The first movie was a general family favorite by now; Armageddon. They all knew it, even Libby and Izzy, so there was mostly talking and eating.
Liam: Do you ever talk? They looked at Izzy who looked back at the older dragon and nodded. Like most times they visited it was Libby that did all the talking while Izzy mostly kept to themselves and quiet. Libby: He does, just not that often, besides, I talk enough for both of us! Rylan: That’s the truth! There was a chuckle, Liam looking over at Izzy, who for once seemed to have a small smile on his face. He wondered though, what had made Izzy so quiet but decided not to push it. Liam: Maybe one day huh?
Again a nod from the younger dragon, as Liam went back to focusing more on the other ones and what they were all talking about, letting Izzy sit and listen to them as they would usually do. After a couple of hours of chatting, laughing, and random quiet moments where someone asked Izzy something until Libby answered for them as usual, Fannar and Arlo came to take their two home with them. The rest of the evening and night vanished in movies and well, way too much candy.

Why doesn't he want to sing?
A series of ID pic portraits of an imaginary Filipino cast to go with my Tagalog translation of The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals!
A version with the blue shit under the cut (cn: blood), along with some Palatawan lore
Tumblr media
From left to right, top to bottom:
Ken Davidson - third culture kid with expat parents running a ""call center"" on the sleepy little island of Palatawan
Lottie Magayon - nervous sweetheart who takes way too many smoke breaks. iglesia ni cristo. Magayon means beautiful in bikol, and is also the name of an active volcano.
Ted Jakolino - department head, but nobody calls him Sir Ted out of the office. ccf. Jakolino is making the same pun as spankoffski
Elmo Mangubat - best friend and struggling dad. mangubat = go to the forest = wood-ward
Melissa - nobody knows her last name, she's just Miss Melissa. likes cats
Emma Perez - disinherited rich kid doing a TESDA agriculture course while working at Beanie's, hates being called Ate (big sister) Emma so of course Zhoey calls her that all the time. her full name is Ma. Emmanuella de los Reyes Perez.
Enrique Ermita - kooky reclusive biology professor who is inexplicably also a heroic tenor. his students call him Prof Kiko.
Pablo Mateo - two first names. default man, palatawan born and bred. has never left and never wants to
Random fun things about Palatawan that I just want to share
The Witchwood is called Pinagputulan (the place of the cut-off things)
CCRP is one of those shady call centers that take up way more space than they're supposed to.
The Latte Hotte is the Beanie-bini (binibini)
ID: (1) a 3x3 collage of eight digital portraits that look like monochrome ID pictures: sir ken, miss lottie, sir ted, elmo, melissa, emma, prof kiko, and pablo. in the centre are the words "bakit ayaw niya kumanta?"
(2) the same collage, but all of the portraits have dark grey backgrounds except pablo, who has a cyan background. all of the characters except emma and pablo have cyan eyes and various degrees of blue gore on their faces, and all of the other characters are looking at pablo. ID ends.

Estera - Ch 15 - Wait
More blue and purple text for you as that seemed to work last time :) A dash of The Commander & The Murderbot and a sprinkle of Earth&Sky.
And yes, I laughed longer at that line than I should have.
(Previous… Prologue - Stars are Only Visible in Darkness, Estera - 1 - Colour, 2 - Dinosaur, 3 - Shoes, 4 - Thunderbird, 5 - Lesson, 6 - Safe, 7 - Gull, 8 - Deliver, 9 - Coffee, 10 - Flight, 11 - Run, 12 - Fall, 13 - Trying, 14 - Hide)
(Sofasurf’s Recrudescence which is the foundation for all of this)
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Hey, I’m up your way for a meeting next week. Maybe we could catch up? S
Oh I’m sorry, I’m taking the sleeper train to see my sister and her family.
Treviso, right? Hope you have a wonderful time!
Well remembered! I’m sorry to miss you, really bad timing.
I’m sorry!
Stop apologising! Have a Tiramisu for me 😋
Will do!
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Scott double-checked the date then closed the app and leaned on the balcony, watching the gulls land on Mateo to roost. His forehead creased with worry.
“EOS, could you look up the term dates for Estera’s school for me?”
“The current term ends in 4 weeks. Would you like the dates of the holidays and teacher training days for the next 6 years?”
“No, that’ll do. Thanks EOS.”
“I have also established that Estera Hermaszewska is marked as on sick leave and a substitute teacher has been engaged for 3 weeks starting two days ago.”
“EOS! No! You can’t just… I shouldn’t know that!”
“I thought you would want to know because you are displaying concern for her well-being. The school does not have particularly robust security on its staff records. There is a wealth of information here.”
“Stop. EOS. Please stop looking.”
“I have closed the connection. I am sorry, Scott Tracy, I did not intend to cause you distress. John will be displeased.”
Scott paused. There was a lot to unpack there, but he’d return to it later.
“I should have been more clear, it’s my fault. In future, when I ask you to find something out please would you limit your search to publicly available information unless I specifically ask otherwise?”
“Certainly. May I ask why you wish to restrict your knowledge about your friend’s welfare?”
Scott twitched slightly. “I don’t want to, exactly, but… has John discussed the concept of privacy with you?”
“He has explained we need to protect certain types of data. But I was only telling you and you are her friend.”
“Not really EOS, we barely know each other.” Another pause as he pondered how to explain. “But even if we were very good friends… part of human relationships is finding out about each other FROM each other. I should only know what she wants to tell me. To do otherwise is an invasion of privacy and would just make things… strange.”
“John knows a great deal of information about Estera Hermaszewska and they are not friends.”
Scott sighed. “John is a special case.”
“He has also informed Virgil Tracy, Tanusha Kyrano and Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward.”
“He has, has he?”
“Yes. Perhaps this is a fact he did not intend me to share with you at this time.”
“I suspect so EOS. But thank you for telling me.”
Scott headed indoors, suddenly deeply weary. Sleep was unlikely until he’d figured this one out though, so he turned his back on his own bedroom and made his way to his brother’s studio.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
His big brother had several distinct ways of knocking on his door. All were the same rhythm - Tap-te-TAP-tap - but the volume and speed would give Virgil advanced notice of what kind of mood he was in and a split second to prepare. Right now Scott was… unsure, worried about something. He made sure to add as much warmth and encouragement to his “come in Scotty” as he could.
“You always know it’s me.”
“Yep, it’s all the spy cameras I have set up… I’m kidding, Scott.” The brotherly eyebrows relaxed back into merely confused mode. “What’s up?”
“Can’t I just want to hang out?”
Virgil raised an eyebrow. Scott sighed.
“I have a bit of a…. Quandary.”
He watched his brother’s face as he explained. When he wasn’t deliberately shutting himself down, or focusing on his board meeting poker face, Scott was an open book. To Virgil at least. His expression and the intonation of his voice could provide more detail than the words did.
“It sounds like you made it clear to EOS, it shouldn’t happen again?”
“But that’s not the point. I know now. She’s sick, Virg, and I’m sure it’s something to do with… well… the same as I was. Because of meeting me. What if I made her dig all that stuff up but she doesn’t have a… a you to keep her sane while she figures it out?”
Scott paced, gesticulating wildly, and Virgil caught his arm as he passed, pulling him in for a hug. His brother was trembling with pent up energy.
“Well first off, well done for not leaping in a plane and rushing to try to fix her.”
His brother let out an explosive laugh. “You know me so well.” A pause, then more quietly “I really want to. But I know that would be weird and counter-productive. I just feel so…” he sagged “Responsible. I can’t just ignore this. I can’t just abandon her!”
