Fic Recs Wrap Up - November 2022 ଘ(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭* ੈ✩‧₊˚
Chasing Dragons by The_Sinking_Ship @the-sinking-ship
Draco can think of only one way to outclass his pleat-front-khaki-wearing politician ex, and that’s by making headlines with an obvious upgrade. And who better to upstage the cheating bastard than the Saviour of the World, Harry Potter himself? Sure, Potter is a little rough around the edges in ripped jeans, a rumpled tartan shirt, and a permanent scowl. Draco reckons a haircut and a shave wouldn’t hurt, either. But Potter is also in need of a Healer willing to keep his secrets, and Draco is just the man for the job. It’s a perfectly reasonable exchange. They need only attend a couple parties arm-in-arm, smile nicely for the paparazzi, and tolerate each other long enough to convince everyone they’re smitten. In return, Draco will keep Potter alive and in one piece. But it isn’t long before Draco realises he might be in over his head, because Potter is ten tonnes of trouble packed into a leather jacket, and seems keen on hurtling himself towards death on the back of a flying motorbike. And that says nothing of Potter’s penchant for fire-breathing beasts and things that bite. Ah well, at least they’ll have some fun while it lasts. After all, Draco always did like a bit of danger. Rec Post
There’s Something About Harry by Barry_Manilows_Wardrobe
Harry Potter is just your average Parapsychologist. In conflict with his Department Head, D. Lucius Malfoy, and sometimes venturing into a paranormal world in order to help people in distress. Who just happens to be surveilled by MACUSA and the Ministry. Rec Post
Make Yourself by AnyaElizabeth, Zigster  Author: @anyaelizabethfic  Artist(s): @zigster-ao3
Harry just wants to be safe within the freshly painted walls of Grimmauld Place, with his friends around him. But when he hears Draco Malfoy has been spotted at the local soup kitchen, he can’t help but encourage a different type of stray to come under his roof. Rec Post
Two Zinnias and the Scent of Lemon by thestarryknight @the-starryknight
The Ministry didn’t turn bad overnight. Harry didn’t suddenly turn rogue either. Between covert Legilimency links and Polyjuice disguises and running and running and running, Draco has forgotten what it is like to have a safe harbor that isn’t a person. If there’s an art to fighting back, then they’ll find it hand in hand. Rec Post
Brave Though The Stars They Make Me by dwell_the_brave, puncertainty  written by @dwell-the-brave with art by @puncertainty
After the events at the end of his Sixth Year, Draco Malfoy has been kept all but prisoner in his childhood home, Malfoy Manor. Alone, terrified, and desperate for some way out, he begins to have strange dreams - dreams of Harry Potter. Are they a trick of his mind? Or are they a way to change his fate, and a chance at redemption? Rec Post
Oh God Not Again! by Sarah1281
So maybe everything didn’t work out perfectly for Harry. Still, most of his friends survived, he’d gotten married, and was about to become a father. If only he’d have stayed away from the Veil, he wouldn’t have had to go back and do everything AGAIN. Rec Post
Nor All That Glisters by sweet_s0rr0w @sweet-s0rr0w
Lonely and frustrated on house arrest, with no prospects for the future, Draco begins brewing Felix Felicis in an attempt to improve his lot. Just in the short term, of course. He isn’t a total idiot.
But before long he finds himself with a thriving business, a nice flat, some actual (albeit irritatingly Gryffindor) friends, and a very satisfying sex life. What’s more, no-one is hexing him in the street. And Harry Potter is single, and gorgeous, and giving Draco decidedly interested looks.
Stop taking the Felix? You must be joking… Rec Post
Dwelling on Dreams by The_Sinking_Ship @the-sinking-ship
Draco thought he could avoid Potter for the duration of his brief return to England. He’d stick to his schedule and be back home in Paris, where he belonged, in a few short months. No trouble at all. He had plenty to occupy him, what with the opening of the London branch of his successful apothecary, his innovative research, drinks with Pansy, a backlog of unread potions periodicals. Except Head Auror Potter is everywhere — in Draco’s chair, at his door, in his dreams. All six feet of motorbike-riding, combat-boot-wearing, sex-hair-sporting Saviour of the World packed into one unfairly fetching uniform. Potter won’t leave Draco the bloody hell alone, won’t let him breathe, let him forget, let him sleep.
Because no matter how fast Draco Malfoy runs, Harry Potter is always hot on his heels. Rec Post
Here are a few more fics I've read recently that y'all might like to check out as well! (ノ^ヮ^)ノ*:・゚✧

