up from the floor, directly into Maria's eyes and the brunette could see the tears that were present in her wife's eyes, causing Maria's instincts to heighten immediately as a surge of protectiveness overflowed her senses.
When Natasha begged Maria to help her just with one look, Maria pushed Natasha behind her with a swift move.
"I don't know who you are." Maria said, her muscles tensing "But I'll have to ask you to leave. Nicely." Se ordered the man through gritted teeth
"You have no right to tell me to leave." The man laughed "I am here to claim what's mine and you, weak woman, will never be able to make me leave."
Just then, Maria's brain clicked on what was happening and she understood who the man that was standing in front of her was.
"You monster." Maria whispered angrily "I know exactly who you are."
"Well..." The man raised his arms, proud of who he was "It took you some time to figure that out." He sang "I expected you to be smarter than this."
"This is the last time I am asking you nicely to leave this house. That unless you want to have some serious problems." Maria said once again
"Oh, come on." The man chuckled sarcastically "You don't expect me to be afraid of a woman and especially of you, don't you?"
"Well, I wouldn't say the same thing if I were you." Maria tilted her head "I am ready to do anything to protect my family."
"Your family?!" The man shouted "They're mine! I am going to take my belongings and leave."
"They are staying here." Maria protested "You don't even know how my daughter is named, let alone have any right over her. I raised her ever since she was a five-month-old baby. I was the one who changed her diapers, checked for any monsters under her bed, and loved her, not you." She hissed "And the same goes for my wife. She's mine for a reason."
From the corner of her eye, Maria saw some movement right behind her, and she saw the man's smirk growing wider.
"Aha, my sweet girl!" The man cheerfully exclaimed "I finally came home. Are you excited to see me?"
Y/N silently peeked at the man from behind her moms.
"Mama?" You called shyly "Who's that?" You pointed towards the man
"No one, baby." Natasha quickly tried to make you leave "Just go back to the movie, okay? Me and Mom will be there very soon."
"Mom?" Lev raised his eyebrow "There is no such thing as another mom. I am your other parent, sweetheart." The man tried to tempt you in a sweet tone "I came here so you could have a normal family. I am your Dad." He declared
"Dad?" You asked confused, looking up towards Natasha "I have no dad. I have Mama and Mom. I already have two parents."
"Well, your parents must be a mom and a dad, not two moms." Lev tried to turn you against your mothers
"But, I love my moms." You innocently declared "They love me and we're always having fun. And Mom always carries me on her shoulders and buys me ice cream, while Mama reads me bedtime stories and gives me the best hugs in the world."
But just before you got to finish your sentence, the man snatched you away by your arm and forcefully held you in place.
You let out a terrified scream as tears quickly made their way down your cheeks.
"Mama!" You screamed out in fear, begging Natasha to help you
"Leave her alone!" Natasha screamed as she tried to grab you back from the men, but she didn't manage to "My baby!"
"Leave my child alone!" Maria threatened "That's my daughter you're holding there. You just don't get it."
"These two girls are mine! And she's coming with me." He pointed towards you
"She's mine!" Maria shouted as she grabbed your other arm quickly and pulled you towards her with all her force, causing the man to loosen his grip on you "They are both mine!" Maria declared as she quickly shoved you behind her to shield you from anything, just as she has done with Natasha "I don't know what's the reason behind your actions and what your evil plan is, but you must leave right now!"
Lev, in a fraction of a second, lifted his arm and punched Maria in the face.
Natasha let out a horrified gasp, her hands instinctively flying to her mouth to cover it in order to muffle any sound.
"Mom!" You screamed, afraid that your mom was badly hurt
"It's okay, kid. Mom is okay." Maria reassured you as she looked towards the man "So, you want to fight?" She nodded, taking a deep breath "Alright then, that's what you'll get."
And just like that, Maria delivered a punch back towards the man and a fight started.
Natasha wanted to help her wife, but she also knew that you needed protection and reassurance as she took two steps backward, shielding you with her body.
Kicks and punches were thrown around from both sides and just as the fight was getting more violent, a blowing sound was heard and the door of their house was slammed open.
"S.H.I.E.L.D., get down!" A deep voice shouted as agents armed with weapons burst inside their home
"This won't end like this!" Lev shouted as he tried to fight his restraints, just as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s agents escorted him away
"We'll see about that, Lev Ilyin!" Maria shouted behind him before she quickly turned her attention back to her wife and daughter "You're okay." She said in a rushed but reassuring voice "Everything is okay now, my sweethearts." The brunette woman pulled you and your mama in her arms "No one's ever gonna be able to take you away from me, I'm here and I will always protect you, you both are mine and no one else's."
Your small whimpers broke both Maria and Natasha's hearts.
Natasha held you tightly in her arms "It's okay, baby, it's okay. You're okay." Natasha kissed the top of your head and you hid your face in her stomach
Your cries slowly turned into quiet sniffs as you basked in the protection you felt from both your mothers as Maria protectively held you and Natasha closer to her.
"You're both okay." Maria whispered "We're all okay."
Natasha raised her head and looked at her wife's face, a gasp escaping the redhead's lips.
"Masha, you're hurt!" Natasha worriedly looked at Maria's bruised face and raised her hand to touch her wife's cheek
Maria tenderly grabbed Natasha's hand, stopping her from touching her cheek.
"It's okay, my love." Maria reassured "It's nothing. I just need a little bit of care from you and our little princess and I'll be all healed in no time."
"I'm sorry." Natasha whispered on the verge of crying "I never expected to see him again."
"None of that!" Maria sternly declared "You have no fault in this. Okay?"
"But Maria..." Natasha began before sighing when she saw the look on Maria's face and the spy changed the subject "How did the agents show up just on time?"
"Well, I kind of activated the alarm I have on my bracelet and they were alerted when I realized who Lev was." Maria shrugged her shoulders as if it wasn't such a big deal
"You sneaky agent." Natasha chuckled, a gleam of proudness shining in her eyes
"Well, what can I say?" Maria tried to sniffle her laughter "I am prepared for any situation."
But just as they hugged again, the sweet moment of the small family of three was interrupted by Nick Fury, who walked inside the room holding a file in his hand.
"Agent Hill. Agent Romanoff." He nodded, greeting the women "I want to thank you for catching one of the most wanted criminals on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s list.
"Well, you know..." Maria turned annoyed towards Fury, angry that he disturbed their moment "He kind of messed up with my family. I had to do something about it."
"As a thanks, I have a very special mission for you both." Fury stated "I need your help and you have just proven to me that you're both fit for this mission."
Natasha sighed, rolling her eyes "I knew there was something about you showing up here, Nick, not just because of Lev Ilyin."
"You know me, Agent Romanoff." He stated unimpressed, extending his hand towards them, offering them the file "Ilyin is just another trophy to our collection."
The couple grabbed the file from his hand and Natasha opened it, looking at the name of their next target that was written on the first page with big, bold letters.
"Tony Stark?" Maria asked confused "Isn't he that annoying, reckless man who thinks he's smart just because he has money and who wears sunglasses at parties that take place at night?"
"You couldn't have described Stark better, Agent Hill." Fury nodded "That's why I need Agent Romanoff to infiltrate inside his company. You have all the information there. You're getting a new alias and your mission is to protect him as danger is too close to him right now. We need to take action or the next events will have a turn for the worst if we don't intervene in this." He explained before adding "For the whole globe, not just for Stark."
"Consider it done." Natasha nodded, accepting the mission
"I promise you both, you won't regret helping with this mission." Fury looked in between the two women
"We hope we won't, Sir." Maria squinted her eyes
And just like that, Fury turned around and left without adding any other word.
Maria peeked at the page where all the details about Natasha's new identity were and quickly scanned the page with her eyes, reading the important details.
"Well, I see he didn't think too much about a new name." Maria said teasingly "Come on! Natalie Rushman? He could do better than that. And you were supposed to be a model?" She chuckled "No way!"
"Oh, shut up." Natasha playfully smacked Maria's arm "Let's just leave the mission for another time, okay? I have enough time later to study this role."
"All right, Miss Rushman." Maria laughed, wrapping her arms around Natasha's shoulders while taking a gentle hold of Y/N's small hand "I think we had a movie to watch."
"Stitch!" You cheered excitedly
"Yeah, baby, Stitch!" Natasha lovingly smiled down at you as you all made your way back to the living room
That night, Maria lay awake in the bed she and her wife shared.
Natasha and their daughter were sound asleep as today's events drained them out of energy.
The brunette agent turned on her side with a sigh and scanned the faces of her two loves in the darkness.
"No one will ever be able to take you away from me." Maria whispered "I promise you both that we will forever be a family regardless of our past or of what other people might think about us."
Maria slowly leaned closer and kissed your cheek.
"You're so loved, Y/N." The brunette whispered in your ear "And so are you, Tasha." She also pressed a gentle kiss against Natasha's cheek "You're my blessings and I'm the luckiest woman in the world to have you both."
What happened today, helped not only Natasha and Maria, but also you, to realize how lucky you were to have each other and on how much love your small family was actually built on.
Maria vowed to fight until her last breath, just so she could keep you and Natasha safe, as her love for her girls knew no bounds.
And just as Stitch has said.
'Ohana means family. Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.'
And a true family is built on love, not blood.

The door to the trailer creaked louder than ever. Why was it always when someone is trying to be quiet things make the most noise. Natasha pulled the heavy door to a close with one hand, the other carrying a large plastic bag of supplies. The redhead heard small shuffles from your shared bedroom and paused her movements, you must have settled again immediately as Nat didn’t hear anything else throughout the cold trailer. Norway was always cold but especially in late autumn, the widow would have to find another safe house to take you too, it was relatively safe here but the winter was fast approaching and Natasha wasn’t going to let you, her daughter, go cold all season.
A while later you stirred again, rolling over to mamas side of the bed. The mattress was cold beneath the sheets, it told you that Natasha wasn’t there. “Mommy” you quietly called out, eyes still shut and your grip tight on the purple baby blanket. Oh how you missed Jimmy, your beloved stuff bear, there just wasn’t any time to grab him before you left. you peeled your eyes open to the dimly lit room “Mamma” you called louder. The doors angle increased and your favourite person appeared “hey there beautiful, did you have a good sleep?” Natasha asked. You hummed and opened your arms wide for a cuddle. Mommy came and scooped you up tightly “happy birthday baby” she said as she tickled your belly. Today you were 7 years old, you felt so grown up, but this birthday was defiantly going to be different. “Thank you mommy” you said as you slid down her slender frame “can I have the chocolate cereal today? As I’m 7 now!” You begged at your mamas hip bone. Natasha had promised that as you were away from home this year you could have a special cereal as a birthday treat, she never let you have anything chocolaty before midday! It was the best she could offer until she laid sleepless last night with a new idea.
“I told you not to knock!” Natasha said as she opened the trailer door “sorry” Mason whispered “I forgot” Natasha stepped out of the door, making sure each lock was secure “ok, just sit here and don’t go inside, y/n’s a heavy sleeper so she shouldn’t wake up” the fugitive explained “I’ll be as quick as I can, there’s a 24 hour store about 20 minutes away so I’ll be like an hour tops” “ok all clear, I’ll be here”
“Actually sweetheart, I have a little surprise for you” your mama said. You eyes and ears perched up “really? What is it mama!” You exclaimed “come with me baby” Natasha said as she took hold of your small hand, wrapping her fingers around your knuckles. Mommy lead you into the main section of the trailer and you let out a loud yelp when you saw the array of pink and purple balloons gently rolling around the room in the dull wind. You looked up at the walls to find a huge banner displaying a sparkly ‘happy birthday’. You were truly amazed, when had your mama had time to do all this? “What do you think y/n?” Nat said “I love it! Thank you so much mommy!” You beamed. “You are very welcome darling” Natasha said as she hoisted you up onto her hip “but guess what?” You perched up immediately “wha mama!” You asked “there’s one more surprise, over by the fridge” your mommy said as she carried you towards the old grayed out refrigerator.
