Chapter 4: Vesper Selwyn
Masterlist
June 18, 1969
"Bella, wait!" The boy laughed as he ran after her.
"Only if you catch me, darling!" Bella laughed, quickening her pace as she shot a look over her shoulder in the boy's direction.
"Is that a challenge, Black?" He shouted with a glint of mischievousness in his voice.
"Indeed it is, Selwyn," came the girl's playful answer.
Their laughter was carried by the gentle summer breeze as they chased one another around the lake.
The blossomed flowers around them spread an intoxicating sweet scent that engulfed their senses.
'She is stunning,' he thought, his smile growing wider as he admired every feature of hers in great detail.
Bella's ethereal beauty was a sight to behold. Her long, curly black hair was flowing behind her like a dark veil, her brown eyes reflected her untamed spirit, yet she exuded an air of mystery and danger.
She moved with a grace befitting royalty and, to some extent, she was one. They both were like royalty in their world.
Despite her youth, her reputation preceded her and she had to act accordingly, carrying the weight of the expectations placed upon her by her pureblood family silently.
She was known for her quick temper, her sharp tongue, and her skill in the dark arts, but despite everything, the only thing he was able to see was her big heart, a secretly kind heart that had captured his forever.
Bella turned her head, flashing a smile in his direction.
By now, after so many years, she had memorized his features by heart. If she closed her eyes, she could see his bright emerald green eyes, highlighted by his Slytherin uniform, his well-defined jawline, and the handful of faded freckles splashed across his nose.
Her fingers twitched only at the thought of running her fingers through his wavy, short hair, its sandy blond color almost a middle ground between blond and light brown. He was taller than most young men their age, with fair skin and a smile that could brighten even the gloomiest of days.
But just as her eyes started to trail down his body, her mind swimming in thoughts about him, his shout pulled her out of her reverie.
"Careful, Bella!" The boy yelled, his eyes growing wider with fear.
She frowned, confused by his warning, yet it wasn't long before she felt herself trip on something, her body starting to fall forward with a small gasp escaping her lips.
She braced for impact with the ground, but instead, strong arms wrapped around her and she fell onto a soft body. She blinked before realizing that her boyfriend had taken the brunt of the fall.
"Vesper!" She cried, checking his body for any sign of injury. "Are you alright?"
"I am sufficiently composed," groaned Vesper. "But are you certain that you are not harmed, Bella?" he asked concerned, cupping her cheek in his hand.
"I am certain," she breathed out relieved before speaking with mischief in her eyes. "You know, if you desired my presence in the grass, you only needed to ask, my dear. Your attempt at bravery was unnecessary."
"My attempt at bravery spared you from unwanted pain, my lady," Vesper playfully smirked. "And your presence in my arms is always a treasured reward."
"Are you not deceiving me, my intended spouse?" the black-haired girl hissed daringly.
"If my intention was deceit, then I should not have agreed to marry you in two summers from now," he smiled.
"Two more summers feel like unbearable torture for me," she scoffed in annoyance. "I yearn for you to have made me your wife this summer, instead of waiting for tradition."
"I yearn for the same, my beautiful Bella," he spoke apologetically, running his fingers through her hair. "Yet this summer we barely finish our studies and we need to consider the uncertainty of the future given the whispers I am certain you've also heard."
"I can not deny that." she said as she rested her head on his chest. "Still, I can't deny my wish to be yours forever as well. To bare you children and to live all of our dreams together."
"I promise we will," Vesper leaned closer, kissing her tenderly. "Just one more week and a half of school, and then we can live our lives however we please."
"I never understood why the old man insists on the term ending on the last Sunday of June instead of a set date," Bella pouted.
"The professor knows what is best for us," Vesper reassured her. "We need to maintain our facade and not give away our intentions."
"Vesper Selwyn and Bellatrix Black," a deep voice interrupted them, startling the young lovers. "Weren't you supposed to be in your last Divination class for the week?"
Vesper stood up on reflex, pulling Bellatrix with him as they now faced Professor Dumbledore who was looking at them quite furiously.
"We can explain, Professor," Vesper rushed to excuse them.
Dumbledore silenced him with a raised hand as he scanned the couple in front of him.
"I already know Miss Black isn't interested in Divination, Mr. Selwyn," Dumbledore said.
Bellatrix defiantly crossed her arms over her chest. "That is because Divination is garbage." The young woman snapped. "No prophecy has ever proofed to be true."
"I came here for another reason. Miss Black," Dumbledore calmly placed his hands behind his back. "Please, follow me to my office. I need to have a word with you." The professor turned around and started walking away toward the castle. "Oh, and Mr. Selwyn," Dumbledore called out as he kept walking. "I think you have a Potions class to attend to."
"Of course, Professor," Vesper nodded, sharing a one last look of confusion with his girlfriend.
Bellatrix Black stood nervously outside the towering oak door of Dumbledore's office, her heart pounding in her chest as the man himself pushed open the heavy door and they both stepped inside.
The young woman dragged her feet reluctantly, hesitation evident in her every step.
The room was filled with a warm golden light from the numerous flickering candles that lined the walls. An overwhelming sense of power and wisdom seemed to emanate from every inch of the space.
However, to Bellatrix's eyes, the office seemed cluttered and disorganized. Books were strewn haphazardly across every available surface, parchment and quills scattered about in a chaotic fashion. The portraits of past headmasters lined the walls, their eyes following her every move with a knowing gaze that made her skin crawl.
Don't get her wrong. She loved chaos. A little mischief has hurt no one, but this type of chaos was overwhelming for her.
The room was filled with a strange assortment of oddities and artifacts - a gleaming sword resting on a mantelpiece, a golden phoenix perched on a stand in the corner, and a peculiar-looking device that seemed to be a mishmash of gears and cogs. Everything was bathed in a sickly sweet scent of old parchment and incense, making Bellatrix's head swim with a dizzying mix of emotions.
Dumbledore sat down at his desk quietly, his piercing blue eyes fixed on her with a mix of curiosity and suspicion. Bellatrix felt a surge of hatred and envy towards the old wizard, resentful of the power and influence he wielded over the wizarding world.
And as Dumbledore began to speak, his voice deep and resonant, Bellatrix struggled to focus on the task at hand. The room seemed to spin around her, the walls closing in on her in a suffocating embrace. She couldn't shake the feeling that Dumbledore's office held secrets and mysteries beyond her wildest imagination, and she couldn't help but wonder what other dark secrets he might be hiding behind his benevolent facade.
"Miss Black," Dumbledore began, "I suspect you would like to know the reason why I have brought you here."
"Yes, Professor Dumbledore, I must admit I am quite intrigued," admitted the young witch with a nod.
"As you know, there have been some troubling rumors lately," the man calmly spoke, raising one of his eyebrows in the slightest, "There have been certain whispers that have circulated around the community of pureblood families and around yours to be more specific."
Bellatrix's face fell, but she quickly composed herself again as she cleared her throat.
"I am doubting the fact that I have any knowledge about this, Professor," she crossed her arms over her chest, perfectly concealing her nervousness, "The last time I've seen my family was almost six months ago."
Dumbledore stood up from his desk, each step measured as he advanced towards the girl with a glimmer of doubt in his eyes regarding her claims.
"You know as well as I do, Bellatrix, that a war is about to start," quietly spoke Dumbledore, as if afraid they might be heard by the wrong person, "It is not a matter of if, but a matter of when. I might be old, but I am neither blind nor deaf. I have received small pieces of information that he is looking for a group of very loyal followers."
"And what makes you think that my family and I are involved in this, Albus?" challenged Bellatrix.
Dumbledore stopped. It wasn't every day that his students had the audacity to call him Albus, but that would have to wait.
"You are one of the cleverest witches of your age," said the professor, "You are cunning, loyal to what you believe in, and fiercely protective of those who you love. Your family is one of the most, or may I dare say, the most respected pureblood family amongst the other pureblood families. You are the eldest Black heir and the only one who is finishing her training until this point. I know you would gladly accept to become a follower to make your family proud."
"I fail to grasp the meaning behind your words, Professor," Bellatrix lowered her chin, looking through her thick eyelashes at the man.
"We must find someone within our ranks to gather intelligence from the inside," Dumbledore admitted, skipping any unnecessary speech, "And I believe that you, Miss Black, are the perfect person for this."
Bellatrix fell silent for a few moments, her mind racing with different questions she ached to ask. She could see that the old man had a point, but she was also intrigued as to why he would think she wouldn't betray him.
Or maybe it was one of his games?
Uncertain times are looming closer, and Dumbledore's decisions were as enigmatic as the future.
"What makes you think I wouldn't betray you, Professor?" The girl tilted her head, voicing her thoughts. "I don't have a reputation for believing in these nonsenses you are prepared to fight for."
Dumbledore smiled knowingly, his eyes twinkling behind his glasses. "Ah, Miss Black, it is precisely because of your reputation that I have chosen you for this task," he explained. "And I believe that you care about the greater good, even if you may not realize it yet because I've been closely observing you from the shadows for some time."
Bellatrix frowned, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside her. She had never thought of herself as someone who cared about the greater good.
"I see," hummed Bellatrix intrigued. "And what would be in it for me if I were to agree to help you?" she inquired.
"Andromeda is just finishing her fifth year and Narcissa is barely finishing her third year," Dumbledore stated. "So I can offer them protection during the upcoming fight. I offer you protection for your younger sisters and a peaceful future where your children could live safely."
Bellatrix wanted to chuckle at the last part, but stopped. Dumbledore's offer was too tempting to decline.
"Very well," Bellatrix smiled satisfactorily. "I will be your secret helper, all just for my sisters to be safe." She hesitated for a second before taking a deep breath. "But I want the same type of protection for Vesper as well. I don't want him involved in this."
"As you wish, Miss Black," Dumbledore nodded. "You have my word."
Bellatrix lingered in the headmaster's office for a little longer so they could discuss their strategy.
And as Bellatrix listened intently to her orders, Dumbledore couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt for lying to the young girl in front of him about one thing.
He knew that if Bellatrix joins the ranks of Tom's army as a secret undercover agent, Vesper would undoubtedly follow her.
He knew that Vesper and Bellatrix's fate had been sealed from the moment of their births by their families.
But what Dumbledore couldn't have foreseen at that moment was the unexpected turn certain things would take in the next almost 12 years.
Things that would force him to take drastic decisions to incline the balance in their favor once again.

Chapter 3: In the middle
Masterlist
June 27, 1996
The afternoon sun flooded through the large windows of Albus Dumbledore's office, casting a warm glow over the room. The walls, adorned with shelves filled with books, magical artifacts, and portraits of previous headmasters and headmistresses, looked even more magical.
The air was filled with the scent of old parchment and lemon drops, a comforting and familiar aroma that always made Hermione feel at ease.
The girl looked at his desk, the golden light danced off the silver instruments and trinkets that adorned Dumbledore's desk, glinting and shimmering in the sun.
Hermione couldn't help but smile as she looked around the office, feeling a sense of comfort and security washing over her. Dumbledore's office was a sanctuary, a place where she knew she could always come for guidance and support.
Or that's what she thought until now.
Hermione straightened her back, standing in between Harry and Ron as their presence had been requested in Dumbledore's office.
She was glad that Dumbledore had been reinstated in his Headmaster chair, but she knew that she couldn't celebrate this victory because many more battles were about to come.
Dumbledore emanated an aura of anxiety, giving her the impression that he was hiding something of great importance from them.
But she wasn't going to question his actions just yet.
Hermione looked at Harry, who seemed to be trapped in his own mind, not paying much attention to his surroundings. She knew that her friend's mind was still ravaged by questions about his beloved godfather's death and plans to bring him back.
The Gryffindor girl took a deep breath, a frown making its way onto her face. She still couldn't believe that Sirius' deranged cousin was back and that she had been the one to kill him.
How could she have done this to her own cousin?
Hermione was disgusted and angered at Bellatrix's actions. She thought that these beliefs some pure-bloods had were absolutely insane.
Killing your own cousin just because he believed in equality is something so wrong and out of place.
She knew that if she had had a cousin, she would have never been able to harm him or hate him in such a way, no matter how badly they got along.
Hermione had replayed the image of Bellatrix during the battle several times in her mind, and each time her body shivered with a sense of dread. She remembered her skeletal appearance, her maniacal laughter, and her sadistic threats.
After Dumbledore's soft words brought her back to the present, Hermione focused her attention on him, as he addressed the trio.
"Children," Dumbledore softly spoke, catching the trio's attention, "I know that you need more time to recover, but what I need to tell you can't suffer any delay."
"It's okay, Professor," Ron nodded.
"Harry," Dumbledore made the dark-haired boy look at him, "Again, I am so sorry about Sirius." Dumbledore said, regret evident in his voice. "He was a great man."
Harry nodded gratefully but didn't say a word, knowing that if he opened his mouth, he would start crying again. He had promised himself not to cry over Sirius' death anymore because he knew that Sirius would come back to him one way or another.
Hermione's jaw clenched tightly, a boiling anger and loathing towards the woman who caused her friends so much pain. Who caused her pain.
"If it hadn't been for that evil witch who killed Sirius—" Hermione found herself saying, but Dumbledore quickly silenced her, seeing this as the perfect opportunity to put his plan into motion.
"I wouldn't judge Bellatrix that harshly if I were you, Miss Granger," Dumbledore softly scolded Hermione.
"I'm sorry, Professor," Hermione looked down, "I just couldn't help it." She apologized, embarrassed that she allowed her judgment to be clouded by darkness for a brief moment.
Dumbledore fixed Hermione with his eyes, clearly fighting an internal battle, or at least that's what he wanted the three friends to believe.
"Every villain was a good person once," Dumbledore spoke after a moment of uncomfortable silence. "Well, maybe not all," he shrugged slightly, "But that's what happened in Bellatrix's case, at least. And let us not forget that every hero had its own moments when their minds have been clouded by evil."
The three friends shared a look of confusion before directing their gaze towards their Headmaster.
"With all due respect, Professor," Ron jumped into the discussion, a bit taken aback by the Professor's words. "But I hardly believe that Bellatrix Lestrange, a bloody murderer, had ever been different. She killed her own cousin with no regrets, after all. She tortured Neville's parents without mercy, and Godric knows how many other deeds she had executed."
"Truth is a matter of circumstances, Mr. Weasley," Dumbledore raised his voice, making Ron gulp scared. "Between the two Black cousins, the truth is in the middle."
"But Sirius had done nothing wrong to her other than believe in equality and standing against their rotten beliefs," Harry shouted angrily, his jaw clenching on reflex as well as his fists.
"There are certain things that Sirius hasn't revealed to you, Mr. Potter. Partly because I asked him not to and partly because he was afraid you would change your opinion of him," Dumbledore firmly stated. "I've known Bellatrix ever since she was an 11-year-old girl, carrying on the name Black with pride, and I can assure you that she hasn't always been this deranged Death Eater. There was something that made her become one."
"Then why won't you tell us the truth, Professor," Harry challenged, convinced of Sirius' innocence.
"I could tell you the truth, Harry," Dumbledore shifted his gaze from Harry to Hermione. "But I already told you the truth regarding your fate when we discussed. Now this is a truth that regards Hermione, and I'm afraid this truth would hurt Miss Granger and interfere with the course of events."
"Hurt Hermione?" Ron asked confused, yet his tone was filled with protectiveness as he instinctively took a step closer to his female friend. "What do you mean 'hurt Hermione'?"
Dumbledore sighed, successfully making the three youngsters believe that he had made an unintended mistake.
To defeat the dark forces, he had to reveal certain things to the kids who have the fate of the Wizarding World in their hands, while some things, he knew, they'll have to discover on their own. That is the reason why he had called the group to his office.
"Allow me to tell you a little story," Dumbledore took a deep breath as he prepared to reveal yet another truth.

Chapter 2: Denial
Masterlist
Chapter 1
June 22, 1996
The sunlight filtered through the hospital's windows, casting long shadows on the walls as hushed whispers echoed inside the room.
"Do you think she'll wake up soon?" said a voice.
"I hope so," replied another. "She's taking quite some time in doing so, mate."
"Madam Pomfrey said that she should have been awake by now," a calm, high-pitched voice added.
Hermione groaned weakly as she started to emerge from the darkness that had enveloped her.
