"you really think i would make friends with a mudblood?" he sneered, upper lip curling up in disgust as you shrank backwards, his friends smirking at your heartbroken expression.
"i-"
"filthy mudblood."
two words snarled at you. two words that broke your fragile glass heart as you crumpled, leaving you heartbroken and hurt. two words that completely destroyed whatever friendship the two of you had managed to build up, leaving only ruin in it's wake.

thinking about emotionally constipated regulus finally giving in to his feelings after overcoming so much yearning! pining! but also guilt of his involvement in the war/knowledge that he likely won't make it out
but that aside, thinking about him giving in to his feelings and trying to find the best way to demonstrate his affection to his crush but he has no healthy template or model of showing love. walburga and orion were not the paragons of romance so when regulus finally doubles down on his feelings he doesn't know what to do. but regulus, like sirius, is the same sort of brave that doesn't sit around and wait
so he begins courting her with the only shows of affections that he's really seen, i.e., literal pureblood courting traditions of lavish gift giving. it's painfully clumsy in the beginning — he doesn't know all of her preferences, but he knows she likes fruits, so he all but buys out any fruit-adjacent sweets at honeydukes. when it comes to giving it to her for the first time, he can't quite decide where to look when he rather unceremoniously plops it into her lap, but soon enough he can't quite keep his eyes off of her to study her reactions to the candies. he starts to think he's made a terrible mistake but then she smiles and it feels like he's been cracked open raw and he feels a little dizzy and from there on he turns into a crow of purchasing things that he thinks might bring that smile back.
across the months, from candies, it turns to fancy quills and ink pots (after she makes an offhanded remark about her quill being patchy), and once he realizes that a witch can really only have a few quills and ink pots, he turns to books, even considering asking remus for recommendations on muggle books (he doesn't though, because he's much too proud, but remus notices that sirius's little brother has been hovering around him recently).
soon it escalates to ridiculously fine clothes (though he'll never admit it, it is entirely intentional that the color of the silk dresses match with his handkerchiefs), and when he finally turns to jewelry, she stops him with a baffled question.
because with every item he's given to her, he's always just shrugged his shoulders jerkily and alternated between looking at the gift, her face, and the nearest window. he's always shortly said something along the lines of, "your old quill didn't even resemble a feather anymore," or "your clothes are drab," because even though he's made progress, regulus black is still too emotionally constipated to tell her he loves her, but he hopes that she knows (she does).

god I just love the idea of power couple Lucius and Narcissa. Bc there’s no WAY they werent the it couple when they were in school. Give me House of Black and House Malfoy alliance and brilliant slytherin students just quietly being the example of traditional pureblood culture. No need to make it political yet, but just a historical couple with a different air about them.
I’m talking the clothes with hints to their ancestry, bobbins and trinkets centuries old, family jewelry, lavish courting gifts, the most intricate etiquette, loving looks across the hallways, whispered adorations, interlocked pinkies, love letters, imported snacks being slipped into book bags, pieces of commissioned music, bespoke clothes with no price tag bc if you need to ask, you can’t afford it.
Just let them be young and falling in love with a modest amount of distance and an overwhelming amount of vanity and money. They’re sneaky, with unmatched pedigrees, and they breathe traditions millennia old, their journey from being paired for marriage by their families to falling in love is FASCINATING.
I want to see what unspeakable wealth looks like when it marries other unspeakable wealth and then falls head over heels. Like. The possibilities for romantic gestures are literally endless. What is considered too much? They’re a wonderful way for my brain to explore pureblood high society and a quieter, more subtle sequence of romance.
just imagining their courting period and engagement let alone the event of the decade: that WEDDING. Lord.

The Flints are a sacred 28 family, and the fandom seems to have accepted that they have ministry positions and are rich.
Imagine muggleborn Oliver coming over for a cute “meet the parents” scenario with underlying strain because while Marcus’ parents aren’t death eaters dating non-purebloods is very taboo in high pureblood society. Except they’re about half an hour late because Oliver was frozen in shock for a while when they arrived at Flint Manor because “Merlin, Marc, THIS is your HOUSE?!?! You didn’t tell me you live in a caste!!”
“It’s a manor, Ollie.”
“WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?!?!”

Lucius Malfoy
Tumblr media
Is this Lucius Malfoy? It is Lucius Malfoy!
