Summary: After a near death battle with John Walker, Y/N decides to take a step back. But the desire to live up to her father’s legacy both weighs her down and purges her forward.
“We have to take her to a hospital.” Sam insisted.
“I know.” Barnes agreed, his hold on you tightening just to ensure you wouldn’t slip.
“What was she thinking?” Sam said worriedly. He couldn’t understand why you would take on John by yourself. He knew you were a smart fighter, skilled and powerful. But John had lost it. He took the serum and was off his rocker seeing Lemar killed.
“She wasn’t.” Barnes said simply. Barnes’ brain was running a million miles an hour. He wondered why you would be so stupid, but he also understood you weren’t one to play it safe. “We need to take care of her first, then we find Walker.”
“God, you’re unbelievable.” Sam scoffed. “How can you still be worried about that?”
“We need to get that shield. You saw what he’s capable of.”
“She needs to be the top priority!”
Without you knowing, or at least assuming you didn’t know, you’d been his priority the whole time.
“I don’t care about the shield right now!”
“You think she’d want to forget about the shield?” Barnes countered, watching his volume as if you were simply asleep in his arms. “That's what got her like this. Because she wanted to take that shield from him. We can’t let this go.”
“Is that what you think is right or is it because you have a crush on her?” Sam challenged.
You stirred in Barnes’ grip, slowly coming back. You felt the cool stream of water still working to heal you, the damp feeling of your suit’s material paired with the wet spot in your hair at the back of your head. You felt the cold vibranium arm under your knees, the warmth of Barnes’ chest against your cheek. Your eyes slowly opened to a completely different part of the city than you remember.
“Put me down.” You said hoarsely, pulling your hand and the water out of your suit and zipping it back up. You rubbed your eyes and the bridge of your nose to quickly heal that swelling and tenderness before flicking away the excess water from your hand and pulling the absorbed water out of your suit’s fabric.
You weren’t fully healed, but it was good enough. Your chest didn’t ache with every breath and your spine didn’t sting with every movement. You felt considerably stronger than before with clearer vision and the absence of pounding in your head.
The only thing in your head now were your dad’s words. You didn’t know if it was a dream or if you had really crossed the threshold between living and the dead. You didn’t care. All you knew was that he was right. You weren’t done yet.
“No.” Barnes answered. You turned and saw he wasn’t looking at you. Instead, he kept his eyes focused ahead. “You need a hospital.”
“I’m fine.” You struggled in his grip. “Put me down, Barnes.”
“No.”
“Fine.” You replied simply. Using your arms for momentum, you flipped backwards out of Barnes’ arms and landed wobbly on your feet. After quickly regaining your balance, you stood tall. “Where’s Walker?”
“Y/N..” Sam tried gently. “You took a hell of a beating, alright? Just take it easy and we’ll find him later. We’ll get the shield back.”
“You guys don’t get it…I have to do everything myself.” You muttered, turning your hand to see the inside of your wrist. You tapped the screen connected to FRIDAY and had her take the tracking information from Sam’s suit. “Thanks for the tracker.” You saluted Sam before quickly making an air ball and riding it to find Walker.
You had to stop him. You had to get the shield back. If not for Sam, then for your grandfather. He made that shield for Steve, and it should be with the man Steve gave it to. It was Steve’s legacy but it was also Howard’s favorite accomplishment. You couldn’t let it stay in the wrong hands and continue to cause people pain. To take lives.
You heard the footfalls of the boys behind you, but you weren’t stopping. You figured they knew that. All they could do now was follow and fight beside you. All they could do was help you so you didn’t die. You had a feeling that if you went down this time, you weren’t getting back up.
You all found Walker off some old train tracks. He was distraught, likely over losing Lemar. You didn’t blame him for flying off the handle, but you couldn’t excuse taking a man’s life. A man who wasn’t responsible. And to do it so publicly made you sick.
“Are you insane?” Barnes asked you quietly as the three of you approached Walker.
“I’ve been called worse.” You shrugged.
“Walker.” Sam began, as if in warning.
“You guys should see a medic. You don’t look so good.” Walker replied. “And I’m surprised you’re still standing.” He nodded to you.
“I’ll admit, you got a mean swing… If you wanted me to stay down, you should’ve put me down.” You said simply, weaving a flame between your fingers on either hand. You felt the wind dancing around your ankles at the same time, maybe even small tremors in the ground. “This ends now.”
“You saw what happened.” He defended loudly. “You know what I had to do! I killed him because he killed Lemar!”
“He didn’t kill Lemar, John.” Barnes countered.
“Regardless, we don’t trade lives.” You added tensely. Every word between you four wound your muscles tighter. The flames at your hands grew hotter. The air at your feet moved in faster, tighter circles.
“You go down that road, it won’t end well.” Barnes continued.
“I’m not like you.” Walker countered angrily. There was an accusation in his tone, that that's who Barnes still was. He insinuated that he was better than Barnes, but that just showed he didn’t really know who Barnes was outside of his Winter Soldier stories.
You instantly turned your attention to Barnes. His eyes were down, as if he was processing what Walker had said. He looked like someone kicked his puppy and you didn’t know why that expression hurt you as well.
Without really thinking, your hand had reached for his, flame extinguished. You gave his hand a gentle squeeze, as if to say that everything was okay. He looked up at you and offered a tight smile before gently squeezing your hand in return. You didn’t know it but that gesture meant a lot in that moment. You hoped your eyes conveyed the sincerity you intended.
“It was the heat of battle, alright?” Sam tried reasoning with him. But the look in his eyes, the way he eyed you all like you were dinner, showed you he was well past reasoning with. You slowly pulled your hand back and the flame danced through your digits again. “If you explain what happened, maybe they’ll consider your record. We don’t want anyone else to get hurt…”
“You have to give us the shield.” You tried calmly. Even though every muscle in your body was wound tight and every nerve was alive with adrenaline, you followed Sam’s lead. You tried to talk to him, same way you tried with Karli.
“So that’s what this is?” He answered darkly. “You almost had me..”
“You made a mistake. A very public one.” You said simply.
“You don’t want to do this.” He threatened.
“Yeah, we do.” Barnes answered with a nod. He glanced at you, who met his eyes and added a quick nod in return.
Barnes moved in first and Sam was quick to follow. You hesitated just a moment, letting Sam and Barnes make the first move. You had to be smarter and more calculated than the last time, otherwise you’d likely be returning to the States in a body bag. At the first opening you got, you stomped to raise a slab of rock and you kicked it at Walker.i
Walker kicked Sam away and tried to take on Barnes. You quickly took Sam’s place and created a fire blade in your hand. While Barnes had Walker by the shield, you slashed the flame across his back, burning through his suit and his flesh. You choked on the smell momentarily before dropping the flame and creating a rock gauntlet. You slammed your stone covered fist into the burning wound and forced him to the ground.
Walker elbowed you in the jaw and spun to land a solid right hook on Barnes. The contact sent both of you reeling back and gave Walker time to capitalize. He moved to swipe the shield in a direction that could take you both but Sam came through just in time.
The two went hand to hand while Barnes came around to get you. You could feel the bruise forming already as you moved your mouth around, trying to break up the pain.
“Come on.” He said when he got to your side, hauling you to your feet. “Fight’s not over yet.”
“After you, Sarge.” You gestured for him to go.
“Ladies first.” He shrugged.
You chuckled slightly before moving back into the fight. You moved quickly, throwing flame after flame at him. He ducked behind the shield and Barnes came from behind you. Walker countered most of your attacks but you saw a perfect opening. He pulled back to slam the shield against Sam so you yanked up a rock column to connect with his chin. The impact sent him wobbling back and gave Barnes a chance to apply more pressure. After ducking a heavy blow from Barnes, he threw the shield and sent Barnes flying across the room.