“Cake cake cake!” You exclaimed upon seeing the bright pink sparkly birthday cake, topped with sprinkles and a wonky 7. “I know this birthday is a bit different, but my baby girl always has a birthday cake, no matter what” Nat would move heaven and earth for you. “Wait mama look!” You said as you little feet pattered on the floor after escaping Natasha’s grip “a stuffy bear!” Just left of the cake was a light brown bear, tag still connected to its ear. “So there is!” Mama said, pretending she had no idea where he had come from “someone special must’ve left him for you” she didn’t like to lie, but Natasha just wanted you to have a little magic in your life “maybe uncle Clint?” You questioned “maybe, what are you going to name him?” You hummed for a moment “Peter! Because Peter is my favourite and I miss him” you said, a hint of sadness in your tone, Nat frowned. “That’s a perfect name”
“Who’s that?” You said after hearing three consecutive knocks on the door, Masons secret code to let Natasha know there was no danger. “Well if we’re going to have a party then we need guests” Your mama said as she opened the door to the strange man you’d never seen before “hello there y/n” he said, a little box in his right hand “is that a present?” You said, giving him mommy’s signature smirk “yes it is” Mason said, standing awkwardly at the door frame, his hand way too close to your mom “hey!” You said, alerting the two adults “are you mommy’s boyfriend?” You innocently asked, the pair stood in a slight uncomfortable silence, soon breaking into laughter “no, he’s not y/n” Natasha said as she came to scoop you up once again “then why is he looking at you the same way Maria does? Does he kiss you too?” Natasha couldn’t help but giggle, slightly sad because she was missing her ‘almost’ girlfriend. “Yep, she’s defiantly your daughter” Mason said, Natasha shot him daggers “is it cake time yet?” You said with a huff and a pout “yes baby, it’s cake time”

Project Crimson
Alexandra Hill being absolutely Natasha Romanoff's daughter, extracted from my fic:
Aleksandra hesitated for a moment before admitting, but Maria was nice, it wouldn't kill her to share more, "I met someone in the cafeteria. Peter. He talks a lot."
This question had haunted her since the moment Maria saved her, she had been holding it in for 67, she counted. "Why are your eyes so blue?"
Alex's gaze remained fixed on Fury, an air of defiance around her. Fury watched her carefully, his eye narrowing as she threatened, "One more word, and this sandwich is flying at your face."
Alex's expression shifted from groggy confusion to relief upon seeing Maria awake, she quickly walked over to her. "You're finally up. You know, that would have been a really dumb way to die."
"You are going to be the one getting stitches if you try to take one more fry."
Alex hesitated for a moment before speaking, her voice shaky. "I don't know what's happening, and I think I'm dying." (bro was just getting her period)
Peter and Maria were die-hard baseball fans, Alex only knew you had to hit the ball.
Alex buried her face in Maria's shoulder, tears streaming down her cheeks as she clung to her like a life depended on it. "But...I'm not your real daughter, you could have a real daughter," she choked out, her voice muffled by Maria's embrace.
Alex smirked proudly. "Yeah, I guess I am pretty awesome."
Alex giggled softly, her eyes bright with amusement as she leaned back against the pillows. "Because women are hot," she replied, her words slurring slightly from the effects of the painkiller.

Natasha Romanoff × Maria Hill
Y/N Your Name
You were walking out of the school, looking over the parked cars to see if your mom was there to pick you up.
Since the whole alien invasion last year she was quite busy and didn't always have time to pick you up, so sometimes Maria came or you took the bus home. She had gotten you a cellphone to use in case of emergency when you were home alone.
Looking around you didn't see your mom or her car, so you started walking towards the bus. Taking the bus was something you really disliked. The other kids were always loud and none of your friends rode the same bus you did, so you always ended up sitting next to kids you didn't know.
When the bus started driving you checked your phone for a message from your mom, only to see that she hadn't texted you, but Maria had.
'Hey sweetie. Your mom had to leave for a quick mission, she should be home soon, but she asked me if I could stay with you till she's back. So I'll be over as soon as I'm finished.'
Then another message. 'Do you know what you want for dinner?' You felt a little sad that your mom left again and this time without telling you, but you knew that she wouldn't do that if she wasn't really stressed and busy. Also you were kinda excited for Maria to stay with you, since the two of you got along really well and she was over every other day to hang out with you and your mom. Nobody else in your life was as present as Maria, apart from your mom of course.
So you quickly texted back. 'Hey ria, we could order pizza and watch a movie. Do you know when mom is back?' You pressed send and waited for her answer, while you mindlessly scrolled through your phone. The kid next to you was looking at your screen as well. "Is that the black Widow? How did you meet her?" You looked up in surprise. You knew that your mom was an avenger, but people rarely recognized her on the street with you. But this kid had recognized from a picture of the two of you, you on her lap she had wrapped her arms around you and you were both beaming at the camera. "Uhm now that's not her." You quickly answered and turned off your phone. Only two more stops. "Are you sure she looked like her?" The boy asked and once again. "That was my mom. She looks a lot like her, she gets asked for pictures all the time, even though she is not Black Widow." You felt bad about lying to him, but you didn't want anybody to know who your mom was. "Ohh okay." The bus stopped again and a few kids got off. "My names Will. What's your name?" "Y/N." You replied shortly. The bus started driving again and you readied yourself to get out of the bus and away from that noisy boy. "I'm in fourth grade. I think you are too. I saw you in one of my classes." He explained as if he wasn't bothered by your clear disinterest in the conversation. "Yeah I am." The bus took the turn onto your street and you got up grabbing your bag. "Oh this is my stop too." The boy said happily to get to talk more.
"Great." You mumbled as the bus stopped and the two of you got off. Your home was just a bit up the street and apparently Will's home was as well, since he just walked next to you as you walked on the sidewalk. He was talking the entire time. "My favorite Avenger is Thor. He's so cool. He can fly and with his hammer he can make lightning come down and crash onto his enemy's. Who's your favorite avenger?" You thought for a second, you couldn't say your mom or her code name, because then he would be suspicious again, so you named the next best thing. "Hawkeye. He is really skilled." You answered, smiling as you remembered your Uncle Clint teaching you how to shoot an arrow, while Auntie Laura and your mom played with little cooper. You adored your baby cousin and Auntie Laura was pregnant again, so very soon you'd have another cousin.
"But he's boring. He just shoots arrows. He doesn't have any powers." "But that means he relies on skills rather than fancy powers or suits that could just stop working." You held against it, as you stopped in front of your house and pulled out your keys.
"Bye Will." The boy looked sad to see you go, but he waved and continued his way down the street. You made your way upstairs and into your apartment. As suspected your mom wasn't here, neither was Maria or anyone else. You sighed and decided just to do the homework you had.
When your phone started ringing you picked it up, in your mind still focusing on math. "Hello?" "Hey Sweetie. I'm on my now. I'll pick up some pizzas on my back. Do you want Y/F/P?" "Yes please. Oh and can you get ice cream too?"  You heard the woman on the other hand chuckle. "Yeah I'll get you some ice cream, but don't tell your mom. She'll not be happy." You giggled, but agreed with her. "I'll be there as soon as possible." She answered and you smiled. "See you soon sweetie." You finished up with your maths homework and just before you finished the door unlocked, looking up you saw your favorite brunette.
"Hey sweetie." "Hey Ria." She came over and set the food down, before pressing a kiss on your forehead. "I'm so happy to see you." You smiled at her and gave her a hug. "I missed you too." She smiled and looked over your homework. "How is your homework going? Everything finished?" You shook your head. "Uhm I'm almost finished with maths and I kinda need to finish my history text." She nodded. "Okay you finish up with your work and then we can have dinner, watch a movie and cuddle okay?" You nodded and finished up your maths homework, luckily there were only a few equations left. "I'm done with math. Can you check it please?" The brunette, who had been working on her laptop, looked up and nodded. "Yeah of course. How about you get started on your history work while I check this."  "Okay." You pulled out your history workbook and finished up the work. Once you were finished with history, Maria explained that you had made a mistake on one of the math exercises. "See you 6/12 is the same as 1/2 so you can just do it 4/2 multiply that way."  She explained. "That makes it a lot easier and then you don't have to multiply 4/2 by 6 and get confused by that." You nodded and redid that one exercise. "I got it." You smiled as you showed it to Maria, who gave you a soft smile. "Now how about dinner?" "Yes please. Can we watch a movie while eating?" She nodded and ten minutes later the two of you were cuddled up on  the couch watching a movie Maria chose and eating your favorite pizza. "Ria? Do you know when mom is coming home?" She sighed. "Now I don't know sorry. There was a really big and important mission, all the Avengers had to go and I'm not sure when they'll be back." You suddenly felt very worried. "Will she be okay?" "I'm sure she will. Everything will be okay." She mumbled and pressed a kiss on your hair.
For the next few days you and Maria hang out. You went to the park and played soccer together, you baked cookies and right now you were drawing portraits of each other. But then her phone rang. "Hill."
She looked at you and quickly left the room, talking to the person on the other end. But then she came back in. "Hey sweetie. I need to talk to you okay?" She kneeled down in front of you. "Something happened and Natasha got taken. But everything's okay. Clint is already trying to find her and it's gonna be okay." You felt your breathing get quick and your eyes tearing up. "Everything's gonna be okay. Clint is gonna find her okay?" You nodded but you still cried into Maria's shoulder. She just held you, while you cried, before she decided to pick you up and place you in your mom's bed, where she laid down next to you. You don't really remember what happened after that, but some time later you woke up. "Hey honey. Clint called some time ago. They found your mommy and they are already on their way to get her." You nodded, feeling a bit relieved.
Maria didn't tell you about what was going on in Sokovia, her only goal right now was to make sure you were safe, till Natasha came back to the two of you.
She thought about the secret she and Nat were keeping from you and how they had just decided on how to tell you that they were in love.
"Everything's gonna be okay." And for the rest of the idea you felt like it was. It felt almost normal, like every other day you had spent with Maria. She was keeping you calm by doing arts and crafts, taking a walk through the nearby park and having ice cream.
Then around five pm she got a call while we were preparing dinner. "Okay. Do you want us to come there?" She asked when she came back into the room. "Okay we'll be there." She hung up and turned to you. "Let's go, your mom's almost back in the town. So we're gonna meet her." The two of you put our shoes on and quickly got into the car, driving towards the stark tower.
Maria showed the security guard her ID and he let us in. "Okay sweetie. I know you never met the other avengers, but don't be worried it's okay." We took the elevator up to the landing place. You held onto her neck and watched as the small jet got bigger and bigger until it landed on the platform. A group of people got out. You recognized most of them as the Avengers, but two of them you didn't recognize. A woman with reddish hair and a weird man with red skin. Then you saw your mommy. You wriggled yourself out of Maria's arms and ran towards your mom. "Mommy." She turned her head to you and kneeled down to pick you up. "Y/N." She whispered into your hair.