“I don’t think you have to.” He pulled back a little to look up into his brother’s face. “Scott, when you were struggling but not ready to talk to us, what helped?”
“Hugs.”
Virgil squeezed him a little tighter. “What else?”
Scott broke away to recommence the pacing, palming the miniature rubix cube Virgil kept handy for him on a shelf and rattling through the algorithm to solve it. Reaching the far end of the room he spun on his heel and met Virgil’s eye.
“Two things I think. Distraction. Things to help me stay grounded. And then… knowing you were there if and when I did want to talk… but you weren’t going to force me.”
Virgil nodded.
“Can you do the same for her?”
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Why are elevator jokes so good?
Hi! Err, are they?
Because they work on so many levels!
That was awful.
Seriously, I hear better from the 6 year olds.
Aww, that was one of my best.
That does not bode well.
I am deeply wounded. 😭
Oops 🤣
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Scott shed his overcoat and face planted on to the hotel bed, well aware of the expression the overwrought Italian designer of his suit would sport if he could see such abuse. Wrinkles be damned. The way that board meeting had gone it was a miracle he’d not wrecked this latest one with blood stains. Again.
His comm pinged with a picture message. Unusual… he swiped it open.

Here is your Tiramisu. I’m afraid I ate it. I would apologise but you told me to stop doing that. Bad luck! Estera
Excellent work! 😋
Ah, now I’m hungry and have no dessert 😭
Oops 😂
You’re on the espressos?
You can’t drink cappuccino after 11am here. They’ll arrest you.
Good intel, I’ll bear that in mind next time I visit.
Have you been to Italy a lot?
Outside of rescues? No, actually! There’s no TI branch there and I guess we don’t get a lot of time to travel for pleasure.
Oh you should, it’s an incredible country.
Where would you recommend I start?
I’ll make you a list.
I look forward to it.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Scott smiled to himself. Then changed into his civvies, adding a baseball cap and his signature aviators and ventured outside.
Surely somewhere in London sold tiramisu…
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
On the train back. Finished my book already but still 9 hours to go!
Thunderbird One would do it in 3 minutes…
You just did the maths didn’t you?
Yep.
I’m guessing no restaurant carriage though? Whereas I am now going to go sit and enjoy the view with a coffee and some kind of delicious pastry.
… TB One does lack pastries.
I bet your brother has plenty of room for pastries in Two… 😈
Be right back.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Scott, did Thunderbird One just fly over my train?
… maybe 😁
?????
Alan needed to get some more flight hours…
And I wanted pastries.
So we are in Paris getting takeaway.
The fuel for those things is cheap right?
Sure.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Back at school today - the kids say hi :) I don’t know why they think I have some kind of hotline to the head of International Rescue but they won’t be dissuaded.
Hi right back atcha kids 👋
Atcha? What kind of a word is that?
An… American… one?
I don’t think it’s valid here.
Let me try again.
Good afternoon, esteemed juvenile citizens. I extend my compliments for your respective health and happiness.
You are no longer allowed to talk to the children 😏
Aw shucks 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Mateo was never more grateful that he'd decided to take suppressants this heat week than when he heard about what had happened to Seth. He was supposed to be working for the rest of the day but news travelled fast in the castle and there were a few people talking about it that Mateo happened to overhear. The thunderbird blanched and nearly dropped the book in his hand, fumbling to catch it. He was a little shocked and definitely saddened but almost before those feelings could register his mind jumped to Rhys. There was no doubt in Mateo's mind that he needed to go to him and as fast as he could. He put up a hasty sign on his desk, something to the effect of not being able to check out books today but people were welcome to browse, before he raced off to Rhys' office. There was a chance Rhys would be in his suite but he was more likely to be at work so Mateo figured he'd check there first.
Reaching the door in record time, he knocked on it hard, knowing Rhys would have found out before he did. "Rhys? I'm comin' in." The warning was really only so Rhys could drop whatever warding he'd put up since Mateo was already getting out the key he'd been given and unlocking the door. He was through it a moment later, shoving it closed behind him and automatically pulling Rhys into a tight hug. "I just heard. I'm so sorry, mano." He swallowed hard and just held onto the witch, knowing there wasn't much he could do to help but just wanting to be there for him regardless.

Ibuki had started learning how to make nectar and wine in his free time with the hope of being able to sell his own when he was done with school. Following his dad's advice he had taken courses in accounting so he could manage himself. But also had some help from his dad to begin with.
Kaylin on the other hand, had finally decided that she wanted to be a journalist and took summer classes to get into the courses she wanted for the final year of college.
Watching the six teens, soon young adults sitting in the living room, Emil just smiled as he brought them their snacks for the evening. If he was honest, Ye-Min had been with them so much now, that she felt a little like one of his kids, even though he knew she wasn’t.
She did call both of them uncles by now, so they were family at least. Kaylin and Ibuki often came over as well so he had the thing he once only dreamed of having, a family, one that felt just right. Feeling a familiar hand in his, he looked over at Flynn who smiled back at him.
Flynn: I think we did okay with them don’t you? Emil. Yeah, I wonder what their life has in store for them. Flynn: Ups and downs is my guess. But they are lucky, they have their family and friends to fall back on when they need to.
Emil nodded, they knew their kids would come back to them if something bothered them, and that was something he was happy about. Rylan often talked with Chris as well as them, while Tyvan often talked with his grandpa River if his parents weren’t home and he needed an answer.

Been thinking abt the werewolf au again
This is a summary, some details are still being worked on and fleshed out. Some details are left out of the summary entirely.
Butcher is a werewolf. Only the SOE and Callum are aware.
Turns out there’s a secret underground ring trying to find out how to mass-weaponize werewolves and the original operators (potentially plus a few) go to investigate under Butcher’s orders. They go in for intel and divvy up and it looks like things are going without a hitch, until something goes wrong and the messed up forcefully partially-turned lab rat werewolf gets out and many personnel are killed by this thing.
The TFV ops know something is up and try to evacuate. But it breaches the main confinement area and ends up cornering Lucas. He gets bit and one of the team members finds him as it happens and they manage to kill the thing. Freaked out, they panic and use a nearby radio to call for emergency evac.
Immediately upon seeing Lucas, butcher knows based on smell alone and isolates Lucas in a medical ward. He breaks the news and Lucas doesn’t believe at first. But then once Butcher gives a whole monologue and stuff he is convinced, and he has a whole crisis.
Glossing over some plot and training stuff but after some time (a few months at least) the other three (Arthur, Wade, and Polina) sneak out to find out what butcher is hiding off base in the woods. Of course during the full moon. They hear screaming in the distance and go to find out what the HELL is happening because somebody is seriously getting hurt by the sound of it. And then it sounds seriously nasty and inhuman.
Mateo wakes up to find Wade missing and goes to find him.
Once way out in the woods, the main three come across debris on the ground- blood, tattered ropes, broken off branches, and shredded fabric. That’s when they realize the sounds stopped. And then something comes out of the bushes.
They get attacked (not bitten) and are trying to kill this thing while trying not to get hurt themselves. Wade tries to get it away from the others and gets himself injured (again, he is not bitten) and cornered. He, Arthur, and Polina have spent their pistol ammo trying to nail this thing by now but it moves way too fast and it’s too dark to get it. It’s about to bite down on Wade, but a gun fires and a bullet rips a hole in its ear. It stumbles off of Wade and turns around in a daze to face the bastard who shot it- Mateo.
