this sounds like some firestarting type of shit here but y do you not like yuri? you dont have to answer btw
It's not that I don't like yuri, I'm just tired of the current meme of calling everything yuri
I know it's not that deep, but to me it just reeks of "wlw are better than mlm" type shit and someone once pointed out the "dark academia for boys; cottege core for girls" vibe on a post and people were like "uhh boys can be yuri and girls can be yaoi" but how often do we actually see girls (or anything else) get called yaoi-core?
Again this isn't like a moral judgement of anything and I like yuri just fine! Just personally tired of seeing everything being called yuri

Ryka Aoki’s Light from Uncommon Stars is one of the best books I read in 2021, and it is also one of the weirdest. It centers around three women: Shizuka Satomi (a violin teacher who made a deal with a devil and must deliver seven violin prodigies’ souls in order to save her own), Katrina Nguyen (a transgender teenage girl, wildly talented on the violin and deserving of so much more than she has been given), and Lan Tran (a retired interstellar space captain who runs a donut shop with her four children). When Shizuka discovers Katrina in a park, she immediately knows she has found her final soul, but Shizuka’s growing feelings for Lan may change her perspective on everything.
If you think that summary sounds like a roller coaster, wait until you read the book.

Would you believe that more than 26 sapphic books come out this month? It’s true! Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to find out which books have queer representation, or what kind of representation they have. So here’s a big list of bi and lesbian books out this month, sorted by genre.

If you want a teen romcom in an F/F YA book, this is the read for you!
It’s enemies to lovers and fake dating! It is very much like a teen romcom movie: the two of them get to know each other over their music choices on the drive. They have miscommunication. They both open up about their insecurities. Scottie realizes that, despite being hung up on her toxic ex, maybe the girl she’s been looking for has been right in front of her this whole time. There’s also the “only one bed” trope. They even discuss teen romcom movies!
I listened to this as an audiobook, and it was a quick, fun listening experience! It’s cute, and the ending is cathartic and sweet.

When I say I want sapphic romcoms, this is what I want. I want sapphic romcoms that pack an emotional punch. That present the diversity and the affinity of queer womanhood. That have queer women who call themselves queer with no explanation and bi women who have loved men. That have complex family dynamics that both are about queerness and absolutely are not. That feel like romance novels with romance tropes and everything that we love about romance and are at the same time fundamentally, intrinsically, profoundly, and lovingly queer. Romcoms that f*ck and also fall in love. Romcoms with real, wild emotions and feminism and humor on every page. Romcoms that were written for queer women about our own lives, to be enjoyed only secondarily by everyone else. When I say I want sapphic romcoms, I mean I want this book.

do tell us abt your beef with "cottagecore" and "dark academia" tho :eyes emoji:
let's strap in real quick while i try to sum up all of my issues with these:
this is, in big part, due to a great distaste i have for this current of everything needing to have an 'aesthetic' (which is just hyper consumerism) and it operates like fast fashion. it's all performative and this idea that you need to have only one 'aesthetic' and stick to it is absurd and beyond stupid. this article by maria popova, which references a famous susan sontag article, sums it up well.
i'll go in order. so, dark academia.
the whole ethos and pull of the 'aesthetic' is this fantasy of studying literature in an "old" university, where you talk about art, beauty, literature and it's taken very seriously. the typical visual of the aesthetic is that you're studying at some ivy league school, oxford or cambridge, ect ect. this really blew up during the beginning of the pandemic where we were all attending classes over Zoom and asynchronously, i noticed. there's also this idea that there's something wrong or rotten going on under the surface, something deadly but very very serious and beautiful: at least that's how it's marketed in publishing.
the whole thing is founded on extreme elitism, classicism, intensely Eurocentric and sniffs of white supremacy. it's wish fulfillment based on something pretty terrible at the core and honestly: you really don't need to attend some ivy league school or older university to study literature. you can do that anywhere. a good article that goes into greater detail.
if you want to look at the evils that happen in any university setting, you can do that easily by looking at the sexual assault rates, the racism and violent misogyny and sexual violence of Greek Life on campuses, and racism. not hard, honestly. happens at elite and private schools, happens at public universities.
now cottagecore.
i think this is partially born out of a desire to escape corporate america and the exploitative labor force (which i sympathize with) and wanting to grow your own food and plants, which a lot of us started doing during the beginning of the pandemic. however: people do not realize that to work a farm or cottage is work. to grow your own food, mind your animals, and take care of your own home away from greater society is work and the way that wlw and lesbians have been 'designated' to this "aesthetic" reeks of traditional gender roles being forced on us. the images that may come up when you think of cottagecore also uh
ekes of a colonialist wet dream. it also rubs elbows with the wishes of the alt-right and where they want to force women back into.
this article details it well.
both of these popularized aesthetics reek of elitism, misogyny, and white supremacy but fake progressive.
this article also goes into the specifics of the issues with this brand of aesthetic:
Kimberly Jenkins, the founder of the Fashion and Race Database and Artis Solomon, thinks it’s an interesting time for this aesthetic to be embraced, following the return of many people to the urban environments they fled. She notes that much of the allure of many of these handcrafted things — made slowly and with integrity — is wrapped in layers of moral purity.
i can see the appeal in these two, but there's so much brushing off and ignoring of the ugly roots of these two (along with so many other "aesthetics")
my other beef with these two is how they've played a part in how now publishing is marketing literature based on tropes and aesthetics and it pisses me off because trying to tell me, "oh it's dark academia," "enemies to lovers" "very cottagecore" not only doesn't tell me jack shit about the book, it's shallow as hell. just because something is 'dark academia' doesn't mean i'm going to like it or enjoy it. same thing if you tell me, "it has lesbians."
great! is there literally anything else you can tell me about this piece of media. that's not enough for me to go on to spark my interest.
the performance of online aesthetics on places like tiktok, instagram, and twitter reeks not only of 2014 tumblr, it reeks of fast fashion. it's all consumerism and consumption.

