im sure everyone’s seen the argument by non-wincest shippers that canon weirdcest moments can be explained off as particularly close brothers. i’ve seen wincesties respond by straight up denying it, but honestly, i see where they’re coming from. they do TECHNICALLY have a point, yet still, it fundamentally doesnt sit well with me.

if you isolate all of these little incidents they could be perceived as purely brotherly. its got me thinking about what exactly makes wincest so appealing, and why i as a wincest shipper immediately have an exasperated reaction to people insisting that sam&dean are purely platonic.

i also see this argument frequently bundled with the stance that “weirdcest isn’t a justification for shipping wincest” (which is a whole other can of worms altogether— the puritan culture of ship culture rn), but you gotta take a step back and just ask yourself… why am i so intent on seeing these characters as platonic?

the prevailing argument ive seen is that siblings CAN be terribly close without being incestuous. this is totally fair. i’m not saying that if you are particularly close with your siblings in a sam & dean type manner that you are incestuous. obviously relationships between family is vastly complex & changes with the culture you grew up in.

the only problem here is that people try to go so far to explain sam&dean’s relationship as to not paint it as romantic. if they weren’t related, it’d be insane to think they weren’t romantic. they are consistently and repeatedly put in situations and exchange dialogue that’s used to convey romantic tone in western media. my point here being— the writers know that they are doing. and they are doing it INTENTIONALLY.

yes, certain cultures find extensive physical touch and kisses between siblings platonically acceptable. yes, you can be very close to your siblings without wanting to fuck them. but that is such a reach given what you are being presented with. you are missing the fundamental thematic point of supernatural: family horror!!

by so steadfastly arguing that sam&dean cannot be read as romantic you are purposefully ignoring the the text. you are glossing over the repeating themes of generational trauma and incest that are touched on time and time again, with john’s father abandoning him, mary’s parents being hunters, the struggle she went through to get out of the life but how family trauma & the past permeates itself into your being. you are ignoring the benders, the ghost pregnant with her fathers child, and the time azazel KISSED MARY in HER FATHERS BODY.

supernatural pushes incestuous themes SO HARD. it purposefully plays with & explores the double-sided blade that is family. it touches on a REALLY TABOO subject without being overwhelming or heavy handed. of course its going to attract people who enjoy these themes. OF COURSE we’re going to look at the two homoerotic brother leads and see something between them! it’s intentionally placed in the script! its a valid reading of the text!

this is why i get frustrated when people say that wincest shippers are twisting canon for the sake of shipping, because we’re not. when people say this they are taking a piece of media that is intriguing in how it handles a socially unacknowledged part of the human experience and forcing their viewing of it on others. they are saying that you aren’t allowed to enjoy those themes because it is inherently wrong or shameful to EXPLORE THE TOPIC. i dunno. that sounds pretty authoritarian to me.

it’s totally fine to be grossed out by incest or avoid wincest because it makes you uncomfortable. what ISNT okay is to say its an exaggerated reaction to canon, because it really isnt. in fact, its a pretty normal & sane conclusion to come to after seeing those two. the fact that they aren’t explicitly incestuous might even enhance this idea. it touches on the unspoken secretive nature of family trauma and the complicated, messy reality of crossing boundaries with blood without being cliche or overdramatic.

im going to incite occam’s razor here: yes, they could just be brothers. yes, you can explain it all away as particularly close siblings. yes, you can argue that it isnt explicitly canon. but really, why would you do all that when the show incessantly implies that they’re more? and more importantly, why are you so quick to say that a topic cannot be explored because it’s complicated? is that really the sentiment that we as a society want to hold regarding media?

okay, so! the idea i said i needed to run by you? i spent hours doing these edits to explain it better adsgsjd

so i was thinking about modern abo jaceluke (it doesn't have to be tied to any of the aus we've talked about, but it surely can fit somewhere there!) and I thought "to what means would rhaenyra go to stop jacaerys and lucerys' relationship?"

and then i thought that pretty much like in canon, the one to see rhaenyra despairing over something and take a rash decision and fuck it even worse would be daemon. so daemon sees rhaenyra arguing with jaacerys constantly about lucerys and decides to step in. he contacts lady misery, a past lover and the chief redactor of the most notorious gossip twitter and instagram diary, silk diaries, and asks her to post the compromising pictures she must have of jacaerys from his many escapades to the north and make it look like it's happening as of now. for a price, lady misery complies and releases the pictures from a year ago and makes it look like it's happening right now.

jace, who didn't even tell cregan about his drunken make out session with his sister doesn't have any proof to defend himself, and knows his relationship with lucerys is in real danger. that's probably why he sounds so desperate to contact lucerys, because he knows his younger brother is really insecure and that he's been fed lies about jace's hookups by their parents and aemond (who wants to see them break up so bad). it doesn't help the fact that jace knows lucerys knows how many people jace has fucked over the years and that it can probably make sense in lucerys' mind.

lucerys knows his brother and deep in his heart knows that he wouldn't hurt him like that, so jace has to be telling the truth. however, because he's still insecure and hurt, and because lucerys is a little, revengeful shit, and cannot cope with jacaerys thinking he's a child, he hits right where it hurts jace the most ;)

jace comes home the next day and they have angry sex. like, super angry sex. because lucerys is angry at jace for sleeping with girls before him (*rolls eyes*) and jace is so fucking mad lucerys made him fucking grovel and sound "pathetic" over text and cannot stand the idea of lucerys running to aemond (like, that makes him rabid). so they fuck like beasts for hours and hours, break the bed and probably end up with lucerys knocked up 🫢 this all came because i wanted to picture them having hate sex/angry sex without them actually hating each other...

It’s so funny you went with the supposed cheating angle, because as I was thinking of the modern AU featuring the twins, I had the same thought, wondering what pushed Luke into Aemond’s arms and away from Jace. My mind, much like yours, landed on suspected/fabricated cheating.

Their texts are exactly the kind of argument I’d imagine they would have, particularly with Jace being so desperate to know Luke is okay. Only for the utter heartbreak of seeing him flaunting about with Aemond to sink in like a knife to the heart.

Much like you I think Jace would be rabid upon his return. I think Luke might play really hard to get, might even put up some protests, physically or otherwise.

They’re a mess of bite marks and tears and torn skin and bloodied nails when the deed is done, and Lucerys had made a mantra of the words “I hate you”, yet as they lay on the aftermath (not afterglow - it looks like a fucking crime scene) he mutters, “I hate you…for leaving me.”

Jace, the king of aftercare, would leave once more, albeit briefly, to gather supplies to clean them both up. As he’s wiping Luke down with a warm, damp rag, he’d murmur, “So do I, baby.”

Luke hates the idea of them being on poor terms though, he literally cries over it and Jace hushes him with numerous, tender kisses.

“I know you’d never cheat, I know it,” Luke would babble, clinging to his brother’s shoulders.

“It’s just seeing those pictures, J, it was like something came over me-“

His brother kisses him again, softer, smiling. Grazes the back of his knuckles against the bruised state of his brother’s hips.

“I know the feeling.”

Opinion on Turin/Beleg hehe

ok but seriously I could write an essay about how much I love them. they hit that perfect balance of sweetness and angst for me. they are so devoted to each other that they are willing to die for the other. and they do! Beleg knew that going back to Túrin would be risky, and he did it anyway. Beleg isn’t stupid, he knows that Túrin is ill fated and that misfortune would surely fall on him, but his heart yearned to be with this cursed man so much that he just didn’t care anymore, he couldn’t bear to be apart from Túrin any longer

the fact that they are so queer coded to the point that they’re like borderline canon doesn’t hurt. jirt really gave us a homoerotic warrior’s bond with sappy dialogue that drives me insane. “yielding to his love against his wisdom”. I am going to chew bark off a tree

and the tragedy!! elf/human ships are the best bc of the angst of the elf choosing love over eternity while understanding that their human’s life is finite and yet they still choose an ephemeral love over all else. but this one doesn’t end that way because the elf dies first!! Túrin stabs Beleg to death WHILE BELEG WAS TRYING TO SAVE HIM. and then Túrin DIES BY THE SAME SWORD. FUCK ME UPPP. and then there’s the HoME version where Túrin kisses Beleg after stabbing him to death??? just bury me in the dirt

Robin/Vickie/her bf storyline - the Byler of it all

This was initially supposed to be in response to this post but I realised that I have a lot to say about the Robin/Vickie/her bf storyline and all the Byler coding/parallels within it because they’re insane. During my first watch of Vol 2, they actually gave me a lot of hope and literally every part of that storyline can be linked back to Byler. I don’t know if it’s just me and my brain making crazy connections but let me just break everything down here.