In a fit of rage and pain it lashes out and goes for him. It’s dark and hard to see so his aim is poor, and this thing is FAST. And before he knows it, it’s got its teeth in his shoulder. He’s pinned down and getting chewed on. He very poorly aims his pistol up and manages to blast a hole in the thing’s arm. It lets go and runs off. Or. Limps, I guess.
Bloody, bruised, and terrified, they haul Mateo back to base for emergency care for his wounds, not knowing what’s just happened or that this was his last night as a normal human.
Again, this is a ROUGH SUMMARY and some things are bound to change, details are bound to be added or removed as needed. The general idea will remain the same.

In the aftermath of Meridian and the fight against the Archon, the crew of the Tempest finds their footing in Andromeda. Being pathfinder never came with a manual, but with six races depending on the young Talis Ryder to find them all a home, she wishes for one more every day. Not to mention trying to keep them from being at each others throats, a whirlwind romance, a brother who's turning out to be more trouble than he's worth and a plot against the Nexus, something's got to give.
And Talis is afraid it might be her.
A collection of stories about Pathfinder Ryder as she discovers herself and the cluster amid the political upheaval of an adolescent galaxy.
[set post-mass effect andromeda.] [female ryder/jaal ama darav, male ryder/cora harper]
chapter specific warnings: vomit mention, general sickness. whump.
-
February 25th, 2821 [1 year and 11 months since arrival to Andromeda] - Nexus Wards.
Logs: Mateo Sirius Ryder-Lucero
Mateo has thought about how this conversation would go at least three or four times since he left the Nexus nursery center, and it’s weighing him down more and more the closer he gets to Talis’ apartment. He only really has so many options and so far, the lint in his pockets and the hair product sticking to his fingers do not hold the answers that he needs. She’s pissed at him (rightfully so), as far as he knows, still hasn’t spoken to Cora after she overrode her order back on Voeld (arguably rightfully so), and the lack of having emotional stability through Jaal being gone had everyone on the Tempest walking on eggshells.
(He cannot wait for his future brother-in-law to get back. The sooner he can either get to her or get her to visit Lexi for a psych eval, the sooner everyone would be happy -- Talis included)
Whether he disagreed with her or not (he did) right now he needed to apologize. Just so he didn’t make everything worse than it already was. So after he'd dropped Ahri off with one of the attendants, he'd quickly made the trek out to the Nexus Presidium, considering both exactly what he was apologizing for (probably for insubordination and generally being a bit of a dick), and considering how she'd respond (probably not well). Little fires everywhere that he'd been ignoring for too long, too quick to get off of med-watch to realize his sister was drowning in responsibilities she wasn’t prepared for. Almost two years out from when they'd arrived in Andromeda, and regardless of her titles, Talis was still only twenty four. Same as him. Neither of them with any major 'leading' experience (they'd both held jobs on the Citadel like any other teenager, but. Well. False equivalent), and neither of them had done anything like this. The only other Pathfinder that had the necessary experience to be leading anyone was Raeka (he thinks that was her name), but everyone turned to his sister for help.
Talis only had so much help to give. Only had so much advice lying around before she was forced to say she didn't know, and if there was one thing his incredibly driven sister was horrible at, it was saying she didn't know how to do something.
Her newly discovered short fuse however was likely the direct consequence of this. He remains unsurprised, but her blowing up at him after the Tempest had rescued him from Voeld was new. And he wasn't exactly sure if he liked this new side of her. He was glad she wasn't as shy anymore, probably a good trait to shed as a Pathfinder, but perhaps he was just a smidge afraid of her now.
He probably hadn’t helped adding to her mounds of problems and causing her a shitton of stress on top of it. Who knew most people didn’t enjoy high stakes rescue missions in the middle of blizzards to find their twin brother when he wasn’t ever supposed to leave the station?
(According to Cora, most people knew this already. Go figure.)
When he buzzes the door to her apartment, she doesn’t answer immediately. Unusual for her, she usually came to the door as soon as she was able or would buzz him in at least. Frosty then. Ok. He could work with frosty.
(He should've brought food -- his mother would hit him upside the head with a sandal if she were awake.)
He rocks back and forth on his heels, considering whether he should come back later. She could still be in her meeting with Kandros and Addison from earlier, God knew those usually ran long. But he didn't really want to run all the way back to operations, and he imagines he'd look horribly pathetic waiting for her outside her apartment door like a lost puppy.
Which...is a weird way to refer to himself. Still the mental image works, but if he has to play the part of pathetic younger brother to get back on her good side, then so be it. He wasn't exactly above it at least.
He waits a few more minutes, checking the time, shoving his hands into his jacket pocket. He reaches the end of his hoodie string into his mouth, typing off a message to his sister before his SAM implant buzzes to life in his ear.
“SAM?” He asks around the endcap, “Where’s Talis?”
"Talis' implant has been dysfunctional for some time now. I have been primarily focused upon keeping her both conscious and stable. While my systems did not go dark, I am in a brief moment of human 'clarity'."
"What?" Mateo chews on the fabric, heart stopping and starting again as he processes the information, "Why would her implant be in the fritz? I mean, I know she took a hit or two on Voeld, but --"
"Mateo, we do not have long," SAM continues, and while he's incapable of changing his tone of voice, Mateo does not like the way he's enunciating his words, "Talis has been made gravely ill. Her interior systems are deteriorating as we speak."
"What?" Mateo asks again, this time spitting out the hoodie string, "Injured? Shit, SAM where is she?"
The door slides open before him and he rushes inside. He does a sweeping glance of the apartment, the kitchen empty and almost barren, her bedroom empty with only a few scattered pieces of clothing to even clue him in she may be home somewhere. Not in the bathroom, though the medicine cabinet is strewn open, with a bottle of painkillers left uncapped on the counter. A bucket lies on it’s side on the tile, water spilling out of it. Considering it hasn't dried yet, this was still recent.
His heart is racing as he doubles back, scanning the ground. Tile, tile, tile. He's beginning to hyperventilate almost, calling her name a few times. She doesn't answer, and he runs around a corner into her office fast enough to smack his hand against it. No one. Then he darts into the living room, catching a glimpse of the dirty blonde hair of his sister laid out in the middle, curled in on herself.
"Shit, shit, shit, shit..." Mateo mutters under his breath, pushing the coffee table out of the way, dropping to his knees to roll her over, carefully cradling her in an arm, "SAM--?"
"I have briefly relinquished control of her bodily systems to make contact with yourself and Dr. T'Perro. Most of my primary attention has been diverted onto keeping away the worst symptoms, but her illness is progressing faster than I can keep up," SAM answers in his ear, "She needs help, Mateo."
"I...I can see that, SAM," He says. Okay, as much as he’s panicking right now, he has to do a rudimentary status report. Talis is burning up beneath his fingers, barely clothed in a damp Initiative tank top that clings to her skin and shorts that are stained with what he thinks is vomit. He really hopes the few red stains are old as he brushes the hair that sticks to her face out of the way. She's flushed and somehow shivering under his touch, breathing labored. Her eyes flutter open for a moment, auburn orbs unfocused and glassy. She's not all there, and doesn't answer for a moment if she does recognize he’s here, head lolling to the side into Mateo's abdomen, "Tali, can you hear me? Sis, what happened? Are you okay--?"
She squints her eyes closed again against the light of the Nexus’ day cycle, voice crackling and rough, "Dad?"
Mateo's blood runs cold at that, and his voice creeps up an octave, "SAM, what's her base temp?"
"Her temperature spiked to almost 40 Celsius this morning, though I am working to lower it," SAM reports, "Hallucinations and confusion are not uncommon with fevers this high and consistent."