Witness Marks by gryffindorhearts @gryffindorhearts
No one comes to Cogg and Bell's with a working clock. After all, it’s Draco's job to repair what’s broken and put time – quite literally – back in order. When Harry Potter waltzes in a few decades after the War, red Head Auror robes flashing, Draco expected to serve as a consultant on a case. Instead, Harry offers him the broken Weasley family clock, and with it, the chance to live in the present for once.
Bonded Consort by Lomonaaeren
Nineteen years ago, the Potters betrothed their firstborn child to the firstborn Malfoy child. Eighteen years ago, Voldemort was defeated for good. Seventeen years ago, the Potters changed the contract so that their secondborn child was substituted for their firstborn. Now, Draco Malfoy is trying to work out what happened.
Blessed Are The Lambs (Do You Walk With Gabriel?) by Cannibalschism @cannibalschism
It's been eight years of this. Eight years since the tug that drew Harry like the tide pulls the earth towards the Camerlengo and Vatican City. Eight years since he'd last felt what it was to think freely and not around the wretched, awful din. Eight years since the bars of his gilded cage had slammed shut around him all while the Camerlengo spun the key on his conniving finger.
But it was today when Draco Malfoy walked into St. Peter's Basilica, looking so young as though the years had passed him by, and smelling like pennies and dead leaves.
I'll Play Your Game by JayseHasNoGrace
After quitting the Auror department at the ripe old age of twenty two, Harry Potter finds a nice, uneventful job in an apothecary. At least, it's uneventful until his old rival Draco Malfoy comes into the shop.
They strike up an unlikely friendship, which evolves into an increasingly convoluted scheme, which then snowballs spectacularly out of control into a tangle of lies and blurred lines.
They'd agreed to a fake relationship — in Harry's case, to get the wizarding world to take him off his 'perfect saviour' pedestal, and in Draco's case, just to be given a chance in wizarding society at all — but neither of them expected just how difficult that might really turn out to be. Especially when the stakes grow ever higher, and they both start falling for each other. Just a little bit.
( •ॢ◡-ॢ)-♡ I hope you enjoy these fics as much as I have! Happy reading, y’all! xoxo Carey  (◍•ᴗ•◍)♡ ✧*💜💙💚💛❤💗💖
P.S. Thank you all for 1600+ followers~ I appreciate you!