Her eyelids fluttered open for a brief moment, but her eyes struggled to adjust to the light that seemed so harsh now.
Her head was throbbing, and her ribs felt as if they had been broken into a million pieces.
Everyone in the room held their breath as Hermione slowly regained awareness.
Hope filled their hearts as the brunette girl finally opened her eyes fully, her clouded gaze flickering around the room before settling on the face to her right.
Ron's face broke into a wide smile as he saw Hermione's eyes open and full of life again, despite the lingering pain within them.
"Hermione!" breathed Ron, relieved. "You're awake!"
"How are you feeling?" Harry asked, appearing into her line of view. "You gave us all quite the scare."
"I can agree with Harry on that one," Neville mumbled from his chair.
"I feel like..." Hermione choked out. "Like I've been run over by a train."
Ginny, who was laying on the bed on Hermione's left, looked at her brother and his friend concerned.
"Harry, I think you should go and call someone here to check on Hermione," Ginny worriedly stated.
"I'll call someone," Luna chimed in, jumping down from the edge of Ginny's bed where she was seated.
"Hey..." Hermione tried to sit up but winced, the pain in her ribs intensifying tenfold. "Ouch... I was just joking. It's a Muggle joke."
"Still... You need to be checked," smiled Luna before leaving the room.
Hermione turned towards her best friends, her vision returning to normal as she could now see her friends clearly.
"What happened?" Hermione questioned curiously, trying to piece together the fragments of her memories.
"During the battle, one of the Death Eaters threw a wordless curse at you," Harry explained, a hint of guilt flashing in his eyes.
"It was Antonin Dolohov," Ron furiously added, knowing that the name would ring a bell for Hermione. "Bloody murderer!" He exclaimed, revolted. "If Harry hadn't petrified him, we could have lost you there."
Hermione squeezed her eyes shut as her brain struggled to process the information she had just heard.
She almost died.
She could have been dead by now.
She could have been dead, and for what? For a war that wasn't even hers?
But that didn't matter.
The only people who would have missed her were her parents.
Maybe even Harry and Ron.
But she thought that Harry would have been a little too busy to allow himself to grieve for her.
So only Ron would remain.
But to the rest of the Wizarding World, she would have been just another casualty. A young witch who fell protecting her friends fiercely.
"For how long have I been asleep?" The brown-haired girl asked, in a poor attempt to distract herself from her thoughts that threatened to overwhelm her.
"For almost four days," answered Ginny.
Hermione turned around to look at the ginger girl, taking a moment to have a good look at her.
Ginny's ankle was bandaged, but judging by the position of her foot, her ankle had long been fixed.
"It was that bad?" asked Hermione, surprise present in her voice.
"It did quite enough damage to be going on with," Madam Pomfrey's voice boomed as she walked inside with Luna behind her. "Yes, the curse was less effective than it would have been if cast aloud, but you still need a lot of potions and bed rest to fully heal."
The woman walked towards Hermione's bed and started checking the girl.
Hermione made no move, but she could feel everyone's eyes on her, which made her feel uncomfortable.
She tried to think about other things that were more positive, like the fact that if she had been unconscious for the past four days, it meant that she was just one week away from the end of the school year. That also meant she was one week away from returning home to see her parents.
She was so lost in her own head that she hadn't even noticed when Madam Pomfrey stopped checking her. But she did get startled when Ron grabbed her hand shyly, giving it a gentle squeeze before letting go.
Her head snapped in his direction, but before she could say anything, Harry beat her to it.
"You should rest, Hermione," said Harry quietly. "I promise that we will explain everything to you in the morning. But for now, you need to sleep and recover."
Hermione wanted to protest. No one tells her what to do. But the heaviness in her eyelids was too hard to ignore and, with a long sigh, she nodded.
Maybe a nap didn't sound that bad after all.
The distant sound of birds chirping filled Hermione's ears as she woke up with a start. She had somehow managed to sleep through the entire evening and night.
As she opened her eyes now, the soft morning light blinded her vision before she adjusted to its intensity.
"Good morning, sleepyhead," a voice greeted her, and she instantly recognized Ron's voice. "We were wondering if you would join us for breakfast this morning."
Hermione chuckled weakly, her head turning to look at one of her two best friends, noticing that she, Ron, and Ginny were now alone.
"What my idiot brother is trying to say is that Mom will bring us some homemade food this morning," Ginny sternly explained. "He hasn't been able to sleep all night thinking about it."
Hermione smirked 'Classic Ron,' she thought, 'Always thinking about food.'
"Right," chuckled Hermione once again with a nod.
Hermione gathered the strength she had to slowly push herself into a sitting position as her muscles begged for relief. But just as she relaxed, she caught sight of something she hadn't noticed the prior day.
"Merlin's beard!" she cried, getting startled.
"Oh, that?" Ron chuckled. "Yeah, she's been like this for the past few days."
There, in a far away corner of the room, Professor Umbridge was lying still on the bed, her eyes wide open but staring into the void.
She looked relatively unscathed, if you didn't count her hair in.
Hermione couldn't help but feel a slight pang of guilt in her heart for the state Umbridge was in. She knew that Dolores Umbridge deserved it, but still...
"How did she end up here?" questioned Hermione hesitantly.
"Dumbledore rescued her from the forest," Ginny said as she stretched her arms before sitting up on the edge of her bed. "How he managed that, I have no idea," she shrugged.
"Bloody mental, that old man is," said Ron loudly, his eyebrows reflexively darting upwards. "I'm telling you!"
Hermione nodded absentmindedly at Ron's remarks, making a mental note to investigate what happened later, when she would be allowed to leave the boring hospital room.
"What more should I know?" asked Hermione, looking between the two siblings, her arms crossed over her chest.
"And then Bellatrix killed Sirius," Ron finished his story, his tone grave and filled with sadness.
"Sirius is dead?!" Hermione yelled, her eyebrows shooting into her hairline.
"Yes," Ginny confirmed in a somewhat unbothered tone. "Then Harry wanted revenge on Bellatrix, used the Cruciatus Curse on her, You-Know-Who showed up out of nowhere, Dumbledore saved Harry and after everything, Fudge officially declared that we are now at war." She finished, passing the Sunday Prophet to Hermione.
"He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named Returns," Hermione read the big bolded title on the front page.
She swallowed the lump that formed in her throat, realization hitting her like a tidal wave.
"Poor Harry!" breathed Hermione, lowering the newspaper into her lap.
She could feel tears stinging her eyes but she refused to let them fall.
She felt pity for her friend. He lost the man who was his only family and now they were thrown into an unwanted war.
It simply wasn't fair.
"You know," started Hermione revolted. "Us Muggles have our own kind of wand that I would love to use on Bellatrix for killing Sirius."
"You do?" Questioned Ginny surprised
"Yeah!" Nodded Hermione "It's called a gun and it's more efficient than a wand."
"Hermione, no!" Ron shouted
"I'm just saying." Hermione rolled her eyes
"Anyways, Dumbledore was reinstalled as the headmaster," Ron shrugged awkwardly, trying to offer Hermione at least one piece of good news.
"Thank you, Ronald. What would I do without your good news?" Hermione offered him a small nod, the room falling into an uncomfortable silence.
Thankfully, it did not last long as Mrs. Weasley walked inside the room, her face lighting up at the sight of Hermione awake and alert.
"Hermione, dear!" cried Mrs. Weasley happily, spreading her arms open to engulf Hermione in a tight hug. "I'm so happy to see you awake! You gave me such a scare."
Hermione's body protested against the hug, yet she couldn't deny the fact that she quite enjoyed the motherly hug she was receiving.
"Thank you, Mrs. Weasley," Hermione smiled, pulling away from the embrace, trying to hide her pain. "It's good to see you as well."
"My girl..." Mrs. Weasley smiled widely, pinching Hermione's cheeks.
"It's good to see you, Mother," Ginny and Ron chanted simultaneously, attempting to catch their mother's attention.
"Albus Dumbledore, newly reinstated headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, reinstated member of the International Confederation of Wizards, and reinstated Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, was unavailable for comment last night. He has insisted for a year that You-Know-Who was not dead, as was widely hoped and believed, but recruiting followers once more for a fresh attempt to seize power. Meanwhile, the Boy Who Lived..." Hermione stopped reading and lifted her head. "There you are, Harry, I knew they'd drag you into it somehow," said Hermione, in a sarcastic tone of surprise, looking over the top of the paper at her friend.
Harry sat on Ron's bed, a frown etched on his face as he appeared to be lost in thought.
After Hermione, Ron, and Ginny had eaten the breakfast brought by Mrs. Weasley, they were joined by Harry, Luna, and Neville to discuss what had been wrote in the Sunday Prophet.
"He's 'the Boy Who Lived' again now, though, isn't he?" Ron said darkly, a sneer on his face as he reached for some Chocolate Frogs from the pile on his bedside cabinet. "Not such a show-off maniac anymore, eh?"
Hermione watched as he threw some to Neville, Harry, and Ginny before ripping the wrapper with his teeth instead of his hands, causing Hermione to roll her eyes annoied.
"Yes, they're very complimentary about you now, Harry," Hermione nodded, now scanning down the article, that was making her frown. "I notice they don't mention the fact that it was them doing all the ridiculing and slandering, though."
Hums of agreement were heard as Hermione kept scanning the article with her eyes quickly.
"Well," Hermione folded up the newspaper and threw it aside, too fed up with it to keep reading. "It's certainly given them lots to write about. And that interview with Harry isn't exclusive, it's the one that was in The Quibbler months ago..." She pointed out.
"Daddy sold it to them," Luna mumbled distractedly, while turning a page of The Quibbler that she was reading upside down. "He got a very good price for it too, so we're going to go on an expedition to Sweden this summer and see if we can catch a Crumple-Horned Snorkack."
Hermione frowned as her mind tried to come up with anything to say about Luna's plans, trying to find something non-offensive to say. "That sounds lovely." She squinted her eyes with a nod of her head. "So anyway," she tried to sit up a little straighter but winced, her ribs protesting once again. "What's going on in school?"
She wanted to know everything that happened in the time she was unconscious.
"Well, Flitwick's got rid of Fred and George's swamp," Ginny was the first to speak. "He did it in about three seconds. But he left a tiny patch under the window and he's roped it off..."
"Why?" Hermione questioned, almost flinching at the news.
"Oh, he just says it was a really good bit of magic," explained Ginny, shrugging unbothered.
"I think he left it as a monument to Fred and George," Ron spoke with his mouth full of chocolate. "They sent me all these, you know," he looked at Harry before pointing at the small mountain of Frogs beside him. "Must be doing all right out of that joke shop, eh?"
Hermione shook her head disapprovingly as she forced herself to not make any remark at Ron's antics. "So has all the trouble stopped now Dumbledore's back?"
"Yes," Neville said, speaking for the first time since he entered the room. "Everything's settled right back down again."
"I s'pose Filch is happy, is he?" asked Ron, propping a Chocolate Frog card against his water jug.
Hermione looked at the card and saw it was featuring Dumbledore on it before turning to look at Ginny.
"Not at all," said Ginny, catching Hermione's attention. "He's really, really miserable, actually..." She lowered her voice to a whisper, afraid someone might hear their conversation and get them in trouble. "He keeps saying Umbridge was the best thing that ever happened to Hogwarts."
Hermione said nothing as she looked around the room, her gaze settling on Umbridge who was wide awake but didn't show any signs of awareness.
She knew that it most probably wasn't anything serious. Right?
Madam Pomfrey had said it herself that Professor Umbridge was just in shock, although Ron had discovered that she did react to certain sounds.
Horse galloping sounds, to be more specific.
Yet, Hermione barely muffled her laughter as Ron showed them once again his discovery, making Madam Pomfrey, who was just then passing by their room, ask Umbridge if everything was okay.
"Speaking of centaurs,'' Hermione asked once she was able to control her laughter, "Who's the Divination teacher now? Is Firenze staying?"
Now that was information she not only wanted to know but needed to know.
"He's got to," Harry supposed, shaking his head. "The other centaurs won't take him back, will they?"
"It looks like he and Trelawney are both going to teach," Ginny added.
"Bet Dumbledore wishes he could've gotten rid of Trelawney for good," Ron said, munching on another Frog. Hermione lost count of how many he had eaten at this point. "Mind you, the whole subject's useless if you ask me. Firenze isn't a lot better."
"How can you say that?" Hermione gasped demandingly. "After we've just found out that there are real prophecies?" From the corner of her eye, she noticed Harry shifting in his seat nervously. "It is a pity it broke," she quietly continued, shaking her head in disappointment.
"Yeah, it is," Ron said. "Still, at least You-Know-Who never found out what was in it either. Where are you going?" he added, as Harry stood up.
"Er - Hagrid's," said Harry, nervously. "You know, he just got back and I promised I'd go down and see him and tell him how you two are..."
Hermione had a feeling that Harry was lying, trying to find an excuse, but she brushed it off as a mere thought.
"Oh, all right then," Ron replied grumpily, disappointed that his best friend was leaving so soon. "Wish we could come..."
Harry started speedwalking towards the exit, leaving his friends behind in a state of confusion and curiosity.
"Say hello to him for us!" called Hermione. "And ask him what's happening about..." She quickly tried to find the right word to use. "About his little friend!"
She didn't receive an answer as Harry was already gone.
Hermione sighed sadly, reaching for one of the potions that were on her bedside cabinet. She scrunched her nose in disgust, opening the cap of the small bottle of the potion.
"Is that the fifth one?" questioned Ginny.
"The sixth," said Hermione, quickly drinking the potion to get it over with as quickly as possible. "Just four more to go."
"Four more?!" said Neville, surprised.
"Madam Pomfrey said I have to take 10 different potions a day for the entire summer," Hermione nodded sadly. "Not the most pleasant way to spend your vacation, but she says I need it."
"Which you strongly disagree," added Ron, shoving another Chocolate Frog in his mouth.
"Stop eating, Ron," Hermione ordered. "You're going to have a chocolate rush."
"Who says that?" Ron mumbled.
It felt like an eternity for Hermione until she was finally deemed completely recovered to be allowed to leave the hospital.
It has been five long days and she couldn't have been more bored, despite having time to read as many books as she wanted. Being the last one to be discharged didn't help with the boredom either.
But on the bright side, there were only three more days left until the end of the term, and the girl couldn't be happier.
She had already started packing her things, eager to have a respite from the brewing war and fights.
She was now in her room, her clothes scattered around on her bed as she preppared her luggage just in case.
She groaned, bending down to pick up one of her shirts that she had accidentally dropped while folding. The soreness was too stubborn to leave her alone too soon it seems.
"What kind of curse had he used?" Cried Hermione loudly, taking advantage of the fact that she was alone in the room.
She scoffed.
"Hex you, Dolohov," she added through gritted teeth.
She continued folding her clothes, but her mind was worrying about Harry.
Hermione had tried to bring up the matter of Sirius' death on various occasions, yet Harry tried to avoid the topic, with Ron not being much help as the ginger boy made hushing noises each time she tried to say Sirius' name.
She knew that Harry was in a state of denial. He tried to block out the fact that Sirius wasn't coming back, lying to himself that his godfather would return in one way or another.
Harry refused to hear any mention of the Department of Mysteries or of Sirius being dead, and Hermione wasn't blaming him, but denial wasn't going to help him face the loss.
Nonetheless, he would have to accept the truth sooner or later.
She couldn't deny that Sirius' departure brought a sense of sadness to her as well. She had grown to like Sirius over time and he offered her a feeling that she had known him long before they actually met. Yet, he was nothing to her.
Shaking her head, she abandoned what she was doing, deciding that a walk near the lake would do her good, helping her clear her mind.
She left the dormitory and made her way outside, only to find Harry and Ron already sitting by the lake.
"Don't worry, mate," she heard Ron say, patting Harry's back, "we'll find a way."
"Oh, how lovely to see you two having such an intellectual and engaging conversation without me. I'm sure your discussion about Quidditch tactics is absolutely riveting," she stepped closer to the two boys, her tone half filled with sarcasm, half with mischief.
"Ya wish!" chuckled Ron, turning to face her.
"It's good to see you walking around these grounds again," Harry said, trying to offer Hermione a smile.
