fighting for my life on duolingo i finished first place last week with like 400 XP and I went to the next league. they put me in one with more active people because of it.

i’m clinging to second place haggard and covered in blood behind someone who. when i checked like 3 hours ago they had 1100 something. I’ve just checked. they are now at 1557. I have 586. I am clinging here by my fingertips. I will not be moved. next week will probably be hell on earth but by god i am stubborn this week and i will Not Be Moved. i won’t get first but i can damn well try to outrun the guy in third.

I don't think "Top 1%" is entirely earned on my account; I suspect that tier's easier to get into when you're a paid user like I am. Plus, while I tested into the beginner level, I did study Spanish for a decade and Latin for three years, so I had a leg up.

Still, I'm willing to show it off. And it is true that I'm becoming more capable of reading written Italian, and I'm starting to be able to follow spoken Italian. I can at least discern words even if I can't always translate them on the fly, and I can tell when I'm watching an Italian speaker subtitled in English where the English translation is inelegant or not strictly accurate.

It's actually a great way to improve, I think -- I watch all the pregame and postgame interviews for AS Roma, which are mainly conducted in Italian (at a variety of skill levels based on the player) but subbed in English. I was charmed to be able to follow the other day when Mourinho -- who is fluent but not a native speaker -- had a little conversational aside with one of the journalists. He was talking about how "a coach isn't supposed to be in heaven or hell" but he wasn't sure of the word for hell (and you a devout Catholic, Mou!) so he said "nè in paradiso, nè in, ah...inferno se dice, no?" I actually understood without consciously translating that he was saying "not heaven, not, uh...'inferno' is how you say it, no?" to which the journalist replied yes. It's been cool to learn a language where for once I wasn't just being whipped through conjugations and declensions endlessly, where I'm getting to watch actual humans speak the language in non-didactic ways.

Gonna be a while before I understand Edo Bove, though. I don't know if he's got a thick Roman accent or if that's just how he talks but boy doesn't seem to say the endings of any given word. I guess you don't need to when you're that good at footie, though.

Whether you’re cursing in your native language or your words just come out with a strong accent, (and even if your frustration is directed towards him) he can’t help but be most extremely ‘a little’ distracted at how pretty and beautiful and sexy charming you sound and look right now.

Says the bad word in your language “$&@#?”, waiting you to tell him what it means.

Just says the bad word confused (“‘$&@#?’ Hm?”) because he never heard you say it before.

Says “Yes babe” a comical 1 second after, getting you to giggle a bit. (They only say it if your frustration is not directed at them.)

Oikawa, Atsumu, Osamu, Matsukawa, Tanaka, Aran, Bokuto, Kenma, Iwaizumi, Nishinoya, Suna, Kuroo (says it in the car after you tell him off for driving too fast/ slow)

Is really quietly observing you with affection in his eyes and a tiny smile as you cuss out a trivial misfortune.

Suna, Kenma, Oikawa, Iwaizumi, Akaashi

Tries to be lowkey about this feeling of being absolutely enamoured but his face doesn’t look lowkey about it (it’s definitely the eyes and the little uptightness to his lips)

Yaku, Atsumu, Aran, Asahi (runs to his translator app), Tendou, Nishinoya, Sakusa, Sugawara, Daichi (who also does the professional husband chuckle), Tanaka, Tendou, Nishinoya

The idiot just says the most irrelevant phrases he learnt on duolingo i.e. ‘The horse is eating rice’ when he runs out of things to say to you while he’s driving, or in response to something you said that he didn’t understand.

Atsumu (you will never have peace, says it to Osamu too), Kuroo (says it when the traffic lights turn green to show approval), Nishinoya, Tendou, Tanaka, Asahi (just as a joke, he’s a duolingo pro), Yaku, Sugawara, Kenma (caressing your head while you’re resting on top of him in bed, says it randomly to see if he can make you giggle), Suna (the phrase is under your contact’s info on his phone, please explain to him it’s not appropriate especially as your his emergency contact), Bokuto, Aran (does his duolingo during work break and sends you screenshots of the best silly phrases with the added text “When can I use this?”), Sakusa (you’re the one bothering him ever since you saw him writing the phrase with the word blocks on duolingo)

+ Once texted you ‘the horse is eating rice’ in your language , then attached was a photo of his pet eating some rice that fell on the floor. Another time it’s a photo of his best friend eating rice.

