most people see udyati as someone who's quick to forgive - maybe too quick - and while that is true to a certain extent, there are some people exempt from this rule. forgive and forget? no, resent and remember. she is a taurus, after all, and she'll hold a grudge until she dies except, oh, right, she can't. chances are, udyati will hold a grudge until you die, instead.

✺ (1/22) ✺ @jegulus-microfic prompt: cry — 1130 words (jegulus dads ft. harry; getting in trouble at school - but he’s got a real good reason, your honor)
Regulus hangs up his phone with a huff, pushing up from his desk chair to head up the hall to the living room. “James?”
“Yes, my love?” James calls back. He turns from folding laundry into piles on the sofa and frowns when he clocks the tension in Regulus’ face. “What could I have possibly done?”
“It’s not you, it’s your son,” Regulus mutters.
“My son?” James’ brows shoot upward.
“He’s your son when he gets into trouble.”
“I resent that.”
“Resemble it, more like.” Regulus rolls his eyes. “I just got off the phone with Pandora. She got a call from Harry’s school about him being in principal McGonagall’s office because of an altercation with another student.”
James blinks. “They’re five, what does that even look like?”
“Well, we’ll be finding out shortly, because we have to go pick him up. Lily’s got their car and she’s at work.” Regulus shakes his head as he goes to retrieve his coat from the peg inside the front door.
“Hey, hang on.” James grabs him gently by the elbow to get him to look at him. “I’m sure it’s not a big deal.”
“He’s in the principal’s office at five years old, James.”
“That happened a time or a few when I was—” James cuts himself off when one dark eyebrow is arched at him pointedly. “Right, not helping my case. Look, it’s Harry. It’s probably just a big misunderstanding.”
James lifts both hands to grab Regulus by the jaw, towing him in to kiss his forehead a couple quick times. The corner of Regulus’ mouth ticks upward despite himself.
As it turns out, it’s not a misunderstanding.
Instead of looking guilty, Harry looks instantly defiant, arms crossed tight over his chest and chin tilted upward, when Regulus and James join him in the principal’s office.
“Have a seat.” Minerva McGonagall motions across her desk to the open chairs on either side of their son. “Harry, would you care to explain to your fathers why we’re here?”
Harry’s brow furrows as he lets out a huff. “I tackled someone in the sandbox.”
Regulus tilts his head. “Pardon?”
James cuts him a vaguely admonishing look before his focus returns to the child between them, expression softening. “What happened, mate?”
“He made Luna cry, daddy!” Harry whines. “He kept on pulling her hair and calling her Loony.”
Regulus whips toward McGonagall, glaring icily. “And where’s that boy?”
“He’s also been spoken to and picked up by his parents, mister Potter,” She tells him.
“That’s not all, either!” Harry interjects with a dramatic flail of his arms. “I went and told him he was being mean and to say sorry, but he said he was sorry to me ‘cause I have a weird family.”
“Alright, that’s not—” James’ mounting irritation gets cut off when McGonagall lifts a hand to halt him.
“Then he said his mum and dad are talking all the time about how papa’s gonna leave us all someday, and I got really mad so I tackled him and hit him.”
Oh.
Oh, that’s…
Regulus stares at Harry for a long moment, an unexpected pang in his chest. He didn’t know what to expect coming down to the school, hearing Harry’s story of what had occurred. He certainly had not assumed it had anything to do with him.
Harry is so like James, standing up for those he loves with everything he’s got. Even if it gets him into trouble.
Opening and closing his mouth twice, Regulus catches James’ eye. A small smile curls at his husband’s mouth, an odd cocktail of pride and sadness mixed in his hazel eyes. Regulus suddenly knows the feeling, complex as it is.
“I understand you were upset and looking out for your family, but you know you’re not supposed to hit people, mate,” James tells Harry.
“I know…” Harry mumbles, ducking his chin.
“If someone’s being mean, you tell a teacher, alright?”
“Yes, daddy…”
Regulus, lip pinched between his teeth, looks across the desk to find McGonagall’s eyes already on him. A strangely sympathetic look is offered to him from the older woman, but he ignores the twist it causes in his stomach.
Asks instead, “Is Luna alright?”
“I’ve spoken with her, as well, yes. Despite the issue, she said she’d like to finish her day as she usually does,” She confirms.
“Right, well, we’ll get this one home, then.” James claps his hands on his knees then pushes to stand. “So sorry, principal McGonagall.”
“Yeah, me too, sorry, principal McGonagall,” Harry mutters.
Harry shuffles off his chair to follow James on the way out of the office, Regulus grabbing his Spiderman backpack for him. He’s last to the door, which means the ‘mister Potter’ that’s called after them can only be for him. He turns with dark brows lifted, tries not to look too confused when McGonagall’s mouth twitches upward just barely.
“That’s quite the little boy you’ve got standing up for you, there,” She says.
Regulus glances back the other direction at where James and Harry are walking to the school’s main door hand in hand. His own small smile appears, throat tightening before he quietly clears it.
“Yeah, he’s really something,” He murmurs, turning back to the woman. “We’ll work on the hitting bit.”
“That’s good, yes,” She snorts, waving him off.
Regulus catches up to his family, falling into step on Harry’s other side. He makes it a point to ensure that he’s the one who helps Harry into the back of the car when they reach it. Keeps an eye on him pulling his seatbelt across himself on his booster while James settles in the driver’s seat, watching them in the rear view mirror.
Mind still reeling a bit with the turn of events, he can’t help but feel like he’s meant to say something.
“Harry, my darling, you—” Regulus twists his lips to the side as he runs a hand over Harry’s messy hair affectionately. “You know that I’m not really going anywhere, don’t you?”
“Of course, papa.” Harry nods surely. “I know you love us all too much.”
Regulus smiles faintly, nodding in return. “That’s my boy.”
He leans in to leave a kiss against the side of Harry’s head, double checks his seatbelt is secured appropriately, then closes the car door. When he drops into the passenger seat, he finds James looking over at him adoringly, a bright smile on his face. Wordlessly, he leans over the center console to press a lingering kiss to Regulus’ lips.
“Does this mean I can still have dessert after dinner tonight?” Harry asks from the back.
There’s a shared laugh between Regulus and James, two wide smiles pressed together now, before they finally separate to get on their way home.

Kelly Link's "Book of Love"
Tumblr media
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/13/the-kissing-song/#wrack-and-roll
Tumblr media
Kelly Link is one of science fiction's most important writers, a master of the short story to rank with the likes of Ted Chiang. For a decade, Kelly's friends have traded whispers that she was working on a novel – a giant novel – and the rumors were true and the novel is glorious and you will love it:
https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/book-of-love-9781804548455/
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/239722/the-book-of-love-by-kelly-link/
It's called The Book of Love and it's massive – 650 pages! It is glorious. It is tricky.
If you've read Link's short stories (which honestly, you must read), you know her signature move: a bone-dry witty delivery, used to spin tales of deceptive whimsy and quirkiness, disarming you with daffiness while she sets the hook and yanks. That's the unmistakeable, inimitable texture of a Kelly Link story: deft literary brushstrokes, painting a picture so charming and silly that you don't even notice when she cuts you without mercy.
Turns out that she can quite handily do this for hundreds of pages, and the effect only gets better when it's given space to unfold.
Hard to tell you about this one without spoilers! But I'll tell you this much. It's a story about three teenaged friends who return from death and find themselves in the music room at their high school, face to face with their mild-mannered music teacher, Mr Anabin. Anabin explains what's happened in frustratingly cryptic – and very emphatic – terms, but is interrupted when a sinister shape-shifting wolf enters the music room.
This is Bogomil, and whenever he speaks, Mr Anabin turns his back – and vice versa. Anabin and Bogomil appear to be rivals, and Bogomil may or may not have been the keeper of the land of the dead from which the three have escaped. There's also a forth, a tattered shade who's been dead so long they don't remember who they are or anything about themselves. Bogomil would like to take the four back to the deadlands, but Anabin proposes a contest and Bogomil agrees – but no one explains the contest or its rules (or even its stakes) to the four dead teenagers.
That's the wind up. The pitch that follows is flawless, a long and twisting mystery about friendship, love, queerness, rock-and-roll, stardom, parenthood, loyalty, lust and duty. There's a terrifying elder god of Lovecraftian proportions. There are ghosts upon ghosts. There are ancient grudges. There are sudden revelations that come from unexpected angles but are, in retrospect, perfectly set up.
More than anything, there are characters. It's impossible not to love Link's characters, despite (because of) their self-destructive choices and their impossible dilemmas. They are so sweet, but they are also by turns mean and spiteful and resentful, like the pinch of salt that transforms a caramel from inedible spun sugar into something that bites even as it delights.
These characters, so very likable, are often dead or at death's door, and that peril propels the story like an unstoppable locomotive. From the very start, it's clear that some of them can't survive to the end, and Link is merciless in making you root for all of them, even though this means rooting against them all. This, in turn, creates moments of toe-curling, sublime horror.
Link has built a complex machine with more moving parts than anyone has any business being able to keep track of. And yet, each of these parts meshes flawlessly with all the others. The book ends with such triumphant perfection that it lingers long after you put it down. I can't wait to read this one again.

Omegaverse BTS
I was loving people's reactions to the final chapter but wanted to talk a couple of things the name of Steve and Eddie's kid and Tommy Hagan. Because in this 'verse he's so fascinating. Thanks for the comment @eyehartart!
I went back and forth on this so many times you have no idea. At first Dustin (as in Henderson) was their son because the only ones mentioned of the Party are Max and Lucas. So I thought why not be the reason Dustin is never mentioned is because he isn't born yet.
Then when I first started writing the sequel I wanted the whole party at the wedding. And after much thought, their first child is merely named after Dustin and will be explored deeper in the sequel.
Tommy, Carol, and Steve (Nancy and Jonathan, too, just not Corroded Coffin and Chrissy and Jason or Robin) all went to the same high school. All born to rich parents.
It was expected that Carol would be the omega and the two boys would be alphas.
Steve presented first and got tested 24 hours after his first heat. Carol and Tommy commiserating with him being infertile.
Then Carol presents as an alpha, so now everyone expecting Tommy to be an omega as Tommy and Carol are the top couple at school (after Steve and Nancy broke up).
He presents as an omega and then he too is infertile (actually infertile none of the other omegas you meet in the story who are escorts aren't golden omegas, just Steve.)
Carol immediately dumps him and starts sleeping around with fertile omegas.
Also, like Steve's parents Tommy's parents blew up when they found out he was infertile, but they did the golden test. So not only were they "saddled" with a "broken" omega they were out a lot of money too.
Tommy actually wanted to be a wet nurse for the elite, as his tough guy persona was just that, an act. He wanted to go into one of the other nurturing fields but his parents forbade him.
They were going to get their money back from having such a useless son.
They were expecting him to get at least close to Steve's million dollar cherry price, but only got a third that.
His parents were livid again. But they took their money and never looked back.
In the eight or nine years it's been since they were auctioned off, Tommy's parents have never contacted him. They made sure he got into the best schools for the skills he would need as an escort, paying for it out of his bid price. But he's never received so much as a post card from them.
It took him three years to pay off his debt while it only took Steve less than one year.
So despite all the training and everything he got, he was never as popular as Steve.
Resentment grew.
He stayed with Starcourt Services because he had to prove to Carol, to his parents, to the world that he was better than Steve. That if he just had more time, he could beat Steve as one of the top earners at the agency.
It never happened. The wage gap between Steve and Tommy grew with each passing year.
And then the events of the story take place and Tommy does not have a good time.
So when Starcourt washes their hands of him he becomes a teacher.
His first year is tough, but rewarding. Only on the last day Tommy gets told he might not have a job come August. And he just breaks down. A parent of one of his now former pupils comes in because she left her jacket in his class. The parent is a single female alpha whose bondmate died shortly after the birth of their daughter due to complications.
And she just helps him through it. Then over the summer she helps him get a job at another school and they fall in love. Since now he's at different school then her daughter Tommy doesn't feel like a conflict of interest and they bond.
Now that's not to say that all this justifies Tommy's behavior. Because it absolutely doesn't. But I wanted him to find a happier life outside of being an escort as sort of a "this job can chew up and spit out and you still be a person at the end of it all".

The Unknown Heir.
part twelve.
masterlist of the Unknown Heir.
Gojo Satoru x fem! reader.
Synopsis: The reader returns after being gone for two years and leaving her boyfriend, Satoru, without giving him a reason. But now she doesn't come back alone.
Warning: English is not my first language, possible grammatical and spelling mistakes, some plot changes.
Tumblr media
Almost two months had passed since that event. Gojo never talks to you about it. He never asked you about it and he just acted like nothing happened. The day after he found out, all he said to you was:: "I allow you to go if your son needs you." That he would act so indifferent, it hurt you, because that only meant one thing: he was no longer interested in you.
But if there was something that made you happy, it was how quickly Ryusei had adapted this time. He liked spending time with his aunt Shoko and playing with his friend Rumi, that student who had hit her leg the day Satoru found out, and who had promised you that she wouldn't tell her teacher anything. And recently Ryu made a new friend: Ijichi, who one day found him in a hallway and almost made him faint when he saw a mini Gojo Satoru. You are not worried that Ijichi will find out, you trusted him and you knew that he was not going to tell Satoru anything.
On the other hand, you were doing very well in your job as an assistant. You had a good relationship with the students, Tetsuo and Rumi, and you had practically grown fond of them. But you couldn't say the same about your relationship with Gojo, who always told you some ill-intentioned comment loaded with tinges of resentment. You always avoided answering, although inside you were dying to do so.
"They were assigned a new mission!" you told Rumi and Tetsuo excitedly, but they didn't have the same attitude. "Again?" Tetsuo asked tiredly, "It's like the third time this week" he complained. You understood their tiredness, it was a lot for teenagers. "Yes, but this time you will go alone" you told them. "Why?" Rumi asked you, "Because your teacher Gojo is on a trip and they told me that this curse is much inferior to the previous ones you had to face, so I'm sure you can do it on your own" you told them both with a small smile.
You had decided to spend the free time you had with your son. You took him to various places in Tokyo. They went to eat various delicacies, which was Ryusei's favorite part, and lastly they went to a children's playground. Unfortunately, in the middle of this walk, your cell phone had turned off, therefore you were never able to answer the multiple calls from Ijichi and Shoko.
It was almost midnight when you came back to school. Ryusei had fallen asleep, that's why you had him carrying, his head was hidden in your neck and his hair and ears were covered with the hood of his jacket since it was cold, all you could see of him was his arm around your neck.
You walked through the corridors wanting to get to your room and go to bed, but that was not going to be possible. When you turned the corner of a corridor you found yourself face to face with Satoru. This time he wasn't wearing his typical blindfold, instead he was wearing glasses, similar to the ones he wore in his teens.
They both froze in the presence of the other. You were able to notice how his eyes swept over you and when they reached your son, his son, they stared at him. The nerves soon invaded you, but you also knew that he couldn't see it because Ryusei was covered up and the only thing sticking out was his arm.
He seemed to come out of some kind of trance and his expression changed to an annoyed one, which puzzled you. A strange sensation invaded you, there was something that was not right. Something had happened.

