🧦☕🧸A Guide to Writing Cozy Fantasy
Check out my masterpost for more tips :)
What is "cozy fantasy"? 🧺🪵
Cozy fantasy is a subgenre that is characterized by a more everyday approach to fantasy.
While its definition is not as clear-cut (everyone will have a sightly different idea of what it needs to look like), there are some general approaches to writing in this subgenre.
Elements of Cozy Fantasy 🕯️ೀ
A comforting, healing ambience 🍪
Rather than bloody battle and cunning witches, we have our next door wizard baker chumming up his special pumpkin pie.
Every magical book at their deepest core evoke a healing quality, but for these cozy novels, this warm element takes control.
2. "Kindness” and ‘gentleness” tropes 🍂
Found family/community, a sense of togetherness
Kind hearted protangoists
Plots gull of joy, hope or happy endings. Give your readers reassurance that everything will work out. And they do.
Ambience woven in the worldbuilding that gets the reader intitamely close to the world
Slower pace, allow the reader to delve into the story world and build stake in these kind, loving characters.
Slice of life: provide personal insight into the character’s “mundane” lives.
The plot must take this "happy" nad kind" element as the MAIN theme. Every book provides catharsis at the end, but if the process if filled with dark, dangerous adventures, that's not cozy at all!
3. Cozy doesn’t mean “no/low stake” 📖
No novel would be interesting without conflict and some kind of loss.
Think of “personal” stakes. Cozy fantasy can be grand adventures, quiet magical quests, fairytales or healing slice of life stories.
For example, the protagonist can develop new relationship around town and figure out her passion to express the theme of importance of enduring.
4. Generally slower pace, focusing more on the inner development of the protagonist and the main side characters.

Hello, all respectfully, may I ask, why do you want emilie to be dead? I mean adrien deserves to have his mom back, don’t you think? You can answer it thru private chat if it makes you more comfortable.
No that’s perfectly fine! I love getting a chance to overanalyse and write down my own thoughts! 📝
So, I have a complicated relationship with Emilie as a character, but I don’t hate her by any means. I do believe she is a lot less pure and innocent than we were first led to believe, but that makes her much more compelling, so as far as I’m concerned it’s a great writing choice.
The reason I think she should be dead, or more accurately, stay dead (the nuance is crucial), is simply storytelling.
As fun as the show is, it is also pretty serious when it wants to be, and these 5 seasons were written with a couple of core messages in mind:
Part of the experience of being human is to accept that there is no magical solution to our problems. Sometimes things don’t work out, sometimes we lose the people we care about; and actions bring consequences, always. This is why using the Peacock carries such a heavy toll, even after it is fixed, and why the Lucky Charm primarily relies on Marinette’s intelligence and creativity (characteristically human qualities) rather than being an automatic problem solver.
Tumblr media
Whenever these losses occur — you have to move on. Staying stuck in the past means depriving yourself of a chance to enjoy the present and plan for the future. All of the events of these 5 seasons were triggered by Gabriel’s inability to accept the concept of death, and by his attempts to drag all of Paris down the pits of grief (symbolised by the akuma attacks) with him — starting with his own son.
Tumblr media
Of course, Adrien deserves to be happy and loved! And Emilie herself explains how it can happen:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By letting her go.
Adrien is an extremely strong and loving kid who, unlike his father, is able to shoulder the pain while still opening himself up to the world. Gabriel trying to bring Emilie back did nothing to fix the sorrow his son had to deal with; in fact, it cost him his other parent and a normal childhood in the process.
But the thing is — Adrien does not need Emilie anymore.
Tumblr media
He has a girlfriend who loves him so much she gave his dad one last chance to make the right choice, despite all the pain he caused (and will likely continue to cause from the grave). He has a cousin who loves him so much he was willing to burn the world down, then help fix it to protect him. He has amazing friends who supported him through this entire ordeal (special shout-out to Nino, who has been on Gabriel’s case since S1 E9), even when he did not feel comfortable enough to share the full extent of the abuse he was going through. He has Amelie and Nathalie, who will provide him with the motherly love he needs in his life, and Tom and Sabine, who are already packing him his breakfast every morning because they’ve carved him a place in their family and hearts. Also, he has a cheese-eating demon who lives in his pocket.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No one is entitled to raising the dead, and Adrien would never even consider it. But he does deserve love and care and happiness, things his father deprived him of in his senseless quest to defy the laws of nature — things he was able to build for himself because he chose to be kind and vulnerable despite his grief.
