“Cooper!” You shirked as the eldest Barton wrapped his arms around you. It was the perfect setup for Nate to tag you and declare you were it. Cooper was quick to let you go and run off. You huffed, wiped the sweat off your forehead, and chased after him. Being back at the Barton homestead was refreshing. You were worried about being there without the buffer of Kate or Yelena, but when you hugged Laura and Clint, you fell into an easy routine. You were quick to jump into a game with the three Barton kids. Nate decided on a game of tag, which you’ve never played, and watched the other kids. Their laughter and smiles made you jealous. Now, it was your laughter that echoed on the Barton’s land while you chased after Cooper. He was fast, but you were faster, especially with the training Maria put you through. You tagged him with ease. The momentum caused you to tag him a little hard, and he fell to the ground. Cooper flipped onto his back. “Oops,” you said. “Sorry.” His chest was heaving, and he used his forearm to block out the sun.
“I forgot,” he took a deep breath and let it out. “I forgot Dad said you were training with Maria and Yelena. This game is unfair.” You giggled and held out your hand to help him, but he refused and stood up alone. There were pieces of grass in his hair.
“Blame it on Nate then,” you smiled. “This was his ideal.” He shook his hair to remove the grass and put his arm over your shoulders.
“You are different than the last time you were here,” you kicked a rock on the ground and nodded. You were different, but it was good. Sometimes, you liked to sit and compare who you were when Natasha found you to who you are now. You felt stronger, more confident in your ability, and happier to be alive. You were in a dark mindset when you first lived on the streets. The crushing guilt of what happened to your parents lay heavy on your chest. The scars left by your father made you feel ugly. You were desperate to feel anything but pain. “It’s a good different,” Cooper continued. “It seems like I’m seeing the real you.”
“Yeah,” you said. “I feel free.”
“Good. Now,” he smiled. “Want to help me tag Nat?”
“Oh, 100%”

Natasha loved Iowa. Every time she visited the Barton Homestead, she found another reason to love this place. This beautiful place she was lucky to call a second home. This time, it was Y/n’s laughter. The sound seemed to travel for miles and miles. It was unguarded, light, and beautiful. She sipped on some lemonade Laura made and sat on the porch. It’s the perfect spot to watch the Barton kids and her own. Her kid. The blue-eyed, terrified teen she met at Annie’s was her and Wanda’s. Finally, it would be a few more weeks as the courts proceed with the paperwork. The lawyers Tony hired said the process would be smooth sailing, especially with the lack of documentation her biological parents failed to submit. They did advise that a court appearance may be necessary, but she wasn’t worried about that. Natasha didn’t need a judge to declare Y/n as her daughter. She was without the legal bullshit.
“It’s like a complete 180 with her,” Clint said. “I know you said she’s opened up more, but I almost had a heart attack when she hugged me,” Natasha chuckled.
“You are so dramatic,” Laura said. She and Wanda were sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch. “She gives perfect hugs. I was surprised by that.” Natasha glanced over her shoulder to see Wanda smile.
“She does, and she puts her whole body into it,” there were moments that took Natasha by surprise—these moments made her heart flutter and her stomach drop as she fell more in love with Wanda. Watching her care so intensely for the young girl repeatedly made her fall in love with her.
“Cooper!” The sound of Y/n’s shirk brought her back to the game of tag. The eldest Barton wrapped his arms around her so Nate could easily tag her.
“I think that’s my cue to start dinner,” Laura said.
“I’ll help you,” Wanda followed her into the house. Natasha leaned back on her hands and watched Y/n chase down Cooper until Clint gently slapped her leg.
“The way you look at Wanda makes me sick. Like your eyes turn into hearts,” Natasha rolled her eyes. “I didn’t know that was possible.”
“Shut up,” she mumbled, feeling her cheeks flush. “Now you know how Maria and I felt all those years watching you pin over Laura,” she flicked the man’s forehead. “Now that was disgusting.”
“You’re an asshole,” the Black Widow shrugged. Clint glanced at the house to make sure no one was around. “When are you going to ask her to marry you?” The question, though simple, caused the Black Widow to freeze as if someone injected ice through her veins. “I mean, come on, Nat, you guys have a kid together, and I know you’ve been looking at properties away from the city. What’s stopping you?” Again, it was a simple question, but it scared her. They had years together and faced more dangers than an average couple would face. Maybe it was fear that she would say no. Rationally, Natasha knew that was ridiculous, but she held back.
“I don’t know,” she ran her hand through her head. She was on the fence about dying it again. “What if she says no?” Her voice was so soft and sounded so small that she barely recognized it. It sounded stupid to say aloud, and she expected Clint to laugh, but he didn’t. Instead, he placed a hand on her shoulder; there was a look of understanding in his eyes.
“Then I’ll slap her,” he deadpanned. “Witchy powers or not, you were my friend first,” the mental image of Clint trying to fight Wanda pulled a laugh out of the Black Widow. “I know this won’t ease your anxiety overnight, but she won’t say. Hell, whoever is patient enough to put up with your stubborn ass deserves the biggest diamond,” Natasha punched him on the shoulder.
When the Sokovian first joined the team, Natasha only interacted with her during training. She was still shaken up by what she was forced to relive. A part of her wanted never to trust Wanda again. She was too dangerous and unpredictable, and her powers were out of control. One night, Natasha made her way to the roof of the compound; she needed fresh air to clear her mind from the nightmare. It seemed that nightmares weren’t only affecting her. Wanda was up there, wrapped in a blanket, and her feet dangled off the roof’s edge. Natasha could have left, never walked over to her, and started a conversation, but she sat beside her. They talked about nothing and everything until the sun came up.
Still, she kept her feelings for her to herself, never crossing that line from friends to something more. Everything came unrevealing until Ross went to the compound and threatened Wanda’s safety. The fear of losing Wanda pushed her to tell her everything. It was messy; she stumbled over her words, and Wanda kissed her to force her to stop talking.
“Hi,” Y/n’s sudden appearance broke her out of her thoughts. The girl’s face was bright red from running around, beads of sweat dripped down her forehead, but the smile on her face was the best part.
“Hi, sweetheart. Are you having fun?” She nodded her head.
“I am,” she said. “I was wondering if you knew when dinner would be ready or if I could grab a snack. I’m a little hungry,” she scratched her head awkwardly. Natasha smiled. It was a nice change of pace, especially when she knew how avoidant the teen was asking for help, even food.
“Laura and Wanda are in the kitchen right now, but I bet if you go in there and ask, they’ll give you something small,” the young girl said, bouncing on her feet and hugging Natasha. No matter how many hugs Natasha received from the teen, they’ll always be special. Wanda was right. She hugged with her whole body. It ended when Natasha felt a hand on her back, and the girl jumped out of her arms.
“Tag,” she spun around to see Cooper running off. “You’re it, Nat!” The Black Widow turned back to face Y/n, who was backing away with a smile.
“Your senses could use some work, all Mighty Black Widow,” she teased. It took a moment for Natasha’s brain to catch up and piece together what happened. She was set up, and Y/n was the bait. She was never tagged in all her years of playing tag with the Bartons. Some may say it was ridiculous, but she had a reputation to protect.
“Get back here, you traitor!” Natasha jumped up and raced after the teen. Maria was doing a great job at training her. She was fast, but Natasha was the Black Widow she wouldn’t lose to a kid. One final sprint, she trapped the girl in a hug. “That was smart,” Natasha admitted. “Using a hug to distract me, whose idea was that?” She began to tickle her sides.
“M-mine!” The teen laughed. “Nat, stop! Stop!” Natasha almost refused, loving the sound of her laughter, but she did. Y/n fell to the ground, rolling onto her back. “You are fast.”
“I got a few years on you, kid,” she held out her hand, and Y/n took it to stand up. “Keep training, and you’ll be faster than me.” She smiled and leaned against Natasha.
“I like it here,” she said.
“Yeah?” The teen nodded. “Would you like a house like the Barton’s one day?” Natasha watched her look around the land.
“Maybe one day. I like living in the tower. Everyone is there, you know?” Natasha nodded. She understood that. Her sister and the rest of the team that became her family were there. It would be hard not to see them all the time.
*
You woke up with a start. It felt like you were falling, and you woke up before you hit the ground. You were having a sleepover with Lila, sleeping on an air mattress on her floor. Slowly, you sat up and tried not to wake her as you stood up and left her room. You were thirsty, but your legs and arms shook as you walked down the stairs and into the kitchen. But the downstairs wasn’t empty; Natasha was sitting at the counter with a laptop and a glass of whiskey. She took her eyes off the screen when she heard you. “Hey, dorogoy, are you okay?” Were you shaking that much that she could notice?
“Uh yeah,” you cleared your throat. “I had a weird dream and came down for some water.”
“Here sit. I’ll grab you some,” you nodded and sat in the empty seat next to hers. It was hard not to glance at what she was looking at on her computer. Rings. Engagement rings. Your eyes widened quickly, and you looked forward. Natasha placed a glass of water and a chocolate chip cookie before you. “Do you want to talk about your dream?” You downed the glass of water and waited for Natasha to refill it.
“I don’t remember it,” you whispered, picking at the cookie. “I just felt like I was falling and woke up before hitting the ground.” You glanced at Natasha; her green eyes, full of kindness and understanding, were staring at you. “Do you have nightmares?” She nodded, gently taking your hand in hers. You liked the feeling of them, rough and covered in callouses.
“I do,” she admitted. “They aren’t as frequent, but every now and again, one will sneak up on me.”
“How do you get them to stop?” You questioned, your voice cracked at the end of the sentence.
“Time,” Natasha answered. “It’s a cliche line, but as time passes, we are able to cope with the things we did in our past - the people we’ve hurt and those who’ve hurt us,” Time. It was always time. Even Yelena said the same thing to you. But you were tired of your past hurting you. You wanted it to stop. Sighing, you sat back in the chair and glanced at the computer again.
“Are you going to ask Wanda to marry you?” The sudden change in conversation caused Natasha’s eyes to widen. “I mean, unless you have another girlfriend, I don’t know about,” a smile tugged at her lips. “I’m guessing the rings you are looking at are for her.” The Black Widow slowly nodded. A warm feeling filled your body and pushed away the dark thoughts of your nightmare. “Oh my god!” you slammed your hands down on the countertop and cringed slightly at the noise. “When are you going to ask her? Holy shit! This is so exciting!” You were vibrating in your seat. Natasha laughed.
“I haven’t even picked out a ring yet.”
“Can I help?” You asked slowly. Natasha smiled but nodded her head. It was how you found yourself next to Natasha on the couch, scrolling through various ring websites. None stood out to you. You hadn’t known Wanda for long, but a few things came to mind when you thought about her. She wasn’t one to wear a lot of jewelry so that she might prefer something on the smaller side. You knew she cared deeply about her family and the team. Wanda was kind, caring, and compassionate. Maybe she would like something that represents all those things.
“Wait,” you said suddenly. “Go back up.” Natasha scrolled up, and you pointed to a diamond ring. It was a three-stone diamond engagement ring. The description said that the two smaller pear-shaped diamonds framed the center gem. The center diamond was shaped like a square, but the website called it a Princess Diamond. You weren’t sure why it was called that, but you weren’t a professional. “I like that one.”
“Yeah? Why is that?” Natasha questioned. Your head rested on her shoulder, and you shrugged. You weren’t sure why you were drawn to it.
“I don’t know,” you said. “But there are three diamonds and three of us, so I think that’s why I like it.”
*
Now it was your turn to be up at night with Natasha’s laptop and the missing people’s name folder. It was another long day with the Bartons, playing Just Dance with Lila and a session of archer practice with Clint. However, your mind had yet to stop thinking about these people. So you brought the notebook you got from Lucia’s and wanted to write down everything you could find on them then…well, you weren’t sure. That part of the plan was still to be determined. There wasn’t much on them. No one cared to keep a record of who these people were after they became homeless.
But you found an article from 2012 published a few months after the Battle of New York. The article mentioned Ava Davis and Noah Rodriquez - childhood best friends turned business partners. They opened a fitness center that created personalized plans tailored to each individual’s needs. However, when Loki invaded the city, they lost everything. The fitness center was destroyed in the fight, and Ava’s girlfriend (recently turned fiance) was killed. They fell off the map until Lucia reported them missing.
You chewed on the end of your pen as you stared at the article and the summary you wrote. It was sad; your heart hurt for them. The city was in shambles after the battle; businesses were destroyed, and countless lives were lost. You remembered your father talking about it, saying the Avengers were working with the Devil. Sighing, you took a sip of the tea you made. It was no longer warm. “What are you doing up?” You yelped at the sudden voice. “Oops, sorry,” Clint laughed and poured himself a cup of coffee from the cold pot.
“You,” you placed a hand over your heart. “You gave me a heart attack.” You were taking a few deep breaths to calm the organ beating against your ribs.
“It’s my house. I didn’t expect to see you up!” He defended. That was fair, but you shrugged and returned to typing on the computer. “So what are you doing at this hour? You need sleep.” You were leaving tomorrow, which made you sad. But telling Clint wouldn’t hurt, right? Maybe.
“Someone I used to know before I moved into the tower told me a few people have missing people who have lived on the streets,” you clarified. “She’s reported it to the police, but they don’t care about people like me,” you saw a flash of anger pass through Clint’s eyes. “So I thought I’d use Avenger resources to find them.”
“Does the team know about this case you are working on?” You nodded.
“Tony got me the list of names from NYPD, and I told Pepper.”
“Any luck?” He moved around the counter and sat down next to you.
“Nothing on current whereabouts. It’s not like we can get our hands on cellphones, so tracking them through cellphone towers is out of the question,” you bite the end of your pen. “I thought about using facial recognition through Overwatch when I get back,” you looked at Clint, and he was looking at you. You couldn’t place the emotion on his face. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
“You are just really good at this,” he said. “I’m just surprised.” You shrugged.
“I read a lot,” you mumbled. “I like a good crime novel.” Clint smiled. “So, do you have any ideas?” He pulled the file before him and flipped through the few pages.
“Well, if you can’t find them now, find the connection in their pass. If you believe these people are being taken, the answer is there. Find the connection between the individuals, which may lead you to who took them,” Clint explained.