Guillroy-Jeong
Some families don’t survive a divorce. That wasn’t the case for the Guillory’s; in fact, it only brought Aston and Déon closer. Déon had never considered that the fisherman was experiencing a midlife crisis until he married Willow, a joyful artist half his age. Things were tense initially, but seeing how happy she made Aston was enough to diffuse the tension until Uriel arrived. Déon wants to support this new dynamic, but a needy toddler in the mix might force them to branch out of their bubble.

For better or worse, Greta has always been one to stand by her choices. She’s had a song in her heart from a young age, but put her dreams of being a pianist to the side once Albie was born. She works as a teacher to support her family, but hopes one day to play again. However, it would be good enough to see Albie fulfill his own dreams of becoming a professional dancer, temperamental though he may be. Like her mother and brother, Beatrice too is unapologetically developing musical aspirations.

When Bikram and Mia wed, they agreed their careers would come first before starting a family. Their first pregnancy surprised them, but Bikram pivoted to adjust to the new circumstances. Mia, however, was eager to get back to work after the birth. As a doctor, she provided enough for Bikram to cut back at the restaurant and care for Parker. There was a cost, though; today, Parker resents Mia. Wanting to avoid repeating that mistake, Mia is keen on loving her boys, the nerdy Antwan and wary Levi.

Being raised by Adeline had a profoundly different effect on her kids. Dasia, the eldest, often butted heads with the stubborn matriarch and found comfort in her high school sweetheart Imman. Baqil, the obvious favorite, stayed on the set path and wants to make her proud (coffee is his best friend when it comes to staying on top of his classes). Having married and had kids too young, Dasia and Imman reluctantly moved in and Adeline has since been keen on taking control of the girls’ rearing.

Falling for an artist was not at all what Rahim had planned. As an engineer, he values structure and practicality, but Gabrielle offers him a new lens to see the world through. This interior designer also takes note from her husband and has adopted his attention to detail in her own work. Their daughter Francesca has her moms’ creative spirit and shows promise (even if she focuses more on boys in her class than her painting skills) and Xavier is more interested in gaming than being book smart.

Landon had made many futile attempts to woo his high school crush Johanna, but it wasn’t until he sang a song for her on his guitar that she noticed him. They remain together today, accepting of the others’ quirks. Johanna can often fly off the handle, but Landon is always there to ease her mind. They try to do their part to save the world and instill ecofriendly values in their kids; lessons that young Averie has taken in good spirits. The unpredictable Reagan, however, is a different story.

Not long ago, Siobhan was living her dream; traveling and performing music with her friends. But creative differences led to a massive falling out and the band split up. Now directionless, she moved in with her older sister Bianca, who was happy to reconnect after years apart (and maybe get some help with her two boys) but Siobhan may as well be a third child. Desmond and Cale love having their aunt around though, and it’s nice at times to get a reprieve so Bianca can focus on her meditation.

Oertel
A woman of science with a lot of love to give, Sandra knew early on that she wanted to have a child and give them the warm upbringing that she never had. Despite not having a partner, she decided to undergo in-vitro fertilization. She certainly did a good job of instilling Jonas with a high level of confidence (almost to a point of arrogance) and even as a grown man, he has Sandra wrapped around his finger. He doesn’t take his studies seriously, but has a passion for all things outdoors.

Lily and Daphanie were ready to take on San Myshuno and on their way to becoming a power couple. Or so Lily thought, until Daphanie changed course. After adopting the girls, Daphanie drove a hard bargain on moving to a quieter part of town. She was able to adjust as a fashion designer, sending off submissions from the comfort of her home. Lily however finds herself commuting to the city, unwilling to forfeit her spot as an up-and-coming food critic, despite missing quality time with her family.

Gustavo takes his values seriously and expects others to do the same. Quite a negotiator, his wife Flavia is able to use her husbands’ political network to pass her green initiatives around town. Though cohesive as a pair, they differed in their parenting styles; Flavia always trusted her sons’ judgement while Gustavo often quarreled with their eldest Robbie, who only wants to party. Averse to conflict, Paolo does as he’s told, even forgoing his own wants to throw himself fully into his studies.

