I’m tired of seeing people on TikTok (or any other social media platform, really) put down or berate others for their opinions or beliefs.

For example…

I saw an innocent video of a girl reading some scripture from her Bible and just talking about a dream she had. Not harming anyone, right? Apparently not…

I can’t tell you how many comments I saw of people from other religions putting her down and just flat out making fun of her belief. As a Christian, it did hurt seeing my faith being treated the way it was in that comment section.

But, here’s another example…

I saw another video of this girl showing off some of her crystals and tapestries that she had gotten, and I thought they looked neat! I liked the video, and went to leave a comment about where she got them, when I saw some other messages.

Basically to sum up what they were saying is that if she kept doing the blasphemous things she was doing she’d go to hell, and other hateful things.

It also hurt seeing her being put down/being for her opinions/beliefs, when she wasn’t even doing anything wrong or hurtful to another religion!

DONT 👏 PUT 👏 OTHERS 👏 DOWN 👏 FOR 👏 THEIR 👏 OPINIONS 👏 OR 👏 BELIEFS👏 OR 👏 RELIGION👏

STOP IT.

It’s rude. And you aren’t “saving” anyone by doing it either.

The same things goes for people who flat out just make videos hurtfully ridiculing a comment or person for their own religion. (Not just Christians or Satanists.)

Being a Satanist or an Atheist doesn’t make someone a devil worshipper. If someone is a Satanist, it doesn’t mean they’re in a cult. It simply means they worship mainly themselves or act as their own god. (Which isn’t right in my opinion, but who am I to tell them what to do?)

If someone is an Atheist, that doesn’t make them anymore wayward than the rest of us. They may not worship the Lord, but that doesn’t mean we should treat them like dirt or anything less than a human being.

Same thing goes for any other religion.

I have friends that come for other religions, and they’re some of the nicest/awesome people I’ve met! Sure, we don’t see eye to eye on a few things, but that’s okay! It doesn’t mean I should end a relationship over a little disagreement.

Also, I’ve also seen some controversial takes on people of the LGBTQIA+ community, and as a Christian, it intrigues me to listen to them, as I am a member of that community.

I’ve heard some people say that all who are apart of or even support the LGBTQIA+ community should go to hell, which I think is a bit rash. I’ve also seen people who say they just need forgiveness, but I’m curious, what do they need to be forgiven of?

I know in the Bible it says homosexuality is a sin, but ever since humanity fell, we’ve been stuck in sin’s (or the devil’s) trap, and I believe we won’t be able to get out of said trap until Jesus comes back. (The Rapture, The Second Coming, call it what you like.)

I can’t help the way I am, and you can’t just convert me to become straight just like that. I am very happy with Mia, and she is with me, and there is no way I’d leave her, for any faith.

And you know what, I respect your opinion if you think I’m wrong. I won’t say anything against it. Wanna know why? I’ve been taught and brought up my whole life to be kind to others, even if they don’t deserve it. And yes, I forget that sometimes, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be respectful towards them.

Especially if it’s about their beliefs or religion.

Why Catnap/Theodore worships the Prototype

This theory contains spoilers for Poppy Playtime Chapter 3. Buckle up, this post is not short. tw for mentions of abuse, many mentions of Christianity/Catholicism and its teachings, enforced religious (specifically Christianity) doctrine, mentions of fictional torture/punishment and inhumane experiments

I’ve seen a few people noticing Catnap/Theodore Grambell was…religious in his devotion to the Prototype, and asking why he’s like this. There’s some hints and pieces to put together that puzzle

1. Catnap uses many words/phrases associated with Christianity (and pretty much all of its branched off religions) to refer to the Prototype and what he means to him. Such as:

• “Salvation”- which means liberation/given freedom from suffering, sin, and evil (referring to the experiments being done on the children by the scientists) This word is used 114 times in the Old Testament of the Bible

• “Rejoice in Him” - Luke 1:47: “and my spirit rejoices in God my savior”

• “my somniferous flock” - referring to Jesus, the son of God, being a shepherd of sheep and also his disciples (yes this does imply Catnap sees himself as a higher being, but only after he is turned into Catnap)

2. Having a shrine to the Prototype, and holding his hands up in prayer/worship to him, like a priest or pastor (or now that I look at it, like Jesus is depicted in many statues)

3. Punishing “heretics” like Dogday, who don’t believe in Catnap’s belief that the Prototype is their savior (this honestly even resembles crucifixion {a punishment used against criminals in the time of the origins of Christianity} with Dogday being held up in a ✝️-like position)

But again, why does he do this? Theodore Grambell seems like a normal child up until then.

We gotta look at the location of Playtime Co.

Now, we haven’t yet been given an exact location, but in a poster in one of the prior chapters it says the Midwest, referring to the Midwestern region in America

doing a few google searches, I found this

Catholic churches, and (I’m assuming the orphanages they hosted) run on donations, and that’s why they are not taxed by the states that they’re in. Oftentimes these orphanages had extremely poor conditions because of low funding and in turn high rates of abuse and even death of the children.

Playtime Co. could’ve bought out countless Catholic orphanages with “donations” to the churches they’re connected to. This would’ve been extremely easy with the lack of regulations and the power of money

There aren’t anymore traditional orphanages in the states today, but 300 is not a number to scoff at. And I’m aware that orphanages in the USA were all closed by 1960, but Poppy was created in 1950. I believe that MOB Entertainment got wonky with the timeline for storytelling purposes because creating Living Sentient Toys in 1950 does not align with real life technological advancements.

What I’m getting at is: I believe Theodore Grambell and other orphans were bought from Catholic orphanages (not all of them of course, just a good chunk of the orphans). Either that, or Theodore was an orphan attending a Catholic school, who was then bought out by Playtime Co.