"I missed you mommy." You said into her hair as you held onto her neck. "I missed you too, baby." You felt her gently petting your hair, holding onto you as if you could disappear. What you didn't know was that this was a major part of the vision Wanda had shown her, but you didn't really mind. Just happy that she was back home. "Hey Nat." You felt your mom look up at Maria. "Hey Ria. Thanks for taking care of this one." "Always Nat. You know that." Your mom adjusted you to sit on her hip, while she pulled Maria into a hug as well. You heard her whisper an 'I love you' tomorrow, looking up at them you see Ria learn forward and pressing a kiss on your Mom's hair.
"Ria, why did you kiss mom's hair?" You asked her and the two adults looked at each other. "Y/N you know how most adults have someone they love a lot. Like when Y/B/Fs mommy and daddy?" You nodded again. "Maria and I love each other like that." She explained and Maria nodded a little. "Really?" You asked. Maria nodded. "Yes we love each other a lot and we both love you very, very much." You smiled at the two grown ups, leaning back into your mom as Maria pulled the two of you closer.
"So Romanoff. Wanna tell us who this one is?" Iron Man asked, looking at you

 |——————————— ⴵ ———————————|
It was late when the car came to a stop. It had been two days ago when you were told you were going to have a new foster family. You had been moving around all your life, having been left at the door of a police station merely days after you were born. You had never met your parents, and you were put into the foster system almost immediately.
No one had ever adopted you, which unfortunately for you meant that you were still going from foster family to foster family, sometimes even group homes when there were no foster families available.
In your life, you had learned it was best never to connect with your foster families. Usually, it didn't take very long until you were off to the next one anyway.
And so, two days ago when the service worker called, you had started mentally preparing for the next mess you were going to be thrown into. You had learned that most foster families were only in it for the money, and that was often very noticable, ever after the first day you'd be there. Often, they didn't care much for you, which was fine. You were perfectly capable of taking care of yourself. It was the times they did care for you when you had to be careful.
When they did care, they'd usually have a long list of ridiculous rules, all of which you had to follow. When you failed to follow their ridiculous rules, there'd usually be some type of insane punishment, which more often than not ended up with you hurt, usually because you'd take a beating.
You were a little nervous to meet a new foster family, worried they'd be another collection of horrible people that called themselves a family, yet, you weren't quite fond of the family you were with now, so you didn't care much.
For now, you'd simply hold on to the hope that this new foster family would be better than the old one.
When your case worker came, you'd already packed. Seeing as you had never owned a lot of objects, you were done rather quickly. All your stuff easily fit in one trash bag, your valuable objects, such as your beloved stuffed bunny and your favorite book were all put in your school bag.
When you had gotten into the car, you definitely didn't expect much, but when the car drove through one of the most expensive neighborhoods in New York, you were definitely surprised that that is where the car stopped.
Either your case worker was gonna leave you at the dumpster, or your new foster family is rich rich.
Alice opened the door for you with a smile, and she got your (trash) bag from the trunk. You held onto your school bag tightly as Alice walked inside the huge apartment building, you following closely behind. When you were both inside, Alice walked to the large reception desk at the left side of the lobby. A man dressed in a neat suit sat behind it.
You had never ever been in an apartment complex fancy or rich enough to have a security guard in the lobby.
You were standing next to Alice as she told the security guard you were there for a Miss Romanoff and a Miss Hill. You were looking around the large and beautiful (and extremely fancy) lobby, too busy to even notice Alice mention two women.
The man typed some numbers on some device, then pointed Alice towards the elevator. Alice walked towards it, and you followed suit, too nervous to even spare a glance towards the security guard.
Even the elevator looked fancy, and to say you were surprised when Alice pressed the penthouse button would be an understatement.
When the elevator made it all the way to the top, Alice let you walk out first. There was only one door in front of the elevator, and you figured the penthouse was the only residence on the floor. You turned to Alice, who stood there waiting for you to knock on the door. You took a deep breath and took a few steps forward, pressing the fancy looking doorbell. How rich were these people if they even had a fancy looking doorbell?
The door opened soon enough, a brunette standing in the door frame with a smile on her face. She looked nice, but in your many years of experience you had learned that looks could be very deceiving.
“You must be y/n,” she said as she looked at you, and you were too nervous to do anything but nod. She gave you a kind smile before shifting her gaze to Alice, glancing at the trash bag with concern. Alice took a step forward, extending her hand to the woman.
“You must be Miss Hill. I'm Alice, we spoke on the phone,” she mentioned as she shook the hand of Miss Hill. “I am indeed, I'm so glad you could make it.”
Miss Hill stepped aside, allowing you to look into the penthouse.
“Please come in, my girlfriend will join us shortly,” she said, and you took small steps into the apartment. Girlfriend? You could've known. She looked too well dressed to be straight…
Alice followed you inside, and stood awkwardly in the little hallway as Miss Hill closed the door. She walked in front of you and went to the right, walking into an expensive looking kitchen. It had a kitchen island, and around it were a few high stools.
“You can sit down right here if you want. Would you like anything to drink?” Miss Hill asked, and you just shook your head. She then turned to Alice, who also shook her head with a smile. “No thank you, I'll be going shortly,” she stated as she set the trash bag next to the kitchen island, reaching into her own shoulder bag for a few papers.
She pulled out a map with documents, just as another woman joined you. “Oh, Miss Romanoff, so glad I got to see you too,” Alice stated as Miss Romanoff walked towards her, shaking her hand with a small but pleasant smile.
Miss Romanoff went to stand next to Miss Hill, both standing across from you as Alice handed the map to Miss Romanoff.
“Here are the last documents, and I will be going then. If you have any questions don't hesitate to let me know, my number is somewhere in there. Of course there will be some surprise inspections, and if you would like to get rid of the child please contact the number at the bottom,” Alice stated, and you grimaced at the words she used.
Natasha was uncomfortable with the use of words as well, but you missed the worried glance she sent you and she took the documents from Alice.
You just kept your gaze on your hands, picking at the skin around your fingers as Miss Hill walked Alice out. When she returned, she took a seat, Miss Romanoff now sitting as well.
“So, y/n, I am Natasha, and this here is my girlfriend Maria. It is so nice to meet you,” Natasha smiled, but you kept your gaze on your hands. When Natasha noticed you weren't going to reply, she continued speaking. “I know this must be very scary for you, but I just want you to know it's a little scary for us as well. This is our first time fostering anyone, so if we make any mistakes you just let us know okay?” Natasha asked, and you just nodded your head.
“So where are all your bags? Is someone bringing them over later or?...” Maria asked, and you glanced at her slightly before pointing towards the trash bag. “Those are my clothes…” you said in a quiet voice, and it took everything in Natasha to not say how ridiculous that was.
“Okay, we'll just have to get you a proper bag then, huh?” Maria said kindly,  before standing up. “Would you like to see your room?” Maria then asked, and you nodded as you stood up too, going to grab the trash bag. “It's okay, I got it,” Natasha mentioned as she bent down, picking it up. “It's just this way,” Maria said as she led you through a hallway.
She opened a door that carried an empty name plate, pushing it open and standing aside.
“We didn't really know what you liked, but we tried our best. If you would like to change anything, maybe paint a wall or get some decorations you just let us know okay?” Natasha said, and you nodded as you put your school bag down by the bed, sitting on it.
“All this is for me?” you asked as you looked around the room, taking in all the objects already in it. The desk and cabinets were empty, so were the walls, but the room was massive.
Natasha nodded with a smile, walking into the room and turning to the door on the right. She opened it and stepped aside. “This is your bathroom, and right there is the closet,” she said as she pointed to another door next to the bathroom.
“I have my own bathroom?” you questioned in disbelief, and Natasha nodded with a smile.
“There is another closet right here,” she said as she opened another door, a small, undeep closet revealing itself. At the door hung a mat with little pockets, all filled with different snacks and treats.
“We didn't really know what you liked, so we just bought a little bit of everything. These are all yours and you can eat them whenever you like. If anything ever runs out or if you would like some other snack or treats, just let us know and we can get it for you,” she explained, and you nodded with a small smile as you stared at all the treats and snacks.
You had never really gotten any treats or snacks, and you didn't exactly have your own money to buy it.
Maria stayed at the door, wanting to give you your space while getting used to the new environment. “We'll just go and get started with dinner, so we'll leave you to settle in a little bit. Is there anything specific you'd like to eat? We can always order something, I'm never one to skip a good take-out meal,” Maria smiled, and Natasha walked to her side.
You shrugged, not really knowing what to say.
“We could order pizza? Or maybe sushi? Anything is okay,” Natasha pushed when she realized you weren't going to say anything yourself.
“Pizza?” you asked quietly, and Natasha smiled and nodded. “Pizza it is. Do you want a specific one?” Natasha asked as she pulled out her phone, and you shook your head softly.
“Just a margarita pizza please?” you asked, and Natasha nodded.
“We'll just be in the kitchen if you need us,” Maria told you, and she and Natasha left the room, closing the door behind them.
You dumped your clothes on the bed, throwing the trash bag aside and going through them. Most of them were old and worn, but they still fit so no one ever decided you needed new clothes. After you folded them all neatly you walked to the closet, surprised at how big it was. Your clothes didn't even fill 10% of the closet, and you wondered if rich people really needed that many clothes.
Natasha and Maria seemed like really nice people, and even though you'd never admit it, you were excited you got to be with them.
Of course you'd never trust some so fast, but until now they seemed nice and decent. The closet full of snacks definitely made you like them a little more, but you were still hesitant. You'd been in other families where they seemed nice at first, but the moment you'd make a mistake they'd beat you. You shuddered at the thoughts, grabbing a little bag of your favorite candy you found in the closet.
You sat on the bed and took out your stuffed bunny, sitting against the headboard and holding the bunny close.
You were scared and intimidated at this new place, but you were also happy you weren't at the other home anymore. Until now, this place seemed like a much better home to be.
-------------------------------------------------------------
After dinner, where you had mainly kept quiet and tried to avoid the questions they asked you, you went to your room and went straight into your bed.
You didn't sleep the entire night. You didn't know these people, and you were afraid they'd come into your room and hurt you. That happened once, in a foster family you had about a year ago. The foster father had gone into your room and he had touched you, hurting you more than you ever thought was possible.
Since that foster home, you'd always stay awake the first night, wanting to be ready if one of the foster parents did come into your room.
Of course, tonight, nothing happened. Natasha and Maria had gone to bed shortly after you had, and the entire apartment was quiet. When the sun rose the next morning, you knew you had to ask either Natasha or Maria for some electronic device.
You didn't have a phone or computer, but you were homeschooled and followed an online program. With all the moving around and switching homes, it was always difficult to find a high school you could consistently go to. And so, you had gotten an online course and some data to login. However, you'd need an electronic device for that, and you didn't have that.
When you walked into the kitchen around 8 am, Natasha and Maria were already awake. Maria was sitting at the kitchen counter, doing something on her laptop as she ate some toasts. Natasha was scrambling some eggs at the stove.
When Maria noticed you, she smiled and closed her laptop. "Good morning. How'd you sleep?” she asked and you shrugged. “Fine,” you said even though you knew damn well you hadn't slept at all.
“How do you like your eggs?” Natasha then asked, turning to you shortly before focusing on the eggs in the pan again.
