Welcome to the June 2023 wrap up! I didn't expect that I would be reading so much for other characters but putting this list together made me realize I may have been whoring on the side for some other characters (potentially actors too because I can't lie those pics of Seb at the Loewe event did things to me full stop--).

The year's halfway through and I honestly can't believe how this year feels like it's flying by but also not moving fast enough because honestly I swear on my life I was just working on the 14 Days project a few weeks ago but also apparently it over four months ago?? Nothing makes sense 🥴

Although I haven't achieved any of the goals I set out for this month, I am content with the little progress I've made. Uni is almost at its peak for the semester which means that a lot of my time is focused on ensuring I pass my classes!

For Snake Oil, the second outline for act 1 ended on 4,950 words, and now I'm working on act 2. The story doesn't really follow the rules of the 3-act structure; I use these 'acts' to break down the story into smaller chunks. Once I get these outlines completed (I'm thinking of doing one more round after this), I should be able to see whether this story is more suited to serialisation, or being published as a complete novel.

Speaking of web serials - I've started doing further research on them by investing more time in familiarising myself with this form of publishing. I should probably have at least a handful of web-serials under my reading belt, particularly one that I enjoy. This way, I can make an informed decision on whether this is the path I want to go down for VESSEL. I will post my thoughts on this soon.

Romance and Rant Reviews | September 2023 Wrap-Up

Slowly pulling myself out of my recent reading slump. I’ve concluded the best way to do this is with cozy books (specifically the Veronica Speedwell Mysteries series), and romance novels.

A Dangerous Collaboration by Deanna Raybourn

Another excellent cozy mystery. I’m really loving this series, and could see myself coming back to it as a comfort reread at some point. The tension between Veronica and Stoker in this book was absolutely delicious, and the mystery was super engaging and kept me guessing. Every time I thought I’d figured it out, I’d get to the next chapter and realize I was completely wrong. Keeps me on my toes as a reader!

With You Forever by Chloe Liese

This book was so warm and sweet and adorable. (And sexy.) I loved Axel and Rooney as individuals and as a couple, and I thought conversations around autism, chronic illness, and living with invisible disabilities was handled really thoughtfully and with a lot of respect and nuance.

september is ending soon! it’s not only the month where i started watching c-dramas, but also the month where i read plenty of c-novels as well. other medias i have consumed includes manhua, manga, anime, audio drama, and fics.

among them, there are several stand-outs. lycoris recoil has cemented itself as one of my favourite anime. to be honest, it isn’t very much about its plot but the characters. i’ve enjoyed watching every single one of the characters on the screen. yes, even majima. especially majima, actually. considering its success, i believe that it will have a second season (fingers crossed!). 

i’ve enjoyed most of the c-novels i read this month, but i found myself still thinking about break-up even after days of reading it. i kept going back to the novel, reading the same paragraphs i’ve read. on the surface, it has the simple and common premise of “scum gong chasing his wife back”, and while that may be the case, the author went around it in a refreshing way. i was especially amazed at how the author managed to make me despise a certain character in the beginning only for me to root for him in the end and vice versa. 

and of course, my top favourite thing of the month is none other than love between fairy and devil. i’ve seen tweets about this drama on twitter around early august and while it was heartwarming to see people making a breakthrough in their career, i was not keen on watching dramas so i only left the tweets with a ‘like’ before moving on with my life. i’m glad that curiosity got the best of me in the end because this drama is one of the things that brings joy to my life. i haven’t been able to move on from the show and although i wish i can make some room for other medias to capture my interest as well, i don’t and never plan on abandoning it. 

in october i plan to pick up more books that are not c-novels. some of the books on my tbr are a winter’s promise, a court of thorns and roses, sorcery of thorns, and the ninth sorceress. i also plan to watch ghibli films like howl’s moving castle and arrietty, you know, to try to fill the gap after i finished watching LBFAD. there are many other medias i’d love to indulge myself in next month because i might as well drown myself in them while i’m on break and still have the opportunity to do so. here’s to hoping for a fun month!

Though my activity only started halfway through this month, I am glad that I've finally made some solid progress. It's good to see that I'm smashing through the goals I'm setting; it means that I've settled into a writing rhythm that slots in well with the rest of my routine.

I haven't completed arc 3 of Snake Oil's second outline - this is because I've underestimated how much detail I need to add. Going into it, I knew that I really needed to flesh out this section of the story. What I didn't remember is that I left this section quite bare in the first outline. What was about 6 dot points of plot has now expanded to almost 5,000 words of detailed information about scenes and dialogue - and I'm not even halfway through. I mean, I knew I needed to add more plot details to this arc, but I didn't realise I would have so many scene ideas to add this early in the writing process! By the end of this month, I expect that at least arc 3 will be complete and I'll have made significant progress in the 4th, though I don't think it's unrealistic to have the entire second outline completed by September's end.

And an exciting progress update, as mentioned in the 'noteworthy accomplishments' - I've launched the official website for VESSEL! I wasn't expecting to release it so soon, but after spending half a day redesigning the homepage, I thought, what the hell, and went for it. I feel a slight weight lifted off my shoulders, as I knew I'd have to release it some day, and for the past couple of months I wasn't happy with the way it looked (previously I had used one of WordPress' standard themes). At the moment there isn't really anything on the site, but there will be in due time. I'll start by transferring some of the information I currently have on this blog to the website and go from there.

June 2023 Wrap Up

I hit a bit of a reading rut this month, so I only tackled two books. But both books were incredible! So it balances out.

Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert

To absolutely no one’s surprise, Talia Hibbert once again hit it out of the park. I loved this book and absolutely flew through it. The characters are funny and the tension is perfect, plus there’s some awesome, non-stigmatizing rep of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Looking forward to rereading this one!

Greedy: Notes from a Bisexual Who Wants Too Much by Jen Winston

This book wasn’t what I expected, but I loved it all the same. Over the past few years I’ve discovered that I really, really enjoy memoir-adjacent books told in the form of essay collections, and this book definitely hits that sweet spot for me. The writing is quick and clever and genuinely pretty funny, while still managing to tackle some heavy and deeply uncomfortable topics. Even though I couldn’t relate to the specifics of this author’s experience of bisexuality, I felt seen nonetheless.