Think about it, at first, the Playcare must’ve been like heaven to little Theo, especially in comparison to the possible abuse he experienced due to being raised in a Catholic orphanage. Everything is colorful. The adults are so nice and caring, unlike those mean and strict nuns. There’s even toys who can talk and interact with them! All of their needs are provided for, and there’s even dedicated areas to play and have fun!

but then Theo probably starts to see the cracks in this oasis, this heaven:

• Playcare is literally underground and the children are not allowed to go outside

• Anytime one of the children experiences something horrific or abnormal because of a feature of Playcare/Playtime Co. (like Marie Payne who become Mommy Longlegs, or the mentioned “Kevin” in the third tape found in Ch.3) they’re never seen again

• The orphans being said “selected” by the doctors, instead of saying that they were adopted, in I believe the 4th tape

And definitely a lot of other signs I haven’t mentioned, because there must’ve been much more than just what’s been listed.

So Theo starts to get a little wary of what’s around him, a little less trusting of the adults who have been taking care of him and his fellow orphans. This place becomes a little less like heaven and a little more false.

but then he meets a friend!!!!

A friend that only interacts with him. A friend that is only seen by him, only heard by him, that disappears whenever anyone else comes around. A friend that people don’t believe is real. A friend that sees and hears everything. A friend that gives him little missions because that friend has deemed him worthy of them.

Do you know who that friend sounds like?

God. Or one of the angels sent by God.

THEN on one of these missions, Theodore accidentally gets hurt. He’s electrocuted and close to dying, but his friend who was watching over him saves him from death.

And even after Theo almost dies, he stills tries his hardest to complete these missions give to him by his friend. Because why wouldn’t he? This friend is so special. This friend saved his life because Theo almost died trying to complete the mission he gave him. This friend who is so knowing to the point of being “divine”. This friend who is so similar to the “God” that the nuns he spent his early days with talked about nonstop, he has to be Him.

This leads to Theo being found out and taken as a test subject himself, and subsequently being turned into Catnap; which meant going through horrific and painful experiments. Theo may interpret this as “punishment from following the words and teachings of his God” (definitely an equivalent of Jesus being tortured before his death on the cross), so he might consider himself a bit of a martyr.

Now Theo is no longer a little human boy. Theo is Catnap, and Catnap is much more powerful than humans. He became Catnap because he followed what his Lord told him to do. He was reborn as Catnap because he was such a devoted follower, and now he can complete his Lord’s work even better than he could as a human (literally paralleling Jesus being resurrected).

If we want to get even deeper into this theory and the Christianity parallels, look at Theo’s age and when Catnap was created. It says on the wiki that he was born in the 1980s, and he’s 7 at the time he’s introduced to Playtime Co, which means the year is now 1987. Catnap is made in 1990. That’s 3 years. Jesus after he was beaten, tortured, crucified, and killed, was sealed in a cave. It took 3 days for Jesus to resurrect.

So yeah, Theo was a kid from a Catholic orphanage that was bought out by Playtime Co., who was indoctrinated into Catholicism because he was taught it at such a young age. He’s freed from a hell of an orphanage, to be brought to a false heaven, which leads him to meet his God. That’s why Catnap acts the way he does.

Hi!

I hope that you had a great week and that the long weekend is going great!

Sorry I’m sending you an anon ask, I don’t like doing it because I would rather have a debate around this, but as often with unpopular (one might say controversial in some space) opinion, I know I may be branded as someone I don’t feel I am.

My question will be about the laïcité in Quebec. To sum it up, so you can have a good idea of what my position is before asking you my questions, I don’t not support the full laïcité, French-style, like I don’t support it in hospitals, public administration, like if you want to display your religion as a doctor, I think that you should be able to, as long as it doesn’t interfere with your job (i.e. refusing to practice an abortion because of your religion is not ok, in my opinion).

But for the schools, to be transparent, I am a teacher near Montréal, I teach in secondary, and I’d be inclined to agree with the laïcité of the public school. All of it. I feel like the school system should be a safe space for all kids, and by letting religion, and religious practices inside a public school, we are failing at this mission. I don’t care if you are religious, the job of a school and a teacher is to teach you, regardless of your personal beliefs. Like if you’re a Christian and you don’t want to believe in evolution, well that’s your choice, but you’re still gonna learn about it because this is the reality of our world, and your beliefs system shouldn’t interfere with that. And I don’t want, as a teacher to have to put disclaimer in front of all my classes.

So my question is: why are people (especially left leaning people) so against it? Because education is usually one of the center piece of the fight for tolerance and acceptance but I feel like we’re failing at providing a safe space for kids that grow up in extremely religious household and that would like to get out of it but don’t because of family and peer pressure.

I am not stupid, so if the answer is : because it disproportionately target people from specific faiths that may have to wear visible clothing (i.e. Muslim and Jewish), I guess you are right, but I think it is more important to provide a safe space for kids that want to escape religions.

I may have a bias, as I grew up in a very religious household (evangelical Christians) and my dad was a pastor so I never really had a say in it. I got out of it in the university, but I really wish the public school system would have helped me get out of it sooner.

The result was alienation of the Muslim and Jewish students. You should remember that is the original intent of this legislation is not to protect anyone's rights but to remove them. They are telling Muslims "Leave your religion at the door, or you're not a part of society." This is the practical impact of this legislation, and nothing else. You are harming more students than you are 'saving''. Additionally, your worry that Muslims having a prayer room somewhere in the building is a religious imposition on other students, in your imaginary likely atheist ones, is based in islamophobia. The idea that parents can somehow enforce their children to practice at school just because there is a room that allows them to literally makes no sense either. Your concerns are misplaced." "Removing Muslims' ability to have a room to pray in at their school does not remove any mechanism by which parents can use to force their child to perform religious duties they do not want to do. But what it does is continue the operation of an increasingly hostile and alienating system in Quebec that wants Muslims to know they're not welcome in their own country. Would you seek the outlawing of abortion because many men force their partners to undergo them when they don't want to? No? Why? Because it's a basic human right to have access to that service. Hail Thyself: Satan is Not a Jealous God

I don’t know who needs to hear this right now, but here it goes: Satan is not a jealous god.

Based on my experiences, Satan is fine with people honoring and working with other deities, demons, spirits, and entities. Satan does not demand worship, praise, or offerings from people, including those of us who believe in him. In fact, if you’re the kind of person who connects with deities through offerings, Satan would prefer you give offerings when it suits you and when you feel moved to do so, regardless of whether that’s in a ritual or in the moment. Working with demons will familiarize you with Satan’s many aspects. It’s true that demons are capable of good and bad, creation and destruction, positivity and negativity, etc. Nonetheless, anyone can easily say that about MANY other deities, including and especially Yahweh himself.

