Review: Pageboy by Elliot Page Rating: 3/5
This was a brutal read and not just in the ways I was expecting. I was prepared for Elliot Page to talk about the queerphobia and misogyny that he experienced growing up and going through Hollywood. But I wasn't ready for the brutal mistreatment he faced almost everywhere he turned. He doesn't pull punches as he describes it, or the mental health struggles that he experienced as a result. It was hard to read.
I also struggled a lot with the structure of the memoir. I found it hard to figure out what events happened in what order, where Page was at emotionally. And the tangents into aspects of local history weren't always especially interesting. But Page does write with a simple, straight-forward voice that makes wading through this emotional book a little easier. Even though the subject matter is sometimes hard to swallow, the writing never is.
If you've ever been interested in Elliot Page's career or his journey as a queer person, you'll find something to enjoy here, just please heed the content warnings because light reading this is not.

I know tumblr basically has it's own tag culture that's different from like... typical social media, but just a casual reminder that I made a hashtag #TransBooks365 that's all about sharing love for stories by and about trans people. It's a happy little tag that can make for a very nice break from the tragedy of the news cycle and can be very useful if you want to read more trans stories but don't know where to find them.
It's not as active over here as on Twitter/Instagram/Bluesky, but please share it and use it if you have trans books you want to share or if you're looking for good recommendations. There are already some excellent lists in the tag!
Also, just some helpful tidbits but:
The tag is open to all trans stories, even if they aren't technically "books". Feel free to include short stories, comics, interactive fiction, etc. We're using "book" about as loosely as possible.
The tag is for all stories BY trans people or STARRING trans people, so if it's got a trans MC but it was written by a cis author [as far as we know], that's fine! If it's got a cis main character but the author is trans, still fine!
Nonbinary/GNC people/characters are welcome and should only be disincluded if they personally state they are NOT trans. It's opt out rather than opt in (because these fall under the trans umbrella unless an individual doesn't want to be included in the community).
It's really just a happy/fun tag, so if you aren't sure if an author is out or whatever, please just leave the book out of your recommendation list. Better safe than sorry, and we don't want to risk outing anyone.
PLEASE DON'T DEBATE WHETHER OR NOT AN AUTHOR IS TRANS ENOUGH TO BE INCLUDED. WE DON'T DEBATE AUTHORS' IDENTITIES HERE!
Anyway, yes, please share and use the tag if it so interests you, and please continue to read and support trans stories <3

Expert on queer gothic and queer vampires @ghostpoetics, author of A FLAME IN THE NIGHT, has the following to say about The Fealty of Monsters:
“With the dark gothic fantasy sensibilities of Berserk, Castlevania, and Bloodborne, Ladz’s first volume of THE FEALTY OF MONSTERS is thrilling, gory, and queer as hell. A must-read.”
It's Valentine's Day and I need to shout out their forthcoming F/F/F vampire romance, UNHOLY WITH EYES LIKE WOLVES, coming out April 16, 2024, which I called "indulgent, depraved, and sanguine"
It's Carmilla. It's Elizabeth Bathory. It's so much fun.
The Fealty of Monsters comes out on March 12, 2024

12/20 Queer Book Draw Challenge: Café con Lychee by @emeryleewho
[ID: a drawing of Gabi and Theo in pastels surrounded by a deep purple frame. One of Gabi's arms is around Theo's shoulder while he gestures enthusiastically. His face is open and excited. Theo smiles back at him, an eyebrow lifted slightly. Around them, a cup with a "Café con Lychee" logo pours a stylized wave of coffee with lychee jelly. End ID]

Currently reading 'Hell followed with us' and I was actually so shocked of how similar my mind is to Nicks. I have known for a year and a half now that I am autistic but damn, this is probably the most "aha" moment I've ever had. This felt so personal to me that I currently just sit on my bed and stair at the wall and write this to make it make sense. Like, damn, this feels like Andrew Joseph White just copyrighted my brain. Honestly, if I ever get asked again how my autism works, I'll just hand them my notes on this.

Happy #TransBooks365 day!!! This hashtag was created by Emery Lee to remind folks to read & recommend books by and about trans people all year long. Not just June, not just when anti-trans legislation is in the news, all year!
This time I wanted to focus on books by and about trans women. This is one area where traditional publishing could DEFINITELY use some growth. I ADORED all these authors' books. (I also adore mine, I guess, although I debated over whether to include CHEF'S CHOICE or not. But Luna is trans and she's great so here she is!)
The Books: ❤️WRATH GODDESS SING by Maya Deane ❤️SUMMER FUN by Jeanne Thornton ❤️VICTORIES GREATER THAN DEATH (#1 in a trilogy) by Charlie Jane Anders ❤️FOR THE LOVE OF APRIL FRENCH by Penny Aimes (read as an eBook hence no physical copy in the 2nd slide) ❤️CHEF'S CHOICE by me : )
I've said this before on panels, so I want to acknowledge that all the books I've listed here are by white people afaik. There aren't enough publishing deals being offered to writers of color (period, but ESPECIALLY those writing trans stories, ESPECIALLY trans women). So, like, please give me those stories, y'all??
😘 Please tell me what trans book you're reading or have read recently! I love to hear about them!!!