(at least in my imagination)
I've found the original illustration on tumblr but immediately thought that this looks like Lucius Malfoy. The pose, cold eyes, and smart attire gives off such an aristocratic and regal vibe, especially with the pelt around his shoulder. Overall, very sexy.

Throughout the series, the Malfoys make derogatory comments about the number of children the Weasleys have.
But the Weasleys are purebloods, and the Malfoys are pureblood supremists. If anything, you'd think that the Malfoys would like it that the Weasleys have a lot of children, the more purebloods the better.
Except that they're the "wrong kind" of purebloods, aren't they?
They're not rich. They don't have important connections. Mr. Weasley works in the Ministry, but his position isn't one with importance or prestige. They don't think that they're automatically superior just because they're purebloods. They're perfectly fine with members of their family marrying Muggle-borns or half-bloods. They think Muggle-borns or half-bloods are totally equal members of magical society. Mr. Weasley loves Muggles.
So of course the Malfoys, and quite a few other pureblood families, ridicule the Weasleys for their children. Why would they want more purebloods like those?

Pureblood Purists Actually Have Valid Concerns
Disclaimers
Before I start my post let me make 2 disclaimers since some people have a tendency to twist words on Tumblr:
Not all blood purists were death eaters. I am not condoning DE terrorism here. I am referring to people who held pureblood beliefs but never fought in a war to oppress people.
Harry Potter is a fictional world. My arguments are not meant to be extended to the real world.
Assumption about Magic
JKR does not specify the origin of magic. Is it like ATLA where it's a spiritual kind of thing and people are blessed by Lady Magic? Or is it a gene thing and wizards are a subspecies of human? For me, I am going to go with magic being a gene thing. If magic was like bending in ATLA then wizards should not be such a tiny minority.
Missed Potential of Umbridge Interrogation Scene
This post was inspired by Book 7, Chapter 13 – The Muggle-born Registration Commission. Specifically, the part where Umbridge is interrogating this poor muggle-borne woman named Mrs Cattermole.
‘Could you please tell us from which witch or wizard you took that wand?’
Umbridge's line of questioning is so ridiculous and JKR missed a golden opportunity to introduce some nuance here. She paints all purebloods who are not blood traitors as evil/bigoted. Just because this is a kid's book it does not mean she has to treat kids like idiots. Instead of painting purebloods as bigoted fools who believe magic can be stolen or sadists making up crack in this sham kangaroo court, she could have used this dialogue to present valid and ignored concerns of purebloods. Instead of crap like this, the Voldemort regime could be jailing purebloods who married muggles or mugglebornes on the count of them diluting their race. Or maybe firing half-bloods and mugglebornes and giving those jobs to purebloods. These actions are still wrong but at least they would be rational and add some depth. And purebloods have serious cause for concern. Let me point out 5.
Concern 1 - Existence of Squibs
In the books, we don't know the blood status of the parents of prominent squibs like Filch. But I bet the likelihood of your kid being a squib increases dramatically if one of the parents is muggleborne.
It makes sense to me that mugglebornes could be descendants of squibs. Making mugglebornes basically muggles who won the genetic lottery. In book 2 I think, Arthur claimed Granger was a historical wizard figure and asked Hermione if she bore a relation to him. She denies this but what if someone in the Granger family was a squib in the past and years later she got lucky?? So basically if you mate with a muggleborne, you are basically reproducing with a muggle. Which in turn increases the chances of a squib kid. Squibs can't function in the magic world properly.
Concern 2 - Wizards are a minority
Wizards are a minority in a muggle majority. It's a fact that minorities are wiped out when they reproduce with the majority.
Hagrid says this in book 2:
“Dirty blood, see. Common blood. It’s mad. Most wizards these days are half-blood anyway. If we hadn’t married Muggles we’d’ve died out.”
If Hagrid is right and most wizards are half-blood, how is this a good thing? Given enough time, if wizards keep diluting their race like this by reproducing with muggles, the wizard minority will slowly be erased which leads to...