“Scrambled is good,” you said as you sat down at the counter as well, preparing yourself to ask your question. After you took a deep breath and Natasha put some toast with eggs in front of you, you looked up, not really facing anyone but the counter top.
“So I was wondering…” you started carefully, and both Maria and Natasha looked at you as they waited for you to continue.
“I am doing online school, and I was just wondering if there is maybe an electronic device I could use? I don't have a phone or anything, but I do kinda need it…” you finished, your eyes darting around to Natasha, Maria and then back to the counter top again.
“Of course. We can do some shopping today, to get you some essentials,” Maria said as she got up, opening the fridge and grabbing some orange juice.
Your eyes widened slightly. They couldn't possibly mean they'd buy you a phone, could they?
-------------------------------------------------------------
After breakfast you, Maria and Natasha had gotten into their car. Their very expensive, very beautiful car. Natasha drove as Maria sat next to her. After about half an hour's drive, you arrived at a mall, and Maria opened the door for you. You thanked her and got out, following Natasha and Maria as they walked inside.
Once inside, the first place they headed for was an apple store. You were shocked to say the least, really hoping they weren't going to spend so much money on you.
When you entered the store, a worker came towards you three, asking if you needed help. Natasha said yes and asked him for the best phone they offered.
The worker led you there, and Natasha thanked him as she picked it up, examining it. You stared at the phone wide-eyed, but more so at the price. That phone was higher than 1.500 euros, and you didn't believe they'd actually buy that for you.
“Well, it looks great, what color would you like?” Natasha smiled as she went to pick up a box from the shelf.
You shook your head in shock, not believing they'd buy something like that for you. “I meant… like a device you have… that I could use… I didn't mean…” you stuttered out, and Natasha smiled as Maria laid a reassuring hand on your shoulder.
“Listen, sweetie, we just wanna get you everything you need. I promise you that we want to do this, okay? And you don't have to feel guilty that we're spending money on you, because we want to,” she told you.
Natasha looked at you too, smiling reassuringly. “We have plenty of money, and we can buy this for you easily. I promise you,” she explained.
“Okay…” you said quietly, still a bit unsure.
Natasha smiled and walked towards the phone cases, Maria, with her hand still on your shoulder followed her. “You can pick out any case you like,” Natasha explained, and you nodded as you picked out a clear case. Natasha smiled as she took it from you, putting it in her basket. Why did she need a basket?
After picking out the phone case, Natasha walked towards the ipads, looking over them and settling on the most expensive one, convinced that that would be the best.
You were about to protest, but before you could even open your mouth, Natasha turned to you. “You can't possibly do online school on a phone now, can you?”
“I really don't want you to spend so much money on me…” you told her, and she smiled at you before picking up the same color ipad the phone was. Then she turned to you, putting her hand on your shoulder.
“We want to get you whatever you need, and the money is not an issue for us, I promise you. Please let us get you what you need,” Natasha told you, and you simply nodded.
Natasha smiled and made you pick out a case, putting a keyboard case in her basket as well, claiming it was so you could use the ipad for school. You insisted you didn't need it, but Natasha just said they'd buy it just in case then.
After the most expensive trip to a store you had ever taken, resulting in an iphone, an ipad and airpods you really didn't expect them asking if you were okay to go to another store.
You said you were fine, and so you walked into another store where Natasha and Maria got you all kinds of things. All things for your bedroom, either to decorate or use. They had told you to pick out whatever you wanted, and after a lot of reassurance you had picked out several books, notebooks, some pens, markers and pencils, and some other stuff you liked.
They also let you pick out new covers for your bed, and after you told them you were fine with the cover that was on now, they told you that was one of their covers so you could pick some new ones out.
The cover currently on your bed was a new one Natasha and Maria had bought especially for your arrival, but you didn't need to know that. They wanted you to pick something you liked, and soon enough you left the store with some pillows, stuffed animals and new covers.
Everytime you came out of a store, you three had to take a trip to the car to dump the stuff you bought before you could continue your shopping spree, but at the end of the day you really had fun.
You felt a little bad that they spent so much money on you, but with their constant reassurance that they wanted to do it and that they had plenty of money, you felt a little better about it.
After you had gotten back home, Natasha and Maria both helped you put all your new stuff away, and you think you thanked them at least a thousand times for everything they bought you. After everything was put away, you went to the kitchen, sitting on the stool as the apple store bag was still on the counter.
Maria started dinner as Natasha sat down with you.
You opened the bag and took out the iphone first, opening it carefully and setting it up. Natasha helped unpack the case and handed it to you when you had set the iphone up.
You couldn't help but smile at your very first phone. You weren't old or anything, but you were definitely at an age where it was odd you still didn't have a phone. When you unpacked the ipad it was the same. You unpacked it and set it up, while Natasha took the cases out of the packaging and handed them to you.
After everything was taken care of, you thanked them once again, and they once again told you it was their absolute pleasure.
Maybe this foster home would be different…

A Christmas Outing
Tumblr media
Support my writing by buying me a kofi.
Now, this one got a way from me and I didn't mean for it to be this long but here we go. Also, did I write this story, see a Natasha one shot on tik tok and immediately get an idea for a chapter length Blackhill daughter story? Yes, yes I did. Well I write it. Maybe one day after I write my other 100s of ideas. Ugh! I need to find a job to pay me for writing.
Summary: You are the newly adopted daughter of Maria Hill and Natasha Romanoff. They want to give you a perfect Christmas day filled with everything you’ve missed but even the holiday season won’t keep the bad guys away.
Warnings: implied sexual abuse/rape, implied child abuse, kidnapping, torture, injury, reader is a mutant with no control of her powers, adopted child.
Word Count: 5K
You walked into the kitchen, rubbing the sleep out of your eyes. Maria was in the kitchen, cooking French toast. You liked the smell of cinnamon, it was a smell you were associating with Maria and Natasha. “Morning,” The agent said, looking over her shoulder as you sat down at the bar stool. “How did you sleep?” She put a glass of milk in front of you.
“Good actually.” you said, taking a sip. You weren’t crazy about milk but Helen said it would be a good idea to include in your diet because of how malnourished you were. The couple adopted you 2 months ago but you’ve known them and the other Avengers for closer to 6 months. Before that you bounced around foster homes, no one seemed to want you. To every adult, you were rude, difficult to handle, and an unhappy child. At 13, you were part of the foster population that parents didn’t want to adopt. That was until you were caught trying to pick pocket Natasha. Not your brightest moment. “I slept through the night. No nightmares.” Maria smiled as she placed a plate of French toast down. You poured syrup on them.
“Good, I’m glad. That’s great news.”
“Where is Nat?” You asked, cutting into the food and taking a bite. It was good. You did a little happy dance in your seat. Maria tried to hide her smile behind her coffee cup.
“She had some Avenger stuff she had to finish before we went out.” You nodded. It was the first day both the Avenger and the agent had since the court date. They tried to form their schedule so at least one of them would be home with you. You didn’t mind as long as they came home in one piece. Since it was December and Christmas was right around the corner, the couple wanted to take you shopping. They kept the agenda ‘need to know’ as Natasha called it. After you were done eating, you helped Maria with the dishes and excused yourself to get ready for the day.
You took a quick shower and decided on black jeans and a red flannel that Wanda bought for you. The weather was still nice in New York City. When you walked out of your room, Natasha was making herself a coffee. “Good morning, milyy.” You stopped at the familiar Russian word.
“Milyy means sweetie, right?” You asked, filling a glass with water and taking your vitamins. It was easier for you to read and write Russian than speak it. But you thought it was a good idea to learn the language since so many people at the tower spoke it.
“Yes, it is.” Natasha said. “You keep it up, you'll speak the language better than me and Bucky.” You rolled your eyes.
“You and Bucky are the reason she wants to speak the language in the first place.” Maria said, coming up behind her wife and kissed her on the cheek. You faked a gag in your water which earned you a playful glare from the agent. “She just wants to be able to understand what you guys say behind Steve’s back.” You shrugged.
“It’s an added bonus.” Natasha smirked, shaking her head.
“Ready to go?” The Black Widow questioned. You nodded, walking to the front door to put on your sneakers.
“Do I get to know what we are doing?”
“Not yet.” You pouted. You weren’t a big fan of surprises.
*
Central Park was your first spot. You were surprised that they wanted to take you to such a public place. The public knew that the couple adopted you but they wanted their privacy. A small section of Central Park had a pop up Christmas village. You lead the couple around the market with a hot chocolate in your hand to every small stone. You were fascinated with every little thing each vendor sold. You were too nervous to ask them to get you something but as you walked away to head into the park, Maria walked up next to you handing you a red beanie you were looking at you. “Just ask, okay?” She said. You nodded, ignoring the guilt that ran through you as you placed it on.
“Still learning too.” You whispered. She gave you an understanding smile.
“And you’ve made amazing progress since I first met you.” She said, slinging her around over your shoulders and pulled you into a side hug. “I’m proud of you.”
“Thanks.” They brought you over to the ice skating rink next. You sat down on the bench to take off your sneakers. “You know I’ve never stepped foot on an ice rink before.” You told the couple.
“And I’m married to a Russian and former ballerina,” Maria said. “You won’t be the only one that will look like a fool.” You and Natasha laughed.
“It will be fun.” The Black Widow said. “I’ll hold both of your hands the entire time.” She was right, ice skating was a lot of fun and Maria was a lot better at it then she led on. Natasha held on tight to your hand as she led you around the ice. “I’m going to let go of your hands, okay?” You nodded as the Russian let go of your hand. You put your arms out to help with your balance. “Look! You are a natural.” Natasha cheered as you caught yourself on the wall, the force knocked the air out of your lungs. The couple stopped next to you.
“That-that’s fun.” You said slightly out of breath. “I think I need to start working out more.” Maria laughed.
“We’ll set up a workout routine with Steve.” Your eyes went wide at the mention of working out with the super soldier.
“I said work out not die!”
“He’d go easy on you.” Natasha said. You rolled your eyes.
“Sure he would.” After ice skating, lunch was a quick stop at a pizza shop. You loved pizza. It was food you could eat every single day if Maria and Natasha would let you. Once pizza was eaten, they took you to a small Christmas tree farm.
“Pick one.” Natasha. You looked at her in disbelief.
“I can pick the tree.” Maria nodded. Oh. You looked around the tree farm. “It’s going in the living room, right?”
“Yup, right by the TV.” Okay, that was good to know so you knew how big the tree needed to be. This was a tough decision to make. You walked around the farm a few times before deciding on a tree.
“Is this the one?” Natasha asked. You nodded happily. “Good choice, kid.” You smiled at the praise. You watched as Maria and Natasha paid for the tree. A weird and warm feeling was bubbling in your chest. Your family. You were grateful for the agent and the Avenger for saving you.
*
You walked out of your bedroom after changing out of your jeans into a comfy pair of sweatpants. Maria and Natasha were stringing Christmas lights around the tree, the record was playing soft music. “Catch.” Natasha said, throwing you a Santa hat. You put it on with a laugh and joined the couple. Once the lights were on, Maria opened up a box of ornaments. It was quick work to put the ornaments on the tree. Next it was time to decorate the apartment. More Christmas lights went up and the stockings were hung on the electric fireplace.
“Can we make cookies?”  You asked.
“Of course.” Natasha said. It was Natasha’s confirmation that led everyone into the kitchen. Sugar cookies were decided. You were measuring the flour when Natasha walked behind you. She stuck her finger into the flour and whipped it on your face. You gasped.