Sapphic September
A colleague pointed out to me that it was #sapphicseptember, and while I’m not always one to jump on literary trends, I like the idea of this one. I firmly believe there’s a double standard in popular media that prioritizes m/m relationships, and that they’re shown as much more acceptable and family friendly, while w/w relationships are still somewhat hidden and/or fetishized.
So let’s fix that a little, shall we? Here are a few great reads that I’ve loved, some recent and some not, that feature wlw relationships at the front and centre of the story, to help you fill out your #sappicSeptember (or any other time of year, really) reading bingo card! If you’ve got more, reblog and add; wouldn’t we love to see a great reading list get traction?
Tumblr media
THE MIDNIGHT LIE by Marie Rutkoski (YA, Fantasy, Magic): Lush, beautiful prose and enchantment. Nirrim is an orphan who makes a risky deal with the flirtatious and mysterious Sid. Together, they embark on an adventure through the luscious and prohibited world of the High-Kith, in order to solve the mystery of Ethin’s past. Lots of themes about facing your past and who you really are. Some deliciously steamy moments, and heartfelt ones, too.
Tumblr media
ONE LAST STOP by Casey McQuiston (Adult, Time Travel, Contemporary): Definite Millennial vibes, and lots of found family as August, a young woman in her mid-twenties, moves to NYC and meets the charming and bold Jane on the subway. Everything about Jane seems perfect, but as sparks fly, they discover that Jane isn’t able to leave the Q Train - in fact, she hasn’t left it since the 70s. Fun and cute, and the romance is pure sexy, heart-rushing, sparkling exhilaration.
Tumblr media
A MASTER OF DJINN by P. Djèlí Clark | (Adult, Fantasy, Steampunk, Mystery, Historical Fiction): Cairo, 1912. Fatma is one of the Ministry’s only female agents. She’s independent and tough, so it’s no surprise when she’s called to the city’s strangest case: a secret brotherhood is murdered by a mysterious man calling himself the dangerous and magical al-Jahiz, returned from the dead. Fatma and her clever girlfriend Siti must get to the bottom of the matter, and see if the imposter really is who he claims to be, before it’s too late.
Tumblr media
THE PULL OF THE STARS by Emma Donoghue | (Adult, Historical Fiction, Nurses): Spend three days in a Dublin Maternity ward with the tough and compassionate Nurse Julia Power. Up to her elbows in life and death, she’s fighting alongside the women who are her patients, and the Great Flu of 1918 means that the hospital is overwhelmingly short-staffed. Assigned to Nurse Power is the young, bright, Bridie Sweeney, and though the pair is at odds at first, the next few days’ battles will bring them closer than they imagined. Tightly written, heart-in-your-throat atmosphere, and be prepared for intense emotion.
Tumblr media
UPRIGHT WOMEN WANTED by Sarah Gailey | (Adult, Speculative Fiction, Dystopian, Western): A quick, feisty and vibrant take on the Western. Esther is escaping the conventional life of marriage and expectations that her family wants for her. She stows herself away in the book wagon of the Librarians; a guerilla group of badass cowgirls fighting back against the corrupt government and distributing illegal materials and hope. Fresh and fun and packs a hell of a punch.
Tumblr media
A LESSON IN VENGEANCE by Victoria Lee | (YA, Dark Academia, Mystery, Paranormal): Felicity and new girl Ellis are students at Dalloway School, and team up to investigate the mysterious deaths of five previous students, rumoured to be witches. Nice and haunted, great for back-to-school vibes, and, heads up, has quite a spicy scene.
Tumblr media
LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB by Malinda Lo | (YA, Historical Fiction, San Francisco Chinatown): During the 1950s, the Red Scare was in full force, and Lily Hu and Kathleen Miller are two young women who are facing the loss of everything to keep their love. Immersive and slow, but beautifully worth it. Makes you wonder when lesbian bars will see the light of day again.
Tumblr media
WHY BE HAPPY WHEN YOU COULD BE NORMAL? by Jeanette Winterson | (Non-fiction, memoir): I don’t read a ton of memoirs, but if you’ve never read Winterson you’re in for the ultimate treat. This is a beautiful story of an author’s life (Winterson came out as a lesbian when she was 16), but also, you’ll be wanting to highlight just about every line in it; her writing is gorgeous. (My own copy is full of highlights and notes, and is actually currently on loan to a friend, which is why I don’t have a pic of it!)
