Face designs for the Valar!
Each of the Valar has unique face pattern/marking things shared by their Maiar. Some disciples of the Valar (like when Celegorm joined the Hunt) tattoo their faces to match.
Melian's markings match Vana's, and are passed down through her descendants.

The silly post about Elrond’s healing just being very strong Dad Energy™️ made me want to put forth a theory I’ve had for a while about what Melian is the Maia of, and how that affects the powers of her descendants.
So it’s no secret that the Valar are a pantheon in the style of the Pre-Christian Europe, like the Greek and Norse pantheons; head-honcho god has bird/sky themes, and all the big archetypes are filled: war, nature, forge, spring, death/doom, chaos, sea, weaving/history, hunting, dancing, dreams, healing/medicine, stars, and pity, the last one being Nienna and a bit of an outlier who makes a lot of sense filling the role that Mary fills in Catholicism, which makes the whole group align better with Tolkien’s Catholic worldview of compassionate deities, a concept that was NOT prevalent in those pre-Christian gods.
A few main members of the archetypal pantheon are missing, One is a god of music, which makes sense because ALL the Ainur are gods of music due to the nature of the universe. Others are taken up by maiar, such as Arien and Tillion being the sun and the moon, Tillion being a Maia of Orome the hunter, which draws Artemis connections, and Arien being a Maia of Vana the ever young. Eonwe is the messenger and
Melian’s role is never expressly defined unlike Arien and Tillion and others. She’s associated with both spring and healing through Vana and Este, and her contribution to the song pre-children seems to be songbirds-more specifically teaching the nightingales to sing songs, since birds should fall under Manwe or Yavanna’s purview (she is said to be akin to Yavanna, but that’s vague and not fleshed out).
But she’s also seen as one of the more powerful Maia, and I don’t see that justified by being the Maia of songbirds. Again, music is ALL of the Ainur’s thing, and what do songbirds have to do with healing, the main power her descendants inherit?
Well, what do songbirds have to do with spring? What is the point of their songs?
It’s attracting a mate. Birds in spring is euphemistically associated with love and sex.
Melian is the only Maia we know of to marry one of the children, and this pantheon is MISSING a goddess of love and marriage and motherhood. Her daughter then goes on to have THE romance of legend, and while Luthien is acting out of love for Beren she is basically unstoppable.
We never see Luthien use her power any other way, outside of her love story, and the idea that she would NOT be as powerful when her songs were not in service of saving her love is actually pretty compelling to me. And also solves the problem of “Why did Luthien, who can put a spell on MORGOTH, let Celegorm and Curufin keep her hostage for a bit.”
The idea of Melian being the Maia of Love and Motherhood also makes sense in context of her abandoning Doriath. If her power comes from love of her husband and daughter, then the girdle was doomed once Thingol died whether she stuck around or not, so her leaving is more forgivable.
Love being such a huge theme in Tolkien’s work, it makes sense why Melian and her descendants are SO powerful. And why they are canonically the most beautiful creatures to walk the earth, as beauty and love are usually intertwined in these figures of mythology.
And Tolkien connects love and healing many times in his work. Aragorn working in the halls of Healing specifically orders Eomer to be the first person Eowyn sees, because her love for her brother is more true than her toxic obsession with him. Also as noted in the other post, his magic healing includes giving them a kiss on the forehead.
Faramir and Eowyn’s whole relationship plays out in the halls of healing, and Eowyn’s arc in this time is seeing no value in healing, either herself or others, until she finds love and hope in Faramir and basically in the same breath vows to become a healer.
Elrond’s compassion and Big Dad Energy and love for everyone is indeed what makes him the best healer in middle earth. And I’m going to argue there is a legit reason for that, with the source of his family’s healing talent being this world’s goddess of love. And of motherhood, which I think translates well to Elrond being everyone’s dad. Perhaps I should say “parenthood” since that is so obviously passed down.
Tl.Dr. Melian is the Maia of love, romantic and familial, which is the source of the Peredhil’s healing powers (and extreme attractiveness).