The Bible describes Yahweh as jealous and vengeful when his demands aren’t fulfilled. In The Bible, Yahweh repeatedly gets jealous and angry when people worship other gods. So, it makes sense to me that many people who come from a Christian religious background feel hesitant to work with other spirits, practice witchcraft, engage in the occult, and otherwise pursue their spirituality in the way they feel drawn to beyond a biblical paradigm.

Thus, I want to encourage you to honor and commune with the deities, demons, and spirits you feel like reaching out to. So long as you treat them with love and respect, they will most likely do the same for you. Love and respect are also what you should expect in return from the beings you work with.

Keep in mind: I am a Theistic Satanist and Demonolatress. I believe that Satan is the demonic creator of the universe who inspirits the whole of creation, and all demons are aspects of this demonic divinity. I also believe that all deities are manifestations of Satan. I know for a fact I’m not the only one who holds these beliefs. To us, Satan is the whole, so it only makes sense to me that Satan wants humanity to be whole as well. Contrary to popular belief, many of us feel more whole when we maintain connections with multiple spiritual beings as opposed to just one. To me, telling someone they should only work with one god is like telling them they should only have one lover or one friend: While that might work for some of us, many people (myself included) prefer to have more than one partner and friend. That kind of cookie-cutter approach to spirituality is bound to go wrong when we live in a world full of individuals with complex, varying needs, ideas, and beliefs.

Each demon represents a different aspect of Satan that will teach us about ourselves, the world we live in, and perhaps even the universe at large if they feel inclined to do so. I believe that the relationship someone has with a specific demon is unique, yet that connection still ultimately comes from Satan. Demons know that they are greatly feared by many people (especially religious people), but they have repeatedly shown me that they are willing to help and empower those of us who approach them in good faith. I’ve also found that demons also appreciate any effort you expend on unlearning any toxic behaviors, beliefs, or notions rooted in religion that you might’ve picked up along the way in life. These efforts especially benefit those of us who strive to practice Theistic Satanism and Demonolatry.

Sometimes, you might not have the right chemistry or connection with certain beings, such as a particular demon, and that’s okay. A demon/spirit/deity rejecting you isn’t all that bad when there are plenty of others who’d love to be involved with you and your practice. Just remember that any spirit who works against your best interest isn’t your ally. If a spirit is actively creating any problems in your life, you should banish it immediately. I’ve seen a lot of newcomers get caught up in the drama of getting vivid manifestations from malicious/evil spirits, all while those spirits continue to wreak total havoc in their lives. There is no need to put up with that! You can experience the same intense synchronicities, manifestations, and results from working with spiritual beings that respect you and your well-being.

I realize that many people, including myself, come to Theistic Satanism and Demonolatry with a background that contains some degree of involvement with at least one of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). As for myself, before I began practicing witchcraft and paganism in my preteen years, I held the same general Christian beliefs that my parents had. And still, after about 20 years of practicing, I sometimes find my worldly and spiritual behavior being impacted by the toxic elements of Christianity I internalized before I became cognizant enough to resist it. Even though I began moving away from Christianity early on in my life, I definitely see how being socialized into a certain religion during childhood can have long-lasting effects on how you interact with spirituality and religion in the future.

So, I wanted to remind whoever needs to hear it: You are not a bad practitioner for dealing with the toxicity handed to you by the Christianity you internalized early on in life. You are not a bad practitioner if you’re still dealing with the internalized religious toxicity you learned so long ago, after all of these years. There is a reason why sociologists consider religion to be an entire agent of socialization: Its effects are very real and influential in our development. It only makes sense that the beliefs you were socialized to hold early on would have some kind of impact on you later on. Fortunately, now that we are more aware of who we are, what we want out of life, and our spirituality, we can finally heal and grow from the ashes of the flames that burned us.

Good luck with exploring and expanding upon your spirituality! After celebrating the Rite of Belial, it only makes sense that we take the time to appreciate new beginnings, initiation, and deeper meanings. It makes even more sense to embrace new beginnings as a new year begins. I hope you get to enjoy this special time of the year as much as I do!

Don’t apologize! It’s not a stupid question at all. Many people are pro-Palestine and recognize that Hamas is a violent extremist group. And while it’s hard to say for sure what exactly they’ve done because the IDF is notorious for making false claims in order to justify the violence they commit, it’s clear that they are not a group that should be in any kind of position of power. The important thing to recognize is that Hamas only exists because of the ongoing occupation of Palestinians. They are not the cause of the problem, merely a symptom of it. They also certainly don’t represent the majority of the Palestinian people’s beliefs, but right now many Palestinians see them as their only option of having any hope of freedom. So, yes, I fully support Palestinian liberation, but I also believe that the people deserve better than Hamas.

As for the “holy ground” argument, I firmly believe that no religion gives anyone the right to steal land from someone else. Colonization is NEVER justified. It is not anti-Semitic to say that; it is basic human decency. If the Israelis truly wish to live on that land, then they need to do so WITH the Palestinian people, not at their expense. There is no justification for Israel’s cruel and dehumanizing treatment of Palestinians. I’m really sorry that people have called you anti-Semitic for supporting Palestine but please don’t take it to heart. Those accusations have absolutely no basis in reality; they are nothing more than deliberate intimidation tactics meant to stop people from speaking out. Zionism is most certainly not the same thing as Judaism, and there are many, MANY Jewish people, including Holocaust survivors, who support Palestine because they recognize that Jewish values teach them to oppose apartheid. It definitely sucks that it’s so hard to find accurate information about Palestine since the mainstream media is so heavily biased towards pro-Israel propaganda, but fortunately, there are some really great videos on YouTube. I highly recommend checking out Hasanabi; I think he’s doing an excellent job covering this issue. You’re not stupid for trying to learn more, so don’t apologize!

first of all,,, im bisexual!! so if anyone has a problem with that, please get off my blog. i will not be tolerating homophobia of any kind.

i really, really didn’t want to have to come out in this way, bc the situation is so bad right now. i really didnt expect enhablr to be facing this kind of a problem.

when i first heard about the issue, i was thoroughly shocked. like completely.

before anything, ill let you all read the definition of homophobia.

now to address the issue at hand. i wasnt directly involved in this problem. some of you may even be wondering why im making a post about it.

but as a part of the lgbtq community, i think id like to speak what i feel about this.

the situation we heard about was that an enhablr writer, had written dni: lgbtq in their account, which literally anyone would be surprised or angry at, especially if you belong to the community.