Tumblr media
THE MOON IS ALWAYS FEMALE by Marge Piercy | (Poetry): I know that Saphho is the obvious choice, but we already know her, so let’s come up with something a bit different. This is a small collection, and I’m not super into poetry but since the pandemic has messed with my focus, I’ve discovered a lot more of it. Piercy’s style is stunning; sharp and deep and lush, all at once. There are some beautiful hard-hitters, and “Limited but Fertile Possibilities are Offered by This Brochure” reads like a heart-pounding, wlw, rally cry.

LAY ME DOWN. a wip by creme.
Tumblr media
[ID: an opening between two trees surrounded by ferns and leading into darkness, with text across it that reads LAY ME DOWN in white letters. END ID]
GENRE. YA, fantasy/horror, post-post-apocalypse, dark academia (kind of???)
POV. third person present tense, dual pov.
SUMMARY.
A GIRL WHO HEARS THE VOICES OF THE DEAD IN HER EARS
A STAR PUPIL WITH FAR WORSE THAN BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS
ONE SECRET TO RUIN THEM ALL
AGNES-MARIA is no stranger to death. A bleeding-heart runaway with visions of ghosts that follow her wherever she goes and the burning need to live pulsing deep in her chest, after her near-death at the hands of a mysterious cult that turned the quiet life she lived with her parents upside down, Agnes doesn’t know who, or what, to believe in anymore. Her god, her parents, the very foundations she built her whole world on have collapsed and cast her out into the heart of the forest, where dead things walk anew and the plants reach for blood and nothing, nothing, is safe.
So when she’s offered survival and a chance to understand the magic that poisons her veins by a deadly stranger she meets among the trees, how can she possibly refuse? But things at The Library, a cutthroat, sprawling fortress dedicated to preserving the last of humanity’s knowledge, aren’t what they seem. When the ghost of a girl appears and begs Agnes to help solve the crime of her own murder the secrets of The Library (and the person who brought her to it) begin to unravel. And this time when the reckoning comes for Agnes, she has nowhere left to run.
PALLAS knows exactly what they are. The Bloodhound, a weapon honed to perfection, the star pupil of The Library and an expert wielder of deadly life-magic that takes just as much as it gives. Pallas is perfect, and they intend to keep it that way. But there is a rot pulsing beneath their skin and a secret they thought dead and buried is unearthed when they make the decision not to kill the girl they stumble across in the woods on a mission gone wrong. A girl who could be their salvation, or their demise if she doesn’t stop poking her fingers at things that are liable to bite them off.
Yes, Pallas knows exactly what they are. But things in The Library are never what they seem. The Library is brutal, The Library is cold, it and it’s mysterious board of directors will chew you up and spit you up with a second thought. Pallas is all too aware of just how replaceable they are, how they are running out of time before the sins of the past swallow them whole. And as their carefully constructed world begins to crumble around them and everything they thought they knew is spun out of control Pallas has to ask themselves the ultimate questions: who are they really? And is what they’re dying for even worth it at all?
CHARACTERS.
AGNES. she/her. 17. the lost girl.
PALLAS. they/them. 17. the star student.
FIVER. he/him. 25. the failed prophet.
NINA. she/they. 18 (at death). the trapped spirit.
CW. body horror. cults. religious trauma/abuse. the shitty levels of elitism inherent in academia. (reference to/vague description of) cannibalism. gore. murder. grief/death/general existentialism. depictions of mental illness and unhealthy character dynamics.
FEATURING. Magic With A Price. rule of three. not a single neurotypical character in sight. sword lesbians. an exploration of the toxic friendships we form in our youth set against a backdrop of ghosts and murder. love as a destructive force. a blossoming wlw relationship but honestly the whole thing is more about incredibly complex platonic dynamics than anything. (but on that note) falling in love with a ghost. humanity on the brink of collapse. finding hope in a dying world. found family. the transformative power of kindness. gods and the people who kill them. just,,,, a really fucked up forest (it wants to kill you. it wants to kill you so bad). Something That Used To Be A Deer But Isn’t Anymore. redemption arcs (kind of) (its complicated). corruption arcs. the power of True Names. sunshine character and grumpy asshole dynamic. coming of age but make it fucked up. a truly massive library. healing from/acknowledging trauma.
AESTHETIC. gray skies. the smell of freshly turned earth and rotting vegetation. soft, faded pages of an ancient book. a long dark hallway lined with bookshelves that stretch into oblivion. looking into a mirror and your reflection being Wrong. moss and vines bursting from the eyes of a skull. rust and ruin and cracked marble pillars. shattered stained glass. the sound of a storm blowing through the trees. a forest at twilight. abandoned alters and desecrated tombs. a chalice filled with something thick and black. trees that go on forever. a canopy so thick it blots out the sky. the labyrinth halls of a building much bigger on the inside than it should be. coughing up blood. walls lined with bones. the remnants of humanity overgrown and crumbling. flowers bursting through skin. something buried among the roots, something trying to get out.