Concern 3 - Cultural Erasure
It's more than just blood dilution but loss of tradition. Even if a muggleborne like Hermione integrates into the wizarding world, she will never truly grasp certain customs and traditions that pureblood families like the Weasleys and Malfoys will. For example, I came to the US for college. Even though I have been here for half a decade now, I will never understand what it is like to grow up as a kid in the US. I don't appreciate US holidays like Thanksgiving and Memorial Day. My kid likely will but they will have to learn those customs from an external source or maybe my future husband's family. Someone like Hermione may even see some pureblood/wizarding traditions as archaic and unnecessary. Over time, wizards will lose their culture and practically become muggles with magic. Which is why Hermione being minister of magic sometimes leaves a sour taste in my mouth. There's a reason why only born citizens can become president/prime minister for countries like the US (I would like to believe there is a reason anyway).
Concern 4 - Reproductive Issues?
Also, why did wizards need muggles to survive in the first place? Were the women/men having fertility issues? Was the wizarding population so minuscule that they were inbreeding? Or were they simply just horny for muggles? If small native/African tribes are/were able to survive without reproducing with white invaders or other outsiders why is it different for wizards??
Concern 5 - Lack of New Blood
Still focusing on Hagrid's quote. Let's say every pureblood family started with a muggleborne wizard/witch. Therefore given enough generations, Granger could theoretically become a pureblood name like Malfoy or Weasley. But there's a problem: there aren't enough mugglebornes!
Read Hagrid's quote carefully. He said wizards would have died out if they did not intermarry with muggles. Not that wizards would have died out without mugglebornes adding to the population!
This further adds to my blood dilution argument. Basically, we have a fixed magical gene pool which is being stretched every generation with more and more half-bloods being popped out.
Conclusion
Pureblood purists have rational reasons to favour blood purity and to be frustrated with "blood traitors". As more pureblood families like the Weasleys intermarry with muggles/mugglebornes, there is an ever-smaller marriage pool for purebloods. Throw in cultural dilution too.
If JKR wanted to add depth to the muggleborne discrimination, she should have shown how mugglebornes are critical to the survival of wizarding kind and how much purebloods actually need them. Maybe show them using their muggle knowledge to improve wizarding society while she's at it too? But it's like muggebornes like Lily and Hermione have amnesia and forget all about their muggle background! At least make wizards reap the benefit of magic and technology to balance out the issues of reproducing with mugglebornes and muggles.
I just wish JKR could have given purebloods more of a voice. Not all purebloods are crazy, bloodthirsty DEs or Dumbledore bootlickers. And oftentimes, there are reasons behind discrimination that should be examined and explored, instead of just demonized. Harry Potter is seven books worth of wasted potential. I don't know how anyone can say JKR was excellent at world building when the wizarding world feels so tiny and incomplete.

Wizarding Blood-Purity is a Sham
I think that a lot of people forget that Salazar Slytherin wasn't racist.
And no, before you go all crazy on me just remember in the second book, when fear and anger and all kinds of emotions were running wild and everyone distrusted Slytherin House, students asked a teacher about what happened. And that teacher, a ghost who for all we know could have been there when it actually happened, gave an honest answer.
"Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students admitted to Hogwarts. He believed that magical learning should be kept within all-magic families. He disliked taking students of Muggle parentage, believing them to be untrustworthy."
Look at the language. Look at it, and understand that Salazar didn't see Muggle-borns as inferior, as worse. He saw them as untrustworthy.
Why, you ask? Well Professor Binns answers that as well!
"[The founders] built this castle together, far from prying Muggle eyes, for it was an age when magic was feared by common people, and witches and wizard suffered much persecution."
Salazar didn't like Muggles because they were hunting his family, his people, and persecuting them with horrific violence. He didn't trust Muggle-borns because how could he know that they wouldn't betray the magical world and tell their families that the kid two villages over practices magic with him on Tuesdays?
And yes, witches and wizards had ways to make it look like they burned at the stake when they actually survived, such as the Flame-Freezing Charm. But young children, with little control over their magic? If they were caught or exposed, well, it probably wouldn't end well for them.
Plus, wizardkind is outnumbered by Muggles, by a huge amount. If a village of Muggles who hated and feared magic discovered that a family of wizards and witches was among them, the parents would be burdened with trying to flee from a few hundred people while protecting their kids (who can't control their magic).
Salazar Slytherin didn't like Muggles or Muggle-borns. He hated them and feared them, not because they were inferior, but because they were dangerous. And while murdering children with a giant snake is not a good way to solve this danger to his family, people, and culture, it HAS to be seen that his actions were born not from arrogance, but from fear.