“Find the connection,” you repeated. “Thank you! I’ll see what I can find.”
“Be careful,” he said, finishing his drink. “Don’t search for these people by yourself if it comes to that,” you nodded. “I’m serious,” he stood up and cleaned the mug he used. “What you are doing is honorable, but it can turn dangerous, and the last thing I need is an angry Black Widow and Scarlet Witch to come knocking on my door because you got hurt from my advice.” You laughed.
“I promise,” you said. “If I get a lead, I’ll hand it to the professionals.” He ruffled your hair.
“Smart kid. Get some sleep. From what I’ve heard, you have a bus for a couple of days,” you frowned. Natasha and Wanda refused to tell you the rest of the plans for the trip. “Night kiddo.”
“Night, Clint, and thank you again,” he gave you a salute and walked in the direction of his room. Find the connection. Find the connection. You began searching for other news articles, employment records, and rental leases. Every name you researched sent you down a rabbit hole that you followed. They were all different, all coming from different walks of life. One person spent some time in Lagos. Another was a teacher from California. But the one thing they had in common was the Avengers destroyed their livelihood. They lost businesses, family members, and loved ones in battles that the Avengers fought in. What was going on?
*
Saying goodbye to the Bartons was more complicated the second time than the first. A part of you was reluctant to leave, but you left with Cooper and Lila’s phone number in the new phone you got as a birthday present and a promise to text them all the time. So you loaded back onto the small jet and waved goodbye to them through the window. When you were at a safe altitude, you unbuckled your seat belt and walked over to the cockpit, standing between Natasha and Wanda. “So,” you dragged out the word. “Where are we going?” Natasha chuckled and shook her head.
“We are going to St. Petersburg to visit my parents. They’ve been very excited to meet you,” your eyebrows shot up to your hairline. No one was excited to meet you. You saw Natasha glance at Wanda, who was oddly quiet. She seemed lost in her head, a million miles away. Natasha placed a hand on her thigh. “They are eccentric,” she continued. “Just letting you know.” You hummed, but your attention was on the witch.
“Hey, Wands,” your voice pulled her out of her head. “Can you do my hair? Lila gave me some beads to put in it.”
“Yeah,” she forced a smile. “Of course I can.” You moved to the side so she could walk past you.
“Thank you,” Natasha whispered. You nodded and squeezed her shoulder. Wanda was sitting down with a hairbrush already, and you grabbed the beads from your bag. You sat between her legs and felt the brush move through your hair. It was soothing.
“Where are we going before St. Petersburg?” You questioned softly. Her hands stuttered slightly. “I know we are going somewhere that has you upset unless her parents are that bad.” Wanda chuckled.
“They are great,” you turned to face her when her voice cracked. Her eyes were glossy with tears. “I’m sorry,” she wiped her tears away. “You asked me to do something, and here I am crying.” You placed a hand on top of hers.
“It can wait,” you smiled. “Do you want to talk about what’s wrong?” You sat down next to her with your legs crossed. She faced forward, running her fingers across the bristles of the brush.
“I asked Nat if we could stop at what’s left of Sokovia. Once it was cleared of the rubble, the neighboring countries took the land. Completely erased it from the map,” her accent was thicker the more she spoke. “But a memorial was built in memory of the victims.”
“Like your brother?” You watched her body shake, but she quickly nodded her head. She placed the brush down and gripped the bench you both sat on. You saw the signs of her powers looking for an outlet. She told you that her powers were connected to her emotions. Her body was tense. The red glow of her magic danced on her fingers. Without hesitation, you grabbed her hand and hid away everything you didn’t want her to see. Her magic died down, and she turned to face you. A few tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Can you tell me about them? Your parents, your brother, your home before the battle.”
“Why do you want to know?” You shrugged, opening up her palm and tracing the lines.
“Because it’s important to you, and I want to know about your life,” you said. “I want to know how I can help you.” Wanda smiled, squeezing your hand.
“Sokovia was,” she took a deep breath to steady her nerves. “Messy.” You weren’t expecting her to use that word. “It was messy to the outside world, but those living there found it beautiful. There was a lot of political turmoil, which resulted in the United States trying to fix it. I would fall asleep to the sound of bombs.”
“And you found that beautiful?” You thought living on the streets was hard enough. Wanda smiled, laughing slightly.
“Maybe that wasn’t beautiful, but we weren’t involved in the political nonsense as regular citizens. We had to rely on each other. I met some of the kindest people during those times. My parents tried very hard to provide for us to ensure we had food and a roof over our heads. We would watch sitcoms every night, and the laugh track would black out the war,” Wanda chuckled. “It sounds crazy when I say it out loud. You must think I’m insane,” you would never. “But I had to find the beautiful moments during the darkness.” You understood that. You found yourself doing the same thing: listening to your mother sing Caleb a song, finding a good book, and when your parents left you alone.
“I did the same,” you smiled. “Tell me more about your parents.” You could listen to Wanda talk about her home country for hours and hours. With every story she told, her eyes would light up, and her smile was so big. You hoped her smile would never fade away.
*
When the jet landed, Natasha and you allowed Wanda to visit the memorial without the two of you hovering. However, the Black Widow was passing back and forth - 5 steps one way, then turned around and walked back the other way. You sat on the ground, knees bent to rest your forearms on them. The memorial depicted an average Sokovian family - a mother, father, daughter, and son. Flowers and the Sokovian flag surrounded the family. “Who built it?” You asked. Natasha stopped her pacing and hummed in question. “Who built the memorial? It’s not like it appeared out of nowhere.” She faced the monument with her arms crossed. Wanda fell to her knees, and you knew Natasha was fighting the instinct to rush over to be with her.
“It kind of did,” she sat down next to you. “Stark has a relief foundation that helps with the messes we make, and they were on the scene before we made it back to the States,” Natasha sighed. “Stark says he didn’t do it, but you know Tony likes to take credit for everything,” you smiled, but the redhead sighed again. “Sokovia was a mess on and off the battlefield.”
“What happened?” You questioned. Natasha was quiet for a moment, gathering her thoughts.
“There was a lot of talk about dismantling the Avengers,” she started. “Many people thought we were dangerous, especially with what happened in New York, DC, and Lagos. Ross was trying to pass the Accords,” the Accords? You weren’t sure what that was. You looked at her, confused. “It was a document that would allow the UN to be in control of us and have all enhanced individuals would have to be registered and monitored,” she explained. Enhanced? So, people like you, Wanda, and America.
“Why didn’t it get passed?”
“We refused to sign it,” Natasha bent one of her knees and leaned back. “I think it was the first time I saw the team stand together,” she admitted. “With us banding together, the Accords made no traction. We were left to make our own choices, but we try to limit the damage we cause and help those affected.” You nodded and focused back on Wanda. You could feel her energy. There was an uptick in her heart rate. Her breathing was becoming uneven. She was grieving, alone. Natasha told you the Accords weren’t signed because the Avengers came together. You weren’t going to let her face this alone.
You stood up and walked over to her, ignoring the way Natasha called after you. You tiptoed, not wanting to scare her. “You can join me,” she invited you. Nodding, you knelt next to her. “It’s so quiet,” Wanda looked around. “Sokovia was never this quiet.” She ran her hand across the ground. “I can’t believe it’s gone.”
“It’s not gone,” you whispered. “Just because the place is gone, Sokovia is still alive. It’s alive because of you and everyone else who survived that day,” you placed your hand on the monument. “Now it lives through me because you are keeping its memory and culture alive.” She placed her hand on top of yours. “Can you sign that lullaby your mom used to sing? I’d love to learn it.”
“It’s in Sokovian,” you smiled.
“I’d love to have another language under my belt.” Wanda laughed and used the back of her hand to clear the tears from her face. She taught you the song. Some words felt heavy on your tongue, but you managed to muddle your way through it. As you learned it, you heard Natasha’s footsteps behind you. She kissed the top of Wanda’s head, and the witch leaned her weight against her. You smiled, closed your eyes, and began to hum the tune Wanda shared with you.
“We’ve been waiting for you,” you sang. “Now you are here. More perfect than I imagined,” the Sokovian words were hard to pronounce, and your voice shook. “Our house is now a home. No matter where you go. Sunlight shines on you,” you open your eyes. “Sunlight shines on you.”

So, I'm not a prisoner? part 3
Tumblr media
masterlist part 1 part 2 part 3
summary: you did not expect that your mission to take down the traitor, could end in such a difficult situation for you…
pairing: Natasha x Red Room teen reader
warnings: none
genre: fluff
words: 3293
a/n: this is the last part of this (mini) series. I’ll be posting a birthday special for tomorrow, and then that’s it 🫶
(also, I’m not American, so I apologise if the mac and cheese part is inaccurate. I just see kraft mac and cheese as some terrible artificial pasta with powdered cheese… 🫠)
You do not have my permission to repost, copy or translate my work
 |——————————— ⴵ ———————————|
After Natasha left your room, you simply allowed yourself to lay on the bed. It felt foreign to you. You’d never been allowed to just lay in bed. Laying in bed during the day was impossible in the Red Room.
You felt slightly uneasy since the moment you were left alone. It didn’t feel like you were alone…
You sat up on the bed, scanning the room. You stood up, walking to all the corners of the room, checking for obvious placements of cameras. After checking all corners, you continued with checking the vents, and after that, the heating system.
You couldn’t locate any cameras, but you knew they were there. You could feel it.
After debating where the cameras could possibly be, you took another good look at the room. If you had taken someone prisoner, where would you hide the camera?
After scanning the room for the fifth time, you decided to investigate the bedframe, finding an indent on the wooden frame at the top. The bed looked like some princess stuff to you, like a real royal would sleep in it. The bed itself had a heavy wooden frame, and the corners were high, all of them being connected with more wood at the top. There were thin, see-through curtains hanging on each corner. Yeah, real princessy…
You walked over to the desk, finding a pen. You pushed the desk chair towards the bed, stabilising yourself by holding the bedframe as you stood on the chair.
You ran the pen over the indent in the wood, scratching some of the wood away. It didn’t take long before you saw a black spot, and you knew you finally discovered the location of the camera.
You were quite proud of yourself, something you didn’t feel quite often. Carefully, you used the pen to pick the small camera out of the wooden bed frame, getting down from the chair and placing all items on the desk, returning the desk chair.
You sat back on the bed, waiting for Natasha to come back, preparing yourself to ask her about the camera situation.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Natasha returned to the room after about 30 minutes. She carried a few books, along with some dinner for you and herself. She put all the stuff down on the desk, immediately noticing the small camera and pen.
“What’s this?” she asked, picking up the camera.
“I know I’m just a teenager, but I’m not that stupid, you know,” you told her, not looking at her as you laid on the bed, staring at the ceiling.
“I know that,” Natasha started, turning around to face you and sitting on the desk chair again. “I didn’t know about this, I swear.”
You simply shrugged, sitting up and turning your body to look at her.
“I didn’t expect anything else. Your boss would be stupid to just leave me unattended. However, I am rather offended about the fact that they honestly thought I wouldn’t notice. Besides, I’m not sleeping in a room with a camera,” you stated, and Natasha nodded.
“I’ll talk to Fury about it. This shouldn’t have even been in your room. This wasn’t what we agreed on…” Natasha trailed off, and to be honest, she looked more hurt than you did.
You stayed quiet, however, and just waited on what Natasha would do next.
You noticed the stuff that Natasha had brought with her, and you felt yourself become pretty excited at the idea of being allowed to read a book for entertainment.
It only took a few seconds before Natasha turned back into herself again. She stuffed the camera in a pocket of her jacket, and then turned to the desk, grabbing the dinner she brought.
“So, I wasn’t really sure what you liked, but then again, I’m pretty sure you don’t know either, so I just brought you my sister’s favourite food,” Natasha stated, handing you a bowl of mac and cheese. You stirred the fork around for a bit, looking at the meal sceptically.
“What is this supposed to be?” you asked Natasha, and she smiled.
“It’s mac and cheese. It’s a well known American meal,” Natasha explained, smiling as she took a bite from her own mac and cheese.
You looked at her slightly disgusted, then back at the bowl in your hands.
“Please don’t tell me that this cheese comes from a powder from a bag…?” you asked hesitantly, and Natasha just gave you a small smirk.
“Okay, I won’t,” she said, taking another bite of her own bowl.
“And you are sure this is edible?” you questioned, stirring the pasta around in the bowl.
“It’s actually pretty good. You should try it,” Natasha stated, and you looked at her unsure, before turning back to your bowl, scooping a small amount of pasta of your fork and hesitantly taking a bite.
“Well?” Natasha asked.
You shrugged. “It doesn’t suck as much as I thought it would,” you stated, taking another small bite.
Natasha chuckled and ate her own food, smiling at the way you looked so sceptically at the meal. You didn’t really mind it, but it definitely wasn’t your favourite food.
You two ate in silence. It wasn’t uncomfortable. Maybe you’d even say you quite enjoyed Natasha’s presence. Not that you would ever admit it, of course.
After finishing the food, Natasha took the bowl from you, setting her own one on the desk as well as she grabbed the books.
“Like I said, I got you some entertainment. I wasn’t sure what kind of stories you like, but these are books Wanda enjoyed, so I figured you’d might like them too,” Natasha explained, handing you the books. You smiled at her as you took them, placing them on the bed beside you.
You took the first book in your lap, studying the cover and turning it over to read the back.
“Is it a series?” you asked as you picked up the second book, comparing the covers.
“Wanda said that that is a two book thing, and the others are stand alone”s,” Natasha explained, and you nodded as you went through the other books,
“Thank you,” you said after inspecting them all, placing them on your nightstand.
Natasha smiled and nodded. “Of course. I have something else for you, though,” she said as she reached into her pocket, pulling out a small device.
“It’s an mp3 player. I put some music on there that I thought you’d might like. I didn’t really know what else to get for entertainment, as Fury says you’re not allowed to have any electronic devices yet, but I cannot live without music,” Natasha explained, handing you the small device.
“Thanks,” you said as you took it, inspecting it.
“How does it work?” you asked after a few minutes, surprised with yourself that you couldn’t manage to turn it on. Right, because that made sense. You could hack into the most complicated systems, but turning on an mp3 player was far out of your league.
Natasha smiled and went to sit next to you on the bed, gently taking the mp3 player from your hands and turning it on.