TAGLIST (ask to be +/-). @vellichor-virgo @transmasc-wizard @doctormoss @gerbermatter @cactusprincewrites @houndmouthed @muddshadow @just-wublrful @midnights-melodiverse @corkywantstowrite @shrunkupthejams @andromedatalksaboutstuff @kingsinking @lungs-and-gills @lychniscitrus @phantomnations @onomatopiya @sapphos-scientist @arctic-oceans @perilous-prologue @redbloodprose

Do you have a recommendation list of wlw books? Could be your favorites or the ones you thought were the best or just anything really. I'm always looking for more of them
of course my dude
lets get the big boys out of the way
this is how you lose the time war by amal el-mohtar and max gladstone. you've probably heard about. you've probably seen quotes from it. i myself was late to it (i read it the other month) but lord is the hype worth it (in my opinion). made me crazy.
the priory of the orange tree by samantha shannon. yes its big. im sorry but it is worth it. samantha the audacity to create sabran berethnet and let me read the book in a 24 period. the yearning of it all.
gideon the ninth/harrow the ninth by tamsyn muir. its aight. im not the person you should go to about gtn tbh but everyone else out there will tell you about it.
my personal favs
a memory called empire/a desolation called peace by arkady martine. yes i am talking about them again. these two books are the best thing ever written. how many hugos can one woman win. it is so intricate and layered and nobody says what they mean and the politics and the brain surgery and the sluttiness of former ambassadors. thinking about mahit dzmare's character makes me feral. three seagrass can be a teixcalaan so personal.
foundryside/shorefall by robert jackson bennett. me once again banging my one man drum about foundryside. please it is so good i dont care if the fantasy magic system isn't for you. there is a shit talking key. there is brain surgery. there are complex morals. there is a wlw romance just for the hell of it. where the plot goes in shorefall to this day makes me batshit insane. i have read shorefall at least half a dozen times in four months. can the third book come out now please mr bennett i am dying.
the long way to the small angry planet by becky chambers. becky chambers my beloved. i would die for you. i am so sorry i haven't read to be taught yet but i will buy everything you write. but about this actual book it is perfect. everything in this book was so good and soft and whenever i thought something would happen that would make me mad. nope. every single book in this series (there are four of them and all are beautiful to look at if you dont live in america) is outstanding. becky chambers and arkady martine duking it out for the hugo next year.
other books i wholeheartedly recommend
the rise of kyoshi/the shadow of kyoshi by fc lee. yes they are fantastic. if you like atla read them.
when the tiger came down the mountain by nghi vo. stunning novella but i recommend reading the first one the empress of salt and fortune first. also stunning but not as gay.
the jasmine throne by tasha suri. the start of a promising trilogy. the slow burn reeled me in lads. but in my honest opinion not as morally grey as what the people on goodreads said.
sweet and bitter magic by adrienne tooley. do you not mind ya? do you like every single trope imaginable shoved into a book? this is the book for you. the angst got to me ill admit it.
the atlas six by olivie blake. some kind of weird dark academia shit going on here. a plot relevant threesome. not wlw but theres lgbt rep throughout.
the library of the unwritten/the archive of the forgotten by aj hackwith. again not wlw but lgbt rep but i adore these books. third in the trilogy comes out the end of the year and i am stoked. cool library concepts is the best book plot and this are by far the coolest.
steel crow saga by paul krueger. a fun read overall. atla and pokemon vibes with some of that sweet sweet complex moral questions with a fun wlw couple.
jane unlimited by kristin cashore. i dont care it gets really weird in the end i adore this book. get weird kirstin you do you. fun chose your own adventure type thing. main character has romantic moments with two of the characters and its not romance heavy.
finna by nino cipri. novella about two exes trying to get through inter dimensional ikea. yes that is the plot. yes it is good
books that i haven't finished/read yet but have heard they are good
she who became the sun by shelley parker-chan. ive read the first couple chapters and was meh but everyone else ive seen that has read it loved it. is said to be mulan meets the song of achilles, which are two things i have not seen/read so.
one last stop by casey mcquiston. i have read 2/3s of this but ill be honest the sex kinda threw me out of the book. if you dont have this problem and liked rwrb you will also like this.
the liars dictionary by eley williams. if you like pretentious english kid speak. really neat idea for a book is you can get past that.
the councillor by ej beaton. ugh i wanted to read this one so bad but i found it at not a good reading time for me. sounds like it is fantastic though. politics heavy book.
unconquerable sun by kate elliot. if you like greek retellings and can stand tense changes (i cannot).
black sun by rebecca roanhorse. have heard nothing but good things and is hugo nominated and yet i have not finished. shame on me.
these feathered flames by alexandra overy. russian folklore inspired fantasy. dont know whether it is classified as ya but has ya vibes.
fireheart tiger by aliette de bodard. i haven't even started this one but its short and has politics, yearning, and yearning while doing politics.

Hispanic TV Shows Recs (with poc/queer rep)
I’ve decided on doing a post about the most known tv shows in Spanish and I am focusing on shows with POC and queer representation because I am POC and queer, no other reason. Enjoy!