And there were Slytherins who knew this, long before Muggles had become so othered from wizarding society that some families started to believe that Muggles were inferior to those with "pure blood." Like Merlin, Prince of Enchanters, arguably the greatest wizard of all time, who founded the Order of Merlin to protect and aid Muggles, whose name has become synonymous with Muggle rights activisim. Merlin, a Slytherin.
If Salazar Slytherin was alive in the 20th century, he would laugh at the idea that Muggles were inferior. He would be the first to point out that Lily Evans and Hermione Granger, the brightest witches of their age, were Muggle-born. He would scorn the idea that pure-bloods were better, saying if that's true, why is Draco Malfoy, a pure-blood, second to a Muggle-born?
Salazar had questionable morals, to be sure (anyone who doesn't think so can re-read the Chamber of Secrets, where he hid a giant snake in a school full of children to murder the ones he deemed dangerous). But he never, never once thought that Muggles were inferior to wizards.

↳ summary: regulus's lover learns that he's starved for touch and attention, despite still believing in pureblood courting proprieties ↳ content: fluff, slice of life ↳ context: regulus black x thief!oc oneshot based off my horcrux heist fic, take what you can carry, on ao3
Regulus is a strange case of touch starvation.
Since they've kissed that night, it seems as though some barrier of self-restraint has been broken, because she finds that some part of him is always touching her now. Which is an entirely new surprise to her, given his earlier convictions about Pureblood proprieties. But she doesn't find that she minds very much.
Typically, it’s his hands reaching to tug at her fingers or the sleeves of her robes in a strangely endearing manner, or it’s fingers irritatingly looping through her hair. When he sits next to her, his thigh is flushed against hers, or his arm finds a way to coil around her waist. When the others are around, Regulus stands just close enough to her to brush his hand against hers inconspicuously. Needless to say, each touch sends her heart stuttering dangerously.
She’s in the kitchen frowning down at Jame’s mother’s recipe book when she can sense that he’s entered the space. Her suspicion is almost immediately confirmed because she can feel his arm wrap around her midsection as he pulls her into him. “I’m trying to focus,” Kai shoos him distractedly, squinting at the page. English food sure seemed bland.
“I’m not even saying anything,” Regulus points out simply, resting his chin against the junction of her neck as his fingers play with the fabric of her shirt distractingly as they skim against the skin above the waistband of her jeans.
Kai swats at his hands absentmindedly. When he makes a sound of dissatisfaction, she relents and turns her attention back to the recipe book. She only gets through reading the next step when she can feel him nosing gently at the nape of her neck.
“You smell good, love,” he mumbles against her hair, his warm breath against the shell of her ear sending shivers down her spine.
“Regulus,” Kai says firmly, trying to wriggle out of his grasp. Despite herself, she can feel her ears flushing at his fond endearment. The thought that he had come to seek her out sends a dangerous thrill through her chest. “I told James and Lily we’d bring this later but we haven’t even started—”
“It can wait,” he says dismissively as he starts pressing light nuzzling kisses against her collarbone.
“If you’re not going to help, then get out of the kitchen,” Kai says irritably, whirling around. To her surprise, he lets her and resettles his hands firmly on her hips as he tugs her closer so that her hands are trapped against his chest. He doesn’t even miss a beat to crane his head down to nose against her collarbone again. “Regulus—”
“I’ll help,” he promises earnestly, finally tilting his head back to meet her in the eyes. A coy smile curves across his lips as he gazes down at her with half-lidded eyes. “In exchange for a few kisses.”
Kai takes his face between her hands, cupping his cheeks. Regulus smiles down at her in anticipation, already eagerly leaning closer. When he tries to, she pinches his cheeks. “No,” Kai says, purely out of stubbornness and spite. She takes the new space in between them to push him off and turn back around to the counter.
“Just one,” he grumbles sulkily. Was Regulus Black — haughty heir to the Most Ancient and Noble House of Black — whining? An alarm goes off in her mind.
“Leave,” Kai says shortly, biting back a mischievous smile by busying herself with flipping through the recipe book in exaggerated interest.