She took her time explaining it all to you. How the playlists worked, how the volume button worked, and how to skip songs, or put them on repeat. She handed you the mp3 player back and you thanked her as you placed it on your nightstand as well.
Natasha talked with you for a bit, which mainly consisted out of her telling you stuff, and you giving responses to that. Sometimes.
-------------------------------------------------------------
After Natasha told you goodnight and left the room, you got settled with your first book. The cover drew you in, and you were excited to read your first ever story book.
Sure, you read books before, but all books were made to teach you something. Not to mention the fact that they were heavily indoctrinated. You had never read a book purely for your own enjoyment. You didn’t really think about it.
Now, as you were settled in your huge, soft bed with a copy of ‘Fireborn’ in your hands, you felt an odd, warm feeling in your chest.
You couldn’t really explain it, but you enjoyed it nonetheless.
After opening the book, you didn’t close it until the light was staring to peak into the room through the curtains. You had stayed up the entire night reading, not that you minded. You didn’t really plan on sleeping anyway. You were already having nightmares in Germany. You were certain you would have nightmares here as well.
After you put the book down, you made your way towards the bathroom, freshening yourself up and brushing your teeth.
You took one glance at the shower before you knew you had to try it. It looked so luxurious and large. You turned the water on, smiling as you felt it warm up. You had never had a warm shower in your life.
You were in the shower for what you were sure had to be longer than an hour. You simply revelled in the warmth, enjoying the feeling of all the dirt washing off.
You washed you hair two times, making sure all the dirt was gone before turning the shower off. The entire bathroom was warm and steamy, and the towels were huge and incredibly soft. You had never, ever in your life had a hot shower like this one. At the Red Room the water was luxe warm at best, and you were given only 5 minutes to complete your entire shower.
When on mission, sure you showered, but you stuck to your routines, keeping the showers cool and short to make sure you wouldn’t waste valuable time.
-------------------------------------------------------------
After stepping back into your room and digging through your closet, you found some simple sweatpants and a sweatshirt to wear.
You sat back on you bed, opening your book again. It was about an hour later when Natasha came into the room, and you had already finished the first book, now holding the second in your hand.
Natasha smiled at you, before noticing the book.
“You know that is the second part, right?” she asked as she closed the door, setting some sandwiches on your desk and taking her place on your desk chair again.
“I know. I already finished the first,” you stated, putting a piece of paper you found between the pages, before closing the book and putting it on your nightstand.
“Did you sleep?” Natasha asked surprised, and you simply shrugged.
“I didn't feel like it,” you stated, and Natasha gave you a knowing look, however, deciding not to comment on it as she reached over to the desk, grabbing a plate and handing it to you.
“I hope you like peanut butter sandwiches,” she said as you took the plate.
“I’ve never had one…” you said, inspecting the sandwich, taking the top part off to inspect what was on it.
“Well, you’re gonna like this even more than the mac and cheese…” Natasha trailed off, taking a bite out of her own sandwich. You gave her a confused look, turning back to the sandwich in front of you.
“Americans don’t honestly call this bread, do they?” you asked as you picked up the sandwich.
Natasha shrugged, eating her own sandwich without a word.
“Calling this bread is an insult to bread…” you stated as you took a bite out of the sandwich, cringing at the doughy texture the white bread had.
However, you finished the entire sandwich without a word, handing the plate back to Natasha after you finished. “Did you like it?” Natasha asked, putting the plate on the desk.
“It was… an interesting taste,” you stated. Natasha chuckled.
“Trust me, you’ll get some better food when you’re ready to eat at team meals. Wanda cooks the best food,” Natasha stated as she got up from her chair. You stayed seated on the bed, expecting Natasha to leave the room again. She didn’t.
“Well, come on. We need to get you some proper stuff so you don’t have to walk around in other’s people’s clothes all day,” Natasha told you with a smile, lending you her hand.
You were a little unsure at first, but you grabbed her hand nonetheless, letting her pull you from the bed. She walked over to the closet, grabbing a pair of sneakers that were standing at the bottom of it.
“Here. They might be a bit big, but they should fit fine for a little while,” Natasha said as she handed you the shoes.
You thanked her and put them on.
They were comfortable, but indeed, they were a bit big. Natasha left the room after you got the shoes on, and you followed her.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Natasha had taken you to a mall. She claimed you needed some stuff, and you simply agreed with everything she said. You figured she knew better anyway, and it’s not like you wanted to upset her. She had done so much for you already, so it was better to just do what made her happy.
Because of that, you simply agreed with every clothing item she held up, asking you if you liked it or not.
You weren’t sure what you liked, and if you were being honest, standing in the store was absolute torture. There were so many options, and there were so many people. After being in the store for only 15 minutes, and after hearing Natasha suggest a few clothing items, you were officially sure that you did, in fact, not like shopping.
Natasha saw you were having a hard time. Of course she did, but she knew you’d hate her if she pointed it out. She knew it would be better for you to say something yourself, and so she kept quiet as she watched you walking around the store uncomfortably.
After about 45 minutes, you still hadn’t picked anything, and Natasha decided she had given you long enough to say something yourself.
She stopped you from walking, guiding you to a seating area and putting her basket down.
“Are you okay?” she asked sincerely, and even though you knew she knew you weren’t, you merely shrugged and looked down at the ground. Natasha didn’t say anything, knowing you would talk out of your own initiative at some point.
“How do I know what I like?” you asked after a few minutes of silence, and Natasha smiled and she began to explain.
“You just try things on, and when you feel good in the clothes you are wearing, then you like something. If you put something on and it’s uncomfortable, and you don’t feel good in it, then you know it’s not something you like.”
You took a minute to process the information, before standing up and pointing at a t-shirt.
“I like that colour,” you stated, and Natasha followed your direction and she looked at the shirt. “It is a very pretty colour. You should try it on,” Natasha said as she walked towards the shirts, grabbing one in your size and putting it in her basket.
That’s how you and Natasha spend the next 30 minutes in the store. Either you or Natasha would point something out, and if you liked the colour, you put it in the basket.
It didn’t take long before Natasha noticed your exhaustion, and so she guided you towards the fitting rooms. You looked pretty done with the whole clothes shopping thing, and Natasha realised she might have pushed it a bit with wanting to do so much on basically your first day of freedom.
After trying each item on, you decided that the trying on was the worst part of the whole clothes shopping.
You picked around half of what you had picked out in the store, with Natasha’s approval of course, and after checking out, Natasha led you back towards the car. You got excited, thinking you were going to get to go back to your room and read. However, Natasha just put the bags of clothes in the car before locking it again, grabbing your hand and leading you back into the mall.
You groaned slightly, and Natasha chuckled as she led you up the escalator.
“You’ll like this, I promise,” she stated as she dragged you towards another store. However, this store had books on it’s logo, and your annoyance washed away immediately when you noticed you had ended up at a book store.
“I figured we should get you some books of your own,” Natasha stated, leading you inside as you nodded excitedly.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Natasha helped you pick out multiple books, and after she had paid for everything, you two finally made it back to the car. You were absolutely exhausted, especially after not sleeping that night, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when you fell asleep on the ride home.
After arriving back at the tower, Natasha had carefully woken you up, not wanting to startle you.
She carried all the clothes, while you carried the book as you two made your way back into the tower. After arriving back to you living quarters, Natasha pushed the door open. However, before you could step inside, another door opened, and Wanda just left her room.
She smiled when she noticed you two. Natasha gave her a smile in return while you let your gaze fall to the ground.
Wanda made her way over with a smile on her face.
“I hoped you liked the books. If you’d want, I have some more you could read,” she told you with excitement, and you glanced up at her as you gave her a small smile.
“Thank you,” you told her before looking at Natasha, almost pleading for her to break off the conversation.
Luckily, she got the hint and turned towards Wanda. “That’s very sweet, Wanda, thank you, but I think y/n had enough to read for just now,” she stated as she motioned her head towards the book bag in you hands.
Wanda smiled and nodded. “I love that store!” she said excitedly, and Natasha nodded in understanding before pushing your bedroom door open a little more.
“We gotta put all this stuff away,” she explained as she looked at you, and you quickly made your way into your room.
“I’ll see you at dinner,” Natasha told Wanda as she followed you into the room, letting the door fall close. She put all the bags on your bed, watching as you put away all the books onto a book shelf that stood against the wall.
Natasha took it upon herself to put away all the clothes.
You sat cross legged on the bed, watching Natasha while she put all the clothes away. After she finished, she sat at the end of your bed, giving you a sweet smile.
“Do you maybe wanna try and have dinner with the team tonight?” Natasha started, picking up on the deep breath you took. “I know it’s a bit quick, but I can assure you they’re very welcoming, and they won’t bite,” Natasha joked, hoping to calm your nerves a bit.
You shrugged. “Sure. It’s better than sitting in her all day,” you stated, and Natasha nodded in understanding.
You weren’t used to not having a routine. You craved the discipline and order that the Red Room had always provided you. Sure, the way they did it was terrible, but you didn’t know any better. Now, after not being in the Red Room for a few weeks, and after being in the Avengers tower for two days, you craved the routine the Red Room had given you.
But who knows? Maybe you’ll find a new routine. Maybe you’ll even enjoy this one…

After leaving the apartment, you immediately noticed the SHIELD agents piled up outside. They must have been listening to your conversation.
Natasha led you towards a SHIELD car, opening the door for you, allowing you to get in. She got in the drivers seat, and followed by about a dozen other SHIELD trucks, she drove towards an airport nearby.
The Quinjet was waiting at the airport, Clint Barton apparently inside of it.
“I know this must be very overwhelming for you,” Natasha spoke, glancing towards you before focusing on the road again.
You stayed quiet, instead staring out the window as you watched all objects blur.
“I promise you we are going to help you,” Natasha affirmed. You turned your head, looking at her.
“You can’t honestly sit there and tell me you are certain they won’t lock me away the moment I set foot in there,” you stated, and Natasha looked at you, giving you a sad smile.
“I promise you, I will do everything in my power to make sure you won’t be locked away,” Natasha started, focusing back on the road and taking a deep breath.
“How can you be so sure?” you asked.
“I’ll think of something. I can put you under my supervision. I can lock you in a room and make sure you can leave it with me. Anything. I will come up with anything,” Natasha assured you. You didn’t want to believe her. You didn’t believe her, yet for some reason, whether it was her tone or the way that she spoke, you couldn’t help but deep down, believe her, even just a little.
You sighed and looked back out the window, wanting nothing but to wake up from this nightmare.
Yet then again, if this were a nightmare, wouldn’t you just wake up in your old one?
Your mind was a mess, and you could hear all the voices in your head scream at you. You saw Madame B every time you closed your eyes, just yelling at you. Telling you what a screw-up you were. Telling you all the ways that you failed them.
You always hated Natasha Romanoff for being a traitor, but now you met her, and you couldn’t help but think that maybe you were wrong.
And even if you weren’t, you were now officially a traitor as well.
You wanted to make Dreykov proud. That’s what you were supposed to do, right? If you made him proud, you’d get rewarded. You were the pride jewel. He loved you, didn’t he? He cared about you. You weren’t some disposable Widow. You knew that. But, then again, he was the one that told you that. And could he really be trusted?
You groaned slightly, rubbing your temple with your right hand and you closed your eyes.
“Everything okay?” Natasha asked, giving you a concerned glance.
“I’m fine,” you bit back quickly, hating to look weak. Natasha didn’t take you response as hurtful. She knew you weren’t actively trying to hurt her. She understood the way you were raised, and she’d be damned if she, or anyone else, would ever misunderstand you.
The drive to the airport didn’t take long, and soon enough you could spot the Quinjet from the car.
“You brought the Avengers superjet…?” you asked, and Natasha gave you a small smile as she nodded. “That’s not exactly subtle…” you told her, yet Natasha just shrugged.
“It’s fast,” she responded, driving the car as close as she could get it to the Quinjet. Once she stopped the car, she got out, walking over to your side and opening the door for you. You didn’t acknowledge it as you got out, immediately noticing the other SHIELD trucks that were parked closely.
Some agents stood outside their cars, their hand on their weapon as they watched you.
You noticed a woman walking towards you, and you took a step back when you decided she was way to close.
The woman didn’t acknowledge your defensive attitude, instead holding up a pair of handcuffs and reaching for your hands.
You pulled your hands back, and before the woman could say anything, Natasha had noticed what was going on, stepping in front of you and stopping the woman.
“What are you doing?” Natasha asked, despite the fact it was obvious.
“It’s protocol,” the woman claimed, yet when she tried to step towards you again, Natasha stopped her.
“She came willingly,” Natasha stated, but the woman just shook her head.
You noticed neither of them were going to give up, and quite honestly you just wanted to get rid of the woman. And so, you took a step forward, holding up your hands to the woman, giving her an expecting look.
Natasha looked a bit shocked, yet didn’t take long to place her hand on your arm.
“You really don’t have to,” she stated, but you interrupted her.
“It’s fine. Let’s just go,” you stated, and the woman nodded as she made quick work of handcuffing you.
After she was finished, Natasha gently took your upper arm, leading you towards the Quinjet. Clint Barton was already waiting on board, having a small smile on his face when he spotted you two.
“Hey kid, nice to see you turn over a new leaf,” he said, yet you just scoffed.
He didn’t seem offended, but rather just smiled and turned the chair around, facing the control panel.
He pressed a few buttons, and the Quinjet closed.
“Take a seat. We’ll be flying for a few hours,” Natasha announced, and you nodded as you held up the pair of handcuffs.
A look of shock and confusion took place on Natasha’s face, before she quickly regained herself and gave you her famous smirk.
“Damn… You’re good good,” she told you, and you gave her a small smile before you sat down on a seat.
Natasha discarded of the handcuffs, placing them in some cupboard before taking a seat next to you. “I know you’re scared, and I know you’re not showing it, and you’ll never admit it, but I promise you, I will make sure everything is gonna be alright,” Natasha said, looking forward, not wanting to pressure you.
You would of course never let her know, but you appreciated what she said. You would indeed never admit it, but you were scared.