Walker was running after the shield as soon as it left his hand, you and Sam moving in right behind him. Walker had Barnes pinned against an old crate, the two fighting for the disk.
“Why are you making me do this?” Walker screamed, a desperate rage in his voice. He launched Barnes again once the sentence left his mouth.
“Bucky.” You muttered when you realized he didn’t get up right away. While Sam took on Walker again, you ran to Barnes’ side.
“You gotta get up.” You told him, kneeling at his side. You watched the electricity crackling around his arm. He winced as he tried to lift his Vibranium arm. “Here, let me just...” You said gently, focusing on redirecting the extra voltage away from his arm.
What you didn’t see was the way Barnes was looking at you. He watched the intent focus your eyes held, the precise movements of your hands, the careful direction of your fingers. The lightning travelled the path of your arms like a road, seeming soaking into your spine and exiting out the other hand. He was in awe.
He was partly surprised you had focused on helping him. You didn’t have to. It would’ve gone away within a minute, but you took the time to help him. He realized that you actually were his friend. And more than that, he liked that you stopped to help him.
The electricity crackled up one arm and to your spine. You turned and focused on Walker, carefully handling the power in your body. Electricity was a tricky thing. One slip of control and you could hurt yourself. You learned that the hard way. You shot it at Walker, your aim slightly off so you hit right near his feet, and caught him just before he tried to land a devastating blow on Sam.
“Come on, James.” You sighed as you pulled him off the ground to sit up. He groaned and leaned against a nearby pillar. You realized you used his first name and you tensed slightly. It felt too intimate to use in those moments.
“We gotta finish this.” Barnes muttered, to which you could only nod. You relaxed slightly when it didn’t seem like he noticed. But he did.
“Did you have a plan or should we just try and tire him out?” You tried to joke.
“You want to be the bait?” He offered and you couldn’t fully tell if he was joking or not.
“Make him go after me?” You asked with raised brows. “Promise you won’t let him kill me.”
“Cross my heart.” He nodded.
“Worth a shot.” You shrugged, jumping back into the fight.
Walker had just yanked Sam out of the air and lost hold of the shield. You threw a blast of air to push the shield further for everyone and slammed a fist to the ground. You used the rock to snag Walker’s ankles and cause him to fall on his face. By the time you caught up to him, he was top of Sam and was ripping his wings apart.
You called a flame to cover the entirety of both hands and ran. You tackled Walker off Sam, your hands moving to his neck as you two rolled and you tried to bury your fingers into the soft tissue. The smell of burnt flesh invaded your lungs and you felt the smoke burning your eyes.
He screamed out from the burns and once your momentum stopped, he had you pinned with a knee on your chest. You coughed from the burnt smell and the increasing pressure. He pulled your hands away easily and squeezed. You cried out as you heard the bone break in your left arm.
“We could’ve been a team.” He sneered ferally.
“I don’t play nice with others.” You commented, trying to buy yourself and Barnes some time. Turning your head to come up with something, you realized you had landed right next to the shield. But so did Walker.
“I am Captain. America.” He practically snarled.
“Yeah?” You asked as an idea came to mind. “You look like a cheap knock off to me.”
He quickly reached for the shield and raised it above his head. As he screamed, you lifted your right hand and flicked a quick bolt of lightning at his chest. He winced inwardly but didn’t budge. In a last ditch effort, you did your best to take control of his blood.
With one hand and the pressure on your sternum, it was impossible to gain complete control. He was fighting you the whole time, pushing the shield with all his strength. You knew once your control slipped, that disk was headed straight for your chest. You groaned as you tried adding your other hand, but the pain was too much. You stomped a foot instead, sending deep vibrations through the concrete foundation. Walker faltered but wouldn’t move.
You thought that was it. Your time was truly up this time. But maybe that would be enough to get that shield back to Sam, back to the man it was supposed to be with. You were about to accept your fate and let him kill you when Barnes made good on his promise. He tackled Walker off of you and handled the fight himself.
You turned on your side and coughed violently, trying to open your airways enough to breathe properly. They traded blows for a minute until Walker managed the upper hand. Sam moved in for the rescue, so he and Barnes were able to get control of the situation. Him and Barnes were turning Walker’s arm outward and you saw an opening.
You pushed yourself to stand and slammed your foot to break loose a piece of the concrete floor. You kicked it forward and heard the sickly pop of his bone dislocating. The pop turned Sam’s pressure into action and he went flying in a separate direction. You almost felt bad for dislocating his arm in such a violent manner, but the shooting pain in your own arm quickly erased that thought.
“It’s mine.” Walker growled as Sam stood with the shield in his hands and Barnes came to stand with you.
“It’s over, Walker.” You answered through heavy breaths, clutching your arm to your chest.
“It’s mine!” He repeated, pulling back to swing on you.
You ducked his arm and the punch was blocked by Barnes. He landed a hard shot against Walker’s jaw and you swiped your leg to knock him over. Barnes lifted Walker and swung him like a baseball bat into Sam, who was moving in hard with the shield. The impact sent the three of them in different directions, the shield landing between them all.
You quickly moved to grab it while the boys groaned and tried to get up. You held the shield in your hands, staring at the dried blood on it. The sight disgusted you. You moved and shoved it into Sam’s chest once he stood.
“You give this away again, I’m keeping it.” You said plainly before pushing off and walking away with Barnes.
“You’re going to the hospital.” Barnes said simply once you caught up with him.
“I can fix myself.” You defended, picking up a stream of water from a nearby puddle and focused on the returning pain in your chest.
“It wasn’t a request.”
“You can’t order me around.”
“I’m pulling rank. I’m a Sergeant, you’re not.”
“Alright, you got me there.” You answered, too tired to really argue with him. “Can we get something to eat first?”
The next day, you three waited in the same room you had talked to Karli in. You did basic healing on your arm so the hospital left it in a sling rather than a hard cast. They said they may have to put pins in your sternum if it didn’t right itself, but that would take a bit of time before they knew.
Sam caught you up on the Karli situation and his buddy, who you learned to be called Torres, came in. You followed Barnes out after he ignored Sam asking about Zemo.
Later or maybe even the next day - things had really blurred together - you and Barnes found Zemo at the Sokovia memorial, exactly where you expected to.
“Thought you’d come sooner.” Zemo said when you two approached.
“Had something else to take care of first.” You shrugged.
“And don’t worry. I’ve decided I’m not going to kill you.”
“You’d never get the chance.” You said easily as Barnes said “Imagine my relief.”
“The girl… She’s radicalized beyond salvation.” He began as if he was just waiting for a chance to give his speech. “I warned Sam, but he didn’t listen to me. As stubborn as Steve Rogers before him. But you- Both of you, can do what needs to be done. Karli has people everywhere and there’s only one way to ensure she cannot carry out her mission.”
“I appreciate the advice.” Barnes answered flatly. “But we’re gonna do it our own way.”
“I was afraid you would say that.” Zemo chuckled.
You stood beside Barnes as he lifted the gun to Zemo. You watched what seemed like relief come across Zemo’s features. You weren’t necessarily surprised to see that expression, given that he had lost everyone. He was willing to take his own life in Siberia all those years ago, so of course he wasn’t afraid to die now. But part of it may have been relief to see Barnes being the one to hold the gun. Part of him likely wanted Barnes to be the killer HYDRA made him.
When Barnes pulled the trigger and the gun was empty, Zemo’s relief shifted to disappointment. You opened your palm and moved the bullets in a circle above your hand. You held your hand up with a small smirk as Zemo stared at the bullets in disbelief. You smiled as the Dora approached.