The maiden whom the Valar chose from among the Maiar to guide the vessel of the Sun was named ARIEN, and he that steered the island of the Moon was TILION. In the days of the Trees Arien had tended the golden flowers in the gardens of Vana, and watered them with the bright dews of Laurelin; but Tilion was a hunter of the company of Orome, and he had a silver bow.

I swear I wrote this down before, but I cant find it in any of my notes so here's a little fun idea! When the world gets recreated so its no longer Arda Marred, I think the Valar got together and Looked at the Finwe problem and shrugged and decided to make all of Miriel and her descendants Maiar to slove that tricky little problem of Remarriage.
Because the Feanorians are now Maiar, they aren't technically born, meaning they aren't really siblings and part of the same family so there is no real issue in separating them now is there?
Miriel is one of Vaire's weavers of course, and Feanor is one of Aule's most talented smiths, but that is understandable as he is the spirit of Hearth Fire itself. There are others within Aule's Halls, but their knowledge of each other is passing, for Celebrimbor tends to stay with the jewelry makers and Curufin likes creating hunting gear for Orome's hunt
Orome is almost never seen without his most prized hunter, Celegorm, who prefers a form that looks more wolf than Elf.
Vana, Orome's wife, herself has a pair of giggling and twittering songbirds that follow her around as she follows her husband's Hunt. They dance and sing and twirl in sync that many often just call the pair of them by a singular name, Ambarussa.
Irmo within his forest full of Song and Music has a very talented Maia that is so in tune with thr Song that they can play with it however they choose. Maglor only uses this ability to give the Elves good dreams, of course.
Este is forever thankful of her assistant Caranthir, who keeps all her medical necessities and books in order, so she is always prepared to help those in need, even if he himself doesn't have the best beside manner.
Lady Nienna’s Maia, Maedhros is a bit more of a recluse. He is charming when spoken too, but there is something distant, some type of lingering melancholy that clings to him, like a weak dawn in the deepest days of winter. He tends to hide himself away in the forests surrounding Formenos, helping those who are lost find their way back home.
Then there are Finwe and his beautiful wife Indis, their children, and many grandchildren. They are a stunning example of a happy family, and all the citizens of Tirion love having them as their royal family. Nothing is ever wrong, even when Fingolfin’s daughter Aredhel got lost during a hunt, she was lucky enough to be escorted back to her worried brothers' camp.
Fingon, who had never felt the degree of terror that flooded his veins at the thought of his sister lost in the woods, terror that was much stronger than what was called for because what could befell her in their peaceful land of Valinor?
She was being ferried on the back of a behemoth of a horse, pristine and laughing at the antics of the silver wolf-like Maia walking at her side. The horse was being led by a silent Maia, who smiled softly at the pair but made no move to include himself.
Fingon looked up at the tall Maia, and felt something in his fea shatter. He always had felt like something was missing, that he would havr an urge to go looking for someone he could never find, catch himself looking up to share an idea with someone who must have been taller than him only to look up at empty air. His bed felt so cold, but no matter how high he tended the hearth flames he knew it was because it was empty. He would look to the distant mountains and see a dawn peaking over their tops and weep as something in his fea ached.
Everything felt so overwhelming when he looked at this Maia, this being that looked cold, who wore furs and had snow dusting his shoulders even though it was a warm sunny summer day. Fingon was so lost in the sensations swirling within him that he was too slow to act before the Maia helped Aredhel off his horse, swung up himself and was out of the clearing. That wolfish Maia giving his sister a laughing twirl before bounding off into the thicket, chasing after the distant horn call.
Fingon’s knees felt weak, he found himself sinking to the forest floor. This world may be Arda Remade, but he still felt Marred.
