I’ve seen a bit of discourse on Twitter, with people calling Nene toxic because she shot 3 Cupid arrows into a sleeping Hanako. It’s… wild. Imagine hating the main character of the entire manga 💀 I could make an essay on why she’s not toxic, but instead I’m gonna go down the other route and say:

If you think Nene is toxic, then oh boy do I have some news for you about Hanako!!

Let’s list Hanako’s toxic behaviours:

Tricked a young girl into swallowing a mermaid scale so he could make her destroy yorishiro’s

Literally admits himself that he didn't plan to care about Nene and was just using her until he caught feelings

Heavily flirted with Nene until she became confused about his intentions, which resulted in her crying

Threatens to turn Nene into a fish when she doesn't bend to his will

Intentionally keeps Nene's lifespan a secret from her, and only reveals it to her after she confronts him about it

Tries to harm Nene's best friend twice! Despite knowing full well she would disapprove (for those who may not remember, along with literally trying to kill her in Nene's stead, Hanako attempts to drop a chandelier on Aoi to lure out the clock keeper he was hunting)

Hanako quite literally locks Nene away, against her own freewill, because he decided it was the best way to save her (despite how much she didn't want to stay there)

Becomes overly possessive and jealous about Nene, to the point that he doesn't even like the idea of anybody saving her life other than himself (there's so many examples I can give on Hanako's possessiveness alone, but just know it's a pretty toxic trait of his)

Constantly thinks he knows what's best for Nene and will act on that interest, never consulting her on anything even though it's about her

Refuses to entertain Nene's desire to die and stay with him, even Tsukasa says he was selfish for that one

Do I even need to mention chapter 71? The entire severance? How Hanako, after realising he wouldn't be able to make Nene forget, decides to try and make her full on hate him and acts cruel towards her Honestly I am certain I am forgetting things, but this is a list of Hanako's toxic behaviors from the top of my head. He isn't innocent by any means!! And sure, I admit Nene has flaws and that's okay, but if you're going to say she's toxic then I'm sorry but you have to include Hanako too because he's far worse. And btw this is just Hanako's toxic behaviors towards Nene, she actually gets off easy, because everyone else gets it far worse from him. Like? Tsukasa anyone?? Murdered younger brother who was abandoned for 2 decades?? The hypocrisy runs deep.

and Kusuo is way 'better' than kusuke( in every single thing)

the younger sib surpasses the older, but shun knew better and didn't take it too personal, yea it kinda sucks bc toki can fight pretty well and I can't, but oh well he's still my little brother

the thing with things like abuse and noncon in fiction is I would never ever care if someone does not like want to focus on it or loves a character regardless of how problematic they are or even just doesn't focus on that at all. but when people literally cannot recognise the behaviours themselves and take issues with others doing it, that's when it terrifies me. and I think that's much more along the lines of where fiction impacts reality for these types of themes rather than x person enjoys writing about y evil topic.

The Overview

Affection Game contains a small deck of cards and guidelines through the mechanics of intentional conversations.

By following the steps, you will:

thoughtfully invite people to meet with you

create a space that is comfortable for you and your companion(s)

choose cards for each session based on your levels of comfort with each other

practice your listening skills so everyone at the table feels considered

share what you appreciated learning about your companion(s)

Why did I make this game?

The condensed version is: I reunited with someone very dear to me, and when we decided to start a relationship together I realized... wow I am bad at communicating my feelings. Emotionally constipated, if you will. Great at performing, but bad at actually revealing what is underneath all my armor and costumes.

My partner and I both make games, so it made sense to develop a card game for us to communicate through.

Affection Game has grown with that relationship and my own personal development since 2017, all the way until mid-2022 when I was finally satisfied by how I worded the prompts. By that point, I realized my communication issues stemmed from anxiety, and I knew I needed these cards to help me overcome my fear in order to advocate for my needs and speak about my insecurities.

So yeah! The game says “You Win With Vulnerability” in the physical box art, and it rings true. Speaking up for my needs and opening up to navigating differences in a relationship with kindness really helped my relationship survive a lot of my historic bad habits.

A word of caution!

Full disclosure: the game by itself doesn’t make relationships better.

You and whoever you invite to your table must have the intention to be there for each other as both separate parts and pieces that make up a sum. All must be willing to navigate difficulties and celebrate strengths together. And you ultimately should make improvements that feel good for yourselves and each other.

I will always be anxious and have insecurities, but I can find ways to focus more on the fondness I have for my long-term partner. I can use those kinder feelings to fuel how I talk about my needs and insecurities.

Basically: your game sessions will only be as good as the energy you and other people bring to them.

I don’t know how I’ve got onto anti-billy posts (I mean I do know, because they constantly occupy his fucking tag and obsess over everyone who likes him) but they are absolutely fucking vile. I feel like I should clean my eyes with a bleach for the amount of bullying and hateful behaviour they display. With the way they act you would think that Billy is comparable to fucking H*tler, not to mention the jabs at how other fans are ‘clearly’ racists and abusive because they like his character. Or how they lack media literacy? Is it me, or does that make no fucking sense? As far as I’m aware liking Hannibal doesn’t make you a human flesh connoisseur, liking Joker doesn’t make you a fucking crazy murderer clown, and liking Loki doesn’t make you a semi-genocidal demi-god. It’s fucking fiction, it doesn’t exist, liking someone doesn’t translate to being like that fucking person (it really should be a general motto of this fandom, because people forget or don’t understand that simple stupid fact).

Both of these examples just scream lack of media literacy, if not to go as far as to say lack of critical thinking skills. “Main character you are supposed to like” - so basically we are taking everything surface level, no deeper thoughts, no nothing? Just blindly guided by who you are supposed to like and who you are not supposed to like because show told you to do that?(even though it didn’t actually tell you shit, but go off) Are you able to form a single opinion that comes from your own thought process or do you just do everything someone else tells you to do?

Not to mention, fireworks and applause for a teenage, abused character to die a gruesome death after being literally mentally tortured and controlled by an inter-dimensional monster. You should get a Nobel Peace Price for your clear ability to empathise with anyone (I know, I know, you were not told to do that, it’s hard to form your own critical opinions). Just go around bullying an extremely fucking safe part of the fandom that does nothing wrong to anyone, and just posts their silly little stories and concept arts and protects other characters that are being bullied by this kind of toxic ST fans.