One of the reasons why all the parallels between the Robin/Vickie/her bf love triangle as well as Mike/El/Will one is because Robin’s storyline is the only other canon queer storyline we have in the show and it’s depicted in a more blatant way compared to the Byler one. Having Robin out as a queer character to the audience via Steve and us being able to view her having these interactions about who she is and her feelings makes it more possible for us to engage with Robin’s storyline in a more active way rather than the confusion we feel over the Byler one as it’s a lot of subtext that hasn’t been directly stated. 

The connections between them are therefore important as if they’re making Byler parallels with a more explicit queer storyline then it really does make you wonder exactly what direction they’re going in with Byler.

I think one of the most blatant parallels that a lot of people have pointed out is the shot where Robin stumbles open Vickie and her bf kissing and Will in between the Mike and El reunion scene. 

The love triangle imagery in both these shots are clear as day but the context of them are quite different in nature.

Some key differences to note is that Robin is the one in focus whilst Vickie and her bf are blurred out to emphasise Robin’s pain/suffering over them as a couple whereas for Will he’s the one who’s blurred out whilst Mike and El are in focus to emphasise their reunion. Let’s also note that Robin is clearly upset here whereas Will is smiling and happy.

I know that doesn’t sound much like Byler proof but I think these differences here are important to note the different nature of both storylines in a sense. With Robin’s queer storyline being more blatant and explicit compared to Will’s it is just meant to focus on her more over Vickie and her random bf who aren’t relevant characters. 

Whereas in this scene, this reunion is quite significant and has been built up over some time as they spent the last few episodes searching for El. This is not a Will-focused shot. In the audience’s eyes, it’s not supposed to be even. This shot is not intentionally supposed to blatantly be referencing the love triangle at all compared to the Robin/Vickie/her bf shot. What I think is really important here is they chose to insert Will in between Mike and El in this shot.

Whilst the focus is not on Will, which does allude more to the fact that this shot isn’t supposed to blatantly reference the love triangle, he’s still in between them. They didn’t have to do that. They didn’t have to clearly place Will in between El and Mike during their reunion scene. Placing Will in between Mike and El literally also suggests he’s metaphorically in between them as well. And this is not the first time they’ve done this. They’ve focused on Will’s suffering too many times in the roller rink and he’s majorly in frame with Mike and El this season. (Last season, although not Will himself, they had El carrying Will’s bear whilst kissing Mike and she was holding it between them - again why have El hold Will’s bear during the scene - it’s also key to note that he’s always been in between them).

Coming back to Robin/Vickie/her bf, I think you can also argue that Robin is not only literally framed in between Vickie and her bf but she’s somewhat metaphorically and figuratively there too. As when Vickie sees Robin there, she has an odd reaction..

The guilt on Vickie’s face like she’s been caught doing something she wasn’t supposed to be doing is very strange. It’s meant to cue us into the fact that things aren’t what they seem to be here. That Vickie indeed has feelings for Robin because you do not react that guilty if your “just a friend from band” catches you with your bf. Cuing the audience in here is important because it tells us that just because Vickie has a bf it doesn’t mean that Robin’s chances are out of the window. Being queer and questioning your sexuality is complicated and it’s not nearly as black and white as it seems. If you also consider that a lot of people watching this show just do not understand queer people at all this is definitely an important to see. Also, if they were to make Byler canon later on, this storyline definitely eases up the audience into the fact that Mike having a girlfriend beforehand doesn’t discredit Byler at all. 

Robin is therefore in between Vickie and her bf not because she’s literally coming in between them because Vickie has feelings for Robin as alluded in this scene (and the end scene too which we’ll get onto later). This also can be linked back to Will being in between Mike and El not because he’s trying to but because Mike has feelings for Will. 

Like Vickie in that scene with her suspicious guilt upon seeing Robin, Mike has also been doing questionable things throughout the entire season that make no sense unless he has feelings for Will. However, due to the nature of both storylines, they are implicit and not as clear to the general audience but they are there.

The hug refusal at the airport, intentionally ignoring Will because he’s oh so in love with his gf but if that was the case how did you even notice his moping over El’s lying and even blame him for sabotaging your day, the whole “El’s my girlfriend ” whilst “we’re friends, we’re friends” as an excuse to why he didn’t send Will letters but that doesn’t even make sense, going on about who all his other friends were great but Hawkins just wasn’t the same without Will implying that Will is not like his other friends but special to Mike, the heart eyes and lip glances he never gives his girlfriend, he can’t say that he loves his girlfriend only until she’s on her deathbed and he needs encouragement from Will to do that as well-

We’ve clearly established that all the weird inconsistencies in Mike’s behaviour is either trashy writing or that they’re trying to tell us something here.

If we go with the second option, yes, they are trying to tell us something here just like they were with Vickie’s little guilty expression to indicate her having feelings for Robin and feeling conflicted about it, just like how Mike is now. He has feelings for Will, but there’s also El and he’s questioning a lot of things, basically he’s very confused. 

If we move onto Steve and Robin’s little talk after Robin runs away, I think what Steve says during that entire scene is particularly interesting.

We have Steve talking about how it doesn’t make sense in response to Vickie having a boyfriend.

As Steve is used to make the audience more aware of Robin’s queerness and her storyline, I think it’s important to listen to what he says. Him saying it doesn’t make sense makes me think of another straight relationship that doesn’t make sense this season hmmm...

In fact, us Bylers, have been talking about how M*leven’s relationship doesn’t make sense at all. Especially this season. This season it was nonsensical.

Here, we have Steve talking about how Vickie’s whole relationship doesn’t make sense, Steve, who was so sure Vickie was queer (he’s right too), is once again pointing out how it doesn’t make sense and things aren’t what they seem upon first sight to Robin. It’s like with Byler and M*leven throughout the seasons, on the surface, things really aren’t what they seem, you really have to dig deeper into the subtext and understand the narrative to realise that. And Steve pointing out Vickie’s queerness as well as mentioning how her bf doesn’t make sense is pretty much all of us pointing out signs of Mike’s queerness and talking about how M*leven doesn’t make sense. It was just written so nonsensically this season especially. They actually don’t make sense whilst our “gay Mike Wheeler” bible grows more and more every day. 

Robin’s reaction, on the other hand, she’s very pessimistic about the whole ordeal. She feels ready to submit to the possibility that Vickie is straight and will never like her back rather than anything else and it’s so sad but it’s what queer people are used to. She’s also living in a small town in the 80s and what are the chances that her crush is queer too and likes her back. It’s something us queer people struggle with. During that time, when we were more discriminated against and had to hide who we were, it was even trickier for Robin. The same could be said for Will’s situation here. It’s hard for Will. He doesn’t know who to open up to. Who he is sometimes makes him feel like a mistake and it’s difficult. Will, like Robin, is ready to submit to the prospect of being rejected/it being impossible rather than actually reaching out and giving it a chance because it’s not safe for us. He’d rather repress his feelings for Mike and accept the fact that he’s straight and has a girlfriend than open up to him about it just like Robin seemed keen to do with Vickie. 

Both Robin and Will are unreliable narrators because their fear and feelings here cloud their judgement. They are coming from very reasonable places however but the what the show conveys here is that despite their fears things might actually work out for them.

