When I first read the summary, I thought to myself that I'll be happy as long as it isn't as trite as Legends and Lattes. Boy was that a low bar I set.

I was on the ride with draco the whole time, even when I was screaming at him to not make that giant delusional mistake. But the knot in my stomach kept getting tighter and tighter and the entire first half of the book felt like watching a train crash in real time.

And then everything changed. It was slow, and syrupy, and confused, and it hurt. Not a single character was safe; there were difficult choices about morality and justice and putting in the work and making reparations and heartbreak all around, and then there was healing. It was still complicated, but we were all okay.

This story is clearly a labor of love. It's impeccably paced and intricately detailed (also! The chapter header drawing thingies! Ah!). It's about addiction and sobriety and free will and love. It's about how love can hurt and it can heal, and this fic did both for me.

Well, thanks for asking, imaginary audience – as a matter of fact, I did indeed read a lot of Drarry fics this year. A fucking horrendous number of Drarry fics, in fact.

Below the cut are some of my favourites that were published in 2023, arranged by word count.

But first, a note: there is truly an overwhelming amount of talent in this fandom and this list only scratches the surface. These fics all gave me something that I was looking for and were my favourites for a number of different reasons. I hope you can find something new to love here (or reconnect with an old favourite), and that you enjoy these stories as much as I did!

Harry's hand lingered a little longer on the scarf, even after Draco had released his wrist. He wanted to know everything Draco knew, so he asked,

Harry nodded and returned to his shirt, pulling it off with one hand while keeping the other on Draco's face to make sure he didn't remove the scarf.

"I won't take it off, I promise," Draco whispered.

For some reason, it was one of the few promises Harry knew he could trust. He withdrew his hand from the scarf. His T-shirt was on the floor, and now they were both exposed only to each other's touch.

Draco readjusted his stance. He stepped forward and set both feet firmly on the ground in front of Harry. “You want to know why I hate you?” he breathed viperously. “I hate you, Potter, because you can do no wrong according to Professor Dumbledore. I hate how that stupid scar of yours commands the crowds wherever you go—and I hate how you’re always the center of attention—and that you ever had the nerve to say no to me. I hate how bright and green your beautiful eyes are, and I hate the blank look on your face whenever you look at me like that…”

Stunned by the confusion of words he had just heard, Harry worked his mouth on a soundless question. When he recovered his voice, he managed to say, “Malfoy… what do my beautiful eyes have to do with anything?”

I also thought that, by your own admission, you were fucking it up, so I’d best leave you to it.” “It’s … certainly something to do with fucking,” Harry said, rather weakly. Malfoy’s eyes widened, then quickly narrowed. “Are you trying to solicit me for sex, Potter?” “Um … I won’t pay you?” “What the fuck.” Harry decides that it’s high time to lose his virginity, and figures that asking Malfoy is his best option. He’s fit, he won’t go to the papers, and he’ll be fine with Harry’s ‘no emotional attachment’ plan. Surely nothing could go wrong there.

When The Fire Is Out

For @drarrymicrofic prompt: embers.

Harry knows his back will be killing him tomorrow. Lying on the floor this long cannot be good for him. Plus his arm is starting to tingle where Draco's head currently rests, slightly cutting off blood flow. Harry wants to move it, but he can't bear the thought of Draco's head lying on the floor, or worse, Harry accidentally waking him up.

He curls into Draco instead, careful not to jostle him, and eyes the glowing embers in the fireplace. When the fire is out, Harry thinks as his eyes fall shut, I'll take us upstairs.

Harry wakes the next morning, still on the floor in front of the fireplace, back aching. He looks at Draco, messy-haired and clinging to Harry in his sleep, and smiles before falling back asleep.

Draco’s breath gets knocked out of him as Harry slides in, agonisingly slow, one hand on Draco’s arse cheek to keep him open for him and the other grasping Draco’s hand.

“Too fast?” Harry pants, pressing his forehead against Draco’s shoulder in an attempt to keep himself steady.

Draco only whines, nearly fucking himself on Harry out of pure desperation.

Harry watches himself disappear inside Draco’s body for a moment, relishing the show Draco has decided to perform for him. Until it entirely becomes too much for the both of them, and Harry decides to finally fuck Draco properly, gripping his hips with both of his hands.

Draco turns his head, unconcerned about the odd angle, as Harry leans in and moans into Draco’s open mouth.

Nothing has ever felt more like coming home.