November Reading Wrap-Up
November was a great reading month for me, and I read 10 books this month, which is well above average. I read a several new releases, and continued on with a new favorite series.
1.Seasparrow by Kristin Cashore (4.5/5 stars): This is the next book of the Graceling Realms series, and follows Hava as the main character. An arctic and seafaring setting are two of my favorite things, and this book had both. I also found parts of this emotional and there was a theme of disability and motherhood. And more of the wonderful blue foxes. I felt like Cashore's writing reflected Hava's pov and mind, which was interesting to read. ya-fantasy
2.The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater (5/5 stars, audiobook): This was my annual reread of one of my all time favorites. The audiobook is superb and if you haven't read this yet, what are you waiting for? young-adult
3.Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell (3.75/5 stars): This was one of my most anticipated books of the year. This is a sci-fi set in the same universe as Winter's Orbit but in a very different place. This has do with the military, mind control, coups, and romance. mlm adult sci-fi
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4.A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger (3/5 stars): This is a middle grade book about a Lipan girl and a group of animal people from the world of spirits. More ace rep, real world issues, and a good story. middle grade
5.A Conspiracy of Kings by Megan Whalen Turner (3.5/5 stars) book 4 in the queen's thief series. Enjoyable, but not quite at the level as the previous two were. Following a different character and his development and growth. ya fantasy
6.The Atlas Paradox by Olivie Blake (4.5/5 stars): Sequel to The Atlas Six, and I found this one so entertaining and I could not put it down. I enjoyed this one more than the first book, and I eagerly anticipate the third. adult fantasy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
7.Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance (1.5/5 stars) Admittedly, I sort of hate read this. Which I never do, but I decided to read this mainly because I read What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia by Elizabeth Catte over the summer, and Catte's book is a response to this. I wanted to have a better understanding of why books like Hillbilly Elegy are detrimental to the people actively doing work in the Appalachian region and beyond. memior
8. Sistersong by Lucy Holland (4.5/5 stars): I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would at first. Lovely medieval Briton world, trans main character, pagan magic, and external threats. I had a good time reading this one. historical fantasy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9.Thick As Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner (5/5 stars) Book 5 of the queen's thief series. My favorite so far, and I was thoroughly wowed by this book. I love the two main characters so much and I was rooting for them and their relationship the whole time. Features a travel narrative and epic poetry, so of course I loved it. ya fantasy
10.The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye by A.S. Byatt (3/5 stars): This is a collection of fairy tale short stories by one of my favorite authors. Some of the stories I liked more than others. literary fiction

December reading plans:
queen's thief 6
Moon Witch, Spider King (dark star #2) by Marlon James

Books of 2022 - November and December
Tumblr media
Oops posted this the wrong way around as my year at a glance. Ahh well! I read more digitally than I did physically due to travelling a lot to and from school, but here's what I read.
November:
First Love by Ivan Turgenev - most first Turgenev, I enjoyed it. It was a bit predictable but I liked the realism and surprising relatability of this one. I'm intrigued to read more by him.
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman - I was a little bit disappointed by this one, I think the hype around this one set it up for a fall. It's an interesting look into a woman's severe mental illness and the way everyone around her, especially her husband, belittles and exacerbates her condition. I read it as a sincere attempt to help that went wrong due to a lack of knowledge about postnatal depression (and possibly another condition, I'm not going to try diagnosis!), but the early feminist message was a interesting. I just didn't connect with this one as much as others have.
Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay - I loved this book! I took it slowly because I was enthralled by the setting and characters, so much so that I didn't want to leave! I can't say too much as it's the second book in a duology but it was fabulous. One of Kay's best works that I've read (I like Tigana a bit more) and it enhanced Sailing to Sarantium which I struggled with a bit last year.
December:
Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare - I was feeling down at the start of December, so I reread one of my favourite Shakespearean comedies. I had a great time and I still say Beatrice and Benedick are Shakespeare's best couple (and Beatrice is my favourite heroine!)
Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott - I had so much fun with this one, and I was pleasantly surprised. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about Ivanhoe, and I completely understand why, but I personally loved it. I'm a sucker for 19th century medievalism - I like their version of chivalrous knights and merry England, I have an inner romantic deep down. However, I won't say I recommend it for everyone - there's an attempt at sympathetic Jewish characters but it's clumsy and in places as negatively stereotyped as you would expect from the 19th c., and it's very verbose. I loved it but I can see a lot of people struggling with it.
My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell - I still don't know why I read this... I don't want to go into what it's about due to the content being so dark (check trigger warnings!) but I found it only half successful. A lot of my problems came from the language - it's SO American. There is a reason I rarely read American contemporary works - I struggle with immersion but to a linguistic gap, and yes there IS a difference. There's certain phrases that feel wrong to me, references that pull me out of the book, and life experiences I don't share. It makes it difficult for me to relate to the story and that's what happened here. I ended up criticising the writing more than the content. I do think Russell handled the subject matter relatively well, it's one of the more sensitive examinations that I've seen. However, that last chapter was a mistake. Firstly, it wasn't long enough to show Vanessa on the first steps to "recovery", everything happened too fast and it was unbelievable. Secondly, the authorial moralising voice came on too strong. Vanessa stopped being Vanessa, instead she was a mouthpiece for Russell to tell us about the Me Too movement, and I hated it! We're intelligent enough to get the point of the book for ourselves, stop! Otherwise, it was alright. Again, I can't recommend this one and do check trigger warnings if you're interested.
I am still reading The Red and the Black by Stendhal and Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson, which is well over an additional 1000 pages between them but neither is finished. Guess they'll be the first books of 2023 then!