"So what's the plan now that the Ministry has finally acknowledged that You-Know-Who is back?" asked Hermione.
"We're not sure just yet," said Harry, looking down at the ground.
"Hey..." breathed Hermione, placing her hands on Harry's arms, "We're a team, okay? We'll get through this just like we have done before." She took a deep breath before adding, "Together."
"Always," Ron smiled.
"Always," Harry nodded.
"There you three were," a voice called, making the trio turn their heads only to see Professor McGonagall speed walking in their direction. "I've been searching for you everywhere."
"Something wrong, Professor?" Harry asked, concerned that something might be wrong.
"I swear, we didn't do anything this time! We were just discharged from the hospital, barely even got out!" Ron's voice shook with fear. "I thought we were going to rot in there if they kept us one more day locked up."
"Mr. Weasley," Minerva McGonagall began, disappointed. "I am asking you to stop being dramatic. Luckily, you three haven't caused any mischief this time."
"Then what is the matter, Professor?" Hermione raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. "What do you need us for?"
"Dumbledore is requesting your presence in his office," said McGonagall. "He said there is something more he wants to privately talk to you about before you leave."
"What more could he want to tell us?" Harry said quietly.
McGonagall fixed Hermione with her eyes, a mix of sadness and apprehension shining in them.
"I'm afraid I cannot answer that question, Mr. Potter," the woman said. "But I heard it is something that concerns Miss Granger."
"Me?!" shouted Hermione, but before she could say anything else, she was interrupted.
"Come on now," McGonagall said, turning around to walk back to the castle. "Everything will be revealed in its own time."
Hermione, Harry, and Ron shared a concerned look.
They were scared of what secrets would be revealed this time.
The afternoon sun reflected its colors on the surface of the lake as the three friends walked side by side towards Dumbledore's office, ready to face whatever was coming as a united team.

Chapter 1: Department of Mysteries
Masterlist
Prologue
"Department of Mysteries," the voice announced as the lift stopped.
June 18, 1996
The teenagers didn't know what to expect as they stepped out, all frightened but putting up a brave face.
Hermione Granger, the brightest witch of her age, was ready to stand by her best friend's side, ready to face whatever lay ahead as a true Gryffindor would do.
"This is it," Harry breathed out, forcing himself to sound brave for his friends.
They started taking small but determined steps towards the door in front of them, with Harry leading the way through the corridor.
Hermione silently walked right behind Harry. Her heart was pounding against her chest, and her hands were becoming sweaty.
"Okay, listen," Harry's voice pulled everyone out of their own thoughts as he stopped before reaching the door. "Maybe...," he hesitated. "Maybe a couple of people should stay here as a lookout and—"
Yet, he didn't get to finish his sentence as Ginny, clearly fed up with Harry's hero act, interrupted him.
Hermione chose to let her friends deal with Harry, thankful that Ginny, Neville, and Ron took the initiative to put Harry in his place.
The brunette girl took a deep breath as she watched Harry turning the knob of the door, pushing it open.
"Lumos!" Harry said as the tip of his wand started glowing.
"Lumos!" Hermione and Ron followed Harry's lead.
Hermione looked around, scared at the darkness surrounding her.
Here it was cold, too cold for her liking, and it made her involuntarily shiver.
Hermione wasn't sure what she expected to find, but she clearly wasn't expecting to see thousands of shelves filled up with countless crystal globes covered in dust.
She briefly looked to her left and noticed that Ron was as scared and confused as she was, and there was no doubt that Harry felt the same way.
A rumbling sound broke the eerie silence, and all six members of the Order let out a soft gasp.
The door they had just finished walking in through started moving, as the walls started rotating.
'Clever move,' Hermione thought. 'They don't want us to know which door we came in through.'
The girl slowly turned her head to look at Harry, at the same time as Ron did, and the three teenagers shared a look of concern before Harry started to speed walk through the shelves, hoping to find the same row number he saw in his vision, praying that they would arrive in time to save Sirius.
"You said it was row ninety-seven," Hermione whispered to Harry, waiting for confirmation.
"Yeah," Harry breathed out, and she watched him lean forward to have a better look at the end of the closest row.
Hermione looked around, her mind racing a thousand miles per hour as she squinted her eyes to the next row.
"We need to go right, I think," whispered Hermione again as she tried to read the number of the row. "Yes," she mumbled once she spotted something. "That's fifty-four."
Harry quickly took off, almost running, as everyone else did the same.
"Ninety-seven!" Hermione whisper-shouted, being the first to spot the number they had so desperately searched for.
The bright witch watched with bated breath as Harry stretched out his hand towards a globe that Neville had pointed out to have Harry's name on its tag.
"Harry," Hermione warned sharply, as she felt something was not right about this globe. "I don't think you should touch it!"
But her warnings fell on deaf ears as Harry picked up the globe, ignoring her.
She internally rolled her eyes in annoyance at Harry's behavior, but her attention quickly turned to the small bluish globe that suddenly lit up when her friend held it.
She couldn't shake off the feeling that something bad was about to happen.
The silence that enveloped this mysterious room was too weird.
And just then, from the corner of her eye, Hermione caught some movement and she knew that what she feared was true.
Everything was a trap.
"Harry!" She urgently called her friend, pulling him out of his trance.
Harry immediately lunged forward, putting himself in between the imminent danger and his friends.
"Where's Sirius?" Hermione heard Harry demand.
"You know..." A deep voice echoed in the silence, making Hermione sharply turn her head towards the masked Death Eater that kept getting dangerously too close to them. "You should really learn to make the difference between dreams," The figure clothed in black, its face hidden by a mask, finally stopped, only to pull out a wand and with a wave, reveal itself to them. "And reality. You only saw what the Dark Lord wanted you to see."
Hermione allowed a soft gasp to escape her lips.
The Death Eater in front of them was none other than Lucius Malfoy.
The teenagers stiffened their shoulders, their shaky hands tightly gripping their wands.
"Now hand me the prophecy," demanded the old Malfoy.
"You do anything to us and I'll break it!" Harry threatened, hoping that this would buy them enough time to devise a plan.
Suddenly, a sickening, sweet voice, filled with evil intentions, laughed.
"He knows how to play!" Laughed the female voice. "Itsy-Bitty... Baby." The figure stepped out of the darkness, her steps accompanied by the sounds of heels. "Potter!" She finished in a mocking tone.
Hermione didn't like how insanely sweet that voice sounded and the girl felt her blood freeze in her veins as she recognized the face in front of them from the Daily Prophet, yet she still took a moment to have a good look at the woman's features.
She had long, jet-black hair with untamed curls, adding to her appearance that made her look insane. Her skull-like face did little to betray the spark of life in her dark eyes. It was as if the Dark Lord had raised her from the dead to serve him, but Hermione knew it was more than that, as her pale skin was a stark contrast to her crimson red lips.
Despite her thin, Azkaban-shaped physique, Hermione could easily imagine this woman as a stunning beauty in her youthful years.
"Bellatrix Lestrange," Neville growled, moving forward from behind Hermione's back.
The shock on his face was clear as day, even in the dimness of the room, upon seeing Bellatrix Lestrange standing before him in the flesh.
"Neville Longbottom, is it?" Bellatrix faked curiosity as if she didn't already know who he is. "How's Mum and Dad?" She asked, a sadistic smile appearing on her face.
It was as if she took pleasure in tormenting the poor boy who lost his parents because of Bellatrix.
And in Bellatrix's eyes, Hermione saw the fire of hate and anger burning deep within them.
Hermione couldn't comprehend why Bellatrix hated Neville so much.
"Better now that they're about to be avenged," Hermione heard Neville growl again as the Longbottom boy lifted his wand, ready to attack.
But before things could escalate further, Harry was quick to hold Neville back, as Lucius did the same with Bellatrix.
Harry pushed Neville back, and as he did, his right foot stepped on Hermione's toes.
"Ah..." Hermione sharply took a breath in, looking down at her foot before leaning closer to Harry. "What?" She quietly questioned her friend.
"Now, let's everybody just calm down," Lucius raised his arms, trying to calm the tense atmosphere. "Shall we? All we want is that prophecy."
"What?" Urged Hermione before Lucius could finish his speech.
"Why did Voldemort need me to come and get this?" Harry inquired, pretending he hadn't heard Hermione.
"You dare speak his name?" Gasped Bellatrix. "You filthy half-blood!" She shouted, making Hermione flinch.
'There's no doubt she's insane,' Hermione internally chuckled, keeping her thoughts to herself.
"It's alright," Lucius once again tried to maintain some semblance of peace. "He's just a curious lad," he said, looking Harry dead in the eyes. "Aren't you?"
Harry turned his head, pretending to avoid Lucius' gaze. "Smash shelves..." he hissed.
Hermione's eyes widened as she understood the message.
"When I say go..." Harry continued, careful not to reveal what he was doing to the Death Eaters.
"Prophecies can only be retrieved by those whom they are made," the elder Malfoy continued, interrupting Harry, "which is lucky for you, really."
Hermione took advantage of the distraction provided by Lucius' speech as she turned to the person on her right, who happened to be Ginny, to pass down the message.
"Smash shelves when Harry says to," Hermione whispered to Ginny, making a sign with her hand for her to pass down the message to the rest, to which Ginny answered with a short nod.
"Haven't you always wondered what was the reason for the connection between you and the Dark Lord, hm?" hummed Lucius.
Hermione slightly jumped, scared, when from different sides, more masked Death Eaters stepped out of the shadows.
They were being circled, with no way to escape.
She should have guessed that they wouldn't leave this place without a fight.
'Wonderful,' she thought, trying to distract herself from the fear that threatened to overwhelm her.
She scanned their surroundings, quickly trying to come up with a plan to escape.
Hermione didn't hear the rest of the conversation between Lucius and Harry, her mind focused on the possible outcomes as the Death Eater in front of her kept getting dangerously too close to her.
She could hear her heart pounding in her ears, awaiting Harry's signal.
And just then, Harry's yell reached her ears.
"Now!" shouted Potter.
"Reducto!" Hermione yelled, her hand reflexively shooting the spell towards a shelf.
"Run!" yelled Harry again, and they all took off running as the shelves started to collapse.
The next moments were a chaotic blur for Hermione as she and her friends tried to avoid falling shelves and crystal globes from hitting their heads.
She cast spells left and right, only registering a frightened "Stupefy!" she shouted when she saw a Death Eater grabbing Harry's shoulder.
Next thing she knew, the brunette witch was falling 20 feet through the air, while the screams of her friends filled her ears.
"Arresto Momentum!" Hermione screamed, waving her wand through the air.
Then, she felt her body coming to an abrupt stop right before hitting the ground.
She let out a grunt when she was finally dropped face-forward but at the same time, she let out a long sigh of relief.
She was thankful that her quick thinking saved her life and her friends' lives.
Again.
She looked around, allowing her heightened senses to calm down for the moment, as she confusedly assimilated her surroundings.
Hermione's frown only deepened when she heard Harry mumble something as he started to walk towards a weird stone archway that was so conveniently placed in the middle of the room.
"Careful!" warned Hermione in a hushed whisper.
She was afraid this was another trick of the Death Eaters to get their hands on Harry's prophecy.
"Let's go," she urged again when she saw Harry ignoring her warnings. "This isn't right, Harry, come on, let's go..."
She followed him up the archway's stairs, stopping halfway, too scared to continue.
Yet Harry showed no signs of listening to her.
'He couldn't be that stupid, could he?'
"Harry, let's go, okay?" she kept pleading with him, fear overwhelming her instinct to go there and grab him by his hand and drag him away from there.
"Okay," the boy finally agreed.
Hermione exhaled relieved, but her relief was short-lived when Harry made no move to walk away from the archway.
It was as if he could hear and see something she couldn't, and Merlin, that was annoying.
"What are you saying?" Harry asked loudly, his gaze not leaving the archway.
"Nobody's talking, Harry!" Hermione had enough of this silly game of Harry's.
She pushed aside any lingering fear she might have had and moved towards him.
Harry's claiming of hearing whispers coming from the archway was concerning, to say the least, and it was creeping Hermione out.
"I can hear them too," Luna agreed with Harry, "there are people in there."
'You can't be serious!' Hermione thought annoyed, desperate to find a way to get Harry and Luna back in their right minds. 'That if they ever were in their right mind!' Hermione mentally added.
"What do you mean 'in there'?" Hermione angrily demanded, too sick of this. "There isn't any 'in there', it's just an archway, there's no room for anybody to be there — Harry, stop it, come away —"
With one swift move, she grabbed his arm, surprised to feel him resist her, not budging to move a single inch.
"Harry, we are supposed to be here for Sirius!" she used Sirius as a last resource.
And she was pleased to notice that the mention of Sirius had sparked something inside of Harry as he said, "Let's go."
She must have relaxed too soon because, out of nowhere, a black fog enveloped them, and she heard the unmistakable laugh of none other than Bellatrix Lestrange.
Hermione tried to fight against the fog, she really did, but when a whisper was heard, she froze in fear, unable to think of at least one spell to defend herself.
"You're next, Mudblood." The voice of Bellatrix whispered in her ear, making Hermione shiver.
Hermione found herself on her knees on the cold, stone floor, a hand tangled in her curls.
The young witch let out a whimper as she tried to move her head and free herself from what she guessed was the grip of a Death Eater but stopped when pain darted through her skull.
She was terrified, she isn't going to lie.
Her eyes scanned the scene that was unfolding while tiny whimpers escaped her lips, and she saw all of her friends, except Harry, were held in place by a Death Eater, unable to interfere with what was happening between Harry and Lucius.
Hermione had no choice but to watch with widened eyes the chaos unfolding as Sirius showed up out of nowhere just to punch that greasy-haired Malfoy, Aurors appearing as well to save them, and the prophecy getting smashed.
Hermione's breath came out in short ranges as she fearlessly threw herself into the fight that was unfolding.
Right after dodging a "Crucio!" casted by Bellatrix in her direction, she spotted Harry and Neville fighting side by side, having some troubles.
"Crazy witch," Hermione mumbled as she ran towards her male friends. "Stupefy!" she shouted, finally catching up with the two boys, the red jet of light hitting a Death Eater.
Spells and curses were flying in all directions, but the Muggle-born girl tried to ignore it, letting it be just background noise for her ears.
"Impedimenta!" a triumphant cry echoed, and Hermione felt herself being knocked off her feet backwards.
She groaned in pain as she tried to regain her bearings, the safety of Harry and Neville filling her mind before her own.
"We got him!" a man yelled, pulling Hermione out of her confused state.
She turned her head towards the voice, her eyes growing wider as she saw a Death Eater grabbing a disoriented Harry by his jacket.
"Silencio!" Hermione shouted desperately.
Luckily, Harry recovered quickly enough and was able to shout a "Petrificus Totalus!" at another Death Eater that was approaching him.
Hermione's heart filled with pride for Harry's fast reaction.
"Well done, Ha—"
Hermione stopped.
It was as if her heart stopped beating.
A purple light passed through her chest before dissipating into thin air.
The air left her lungs, but as she started losing her balance, she let out a single, weak sound.
"Oh!" Hermione gasped, surprise flowling in her voice.
She did not expect this at all.
The girl started to fall forward, the world around her growing darker with each spin of her vision.
Was this how her end looked like?
Was this going to be the way she died?
Who would tell her parents she died in a magical fight?
Hermione didn't feel the stone floor as she hit it, but she did hear one last cry before closing her eyes, her cheek resting against the ground, yet her mind did not recognize whose voice it was.
"Hermione!"

Stardust and Shadows
Prologue
Masterlist , Chapter 1
Summary: Buried secrets resurface, blurring the lines of reality and unraveling the tangled web of magic. In a world gripped by shadows, Hermione Granger stumbles upon a hidden truth she could have never fathomed. Behind a cloak of lies, she discovers a shocking revelation - that she is no mere Muggle-born witch, but the long-thought dead daughter of none other than Bellatrix Lestrange, the only rightful heir to the House of Black.
In the magical realm, where witches and wizards strive to coexist harmoniously with other enchanting creatures, an insidious evil silently slithers in the shadows. Patiently biding its time, this malevolent force eagerly awaits its opportunity to launch a devastating assault, shattering the fragile balance established by the united forces of light.