Season 6 will be terrible on him, but he will come back stronger on the other side. And in doing so, he will send an important message to the core audience of the show: young children who will sooner or later have to mourn a loved one themselves, but will know they can be OK thanks to his example.
And you know, sometimes us adults need a little reminder too. 💚

So the Death of the Outsider lacks a chaos system and it makes perfect sense
(I recommend reading my other post on how chaos works in the DH universe first but it is not mandatory.)
The point of the chaos system is, at its core, a reflection of how a world already at its tipping point reacts to the player's actions: Dunwall ridden by the plague and oppressed by the Lord Regent’s rule, Karnaca bloodfly-bitten and slowly torn to shreds by the Duke with people scared after the recent coup.
Billie, however, simply exists as a person once the world has been tipped towards the better, Emily having reclaimed her throne and Karnaca slowly but surely steering towards better times. Her quest is not motivated by politics or by a falling empire. It is entirely personal to her, Daud, and the Outsider.
Billie is an ex-assassin. She puts the world on a tipping point, but she does not decide whether the world rights itself or comes crashing over the edge. She takes jobs from the black market, sometimes killing people for money, because that is all it is to her - a job. And while she may kill innocent people while at it, there is no more terror it can bring atop the cruel rule of the Duke and people dying in the mines. In the end, she will disappear into the shadows. It is just another mugging, another unfortunate murder of a father coming home in the evening. Nothing more, nothing less. No responsibility to take over it after.
She is dedicated to her quest, and that quest is not even hers - it is Daud's, and she is just going along with it out of maybe guilt, maybe old times' sake. She is not even that interested in killing the Outsider herself, has very little stakes in it, and decides to go through with it because it's what Daud wanted. There is no world that can react to her because she is the world that is reacting, in a sense, to Daud's wishes and the Outsider's subtle interventions.
Compared to, say, DH2 which takes place months before the events of DotO, Billie has very little to lose, no place to reclaim, no world to save. The results of her actions, no matter what they might be, won't change how the world is at the end of the game. Emily can choose whether a brilliant doctor lives so she can save lives, she decides whether the Howlers or the Overseers take over Batista, dictates who rules and with how much power, with what level of cruelty. Billie is killing a god, no matter what it takes, and there is little need for consideration of how this result is achieved.
The game does not even have targets, save for one, the Outsider himself. All the missions are about gathering intel and preparing for the job. The structure of the whole game is very different to serve the purpose of the plot and honestly it's a clever choice so that the focus remains on the one thing only - killing the Outsider.
One thing I did not mention in relation to chaos in my other post is that the chaos also influences the Outsider and his speeches at the shrines. Which, fair enough, it is just one more change in dialogue among many. But in the case of DotO, he is directly involved. He is not an observer anymore. He has real reason to be emotionally invested in what is happening and what Billie is doing. He needs to bait her into murder, or change her mind to spare him and free him from his eternal imprisonment. There can't be a change from interest to cynicism as Billie kills more people to get to him, because in the end, he is the target. He wants out of the Void by any means necessary, which means he has to be fully invested at all times. He has no reason to suddenly go soft and make subtle comments. He comes across as so much more malicious in this game, maiming Billie and being so incredibly cruel when he tells her that Daud has passed while she was away. All this because he can't risk her changing her mind, thinking to herself, “Hey, maybe he sucks but he’s not That Bad” and then turning on her heel to leave. He is trying to influence Billie instead, which he didn’t do with his Marked (unless you count his mentions of multiple possible outcomes as influencing, or him telling Daud about Delilah).
So no, the world won't change for you, the player. It won't change because you chose not to kill anyone, not even the contract targets, because if you don't do the dirty work, someone else will. And the Outsider cannot change either, because Billie is not changing the fate of an empire. She is changing the fate of Him, personally, and he cannot afford to let her choose the only bad choice - indifference. So there is no point in a chaos at all.
No matter what Billie does in the end, the outcome will be the same - the Void will change. sShe will change the universe as they know it, but no matter how she goes about it, the change will come. She is not faced with a question of what she wants the world to be. She was guided there by others, expected to do one thing - kill a god. The world has set her up, and now she has to react.