You weren’t just scared of the Avengers, though. You were afraid of what Dreykov would do to you. You were afraid what he would think, and what he would say. He would be so disappointed. Natasha Romanoff was right there. The traitor is sitting right next to you. You could so very easily just kill her. Slit her throat. Her guard was down. She would never see it coming. Dreykov would be so proud.
You weren’t sure whether you wanted to kill her, and for the first time in your life, you found yourself debating whether you should kill her or not.
Never once in your life did you think about killing someone or not. Never once did you think about the consequences. I was always just another assignment. Another person you had to wipe from existence, and you never, ever, dared to give it a second thought.
This experience was weird for you.
You didn’t really want to kill Natasha, but yet again, you were supposed to, so why wouldn’t you? It’s not like you really cared whether Natasha lived or died. Did you?
You simply sighed and let your head fall back against the wall behind you, closing your eyes and letting your thought run through your head. What would Dreykov say? You knew what he would say. Deep down, you knew he didn’t care.
-------------------------------------------------------------
After the Quinjet landed, Natasha and Clint guided you through the Avengers tower, claiming they need to take you to an office so you could speak with the director, Nick Fury.
You, of course, knew exactly where that office was, yet you decided to keep your mouth shut and just follow them. You didn’t want to make this situation worse for yourself. You knew the entire lay-out of the Avengers towers, and you were pretty certain Natasha was aware of that.
Once you took the elevator and made it to the office, Nick Fury was sitting behind his desk, Maria Hill standing of to the side with a clip board in her hand.
There were Shield agents standing outside the door, and you were pretty sure they were there to make sure you couldn’t try anything.
“Take a seat,” Nick Fury simply said, and you looked at Natasha unimpressed, before you took a step forward, setting yourself down in the seat at the other side of the desk, across from Nick Fury.
“You understand we cannot trust you, correct?” Fury stated, and you looked him in the eyes, enough for him to accept it as a yes, apparently.
“Director Hill,” Fury then mentioned, getting up from his seat.
Maria Hill walked towards the desk, placing her clip board on it as she sat down herself. She gave you a small smile. You didn’t return it.
You were focused on your surroundings. Clint had left the room. Natasha was leaning against the wall next to the door. She probably didn’t want to disturb the conversation, yet she didn’t want to leave you alone. Maybe she just wanted to keep her eye on you.
Before Fury walked away, he turned to look at you.
“Don’t fuck this up,” he stated, before walking towards the door, leaving the room.
You turned your gaze back to Maria, who had picked up a pen, now waiting for your attention to turn back to her. Once it did, she began speaking.
“I’m just going to ask you a few questions, and you just try and answer them to the best of you abilities,” she explained, and you nodded slightly.
“Could you please state your full name and date of birth?”
“Y/n, the rest I don’t know…” you replied, and Maria nodded. “Do you have any idea of how old you may be?” she asked and you nodded, giving her your assumed age.
She wrote the information down, scratching some things out on the clipboard before turning to the next question.
“Do you know where you were born?” she asked, and you nodded.
“I was born in Russia, but I’m not sure whether my parents were Russian,” you explained, and Maria nodded as she wrote it all down.
“Have you always been in Russia?”
You shook your head, briefly telling her about certain mission you had been on that took longer than a month.
There was that time in Seattle, when you lived with another Red Room Widow pretending to be your mother. You had gone to an actual school, and you had had actual friends.
There was another time in the Netherlands, when you were with a Hydra agent. Something about a debt Dreykov owed to Alexander Pierce. You had been chosen for a mission with a Hydra agent. You were posing as a normal teenager, whose mother passed, which is why your father moved you all the way to the Netherlands. You enjoyed the learning the language, yet you found it one of the harder ones to master due to the many odd rules.
Maria wrote every single detail you told her down, not missing a single thing as she made sure everything was on paper.
After a few more questions, and many ‘I don’t know’s’ from you, Maria finally put her pen down, smiling at you gently.
“That’s all for now,” she explained and you nodded.
“Come on,” you heard Natasha say, and you got up, walking towards her.
“See you later,” she told Maria before guiding you out. Were they a thing? Did Natasha see how Maria blushed? Did Natasha notice how she herself blushed?
Whatever.
Natasha led you towards the elevator, pressing a button, then entering a code. You learned about this. To get to the living quarters of the Avengers tower, you had to enter a code. This was to prevent any unwanted visitors in the living space of the Avengers.
Once the elevator opened, Natasha led you out, guiding you towards a hallway. You followed her the entire way, making sure to walk at least a metre behind her.
You weren’t allowed to walk next to your superiors, and even though you weren’t sure what you place in this tower would be, you didn’t want to take any chances. You didn’t want to stray to far from the manners you were taught.
Natasha probably noticed, but whether she did or not, she decided not to mention it.
Eventually, she stopped in front of a door, pushing a key in the keyhole and unlocking it.
“This will be you room,” she smiled and pushed the door open. “My room is across from this one, and the only other people in this hallway are Wanda and Carol, but she is not often on earth,” Natasha explained, and you nodded as if you didn’t already know it.
You stepped into the bedroom, and it took you a moment to process the fact, that all that space, would be yours now.
“Do you like it?” Natasha asked, waiting by the door.
“It’s so… big…” you stated, slowly walking further into the room. Natasha smiled as she made her way towards another door.
“This is the bathroom. I stocked it with some basic supplies beforehand, so you’ll probably be good for a little while, or just until we get the chance to go shopping,” Natasha stated as she closed the door again.
“This is the closet,” she explained, walking over to the piece of furniture and opening it.
“Right now, there are just some things from me and Wanda that will probably be wearable for you, but we’ll get you some new clothes soon,” Natasha smiled, and you nodded.
Natasha walked over to the desk, sitting down on the desk chair and looking at the ground. It seemed she had something to say, and it would be something you wouldn’t like. You took a seat on the bed, across from her, and simply waited until she spoke.
“Now, because we do not know you, we cannot just let you roam freely around the tower. I managed to convince Fury you shouldn’t be put in a cell, but unfortunately, this door will have to be locked until further notice,” Natasha explained and you nodded.
“He’d be stupid not to,” you replied, and Natasha nodded, giving you a small smile.
“I promise I will come check on you often, okay? And you can leave the room if you are accompanied, so I will make sure to take you on some daily walks or something, alright?” Natasha explained, and you nodded, giving her a smile in return.
“I promise you, everything will only get better now,” Natasha told you, and you nodded as she got up, walking towards the door.
“I’ll get you something to eat, and some entertainment,” she explained, and she left the room.
Suddenly, you were left alone. This was your room. You made the choice. You were officially a traitor. There was no going back. You did this to yourself. You royally screwed up. Or perhaps, just maybe, you made a really good choice?...

 |——————————— ⴵ ———————————|
A quick in and out. That was your mission. How on earth did you manage to screw it up so bad. In and out. Assassinate the traitor and come right back.
Dreykov would’ve been so proud.
But that didn’t happen. No. Every single aspect about that night failed to go according to plan. You snuck into the event Stark had hosted, was able to blend in with the other party goers, and you were able to hide when most of the people started to leave.
Once it was just the Avengers left, you stayed in your hiding spot, observing them. You were here to kill Natasha Romanoff, and Natasha Romanoff only.
You could not afford any casualties, so you had it all planned out.
You’d wait until the Avengers would leave, and you’d take Natasha out before she could make it to her living quarters. You knew that once she made it to the living space of the Avengers tower, getting to her would be a lot harder.
However, against all odds, Natasha excused herself from the group quite early, saying she wanted to get a good nights sleep.
You internally cursed yourself, hating that this wasn’t something that you had planned for.
Around the couches were still some Avengers sat. You recognised all of them. Clint Barton shouldn’t be too much trouble. He was only a guy who’s good with a bow. For Maria Hill could be said the same thing, except she’s very skilled with a gun.
No, you were worried about the other Avengers still seated. Tony Stark could call upon his armour in mere seconds. Thor had the power of thunder for god’s sake. Wanda Maximoff has exceptional powers, and therefor, if you were to attack with her still in the room, you’d be immobilised in an instant.
You were fairly certain you didn’t need to worry much about Bruce Banner. Sure, he could turn into the Hulk, but he didn’t turn often, and lately, the Hulk hasn’t been spotted in the battlefield, meaning he probably had many trouble turning into him.
Pietro Maximoff shouldn’t bring you a lot of trouble either.
Your main concern were Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers. One Super Soldier you could handle, but two? While fighting the rest of the Avengers? That wasn’t going to work.
Lucky for you, Wanda Maximoff had excused herself from the gathering a while ago. If you didn’t make to much noise, she wouldn’t be much of a problem. You could be outside before she’d even make it to the party deck.
Your original plan was to just wait. Natasha Romanoff would have usually sat through a party until far into the evening. You’d know, you’ve been watching her for weeks.
However, now that Romanoff has announced she was returning to her bedroom, a slight panic ran through your body.
Dreykov gave your 5 weeks to finish this assignment. That’s longer than any assignment you’d ever been on. You could not disappoint him with this. You had to kill the traitor.
You figured now was your only chance, and so, as Natasha Romanoff made her way towards the elevator, you followed her.
However, not even to your surprise, she stopped in the middle of the hallway.
“You know I’m an assassin, too? You’re good, but you’re not un noticeable,” she states, calmly turning around, being met with a gun to your face. The moment she stopped, you were wise enough to draw your gun, holding her at gunpoint for any sudden movements.
You could see a slight surprise appear on her face, before her face returned to her poker face once again.
“You’re just a child…” Natasha spoke slowly, seeming almost disappointed.
“You’re a traitor,” you spoke, loading the gun, taking a step closer. Natasha simply shook her head. “I’m sorry,” she spoke, before leaping towards you. You shot your gun, but Natasha was too fast, avoiding your gunfire as she ran past you, back to the other Avengers.
How on earth could you have missed that shot? She was right there.
Pathetic.
You don’t hesitate to run after her, determined to finish this tonight.
Very much not to your surprise, the moment you run back into the party hall, the Avengers are already standing up and ready. Ready to fight you.
You don’t hesitate to move forwards, and after fighting Clint Barton for mere seconds, you quickly realise they have no intention of hurting you. You could use that to your advantage, and you do.
You kick Barton hard, leaving him on the floor, heaving for air as you move forward, taking on Maria.
However, the moment you get close to Maria, two strong arms wrap around your body, pulling you back. They’re holding you tightly, and it doesn’t feel like they’re planning to let go.
You struggle in the hold, fighting against who ever is holding you as you try to break free. A small panic runs through your body. The fear of being captured by the Avengers taking place in your mind. You do not fear the Avengers, but the thought of being seen as a traitor by Dreykov hurts your heart more than words could describe.
“Stop struggling. We can help you,” you hear a voice behind you speak, and you soon come to realise the person you’re fighting is Captain America himself.
No wonder you couldn’t get loose.
Knowing it’s a Super Soldier, you’re quick to outsmart him, making him think you’re getting tired, relaxing your body is his hold. Because of this, the Captain lightens his grip a bit, giving you enough room to wiggle your arm free, moving it backwards to hit him in the face with your elbow.
Because of the surprise, he lets you go, allowing you to stand again.
The moment your feet hit the ground, you dash forward, holding up your knife as you use everyone’s shock to your advantage.
Everyone is surprised by your capability of escaping Steve’s grasp, not realising your already moving towards Natasha again. You reach her quickly, stabbing your knife into her stomach as far as it can go.
Natasha gasps, and you pull the knife out, watching as all the blood starts to seep from her stomach.
Slowly, Natasha sinks to the ground, Maria catching her, helping her down.
You move towards Natasha again, determined to get the job finished, but are quickly stopped by another pair of arms wrapping around your waist. You immediately recognise the metal arm, knowing that the Winter Soldier holds you in his grasp. You can’t escape him. You never have.
He pulls you backwards, pushing you to the ground as he tries to punch you. However, you regain yourself quickly, rolling away from under him and kicking him in the face.
Suddenly, you’re moved across the room. You forgot the damn speedster…
You raise your knife quickly, stabbing him before he has a chance to make another move.
“PIETRO!” you hear a voice yell, and you turn your head to the right. Shit. Wanda Maximoff must have heard the commotion and went down to take a look. You have to get out of there. You will never win a fight with her.
You move quickly, running towards the stairs. However, before you could reach them, you felt a stabbing pain in your left shoulder, the sound of a gun shot following soon after. You had been shot. Bucky Barnes had shot you in an attempt to slow you down.
But you didn’t let it.
Instead, you went towards the stairs a little quicker, dashing down the hundreds of flights of stairs to get to the main floor.
Of course, all SHIELD agents on the main floor were already expecting you, and you were followed by Steve Rogers, but you were quicker than him. You knew that.
You dashed past all the SHIELD agents, avoiding their gun fire as you made it towards an emergency exit.
The moment you stepped outside, you started your escape route. You already planned it, knowing exactly which way to go, no matter which way you would exit.
Steve followed you outside, but the moment he set foot outside the door, you were gone. You had disappeared into the night, leaving no trace.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Back in the Avengers tower, the team was recovering from your attack. Natasha was in bad shape. Your strike had been an attempt to murder her, and you didn’t miss any organs as you pierced your blade through her abdomen.
Pietro was much better. He was back on his feet quickly, seeing as though you stabbing him hadn’t been a murder attempt. You merely wanted to distract him.
It didn’t take long for Natasha to get back on her feet either, even though she was advised to stay on best rest after the surgery.
Natasha was determined to find you, and she quickly got to work.
Even though you had made it out of the Avengers tower quickly, you were still hurt, and some of you blood had fallen on the floor as you made your escaped towards the stairs. Clint and Maria had collected that blood, running multiple tests, only to find out you were not registered anywhere.
There was no record of your existence. Were you just another ghost story?
What they did find were traces of the Super Soldier serum. However, they were modified, almost as if they were genetically a part of your system.
Did that mean you were just another Hydra experiment? Natasha did hear you calling her a traitor. That had to mean you knew Dreykov, right? Who else viewed her as a traitor. I would make sense. Sending a modified teenage assassin after her, knowing Natasha was above killing children.
Even in the Red Room, she always hesitated when sparring against the younger students.
Dreykov must have had a lot of faith in you to send you after her. Natasha can only hope you’re not a graduate yet…
-------------------------------------------------------------
After the incident in the Avengers tower, you had fled to Germany. You figured it was best to leave the United States completely. And why would they ever search for you in Germany?