DECEMBER PROMPTS 🧊 — 2. EVAN BUCKLEY
Tumblr media
A/N: spoke it into existence and we get to see the 118 in just a few months! Too excited but disappointed about station 19. Anyways…here’s something fun??? and a little more my speed for the holidays.
PROMPT IS FROM HERE + I’m using: 20.) Caught Under the Mistletoe (teasing, shy, “It’s tradition”)
Synopsis: in which a moody reader wishes they could spend the holidays elsewhere and away from “the most wonderful time of the year,”…until Buck decides to walk through their childhood home.
WARNINGS: reader isn’t a Christmas lover by any means + going through a breakup—10 points for you if you can place the connection, language, family resentment & use of y/n + also gender-neutral friendly!
*GIF BELONGS TO @fireladybuckley !!!
❆⋆꙳•☃︎⋆꙳•✩⋆꙳•❅ ❆⋆꙳•☃︎⋆꙳•✩⋆꙳•❅ ❆⋆꙳•☃︎⋆꙳•✩
There were a combination of things that irritated you and Christmas happened to be one of them. Your family was one of those families that happened to be obsessed with Christmas and any sort of gathering, always have been and probably always will be—until they leave this earth. They were the neighbors that were welcoming to any and everyone and encouraged people to come on over with any shindig they threw. Unfortunately for you, you got stuck with attending this Christmas gathering because you moved back to Rhode Island right after you quit being a firefighter.
It was still a topic of many gossiping conversations with your mom’s “good friend,” deciding to bring it up in the living room, “y/n, do you ever want to be married? When are you going to start having a family of your own? Surely you must have found someone in sunny LA?”
Little did she know you did and in Chicago. You were surprised your mother took your boundaries into consideration when sharing certain information to her good friend…or did she know and was simply trying to get a rise out of you? Miriam was “good” at doing that.
You never liked Miriam, sorry not sorry. Mainly because she always had a opinion and liked to compare you to your older siblings. Your older brother was finally engaged to his long time girlfriend who had a face of a model, worked for a successful tech company, while also being a composer on the side and always had a good head on his shoulders. Then the middle child, your older sister was pregnant with twins and recently stepped down from being a pilot after almost fifteen years; was always the charmer and “favorite” according to friends of the family.
“I’ll start as soon as you stop scamming the elderly into marrying you so you can collect a check after they pass,” you smiled sweetly at Miriam, who’s mouth dropped and your older sister fought back a snicker from beside you in the sitting room, “I’m going to get a refill.”
You were just thankful your mother wasn’t near to hear this but you were sure with the snitch she called a best friend, she would repeat it and you would get a earful at some point tonight. Nonetheless you received a wink from your god-father and dad’s best friend up ahead, who was the designated pianist of the night and just finished up a tune by Nat King Cole.
Judah, your godfather was always lending a ear to listen since you were young and it seemed to still be the same sentiment more than your own parents but! That’s a different story for another day. You had to relish in the overload of wreaths that decorated every cabinet in your childhood kitchen, lightly scoffing and shaking your head as you filled up the flute with more champagne.
Sure you didn’t want to spend the holidays sulking but it only seemed to kick in more once people always felt the need to butt into your life. They didn’t speak on your accomplishments because it was never deemed as good enough, it was always a rule to follow into your family’s footsteps. Your mom’s a respectable elementary school teacher who hosts book clubs on Sunday’s with once strangers turned friends, your dad builds sailboats and is heavy involved in charity work and not just to say he did it but because of his own tough upbringing, your brother’s traveling all over the world due to his craft of being a composer and is so in love with his soon to be wife Alani, who’s also involved in building medical centers for poor communities—not just on her native land of Hawaii but countries as well, and your sister always knows just what to say to any and everyone, she’s so likable and building her family with a great guy, who isn’t just putting on for the cameras since he happens to be a well-known athlete.
Then there’s you…the sibling that’s just floating through life at thirty-one years old. Back at home with their parents after giving up a job that you thought you saw yourself doing up until retirement. Your head’s always been in the clouds but when your eyes were set on something you weren’t ever afraid to give it a try. Thats exactly what you did choosing to go to the academy out in California and worked your ass off to be a firefighter. You weren’t a fan of what people said after your severe injury…you just wanted to move on and always felt like you would be a firefighter at heart no matter what.
Most didn’t get that and it wasn’t okay with you but that didn’t stop you from putting one finger in the air.
Life will always lead you places and Rhode Island wasn’t your first choice but it was your best choice with the way the world shifts. Which is why you just wanted to get this holiday over with so it didn’t feel like you were constantly sinking from the inside out. The pretty lights, delicious eats, spending time with family, and finding joy was supposed to be a given but instead you were just ready to kick this year to the fucking curb for good.
If anyone asked you, New Years was way better because you can always start over especially if the year prior was not it for you. However one good thing came out of this year, you were one step closer to getting that home in New Mexico.
It took drumming on the counter to bring you out of your thoughts, making you snap your eyes at your brother who had a wicked grin on his round face. After pulling a face, you side eyed him, “what, Marcus?”
“Is that anyway to talk to your big brother?” He leaned against the counter, at pure ease.
Sipping at the flute, the bubbly went down nicely before you popped your tongue at the after taste then you responded, “what did you do?”
The thirty-seven year old sighs, “I didn’t do anything but you might want to send that energy to Larissa.”
Quickly glancing over your shoulder, you craned your neck to see back into the sitting room but couldn’t see your very pregnant sister anywhere. Shrugging your shoulders you turn back to the amusement on your brother’s face, “I don’t see her anywhere, so stop with the games and just spill.”
The both of you turned to the new voice that enters the kitchen from the left, “There you are! Look who I’ve found outside.”
If there was one person you wanted to push into the fireplace, now make it two, meaning you adding your sister to that list. Your eyes burned into her pretty beaming smile as she lightly jabbed a thumb in Evan Buckley’s direction. From behind them you spotted your brother-in-law, Kheri ready to enter the kitchen from the same opposite end but abruptly stopped as he easily picked up on what was happening and spun back around, hoping not to be seen by Larissa.
“Uh hey, y/n.” Evan awkwardly waved in your direction before you clenched your eyes shut and deeply exhaled.
Marcus whispers from your right, “that’s what.”
“I got it, Mark.” You hissed while he raised his hands in surrender, letting out a low whistle that sounded just perfect.
Evan glanced back and forth between the siblings, frowning, “I’m getting the sense that you were blindsided about me coming.”
A cackle bubbled past your lips while Larissa bounced on her toes, “I may have forgotten to mention it but when a party is going on…you just get wrapped up in so many other things.”
Evan nodded his head at this but he didn’t entirely believe that.
“Bullshit,” Marcus coughed out before smiling at Evan.
Larissa added, “I thought that you would be happy to see a friendly face here, y/n. I mean—you hate everyone else so…voila! You’re welcome.”
You declared, “If you weren’t pregnant with my nephews, I might just beat your ass to sleep with a lump of coal.”
“Hot coal or cold?” Larissa hummed, tapping her dimpled chin.
You scoffed, “I’d let you pick bitch.”
“How sweet,” Larissa winked as she turned back to pat Evan on the shoulder, “as you can see, this is a loving household and you’re only going to make it better for my dear sibling. So thank you so much for coming, Evan Buckley.”
Evan tilted his head to the side at this whole interaction, breathing out a laugh, “well…you kinda bullied me to so…”
“Oh is that how the conversation went down?” Marcus shoved some chips into his mouth, ignoring the glare you sent him.
“But,” Evan added, “I wanted to be here, it was the right thing to do and I missed you guys. Not really the east coast since it’s pretty damn cold here, man i keep forgetting that but it’s always nice to see a white Christmas and some faces that feel like home you know?”
Larissa placed her hand on her chest, “now wasn’t that beautiful, y/n?”
“So beautiful that I almost want to vomit on you, Larissa.” You coo at the Bob-wearing woman while Marcus continues watching this match.
Larissa scowled, “stop being a Scrooge and just be glad that Otis was busy.”
*Jazz music stops playing*
“What?” You gritted at the mention of your recent breakup.
Flights out to Chicago tended to get pricer and tricker during the whole pandemic but lucky for you, you managed your money much better now.
“Wrong thing to say,” Marcus mumbles, seeming to be the only one in the room that was aware that this was a touchy subject.
Swallowing you turned to the eldest in the room, “Did you know about that too, Mark?”
Marcus sighs, “I was there for that conversation yes…but I didn’t think Rissa was serious about Buckley after the call with Otis didn’t exactly work out.”
You couldn’t grasp why they—Larissa would think it would be okay to go behind your back and call Otis in the first place?!
“Is this what you’re gonna be like now, Ris? Trying to mold my love life and be in my business because you’re too bored with motherhood?” You snapped at the thirty-five year old who looked taken aback.
Larissa slowly speaks, “woow! That was kinda hurtful…I was just trying to do something nice because you always get like this around this time of the year and I figured a person you deeply adore would cheer you up but obviously I was wrong.”
Deeply adore felt like another stab to you.
Holding your hands out, you say enough just by that action which makes Larissa roll her eyes. She turns to the sea eye colored man and says, “Good luck with that one, the sticks pretty far up their ass this evening.”
Laughing to yourself, you don’t bother watching your sister leave the kitchen and turn back to the fridge in search of the desserts instead.
“Well…that was not as entertaining as I would have liked but you know that comment wasn’t cool right?” Marcus says while you send him a middle finger from inside the fridge, “noted but you better be over this damn attitude by the morning.”
Here you are in your thirties and you still had your brother thinking he can boss you around.
He says a few words to Buck and once the coast is clear, you spin back around to place the fruitcake on the large island counter. Just staring at the dessert makes you further nauseous and you motion with your eyes, “want a slice?”
“…only if you’ll join me?” Evan sucks air through his teeth, trying to put on a smile although it was more of a grimace.
You snicker, “don’t say what you think I want to hear. I wouldn’t feed this to Dudley.”
Evan begins to look around at the mention of the old bloodhound, “no way! He’s still alive?”
“Very much and probably sticking up the house somewhere away from everyone,” you laugh at the thought of the gassy dog as you pick up the cake, analyzing it in disgust before making your way to the garbage.
Evan nodded, “Ah so like it’s owner?”
“Watch it Buckley,” you wag a finger at him, “you just got here and you’re already talking shit to me?”
“I thought that’s what friends are for?” He shows off his laughter lines before taking a seat on one of the the bar stools, while you glanced at the flute and expensive champagne bottle before choosing the bottle it’s self, “…I would ask how’ve you been but I don’t know what kind of answer I’m going to get.”
Shrugging your shoulders you take a swing from the bottle and go into a two step as, “Holly Jolly Christmas,” beings to play making Buck shake his head at you playfully, “just jolly can’t you tell? I mean we haven’t spoken in months since I left LA—
“Right,” Buck agreed, “I wanted to give you some space and I thought I was being a good friend giving you that, although there were plenty of times where I just wanted to hear your voice.”
You snort, “don’t get mushy on me, Ev.”
Evan sighs, “and you ghosted me a few times.”
“Out of the respect of your relationship with Taylor—
“You didn’t even like Taylor or Abby?” Evan frowns, “and that was before we decided to give each other a try and with you debating about quitting after what happened at the parking garage.”
Long story short: you were at the 118 six months before Evan Buckley ends up walking through the doors. At the beginning you had everyone fooled with the way you gave him the cold shoulder in the beginning, as if your mothers weren’t the best of friends and you didn’t alternate summers between Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. You were forced to be friends but it’s not ever something you truly regretted. It’s like Toy Story, you had a friend in Buck and that was something you were thankful for. The both of you bonded over just being in the moment and while he was more impulsive than you, you found your footing just a bit earlier than he did.
You went to California as soon as you reached eighteen and fell in love with it that you didn’t ever want to come back. You didnt have dreams of being a firefighter but you were always passionate about having a positive impact on someone’s lives and fighting fires didn’t sound so bad. By the time you came back after visiting and being forced to go to the community college for half a semester, you withdrew and left without a word. It took a shared phone call from Buck and Maddie to get you to answer, with Maddie pleading with you just to call your parents whereas Buck encouraged you to keep going.
Shortly after, he was traveling around the world and sending you postcards too. Evan was always just your friend that you spent summers with then holidays and then birthdays to speaking on AIM if not every day then every other day. It was clear that the both of you were meant to be in each others lives…until you made the terrible decision to catch feelings. Out of all of the years that you’ve known this guy, you just had to feel a way—despite him fooling around on the job, which you tore into him more than bobby did. From random hook ups to potentially serious relationships—that you never agreed with, you just had to do it and you were stubborn and fought it for so long.
Having your face almost crushed by concrete would do it to you. You didn’t know if you were going to make it, that was your real taste of death—although you got hurt on the job before this was the one that really had you questioning everything. The team outside of the parking garage tried to keep Buck from getting to you but if there’s a will, there’s a way. You tried to blame it on the partially crushed skull once Buck brought it back up at not the best timing—after physical therapy but he was firm and stood on the words shared.
He broke up with Taylor, you told him to give it time and if he truly still felt the same months later, you’d give it a go. He respected that and once you were back to normal as you can be, it happened and it was short lived because you didn’t take the topic of marriage with him seriously. And it had nothing to do with what he thought.
Evan Buckley was always good enough, if not more.
“It was better getting used to the idea of not being in each others lives.” Was what you went with.
Evan pressed his arms onto the counter, “what do you mean?”
Sipping from the bottle again you state, “you must have felt the same way I felt when I got the news that you were struck. Like time is only temporary. We’ve known each other since we were what? Fourteen-fifteen? And sure that feels like forever but it really just means it starts over.”
Evan stares at you from underneath his eyelashes, “so…declining our friendship was the better answer for you?”
“Oh I’d think we’d always be friends…even if there’s distance.”
“That you created.” Evan points out, “I didn’t think you believed in alternate universes.”
You swallow, “I didn’t, until you told me what it was like in that coma.”
“Then you left…to be with Otis.” Evan fills in the blanks while wiggling his eyebrows which makes you scoff, “want to talk about it?”
You blink, “I just told my sister to mind her business…do you want me to deliver the same thing? Let’s catch up and focus on you…I’m surprised you’re not in PA.”
“I let Maddie and chim deal with that.” Evan says, “Christmas Eve was enough for me and poor Jee, I should have taken her with me.”
Resting your chin against the palm of your hand you say, “that bad huh?”
“Ah the usual. You know how parents can be,” Evan chats, “they’re really pushing to meet Natalia.”
Squinting you try to recall the name as Evan informs, “right…uh someone I met on the scene. She’s a death doula.”
“A what?”
“Someone who helps people who are facing death find peace with it. Like the good version of what a hospice is supposed to be.” Buck tells, coming to terms that there has been gaps in what they should know, yet this was what you wanted apparently.
Tapping against the glass you say, “and she’s your…girlfriend?”
“Well, yeah.” Buck smiles a bit while you hum, taking a swing from the bottle, “what was that response?”
You shrug, “just surprised your parents would want to meet her…does Maddie like her?”
“She doesn’t not not like her.” Evan frowned.
“How long have you been dating?”
“Not long…uh what’re you getting at?”
“Look, I don’t know her and I’m not going to further rain on anybody’s parade but just be careful. Take your time you know?”
Evan scratches at his birth mark above his brow and huffs, “thought you were a big believer in time not lasting forever and starting over…That’s what I’m doing.”
Nodding your head you say, “I’m not judging you.”
“Good because my plan wasn’t to argue with you here at your childhood home in the kitchen on Christmas.” Buck tells as he takes in the decor, “We can hash anything else out at a later date because it’s the most wonderful time of the year right? I’m here until the 31st by the way.”
“When exactly did you drop in?”
“The 21st.”
“Oh you’re staying for awhile.”
“I think I should.” He waved his hand for the bottle which he takes a swing at and lets out a deep burp, excusing himself with a grin after you scrunch up your nose.
Snatching the bottle back you leave it unattended as you peek through the trays of food, thinking about another round since the preview of desserts were lackluster.
“Huh,” Buck says now peering above his head, “when did that get up there?”
Turning you attention back to a old friend in the maroon sweater, you follow his gaze to the mistletoe hanging from the ceiling above his head. “Which one of your siblings pulled this one?”
“Don’t think that was their doing honestly,” you reputed, “feels very traditional and something my dad would do.”
Evan thinks about it and seems to agree, remembering how affectionate the man tended to be back then. “Well…it’s tradition and we shouldn’t break it.”
“Don’t know if you notice Ev, I thought the all black attire would be a giveaway but I simply do not care about this holiday.”
“I’ve noticed—
“And didn’t you just say you have a girlfriend? I can kiss anybody else and tend to very soon.” You almost went into a daydream state of the all the possible contenders you’d lock lips with in just a few days.
“True but who are you going to find that’s as gorgeous as me?” Buck challenged as he placed a hand on his chest.
“Did Eddie fly in with you guys?”
“That’s not funny.”
“So you cross the line at your work husband but not nat the death doula?” You quizzed the tousled haired man.
“Why are you giving her a whole title like that?”
“It’s Natalia’s profession…?”
“Yeah but nobody calls you: y/n the retired firefighter turned air traffic controller.”
“You don’t know that and you just did.”
Buck felt his eye twitch, “I was giving an example!”
“Hey, inside voices! The singing and music is loud enough. Not to mention the carolers that will be here by eight and will probably give me nightmares tonight—
Evan shakes his head, “no I don’t think you understand. We have to kiss or else it’s going to bring bad luck in our love lives for who knows how long and I could really use a consistent love and what better person to do that with than you.”
One thing about Buck, he was a thousand percent superstitious but that wouldn’t stop you from poking fun.
“Evan Matthias Buckley…are you flirting with me?” You tease as you caress the counter while slowly make your way around the island.
The man appears almost shy now as you grip his face, taking in the features you’ve come to known and appreciate. Evan was still him regardless of the miles you put in between each other. With his hands now on your waist you enjoyed the moment because face it, it was always nice to be held, so you stared into his eyes for a moment and then his tulip tinted lips.
Lips that you didn’t mind on yours or anywhere on your body once upon a time…until you self sabotaged. You could have married evan and would have in a heartbeat but you also felt marriage wasn’t for you. You didn’t want to fuck that up just like you did everything else.
And that wasn’t really true, that’s just the bad parts of your brain getting in the way but you were working it out in therapy. However a smile was on your lips now that you pressed your forehead to the man that’s seen all sides to you before and you could have sworn Evan was holding his breath, just wondering how this would work.
Yet he was the one insisting that they share a kiss!
Caressing the scruff that was along his jaw, you lightly pinched his face, holding him in place as you put a lingering kiss right beside the corner of his lips. The deflation was evident and you didn’t know whether to take that as relief or disappointment but Evan pulled you into a hug filled with warmth anyway.
Which you welcomed, arms locked around his broad shoulders before resting a hand on the back of his head. He squeezed you just right and if you wanted to be in your soft era tonight, you may have shed a tear but pushing that to the side felt better for now. It’s been awhile but you didn’t want to cross that line especially if things were serious with Natalia.
Evan didn’t know about Otis or how you were battling moving on from that but he’ll take what he can get from you. Whenever you were ready then he’d always be around and that’s something he wanted to remind you of but being here with you on this holiday—even if you were being a complete grinch about it! felt like he made the right decision.
“You know Ev Bev,” you started as you pulled back but kept your hands locked around his shoulders, “has anyone ever told you that you reek of spruce?
Evan blinks, “no one’s ever told me I smell like a tree before…but considering the job? I’m not offended.”
“Well I am. You’re supposed to boycott all things Christmas with me if you still consider yourself my bestie,” you shook your head in sorrow.
You’re ready to untangle yourself but Evan just tightens his arms around you, leaning forward to get a whiff of you, “and you smell like fruitcake.”
Faux gagging gets Evan to widen his eyes and loosen his grip, “don’t make me sick—
“I think that’s enough champagne for you.”
“You’re right, it has my toes buzzing but I can definitely go for something stronger which my parents don’t have but I’ll sneak out before the Carolers get here to get some.”
“Or…you can find the true beauty in Christmas that doesn’t have anything to do with alcohol.” Evan offered while you gave him a unimpressed stare, “maybe next year then?”
“Oh I plan to as soon as the new year hits and I get some answers.” You unravel yourself from him and move to take a seat on the other velvet stool.
Evan holds his hands out, “…care to elaborate?”
“Sure, why the hell not? After spending too much time here and becoming financially stable, I’ve finally decided to buy a house.” You give jazz hands.
“That’s fantastic news!” Evan perks up, “Wait…does anybody else know?”
“Nope, just you my friend.” You sigh, “I should know if they accepted my offer by the 29th the realtor says but can expect some delays based on the stupid holidays so…fingers crossed.”
Evan snickers, “then that’s something to celebrate and I’m sure your family will be happy for you.”
“Maybe, maybe not. My decisions are always based on selfishness apparently.” You fold your hands, “I know the first thing that’s going to be said and then comes the guilt tripping but I don’t want to be in this place anymore. I’ve been here a good portion of my life and had to come back because the world decided to go apocalyptic. I’m tired of feeling stuck and New Mexico can be the freedom I’ve always been searching for.”
Evan took in your words carefully. He knew you weren’t always this down but stepping away as a firefighter definitely triggered that and the old childhood insecurities resurfaced living here again although you tried to bury them. He’s been around the world while your family tried to keep you sheltered—even into your adulthood, you were always the one who wanted something different than them. Evan saw that the first day he met you and instantly took a liking to you, although it took more convincing on your end. New Mexico was far from Rhode Island but not too bad from Los Angeles.
“It will be and we’ll make the best of it.” Evan squeezed the tension from between your shoulder blades.
Looking at him you echo, “we?”
“Do you really think you can keep hiding from me? Now that you let me back in, you’re not getting rid of me again.” Evan grinned in excitement while you groaned, “We have a house to plan for, like when’s the expected move in date when you’re approved?”
You shrugged, “realtor man Danny didn’t tell me that exactly but if I had to guess, probably sometime in February.”
“That works,” Evan nods, “if it falls around Maddie’s birthday I might just suggest New Mexico.” He winks at you while you scoff.
“Don’t you think you’re jumping the gun? Who’s to say I’d even give you my address?”
Despite saying this you knew Buck would always find a way and it’s not something you were truly against. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t miss seeing him around but ultimately that was your choice.
“Ouch, that’s no way to treat the guy that’s had your back since we were kids and is about to make you a mean peppermint mocha.” Evan says in a sing song tone as he drums on the table before sliding down from the chair.
Tilting your head at the thought you reply, “will it be spiked?”
Evan shakes his head as he makes his way over to the espresso machine, “I’m trying to save your liver so that’ll be a negative.”
“Boooo! Buck sucks more than Santa! Tomato, tomato.” You gave a thumbs down as Evan chuckles to himself.
Buck was attempting to bring you holiday cheer, you could feel yourself sort of exhaling as you watched him move around the kitchen. Whenever Evan was around, it usually felt like putting the negative on pause because you tended to forget about it for awhile thanks to his infectious spirit.
“Are you two playing nice?” The voice of your brother, Mark fills the room as he enters the kitchen once more and now holding the hand of his fiancée, Alani who teasingly scrunches her nose up with a smile at you two.
Throwing your head back, you sigh, “as nice as I can be, Marcus.”
“That’s not saying much,” he goes to elbow Buck jokingly, who nods with a shrug.
Alani takes the seat beside you, “so…what we really want to know is, did you guys share a kiss and decide to fall deeply in love with each other?”
“Lani!” Marcus warns while the curly haired woman lifts her shoulders.
You laugh, “and this is why I’ve always liked you Lanz, you’re never on any bullshit, unlike Mark and Ris.”
“Yikes, I’m not touching that one.” Alani reached for the champagne bottle.
“You may have actually made her cry by the way,” Marcus announces making Evan peer at you over his shoulder.
Turning your eyes into slits you question, “made who cry?”
“Larissa.”
You huff, “she pissed me off.”
“Yeah but you didn’t have to attack her motherhood which she has yet to really experience…” Marcus states and you take a breath.
You knew that comment was harsh but you never lacked a back bone. When anyone got on your nerves, you were going to tell them and didn’t care who they were or where you were. It’s a defense mechanism and yes that was something else you were working on.
“I’ll make up with her after I get into this spiked peppermint mocha.” You grinned in content.
Evan corrects, “how many times do I have to tell you, it’s not spiked?”
“Until you change your mind, sugar plum.”
“Yuck,” Marcus laughs while Alani smirks.
Sooner than later, Buck is handing out four cups of peppermint mocha and crouches over the counter beside you as you all take in the festive drink while, “Deck the halls,” starts to play for the sixth time this evening. Normally you would be considering sticking your head inside of the oven or making your severe allergic reaction act up by eating a gingerbread cookie just so you could get out of listening to this boring music but somehow you tune it out.
Physical touch was how Buck liked to be loved so you didn’t think much of it as you looped a hand around the crease of his arm. acts of service was how he gave love. He glanced over at you while you listened to whatever your brother was blabbing about and when you caught his stare, you thought to yourself, maybe reconnections should have been on your wishlist.
A tender peppermint kiss to your temple was enough to solidify that and this time? You fought the urge to playfully smack Evan’s scruffy jaw to get off you and allowed the affection from the man you knew for years.
You let the love soak in, as cheesy as it sounds but isn’t that what Christmas is all about?
Who really knows?
You’re more of a New Year’s Eve lover anyway…

