Just got outta the Marvels. Fun movie. Not a good movie, but I definitely enjoyed myself. Anyways, here’s a few tarot archetypes I noticed while watching. Spoilers, of course!
Tumblr media
Carol is the Star
Hope, Inspiration, Guidance
Visually, Carol is just that blond lady lol. The Eight Pointed Star worn on her chest. Narratively, Carol inspires little girls Monica and Kamala. As the Star, she strives to heal a broken society.
Tumblr media
Monica is Death
Endings, Change, Tranistions
Visually, Monica’s outfit is vaguely serving skeleton, but when powered she takes on a ghostly appearance. Spectrum/Spector. Her Emblem even resembles a White Flower. Narratively Monica is still haunted by the Death of her Mother, and even Sacrificers herself in the end, with no assurance of surviving.
When Dar-Benn looks at Carol and says “Death follows you”, Monica is immediately in focus behind her. A lot of layers to that moment.
Tumblr media
Kamala is the Page/Princess of Wands
An Enthusiast, Creative, Free-Spirited Youth
It really hit me when she started using her scarf as a weapon. Then I remembered the orange cat too. Especially her scene herding them haha. And admittedly this may be a stretch, but Bengal/Bangle
Tumblr media
Dar-Benn is Justice/Adjustment
Fairness, Cause & Effect, Balance
Visually, her costumes serve the appropriate look of the card, especially the green Thoth version. The vertical pattens and shoulder accents fit well. Narratively, Dar-Benn wanted to restore order or whatever- she’s not a particularly compelling villain tbh. But her motivations and actions align really well with the card. She wants Justice, even if it’s flawed.

Day 11
Tumblr media
Liber Libræ
0. Learn first — Oh thou who aspirest unto our ancient Order! — that Equilibrium is the basis of the Work. If thou thyself hast not a sure foundation, whereon wilt thou stand to direct the forces of Nature?
1. Know then, that as man is born into this world amidst the Darkness of Matter, and the strife of contending forces; so must his first endeavour be to seek the Light through their reconciliation.
2. Thou then, who hast trials and troubles, rejoice because of them, for in them is Strength, and by their means is a pathway opened unto that Light.
3. How should it be otherwise, O man, whose life is but a day in Eternity, a drop in the Ocean of time; how, were thy trials not many, couldst thou purge thy soul from the dross of earth?
Is it but now that the Higher Life is beset with dangers and difficulties; hath it not ever been so with the Sages and Hierophants of the past? They have been persecuted and reviled, they have been tormented of men; yet through this also has their Glory increased.
4. Rejoice therefore, O Initiate, for the greater thy trial the greater thy Triumph. When men shall revile thee, and speak against thee falsely, hath not the Master said, “Blessed art thou!”?
5. Yet, oh aspirant, let thy victories bring thee not Vanity, for with increase of Knowledge should come increase of Wisdom. He who knoweth little, thinketh he knoweth much; but he who knoweth much hath learned his own ignorance. Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? There is more hope of a fool, than of him.
6. Be not hasty to condemn others; how knowest thou that in their place, thou couldest have resisted the temptation? And even were it so, why shouldst thou despise one who is weaker than thyself?
7. Thou therefore who desirest Magical Gifts, be sure that thy soul is firm and steadfast; for it is by flattering thy weaknesses that the Weak Ones will gain power over thee. Humble thyself before thy Self, yet fear neither man nor spirit. Fear is failure, and the forerunner of failure: and courage is the beginning of virtue.
8. Therefore fear not the Spirits, but be firm and courteous with them; for thou hast no right to despise or revile them; and this too may lead thee astray. Command and banish them, curse them by the Great Names if need be; but neither mock nor revile them, for so assuredly wilt thou be lead into error.
9. A man is what he maketh himself within the limits fixed by his inherited destiny; he is a part of mankind; his actions affect not only what he calleth himself, but also the whole universe.
10. Worship and neglect not, the physical body which is thy temporary connection with the outer and material world. Therefore let thy mental Equilibrium be above disturbance by material events; strengthen and control the animal passions, discipline the emotions and the reason, nourish the Higher Aspirations.
11. Do good unto others for its own sake, not for reward, not for gratitude from them, not for sympathy. If thou art generous, thou wilt not long for thine ears to be tickled by expressions of gratitude.
12. Remember that unbalanced force is evil; that unbalanced severity is but cruelty and oppression; but that also unbalanced mercy is but weakness which would allow and abet Evil. Act passionately; think rationally; be Thyself.