You had rented an apartment, loving the small town you had chosen. Dreykov had given you 5 weeks to finish the assignment, and now, you had only 1 week left. There is now way that you’re going to succeed in killing Natasha within the week.
They know you are after her now, and they will be prepared for you to make a return. You screwed it up.
Sloppy.
Right now, you were just heading back to your apartment. You had taken a walk, deciding to make the most out of the freedom you had in the moment. The week would be over soon, and the moment Dreykov would send for your return you are certain you will not be seeing daylight any time soon.
After you arrived in the apartment building, you instantly felt watched.
Had the Avengers found you?
You made your way up to your apartment, pushing the key into the lock and walking through the small hallway. Someone was in here, you could feel it.
You walked into the kitchen, grabbing a glass and filling it with water, keeping your back towards the living room.
“There are not a lot of places to hide in this apartment,” you spoke aloud into the emptiness of the apartment. Soon you heard a set of footsteps, and you felt another presence enter the room.
“You’re very skilled for your age,” you heard a voice behind you say, and you immediately recognised it as Natasha’s.
“And you are stronger than you look. I mean, even for you, I didn’t expect you to be on your feet so quickly,” you stated, turning around slowly. Natasha wasn’t holding a weapon in your face, something you were definitely expecting.
You scanned her quickly, seeing the weapons she held on her belt.
She didn’t come unarmed. Good. She’d be stupid to.
“I don’t mean you any harm,” Natasha said, taking a small step forward as she held her hands in the air, showing you her every movement.
You didn’t look impressed, instead just staring at her as she moved.
“Then you are a fool,” you told her, and you spotted a small smirk flashing over Natasha’s face. “And you are very full of yourself,” she said, moving towards the kitchen island, leaning on it.
“I can’t say I blame you. You took on a lot of the Avengers on your own. Even two Super Soldiers. That’s impressive,” she stated, giving you a small smile. You didn’t return it.
“What? Jealous someone better took your place when you betrayed us,” you asked Natasha, determined to get on her nerves.
Natasha’s smile dropped quickly.
“Quite the opposite, actually. I hoped no one would ever have to go through it again,” she told you, a hint of regret almost identifiable in her expression. Now it was your time to give her a small smile.
“You think you’re so important that everything should’ve ended with you?” you asked her, moving towards the kitchen island as well, setting your glass down, still holding onto it.
Natasha shook her head.
“What I am curious about, however, is the genetic Super Soldier serum that runs through your DNA,” Natasha paused, adjusting her stance before speaking again. “Tell me, was your dad a Super Soldier?”
You let out a huff of amusement, surprising Natasha.
“You think I believe you’re just here for a conversation? There are SHIELD agents placed on every corner of every street. Don’t think I didn’t notice it. The lovely young couple, drinking coffee at the restaurant downstairs? Amazing disguise, if you were trying to trick nine year olds,” you stated, finishing your glass of water.
Natasha smiles, clearly impressed with your observations.
“You’re right. I’m not here for just a conversation, although I do hope we can prevent violence,” Natasha started, but before she could continue you interrupted her.
“You’re here to bring me in.”
Natasha nodded, and the look on her face was almost apologetic.
“No one needs to get hurt. If you just come with me, there’s a big chance you could avoid confinement,” Natasha explained, yet you just scoffed and shook your head.
“Avoid confinement? Yeah right. There is no way, that after what I have done, your people won’t lock me away.”
“I can be very persuasive,” Natasha simply replied.
There was a small silence. Natasha knew you were debating your options. You didn’t seem like a brainwashed sheep. She knew that you knew better than trusting Dreykov’s lies. Sure, you still believed she was a traitor, but there is no way that you didn’t see that what Dreykov is doing is wrong.
“You know going back after a failed mission will result in punishment,” Natasha started, trying to get through to you. Trying to give you that little push you needed to go with her. “If you go with me, you’ll never be punished like that ever again,” she finished.
You looked up, deep in thought.
“How could you be so sure?” you asked her, and Natasha didn’t hesitate to respond.
“We can keep you safe-”
“I found you. I nearly killed you. Who’s to say some other Widow won’t come after me as well?” you replied, and Natasha gave you another small smile.
“I escaped the Red Room when I was 20,” Natasha started. “It took him 12 years to send someone after me. We will make sure we’ll take him down before he even has the chance to come after you.”
“How many times, did you try to kill him, exactly? Because I believe you attempted his murder twice already, both of which you failed. You blew him up in Budapest, and then another time when you took the air facility down. Do you honestly think you’ll succeed now?”
Natasha shook her head, seemingly recollecting her thoughts.
“I failed twice, and that was sloppy, but both times I didn’t have the Avengers on my side. You ran the moment you saw Wanda. You know what she is capable of. Taking down the Red Room for good shouldn’t be too difficult with the Avengers on our side,” Natasha explained, yet you just shook your head.
“I’m not like you,” you told her, yet Natasha just looked at you in confusion.
“I’m not some disposable widow like you were. I’m more important,” you explained, and Natasha gave you a sad smile.
“Everyone is just a disposable widow to him,” she started, but you interrupted her.
“I’m not. You tested my blood. You know I carry the Super Soldier serum. I’m not just some girl he picked up from the streets,” you explained, and Natasha gave you a small nod, encouraging to keep going.
“I can’t explain it, but he won’t just let me walk. He put too much time in my creation. He would never just let it go to waste,” you finished, looking down, avoiding Natasha’s gaze as you turned around, putting your glass by the sink.
“We’ll help you. I know that we can,” Natasha tried.
“Is it worth the risk? My life is not great, but it’s not terrible either. Dreykov values me, and I am not treated like a piece of meat, unlike you might suspect.”
“So the punishment is worth it, then? Knowing that in three days time, Dreykov will have you be recollected, and once you return to the Red Room, you’ll be punished severely for a failed mission,” Natasha paused, allowing you to let her words sink in.
“Or, in three days time, you could know you can go to bed without worrying about someone joining. You could know you can be safe, and sleep through the night without anyone disrupting you. Knowing that, is the choice really that hard?” Natasha finished, and you were almost at your breaking point.
Was it worth it? Was going back the best decision? Dreykov would hurt you, you knew that, but you deserved it. Didn’t you?
“Please, just come with me. We can help,” Natasha spoke, nearly begged.
You sighed deeply.
“Fine, but if you put me in a cell, I will go on a murder streak,” you told her, and Natasha let out a chuckle, before seeing your facial expression, and realising you were dead serious.
“Duly noted,” Natasha said, before motioning you towards the door.
What had you done…

 |——————————— ⴵ ———————————|
It was late. Rain was falling, making a soft sound again the windows glass. You and Natasha were driving though Norway. According to her, it was the best place to hide out. Ross had no jurisdiction there, making it safer for you, she claimed.
When Ross introduced the idea of the Sokovia accords, you were immediately against them. You refused to sign away your freedom, and so, even after the discussion you all had about it, you had made it clear you would not be signing it. Natasha had, and she begged you to sign it so you would be safe.
She had always cared about you. Of course, the other Avengers were your family, but ever since escaping the Red Room, it was Natasha who cared about you most.
She wanted to protect you, and if that meant signing the accords, she’d happily do so. You, however, stood your ground, telling her you didn’t want, and wouldn’t ever, be singing it. She told you she understood your decision, but she had made you promise to stay in your room.
You agreed, for a little while. You understood the world would become a little more dangerous for you in this situation.
After all, you were a recently turned assassin.
A big reason why you wouldn’t sign. You refused to let you newly given freedom be taken away. You refused to willingly sign you freedom away, basically just swapping the KGB with the American government. You weren’t doing that, and Natasha understood.
When Clint came for you, you refused to go with him.
He didn’t give up very easily, but when Vision and Wanda came into the conversation, he took Wanda a left you behind. You didn’t want to have to fight your family, and you thought Clint would understand that, yet he seemed to have a hard time doing so.
The Avengers had become your family after they saved you from the Red Room, and now they were going to be fighting each other? Over some stupid disagreement?
You simply refused to take part in it.
After the fight happened, you heard ‘team Cap’ was locked away in the Raft. You figured that meant Natasha was safe, yet you thought wrong.
When the door of your room opened and Natasha came inside, she didn’t bother giving you a hug. Instead, she barely greeted you as she moved to your closet, grabbing your emergency bag.
Natasha made you pack one when you were settled with the Avengers, just in case, and as it turns out, it appeared to be very handy.
You grabbed your backpack too, stuffing some of your important stuff in. It only consisted out of some notebooks and colour supplies, and a book you were reading. As the last item, you quickly stuffed in your stuffed animal before following Natasha, who led you out of the building safely.
After travelling for a while, and staying in some sketchy places, you and Natasha finally arrived at you destination.
You looked out the car window. You couldn’t see much, except for the insane amount of nature that grew around you. You saw the small trailer, and you had to admit, that even for a trailer, it didn’t look very fancy.
Natasha ordered you to stay in the car while she went to check it out, and you agreed as you waited patiently, your own gun in your hands, just in case.
After Natasha came out, you opened your car door, grabbing your bags and waiting for Natasha to do the same.
“It’s… cosy…” you spoke as you set you bags on the small couch, looking around the trailer.
You heard Natasha let out a small huff of amusement, walking past you and setting her own stuff in the bedroom.
“You should put your big bag here. There’s even a small closet,” Natasha said. You followed her, walking into the bedroom and putting your stuff on the other side.
“What are those bedsheets…?” you asked in slight disgust, hating the typical trailer pattern. Natasha let out a small laugh, running her hand across them. “They’re bedsheets, and they’re soft,” she stated as she sat down, watching your facial expression with amusement.
“You hilarious,” you deadpanned, putting some stuff in the small closet.
Natasha laughed again, grabbing your waist when you where turned around, dragging you onto the bed. You let out a small squeal as you fought against her grasp, yet Natasha just laughed and pulled you close, trying to hug you.
“The trailer is great,” she said as she settled on the bed, having you laying against her.
You turned around in her grasp, facing her. “It’s safe,” you replied, and Natasha looked at you and nodded.
You smiled when she leant down to give you a kiss on your forehead, laying your head on her chest. “I’m sorry you’re unsafe because of me,” Natasha suddenly spoke, resting her own head on top of yours.
“I’m rather unsafe with you, than safe on my own,” you responded, saying it without a thought.
Natasha smiled again, closing her eyes and letting herself fall asleep, you in her arms.
-------------------------------------------------------------
The next morning, Natasha was awake bright and early, tying up her sneakers for a run. You were still softly snoring in the bedroom. You had always hated getting up early, especially when it was for training.
Natasha went back into the room, giving you a soft kiss on your forehead and wiping some hair from your face, admiring your sleeping form.
She smiled softly before leaning away, leaving a note on the nightstand and getting outside, ready to run.
You woke up a while later, finding the note and settling on taking a shower instead, wanting to wait on Natasha for breakfast, not that there was any food in the trailer.
After the shower, which took you an embarrassingly long while to figure out the controls to heat it up, you sat on the small couch, grabbing the backpack you left there the previous night. You settled on doing some colouring, doodling in some sketchbook while you waited for Natasha to return.
After Natasha returned, she quickly had a shower, laughing when you came to explain her the controls and failing to realise Natasha had already figured it out.
When Natasha came out of the small bathroom, you had gone back to colouring, sitting criss-cross on the small couch.
“I was thinking of driving into town for breakfast. Do you want to go with me?” Natasha asked as she got a fake drivers licence from the cupboard, and then a fake id for you.
You nodded your head, closing your sketchbook and rushing to put on your shoes. Natasha chuckled at your excitement, grabbing her car keys and waiting by the door. After you had your shoes on you and Natasha walked to the car.
-------------------------------------------------------------
You arrived into town after about an hours drive. Natasha put some gas in the car while you went inside the gas station, seeing if they had any good foods.
You were outside pretty quickly, telling Natasha the gas station had ran out of buns.
Natasha drove you two to a supermarket, in which you quickly found the aisle with nice buns. You picked out a cinnamon bun and another sweet treat, while Natasha picked out ‘very boring bread’, in your words.
After getting back in the car, you and Natasha had a little car picnic, in which you happily ate your sweet and sticky treats.
It was truly a perfect breakfast, according to you.
After Natasha drove both of your back to the trailer. You two had gotten more in the grocery store then just the buns, and you were probably set for at least a few days.
After parking the car, you helped Natasha with the groceries, being the one to close the fridge as fast as possible after Natasha carefully put the last item in there. It was pretty full to say the least, and you definitely weren’t going to be the one to open it, as everything would surely fall out.
After spending a cosy day inside, Natasha made dinner, and now you were both settled on the small couch, a movie playing on Natasha’s computer.
“How old is this movie?” you exclaimed after seeing only 10 minutes, claiming the movie was incredibly slow.
Natasha smiled. “It’s a good movie, give it a chance,” she told you, and you sighed and sat back against her, eating your dinner as you two watched the movie. After you finished your dinner, it didn’t take long for you to fall asleep, leaning against Natasha in a uncomfortable way, your body bending in uncomfortable places, surely giving your muscles some pain.
Natasha paused the movie, closing her laptop and carrying you to the bedroom. She put you down on the bed, grabbing your stuffed animal and placing it in your grasp, before turning off the lights and crawling into the bed herself.
It may not have been the Avengers tower, and all the luxuries she had gotten used to over the years, yet she had the biggest luxury of all.
She had you, her unofficial child, safe, in her arms, and there was nothing else she needed.

 |——————————— ⴵ ———————————|
Living with Natasha and Maria was the most fun you had in a while. They made you food three times a day, always asked for your opinion on things, and always made sure you were okay. it was a completely different experience than you were used to, and it couldn't have been better.
Tonight Maria and Natasha scheduled a movie night, and to say you were excited was an understatement. The day before, Natasha had taken you to the store to pick out all sorts of snacks. Maria had made your favorite dinner and you were happy and content as you three watched the movie.
That was, until Natasha got a sudden call.
You paused the movie while she left the room to pick up the phone. You anxiously looked at the closed, knowing no normal person called at this time of night, so it must be your social worker.
Marie noticed your concerned gaze, deciding to distract you with the mission to help her make you three hot chocolates.