One, Two, Buckle My Shoe/Agatha Christie (Hercule Poirot #20) (adult mystery)-Hercule Poirot doesn’t like going to the dentist. That doesn’t mean he likes his dentist turning up dead. The inquest decides it was suicide, but Poirot has a hunch...

November 2022 Monthly Reading Wrap-Up
The end of November? Already? You mean there’s only two weeks left in my semester? Somehow, even without final papers to write, I still feel like I have soooo much to do. (Possibly I would have less to do if I focused a little more on my schoolwork and read a little less, but that’s just not how these things go.) This month I finished 11 books and almost 4,000 pages. They were:
Leisure Reading:
Into the Drowning Deep (Into the Drowning Deep #1) by Mira Grant- 4.25/5 stars
Secrets Beyond the Door: The Story of Bluebeard and His Wives by Maria Tatar
Bloodmarked (Legendborn #2) by Tracy Deonn- 5/5 stars
Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space by Amanda Leduc- 4.5/5 stars
Book of Night (Book of Night #1) by Holly Black- 3.25/5 stars
Forging Silver into Stars (Forging Silver into Stars #1) by Brigid Kemmerer- 4/5 stars
Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher- 4.25/5 stars
Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel- 4.5/5 stars
Academic Reading:
Homer, Poet of the Iliad by Mark Edwards
The Athenian Woman: An Iconographic Handbook by Sian Lewis
Interpreting the Images of Greek Myths: An Introduction by Klaus Junker
Lots of good reads this month--hard to pick a favorite! But I am going to go with Bloodmarked. Though its start was a little slower for me than Legendborn, it was compulsively readable, immensely thoughtful, and had a great ending.
Currently Reading: Classic Ghost Stories collection, The Arena of Satire by David Larmour, and The Book of Gothel by Mary McMyne

November 2022 Writing Wrap Up
Words Written:  55,795 words. Hey, it’s NaNoWriMo - it’s gonna be more than average. I’d like to mention here how I love that I had a plan for NaNoWriMo and that... Promptly (heh) went out of the window. Well, half of it did. Sometimes things just work out that way! Things I’ve Worked On: ~ the OTPtober Prompts. (Mini Masterlist) Most of them, I think. I don’t think I managed to get that many done in October, but I did publish them all this month too. They were fun! ~ the (new) Vampire AU This includes bare-bones brainstorming and fleshed out writing. This is Robin’s “fault” - I think I was having a bad day and she distracted me with a “hey, imagine this...” and my brain latched onto the idea and went with it. ~ a scene from the Danger Days AU fic I have going on. Sometimes a picture will spiral a scene that won’t leave you alone until you write it. ~ possibly a handful of words of bare-bones brainstorming for other projects. December Plans: ~ go back to my 500 a day. I cannot and will not do insane numbers every month. I want to keep the habit, I don’t want to exhust myself! Or worse, I don’t wanna burn myself out. ~ write what I want. Simple really. If I don’t want to be writing something, it’s not fun and writing is my hobby. Hobbies are for fun.