13. True ritual is as much action as word; it is Will.
14. Remember that this earth is but an atom in the universe, and that thou thyself art but an atom thereon, and that even couldst thou become the God of this earth whereon thou crawlest and grovellest, that thou wouldest, even then, be but an atom, and one amongst many.
15. Nevertheless have the greatest self-respect, and to that end sin not against thyself. The sin which is unpardonable is knowingly and wilfully to reject truth, to fear knowledge lest that knowledge pander not to thy prejudices.
16. To obtain Magical Power, learn to control thought; admit only those ideas that are in harmony with the end desired, and not every stray and contradictory Idea that presents itself.
17. Fixed thought is a means to an end. Therefore pay attention to the power of silent thought and meditation. The material act is but the outward expression of thy thought, and therefore hath it been said that “the thought of foolishness is sin.” Thought is the commencement of action, and if a chance thought can produce much effect, what cannot fixed thought do?
18. Therefore, as hath already been said, Establish thyself firmly in the equilibrium of forces, in the centre of the Cross of the Elements, that Cross from whose centre the Creative Word issued in the birth of the Dawning Universe.
19. Be thou therefore prompt and active as the Sylphs, but avoid frivolity and caprice; be energetic and strong like the Salamanders, but avoid irritability and ferocity; be flexible and attentive to images like the Undines, but avoid idleness and changeability; be laborious and patient like the Gnomes, but avoid grossness and avarice.
20. So shalt thou gradually develop the powers of thy soul, and fit thyself to command the Spirits of the elements. For wert thou to summon the Gnomes to pander to thine avarice, thou wouldst no longer command them, but they would command thee. Wouldst thou abuse the pure beings of the woods and mountains to fill thy coffers and satisfy thy hunger of Gold? Wouldst thou debase the Spirits of Living Fire to serve thy wrath and hatred? Wouldst thou violate the purity of the Souls of the Waters to pander to thy lust of debauchery? Wouldst thou force the Spirits of the Evening Breeze to minister to thy folly and caprice? Know that with such desires thou canst but attract the Weak, not the Strong, and in that case the Weak will have power over thee.
21. In the true religion there is no sect, therefore take heed that thou blaspheme not the name by which another knoweth his God; for if thou do this thing in Jupiter thou wilt blaspheme יהוה and in Osiris יהשוה. Ask and ye shall have! Seek, and ye shall find! Knock, and it shall be opened unto you!

Anon #1 wrote: I wanted to thank you first for your amazing blog. Whenever someone engages me about mbti or cognitive functions, your blog is what I swear by and reference, and I encourage them to read in case they’re interested in having a more thorough and wholesome understand of type theory. I wanted to ask you a couple of questions about severely underdeveloped dominant Fe due to childhood trauma. How does it present itself? And have you noticed any correlation between that and BPD? I know that trauma in early childhood us one of the factors in BPD, and at the same time, is a factor that hinders dominant function growth and ego development—leading into unhealthy reliance on defense mechanisms. I know that mental health issues and type theory are not necessarily connected, but it was a hypothesis that I came up with and I’d like to know your opinions on. Thanks again for all your time and effort.
Anon #2 wrote: Hello mbti-notes! I have a question regarding typing LGBT people living in isolated, homophobic or transphobic places or in the past (old times, old movies or books, etc). Perhaps it could help me in the path of typing myself too. Would living in such situation have an impact on the character's type or functions, or how it would be perceived? In other words, would a sensor type vs an intuitive type, a feeler types vs a thinker type, a Ne-Si type vs a Ni-Se type, or a Ti-Fe vs Te-Fi type act, feel or cope differently if stuck in those situations? Which functions would be more impacted or impactful? Would there be a (type or function-specific) behavioral pattern? And would it make the person be perceived as a different type? For example, would it make a T (thinker) look more introverted, or more F (Feeler)? Is it the person's type that determines how that person would react/feel/cope in such situation, or it's the situation that makes the person look like a specific type or go through an odd or unhealthy function development? Thanks a lot.
--------------------
I generally don't like to speculate about connections between type and mental disorders due to the overall lack of research in this area (it is not a popular topic of study). When I respond to questions related to the field of psychology, I try to ensure that the claims I make are predicated on some credible research, and I'm not aware of any studies that link Jungian type to BPD or LGBTQ+ matters.
If you're going to talk about whether someone is "healthy" or "unhealthy" psychologically, it's good to know the word "adjusted" and how that looks.
A well-adjusted person is someone who possesses the necessary traits, skills, and resources to adapt confidently and competently to the circumstances of their life. People who are generally well-adjusted in life tend to feel more happy and fulfilled. These people all look somewhat similar regardless of type because there's actually only a few pathways to happiness and fulfillment.