Soon enough, you were laughing in the kitchen, the amount of mini marshmallows in the hot beverage being absolutely unacceptable, all the while Maria just kept putting more in.
You helped Maria take the hot chocolates to the couches, putting them down on the coffee table. Just then Natasha walked in, a distressed look on her face. You looked at her, but kept your mouth shut. You didn't want to know what was wrong, especially if it meant leaving.
Her and Maria shared a knowing look, before Natasha sat down next to you and laid her hand on your knee, smiling warmly at you.
"Before I say anything, I just need you to know that you're not going anywhere. You are staying right here, with us. I promise,” Natasha said as Maria took a seat next to you as well.
"What's wrong?" you asked Natasha, and she hesitated a moment before responding.
"Alice called, and apparently, a foster parent you stayed with before has been arrested, and they want you to testify against him…” Natasha explained carefully, and you just sat there, avoiding your gaze back to the coffee table.
"Why was he arrested?” you asked when Natasha moved her hand to your back, rubbing soothingly with her thumb.
It was silent for a moment, before Natasha took a deep breath and spoke. “ He's been arrested for abuse and…” Natasha took another breath, finding herself incapable of just saying. “And sexual assault…” she said quietly, and you closed your eyes with a soft sigh.
You knew him, and of course you knew why he had been arrested. You just needed Natasha to say it. You needed to hear it.
"I'm done with movie night,” you said after a moment of silence, getting up and shrugging Natasha's hand off your back, making your way to your room without looking back.
Neither Natasha nor Marie tried to stop you, letting you walk to your room, knowing you needed the space.
You laid in your bed, your stuffed bunny clenched tightly to your chest as numb tears streamed down your face. You wanted to be alone, and yet, it was almost as if you wanted to be alone with Natasha and Maria. You'd never felt like this before. You've never craved the touch and attention of your foster parents before, so why was it suddenly so different this time?
It was like Natasha had heard your thoughts, because soon after, you heard a soft knock on the door.
You didn't say anything, feeling too numb to even acknowledge the fact someone just knocked, but it hadn't mattered as Natasha came in anyway, a mug of hot chocolate in her hand.
She didn't say anything as she walked towards you, sitting on the bed next to you and setting the mug down on your nightstand. You sat there in silence for a while, until a muffled sob could be heard from your mouth, and Natasha didn't hesitate to crawl up the bed, sitting against the headboard as she coddled you closely to her chest.
"It's okay. Everything is going to be okay,” she assured you as her hand gently stroked your back, her other hand on your head as she held you tightly.
You were so close to Natasha, you didn't think you had been so close to anyone else before. You didn't think anyone ever even gave you a hug like this. A hug with meaning. A hug filled with love and care. You cried for a while, and Natasha didn't say anything as she just held you.
After a while, your sobs had turned to sniffles, and you gently raised your head from Natasha's chest.
She wiped the strands of hair from your face, smiling gently as she cupped your cheeks.
"Everything is going to be okay,” she assured you again, and you could cry purely from the way that she said it. You didn't cry, instead just sitting up against the headboard next to her, you bunny still rightly in your embrace. Natasha had one arm over your shoulders, making you sit against her closely.
You didn't mind. You wanted to be as close to her as possible.
"Can I have my hot chocolate now?” you asked quietly while your head leaned on Natasha's shoulder. Natasha smiled and reached for the mug, handing it to you, watching as you drank happily.
"I don't want to testify,” you then said. Natasha hummed but didn't say anything, waiting for you to continue. “I don't wanna see him again…” you added softly, and Natasha grimaced slightly  at the idea of what he could have done to you.
"We'll think of something. We'll be here for you, I promise,” Natasha said as she gave you a kiss on your head.
You nodded as you finished your drink, handing Natasha the mug so she could put it back on your nightstand. After some more cuddles, you yawned slightly, and Natasha chuckled as she sat up straighter.
"You should get some sleep, you're exhausted,” she told you, and you nodded.
When Natasha went to get up, you hesitated for a moment, looking at your hands and picking at your skin.
"Can I stay with you tonight?” you asked quietly, almost embarrassed of the question.
Natasha smiled as she nodded, letting you stand up before she placed her hand on your back. "Of course you can.”
You went into your bathroom and quickly brushed your teeth, changing into some pajamas before walking back into your room. You grabbed your bunny and went to Natasha, who was waiting in the doorframe. She smiled as she led you to her room, opening it to reveal Maria already in the bed, a book in her hand.
The moment she saw you, she put her book down, opening her arms and inviting you to get in the bed.
"Come here sweet girl.” You quickly got in, crawling to Maria and letting yourself fall into her warm embrace. She smiled as she hugged you close, much like Natasha had done.
"I'll be right there,” Natasha said as she went into the bathroom, but you paid her little mind as you enjoyed Maria's warm hug.
Once Natasha was settled in the bed as well, you lay in between them, taking a deep breath before speaking. "Thank you,” you said quietly as you laid your head on Natasha's chest, falling asleep in no time.
"We love you, Malysh…” Natasha said as she kissed your forehead, her and Maria falling asleep as well.

Your breath was heavy as you ran as fast as your little legs would take you. You could hear the soldiers screaming, trying to find you as you heard the barlings dogs drawing closer. You ran through the snow, pushing the branches out of your way as you tried to get as far away from the Hydra base as possible.
The sound of the soldiers seemed to fade, and you had hope you finally lost them.
That hope was quickly forgotten as you fell face first into the snow, a dog biting your arm as it kept you down. The dog had jumped you from the side, pushing you to the ground and easily standing on top of you, biting and scratching as you felt the blood starting to pour-
-------------------------------------------------------------
You woke up gasping, sweat on your forehead as you reached for your arm, running your fingers over the permanent scar adorning it, the only proof remaining of what had happened that night.
When you reached your hands up, you felt your cheeks were wet. You must've cried at some point during the night. You were heaving, trying to keep in the sobs as you realized what you had dreamt about. You were so close to escaping that night.
It didn't take long until the tears were streaming again, sobs wrecking through your whole body as you folded your arms over your stomach, almost hugging yourself.
That night was one of many you wished you could forget.
Natasha had asked you about it. Ever since coming to the Avengers tower, she'd ask you every now and then how you were doing, and if you were experiencing any nightmares. She'd tell you it was normal, and that her and Bucky often got nightmares after they were first rescued. You'd shrug her off and deny it, not wanting to talk to anyone about the horrors you had been through, and the horrors you were forced to put others through.
Natasha was persistent, however, and even after many times of denying it, she never believed you.
That's how she knew you were in distress once again tonight. She had Friday alert her every time you were distressed. She was worried about you, of course, but she knew what a person could do after being freed from such a horrible life. She knew better than any other, having been through it herself, and she was afraid you might try to hurt yourself.
Usually, she didn't want to bother you, knowing you liked to keep to yourself, and she was afraid that if she'd push your personal space, you'd just push her further away.
However, tonight Friday alerted her you were much more distressed than usual, and it scared Natasha. What if you'd have to cry alone in your room, covering your sobs and trying to keep quiet because you were afraid someone would notice, and would get mad. What if you'd try to be fine and strong, and only fall apart when you were alone, just like she did…
And so, Natasha set a course for your room, bringing a stuffed animal with her she had bought for you. She knew you were a teenager, of course, but she also knew you had never owned anything a normal child would own, and she wanted to help you heal from that trauma.
When she reached your room, she hesitated for a moment, not knowing if walking in, or knocking, would be the best approach. What if you'd feel caught? What if you'd think Natasha was there to hurt you for showing weakness?
Natasha settled just walking in was the best approach. That way you wouldn't have time to try and hide your sadness.
And so, Natasha opened the door, her heart breaking when she saw the little human ball on the bed. You were hunched over, your knees to your chest and your arms hugging them. Natasha didn't miss the way your breath hitched when you heard the door open and close.
Natasha walked to your bed carefully but quickly. She wanted to comfort you without giving you much time to think about it.
She sat down on the bed, keeping her distance from you, not wanting to scare you but wanting to let you know she was there. You didn't dare look at her, and Natasha was unsure of what to do next.
"Do you want to talk about it?” she asked softly, and you shook your head. “No one is going to be mad at you for being upset, okay?” she continued, and you didn't give her a response. " I brought you something…” Natasha then said, placing the stuffed animal she brought on the bed next to you.
You looked at it carefully, staring at Natasha with big, watery eyes as she gave you an encouraging nod, urging you to take it.
Your movement was quick as you reached for it, clutching the stuffed animal to your chest, hugging it tightly. It was then Natasha noticed the reddened scars on your arm, indicating you must've scratched at the already existing scars.
Natasha shuffled a little closer, careful not to invade your space too much.
"Can I see that?” she then asked, motioning her hand towards your scar. You shook Your head and pulled your arm away, turning slightly so your back was now facing Natasha.
"I just wanna help you, I promise,”  Natasha pushed, and she shuffled closer again, now almost sitting next to you. You were still sniffling softly, and Natasha knew you were still terrified from whatever Nightmare you had.
Carefully, Natasha placed her arm around you and lightly pulled you into her chest. It didn't take long before you broke down, letting yourself fall onto Natasha as she rubbed your back, comforting you the best she could.
"It's gonna be okay…” Natasha tried reassuring you, but your sobs just grew.
"The dogs…” you sobbed. "The dogs got me. They bit me and pulled me down when I tried to run away when I was seven…” you cried out, and Natasha shushed you as she hugged you closer.
"It's okay, you are safe now. I'm not gonna let anyone hurt you ever again, I promise,” Natasha reassured, and you hugged her closer.
"Please don't leave me alone,” you cried out, and Natasha pulled you closer. " I'm never leaving you alone, y/n,” she promised, as she made a move to lie down on the bed, pulling you to lay on her chest.
"Try to get some sleep. I'm here, I'll protect you,” Natasha said as she stroked your back, feeling your breathing slowly even out, the stuffed animal still tight to your chest.
" I'll always protect you…”

 |——————————— ⴵ ———————————|
It was late when the car came to a stop. It had been two days ago when you were told you were going to have a new foster family. You had been moving around all your life, having been left at the door of a police station merely days after you were born. You had never met your parents, and you were put into the foster system almost immediately.
No one had ever adopted you, which unfortunately for you meant that you were still going from foster family to foster family, sometimes even group homes when there were no foster families available.
In your life, you had learned it was best never to connect with your foster families. Usually, it didn't take very long until you were off to the next one anyway.
And so, two days ago when the service worker called, you had started mentally preparing for the next mess you were going to be thrown into. You had learned that most foster families were only in it for the money, and that was often very noticable, ever after the first day you'd be there. Often, they didn't care much for you, which was fine. You were perfectly capable of taking care of yourself. It was the times they did care for you when you had to be careful.
When they did care, they'd usually have a long list of ridiculous rules, all of which you had to follow. When you failed to follow their ridiculous rules, there'd usually be some type of insane punishment, which more often than not ended up with you hurt, usually because you'd take a beating.
You were a little nervous to meet a new foster family, worried they'd be another collection of horrible people that called themselves a family, yet, you weren't quite fond of the family you were with now, so you didn't care much.
For now, you'd simply hold on to the hope that this new foster family would be better than the old one.
When your case worker came, you'd already packed. Seeing as you had never owned a lot of objects, you were done rather quickly. All your stuff easily fit in one trash bag, your valuable objects, such as your beloved stuffed bunny and your favorite book were all put in your school bag.
When you had gotten into the car, you definitely didn't expect much, but when the car drove through one of the most expensive neighborhoods in New York, you were definitely surprised that that is where the car stopped.
Either your case worker was gonna leave you at the dumpster, or your new foster family is rich rich.
Alice opened the door for you with a smile, and she got your (trash) bag from the trunk. You held onto your school bag tightly as Alice walked inside the huge apartment building, you following closely behind. When you were both inside, Alice walked to the large reception desk at the left side of the lobby. A man dressed in a neat suit sat behind it.
You had never ever been in an apartment complex fancy or rich enough to have a security guard in the lobby.
You were standing next to Alice as she told the security guard you were there for a Miss Romanoff and a Miss Hill. You were looking around the large and beautiful (and extremely fancy) lobby, too busy to even notice Alice mention two women.
The man typed some numbers on some device, then pointed Alice towards the elevator. Alice walked towards it, and you followed suit, too nervous to even spare a glance towards the security guard.
Even the elevator looked fancy, and to say you were surprised when Alice pressed the penthouse button would be an understatement.
When the elevator made it all the way to the top, Alice let you walk out first. There was only one door in front of the elevator, and you figured the penthouse was the only residence on the floor. You turned to Alice, who stood there waiting for you to knock on the door. You took a deep breath and took a few steps forward, pressing the fancy looking doorbell. How rich were these people if they even had a fancy looking doorbell?
The door opened soon enough, a brunette standing in the door frame with a smile on her face. She looked nice, but in your many years of experience you had learned that looks could be very deceiving.
“You must be y/n,” she said as she looked at you, and you were too nervous to do anything but nod. She gave you a kind smile before shifting her gaze to Alice, glancing at the trash bag with concern. Alice took a step forward, extending her hand to the woman.
“You must be Miss Hill. I'm Alice, we spoke on the phone,” she mentioned as she shook the hand of Miss Hill. “I am indeed, I'm so glad you could make it.”
Miss Hill stepped aside, allowing you to look into the penthouse.
“Please come in, my girlfriend will join us shortly,” she said, and you took small steps into the apartment. Girlfriend? You could've known. She looked too well dressed to be straight…
Alice followed you inside, and stood awkwardly in the little hallway as Miss Hill closed the door. She walked in front of you and went to the right, walking into an expensive looking kitchen. It had a kitchen island, and around it were a few high stools.
“You can sit down right here if you want. Would you like anything to drink?” Miss Hill asked, and you just shook your head. She then turned to Alice, who also shook her head with a smile. “No thank you, I'll be going shortly,” she stated as she set the trash bag next to the kitchen island, reaching into her own shoulder bag for a few papers.
She pulled out a map with documents, just as another woman joined you. “Oh, Miss Romanoff, so glad I got to see you too,” Alice stated as Miss Romanoff walked towards her, shaking her hand with a small but pleasant smile.