La Casa de las Flores: A rich Mexican family discovers that the patriarch has a hidden life and a hidden family. Very entertaining series and has queer and trans characters (although the trans woman is played by a cis man, which I find... questionable, but I find the whole thing very respectful, talks a lot about transphobia and homophobia in my cis opinion), which is surprising for a series made in such a conservative country. Definitely recommend! Has been the origin material of many Mexican memes. Link to trailer
Juana Inés: Mexican miniseries about Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, from when she was a young teen until her death. Very dark academia, gorgeous cinematography and very accurate from what I could tell. Really really recommend! Link to trailer
La Casa de Papel: I haven’t watched this one but everyone I know who has is obsessed with it. It’s an heist Spanish tv series, and has good queer and POC rep. Link to trailer
Club de cuervos: This was Netflix’s first Hispanic original series. Has very famous Mexican actors and it’s about two siblings trying to take control of their father’s sports team. Link to trailer
Elite: A Spanish series about a private school called “Las Encinas” that welcomes three students from the working class. I’d describe this as the Spanish Riverdale, lots of teen drama, lots of sex and tension between students. Also has murder and investigations. Not my cup of tea but might be yours! Link to trailer
Desenfrenadas: A coming of age story about a group of four young adults that go on a roadtrip in Mexico. Good story, amazing cast, very good musical choices, original! Link to trailer
Las chicas del cable: Set in 1928 in Madrid, Spain. Four women have just been hired in a new telecommunications company. Definitely a character-focused story, but I really dig it. Has a wlw couple and strong female characters! Link to trailer
El ministerio del tiempo: The premise of this show is INSANE. A secret Spanish government organization that only very few people know about which purpose is to prevent that time travelers change the present time. I haven’t watched it either but it’s next on my To Watch list. Link to trailer
Merlí: This is a series that follows the format of “Literature/Philosophy professor challenges their students’ view of their world through knowledge”, very similar to Dead Poets Society. You will learn a lot about different philosophers! (Addition by @lookingat-the-moon: Merlí is a Catalan TV show. The OG is in Catalan and then they translated it into Spanish. After Merlí you can also watch “Merlí: Sapere Aude” that it’s like a continuation of the story) Link to trailer
La jauría: This Chilean series just came out this year and follows an all-male group that is called “La Jauría” that assault female students from a catholic school, and the investigation that follows to take them down. Very empowering and with feminist values. Could be potentially triggering but if you like crime shows this might be right up your alley. Link to trailer.
Hernán: This series is about the Spanish colonization that happened in the 15th century in American territories. I haven’t watched it because it pisses me off that the focus is on the colonizer and the event still hurts even six centuries later but I’ve heard is good! I consider it important to watch historical series about very rarely touched issues and it was extremely researched. It is still mixed people talking about indigenous people’s history but I haven’t watched it and cannot emit an opinion. Link to first episode
La Rosa de Guadalupe: I guess I don’t have to tell you what this series is about. You know, I know you know but I’ll do it anyway. Just pure madness, the craziest situations about teen pregnancy, kidnappings, anime-loving teens, predators, addictions, just everything, but manages to be funny as hell because the acting is so incredibly bad. Link to the funniest and most memeable thing you’ll ever see.
Mi marido tiene más familia: A Mexican telenovela that made news because it was the first widely distributed series with a gay teen couple. Link to all episodes
Amar a muerte: Also a Mexican telenovela, also with a homosexual relationship, but this time is between two young women, Juliana and Valentina. I think they’re making a spin-off series based only on them?? Link to trailer and the trailer of Juliantina
El chavo del ocho: Probably the most iconic children show in Mexico’s history. It started being televised in 1973 and it’s a situational comedy about a homeless child that lives in a neighborhood helped by his friends, and the funny situations he somehow gets himself in. Has had incredible impact to Mexican pop-culture. Very charming characters. Full episodes can be found on Youtube! Link to playlist

Since one of my friends asked for anime suggestions, I figured I would make a small list for them here as a post.
1. Welcome to demon school Iruma Kun
Type: comedy and school life
My personal summary: a hilarious anime about a boy who gets adopted by the king of demons. The protag is very likable in my opinion as he is a good guy but also a doormat so it’s fun to see him grow with his friends. Just genuinely very fun, but also follows somewhat of a story line and can have its touching moments. Just 10/10 if you want a good light hearted laugh I would say. Highly suggest for those who want to watch a casual anime that will make them laugh.
2. Toilet Bound Hanako Kun
Type: fantasy and school life (also bit romance)
My personal summary: girl meets spirit boy with a dark side and now is his assistant because she effed up because she is a little boy crazy for handsome guys. But it’s okay cause now she goes on whacky adventures with spirits and is trying to get to know the spirit boy who kinda saved her and continues to save her. This one is both funny and sweet, but also can be dark at times. The characters all have very interesting personalities and dynamics, and the cast is actually pretty small so you get to see a lot more of the main characters develop. Very good story wise and character wise. Highly suggest to lovers of fantasy but are also not too into anime.
3. Assassination classroom
Type: Comedy, coming of age, and School life
My personal summary: Teenagers are earths last hope to be saved from destruction as they are tasked to kill their teacher who looks like a man and an octopus had a baby that has super strength and speed. This is my all time favorite anime, and it is a very, very, VERY touching underdog story. It has so much humor but also so much darkness but so many of the characters feel real and it still to this day has arguably the saddest yet most satisfying endings in anime that I have seen, and I watched it back in 2017ish. It just has a bit of everything and the storyline is amazing, the characters are so well written, and the concept is very interesting as well. I just would not recommend this to those who aren’t comfortable with fan service, as it does appear a bit often in this one. Highly suggest to anyone who wants to watch a found family or underdog story. Also, amazing English dub, one of the few animes I suggest the English dub over the English sub (English sub is good too, but I love the dub so much).