You let the bullets fall to the ground and tucked your hands behind your back, rocking on your heels. “Told you I’d deliver him myself.” You nodded in greeting.
“I took the liberty of crossing off my name in your book.” Zemo added. “I hold no grudges for what you thought you had to do.. Goodbye, James. Goodbye, Y/N.”
Ayo talked to Barnes for a minute while you looked at the memorial again. So many lives lost.. It still blew your mind how quickly that situation had gotten out of control.
You left before Barnes did. He was still talking to Ayo when you slipped away. Part of you knew you should’ve stayed and explained where you were going. But the bigger part of you just wanted to go. You headed to the airport where the Stark jet was waiting for you.
First, you went to your shared apartment. You quickly packed all your things and left no trace of yourself in the apartment. You thought about leaving a note, something simple that said ‘Heading back to my family. Thanks for the place to crash.’ but even that didn’t feel right. You decided it was best to say nothing so left about two months worth of rent in cash and walked out. You hailed a cab and headed to the lake house.
You spent the last couple days getting to know your half-sister, and she was such a sweet kid. You saw a lot of resemblance to your dad so the first day with her was rough. But you gave her a chance and you were glad you did.
The two of you spent most of the time near the lake. You showed her different tricks you could do with the water. You used the air to blow her hair around and make the leaves fly. You made little Avenger figures from the rocks below. You used your powers for parlor tricks instead of fighting, and the calm felt nice.
When you got the call from Sam, you ignored it. You assumed it was a lead on Karli and at the moment, you wanted nothing to do with it. You did your part and got the shield away from Walker. You couldn’t save that Flag Smasher but you saved Sam and Barnes. You put Zemo back in prison. All your boxes were checked. You could rest… So why didn’t you feel at peace?
It was another couple days before you were contacted by Sam and Barnes again.
You were with Morgan at the shoreline when the car pulled up. You assumed it was someone for Pepper, probably Happy. You were making a crown from the water for Morgan, freezing it above her head before placing it in its place. You spun the air around you two for dramatic effect.
“I now crown thee, Princess Morgan!” You announced theatrically, pushing a wave across the lake that made her giggle. “Sovereign ruler of this great body of water! What is your first decree, your Highness?” You bowed dramatically.
“Trespassers!” She announced, pointing behind you. “Defend our shores!”
“I shall give my life to serve!” You laughed before turning to see who was coming. You saw Sam and Barnes stepping out of the car and you froze momentarily. “Alas, fair Princess, it’s only visitors from another kingdom.”
“Trespassers!” She yelled again with a wide smile. “Get them!”
“I live to serve thee.” You chuckled and shook your head before heading to the boys.
“So this is where you’ve been hiding?” Barnes asked simply.
“Better than fighting.” You shrugged. “Besides, I never rescheduled my apartment walkthroughs… You guys could’ve just called, yknow.”
“It’s not really the kind of thing you say over the phone.” Sam reasoned. “And last time I called, you didn’t answer.”
“Yeah, cause I thought you were gonna ask what I’m guessing you’re gonna ask me now.” You sighed and turned to check on Morgan. She was playing with the rock Avengers you made her, creating a fight scene of her own. You watched as she held the figure of yourself in one hand and threw a rock at one of the other Avengers.
“I’ll set the table for two more.. You don’t talk shop in front of the kid, you can stay for lunch.” You sighed, walking backwards and motioning for them to follow. “Pepper usually makes too much food anyways.”
“Morgan!” You called, heading towards the house with the boys following behind. “Chow time! Come get some lunch!” You waited at the porch for her to catch up.
“What is it?” She asked when she met up with you. “Who are these guys?” She whispered.
“Just some friends..” You dismissed her concerns with a smile as you took her hand while she jumped up the stairs. “Let’s go wash up.”
“Everyone washes their hands before we eat.” You said over your shoulder. “Morgan will show you to the bathroom.” She shot you an accusing look. “I’ll wash my hands in the kitchen so I can reset the table.” You put your hands up in surrender before heading to the kitchen.
“You invited people over?” Pepper asked as you pulled two more plates from the cabinet.
“More like they invited themselves..” You shrugged. “I figured there’d be enough anyway.”
“What do they want?” She eyed you carefully.
“Hopefully just to check in.”
“I didn’t know you were friends with those two.” Her tone betrayed something of disapproval.
“With all the family I’ve lost, I could use a few friends.” You answered sharply. “Oh, and I told them not to talk about anything in front of her so lunch should be pleasant. You’re welcome.”
“Y/N!” Morgan came running into the kitchen while laughing. “You are relieved of your knighthood.”
“I- Huh?” You laughed in disbelief while you pulled her chair out for her and your own chair from beside her. Pepper hid her giggle while bringing the food from the kitchen. “And who will take my place? Who can defend this great land better than me? The prodigy of Earth’s greatest defender, himself?”
“Him!” She pointed to Barnes -who offered a look of confusion- as he and Sam sat on the opposite side of the table. She grabbed your arm and pulled you close so she could whisper her next sentence. “He has a metal arm!” Her jaw dropped to mimic her earlier shock.
“Unfortunately, he won’t be staying long enough to protect your waters.” You said, feigning disappointment. “Sadly, Sir James is only visiting… Besides, I’m stronger than him anyway.”
You felt Barnes’ eyes on you but you ignored them. You didn’t call him James often. Really, that only came to mind as the third time. In Madripoor, taking the shield from Walker, and now. You weren’t sure why you said it but it felt better than calling him ‘Barnes’ when talking to Morgan. But maybe ‘Bucky’ would’ve been better.
“It’s true. I’ve seen it.” Sam added with a chuckle. Barnes simply rolled his eyes with an amused smile. You were relieved that he stepped in and dissipated the tension.
Lunch was surprisingly pleasant. The boys talked to Pepper about how the company was doing and the plans - if any - for rebuilding the Avengers compound. She asked about Zemo and if they knew anything about his escape. You all made jokes and told stories, which made the reunion rather fun.
Once the table was cleared, you took the boys outside while Pepper kept Morgan in the kitchen. You all stood around by the lake. You skipped rocks while Sam and Barnes started their proposition.
“We’re pretty sure Karli is going to attack the GRC vote.” Sam explained.
“Pretty sure isn’t enough to be here, Wilson.” You shook your head. “You’ll need to do something better than that.”
“There’s no guarantee but I bet we’re right.”
“Right… You really think she’s going to be able to travel to New York without someone snatching her up first?” You scoffed. “That move would make sense, I guess. If you can’t change the vote, you stop the vote. Probably kill the Council as a whole and get someone else in there.”
“So you’re in?”
“Am I in?” You laughed. “I did my due diligence. Walker doesn’t have the shield and Zemo is locked up. My hands are clean.”
“So you’re comfortable with quitting on this?” Barnes challenged.
“Why do you care?” You turned on him. “Why do you really care? Let me ask you something, Barnes. Why did you let me stay with you when you didn’t know me?”
“What are you getting at?” He avoided your question. The accusations in your tone hit him deep. It sounded like you were accusing him of ulterior motives, but he just wanted to do the right thing. He was glad for it, being that he quickly got used to having you around. To the point where he even liked having you around.
“I’ve seen my name in your book.” You said simply. “You think you have to make amends because you killed my grandparents. That’s all it’s been about, right? Cause I’m the only Stark left that can forgive you?”
“No.” He shook his head and tried to continue, but you interrupted. He had to admit that it might’ve started like that, a chance to right a wrong from so long ago. A wrong that was the final nail in the coffin of Tony and Steve’s friendship. But the fire in your eyes made it hard for him to admit that to you.