The last two scenes that I’d look to look at is the Rockie PB&J scene and the Byler painting scene because parallels galore.

For the audience and Robin, mainly to the audience though, this scene confirms queer Vickie and her feelings for Robin in subtext are very clear. With Vickie’s inexplicable nervous behaviour making her feelings for Robin blatant, as well as the reveal she broke up with her bf better setting up Robin as a romantic option, and not to mention Vickie mentioning how sometimes her mouth moves faster than her brain paralleling the exact same words Robin said in Vol 1 to Steve in relation to her feelings for Vickie (also Steve just smirking at the end of their scene). 

After all the parallels with Byler, Robin and Vickie being set up as requited - possibly endgame - is a very good sign. Because after poor Robin’s denials and internal suffering which paralleled Will’s a lot, she’s finally on the route of getting the girl (the girl who appeared straight with a bf like Mike!).

Their interactions in that scene also parallel Byler interactions in the painting scene. 

I’m going to reference this post by @bluemeetyellow​ here because it’s absolutely perfect.

I think when Vickie first enters and continues to ramble on nervously to Robin about what she meant when she said certain things is literally paralleling Mike giving the most ridiculous responses ever during his fight with Will at the roller rink that wouldn’t make sense unless he’s gay (The difference being Vickie here is showing nervousness due to romantic feelings whilst Mike was being hostile and weird due to internalised homophobia and feelings). 

Then Vickie and Mike both starting off talking about their insecurities/worries over relationships with their straight partners with Will and Robin (who both have feelings for them) listening. Then, both of them proceeding to apologise with how stupid their complaining seemed in the odds of bigger problems whereas we have Robin and Will reassuring them that it’s alright. 

Moving on, both the scenes move out of the focus of their straight partners, and become way more romantically coded in terms of their dynamics.

With Robin and Vickie, it’s the nervous gazes, soft music in the background, and Vickie’s final words paralleling back to what Robin said in Vol 1 in relation to her romantic feelings towards Vickie ultimately just confirming that they’re reciprocated and romantic in nature.

With Mike and Will, they’re not there yet and I don’t think this interaction exactly parallels the Robin and Vickie scene at the end but the bedroom one does which I’ll move onto, however, the scene does become more romantically coded towards them despite the fact that Will is using El’s name to hide his feelings, there’s more blatant focus on the fact that he’s talking about his feelings to the audience. Mike’s reaction is kept as ambiguous as possible but there are some soft looks and lip glances and little giveaways that we picked up here and there. Unlike Robin, Will does not get his closure this season but with all the narrative clues and things not adding up it’s like we’re getting there, we’re getting there and if they’re building up to it slowly (but if they screw us over we are definitely not forgiving them but it wouldn’t make sense if this went unaddressed this scene was so significant).

Moving onto the bedroom scene, it parallels Robin and Vickie’s last moments so well: the nervousness, the soft looks, the tender, emotional music, the double meaning behind all their words. When Mike says “we need to be a team...friends...best friends” there’s especially so much double meaning to unpack there it also parallels Will saying “we used to be best friends” back in the roller rink and we all know Will wants more than that but the emotional value of best friends is so strong for him. Especially after they pushed each other away. Same for Mike. Being best friends right now and having the other near is important to them. Besides, they don’t believe that the other will ever reciprocate and they believe that being best friends is the closest they’ll get to each other they just want to be close to each other. 

Mike’s nervousness accompanied with Will intensely looking at him with a “yes” conveys this mutual understanding between them that’s clearly layered. That mutual understanding at the end is the same with Robin and Vickie with the whole “my mouth runs faster than my brain” statement actually equating to their feelings for each other. Just like “best friends” does for Mike and Will. The way these scenes are shot with the soft music and soft looks are just crazily similar and as Rockie is basically reciprocated it’s even more proof that Byler will be. 

To wrap it all up, I’m not sure how crazy these connections seem or not, but there are just so many, and they match up so perfectly, their are some things that just can’t be ignored. So many of these scenes are filmed similarly to Byler. This entire storyline is just written similarly to Byler too. And both of them are canon queer storylines as well and seeing how things ended for Robin and Vickie...I guess a little hope comes a long way for Byler too : )

au/episode where Obi-Wan and Anakin run-afoul of some Sith temple defensive measure and both completely lose their memory. Featuring:

wandering around a highly contested hell-scape planet fighting absolutely everyone because they both sense doom from both armies and instinctively trust only each other

it’s deeply embarrassing to be beat up by amnesia duo because they're flailing about really incompetently with makeshift staffs (sith temple stole their lightsabers and their muscle memory is adjusted for a weightless blade) while shouting at each other, “HEY SIR JUST REALIZED I CAN LEVITATE STUFF?!?! CAN EVERYONE LEVITATE STUFF?!?!”

(they think their names are sir and general because that’s what the clones keep calling them while chasing them down)

just the silliest fight scenes as the troopers are desperately trying to demonstrate they’re friendly while also attempting to subdue the Jedi before they die and obi-wan and anakin are really in tune with the force but barely capable at fighting so they mostly just dodge and do cartwheels while like 300 men try to tackle them. everyone looks stupid.

playful bickering over whose older because Sir looks older but maybe it’s just the beard (obi-wan refuses to shave in case General is right)

platonic cuddling because they both get cold and they don’t know they’re not supposed to 

they both sleep incredibly well, it’s honestly insane how much better they feel a week-in, even on the run they’re getting so much more sleep 

(this can most likely be attributed to a lack of crushing guilt and stress but the cuddling also probably helps)

Obi-Wan struggling to use the force and anakin trying to explain until Obi-Wan bursts into tears because “it’s not easy for him how are you making it look so easy”

“Maybe I’m just more experienced?” Anakin says in a panic. 

sparring with staffs like no- this is- this almost right but not at all...

Anakin being very gee whiz sweet a la episode one, like he sees some troopers are in trouble with the quicksand and insists that they go to the rescue.

the group of shinies are relieved but also very unnerved to be rescued by kind and gentle General Skywalker and scowling General Kenobi (Obi-Wan also wanted to help the troops but felt the need to be overly suspicious to balance things out)

alternating between being the risk taker and the cautious one (no change from canon there)

aaand Obi-Wan occasionally going: “What if we're married, or lovers? Maybe we should try and sleep together, just to see if it jogs any memories" because his default mode is slut 

Anakin: "I don't know man it feels wrong" 

Obi-Wan: "yes what does that have to do with anything"

(I’m not very into Obikin so the minor Obikin subplot would be a hilarious source of deep personal and physical distress to them once memories are regained)

Literally the entirety of what happens:

*make out for 30 seconds*

Obi-Wan: *breaks it off* “Yeah you were right that was super weird sorry”

Anakin: “uhhh” (it was super weird for him too but Obi-Wan’s a really good kisser so amnesia!Anakin now has uncomfortably mixed feelings)

Rex chasing them and growing increasingly stressed because everyone thinks they’re way more sexually involved then they actually are and just knows they’re going to freak out when they get back to normal

supporting evidence: cuddling, calling obi-wan ‘sir,’ the fact that the more time passes the more radiantly cheerful they seem- like we get that forgetting all their responsibilities is probably great but they keep getting more good-spirited (this is 95% because of the sleep), a lot of times when they find them they’re inexplicably shirtless and sweaty (meditating and sparring)...the list goes on

this is confirmed when they freak the fuck out upon regaining their memories. Histrionics, vomiting, avoiding each-other, crying. 

so much crying

SO uncomfortable to be around

they get back to coruscant and Anakin breaks down apologizing to Padme and she’s completely understanding, doesn’t consider it infidelity, completely natural given the circumstances, and then Anakin chokes out the explanation of sort-of enjoying his Master’s tongue in his mouth and how he almost even kissed him twice 

Padme: ”...That’s...it?”

Anakin: *sniffling* “I mean sometimes we woke up with boners but that kind-of just happens even when you’re in medbay or whatever...”