A poorly adjusted person is someone who lacks the necessary traits, skills, and resources to adapt well to the circumstances of their life. People who are not well-adjusted tend to be more dysfunctional and, thus, more likely to feel unhappy and unfulfilled. These people present much more diverse characteristics and traits because there are innumerable paths to becoming a poorly adjusted person.
Adjustment is a spectrum because maladaptive cognitive-behavioral patterns can take many forms and degrees of severity. Because there are so many interrelated factors that can influence a person's ability to adjust (trauma being only one of many), there is no reliable way to predict how the effects of trauma will present behaviorally. You'd have to consider factors like:
the age at which trauma occurred
the kind of trauma and damage
the severity of trauma and consequences
whether the trauma was one time or continuous
subjective experience of the pain
subjective interpretation of its meaning
available traits, skills, and resources for coping
learned attachment style from primary caregivers
every experience of relationship failure in life
how symptoms of dysfunction changed over time
In other words, every person is an individual, and each finds their own way of dealing with their unique set of life challenges. For example, how might Fe doms deal with early childhood trauma or continuous discrimination? Some Fe doms might become very needy or clingy. Some might become very fearful or guarded. Some might become attention seekers. Some might become paranoid or delusional. Some might live secret double lives...
Humans are highly creative creatures, so the list of possibilities for how to cope with pain and suffering is quite, quite long. The reason there is no one-size-fits-all mental health therapy is that human psychology is very complex.
Anon #2, if you are wanting to do type assessment, your approach is flawed because it's backwards. You are treating type as some kind of computer program that reliably produces the same behavioral results in every person of the same type. Doing this basically erases the complexity of how individuals respond to adversity in reality. Your approach also belies an overemphasis on using superficial behaviors to identify type, which is very prone to error. The method of assessment you want to use isn't the method I use, so I can't answer your question. If you want my help with assessment, follow the instructions on the contact page.
IMO, type isn't meant to be used to predict exactly what a person will do, rather, it ought to be used to achieve a deeper understanding of how a person interpreted the meaning of their experiences. Many laypeople are drawn to typology because they want a simplified way to know people. My approach is the opposite: I use type to reveal people's deeper complexity.
The most I'm willing to say is that trauma is one major factor that has great potential to interfere with psychological development. Since there are many ways in which psychological development can be affected, there are many possible ways the effects of trauma can present in any given individual. If you want to understand the symptoms of BPD better or the negative effects of experiencing prejudice/discrimination, I suggest that attachment style is a more useful concept than type.
You want me to make generalizations but, personally, I hate making generalizations about people. I understand that there are reasons to want generalizations, e.g., to feel less alone in knowing that others have had similar struggles. However, intellectually, I don't find generalizations very useful, and worse, they often lead people to draw biased/flawed conclusions (e.g. stereotyping). Thus, when I'm asked to generalize about people, I usually end up responding with something along the lines of "don't do that".

From One to Two: A harder transition?
Oh parenthood. We all know the life altering, world bending, don't really know 'til you're in it change that having a baby brings. From being able to leave the house whenever you desire, make spur of the moment plans and having FREEDOM to.... no sleep, sore boobs and poop. So much poop.
But no one really talks about the change from going from one kid to two. You think, psh been there, done that. We got this. WRONG! At least for me.
Sure, I'm a pro at the baby thing. No more anxious - am I doing this right? No more (okay, less) googling of every symptom, sleep schedule or change your life baby gadget. Everything that was so hard the first time around is easy..er.
NOW, it's the TODDLER. It's the guilt of not being able to give my whole self to that tiny human that made me a parent in the first place. The grief of having to step back from her and the routines we've built together so that I can care for the new baby. The letting go of control and letting Daddy take over. Feeling awful that I can't be there for her right now the way I always have been.
It's also being overwhelmed when all she wants is to hold the baby. Having way less patience and navigating tantrums. Having a baby glued to my nipples while chasing around an independent and stubborn two and a half year old.
We're six days into this transition and while I know it gets easier, it's not easier now. The "baby blues" hit a couple days ago and now my evenings include crying for no reason, drowning in guilt and more crying.
So, is going from one to two harder? Not necessarily. But it is hard in ways I wasn't expecting. Let the adjustment period commence.

Queen of Swords – Thoth and the Art of Balance
There was a period of time that I stayed away from Tarot. I had gotten tired of it; I guess when you’re young, that happens with anything. I got tired of looking up meanings in a little white book and trying to decipher what the cards meant, what message they could possibly have for me. I grew tired of trying to see myself in arcane images and other people’s words. Still though, the cards would…