Osamu, Kenma, Sakusa, Suna, Iwaizumi, Yaku, Sugawara

Quiet and listening. Will at a later time try his best to repeat what you said into his phone’s audio translator.

A Mediocre Date?

After the marriage between Yugo and Amalia, of course they’d want to spend all their time together, though this desire is almost unattainable, due to the amount of work and pick up needed after the Necromes had attacked the World of Twelve. But tonight, Yugo has set up something that he hopes that’ll relieve Amalia from her stress.

“Oh Sadida, Yugo! You cannot believe how tired I am! I’m almost drained from helping out almost half of the kingdom.”

“Well I hope you’re not too drained, because I have a surprise for you!”

Amalia raises her head off the bed, wondering what surprise her husband has in store.

“But first! You gotta close your eyes.”

“Are you being serious? If I close my eyes I’m falling asleep.”

“Come on Ami, just close your eyes. It’ll be worth it.”

“Alright, but you better lead me there quick or bonne nuit!” (little french joke there… IM ONLY IN UNIT 4 ON DUOLINGO BEFORE YOU SAY ITS NOT FUNNY 😭)

“Oh, It won’t take long, we’ll be there before you can say tofu.”

“To-“

In the blink of an eye, they were there.

“Alright you can open them in.. 3… 2… 1… okay, now!”

As the princess opened her eyes she saw the most beautiful sight she’s ever seen, even more beautiful than the sunsets she watches everyday. They were nearby a waterfall hidden within the Sadida forest and flowers that were shaped into a heart shape, white, yellow, and pink flowers as fireflies filled the air. It was quiet, and quiet was perfect.

“Wow.. Yugo this is.. very childish but surprisingly romantic.”

“Thank- Wait, how is this childish?!”

“Well the flowers in a heart shape? Not saying it isn’t cute because trust me it’s adorable, but it reminds me of something a teen would do!”

“Oh..”

The eliatrope looked slightly upset, he didn’t know that this wouldn’t be enough.

“But, this, it’s beautiful. The waterfall, the fireflies, and the flowers, they’re all beautiful.”

While saying this, Amalia pecks Yugo on the cheek. Making his frown fade away, and turn into a soft smile.

“That’s not all, I got more for tongiht.”

“Really? What is it?”

As soon as Amalia said that, the eliatrope has grabbed her by her waist and pulled her in, to where their bodies are touching, as Yugo leans in and kisses her on the lips. The passionate kiss between the two lasts almost forever, until Amalia pulls away, gasping for air. Seeing the is makes Yugo chuckle, even though he has no place to laugh, his wings are stimming like crazy.

“You need air?”

“Well if I knew that this kiss would last that long I would’ve made sure to take a moment to gather myself! Plus, you can’t be talking, I know you’re way much more happier about this than me.”

“How do you know?”

She points at his hat, his wings still going crazy as ever, making him a little embarrassed himself.

“It’s okay, you don’t have to hide the fact that you loved it.”

“Would I be wrong to say I did?”

“No, I think the only reason you liked it that much is because it’s me!”

He rolled his eyes playfully, of course he’d enjoy it that much, it’s his wife! He hasn’t been apart of any other relationships since. Amalia is his first.

“Yeah, come with me..”

Yugo had grabbed the princess’s hand and had created a portal to the INSIDE OF THE WATERFALL?

“W-Wait YUGO IM NOT-“

Before she could finish her sentence, they were there, BOTH soaked in water, but behind the waterfall looked like a secret hangout, there was two porch swings, one covered in green and white flowers, white cushioning with a beautiful white fluffy pillow, and the other one with black cushioning, with a blue pillow, it seemed less decorated than the other swing, but it still seemed comfortable. There was flowers on the top sides of the roof of the cave-like rock shelter and a little wooden coffee table with the little wooden figures of the gang, Dally, Eva, Yugo Amalia, and of course, Ruel.

“YUGO! Come on! I told you I wasn’t ready to enter the waterfall!”

“Oops.. sorry”

The princess started pouting, after a hardworking day, she didn’t want to get SOAKED by a waterfall. She just wanted to lay down and relax. But then she looked around and saw the hangout area, once again, not over the top but, peaceful.

“Sorry, I- Amalia…”

“Yugo, I know, you tried and thank you for that, but what is this supposed to be?”

“I just wanted to show you this hangout I made for the two of us, just us two, and nobody else.”