I’ve making headcanons about all of my hyper fixations for a while now and just dumping them on my friends so I’m gonna also dump them here.

It’s a bit magic, and the fact that she follows this up with another fave, Listening Through the Air Shaft is *chef’s kiss*.

Pivoting from 3.01, this fic is a wonderful, quiet character study that looks at Rio in the aftermath of the shooting before he explodes back into Beth’s life. It pulses with emotion and with the promise of catharsis, and it’s just a really special little fic. The Rio voice is terrific too.

He finally gets what he needs one day when Elizabeth’s wearing this tight black sweater with a keyhole that shows off just enough to make Rio’s jaw rock. It’s so out of the ordinary, so unlike her ugly li’l sweaters or her surburban mama button-ups, he does a double take, head whippin’ around so fast that she catches it immediately. Then she catches where his gaze lands, where it keeps landin’ through their whole stilted, irritated conversation, and he sees her chest pinken til he can count her freckles. He sucks his lower lip into his mouth, and her lips fall open just the smallest bit, and then she looks up at him.

Eyes locked on each other, Rio takes a step closer. Elizabeth doesn’t back away.

I feel like I've recced this fic 1,200 times at this point, haha, but it really is one of my favourite fics in the fandom. It has this sort of grip on you as a reader that almost embodies Beth's grip on Rio in the story, and the way it builds and builds and releases only to build and build again is really delicious, affecting writing.

It takes a lot to make me laugh out loud in a fic, but this one does multiple times. It's just insanely fun, and captures Rio and Mick at their most boyish in a way I find utterly charming. It's really, really delightful.

I'm a bit of a sucker for a good canon divergent fic, and this one pivots the car break up in 2.12 in a smutty way that just works unfairly well. It's such a great little fic that really settles well into Rio's headspace during the messiness of s2, and I love it.

They settle in their respective places and Rio takes the opportunity to give Elizabeth the same once over that asshole did. Her ass really does look great in those pants and she could fill out any shirt. Her eyes linger over him too, tracing his skin, the bar tattoos peeking out from under his t-shirt that she’s seen a million times but she devours at every opportunity. Then her eyes meet his and she gives him that small, crooked lil’ smile.

He’s not one for religion, but every so often he takes his mom to Spanish mass. All the viejitos and pious Catholic types think he’s a banger but his ma’s still excited to show him off. He sits with her in the pew and when the priest asks for the congregation to give thanks to God, he says a prayer for the riches that have come to him, the health and brilliance of his son, the vitality of the other little ones in his life now, and Elizabeth. And when he thinks of her in those moments, he sees her in his mind’s eye with this exact look on her face.

A Bit of a Stretch by @septiembrre 5k words. Teen+. Beth x Rio. Established relationship.

Beth and Rio do a yoga class together! There’s such a lived-in feel to this fic that it feels impossible not to fall a bit in love with it – their relationship is explored in a way that feels true to who the characters are, while sanding down the edges to create something that feels sweet in the way they usually aren’t in canon. It's a great fic, but more than that, it really just works in a way that's a lot more complicated than it looks, and it’s all the more charming for it.

Okay, I know I just said how much I loved canon divergence fics, but it bears repeating – I love canon divergence fics, haha. This is such a great alternate take on how the wire scene in 4.05 goes down, and it simmers with tension from the opening line. The way it escalates as Rio navigates this newest betrayal works really well too, and it results in a pretty sexy and surprisingly emotional sequence. Magic!

It's not for everyone, but I absolutely love fics that feature characters with other people in ways that tell you something about the characters' feelings about somebody else. In this fic, Rio's fucking one of his childhood friends, but it's all about Beth really, and the way both Rio and the OC negotiate that is really compelling writing, and feels so in character for Rio. I really love it.

Rio dreams of her that night, again. It’s irritatingly pedestrian – Elizabeth’s kissing him deep and then, ah, suddenly his gun’s in her hand and she shoots him, with a double encore. It’s always variations on the same futile theme. When he wakes it’s not that he’s freaked, unaware of reality or his whereabouts. But he’s been soaked in anger for so long. He can’t think straight, not on her. It’s honestly terrifying. Cos stubbornly keeping his head on right is – that’s him. Maybe her entire raison d’etre is destroying every single one of his attributes though.

He ain’t sure if his subconscious is desperately screaming that he’s made the wrong move, letting her live. Or if it’s the total opposite. Could be fucking neither. It’s not – it’s not getting any easier. And that main reason for not biting the bullet, that he’d be mad as hell for being mad as hell at himself over killing her, it's not smelling any less idiotic.

Another canon divergence from 2.13 and an interpretation of how s3 could've gone, and another one I really love. There's a throughline of chaotic frustration to this fic that rings true to Rio's character for me, and the way that that reverberates through his moments not just with Beth, but alone and with other women, feels really textured and interesting and real. It's pretty great.

these may be matters of opinion, but even then, i'd like to know your take. i haven't read her firsthand often enough and i trust your judgement over this random redditor who seems to have some sort of blonde-woman related trauma left untapped.

I'm not necessarily the most knowledgable on her in the world, but I do know a decent amount because she's one of my absolute faves and I love her

But ohhhh boy that screenshot is a lot.

I will say that several of the things this person brings up are based in canon but are taken in the worst faith and framed in the way that makes her look as bad as possible, if that makes sense? It’s ripping things away from any context, because there's a very clear bias against her here.

I'll go through it point by point under the cut

First of all though before digging into this, I want to make it clear she was a 15 year old for the majority of the things this person is talking about. Like just pause for a second and remember she’s a 15 year old victim of abuse. That is something that I think factors into a lot of her behavior! Anyways, I kinda while doing this got into a ranty 'talking at you' format in response to the person who wrote all that, so don't take any of this as me yelling at you who asked the question/you anyone reading this.

"She always acted entitled" - Saying Steph is entitled is absolutely ridiculous to me. Stephanie grew up with a very unstable childhood due to her dad frequently being in prison and her mom dealing with a drug addiction, living in a lower class part of the city. Tim is entitled. I don’t mean that as like a bad thing about him, but he is based on his living situation, she is not. She has wanted life to be better for herself and her mom, and is determined about that, but she is not and does not act entitled.

"and stubborn" - I will give you stubborn though, that one is true. She’s stubborn as hell! I don’t really see that as a bad thing though, pretty much every bat is stubborn?

"demanding that Batman and Robin accept her untrained ass" - Steph may have been untrained in fighting but she's shown to have exceptional gymnastics skills from the start, and at one point Bruce even says that with the right training she could be as good if not better than Tim (in Robin #88)! So like... her realizing she enjoys trying to be a hero after she tried it out to deal with her personal business, so she looks to the local experts… and is determined about it… how is that a bad thing? It’s also not like she walked up to them and said ‘im perfect as i am let me in’ what she wanted was a chance to be a hero. But she also wasn't even really looking for approval, either, not having Batman's blessing was never going to stop her. ("So excuse me if I don't jump when you bark, Batman." in Robin #16) Later when Bruce does bring her in to train (and she also gets to train with the BoP) she's excited! She’s stubborn about wanting to be in the hero business, but it’s not like she’s unwilling to work for it.

"advocating leaving criminals to die because they 'deserve it'" - She’s a 15 year old who grew up knowing firsthand how dangerous Gotham criminals can be because of her dad, of course off the bat when they’re in a dangerous situation where any of them could die (because that’s the context here, this is in Robin #35 where they’re trapped in some super dangerous snow) she thinks they shouldn’t go back for another criminal who just tried to kill them and should instead save themselves. But she also literally WITHIN THAT SAME ISSUE then says she realized she learned something after listening to Tim and trying to save the guy! In the same issue! Characters in a story aren’t supposed to be perfect from the start… they learn things along the way???