Miss Romanoff went to stand next to Miss Hill, both standing across from you as Alice handed the map to Miss Romanoff.
“Here are the last documents, and I will be going then. If you have any questions don't hesitate to let me know, my number is somewhere in there. Of course there will be some surprise inspections, and if you would like to get rid of the child please contact the number at the bottom,” Alice stated, and you grimaced at the words she used.
Natasha was uncomfortable with the use of words as well, but you missed the worried glance she sent you and she took the documents from Alice.
You just kept your gaze on your hands, picking at the skin around your fingers as Miss Hill walked Alice out. When she returned, she took a seat, Miss Romanoff now sitting as well.
“So, y/n, I am Natasha, and this here is my girlfriend Maria. It is so nice to meet you,” Natasha smiled, but you kept your gaze on your hands. When Natasha noticed you weren't going to reply, she continued speaking. “I know this must be very scary for you, but I just want you to know it's a little scary for us as well. This is our first time fostering anyone, so if we make any mistakes you just let us know okay?” Natasha asked, and you just nodded your head.
“So where are all your bags? Is someone bringing them over later or?...” Maria asked, and you glanced at her slightly before pointing towards the trash bag. “Those are my clothes…” you said in a quiet voice, and it took everything in Natasha to not say how ridiculous that was.
“Okay, we'll just have to get you a proper bag then, huh?” Maria said kindly,  before standing up. “Would you like to see your room?” Maria then asked, and you nodded as you stood up too, going to grab the trash bag. “It's okay, I got it,” Natasha mentioned as she bent down, picking it up. “It's just this way,” Maria said as she led you through a hallway.
She opened a door that carried an empty name plate, pushing it open and standing aside.
“We didn't really know what you liked, but we tried our best. If you would like to change anything, maybe paint a wall or get some decorations you just let us know okay?” Natasha said, and you nodded as you put your school bag down by the bed, sitting on it.
“All this is for me?” you asked as you looked around the room, taking in all the objects already in it. The desk and cabinets were empty, so were the walls, but the room was massive.
Natasha nodded with a smile, walking into the room and turning to the door on the right. She opened it and stepped aside. “This is your bathroom, and right there is the closet,” she said as she pointed to another door next to the bathroom.
“I have my own bathroom?” you questioned in disbelief, and Natasha nodded with a smile.
“There is another closet right here,” she said as she opened another door, a small, undeep closet revealing itself. At the door hung a mat with little pockets, all filled with different snacks and treats.
“We didn't really know what you liked, so we just bought a little bit of everything. These are all yours and you can eat them whenever you like. If anything ever runs out or if you would like some other snack or treat, just let us know and we can get it for you,” she explained, and you nodded with a small smile as you started at all the treats and snacks.
You had never really gotten any treats or snacks, and you didn't exactly have your own money to buy it.
Maria stayed at the door, wanting to give you your space while getting used to the new environment. “We'll just go and get started with dinner, so we'll leave you to settle in a little bit. Is there anything specific you'd like to eat? We can always order something, I'm never one to skip a good take-out meal,” Maria smiled, and Natasha walked to her side.
You shrugged, not really knowing what to say.
“We could order pizza? Or maybe sushi? Anything is okay,” Natasha pushed when she realized you weren't going to say anything yourself.
“Pizza?” you asked quietly, and Natasha smiled and nodded. “Pizza it is. Do you want a specific one?” Natasha asked as she pulled out her phone, and you shook your head softly.
“Just a margarita pizza please?” you asked, and Natasha nodded.
“We'll just be in the kitchen if you need us,” Maria told you, and she and Natasha left the room, closing the door behind them.
You dumped your clothes on the bed, throwing the trash bag aside and going through them. Most of them were old and worn, but they still fit so no one ever decided you needed new clothes. After you folded them all neatly you walked to the closet, surprised at how big it was. Your clothes didn't even fill 10% of the closet, and you wondered if rich people really needed that many clothes.
Natasha and Maria seemed like really nice people, and even though you'd never admit it, you were excited you got to be with them.
Of course you'd never trust some so fast, but until now they seemed nice and decent. The closet full of snacks definitely made you like them a little more, but you were still hesitant. You'd been in other families where they seemed nice at first, but the moment you'd make a mistake they'd beat you. You shuddered at the thoughts, grabbing a little bag of your favorite candy you found in the closet.
You sat on the bed and took out your stuffed bunny, sitting against the headboard and holding the bunny close.
You were scared and intimidated at this new place, but you were also happy you weren't at the other home anymore. Until now, this place seemed like a much better home to be.
-------------------------------------------------------------
After dinner, where you had mainly kept quiet and tried to avoid the questions they asked you, you went to your room and went straight into your bed.
You didn't sleep the entire night. You didn't know these people, and you were afraid they'd come into your room and hurt you. That happened once, in a foster family you had about a year ago. The foster father had gone into your room and he had touched you, hurting you more than you ever thought was possible.
Since that foster home, you'd always stay awake the first night, wanting to be ready if one of the foster parents did come into your room.
Of course, tonight, nothing happened. Natasha and Maria had gone to bed shortly after you had, and the entire apartment was quiet. When the sun rose the next morning, you knew you had to ask either Natasha or Maria for some electronic device.
You didn't have a phone or computer, but you were homeschooled and followed an online program. With all the moving around and switching homes, it was always difficult to find a high school you could consistently go to. And so, you had gotten an online course and some data to login. However, you'd need an electronic device for that, and you didn't have that.
When you walked into the kitchen around 8 am, Natasha and Maria were already awake. Maria was sitting at the kitchen counter, doing something on her laptop as she ate some toasts. Natasha was scrambling some eggs at the stove.
When Maria noticed you, she smiled and closed her laptop. "Good morning. How'd you sleep?” she asked and you shrugged. “Fine,” you said even though you knew damn well you hadn't slept at all.
“How do you like your eggs?” Natasha then asked, turning to you shortly before focusing on the eggs in the pan again.
“Scrambled is good,” you said as you sat down at the counter as well, preparing yourself to ask your question. After you took a deep breath and Natasha put some toast with eggs in front of you, you looked up, not really facing anyone but the counter top.
“So I was wondering…” you started carefully, and both Maria and Natasha looked at you as they waited for you to continue.
“I am doing online school, and I was just wondering if there is maybe an electronic device I could use? I don't have a phone or anything, but I do kinda need it…” you finished, your eyes darting around to Natasha, Maria and then back to the counter top again.
“Of course. We can do some shopping today, to get you some essentials,” Maria said as she got up, opening the fridge and grabbing some orange juice.
Your eyes widened slightly. They couldn't possibly mean they'd buy you a phone, could they?
-------------------------------------------------------------
After breakfast you, Maria and Natasha had gotten into their car. Their very expensive, very beautiful car. Natasha drove as Maria sat next to her. After about half an hour's drive, you arrived at a mall, and Maria opened the door for you. You thanked her and got out, following Natasha and Maria as they walked inside.
Once inside, the first place they headed for was an apple store. You were shocked to say the least, really hoping they weren't going to spend so much money on you.
When you entered the store, a worker came towards you three, asking if you needed help. Natasha said yes and asked him for the best phone they offered.
The worker led you there, and Natasha thanked him as she picked it up, examining it. You started at the phone wide eyed, but more so at the price. That phone was higher than 1.500 euros, and you didn't believe they'd actually buy that for you.
“Well, it looks great, what color would you like?” Natasha smiled as she went to pick up a box from the shelf.
You shook your head in shock, not believing they'd buy something like that for you. “I meant… like a device you have… that I could use… I didn't mean…” you stuttered out, and Natasha smiled as Maria laid a reassuring hand on your shoulder.
“Listen, sweetie, we just wanna get you everything you need. I promise you that we want to do this, okay? And you don't have to feel guilty that we're spending money on you, because we want to,” she told you.
Natasha looked at you too, smiling reassuringly. “We have plenty of money, and we can buy this for you easily. I promise you,” she explained.
“Okay…” you said quietly, still a bit unsure.
Natasha smiled and walked towards the phone cases, Maria, with her hand still on your shoulder followed her. “You can pick out any case you like,” Natasha explained, and you nodded as you picked out a clear case. Natasha smiled as she took it from you, putting it in her basket. Why did she need a basket?
After picking out the phone case, Natasha walked towards the ipads, looking over them and settling on the most expensive one, convinced that that would be the best.
You were about to protest, but before you could even open your mouth Natasha turned to you. “You can't possibly do online school on a phone now, can you?” “I really don't want you to spend so much money on me…” you told her, and she smiled at you before picking up the same color ipad the phone was. Then she turned to you, putting her hand on your shoulder.
“We want to get you whatever you need, and the money is not an issue for us, I promise you. Please let us get you what you need,” Natasha told you, and you simply nodded.
Natasha smiled and made you pick out a case, putting a keyboard case in her basket as well, claiming it was so you could use the ipad for school. You insisted you didn't need it, but Natasha just said they'd buy it just in case then.
After the most expensive trip to a store you had ever taken, resulting in an iphone, an ipad and airpods you really didn't expect them asking if you were okay to go to another store.
You said you were fine, and so you walked into another store where Natasha and Maria got you all kinds of things. All things for your bedroom, either to decorate or use. They had told you to pick out whatever you wanted, and after a lot of reassurance you had picked out several books, notebooks, some pens, markers and pencils, and some other stuff you liked.
They also let you pick out new covers for your bed, and after you told them you were fine with the cover that was on now, they told you that was one of their covers so you could pick some new ones out.
The cover currently on your bed was a new one Natasha and Maria had bought especially for your arrival, but you didn't need to know that. They wanted you to pick something you liked, and soon enough you left the store with some pillows, stuffed animals and new covers.
Everytime you came out of a store, you three had to take a trip to the car to dump the stuff you bought before you could continue your shopping spree, but at the end of the day you really had fun.
You felt a little bad that they spent so much money on you, but with their constant reassurance that they wanted to do it and that they had plenty of money, you felt a little better about it.
After you had gotten back home, Natasha and Maria both helped you put all your new stuff away, and you think you thanked them at least a thousand times for everything they bought you. After everything was put away, you went to the kitchen, sitting on the stool as the apple store bag was still on the counter.
Maria started dinner as Natasha sat down with you.
You opened the bag and took out the iphone first, opening it carefully and setting it up. Natasha helped unpack the case and handed it to you when you had set the iphone up.
You couldn't help but smile at your very first phone. You weren't old or anything, but you were definitely at an age where it was odd you still didn't have a phone. When you unpacked the ipad it was the same. You unpacked it and set it up, while Natasha took the cases out of the packaging and handed them to you.
After everything was taken care of, you thanked them once again, and they once again told you it was their absolute pleasure.
Maybe this foster home would be different…

float around and ghost my friends, part 2
[part one here]
1.4k words (this one’s a bit shorter, sorry!)
[ natasha x hydra!teen!reader ]
The morning after the party, you and your mom have an important conversation.
TWs: depression, underage drinking, past trauma and abuse
Tumblr media
When you wake up it feels like it takes hours. The crack in your curtains lets the sun hit directly in your eyes, making your head scream in even worse pain than it was. Your mouth and throat are so dry it hurts to swallow, but you think you’d rather die than get out of bed right now, so you burrow further into your pillow instead. You squeeze your eyes shut and attempt to hide from the sun, until you realize your pillow isnt a pillow and is, in fact, Natasha.
you already know pretending you’re still asleep is off the table, she’s a spy after all, but you don’t want to be the one to start the conversation this morning.
Is it morning?
You’re not sure the time but you’re sure as hell not opening your eyes to figure it out, your head is still pounding.
“y/n? You awake?” Despite how softly she speaks it sounds like a gunshot to your head, so instead of answering you hide your head with a groan. “Come on, bubs, let’s get you some painkillers.” She urges you to sit up and you do so sluggishly, it feels like your arms are made of lead when you bring them up to rub your bleary eyes. She reaches over for the glass on the side of your bed and drops a few pills into your hand.
You quickly take the pills and drain the cup in a few gulps, guess you didn’t realize how thirsty you were until the water hit your throat. Natasha takes the empty cup and you curl back into her, determined to sleep off the rest of the hangover and postpone your punishment for last night. Natasha’s not mad yet, and you want that to last as long as you can manage.
You feel her sigh as she pulls the blanket up to your chin. “Get some rest детка, i’ll be here when you wake up.” She says it like a promise, and you stop fighting sleep.
——
Natasha has seen you sick before, you’d had a bad head cold just a few months ago, and you tried to deny it the first two days. Natasha has never seen you like this, though. So small, fragile almost. More like a child now than she knew you’d been growing up. Most days you were attached at her hip, and she’d noticed it happening more recently, but you weren’t so open about it.
Last night, and even this morning however, were different. Very different. She’d never known you to be scared, or to let yourself be so vulnerable, and to be honest it scared her. The party was supposed to be good for you, but now Natasha was worried she’d brought back old habits from before.
Bringing you home was one thing, but the clinging and tears were out of character for you. She didn’t mind it, not at all, but the sudden shift gave her the impression something else was going on, something that wasn’t just the alcohol.
God, seeing you so upset and so out of it broke her heart, knowing she couldn’t take the pain away. You’re her kid, and she would do anything for you.
——
you wake up just a couple hours later, headache far more dull and with more energy than before. You hear a page in a book turn next to you and remember why you went back to sleep the first time. You’re careful not to move and to keep your breathing steady, you don’t want to be awake yet.
“I know you’re awake.” She says, and she’s still so quiet when she says it, but you can tell in her voice she’s upset. It’s not an angry-upset, but it’s enough that you’re practically holding your breath. She must’ve noticed you tense because she rubs your arm in a soothing manner. It helps.
“I’m not upset with you, okay? I just,” She pauses to breathe and you hear her book shut softly. “I just want to know what happened last night, and why you were drinking.”
You swallow thickly and try to ignore the burning in your eyes. “I’m sorry.”
“Hey, hey, there is nothing you need to apologize for, okay? I’m not mad at you i’m just worried about you. I want to make sure you’re okay.” You just keep your eyes forward, staring at the wall and not daring to look Natasha in the eyes because you know you'll just start crying and you wont be able to stop.