4. Bloom into you
Type: romance, coming of age, school
My personal summary: very gay, and very well written. It’s a story that follows Yuu Koito who is a late bloomer who doesn’t get love, which she has constantly read in the media and had this big expectation for. She then meets her schools class president who takes a liking to her knowing Yuu doesn’t think she can fall in love with someone. This is very good I think for lgbtq+ rep as it takes the topics very seriously and handles them respectfully. It handles questioning sexuality and finding yourself, as well as taking pride in it. It expresses both being a lesbian and asexual, as well as late bloomers and domestic lesbians. It also handles topics of mourning and bad ways of coping and expectations from what I remember. I am more of a manga reader but I have heard splendid reviews about the anime, the only thing is that this series is a lot more serious and the anime isn’t finished (the manga is though, so I suggest this path more if you can afford it.) highly suggest for anyone wanting lgbtq+ rep.
5. Rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai
Type: sci-fi, romance (this one doesn’teel like school at all but they are high schoolers)
My personal summary: a sci-fi take on high schoolers teenage years and problems, following Sakura as he tries to help and solve the cases of people with “adolescence syndrome”, which is surrounded by their problems and insecurities in life that causes abnormal and supernatural things to happen. Very compelling story and again is more serious, but it also knows how to hit you in the feels. The main characters are lovable and have one of the best romances I have seen in anime, and all the other characters are really likable too. I highly suggest to anyone interested in a good story because this one just takes the cake.
6. New game!(!)
Type: slice of life
My personal summary: mc is a girl who gets a game designing job right out of high school and now must work on a team with her idol. Very light hearted, and also quite gay in my opinion. I personally like slice of life yuri genres and etc., but this one is my favorite. The cast is lovable again (always important), and it has this theme of working hard and going after your dreams. It is one with a bit of fan service (far less than others, but still a warning for my younger friends following), but it makes up for those moments with very heart felt moments between characters. I genuinely adore the second season as for a slice of life genre, it follows a bit more of a story and it gets a lot gayer. However, being a slice of life it isn’t really explicitly lgbtq+ rep, but there is one couple that has major subtexts and moments and a really cute scene at the ending. I do suggest this to those who like the slice of life genre and perhaps want a bit of lgbtq+ rep, but not to anyone who doesn’t like slower paced stories. Oh, and also the art style is adorable.
7. Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace
Type: mystery, bit of a thriller
My personal summary: just a really good detective series. I haven’t watched this one in two years, but whenever I think about a dark mystery series, this is one of the top 3 to come to my mind, and is the most underrated one. It’s just very dark but also very compelling, so I suggest this to anyone who likes those sort of things. It also has an amazing English dub.
8. Little witch academia
Type: coming of age, fantasy, school life
My personal summary: another underdog story about a girl who dreams of becoming a witch like her idol and going to witch school… must I say more? It’s the gay witchcraft vibe that we all adore, a funny and lovable story that follows a girl chasing her dreams to become a witch. Again, likable characters, and an interesting story. It also has a unique art style that is adorable, and is very accessible seeing as its on Netflix. I highly suggest for younger viewers as this one is very kid friendly from what I know, but is also an amazing story with a nice fantasy aspect. Also, there is a bit of gay subtext and a hell of a lot of diakko shippers for wlw content if you like that (with a rival to lovers dynamic). MC can be paired with a guy or girl depending on how you wish to interpret it, and that screams bi rights to me :)))

It’s already April, uh? The beginning of the March was so good in terms of reading, but from the middle to the end of the month, a lot of things happened in my personal life that made me not focus and not want to read. I still managed to read 18 books?? I think audiobooks are helping me a lot with this.
Talking about all the books I read in March under the cut  (๑˘︶˘๑)
In reading order:
The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste
I've been searching for more spooky/horror middle-grade books and I came across this one. This story is inspired by Caribbean folklore and it's so cool! I loved Corinne, the main character, and her adventurous and courageous personality, and how she saves her father and the island she lives on!
Recommending for: anyone who wants something spooky but not too scary and kids saving the day.
Echo After Echo by Amy Rose Capetta
I read some positive reviews of this book but unfortunately, it fell flat for me. And there are so many things that I'd usually love! The murder mystery, the theater setting, the wlw romance... However, the romance is dull, the murder mystery didn't thrill me and the narrator is tiresome. There isn’t anything necessarily wrong with the story, it’s just uninteresting.
The Lying Game by Ruth Ware
This book always appears in Dark Academia lists so I decided to give it a try. The "dark academia" part is in the past, in flashbacks and it's the most entertaining part. The lying game is a fun idea and I liked the problems the girls got themselves in because of that. The first part of the book is more sad than mysterious or thrilling, but the second part becomes more exciting. However, this is another case of a book with characters not interesting enough to make you care about what they did and what happens to them in the present.
A Dowry of Blood by S. T. Gibson
You can see my full review of this novella here. In short, this novella didn't develop their characters properly, the story is rushed and the gothic atmosphere is lacking.
A Pho Love Story by Loan Le
This book was everything!!! It's a Romeo and Juliet kind of story, the main characters' are from families that are rivals in the business of Vietnamese restaurants. The romance is fluffy and lighthearted and at the same time, it tells realistic immigrant stories and the struggle of children of immigrants. It's adorable and sad, and it made me hungry.
Recommending for: anyone looking for a lighthearted and fluffy romance, with lots of food but with a realistic background.