And so she comes to the Void and is met with the only choice that will matter: Is she going to show mercy, or remain the same?

~ That's a lot. Recommendations? ~
Honestly, I would start with Fantasy High! It's a really good introduction to both the core cast and the way Dimension 20 sets itself apart from other Actual Play shows. From there, you can either go in order (release or series), or simply dabble with whichever genre or campaign trailer catches your eyes most.
As for my personal favorites:
Core Cast would be between A Crown of Candy and A Starstruck Odyssey. A Crown of Candy has some of the most incredible storytelling I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing - Game of Thrones wishes it could be as good! Meanwhile A Starstruck Odyssey is perhaps the funniest games I have ever watched.
Guest Cast is A Court of Fey and Flowers with a very close second being The Seven. I had never understood the appeal of regency before A Court of Fey and Flowers absolutely rocked me with the slightest brush of an ungloved hand. And no media has truly captured what it's like to be in that weird, volatile transition of teenager to young adult quiet like the Seven in the most unhinged way possible.

Emily's words resonate with a depth that transcends the physical realm expressing a longing for a connection that surpasses mere desire the way she articulates the quest for a deeper ...soulful bond amidst the heat of passion is truly compelling Emily's contemplation of yearning for more than just the embrace of bodies ~ seeking a connection that touches the essence of Death's soul is beautifully profound
it's as if she's exploring the intersection between physicality and a deeper emotional resonance a yearning for a love that speaks to the core of who Death is
Emily's exploration of this longing for a universal connection ...amidst the throes of desire is thought-provoking and resonates deeply within Death's...silence

To give some more specific examples of what I was talking about in the last post I made, for my own selfshipping experience:
I haven’t exactly created much story for this selfship yet, but I want to make an HMDS Cute save file on my phone where I play as my self-insert Emily and marry Skye, so.. whatever the in-game timings of the heart events will be is going to be the canon time those events take place in the story!
Similarly, I think I lost all my Skyrim stuff when I rebooted my laptop, but I want to create a playthrough to go through with Serana, and the details of my selfship with her can be taken from that actual playthrough.
In the second timeline of Reborn, Adriana wins her Gym battle against Ciel with only her Silvally and Roserade left standing, and then evolves her Murkrow into Honchkrow to allow her to fly back to Iolia Valley to see Luna. This is because, when I first got to this point in my own playthrough, I wrote down how each turn of the battle went to be able to write about it most accurately!
In the story of my selfship with Perun, her Core Crystal is found by Mòrag in the Leftherian Archipelago because this is where and by whom Perun was first awakened in the first save file I played that had her in it. (I also have a record of finding KOS-MOS in the exact same location twice in a row!)
My Kingdom Hearts self-insert, Aria, was assumed to be 15 when she was found by Livian in Daybreak Town, 16 when she joined the Sapphires after an incident in her previous party, and 18 when Daybreak Town fell. This is because I was 15 when I met my old best friend (whose self-insert was Livian) through KHUX, 16 when we switched parties and joined the in-game Sapphires together, and 18 when the final story quest released and the servers shut down. I always envision my self-inserts to be the same age as me (because they are all me), so in Aria’s case she “catches back up to me” after being in the realm of darkness since time doesn’t pass properly in there and I can use that as my reasoning.
This one is angsty, but: in my save file of Dragon Quest IX where I played as Ardea and Pavo was in my party, Ardea dealt the final blow to the final boss, but our other two party members (Avalon and Iris) had been wiped out. In canon, you eat the final fygg to become mortal and then the bonus one from the postgame to let yourself see Stella again, but in my version of events, Ardea eats the final fygg to free herself from Celestrian laws, then the bonus one is eaten to bring Iris and Avalon back because they died during the final boss fight.
Stuff like this can really be so fun to incorporate ^-^

Directed by Trey Edward Shults, "Waves" (2019) delves into the intricate layers of human emotions, family dynamics, and the profound impacts of tragedy. 📂 ⒼⓔⓣⒾⓣⒽⓔⓡⓔ    ▶▶ https://tinyurl.com/waves2109
📂 ⒼⓔⓣⒾⓣⒽⓔⓡⓔ    ▶▶ https://tinyurl.com/waves2109
Plot Summary:
The film centers around the Williams family, particularly the teenage siblings Tyler (played by Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and Emily (played by Taylor Russell), and their tumultuous journey through life's highs and lows. Tyler, a popular high school wrestler, grapples with the pressure to excel both on and off the mat under the watchful eye of his demanding father, Ronald (played by Sterling K. Brown). Emily, on the other hand, navigates her own challenges while trying to find her identity and purpose amidst the chaos of her family dynamics.