“You didn’t actually care that I was on my own, and that’s fine. I don’t need you to. But you don’t get to stand here and pretend that I was more than just a personal assignment.”
“It wasn’t like that!” He shouted. Barnes was wondering why he couldn’t tell you the full story. Maybe since he couldn’t even admit it to himself.
“What was it like then?” You snapped in return.
“Let’s just take a step back.” Sam tried carefully. You noticed the way he looked at Barnes, as if he was trying to help him.
“Do you see Howard when you look at me?” You pushed Barnes. A vicious heat was sprouting in your chest, inching up your throat and creeping down your arms. “Howard in his youth, believing that you and Steve were some- some unstoppable duo that HYDRA didn’t have a chance against. Or when I had blood on my face, did you see Howard before you killed him?”
“That’s enough!” Sam announced. The firmness of his tone cleared the red from your vision. You realized you had stepped closer to Barnes, almost in challenge. You chuckled in disbelief, stepping back with your hands up in surrender as you chewed the inside of your cheek.
“Y/N, we could really use your help.” Sam’s tone was gentler, bordering pleading.
“Please.” Barnes murmured, so quietly that you weren’t sure you had actually heard it.
“I think you’ve overstayed your welcome, boys.” You replied simply, taking a couple steps backwards. “You’ll get an email when the Compound’s up and running again.”
“Y/N.” Sam tried again but you ignored him.
“This isn’t the kid Steve thought you were.” Barnes called out. “Doesn’t seem like the kid your dad thought you were either!”
“Bucky.” Sam scolded. He knew that wouldn’t convince you to help. If anything, it would push you further away.
You turned on your heel and pulled water up from the lake. In a swift movement, you threw it at Barnes and froze him against a nearby tree.
“You don’t get to tell me who my dad thought I was.” You warned as you stepped closer. “You barely knew him. Both of you barely knew him… And you barely know me.”
“I know you’re not a quitter.” Barnes continued.
“I’m not quitting.” You shrugged, dropping the ice. “Like I said, I did my part. You want a fighter? See if Walker will answer your calls. Maybe call on Sharon for another favor. I’m done. My part in this fight is over, Soldier.”
“We’re a team.” Sam offered. “We can’t do it without you.”
“I think you’ll manage.”
“Did you bring it?” Sam asked Barnes as you walked away.
“You think it’ll make a difference?” Barnes scoffed.
“Just give it to her, dumbass.” Sam rolled his eyes.
“Stark!” Barnes called.
Your hand was on the stair railing but you froze. You turned but didn’t leave your position from the steps. You sighed and leaned against the house as Barnes came up to you with a case in hand.
“What is that?” You asked with a brow quirked in interest.
“I called in a favor.” He said causally as he held the case out to you.
“Again, what is it?”
“Will you stop being so stubborn for one minute?”
“No.”
“Consider it a gift.”
Cautiously, you took the case from his hands. You ignored the brushing of your fingers, though it made your heart stutter.
“Am I going to regret taking this?” You tried to lighten the air around you. There was still a tension lingering from your interaction only a few minutes earlier.
“Do you regret any of it?” He countered sincerely.
“Yeah.” You looked over at the lake. “We’ve lost good people doing this type of work… Can you really blame me for wanting to keep my peace?”
“We really need your help here, Y/N.” He stepped closer, placing a hand near yours on the railing.
“Tell me the truth then.”
“It doesn’t change anything..” He sighed. “You-“
“I want to hear you say it.” You said with a nod, more to convince yourself you were sure. “Is my name in your book?”
“Yeah… It was.” He confessed. “That’s what it was at first but..”
“But what? You saved my life so it balances out?”
“Wha- No. You know, you’re insufferable sometimes.” He groaned.
“Well, I guess that’s settled.” You sighed. “Thanks for this. I’ll send a ‘thank-you’ basket to Sam’s place for you.” You turned and went inside, dismissing your mom and Morgan while you went straight to your room.
You dropped the case on your bed and sat on the ground, back against the wall and knees to your chest while you stared at the so-called gift. It was light but there was weight to it. You had purposefully knocked it against the railing on your way in and felt a different reverberation from it, something you’d felt before but not often.
If you had to guess, you would’ve said Vibranium.
You folded your arms over your raised knees and dropped your chin on top. The case was taunting you and you let it. Your fingers itched to flip the latches, your brain creating possibilities for the contents. With a sudden movement, an all at once action that didn’t allow you to reconsider, you moved to it and pressed your thumb against the scanner.
There was a slight hiss of air as the seal between the two halves broke. There was almost a light coming from the contents and it only tempted you more. You drummed your fingers over the top, closing your eyes to register the reverb. It was Vibranium, but not completely. Not a solid piece, more flexible and bending. Fibers, maybe, or woven between.
You opened your eyes and held your breath while you lifted the top. The case sat open for a few more seconds, just until your chest was burning for air. Then you let out the breath and opened your eyes, seeing a flooded bunch of dark fabric sitting before you. Your fingers grazed the material, tracing the overlapping red and gold lines.
The colors matched your dad’s first suit perfectly. So perfectly it brought tears to your eyes.
“Dad…” You said softly. “I wish you were here right now, give me some advice.”
You gave a broken smile before shutting the case and shifting it out the way so you could sit. Hunched over, elbows on your knees and hands clasped while the tears welled to a point you had to close your eyes.
“You’d know the right thing to do, always did… Me on the other hand, I’m flailing. I don’t know who I’m supposed to be or where I’m supposed to be. I just wanted to be like you, Dad…”
A light knock at your door stole your attention. After a second of silence, Pepper walked in with a small smile on her face. She looked between you and the case before she settled on the bed next to you.
“You already are a lot like Tony.” She said softly and you sniffled. “He hit this kind of point too, where he thought he needed to stop because too many people were hurting.”
“But he didn’t.” You finished her thought and sat up, letting out a heavy sigh. “Pepper, I’m not my dad. I know that. I’ve always known that, but I just thought I could be like him.”
“You are.” She insisted gently. “I see him in everything you do. The way you are with Morgan. The way you talk. The way you carry yourself. Even the way you lose.”
“He’d want me to see this through.” You said quietly. Your voice felt far away, like it wasn’t coming from your body but from someplace else. From the lake maybe, where you and Pepper floated your dad’s first Arc Reactor. “I know that, but I don’t know if I can.”
“Your dad was wrong about a lot of things, Y/N.” She nodded before nudging you slightly. “But he was never, never wrong about you… You’re Tony Stark’s daughter. I don’t think your dad ever found a fight too big. Neither should you.”
“Karli’s threatened you and Morgan already. Sam’s nephews. If we can’t stop her, everyone we care about is in trouble.” You rambled, desperate for some sort of assurance that backing down was the right thing to do.
“Loki threatened you when he came to New York.” She shrugged. “Didn’t stop Tony.”
“Morgan is all the family you have, Pep. I can’t let that get taken away. You said it yourself. I don’t know how to do this. I can’t clean up my own mess. ”
“I’m gonna say this once, kiddo. Your dad didn’t know how to clean up his mess until he was standing in the middle of it.” She chuckled sadly. “But he found a way. And you are Y/N Stark, just as smart and capable as your father. Morgan thinks so, too.”
“You really think it’ll all be okay?”
“I do. After this is done, if you’re still done with it, then you can rest.”
You offered a small smile and she gave the same in return. You threw your arms around her and she laughed in surprise before returning the embrace. You weren’t sure where the path to Karli would leave, but you knew Pepper and your dad’s ghost was right.
You had to finish what you had started.