"Yeah...yeah that definitely sounds about right," Mateo squeaks out, glancing around for water, her freezer, whatever he thinks might cool her down, "What happened SAM? She seemed fine a couple days ago and now she just collapses middle of the day?"
"I am recognizing it as a toxin, though I am unsure of what origin, but it has damaged my reach over her physiological systems. With that, it has begun poisoning her, targeting organs and threatening to shut them down. Regardless, it seems the more I try to take back my control, the more I am pushed out. A virus perhaps, created specifically to target me and fatally wound the pathfinder."
"That--I don't...when did it even happen?"
"I am unsure. I can trace when symptoms began in earnest to about two days ago, but I could not pinpoint when exactly she became ill. Originally her symptoms seemed to have pointed to the common cold or influenza, but as they continued to worsen and become more severe, this became less of the case. If this virus is capable of shutting down the parts of her body I can control, then her body likely will end up in shock without my major involvement.”
Mateo’s head is spinning, and he barely understands what SAM is spitting back at him. He’s not a doctor, never has been, but he does understand that his twin is on the wrong side of ill. Poisoned, he can’t even begin to wrap his head around that one. Four days ago they’d been on Voeld, when the Tempest had come to rescue him. They’d only spent minimal time in one of of the raider camps, convinced they were friendly (or at least neutral) at the time. But…
Talis has been the only person he hadn’t had an eye on the whole time they were there in the ice shelf. But then again, they’d been taking care of something on Kadara prior to that. Elaaden even before that. All places that’d make sense if they’d hurt her with the concentration of exiles and possibly left over Roekaar. He has more than enough questions about that, but he can go over those concerns with Lexi when she gets here. If she gets here in time. He gently lays her back down to scuttle to his feet and rustle through her freezer for ice or water, fingers stinging against the cold shock and pulse throbbing in between his ribs, “SAM, ideas? When’s Lexi going to get here?”
“ETA 12 minutes, she is bringing a small emergency team with her,” He answers, “It is not advised to cool her down too fast, Mateo.”
“I know, I know,” He says. SAM’s right, he needed to cool her down but not shock her. He'd do more damage that way, and the last thing he needed was to put her in any more pain than she already was in. He learned that much in basic. He drops the ice in favor for a cold water bottle, shutting the fridge and quickly walking back to the living room, “Other ideas then? Did she take anything for it before this happened?”
“She had been lucid up until an hour ago. I requested she take a form of acetaminophen for both her fever and bodily aches, she said she would soon. Unfortunately, her fever spiked and she began vomiting again soon after — she had been laying here for almost fifteen minutes before you arrived. I had contacted Dr. T’Perro, you were already on your way,” SAM says. That answered why the pills were on the counter abandoned, and Mateo’s starting to put together a rough chain of events, “I have running theories upon what may be ailing her, but symptoms are not consistent to what I have already been aware of. I have concerns it may be Andromedan in origin or perhaps entirely synthetic.”
Mateo tilts her head up enough to laying against his shoulder when he kneels down again. She groans as he parts her lips, sitting her up to be careful to keep her from choking on the water he’d found, “Is it contagious?”
“The crew aboard the Tempest reports no symptoms, alien and human alike. While I am not directly patched into you, I have not detected any of the same symptoms or changes within you. No reports of endemic level infections on any of the planets she had visited in the past week either. This was likely deliberate, and targeted. Considering the pathfinder’s more recent activities on Kadara, her immune system was already compromised. If I did not still have some extensive control over her and was actively suppressing the worst of this ailment, she would likely already be—“
“Okay, thanks SAM, but I really don’t want to think about that right now,” Mateo cuts off the AI before he can even mention the idea of Talis being dead or dying. Three times was enough in his opinion, and he wasn’t around for those times, but he’d rather not be around for the fourth. Mateo refused to admit to being scared of a lot of things, but losing his sister again was definitely one of them.
Talis is at least capable of sipping down a few gulps of water before beginning to cough. And with her coughing comes her retching onto the rug beneath them after turning her head away from him. Barely a glance and he can tell its tinged just enough with red and bile that whatever she’s working with is doing far too much for him to fix on his own right now. He considers going back to her medicine cabinet for an antiemetic, but then again he’s not sure if he’d do more damage that way.
Goddamn it, he was never sure about these things and right now, he really wished he was, “Have you called Jaal yet?”
“Jaal is still out of contact, though I have pushed a message through to his omni tool. Likely he is still on his mission and will be unavailable for some time.”
“Great. That’s just great.” Mateo responds sarcastically, biting down on his lip. He really needed someone who was more resourceful here.
He hates feeling powerless, unable to diagnose and unable to help. He can clean later but right now he holds his sister close as she still mumbles for their father. He wishes someone else was here to tell him what to do, someone tangible. Someone like Suvi might know what plant or whatever might’ve caused this, someone like Cora would have some sort of plan in place already, but Mateo doesn’t know anything. Even Jaal might've been better, it might give some comfort to his sister knowing her partner was at her side.
But no, he was gone for a few more days on a Resistance operation.
He’s been out of the outpatient medcenter for maybe two months at this point and arguably, he’s already been tossed headfirst into the fire. He was barely a private by the time they left Andromeda, and his inexperience is shining like a badge as he leans the cool bottle against Talis’s forehead. She leans into his touch, not unlike a child, and whimpers. He needed someone else here, literally anyone else who might know what his next move should be. Even Talis would likely know what to do, and she was the one who was currently out of commission.
(Oh why didn’t he just go into biotech like his mom wanted him to?)
“Please, please, please, just stay awake Tali,” Mateo begs, moving the water bottle back to her neck when her eyes shut for a moment. That seems to bring some more coherency back to her briefly as she relaxes back into the cool comfort of it, though her eyes are threatening to flutter back closed, “C’mon Tali, at least stay awake until Lexi can get here.”
“Mm, Dad, I’m — still here. Don’ go.” Talis’ voice is small and weak, weaker than he’d heard her in years, “Don’ leave me.”
“I’m not going anywhere, I promise.” Mateo answers back. To some extent, he’s curious what she’s seeing, what she’s thinking about. But the other part of him that’s terribly superstitious at times does not like what it implies, "I'm here, I'm here, I'm here."
Lexi arrives sometime later, he isn't sure how much later, the door to the apartment sliding open and Mateo jerking himself and Talis by accident, the latter of whom retches again onto the rug. Lexi’s not alone at least, with two others who carry a stretcher behind them. Her expression is already grim, brow bones furrowed and a deep frown across her face. She kneels down next to the pair, Mateo instinctively holding her closer.
“SAM already filled me in on my way here. We’ll take her to the Garson Memorial facility and contact some of our Angaran ambassadors — her scans don’t make me believe that whatever she ingested was Milky Way made,” The Asari confirms, waving her own scanner over Talis while a human and Turian come around his right, "Talis, can you hear me?"
When she doesn't immediately, instead squeezing her eyes shut against the light of Lexi's scanner, Lexi sighs. The Turian picks up the coffee table and discards it into the kitchen, while the human lays down the stretcher in it’s place. Mateo freezes in place, unsure of what to do next while so much goes on around him. A beam extends from the side of the bed, the human EMT quick to prepare what he thinks is an IV to hook up to Talis. Mateo hesitates to let go of his sister, in his right mind he knows they’re here to help and knows she’ll be fine but the last time he let her out of his sight…
So much has gone wrong. And he wasn't there for any of it to help. And he's about to be again if they take her away.