#amber rambles#Silmarillion#maedhros#Feanorians#fingon#there was more to this that i thought i wrote down#basically the story is in Arda Remade fingon finds that he is the only one in his family that feels Off#he doesnt knkw why. no one has memories of arda marred but fingon knows he lost something precious to him in the remaking#finwe is worried for his eldest grandson. he doenst know why seeing someone he loves turn so melancholic makes him afraid#it just does. so he urges fingon to visit Lorien to soothe his Fea and heal#here he meets Caranthir and Maglor and he feels a connection to both and spends a lot of his time he#there bothering the both of them and he shares his feelings with maglor who just humms and agrees with him#that the Music within his fea is missing something.maybe someone? maybe hes supposed to go out and find them#maglor tells him to let the Music guide him and Caranthir gives him supplies and then fingon is off#he travels around Valinor by himself. where he meets the other non-Feanorians and feels pieces slot together#his most eye opening experience was meeting with the Maia Feanor and his Elf lover Nerdanel up in Formenos#she agrees with him that what hes feeling is valid as she also lost something in the Remaking#she cannot have children and this aches as she has dreams of a full house and 7 perfect sons that are no longer hers#she shows him her sculptures and as he looks he realizes he has met most of them on his journey! not elves like she has created#but Maiar who under their unnatural differneces look almost identical to these sculptures#he pauses at the last one. the unfamiliar one. Nerdanel sighs and says she feels like this one was her first born#the one she lost even before the Remaking. Fingon feels the same. this face makes him ache.#he wanders the forest that night haunted by these people. these elves he feels like he should know but doesnt. hes so in his thoughts#he doesnt realize hes lost. he calls out into the woods and hears nothing call back but his echos. a chill crawls up his spine#his breath begins to fog and there is a sound behind him and he twirls and there is rhat sculpture. his missing piece#Dont Worry. the figure of Winter and Memory says to him. I Found You#You Found Me. Fingon replies

they remember it so vividly. the day that you walked into their life. passing by them in all your perfectness. your beauty, your demeanour, the small little smile that you gave them once you caught their unintentional stare. many would call it just a chance encounter. the gardens, a banquet, a mere passing interaction - but oh, you will scorn their mind for all eternity. did you feel it too? the connection that they felt? the song of your fëa, surely it was singing for them? it will drive them mad and they will be eager to meet you again. when you recognise them, their heart would sore. so you did feel the same? oh, if only you knew what you had gotten yourself into. they'll make it their life's mission to learn every little thing about you. stalking, you say? no, they're just lovingly learning more about their soulmate. now they are convinced that you are meant to be theirs. and it certainly would be unfortunate if you didn't think so too

I’d love a short fic about Elwing not really settling in to society in post-War Valinor—she doesn’t love the Ainur (any good they did feels like it came far too late) and she doesn’t love the Eldar (she can forgive those who waited for the divine backing to attack, she can maybe forgive those who stayed on their ships, but she just does not get along with them—and those who Sailed in the end are also…too much, almost all the time).
And that’s fine, for Elwing. She’s sad for many reasons but loneliness isn’t one of them. She’s a little too tense in a crowd, a little too bitter at kind smiles, but mostly she’s genuinely happiest with her tower, the seashore, and her birds.
But Eärendil is not. Eärendil is happiest with a ship-wheel under his hand and a horizon before him, and no civilization for miles, but he’s used to doing it with a crew. Eärendil is lonely. So for his sake, Elwing goes to the Valar one more time and asks: is this meant to be punishment, as well as honorable charge? Because if not, her husband needs more hands aboard. More people, to chat, raise sails, swab decks and sing shanties with across the endless night he sails. She’ll gladly join him herself, but he also needs a lighthouse to sail home to, and anyway, he needs more than one mate. Can the Silmaril and the hallowed ship not guard more than one elf through long voyages at the edge of Void? If not, can some Maiar not be found who will don incarnate form to join the greatest Mariner the world has ever known?
The answer is only the latter, I think. Gil-Estel is Eärendil’s charge and his alone, among the Elven kindred. (He obeys this edict for an Age of the world, then the sinking of Númenor starts giving people rides anyway—but only short, one-night trips, save for when it’s Elwing who joins him. Most Elves cannot bear the close edge of the Void like the Star-browed Mariner and his sometimes-winged wife.)