Untamed Shore by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
The pacing of this book was slower than I expected of a book categorized as a thriller. And most of the time I just wanted to protect Viridiana and take her away from those horrible people. But the ending was so good! I also loved the small-coastal-town setting and all the dynamics between the people from this small town and Viridiana, and the dynamics of the local people and the tourists from the USA.
Recommending for: anyone looking for a more atmospheric and slow-paced mystery with a beautiful coastal setting.
The Black God's Drums by P. Djèlí Clark
It's been a while since I got so hooked up on a sci-fi story! I think it's the way Clark writes stories but I got so absorbed in the plot and I cared for Creeper, the main character. And the resolution of this novella is amazing! I won't talk too much, because the story is 100 pages long and I don't want to spoil anything.
Recommending for: all sci-fi and fantasy enthusiasts!
The Mystery of Black Hollow Lane by Julia Nobel
Dark Academia for kids? This story was so much fun! I'm becoming obsessed with the atmosphere of these boarding schools in England! The mystery involves a secret society! And a Latin Society?? Sign me up for that!! Loved these kids against the greedy and evil adults. I hate Emmy's mom, though.
Recommending for: the dark academia club, middle-grade mystery fans, boarding school enthusiasts.
Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor
This was such a fun adventure! The first part reminded me a lot of Who Fears Death and some aspects are similar, but Akata Witch has a more young protagonist. I love the worldbuilding of this book! I think it's cool how the magic world coexists with the non-magic world and Sunny gets the best of both worlds. Bookstores with magic books!! Magical events!! A magical university!!
Recommending for: all you fantasy readers out there!
This Is Kind of an Epic Love Story by Kacen Callender
This book started well. I love a second-chance-to-love kind of book. However, the conflict of the book revolved around the main character not wanting to talk about his feeling.... for reasons? And there was so much pressure for Nathan, the mc, to have sex! And every teenager only talks about sex! I know this an important part of some people's lives but Nathan says over and over again that he doesn't feel prepared and he wants to wait, which is great because there anot enough boys talking about this in ya books. And then, Nathan does some dumb stuff and it all goes downhill.
Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers
One of my favorite books of the month! I loved the fun part of the book, girl meets girls and they get married on the same day in las Vegas. Girls flies across the country to find her wife! Grace and Yuki relationship gives me all the comforting and domestic vibes, even when they were getting to know each other and I loved this feeling. Yuki has a podcast and takes Grace to hunt monster and these bonding moments are everything. But the sad part is so sensible and realistic, the confusion, the stress, the systemic racism. I love that the book shows the beginning of Grace's healing process and she starts to figure out her priorities. I wanted to cry tears of sadness and then of joy when Grace and Yuki got together again.
Recommending for: someone looking for a more emotional and slow-paced romance.
Paper Girls, Volume 1 by Matt Wilson, Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff K. Chiang
I was excited about this comic, but I don't know, there're some things that made me curious, like the cliffhanger in the end and the astronauts from the future. But the girls are not charismatic and I don't think I'll be reading the series any further.
Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi with Geoffrey Trousselot (Translator)
This book was everything I expected of it. I love this contemplative and reflective narrative. I read some books from Japanese authors that are in the same style and I love the slow-pace and the more intern conflicts rather than lots of action. I had this one on my tbr for a while because I like time travel books and this one had a more fantasy approach to it and I was not disappointed!
Recommending for: anyone looking for more intern conflicts kind of story and discussion of family and love relationships, with a dash of fantasy to add to the drama!
Cheer Up: Love and Pompoms by Crystal Frasier with Val Wise (Illustrator)
I received a copy of this comic from NetGalley and I’m writing a more detailed review, but you should add it to your tbr now! Bebe has a hard time navigating high school being a trans girl, but the romance is sweet and all the characters grow a lot in this story! Lots of support and a girl squad!
Recommending for: anyone looking for a sweet and short ya romance!
Stage Dreams by Melanie Gillman
Another queer comic with a trans main character! It's a western story with a heist in the plot. It's so short! But it still fun and lighthearted. Not a big fan of the colored pencils style, but it’s a personal preference.
Recommending for: anyone looking for queer historical stories with some adventure in them.
The Secret of White Stone Gate by Julia Nobel
This is the sequel of The Mystery of Black Hollow Lane. But they changed the narrator of the audiobook!! I didn't like how she performed some voices and this made me enjoy less this book. There isn't much mystery in this one and the big conflict is dismissed so simply! One of my favorite characters doesn't appear much in this book and there're more annoying adults to be mad about. Ugh.

WHY THE FUCK I GOTTA REMIND YOU... THAT I RUN THIS SHIT?