“Iz that—mom?” Talis warbles, her head turned towards Lexi. Her distress is more evident now, every wheezing breath she takes accompanied with the quivering that’s beginning to shake them both is scaring him more and more. Now that she can’t even differentiate between the ship’s doctor and their own mother, can’t differentiate between himself and their father, he just wants to know what’s happening. Wants SAM to shut her down again and just reboot her good as new, as much as that’s a pipe dream and would just as likely kill her outright, “Mom?”
“Mateo,” Lexi’s voice snaps him out of his panic, her cerulean eyes pinned on him. She seems to ignore Talis calling for her, though her stern look is starting to bleed into concern, “We’ll stabilize her and keep you updated on her condition, but we need to go now if we have any intention of getting her to the med center before she gets any worse.”
He allows himself one more second, cupping the side of her face with his free hand before relinquishing his grasp on his twin. The EMTs are as careful as they can be with her, the IV inserted and a monitor with her vitals appearing on her side when they attach it to her. The rest of the time that Lexi and her team are there blur into mush, as they ask questions and roll her back out of the apartment. Mateo does his best to answer with SAM filling in a lot of the major gaps, and makes a mental note to do his best on cleaning whenever he gets back, make sure to take care of what he can.
He walks alongside them as their brisk pace, an ambulance waiting for them and a small crowd beginning to form in the complex hallway. She’s rolled into the back of the skytruck, and one of the EMTs offers him a hand to pull him up. He takes it, hands shaking as he sits to her right.
Lexi is quick and efficient, attaching monitor after monitor to her. SAM assists her, rattling off reports. The sound of the EKG is what he thinks will haunt him after this, though. Talis had told him once that her prior two deaths were quick, like moments of being unconscious. She couldn't tell that she'd died, that she was dying. SAM had only given her a brief warning beforehand the second time, the third was quick and unable to have been predicted. The first, the first had been what had startled him most when she recounted it to him, her legs pulled up to her chest and almost at a whisper when he'd asked in the medbay.
She had been panicking. Had been terrified out of her mind.
Once the heart monitor is attached, the rapid and erratic beeping fills the back of the truck. Lexi glances at it, knitting her brows and quickly administering more medication after that discovery. He can't quite swallow around the lump in his throat, wondering if she's panicking now in her own mind. Wondering if she was, alone in her apartment and barely able to breathe. Likely hunched over a bucket, incapable of deciphering which was up or down or even who was right in front of her?
Why hadn't she called him? Texted him that she wasn't feeling well?He would've come running, even though he knows that thinking about this now wouldn't change the past. He knows the real answer, and doesn't like it much. Wish Talis stopped believing it.
Only SAM had known about this, and likely Talis had sworn him to some degree of secrecy. Mateo knew better than anyone Talis hated having people worry about her.
"God, you gotta stop doing this, Tali," Mateo whispers, throat scratchy and eyes burning, taking hold of her hand in between two of his own. Lexi diverts her eyes, carefully attaching an oxygen mask to her, "Gotta stop scaring me, gotta stop pulling the shittiest parlor tricks."
She doesn't acknowledge what he says, but her eyes are still open. Still flickering around the truck. They land on him briefly, lidded and dark, but at least he can live with the peace she's alive. She's still alive. And for all it's worth, will stay alive.
Because God knows he doesn't know what he'd do without her.

"Alcina!"
A voice called after her.
"Alcina!!"
She was really in no mood to be bothered. She had just had a most rewarding night with you, and now bloody what.
Turning on her heels with a prominent eye-roll, there trotting after her on the cobblestone street was Angie.
Oh. Wonderful.
Her face was alight with glee, for what she didn't know, nor was she so sure she wanted to. Whenever something concerned Angie, it was likely mayhem or destruction. Or hurt feelings. Not hers, of course.
With a huff to ward off her annoyance, Alcina offered a small smile and considered the much shorter, raggedy blonde now in front of her.
"Yes, dear Angie?"
"It's Victoria's fledgling," she grinned wide, "he's done it again! That's what, the fifth, or sixth human kill offense?"
Fuck.
She blinked hard and sighed once more.
"Bring him and Victoria to the council chamber hall immediately," Alcina commanded with an authoritative voice that sent a thrilling shiver down Angie's spine, "alert the other council seats, they are to be present as well. I shall not be long."
With a sharp turn she was off.
Angie wiggled her eyebrows excitedly at Alcina's word, a knowing smile creeping up on her lips as the remaining scent of you was clinging to the Matriarch like a thunder cloud as she walked away. Still, that was something else. Tonight, er, this morning, blood would be shed!
Off like a dash she went to round everyone up.
The council chamber hall was large and very reminiscent to a gothic cathedral. The pillars were tall, built from the ground to the ceiling, filling the large domed area with an ominous presence. In the middle was a large rectangular sunken floor, surrounded by 3 wide steps to the higher level, which, to one side lead up to the highest platform; a large seat against the large stone wall for the reigning Monarch at the time to sit during meetings such as this, and standing room for the other 10 council members.
Along the long, large four walls were tapestries painted depicting scenes of the many wars, the only one without bloodshed was the one where the Monarch sat. It depicted the peace treaty and alliance that was settled under Alcina's reign. Many regarded it as the most important, as it should sit above any and all Monarchs henceforth.
The long chamber was now filled with the council members and any other lycan or vampire who wished to view the trial. Word didn't sit idle underground, so damn near the whole city was packed into the room.
Everyone was buzzing very quietly to themselves. The two on trial were in the middle of the sunken floor, accompanied by two lycan guards, Gerard and Mateo, appointed by Alcina.
Victoria and the offender stood side by side, the offender chained by his wrists.
The hushed whispers and commentary were interrupted by the sound of pronounced heels clicking on the stone floors, the impending arrival of the Matriarch silencing everyone as the hush echoed loudly.
Alcina stepped into the chamber through the large dark archway with her daughters in file behind her. She was wearing a black dress, very similar to the white one she wore for council meetings, and her large brimmed hat. The girls mirrored their mother's fashion by donning black flowing dresses with plunging necklines. Each of them silent, unlike their mother.
With shallow nods to the vampires and lycans who offered them as she passed, she glided up the steps like wind, nodded to the council members, Donna the most embellished, and took her seat. Her girls stood in the wings.
She was truly a terrifying sight. Her beauty unmatched, her grand stature, her height, and wicked look upon her face.
Yes. She was the epitome of a ruthless Matriarch.
Eying Victoria and her fledgling, Alcina lifted her head just slightly and basked in the utter silence.
"Victoria Braithwaite," she stated, her melodious voice ringing through the hall, "it has come to my attention that Matthew Torrence, your fledgling, continues to disobey our laws. How do you plead?"
She was a scrawny thing. Strawberry blonde hair, plain, yet striking blue eyes. She shifted on her feet and stepped forward.
"Lady Dimitrescu, please, consider leniency. He is my first fledgling."
Alcina raised her brow unamused.
"First or fiftieth, you know the laws," she said, tilting her head towards Donna, "how many offenses are we aware of?"
"Seven, my Lady Dimitrescu."
Donna's answer sent a rustling of whispers through the crowd and Alcina cleared her throat, silencing it immediately.
"That is four offenses over the limit, Victoria. I ask you again; how do you plead?"
The young vampire at Victoria's side looked to her as if hoping for a lie. He was also scrawny, but his face held trickery and something else Alcina didn't like.
"How do you plead?" Alcina's voice became louder and sharp.
Victoria startled and looked back at the Matriarch, "G-guilty, My Lady."
Silence settled in harder than before, all eyes now on Alcina awaiting her ruling.
She rose slowly and stepped forward to the steps, looking down on the two vampires with an unreadable expression.