You packed a bag, separate from the suit Barnes gave you, and called up your family’s pilot. The jet was ready within the hour and you gave Morgan one last hug on the way out. She clung to your leg for a few minutes and you felt the little tear puddles on your pants. She muttered that you had to promise to come back, to protect Stark Waters, and you did just that.
Your flight was relatively quick and you hailed a cab to take you the rest of the way. The driver was chatty, especially when you told him where you were headed. Sam’s family was well-loved in his community and you liked to hear it. You kept your head down and signature Stark glasses on your face as you walked the few blocks to Sam’s sister’s place.
You hesitated to knock, worried you wouldn’t be welcomed. Or maybe you were worried you’d be too welcomed. Either way, you turned away from the door. You called another cab and had them take you to the pier, this driver also knew Sam’s family and directed you to the right boat.
You stepped aboard and left your suitcases up top before you headed down to the engine room. You remembered hearing from the drivers that Sam was trying to fix it up and you decided to help with the hard parts. You activated your glasses and the AI showed you where there were issues.
You were working quietly on your own, ordering parts as you went, when someone else showed up. Sam first, then Barnes soon after. You were startled and looked at them with wide eyes, but when they gave you knowing smiles - the type that said they knew you would show up - you turned back to your work.
Later that morning, you three had the water pump pulled apart. Sam and Barnes were talking about whether or not a certain bolt existed in a big gear and you ignored them, examining the gear itself. You rolled your eyes in amusement as they went back and forth until Sam’s sister Sarah came up.
“The water pump is not the problem.” She instead. “I don’t come up into the sky and tell you how to barrel roll or whatever so don’t come down here and start messing with things you clearly don’t understand.”
“It’s not the problem but it will be soon.” You said, lifting the propeller shaped gear. “The corrosion’s gonna lead to this thing not bringing in enough water and it’s gonna overheat. And the impeller is cracking. Don’t worry though. I ordered new ones and they should be here by end of day. Easy fix.”
“Stark.” She nodded.
“I thought about a whole new pump but…” You shrugged. “She’s still got some kick in her. Just needed a few add-ons.”
“Alright, off.” She shooed you three away. “Off, bye. Thank you so much.”
You stayed around the boat for a while longer while Sam and Barnes went off to do something you didn’t care to join in on. Instead, you waited around for your parts to arrive and you put them in place. By the time Sam got back, you had finished your portion of the rebuild. You were tightening a few last bolts while Sam and Sarah talked, though you caught the end of their conversation.
“What would be the point of all the pain and sacrifice if I wasn’t willing to stand up and keep fighting?” Sam said simply, as if he truly understood his place in the fight.
And at the same time, you seemed to understand yours.
After hanging around and training for a few days with Sam, he got a call. His friend Torres caught a cell ping that matched the same pings from across Europe, just before the Flag Smashers went through. The ping was set in New York.
You were quick to set up travel plans to New York. Sam said he would get in touch with Barnes while you did your end. After the calls were made and a time table was set, you found Sam opening his case.
“Looks good.” You said as you went in, peering over to see it. “It’ll suit you.”
“How’d yours look?” He asked.
“Stylish, easy to move in, and a little homage to my dad… Pretty much perfect.”
“Pretty much?”
“Depends if it’s fireproof.”
At that, Sam laughed.
“You ready for this, Captain?” You gave him a small nudge with your elbow.
“Are you, Stark?”
“Yeah.” You nodded with a small smile. “I think I am.”

What’s your favourite work you’ve written?
i thought about this a lot bc whenever i start a new project, i’m obsessed with it. so i have so much love for Nightmare, WHB, MAG, suncity and sweet hibiscus tea. even works i abandoned like sin miedo and the sour mini-series. but i think overall, my top top top favorite as it stands is probably woman 😅
that series was my first Matt Murdock piece and it was really well received. i feel like it reached so many people and the amount of people that fell in love with this piece, it made my heart so full. and really, the notes to me aren’t so much about attention but more about seeing my work reach people from everywhere and knowing it made someone smile or blush or need a cold shower. not only that, but i feel like it really set the stage for fingers crossed, for angel baby, for MAG.

SIN MIEDO - BUCKY BARNES (FOUR)
Tumblr media
EPISODE FOUR - THE WORLD IS WATCHING
// Series tags: @calums-betch @bangtanxberm @buckyys-doll // SM Masterlist // Same thing, feedback is appreciated <3
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Stark!Reader
Word Count: 8,690
Summary: Yet again, the trio was trying to catch up to Karli. Only now, John Walker has inserted himself into the mix. His own entitlement clashes with Y/N’s earned (and natural) ego. When the two go hand to hand, who comes out on top?
“How could you free him?” She asked. She didn’t use a name, but you could tell it was directed more to Barnes.
“We need his help.” Barnes answered.
“With time, will, and the resources, the Winter Soldier programming was removed from you like a rotten fur.” She began, walking a slow circle around you two.
“And I’m grateful for that, for everything you and Shuri have done.”
“Zemo murdered our King T’Chaka at the U.N. The man who chose us, chose me, to protect him.”
“I understand.”
“Very little, if anything, of our loss and our shame.”
“Ayo..” You tried. “He’s a means to an end.. Just give us some time and I’ll deliver him to the Dora Milaje myself.”
“Eight hours. And then we come for him.” She said firmly, holding her hand out to Barnes. He handed back the two beads before she left.
Barnes turned and grabbed you by your arm, dragging you to where you left the boys. He didn’t say anything but you struggled in his grip. You were perfectly capable of waking yourself back. Once you stepped through the doorway, Barnes pushed you forward.
“Seriously?” He finally said. “You followed me?”
“Am I supposed to apologize?” You laughed in disbelief. “You can’t just take off and act sketchy and not expect me to be suspicious.”
“What did you honestly think would happen?”
“Okay, that’s enough.” Sam tried to step in. “Both of you just calm down, alright?”
“He’s the one yelling at me!” You defended.
“Because you don’t trust me!” Barnes snapped.
“God, you are so dense!” You shouted.
“What is going on?” Sam asked loudly. You threw your hands up in resignation, mentally giving up on the situation. You blew out a sigh as you walked around the counter and poured yourself a drink.
“Wakandans are here and they want Zemo. I bought us some time.” Barnes explained.
“Were you followed?”
“No.”
“How do you know?” Zemo countered.
“Cause I know when I’m being followed.”
“Not every time.” You muttered into your glass as you sipped your drink.
“Sam..” Barnes said. His tone was resigned, disappointed almost. “Karli bombed a GRC supply depot.”
“What?” You said softly.
“What’s the damage?” Sam asked quickly.
“11 injured. 3 dead.” Barnes read the article on his phone. “They have a list of demands and are promising more attacks if the demands aren’t met in full.”
“She’s getting worse.” Zemo commented.
“She’s just lost.” You shook your head and moved around the counter, away from Barnes. You hopped up to sit on the countertop beside Sam, your now empty glass by your side. “She’s hurt and trying to help her people. She just needs.. guidance.”
“I have the will to complete this mission.. Do the three of you?” Zemo challenged.
“You’re talking about killing a kid.” You emphasized. “She’s younger than me! You can’t be serious.”
“You’re seeing something in her that isn’t there. You’re clouded by it.” Zemo explained as if it was obvious. “She’s a supremacist. The very concept of a super soldier will always trouble people, leading to things like Nazis, Ultron, Avengers..”
“You’re talking about our friends.” Sam said tightly.
“And family.” You added.
“The Avengers, not the Nazis.” Barnes said, as if that point needed to be specified.
“Karli might be radicalized but there has to be a peaceful way to stop her.” Sam reasoned.