"trying to steal from the shops they just stopped from being burglarized" - She’s 15 and doesn’t have a ton of money. She was gonna take two sodas, and when Tim said not to do it she paid with very little fuss. They stopped people who were robbing the place at gunpoint for prescription drugs. If you can’t understand the difference in severity between those things like… I do not even know where to start. (this situation is in Robin #56 btw)

"forcing physical affection onto Tim despite his visible discomfort and repeated objections (not even stopping when he told her he had a girlfriend)" - This one I will give you because she did cross boundaries with all that! But I do also want to clarify that she didn't start coming onto him until after Tim kissed her first (in Robin #5) while not telling her he had a girlfriend. That doesn’t excuse her later actions but for the first issue that she’s coming onto him from her perspective he expressed interest and she was just returning it! She even specifically says 'Maybe I should pay you back for saving my life the same way you paid me' (in Robin #16) before kissing him. That first time she kissed him unprompted was under essentially the same circumstances he kissed her unprompted, and she literally did not know about Ariana until after the fact. From that point once she knew about Ari she definitely should have backed off and she didn’t, that’s a very fair thing to criticize about her as a character. But Tim lead her on first, and I feel a lot of people like to casually forget that when talking about this situation. The way this is phrased of ‘not even stopping when he told her-‘ implies she was repeatedly doing the bad behavior before he told her, which is not the case. She still did bad things here but don’t misrepresent the situation.

"And lashing out at Tim, her mother, and her classmates in violent fits of anger" - Every comic book character lashes out at other people for the sake of drama like, I dare you to come up with a well-known superhero character who hasn’t done shit like that to a partner/family/friends in a moment of high tension/stress?

"She treated the girls around her like they were stupid bitches" - frankly this ones a little too vague like, I'm not sure off the top of my head exactly what they're talking about? in that era right around her pregnancy and stuff I really don't recall her being mean with other girls? I could be forgetting something I guess but the closest I can think of is a bit after this period of time when she has the confrontation with Greta in Young Justice but that was Greta attacking her first, not the other way around.

"got insanely jealous if Tim so much as expressed concern about another girl" - Steph getting jealous and thinking Tim was cheating isn’t that crazy when STEPHANIE BASICALLY WAS THE OTHER GIRL DURING TIM’S LAST RELATIONSHIP? Tim has cheated a little bit before! Tim cheated on Ari with both Jubilee from Marvel (during a crossover thing where he even mentions Ari specifically so it’s not like this was out of continuity/a setting she wasn't an issue or something) and also with Steph. While most of the kissing between them was Steph coming onto Tim which I wouldn’t count as cheating on his end, he did still kiss her which I would count. Not to mention that the jealousy thing (I imagine they’re talking about the instance with Star, the girl who taught Tim to skateboard, this arc of stuff starts in Robin #80 and continues for a few issues) is happening during the time she’s dating him while she still doesn’t even know his real name. He literally has a whole other life she doesn’t know about, and is someone who has initiated romantic moments with other girls while in a relationship multiple times before! With that in mind I don’t think a 16 (she's def 16 by this point) year old girl being kinda paranoid about how he interacts with girls he might know in his civilian life is that unreasonable? The later big instance with jealousy is the Darla situation- where Steph sees Darla kiss him and gets mad about it (and doesn’t talk to him about it) and thats what prompts her to become Robin. The important thing to remember about Steph in this time frame is that DC decided she had to die and they wanted to make her Robin first to drum up more attention for that death. They were doing ooc things with her to set those pieces in motion, and that needs to be taken into account. I think her getting upset about seeing something like that isn’t even ooc, but her using it as motivation to become Robin and not even saying anything to him about it is. In the earlier instance where she’s upset/jealous about Star, she does communicate to him what’s going on at least a little bit on the rooftop after they’d saved her. She makes it clear the thing she was upset about is that she feels like she can’t trust him because she doesn’t really know him while he knows everything about her, and that’s why she thinks he’s cheating. Her reaction to the Darla thing is not in line with how earlier in canon Steph would have handled the same situation, because they wanted her to die and needed a way to explain her becoming Robin.

"and expressed that jealousy by accusing him of cheating and throwing things at him" - I just addressed the cheating stuff but the throwing things was fucking slapstick oh my god this is a comic book for kids/teens like. ah yes this is horrible abuse in this little funny montage of how Steph wants him to leave her alone because she’s mad at him and he refuses to give her space

I don’t think anyone at DC or even in fandom would/should try to argue she’s perfect, because she’s not! And I don’t want her to be because perfect characters are boring. Steph is flawed, Steph has been compared in canon to Robin-era Jason by Cass & Bruce

And I think these highlight some of her very real flaws that are an interesting part of her character. These plus her stubbornness and determination are part of what makes her her.

And for fuck's sake the world was mean to her, and to act like it wasn’t is just blatantly ignoring a lot. A criminal father who made her life really difficult (‘when my dad was mad at me he’d lock me in the closet!’), that time she got kidnapped for two weeks and her mom had left her (a 15 year old) alone at home so long she didn't even find out it happened (in text Steph says Crystal was visiting friends, a lot of people interpret that as her mom possibly being in rehab for her addictions again), that whole thing about how one of her dad’s friends tried to sexually assault her as a child, also just how due to her dad's work sometimes criminals would be living in their house (Literally the fucking Riddler at one point!), the fact that we as an audience watched her get tortured for several days because a plan she tried to enact to prove herself backfired since Batman didn’t trust her with important information (something Selina even calls him out on in her internal narration), like… sorry but in what way is all that not the world being mean to her?

She was Robin, she dated Robin, she likes Eggplant (because purple would've looked stupid), and makes jokes. She’s also impulsive, headstrong and determined, and wants to prove to herself and others that she can be more than just the daughter of a shitty criminal, that she can actually be a force to do good in the world.

She’s a complex character, and nobody is required to like her, but to act like she doesn’t have a single redeeming trait is ridiculous. You could write a paragraph like that with the worst moments of basically any character and make them look like shit if that's what you were setting out to do.

-I think Brynjolf would feel super weird wearing anything other than the guild armor. like in a chance arrangement when he's wearing the fine clothes he wouldn't feel quite like himself without the protective layers he's used to keeping between himself and the rest of the world.

-I also think that he would get flustered easily over PDA. like the ldb saunters into the cistern and smacks a kiss on his cheek, or yells "love you!" before leaving and he's a blushing stuttery mess.

-Brynjolf definitely gets jealous. when the ldb finishes the guild questlines and moves on to the dark brotherhood or the companions I think that he would be on edge. The ldb comes back telling him all about all the new friends they're making - Vilkas who gets on their nerves, Farkas who's a really sweet guy even if he thinks he isn't smart, Gabriella who is really nice and funny, Arnbjorn who used to be a companions member before the whole assassin thing, and is sooo nice! he listens lovingly and holds their hand, but still gives them a particularly memorable goodbye kiss.

-I like to pretend that there's a canon reason that Brynjolf isn't a marriage candidate. definitely not just denial lmao. it could be the pure dedication that he feels to his guild, the thought that something distracting him from his responsibility isn't acceptable. maybe it's the fact that he spent so much of his life thinking that Karliah had a hand in Gallus' death despite their obvious love for each other. (i favor the second one because angst). Whatever the reason is, it's unnerving that the new thief he plucked off the street is making him rethink his policy.

-As someone with a particular interest in hands, I think that Brynjolf having lockpick's hands is extremely wonderful. Like, so large, but also so gentle and careful. cannot even imagine what he can do what them.

-Brynjolf probably has a fear of failure, even to a self-sabotaging degree. He didn't want to let the ldb do the Goldenglow job because even Vex couldn't do it. He doesn't want to risk trying again. It def applies to his relationships too - don't get too close in case they leave. this could also be why he's given some flirty lines AND WHY MERCER WAS GOING TO GIVE HIM OUR REGARDS but wasn't considered a serious marriage option.

-A lot of the lines from a chance arrangement could easily be used in smut and I think about it a lot. "It's all about sizing up your mark, lad/lass. The way they walk, what they're wearing. It's a dead giveaway." "Maybe you'd like a taste?" "there's more where that came from... if you think you can handle it." idk I don't have a solid theory but I definitely think that Brynjolf sized up the ldb walking through the riften marketplace and gambled that his smirk and accent would be enough to seduce them. Obviously, he wasn't wrong.