"Then it is my duty to judge accordingly; death by sun for the fledgling. As it is apparent he cannot be controlled or taught. Mateo please escort - "
By some wild insanity and ignorance the young vampire snarled and lunged at Alcina.
No one could be sure what was heard first; the collective gasps, the yank of the chain around his wrists, Daniela, Cassandra and Bela shrieking as they fled forward to protect their mother, or Alcina meeting him head on in full blood-rage form.
Slashing, screeching, and gurgling rang out through the chamber. She sliced him to complete ribbons with her claws, eyes as black as her dress, that color the only thing from showing the splattering of blood all over her clothing. Her pale grey skin however displayed it proudly as she stood over his body, twitching, and eventually slumping still as blood gushed with one more surge from his mangled throat.
Those black eyes peered over to Victoria who was stumbling away from the towering Monarch, her own wide with fear.
Alcina didn't move, still slightly hunched from the kill, merely watching her as she tumbled her way to a cold stone step and stayed solid as a rock.
"I say this once, and only once to all in this room..." her tone was icy and gravely, "our laws are not to be trifled with. Follow them. Or meet the same fate as this pitiful excuse for a vampire."
Angie was chuckling as quietly as she could on the sidelines, Karl was repositioning his hat, Donna was standing unmoved and tall, and Salvatore was already slithering off through the side door.
"Mateo, Gerard, throw his body in the sun tower," she commanded flatly as she began to transform back to some normalcy.
They nodded in compliance. Alcina returned the nod, hiked up her dress gently, stepped over the blood pooling on the floor and took leave herself. Her daughters were right behind her.
"Is everyone just like, losing their collective minds down here, or what?" Angie asked nudging Mitch, "who the fuck thinks it's a good idea to challenge the Matriarch. I mean, that's two vamp deaths in like, two-ish months. Maybe Alcina is just on a roll, I love it when she's on a roll, she can kill anyone in front of me any day, she's such a boss ass bitch."
"Ang," Donna said gently walking towards the group, "please... these really are serious matters, could you try to at least pretend to be a quiet, somewhat reverent council member?"
"Look, we all know I am many things, many many things, all of which are not quiet or reverent. And that's why I'm so loved."
The only one not trying to hide their eyeroll was Karl.
"Listen pixie dust storm, we're all very aware."
Angie cackled again and took off on her own in a flash.
Donna, Mitch, and Karl stood at the back watching the guards dragging off the mess of what was a body. Victoria had dashed as soon as Alcina took her eyes off her, and everyone else was filing out, off to continue their gossip and lives as if nothing had happened.
The city was exceptionally silent as she walked her way back to the manor, even with her girls in tow. Alcina was trying to dab away the remaining blood on her exposed chest, face, and neck with a handkerchief Bela had offered her. It didn't seem to be doing much good.
The girls were nervously eying each other behind her.
Blood-rage usually took several hours to come down from, however their mother had seemed to put it to bed in a matter of minutes.
That wasn't normal.
Without a word they deduced this had to do with you. The changes taking place in their mother over the last generous two months was easily apparent to them. They hoped it wasn't so for too many others here in the underground.
Alcina had hardly touched any blood wine in weeks. She was mellow. Sedate, even. And yet she was softer and more prevalent in giving them all affection than she had been in many years. It was wonderful, but it was also concerning.
As they entered the large gates and wafted through the courtyard, Alcina opened the front door and allowed them in before her with a wave of her hand, accompanied by a pleasantly soft smile.
"Are you turning in for the day, girls?" she questioned taking off her hat.
They exchanged some glances and nodded.
"Yes, I think so mother," Cassandra answered.
Alcina mused on her reply with a hum.
"Well, sleep sound my darlings," that low timbre cooed, reaching out to kiss them all on their foreheads, admiring each beautiful face with a sweet grin, "I shall see you come evening."
"You too, mama," Daniela replied slipping her arms around her waist, holding her tightly.
The other two joined the embrace and Alcina hummed warmly, that smile growing wider.
"My sweet daughters... now, off to bed with you. Rest."
~
Karl was puffing on another cigar; this was easily his third in an hour.
He was tinkering with another contraption that had been shelved for a while. He couldn't really remember why, until the rogue wire he was trying to reconnect shocked the ever-loving shit out of him. The whole thing sparking and puffing out tiffs of smoke.
"Shit! Piss! Motherfucker!" he spat shaking his hand after jerking it away.
"Son of a bitch - now I remember, you piece of hunkin', fuckin', piss-ant, no good -"
Continuing to throw and grumble expletives while rubbing his hand, he kicked the thing off his bench, mumbling and murmuring, unaware of the presence now watching from the door of his shop.
Donna was smiling only gently leaning up against the door, one arm folded under her chest while the other tried to hide the grin.
"I see nothing has changed much in this shop of yours," she offered.
His head snapped up and a large puff of smoke left his lips, his good hand scratching the stubble on his cheek.
"Yeah well, some hunks of junk just can't be fixed either," he kicked it one more time for posterity.
She chuckled as then neatly folded her hands behind her back, "may I?"
"Of course."
Karl grabbed two chairs that were the least dirty and plopped them together in the cleanest area of his shop, taking a seat himself, legs splayed and slumping.
"Why are you still up this late?" Donna asked, resting a little uneasy on the chair.
He eyed her with another puff of his cigar. He knew where this was going.
"Why are you up this late."
Wasn't a question. He knew why she was here.
Donna sighed. Eyes trailing off to settle on an unknown object for rest, an anchor for the time being while her thoughts tried to dismantle the tangle.
"I'm worried about her."
Karl sat still.
"I don't know how to help her."
"I'm not really sure what you want me to say," he said quietly, "the door is shut tight?"
She peered back to him and nodded quickly.
At her affirmation he scooted closer and hunkered his forearms on his legs, "Spill, D."
"You saw what happened tonight. I don't know if anyone else noticed. But her control, her strength, it's double what it used to be. She killed that boy with a finesse I've never seen from her, and I've known her for long enough, I..." Donna's tone dropped off, her face growing slightly severe, "it's that human," her voice now a whisper, "there is something about that human. I don't know what she is, but she has changed Alcina. I don't know how. But I have never seen a vampire recover that quickly from blood-rage, Karl, never."
He had to chew on her words. Yes, he'd seen it.
"Well... I don't know what to tell ya, D."
"Tell me you're with us, with me, with her, if something happens," Donna shot off quickly, "tell me I can trust you, and your men, if something goes awry, no matter what it is."
Karl could feel the apprehension radiating off the slender woman, her fear and uncertainty closer to the surface than he can ever recall. He didn't understand the whole of vampires, wouldn't even pretend to, but he knew where his loyalties were. He and his men didn't swear allegiance to Alcina lightly. She had proven herself to him, to them, over and over and they would die by her side. They would protect her, whatever that entailed.
"Of course. We're with you."
~
It was 10 AM when you finally got out of bed. Alcina had drank a lot from you last night. You weren't complaining. But damn you were sore, and kind of tired.
You turned on the light as you entered the bathroom and eyed your naked body with a grin. The faint pricks in the shape of her teeth were scattered all over you. A hum of satisfaction rumbled in your throat and you started the shower.
The desire inside you to pay her back all the pleasure she had given you was growing insatiable. Sex was usually so cheap for you; never had a partner that connected deeply enough, never satisfying the need you had. But her? The two of you hadn't even had sex and you'd had more pleasure than you could possibly account for.
But this was so much more than the physical bliss.
She had invigorated and stimulated every sense within you. Made you think, made you dream, made you alive and eager for life.
That was a fucking miracle.