The Klamath River’s salmon population has declined due to myriad factors, but the biggest culprit is believed to be a series of dams built along the river from 1918 to 1962, cutting off fish migration routes.
Now, after decades of Indigenous advocacy, four of the structures are being demolished as part of the largest dam removal project in United States history. In November, crews finished removing the first of the four dams as part of a push to restore 644 kilometres (400 miles) of fish habitat.
“Dam removal is the largest single step that we can take to restore the Klamath River ecosystem,” [Barry McCovey, a member of the Yurok Tribe and director of tribal fisheries,] told Al Jazeera. “We’re going to see benefits to the ecosystem and then, in turn, to the fishery for decades and decades to come.” ...
A ‘watershed moment’
Four years later, [after a catastrophic fish die-off in 2002,] in 2006, the licence for the hydroelectric dams expired. That created an opportunity, according to Mark Bransom, CEO of the Klamath River Renewal Corporation (KRRC), a nonprofit founded to oversee the dam removals.
Standards for protecting fisheries had increased since the initial license was issued, and the utility company responsible for the dams faced a choice. It could either upgrade the dams at an economic loss or enter into a settlement agreement that would allow it to operate the dams until they could be demolished.
“A big driver was the economics — knowing that they would have to modify these facilities to bring them up to modern environmental standards,” Bransom explained. “And the economics just didn’t pencil out.”
The utility company chose the settlement. In 2016, the KRRC was created to work with the state governments of California and Oregon to demolish the dams.
Final approval for the deal came in 2022, in what Bransom remembers as a “watershed moment”.
Regulators at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) voted unanimously to tear down the dams, citing the benefit to the environment as well as to Indigenous tribes...
Tears of joy
Destruction of the first dam — the smallest, known as Copco 2 — began in June, with heavy machinery like excavators tearing down its concrete walls.
[Amy Cordalis, a Yurok Tribe member, fisherwoman and lawyer for the tribe,] was present for the start of the destruction. Bransom had invited her and fellow KRRC board members to visit the bend in the Klamath River where Copco 2 was being removed. She remembers taking his hand as they walked along a gravel ridge towards the water, a vein of blue nestled amid rolling hills.
“And then, there it was,” Cordalis said. “Or there it wasn’t. The dam was gone.”
For the first time in a century, water flowed freely through that area of the river. Cordalis felt like she was seeing her homelands restored.
Tears of joy began to roll down her cheeks. “I just cried so hard because it was so beautiful.”
The experience was also “profound” for Bransom. “It really was literally a jolt of energy that flowed through us,” he said, calling the visit “perhaps one of the most touching, most moving moments in my entire life”.
Demolition on Copco 2 was completed in November, with work starting on the other three dams. The entire project is scheduled to wrap in late 2024.
[A resilient river]
But experts like McCovey say major hurdles remain to restoring the river’s historic salmon population.
Climate change is warming the water. Wildfires and flash floods are contaminating the river with debris. And tiny particles from rubber vehicle tires are washing off roadways and into waterways, where their chemicals can kill fish within hours.
McCovey, however, is optimistic that the dam demolitions will help the river become more resilient.
“Dam removal is one of the best things we can do to help the Klamath basin be ready to handle climate change,” McCovey explained. He added that the river’s uninterrupted flow will also help flush out sediment and improve water quality.
The removal project is not the solution to all the river’s woes, but McCovey believes it’s a start — a step towards rebuilding the reciprocal relationship between the waterway and the Indigenous people who rely on it.
“We do a little bit of work, and then we start to see more salmon, and then maybe we get to eat more salmon, and that starts to help our people heal a little bit,” McCovey said. “And once we start healing, then we’re in a place where we can start to help the ecosystem a little bit more.”"

Dancing out of November 2022
Dancing out of November 2022
You might be seeing things a bit differently on the blog. On a random whim I decided to change the theme of my blog on December 2nd. I have had the button theme for a long time and I decided it was time for something new for 2023. I might change a bit of the graphics too in the future, who knows. But I certainly don’t have the time now. And they still work. Other than that the month was not great…