Okay, so Selina the earth fairy as an antagonist
S6 did this by, for some insane reason, by making Selina Bloom's childhood friend who's always had magic which doesn't work on literally every level. So I'm going to try and come up with some ideas that make parts of it work
Selina the earth fairy that was taught by Eldora:
Tbh this is the easiest option
Selina is an earth fairy from the old days along with Eldora. During the WotBC attempted wiping out of all magic users they fled to Tir Na Nog and live under Morgana and Nebula
The Legendarum is a book created by ancient Faries that Selina's family has been in charge of caring for for generations
When the fairies of vengeance are released Selina is soooo excited to help kill the Wizards and the Winx, and their leader Bloom take their revenge away from them by complaining that they shouldn't be allowed to kill the people that tried to WIPE THEM OUT
Selina is pissed, and her teacher Eldora, the woman that saved her life, going on about how forgiveness is the way isn't helping
Season 5 teaches her about the rest of the magical dimension, season 5 teaches her about the Trix
The Trix are blinded by their desire for revenge and make the perfect pawns. They don't care what they lose as long as the winx don't win
And Selina assures them, the Winx will not win
Selina the earth fairy that was Bloom's friend:
This one is a very elegant solution me thinks and it's the FUN one.
Selina and Bloom are childhood friends and the main targets for Mitzi's bullying. Bloom has kind parents, Selina does not, and for eight hours a day they have to listen to people talk badly about them. Mitzi never puts hands on them but they're social pariah's and deal with constant verbal harassment and false accusations
First year of highschool is more of the same and Selina is prepared for it to be them against the world again in their second year, and then Bloom never comes to class
Selina is alone to deal with the bullying she at least had a confidant in Bloom to at least tolerate it with, and now she's alone
Mitzi tells everyone that Bloom was sent to a school that caters to the mentally ill to finally convince the 16 year old that fairies aren't real, and Selina makes things worse for herself by defending Bloom
They text each other, not often and Bloom won't tell her what new school she's going to but they still text. Selina comes over when Bloom goes back to earth (and goes home before the Trix show up)
And then the next year Bloom goes to Mitzi's Halloween party with her new, cool, pretty, friends. Bloom excitedly tells her about it, she's finally going to make Mitzi the butt of the joke and all Selina can think is that she's been replaced
That's not fair though? Bloom is allowed to be happy at her new school so she bites her tongue and pushes down her resentment and rejects Bloom's offer to come with
Next year is...fine. Bloom comes to her graduation party, and she's a bit mopey that she didn't graduate with honors like her new friends but is over all more excited to hear about Selina's college plans. Bloom goes on a trip in the middle of summer and comes back glowing because "the mistake in my grades was fixed and now I have honors!" And it sounds like a lie but Selina doesn't bother calling her out on it. I mean? What if she's telling the truth
Then season 4 happens, and then it's revealed that Bloom is a fairy
Not only did Bloom replace her with better, prettier friends, but she also lied to Selina about being a fairy. Lied to her face about everything related to magic because apparently Bloom never trusted her
And Selina burns with resentment
Selina stops responding to Bloom's texts and avoids her. Everyone asks Selina if she knew, if Bloom told her, who those aliens are, and all Selina has is half truths from the stories Bloom spun her to respond with
Seeing Mitzi become a fairy, unaware of the dead magic that run though her, unaware that the power Mitzi was given comes with a price no one should have to pay, Selina is furious. Incandescent
Magic returned to earth and Selina can float small objects. She's one of the few people that after the earth's magic core was repaired gained magic and she's on the bottom of the scale of power in a group categorized by how they're not as strong as those who can use magic without the core
Hatred fills her lungs like smoke
Season 5 Selina sticks to herself. Bloom usually isn't on earth like she was last year and this Diaspro chick who came from a different planet to help earth get caught up with the rest of the dimension is on the TV all the time talking about Bloom. Selina hates the fact that this woman who met Bloom though a knock-down drag-out fight knows Bloom better than Selina ever did
Did Bloom ever think of her as a real friend?
(Bloom couldn't take the one person that was her friend though all of that calling her a liar, she comes to regret this)
Eventually, while stumbling around the woods, far away from faces that could mock and lie to her she stumbles across a book. The Legendarum. It promises her power, Bloom's regret, importance. All she has to do is open it, anyone with magic can, her strength doesn't matter with the Legendarum doing the work for her
How could she ever refuse?