-As I am someone who despises mercer after experiencing his bullshit for almost ten years now, I think that Brynjolf would do his best to protect the ldb from mercer's intensity. Like, I almost always mess up burning the beehives because it's the only time I use magic in my playthroughs. imagine mercer raging because they messed up and now they have to find a new source for honey before maven tears him a new one. Brynjolf carefully wrapping an arm around the ldb and steering them away from the cistern with promises of buying them a congratulatory drink to take their mind off things. goals.

-one last smutty one please don't read if ur not interested in horny posting or are underage. I bet his dick game is insane. like, the internal conflict of whether or not he should be attracted to someone he recruited to the guild? his lad/lass coming back after a hard job, bleeding but triumphant?? flirting after one too many drinks at the flagon and stumbling back to the guild master's chambers, every sound echoing because of all the underground stone??? being fucked while being called lad/lass??????????????????? being told that he was so worried about you while you were gone, that you were all he could think about???????? that he'd been counting the minutes until you returned so he could take you to bed??????????? listening to that voice narrate every explicit thing he was going to do to you????? it is too much.

How you write the characters, their emotions, you always know the characters and how they think, they would act so well, it’s insane, how you describe everything, the surroundings, what the person is doing, everything is always so perfect. Your mimi series The Couple & The Others is one of my favorites and it's comforting to me, it makes me feel at home. Cieli di Toscana is also a favorite of mine. I love everything about that fic so much. I also love your ch. 11 rewrite with the prompts "There are people who love you" and "Give me a hug, please". I adore the hurt/comfort in those two. The angst is just ugh- it's so good, way too good and it destroys me. Like he follows her around the compound and just makes sure she’s okay

Sorry, but [REDACTED] Doesn’t Matter

Spoilers for Persona 3 after October and the ending, and for P4 and P5 “choice moments” or endings

I’m keeping this intro very vague just in case this pops up for someone who hasn’t gotten to this point in the game, or beaten it, but I will go into full spoilers mode under the cut. To give the most basic overview of what this is, it pertains to the loss of a party member in Persona 3.

Now with that over with, welcome to me complaining about a really big issue I have with the whole debate between saving Shinji or letting him die.

Whenever this debate comes up, the number one complaint against the option to let him live is that it “goes against the meaning of the game.” Personally, I find this claim to be untrue for two major reasons. One is that I don’t think it really goes against the meaning of the game in the first place, and also that the game does a very bad job at...making any difference between the two at all?

For my first point, I’ll clarify what I believe the meaning of the game to be. Obviously there are tones of death, and moving past death. However, I don’t believe the message is just “Everyone will die one day, and we need to accept that.” The message is “Everyone will die one day, so we need to make the most of our lives.” This is why Akihiko and Ken find their resolve, because Shinji is gone but they can still continue living their lives for him. This is why SEES continues to live their life to the fullest, because it is what the MC allowed for when they sacrificed themselves. I’m not sure how some people seemed to miss this, or maybe they just didn’t make the same connection, but it seems like it would be hard to miss.

The reason that saving Shinji’s life does not go against this message is because he will still one day die, probably still young because of the drugs, so he still has time to live his life to the fullest. Perhaps you could connect it in a certain way that he is also living for the MC, because they saved his life. The fact that he didn’t die does not take away from the weight that he was willing to die, and thought he would, by saving Ken. It could even go to show that even if you are ready to die, and you somehow get a second chance, that second chance should not be squandered.

That being said, I find the second reason to be a bigger issue for me personally. Before I played P3P, I knew it was possible to save Shinji. I played the Male route first where you cannot save him, so I experienced his death. While I liked the impact, I decided to see the other side of the coin and saved him in my FeMC playthrough. When I actually got to the point where this happened, I was legitimately shocked by how....meaningless it all was?

What I mean by meaningless is that outside of the different scene with Akihiko mourning over his hospital bed instead of the tribute, and the very end of the game where one person who is optional to talk to who says Shinji woke up from his coma (also the NG+ scene but that’s only if it’s NG+ and you romanced him), all of the dialogue is the absolute same. Don’t get me wrong, the two mourning scenes do have a different “feel” to them and are both executed well, but legitimately there are no difference outside of those 2/3 instances, and 2 of those 3 are completely miss-able. Everyone else acts like he is dead. I don’t know how Atlus messed up so bad with not changing any of the dialogue (which is not even voice acted most of the time), but I’m guessing that they just didn’t want to spend the time on it. Even after one quick search on google, I found another person who asked if they actually saved him because everyone was talking the same.

As I mentioned earlier, I knew it was possible to save him and I also knew it was kind of a divisive topic in the fandom, so after figuring out the real “impact” of saving him I was....so confused. I thought “All of that discourse, over nothing?” I at least suspected that maybe the group would visit him, or he would show up in the base game at the end (not NG+ scene), or at the very least Akihiko or Ken would talk about him as if he was still alive, but nah there’s nothing like that. Obviously the player knows he survived and can imagine maybe what the rest of his life will be, but the game does a shit job at actually making the choice mean anything. Both scenes with Akihiko talking to him are sad and impactful, and the dialogue with Ken’s resolution doesn’t change in the slightest. Honestly, like I said outside of those 2/3 possible scenes, I see absolutely nothing to gain in doing one over the other unless you want to see Akihiko cry in an auditorium or in a hospital room.

On top of all of this, there is also the sentiment that this person wrote, and I believe many others also agree with (in relation to FeMC and P3P. I took out the rest of the post because it wasn’t relevant to this topic at all).

Now, they didn’t elaborate much on this, but after what I just said about how the game doesn’t really make any changes at all and sorting out the “meaning of the game” I’d be really interested to see what their reasoning is. Otherwise, it’s hard to imagine how this “literally ruins Akihiko and Ken” when their dialogue, cutscenes, and growth are 99.9% the same. That part alone is a bit frustrating, but what really gets me is how they don’t like the FeMC at all (or p3p, which was said earlier in another comment by them) because she can do this optional choice?

Obviously, anyone can dislike choices that are optional in a game. That’s just how it goes if you have multiple ways of doing things. Some you’ll like, and some you wont. However, why is it that basically every time I see someone say they don’t like the FeMC it’s because of a choice in the game and not something about her actual character? I really can’t stress enough how insane it is (to me) that people cannot disconnect what you as the player can choose in a game from the actual character. Because, do you know....believe it or not...there are people who play the FeMC route and don’t save Shinji? Or don’t romance Ken? Baffling, I know!

Is the FeMC somehow a better character if Shinji still dies or Ken isn’t romanced? Not to these people, I suppose. Somehow she’s still just as disliked, because the option was there in the first place. I honestly don’t know why this happens, but it’s also complete hypocrisy on their parts. Do they not like Yu for being able to murder Namatame? Or how about Joker, who can enslave all of Tokyo (the world? I don’t know if it’s made clear) if he accepts Yaldy’s deal? It’s very likely they still love those two, or at least one of them.

“But Casual, those don’t matter because they’re not canon!”

Neither is saving Shinji or romancing Ken, so kiss my ass :)

Anyway.

Just to make this clear, this post isn’t meant to bash people who dislike saving Shinji (or perhaps the implications of doing so) or dislike FeMC, but to point out how the game really takes none of this into consideration and that it’s a bit ridiculous for people to dislike FeMC for reasons that they seemingly don’t take into consideration for the other protagonists.

It’s kind of hard to put into words, but I’m just utterly baffled on how much trouble this causes when it’s really worth nothing. I can understand how people who only experienced his death could be affected, but only in the sense that they either think it goes against the “everyone will die” message and/or comprehend Shinji’s impact even after the game/story is over (which is done by their own volition and the game does not hint to at all).

However, at least as far as the game is concerned, both choices result in essentially the same outcome. Sorry, but Shinji’s death doesn’t matter (to the game).