But that’s how Eärendil gets a small, ever-cycling-through crew of Maiar. Mostly Ulmo’s and Varda’s people, as it is most in their nature. But Manwë’s come for the high air, and Oromë’s, Tulkas’s, and Nessa’s for the adventure. Vana’s come for the hope renewed; Vairë’s for the different view; Aulë’s and Yavanna’s most often to covertly make sure the Silmaril is being looked after properly (Eärendil isn’t sure how he could fail to look after an unmarrable gem, but they have Opinions). Maiar of the Fëanturi come for their own reasons, rarely explained—especially Írmo’s people. Maiar of Mandos and Nienna are sober; Írmo’s are just strange, as a rule—though often fun to have around! Estë’s people rarely come, and when they do it often bodes ill, for either the Vingilotë or Middle Earth—they know where they’re likely to be needed. Estë’s and Tulkas’s are the most likely to leap off the side mid-flight and reappear hours later with a smiling promise that he need not worry where they’ve been or what they’ve been doing. Eärendil doesn’t ask, unless it seems (rarely) like he can help—he, too, has always prioritized forgiveness over permission.
And at the end of the night, they’re all invited to crowd around Elwing’s table, as Eärendil’s crew ever was, to chatter some more amongst themselves and sing to her about the horizons they saw this time. With a trip into town now and then for supplies, it’s all the company she needs.

Classes & Sub-Classes, part 2:
Cleric & Druid:
Masterlist
Bonus: You start with 6 bonus for your Standard Array, and you can move around your chosen Class Standard Array for your liking, it´s just there to help along
Note; this will not be built up like DND 5e but is heavily inspired by it
Cleric:
All Clerics start as level 3 devoted, and two Cleric spells. At level 5 you get three and at level 12 five. You get knowledge in the domain of the deity (Vala or Maia) you are devoted to, say you were a devoted to Este, or one of her Maia, you know 2 healing spells on top of your three spells, one of them being sleep, and you have advantage when rolling if someone needs healing or you need to know something about herbs. Your main quest in you life is spreading the word of your deity and sometimes your deity will speak through you to help you along, you trust your deity wholeheartedly and don´t believe they could ever do anything wrong. You inspire people around you with your faith and hope and can roll with an advantage to make your foe hesitate. When fighting it almost feels as if your deity is standing beside you, guiding you. Note that if you are devote to a Vala you have been given an object and two spells or some form of bonus as you are level 3 devote, you can also get gifts like these if you are devoted to a Maia but they might look different depending on the Maia.
Pros: You have advantage on wisdom, history, religion, medicine, arcane, and detect magic, and you have a bonus action for each turn.
Cons: Your morals are your deity´s morals, disadvantage with heavy weapons and heavy armor in one, but can have one of them.
Saving Throws: Advantage on proficiency, wisdom.
Equipment:
One melee weapon, of any kind - example; a mace or a warhammer, etc
One simple light weapon, of any kind, - example; short bow, dagger, etc
A shield and a blessed talisman (symbol)
Medium or light armor - example; scale mail, leather armor
A priest’s pack or an explorer’s pack
Standard Array:
Strength; 13
Dexterity; 12
Constitution; 15
Intelligence; 10
Wisdom; 16
Charisma; 10
Sub-Classes:
Chaos Path (trickery & darkness): This is the path of mostly Melkor but also Irmo, and their Maiar, and even rouge Maiar. Your alignments can´t be lawful as you enjoy tricking others, whether it be small harmless pranks or pulling them along and your game of manipulations is your own choice. You have advantage on deception, sleight of hand, charisma, and perception. You´re three start spells are; create illusion close, turn invincible and bestow curse.
Song Path (knowledge): You can take this path no matter what deity you choose to serve, the main purpose is to be the greatest loremaster of all there is. If you are a smith or a devoted to Aule this Sub-Class will make the most sense for you as it sparks creativity and knowledge. You can always learn more, both from a book and stories but also from your own making. You have advantage in intelligence and wisdom. You can choose two of your own three starters spells, the other is bless.
Life Path (& nature): This path is for the servants of Este, Yavanna, Vana, Orome, and Ulmo, or their Maia. Your enemies have disadvantage when attacking you. You can only wear medium armor and have medium weapons. Your three start spells are; aid, cure wound, and detect poison and disease.
Death Path: This path works if you want to be a Necromancer as a Sub-Class if you devote yourself to Melkor or Mairon, or anyone under Mairon´s service. You only take half damage from lethal blows. Namo, Nienna, and Vaire. Your three start spells are; blindness/deafness, bane, and calm emotions.
