I recently read an article in which Quentin Tarantino stated that fewer movie stars exist as a result of "Marvel movies in Hollywood." I think Jennifer Aniston made a similar argument before saying that there are no longer any movie stars. I'm not sure what that means. I can think of a lot of movie stars right now, such as Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, and Zoey Deutch etc. what do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and Quentin's comments.
QuillBot's
Months ago, when you sent me this ask, anon, I wrote out a really long reply and as soon as I hit post, my laptop crashed and ate the answer, and I was so annoyed at myself for not saving my reply, that I couldn't bring myself to try and re-write an answer. I'm really sorry for that, especially because I think this is such an interesting ask (or well, two asks, because I think the death of the movie star and the impact Marvel's had on the broader concept of a movie star, are kinda two different things).
I've been thinking about it a bit again recently though, particularly as the Oscar race gears up, and Jacob Elordi and Charles Melton''s respective stars are rising in an industry currently desperate to find the new young Hollywood male 'talent', and I've been thinking about it again because honestly?
I agree with Jennifer Aniston, I think the movie star is dead.
We are a long, long way from Golden Age Hollywood where actors like Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe could captivate a public imagination in a way that translated to big box office effect, after all. Hell, we're even out of New Hollywood, an era dominated by names like Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, and Jane Fonda, and the Blockbuster era with Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone and Harrison Ford.
My original reply went into a lot of the different reasoning as to why this is (like with many things, I don't think there's any one reason for it), in particular how the advent of streaming has changed our relationship with films and TV shows, how the saturation of the market has diluted the staying power of celebrities, how social media and the perceived accessibility of celebrities removes personal mystique which in turn removes intrigue and increases a sense of entitlement, and the fact that so many people having stopped going to the cinema means that the experiential element of seeing a film in a setting larger than life has been diminished.
I think call out culture plays a role too, with any actor on the rise being torn down by tweets they made eight, nine or ten years ago impacting how their star rises, I think the dismantling of the studio system (which is a good thing!) also harmed actors in the long run as studios stopped investing the same resources into making and training stars (they used to be able to sing, dance and act! Now some can barely even act!), and I think, of course, the rise of prestige TV changed the industry substantially (after all, movie stars were movie stars - they traditionally did not, and would not, do TV, which created a clear class structure in terms of screen-based storytelling).
And yeah, I think the language shift from film and TV to content has done irrepairable damage to the artistry of filmmaking and the consideration of a movie star as an actor at the top of their field instead of an actor with the most Insta followers or YouTube subscribers (after all, if everything's content, isn't it the same thing? [no lol]).
Which I guess is kind of where Quentin Tarantino's argument comes in, right? What he's saying is that Marvel's made it so that the IP - the content itself - is the star, not the actor, and I'd say he's probably right with that.
Think of it this way - back in the New Hollywood/Blockbuster era, Harrison Ford was the movie star - he was leading new franchises left-right-and-centre between Star Wars and Indiana Jones, sci fi epics like Blade Runner, leading action thrillers like Patriot Games, The Fugitive and Clear and Present Danger and getting nominated for Oscars for Witness.
He was a movie star in every sense of the word because you could hinge a film - one with a new concept, not just remakes or sequels - on him and be virtually guaranteed a success. He was what sold the tickets, the director just hopefully had to make something good enough people would leave the cinema glad they saw.
Tarantino's argument is the Marvel model - - hell, even the new Star Wars properties, turned the franchise into the star, for better or worse, which means original films can't compete because nobody knows the IP. Back when Harrison Ford was at the top of his game, his name was what helped original films including smaller, standalone works like Witness find an audience, but the studios have changed that. Capitalism has changed that.
Properties with existing audiences and deep pockets for merch were prioritised, only now those franchises are faltering and you've got a generation trained that 'cinematic events' are reserved for blockbusters in established universes, instead of taking a risk on a new film because you know you love an actor who's in it.
Do I think we could go back?
Maybe, but probably not.