“This is war.” You said, putting your hand into the flour and threw it at the Black Widow. It landed some on her and on the floor as Natasha dogged your flour attack. You went for another attack.
“Children.” Maria warned. Her tone caused you and Natasha to freeze. Natasha gave you a look as she went over to her wife. She wrapped her arms around her wife, keeping her in place.
“I’m sorry, moya lyubov’.” Natasha said. She sent you a small nod. You gathered flour into your hand and threw it at Maria. She couldn’t move as Natasha kept her trap. The agent’s face and shirt was covered in flour. You laughed at the stunned look on her face.
“Oh it’s so on.” A flour fight soon erupted into the kitchen. It was 1 v. 1 v. 1 for a good portion of the fight until Natasha grabbed onto you and held you as Maria dumped flour onto you. You laughed, it was getting hard to breath as you and the couple fell to the kitchen floor covered in flour. “We are never making cookies again.” Maria laughed. You were leaning against them trying to catch your breath.
“We didn’t even make the cookies!” Natasha countered. “We just made a mess.” You giggled.
“It’s your fault.” You said, pointing at the Black Widow. “You started it.” Natasha gasped in mock offense.
“How dare you.” She said, tickling your sides. You just got done laughing but the Black Widow sent into another laughing fit.
“Nat - stop - please.” You laughed, trying to escape her grasp. “No - please - Maria - help. Help!” The agent grabbed onto her wife and allowed you to escape. You placed a hand on your chest. “You are cleaning the kitchen.”
“Yeah, yeah whatever.” Natasha smiled. The kitchen was cleaned, the cookies were made, and a Christmas movie began to play on the TV. Your head rested on Maria’s lap while you ate a cookie and watched The Polar Express. Natasha was cuddled up on Maria’s other side. Today was good, it was a great day.
*
“Are you sure you are going to be okay?” Natasha asked for the 3rd time. You sighed, pinching the bridge of your nose. You were sitting on the couch, working on your homework. They decided to homeschool you. The couple had a meeting today for an upcoming mission that required both of them.
“Yes, it’s just a meeting.” You said. They didn’t like leaving you home alone. Maria walked out of their shared bedroom. “I know the rules. Don’t open the door if someone knocks. Set the alarm and call you if anything happens.”
“Are you sure you don’t want to come to the tower with us?” Maria asked, that was the 2nd time she asked that. You shook your head.
“I have homework to do and I’ll get distracted at the tower.” You weren’t wrong. If Peter and Kate were there then you would get nothing done. You stood up and walked over to them. “I’ll be fine, I promise.” Natasha sighed.
“We’ll be back as soon as we can.”
“Say hi to everyone for me.” Maria opened the door.
“Figure out what you want for dinner tonight.” You saluted her.
“Aye, aye captain.”
“And not pizza.” You pouted.
“Fine. Now go.” You pushed them out of the apartment. “Steve gets upset when you are late.” They said their goodbyes and you closed the door; locking the door and setting the alarm. You walked back to the couch and flopped back down. You continued to read. You weren’t sure how long it was until someone knocked on the door. You stared at the door above your book and stayed quiet but the knocking continued. Before you could reach for your phone, the door blew off the hinges. You screamed and scrambled off the couch as masked men entered the apartment. You ran to Natasha’s and Maria’s room as they had access to the fire escape. But you didn’t make it as arms grabbed onto you. You fought against the strong arms but they didn’t let go. Soon you felt a pinch on your neck and the world went black.
*
Natasha was annoyed as she sat in the conference room. Her arms were crossed against her chest and the only thing keeping her from yelling at Steve and Tony was Maria’s on her leg. She knew her job was important but each day she spent with Maria and you in their small apartment she valued motherhood instead of Avenging. Her and Maria have talked about retiring but it felt like everything time the conversation was brought up, they were pulled back into the fight. She sighed, this meeting could have been an email. “I apologize for the interruption,” The AI said. “But the alarm at Mrs. Romanoff-Hill’s apartment has been triggered.
“Show us the security footage, FRIDAY.” Natasha said before Steve could say anything. The AI complied and pulled up a hologram of their security footage. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first. They were watching you read on the couch until a knock interrupted the quiet apartment. You didn’t move to go answer it, one of the rules. You continued to read and when another knock happened you reached for your phone but the door blew off the hinges. Natasha and Maria stood up, knocking their chairs over. The Black Widow would remember the sound of your screams. You tried to run but the masked individuals grabbed onto you and injected into your neck. You went limp. As fast as they entered, they left with you. Natasha saw red.
“FRIDAY, find her.” Tony ordered the AI.
“On it boss.” The AI began to pull up traffic cameras and security footage, following the van around the city. “They must have taken her somewhere with signal jammers.”
“Where did you lose them?” Maria asked, grabbing onto Natasha’s hand.
“They went through the Lincoln Tunnel and that is where the signal goes dark.” There was a heavy silence in the room. “I’m sorry.” It was the first time Natasha heard emotion coming from the AI.
“We’ll find them.” Steve said. “Yelena and Kate, head over to the apartment and see if you can find anything.” They stood up with a nod and left, Yelena gave her sister’s arm a tight squeeze.
“Steve, Maria and I should go and search.” Natasha said. The super soldier shook his head.
“No, you and Maria need to sit down and figure out who is behind this.” Steve said. “They took her to get to you.”
*
You woke up to the feeling of water dripping onto your face. You tried to wipe your face but your hands were chained to the chair you were sitting on. Your eyes darted around the dark room, your mind was transporting you back to foster homes that chained you into basements. Breath. Breath. You were no use to anyone if you sent yourself into a panic attack. The door to the room opened and two men came in. “Well looks who's awake,” His voice was thick with a Spanish accent. “We thought you’d be out a lot longer but the fun can begin.”
“Look,” your voice was rough and your throat was dry. “I’m not sure what is going on but I'm nobody you got the wrong person.”
“Oh I don’t think we do, conejita (little bunny),” He said as he was handed a folder. You didn’t know what he called you but you didn’t like how he said it. Maybe you’ll add Spanish to the list of languages you’d learn if you made it out alive. “You are the daughter of Maria Hill and Natasha Romanoff.” He pulled out a piece of paper and showed you it. It was a picture of you and Maria in Central Park with her arm around you. He dropped it to the ground and pulled out the next one, it was of you and Natasha at the ice rink. He kept showing you pictures from that day; at the pizza shop, the Christmas village, and the Christmas Tree Farm.
“What do you want with them?” You asked. He smiled.
“Look how smart you are,” he said. “Your parents arrested someone very important to me.” He pointed to himself. “To his people.” He pointed to the man next to him. “We want him back and in return they’ll get their daughter.”
“Maybe your little messiah shouldn’t have gotten caught.” You said. “He should have been better.” The punch came as a surprise as blood filled your mouth. He grabbed onto your neck forcing you to look back.
“You need to watch your tongue,” you nodded. He didn’t let go of your throat as it became harder to breathe. “Let’s give your mommies a call.”
*
“Can you please stop pacing?” Maria asked as she was typing at her computer. She was going through all the missions she’s worked on alongside her wife. The list was long but it was a start.
“I can’t,” Natasha said. “I can’t sit still knowing someone has her.” She finally stopped pacing to look at Maria. “We’ve made a lot of people angry over the years.” It was true. They’ve stopped dictators, confiscated millions of dollars in weapons and drugs, and saved hundreds from imprisonment. Maria stood up and took Natasha's hands in hers.
“You're right. But they took her alive which means they want something and they will call,” Maria kissed Natasha’s forehead. “We will find her. We will bring her home.” Natasha nodded, capturing Maria’s lips with hers in a short kiss.
“I knew we shouldn't have gone to that meeting.” Natasha mumbled. Maria chuckled.
“It totally could have been an email.” The door opened but the couple didn’t separate, Maria saw Wanda standing there.
“Yelena and Kate are back,” She said. “They found something.” They walked back to the conference room quickly. It was filled with the team, all determined to get you back.
“What did you find?” Natasha asked her sister. Yelena pulled out a cloth with a design on it. Maria’s blood went cold.
“We think during the struggle this got ripped off.” Yelena said.
“They were efficient,” Kate added. “They were in and out before the cops arrived.
“Do you recognize the symbol?” Steve asked. The symbol in question was the moon in its waning crescent phase with a snake wrapped around it.
“Los Inmortales,” Natasha said, noticing the way Maria froze at the sight. “FRIDAY pull up Hector Rodriguez.” She waited for the AI to pull up the mugshot. Maria kept her eyes trained on the table in front of her. “Hector and his crew were a major weapons dealer that operated at the border between Mexico and Texas. You name it and they did it. Maria went undercover as Hector’s girlfriend.”
“How long were you under for?” Bucky asked.
“2 years,” Maria said. “We were waiting for Hector to reveal who he was selling to.” Maria felt Natasha grab her hand. “If it’s Los Inmortales that have her then they must want Hector to be released from the RAFT.”
“But who would be leading them?” Wanda asked. Maria’s stomach turned. She felt sick.
“It has to be Diego,” she said. “He’s worse than Hector.”
“Boss, you have an income stream request. Do you want to connect?” Tony looked at Maria. She took a steady breath and strengthened her posture, nodding to the billionaire.
“Put it through and trace it immediately.” The AI put the stream through the screen. They saw you sitting in a chair with blood dripping from your mouth.
“Emilia,” Diego said as he came into view. “Or should I say Agent hill, how many names do you have?” He asked. His voice sent a chill through Maria’s spine but she hid it.
“I know what you want, Diego, and you can think again if we are going to let Hector walk free.” She said, ignoring his question.
“Tsk, tsk,” he said, circling you. He placed his hands on your shoulders. “Even at the price of your daughter. We can have so much fun together, just like you and I used to. Do you remember?” Maria’s face was drained of color. “She may not be related to you by blood but I wonder if her screams will sound like yours.”
“Enough of these games,” Natasha said. “Let her go.” Diego smiled, moving his hands across your chest. You flinched, trying to get away from him.
“You are in no room to make demands or did you forget who I have, pequena arana (little spider).” He sighed, before stepping out of the frame and entering with a cattle prod. “My demands are to simply release Hector Rodriguez from the RAFT and we will return your daughter mostly unharmed.” He danced the cattle prod against your skin. You closed your eyes and Maria saw your body tense up.
“She will be unharmed or the deal is off.” Steve said. Diego rolled his eyes.
“We have to show you that we are serious.” He put the cattle prod to your shoulder and turned it on. Your teeth dug into your lip as the electrical pulsed through you. It finally became too much and you screamed.
“Enough.” Natasha said. He turned it off. Your chest was heaving. “We need time.” You looked up and locked eyes with Maria. The conversation around the agent went mute, all she could do was focus on you. You shook your head slightly, giving her a forced smile.
“We aren’t scared of the Avengers.” Diego said. “We are Lost Inmortales. We worship the moon and snake that bind us to this mortal plane for eternity. We will burn you to the ground.” It was if something snapped inside of you, Maria saw it. She knew her wife saw it too as the Black Widow grabbed onto her hand. Your head snapped to look at him at this threat.
“Don’t threaten them.” You said. It was the first time you’ve spoken since the live stream. “I wouldn’t threaten them if I were you.” Your voice was so cold, void of all emotions it startled Maria. The Avengers looked at each other as Diego turned his attention back to you.