Amidst this precarious existence, a clandestine secret, known solely by an elite few, takes the form of a prophecy.
While society fixated on the well-known fate of the Boy Who Lived, their attention unwittingly bypassed another foretelling, etched into the records of destiny a mere few months prior.
This time, it was the tale of a young girl, whose remarkable insight would become instrumental in toppling the dark forces that threatened their world.
Born from the very essence of love yet shaped by the cruel hands of tragedy, her path would be ordained for greatness, but at a price far steeper than most are willing to bear. Sacrifices, boundless and profound, would punctuate her extraordinary journey.
She would emerge as a beacon of hope, a force against darkness, and a guardian of all that is good and pure.
But, let us not forget that even villains bear secrets concealed within their tainted hearts. Unbeknownst to many, this heroine's tale is intricately intertwined with a once-beloved protagonist turned malefactor. For it is said that a villain's descent often begins as a hero's ascent, and in these turbulent times, that truth is more haunting than ever.
Whispers echo amongst the wise, foretelling the arrival of an imminent storm. A tempest of monumental proportions encroaches upon their realm, threatening to consume all in its path.
And when this storm unleashes its fury, it is imperative that all inhabitants, both light and dark, stand prepared to face its wrath.
"There's a storm coming," he solemnly warned, gaze filled with trepidation. "And we'd all best be ready when she does."

"Y/N!" Morgan, your cousin, cheered as you stepped out of the car.
"Morgan!" You shouted as you ran to her to give her a hug.
Morgan, the daughter of Tony and Pepper, was 7 years old and, although she was 2 years younger than you, she was your best friend.
Today, you asked your papa, Bucky, if he could take you to Morgan's house for a playdate, and he agreed.
Anything for his little doll.
Bucky's purpose in life was to make you the happiest little girl in the world.
Or at least he tried to, but ever since your mom sacrificed herself 2 years ago to bring him back, you haven't been as happy as you used to be.
"Hey, Morgan." Bucky smiled at Morgan. "Where's your mom?" He questioned.
"Mommy just came back from work and she's taking a nap." Morgan explained. "She left Uncle Happy to watch me."
"And he left you alone?" The man asked, concerned.
"No," Morgan shook her head. "He is just making a sandwich for me in the kitchen."
Bucky let out a relieved breath. "That's good."
"Come on now, Morgan." You encouraged, taking your cousin's hand as you pulled her inside the house. "I came here to play."
You and Morgan have been playing quietly for about an hour now, both of you engrossed in different activities.
Morgan was building a block out of some Lego pieces while you were making a puzzle.
Bucky was watching you from the couch, his eyes never leaving your face as you struggled to find the last piece of your puzzle among other pieces from different puzzles that were in the box.
"I've found it!" You suddenly shouted excitedly, holding up the last missing piece of your puzzle.
"Shh, Y/N, don't be so loud." Morgan whispered-shouted at you, placing a finger over her lips. "We can't make too much noise because my mom will wake up, and she needs to rest."
"Oh..." You breathed out, allowing your shoulders to fall as you looked down at your now finished puzzle. "Okay. Then let's play at my mom's grave and maybe she will wake up."
Bucky's heart broke in that very moment, and a few tears escaped his eyes, but he was quick in wiping them away. He had to be strong for you.
"She's been asleep for too long," you added with a voice filled with sadness.
"But yours will never wake up again." Morgan exclaimed confused. "Mommy said the same thing about daddy. But they are now sleeping forever."
You sniffed away your tears and nodded. "I know."
You knew that your mama was now sleeping forever and that there was no possible way to wake her up ever again.
Not even by making too much noise.
Bucky wanted to shield his little girl from this heartache so badly.
But he couldn't.
He didn't even have the heart to tell you that your beloved mama wasn't even buried in her grave, and he doesn't know if he'll ever be able to confess it to you.
Natasha would have wanted him to move on and to keep on living happily for you, but it was too hard.
And as you looked at your father, he gave you a watery smile, trying to reassure you that you will both get through this. As a family.
Maybe...
Just maybe, if you were playing loud enough, Natasha would wake up.

The sunlight filtered through the lavish villa with its floor-to-ceiling windows and plush purple curtains, that were a constant reminder of Natasha's mysterious personality.
Natasha had started her day normally, with her morning workout and signing a few pepers that would set in motion a string of actions meant to grow her empire.
Nothing was predicting what was about to happen that very same day.
The invincible head of one of the most powerful mobs to have ever existed slowly, deliberately made her way up the stairs as sunlight filtered through the curtains and a gentle breeze rustled them.
Natasha's destination?
Her 10-year-old daughter's room.
She was about to wake her precious Y/N from her peaceful slumber so they could have breakfast together.
Y/N, who Natasha had protected from the darkness of her mother's world, knew that her mama was the leader of a group as everyone always looked at Natasha for orders, but she had no idea what exactly was Natasha doing for a living.
You thought she just ran many businesses, as Natasha took care to preserve your inocence and leave aside that running those businesses meant hurting people.
As she reached your bed, Natasha took a moment to admire your inocent and beautiful face, a smile only reserved for you appearing on her face.
She had honestly no idea what she had done to deserve such a beautiful and pure soul she could call her own.
Sometimes she wonders from where you inhired so much kindness.
Maybe from your father?
'Could be.' The older readhead thought
Natasha, dressed elegantly in a tailored black suit that she loved, bended down to shake her sleeping daughter awake, whispering softly, "Y/N, it's time to wake up, my darling."
Natasha didn't want to rush you.
She wanted to allow you to wake up to the world in your own time so you could be in a good mood to greet the day.
You started rubbing your eyes, letting out a yawn in the process, "Morning, Mama." You sweetly greeted your mother, only making her smile grow wider "What time is it?"
"It's ten o'clock, sweetheart. Time for us to start the day." Natasha replied, brushing a strand of your hair behind your ear as you stretched your arms
You glanced at the clock on your nightstand and, to your surprise, you notoced that Natasha had let you slept in late this morning.
"Wow, I slept in!" You looked from the clock to Natasha, shocked
"It's Sunday today, my princess." Natasha smiled, gently tracing your nose with her finger
"What's for breakfast?" You questioned as your stomach let out a loud growl
Natasha chuckled as she gathered you in her arms, tightly hugging you as she burried her nose in your hair.
Natasha didn't answer before taking your hand in hers and leading you to the dining area.
There, a table was spread with an impressive display of freshly baked croissants, blueberry pancakes, and tropical fruits.
"You're in luck, my love. Today, we have your favorite breakfast." Natasha said when she heard you gasp, smiling warmly as she helped you seat at the table
You both sat down to enjoy the delicious feast, engaging in lighthearted conversation, Natasha making sure to give you her full and undevided attention.
But there was one question that has been on your mind, that, in between bites, you found the courage to finally voice out.
"Mama, I've been wondering..." You hesitated, avoiding Natasha's gaze, unsure of her reaction "What exactly do you do for work?"
Natasha's smiling expression faltered slightly, but she quickly regained composure, not wanting to betray her façade.
"As you know, sweetheart," Natasha began, trying to keep a smile on her face for you "I manage a lot of things. But mainly, I help people. I ensure that they stay safe and secure."
That piqued your curiosity, making you want to know even more detailes about your mother's secret profession.
"But do they know about what you do?" You eagerly questioned, the breakfast long forgotten "How do you keep them safe?"
Natasha's eyes meet yours, a mixture of love and concealed secrets shimmering within them, struggling to find the right words to explain.
"Some people may not fully understand the lengths I go to protect them, Y/N." Natasha carefully chose her words "That's why I keep my work separate from our personal lives."
For a moment, Y/N pondered her mother's words. Then, her young innocence surfaced.
"Mama, can I come to work with you sometime?" You asked hopefully "I promise I'll be good."
Natasha's expression softened, and she chuckled lightly, suppressing a faint sadness.
"Maybe, when you're a little older, my darling." She softly said "For now, your place is here, being a child."
You nodded, a tinge of disappointment flickering across your face as you took a last sip of your orange juice, your eyes lingering on Natasha's figure as she got up, preparing to leave for work.
"Okay, Mama. I'll be waiting for you here when you get back." You said sadly "Then we can build the new Harry Potter Lego set uncle Bucky got me yesterday because I won't start it without you."
Natasha leaned down, planting a tender kiss on her baby's forehead. Her voice is filled with a mother's love.
"I'll be back before you know it." She smiled "I love you, Y/N/N."
As Y/N watched her mother walk towards the grand entrance, her heart felt heavy with a mixture of pride and longing.
"I love you too, Mom. Stay safe." You whispered to yourself when Natasha was out of hearing's reach
As the heavy door closed behind Natasha, Y/N was left alone in their opulent villa, a silent witness to a secret world she still yearned to explore.
She knew that someday, she would uncover the truth and join her mother in the world she had only glimpsed from a distance.
But for now, she must wait patiently, feeling a mixture of excitement and trepidation for the day she too would step into the shadows and play her part in keeping the world safe.
But who said that day couldn't be today?
Natasha stood in the dimly lit room of an abandoned building, fear and tension hanging heavily in the air caused by her sharp and deadly presence as she stood over a HYDRA member.
The man, who was a member of Natasha's biggest rival mob, looked to be in his midforties, as he stood desperate and defiant, trembling while tied by Natasha's men to a chair.
Although bloodied and bruised by Natasha's torture, he kept refusing to reveal the informations she was was seeking.
Through gritted teeth, the HYDRA member, fueled by his determination, challenged Natasha's ability to extract their secrets.
"You think I'll give up our secrets that easily?" He chuckled mockingly "You're gravely mistaken, Natasha!" The man declared
Natasha smirked, a hint of amusement mingling with the darkness in her intentions.
She took a step closer, circling him like a predator stalking its prey. Her piercing gaze bores into him, determination etched on her face.
"Oh, sweetie, I never expected it to be easy," She replied confidently "But trust me, people like you always break. It's just a matter of time."
The woman's attention drifted to the HYDRA member's clenched fists, trembling with both pain and defiance. Impatience flickering within her as she narrowed her eyes.
"You see, I've got a timeline to keep. And I won't waste it dancing around your games." Natasha says, her back turned to him
"Why?" The man laughed "You have a child waiting for you at home?"
Natasha tried to stay calm.
She couldn't allow the member to manipulate her judgment by using her sweet daughter against her.
Casually, the red-headed woman pulled out a sleek, silver pistol from her belt.
The cold metal gleaming in the dimness of the building's lights.
"One last chance, my friend," Natasha warned, her voice laced with an eerie calmness but her friendly demeanor was gone "Tell me what I need to know, or I'll have to find another way to encourage your cooperation."
Smirking defiantly, the HYDRA member responded "You think a bullet from that gun is going to make me betray my comrades? You're delusional, Natalia."
Natasha's calmness faded, replaced by a cold determination that instilled fear even in the bravest souls.
Without a moment's hesitation, she swiftly turned around, raising her pistol, and aiming it at the HYDRA member's forehead.
"I was hoping you'd choose the easy way out..." The boss murmurs, slightly disappointed
A single gunshot reverberates through the room, the sound of finality.
The HYDRA member's lifeless body slumped forward, blood pooling onto the cold concrete floor.
"Was it really necessary to kill him, Natasha?" Clint, Natasha's best friend who was present in the room, questioned
"I agree with birdhead." Maria said
"I wouldn't question Natasha's decisions if I were you." Steve turned to his two friends
"I agree." Bucky, the last person present in the room, nodded while checking the sharpness of his knife's blade
Natasha remained silent, her eyes glued to the blood that was expanding at her feet.
And just as the silence threatened to envelop the room again, a soft whimper broke through.
Natasha's eyes widened with surprise "We're not alone." She warned
The lifeless body of the HYDRA member lay forgotten, a casualty of Natasha's relentless pursuit of power, as the group quickly took a fighting stance, weapons being pulled out, ready to protect their leader and friend.
Natasha turned towards the spot from where the sound was heard and saw a slightly ajar locker.
She slowly started walking towards it, ready to face whatever was hiding inside.
Natasha tightened her grip on the gun in her hand, her hands steady and ready to shoot at any moment if needed.
Her steps echoed throughout the empty room as her heels made contact with the cold floor.
Trailing behind her were Bucky, Steve, Clint, and Maria, all prepared to fight at a moment's notice.
The boss' steps where mesured, each one meticulously calculated, as the air around them grew heavy with anxiety.
Slowly, Natasha reached out towards the locker door, and with one swift move, she slammed it open, pointing her gun at whatever lay behind it.
Silence enveloped the room once more before a loud gasp escaped the read headed woman's lips.
"Y/N?!" Natasha shouted, her voice unintentionally coming out too high-pitched
You flinched at the sound as your trembling body began to shake even more violently.
Natasha was shocked. Of all things, she never expected to find her precious daughter hidden in that damned locker.
"Baby?" Natasha breathed out, quickly putting away the gun she had aimed at your head "How did you get here?"
Natasha tried to place her hand on your shoulder.
"Get away from me!" You cried out, quickly moving away from Natasha
You crawled out of the locker in a second as you took a few steps backwards, trying to get as far away as possible from your mother and the rest of your family.
"Sweetheart?" Natasha called out "How did you get here?"
Natasha was confused, to say the least.
She couldn't understand how the fuck were you able to get all the way here.
How did no one see that you had followed them?
"Don't touch me!" You yelled when Natasha tried to touch you again
Tears were already streaming down your face and, as you looked at your mother with your teary eyes, you couldn't recognize the woman who stood before you anymore.
"You're a monster!" You cried out in pain "Monster!"
Taking a big step forward, you tried to push Natasha backwards with all your might, but compared to the strenght of your mother, your effort was almost non existent.
Natasha took half a step back to give you the impression that you had managed to push her, but otherwise, she didn't budge.
"Baby, Y/N, how are you here?" The older redhead asked again, confusion evident in her voice as she tried to maintain her calm "What have you seen?"
"You killed him!" You pointed to the corpse of the enemy, now laying in a pool of blood
You were now old enough to know what a criminal is, and you are now more than certain that your mama was one as well.
"How could you do this?!" You shouted
"Honey, this is not what it seems." The boss tried to save what was left of your innocence "We were just playing." She explained "You know that Mama's job is to protect people."
"Y/N/N!" Your godmother, Maria, called "Let's go home, kid. Your Mama will explain everything when we've all calmed down a little."
"I don't want to go home!" You shouted in Maria's direction, though your tear-blurred vision made it difficult to see her clearly
Bucky, thinking it would be a good moment to step in, kneeled beside you.
"Princess, I think you should let us explain ourselves first." He began "And we can have ice cream while we all talk."
"No, James!" You shouted, moving away from Bucky's touch as he placed his hand on your shoulder
Everyone froze.
You had never called Bucky by his real name.
He was mostly 'Uncle Bucky' , 'Bucks' , or just 'Bucky'.
Only Natasha called the man by his birth name.
"Oh, come on, doll," Bucky said, overcoming his shock and masking it with a cheerful tone. "Don't be so serious. Only your mother can scare me like you did. When she's angry, she shouts my name like that."
You looked again to the dead body, only to find it already gone and your Uncle Steve nowhere in sight.
You knew he was the only one fast enough to get rid of it.
"Listen to us, Y/N." Clint also spoke for the first time "You know you're my favorite niece."
"I'm your only niece." You sniffed, seemingly more calm, and everyone tought that maybe they had the situation under control
But their hopes were soon dashed as you bolted past everyone and ran towards the first door you saw.
"Y/N!" Natasha's eyes went wide, and she quickly darted after you
Bucky and Steve, who had just returned to the room, followed closely behind the two redheaded Romanoff girls.
They should have known that you were tricking them.
After all, you are your mother's daughter.
Just as Natasha was about to catch up with you, you proved yourself sneakier than they had anticipated, taking a right turn and disappearing from their sight.
The adults followed, finding themselves on a back street behind the building they had been in.
"Where is she?" Steve asked, confused, looking around for any sign of you
"Y/N!" Natasha breathlessly shouted "Baby, where are you?!"
"Y/N!" Steve shouted
"Y/N!" Bucky yelled, starting to look around for any trace of you "Doll, stop playing and come out from wherever you're hiding. This isn't funny!"