I think the place we are now in the history of cinema / TV / 'content' means you can't make a movie star anymore because I think the industry is simply so different that no actor can break through in the same way that even Leonardo DiCaprio could 30 years ago. That industry doesn't exist anymore, actors aren't guaranteed draws (Bones and All proved that for Timothee Chalamet, and Wonka I think could go a similar way), or they have to heavily rely on other industries to become household names which I think dilutes them as a pure 'movie star' (Zendaya's a great example of this - I like her a lot, but how many movies has she even been in? They built her career up in peripheral industries long before they tried to sell her as a movie star, and frankly, I'd question her even as a leading actress yet given she's typically only either been in ensemble casts or clear supporting).
It's a whole new world, and yeah, I think the movie star is dead.

you ripped off your entire "theory" about LO being made for kids from Pyrrhic Victoria's latest video lol. Word for word, that's pretty hypocritical but then I guess that's to be expected from the person who still financially supports Webtoon and LO even though you've based your entire image off how much you supposedly hate LO
Tumblr media
if I "ripped off" P&V then this is news to me because I've only watched each one of their videos once (they're long and they cover a SHITLOAD of topics, bruh) and it's been ages, BUT-
This honestly makes for a great segue to talk about opinion sharing in the fandom in general because ima be honest with you, there's like... only so much you can talk about in the LO crit community. Like as much as we make fun of the stans for all sharing one echo chamber of opinions, the ULO community isn't that much different in the sense of like, having the same takes and opinions about the topic we've chosen to unite on and being hyper passionate about it to the point of having the same conversations at least ONCE per week. Like it's just a webcomic about pink and blue people, a lot of takes are pretty much the exact same and that's not a BAD thing but ... both P&V and I have been in the ULO stratosphere for AGES now so ?? There's only SO MUCH to cover about LO before it all starts blurring together lmao I can't "own" an opinion, and they undoubtedly know that they can't "own" any one specific opinion either, especially within a fandom like this. C'mon now.
"LO is made for babies" or "LO is marketed to children" is also one of the way more common takes, that's like saying I'm ripping off panel redraw accounts for doing my own panel redraws. LO's been compared to other things that are commonly marketed to children like MCU films, Disney movies/shows, etc. time and time again because that's been SUPER common knowledge for YEARS now prior to any of us joining the community, regardless of "who joined first", it's literally WT's entire business model and it's pretty plainly obvious. The specific comparison I made was just one that came to me during a ramble on stream the other night and I wanted to put it to paper because that's what I do here. If that specific comparison has been made in the past already in a 3 hour video that I completely forgot/didn't realize, then great! I'm not the only one who came to this conclusion! Thanks for the validation!
Tumblr media
None of this is with shade at P&V or even you, btw, I think it's honorable you want to stand up for them if you enjoy their stuff and I can't harp on you for that but like... this ain't it? Y'all gotta understand this community is still HELLA small as far as fandom culture goes, we all know everybody, have helped build these parts of the community together from cardboard and glue whether or not we still directly affiliate with each other, and share many of the same takes and schools of thought that stem back YEARS before even WE were in the community ourselves so it's kinda silly to try and point fingers at any one person and say "abc is ripping off xyz!" esp when the "ripping off" is just like, having the same opinion about something? A lot of both our takes also intersect with takes from other antiLO accounts and channels that pre-existed theirs and my own. It's a fandom, after all, no single person can lay claim to any specific opinion we're all coming from many of the same schools of thought with foundations that pre-exist us, it's just different people delivering their own unique spins on takes that have been heard many times before. Some of us do re-imaginings, some of us do panel edits, some of us just crack great jokes about it. We're not all pals with each other, we're not even all from the same platforms or community bubbles, but I think we're all pretty familiar with each other's content and what each one of us is about for the most part.