OP’s friend, who had recently become my mutual, was defending OP’s actions, which made me think of unfollowing them and i wanted to unfriend them. but then i found out it involves religion.

religion is a very sensitive topic for everyone and could go wrong in multiple ways. i respect all religions and beliefs.

so i texted OP’s friend, asking about the situation at hand, in case it was a misunderstanding.

i am aware that the quran forbids acting on gay feelings. it teaches you to not accept the gay ‘Lot’. (i have done my reading on this topic so i rlly hope im not saying anything out of line. if i am, please forgive me.)

but as far as i know, and have heard from my other islamic friends, the quran also tells you to respect and love everyone, no matter what they are or identify as. respect and acceptance are two different things. islam doe not encourage lgbtq, but doesnt tell u to NOT respect people of every kind.

if what they say is correct, then being on tumblr and reading and writing fanfictions is very much considered as haram as well.

in the above conversation, i texted them wanting to hear their side of the story as well. OP’s friend constantly used the word ‘opinion’ along with ‘belief’.

now, opinion and beliefs are two different things. opinion is something that YOU FOLLOW on your own will. belief is something that your religion teaches you to follow, against your will or not. you can notice OP’s friend has used the word opinion quite a lot.

OP’s friend had received an ask and this was their response.

‘everybody has their own opinion.’

again, the word opinion is used here, which conveys to us that they’re not wanting to interact with lgbtq community on their own accord.

i tried to explain that most of us get enough hate for being a part of the lgbtq community, and seeing dni:lgbtq, doesnt make it any better.

now, about OP.

when OP was answering asks, most of their answers were very mixed up,

in the third picture, you’ll see ive highlighted a sentence.

they say THEY DONT LIKE lgbtq. usage of first person is used. “i don’t like what they’re doing” which conveys their opinion on the community.

Hi!! this is a kinda random question, but I was just thinking about it. So we know that the Druskelle (and presumably most of Fjerda) are bigoted, racist, etc.. Does that stem from their culture and like the wars and stuff or is that part of their religion? I guess hypothetically could Matthias/Maya/your other Fjerdan ocs have corrected their prejudices and still believed in Djel or do the two beliefs contradict? Just wondering what your take is :)

Hi, thanks for the ask!

I absolutely adore religion in the Grishaverse and a while ago I wrote quite a long analysis on Matthias and Inej's relationship with their respective religions, mostly focusing on Djel since I feel I know more about Fjerdan religion than Ravkan having read the soc duology a lot more times than the other books, and I talked quite a bit about some of these things so I'll link that here in case anyone is interested and below I'll put a couple of quotes from that more specifically pertaining to what you've said here. Essentially, I believe that the Drüskelle order is a cult and represents a warped version of Fjerdan religion and that Matthias' journey of self-discovery and of learning to find the version of Djel that he believes in and that aligns with who he wants to be is one of the most beautifully written character arcs I have ever read.

Some quotes from my previous analysis:

"Theoretically, the Drüskelle are raised (forced) to believe the same basic principles of the religion that most of the religious people in the country are [...] However, what’s taken completely further is that the Drüskelle are told that the only way to be truly respected by their god is to take decisive action against Grisha people for their power, because it’s “demonic” and a warping of Djel’s gifts. Now first of all, none of the religious teachings we learn about as the reader even remotely suggest this, which suggest that it’s a baseless prejudice for which religion has been used as an excuse for so long that it’s become culturally ingrained and believed."

"Matthias even shows particular pride that he was personally told the secret of the second glass bridge by Jarl Brum himself"

"And this is the thing, ok, because by claiming that Djel will show the boys the path and then telling them himself (!!!!!!!!) Brum is claiming far more power than a servant of Djel and or Fjerda. No, now he turns himself into a messenger of Djel, a prophet if you will, just to reaaaalllly double down on that religious trauma he’s giving these kids. He is putting himself into the Messiah-like position; he’s saying that Djel sent him to them to tell them that they must kidnap and kill people to earn his love."

I'm gonna talk a bit about Djel and relationship with religion in terms of my Fjerdan OCs here, if anyone is interested but hasn't read the fic you don't have to have done to follow the religion info but it's worth knowing that it's set almost entirely in Ketterdam and takes place nearly 10 years after Crooked Kingdom :)

For my Fjerdan OCs religion is very much on my mind whenever I'm writing them, and I find it a very interesting thing to consider. So, I have three Fjerdan OCs in Daughter of the Rain and Snow: Maya, a Tidemaker and our titular character, Celina, a deceased (pre-events of the fic) otkazat'sya whose body was burned and who therefore cannot reach Djel, and Fiona, a Heartrender who lost her relationship with religion a long time ago and has no interest in taking it up again. I'm going to start with Fiona because I haven't really explored her relationship with Djel very much since she has had less scenes than the others thus far, but I tend to have quite fleshed out backstories for my side characters even if they don't make it into the story lol

Fiona is 22 during the events of the fic and has been working with Inej and the crew of the Wraith for almost four years. She made her way to Ketterdam at 17 after her family discovered she was Grisha and threw her out. In a desperate attempt to flee Fjerda - and notably not knowing any Kerch language - she signed an indenture contract with a Kerch merchant who offered her safe passage to the country. She did not know what she was signing, and her contract was written in Kerch, but she just wanted to get out of Fjerda as quickly as possible and this seemed like her only option. She was freed and ended up working with Inej when she was 18. Fiona had battled with her relationship with Djel for a long time after discovering she was Grisha and keeping it secret, but when her parents learnt the truth and started abusing her and eventually turned her out with nowhere to go and no protection to be found she adopted atheism completely, akin to the way Kaz and Wylan found their atheism. -

“Saints speed,” she said to Inej, who echoed the words she knew were said for her benefit alone.