“The desire to be superhuman can’t be separated from supremacist ideas. Anyone with that serum is inherently on that path.” Zemo continued.
“Anyone?” You challenged. “What about Steve?… What about him?” You pointed to Barnes behind you.
“She will not stop and will escalate until she kills you. Or you kill her.”
“You’re wrong, Zemo.” Barnes added. “The serum never corrupted Steve.”
“Touché.. But there has never been another Steve Rogers, has there?”
“Because there is no one like Steve.” You shrugged. “The serum amplifies the person someone already is, i.e. a good man becomes great and a bad man becomes worse. For Steve, he was brave and selfless and dumb as a fucking rock but so kind and a- a leader. For Barnes, he’s stubborn but-”
“We should just give him to the Wakandans right now.” Barnes cut in as he walked to sit on the couch.
“And give up your tour guide?”
“Yes.”
“F.R.I.D.A.Y. can get us anywhere we need to be.” You offered, pulling your Stark tech out of your pocket.
“You had that this whole time?” Barnes asked in surprise.
“Yeah. But I don’t use it a lot.” You shrugged, slipping the tech back into your pocket. “She doesn’t take it personal.”
“Wait. Donya was like, a pillar of the community, right?” Sam thought out loud.
“That’s what it sounded like.” You nodded.
“When I was a kid, my TT passed away.” Sam began.
“Your- your TT?” Barnes asked in confusion.
“Yeah, my TT, yeah.” Sam confirmed, almost defensively.
“Who is your TT?”
“Fine, my aunt passed away.” Sam rolled his eyes. “And the whole neighborhood got together for this like- week long ceremony.”
“The community will host a service for Donya..” You realized. “My mom’s neighborhood did the same thing when my uncle died. I assume they did it for my mom too.”
“Worth a shot.” Barnes agreed.
“We should clean up.” You said finally, pushing yourself from the counter. “We’ve been all over the damn place and I feel sticky from Zemo’s cheap leather seats.”
“I’ll have you know-“ Zemo tried.
“I don’t care.” You replied in a singsong voice as you left to get yourself ready.
Later that day, the four of you headed to a huge stone building. Through the massive doors, it led to an open courtyard. There were a few people moving things around, GRC posters up on the walls, and piles of abandoned objects scattered about. Sam opted to head upstairs while Barnes stayed with Zemo. You wandered off on your own, looking for something or someone that could help you.
After a little bit, you watched from a distance as Zemo talked to a group of kids. Sam came and met with Barnes while you took a couple steps closer.
“What the hell is he doing?” Barnes muttered.
“You ever have a kid tell you too much information about their personal lives?” You thought, not moving your eyes. “Kid comes up and you tell them you like their shoes and suddenly they’re telling you how mommy and daddy don’t sleep in the same bed anymore.”
You left them with that thought as you walked up to Zemo. You seemed to have cut off what he was going to say.
“I’m glad you kids found my friend.” You said gently, smiling at them. “And I was just wondering where my candy stash went.” You chuckled, to which the little girl at the front of the group gave you a playful but mischievous smile. “He hasn’t said anything bad about me, has he?”
The little girl shook her head.
“That’s good.” You knelt to her level. “Did he tell you how we want to see Donya?” She nodded. “She was very dear to me, and my friends came to make sure I was okay.” You nodded towards the boys. You caught a glimpse of an irritated expression on Zemo’s face and figured he was going to say something against them. “Can you help me?”
The little girl nodded and leaned forward to whisper in your ear. When she was done, she smiled softly and looked to the candy Zemo still had in his hand.
“Thank you, honey.” You smiled. “You can have the rest as a thank you gift. I’ll bring you something else next time I see you.” You winked to which she giggled.
You turned and began walking towards the boys, pulling Zemo by his sleeve. You called a small flame to your palm to create heat under Zemo’s sleeve. He winced slightly but made no physical reaction.
“Try something like that again and you won’t live long enough for the Dora to take you.” You warned before meeting the boys and pulling your hand away.
When you got back, Sam and Barnes talked about what they did or didn’t find and about Karli. You sat quietly at the counter while you poured yourself a drink. Zemo stood on the other side and made himself some tea. You noticed a small burnt patch on his jacket and you couldn’t help but smirk proudly.
“Y/N.” Barnes called, causing you to spin in your seat to face him. “What did the little girl tell you?”
“The funeral is later today.” You answered, swishing the contents of your cup around.
“This afternoon.” Zemo added.
“The Dora will be here for you any minute.” Barnes told Zemo after making his way to face him. “They’re probably lurking outside that door right now so keep talking.”
“So you can turn on me?” Zemo chuckled. “She already showed she’s willing to.” He pointed to the blackened patch on his jacket and you had to stifle your chuckle by finishing your drink. “I’d prefer to keep my leverage.”
“Can I see that?” Barnes asked as he took the glass from your hand. You opened your mouth to make a smart comment but Barnes had already launched the cup at the wall, whizzing past Zemo’s head so close you saw his hair move. You saw fear flash across Zemo’s features but it cleared as soon as it came.
“You want to see what someone can do with leverage?” Barnes threatened lowly.
“Hey.” You hopped out of your seat and stood between them while Sam came in from the other side. “Stand down, Sergeant.”
“Don’t engage him.” Sam added. “He’s just gonna do that stupid head tilt thing and try to extort you. Let me make a call.”
“Come on.” You said calmly, pulling Barnes by his arm. Barnes followed you easily to the counter and took a seat in the stool beside you.
“Why do you do that?” Barnes asked quietly as Zemo went to sit on the far side of the room.
“Do what?” You replied in the same quiet tone. You realized that your hand had moved to holding his hand.
“You call me ‘sergeant’ when you’re trying to keep me from doing something.” Barnes pointed out.
“Cause it works? I don’t know..” You chuckled nervously. “Just one of things that happen, I guess… I can try not to if you want.”
“No, no.” He smiled slightly and gave your hand a small squeeze. “It’s okay. It’s kinda nice.”
The time to go to the funeral came quickly and the three of you hardly left before running into the only person you wanted to see less than Karli.
“Hi Walker!” You called in annoyance.
“How’d you find us this time?” Barnes added.
“You guys really think three Avengers can just walk around Latvia without drawing attention?” Lemar answered, which made you nod your head in acknowledgement. It was a fair point.
“No more keeping us in the dark.” Walker demanded.
“Oh, so he’s tough now.” You laughed.
“You can start by telling us why you broke him out of prison.”
“We did no such thing.” You shrugged as Barnes answered “He did that by himself technically.”
“Take it easy.” Sam stepped in when Walker got hostile. Your hands had already grown warm and were ready to go to work. “Before it gets weird.”
“Am I the weird part?” You asked Barnes, who tilted his head as if he was thinking and then nodded. “Fair enough.”
“I know where Karli is.” Zemo added.
“Okay.. Where?” Walker pressed.
“It’s a memorial, dipshit.” You rolled your eyes. “You can’t barge in and throw that shield.. It’s disrespectful enough that you have it in the first place, to use it in there would be even worse.”
“We’re gonna intercept her there.” Sam continued.
“That means civilians, high risk of casualties.” Lemar noted.
“So we move in quick. Take her by surprise.” Walker tried.
“Negative.” You shook your head. “Sam and I are gonna try and talk to her.”
“I’m not gonna lose her again.”
“The person closest to her died.” Sam explained. “She’s vulnerable.”
“I understand that more than anyone here.” You added sadly. “If anyone can reason with her, it’d be between me and him.”
Walker quickly stepped in front of you all to try and stop you. “No, no, no, no. Stop. Alright? Stop. I think we’re way past reasoning with her. Unless you forgot that she blew up a building with people still in it.”