Tumblr media
I know you're likely not gonna take "trust me" as a promise that I'm not ripping anyone off, but like... trust me, I'm not sitting here sifting through P&V's 15+ hour video backlog and going "huehuehue I'm gonna steal this!" because I would gain nothing from doing that and their content is ultimately just part of a bigger genre of topics and opinions that are constantly being re-assessed and re-discussed as the comic goes on, they were just the first ones to make an ongoing Youtube series about it (which is commendable in and of itself with how much content they've made around it, most other Youtubers just review it once in 20-90 minutes and call it a day).
P&V's contributions to these discussions have their own personal unique flair to them but the opinions themselves aren't all brand new revelations. Back when I still watched their videos, their alternate scenarios as to how something could be written were pretty neat because it came with their own unique experiences and viewpoints as webcomic creators which isn't something you'll find on every other account. But "LO is marketed to children and here's why" isn't exactly one of those takes because it's one we've all talked about in the community LONG before those videos even existed. And it's been talked about since before any of us were in the community, period. So... yeah, that's pretty much all I have to say on that lmao it's not that complicated, there's no "conspiracy" going on here, it's a Tumblr post about something that's already been talked about in the past by many others, my guy.
Tumblr media
As a closing note, accusing me of being hypocritical on the basis of something you don't even have facts on like "financially supporting Webtoons and LO" is such a silly hill to die on, c'mon pal. You want me to stand here and tell you my side of it as if you're even gonna believe me? Because even if I do say "actually, I no longer even have the Webtoons app on my phone and I can't even remember the last time I paid for coins on the app because all the series I usually FP nowadays are on hiatus and I stopped FP'ing LO back at the start of S3" are you really gonna believe me? Did you even bother to read through the majority of this post? You want receipts or something? What do you want from me? I got nothing to hide, but I'm not gonna sit here and try to explain myself to someone hiding behind an anon filter who's already decided I'm a hack so idk what you want 🤣 Even if I did still FP the series, what then? There are people in this community who do still FP to keep up on content so they can keep talking about it, why is that a crime all of a sudden? Since when did this become some kind of weird "prove you're loyal" indoctrination? Or are you just mad my takes are basic?

how about 23
23 is Herba, and as her name might suggest, she’s very in tune with nature. she’d be a druid if she were to be a D&D class. she’s the type of person to find dying plants at a home depot and bring them home and revitalize them. she lives in an apartment and it is full of plants and she probably has a garden in her bathroom she lives off of so she doesn’t spend an absurd amount of money on groceries

general 7 and 11 and story specific 6 for balaerra please!
thank you so much for asking romeo 💕💕
7. Do they have their own personal quest that spans the course of the game? Can it take different branching paths depending on the choices the Player Character makes?
Oh this is going to be a messy ramble because I haven't fully worked out what her quest would be, but the general gist I have right now at least is that it would involve her and her teacher, and the fall out of what he tried to do to.
For context, her teacher as I'm considering right now was a lich (or something similar) who would take in apprentices and train them until their skill was at a certain level, and then he would kill them and either a. simply consume their essence himself, or b. he would do that and also take their bodies for himself to curtail the common lich giveaway of the skeletal appearance and continue to escape death. This is a very edgy plot, but I think it's fun lol.
After some time in Act 1, Balaerra would remark on 'hearing something' and soon enough it would be revealed his spirit is somehow attached itself to her, or haunting her, and will have to explain he tried to kill her and so she killed him shortly before she got grabbed by the mindflayers and infected.
I don't know exactly how it would all play out yet, or how all the endings would be beyond the ending where you allow him to take over her body, in which case during the epilogue scene given that you destroyed the elder brain, you would see 'Balaerra' off the distance nodding at your character before walking through the gates into the city.
I've been playing around with different ideas as well, such as possibly making that wizard in Baldurs Gate her former teacher which I decided not to go with, replacing him with my own special oc bc I'm god's specialist princess who can do as I want, which I also decided not to go with lol, or make her teacher a possible acquaintance of that wizard for funsies, which I'm still debating on. Also she could possibly be wanted for murder in Baldur's Gate because of murdering her teacher, and it could be something Enver Gortash leverages to get the player to work with him. Lots of idea in the soup cooking.