Fiona had given up on Djel, the god she was raised with, and had no interest in taking up another. (Chapter 8) (I feel so weird quoting my own writing)

Religion is very much at the forefront of everything I write considering Maya and Celina, particularly since Celina only appears as a character in Maya's POV chapters (she exists more as a concept to Kaz, Inej, and Aimee, who connect her to things she represents to each of them but whom they never knew as a real person). Maya battling her relationship with Djel is very much in the forefront of the story and one of my favourite chapters is when she goes back to the tree she cut down in anger and prays for it; the chapter is essentially a long monologue of Maya talking to Djel and voicing every side of her argument out loud. I won't list everything here but I'll add this quote from the chapter:

“I’ve tried it every way,” she whispered, failing to fight the sobs that were growing in her throat, “I ignored it, I tried not to use it, I used it for others, I used it for myself, I used it for You. And I have somehow failed You every time. Maybe I deserve to burn now, but they say you are born Grisha. Did You really look at me and always know I would deserve to burn? From the very moment I was born? Perhaps this is all I am in Your grand tapestry of destiny; a game for You to play, a doll that You can take apart and stitch together at wrong angles. I am a broken toy that can be discarded and burnt whilst the world moves on as though I were never here. I made the wrong choices, but I thought they were the only ones left. You could have let me stay at home. You could have let her live - let both of them live. And I never would have done anything like this. I’m so sorry…” her voice broke and she felt the tears flooding over her cheeks as she collapsed over the ruined tree trunk and cried into its empty flesh, “I’m so sorry,” (Chapter 66 on tumblr, chapter 67 on AO3)

And the chapter ultimately ends with Maya asking Djel to teach her how to deserve forgiveness from Inej and the other characters for everything she'd done, or to at least teach her how to forgive Him.

I think one of the most important aspects of religion in terms of this and in terms of Maya and Celina's relationship with each other is that even though Celina knows Maya is a Tidemaker neither of them ever talk about it and Maya reached a point where she was actively afraid to bring it up because she didn't know how Celina felt about Grisha and she didn't want to jeopardise not only what is the only relationship she has with anyone right now but arguably what is the first relationship she's ever had that wouldn't be considered abusive (her relationship with her father is kinda up in the air, I know, but considering that he sold her I don't think it's a spoiler to say I hate that man's guts even though y'all have a little bit more to learn about him yet) since realistically Celina was the only person she had a real conversation with for three years and the only other people she spoke to in that time would be clients, Yennefer, and occasionally other girls at the Tulip Mill. Maya even saw Yennefer's death more as vengeance for Celina than she did for herself, saying that Yen's death was for Celina and Kaz's death would be for her before she finds out that Kaz was partially responsible for Celina's death in the worldview that she holds - and as Kaz considers himself no less responsible for her death than Rollins was for Jordie's. I don't know if I'm explaining it quite right but the fear that Maya developed surrounding other people's perspective on Grisha power preventing her from being able to share her feelings with Celina I found a really heart-wrenching detail to write and I was definitely hoping to present the idea that even if religiously the ideas don't contradict - considering that we see Celina adapt her belief in Djel to say that anything that she does at the Tulip Mill will be forgiven because she has no choice over it - culturally speaking it's still such a complex and difficult thing to move past that Maya isn't even sure she can ever express it to the only person she trusts, and I also hoped to touch on this idea with the flashbacks to the Ravkan boy at the Grisha workshop with Maya who didn't trust her because she was Fjerdan even though she was Grisha and had literally fled Drüskelle and her home country

Anyway I hope this made sense, it's starting to feel very rambly and random, and I hope that it was interesting to read. Thanks so much for teh ask and for your interest in the fic! <33

I wish a lot more people ACTUALLY READ ABOUT RELIGIONS, their different teachings and ideas before opening their damn mouth.

Notice how i said religion? And not people. Ya condemn people, but if you condemn people only of one side and not of your own, who are spreading hate, then you're no better than the other side you claim to oppose. ( applies to both/ all sides) .

When it comes to religion, instead of wasting time on the internet arguing with faceless people, please read different aspects to all religions? Even the ones differing from your political views??

Because when you start to do that, you recognize that religions aren't good or bad in themselves, its what people interpret and practice it to be. Just because its your set of people ( some people not all) spreading hate, doesn't mean you stand complacent because you're getting protected. Stand against the hate mongers and take pride in your culture.

Taking pride in your religion / culture and calling out the ones spreading hate IS NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE. IT SHOULD NOT BE. it just creates more polarization than what already exists. Painting everyone in the same brush serves no one.

And for heaven's sake read actual books and look at different perspectives while reading about history, religion, politics etc because the internet is an echo chamber which directs you to sources based on your clicks. The internet, while has been instrumental in making people appreciate their culture, IT IS NOT A PLACE TO LEARN ABOUT SUCH THINGS. IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS AND POLARIZING PLACE.

Differences in opinions always exist, because opinions come from interpretation of what is there. Criticism is valid, but blind hate disguised as criticism is not. You can have your opinions, but at least look at differing sides??

I'll always say this, if the love for your religion comes from a place of the hate of others, it's not love, it's bigotry. If everyone says " we won't compromise we won't do this", it just destroys our society and it's already happening. I sometimes feel like banging my head against against wall is better than seeing our society tread down this path of dangerous reactionary politics.

Which is why I've taken recourse to spirituality because its the only thing that I feel is worth pursuing. I cant change the world but at least I can change myself.

I watch from here every Sunday as she sits pretty with the choir board. She is a beautiful girl, a beautiful singer. I envision myself in her place, feeling accepted like she does. I keep my head bowed, trying not to think selfishly when I pray. My eyes are closed so tightly that I see static. My pleas to the Lord have gone ignored for as long as I can remember. However, my sister says I am blessed in ways I can’t yet understand. She’s always saying just the right thing, doing just the right thing. She carries her Bible with her almost everywhere; though it’s pristine, you can tell she’s had it for years. Each page is filled with color-coded sticky notes. She tries to teach me, but it never works. Her interpretations of the word feel like gilded lies. I open my eyes to the wooden details, the tall ceilings with ornate decals. My eyes are pulled to that colorful stained-glass display of Jesus with his wounded head resting on his shoulder. The magnificence of this building can’t be denied, nor can the faith that carried so many to build this church. I yearn for that faith. Yearn for a sign that my sister and everyone else are right. That there is more to these teachings than violence and pain.