Light Path: The Valar for this path are Varda, Manwe, Irmo, Nessa, and Yavanna, and of course any Maia under them, although your deity can´t be a rouge Maia. You are an excellent healer and run straight into a fight against evil, your morals are strong and you are hard to convince. You have advantage on insight and can blind enemies one time per long rest up until level 5 where it will be three times. Your three start spells are; beacon of hope, cure wound, and detect Evil and Good.
Righteous Path (peace & order): There are two paths for this path, one where you always look for a peaceful solution and one where you head into battle at the smallest sign of unjust. You are stubborn and believe yourself always right, especially when it comes to morals. You have advantage on strength or insight depending on which deity you choose. The most suitable Valar are Tulkas, Ulmo, Manwe, Nienna, and Aule, and any form of Maiar, with similar domain. Your three start spells are; beacon of hope, bane, and aid.
Most suitable Race: All races are suitable for this class.
Druid:
Druids value nature and balance, they oppose cults and anything that might disturb Nature's balance. They accept that cruelty is a part of nature and don´t mind it unless they deem it unnatural, they sometimes lead small raids against what they deem evil and they think are destroying the balance of the world. They are often found guarding sacred places or watching over wild nature. They value bravery and the wish to protect. There are two forms of Druids, one who is worshipping nature and balance itself, and the other who worships nature through a chosen Vala, these usually resident close to temples or shrines.
Pros: Druids start out with two spells, heal wound, and earthshake ( this is a, half, weaker form of the spell with the same name in 5e, but when reaching level 8 it works the complete same way). They can use medium weapons. Most Druids have “Wild Shape”. They can speak to all animals. You can choose to start out as a level 3 devoted to either Ulmo, Orome, Irmo, Varda, Yavanna, and Vana.
Cons: Druids can´t wear metal, or heavy, armor or metal shields.
Wild Shape: To activate Wild Shape you have to be a devoted to either Ulmo, Orome, Irmo, Varda, Yavanna, and Vana.  Wild Shape is where they can change form into a chosen animal, and when reaching level 3 they can choose another animal, two in all, and when reaching level 10 a third. Some of those Druids who have Wild Shape prefer the animal form more than the humanoid one and choose to spend most of their time in it, note that when reashing level 2 you can talk through your Wild Shape. - when in Wild Shape you are using the animal you take the form of strength.
Saving Throws: Against any kind of nature spell
Equipment:
A wooden shield or any simple weapon - example; dagger, spear, sling, etc
One simple melee weapon - example; scimitar, sickle, quarterstaff, etc
Leather armor
Explorer pack
Druidic Focus
Standard Array:
Strength; 10
Dexterity; 15
Constitution; 15
Intelligence; 12
Wisdom; 14
Charisma; 10
Sub-Classes:
Rott: There Druids find beauty in rott and know it is a necessary link in the circle of life. They are fascinated by mold and fungi. Instead of restoring life these Druids have the spell animate a corpse (at what compares to level 4 even at level 1), although they don´t have any healing spells. They can choose two other spells that aren´t associated with healing and their earthquake spell is a bit more powerful.
Dreams: Dream Druids are devoted to Irmo, they start out level 3 devoted, and have the spell sleep. They can create both good and bad dreams for anyone they wish, even powerful opponents, once per long rest. They have an extra bonus action when starting a battle and two times per short rest, they also have advantage on Charisma.
Dark: The Druids who take te path of the dark are either those who have lived before the sun and moon or bear a certain mistrust of them since Beleriand clearly had no problem surviving without them. They have advantage on Wisdom, and an extra bonus action.
Land: The Druids of land are mystics and sages who keep ancient knowledge and rituals safe through storytelling. They have advantage on Charisma and they get two bonus spells.
Stars: Star Druids need to be devoted to Varda like Dream Druids need to be devoted to Irmo, this also means that they start out level 3 devoted. This class, like the dark class, misses the days of Beleriand before the sun and moon where you could see the stars clearly no matter what. They can cast dancing light and light, and all creatures who prefer the darkness will have to roll for saving throws when they cast one of these spells to see if they get frightened. They have an extra bonus action when starting a battle two times per short rest, and advantage in Wisdom.
