June 5 2023 Just finished reading a book about a trans guy and it has some relatable quotes I want to share with you. The book is called Between Perfect and Real:
Maybe my gender is tangled-up headphones.
‘My chest feels like it belongs to someone else. When you touch it, I remember it’s mine. And that sucks.’
It’s me versus the binder in a wrestling match to the death.
‘It is like (…) [my body] it’s a piece of clothing that shrank in the dryer. It’s not terrible most of the time, but it’s weird.

Book #46 - Between Perfect And Real by Ray Stoeve
(first time read, jumbled, less coherent than probably ideal thoughts)
I read this book in two smaller and one bigger chunk, and only when alone. I... I just couldn't stop reading it. And the only thing that made me put it down was... well, having company? As a trans guy myself, one with some egg-shell still stuck to him, I just couldn't read this with other people around, because I wasn't ready to feel so seen around people who didn't, yet.
But I felt seen. Reading this felt reassuring and motivating and dreamlike all at once, but most of all it felt like someone pointing at me and saying "I know exactly who you are and what I see is totally rad" and... yeah!
This post is very short because I can't really say anything else? Just....
Reading this felt good in the way being "mistaken" for a guy by the cashier feels good. Like hearing the word "brother" and knowing it's referring to me feels good.
I need literally everyone to read this book.

If you liked Loveless by Alice Oseman, try Arden Grey by Ray Stoeve
They both include:
characters learning they are asexual
the struggles of maintaining friendships as new experiences come along
making new friends through hobby and special interest clubs
a broader cast of queer characters

"The jukebox fills the silence with a terrible old rock song from the early 2000s."

Do you have any recs for trans self-discovery stories? Where the protagonist starts the book thinking they’re cis and realizes they’re trans during the plot. I didn’t realize I was a man until I was 19, so I find stories about trans people who haven’t always known very comforting!
We're still talking high school, but three YAs that do this are Between Perfect and Real by Ray Stoeve, Birthday by Meredith Russo, and Sasha Masha by Agnes Borinsky. In adult, definitely try Bellies by Nicola Dinan, and I don't think this is spoilery because though it's not in the blurb, the book is classified as LGBT/Transgender - keep an eye out for All Things Seen and Unseen by RJ McDaniel. (It's Horror, so couldn't say if it'd be comforting, but! Do read the TWs.) (It's possible the upcoming Shae by Mesha Maren fits this as well? I haven't read it yet, so I don't know when the realization happens, but certainly the transition is later.)