"Sweetie!" Natasha called out, sniffing, as realization of what happened settled in "Mama's sorry, honey. Please come here."
"Natasha..." Bucky turned around to look at his boss before he was interrupted
"Nat!" Steve shouted, chatching Natasha and Bucky's attention as they snapped their heads in the direction of his voice
Steve bent down and picked up something from the ground.
"I think I know where Y/N is." The blond man said, looking in disbelief at his friends
Natasha felt as if her heart was about to jump out of her chest as Bucky raised his metal arm and placed it on her back, bracing himself for whatever was about to come.
Steve held up the object in his hand and showed it to them.
Natasha's breath caught in her throat as she took in the sight before her.
HYDRA's symbol proudly shone in the sunlight, confirming her worst fear.
The boss was smart enough to understand what the presence of that badge with the symbol of her greatest enemy meant.
HYDRA had kidnaped her precious baby girl.
She didn't know how it could be possible, given the fact that they were only two seconds behind you but no matter how this happened, the mother was determinated to get her baby back.
"What are we going to do now?" Bucky breathed out
Natasha was tirelessly pacing back and forth on the long red carpet in her office; her angered voice was the only sound that broke the otherwise silent room.
"How could this happen?!" Natasha shouted as she stopped in front of Bucky Barnes and Maria Hill. "How could a little girl get past my supposed impenetrable security?! How did none of you notice Y/N sneak inside the car?!"
Maria and Bucky exchanged a quick, side-eyed look before both of their heads hung low.
It was as if the wooden floor of Natasha's office had become interesting all of a sudden.
"Talk!" Natasha shouted when the people in front of her hesitated to answer.
"We..." Maria, the person who was in charge of Natasha's security and the training of her men, began. "We have no idea how the men failed to notice-"
"I haven't asked about the men!" Natasha cut Maria's sentence off. "I asked how you haven't noticed Y/N getting inside the car. You and Bucky, Maria," Natasha clarified.
"It was a terrible error, Nat." Bucky was the one to speak now. "I guarantee you that, from now on, we will be more vigilant and we'll double the security guards to prevent this from happening again. We can-"
Bucky's sentence, as well as Maria's, was cut short when Natasha forcefully grabbed Bucky by his shirt and pulled him closer to her, despite the obvious height difference between them.
"You had one job, James." Natasha breathed out through gritted teeth, her eyes burning with a mix of anger and disappointment. "You had to make sure that, no matter what happens, Y/N will not leave this house without my knowledge and consent, and only after that, follow me."
Bucky's shoulders fell as he once again lowered his head, guilt seeping inside his heart.
"I'm sorry..." The man with a metal arm whispered guiltily.
"I want to hear none of this." Natasha shook her head, her tone seemingly calmer. "Yes, Maria had to transform this house into a fortress impossible to penetrate, but you, James, you had the greatest responsibility of them all." The redhead tried to look into the man's eyes. "You had to be the personal bodyguard of our daughter, James, ensure her safety above anything else, and you failed. You promised to keep her safe, and look where we are now. HYDRA has our precious little girl, and we have no information about her state or about, who knows what, they might have done to her. You failed Y/N." Tears glistened in the mother's eyes. "You failed me."
Bucky dryly swallowed the lump in his throat; the burden on his shoulders never felt heavier than now.
He failed.
And he knows it.
He knows that if something were to happen to the impossible product of the passionate love he and Natasha once shared, the consequences will be catastrophic. Natasha's wrath knows no bounds when it comes to her one and only offspring.
If something were to happen to their beloved daughter, Bucky would be the only one to blame.
"I swear that I'm going to bring our little girl back here safe and sound." Bucky met Natasha's tearful gaze, determination shining in his eyes. "It's my duty as a father, Natalia."
Natasha took a deep breath; her facade momentarily dropped in front of the man she once laid bare her soul and body.
In front of the man who knew all her scars, seen and unseen.
"You better, or I won't be Natalia for you anymore. You'll have to meet Natasha if you don't fulfill your duty as her Papa." Natasha quietly sniffed before taking a step backwards, her back straightening as she regained her composure. "You have 24 hours to bring my daughter back home, or else I am going to tie you both to my car, drag you through the entire New York before slowly boiling you to your death and cut you up in pieces and feed you to Reaper, who would be more than delighted to eat you."
Natasha pointed to Reaper, your dog, a towering Doberman who could devour a person in seconds if commanded, but otherwise a gentle and loving companion.
Reaper slowly walked to Natasha and nudged her hand with his nose, looking up at her as if he knew that something was terribly wrong.
Despite having a scary appearance, Reaper was a loyal companion and fiercely protective of you and Natasha.
But more specifically, of you.
Natasha had bought Reaper three years ago for you, hoping that you would find a friend in that puppy and learn to be responsible at the same time.
But you and Reaper had become so much more than just friends.
It was as if you and he were connected by an invisible bond that transcended any logical explanation.
"What is it, boy?" Natasha asked, concerned, her voice soft, as she crouched down next to the dog, petting his head. "What happened?"
Reaper looked at Natasha, and in that moment, the three people in the room could see tears forming in the animal's eyes.
It was as if a lightbulb lit up above Natasha's head when she saw it, her heart dropping to her stomach.
"Is Y/N, isn't she, Reaper?" Natasha hesitated to ask as if the dog could answer her with words. "What happened to Y/N, boy? What happened to her?"
All adults watched intently every move the Doberman made, holding their breath in anticipation.
Reaper let out a whimper before his muscular body collapsed to the floor with a long sigh at Natasha's feet, his fall cushioned by the soft carpet beneath their feet.
Natasha's eyes widened with dread; Bucky's brows furrowed in confusion, and Maria's steady hands unexpectedly started trembling.
They knew it was physically impossible, but they couldn't deny that this sign scared them.
Natasha slowly stood back up from her crouched position and took a deep breath before she directed her attention back to her two trusted friends.
"Go!" Natasha ordered angrily. "Leave and find Y/N as soon as possible. I swear that you will not live to see tomorrow's sunrise if my baby isn't back in my arms by then."
Bucky and Maria nodded and hurriedly rushed out of the room, both desperate to achieve one goal.
Bring Y/N safely back home.
"I don't give a fuck that your men are out undercover on the streets of Asgard, Thorvald," Natasha shouted into the phone's speaker. "You're going to gather them all from that city's streets and send them to find any trace of my daughter. End of discussion!"
Natasha ended the call before she threw her phone on her desk with a long sigh.
"Remind me again why I have made an ally out of Thorvald Odinson?" Natasha placed her head into her hands.
Clint, Natasha's best friend and most trusted person, looked up at her and shrugged.
"Maybe because Thor saved your life during an attack where he could have easily let you die?" The man raised his eyebrow. "Or maybe because he genuinely cares about you, and I bet that right in this moment, he already has all his men retreated from the streets and sent out to scout the area around HYDRA's territory?"
"That's because he has the personality of a Golden Retriever." Natasha pointed out with a scoff. "His hair included."
"That's true." Clint nodded. "But you must admit he has been a loyal friend and a great hide and seek partner for Y/N."
A faint smile made its way onto Natasha's lips before it was quickly replaced by a frown.
"I am so worried, Clint." Natasha's voice shook as she looked up with tearful eyes at her friend. "I'm scared that something bad happened to Y/N. It's all my fault that she had to see me as what I truly am." She took a deep breath before continuing. "A monster."
Clint took a few steps forward and placed a comforting hand on Natasha's shoulder, giving it a slight squeeze.
"It's not your fault, Nat." Clint said in a sympathetic voice. "You only tried to protect her. You tried to hide her from the horrors of the world you had been forced to live in because you didn't want her to have the same childhood as you did."
"And at what cost?!" Natasha threw her hands into the air. "Look where it had brought me."
"We're going to find her, Tasha." The man reassured his friend.
All of a sudden, the door of Natasha's office burst open, and Bucky, Steve, and Maria ran inside, pure terror written on their faces as Bucky clung to something in his right hand.
Natasha shot to her feet as her eyes searched the faces before her for reassurance, but the only thing she found was her own panic mirrored on her friends' faces.
Clint followed suit and straightened his back as he understood that something was terribly wrong.
"Nat..." Bucky breathed out, his eyes swimming in unshed tears.
Natasha took a few tentative steps towards Bucky, a deafening silence enveloping the room as the powerful boss stopped in front of the man who once was hers.
No words were spoken, but Natasha understood.
Bucky lifted his arm and showed the redheaded woman the object he was tightly holding.
Natasha's breath caught in her throat, and the world around her started spinning.
The people around her instinctively took a step forward, but Bucky was quicker in reacting as he managed to catch the woman just in time.
"Natalia!" Bucky shouted as he supported Natasha's weight with one arm while shaking her head with the other.
"Natasha, are you okay?" Steve asked, concerned.
But Natasha didn't respond. She remained limp in Bucky's arms, her face pale, and her eyes wide with shock. The room fell into a heavy silence as everyone watched helplessly.
Finally, Natasha took a shuddering breath, and her eyes refocused. She looked up at Bucky, her voice barely a whisper. "Is... is that... Y/N's shirt?"
Bucky nodded, his own voice filled with pain. "I'm so sorry, Talia. They sent it to us... drenched in her blood."
Tears welled up in Natasha's eyes as she clutched onto Bucky tightly, the weight of the situation finally hitting her.
They had confirmed her worst fear: Y/N had been taken by HYDRA, and there was no doubting the severity of the situation.
Natasha pulled away from Bucky and steadied herself, her eyes darting around the room. "We need to find her. We need to bring her home."
Steve stepped forward, determination etched on his face. "We'll do everything we can, Nat. We'll find her."
Natasha nodded, her resolve hardening. "I don't care what it takes. I don't care who gets in our way. We are going to bring our daughter back."
Clint stepped forward, his voice steady. "We have contacts, Nat. We have resources. We'll use everything at our disposal to track down HYDRA and get her back."
Maria, who had been silently observing, finally spoke up. "I'll coordinate with our intelligence network. We'll gather all the information we can and find any possible leads."
Natasha looked at each person in the room, gratitude and determination in her eyes. "Thank you, all of you. We're a family, and we're going to fight for our little heir."
But as she tightly clung to the small, bloodied shirt of her baby girl, Natasha couldn't escape the panic and worry that had engulfed her brain and heart, one question lingering.
Was Y/N still alive?

Natasha and Maria were quietly sitting on the couch in their living room, snuggled closer to each other as their 8-year-old daughter, Y/N, was sandwiched in between the two women.
'Lilo and Stitch', Y/N's favorite movie was playing on the TV and their little girl was absolutely fascinated about everything that was happening in it as if she wasn't seeing this movie for the millionth time.
Natasha had to buy 40 new DVDs with the movie, in the last 7 years since its release, because Y/N watched them so often that they quickly got scratched and, therefore, almost useless.
Natasha could only blame her wife for introducing their daughter to this movie.
Now, truth be told, Maria wasn't actually the other biological parent of Y/N.
Years ago, when Natasha was still a young mere prisoner of her own life, she was forced by the organization that had taken care of her training to have intimate relationships with a man she didn't even know.
More of like, being offered against her own will by the Red Room to one of their men but that is all in the past.
She was ready to keep living with everything that happened to her as long as the only good thing that came out of everything, her daughter, was by her side.
A knock at the front door interrupted Y/N's innocent giggles and the little family looked confused towards the door.
Who could be at the door at this late hour?
"I'm coming!" Maria shouted, carefully moving Y/N's sleepy body, who was using Maria as a pillow, away
"I'll get it." Natasha quickly placed her hand on Maria's arm, stopping her
Maria looked at Natasha for a second and the agent wanted to protest but the reassuring smile the redhead was wearing was too tempting.
"As you wish, my love." Maria smiled back
"I'll be quick." Natasha quickly peaked her wife's lips, then stood up, making her way towards the front door
Natasha opened the front door, unaware of the darkness that was lurking just on the other side of it.
A sickening smirk formed on the face of the man who was standing just in front of the red-headed woman.
"Hello, Natalia." He said "Long time no see. Did you miss me?"
Natasha froze in place for a moment as she took in the sight of the man she never thought she would see again.
Memories of a long-forgotten time had resurfaced in her mind.
She shook her head "No..." Natasha whispered "What are you doing here?"
"Well, you know..." The man began "I came to take back what's mine."
Natasha looked at the man, her eyes widening in shock.
"You are not going to take my daughter away from me!" She protectively declared
"Our daughter, my darling." The man corrected her "Oh, and what makes you think that I'm here just for our daughter?" He chuckled "I am here for you as well, Natalia. You are mine just as much as our daughter is." He stated as a matter of factly "How is she, by the way?"
The man took a step forward, walking uninvited inside Natasha's home, and looked around.
"I bet she grew up a lot in the time I haven't seen her." He added when Natasha hesitated to answer his question
"Leave her alone, Lev." Natasha raised her voice "She's innocent. She doesn't have anything to do with all this madness. I thought you were busy planning the world's dominance. How come you have come for us after all this time? How come that HYDRA let you leave their safe prison."
"How?" Lev chuckled "I was never a prisoner at HYDRA, to begin with, unlike you. I am one of their highest-ranked agents. Why do you think they offered you to me out of all people?" He explained "Now I am here to claim what's mine. And this time, neither you nor our little girl will run away. I will find you anywhere."
Anger raised inside of Natasha just as much as fear built inside her.
She couldn't believe her eyes. She couldn't believe that after all this time, the man who hurt her and took advantage of her body was here to claim something he never took part in.
More specifically, in the raising of Y/N, which he had no right over.
"Just leave us alone." Natasha shouted
"You wish!" Lev laughed sadistically
From inside the living room, Maria's ears picked up on the raising tone of her wife's voice, and her instincts kicked in, telling her to go and check what was happening.
"Stay here, baby." Maria kissed your head "Mom is gonna go and quickly check if Mama is okay out there and see who is at the door."
"Okay, Mom." You replied distracted as your attention was fully focused on the movie
Maria stood up and with one last ruffle of your hair, she made her way towards the front door.
"Honey?" Maria called Natasha confused, as she took in the sight of the unknown man sitting in front of her wife "Are you okay? Who's is he?" She pointed to the man "Were you expecting someone?"
"So this is that so-called wife of yours I've heard about." The man smiled "Well it's nice to meet my replacement but we have to leave, Natalia."
Maria looked confused between Natasha and the man for a second.
"What do you mean you have to leave?" Maria asked "Babe?" She turned her head towards Natasha, waiting for her answer
Natasha looked up from the floor, directly into Maria's eyes and the brunette could see the tears that were present in her wife's eyes, causing Maria's instincts to heighten immediately as a surge of protectiveness overflowed her senses.
When Natasha begged Maria to help her just with one look, Maria pushed Natasha behind her with a swift move.
"I don't know who you are." Maria said, her muscles tensing "But I'll have to ask you to leave. Nicely." Se ordered the man through gritted teeth
"You have no right to tell me to leave." The man laughed "I am here to claim what's mine and you, weak woman, will never be able to make me leave."
Just then, Maria's brain clicked on what was happening and she understood who the man that was standing in front of her was.
"You monster." Maria whispered angrily "I know exactly who you are."
"Well..." The man raised his arms, proud of who he was "It took you some time to figure that out." He sang "I expected you to be smarter than this."
"This is the last time I am asking you nicely to leave this house. That unless you want to have some serious problems." Maria said once again
"Oh, come on." The man chuckled sarcastically "You don't expect me to be afraid of a woman and especially of you, don't you?"
"Well, I wouldn't say the same thing if I were you." Maria tilted her head "I am ready to do anything to protect my family."
"Your family?!" The man shouted "They're mine! I am going to take my belongings and leave."
"They are staying here." Maria protested "You don't even know how my daughter is named, let alone have any right over her. I raised her ever since she was a five-month-old baby. I was the one who changed her diapers, checked for any monsters under her bed, and loved her, not you." She hissed "And the same goes for my wife. She's mine for a reason."
From the corner of her eye, Maria saw some movement right behind her, and she saw the man's smirk growing wider.
"Aha, my sweet girl!" The man cheerfully exclaimed "I finally came home. Are you excited to see me?"
Y/N silently peeked at the man from behind her moms.