Chapter One
“Are you sure you can’t drive me to the airport in the morning?” I asked Kenneth wearily. I knew he was reluctant to allow me to go to Nashville for Riley’s bachelorette weekend. He says he’s worried about my safety, but I know the truth is that he doesn’t want me to go out without him, especially with a group of girls.
He groaned, “I have to be at work by 8 a.m. and your flight leaves at noon. I’m not sure if you know how time works but–”
“My plane leaves at 2 p.m. I have to be there by noon,” I interjected before he finished his insult.
“Whatever. Either way, I can’t swing it. Just drive yourself or get one of your friends to give you a ride,” he said as he shut the bathroom door in my face.
He knows good and well that Riley and our other friends live hours away in other states. Everyone got out of this town the second we graduated college. Well, everyone except me. Kenneth took over his father’s business so I stayed behind too. I don’t resent him for it; I love my small town. I love that my family is no more than 15 minutes away in every direction. I love my job and my students. I love my  simple two-bedroom home where I spend most of my evenings alone with Sassy, my border collie. I love my comfortable life. But I hate that my best friend since middle school took a marketing job that required her to move 738 miles away from me.
Life sometimes gets lonely when your closest friends are your coworkers who are old enough to be your parents. Finding a teaching job in this small town was easy because I went to school here. My classroom is the same classroom I once sat in to learn 9th grade English; now I am on the other side of the desk.
When Riley asked me to be her maid of honor, I cried tears of joy… and jealousy. Kenneth and I have been together since we were 16 years old. Although we celebrated our 10-year-anniversary in August, we were quickly approaching the two-year-anniversary of our engagement. Riley met her fiancé less than a year ago; yet, I am the one putting on a bridesmaid dress before a wedding dress.
“Can you turn off the light?” Kenneth’s question snapped me back to reality. I looked at the piles of folded laundry on my side of the bed with my barren suitcase next to them.
“I’m still packing,” I said.
“Well, some of us don’t get to go to Nashville. Some of us have to go to work to help fund a trip we don’t even get to go on,” he responded.
Ouch. Yes, it’s true Kenneth is the breadwinner. His father’s business is lucrative and Kenneth does well for us. He has asked me to quit my job time and time again since he can support us financially. Everyone knows a teacher’s salary isn’t much to brag about, but I still feel pride in bringing home a paycheck every month. I love my job too much to quit. It’s already lonely in the evenings; I can’t imagine staying home all day by myself too.
“You know I booked the cheapest flights I could find. Everyone else is flying in together and I am arriving a day early because tomorrow’s flights were more expensive than–”
“Turn off the light!” Kenneth snapped.
I collected my laundry piles and tossed them into my suitcase before shoving it to the floor. I guess I will have to finish packing in the morning after he leaves for work. I put my phone on the charger, turned off the light, and climbed into bed. Sassy jumped into bed to sleep by my feet, our nightly routine. She has always been my protector. I am going to miss her so much while I am gone, but I am looking forward to this miniature vacation. I haven’t had a trip to look forward to since my senior year of college. Kenneth is always too busy with work for us to have a vacation together. He doesn’t like to fly but he also gets car sick. If anywhere I wanted to go required more than two hours on the road, count him out. Plus it will be nice to see Riley again. I shut my eyes and tried my best to fall asleep. I am used to going to bed angry. Anger is like melatonin to me at this point. But the excitement and longing kept me awake. I pulled my headphones out of my nightstand and connected them to my phone. I scrolled through my Spotify playlists until I found one to soothe me to sleep. I selected “Boyfriends” by Harry Styles and the irony wasn’t lost on me as I drifted off…
Chapter Two
I collected the parking ticket from the machine as I drove into the airport’s economy lot. I found a spot closest to the entrance, but I knew I was still going to have to walk a billion miles. The economy lot is furthest from the airport but it’s the most affordable option. I wanted to save every dollar I had for this trip, so I figured it was a small sacrifice. I parked and started to collect my things from the trunk of my car. I grabbed my carryon suitcase and hung my purse on its handle before I started my trek to the airport. Anxiously double-checking every item on my pack-list in my head, I walked through the double doors of the airport. I made my way up to security and got in line behind what seemed to look like the entire population of my town. Luckily, the line moved fairly quickly as I approached the TSA agent’s desk. I placed my luggage on the conveyor belt, removed my sandals, and emptied my pockets.
The large woman in the TSA uniform waved me through the body scanner. “Come on through, sweetie.”
I stood on the yellow marker and held my hands above my head. I knew I had nothing on me that would set off any alarm, but this moment always made me hold my breath.
“You’re good, sweetie. Have a good day,” she smiled as I breathed a sigh of relief. I collected my things and scurried off to the side to put my shoes back on. When I grabbed my phone from the security tub, I noticed that I had two missed calls from Kenneth.
I called him back as I tried to make my way through the crowd, pulling my luggage behind me. He answered on the first ring.
“Why didn’t you answer my calls?” he asked with a bit of anger in his tone.
“I was going through security. I couldn’t be on my phone,” I explained.
“Well, I only have so long of a lunch break and I wanted to check in before you got on your flight. What time are you set to land again?” he asked.
“3:30 p.m. for the hundredth time,” I sighed.
“Ok, you need to text me as soon as you land,” he commanded.
“Sure thing,” I replied.
“Alright, well I’m gonna get back to work,” Kenneth said.
“Hey, don’t forget to give Sassy a treat after she goes outside because that’s what she’s used to. Oh, and don’t forget that she likes to have dinner at–”
“I’ve owned the damn dog just as long as you have. You don’t have to give me instructions,” Kenneth cut me off.
“Can you send me pictures of her throughout the day? I’m really going to miss her,” I pleaded.
“You’re going to miss the dog more than me,” Kenneth scoffed.
I thought about that comment for a moment as I approached my gate. I glanced over the TV screen to verify my boarding time.
“Wow, you don’t even deny it,” Kenneth said.
“I’m sorry. I got distracted by my gate. It’s really busy here. I will text you when I land. Please send me pictures of Sassy. I will keep you posted. I love you,” I nearly lied into the phone.
“Love you too,” he said halfheartedly before ending the call.
While pulling my belongings behind me, I found a spot to sit down in the waiting area of my gate. The airport seemed to be a madhouse, but it looked like my flight wouldn’t be so crowded after all. There were more empty seats than I expected. I checked the “Nashville Babes” group text on my phone. I’ve had the notifications silenced for weeks because I can’t stand getting notified every 10 minutes. I asked Riley to text me separately if there was anything I really needed to know. I hate that I appear to be an unsupportive maid of honor, but seeing my phone light up constantly throughout the day–and night–has been a nightmare for my anxiety. Riley knows and understands that I get overwhelmed easily. She took charge of planning her own bachelorette weekend because she knew I would get stressed out. I still feel guilty about it, but she assured me that she truly wanted to plan it. I wasn’t going to argue. She’s always been the most supportive and constant person in my life. I hate that I am secretly jealous of her when I should be reciprocating the support.
“Now boarding Group A!” the airline attendant announced over the gate’s speaker. I checked my boarding pass: Group C. Once again, I took the most affordable option on the cheapest flight I could find. Being last to board on Southwest meant that I am doomed to a middle seat between two strangers. I just hope that whomever I get stuck between put on deodorant today. When I say I’m looking forward to a vacation, I mean I am looking forward to a break from 15-year-olds’ body odor. One of the many drawbacks of being a teacher.
“Excuse me,” a man in a white sweater and khaki pants said as he tried to shuffle by me. I thought he looked funny wearing both a baseball hat and sunglasses indoors. That doesn’t look suspicious in an airport. I moved my things from his path and he headed to board the plane. So he’s in Group A… This guy has money. Well, maybe not. He is flying Southwest after all. I’m sure I could have booked Group A tickets, but I didn’t want to ask Kenneth for any more money than I already needed. This trip was fully funded by me and I was proud of that. Well, until Riley picked the most expensive Airbnb in Nashville. I almost fainted when I received her Venmo request. I was grateful she didn’t charge me extra for staying one night by myself since I had an earlier flight. I swallowed my pride and asked Kenneth if I could have an extra $400 to add to my savings to help with my portion of the bill. He gave me the money with no issues, but he has enjoyed holding it above my head every chance he’s had.
Once I heard the announcement for Group C, I grabbed my things and headed to stand in line to board. I glanced at the Nashville Babes group text: 80 missed notifications. I cleared it from my phone as I opened the Southwest app to show my boarding pass. Once I was scanned in, I headed through the hallway to board the plane. I stepped on the aircraft and gazed over the heads of strangers who were all avoiding eye contact. I knew they were all pleading to themselves that I wouldn’t take their middle seat. The flight wasn’t too packed, but there were no empty window or aisle seats left. Wonderful. I scanned the rows once more looking for any open overhead space when I noticed someone’s eyes locked on me. Eyes that I hadn’t seen before; yet, a face that looked all too familiar. The Group A stranger had removed his sunglasses and was staring at me. I started to move down the aisle when he whispered to the guy in the row with him. Whoever he was, he looked angry receiving whatever news he just got. No chance I want to sit between a bickering couple. I located a row nearby filled with two women who looked rather normal. I went to lift my luggage to put in the overhead space when the Group A stranger grabbed my suitcase.
“Allow me,” he said with a smile that displayed the tiniest of gaps between his unusually white teeth. But rather than placing the suitcase in the compartment I had decided on, he placed it in the compartment above his row.
“Would you prefer the window seat or the aisle seat?” he asked.
“What happened to the man who was sitting with you?” I answered his question with a question.
“I asked him to sit elsewhere. I figured you’d prefer a better spot,” he smiled that smile again.
Bewildered, I responded: “I’ll take the aisle.” No way would I be confined to the window seat with this strange man trapping me in. I needed an escape route in case he was a pervert or something.
“Perfect. I love to watch the clouds anyways,” he said as he shuffled into the row. I followed suit but sat to keep an empty seat between us.
“Why didn’t your friend just sit in the middle if you wanted to give me a good seat?” I asked confusingly.
“That’s my–um–assistant. He can stand to sit elsewhere for the short flight since I see him all of the time. I’d prefer to sit next to someone more pleasant anyways,” he joked.
God he’s adorable. A little too forward but adorable nonetheless.
“Well, I appreciate you doing that for me. I figured I was going to have to sit between two strangers, but an aisle seat is definitely a welcomed surprise,” I said.
I opened my phone to inform the Nashville Babes that I had boarded and would be landing in roughly an hour and a half. I completely ignored the hundreds of messages that came before mine. I was about to put my phone on airplane mode when I received a private text from Riley.
Riley: “You ok?”
Me: “Yes, of course. I’m so excited to see you! Get ready to lose oxygen from my hug when I see you tomorrow.”
Riley: “Just checking. Haven’t heard from you in a couple days. Let me know when you land and when you make it to the Airbnb. Safe travels, love.”
I sighed as I read her message over and over. I smiled and held the message down to “love” it before searching through my purse to retrieve my headphones.
“Already getting the music out and we haven’t even heard the safety instructions yet. I think you need to pay attention,” I heard the adorable stranger say.
“There isn’t much I can do if there were an emergency. Knowing that I need to breathe oxygen through a mask that will drop in front of my face is all I need to know,” I said with a laugh.
“Just make sure to put your own mask on before you help me with mine,” he said.
“Who says I would help you?” I turned to him and asked.
“I helped you with your luggage. I helped you get an aisle seat. The least you can do is help me breathe,” he said with a smile that displayed his perfect teeth again.
I laughed and replied, “Ok, well I am not banking on there being an emergency, so no need to worry.”
“Does anyone ever bank on an emergency?” he asked. Smart ass.
I rolled my eyes and placed my headphones in my ears. I opened my Spotify app to find the playlist I downloaded to prepare for the flight.
“Who are you listening to?” the stranger asked. I am beginning to wish I had sat between the two women after all. Not having to play 20 questions with this guy would have been worth sacrificing the extra space I had in this aisle seat.
“Nobody yet as I literally just opened the app,” I responded.
“Can I give you a song suggestion?” he asked.
“Um… I guess?” I replied questioningly.
“May I?” he asked as he reached for my phone.
“I’m not giving a stranger my phone,” I said with a shocked expression to my tone. The nerve of this guy.
“What am I going to do? Run off with it? You’ve got me trapped in,” he smiled showing that cute, tiny gap again.
“No thanks,” I said as I went to start my music.
Suddenly, he unbuckled his seat belt and stood up from his seat. I stared at him wide-eyed as a flight attendant stopped by our row to say, “Sir, please stay seated and buckle your seat belt.”
He waved to the irritated attendant and displayed a soft smile as he sat in the middle seat beside me. Immediately I was hit with his fresh cologne scent that made me crave more as he started to buckle the seat belt. You have got to be kidding me.
“What are you doing?” I somehow yelled and whispered simultaneously.
“Please let me pick a song for you to listen to. Then I will leave you alone. I promise,” he said with a slight pout to his lips. God, his lips. How did I not notice those yet?
“Give me your phone in exchange,” I said with an air of confidence in my voice.
“Ah, so she’s smart and she’s beautiful,” he said as he reached into the pocket of his khaki pants. I tried to hide the blush that I could feel warming my cheeks. I couldn’t remember the last time I received a compliment.
“I’m not unlocking it, but I will let you hold it for ransom,” he said as he held his phone out to me. I took it from his hands as his fingers brushed against mine. I felt an immediate rush of energy run through me as our hands briefly touched. What was that? I handed him my phone and watched as he typed the words “Greta Van Fleet” into the search bar in my Spotify app. He made a face that almost seemed disappointed, and then clicked  to download the band’s complete playlist. He attempted to hand my phone back to me, and I stared at him confusingly as I reached for it. I was too busy watching him with my phone; I never even glanced at his lockscreen. Before I gave him back his phone, I tapped the screen to see what his background was. On display was a photo of a crowd of lights, but the photographer must have been standing on the stage when they took it. There had to be thousands of phone flashlights in this one photo. It reminded me of tiny stars in the midnight sky.
“I took that picture, ya know?” he said with a proud smile.
“Are you a concert photographer?” I asked.
He let out a wild laugh and then glanced down at my phone’s screen, “It’s almost finished downloading.”
“I thought you said a song suggestion. A. One. Singular. Not a whole playlist,” I said.
“I mean… I wanted to give you options,” he said.
Waving his phone to him I asked, “So, is this crowd picture from this band’s concert?”
“Yes,” he said, like there was more he was wanting me to ask. I decided to have the upperhand and gave him his phone back without asking another question. I watched my screen as the playlist was nearly completely downloaded.
“I’m Josh,” he said like he was annoyed that I hadn’t asked for his name yet.
“Hi, Josh,” I replied disinterestedly.
“And you are…?” he asked.
“I’m about to listen to this playlist,” I said with a matter-of-fact tone.
“Smart, beautiful, arrogant…” he muttered under his breath.
“I’m going to pretend that I didn’t hear that,” I said as I put my headphones in. “You can move back to the window now.”
“We are about to take off. If I stand up, I’ll cause a scene and then we’ll be delayed. Then I’ll probably become a flight risk and be forcibly removed off of the plane. Everyone would be recording the fiasco and posting it online. Let’s just avoid all of that and I’ll stay seated here,” he said with a smirk.
“You have quite the imagination…” I said hiding my smile.
“I’m sacrificing a coveted window seat for you. I hope you know that,” he replied.
“I never asked you to change seats,” I said.
“No, but you didn’t object either,” he responded with a smug expression on his face.
Once the playlist completed its download, I switched my phone to airplane mode. I sighed in frustration and scrolled through the playlist to view the songs. Whoever this band is, they have quite a discography. I wanted to ask him which song I should start with but I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction. I scrolled until the title “Trip the Light Fantastic” caught my eye. Intrigued, I selected the song and tilted my head back to listen to it. Before I shut my eyes, I noticed Josh was staring at my phone to see which song I chose first. I closed my eyes and relaxed as the lyrics danced through my ears. I have never heard anything like this before. I was so entranced in the music that I didn't even realize we were now speeding down the runway about to take off. The music, plus the feeling of lifting off the ground, was nearly overwhelming in the best way possible. I felt like I had stepped into the song itself. When the song ended, I didn’t want to open my eyes. I wanted to stay in this moment for as long as possible.
“What did you think?” I heard Josh ask as I removed my headphones.
“Wow,” is all I could formulate. My thoughts ran wild and I wanted to describe the feeling I just had, but I couldn’t put it into words.
“What did you think about the guy’s voice?” he asked.
“The dude is talented as hell. I just wish I could understand everything he sang,” I said.
There was that wild laugh of his again. “Yeah, I think the band receives that criticism a lot,” he said with a shrug. I truly wanted to listen to another song, but I didn’t want him to know I was so interested in this band. I guess one could call me stubborn.
“While I love to share music with new people, I’d love to talk some more if that’s alright with you,” he said sheepishly.
“I feel like you would talk to me even if it weren’t alright with me,” I said sarcastically.
“Smart, beautiful, arrogant,” he repeated. I playfully pinched his arm.
“Hey!” he exclaimed as he rubbed his arm.
“I let it slide the first time. I wasn’t going to let you get away with it again,” I said.
“Now that I’ve been physically assaulted… Are you going to Nashville for business or pleasure?” he asked.
“I’m attending a bachelorette party,” I said.
“For you or someone else?” he asked, looking down at the dainty ring on my finger. The same ring that has been without a wedding band companion for nearly two years. The same ring I wanted to leave inside the jewelry box before I left my house this morning.
“It’s for my best friend Riley,” I said with a sadness that I couldn’t hide like I normally do.
As if Josh sensed the change in my mood, he completely turned his body to face mine. I could tell that he positioned his head to get me to look at him. I locked eyes with him and it was like I could actually see the wheels in his head turning.
“How long will you be in Nashville?” he asked.
“For four nights. I had to take two days off from work, but I’m looking forward to it,” I said with a forced smile.
“You don’t sound like someone who is excited to attend a bachelorette party,” he said.
“It’s just a lot, but I am excited for Riley,” I said trying to convince the both of us that I really was excited.
“What do you do for work?” he asked while continuing to hold eye contact. As I stared into his dark brown eyes, I studied the long lashes that I would kill to have.
“I teach 9th grade English,” I responded.
“Smart, beautiful, arrogant, and a world changer. A difference maker. One who shapes the minds of our youth. You’re a hero to our doomed society,” he said. I felt my cheeks redden as I processed the way he just described my job. I don’t normally feel appreciated at work, not even at home. It felt good to have someone remind me of my purpose.
“Sometimes I feel like I’m just a glorified babysitter,” I said with a nervous laugh.
“You should never feel that way. I think you have one of the most important jobs in the world. I’m just a concert photographer,” he said with a tone that I couldn’t quite place.
“Thank you. I appreciate it,” I said, finally giving into a real smile. I watched his eyes fall to my mouth and I could feel a million butterflies in my stomach. Why does he have such an effect on me? I shook the thoughts from my head as I opened the Southwest app to see how much longer our flight had. A little over one hour to go with a stranger who makes me feel better about myself than anyone has in years. Maybe I should take a nap.
“What’s on the agenda for your bachelorette weekend? Bars and strippers?” he asked with a smile.
“Definitely the strippers. That’s a necessity,” I responded with a smirk.
“Well, when I’m not taking pictures at concerts, I happen to moonlight as an exotic dancer,” he said returning the smirk I gave.
“I’m sure you make more money taking pictures,” I said biting my lip.
“First you physically assaulted me and now you’ve verbally assaulted me,” he said.
“I’m sorry,” I said, covering my face from the embarrassment of inadvertently insulting him.
“No, you’re right. The crowd usually pays me to keep my clothes on,” he said tilting his head down in shame. Unlikely.
“What’s your stripper name?” I asked. Before he could answer, the plane suddenly dropped in altitude. I heard screams from the rows behind us. I gasped and grabbed his hand before shutting my eyes. The turbulence was over quickly as everyone seemed to breathe a sigh of relief at the same time. I slowly opened my eyes to realize everything was ok. I didn’t realize I was still holding Josh’s hand until he asked, “Are you ok?”
“Yes, sorry about that,” I said as I quickly jerked my hand back to my lap.
“No need to apologize for the hand-holding. It was nice while it lasted,” he said with a wink.
“Who was the first person to cross your mind when you felt the plane drop?” I asked him in a serious tone.
Without hesitation, he responded, “My mom.”
“Tell me about her,” I said.
“She’s the most important person on the planet,” he said looking at his hands. “She has given up so much for me and I hope I make her proud.”
“I’m sure you do,” I said while trying to swallow the lump in my throat. I’m not sure if my nerves were shot from the temporary panic or if his sentiment was getting to me.
“Who did you think of?” he asked.
“Honestly… I thought of myself,” I admitted with shame.
“Really? Elaborate on that,” he said as I could tell he was giving me his full attention.
“I’m sure I sound narcissistic, but I thought I was about to die without having lived, and then I’d leave a legacy of nothing behind,” I said with a sigh.
“I know I don’t know you. Shit, I don’t even know your name. But, I can tell that your death would most definitely leave an impact on people,” he said.
“Nothing like discussing death with a total stranger,” I said with a light laugh.
“Death doesn’t scare me. I know it’s not the end. I just enjoy my life and the love I can give to the world while I’m here in my physical form. The love I provide won’t leave when I fade away,” he said. I stared at him like I just heard one of the most philosophical phrases come from another person’s mouth in years. He’s insightful and adorable.
“I got that from a song, by the way. It’s on the playlist I downloaded to your phone. Don’t be too impressed,” he said with a laugh.
“Ah, plagiarism,” I said.
“That’s actually my stripper name,” he said with a smirk.
“Now I definitely know you aren’t making any money,” I said, trying not to laugh.
“How about I give you a glimpse of my routine and you tell me what I can do to improve my shtick to make more money?” he asked.
Stunned by his foreward remark, I immediately felt guilt running through my veins. This is the most flirting I’ve had since high school. I’m not used to this sort of attention. I looked down at my hands in my lap.
“I’m sorry if that was too much. I–” Josh began to say.
“No, no it’s ok. I was just worried I wouldn’t have enough money in my purse to get you to keep your clothes on once you started,” I said stifling a giggle.
“Alright just kick a man while he’s down,” he said as he clutched his hands over his heart. He threw his head back acting like he was wounded and I eyed his neck. His adam’s apple protruded, making me feel weak.
“I wonder if there is a doctor on board to help you,” I said sarcastically looking around the plane.
Suddenly he rose out of his seat and shouted, “Is there a doctor in the house?”
Completely stunned, I stared at him with wide eyes. I cannot believe he just did that. I watched a flight attendant quickly make his way over to our row. Oh my God.
“Sir, are you having a medical emergency?” the flight attendant asked him. Next to the attendant stood Josh’s assistant, the angry man who changed his seat earlier.
“No, no, I am ok now. Sorry for the alarm,” he said, trying not to laugh. His assistant rolled his eyes and quickly returned back to his middle seat. I’m sure he is used to Josh’s antics by now. The flight attendant gave a displeased look to both of us before walking away. I felt like I had just received punishment for a crime I didn’t do. Guilty by association.
“That was so not funny!” I exclaimed with a sigh.
“I can’t help myself sometimes,” he said with a smile. This dude is nuts.
“You’re a lunatic,” I said, getting my headphones back out.
“No, wait. I am sorry,” he said. “I’ll move back over to the window seat and leave you alone,” he said with a sense of shame in his voice. I put my headphones in as I watched him change seats then position his body to where he was looking out the window. I was no longer in his line of vision. I opened my Spotify app and his Greta Van Fleet playlist was there. I hesitated. I wanted to listen to another song but I also wanted to block this guy from my mind and listen to my own music. Against my better judgment, I selected “Light My Love” from the playlist. I closed my eyes and listened to one of the most beautiful songs I had ever heard.
Chapter Three
I was six songs deep into this playlist when I felt someone tap on my arm. I reluctantly opened my eyes for I was enjoying being in a complete and utter trance of this band. Josh looked sheepish as I removed my headphones.
“Do you care to let me out to use the bathroom? I really need to stretch my legs,” he said. Without responding, I shifted my body and moved my legs into the aisle to give him a clear walkway. He shuffled past me and I got a whiff of his cologne again. He smells so damn good. Maybe I’m being irrational for giving him the silent treatment. I’m 26-years-old but I’m acting like I’m 12. I decided to act more civil once he returned to our row. I don’t want to look too anxious, but I couldn’t help but watch the bathroom door awaiting his return. After what felt like an eternity, I decided to do something irrational. I can be crazy too. I took my headphones off and left them in the seat as I shoved my phone in my jeans pocket. I stood up and started to make my way to the bathroom to check on him. As I got closer to the door, it opened and he exited. I wanted to retreat back to my seat from pure embarrassment, but there was nowhere to turn. He looked up at me and scrunched his eyebrows together like he was confused. As he should be. I decided to try to play it off that I needed to use the restroom rather than run back to my seat like I desperately wanted to. As he moved past me, his body brushed against mine and I felt every nerve from my toes to my scalp tingle. I felt like I could no longer breathe. I made my way into the tiny bathroom and stared at myself in the mirror. “Get it together,” I said aloud to my reflection. I took a few deep breaths and made my way back to my seat. I made the mistake of looking at him because his deep brown eyes were once again locked on mine. A shiver immediately ran through me. I sat back down in my aisle seat and tried to think of something to ease the awkward tension.
“What has been your favorite song off the playlist?” he asked, breaking the silence.
“That’s difficult to say. I have genuinely loved all of the ones I’ve listened to so far,” I said with a smile. His cheeks almost looked like they were a new shade of pink. Was he blushing? I quickly added, “Thank you for sharing this band with me.”
“Thank you for listening,” he said back with a smile. I bit my lip as I felt like the awkward tension was over. However, a new tension was forming.
I checked the Southwest app and realized we were set to land very soon. I put my headphones back in my purse as a sign that I was ready to talk to him. He picked up on my cue because he quickly switched seats again. His cologne hit me and if I hadn’t been sitting, I may have collapsed. He buckled his seat belt just before the overhead light signaled us to do so.
“What’s the first thing you and your friends are doing tonight?” he asked.
“Actually, I am flying in a day earlier than everyone, so I have the Airbnb alone until everyone flies in tomorrow,” I said. I suddenly realized that I shouldn’t have told a stranger that I was going to be staying alone in an unfamiliar city, but the words had already left my lips. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
“Really?” he said as he sat up straight in his seat. I nodded but then looked away. I can’t believe I just overshared this information with him.
“If you’d like some company…” he said quietly. I quickly turned my head back to him. I was dreading another night by myself, especially without Sassy. Riley said I could FaceTime her tonight, but I didn’t want to bother her while she finished packing and getting her stuff together. I was going to use the time to decorate the place before her arrival anyways.
I stammered, “Josh, I–”
“How about dinner? I can take you to some of my favorite places in town. What do you like to eat?” he asked with a big smile. The idea of not being alone was tempting and as frustrating as he had been at times, I really did enjoy his company.
Before I could give him an answer, I felt our plane touch the ground as we braced for a complete stop. This was always my least favorite part about flying.
“I really need to decorate the Airbnb and unpack. I’d like to get settled in rather than go out. Plus, I don’t have a vehicle,” I finally responded as the sounds of seat belts unbuckled around us.
“If it’s not too forward, I could always come over and cook for you. I can bring some groceries and wine, or whatever else you’d like to drink. I can even help you decorate. You can’t spend your first night in Nashville alone,” he said.
I mulled over his offer as people around us began to stand up and form a line in the center aisle as they collected their luggage from the overhead compartments. Josh appeared not to be in any hurry to leave, nor was I.
“Fine. But I want to text your full name, picture, vehicle description, and phone number to Riley in case I go missing,” I said with a matter-of-fact tone.
He laughed nervously and then said, “Give me your phone.” I put in my passcode and handed it to him. He stared at my background, a picture of Sassy and me, before opening the contacts app. “I’m giving you my number so you can text me your address when you’re ready for me to come over to cook you dinner,” he said as he was typing. I watched the plane empty row by row until it felt like we were the last two remaining on board. I noticed his assistant standing in the aisle waiting on Josh. “I think you’re going to get an earful when you get off the plane,” I said, eyeing the angry-looking man.
“I usually do,” he said with a smile as he passed my phone back to me. I glanced down at the contact name that read Plagiarism with the winky face emoji. I covered my mouth as I laughed loudly.
“Ahem,” we both heard his assistant clear his throat as he began tapping his foot impatiently.
“Ok, I think it’s time to go,” I said as I grabbed my purse and stepped into the aisle to let him out. While Josh exited his seat, he stood so close that I could smell his delicious scent again. I watched him open the compartment and get our luggage out. He lifted the handle of my suitcase and handed it to me. I smiled at his kindness, avoiding eye contact, because I had about all that I could stand.
We made our way down the center aisle following his assistant off of the plane. Before he stepped inside the airport, I watched as he put his sunglasses back on. Weird.
“I’ll be anxiously waiting for your text,” he said to me as he pulled his hat down a little further over his face. Before he walked away, he said, “I’ll send you all of the info you need for Riley when I hear from you,” with a wink.
I made my way down to ground transportation and requested an Uber to take me to the Airbnb. I sent Kenneth a text to let him know that I had landed, but I texted Riley that I was going to call her ASAP. I needed her advice now more than ever. I knew I was treading in dangerous waters by allowing that adorable, frustrating, sexy, funny, crazy stranger to come over, but something made me want to be around him. I may be in too deep, but I’ve always been a strong swimmer.