I'm just so gods damn heartbroken today

It’s March 20th which means it’s day 1 of the #transrightsreadathon Excited to hopefully read Out of the Blue by Jason June and The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes over the course of this readathon as I’ve had them in my physical tbr for a while! Also excited for my kindle options (on the second slide)! If somehow I finish all those (I’ve been reading pretty slow recently so it’ll be a toss up) I’m planning to do a reread of Café con Lychee by Emery Lee and of The Tea Dragon Collection from K. O’Neill. Excited about all the other books that people have been talking about leading up to this readathon and have been adding soooo many books to my tbr! Other than books I’m hoping to share accounts/posts that have a donation goal for the readathon! You should check out @sim_bookstagrams_badly, the one who started the whole idea of the readathon and has been/is still fundraising! Also: Rin Chupeco has been saying and doing a lot of racist (especially anti-Black) things on Twitter, including being proud of using the n-word in the book they’re currently writing. I won’t support them or their books any longer.

I've never shared this on Tumblr before, but I host this regular event called #TransBooks365 where people are encouraged to post about their favorite books by &/or about trans people! The idea is just to talk about or post pictures of the trans books you love and use the hashtag so people can find recommendations and also share love for their favorite trans books.
This whole event started as a counter to the way that people typically only recommend trans books as a response to massive amounts of transphobia or transphobic violence, and in the year and a half since I started it, I've been seeing so much more appreciation for trans books, and that makes me really happy so I wanted to share it here.
I know tag games and events don't work quite the same here as they do on Instagram and Twitter since posts have a lot more longevity, so feel free to start sharing your recs whenever you see this, but also please spread the word about this event and the hashtag, and if you're also on Instagram, consider joining us for an instagram live that day on my account (@/EmeryLeeBooks) where I'll be chatting with one of my favorite trans authors about our favorite trans books!

One of the most skilled writers I've had the pleasure of reading and working with, @jonphaedrus provides the best summary of my forthcoming gothic horror political fantasy:
“you are the proletariat in petrograd for the october revolution. you go to kill the czar but—oh wait! the vampire."
The way he enjoyed how fun and gross this book makes me feel like I did good with this story

On Monday, August 30, author Emery Lee is organizing an event to promote books by trans authors: #TransBooks365
Tumblr media
[Tweet, by Emery Lee: Okay, y'all, I need your help. On Monday August 30th, I want everyone to tweet about their favorite trans books/authors with #TransBooks365 . Read the thread for more info & if you're seeing this, please Retweet! ]
So most of y'all are already aware that trans authors pretty much only get significant support in response to transphobia. This is exhausting and makes the promo feel awful.
I want to give trans authors a chance to see their books blow up in a way that isn't bigotry-centered.
So the project is simple: on one day, people tweet about their favorite trans books/authors and use the hashtag #TransBooks365 because trans books are worthwhile all year, not just as a bigotry response.
Feel free to use the hashtag across platforms too for more visibility.
It’s a way to uplift trans authors who deserve more attention - or who just wrote books you love and want more people to read!

Summer Fun by Jeanne Thornton is a great book and very powerful. It’s finely crafted, expansive yet taut, and, well, the sheer amount of character, theme, and history that Thornton managed to hold in her head while writing and then convey on the page is incredible. A lesser author couldn’t have done it. And the emotions she makes the reader feel? The way she writes hope and pain and loneliness? The things she forces the reader to consider, and the ways she does that? Equally impressive!
It’s not a book for everyone, though, and if I’d known how affecting it would be, I’d have picked a different time to read it because there’s definitely a certain headspace required and I didn’t quite have it. Basically, Thornton does not sugarcoat the lives of trans women, either in the past or the present, and she presses those realities on her readers. There’s abuse and trans-misogyny and substance abuse, for instance, and several trans characters are working through (what I read as) internalized trans-misogyny as well. The prose is also dense and dark, and Thornton doesn’t hold readers’ hands through it or her messages. You have to pay attention to this book and you can’t expect easy answers.
The plot, you ask? An elevator pitch might be, “A trans woman in New Mexico writes letters to her favourite musician”, but that compresses so much. For one thing, the lines blur quickly. How much of the detail of the musician’s life is true, and how much is fannish re-creation? How much does the writer’s outlook colour everything? What is the goal of the letters? Really, Summer Fun is about hope and loss and longing, about finding yourself and learning to be comfortable in your skin, and about connection and the power of music and the many ways trans women live in the world.
It’s a great book, as I said. It stirs emotions and asks hard questions. Thornton’s won Lambdas and it’s easy to see why. It’s powerful and vivid and affecting, a worthy book for any queer-positive TBR. It is not the breezy summer read I expected (my bad there), but I’m very glad to have read it.