Shepherd: These Druids care for all living creatures, even those others might see as evil. Their main focus is caring for those animals and creatures who have difficulty defending themselves. They have bonus actions and can summon any kind of passive creature matching their own level within 50 feet to fight with them when in battle.
Most suitable Race: This race works best for Elvers, Humans, Peredhels, and Maiar, although all races can play it.

Thoughts on the Valar and Maiar and their styles from someone who knows nothing about fashion beyond "diy everything".
Manwe and Varda - All white, very swoopy very fine fabrics, sometimes translucent, often skin tight with flowy skirts or sleeves. Not the most practical or comfortable looking but beautiful, white corsets and tiaras, lots of white glitter absolutely everywhere, on clothes, makeup, skin, hair, etc. Mostly minimalistic silver jewelry. White feathers appear a lot. (Wearing all white also helps to cover up the presence of bird shit on your clothes but they would never say this out loud).
Aule and Yavanna - Full on hippie look, bright colors and messy patterns, chunky jewelry with various wooden beads or gemstones, patterned headbands, large loose pants and shirts, lots of organic looking designs, goggles with tinted lenses, messy hair, usually done up in Maiar of Aule and loose in Maiar of Yavanna. Maiar of Aule also switch to leather work clothes and metal welding masks in the forges when required.
Orome and Vana - Who needs clothes anyway?? Lots of animal pelts flung hastily on, various pigments (blood) used as war paint like makeup, but otherwise not much in the way of style. Very practical clothing is favored, stuff which is loose, blends in with the forest, and is easy to move around in. They often wear animal masks carved out of wood with designs painted on.
Irmo and Este - Pastel colors, poppies are very popular both as crowns or as designs, dreamy, hazy patterns often depicting moths or owls, thick veils and shawls, long night gown like robes, bare feet or comfortable slippers, iridescent colors, pale pinks and oranges like sunsets, hazy greys, blanket like capes with moths wings on them.
Namo and Vaire - Black so dark you can't make out form, long veils that you can see nothing through, low hoods, no jewellery, no visible faces or hair or skin, dark silk gloves that are incredibly soft and make you want to take their hand, dark slippers that make no sound, the occasional glimpse of smokey breaths from behind the veil, no patterns, utter emptiness. Vaire weaves their clothes out of darkness and death itself.
Nienna - Extremely simple, drab clothing and colors, lots of greys and browns and dark greens, translucent veils which are often the only decorated part of the outfit and have patterns of weeping eyes or bones on them, thick comforting fabrics, often with hoods, the Maiar are always ready to shrug off a layer of their clothes to give to any who need it more.
Tulkas and Nessa - Clothes that lend themselves well to movement, whether that be dancing or fighting. Lots of bright reds and warm colors, often no shirts with loose pants, or close fitted sleeveless shirts. Many belts and loops to hang ribbons or weapons or maybe both from. Armored masks are often seen, in the shape of a deer to honor Nessa. Colorful ribbons and small metal charms for luck are braided into the hair.
Ulmo - Very few clothes but most are made out of dead sea animals. Skin tight suits of seal skin, shiny objects and seabird feathers as jewellery to attract fish, glittery body paint swirled around to mimic the shapes in seashells. Fish scales are sometimes stuck to the body or to clothing. Any fabrics used are rough and stiff to survive prolonged salt and sun exposure, and are thick enough to withstand stings from any sea animals. Sea urchin spines are stuck onto clothes as defense, and the most fierce Maiar have the fins and spines of dead lionfish stuck to their clothes, kept alive and potent through magic (mishaps and accidents happen much more frequently than anyone wants to admit). Extremely bright colors in everything that they wear, often for non everyday wear clothes many colorful frills and tendrils are attached to mimic the looks of certain fish and sea slugs.