I'd like to hear about the inaba au
Right right sorry it took me so long I was a bit sick today
Anyways- yes! Since I'm finally actually playing P4G I've built up a little more to the au! Aka. Given it some actual P4 flair
This is to say, I have the order of them being on the TV. Joker starts out with his besties, Ryuji and Ann, they're the starting trio. Ryuji's shadow is like a little kid, crying and sniffling cause he just wants people to like him,,
He's the track star, and he's been taught that it's a one persona sport. That he doesn't have to worry about his teammates, but they've come to resent him a bit for being the golden boy, and. Especially after he got arrested at the end of the last season and cost them greatly. He had been sent to get a "delivery" for his bastard dad. Turns out it was drugs, and he was accused of doping and all
He wanted to start this year fresh, but they all still hate him. He's cleared to compete since his tests never showed any signs of drugs, but. Y'know.
And then there's Ann! Her shadow, it's about how she sees herself as two faced. She hears what her classmates say. She's visibly an outsider, the rich bitch from the city. All she cares about is herself. So, she let's them believe that. But,
She's been in Inaba since elementary school! She's so sick of being the outsider when she's been there the whole time! She was there when that one kid pissed himself at graduation. She was there when their teacher threw up during an assembly. How come they still don't see her as one of them? She just, wants to belong,
Plus she's super gay for Shiho. But that's a given
So once they've got that covered, they're teaming up with the weird Horny Cat in the TV to hunt for the missing third year student. "Burger Girl", Haru Okumura. The last two to go missing died, and. They're determined to save her
Haru's little TV set is themed like a fancy restaurant. She's also from the city, her parents used to own a 5 star elite restaurant. Then, her mother died, and her dad moved them back to her mother's hometown, opening up a food truck where he experimented on American style food. Burgers, mostly
Haru sees her dad stressing over the bills sometimes. Or, crying at the little shrine they have in their small home for her mother. Haru, sees a lot of it as her own fault. Talk on the town is she's going to take over Big Bang, but. She, doesn't want to. She feels trapped in this confusing legacy.
Her shadow has this big fake smile, in half of a formal waiter outfit, the other half the cutesy Burger Girl outfit she wears daily. Her shadow is loud about what she wants. Haru meekly argues back from the floor, tears in her eyes, as her shadow screams about wanting to be free from that dumb title. "Burger Girl."
Then, Haru, she just shouts. "YOU'RE NOT ME!" It's silent. The others watch in fear as her shadow transforms, the tears finally flowing down Haru's face
They rescue Haru, and her dad crushes her in a hug when she returns. In this, all he cares for is his daughter. She joins the group, and agrees to help them find who pushed her in
Next up would be Yusuke. TV victim 2.
He and his mother live in town, where she runs an art shop that is frequently filled with children attending lessons. His mother was left disabled after her former teacher attacked her to claim her art for his own, and to protect her son from a similar fate, she now refuses to produce art herself
Yusuke. Really cares for his mom. She's given so much, and he feels he has to be good, better, to repay her for all she's given him. He's a tortured artist. He barely knows who he is, but he expects himself to be great
His little TV set is, abstract. Colours everywhere, as if Yusuke himself flung the paint around in anger. It's a sensory nightmare, and when they reach the end, it's to a blank room
Yusuke kneels there in the centre, chained to the ground by chains of clay and paint. His shadow, dressed in a torn but colorful smock, scowls down at him, paint palette in hand. Hurling insults and colour at Yusuke, about how he's a fraud, he's not meant to be an artist, he's a disappointment and a disgrace
Yusuke is silent the whole time. When he looks up and sees his classmates and the third year in the room, he's filled with. Horror almost. "This, it isn't me, I swear-"
"DONT LISTEN TO THE LITTLE FRAUD, HE'S NOTHING! HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THE WORLD, OR THE TRUE PAIN OF AN ARTIST!"
"stop it, please,"
"HA! IF MOM ONLY KNEW WHAT A SHELL OF A MAN SHE WAS RAISING... MAYBE SHE WOULDVE BEEN BETTER OFF GIVING US UP TO THAT MADARAME AFTER ALL!"
"YOU'RE NOT ME, SHUT UP!"
And queue the fight, the room slowly filling with colour as they fight and such. And they drag Yusuke back home, where his mom sobs as she holds her son, she was. So terrified while he was missing,
Oh also, he has pet lobsters. They're named after famous female artists, and he insists the lobsters are soulmates. The true lesbian icons of Inaba.
Anyways next up? Their Navi! Futaba!
This one. Is my favourite idea. So, y'know how Rise is an Idol? Futaba is. Behind one of the most famous vocaloids ever. She develops the vast majority of her songs, rigs, and is responsible for keeping this Internet sensation up with the times. She even poses as this idol for interviews and such
...she's Hatsune Miku.
"wah wah but Scream she should be Alibaba because-" NO. ITS MY AU I GET TO CHOOSE THE SILLY
Anyways. Ryuji is a huge Miku fan and is excited to see the face behind his favourite idol and. He sees Futaba and. Just stares. "Dude. Hatsune Miku is a Weeb."
Futaba is, an orphan. She was living with a programmer for a while but, he got caught up in some. Allegations. And it was no longer safe for her to be around him. So, she was sent to Inaba where someone who worked with her mom owns a little coffee shop
(psst. That's Sojiro)
He doesn't have room for her and she. Is a shell of a person. Didn't go outside for years, doesn't know how to be a proper person, and. Fears no one would like her for her,
So her TV set? It's. Like diving into a computer. Wires and coding along the walls, electronica music. The further in they go, the clearer it becomes that the voice they hear singing isn't Miku, it's. Futaba. First floor sounds like Miku, last floor would just be Futaba
And her final room is a hate shrine. Torn posters of Miku, statues with the heads missing, even a computer with a bat through the screen. Shadow Futaba seethes about how she hates Miku, how she's taken everything from her, that. She'd be better off if she'd never created her. No one loves Futaba, they only love Miku.
She goes as far as to shout that, the world would be better off with just Miku, and that Futaba should just. End it. Futaba is shaking, and mumbles about how, no, no, that's not it,, that's not her-
When things simmer down, she ends up living with the Niijima's like Joker. She spends a lot of time at Sojiro's, learning about her mom, but really, he wasn't prepared for a kid at the time and. She wasn't ready for that either.
And then they'd have to do Morgana's, and. I'm glossing over that we can probably all guess how it would go
So the final TV set they have to venture into, is Makoto's. She's last. Her issues have been boiling over on the side the whole time, watching her "cousin" quickly becoming friends with people she's grown up with, and. Being left on the side once again
Her set is like an empty school. Papers on the floors, flights flickering, spray paint on the windows. But, they catch Makoto's shadow doing the spray painting somewhere inside, and it makes the team kinda. Question if, they really know her
Her shadow is like. In a science teacher getup, but. Way more punk. Black torn labcoat, wild hair, and. In her final room, faceless women dressed in very sexy getups all over her behind her desk. She openly flirts with the girls on the team too, leaving poor Makoto on the ground horrified
"no, no I'm a feminist- I'd never-"
"Ha! At night, we lie awake and Crave, we wanna pin em down and fu-"
"NO! THIS ISNT ME-"
Shadow Makoto is about how. She hates being the rule follower. She's always wanted nothing more than to break free and experience, life. Also, feeling bad about being gay. Shes got some internalized homophobia
They beat her up and take her home, and. Yeah
OKAY THIS WAS LONG WINDED BUT. INABA AU.