“Now why is that?” He asked. You smiled
“Because I’ll kill you.” Maria’s jaw almost dropped. He laughed, shaking his head.
“That is funny, conejita (little bunny). You almost had us all fouled.” Part of Maria knew you weren’t joking. You looked back into the camera, right at Natasha and Maria.
“Sorry.” It was your only warning anyone got before your body turned into a liquid and escaped from your confinements. You reformed quickly but your forearms turned into ice as you grabbed the cattle prod from Diego and ripped it out of his hands. Two men appeared from off screen and charged you. You grabbed one of them by their throats and the ice from your fingertips sliced through his skin. He fell to the floor dead and his blood covered your arm. The other man slammed his body against yours and you hit the wall with a hard smack. Maria could see you stand on one leg and repeatedly knee the man in the stomach. With both hands still covered in ice, you grabbed the man by the shirt and pushed him off you. He stumbled backwards and before he had time to recover, you punched him. The force sent him into the camera. The tripod swayed back and forth before falling to the ground. The footage began to cut in and out, the last thing the Avengers saw was Diego running at you. The room was stunned into silence.
“Did anyone know that mini Agent Widow could do that?” Tony asked. Everyone’s eyes fell onto Natasha and Maria, who were just as stunned.
“The adoption agency just said she was a troubled kid with behavioral issues.” Natasha said. Truth be told, the couple or any of the Avengers never saw any of the behavioral problems that your previous foster parents talked about. You were a sweet kid dealing with a rough hand.
“Her thoughts are always loud,” Wanda said. “But this wasn’t something she thought about.” It didn’t matter to Maria, all that mattered was getting you home safe. Any mutant power would be dealt with besides they were the Avenger, that was the least abnormal thing they’ve seen.
“FRIDAY, did you find her location?” Maria asked.
“Yes, Agent Hill.” The AI said. “ They are at a warehouse in Hoboken. The exact location has been sent to you.”
*
You woke up with a groan. Your body ached and you were laying on the ground staring up at the ceiling. Standing up on shaky legs, you fell against the wall as the room spun around you. But you could see the bodies. You could smell their blood. You were going to be sick. “Conejita,” Maria called him Diego, stood up from the corner he was slumped over in. “That wasn’t nice.” He dragged his body over to you. We didn’t get to have our fun.” An alarm began to go off but that didn’t deter him. You fell to the ground as he hovered above you. “I didn’t get to tell you all of the things I did to your mommy. She was my favorite, you know? She was my favorite. But I think you could have taken her spot.” He reached out to touch you.
“Get your hands away from my daughter,” Natasha said, running in and pushing him away from you. You had little time to process her sudden appearance as you were pulled into a hug from Maria.
“I’m so happy you're okay.” She said. You froze. She felt you tense up and pulled out of the hug. “Are you hurt? Are you okay?” You stared at her as Steve came in to deal with Diego.
“I’m sorry mom.” You cried. “I’m so sorry.”
“Hey sh, you're okay.” Maria said, whipping away your tears.
“We need to get out here.” You heard Steve say.
“Dorogoy, can you stand and we can get you home?” Natasha asked. You nodded. Maria helped you to your feet and you bit back a groan. It was a blur as Natasha and Maria got you to the Quinjet and Bruce looked you over. He treated the burn on your shoulder from the cattle prod and wanted Helen to check on you. Things were happening around you. People kept coming up to talk to you but you stared blankly ahead. Their mouths were just moving, no words were coming  out. It took a snap from the Black Widow sitting next to you for people to leave you alone. At the tower, Helena gave you pain medication and said something to Maria and Natasha. They took you to their shared suite and you think Maria said the apartment was still an active crime scene.
Away from everyone the tight coil that was building since you stepped onto the Quinjet snapped. You fell to your knees as a sob escaped your lips. Careful hands picked you up and laid you onto the bed. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” You kept repeating. “Please don’t send me back.”
“Sh, carina.” Maria said rubbing circles on your back to try to calm you down. “We aren’t sending you back,” You looked at her through your blurry vision.
“You - you aren’t.” You said. Natasha shook your head.
“No, you are our daughter.” You nodded, taking in a slow and deep breath trying to calm yourself down. “Milyy,” Natasha said slowly. “Why did you think we’d give you away?” You sat back, rubbing your hands together.
“Because it’s happened before.” You sighed, not able to look at them. “I can’t control what you say. It only happens when I’m in danger or people I care about are in trouble.” You began to play with the loose treads of the blanket.
“Why didn’t you stop them from taking you?” Maria asked. You shrugged.
“I didn’t want you to find out. I like living with you guys.” You took a deep breath in and let it out finally looking up at them. “You're my moms.” You whispered. “My parents.”
“Yes, we are.” Maria said. “And that means we will be your moms through everything.”
“The good and the bad.” Natasha added. You smiled, whipping away the tears.
“Even if I get kidnapped again.”
“Yeah,” Natasha said, pulling you down to lay between you and Maria. “That’s never happening again.” You sighed, cuddling close to both of them.
“I love you guys.” You whispered, closing your eyes.
“We love you too.”

“Wake up, milyy.” Natasha whispered. You groaned, burrowing your face deeper into the pillow. “Come on, it’s Christmas.” You opened your eyes, squinting from the light. Your moms were sitting on your bed.
“Christmas?” You mumbled.
“Yeah,” Maria said with a smile. “We got presents to open then we have to go the tower.”
“The tower?” You haven’t been to the tower since they rescued you from Los Inmortales. Steve gave Natasha and Maria time off once the rest of Diego’s were arrested and sent to the RAFT. During that time you moved apartments, visited Clint in Iowa, and met Melina and Alexei in Ohio. Natasha groaned dramatically, falling on top of you.
“She went to bed and forgot our plans.” You giggled.
“Well, I can’t get up now because someone is on top of me.” You said, pushing Natasha off of you. The Black Widow fell off of you with a ‘huf.’ You sat up, stretching your arms over your head. “Feliz Navidad, mama.” You said, giving Maria a hug. You started learning Spanish right away.
“Merry Christmas.” She hugged you a little tighter.
“S rozdestvom mama (Merry Christmas).” You said to Natasha. She sat up and gave you a hug, kissing you on the cheek.
“Ugh, this is disgusting.” Yelena said. You pulled away from Natasha to look at your aunt. She was wearing plaid Christmas pajamas, similar to the ones you were wearing. It was a Christmas gift from Melina. “Can we open presents already?” You jumped out of bed and followed Yelena to the living room, the eco of your moms laughter followed you. Kate was already sitting on the couch, drinking coffee.
“Merry Christmas, Kate.” You said, hugging her from behind the couch.
“Merry Christmas, kiddo.” You sat down next to her as the rest of your family filled the empty spots in the living room. You smiled, looking at the ground.
“Alright,” Natasha said. “Present time.” Present time. You couldn’t believe you were sitting here with a family that loved you for you on Christmas morning. Yeah, today’s going to be a good day.

Summary: R is home from her first solo mission and her moms are so proud, though Natasha finds herself worried.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Your mother is a little upset that you got hurt, but we’re very proud of you, kiddo. You did great work today,” Maria said, and you could see the truth of her words in her eyes.
“Thank you, Momma,” a smile crept onto your face. “I learned from the best.”
“That you did,” she replied as she dabbed a cloth with peroxide over the raw skin above your eyebrow.
You winced at the contact and offered you an apologetic smile, “You get used to it.”
You scoffed, remembering the countless amount of times you’d seen her complain to Natasha as her wife cleaned her cuts, “that’s bullshit.”
Maria rolled her eyes, but a smile still played on her lips, “Don’t be a little punk, I was trying to make you feel better about it.”
You laughed as Natasha walked into the room as she got off the phone with someone.
Your mom walked over and sighed quietly, looking over where your face had been scraped or was bloody in various places before kissing the top of your head, “We’re working on your defensive combat this week.”
“Okay,” you nodded.
Maria looked to Natasha expectantly.
“And I’m very proud of you, sweetheart. Good job,” she smiled, tucking a piece of hair behind your ear.
You chuckled, “Thank you, Mom. I did my best.”
“I know you did, I just don’t like seeing my baby hurt is all.”
Maria finished cleaning you up, put some neosporin on the places she thought needed it, and kissed your forehead, “Good as new.”
You smiled and hopped off the stool you’d been sitting on, “Thanks, Momma. You guys down to watch a movie after I shower? Maybe Mulan?”
“Of course. You need some food in you, though, I’ll make dinner to eat while we watch, okay?” Natasha replied.
“Sounds good to me,” you agreed, before rushing into the bathroom.
When the door closed Maria leaned back against the countertop and pulled Natasha towards her, holding her upper arms. Natasha let her hands rest at her wife’s hips and took a deep breath.
“You need to be nicer to her,” Maria murmured, and Natasha nodded, eyes fixed on the floor.
Maria tilted her wife’s face towards her, “I mean it. Look how long we’ve been at it and how often do we complete a job without a scratch?”
“I know. I worry, obviously - I know you do too. I’m happy she wants to take after us, it just scares me because I know how badly this can go and god forbid-”
“Baby, stop,” Maria shook her head and ran her hands up and down Natasha’s arms to soothe her. “Our daughter is so strong, and so capable, okay? She graduated at the top of her class - I mean, we trained her ourselves. You have to trust that she can take care of herself out there. Let yourself celebrate her victories instead of worrying about what could have gone worse. You know we’re part of the reason she does this. How do you think she feels that you’re not over the moon about her success today just because she got out with a couple of cuts and bruises?”
“You’re right, I’m sorry,” Natasha sighed and put her arms around Maria’s neck, feeling her wife’s hands snake around her waist. “Thank you, my love. I’ll talk to her later.”
Maria kissed her cheek, “Anytime, angel.”

“My moms will kill me when they see all these bruises.” Y/N mumbles, studying her face from Kate’s car’s rear view mirror. She has cuts on her cheek and lip, and a clear black eye. Make up won’t hide these easily.
Kate cringes as she drives the car. “I’m sorry I pulled you into this.”
“It’s not your fault,” sighing, Y/N slumps to the passenger seat, “I wanted to do this with you.”
“Do you want me to come with you? I could clean your cuts.”
“As much as I’d love that, you know my mom would throw a fit if they saw you sneaking into my room, I haven’t told them we’re together yet.”
The car turns to Y/N’s home street. Kate bites her cheek, glancing at Y/N quickly. She knows she’s right. They don’t want to be seen together, especially now that Y/N is so clearly hurt. Her moms are incredibly protective. Daring in secret is one thing, but fighting against bad guys is a totally different thing. It’s something her moms disapprove of, knowing and having seen the danger in it.
Kate stops the car few houses away from Y/N’s. Natasha and Maria are both light sleepers, they would wake up if a car drove to their vicinity this late at night.
She turns to look at Y/N, who is takes off her seatbelt before grabbing her suit and other things. “I’ll see you later?”
“Yeah, I’ll text you.” Y/N pecks Kate’s lips and hops out of the car. She waves to her with a smile on her face until she can’t see the car.
Taking a deep breath, she starts walking towards her house. Her whole body is hurting. They did win, but it took a while. And they got properly hurt during the fight. The enemy was just a bit above their skill level, not like that has ever stopped them before.
Y/N throws her bag into her back, freeing both of her hands so she can start climbing the escape ladder up to her room. She opens the unlocked window and gets inside, after that she closes the window and locks it. Turning around, she throws her bag to the floor. When she finally looks towards her door, she yelps, throwing her hand to her heart.