The narrative takes a dramatic turn when an unforeseen tragedy strikes, shattering the family's fragile facade and sending them spiraling into a whirlwind of emotions. As they struggle to come to terms with their grief and guilt, each member of the family embarks on a personal journey of self-discovery and redemption, ultimately finding solace and reconciliation in the power of love and forgiveness.
Visuals and Soundtrack:
One of the most striking aspects of "Waves" is its visually stunning cinematography, which expertly captures the raw intensity of the characters' emotions and the lush beauty of the Florida landscape. From sweeping aerial shots of sun-drenched beaches to intimate close-ups that capture every subtle nuance of the actors' performances, each frame is meticulously crafted to evoke a visceral response from the audience.
Complementing the film's visuals is a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack that weaves seamlessly throughout the narrative, enhancing the emotional resonance of each scene. The eclectic mix of genres, ranging from ambient electronic beats to soul-stirring orchestral arrangements, serves to underscore the film's themes of love, loss, and redemption, leaving a lasting impression long after the credits roll.
Performances:
The ensemble cast of "Waves" delivers powerhouse performances that breathe life into their complex characters and elevate the film to new heights. Kelvin Harrison Jr. delivers a tour-de-force performance as Tyler, perfectly capturing the character's inner turmoil and vulnerability as he grapples with the weight of his own expectations and the expectations of others. Taylor Russell shines as Emily, imbuing her character with a quiet strength and resilience that belies her outward fragility.
Sterling K. Brown delivers a nuanced portrayal of Ronald, the patriarch of the Williams family, whose stoic facade hides a deep well of pain and regret. Renée Elise Goldsberry delivers a standout performance as Catherine, Ronald's wife and the matriarch of the family, whose unwavering love and support provide a beacon of hope in the darkest of times.
Themes and Impact:
At its core, "Waves" is a deeply human story that explores the universal themes of love, loss, and redemption with a rare authenticity and depth. Through its multi-layered narrative and richly drawn characters, the film challenges its audience to confront their own preconceptions and biases, while also offering a message of hope and healing in the face of adversity.
The film's exploration of family dynamics, particularly the relationships between parents and children, is both poignant and thought-provoking, inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences and relationships. By juxtaposing the outwardly perfect facade of the Williams family with the internal struggles and conflicts that lie beneath the surface, "Waves" underscores the importance of empathy, understanding, and forgiveness in navigating the complexities of human relationships.
Final Verdict:
In conclusion, "Waves" is a cinematic tour de force that deserves to be celebrated for its bold storytelling, breathtaking visuals, and powerhouse performances. Trey Edward Shults has crafted a film that transcends genre conventions to deliver a deeply human story that resonates on a profound emotional level. Whether you're a fan of drama, romance, or simply great filmmaking, "Waves" is a must-see experience that will leave you breathless and profoundly moved.

Spoilers for Emily's Quest:
WHY ILSE MIGHT HAVE FOUND TEDDY "BORING":
I always wondered about this paragraph from Emily's Quest: [Ilse about Teddy]: "It's his looks I love really—not him. Sometimes he bores me—really. Although I was so sure he wouldn't. He never did before we were engaged."
Because, really... Girl, you have known him for what, fourteen years? And you are finding him boring NOW?
But I actually think Ilse might have had a valid reason to think this way. Teddy might have become boring after their engagement - and here's why:
I think that Teddy's personality type might be clasified as an INFP. According to Google: "These rare personality types tend to be quiet, open-minded, and imaginative, and they apply a caring and creative approach to everything they do. Although they may seem quiet or unassuming, Mediators (INFPs) have vibrant, passionate inner lives. Creative and imaginative, they happily lose themselves in daydreams, inventing all sorts of stories and conversations in their minds. These personalities are known for their sensitivity – Mediators can have profound emotional responses to music, art, nature, and the people around them."
This type is characterized as having a complex emotional nature. Despite this, INFPs seem to be very reserved and find it difficult to open up and talk about their feelings.