“And if you go in there hostile, the people at that memorial are at risk.” You emphasized. “Then you wouldn’t be able to put yourself on a pedestal anymore, and clearly, the one you’re on now would be quite the fall.”
“You guys walk in there cold, she could kill you both.” Lemar tried.
“If we walk in hot and it goes sideways, more people will die.” You countered plainly. “If I die, that still leaves us with a chance in Barnes and Sam. And maybe some extra motivation.”
“You gonna let them do this? Let her do this?” Walker turned to Barnes. “You’re gonna let your partners walk into a room with a super soldier alone?”
“They’ve dealt with worse.” Barnes said plainly. “And they’re not my partners.”
You didn’t know why, but something about Barnes’ words hurt. You weren’t his partner. Maybe he was right, but hearing him say it seemed to make it real. If you were friends, did you have to call yourselves partners? Or were you automatically partners if you were friends?
You shook the thoughts quickly, masking any evidence from your face. You weren’t going to give Walker any sort of ammunition to use against you and something about him told you he liked to manipulate people around him. Especially those he thought himself to be above.
“I don’t need his permission.” You said firmly.
“I used to do trauma counseling for soldiers, alright? This is right up my alley.” Sam explained. You were mildly annoyed that you had to explain yourselves to John Walker. What authority did he have over your group? You had more experience in dangerous situations like the one you were walking into more often than he realized.
You took a stand against Loki when you were fifteen. Granted it was a small stand from your bedroom window because your dad had JARVIS lock your door, but you took down a good amount of the Chitauri. You fought against Ultron when you were eighteen and almost didn’t make it off the falling city. You went against Thanos right before you turned twenty one. And now you stood in Latvia, pushing twenty two years old with almost that many near death experiences - and one actual death experience - explaining yourself to John Walker.
“I know.” Walker nodded. “And I know those soldiers which is why I know this is a bad idea.”
“If they can talk her down,” Lemar chimed in. “It might be worth a try.”
“Thank you.” You mouthed to Lemar, who offered a small nod in acknowledgment. He definitely wasn’t as unbearable as Walker was.
“If we’re done here…” You said simply, pushing past Walker and letting everyone follow behind you. “It’s rude to keep a friend waiting.”
You led them to the young blonde girl you met earlier.
“Hello, dear.” You smiled, kneeling to her level. “I told you I’d have something for you, didn't I?” You handed her a small stack of bills, her eyes widening in amazement. “For your family…”
Usually you travelled with your own money in various denominations and appropriate currency, but you hadn’t had the time to switch anything out. You came across a small stash that you assumed was Zemo’s so you left the equivalent US balance and switched the currencies.
“Can you show us?” You asked gently.
She nodded and you followed her to the service.
Walker cuffed Zemo to some pipes, telling you and Sam that he would give you ten minutes. You turned your attention to Barnes and raised your brows in question. You left the unspoken question in the air, if Barnes would stall and give you more time if you needed. He nodded slightly so you turned and followed Sam in.
“You think we can do this in ten?” You asked as the two of you made your way to the upper level.
“We have to try.” Sam nodded.
“Are you scared?”
“Are you?”
“Like he said, I’m not indestructible so..” You shrugged before gently pushing open one of the windows so you could lean through it. “One cannot be brave who has no fear.”
You and Karli made eye contact for a moment and you saw her tense. You nodded slightly, hoping it conveyed to her that she should continue. After a few minutes, the room had cleared so you and Sam went down to meet her.
“I saw you back there.” She told you without facing you.
“We’re here to talk.” Sam said carefully.
“Bold of you.”
“We’re unarmed.” You confessed. “It’s just us.”
“Yes, but I know who you are… Y/N Stark. You don’t need anything to be dangerous.”
“While I’m flattered, I’m not here to fight… But I am sorry for your loss.”
“Don’t condescend me.”
“I’m not.” You shook your head.
“I know what it’s like to lose someone.” Sam offered.
“Not like this.”
“I lost my dad recently, but I’m sure you’ve heard the story...” You began sadly, your hand moving to the metal cuff on your wrist. “And yet no one talks about the fact that I watched as it happened and could do nothing... Karli, I know what it’s like to lose the person who looked after you. That person you could always depend on and that person who motivated you to push forward and- and be better. But this - everything going on - this doesn’t have to be a war.”
“They started a war once they kicked us out of our new homes and onto the street.” She countered easily. There was no real malice in her tone, no venom. There was a disappointed anger in her words, like she had been let down one too many times. “People around the world need me, millions of them.”
“I can’t speak for millions but I understand you.” Sam continued. “I understand your frustration. Your helplessness.”
You walked yourself around the room as the conversation continued. You felt the thick stone of the building, noted how many ways in and out of the room there was. You paid special attention to the floor, in case any uninvited footsteps came your way.
“You want me to stop because people are getting hurt, right?”
“It’d be nice if innocent people weren’t caught in the crossfire. It’s happened enough at our hands, it has to stop.” You commented as you examined the ornate windows. “Innocent people were caught up in an Avengers incident in Lagos before the Snap and it ended with the Avengers split in half. An innocent king was caught up in a bombing. An innocent nation was mutilated by Ultron.”
“And what if I’m making the world a better place?” She suggested.
“If you’re killing people, it’s not better. Just different.” Sam replied quickly.
“People adjacent to the fight shouldn’t pay the price…” You agreed, coming back to stand with Sam.
“You’re either brilliant or hopelessly optimistic.” She smiled slightly.
“Can’t we be both?” Sam chuckled lightly. You couldn’t help but smile a bit. In that conversation, you could see Karli was still a kid. She was still lighthearted and honest, and maybe you and Sam were getting through to her.
“No..”
“Yknow, we know this guy…” You began casually, building a ball of air for you to sit on as Sam hopped on the table beside Karli. “He knows a lot about super soldiers, probably more than anyone on the planet. And he said something interesting about you...”
“He said you’re a supremacist.” Sam finished.
“Me? That’s ridiculous.” Karli defended. “I’m trying to end supremacy! These corporations- the beasts who run them- are the supremacists.”
“Okay, so let me ask you this.” Sam said carefully. “You have more serum, right?”
“So?”
“Are you gonna increase your army?” He asked. “Innocent people are dying.”
“They’re not innocent.. But they’re roadblocks and I’d kill them again if I had to.” She answered quickly.
“Woah, that was a bit too quick.” You pointed out.
“I didn’t mean it like that.” She backpedalled. “He tricked me into sound like-“
“Like what?”
“The people I’m fighting are trying to take your homes too. Why are you here instead of stopping them?”
“My sister is waiting for that same answer.” Sam answered.
“Yeah, I’m sure my step-mom would like to hear from me…” You nodded, deciding you’d go back to the lake house with Pepper and Morgan when all was said and done. “We’re not your enemy, Karli. We actually agree with your fight, believe it or not.”
“But we can’t get with the way you’re fighting it.” Sam said simply. “I’m sure she wouldn’t either.” He pointed to Donya.
You weren’t sure how much time you had left. You broke up your air ball and placed yourself back on your feet. You had to be able to give yourself more time if and when you felt Walker coming. As soon as your feet hit the ground, you caught the vibrations of his steps.
“We got company.” You said quickly. You tried to lift a wall of rock to block the doorway but you were too late.
“Karli Morgenthau, you’re under arrest.” John Walker announced as he entered.
“So you just wanted to trick me until your backup arrived?” Karli accused you and Sam. You could see the betrayal in her expression. Any opening you had to talk her out of whatever she was planning next was quickly slammed shut.