Melkor - The original punk rocker of Arda. All black clothes, often form fitting, leather gloves and straps, silver or black jewellery everywhere, especially rings and piercings, teased gothic hair, masks with horrifying blank expressions and horns protruding out of them, heavy gothic or death metal makeup, metal spikes absolutely everywhere, thick heavy duty boots. Very gruesome designs often depicting severed bodyparts, bodies deformed through torture, and rotting bones. Parts of bodies are often mummified and used as accessories, especially hands, eyes, or entire heads.
Bonus third age Sauron because he was practically a Vala in his own right by then and Mordor followed his look - Steampunk, grotesque rotting bodies held together by beautifully polished metal parts, metal armor hammered into the very flesh of soldiers, lots of golds and reds, gold piercings and rings (hah), bodies half split open and their whirring mechanical insides visible through the flesh, steam rising from every surface, elegant, tight fitting black fabrics with red and gold accents.

Headcanon. Vala /Maiar have a sensitive ears. If you message their ears or nibble on them, then they will start to orgasm in no time.
Oh I adore this little headcanon. I always love it when characters have a particularly sensitive part on them that they just immediately melt at even the slightest or touches to said part
Personally, I vary the length of valar's ears ( to me, atm, námo, irmo, vana and melkor have the longer pointed ears while manwë and yavanna have the shorter pointer ears, for example ) so I'd like to think that plays a factor in it as well!
Námo's ears being sensitive? Hell yeah

So does Tolkien ever actually explain why Sauron is so strange? Lots of Maiar decided to follow Melkor, but Mairon is the only one to go and do things on his own after Morgoth’s fall and become a Dark Lord himself. Is it because any other more independently minded ones were kinda killed/ taken prisoner during the War of Wrath (WW)? The only thing I could find about Sauron and the WW is that at some point he turned and fled the fighting (the Lost Road p.333). So he technically betrayed 2 Valar, not just Aule. Whereas the Balrogs that survived/escaped still wait in hiding for their master. Why is Sauron so unmaiar-like?
Hey anon, I am so sorry for the delay in this! There were life events and then catching up on work after life events and angst events and this is super rambly and I’m not sure answers your questions well.
Also, I had no idea about S and the War of Wrath in BoLT! Thank you!!! (My BoLT knowledge is worse than terrible.)
Tolkien writes a surprising among on Sauron and spends some time discussing Sauron's motives in the Notes on Motives in the Silmarillion essay (which I love dearly, it's great). But before I get into S in particular, I do want to note that I think that most of the named Maiar we see on page are unusual, in that they enter Elven history and interact with incarnates; most Maiar don't (Annals of Aman even mentions that the number of Maiar is unknown and that few have names). Even Gandalf, in his Olorin days, would sometimes hang out among Elves without a fana, going among them invisibly (creeper). The Maiar we see tend either to be the most powerful ones and/or the ones who actively live among and interact with incarnates. Sauron is both.
(I think the power thing does make a difference in Sauron's career goals, in that he's able to pursue them. He doesn't just desire to make himself a Dark Lord but has the ability to. Pre-Morgoth, he was "chief of Aule's people" and then the chief of Morgoth's, his steward when Morgoth was imprisoned, S ruling on his own if not in his own right. Sauron is also able to concentrate his power into the Ring. (On Motives begins with Sauron was 'greater', effectively, in the Second Age than Morgoth at the end of the First.) So S had the ability as well as the will.)
As for the Maiar more generally, I don't think they have an ontological need or desire or drive to serve. A few are associated with many Valar (Melian's at various points with Vana, Este, and Yavanna; Gandalf interns with everyone; Osse, Ulmo's supposed vassal, is said by Ulmo in UT to "obey the will of Mandos, being a servant of the Doom", which imo is just fascinating and also gives us an Osse who has connections to four Valar - including Aule in this, since it was he who sent Uinen to bring Osse back from Morgoth). We also see a lot of the named ones go off and do their own thing, either actively going against the wishes of the Valar or forgetting about them (Saruman and Radagast, respectively) or just chilling on their own (Melian, who's into her husband "the tall" 😏). The Maiar are "of the same order as the Great [=Valar] but of less might and majesty," being "spirits of the same kind [...] but having less might and authority." It's a difference in degree - and the difference in power is a very great difference - but Valar and Maiar aren't fundamentally different on a metaphysical level; they’re the same species, if we can use species to describe their kind. The order of authority (Valar > Maiar > Elves > etc) is decreed, cultural, an order but one that individuals are able to go against. I don't think Sauron's going against his nature in wanting to be a Dark Lord in his own right, he himself the King of the Earth, he himself the object of cults. (Tolkien addresses the Cult of Melkor that Sauron sets up in Numenor in On Motives too, basically coming to the conclusion that it was the most expedient method for S. I'm sure our boy appreciated the drama of it too; he likes his terrible fun.)