Natasha and Maria are standing there. Both having their arms crossed over their chest, looking mad, until they see the cuts and bruises. Then they go to immediate worry mode.
“What the hell happened to you?” Natasha is the first one to reach Y/N. She starts moving her head around to see the extent of her injuries, while Maria outs the overhead light on. “Did Kate do this to you?”
“What? Of course not! Wh- how’d you know I was with Kate?”
Maria raises her brows, getting the medical kit from the bathroom. They have one in every bathroom cabinet. “You really think you could keep you dating Kate a secret from us? You sneak off to see her almost every night.” She pushes Y/N to sit down on her bed. “Now, tell us where you got these.”
Her face turns warm. Of course they’d already know she and Kate are dating. “Wewerefightingbadguys.” She mumbles quietly.
“Speak up.” Natasha frowns, grabbing a cotton ball and putting some rubbing alcohol on it to clean the cuts on her face.
“We were fighting bad guys.” She mumbles, slightly louder this time.
Maria and Natasha pause their movements. They stare at Y/N. She isn’t sure if they look more worried or angry. “You what?” Natasha asks, her voice eerily calm. Y/N knows that’s the worst tone to hear from Natasha. The I’m so angry I’m calm tone.
“You’re fighting bad guys.” Maria states. “Just the two of you?” Y/N nods. “With what weapons?”
“Kate has her bow and arrows, I have knives. And combat.”
Natasha rubs her forehead, closing her eyes and letting out a heavy breath of air. “Do you understand how dangerous that is?” She goes back to leaning the cuts. “You could’ve gotten a lot more hurt than this.”
“I know, mom.” Y/N mumbles, plying with her fingers. Her posture is hunched as she looks down. “I’m sorry. We just wanted to help out and prove that we can do the job.”
“You do the job after you train for it. This doesn’t prove anything.” Maria has started butting bandages on the clean wounds. “Not telling us where you are or going to fight someone without backup is very reckless. That isn’t how the job works. What if you got kidnapped? Or too hurt to move, huh? What happens then? No one would know where you are.”
Y/N’s eyes start burning while she listens to her moms lecture her. She never meant to worry them. Truth to be told, she didn’t really think about the repercussions, or what could happen on one of their vigilante missions. “I’m sorry, I really am.” She whimpers.
Sighing, Natasha puts down the cotton ball once all the cuts are cleaned. She sits next to Y/N, pulling her into an embrace, careful not to touch any of the bruises. “The most important thing is that you’re okay, you’re alive.” She kisses the top of her head. “But you can’t do this anymore, not without telling us at least, okay?”
Y/N nods, leaning against her mother. Maria puts the med kit to the side, sitting to the other side of her. “And if you really want to do it properly one day, you have to seriously train for it, with professionals.”
“With you?” She smiles, looking at Maria.
She chuckles, wrapping her arm around Y/N’s back. “Yes, with us.”
“Now,” Natasha leans back to fully see Y/N’s face, “we need to talk about Kate.” She grins when Y/N looks down, her whole face burning up at the mention of her secret girlfriend. “Are you two being safe?”
“Ew, mom!” Y/N pushes Natasha, though she barely moves. “I’m not talking about that with you.”
“I am just saying. It’s important to be safe and have a good hygiene.”
“Make her stop.” Y/N turns to Maria, whining.
Maria laughs, messing up Y/N’s hair with her hand. “Okay, okay, we don’t need to talk about that. But we do need to talk with the two of you before you sneak off to anywhere.”
Y/N groans, flopping down to her bed. She covers her face with her hands. “Get out of my room.” She grumbles, getting even more embarrassed when her moms laugh at her reaction.
“Good night, lovely.” Natasha pats her leg before standing up.
Maria follows after her. “See you in the morning.” The door closes, leaving Y/N alone to her room. She rolls her eyes, but still has a smile on her face.

Note: This story will not have a part two
"See you tonight, kid!" Your Mom, Maria, said, kissing your head
"Love you, baby!" Your Mama, Natasha, kissed your cheek
"Please don't leave!" You sobbed, tugging at the sleeves of their suits
Natasha turned her head towards Maria and shared a worried look with her wife.
This was the first time, in your 16 years of life that you reacted like this.
Not even as a baby or small child have you refused to let your mothers leave for their mission.
"What's got into you, Y/N?" Maria chuckled in an attempt to light up the mood, but uneasiness was present in her voice
"I don't want you to leave!" You chocked out in between sobs
"Honey, it's just a small undercover mission." Natasha cupped your face and wiped away your tears "It's no big deal. We do this all the time. We just need to gather some intel and we'll be back by dinner."
"I have a bad feeling about this." You tried to reason with the two women "Just stay."
Maria laughed "Nice try, kid." Then ruffled your hair "Better luck next time."
"Why wouldn't you listen to me?!" You shouted
The couple isn't sure what reaction they expected but, for sure, wasn't this one.
"Sweetheart..." Maria sighed, trying a new approach "Nick would kill us if we didn't go."
"And you know it." Natasha continued Maria's sentence
"Mama, please." You kept pleading "Just listen to me."
"We'll be back by dinner." Maria quickly kissed your head again before grabbing Natasha's hand and dragging her towards the Jet
"Mama!" You screamed, falling to your knees "No! Don't go!"
"We shouldn't have left her like that, Maria!" Natasha said worriedly, pacing back and forth
"Babe, calm down a bit, would you?" Maria sighed from her seat "She's 16. We can't keep treating her like a baby anymore. She'll be fine."
"But she is a baby!" Natasha threw her arms in the air "She is our baby, Maria."
"Natasha, honey, I know what you mean, but what I'm trying to say is that she long surpassed the toddler tantrums era."
"I know, but still..." Natasha let out a deep breath, sitting down beside Maria "I'm just worried about the state we left her in. It's not like her to react like this."
Maria extended her arm and wrapped it around her wife's shoulders "I am worried too. This is the first time she reacts like this but we can't just stay home and not go to the mission. We have a job, Natasha."
Natasha rested her head on Maria's shoulder "You're right. I can't stop my maternal instincts that are screaming at me because I left my daughter crying without comforting her first but I also can't run away from my duties. Just like you said, we have a job to do."
"That's the spirit!" Maria cheered, placing a kiss on the redhead's forehead "Now back to business, we have some intel to gather. They won't even know what hit them."
"That's because they don't." Natasha stated unimpressed "What's the point of an undercover mission if they knew we were coming beforehand?"
Maria allowed her shoulders to fall as she looked to the floor "At least I tried."
"Focus, Masha." Natasha stood up and walked toward the command panel of the Jet "We have 10 more minutes till we'll arrive at our destination and we can't risk being spotted by anyone and blowing our cover."
"Tasha, relax." Maria smirked, sinking deeper in the seat "As you said it, they don't even know we are coming."
"Maria, you're taking everything too..." Natasha began but was interrupted by the ringtone of her phone
Natasha frowned when she picked up her phone and saw Clint's name on the screen.
Maria, sensing Natasha's uneasiness, stood up from her chair and speed walked towards her wife, worry etched on every inch of the commander's face.
"Clint?" Natasha answered her best friend's call, her voice slightly trembling, as she put the phone on speaker
"Nat, it's bad!" Clint spoke in a rushed tone, worry present in his voice "It's Y/N."
"What happened to my daughter?" Natasha asked, every muscle of her body becoming tense
"Y/N... Umm..." Clint mumbled, trying to find the right words
"Talk!" Maria shouted impatient when Clint didn't give them an answer
"You both need to come home, like, right now." The man said "Y/N hasn't stopped crying since you left. She even threw up a few minutes ago and I don't know what more to do to get her to calm down. Please return to the compound as fast as you can."
"Clint, we can't turn around just like that." Maria began but a scream, on the other side of the call, interrupted her trail of thoughts
"Mama!" You screamed, choking on your sobs "Mom!"
The next thing the women heard was silence followed by a loud noise.
"Y/N, no!" Clint shouted, dropping his phone as he rushed to your side
"Clint?!" Natasha yelled "Clint, what is happening?!"
"Y/N passed out." Clint breathed out, as his breathing picked up its pace "Shit! F.R.I.D.A.Y., call Bruce here immediately!" The mothers heard him saying
Maria snatched the phone from Natasha's shaky hands "We're coming back!" She firmly stated before ending the call
The brunette commander turned around and walked to the pilot's seat.
"Agent Hill." Fury's voice echoed throughout the Jet as Maria connected her comm to the plane's speakers "Agent Romanoff."
"Nick, we're turning around." Maria grabbed the yoke, turning the jet 180° around "Y/N is sick. The mission's over."
"The mission is over only when I say it's over, Agent Hill." Nick stated "Until then, you will keep following my orders, or you and Agent Romanoff, will be suspended for an undefined term of time from work."
"I don't give a cramp about your suspension, Nick." Natasha sat on the co-pilot's chair "Our daughter is feeling sick and we will go home to take care of her regardless if we have your permission or not."
"Agent Romanoff, you must understand that-" Fury's voice suddenly became silent
"That's better." Maria sighed relieved, ending the transmission between the Jet and the base
Natasha reached over and grabbed Maria's hand, a small smile tugging at the corners of the redhead's lips.
"Thank you." Natasha whispered
"Always." Maria brought Natasha's hand to her lips and kissed the back of it "Now let's go home to our daughter."
With a nod, Natasha turned her head and looked out the windows of the Jet, every passing second feeling like torture for the worried mothers.
"Mama? M-Mom?" You muttered as your eyes opened in the slightest, slowly regaining your consciousness, as a headache hit you full force
"We're here, kid." Maria's voice was heard as she slammed open the door
"Baby, are you okay?" Natasha speed walked to your side and sat down on the bed "How are you feeling?" She brushed a strand of hair behind your ear
"You're home." You said, your voice barely above a whisper as you forced out a smile for your mothers
"We are, honey." Maria kneeled next to your head, placing her hand on your forehead "Uncle Clint told us you didn't feel too well so we came back to take care of you."
"Thank you." You mumbled, enjoying the coldness of Maria's hand on your forehead
"We're so sorry for leaving you like we did." Natasha ran her thumbs over your knuckles "But we are here to take care of you and have a lot of cuddles together."
"Really?" You asked hopefully "You and Mom aren't going back to the mission?"
"I think we won't be going back to the field for a while from now on, kiddo." Maria chuckled, a hint of sadness present in her voice "But that's a talk for another time."
Your mothers shared an understanding nod before they both climbed into your bed and cuddled with you.
"We love you so much, little bear." Natasha pulled your head closer to her chest
"We love you, Y/N." Maria wrapped her arms around her girls as she rested her head on top of Natasha's
"I'm so happy to have you both here with me." You sighed contently, closing your eyes again, but this time for a nap
Somewhere in between the arrival of Natasha and Maria and the family cuddles, Clint, who had been by your side since you started feeling sick, slipped out of the room, allowing you and your mothers to have some privacy.
"We're here." Maria whispered in your ear
It was a few hours later when Natasha and Maria decided to turn the TV in your room on and turned down the volume as you were still sleeping, too exhausted from the emotional burst you had that day.
"I hope she feels better when she wakes up." Maria whispered, putting the news on
"Me too." Natasha whispered back, stroking your hair "I don't know what got her into this state but I'm grateful we turned back and stayed with her."