11. Are there any moments in the game that trigger unique dialogue for your character? (Like Gale’s anecdote about the barfight after you save the goblin prisoner)
Hm… there would obviously be recognizing Karlach, but for a smaller one, and I don't know if it would work, but I think it would be very cute if when encountering a cat at some point, Balaerra will remark on them being lovely creatures and, possibly, learning about her affection and how it started with an old cat in Baldur's Gate that would sleep on her and keep her warm when she still lived on the streets. It'd probably be too clunky to put in but it's cute to me 💕
6. Will they stay with the Player Character regardless of siding with the goblins or the tieflings, or is it possible for them to leave the party permanently?
She will stay whether or not the player sides with the goblins or tieflings. However it is possible for her to leave the party if she is present at any scene where the player attacks Karlach, as she will either recognize her former friend and refuse to hurt her, or the player would have turned against Karlach at some point and Balaerra will resolve to kill you and take the prism herself after you're dead. Either way, a fight will break out and she will have to be either killed or knocked unconscious.

Any suggestions for surviving/thriving in academia while neurodivergent? I’m in my third year of a doctoral program and I’m starting to feel burnt out despite knowing that I love what I’m studying
oh friend, you are preaching to the choir here.
first off-- idk what your doctorate is intending to be in but I AM SO PROUD OF YOU for pursuing this. the world is in need of more ND individuals in highered. *shakes hand aggressively*. You're in third year and still here, and that's amazing.
second off. my biggest tip for ND folk in academia is go at your own pace. make your own fucking pace and work at it. the curriculum and syllabi were not made thinking of you. the pace of higher ed courses and the design of assignments are made for neurotypical folk who work a certain way, and not for us.
more below cut
so, what do we do? we work when we can. if you are in flow and in a place where you can work--WORK. don't fight the flow, don't stop just because you've completed the readings/papers whatever are due that week or imminently. just keep working until you feel yourself out of flow. WORK with your hyperfocus, not against it. if you get something done that's not due for another two weeks? So be it.
look at your syllabus, mark down when things are due and that's it. set your own fucking pace, and your own schedule to meet those deadlines. similiarly-- do you know how many folk ask for extensions regularly? a lot. if your flow didn't vibe with something that's due ASAP, ask for an extension (and if you KNOW ahead of time that no extensions will be granted, then prioritize getting those things done).
and while i know it seems impossible with all the deadlines and the pressures (and idk if yours is clinically based either and you have HOURLY requirements to meet etc etc, but throw that into the ring), make time to read in your area of interest for FUN. i just read a book i didn't need to read for anything but added to my body of research and it was a great decision. remind yourself why you love the work.
Turn off the noise (and sometimes that means turning off NT classmates who manage stress very differently than ND folk), keep your head down, do the work.
oh.
also. make one day a week a rest week. (usually this is friday for me) a day for regenerating. rest is not a punishment. you need it to continue and sometimes i find that i am most inspired and work on assignments mentally when i am resting and just take a second to breath.
(and...you know.
coffee)
get to know the blogger--ask me anything

literally sooo fascinated by logan and caroline's marriage tbh. give us all your thoughts!! (if you want ahah)
Oh, man, I could talk about them all day, haha. I kinda feel like people can sometimes rob both Caroline and Logan of any nuance, because yeah, sure, they’re often the central antagonists of the series, and their abuse and neglect of their children permeates the series, but the show’s always also been careful to show that the cycle of violence never started with Logan, and Harriet Walter’s talked in interviews too about the cycle of neglect not starting with Caroline either. They’re victims and perpetrators in the same way that Kendall, Roman and Shiv are victims and perpetrators, and the fact that neither of them were able to break that cycle is the exact sort of tragedy that's at the broken heart of this series.