“I just wanted to feel normal for once. I-“ You suck in a sharp breath, willing yourself to just get the damn words out. “I wanted to feel like a real kid who gets to just have fun an-and not care about shit and get triggered by someone talking too loud or something breaking or-“ You sniff, “Or be someone who can actually sleep through the night on their own! I can’t even fucking do that!” You sit up with your face in your hands and tug at your hair roughly . “I cant just be friends with people i need to be sure they’re not gonna fucking give me back to-“
Natasha pulls you into her arms and you just break. Your hands leave your head and cling to the back of her night shirt instead while you sob into her shoulder. And she just holds you and rocks you back and forth. She just holds you so tight and it feels like she’ll never let you go, the kind of hold you’ve needed for a long time.
“I-, ah fuck i’m- im sorry,” You don’t fully know why you’re apologizing, just that it feels like you should. You pull away from her but she holds your arms to keep you from fully separating. “I didn’t meant to-to fall apart like that i just,” You look down and squeeze your eyes shut.
Natasha brings her hands up to swipe the tears from your cheeks. “No, bubs you don’t have to apologize. You never have to apologize for having these feelings, okay? If you need to vent or cry or just need me to be here i will. I always, always will, okay?” You look her in the eyes and nod as your body finally calms down, you feel well and truly loved.
You fall back into her, relishing in the warmth her arms give you. You’re comfortable for a while, just sitting together, and Natasha speaks again.
“I hate to ask but, what made you think that alcohol was going to help?” You sigh heavily and lean farther into her. You’re not worried anymore, at least not as much as when you woke up, but that didn’t make it easier to talk about.
“When i was-, when i was There it was the only thing i had to make the pain stop.” You pause and Natasha squeezes you again, urging you to continue. “It’s not like they were really planning to give me anything that would actually help, just shitty drinks to make me shut up.”
Talking about your time with Hydra would never be easy, but Natasha was keeping you grounded. You couldn’t keep the anger out of your voice but you decided a long time ago you really didn’t care. That place was hell.
Natasha takes an exaggerated breath in and out and you copy it, calming your racing heart. “I know the feeling, the Red Room had a similar system.” She rubs your back soothingly, “You haven’t had any drinks at the tower, have you?”
You quickly shake your head. “No, no i never liked it, i was just so tired of everything last night.” You swallow around the lump building in your throat again. “I haven’t been sleeping well for a while.”
“How long is awhile?”
You shrug, Natasha holds you tighter.
“Прости, мама.” (“I’m sorry, mama.”)
“Все в порядке, дорогая. Спасибо, что сказали мне.(“It’s alright dear. Thank you for telling me.”) Tell you what,” Natasha pulls out her phone to check the time. “Why don’t we run and grab some lunch and watch a movie? Your pick.”
You smile and pull away to stretch your back. “Can we grab something from that pizza place on the other block?”
“Pizza sounds great.”

float around and ghost my friends
[title- phoebe bridgers. natasha romanoff x teen!reader, minimal platonic peter x reader]
2.5k words
You didn’t have a normal childhood, but you mama encourages you to have a normal highschool experience and lets you go to a party. It doesn’t quite go how she wanted, or how you expected.
trigger warnings: underage drinking + drinking to cope, suicidal ideation?, depression, it’s sad ngl but it’s got a hopeful ending (probably)
Tumblr media
Living your life after a childhood of pain and misery is hard, it is so, so hard. You wonder if the man across the street is just a stranger or someone there to take you back, if the light flickering meant someone had found you, if the loud noise down the hall was a body against a wall. God, if you started thinking too hard about it you wouldn’t stop.
Thank god high school would only make it worse!
Growing up as a Hydra lab rat they still had to keep you occupied, lest you go catatonic and ruin their tests. You saw plenty of shows and movies about high school, about how important the dance next saturday was, when everyone’s classes were, the like. You understood, to an extent, that parties were a big deal. Parents went out of town, kids got shitfaced, snuck back into bed past “curfew.” fun times.
It’s been a little over a year since you were found by the Avangers, and just a few months since Natasha Romanoff finalized the adoption paperwork for you. Even if you couldn’t call her mom as much as you wanted to you were happy, truly content for the first time in your life. You had friends, family, and a mother who wanted nothing more than for you to enjoy your new life.
Which is why, when peter had invited you to a party being put on by someone in his class, your mom urged you to go.
You haven’t been sleeping much in the last few weeks. Insomnia and trauma-induced nightmares were taking their toll on you, but you could handle a bit of sleep deprivation. Besides, you weren’t about to concern Natasha more, she’s had enough on her plate lately.
No, no matter how long you stayed awake shaking, shivering, not breathing waiting for a sound in the hallway, you wouldn’t bother Natasha. Though, that didn’t stop you from being a bit more clingy during the day before calling it a night.
“It’s an opportunity for you to have fun outside the tower, детка, you should go.” You sat cross-legged on Natasha’s bed, watching as she put away laundry. It was calming. “I’m only a call away if you and Peter wanna ditch, but I want you to enjoy yourself.”
Her encouragement throws you off. “You know what happens at those parties though, don’t you?” You shift so you’re laying down against the pillows, “Shouldn’t you be making me stay home?”
Natasha laughs. “Hon, highschool parties aren’t nearly as crazy as movies make them out to be, and i know you. It’s not like you’re going to get wasted or make out with any boys.” You pull a face and Natasha laughs again, and you laugh with her.
“You don’t have to go if you dont want to,” She presses a kiss to your forehead and you smile up at her.
“I’ll go.”
You’re already regretting it, and you’ve only been in the house for 20 minutes. Peter don’t ditch you per se, but you haven’t seen him since you settled on the couch. The music pulses through the floor and you can feel the bass in your teeth. You’re pressed in at the far end of the couch hugging the armrest, clutching a soda can in one hand and hovering over Natasha’s contact in you phone with the other. A bark of laughter from the kitchen throws you out of your thoughts and you notice someone pouring out shots. somewhere in the back of your mind you wonder when the last time you had a drink was, to which your brain unhelpfully answers “too long.”
Aside from anesthesia, the best pain relief you had in your old life was alcohol. You understood that it wasn’t healthy, even back then you knew that, but it kept your thoughts from racing and helped you sleep at night.
A small crowd was formed around the kitchen counter, and you watch as two boys get locked into a fierce competition of Cup Pong.
You watch one of them, a lean, blonde boy from the soccer team, fading fast. only two of his cups have been emptied, he’s clearly a lightweight and already wobbling by his third shot. The other boy is one you recognize from your history class. he’s loud, obnoxious, and goading on the other boy who’s finally thrown the ping pong ball properly and landed it in a cup.
The loud one sinks in another two balls, and you see the blond visibly swallow. you don’t know what comes over you because in the next moment, you down his two shots in one go.
“Woah-hoh-hoh! looks like someone’s up to the challenge!” His face breaks into a shit eating grin, “Too bad you picked a battle with the undefeated champ here.” you hear a few whistles in the growing crowd and smirk, You can feel the buzz hitting your head and it feels good, you feel good for the first time in days.
“Undefeated, huh? Well, this is gonna be really embarrassing for you then.” You’re cocky, but you don’t care, you just wanna get drunk.
He quickly bounces another ball, landing in your forward cup, the second misses. Your two land and it’s a battle keeping your face straight. Your opponent is intimidated, but he hides it behind a grin and his height, but he’s too obvious. You know he’ll hit his limit far sooner than you’ll hit yours, so you tease him a bit.
To throw him off, you miss your next two throws, and his second lands. as soon as the cup is empty you begin to sway. you’re in no drunken state, there’s barely a buzz at this point, but he doesn’t know that. As far as he knows, you’re just as much of a lightweight as the blond before you.
He’s hiding his own swaying body by leaning forward on the counter, but you can see in his eyes he’s getting drunk, and thanks to the alcohol of choice being vodka, it won’t be much longer before he’s out. You were hoping for a bit more fun, but his head start in the is game threw that off a bit. You strike fast. Two balls, two cups, one throw, it’s impressive to the crowd but for you it’s child’s play. He down the cups, slower than before, and you can see sweat forming on his forehead.
He misses his next throw and you can’t stop yourself from being a bit disappointed. then again, you only have one cup left versus his, you huff a laugh.
“I mean, it’s a little unfair of me to be beating you. You had a head start in the game, why don’t we level it out?”
The crowd is rowdy and you see his face twist into a grimace. He’s getting agitated while you’re loosening up, happily putting on a show for everyone around you.
You pour yourself two more shots and take the one after the other. You revel in the burn, you feel lighter, higher, ready to put this stupid kid in his place.
You win that game, you win two more games, and everything becomes a blur. You think your phone buzzes a few times through the night but you ignore it in favor of pouring yourself another drink and laughing your ass off. It’s the first time you’ve ever felt normal, and even if you don’t know anyone’s names they’re funny enough, and you can forget about the past for the night.
You’re not noticeable in school, you hide yourself in the back of the class and only talk to peter and his friends. You’re allowed to leave class whenever you need to thanks to a plan you’re mom had set up with the school, so it’s not like you usually stick around enough to talk to anyone. You’re just some new kid lost in the crowd there, but now, here, people are talking to your face instead of whispering behind your back and avoiding eye contact. you finally feel free.
You get up and unsteadily return to the kitchen for another shitty bear. You look over your shoulder and throw your hands out. “Peter!!” you shout, ending in a giggle when you see his face, he’s looking at you funny. “hiiiii!!”
“Are you drunk??” Oh never mind, he sounds mad.
“Nooo?” You giggle again, he doesn’t believe you but you don’t really care.
Peter rubs his hand down his face and starts to guide you to the door.
“Where’re we going i was having funnnn,” You whine, pushing against his insistence you leave.
“(Y/n) i already called natasha, now drink this and sit tight.” He’s frustrated and hands you a water bottle, you pout and plop onto the grass, lazily sipping at the bottle.
You’re not sure how much later it happens, but Natasha’s car pulls up on the curb. She steps out and she looks pissed, if you had any energy left you’d probably be scared. “Hi мама,” even drunk and half asleep you still know you sound like a pathetic mess, and right now you really just want to catch up on all the sleep you’ve missed.
She kneels down next to you on the grass and moves your sweaty hair from your forehead, you notice her face soften. “Hi малышка, let’s get you home.”
“Are you mad at me?” You blurt out. Your voice is small, and you don’t mean to sound so weak but the alcohol in your system makes you feel vulnerable. “I don’ want you to be mad at me i was jus’ so tired.”
“No hun, i’m not mad. We’ll talk in the morning when you’ve sobered up, now up you get.”
If you weren’t so out of it you would’ve seen the heartbreak cross her face.
She hoists you up with your arm over her shoulder, and you’re grateful for it because without her you’d have fallen face first into the dirt.
You hear her ask Peter to open the door, and as soon as you’re in the car you’re out like a light.
Anyone could tell from a mile away that Natasha loved you. Since the day you were found she’d always cared and wanted the best for you. You were the child she’d always wanted, and she’d do anything for you. And anyone could tell that seeing her kid so small, so sad, was breaking her heart.
Peter’s phone call had been confusing, something about you getting too competitive to think straight and then too drunk to stand. She’d shown up expecting a slightly drunk teenager, not you. Not you sitting in the grass, on the curb, nursing a water bottle and looking so utterly defeated. She didn’t know what to do, she just wanted to take all your pain away.
Getting you home was the easy part. Apparently, getting you out of the party had also sucked all of your energy, and you were cooperative getting in the car, hell you were asleep as soon as the door shut. Natasha dropped Peter off at home before returning to the tower, after getting some context to the situation of course. Now it was time to get you to bed, and figure out her next steps.
“Mmmn?” You can barely open your eyes, everything just feels so heavy and faraway. Behind squinted eyes you recognize that it’s Natasha pulling you from the car.
“Come on sweetheart, let’s get you to bed.”
Your short nap didn’t help you much. “‘M tired,” You croak out, cringing at the taste of your dry mouth.
“I know you are bub,” She pull one of your arms over her shoulders and leads you through the tower’s garage to the elevator. “That’s why we’re gonna get you cleaned up in into bed.”
Your response isn’t more than an affirmative grunt, but you can get the words past your throat.
Eventually, after a blur of motion and lights and almost getting sick on the way up, you’re in your room. You don’t want to be in here.
Natasha guides you to your bed, keeping you steady as you sit down. Before she can pull away your hands grip her shoulders like a vice.
You don’t even realize you’re crying. “Don’- Мама don’t leave. Please don’t leave.” You don’t want to be alone. You just want to sleep but you can’t sleep because when you sleep your mind attacks and attacks and attacks and you can’t keep dealing with this forever you’re so tired.
“Hey hey, no i’m not going anywhere детка. Im not leaving, but i need you to breathe, please.” You can’t stop yourself from closing your eyes. You hate the way she’s looking at you, she looks so sad and you’re the one doing this. God look at you, look how pathetic you’ve become.
“I ju- I just wanted everything to stop. i wanted to be normal in sorry. i’m sorry мама i’m sorry i’m just tired i’m sorry.” The words get caught in your throat and choked out in a sob. You try to pull back, hide in you pillows and shut out everything, but natasha’s returned grip is solid and fierce, yet gentle, and kind, and she pulls you into her chest as you fight every cry that bubbles up.
“Let it out малышка, don’t fight it. It’s okay, i’ve got you. I’ve got you, love.” Her hold on you grows tighter and you can almost feel your chest open just from her words. No matter how much you were taught and built against it from birth, Natasha was your lifeline.
Minutes or hours later, you’re cries turn to whimper and the bone-deep exhaustion makes itself known again. Your arms feel so heavy, you can barely keep your puffy eyes open and you just want to sleep for the next month.
“Hey,” Natasha says it so softly she’s worried you’ll miss it, but she doesn’t want to startle you. “Let’s get you changed. I’m just gonna grab you some pajamas, okay?”
You must’ve nodded, because natasha moves and you faintly hear your dresser draws move. You’re half asleep as natasha helps you change into comfier clothes, you’re eyes aren’t even open once she’s tucked you and herself into bed and holds your head to her chest.
“I love you so, so much малышка. Got to sleep, okay? I’ve got you. I’ve got you.”
Your answer is a whisper “I love you, мама.”
You’re out like a light, you limbs heavy and mind blissfully quiet. Natasha hardly sleeps, thinking only about you and the conversation you need to have.