My latest thoughts on the final episode of BUCCHIGIRI?!
WARNING: *May contain spoilers for the finale*
- The opening flashes back to how Arajin and Matakara first met each other: Apparently while at elementary school, Arajin happened to overhear two boys spreading rumors about Matakara back then. However, Arajin was different in that he is curious about Matakara’s visit to the Honki Temple so he followed him and watched him train.
- When Matakara was about to be hit by a log that he pulled up, Arajin cried out. Of course, Matakara thankfully turned out fine but was scraped. Arajin was fascinated by Matakara’s dedication to being a Honki Person and offered to train him. And that’s where the friendship started.
- Cutting back to the present, Senya tried to warn Arajin about how merging with him will kill him but Arajin doesn’t care as his only goal is one thing: Save Matakara from his demise.
- No OP playing but it’s expected since it’s the final episode but Arajin’s mum is just plain funny as usual since after watching her drama, she tried to check up on her son but since he’s gone, she assumes he is sleeping over at a friend’s house lmao.
- Back in the Siguma base, Jabashiri, Hagure and Outa are hiding out and when Hagure wondered where Arajin is, Jabashiri angrily dismisses him to be useless (not wrong since you know…) but the moment Outa heard about Arajin, he seeks out for him to get some answers while Jabashiri and Hagure tags along (it’s sad that they never capitalize on their friendship)
- Meanwhile back in the Minato Kai base, Zabu and Komao are there. Zabu sustained heavy injuries (THANK YOU MAPPA & UTSUMI FOR NOT KILLING THE LIL GUY OFF) and it’s pretty funny to see Komao trying to wrap him out. But on the other hand, it’s nice to see them worry about Matakara even after the latter denounces his relationship with Minato Kai as a whole. So like with the main Siguma guys, they seek out for Matakara.
- I think it’s kind of cute that Komao is carrying Zabu lol.
- The two guys that frequent the Tomoshibi restaurant are walking back stuffed from the meal that they ate back there but the moment they saw Matakara being fused and taken over by Ichiya, they ran off.
- Should point out how the sky in this episode has a mixture of dark blue with some red in it to symbolize the oncoming battle.
- NNL segment happens again but the Teacher is sharply dressed and the receptionist is back to his chipper self. The Teacher order his usual: Jasmine. Oh and we got answers about who Jasmine is: Apparently, she’s a purple spotted cat!
- So we got the answer of what NNL is: A cat cafè!
- Outa, Jabashiri and Hagure are still seeking out for Arajin so they approached the family restaurant. They asked Mrs Tomoshibi about Arajin’s whereabouts but Mrs Tomoshibi doesn’t know where he is and before the Siguma boys could leave, Mrs Tomoshibi go into some dramatic waxing about love and whatnot which left the guys dumbfounded lol.
- With Mahoro and Marito, Mahoro offered a Maji Kebab to have the latter wake up but he doesn’t respond. Upset, she decided to step out for a bit but overheard two ‘nurses’ mentioning a gorilla paitent which struck an idea to Mahoro.
- And so, Mahoro (disguised as a nurse) and two other nurses (who turned out to be the two Siguma grunts) decided to kidnap Kenichrio from his ward lol and by mentioning his name, Marito woke up much to the cheers of the Siguma grunts and Mahoro. (Thank goodness that Marito woke up!)
- Back to Arajin and Matakara, Matakara (now fused with Ichiya) decided to seek out Arajin who now has reinstated Senya for the final battle. Arajin now has a new invocation: To save Matakara. This of course had Senya take over Arajin’s body and now the final battle commences.
- Once Ichiya beats Senya in the first round, he revealed why he resented Senya: Not only did Ichiya caught some deadly disease and was about to die but he also was jealous of Senya as a result. Granted, while it doesn’t excuse him manipulating Matakara, I guess there’s a motive now I guess.
- Arajin’s mind being send back along with Matakara’s psyche being shown, it doesn’t look too out of place in a AITSF game.
- Actually, can I talk about Matakara’s psyche for a minute? I truly find it saddening how it’s his room in the bathhouse he’s staying but the picture of his brother and him are broken along with the treasured friendship stone. Really hammers home just how mentally unstable Matakara is before he lets the darkness consumes him.
- During the ensuing fight of Ichiya and Senya, Zabu and Komao are still looking for Matakara but the moment they saw two flashing lights from somewhere, the my crossed over to the bridge/roadside to reach the place where the light came from. Oh and Akutaro is there too but he hidden himself in plain sight as a traffic police lmao.
- Same for Outa, Jabashiri and Hagure. They’re seeking out for Arajin until they saw the battle. Hotheaded as usual, Jabashiri tried to jump in but Hagure stopped him. (Actually, it’s quite funny how Hagure followed Mrs Tomoshibi’s advice lmao)
- Both djinns managed to end their feud with Senya delivering the final blow, Ichiya is now satisfied now their feud is settled but just when they’re about to make up, the darkness somehow covered up Ichiya and that’s where Matakara came back, but he now has a completely different aura to him.
- Shocked, Arajin asked Senya what happened and Senya gave him the answer: Matakara has fused with Ichiya for more power! (Is that even possible at all?)
- No matter, with this fused power, Matakara curbstomped Arajin all the while declaring how he doesn’t need Mitsukuni, his friends or Arajin for power. (It’s super sad how Matakara said all this because it meant at this point, he now cares about attaining power at this point)
- Also another thing to note is that he doesn’t call Arajin ‘Ara-chan’ but simply ‘Arajin’ in a cold and emotionless tone.
- During the beatdown, Arajin has a sudden realization regarding how after the incident, he was blind to Matakara’s suffering of loneliness and the Matakara standing in front of him is a result of his foolishness. (Uh oh, looks like that crowd wouldn’t like that)
- When Arajin blacked out, he flashes to the various people that he know and met (thankfully not the NG Boys lol) but the one moment that saddens me is how when it flashes to Matakara, he tried to reach out for him but the latter turned away.
- But however, the ‘bubble’ turned into a love heart with a mini Mahoro on it, and that’s when Arajin yelled out his old invocation and showcases he is not about to give up!
- Arajin blocked Matakara’s kicks and now go the upper hand and when he landed a pretty powerful punch, Arajin metaphorically pulled out a smol Matakara from the darkness he’s suffering and now bathe in warm light.
- Oh and before that, we see Senya and Arajin interacting one last time before the former and Ichiya ascended to the higher plane now that they’re at peace.
- The fight is finally over and Matakara is back to normal. Honki Temple is destroyed on the other hand tho.
- Arajin walked over to Matakara with the friendship stone in hand, scrapped off the blood on his face and used it to create a stamp. He stamped the friendship stone on Matakara’s hand with both their names imbued on it. Matakara was touched by this gesture and it seems like they made up.
- Oh and it looks like Zabu, Komao, Outa, Jabashiri and Hagure found the main guys and that’s where it ends.
- Credit rolls and now we get a bunch of montages: Receptionist posts missing cat posters of Jasmine, Matakara apologizing to each and every gang members that he attacked, Matakara being brought back into Minato Kai with no hard feelings form the gang itself, Matakara being happy and bear hugging Zabu and Komao, Siguma Squad somewhat forgiving Matakara and the latter being weirded out.
- Akutaro being brought back into NG Boys on his own free will, and dancing with the NG Gurls, Arajin still chasing after Mahoro but the latter ignores him as usual (dude come on), Jasmine leaving the Teacher lmao and now wandering around, Receptionist presenting the teacher with a new cat: Oolong, the whole entire Siguma Squad visiting the Tomoshibi family restaurant along with Minato Kai, everyone is invited apparently!
- Marito playfully entertaining Mrs Tomoshibi is just so funny lmao and Mahoro literally had a muderous look on her face and took out her frustrations on the Siguma grunts. (looks like the Tomoshibi family are on her hitlist apparently lol) Poor Outa knew what’s gonna happen and he covered his ears lol.
- On the other hand, we now see Arajin and Matakara going back to the way they used to be in their childhood and Matakara finally made a perfect gyoza.
- After credits roll, and now we have a repeat of the first episode starting scene but now Arajin is trying to woo Mahoro by copying Marito lol (unaware that he would’ve been murdered by Mahoro for doing this)
- Arajin staring at the sky and wondering where Senya is before he is slapped on the back, and thinking it’s Senya, Arajin turned around to see Komao and Zabu.
- Also, when he touched his forehead, the metal bullet in him is gone and there’s also no scar on him surprisingly of Senya’s bullet wound. (Then again, it’s magic after all lol)
- Matakara made a visit to the hospital and it turns out that… MITSUKUNI IS ALIVE! (His fingers did move after all and Matakara’s reaction is a sign of it)
- Arajin went back to the now destroyed temple and picked up the bullet that held Senya and just before he threw it into the ocean, the bullet ricocheted off several trash and debris lying around before it hits Arajin. Annoyed, Arajin mentioned Senya once again and that’s before Senya emerged from the bullet once again!
- Ok so overall thoughts about this episode: It’s a pretty short but chilling episode that wraps everything up. It’s nice to see Outa, Jabashiri and Hagure trying to seek Arajin but I didn’t feel a lot about them compared to Zabu and Komao who are geninuely worried about Matakara, speaking of Matakara, I really liked how his inner darkness affected him not to mention being shown his psyche. The answer to the NNL Segment is revealed and I’m happy how people’s theory about it being a cat cafè turned out to be true. The post canon needs a bit of fixing tho IMO: I do wish Arajin would give up on Mahoro but on the other hand, he and Matakara are now back to the way they used to be, Mahoro to at least move on with her in*est behaviour towards Marito, and that NG Boys shouldn’t get back together and reinstate Akutaro back esp since he abused them. Still, I like the series ending and I’m hoping to see a S2 or an OVA soon.
Although, it would be best if I wrote my cumulative review on a separate post.

Thinking about Hotch and how my brain has chosen to smoosh him to fit what I want from his character
Thinking abt how Hotch grew up in a horribly violent home that he did everything in his power to protect his little brother from because Hotch is so incredibly on the side of ‘no one deserves to feel this’ as opposed to ‘I want others to feel how I feel’
Autistic Hotch who hid everything in him as best he could because his home did not treat his differences and needs kindly, who was still considered ‘not quite right’ by those who interacted with him but wouldn’t be diagnosed and able to understand the disconnect he experienced with most people until he was almost 40
Hotch who was always a little lanky and resented how he only really gained weight and muscle well after his father died because he’d been counting down the days until he could fight back from the time he was like 13 but never had the physical strength to
Hotch not knowing how to deal with the myriad of ways this home has effected him and picking up smoking and drinking as a way to make everything feel less
Hotch meeting Haley and knowing he wanted to feel everything if it meant truly experiencing the way she made him feel
Hotch who hated his father and couldn’t understand why he was so devastated by his death. He has two main theories, and the answer is likely a combination of both and some things he hasn’t thought of. 1, that there was a million things he wanted to do and say to him to get some kind of closure after the torture he endured and never got the chance, and 2, that’s one of the biggest changes he’s ever experienced, and he sometimes just needs time to adjust
Hotch smoking on and off since meeting Haley, but after hearing Haley suggest they have kids some day, completely stopping because he would never want to leave Haley and a son behind because he got lung cancer like his father did
Hotchley who love each other to the ends of the Earth and tell each other everything and do their best to show the other the insane amount of love and trust they have for each other
Hotchley who are inseparable and take care of each other and are sweet to each other and always know how to make the other feel safe
Hotch who is completely terrified to have kids because he doesn’t feel like he is good enough to be trusted with a human life but also can’t think of any other life he would rather have with Haley than loving her and raising a kid together
Hotch who grew to have the body type of a brick wall, over six foot and all broad shoulders and stockiness, and is terrified of hurting people and always treats himself as dangerous when he’s in distress because on one or two occasions, his unintended strength has proven to more than anyone expects from Hotch, the gentle giant
Hotch who was nervous about holding Jack because he was so worried he was going to hurt him somehow
Hotch who has autism and obsessive compulsive tendencies and can be debilitatingly paranoid and has only slept well a handful of nights throughout his entire life and thinks he’s a failure at anything other than working and takes years to get therapy for any of this and is so fucking tired and the list goes on
Hotch who learns to take care of Jack after Haley’s death and thinks he’s doing everything wrong but is actually an amazing father
Hotch who finally gets help for how horrible his mental health is and realizes for the first time that there are ways of living that don’t involve him being miserable most of the time
Hotch after Witsec who drives a blue pickup truck to his job as a high school teacher every day and who can’t wait to have Jack in class because his favorite thing is spending time with his son
Hotch who still feels the need to help people, and can find that in teaching kids and looking out for them
Hotch figures out a lifestyle that works for him and a set of medications to help him manage everything better. He develops a special interest in escape rooms to fill his need for problems to solve, and he’s truly content for one of the first times in his life
I’m going to stop at these, but I could literally go on all day

ok RIP i am very late but without further ado let's get it, i'm ines and this is kim noeul who tbh was a poor, easily forgettable girl in hs and now is one of the preeminent young novelists in south korea! under the cut here i'll get into a little more but pls like this and i'll def hit u up for plotting!
ok so first of all: pisces sun/taurus moon/aquarius rising
now onto like bg stuff so she's born to two teenaged parents right
and what's wild is her parents genuinely really love each other and like get married and noeul has a little sister who's like 9 now which is crazy
also bc a 16 year old girl named her like her actual name is noelle not noeul but like she's let everyone just assume it's noeul bc it's easier than explaning that her mom thought noelle would be a trendy name
but anyways having two teenaged parents doesn't like set you up the best financially so she lived with her parents and grandparents for a while when she was growing up and evenutally her parents moved out of her paternal grandparents place only to be living in a shitty half basement apartment with noeul bc like again how far can two high school grads from poor families with a whole ass child get in seoul
and tbh like bro noeul loves her parents but she DEF kinda resented them for being poor growing up and like so combined with this hatred of her situation paired with being a smart girl with a lot of drive she worked REALLY hard to get into shinhwa
only kinda realized that getting into shinhwa didn't mean a ton in terms of social standing bc u know she's still fucking broke and tbh rather than bullied i don't imagine people particularly even took that much notice of her bc she kept to herself a lot with like insecurity bc she was v obviously poorer than everyone and stuff and probs had a few friends but not a lot
tho lmao wildly and fully relating to her secret despite being this smart girl who worked hard to get her scholarship and school was v important to her she got pregnant right at the tale end of her last year at shinhwa and actually had to delay going to college the following year bc u know PREGNANCY
and there's like a lot of stigma that comes with being a single mother in korea and shit so like tbh did she want to keep her daughter? yes of course but like she didn't have the financials bc atp it's her, her parents, and her little sister living in a shitty little apartment and she literally shares a room with a 3 year old at the time, and then like she wants to go and better her life and stuff and it's hard to do when everyone judges you for being a single mom and it's not fair on the child so she makes the hard choice to give up her daughter for adoption and then go back to school
and like ok she goes to ewha womans and she does well there too bc again very determined to do well in life and all but like i think giving her daughter up fr had a sense of guilt, regret, and honestly depression that she never really expected so like she struggled with that and she ended up writing this story about it for a creative writing class and her teacher was like "hold up this is kind of good have u ever considered writing it into something more?"
and with her teacher's help and encouragement she did just that and ended up writing what would become a very popular novel about a young woman who gets pregnant, gives up her child, and navigating life through the tragedy over it. tbh it's kinda in the style of kim jiyoung, born 1982
and even cooler u know later it gets turned into a movie that's scheduled to come out later this year and fr like idk shit turned her whole life around like writing about the biggest misery and regret of her life gave her the money she always craved and a bit of notoriety and everything is cool and all but like on the other side of things people fr think the story is just a novel and are like "wow how did you come up with the concept?" and for obvi reasons like noeul is def more comfortable with letting them thinking it's all fictional
and yeah so ngl life has fr turned around really recently for her and it's really nice but like rip now the dawn of realization is setting in that like... people are gonna expect another novel and how is she supposed to provide that like...