"Idealistic and empathetic, Mediators long for deep, soulful relationships, and they feel called to help others."
(It would actually fit Teddy's character and the reasons for his engagement with Ilse: "I began to cry like a frightened, foolish baby. And Teddy's arms were about me and he was saying I must marry him—and let him take care of me" - Emily's Quest).
"But because this personality type makes up such a small portion of the population, Mediators may sometimes feel lonely or invisible, adrift in a world that doesn’t seem to appreciate the traits that make them unique."
It is very interesting how the INFPs view relationships:
"Mediators (INFPs) are dreamers and idealists, especially when it comes to romance. People with this personality type believe in the power and beauty of true love, and they sincerely hope never to settle for anything less."
"Mediators don’t just want to find a partner – they want to connect with a soul mate."
Teddy loved Ilse as a friend, but they were not kindred spirits. Firstly, he was already in love with someone else - someone he could not forget, despite his best efforts ("There seemed nothing to do but forget you—if I could. I never succeeded, but I thought I did—except when I looked at Vega of the Lyre." Emily's Quest)
Secondly, Ilse and Teddy were two completely different people with different core values. Ilse adored her job, but she was not devoted to it they way Teddy was ("I love my work but it doesn't possess me as yours possesses you. I'd give it up in a twinkling for—well, we're all as we're made." - Emily's Quest). For Teddy, his art was a vocation. He wouldn't feel whole without it. For Ilse, it was more like a hobby - something she enjoyed tremendously, but wouldn't miss if it was gone (at least that's what she said in EQ).
The other thing - Ilse and Teddy's constant arguments: "We're always quarrelling—you know me of old. We always will. We'll spoil every wonderful moment with a quarrel. But life won't be dull." (Emily's Quest).
I never got an impression that Teddy enjoyed quarelling. He always seemed more of a peace-maker. And if he truly was an INFP, constant arguments would cause him a lot of discomfort:
"Mediators tend to promote harmony over disagreement. Although this lends stability to their relationships, it can also lead to problems. To avoid triggering a conflict, Mediators may avoid talking openly about things that are bothering them – instead, they might mentally fixate on the problem or try to solve it on their own."
If we sum it all; loss of his romantic dreams, the lack of understanding coming from someone he intended to marry, open conflict, constant quarelling and a prospect of spending the rest of his life with someone who had different core values than him might make Teddy even more withdrawn and reserved - which Ilse, who was vibrant and impulsive, could have easily interpreted as boring.
I have a feeling that it is only Ilse's voice that is heard here - never Teddy's. But he seems visibly unhappy about his engagement ("there is only one star I hate. Vega of the Lyre,"), just as Ilse is.
But, on the bright side, if Teddy's personality type really is INFP, he would be an ideal partner for an artistic Emily:
"That said, these personalities also want to help their partners learn, grow, and pursue their goals. Provided they do so, Mediators’ support and devotion can make all the difference in their partners’ lives."
"When they fall in love, Mediators reveal just how much passion thrums beneath their quiet exteriors. Devoted and loyal, they nevertheless respect their partner’s independence, aiming to accept their partners as they are."

Divinity Has Changed The Way We Look At Movies
Tumblr media
One of the newer and weirder movies to come from Utopia Movies is called Divinity. The film is polarizing with it's black and white cinematography and it's heavy use of tantilizing imagery. Many will not like this one. It doesn't seem like it's made for many people to like it. This film fits into a tight niche group of films.
The film at it's core is about a man's quest for immortality. Two men abduct this character a meet a seductive woman on their journey. The film is very one sided. It's pretentious, and grotesque, and hard to love.
With that said, there are things to enjoy about this film. It's shot beautifully. Eddie Alcazar did a fantastic job with the direction here.
Bella Thorne was used well and sparingly. Emily Willis was decent in her minimized role here, doing what she does best. It's not a surprise Soderbergh was attached to this project.
Overall, this film is polarizing. It will divide audiences completely. It will challenge you to find something you like aout it but once you look passed the daunting stylization choices you might fall in love with the imagery and the score. It's all around a decent film and we're glad Utopia is still out there giving original filmmakers chances to tell their stories.