Almost surprisingly, writing this prompt took nowhere near as long as I had expected it to, especially given the fact that I just started it... Oh, an hour or less ago. If it feels rushed and weird, I apologize and blame it entirely upon that. But thank you for the prompt! I absolutely adore this ship, as you well know.

This takes place in an AU where Revenge of the Sith either doesn’t happen, happens much later than it does in canon, or happens differently. Fives didn’t die, Echo was rescued and rejoined the 501st, and they both got married to Tup at separate times through all this. If you have questions about specifics, because I think making the whole thing work is really fun, feel free to hit me up! I hope you like this <3

Ten minutes.

That’s hardly any time at all. Just ten more minutes, and he’ll be back. He’ll be off this ship and back where he belongs. With his legion, his company, his husbands. He’ll be home again.

Oh, Tup is so ready to be home. He’s been missing his brothers and riduur’e something fierce.

It’s been six weeks that he’s been away from them. Six weeks of what Tup can really only describe as Hell. No, it wasn’t all bad. But ARC training isn’t supposed to be easy. If it was easy, everyone would do it.

But they don’t. It’s not for just anyone. It’s for the best of them. The soldiers who’ve proven themselves, gone above and beyond. It’s the second most rewarding kind of torture that Tup has ever experienced, right after the long months in which he pined silently for the men who would become his husbands.

And yikes had that taken a while.

After six weeks away, one would think that Tup could handle another ten minutes. You’d think he wouldn’t be so keyed up and nervous. Six weeks away is an insane amount of time. Anything could have happened between then and now, and Tup wouldn’t know. Okay, maybe that’s not quite true. Tup would have heard about anything important. They weren’t completely cut off during ARC training. In fact, they were actively encouraged to talk to their squads and the vode they’d left behind as much as they could. Within reason, of course.

Truth be told, Tup hadn’t expected that. But after the first few days, he realized why it was encouraged. There wasn’t a lot of free time in when training to become an ARC, mostly because if you weren’t drilling, studying, eating, or being tested, you were probably sleeping. That’s about all the energy Tup had left in his downtime. He slept and when it finally felt as if he’d struck up a good balance of feeling rested without sleeping constantly, then he and the other candidates found their own ways to entertain themselves.

(Tup has played so many impromptu games of hide-and-seek and hidden in the smallest and strangest places, he’s pretty sure he could fit himself into the tiny duct in Torrent’s barracks and never be found.)

The point is, he found time to stay in contact with Fives, Echo, and Rex. It took a bit of time to get figured out, but it happened nonetheless. But he hadn’t had the energy or time to miss them in the past weeks, being as busy and exhausted as he as been. It was sort of nice, in a strange and painful kind of way. It felt less like the world might end at any given moment, despite the fact that he’s aware it wouldn’t have stopped, even if he was at ARC training.

So with only— five minutes left to go, Tup thinks he’s about to vibrate right out of his seat. There’s a buzzing under his skin that he can’t get rid of. No amount of pacing or fidgeting with calm the nerves he feels riling up in his stomach. Sure, he may be an ARC now with more muscle than he’d left with, but he’s still Tup.

Tup is confident, but he’s always been a little bit of a worrier. A nervous kid, as far as clones go. Not for himself, but for others. His batchmates, the members of his squad, his fellow troopers in Torrent company. He worries about his husbands. Yeah, Tup grins easily and plays pranks with the best of them, but he’s nervous, too.

Becoming an ARC didn’t train that out of him. Comes with the territory of having loved ones, Tup supposes.

He’s so lost in thought that he hardly even recognizes when the shuttle lands in the bay. His head jerks up and he shoots from his seat again, eager to get out of the small space. He doesn’t have to wait long. After a second, the door opens with a hiss, folding downwards and ramping to the durasteel floor of the main hangar.

Tup breathes a little easier, seeing Rex standing a few feet from the ramp, waiting for him. He’s not alone, but there’s a twinge of sorrow in his chest when none of the paint matches with the two people he wants to see the most.

Still, he grins seeing his captain and vode again. Tup strides confidently down the ramp, all too aware of the extra weight on his shoulders and hips that his brand new kama and pauldrons have added. His armor is all new and white, freshly painted with Torrent’s ever darkening shade of blue paint. He keeps his helmet tucked securely beneath his arm, even as he comes to a halt in front of Rex and salutes him.

“Captain,” he says, smirking a lopsided grin. Rex returns the look and salute.

“Welcome back, ARC trooper Tup,” the blond man says. It stirs something in Tup’s stomach to hear his captain address him like that. Tup swells with pride, puffing his chest out and titling his chin just slightly higher.

Tup returns to a more relaxed position after that. Torrent new has stood on very much ceremony.

Tup can’t resist turning his head side to side, looking for the two people he wants to see most.

“So how was it?” Rex asks.

“Hell,” Tup responds cheerfully. Rex chuckles.

“Yeah, I remember. Was it as bad as we all made it out to be?”

Tup catches Jesse’s smirk as he comes up and leans into Rex’s shoulder, proudly wearing his own kama.

“No, no,” Tup says with a wave of dismissal. “It was much worse.”

That gets everyone around them busting out in fits of laughter. Tup can’t help but join in, even through his disappointment as his partners not being there to welcome him home.

Finally, he plucks up the courage to ask what’s on his mind. A part of him is worried that he won’t like the answer. Worries that he’s come home to broken pieces that need to be picked up and glued back together again. Assuming there are any pieces left to mend.

“Where are Echo and Fives?” he asks, casting another curious eye around the hanger. They have not magically appeared.

Both Rex’s and Jesse’s faces turn downwards in odd facsimiles of sad frowns. Tup narrows his eyes at them. He doesn’t think they’re about to lie to him, but those aren’t the faces of two brothers with bad news. Those are the faces of two of his brothers who are up to something and trying to convince him that they’re not.

“They’re out on a mission, actually. It couldn’t be helped—”

Tup quirks a brow up at them, shifting his weight to the side and cocking his hip out, full of as much sass as he can muster.

Given the amusement that flashes through both their eyes, Tup isn’t sure if he’s succeeded or not.

“Really? Because I think—”

Two sets of boots clatter suddenly into motion behind him in the same moment two extremely familiar voices cry out in excited greeting. Tup finds himself swept off his feet by two pairs of strong arms hardly before he can even react. Which is slightly embarrassing, given how he has literally just gotten back from ARC training. You’d think he’d be ready and equipped for this!

But he wasn’t. His feet are no longer touching the floor, and he has to throw his arms around someone’s — Fives, he’s pretty sure — shoulders in the hopes of not finding himself on his ass in a few seconds. Echo crushes him between the two of them, squeezing the living daylights out of Tup in a giant bear hug.

Tup wishes he could say it hurts less than it used to when they were both stronger than him. It doesn’t they have perfected this ambush-hug of theirs so that it always takes him off guard. He’s not actually hurting, because neither would really hurt him, but they do knock the breath from his lungs for a second.

Both Fives and Echo are saying things at him, talking loud with cheer in their voices and bright smiles on their faces. They do set him down after a second, but the hug doesn’t end. Tup finds that he hopes it never ends. He’d happily just stay right here, squished in between his lovers for the rest of his life, if he was given the choice. Nowhere has he felt more loved, happy, or accepted than in their arms.

He can’t help the relieved, happy tears that gather in the corners of his eyes, threatening to wet his cheeks.

Six weeks since he’s seen them last. Six weeks since he kissed them. Six weeks since they hugged him.

Six weeks without either of his riduur’e.

It was unacceptable, and Tup hopes to never have to be separated from them for them long again, no matter how irrational that hope may be.

They notice his tears almost before Tup does himself. The hug gentles into something tender and grounding as they both coo praises and love and reassurances at them.