I just need some little hcs of Liu and Jeff as kids, if you have time. I see so many imagines of them as adults, and don't get me wrong,I love reading those as well, but I'd just like to know what they were like as kids before all that shit happened. Besides some of my personal hcs, I'd love to know some of yours as well. You are my favorite writer <3 Take care of yourself!
Here's a childhood memory fic and Jeff sleep talking in a shared room with Liu
I'm very honored to be your favorite writer!! <3
Jeff & Liu: The early years
Jeff and Liu's parents were away often on their business trips, one could also go as far as calling it neglect.
They were dropped off at their Aunt's house, and their grandparents, and their parent's friends, forever hopping houses every three or so weeks.
Not once did Jeff see their parents show any kind of affection toward each other, it was like they were in business partnership with the exception of making breakfast and dinner whenever they were home.
So Jeff and Liu were completely dependent on each other for affection, learning basic things, doing homework, and cleaning the house. Y'know things that parents should be doing.
They often cuddled up under blankets together with a movie during the night, and reminded each other their bed times, and after getting in bed getting in a heated discussion about their new favorite superhero vs a shark-bear.
They were very close growing up, but as the trauma set in from neglect and resentment toward their parents, they grew apart when their teenage years started.
But before then, they knew how to make their own fun.
Hitting tree's with sticks acting as swords, splashing in streams, accidentally causing trouble at a nearby gas station. No one really cared what they did except their Auntie Jermma who was very strict with them whenever she pried her eyes away from her cigarette box.
Some little adventures included befriending a dog and trying to feed it cheetos, learning how to make pizza at ages 6 and 7, breaking a vase and gluing it back together and their parents never found out.
But one time, they were out in the backwoods, so deep that the daylight turned to dusk with the amount of tree's overbearing them.
Liu said he saw something weird in between the trees, and Jeff said to go investigate.
Truth is, Jeff was scared it was a bear and didn't want to get any closer. Liu was too, matter of fact. He side shuffled to get a better look at the creature, and screamed bloody murder when he did get a glimpse at the demon.
Liu turned, tripped, and broke his ankle on a sneaky root behind him.
But when Jeff looked, there was nothing there, and Liu was a blabbering mess between recounting the terrifying creature he saw and the pain from his broken ankle.
Jeff tried his best to console him, but ended up giving him a piggy back home while he sobbed the whole way there.
Liu knows what he saw to this day, and he knows why Jeff didn't see it, too. Fate was set out from when they were just a young age, and it wasn't fair to have their destiny's played like puppets.
Jeff helped Liu the whole time his ankle was healing, mostly out of the good of his heart, and also because his parent's weren't around to want to take care of their injured child.
Once they were old enough, they were allowed to live alone while Mr. and Mrs. Woods left for trips. They cooked, cleaned, and turned on the porch light every night on their own.
And nights were lonely, and Jeff often climbed into Liu's bed crying, wondering why all of his friends at school had parent's at parent teacher conferences, and recitals, and field trips.
It was a burning jealously that made him weep.

i was thinking of a jjk nocurses!au but i wanted to include sukuna as itadori's twin or sibling but I'm still not sure what kind of relationship he would have with other characters. the relationship with itadori would be pretty much the same as my sister and I given the fact that she's ssoooo cheerful all the time and she hates me for being so pessimistic so I kinda figure that would be their relationship regarding siblings. I wanted to add choso as their adopting older brother and he would pretty much be the same just instead of carrying with the stress of being a curse he would be sad of dropping high school and not going to college, so he would find a job or something to take care of his younger brothers. he would be dating yuki tho. he's a little bit insane, tho, traumatized with his other two brother's death and all. he's overprotective of itadori and sukuna.
with the school wouldn't be so different. they exchanged schools after sukuna got so angry he sent a couple of dudes to the hospital, in their class would be megumi and nobara, obviously, and I wanted to add mahito but figured he could be one or two years up, so junpei would be with them. sukuna would be alone most of the times because he cant get any friends at all and he's jealous of itadori making friends so easily.
i TRULY wanted to have geto be the itadori's foster father but that would just messed up the relationships so much, so he'll be a single dad with two daughters. gojo and geto are together but not in a healthy relationship let me tell you.
like i said the school would be almost the same, gojo is the first year's teacher, the second years are yuta, toge, panda, maki, and (couse there are no courses I wanted to add them as persons as well) mahito, their teacher would be kusakabe, and the third years would be hakari, kirara, hajime, jogo and hanami (I don't know where to put dagon) their teacher would be the principal
rika did died in an accident but far older, so its more resent and yuta is a little bit insane for it, tho itadori understands it somehow because of his grandpa and they become friends. todo is the always besto friendo but they met in an exchange of the two schools like in the canon but very differently. when he finds out his master is dating itadori's brother he cant decide to curse him or to hug him. he's definitely getting jealous every time itadori calls sukuna his brother, (or any of his brothers in general, but he sees sukuna daily so.) maki and him are great friends because of the martial arts, and she somewhat gets along with sukuna, when he's not being an asshole. panda is clingy with anyone in general and everyone is surprise when he is also with sukuna. he always pushes him away but panda insists and now sukuna doesn't care anymore. megumi and sukuna fight A LOT, and kugisaki bullies sukuna. the only reason sukuna doesn't bully her back is because of itadori, no one knows it but he's a menace.
toge likes yuta but his dating maki whoop.
mahito is wierdly obsessed with junpei and stalks him but sukuna seeing he's friends with itadori scares him away
hanami and jogo are best friends and took the job to be dagon's parents XD
for obvious reasons shoko is the nurse and she sees the first years almost daily, ijichi and nitta are also teachers but for specific subjects, they teach to every class and they're tired
megumi lives with toji and tsumiki and im planning to make his mother die in the story timeline, idk I want pain. toji teaches ONE TIME a special self defense in the school for everyone and now every time gojo and he see each other they fight and get all beefy and megumi is so embarrassed he wants to die and he starts going home alone so he cant hear them.
the third years are so split up you never see them together. jogo and hanami are always together but never with the others, the same with hakari and kirara. no one knows where the heck is hajime most of the time. the third years don't like each other and they say so publicly but then they're playing basketball against the second years and they play as if they've played a thousand times together and win and everyone is so shocked because they looked even bored of being there. they are just bored of life and wants to get out of school (I should know, next year is my last and I'm already exhausted). one time happened that they were on a school trip the five of them and the principal and some wierdo called out to kirara and every one else was just so ready to beat the hell out of the guy. the principal put them in line tho so there was no beating. they have each other's back even tho they hate each other, and sukuna admires every one of them even when he thinks he still can beat everyone.
one time jogo challenged sukuna into a fight cause he heard how he got expelled from his other school, but got confused and fought with itadori. he got beat up anyway but now he thinks sukuna is a caring bastard who cant shut up about wanting to go home and cook his older brother a healing soup or something. from time to time he would see itadori all friendly and smily and then insults sukuna about it and he's just confused because from where the heck does this idiot get mixed information?
hajime is friends with toge, dont ask me how that came out but they just are. they also share little secrets and common dispairs no one else knows (if you know what I mean *winkwink*)
in the other school we have the principal yoshinobu who teaches the first students arata and uraume (yes I add him so what) poor them, the second years would be miwa, mai, and kokichi (there are no curses so mechamaru doesn't exist, tho they still call him mechamaru but its for other reason we'll see later) utahime is their teacher, and the third years, noritoshi, todo and momo, their teacher is mei mei who teaches them very cuestionable subjects, they just roll with it. everyone is a little bit scared of uraume, for different things each.
after the exchange meeting uraume became obsessed with sukuna and follows him around everywhere out of scholar hours, and its making him uncomfortable at this point, because its not the same as panda its more like stalking and its freaking him out. itadori makes the same thing as sukuna did with mahito, but uraume is now terrified of him to the point of getting a little bit scare when sukuna talks to him thanks to the similarities.
momo miwa and mai invited arata to an all girls night once because they thought he would like it. and he did. he's never admitting it in front of his sister tho.
against all beliefs, noritoshi, megumi and toge are great friends, tho noritoshi not always understands their conversations. they like to go study together and maybe drink coffee like old ladies do. sukuna once saw this when shopping for the week and its making fun of them with kugisaki. that's the only time kugisaki and sukuna have been nice to each other too
everyone is rooting kokichi into cofessing to miwa. kokishi is dying inside because he thought he wasn't being so obvious. miwa knows this but she also knows kokishi wants to be the first one to take action so she lets it be. and Is also funny seeing him in distress so.
todo and mai go shopping together. sometimes they invite noritoshi just so they can change his wardrobe of three shirts and two pants. they sometimes meet with kugisaki and panda and other times with hakari and kirara. todo and hakari fights everytime and mei invites kirara for an icecream.
i dont want a lot of people dating because this would be as a sukuna pov and he would simply not get interested in that and I want him to talk to everyone at least once so that should do.
this came out longer than i thought
give me more ideas pleas.

Hannah Abbott
Hannah Abbott was a half blood witch who was sorted into Hufflepuff in 1991, in the same year the famous Harry Potter came back to the Wizarding World and was sorted alongside her but ended up in Gryffindor.
Hannah and her classmates usually had to clean whatever Harry Potter did in the school, and while they hated Dumbledore's favoritism with Harry and Gryffindor, they were glad that in their third year and their fourth year Harry was safe.
Hannah always tried to be fair, even if sometimes she was too angry or hurt to be good with the people who were mean to her friends, but she always defended them.
Her best friends were Susan Bones and Ernie McMillan and they were called the Citrine trio.
She came out to them first by telling them that she was bisexual and they gladly supported her, and beside them the most supportive person she met was her mom, Ethel Alinac, a muggle born who had married her dad Edward Abbott.
The experience of her mom as a student made Hannah aware that people would look down on her for having muggle blood, as well as that she had to look for her value only on herself.
It was a cold morning in Herbology class in 1996, Professor Sprout was giving the instructions when Dumbledore, the headmaster, called Professor Sprout, moments later they called for her and told her what she never imagined she would have to go through.
Her mom had been murdered by Death Eaters, and they hurt her dad.
Hannah traveled home immediately and took care of her ailing father as well as she started training in order to be a better fighter and a better healer so that she could avenge her mother.
And in those times she was able to gather her strength and cast a corporal patronus: a brown bear.
She grew to be grumpy resentful after that, even with Susan Bones and Ernie McMillan but they never gave up on trying to help her and all their efforts were worth it when Neville Longbottom who had always been kind to her tried to get closer and be her friend.
Not an easy task since now she pushed away everyone, but the ever optimistic and sweet Neville kept coming back every time she tried to be away from him, and when they had to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts, Hannah was petrified by the sight of Neville under the spell of Voldemort by burning the sorting hat but got relieved and proud by seeing Neville break away and behead Nagini, Neville also got happy when he saw Hannah conjure her beloved brown bear patronus and to see she could find her light among all the darkness they were in.
When everything ended they went to each other to talk and walk.
- You were fantastic today Neville- mumbled Hannah
- You were too, you saved me by casting your patronus, thank you Hannah - Neville said as he gave her a sweet and small smile
- Thank you for always being there, even if I was a pain in the ass, you helped me a lot.-
- I wanted to be there for you, I know how it feels to no longer be able to talk to your mother - Hannah felt a little guilty, Neville's parents were still alive but they were insane and no longer recognized himself and yet she dared feel no one understood her when Neville already knew and that he always tried to give his best and not be resentful, the contrary of her.
- I want to apologize for taking you for granted before, I was a monster, I realize you lost your family too and I really appreciate you and I still want to be your friend.
- You are my friend Hannah, and I want you to know I appreciate you too and you're not a monster, you were grieving and learning how to deal with your pain like the rest of us.
Neville and her got even closer than before after that conversation if it was possible and soon they realized they felt stronger in each other's company and as she got to be a healer in Hogwarts and the new owner of the Leaky Cauldron and him the new teacher of Herbology in Hogwarts they started a relationship, and 3 years later Neville bent on one knee and proposed and Hannah said yes.
youtube
Hannah indeed learnt to be better as she acknowledged that she had to recognize and feel her emotions not suppress them, and her brave and humble acts earned her a memorial tribute in Hufflecrew along Susan and her other classmates.