"Mama?" You called shyly "Who's that?" You pointed towards the man
"No one, baby." Natasha quickly tried to make you leave "Just go back to the movie, okay? Me and Mom will be there very soon."
"Mom?" Lev raised his eyebrow "There is no such thing as another mom. I am your other parent, sweetheart." The man tried to tempt you in a sweet tone "I came here so you could have a normal family. I am your Dad." He declared
"Dad?" You asked confused, looking up towards Natasha "I have no dad. I have Mama and Mom. I already have two parents."
"Well, your parents must be a mom and a dad, not two moms." Lev tried to turn you against your mothers
"But, I love my moms." You innocently declared "They love me and we're always having fun. And Mom always carries me on her shoulders and buys me ice cream, while Mama reads me bedtime stories and gives me the best hugs in the world."
But just before you got to finish your sentence, the man snatched you away by your arm and forcefully held you in place.
You let out a terrified scream as tears quickly made their way down your cheeks.
"Mama!" You screamed out in fear, begging Natasha to help you
"Leave her alone!" Natasha screamed as she tried to grab you back from the men, but she didn't manage to "My baby!"
"Leave my child alone!" Maria threatened "That's my daughter you're holding there. You just don't get it."
"These two girls are mine! And she's coming with me." He pointed towards you
"She's mine!" Maria shouted as she grabbed your other arm quickly and pulled you towards her with all her force, causing the man to loosen his grip on you "They are both mine!" Maria declared as she quickly shoved you behind her to shield you from anything, just as she has done with Natasha "I don't know what's the reason behind your actions and what your evil plan is, but you must leave right now!"
Lev, in a fraction of a second, lifted his arm and punched Maria in the face.
Natasha let out a horrified gasp, her hands instinctively flying to her mouth to cover it in order to muffle any sound.
"Mom!" You screamed, afraid that your mom was badly hurt
"It's okay, kid. Mom is okay." Maria reassured you as she looked towards the man "So, you want to fight?" She nodded, taking a deep breath "Alright then, that's what you'll get."
And just like that, Maria delivered a punch back towards the man and a fight started.
Natasha wanted to help her wife, but she also knew that you needed protection and reassurance as she took two steps backward, shielding you with her body.
Kicks and punches were thrown around from both sides and just as the fight was getting more violent, a blowing sound was heard and the door of their house was slammed open.
"S.H.I.E.L.D., get down!" A deep voice shouted as agents armed with weapons burst inside their home
"This won't end like this!" Lev shouted as he tried to fight his restraints, just as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s agents escorted him away
"We'll see about that, Lev Ilyin!" Maria shouted behind him before she quickly turned her attention back to her wife and daughter "You're okay." She said in a rushed but reassuring voice "Everything is okay now, my sweethearts." The brunette woman pulled you and your mama in her arms "No one's ever gonna be able to take you away from me, I'm here and I will always protect you, you both are mine and no one else's."
Your small whimpers broke both Maria and Natasha's hearts.
Natasha held you tightly in her arms "It's okay, baby, it's okay. You're okay." Natasha kissed the top of your head and you hid your face in her stomach
Your cries slowly turned into quiet sniffs as you basked in the protection you felt from both your mothers as Maria protectively held you and Natasha closer to her.
"You're both okay." Maria whispered "We're all okay."
Natasha raised her head and looked at her wife's face, a gasp escaping the redhead's lips.
"Masha, you're hurt!" Natasha worriedly looked at Maria's bruised face and raised her hand to touch her wife's cheek
Maria tenderly grabbed Natasha's hand, stopping her from touching her cheek.
"It's okay, my love." Maria reassured "It's nothing. I just need a little bit of care from you and our little princess and I'll be all healed in no time."
"I'm sorry." Natasha whispered on the verge of crying "I never expected to see him again."
"None of that!" Maria sternly declared "You have no fault in this. Okay?"
"But Maria..." Natasha began before sighing when she saw the look on Maria's face and the spy changed the subject "How did the agents show up just on time?"
"Well, I kind of activated the alarm I have on my bracelet and they were alerted when I realized who Lev was." Maria shrugged her shoulders as if it wasn't such a big deal
"You sneaky agent." Natasha chuckled, a gleam of proudness shining in her eyes
"Well, what can I say?" Maria tried to sniffle her laughter "I am prepared for any situation."
But just as they hugged again, the sweet moment of the small family of three was interrupted by Nick Fury, who walked inside the room holding a file in his hand.
"Agent Hill. Agent Romanoff." He nodded, greeting the women "I want to thank you for catching one of the most wanted criminals on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s list.
"Well, you know..." Maria turned annoyed towards Fury, angry that he disturbed their moment "He kind of messed up with my family. I had to do something about it."
"As a thanks, I have a very special mission for you both." Fury stated "I need your help and you have just proven to me that you're both fit for this mission."
Natasha sighed, rolling her eyes "I knew there was something about you showing up here, Nick, not just because of Lev Ilyin."
"You know me, Agent Romanoff." He stated unimpressed, extending his hand towards them, offering them the file "Ilyin is just another trophy to our collection."
The couple grabbed the file from his hand and Natasha opened it, looking at the name of their next target that was written on the first page with big, bold letters.
"Tony Stark?" Maria asked confused "Isn't he that annoying, reckless man who thinks he's smart just because he has money and who wears sunglasses at parties that take place at night?"
"You couldn't have described Stark better, Agent Hill." Fury nodded "That's why I need Agent Romanoff to infiltrate inside his company. You have all the information there. You're getting a new alias and your mission is to protect him as danger is too close to him right now. We need to take action or the next events will have a turn for the worst if we don't intervene in this." He explained before adding "For the whole globe, not just for Stark."
"Consider it done." Natasha nodded, accepting the mission
"I promise you both, you won't regret helping with this mission." Fury looked in between the two women
"We hope we won't, Sir." Maria squinted her eyes
And just like that, Fury turned around and left without adding any other word.
Maria peeked at the page where all the details about Natasha's new identity were and quickly scanned the page with her eyes, reading the important details.
"Well, I see he didn't think too much about a new name." Maria said teasingly "Come on! Natalie Rushman? He could do better than that. And you were supposed to be a model?" She chuckled "No way!"
"Oh, shut up." Natasha playfully smacked Maria's arm "Let's just leave the mission for another time, okay? I have enough time later to study this role."
"All right, Miss Rushman." Maria laughed, wrapping her arms around Natasha's shoulders while taking a gentle hold of Y/N's small hand "I think we had a movie to watch."
"Stitch!" You cheered excitedly
"Yeah, baby, Stitch!" Natasha lovingly smiled down at you as you all made your way back to the living room
That night, Maria lay awake in the bed she and her wife shared.
Natasha and their daughter were sound asleep as today's events drained them out of energy.
The brunette agent turned on her side with a sigh and scanned the faces of her two loves in the darkness.
"No one will ever be able to take you away from me." Maria whispered "I promise you both that we will forever be a family regardless of our past or of what other people might think about us."
Maria slowly leaned closer and kissed your cheek.
"You're so loved, Y/N." The brunette whispered in your ear "And so are you, Tasha." She also pressed a gentle kiss against Natasha's cheek "You're my blessings and I'm the luckiest woman in the world to have you both."
What happened today, helped not only Natasha and Maria, but also you, to realize how lucky you were to have each other and on how much love your small family was actually built on.
Maria vowed to fight until her last breath, just so she could keep you and Natasha safe, as her love for her girls knew no bounds.
And just as Stitch has said.
'Ohana means family. Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.'
And a true family is built on love, not blood.

A/N: THIS IS A MOM!MARIA STORY
Summary: Maria comes home tired from work and she lets the anger get the best of her
Maria deeply sighed as she looked at the clock on the wall.
It already has been three hours past the end of her supposed shift and the pile of files in front of her seemed to never end.
But she was hopeful that she could finish them faster and go back home to her 17-year-old daughter who was eagerly waiting for her mother to come and spend some time with her after work.
Maria loved her daughter and she wanted to spend as much time as she could with her.
Maria smiled.
Y/N was her entire world from the moment she entered in the commander's life.
Taking a deep breath, she refocused her attention on the files. Each document seemed to blur into the next as she tirelessly reviewed and organized them.
The minutes turned into hours as Maria worked diligently, determined to clear the growing pile.
And, as the night grew darker, the office became quiet, emptying out as the rest of her colleagues went home.
But Maria remained, determined to get through the stack of paperwork. She knew her daughter was waiting for her and she couldn't bear to disappoint her.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Maria placed the last file neatly into its proper folder. The desk was finally clear, and a sense of relief washed over her.
The weight that had been pressing on her shoulders lifted slightly, knowing that she could finally go home.
She stood up, eager to be able to finally relax.
She couldn't wait to take a shower and cuddle her daughter on the couch.
But her hopes were shattered when the door opened and none other than Nick Fury stepped inside with another pile of files in his hands and threw them on Maria's desk.
"Hill." He said "You have to finish these tonight."
Maria looked at Fury, a look of anger appearing on her face.
"You can't be serious." Maria chuckled "I finished my shift hours ago. I have to go home, Nick."
"Well, I don't care." Fury stated, unimpressed "I need these files finished tonight, and you are going to finish them. Are we clear?"
"No, we're not clear!" Maria threw her hands in the air, her voice raising "I am going to go home. I don't give a damn about your files."
Fury looked at Maria for a moment, then pointed again at the files "I want this finished by tonight. Are we clear?" He repeated
"No, we're not clear." Maria also repeated "I said I am going home."
"And I said you are going to finish these files." Fury protested "Now go back to work and bring these files to me when you're finished. You know where you'll find me."
And with that, Fury turned around to leave.
"Sir, wait!" Maria shouted after Fury
But he ignored her, slamming the door shut behind him, leaving Maria with no other option than to start again, working on another pile of files for him.
When Maria pulled her car in the driveway, the clock struck 2 a.m.
She tiredly got out of the car and dragged her feet up the stairs to her apartment, then she angrily fumbled with the keys in her hand and unlocked the door.
"Mom!" A cheerful voice greeted Maria, who was boiling with anger "Why did you come home so late?" The same voice said as Maria lifted her head and saw her daughter, who ran to her and hugged her
You hid your head in the crook of Maria's neck and held her closer.
You were so excited to see your mom after a long day of being away from her.
You missed the time when you both used to be almost inseparable when you were little. She used to take you with her at work everyday.
But now, ever since your schedule got busy with school and everything, her schedule got even busier. And even though she doesn't go out in the field so much on missions as she used to, she still gets lost all day in reports that she has to fill, locking herself in her office.
"I was so worried." You whispered softly, a small smile appearing on your face
But instead of the usual calm answer you always get from your mother, Maria suddenly pushed you away.
"I'm not really in the mood, kid." The commander said
You looked confused at Maria for a moment. She had never acted like this, no matter how stressed and exhausted she was. No matter how injured or angry she got, she always used to greet you with a smile.
Her rejection came out of nowhere, without an obvious reason behind it.
"Mom, are you okay? Did something happen at work?" You asked worriedly
It wasn't every day that Maria rejected her daughter's affection.
"I said that I'm not in the mood, kid!" Maria shouted
You looked struck at her for a second.
You couldn't believe that she had yelled at you.
She had never yelled at you.
"Mom, just tell me what happened." You tried to reason, taking a step closer to her
"I said just leave me alone!" Maria shouted again "I am tired and I don't want to talk to anybody right now. I just want to take a shower."
Maria turned around and tried to leave, but you were not going to let her leave without getting an answer from her.
You're just as stubborn as your mother.
"Mom!" You shouted after her "Wait!"
And from two quick steps, you caught up with her and put your hand on her shoulder, trying to turn her around and get an explanation from her.
But out of a sudden, Maria turned around with the speed of light, and the next thing she heard was a loud thud coming from her right side.
Moving away from the wall, you pulled your hand away from your head and saw the crimson color that now painted your fingers.
Maria's eyes widened when she saw the blood on your hand.
You hissed as you looked up at her, your eyes filling up with range.
"Baby..." Maria whispered, her voice trembling
"Are you out of your mind?" You shouted, stopping Maria from continuing her sentence
Again, you covered the back of your head with your hand as blood kept pooling out, a clear sign that you had hit your head too hard on the wall when Maria pushed you.
"I'm so sorry, kid." Maria whispered again, as tears gathered inside of her eyes "I didn't mean to." She apologized
"Oh, shut up!" You shouted at her "I haven't done anything to you. Why did you do this to me?"
Maria took a step forward and held her hands up towards you.
She wanted to help.
She wanted to take care of the wound she had caused.
But, no matter how much she wanted the earth to open up and swallow her, she knew she couldn't undo what had been done.
She was the only one to blame.
How could she have done this to her own daughter?
She felt like a monster, and the guilt was evident on her face.
"Sweetheart, please, let me help you." Maria pleaded, trying to approach you
Her hands trembled as she reached out for your head.
"Get away from me!" You shouted, pushing Maria out of your way with all the force you were able to muster "Don't you get it? I waited for you all day just to see you. I was so worried when you didn't show up right after your shift ended." You spitted out "I understand that you have work to do, that people are relying on your decisions to be able to successfully save others. I know how much you love your work, but I am important too!" You shouted "I am your daughter, God damn it!"
Maria looked at your face and saw your eyes shining with unshed tears just as much as hers.
She couldn't believe that she let anger get the best out of her.
What mother hurts her own child just because she is tired?
She didn't think in the moment she instinctively pushed you into that wall.
There was nothing, she could say or do to make everything better.
"Honey, look, I didn't mean to." She swallowed the lump in her throat "I don't know what got into me, I'm sorry, I promise this won't happen again, Y/N. I promise I'll try to make it better, just please let me help you." Maria pleaded
"Don't you even dare!" You shouted and pointed your finger toward her "You are not my mother, Maria. I hate you!"
Maria could only watch in shock as you ran past her toward your room, leaving her in the solitude of her living room apartment.
How could she have done this to you?
Questions kept floating in her mind as guilt quickly swept inside of her and spread throughout her mind and body.
She couldn't dare to even call herself a human after what she had done, let alone a mother.
"Damn you, Maria!" The brunette commander shouted as she hit her head with her fist
She deserved to be blamed after she intentionally hurt her own daughter without even thinking.
But she also knew that she couldn't let guilt trap her for too long.
She needed to act quickly and without a second thought, just as she pushed you into that wall, she ran towards your room.
"I'm going to make it better, Y/N. I'm going to make it up to you, baby. I promise." Maria said to herself as she turned in the direction of your bedroom's door
You sat on the edge of your bed, trying to stop the bleeding from the back of your head.
"Shit." You mumbled as the blood continued to pour out from the cut
Quietly, the door to your room opened, and Maria timidly stepped inside.
"Can I help?" She asked in a hushed voice, afraid to speak any louder
She was afraid her presence would only anger you more, and she knew she deserved it. Yet, she also wanted to make things right no matter what.
"I don't want to see you." You turned your head away from the door, dismissing her "Just go away, okay?"
Maria took tentative steps towards the side of your bed.
For a moment, she eyed the first aid kit sitting at your side and the cloth you were tightly holding pressed against the back of your head.
"I don't know what got into me, and before you say anything else, I know that what I've done was wrong." Your mother tried to show you that she knew she made a mistake
"Oh, really?" You chuckled "I would have never guessed you actually would realize your mistake."
Maria looked at her feet, guilt weighing heavy upon her.
"I know..." She sighed "I know that what I have done was wrong, but I was just lost in my head. I'm so sorry, sweetheart. I wanted so badly to come back home to you, and when Fury brought that second pile of files to work on, I just lost it. I don't even know how fast the time passed after that, because I was so angry that I just worked and worked, and I wasn't even able to think straight."
"Well, that doesn't mean you had to lash your anger out on me." You shouted hurt, sadness evident in your voice "I haven't done anything wrong to you."
"I never said you did, honey." Maria quickly replied, her voice filled with remorse "And I understand if you never want to talk to me again, and if you can't forgive me, that's alright. But please just know that hurting you means hurting me."
"Come on!" You smirked sarcastically, trying to hurt Maria with your words "Don't expect me to believe that. I never would have thought that you cared. Apparently, your work is more important to you than your own child."
"I never wanted to make you feel like work was more important to me than you, baby." Maria said sadly, finally understanding that letting work get the best out of her meant neglecting her child "I was just trying to give you a better life than I had."