Who knew a vampire, a creature of the undead, could make you feel life.
All you wanted was make her feel the same way.
Your day was slow and so were you.
Perhaps you'd both been a little more vigorous than you should have been.
Oh well.
The contented state you found just watching the cloudy day go by was easy; the sun shifted here and there through the clouds until they all seemed to scatter and hide permanently behind the reaching brick buildings. The blue of the heavens was pale and soft and you felt the heaviness in your eyelids tip over slowly.
Your bean bag chair cuddled you up and the lights went out.
In the darkness there was a familiar glow of golden eyes, half lidded and glorious. Calm. Tender, for whom they belonged.
It was quiet.
It was peaceful.
You felt protected even when she wasn't around.
A cool caress pulled you oh so carefully from your slumber and soon you were looking back into those eyes you loved so much. But now they were grey; deep skies of thunder and rain. So beautiful.
"Alcina..." you whispered, a smile quickly appearing as your bearings came back into focus. The view outside your balcony door was much different. Black skies, orange light beaming up and out of the architecture. You sighed.
"Well shit, seems I slept the day away."
She was softer looking than usual; a light grey jacket tonight, long, not form fitting in the slightest. But the usual black pants, and shorter, ankle height black heeled boots.
What a fucking vision.
This woman could grace the cover of one fashion magazine and ruin it for every other model in living, breathing existence.
Alcina couldn't help the toothy grin as she peered down at you, your eyes alight despite your weary nature.
"Mmm, I am not surprised in the slightest. I may have been a little too greedy with you last night, draga mea," she smoothed the air with her voice, outstretching a slender hand, "come... I have just the thing."
Her body reacted tenderly to your grasp as she pulled you up and into her arms. You flooded her with a crawling sensation of withdrawal; every guard she had once possessed seemed to lay down arms and take a seat on lush grass, lose their sense of self and urgency and just be. Just be.
You little wonder.
Alcina clasped her hands about your face gently and kissed you just the same, enjoying the slowness for once, taking time to remember you were still human. Frail. Not unbreakable. And, easy to hurt.
That was the last thing she ever wanted.
There wasn't a bone in your body you weren't sure wasn't turning to rubber and bending to her unspoken will. Alcina was pure command, pure direction, and dictation. She was in control, plain and simple. And what-the-fuck-ever. Were you gunna say no?
"Mmmmm. And what is this 'thing'?" you inquired slumping into her grasp, the lazy smirk on your lips making her arch that perfect eyebrow.
"Oh, well, that... I have to show you."
She winked.
And then you were on the roof of the apartment complex.
You would never get used to how fast she moved.
Ever.
The blur of movement and scenery left the butterflies in the pit of your stomach confused, shrieking, and running into each other. You had to shake your head to recollect.
You'd never been on the roof before but you were positive there was never a lovely little love-seat, tiny end table, and candles up here.
Alcina had left you there as she drifted towards the table and pulled something from the inside of her coat, placing it on the table. Turning to you she offered her long arm once again to you, beckoning you to her as she pulled you in and held you close.
It was darker up here, the light from far below creating a most perfect ambience. On top of the roofs of all of New York was a favorite for Alcina. Alone. Secluded. No one to see or bother. And now she had you all alone in a world closer to her own.
You snuggled into her. Ready to surrender to sleep in an instant. This was a little too cute and perfect.
"Draga mea... you poor, poor thing, I can tell how absolutely exhausted you are," she cooed, stroking your back and kissing the shell of your ear, "come, I brought you an elixir to help with the drastic drain. I thought perhaps we could watch the stars tonight, enjoy each others company in a gentler light."
There wasn't much time for your reply. Alcina had taken you by the hand and sat you on the quaint couch, grabbed the small bottle from the table and sat beside you.
You couldn't be sure what color the liquid was, but it seemed to be a dark blue or green.
A slight chuckle escaped Alcina's crimson lips, she could hear your question before you could even formulate it.
"It is an old elixir from when humans were still kept as pets; when a vampire and their human would get carried away, much as we did last night, the human would drink this to help aid in their healing and recovery," Alcina caressed your cheek lovingly, "I promise draga, it is completely safe, I would never give you anything that would harm you."
That warmed you.
"I know, I trust you."
Somehow your admission stumbled and calmed both of you.
You knew she was a vicious, dangerous, deadly killer. But to you, she was just Alcina. Your vampire. Your unintended, unexpected, unyielding saving grace.
She knew, too.
Popping out the cork, not even bothering to smell it, you downed it in one gulp. The surprise of it not tasting like absolute shit was very welcomed. It was a bit of a floral flavor, maybe a bit earthy, but other than that it was smooth on the way down.
Sitting back into the couch you eyed her intently.
"How many pets have you had in your day?" you asked kindly, yet curiouser than you'd care to admit.
Alcina wasn't sure if she hid the sting on her face as that question pierced her through the chest.
But, she wasn't going to lie to you. She had decided a long while ago that no matter what you asked, she would answer. Secrets did no one a favor in a life like this. At least, not in this situation. Repeating what happened with Madeleine was something she never wanted to do again.
"One," she stated carefully, "and truly, calling her a pet is... crude, at best," she took a shallow breath and released it slowly, but Alcina kept her eyes hooked to yours, "I never liked the term. For many, or possibly all vampires, it fits. Perhaps too well. But for me... I never saw her as such. I didn't consider myself her owner, as if she was chained like an animal to me and my will, that she was property for me to command and do as I pleased. No. She was... a connection. A living, breathing, thinking, feeling, person all her own."
You watched as her eyes trailed away as her memories drug her down a jagged path.
You needed to get her back.
"What was her name?"
Oh, your question was so soft. Alcina smiled gently, the remains of a doleful wince lilting as the name sounded in her head.
"Madeleine."
"That's pretty," you smiled brighter, trying to keep this light, "tell me more about her? I mean, if you want."
Alcina leaned back into the arm of the couch and beckoned you into her, you complied and she settled there with you, her eyes drifting to the very pale pin-pricks of light in the black blanket above. Damn city light pollution.
"Well... what to tell..."
The two of you lay there, Alcina regaling you once again of stories from her past; this time about her love, her human, Madeleine. How she was a beautiful thing; a curly haired red-head barely into her 30's, tall, slender, cheek bones you could cut glass with, and a sad and broken heart of a child she lost far too young. The bonding they shared, the deep connection and learned and respected differences and similarities that complimented the two so perfectly. How hours between them seemed to slip by the same way it did for the two of you, and how she and Madeleine would steal away any moment they could until the sun was clawing it's way to the surface; a demon hell-bent to rip them apart. As always.
The story had fizzled out and you felt Alcina still.
You could sense the coolness of sadness and something else seep into her.
There was more.
"What happened to her?"
There it was.
The question Alcina dreaded you to ask but knew your intelligence, and curiosity, would never let lie.
"She died."
Her reply was quiet. In fact you weren't sure she had actually uttered it.
You carefully repositioned and looked at her, a steady hand on her chest, looking for the unspoken answer to the question you hadn't yet pressed.
"How?"
'Alcina, please.'
Madeleine's plea was shaky, trembling, just as the rest of her frail frame.
Her dress was torn and ragged. Tears had painted trails of smudged grey down her cheeks where her mascara once graced her beautiful long eyelashes. Her teeth were chattering; it was cold in the underground and she was barely clothed.
In the middle of the council hall stood Alcina, Madeleine, hundreds of other vampires, guards, and Mother Miranda; standing tall and ominous at the top step looking down to the two women in the judgement circle.
Alcina couldn't look up. Her eyes were sealed to the floor at her feet.