Though I feel no comfort during service, the empty church has always brought me solace. Its beauty makes me want to believe. All the people who would soon fill this building are consumed by the word of God, so engrossed in only his gospel that it affects their every action, thought, and manner. I wish to relinquish myself to him in that way. I consider how hard it is for my family to have me, the doubting sinner, always going against the grain whenever the chance presents itself. I won’t say I make it easy for them. A primary tenet of Christianity is to follow the flock. Denying it is to exile yourself. I stand up and walk to the podium, imagining myself as our priest. Celibate and forever chained to the Lord. He seems happy, up here preaching to us all. He shakes everyone’s hands at the end of service and smiles big, toothy smiles that make me wince. I put myself in his shoes to be a leader and a voice for the Lord. To have Him speak to you constantly, sometimes I believe I hear Him. I tell my sister what I hear; she gives me a look she always has to reset, a look of disgust and fear before she tells me to ask for clarity.

Standing on the stage, looking down at the empty pews, fills me with a swirling sense of power and pride. The seat I previously occupied quickly blends with the rows and rows before me. There is a mightiness in this position, a feeling I wish to memorialize for all the coming disciples. I have felt connected to some stories from the Bible. The ones centered around power and anger and greed and lust showed me in his image. All the sins that boil inside me like a teapot ready to shatter. I've related to Cain and Judas, and the betrayals they’ve taken have rebuilt the congregation tenfold. Making each believer stronger and more resilient in their belief. I feel myself begin to shake from the thought of my next actions. Eyeing the gas canister I left by my seat, I pull a lighter from my pocket. This glorious building made to house devotion and love will soon catch my flame and incinerate me with its artful architecture. This is what the Lord has asked of me. A sacrifice. Hellfire in His sanctuary for all eyes to gaze upon. Gasoline invades my nostrils, and I accept it graciously. Deeply inhaling my actions while I listen to the spillage. Our message will be that much more powerful when my charred body is found melded in the evidence of undying faith.

He's from a nomadic culture so he's spent most of his life on the road, only recently deciding to settle down in Odeda. Because he's traveled a lot, he knows several languages and a lot about many different cultures, including the damages caused by Odeda when they colonized them.

Jasmin

Half Odedan and half former colony. She grew up in Odeda but was taught of her father's home country and can speak the language. She excelled in school from a young age and was accepted in a prestigious college. Has taught in private schools for most of her career, jumping at the change to teach the young prince and princesses.

Nadine

An immigrant who studied the dragons of the north western islands and the people living there in her early adulthood. After writing a well received paper on them, she moved to Odeda to continue her study on lizards and lizard-like animals. She worked at a college and received funding from them for her research prior to becoming a tutor for the royal family.

Lysander

Well respected artist in Odeda who painted several public buildings. Caught the eye of the royal family and was offered a position as a tutor. He's not an immigrant or mixed race, but has spoken a lot with immigrants and their beliefs have rubbed off on him.

Story

Felipe was the first to suggest teaching the prince and princesses about foreign cultures and politics. Nadine and Lysander jumped at the change to teach someone of such high status their beliefs and opinions, but Jasmin was more hesitant. She didn't want to jeopardize this amazing job opportunity but agreed to say nothing when the others went ahead with it.

After some years, Maurice started talking about "foreigner political ideas". Priscilla didn't say anything because she wasn't really against suggesting new ideas, but when she passed away Volker soon had the teachers fired for spreading their "harmful" ideas. They all died under mysterious circumstances over the next few years and were replaced by teachers handpicked by Volker. Jasmin was spared because she only taught math.

This caused a rift in Maurice's and Volker's relationship, but Maurice was old enough to understand that he shouldn't speak against Volker.

Oohhhh, hmm hmm!

So is the timeline thus?

Priscilla is the empress. Maurice gets his education.

Teachers were sought after to teach Maurice.

Teachers had leeways during Priscilla's rule.

Volker is ready to snatch that throne. Murders Priscilla and her husband (L-Lucario? Wait that can't be right).

Volker jails teachers and subsequently assassinate/execute them. Maurice is now old enough to know he should shut up to not provoke Volker too much.

Extra questions that pop up in my head!

How old was Maurice when Priscilla died?

What did Maurice learn from his teachers right before his teachers' deaths?

Is he old enough to really understand the thoughts and opinions of his teachers, or is he really just being a willing recipient? Is he being indoctrinated—even if it's "good" indoctrination? When he talks about his opinions back then, is he really just parroting what his teachers think?

What I like about this angle ^ is that you can then explore a bit about the role and philosophy of education.

Even if you're teaching good things, isn't it still indoctrination if you're trying to make a kid see things in your specific, opinionated way? Kids do take after the thoughts of the adults/society around them for a long time because... that's kinda what children (and even some adults) do. Social creatures and all. Usually we argue that it's not a problem if the worldview we are trying to impart on a kid is a beneficent one (like how some would argue that it's fine to teach children religion at a young age, because religion advocates for goodness), but it doesn't actually answer the question about the nature of education itself.

What form of education is not indoctrination?

And, given that we deliver knowledge through specific narratives (for example, the narrative of evolution; the narrative of string theory; the narrative of physicalism in neuroscience etc.), then education itself is basically a mass narrative-spreading system. Hence Volker's use of propaganda and indoctrination in Odedan universal education syllabus... and ironically, Maurice's private education via his tutors. The machinery is the same: shape the child(ren) into a specific way. The difference is: "what specific way?"

I think these two examples of education (Volker-led education vs. Maurice's private education) could make for a very good contrast! It could also eventually lead to the "education status quo" stance espoused by Ira vs. "education reform" advocacy espoused by Edith.