A sudden sniff made you turn your head toward Maria and you silently watched her as she continued to talk.
"I grew up without a mother, my father never loved me, and I didn't want for you to feel hated and blamed for something that you didn't do, as I was. I never wanted for you to be forced to join a life you shouldn't have joined in the first place, just because no one loved you." Tears started streaming down Maria's face "I felt like I didn't have a place in this world. That was until you were born, and on the day that I held you in my arms for the first time, I swore to myself that I would never let you feel like something was missing. I tried my best to be the best mother I could for you, just so you could feel loved. And I know that your father was never present but I tried to fill the void left by his absence."
You took a deep breath to steady yourself before placing a hand on Maria's shoulder.
"I understand how much pain you're in, but please try to calm down first." You calmly stated "I forgive you, even though it may take time for me to fully heal. We all make mistakes, and forgiveness is an important part of moving forward. Let's work through this together, and in time, we will be able to heal and forgive ourselves. We won't forget but we can forgive." You let out a hum "How about you just take a break for a few days? Hmm? How does that sound?"
Maria looked up at you and nodded "You know, I couldn't have asked for a better daughter. I don't know what have I done to deserve such a wonderful child as you are."
"You know what?" You smiled "You have done a lot. Just give yourself some credit, okay?"
Maria nodded "You know, that break sounds great actually."
"Yeah?" You laughed relieved "Then, how about you help me patch up this wound and we could both cuddle up and get some sleep after? In the morning you can call Nick and tell him that you are gonna get a small break. How is that?"
"This sounds wonderful." Maria smiled but her smile didn't quite reach her ears as she cupped your face and kissed your forehead "Thank you so much, Y/N."
"Anytime, Mom." You smiled
"No." Fury protested from the other side of the phone after Maria told him that she was going to take a vacation
"I don't care." Maria quietly answered as she glanced at her sleeping daughter "I am going to spend some time with my daughter. Away from work. I think I have won my right to a small break."
"Agent Hill." Fury stated coldly "You are my right hand, without you nothing works here. We have some upcoming missions that can't afford to be delayed and I need you here for them."
"And my daughter needs me here for her." Maria reasoned "So I am going to be spending some quality time with my own child and you can find another minion to do your job while I'm away. Is that alright?"
"Hill, I said that..." Fury was cut off when Maria ended the call suddenly and threw her phone on your nightstand
She quietly laid down on the bed beside you, careful to not disturb, what she believed to be, your peaceful slumber.
"I love you so much, kid." She whispered lovingly as she moved a strand of hair away from your face and kissed your nose
You tried your best to hide the smile that threatened to form on your face after you heard that Maria was serious about her taking a break from work, afraid that your mother might catch on the fact that you weren't asleep.
You knew she needed that time away and you also knew that you deserved that time with your mother without any work or global threat to disturb the peaceful time you got to spend together.
Tonight's incident had served as a turning point in Maria's life, not just in her relationship with her daughter.
It helped her to realize that work, no matter how much time demanded from her, will never be more important than her own child and she will never let the anger get the best out of her and turn her against her own daughter without her will.
Maria had learned her lesson.

"Very good, soldier." A voice interrupted the brief silence that had fallen over the room "You have finally completed your training and you're now ready for a very special mission."
The man stepped forward, allowing himself to get a better view of the subject in front of him in the dimness of the room.
You lift your head, every breath coming out in labored breaths, as you took in the sight of the agent in front of you.
Today's training session has been more intense than any other one, demanding you to overuse your powers.
"And what that might be?" You breathed out, straightening your back
The agent smirked "Oh, I can guarantee that you'll love this mission." He sang
"Then I am ready for any mission the organization has for me." You replied, intrigued by all the mystery of this upcoming mission
"That's what we love to hear." The man declared "Then it's time for you to know the target of your mission."
The agent lifted his hand and held a file up, extending it for you to grab.
"You have all the details here." He declared
You curiously opened the file and peeked at the first page inside of it.
You swallowed the lump that formed in your throat unexpectedly but you tried to maintain your composure as the reality of your actions and the identity of your supposed target settled in.
"I can't." You mumbled, your voice betraying your inner turmoil, as you quickly passed the file back to your boss "This wasn't the deal."
The agent chuckled.
"This was very much the deal, young soldier." He coldly replied "As I can remember, this was the plan you asked our help for."
A shiver ran down your spine and the rhythm of your heartbeat quickened its pace.
"No." You hesitantly shook your head "I said I needed help to take my revenge on her." You explained "Not on all of them. Not on him."
"But why stop there?" The agent raised his eyebrow "Why would you want to take your revenge on just one person when you can take it on all of them?"
"Even if it was true, the others are still my family." You reasoned
"Your family?!" The agent shouted, immediately silencing you "Must I remind you that this so-called family of yours abandoned you, that they threw you away as if you were mere trash?"
"It doesn't matter, Sir." You held your ground "I am not going to kill the Avengers."
You blinked.
The agent grabbed you by your vest with such force that, for a second, you weren't able to process what was happening.
"Listen here, Y/N." The agent mockingly whispered your name "This is HYDRA, not that joke of an agency called S.H.I.E.L.D. you grew up in. Your mission is to kill all of the Avengers, starting with those traitors who are now called Natasha Romanoff and Bucky Barnes. Am I clear?"
"Sir..." You tried to conceal the fear you were feeling, failing miserably "Sir, this went too far. I'm sorry but I can't." You shook your head
A shout was heard and your body collided with the cold floor as the HYDRA agent pushed you with all his force.
"Y/N Yelena Romanova." The agent shouted "You have been ours long before Natalia Romanova decided to play pretend that she can be something she was never meant to be." He hissed "A mother."
You kept your mouth shut, too afraid of saying something that might anger the agent more as he continued speaking.
"She stole you from us, gave you another name, just for you to return on your own will to us and ask us for help to get your revenge on her." He reminded you "We took you in, trained you, gave you powers, all just so you could make her pay and now you dare to reject the opportunity to kill them?!"
"Sir, I just..." You tried to defend yourself
"Shut up!" He ordered "I am going to give you three hours to think about your answer just to show you that we can have some understanding towards our subjects and when I'll summon you back to me, I hope I won't regret giving you a chance."
You nodded "Yes, Sir!"
"Now disappear." He pointed with his head towards the door
You stood up from the ground and dusted your clothes before making your way to your assigned room.
-
~~~~~
Your heart pounded in your chest as you sniffled your fear away.
This was what you wanted after all.
This was what you needed.
You needed revenge and this was the only way you could achieve your goal.
Machines hummed and buzzed around you but you tried to not mind their noise as you were keeping your calm demeanor as a façade to protect yourself.
"Alright, subject." A man dressed in a white coat looked at you "Are you ready for this?"
You nodded, determination shining in your tired eyes "As ready as I can be. If this will help me prove to my mother that I can be useful too, then hurry up and do it."
"She's ready." Another man's voice was heard from somewhere inside the room but you couldn't tell exactly who spoke as the restrainents that kept you glued to the cold metallic table stoped you from looking
The man with the white coat pressed a few buttons and in a fraction of a second, pain flooded through your body as waves of electricity swirled around you, sending shocks flooding through your body.
Time seemed to stay still as you screamed out in agony out of pure reflex, your body spasming with each shockwave you received.
In that moment, buried memories resurfaced inside your mind.
You remembered the happier times and a pang of sadness weighed heavy on your heart.
But just as the good memories came to the front of your mind, so did the bad ones, reminding you of the true reason why you came to HYDRA for help.
The Avengers hate HYDRA and HYDRA hates the Avengers.
You hoped that by joining and serving the rival organization, you could make Natasha realize how wrong she was for treating you like she did.
You hoped to make them feel betrayed and rejected.
Just as you felt.
Darkness enveloped you, and your weakened body stopped spasming, but one thing remained clear as daylight to you.
You will take your revenge on your family for their betrayal by serving their greatest enemy, HYDRA.
~~~~~
You stared at the cement ceiling of your cell.
Your thirst for revenge was just as present as it was four months ago when you joined HYDRA.
The agent was right.
You wanted to kill the Avengers and make them pay for all of your suffering.
But still, one thing made you hesitate.
You sighed.
A memory of a smiling Tanya came to your mind and you remembered that she was as innocent as you were in this whole ordeal.
She deserved to grow up surrounded by the love of her parents as she has never done anything else other than loving you like her older sister who you actually were.
Then you thought of Bucky and the last memory you shared with him.
That fateful night, he had bought you a journal, hoping that it would help you manage your feelings better if you wrote them on the paper.
Comparing him to Natasha now, you realize that he was more of a parent to you than Natasha ever was.
How are you supposed to kill him?
Your door burst open and a security agent, who is in charge of maintaining order, walked inside your room.
"The boss calls you to him." He announced in a bored voice
You nodded "Tell him I am coming."
-
You stepped in the silence of the private office, allowing your senses to highen, as your eyes darted aimlessly around the room.
"I have been waiting for you." The voice of the man who had been in charge of your training was heard "Welcome!"
"I would thank you, Sir." You put your hands behind your back "But here doesn't exist such thing as being welcomed anywhere."
The man laughed.
"I see you learned the lesson." He smiled pleased "I hope you bring good news to me."
You kept quiet for a few moments, searching for a way to put your decision into words in such a way that HYDRA wouldn't decapitate you in a matter of seconds.
"So?" The man asked again, impatient
"Sir..." You began, taking your time to form every word that came out of your mouth "I am forever grateful for the chance you offered me and the resources you put at my disposal to achieve my ambitions."
The man slightly smiled, knowing that he had won.
"The Avengers have done me so many wrongdoings that I lost count of them." You continued "And after the time I have been granted to carefully choose the course I want for the next events to take, I came with the answer."
The man in front of you leaned backward in his chair, his body visibly relaxed as he waited for your final decision.
"I will..." You took a deep breath, steeling yourself "Not kill the Avengers, Sir. I am sorry, but I can't. They're my family no matter what."
The HYDRA agent shot up from his chair as his eyes went wide with shock.
"What did you say?!" He shouted, completely taken by surprise by your decision
"I said that I will not kill the Avengers." You repeated "I meant it when I said that everything has gone too far, Sir. Yes, I did want to take revenge on them, specifically my mother, but killing them was never my intention. All I wanted was to make them feel betrayed and hurt by becoming a HYDRA agent. Nothing more, nothing less."
"You foolish, lab rat!" The man sneered and pointed his finger at you "We created you! If you're here today it is all thanks to us! Our scientists were the ones who were in charge of creating you out of almost nothing! Now you dare defy us? You have the audacity to bite the hand that fed you?"
You looked around the room, trying to avoid the man's furious gaze.
"Please understand, Sir." You tried to reason "My heart and conscience don't let me murder the persons that saved me from hell and I realized that I made a mistake to return to the hell from where I've been rescued all these years ago."
The man calmly hummed "Hmm, so that's what you call it? A mistake?"
You braced yourself for what could happen next as you watched the man wave his hand at the shadows behind his back.
"I would call it a blessing." He said "You returned where you belong. To your true family and if your feelings stop you from taking action against your kidnappers, then we will help you gather the courage you need."
You shook your head, understanding what the agent's words meant.
"No..." You breathed out fearfully
But it was already too late.
-
Tanya sat on the carpet placed in the middle of the living room, playing with her toys, as she tried to distract herself from all the yelling that was happening in her surroundings.
"I am tired of your ignorance!" Bucky shouted at his wife, after he came back from another failed search mission where he tried to find you
"I haven't done anything wrong!" Natasha yelled back, her brain blocked in a phase of denial
"You did!" Bucky shouted "You did! You drove our child away! How could you do something like this, Natasha?!"
Natasha froze in place as her shoulders fell down.
She couldn't believe what she just heard Bucky say.
She refused to believe it.
"Natasha?" The woman asked hurt "Since when I am 'Natasha' for you?"
"Ever since Y/N went missing because of your recklessness and pride." Bucky shouted "My Natalia would have never done that to her own child. So, therefore, you are not my Natalia. You are not that girl I dreamed of having a family with."
"James, please." Natasha whispered, tears forming in her eyes "I am still the same Natalia you met so long ago."
Natasha reached to grab Bucky's hand but he pulled it away.
"Don't touch me." He said in a raised tone
Natasha sighed disappointed and nodded, pulling her hands back.
"You're mad." Natasha said "I get it."
"Mad is far from how I feel right now, Natasha." Bucky lowered his tone "I feel desperate because I am unable to find the child that has been entrusted in my protection and who knows where she is right now and what happened to her. She's just a child. You are the only one who failed to see this."
"James, just give me the chance to explain myself." Natasha pleaded "I beg you."
Bucky shook his head.
"I don't know what you have done to my Natalia but you are not the girl that made me remember how it feels to be human again." The man took a few steps backward before rushing out of the room, leaving his wife behind
Natasha fell on the couch, letting out a deep sigh, as she placed her head in her hands.
Tanya, that have been silently observing the argument between her parents, stood up, her toys forgotten on the soft carpet as she walked towards her mother.
"Mama?" Tanya cautiously called her mother
"What is it, baby?" Natasha sniffed, raising her head to look at her daughter
"Why hasn't Y/N come back yet?" Tanya innocently asked, still struggling to grasp the complexity of the situation "Is she still mad at us?"
Natasha thought about how to explain to a 5-year-old what was happening.
"I think she still is, Tatiana." Natasha lifted Tanya and sat her on her lap
"And Papa is sad because he couldn't find my sister, isn't he?" The little girl questioned sadly
Natasha guiltly nodded "Yes, sweetheart. That's why Mama and Papa are fighting."
Little Tanya looked down at her lap, her tiny eyebrows furrowing, as her mind tried to put her feelings into words.
Natasha gave Tanya time to speak at her own pace, not rushing her.
After a few minutes, Tanya looked up again at Natasha with eyes filled with tears.
"But Mama..." Tanya's high-pitched voice trembled "Why did you make Y/N go away? She is my sister. You never get mad at me cause I am your baby but Y/N is your baby too and you made her feel very sad. You always made her cry and I miss playing with her. She's the best big sister in the whole world."
A stray tear fell down Natasha's left cheek.
"Can you bring Y/N back home, Mama?" Tanya sniffed "Can you not get mad at her always? If Tanya is Mama's baby, then Y/N is Mama's baby too."
"I'm not sure, baby girl." Natasha let out a shaky breath, realizing her mistake "Mama messed up big time when she scolded Y/N/N."
"I know that Mama did bad." Tanya said "But Y/N is ours and she's my sister. She needs to live here with us."
"And she will, baby." Natasha said determined "I promise she will."
Tanya snuggled closer to Natasha's chest and sighed contently.
"I love you, Tanya." Natasha quietly declared
Tanya kissed Natasha's cheek before she quickly stood up and ran upstairs to her room.
Natasha stared at the open door that Tanya just walked out through, deeply lost in thoughts.
Her talk with Tanya had helped Natasha realize one important thing.
That Y/N was her baby no matter what and that she had made the biggest mistake in her life by doing what she did to Y/N.
And yet one question remains.
Where is Y/N?
-
"Soldat!" A voice said "Your orders are to kill the Avengers, our greatest enemies, and I want the heads of the traitors known as Natasha Romanoff and Bucky Barnes."
The man looked at the masked soldier he had created with pride, knowing that now, they would be invincible.
"Do you understand the command?" He asked sternly
"I am ready to comply." An emotionless voice replied
You stood tall, the black suit and gray vest you were wearing appeared even darker in the shadows of the private office as the mask that covered more than half of your face, perfectly concealed your identity.
The man smirked and pointed with his head towards the door.
You turned around and started walking.
Your mission?
To kill the Avengers.

Song: SexyBack by Justin Timberlake
"Hey, guys!" You shouted as you speed walked inside the living room "Have you seen my mom?"
The team turned their heads towards you and you saw the same look of confusion, that was etched onto your face, on their faces.
"We haven't seen her since breakfast." Steve shrugged confused "Why?"
"Do you think she might be out with someone?" You asked, looking from one person to the other "I can't find her anywhere."
"Now that you mention it..." Clint began, looking up at you "We haven't seen Hill in a while as well."
"Are they together?" Peter, your boyfriend, innocently voiced his questions "Like, in a relationship?"