Favorite Books 2023
I had a really good reading year in 2023, and was lucky enough to find some new favorites. I thought I’d share some recommendations here, and would love to hear some of yours! (If you are reading this, I mean you, specifically💛 )
The Postscript Murders (Elly Griffiths): This is the sequel to The Stranger Diaries, which was also one of my favorite books the year I first read it. Harbinder Kaur is a detective I could follow endlessly, the kind I seek to read mysteries about. She’s nuanced and clever and messy and deeply compassionate (even against her better judgement). Honestly, the character work throughout this book is excellent; the characters have such richly drawn personalities that feel fully developed, and the mystery is clever and well paced.
Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup (John Carreyrou): I watched the documentary on HBO (The Inventor - also fantastic) about Elizabeth Holmes and fell down a bit of a rabbit hole. It’s a bit terrifying to see how far someone could get on lies and connections to powerful people, but Carreyrou is also quick to point out all the people striving to do the right thing against all odds. There’s some fascinating discussions of science and technology, but the core always comes back to the people involved. This account manages to make this true story that feels larger than fiction grounded in individuals and their decisions; it’s well-researched, deliberately written, and absolutely engrossing.
The Sea of Tranquility (Emily St. John Mandel): Mandel’s writing constantly inspires me; there is a deep precision to her descriptions that manages to still feel like it’s gliding, and a moving amount of compassion for the characters who inhabit the story, however flawed they may be. This book combines different timelines, moving from perspective to perspective in a way that only truly makes sense when it all comes together (and it comes together with a gut punch).
What Moves the Dead (T. Kingfisher): A retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher with sinister fungi, I don’t think it’d be possible to make a better book for me on purpose. The writing is twisted, but lyrical, and the take on the story brings a powerful source of dread. Inter-spliced with this is a surprising and fascinating discussion of how culture and language shape ideas of gender. This is a contender for my favorite horror book of all time, and would highly recommend in particular to fans of Mexican Gothic.
Plain Bad Heroines (Emily M. Danforth): This is a gothic boarding school ghost story turned Hollywood satire that is, at its heart, a sapphic love story. With an omniscient narrator (a lá Lemony Snicket, dear readers) this book tells the complicated history of an all girls’ school, and the women, past and present connected to it. It’s dark and grotesque and moving and funny and I could not put it down once I started.
The House of Rust (Khadija Abdalla Bajabar): This is a magical realism coming-of-age story incorporating elements of diasporic Hadrami culture, following a girl’s quest to recover her father from the sea, who accidentally discovers herself along the way. The prose is gorgeous and even, making reading it feel like listening to a particularly well-told bedtime story. Aisha herself is a complicated and delightful character to follow, she’s allowed the messiness of adolescence and the way her journey ends is both surprising and necessary.  We also get the perspectives of crows with their own social hierarchy and politics, and a talking cat for whom I’d lay down my life.
This World Does Not Belong to Us (Natalia García Friere, translated by Victor Meadowcroft): This is the kind of book you can’t annotate, because every single line would be highlighted. There is a delightful menage to the prose, to the garden which has a mind of its own, and to the slow and deliberate way the story begins to come together. This is a story about a lot of things, but primarily the dynamic between a father whose allowance of cruelty has made him cruel, and a son who cannot make allowances any more. It is poignant, and somehow both very simple and very deep.
Never The Wind (Francesco Dimitri): This is a gothic coming of age story set in southern Italy, and following a recently blind thirteen year old, who begins to suspect a creature is stalking the farmhouse his parents are renovating into a hotel. There are a lot of things to love about this book – the prose, the characters, the discussion of a layered family history where digging leaves you with more questions than answers – but the friendship that blossoms between the two leads is a highlight. There is something incredibly moving about the first person to fight for you against the world.
The Watcher in the Shadows (Carlos Ruiz Zafón): Zafón is perhaps my favorite writer of all time, and the fact that I’ve almost read through his entire backlog would be saddening if it didn’t mean I also got to read stories like this one. The Watcher in the Shadows is one of his young adult novels, following a girl who moves with her family to the coast of Normandy, where a reclusive toymaker builds a labyrinth of mechanical puppets in his mansion on the hill. It’s as twisted and terrifying as that premise would lead one to suspect, but also beautiful and lush and contemplative and quiet.

actually no that last reblog has set off a ramble so let's go down the list
How human are my self-inserts?