"You can say that again." Maria smiled and looked down at your sleeping face
Both women sat in a comfortable silence that was interrupted only by the soft murmur of the TV.
All until Natasha suddenly frowned as she intently watched the news.
"Masha..." Natasha breathed out, confused
"What is it, babe?" Maria whispered, looking from your face to the redhead's face
"That's the base where we were supposed to go in today for the intel gathering." Natasha explained shocked, pointing toward the TV
Maria looked at the news that was playing on the TV and was shocked to learn that the news was about a building, apparently the building they were supposed to be in today, that blew up only a few hours ago, leaving no survivors.
"This can't be..." The commander mumbled before grabbing her phone
A quick call between Maria and Fury answered all the questions the couple may have had.
There was an intruder between S.H.I.E.L.D.'s agents that found out about Natasha and Maria's mission and delivered a warning to the enemies, who decided to blow up the building and every evidence that was stocked inside of it, hopping to kill the two female agents in the process.
Luckily for the married couple, they turned around exactly 6 minutes before the explosion, that was threatening to claim their lives, happened.
Maria and Natasha stared at each other with wide eyes filled with shock before they looked down at their daughter who was still peacefully sleeping, one question lingering in their minds.
How did you know about what was about to happen?
Was that the reason why you couldn't stop crying and tried everything to make them stay?
"Maybe it's like Peter's spider-sense." Maria muttered after a few minutes of silence
"Feeling the danger?" Natasha asked "I doubt that."
"Based on what we found out, I say it could be a posibility." Maria said, still in a state of shock
But no matter what they could say, one thing was clear.
You saved their lives today and they will forever be grateful for that.
How did you do that?
Not even you have the slightest idea how.
Maybe it was just the strong connection between you and your mothers that allowed you to feel they were in danger.
Or maybe not.
You'll never know.

Nick Fury & His Children
Fury reminisces on when his kids became his kids. Plus a cute Father’s Day moment.
—————————————————————————————————————
"You know you can't just take in random strays from the street that you feel sorry for." Coulson said out the blue one day.
Nick scoffed. “I do not take in strays.”
“With all due respect sir, you do. Hill, Romanoff, Danvers, even Rambeau because of Danvers. They’re all strays you’ve taken in.” Phil said matter of factly.
Fury sighed. He knew Coulson was right. “Well, if no one else is going to do it..." Fury trailed off. In his defense, he wasn’t trying to take them in, they just sort of became attached to him and he didn’t mind. It all started in 1995.
————————————————————————
Carol Danvers landing on Earth was an experience Nick Fury will never forget. Watching an alien autopsy, getting his eye scratched out by a flerken, and going to space we’re just part of the excitement of that experience. However, the most memorable part was meeting Carol herself.
Carol was bold and brave, something Fury admired about her. She was compassionate, something he saw when she was reunited with Maria and Monica. (He definitely thinks her and Maria have something going on, but he wouldn’t pry…at least not yet.)
Seeing her fly off to help a universe full of people who needed help, filled him with a sense of pride. The impact she left on him led him to name his initiative after her. Something to remember her by.
A few months after Carol’s departure, Maria Rambeau contacted him about creating an agency to monitor extra terrestrial and extra dimensional threats, he helped. Of course it was from the shadows (he can’t have many people knowing his connection to Rambeau, it wouldn’t be safe). She later named the agency Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division, or SWORD for short. He would give her the names of a few people he trusted, and gave her advice here and there but she had the whole running a super secret government agency thing down and well he was proud of her too.
It was 2000 when he saw both of them together again. She had come down to visit the Rambeaus and Maria called him telling him Carol wanted to see him. So he made the trip down to Loiusiana, Goose in tow. Carol made sure to tell him about all her adventures and he tells her he’s proud of her, but of course it’s when they’re alone, can’t have Maria or Monica seeing him this soft.
The smile he gets from her warms his heart though.
Then he and Monica subtly (it’s definitely not subtle at all) hints that she should tell Maria how it feels because watching the pine over each other is “sadder than Mufasa’s death in the Lion King” - Monica and he agrees.
Fury spends a few more days with the Rambeau-Danvers before he has to get back to SHIELD, but before he leaves he catches Carol kissing Maria and smiles to himself. Finally , he thinks, I thought it would take the end of the world for them to confess their feelings.
The next time he sees Carol is 2007, when he introduces her to Maria Hill.
————————————————————————
Now Fury didn’t go out of his way to pick agents for SHIELD, but Maria Hill was different. He picked her up from the Marines when she was honorably discharged at 22 and by the age of 24, she was one of his best agents, quickly rising through ranks. Fury only knew what she put in the files, and what his background check told him, but that didn't tell much about her home life, only her career in the Marines. When she became leader of strike team Beta, she was described by her peers as a hard ass and an ice queen who got the job done and kept them safe. However, Fury knew there was much more to Maria than what she let on. One night, he found her distraught in a boiler room, and realized he had another stray.
He didn’t say anything when he saw her, just hugged her till she stopped crying. She immediately tried to compose herself to her stoic soldier persona and apologize out of embarrassment but he stopped her.
“This isn’t the first time I’ve had to console someone in a dark room at 4am.” He’d told her. She looked at him confused, and raised an eyebrow waiting for him to elaborate.
He sighed before speaking. “This doesn’t leave this room but I have a…well I guess she's basically my kid, Carol. She’s away right now, but when she visits sometimes she gets nightmares and I find her in a similar state to you. Anyway, I’ve learned a thing or two about helping crying people in the middle of the night. You don’t have to tell me why you were upset, but you do need to talk with someone.” Maria nodded, digesting the information.
“My father died. He was a homophobic son of a bitch who hated me from the day I was born because my mother died during childbirth. I hated him, and what he put me through but the fact that he got to die without giving me any apology, hurts. He was also the last connection to my mother, he was never a father to me, but he was all I had of her.”
“For what it’s worth, Hill, I never would’ve known you came from a home life like that, you’re controlled, caring, and calm. I’m proud of you and the agent you’re becoming. You’re gonna be running this place one day.
That night, Nick vowed to make sure he’d never find Maria like that again. So he mentored her and when she was 25, Maria was promoted to Deputy Director and she finally met Carol. Something Nick slightly regrets because Carol told him the story of how he lost his eye and now Maria can’t look at him without smirking.
A year later, Maria was overseeing a mission that Clint Barton, codename Hawkeye was on, and he brought back Fury’s final stray, Natalia Romanova, codename Black Widow.
————————————————————————
When Fury sent Barton to kill the Black Widow, he expected 1 of 3 outcomes: Widow kills Barton, she severely injures him (she’s an assassin after all and Barton’s hand to hand is questionable) or he comes back with confirmation that she’s dead. He didn’t expect him to actually bring her back.
Seeing her in person was a little startling. He couldn’t believe a woman this small took out some of his best agents. While he was berating Barton for being back a deadly KGB assassin, he had Maria interrogate and assess her.
(“She’s defensive, guarded but she also seems defeated. She didn’t say much but she did say she was from The Red Room. I asked her to elaborate about her time there, but she refused. Wouldn’t say anything else until she knows what’s going to happen to her.)
After Barton plead her case, he ultimately decided she should stay at SHIELD, for her own protection and because her skills proved she could be useful.
Hearing all the things she endured during her time at the Red Room was one thing, but seeing her relive it during her deprogramming was something he would never want anyone to experience. Sometimes he could still hear the screams she let out, they were loud enough to be heard from the hallway. That day, he made a promise to himself she’d never have to go through anything like that again while under his protection.
A few months after her deprogramming, he found her asleep on the couch in his office. He would have called Clint or Maria to get her but they were on missions. A thought did occur to him though, a highly trained assassin who should have woken up when he entered the office, stayed asleep. She was comfortable with him. When he heard about what the General made her endure, he wasn’t sure if she would ever trust him or feel safe, which was something he’d hoped for (because he does try and make SHIELD as safe as possible for his agents) but didn’t expect to come so early. He did the only logical thing, covered her with a blanket and started doing his paperwork.
When she woke up a few hours later, it was because Maria burst into his office looking for her. Natasha jumped up, embarrassed (she tried to hide it but he could tell). He told Maria to wait outside his office and asked Natasha to sit in one of the chairs.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean-" she started. She looked scared, as if she did something wrong.
"Do you feel safe here?" he'd interrupted.
"Huh?" she asked confused.
"Do you feel safe in my office? Around me? Is that why you fell asleep in here?" he clarified.
"Yes," she said in a small voice.
"Okay." he replied.
"What do you mean 'okay'? Am I not in trouble?"
"No, Natasha, you aren't in trouble. I'm not going to punish or reprimand you for finding a safe place, be it the nest or my office. Besides, you aren't the only one who deems this a safe space. I don't know if they told you, but Maria and Clint sometimes sleep here, that's why I keep a blanket here. I try to make SHIELD safe for all of you, and if you feel safe here, then that's okay." he explained. He watched as she absorbed the information she was just given.
She just nodded. "Maria's probably walking a hole into the ground pacing out there, so you're dismissed." she got up from her chair and left. He faintly hear "Hi Ria", before the door completely shut.
Guess I have another one. He thought to himself.

After the fall of SHIELD in 2014, he gave the location to Maria R. and Natasha, told them to come visit him and Maria, who was staying with him, when they had time. However, when all his children did come to visit, he had been in the house alone. He woke up to the sound of whispers and clanking and grabbed the gun he kept under his pillow. He looked at the alarm clock next to his bed. 3:48 am, it read. I'm supposed to be dead and I can't even sleep in peace. he rolled his eyes at the thought. He slowly crept into the hallway, safety off the gun and ready to shoot the intruders if needed.
"Be quiet! You're gonna wake him up!" he heard a familiar voice say from the kitchen.
"Tell that to Carol and those clunky space boots, I'm surprised he didn't hear us land." Natasha's voice became clear as he walked closer to the kitchen.
"Both of you shut up, you're acting like children." he heard Hill's annoyed voice next. "If I knew you two were gonna be acting like this, I would've left you at the tower!" she complained further.
"Hey!" Carol and Natasha whined in unison.
Nick decided to stop peaking around the corner and make his presence known. "What the hell are all of you doing here? Do you know what time it is?"
All three of them jumped and turned to look at him, sheepish grins on all their faces. "This was supposed to be a surprise but those two don't know how to be quiet." Maria said
"Surprise for what?"
"Well, it's Father's Day and you've basically been a father to all of us, so we decided to surprise you today." Natasha explained.
And no matter how hard he tried to fight it, he couldn't stop the megawatt smile that took over his face.
"Oh my god he's smiling and its an actual smile; not that happy smirk he does." Natasha marveled astonished.
"Quick someone take a picture!" Carol urged.
"On it!" Maria quickly snapped a picture.
He chuckled at their antics. "While I do appreciate the surprise, next time can you do it at a decent time?"
"But, you wake up at 5:45 every morning, it was now or never." Nat shrugged.
"Maria sends her love, and a present from her and Monica." Carol told him.
He just shook his head and gave them all hugs. He watched as they excitedly shoved gifts in his face that they wanted to get opened first.

"Ok, so maybe I do take in strays but I wouldn't trade them for the world." he admitted to Phil.
"Aw that's sweet. You're going soft on me boss?" Coulson teased.
"Leave before I give you paperwork or something." Fury grumbled.
Coulson just laughed before walking away, probably going to see his own strays.