As if to confirm her suspicion, behind her, Regulus heaves a mournful sigh, as if a great burden had just been placed on him. “My lovely girlfriend doesn’t want to spend time with me,” he complains woefully.
Oh, this could be fun. “Girlfriend?” Kai echoes, pausing to turn her gaze to him with wide-eyed innocence. The word sends a little thrill through her, but she swallows it back as she tilts her head at him in confusion.
Regulus freezes and makes an odd little noise in the back of his throat, the melodramatic expression on his face faltering. At her bemused expression, he straightens, a stricken look marring his handsome features. “Well— I thought— Aren’t we—” Regulus flounders, the color draining from his cheeks comedically fast.
“Aren’t we what?” Kai asks, furrowing her brows for good measure as she stares at him blankly.
“Aren’t we together?” Regulus asks carefully, all of his attention laser-focused on her cautiously.
“I ‘unno,” Kai says with a little lift of her shoulders. “You never asked me.”
Regulus goes perfectly still, looking as though she had just clubbed him over the head. The mortified expression on his face is making it terribly difficult for her to keep a straight face, so she lets out an amused snort to put him out of his misery. “I’m just jesting,” she grins before turning back to the recipe book. “That’s what you get for trying to get out helping.”
She starts reviewing the recipe again when she notices that Regulus has been quiet for a smidge too long. When she glances at him over her shoulder, she’s caught off guard by the pensive look he’s giving her, his brows furrowed unhappily. “I really was just joking,” Kai says uncertainly after a moment.
“No, you’re perfectly correct,” Regulus says after a beat, straightening. The look of intent resolution in his eyes is making her nervous. “I never asked.”
— — — — —
After this encounter in the kitchen, Regulus’s level of neediness declined to nearly nothing. Kai finds herself surprised by how used to his proximity and touch she had gotten used to because now he seems to flit away like a ghost whenever she tries to get near him.
“Are you upset with me?” Kai demands after the third day of him escaping from her. She had managed to corner him in the kitchen, her arms bracketing around him to prevent him from escaping.
Regulus blinks down at her owlishly. “No? I could never be,” he says easily. Kai nearly loses her resolve at his sweet words. She doesn’t know how he always manages to say these pockets of endearments so easily, but they catch her off guard every time.
“Then why have you been…” Kai flounders for a moment, a steady flush creeping up her cheeks. “Distant,” she finishes lamely.
“Well, we’re not together,” Regulus says almost immediately, his expression not changing in the slightest. In fact, he looks rather distracted as his gaze flickers past her.
Kai gapes at him a little, his words making her stomach churn. Had he really taken what she said to heart? Or had he just decided that she had given him an easy way out? Kai feels awfully foolish now so she steps back, shoving her fingers into the depths of her pockets in what she hopes is a display of casual indifference. Perhaps she had misread their entire dynamic again. It certainly wouldn’t have been the first time. “Oh,” she says, her voice small.
Perhaps Regulus has sensed the painful clench her heart is doing because an alarmed expression flickers across his face as he stares at her in concern. “No, er, whatever you’re thinking, stop thinking it,” he says hurriedly. Kai nods, but she can’t bring herself to meet his eyes. Regulus reaches out and takes her hand cautiously, his long fingers lacing through hers. “It’s just that it’s not proper that I haven’t asked you,” he begins, letting out a soft exhale.
At this, Kai’s head snaps up, her brows furrowed. This is what he was on about? “Proper?” She nearly shouts. She's ready to go on a tirade about the tiredness of all the Pureblood proprieties, but his next words has her exasperation deflating quickly.
Regulus grimaces a little, looking embarrassed. “I never properly asked you if you would accept me,” he says quietly, his thumb rubbing circles on her knuckles. “I want to be as suitable and sincere for you as possible,” he continues, his eyes like pools of deep liquid as he gazes at her earnestly. “Will you wait a little longer?”
Kai is at a loss for words, but she finds herself nodding dumbly as the earnestness of his eyes melts away any resolve she has. At her nod, Regulus breaks out into a breath-taking smile, the whites of his perfect teeth flashing. “Thank you, love,” he murmurs, lifting her hand to press a kiss against her knuckles. "I'll court you properly."
"Court?" Kai blurts, but before she can work herself into a tiff, Regulus hurriedly interjects, though it doesn't help much.
"It's proper—"