(..The actual list is under the readmore, but for most of them the answer is "not fully", ahaha)
Adriana Laverre (Pokémon) - human, but the fact she's originally from the previous timeline and got brought forwards by Anna after dying there probably makes her come across as a bit.. not right. But hey, at least she got cute reverse freckles and fancy Giratina wings from the process. Aria Fiore (Kingdom Hearts, etc.) - not human, because she's a Heartless (so, technically she used to be a human, but isn't anymore). This also applies to her TWEWY version, where she's one of the Shinjuku Reapers (though, again, she was originally a normal exchange student before dying in Shinjuku). Sapphire "Paronet" (Xenoblade Chronicles) - technically human (Gormotti, specifically), but.. also technically a Blade Eater, courtesy of the shards of Avalon's Core Crystal she fell on. Alectra (Genshin Impact) - not human, because she's.. essentially a dead nightingale that got brought back to life through a mixture of emotional and elemental power. So she's an elemental more than anything else. "Lamia" (Genshin Impact) - not human, because she's really a Pyro Abyss Mage! Her current form is a disguise she maintains using magic, similarly to how Enjou does it. Lorenza/"Colombina" (Final Fantasy) - not human, because she's a voidsent! Technically, she's a hybrid of voidsent and the-Thirteenth's-equivalent-to-Miqo'te, like how Zero is a hybrid of voidsent and whatever-the-Thirteenth-calls-Hyur. Calanthe Marsanes (Xenosaga, Xenoblade Chronicles) - human! In Alrest, her accent would imply she's Tantalese, even though she doesn't have the red hair that is commonly seen in people from Tantal. Aline Erica (Xenoblade Chronicles) - human (well, Gormotti, specifically)! Citri Cerinthe (Xenoblade Chronicles) - initially human (or, Homs, strictly speaking, which are not the same as humans because they need ether but basically they're human), but later half-Machina due to being made a Face pilot! Nova Chromalum (Pokémon) - human chosen by a legendary Pokémon (Reshiram, specifically) Catarina di Erinacea (Fire Emblem) - human with a Crest (specifically the lost Crest of the Thorn Dragon) Ardea Volucris (Dragon Quest) - not human, because she's a Celestrian! This is true even after she loses her wings and halo from falling off of the Observatory. Camille Solane (The Elder Scrolls) - initially human (Breton, specifically), but is later turned into a vampire by Serana Lady Telanthera Amaranth (Four Leaf Cloverse) - human! Emily Azalea (Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons) - human (though her boyfriend almost definitely isn't) Seralune (UTAU, etc.) - not human, because she's an UTAUloid, specifically one designed to be like a lunar goddess.
Linaria Volucris/"Ves Fiore" (Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts) - not human, because she's a Celestrian (and that persists even after she loses her halo) "Xiara"/NIL-XIARA (Kingdom Hearts) - not human, because she's a (data-)Nobody MT001524: Echo (Parties Are For Losers) - technically not human, because she's a mutant, but those are more like "humans with powers" Alise Tayle (Four Leaf Cloverse) - not human, because she's fae Carmine the Clever (The Elder Scrolls) - technically not human because she's a Khajiit? Mimi Aster (Kirby, Super Mario) - not human! She doesn't actually know what she is, but she definitely looks human by default despite having the ability to shapeshift. However, she is in fact a magic ancient, which will probably only mean something if you're very into Kirby Cat Teuthis (Splatoon) - not human, because she's an Inkling
Jet Chromalum (Pokémon) - human, even if some suspect she has to be otherwise given that her partner Pokémon is a massive golden Luxray Amber Rylin (The Elder Scrolls) - technically human (Nord, specifically), but is also Dragonborn, so.. "human with the soul of a dragon"? Chiara Verdrose (Four Leaf Cloverse) - technically human as I think of her, but it depends on whether or not witches count as humans in Cloverse, since she is a witch! Elisa Merlot (Scienceverse) - human! Very normal human despite the lab she works in

The followers of Count Dracula eagerly await his return home only to find their dark lord has been ambushed. The players are tasked with desperately trying to get his coffin back to the safety of the Castle.
As for my personal favorites, that would be between A Crown of Candy and A Starstruck Odyssey. A Crown of Candy has some of the most incredible storytelling I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing - Game of Thrones wishes it could be as good! Meanwhile A Starstruck Odyssey is perhaps the funniest games I have ever watched.