“Nobody else?”

“Nobody.”

Hearing this, the princess got a little bit shy.. *He wanted to be alone with me?*

“Now whenever we are doing all that paperwork, we can do it together in the same area, where it’s quiet, and where nobody can find us.”

“Oh Yugo… I really don’t deserve you. You’re an amazing guy and you’re just too good for me!”

“Well I can say the same for you to Amalia.”

“You’re such a dork! A very caring dork..”

The two settled down in the blue and black swing, with Yugo laying in Amalia’s lap as she rubbed his head.

“I love you Amalia.”

“I love you to Yugo.”

He's an expert at playing stupid. I don't have any actual situations from canon off the top of my head to apply this to, but his wits are sharp enough for him to pull it off when shit isn't explosively hitting the fan

He hates not being able to fly, flying is/was the main way he would de-stress. Nothing makes him feel lighter than the breeze in his feathers and a breathtaking view

This man's commitment to The Bit is so underestimated. If The Bit was a person, it'd be part of his polycule. People just overlook his ability to commit to a bit because he has to personally find the bit worth committing to

Obligatory Shiny Good Crow Brain mention. Why do you think his backpacks need sorting like once every few weeks (though he neglects them for longer than that)? And shiny is not always literal. Sometimes it means flowers or pretty types of wood or a neat mob.

Every once in a while someone can get him to laugh in a way that Almost sounds like a squawk. He doesn't know how it happens, it's like an involuntary snort laugh, but with cawing.

Unfortunately for him, playfully raising his blood pressure (stares at the kids, Tubbo, the polycule, some others) is kinda funny. It's the way he gets louder the more exasperated he gets.

He has 100% slept so hard that he snored loud enough to earn a kick in the side from Chayanne

Speaking of sleep, this idiot will pass out in that wooden chair and then wake up in the morning and bitch about his neck aching as if he isn't the reason it's aching. Tallulah especially has roasted him for this

His dedication to Chayanne and Tallulah can go unmentioned bc it's just so obvious but I need everyone to understand it's not just how he'd burn the island to ashes for them. It's also how he'd stop mid-tea party with Tallulah, Pomme & Co, dressed the whole nine yards in a tutu, tiara & obnoxious amounts of pretend jewelry to beat the ever-loving SHIT out of a threat

At first Irish Goodbyes were unintentional (which is what made them so funny) but now it's become one of the biggest bits he's committed to. This man loves embodying that gif of the dude going ✌🏻 and vanishing.

Tallulah totally told him about the Duolingo "It's Spanish or Vanish" meme. It won't leave his head now

Anytime he does the reverb voice or something he is pulling a megaphone out of his backpack and yelling into it

Because I forgot it in the first hc set and it's too funny for me not to include, I must once again tap the sign that says "Phil and Fit fuck nasty behind Fit's gym." Why do you think the shit Fit says like "big boy" gets such a reaction out of Phil? He's heard it elsewhere

He thinks he has too much self-respect to do it but if he didn't, he'd 100% be the dad to dab or whip-nae nae just to make Chayanne and Tallulah faceplant on the ground out of embarrassment

Speaking of faceplanting, Tallulah is so good at timing when she does it, it absolutely kills Phil every time. It's like one of the Top 5 ways to get him to crack up

Calling back to the Bit Commitment hc: "The 4th Wall" is a bit he made up and won't stop referencing. It's not that he's fail rping in meta, he's getting conspiracy-style existential as a joke and that's why Tallulah hates it so much

Stealing this one from my hcs about my angel OC inspired by Phil: If you put him in water, his wings will involuntarily flap like a bird in a bath. It isn't nonstop, it's like a stim he can't help doing every so often.

He loves Rose so much. She instantly makes him feel safe. He regularly has to resist the urge to passionately gush about her to people because he knows they'd be like What The Fuck Are You On About. Rose is blorbo from his brain (little does he know, she isn't entirely)

He likes to pretend he isn't, but he's sentimental as hell. Why do you think he hasn't changed the ugly dirt shack? Why do you think he has so many backpacks of stuff? He's got that crow hoarder brain but he also just attaches to things to easily. Nostalgia and love for history has him in a death grip. Little does he know, it's a trait he's kept from his past