Tup absolutely thinks they’re both dicks for trying to make him think they wouldn’t be here to welcome him home, but that hardly matters. It doesn’t matter because even with their concern and through his tears, Echo gets him to laugh. The three giggle together, they wipe away Tup’s tears before they can spill over. His husbands take turns kissing him over and over again until he’s smiling at them and feeling a little boneless from the love seeping into him even through the plastoid of his armor.

And, okay, maybe he’s still tired, too.

“We missed you,” Echo promises into the back of Tup’s neck after a moment. His hands have found their way into Tup’s half-loose hair. It’s braided back in some not at all intricate design, but it’s still much fancier than when he throws it up into the tight bun he usually prefers.

“I missed you, too,” he says back. Fives smiles at him, brushing the pads of his thumbs over Tup’s cheekbones.

“Look at you,” he says. “Tup, our husband. An ARC trooper.”

“Bet you didn’t see this coming when I was just a shiny on Umbara,” Tup jokes, wiping at his own eyes. “I told you I could do it though.”

Fives’ eyes are so soft as he gazes lovingly at him. Tup feels himself melting just at the expression.

“I always knew you could.”

october date hcs

featuring: aran, hinata, kita, and tanaka

✰ a/n: i haven’t had a lot of time to write lately, but i just had to do something including cute october dates, so i whipped these up ! it’s kind of a random compilation of characters, but they’re the ones that just naturally came to me! this was my first time writing hcs, so i haven’t exactly found my style for them... it’s honestly more of a brain dump, but i hope you still enjoy them <3

✰ OJIRO ARAN ✰

⋆ so apparently it’s canon that aran watches old movies and series, so i am fully convinced that he would want to have a night where you two binge classic horror movies !!

⋆ he’s been doing this since forever, so he already has the perfect lineup that he is very stubborn about changing

⋆ he’s all too excited to include you in his little tradition, however, so this boy is fully prepared with popcorn, snacks, hot chocolate, and of course blankets

⋆ even if you’re not really into horror movies, you can’t help but to think it’s worth it when he can’t contain his excited toothy grin as you settle onto the couch

⋆ he starts with his arm draped over your shoulders, but eventually it falls to rest around your waist. he has the habit of absentmindedly rubbing circles into the skin just under the hem of your shirt

⋆ you find yourself watching his face more than the movie. it’s cute how he’s totally engrossed in the movie he must have seen a hundred times, and there’s a small smile that stays on his face the whole night. he gets so into that he forgets all about the popcorn, so you find yourself occasionally feeding him pieces

⋆ if you’re the type to point out the inconsistent plot or the character’s illogical decisions, he’ll immediately shush you and place his finger to your lips, telling you to “just enjoy the movie”

⋆ if you’re actually scared, he’ll smile fondly down at you as you bury your face into his chest and he’ll squeeze your side reassuringly. he’ll be honest and tell you when it’s safe to look back at the screen, and when you lift up your head, he’ll plant a swift kiss on your temple

⋆ you really try to fight it, but you eventually fall asleep. despite falling asleep, you still grip the material of aran’s t-shirt with one hand, which causes his heart to swell with affection. as he looks down at your sleeping form, he can’t help but think how he wants you to be a permanent part of his little tradition

✰ HINATA SHOUYOU ✰

⋆ carving pumpkins !!

⋆ you two had already went on a date to the pumpkin patch to pick out your pumpkins and this boy can not wait any longer to carve it. he whines when you insist on prepping the space with trash bags and such, too excited to get started that he doesn’t care about the aftermath of a mess

⋆ goes in for the pumpkin guts with his b a r e hands, and he tries to persuade you to do the same only saying ‘it feels cool’

⋆ when you finish emptying your pumpkins, you immediately tell him to wash his hands but his teasingly extends them towards you

⋆ “Hinata don’t you dar-“ he does dare. he swipes one hand across your cheek, causing you to scrunch your nose up in disgust. already having one cheek covered with the slimy pulp, you see no reason to not retaliate, so you stick your hand in the bowl you two filled, and throw a piece of pulp in the direction of his face

⋆ your arms end up in a tangled mess as you two continue your cycle of revenge, and the room is filled with your laughter

⋆ after finally calling a truce and cleaning yourselves up, you actually start to carve the pumpkins. It takes forever for hinata to decide what he’s going to do, and your advice of ‘just something scary’ doesn’t work because his immediate answer is kageyama’s face

⋆ he finally settles on a design, but refuses to outline it in pencil first, too eager to start carving. he sticks out his tongue as he focuses on his carving, and you can’t resist placing a kiss on his cheek, which causes pink to dust his cheeks

⋆ he carves with so much exaggerated force, he ends up accidentally cutting off parts he didn’t mean too. looks at you with so much awe when you’re able to reattach them with some toothpicks, and presses an excited kiss to your lips, which causes you to be flustered one

⋆ the night ends with you two cuddled on the couch, his head resting comfortably in your lap as you comb your fingers through his hair.  you can just barely smell the pumpkin seeds you have roasting in the oven, and the room is illuminated by both the television and your jack-o’-lanterns that hinata wanted to keep inside just a little longer

✰ KITA SHINSUKE ✰ 

⋆ kita is more than willing to take you on any type of date you want to go on, but when you mention going to an apple orchard, he can’t hide the glimmer of excitement in his eyes. it’s by far his favorite date to take you on in the fall

⋆ he loves seeing you wrapped up in one of his scarves and placing your conjoined hands in his pocket 

⋆ he’ll whisper little tips to you like how you should pick apples from the outside of the tree if you want the ripest ones. gently scolds you if you just pull the apple away from the tree instead of twisting it upward like he told you. you pretend to not understand so he’s forced to show you by enveloping your hand with his 

⋆ loves how you ask him for his opinion on an apple before you pick it, and you think it’s cute how he inspects every apple again before placing it into your basket

⋆ he gives you frequent kisses on the tip of your nose, and will take breaks where he just holds your two hands in his

⋆ when you have to use the ladder, he always has a reassuring hand on you, ready to steady you if need be

⋆ you pick extra apples to give his grandmother, and fondness fills him when you talk about giving her some of the apple pie you two are planning on making

⋆ when he hears your stomach growl, he’s already looking for the nearest stand selling apple cider and apple cider donuts. he wears a fond smile as he wipes some powder from the corner of your mouth. And when you kiss him, you love the lingering taste of apple cider on his lips. 

✰ TANAKA RYUUNOSUKE ✰

⋆ as soon as september rolled into october, tanaka has talked about taking you to a haunted house, and you can pretty much guess his motives

⋆ he promises you have nothing to be frightened over since you’re with him, and of course you can’t refuse his request

⋆ before you enter, he offers his hand to you, but becomes extremely flustered when you not only grab his hand but also the upper part of his arm, pressing your side to his

⋆ tanaka wasn’t too affected by jump scares and you soon found out why. it was because he was one of those people that sped walked through the experience, peeping around each corner to eliminate the chance for a jump scare

⋆ you chuckled telling him to slow down, which he partly listened to

⋆ gets super defensive when someone pops out on your side, and subconsciously pulls you closer to himself

⋆ he’s that guy that eggs the actors on telling them they’re going to have to do better or that they should go get that fake wound checked out

⋆ when you reach the space containing the guy with the chainsaw, tanaka tenses up, and you thought he was actually scared

⋆ “they must be insane, if they think i’m going to let them chase my s/o” he declares squeezing your hand “i’ll distract them, and you run for it” he tells you squeezing your hand. 

⋆ tanaka is definitely skilled at drawing attention to himself, and it’s easier than you think to run along the side, avoiding being pursued. you turn around just in time to see tanaka sprinting towards you despite the fact the guy has given up on chasing him. you chuckle as he collides with you and urges you to keep on moving. 

⋆ when you reach the end, tanaka lets out an exaggerated sigh saying, “that wasn’t so bad, was it?” you hug him tightly and press a kiss to his lips muttering a “no.” the boy’s cheeks are blazing !

⋆ it’s gotten colder, and when he notices you shivering, he immediately takes off his jacket to give it to you, claiming your kiss gave him all the warmth he needed