I do think that Maiar differ in level of... individuality? personhood? personality? In that some are closer than others in their way of thinking and viewing the world to incarnates than others are, and that Sauron is at the far end of that scale. He's a character with a personality, if that makes sense? We also know that there are incarnates whose psychology he understands very well and thus can tempt them, often successfully. Gandalf says he doesn’t understand minds who don’t work like his, but Sauron clearly understands plenty of incarnate minds, and his own must work in a similar way. Sauron also has his individual quirks, such as his sense of humor, which he maintains even at the end (finding Ungoliant amusing). He’s a creator too, and a master one, even sharing Tolkien's own hobby of conlanging.
As for why S wants to rule the world: it's an outcrop of his original desire to make the world a better place by putting it in order and reforming it. Tolkien puts it better than I do in On Motives, when he's describing Sauron at the end of the Third Age:
Sauron had never reached this stage of nihilistic madness [that Morgoth did]. He did not object to the existence of the world, so long as he could do what he liked with it. He still had the relics of positive purposes, that descended from the good of the nature in which he began: it had been his virtue (and therefore also the cause of his fall, and of his relapse) that he loved order and co-ordination, and disliked all confusion and wasteful friction. (It was the apparent will and power of Melkor to effect his designs quickly and masterfully that had first attracted Sauron to him.) Sauron had, in fact, been very like Saruman, and so still understood him quickly and could guess what he would be likely to think and do, even without the aid of palantiri or of spies; whereas Gandalf eluded and puzzled him. But like all minds of this cast, Sauron's love (originally) or (later) mere understanding of other individual intelligences was correspondingly weaker; and though the only real good in, or rational motive for, all this ordering and planning and organization was the good of all inhabitants of Arda (even admitting Sauron's right to be their supreme lord), his 'plans', the idea coming from his own isolated mind, became the sole object of his will, and an end, the End, in itself.*
*[footnote to the text] But his capability of corrupting other minds, and even engaging their service, was a residue from the fact that his original desire for 'order' had really envisaged the good estate (especially physical well-being) of his 'subjects'.)
(Though I will note that Sauron absolutely lets his various foibles such as his nasty sense of humor or his aesthetic (only the black horses, pls) or cowardice or cackling villain drama occasionally override that need for order and efficiency.)
Thank you again for the ask, and I hope it explained some of my thoughts on Sauron’s peculiarities <33

Hey, what do you think of Mairon and Arien being siblings? I saw this on a few Tumblr posts and AO3, and it's really getting to me now. They both have fiery Fëar, and (I hope this doesn't confuse you):
Arien worked for Vana and potentially Yavanna (since she'd take care of Laurelin, so I just would like to think that she worked for both of the Valier (which isn't impossible since Olórin / Gandalf worked for Manwë, Nienna, Varda and Irmo)).
Also, Ilmarë and Eönwë are still considered siblings (by most of the fandom), and they work for two Valar who are married: Varda and Manwë.
So since Arien works for Yavanna and Vána, and Mairon works for Aulë, do you think that there is a possibility they could be siblings?
Oooh, that's a cool idea! They're both pretty powerful Maiar, after all, and they've got the whole fire association and light side/dark side thing going on. Thematically very juicy. Personally, I have always been completely BAFFLED by the concept that timeless spirits that spring directly from the thought of Eru can be said to be "related", but obviously that's a hang-up I need to get over, since Melkor and Manwe are canonically siblings and so are the Feanturi. This is definitely a cool enough theory for me to attempt to reconcile it, though - thanks for sharing, anon!