Apropos to this "education and tutor" lore,

Has Edith considered the logistics of training teachers under the new, reformed syllabus + system while she advocated for her reform?

What I mean is this: no matter how great your education ideal is, you need qualified people to carry them out, yea? I know this all too well because Malaysian Education Department loves revamping our education policies in quick successions (it's beyond rewriting/updating textbooks) that neither the teachers nor the students ever reaped whatever "benefits" these dumbasses tout. Hence, you need to train the educators before the students get to enjoy this reform. But how long will you allocate that time of training? How much resources? What new qualifications will you be seeking in your new teachers?

And the more sweeping your reform (I assume Edith's idea is very sweeping and revolutionary!), the thornier the logistics!

I think this could become one of Ira's arguments! I basically imagine Ira's reform is just textbook rewrites and stripping away "overt" monarchist overtone at most. There is very little re-training of educators under this sort of change.

Edith's though would need a lot more work. Resources. Time.

So after we talked about Volker needing a Benedict (but before she ended up being Lyndis 😏), I was wondering what sort of person would become Volker's advisor. Why would someone stand behind a shithead like that? Why offer their intellect to someone like that?

Love for the royal family?

Love for the ideal of the country/love for Odeda?

Love for a specific political ideal?

Love for Volker? (this is probably the most cliche reason, haha!)

Love for power and further ambitions?

Love for social experiments? (This one seems kinda chaotic. It's basically a Mad Scientist in a position of power.)

Or no love—pragmatic alliance because of how much this person's fortunes is tied to Volker?

I thought the last possibility is pretty intriguing to imagine, so I tried to come up with plausible backstory for this. And since we were also talking about Maurice's backstory including his tutor way back at Monday...

The scenario was this: Lyndis (in my head at the time the name was "Blanknedict" 😂) joined the royal family first as a governess/tutor. She was to teach either Maurice or his siblings (you filled in the blank for me in this ask, hehe! So it's "Maurice's sisters.") on magic??? Or science ???

But Lyndis wasn't being a teacher for teaching's sake, per se. Before becoming a governess/tutor, she had been engaging in Machiavellian proclivities back in her town. They range from good things all the way to assholery. Maybe it was to manipulate the town folk to treat a solitary old woman more nicely just because the granny was nice to her that one time. Maybe it was to screw with the local pastor because he criticized her harshly that one time. Or to cause an expulsion of a neighbor because she hated how inefficient they were at providing the village some produce. Maybe it was to cause another person to lose their livelihood because this person offended Lyn before.

The corrupt town mayor had a habit of employing urchins to do some of his petty crimes, which he then "solved," to bolster his reputation among them townfolks. Lyndis was one of his employees, which gave her the first environment to exercise her schemes and be praised + rewarded for it.

The idea isn't that she's a manipulative monster from the get-go. It's that she lacked people who could help her channel these gifts for good. And the environment she was raised in had limited her into becoming something better.

Anyway, as she grew up, the sort of things she found objectionable became less and less. She found people too easy to fool and manipulate—at this point, the mayor had become so reliant on her, she was the real mayor this whole time—that she became deeply suspicious of collective intellect. This, I thought, would explain why she was against the sort of ideals Brandi and the rest advocated, for democracy rests on one's faith in the people's collective ability to rule.

She was really a shadow dictator, and under her rule, the town did prosper. This, I thought, would help her develop this idea that the best way of governance is one very wise, very powerful person ruling them all.

Her ambitions grew. Seeing the failures of Odeda (the same ones that tormented Volker, for that matter) pissed her off, and soon she decided to aim for the royal court where she believed her talent could be exercised. She would remake Odeda in her vision from the shadow. To do that, she decided to join in through the cover of an employment. She chose teaching, but originally, she wasn't even the governess going for the royal family's interview. She killed the real one, assumed her identity, and steadily sabotaged other people's chances so she could get there.

Then once she became a tutor, she began to look for the medium she could latch on—the same way the old mayor was her medium for power. She found Volker's ideals and character to be the best for her after they met each other in some... event, whatever. I don't know what aristocrats and royals do. She bribed servants and children into becoming her spies, collect secrets to blackmail those she could not bribe, and basically tried to construct her own spy network. She even dabbled in some murder if she needed to advance her schemes.

On the outside, though, she played the role of an affable, intelligence, reasonable woman who was simply a bit pragmatic in her decisions. Cosmetics may be most people's way of dressing up, but Lyndis' cosmetics are her reputation and impression.

Volker got wind of it all, though! He had evidence of her schemes and shits—which could get her executed. Lyndis, not content to die before her ambitions came to fruition + not disliking Volker's own appetite for power, agreed to formally work for him. From then on, she amassed even more power and control over the country through her alliance with Volker, and she provided counsel and schemes for him. It was a win-win partnership of equal footing, and they looked out for each other. Lyndis supported Volker's megalomaniacal quest to become god because she found immortality a useful asset. But she was smart enough not to be the guinea pig of her own experiment, and so Volker was her "test trial." Ultimately, she wanted an eternal dictator of whom she could support from the shadow.

I thought it was pretty interesting a dynamic, so here you go! Something my daydream made up because Dear Emperor is just that fun.

hey lotus i have a few questions,

is neville christian? i always see him use the bible versus to explain the law of assumption, so is the law anyway related to Christianity?

and, is it okay if i don't believe in god? idk why but society always pressures us to believe in god and if we don't we are against him or smth. it makes me feel uncomfortable and guilty for not believing in god. like we don't know if he exists or not. some people say he's real others don't, his entire existence is based off on our own beliefs. my parents are heavy into religion and force me to believe in him. and my mother sometimes even uses him against me, "oh god will punish you for this" whenever i make a mistake. it really makes me uncomfortable. and i seriously do not like the idea of praying to some external deity for my desires. eg. "God please help me with this". i don't mean to offend any religion, but personally it doesn't make me feel any better to pray, as prayers aren't always answered. or the idea of "divine timing" that honestly seems like bullshit to me and reminds of the law of attraction phase i went through.

to me sometimes religion feels too restricting, like there are too many rules and superstitions and i feel pressured by it. my mom even sometimes uses it to predict my future or even uses terms like "negative energy" and "bad energy". that just frustrates me even more.

i have absolutely nothing against those who believe in religion. if you believe in it, go ahead by all means. i also do apologise if i have offended anyone with this ask. this ask is just my personal opinion on religion. if you are religious, i respect you. but please do not force your religion onto others.