Speaking of his past, until I get canon story explaining otherwise, in my mind he IS hardcore!Phil but the Federation wiped his memory after somehow managing to invite him to the island. The Ender King & Rose's arrivals into qsmp canon are two very different ways of attempting to trigger his memories. What he thinks are dreams are actually those forgotten memories of what he was doing before coming to the island

Have been waiting for someone to open a Strenritter ask! My top top top Q about them: what language do they use when speaking to each other?! Clearly, the Sterneitters are supposed to be ✨diverse✨TM, which I guess makes sense, since Quincies are basically like “special” humans meaning that they can come from anywhere on earth.. Characters like Jugram and Bazz have obvious Germanic influence, Cang Du is Chinese/East Asian-coded, Bambietta and Berenice Gabrielli have vaguely Italian sounding names, Askin is apparently a Turkish name; I could go on, but you get the idea. So I’ve always wondered: what language does Kubo imagine them speaking in: English (?) German (?) or do they have some magic Quincy universal translator planted in their ear and they can just speak their respective mother tongues and everyone will understand? Also, when they talk to the shinigamis, do they speak Japanese? Can the shinigamis speak English?! These thoughts have been keeping me awake for weeks and I need answers 😭😭.. Curious to hear what you think!

There is a long answer to this but I am doing Dog Activities at the moment so a short answer I will elaborate on later:

1. Dead people and anyone in spirit world gets universal translation *unless they are consciously choosing to speak a specific language*. Iba actually understand his boss when Komamura is talking to himself in Wolf right up until Komamura decides he's going to tell Kenpachi a joke in Wolf, and Iba sighs wistfully, and writes another incomprehensble email to Duolingo about including Wolf or Bird as a language.

2. The sternritter speak a lot of languages but the one language NONE of them speak with any competence is German. Even the ones that grew up speaking German don't speak it anymore because they deleted that knowledge in favor of being better cultists.

They added a "same league penalty" in Duolingo so if you were in the same league for more than two weeks straight, but you weren't #1 in the league you wouldn't actually advance to the next league, even if you were in the top ten.

1/50 days of productivity

Today is the start of my new productivity challenge. I haven't done one in a while, and I feel like this is the perfect moment. I have lots to do to stay on top of my goals for the summer exam season, and hopefully this challenge will provide me with some motivation. This morning I got all caught up with my history of religions class, which is great because I wasn't sure one morning on work would be enough. On a non-academic side of things I am not vibing at all with my current read Daughter Of The Forest by Juliet Mariller. I am 30-ish% in and I think I might dnf this book. The main problem is the writing, I am not liking it, and it's not making me like the characters. If it were a shorter book I would probably power through, but since it's a 600 pages novel there's a big chance it will be a dnf for me. I might finish the chapter I am on at the moment before taking a final decision, but it's not looking too bright right now.

Productivity:

finished the 6th recorded lecture of my history of religions class

listened and annotated the recording of the 7th lecture

went to class for a two hour lecture

poster my master to do list for this productivity challenge

practiced Irish on duolingo

Self care:

read first thing in the morning

i will cook myself something nice for dinner

Studying for Fun

Ok, Girlies, Part of me was like “duh, Queenie, they know how to have fun;” but then I realise that what I actually needed to do was provide advice for structured fun- not to mention resources!! So, those are my two points for today.

Part 1: Structure

You know what your actual timetable looks like, but here’s a sample one that I’ve made that might help you add structure to your day

Now here’s how to actually do that

List out every single thing you HAVE to do in a week- work, studying etc, but also tidying, cleaning, what day is laundry day.

Make up a grid like this, or do a list of times, however you’d prefer. Fill in all the immovable things- work*,lectures- and then fill the moveable things- study time, exercise, travel time to your lectures- around them.

if you work shifts, you may need to do this weekly 3. Be realistic. Are you actually going to wake up at 5:00? Girl, are you not going to socials on Wednesday nights? Are you not going to need a little bit more time in bed on a Thursday morning? You know what makes sense for you. But also, can you realistically get all the things you need to do done if you wake up at 10 and go to bed by 6?

I’m using silly examples, but I think you get the point that you need to make sure you are working healthily for your lifestyle.

Another idea that can really help for structure and discipline is parallel play … that’s a phrase usually thrown about in child development, but whatever…

Parallel play or body doubling is essentially two or more people working on two separate tasks, but in the same space.

study with your friends

Set goals with your friends

Call them and exercise together

Accountability buddies are how you keep up structure.