"Maria?" You breathed out with a sarcastic chuckle "And my mom? Ain't no way, Pete. Maria is my godmother, for God's sake. She and Mama can't be together."
"Besides..." Tony smirked mischievously "I don't think Romanoff is into girls."
"I agree with Tony on this one." Bucky mumbled with his mouth full as he was eating a plum
"Papa." You sighed disappointed "Just because you used to bang Mama 20 years ago that doesn't mean she's still into men."
"Don't speak to your father like this!" Steve gasped "That's rude and unpolite."
"Oh, you know what, Uncle Steve?" You started walking towards him "You can suck-"
You stopped in your tracks when your ears suddenly picked up on a sound that was coming from somewhere in the compound and it was becoming louder and louder as the silence in the room grew.
'I'm bringin' sexy back.'
"Do y'all hear what I hear?" You asked confused, turning around on your heels toward the door
'Yeah!'
"Yeah." Everyone inside the room repeated as some of them nodded and the others stood up from their place
'Them other boys don't know how to act.'
"Is that a song?" Peter asked confused, making his way toward you
'Yeah!'
"I think so." You furrowed your eyebrows
'I think it's special, what's behind your back.'
"Come on." Bucky stood up from the couch "We have to see from where this is coming."
'Yeah!'
"Look, Mr. Stark!" Peter cheered excitedly "The song is agreeing with us."
Tony sighed and shook his head.
"You're unbelievable, Peter." Tony put his head in his hand
'So turn around and I'll pick up the slack.'
You grabbed your boyfriend's hand and hurriedly started to drag him upstairs.
'Take 'em to the bridge.'
A long line of people who resided in the compound were trailing behind you as you all walked up the stairs, the song becoming louder and clearer with each step you took.
'Dirty babe.'
"Is this coming from-?" You gasped, stopping in front of the door from where the music was heard
'You see these shackles baby, I'm your slave.'
"Natasha's room?!" Clint gasped and a smirk formed on his face
"I'm going in." You shook your head with a determined look on your face
'I'll let you whip me, if I misbehave.'
"Y/N, no!" Various people shouted
But it was already too late.
You opened the door with the speed of light and froze in place when you saw what was happening inside.
'It's just that no one makes me feel this way.'
The music kept blasting but it was all muffled in your ears as your brain tried to process what was happening in front of your eyes.
A pantless Natasha was lying handcuffed on the bed with her head thrown back, her eyes closed and her back arched as a shirtless Maria had her head in between Natasha's legs, working her magic.
"Is she..." Wanda, who appeared out of nowhere beside you, mumbled shocked
"Eating her out?" Bucky finished the sentence intrigued
"It seems so." Tony nodded, completely fascinated by the sight in front of him
"Mama?!" You shouted confused "What the fuck?!"
It was just then that the two women noticed the commotion that came from the doorway and turned their heads toward the sound.
The music suddenly stopped as both Natasha and Maria froze in their tracks.
A heavy silence settled over the room as you stared at your mother and godmother and they stared right back at you.
"Ummm..." Peter quietly began "Y/N?"
"Aunt Maria?" Your trembling voice managed to say "Mama?"
"Baby?" Natasha breathed out shocked
"Kiddo?" Maria mumbled, pulling her head back a few inches
"So this is what they meant by 'a family that sticks together.'?" You chuckled but your brain was still in shock "I'm not sure I wanted this level of stickiness!"
"Baby, we can explain." Natasha rushed to sit up, forgetting that she was handcuffed to the bed
"Well, I've heard of bringing sexy back, but I didn't realize it included bringing sexy back into the family photos!" Tony joked, completely entertained by the family drama that was about to unfold
"Well, I guess I can strike 'awkward family reunions' off my bucket list now!" Clint sighed, shaking his head while making a mental note to tell Laura all about this later
"Looks like our family tree has some interesting branches growing." Peter pointed out, his eyebrows shooting into his hairline
"I guess this means I should look forward to some really unforgettable family holiday cards." Bucky nodded, looking at Steve "Move over, Santa, it's time for some steamy mistletoe action!"
"Oh my gosh!" Tony spoke again, trying to make the situation as embarrassing as it possibly could be "I guess the 'god' in godmother must stand for 'goddess of scandal'!"
"Kid, look." Maria quickly sat up on her knees and covered Natasha's lower body with her shirt "It's not what it looks like."
"I get everything else." You mumbled, staring wide-eyed at the two women "But, why the shackles though?" You pointed towards the shackles that were keeping your mother handcuffed to the bed "Is that a kink?"
"And the music?" Steve pointed out
"Was it really necessary?" You continued
Both your mother and godmother opened their mouth to defend themselves but before they could, a sudden rush of sickness built up inside your stomach and you turned around towards your room that was right next to Natasha's.
"I can't!" You shouted, wrapping an arm around your stomach, before darting to your room with Peter hot on your heels
"F.R.I.D.A.Y.?" Tony laughed excited "I hope you recorded all of that." He told the A.I. before being interrupted by Natasha
Natasha let out a string of angrily mumbled Russian words as worry was written all over her face.
"What did she say?" Steve asked confused, pointing to Natasha with his finger
"Profanities." Bucky explained unphased, crossing his arms over his chest
"Sweetheart!" Natasha shouted desperately as she pulled at her restraints, trying to sit up "Y/N!"
"Kid!" Maria quickly sat up on her feet as she focused on following everybody else to your room
But there was one tiny detail that Maria had forgotten as she ran out of Natasha's bedroom.
"Maria!" Natasha screamed, catching the attention of the brunette commander who quickly ran back inside the room
"Sorry, babe." Maria gave the redhead a sheepish smile
"Open these!" Natasha shouted, pulling again at the handcuffs
Maria rushed forward, trying to open the shackles around Natasha's wrists but it took Maria three failed attempts to do so, as the key kept falling out of her hands.
"I told you we should have locked the door." Maria put her T-shirt on
"Where are my fucking pants?!" Natasha shouted back as she frantically looked around the room before spotting her jeans on the floor
"We messed up big time." Maria said, helping Natasha put her jeans on
"I'm going to kill you." Natasha threatened through gritted teeth, slapping Maria's arm before rushing to your room
"Hey!" Maria shouted offended, running after Natasha "You have to admit I did a pretty good job before we were interrupted."
Natasha rolled her eyes as she chose to ignore Maria's comment.
"I'm still hungry though if you're up for a second round later." Maria shrugged
"I need more!" You shouted from the top of your lungs
"Y/N, this is the third bar of soap you used in the past 10 minutes." Peter worriedly looked at you as you were bent over the sink in your bathroom "I'm not going to give you a fourth one."
"Baby, open the door!" Natasha desperately knocked on the locked door of your bathroom
"Y/N, give us a chance to explain ourselves, please." Maria pleaded from beside Natasha
"My love, please!" Natasha kept pleading, her eyes full of tears "Open the door."
"You can't keep washing your eyes with soap, Y/N." Peter tried to reason with you "It's not going to help."
"I need to wash away that awful image from my eyes, Peter." You explained, splashing your face with ice-cold water from the sink "I need to delete what I saw from my mind."
"Honey, please!" Natasha's voice said from the other side of the door
"Why the song, huh?!" You cried out "Why this song?!"
"Baby, we made a mistake." Natasha answered your question "We're sorry!"
"What about the shackles?" You shouted
"That was your mother's idea!" Maria shouted back, before getting a slap on the back of her head from Natasha
"Don't listen to her, baby." Natasha said "Please, just open this door and let's talk from girl to girl, from mother to daughter."
"And godmother." Maria jumped in, gaining another slap from Natasha
"You're such an idiot!" Natasha told Maria
"But I'm your idiot." Maria pointed out, leaning in to kiss Natasha
"Fair point." Natasha smiled, ready to receive Maria's kiss when she suddenly pulled back as she heard your scream
"Ahhhh..." You screamed, trying to stop whatever was happening on the other side of the door between Natasha and Maria "My mother and my godmother?! Banging each other on music?! No way!" You cried out
"You didn't say the same when we did it the first time on music." Peter smirked, hopping to receive a positive reaction from you
"Don't you dare mention that in front of my mother!" You threatened
"You did what?!" Natasha gasped "Peter, you're dead!"
"Miss Romanoff, it was just once, I swear." Peter defended himself
"You and my little girl can't do that yet! You're still kids!" Natasha sounded angry now "I'm going to take this door down."
"Honey, no!" You heard Maria scream
Maybe this wasn't the way you planned to spend your Saturday afternoon and, for sure, it wasn't the way you wanted to find out that your godmother was banging your mother, but here you were.
This day will forever remain in your family's history as a day of great embarrassment and hilarious jokes.
The day when you, unintentionally, discovered that your Aunt Maria and your Mama were eating each other's "cheerios" for pleasure.

It was early in the morning when you turned around on your other side in sleep, allowing a soft sigh to escape your lips.
The compound was enveloped in silence as everyone was peacefully sleeping.
Everyone except one person.
"Ah, fuck!" A loud groan was heard as the window of your bedroom swung open
"What in Fury's name?" You mumbled confused, angry that your peaceful slumber had been disturbed
You slightly raised your head and looked in the direction of the sound and there, you found your girlfriend, clinging to her arm.
"Hi, honey!" Kate greeted you, supporting her side to the wall she bumped into earlier
"Katie, what are you doing here?" You asked, sitting up, now fully awake
"I just came to visit my girlfriend." Kate nodded as if to convince herself of what she was saying "Is that illegal?"
"Not when it's 5:34 a.m. in the morning." You looked at the clock on your nightstand then back at Kate.
"Is that early?" Kate chuckled nervously "Damn, I haven't even noticed. I must have really missed you."
"Come and sit!" You ordered your girlfriend and she obediently complied with your orders
When Kate sat down on the edge of your bed, your eyes went wide when you noticed what was wrong with our girlfriend.
"Katherine Elizabeth Bishop!" You gasped, worry visible on your face, as you quickly stood up
"Y/N Rosalinda Elisabeth Yelena Valentina Ivanova Alina Svetlana Mikhailovna Aleksandra Sofia Romanoff-Hill." Kate stated unimpressed without stuttering in the slightest
"Wow..." You stopped in your tracks for a moment "Was it necessary?"
"You say my full name, I say your full name." Kate determinately stated "Isn't this how it works?"
"I know, but still..." You shrugged defeated
"Did your parents hated you that much when you were born?" Kate asked
"No." You walked towards one side of the room and grabbed a first aid kit "Why?"
"Just asking." Kate shook her head "Curiosity, you know. But, given your name, I wouldn't agree with you."
"Oh, go fuck yourself, Bishop." You chuckled, sniffing a laugh away, as you began to tend to the wound on Kate's arm
"Why don't you do it yourself?" Kate smirked "Coward!"
"First the wound." You smirked back, staring to patch up your girlfriend "Now what has actually happened?"
"I may or may have not been shot in the arm with an arrow on my mission last night." Kate avoided eye contact
"Katie..." You sighed, allowing your shoulders to fall
"I'm sorry." The girl winced when the disinfectant made contact with her wound "I didn't know where to go so I came here."
You smiled and cupped Kate's cheek with your hand.
"I am so glad you felt safe enough to come here first." You quickly pecked her lips "I am just worried that, one day, you would badly get hurt and won't be able to make it back here in time."
"Hey..." Kate whispered, moving a strand of hair away from your face, her eyes full of adoration "I will always come back to you, sweetheart. I love you too much not to do so."
"You better!" You chuckled tearfully "And I love you too."
Kate leaned closer and kissed you as you melted into her touch.
It was a much-needed kiss and your hands froze in the middle of the process of wrapping a bandage around your girlfriend's injured arm.
-
The door of your room was silently pushed open and a loud gasp interrupted the make-out session between you and your lover.
"Y/N!" Natasha gasped, taking in the sight before her
"Mama!" You shouted, your eyes going wide
"Kid?" Maria said confused
"Mom?" You asked back
"What is happening here?" Natasha yelled, walking over to you and Kate with Maria hot on her heels
"Uhm... Nothing?" Kate spoke unsure as she realized you both had been caught red-handed
You and she have indeed been dating for over a year now, but given everything that happened with the snap and the wars, you both chose to keep your relationship a secret until the time was right.
Natasha and Maria, that have disappeared during the snap, were shocked to see their little girl, because in their eyes you were still a baby, kissing someone.
"Kate, what are you doing with our daughter?" Natasha was, again, the one to ask as Maria was too stunned to speak
"We were just talking, Mrs. Romanoff-Hill." Kate raised her hands in defence "I swear."
"About what?" Natasha raised her eyebrow "About how to hide from us that you two are dating?"
"What are you two even doing here at this hour?" You looked at your mothers, also raising your eyebrow, mimicking Natasha's gesture
"It's 6:30 a.m." Natasha explained "We always come to check on you first thing in the morning when we wake up and look what we discovered this morning."
"If it makes it better, we weren't hiding." Kate tried to reason
"You shut up, Kate Bishop." Natasha snapped at Kate and the girl could swear that it was as if she heard Yelena's voice "Does Clint know about this?"
"Why are you acting like he's my father?" Kate raised her shoulders in confusion
"Babe, he kind of is." You scrunched your face, silently agreeing with Natasha
"Oh, fuck me." Kate sighed in defeat, looking down at the floor
"I would, but not with my moms in here." You whispered, hoping that your parents didn't hear
Unfortunately for you, Natasha's ears can pick up even on the faintest of sounds and your words resonated loud and clear in her mind.
"No, you wouldn't!" Natasha protested "You barely turned 16 a week ago!"
"Mama, I turned 24 a week ago." You said cautiously "Not 16. And Kate is 23. We are not kids anymore. I had just turned 16 when you and Mom were dusted."
"Is that so?" Natasha crossed her arms over her chest "Then I guess it's finally the time for 'the birds and the bees' talk."
"More like, 'the birds and the birds' talk." Maria spoke for the first time, her eyes staring into the distance "Cause there's no bee in here to sting if you know what I mean."
Maria quickly came back to her senses when Natasha slapped the back of her wife's head full force.
"You're an idiot, Hill!" Natasha shouted
Maria rubbed the back of her head, with tears in her eyes, and winced "I'm trying. Okay?"
"Remind me why I married you?" Natasha shook her head
"At this point, even I ask myself the same thing." Maria kept rubbing her head
-
After an entire hour where Natasha sat down on a chair in front of you and your girlfriend, explaining about safe intimate ways of having "fun" with each other, the redhead let out a deep breath and looked up at Maria who sat behind her, the brunette commander's hands resting on Natasha's shoulders.
"We want to make one thing clear, Kate." Natasha said, turning her attention from Maria to Kate "You have to make sure that our little Y/N stays out of harm's way."
"And away from your little hero life." Maria added, quietly growling at Kate
You and Kate shared a confused look when you noticed Maria's behavior but, at the same time, tried to hide the amused looks on your faces.
"You are not allowed to hurt her." Maria finished her sentence
"Or else, we'll be coming for you and we will find you and boil you to your death." Natasha threatened
"Then we will cut you up in pieces and fry you on the grill as if you were Steve's Saturday barbeque." Maria squinted her eyes, her voice cold
A shiver ran down Kate's spine and she gulped, feeling the knot in her throat tightening.
"Yes, Mrs. Romanoff-Hill and Mrs. Romanoff-Hill." Kate managed to choke out, her face filled with terror
"Great!" Natasha shouted in a cheerful tone as if nothing had happened "Now we'll let you two love birds have some private time."
"But we will keep an eye on you from now on." Maria pointed her finger toward you and Kate
And with that, Natasha dragged Maria out of the room by her hand.
-
When the door slammed closed behind the older couple, Kate and you looked into each other's eyes.
"They were joking, didn't they?" Kate chuckled, trying to hide the fear she was feeling
"I doubt they are." You dragged out "But they're my moms. They are capable of anything, I wouldn't worry too much about them. They're harmless."
Kate shivered out of fear, not fully agreeing with your statement about the commander and the spy being harmless but she had no other choice than to say you are right.
After all, Natasha and Maria had reacted so much better than any of you expected upon finding out about your secret relationship and the fact that Kate had sneaked into the compound injured after a mission.
Kate can only hope that Natasha and Maria were joking.