She too, was clad barely in any clothing. Her side was side was an ugly, open, bloodied mess. Her gown was plastered to her thigh and all down her leg with her blood. Her chest was hastily trying to intake air, half to ease the pain, half to steady her senses that were wild as an injured, cornered lion.
Her body ached.
Her heart was screaming.
Everything around her was spinning and all she could hear was Madeleine's quivering breath, and Mother Miranda.
'Quit being weak, Alcina!'
It rattled her core. All she could taste was copper, a toxic bitterness from whatever was on that dagger. How it coursed through the dead black veins in her body made her sick. Like slugs pulsing, slithering, moving within her with no way to expunge the putrid feeling.
She felt like she was dying all over again, but this time in a much more horrid way.
'ALCINA!'
Her eyes finally snapped up from the floor to find Madeleine now in the grasp of Mother Miranda's guard.
'I will do this if you make me, but if I do, know that it will be more horrific than the blight of your own hand. Her suffering will endure for as long as I see fit and I WILL make you endure every second along with her.'
Alcina quite literally could not move. She could feel the hot, sticky trails of tears cutting down her cheeks and the shattering of her chest.
It was only when Madeleine finally caught her eyes up in hers, that tender plea once more falling from her lips, the slightest nod from her head full of long red curls, could Alcina shakily grasp a semblance of strength.
'Please', she mouthed, 'please.'
Please.
Alcina owed it to Madeleine to do this by her hand, by a loving hand, not one of cruelty and malice. She owed it to her, her lover, her confidant, to end her life by way of love. Regardless of the sick and twisted bane it bore.
'Her blood is the only thing that will end this suffering, yours and hers, Alcina. Do it.'
If Alcina had had the strength she would have slit Mother Miranda's throat, tore her head from her pompous body and everyone else's in this room. But Mother Miranda knew her strength, knew her capabilities, of course she did. Hence the poison drenched on the dagger she so easily plunged into Alcina's side earlier.
Crippling her not only gave her sick pleasure, it was the only upper hand she had. The only leveling of the playing ground.
Stupid fucking bitch.
She hated her.
Hated her.
A last whimper of Madeleine sent Alcina over the edge.
She tore her lover from the arms of the guard and held her close.
Who was shaking and quivering more was as good as anyone's guess. Madeleine's heart beat was rapid and sounded so loudly in Alcina's ears, it hurt. It all hurt so much.
'I'm so sorry!'
Came the pained whisper of pure and utter regret.
'I'm not.'
Replied the gentle reassurance, filled with love and acceptance Alcina would never understand.
A clench of her eyelids, tears forced free, Alcina bit down on Madeleine's throat.
You didn't know what happened just then, but you felt a tidal wave from Alcina you hadn't before. It was cold just as much as it was scorching hot. Her eyes seemed to flash in those brief seconds upon you asking and feared perhaps you should have just left it alone. But the static began to evaporate and you felt Alcina's body release.
"I... killed her."
Oh.
The admission wasn't as candid as it seemed. There was so much more beneath this. You couldn't see it, but you could definitely feel it. And it felt like a thousand and one weights on top of your chest.
Something terrible had taken place. Alcina would not do this by mere chance, by accident, by choice. No, not the way she spoke of her.
"Wh-why?" you asked with a hush.
Please don't, draga mea.
Alcina swallowed.
"I... chose to spare her one death in exchange for another."
You opened your mouth to reply but you couldn't. Something held your words, pressed a hand to your pressing curiosity and settled the unease and need for more answers. Alcina was hurting. You sensed it, felt it. And you didn't need her to tell you everything, you didn't need to make her relive anymore pain just for your own sake. No. This was enough.
In a moments passing you simply gave a slight nod, and nestled back a little, letting her know silently you weren't going to pry any further.
Alcina was stunned when you didn't immediately pull away and run. You didn't push. You just accepted it? She narrowed her eyes at you but felt nothing awry, nothing to tell her you were puling away from her. You were so perplexing.
She placed a hand over yours, "It's a story I cannot bare to tell you all of now," her breath was sharp on the inhale, "please know it was a decision I never wanted to make, one I shouldn't have had to... and I..."
"It was Mother Miranda wasn't it."
Alcina's eyes about went black.
"How could you know that?"
You shook your head and sat up, looking at her with more love and acceptance than you were aware you had in your body, "I don't know, I don't know how or why I knew that I just... when you talk about her, it's like I can just... feel and know things without any real reason and it's actually kind of infuriating at this point. It's happening more and more."
Alcina continued to stare at you.
"I'm - I'm so sorry, I... is that why you tried to break things off with me a while ago?"
Good hell. Did your baffling, blunt, all-knowing questions ever cease?
She huffed.
"Yes. And since you seem to be so privy to things you shouldn't, I suppose I needn't explain any further."
You smirked, eliciting one in exchange.
Grasping her hand firmly you brought it to your lips, kissing her pale knuckles, "I really am sorry. I know it means very little, but, no one should have to make that choice."
It meant everything.
No one had ever apologized to Alcina for anything. Not for harm they caused, not for pain she endured, not for anything in the world. And now you. Apologizing for something you had no hand in.
The size of the enigma that was you was just getting bigger.
Alcina didn't know how to regard you, how to understand you, respond or speak. You had empathy beyond her comprehension.
How she wished to put you together like a puzzle, the big picture of you becoming clearer and clearer with each piece placed.
She was beginning to fall for you. Deeply.
The remainder of the night was spent oddly silent, yet without a scent of awkwardness. Another unspoken exchange of awareness, understanding, and acceptance had the two of you cuddling once again to watch the muted stars inch ever so slowly across the velvet heavens.
You had fallen asleep a few hours before dawn and Alcina was peacefully content to hold you. Admire you. Ponder your vast array of intrigue and weave a dream of what life could have been like with you if things were entirely different. She could and would be able to love you in any lifetime, that she was sure.
Alcina placed a groggy you back into your bed as the sun threatened its entrance. She kissed you with reverence and tucked you in soundly, left you to slumber on as a busy mind kept her company on the way back to the underground.
Still, she felt no indifference from you. Had no fear that you would shy from her even from what she'd told you. There was much clarification needed, she wanted to tell you, but Alcina wasn't sure she could revisit it as of yet.
Time heals all wounds.
Bullshit.
The manor was oddly lit up as she approached.
Upon entry she heard several voices from the living room, and jazz from the antique gramophone player buzzing it's way through the air.
She hung her coat as the bones in her spine became unnaturally stiff.
As Alcina rounded the corner, her heart, had it been alive, would have stopped. Died. Shriveled up and collected into dust in the pit of her stomach.
"Mother Miranda."

My Mechanical Romance by Alexene Farol Follmuth

Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner
When Cassie Klein goes to an off-campus bar to escape her school’s Family Weekend, she isn’t looking for a hookup—it just happens. Buying a drink for a stranger turns into what should be an uncomplicated, amazing one-night stand. But then the next morning rolls around and her friend drags her along to meet her mom—the hot, older woman Cassie slept with. Erin Bennett came to Family Weekend to get closer to her daughter, not have a one-night stand with a college senior. In her defense, she hadn’t known Cassie was a student when they'd met. To make things worse, Erin’s daughter brings Cassie to breakfast the next morning. And despite Erin's better judgement—how could sleeping with your daughter’s friend be anything but bad?—she and Cassie get along in the day just as well as they did last night. What should have been a one-time fling quickly proves impossible to ignore, and soon Cassie and Erin are sneaking around. Worst of all, they start to realize they have something real. But is being honest about the love between them worth the cost?