Well, yes.. It is okay if you don't believe. Neville believed that God was our own consciousness, our Imagination. I get you, I always felt pressured to believe in my responsible religion too. Check this quote from his Lecture, "Repentance A Gift From God".

"my responsibility – to enact a scene which would imply the fulfillment of my desire, and then surrender completely to my Father (Imagination), for he has the power to externalize it. I do not know how to do it on this level. I haven’t the wisdom, I haven’t anything on this level to do it, so my faith is faith in my Father. I also don't believe in divine timing, I fully believe we are in charge of our own destiny. My mom also did traumatized me a lot with all her catholic beliefs (I described it in this post) - All about going to hell and being punished by God. I know how it feels... My mom always tried to force her beliefs on me and I always felt frustrated by that. I re-discovered my faith in the Law of Assumption. We are God, that's what I believe. "He never demands penance of anyone."

"Now what is sin? Sin means "missing the mark," missing the road, "missing the goal" in life. If you haven't a mark you can't sin. If you have a goal in this world and do not realize it and miss it, then you have sinned. So his purpose is to show man how not to sin in this world. No condemnation. Prayer is our inner acceptance that we have our desire. I don't believe in sin nor in hell - nor did Neville believed in that. Neville says that sin = "miss the mark", so if you have a goal in your life and you don't assume you already have this desire, then you are sinning, for you are not fulfilling this desire, and Neville says that our desires are the promise of God (and God = Our Imagination).

As someone who was raised Christian (Roman Catholic, specifically) the older I get the more I realize how scary and cult-like it truly is!! The guilt that's instilled in you at such a young age is by far the worst, in my opinion. I was talking with my sister the other day and we both came to the conclusion that we're only still going to church on Sunday's (though we're still stuck at home, therefore "forced" to still go to church) is only because we've been literally conditioned to think we will go to actual hell for all eternity if we stop going.

In conclusion, yes I agree with you Christianity is fucked up!!! (And it should not be so normalized to be teaching it to kids as their brains are forming.)

I've heard this a couple of times from ex-believers and imo, I'm inclined to agree with you.

This is why I believe that christianity IS a cult, not just cult like, because the tactics they use are the same ones cults use to keep their new members (the children) under their control.

Any ideology that relies on the teaching that "all" humans are evil internally and that life is just a struggle against our "base carnal desires" in order to achieve eternal happiness ONLY AFTER death is inherently a cult imo. If they instill these teachings in you by beating you (which many christian families defend the use of child abuse), I dont think you really need to go any further than that to get your answer imho.

We can talk ad nauseum about all the thought stopping ways believers teach each other to stop thinking so hard about the words in their holy text. "you're not smarter than god" "you don't know more than god does" "we cant know his plan for us" "you think you're the first person to have these doubts" "doubt is the devil speaking" etc etc etc that are forced down the throats of children so that when their brain matures, they've already been indoctrinated into the cult and will have a hard time self-soothing such doubts and questions.

I am so sorry to hear about the trauma this religion has inflicted on you and your sister and I hope both of you find a way to rid yourself of that unearned fear that was forced onto you. It is really scary to realize that you and most everyone else you know has been indoctrinated into these beliefs (especially when your family uses such beliefs to defend objectively horrible shit like homophobia and sexism for example) and I wish I had a way to help everyone who is struggling with that knowledge come to peace with it.

Some of my friends say that they struggled for so long to deconvert publically because they wanted their loved ones to realize they've been conned along with them and it pains them to know that much of their family believes in literal lies because of eternal torment or whatever. Another reason why I think its actually a cult because members feeling guilty about leaving the cult since "all their family believes in it" and "what if they're right" just screams cult traums to me tbh.

I agree with you that christianity (and other religions too) should not be taught to children at all. The damage this type of thinking does to children is so fucking despicable to me. I wish I had a better answer on how to stop children from being indoctrinated into such a cult but unfortunately, I don't (at least not one that doesn't trample the rights of other people). All we can continue to do is to critique ideologies whenever we can and point out the factual errors within the religion itself. The rest is up to the individual believer if they want to really analyze why their religion is so incorrect about literally everything.

I spoke with my partner throughly about the process of outgrowing the fear of God and certain principles and schools of thought that we are unfortunately subjected to as we grow and evolve within our world and within our communities and societies. Because religion as it is is such a man made idea already and the process of enforcing it falls into the hands of human beings who have the capacity and ability to weaponize anything against anyone we often fall victim to that behavior and have individuals apart of our communities, our societies, and our families even push us further away from god and our spiritual practices and path by using fear mongering, hatred, violence and manipulation. AND all of these things are taught! I’ve said frequently that one’s relationship with God and spirit is his or her own. But it becomes incredibly difficult to maintain one when we as people choose to harass and mistreat one another in such a way that creates division and convinces one to leave any sort of faith or spiritual connection behind.

We argue about who and what God is, when God can present differently to anyone.

We argue about what God would’ve wanted or what is acceptable and righteous in the eyes of God and a lifetime lived with him,her, or them.

We argue about in which ways we should be allowed to be with god, communicate with god, show our love to god, etc.

When none of those things and anything connected to is any of our business and it is not our place to decide for others what they should do or in what direction they should go, nor is it our place to correct them or try to push them in the direction who believe is correct or best for them (despite what is popular in some schools of thought and teachings.)

I have been attacked, ostracized, made out to be evil, called names, mistreated, provoked, invalidated constantly about my practice, the way I choose to live my life, my beliefs, my healing journey and process, etc. by those who choose to consider themselves to be righteous individuals or children of God. And none of those people who did those things will be rewarded for their acts in the end, when they go to meet God as they say they will, because their actions do not reflect what they say that they believe.

That is what pushes people away, the hypocrisy, the ignorance, the violence and mistreatment of people whom god created in his image just as you feel you are. That is why I say live and honest life and be honest with others, that is why I say do unto others what you want done onto you!!