It makes it really fascinating to me in that sense that Caroline and Logan found each other at all, and I think really slots into what we know about his three marriages – namely, that he marries women who are in some ways as damaged by life’s cruelties as he is. We understand that explicitly with Marcia, who pretty much says out loud that their connection has been born out of the fact that they’re both survivors, but I think it’s implied in his relationships with both Caroline and Connor’s mother too. At least Marcia and Connor’s mother became somethink like partners for a while too – Marcia was a co-conspirator with Logan for the bulk of season 1, and the RECNY Ball episode I think also showed that Connor’s mother, for at least a while, was the sort of socialite who could lubricate and work politicians alongside Logan.
We don’t really know what role Caroline played in that sense, but she’s obviously intelligent and savvy enough to have worked to secure the kids real power in the divorce, something we see her give back to Logan in 3.09. We also know that her title gave Logan the class elevation that he wanted (even if its one he also seems to bitterly resent), and that his money gave her security, and in a lot of ways, that’s a strategic match that sees them both step forwards in power together.
I was actually listening to an old episode of Vanity Fair’s Succession podcast recently where they interviewed Dame Harriet Walter, and she talks quite a lot about Caroline’s backstory.
She says that Caroline was born into a neglectful aristocratic family, an only daughter who due to the social structures of British aristocracy, wouldn’t have inherited her father’s estate as a result of her gender. Instead, his estate would’ve gone to a distant male cousin, which ties into what Connor says in 1.09 to Willa about the house being the ancestral home Caroline didn't inherit.
She was disregarded by her family but encouraged to marry rich, and she sees Caroline as having gone through a bit of a wild child phase, that she partied, used drugs, tried to escape herself. That she was probably featured frequently in the social columns ‘in disgrace’, and then married young to a rich British man who bored her. She sees Caroline as having escaped to New York on a trip, and met Logan who dazzled her. Who was the opposite of the men she’d grown up with, the men who’d cut her out of her own inheritance, and that he was exciting and creating something and married too, and that they likely left their spouses for each other. That he married for a title, but he also married her because he found her fun and funny and different from the other women of her class and station.
I actually love that backstory a lot, and in particular I think it feeds into the themes of cycles on this show, both with Shiv, but also in Caroline being cut out by her own family, and then cut out by the one she tried to make for herself, and the damage that likely caused her. It also I think really beautifully depicts this idea of legacy and succession which is so crucial to the show – that Logan can spend a childhood brutalised by a man who’d give him just enough to build an empire on and that Caroline can spend a childhood in luxurious neglect with parents who will leave her with nothing.
What that meant for their relationship - - I think they did love each other, as much as they could love anyone, and I think that vulnerability between them was something that probably allowed them as true an intimacy as they’d ever have for a while. I also think that that vulnerability and that intimacy gave them power over one another that they’d use often and likely cruelly, and that the final years of their marriage were probably torturous for both of them.
After all, at the end of the day, Logan had the wealth Caroline could marry but never inherit, and Caroline had the title Logan could marry but never inherit, and what is that if not a reminder of the poisoned soil they sprung from?

O & Q please!
Thank you for the delightful ask, doll!!
O. How do you begin a story -- with the plot, or the characters?
I definitely need to know the plot first. LOL. Even though I'm more of a "gardener" than an "architect," if I don't have a pretty clear idea in my head of the story I'm trying to tell, I can try and try to write, but either (1) nothing happens and/or (2) what little I do end up writing is complete and utter garbage. (That being said, if I don't feel like I can "hear" the characters' voices in my head as I write, I'm usually not even tempted to write either.)
Q. Do you have any discarded scenes/storylines/projects?
Perhaps not discarded, but definitely backburnered for sure. I definitely still wanna write a Tattoo artist Fexi AU story at some point, but I'm gonna finish up Private Dancer first and then pivot back to Prairie Doll (it's been so neglected! 🥺🥺🥺) before I get into the weeds with anything new. (Unless inspo strikes and I wind up picking up/finishing off any of the WIPs I have in my other fandoms, but right now, Fexi is definitely driving the train!)
Thank you so much for talking to me!!! I hope you have an amazing weekend!!! 🥰🥰🥰

A Swap AU : Newtopia
Here is my version of the popular swap AU. You can also interpret that drawing as if all three of them fall at Newtopia.