Tumblr media
hello, and welcome. I am a new blog here and I'm still trying to learn how to use tumblr. I created this account to write a little bit, because I'm not confident enough in writing long-ass fanfics. please, be patient with me. this will be my pinned post until I have enough to do a masterlist. (and until i learn how to make an aestheticaly pleasing one)
ABOUT ME:
Tumblr media
you can call me "morax"
she/her (but "they" is fine sometimes)
21
college student + intern
english is my 2nd language, so there might be a grammar mistake somewhere
major erwin, toji, kaeya and zhongli simp
this will be a NSFW blog, so minors can only interact in the posts I EXPLICITLY SAY IT'S SFW, OTHERWISE YOU'LL GET BLOCKED
I am planning on writing NSFW, yes, that's the whole point of me creating this blog, HOWEVER, I don't know if I'll do it straight away because I'm still not confident enough in writing it, but I will. it's a promise
WHAT I'M PLANNING TO WRITE:
Tumblr media
KINKS:
honestly? basically anything besides CNC, incest, scat, vomit, daddy kink, drugging and major dark themes (like people being kidnapped, I don't know if that has a name)
that said, it's understood that I can write for basically everything, including degradation, worship, piss, face slapping, etc.
have a specific kink scenario with a specific character? please send an ask! bellow you can see who I'm writing for at the moment, but of course it can change
FANDOMS:
Tumblr media
before we begin, let me just say something: I will NOT write nsfw of ANY minor character. beg, scream, throw a tantrum, I don't care. I won't. don't even come at me with that "age up" thing. if you have to change their age, you know what you're asking is wrong.
HAIKYUU:
asahi, aone, hinata, yachi, ushijima, daichi, iwaizumi (gentle reminder: you have nsfw requests? make sure they're placed in the time skip, I will NOT write nsfw while they're still in school)
JUJUSTU KAISEN:
gojo, nanami, toji, yuuji (only sfw)
BOKU NO HERO ACADEMIA:
aizawa
GENSHIN IMPACT:
everyone who is playable, except hu tao and keqing (xiangling, chongyun, xingqiu, razor, bennett, fischl, xinyan, noelle: only sfw; klee, diona, qiqi, sayu: only platonic, like daughter or sister)
ATTACK ON TITAN:
erwin, miche, mikasa, hange, sasha, ymir, historia
"will you write wlw/mlm?" as a lgbt myself, yeah, I don't see why not.
"will you write ships?" yeah, it just depends on the ship.
and that's it! thank you for reading if you came all the way here, hope you like my future works. see you next time. :)

What elements of romanticism do you like in dark academia or have experienced yourself? My romantic brain is on hiatus atm and I need some inspiration for my novel. It’s wLw but any relationship ideas will do.
hi sorry i just saw this! i specifically love dark academia baths, i know it sounds weird but like, classical music, rose petals, red wine, maybe a good novel. i think that romanticizing small things is a big part of dark academia. the reason i got into dark academia was my ex girlfriend was really into it and i fell in love with her world view. everything was special and beautiful to her and i really loved that. i think that your novel will be great anyway you desire to write it! good luck! feel free to send me any more questions!!

asroarke’s 2020 book recs
Ordinarily, I make an end of the year fic recs list, but I can count on one hand the number of new fanfictions I’ve read this year (new ones... you all know I reread my old favorites constantly). I have, however, read new books. So instead of a fic rec list, 2020 brings a book rec list. Huzzah!
Tumblr media
1. A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik Hands down the best book I read all year. It takes place in Scholomance, a school for magically gifted (think Hogwarts but without the authority figures and less concern about one super evil wizard and more concern about all the casual little monsters waiting around to eat you). El Higgins is an incredible protagonist with a gift for the more lethal arts. She honestly spends most of her time trying not to hurt other people with her badass strength and then begrudgingly saves everyone around her. For lovers of dark academia, this book is a must.
Tumblr media
2. Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth Alright, let’s get gay. This book has everything. Historical wlw, modern setting wlw, polyamorous wlw, ghosts, a book within the book all about ladies loving ladies, bees, bisexual rep, and a very gay three-way happening in a haunted forest. The story goes back and forth between the events that followed the death of two young lovers from an all girl boarding school called Brookhaunts and what happens on the set of the 2020 film being made about all the deaths that happened a hundred years before at that same boarding school. And with all the crazy things that happen in this thriller, the least realistic thing is that half this story is happening in 2020 and there’s no COVID-19 angst. Ladies, read this and then join me in my Plain Bad Heroines club.
Tumblr media
3. Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas Okay, clearly 2020 had a dark academia theme for me. This book is short, but don’t let it fool you. There’s a lot packed into those pages. Catherine House is a alternative to college that has housed some of the most prestigious individuals in history. All they ask in return is a few years of your life being spent there. Ines comes to Catherine House with a dark past and an eagerness to find a home there. Slowly but surely, she starts to unravel the dark secrets the school has kept hidden away. Fair warning, the ending isn’t exactly happy. The story is haunting from beginning to end.
Tumblr media
4. Of Thorns and Beauty by Elle Madison and Robin D. Mahle Did not go into this one thinking I would like it. But my God, it’s addicting once you get past the first few chapters. It’s a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, but that seems like such a stretch to say. There are elements of the classic tale, but with dark, heart-breaking twists. Arranged marriage, enemies to lovers, betrayal, and a cliffhanger that will have you screaming for the sequel.
Tumblr media
5. Aurora Burning by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff This is the sequel to Aurora Rising, and it’s a LOT. I won’t go too into the plot since I don’t want to spoil the first book in the series, but The Aurora Cycle series is just fantastic. Squad 312 is the found family we all want to read. It’s sci-fi, which isn’t typically my thing, but the characters are so endearing and wild that I couldn’t stop myself from binging these two books. The end had me screaming. If you don’t like cliffhangers, this is definitely not the book for you. But anyone else who wants to suffer with me should absolutely dive in head first.
Did I miss any other incredible books of 2020? Let me know what your faves were from this year!