Sasha : Sasha wasnt directly found by the royal army. In fact, she tried to escape them and survive like a street rat for one month. When she was finally caught, Yunan was very impressed by her tenacity and proposed to train her by becoming her apprentice.
Sasha had no choice to accept but she quickly learnt to love it. By the following months, she became one of the best soldier of the city and respected by everyone. She also learnt how to manage her anger.
Sasha didnt struck a deal with Andrias, she truly wanted to return home with the others but Andrias didnt want to let go a good host, so he tricked Sasha to test a new armor and so the Core took possession of her. Sasha was so rebellious that the Core was obligated to put her in the deepest pit of her subconcious but nothing can stop a warrior trained by the General Yunan.
Anne : Anne wasn't very quiet and got directly caught by the royal army. She was brought by Andrias and when he saw the box in the hands of the human, he finally knew it was the time. He welcomed Anne with big open arms by giving to her everything she wanted.
Quickly, Anne became the most trending person in the city. She bought everything she wanted, nobody couldn't tell "no" to her. She frequented the high aristocracy but was always supervised by Lady Olivia. The latter became like a new mother figure for Anne, she couldn't tell her "no" but tried everything to set the young girl in the righteous path.
Andrias knew how to exploit Anne's flaws. He forced her to retrieve the stone by promising to her he will give to the three girls the best life he can afford. Anne was very tempted but she finally missed her home and family. The Core wasn't very happy with that statement, so they convinced Andrias to give to Anne some "brainwashing" session until she will be ready to be a host.
The Core took possession of her mind and body but wasn't put in a mind prison, instead she was welcomed by the Core's inhabitants until her desire to break free catches the attention of some rebellous individual like Igor the Brave.
If you have any question about that AU, feel free to use my AMA.

Japanese Q Speedround: Google Is Right There
Hi, it’s mod Rina. It’s time to speedrun some asks.
@troublsomeidiots asked:
I'm writing a character who is both black and Japanese and lives in japan in a primarily Japanese area and wanted some help in writing a person who is biracial who lives in primarily homogenous society? Like what kind of struggles she would face, especially as a person who has never met anyone who is black other than in passing?
Open Youtube. Hit search bar on Youtube. "being black in japan" "half black half japanese in japan" "black hafu in japan". Try different combinations of keywords. Bon voyage.
(neither Marika nor I are Black. We will not be speaking to experiences we do not have.) (we can outsource to some of our friends if you ask a specific question. These are not specific questions.)
(Black Japanese readers--please feel free to comment if there’s something you want OP to know!)
@layzeal asked:
Hello! I have a question regarding family/last names in Edo period Japan. My story takes place in 1816, my character was born in 1796 from a commoner family (that she gets separated from a few years later, and in a different country).
I've read that regular people in Japan didn't adopt the use of family names until Meiji restoration, but I'm not sure how true that is. Would a family of commoners in that period carry a family name, or would they only use their first names? And any idea if that family would have to present a last name when moving/passing by a different country that does use them?
It's important for me to know, since the existence of a last name or not would quite heavily influence how hard it'd be for the family to meet again, and which means would be used. Thanks in advance!
When I gave Google some keywords from your query, the second result explained how pre-Meiji commoners without family/clan names used bynames to distinguish themselves, and gives additional data on them. Maybe give it another Google?
@weavefeather asked:
Hello, I am a writer and I really need some advice. I am wotking on my book since a few years, maybe 2 or 3, and I finally got the points together how it could begin. My plan is that my MC (named Nanami Kudo) is an lawyer of the FBI and has to go to her homecountry Japan, beacuse they send her to foreign investigations about a syndicate of people.....  And the some things happen, like her brother who still lives in jp doesn't really welcomes her, some complications with the police and so on...
But thats not the point! Im really struggling to take in words how she gets to the other country, leaving her home behind and her partner she worked with. Do you have any advice on it, maybe how to structure it, some words or scenarios that fit?
How she gets to the other country: …..She flies there.