“We’re not with him!” You defended quickly.
“We had enough time to talk.” Walker talked over you.
Karli connected with a hard shot to Walker’s shield, sending him into you and Sam. She took off through the building and Barnes followed behind her after what seemed like a second’s hesitation when he saw you on the floor. You got yourself to your feet and shook off the vertigo from the collision. You weren’t sure if your head hit the shield or the table. All you knew was it connected with something metal.
You and Sam finally met with Barnes, who had lost sight of her.
“Aren’t you glad we ran into the Star Spangled Bummer?” You complained, rubbing your aching temple.
“You alright?” Barnes tried, reaching a hand to move yours.
“Yeah, just a bump.” You waved him off when you heard the shots. “Do we know where Zemo is?”
“I left him cuffed.” Barnes answered, meeting your gaze while you processed the sounds and circumstances.
You quickly dropped to the ground and flattened your palm. Instead of your usual taps, you slammed your other fist into the ground for a further, deeper search.
“That slippery son of a bitch.” You muttered when you found him. You tapped both of the boys on the arm and nodded for them to follow before taking off into a sprint. But by the time you got there, it was too late. Karli was gone, the remaining serum vials were smashed, and Walker had knocked out Zemo.
“We missed the fun.” You pouted as you examined the scene. “Let’s get him up.” You sighed and headed down the steps to the unconscious baron. Barnes followed you down and helped you get him up before throwing him over his shoulder like a bag of grain and bringing him back to the house, where you had to take a few minutes to yourself in your room.
After Barnes came and got you from your room, he brought you to the counter and poured a drink for you and him. You smiled softly in thanks and he tipped his glass in response.
“Something’s off about Walker.” You commented as you spun the contents of your glass.
“You got that right.” Sam chuckled.
“I agree. I know a crazy when I see one.” Barnes agreed.
“Because you are crazy.” You nodded and took a peak at Barnes. The comment earned you an eye roll and an amused smile.
“Can’t argue with that.” Sam added.
“Shouldn’t have given him the shield.” Barnes commented.
“I didn’t give it to him!” Sam argued.
“Incoming.” You muttered into your glass before finishing the contents.
“Steve definitely didn’t.” Barnes instigated.
Before Sam could offer a rebuttal, Walker kicked the door in.
“And incoming has came in.” You announced, smacking your legs before getting out of your seat. “You got a warrant, Rent-A-Cap?”
“I’m ordering you to hand him-“ Walker pointed firmly to Zemo. “-over. Now. Let’s go.”
“Oh, interesting… I’m gonna go with a word you probably hear from women a lot.. No.” You answered lightly.
“You need to learn to follow orders.” He said firmly, taking a step closer to you.
“Following isn’t in a Stark’s nature.” You challenged easily as you took a step closer as well. “You want to go toe to toe with me?”
“Slow your roll.” Sam said from your side, pulling you back. “Shield or no shield, the only thing you’re running in here is your mouth.” You chuckled from behind Sam, who now placed himself between you and Walker. “We had Karli and you overstepped. He’s-“ He pointed over you to Zemo. “-proven himself useful today and we’ll need all hands on deck for whatever’s comin’ next.”
“His hands are kinda tied, considering he’s locked to the government, therefore useless..” You commented, earning another chuckle from Barnes.
“How do you want the rest of this conversation to go, hmm?” Walker threatened.
You quickly sidestepped Sam and used a ball of air to push him back. You faced Walker with your head high and shoulders back. Your familiar flames travelled up your spine and through your chest to your fingers.
“I’d love to see this conversation go in that direction.” You nodded. “You think you’re so tough? Prove it.”
“Should I put down the shield? Make it fair?” He mocked.
You laughed in disbelief as you took a few backwards steps.
“Y/N?” Barnes tried, to which you shook your head.
“I’d be worried if you actually knew how to use it.” You returned the joke. “Should I not use my powers? Make it fair?” You raised your brows in challenge and made a ‘come on’ motion with your fingers.
Walker came at you quick. A hard right hook that you ducked. An attempted shot with the shield that you rolled over. You snuck in three body shots and an uppercut before a backwards walkover that connected with his chin and gave you space.
He moved in before you were back on your feet so you let one foot slide to the side to drop into a Black Widow-esque pose. You spun your extended leg to knock him on his back and continued to slide on your bent knee until you had enough space to get up.
Once Walker got back to his feet, he threw the shield at you. It seemed to move comically slow compared to how Steve would throw it when you two sparred. You stood firm in your spot, braced yourself, and used both hands to catch the shield.
The impact of the Vibranium rattled up the bones of your arms and into your shoulders, but you would never show it. There was no pushback, no sliding backwards, only a slight turn with the momentum. You saw the wide eyes from Walker, only making your smirk grow wider. You looked down at the shield for a moment, a sad feeling bubbling in your chest. Howard made this for Steve. You gently rested the shield against one of the beams of the room before going back to your fight against Walker.
You made a beeline for him. He was standing in a staggered stance so you used his knee as support. You pushed off and hooked one leg around his neck, bringing your other knee up to secure your foot. You flung your body around to flip Walker to his back and you kept rolling through a tumble. You knelt and gave one hard shot to his nose and before you could get another shot in, you felt the Vibranium hitting the floor.
“Dora.” You commented, getting up and moving to stand with Sam and Barnes. “Guess our eight hours are up.”
As Walker stood, a spear came flying by his head and you gasped at the speed it came flying in with.
Ayo spoke to Barnes in Wakandan before Walker tried introducing himself. Ayo stared at him unimpressed, maybe getting second hand embarrassment from the blood trickling from his nose, that he while Walker tried to de-escalate the tension.
“Might wanna take it easy over there, Copy Cap.” You bit back your smile. “And you got blood on your face.”
“You would definitely wanna fight Bucky and Y/N before you try to tangle with the Dora Milaje.” Sam commented with the same amusement you had.
“The Dora Milaje doesn’t have jurisdiction here.” Walker tried.
“The Dora Milaje have jurisdiction wherever the Dora Milaje find themselves to be.” Ayo replied firmly.
“Y’know, this is why I love her.” You told Barnes with a wide grin on your face.
“He didn’t land a single shot on you, did he?” Barnes asked you quietly, pride leaking into his words.
“Are you impressed?” You raised your brows playfully and nudged him with your elbow.
“Take it easy, it’s just Walker.” Barnes chuckled. “But you did good, Kid.”
“Kick his ass!” You called once the action between Walker and the Dora began.
“We should do something.” Sam reasoned.
“Looking strong, John!” Barnes mocked.
“He deserves to get his ass kicked by women… Twice… In the same day. Just one after the other.” You shrugged.
“Bucky.” Sam said firmly. Barnes sighed before moving to stop Ayo from potentially killing Walker. Sam moved to stop the other Dora from killing Lemar. You, however, plopped yourself on the countertop and poured yourself another drink while Zemo hid in the bathroom.
You let Barnes and Sam tangle with the Dora Milaje. You weren’t one to interrupt a well earned ass-kicking. You were especially impressed when one of the Dora threw her spear through the straps of the shield and pinned Walker to the table.
“Ten points for style.” You commented with a chuckle.
“Not helping, Y/N!” Sam yelled.
Before you could offer a rebuttal, you heard the heavy thud of Vibranium, different from the knocks of the spears. You turned and saw Barnes’ arm sitting on the floor. You stared in shock, not able to move your eyes. Barnes seemed just as shocked as you were.
“He is gone.” Ayo announced, drawing your attention slowly away.
You slid off the counter and patted Barnes on the shoulder before continuing to the bathroom. You investigated the room while Barnes fit his arm back into place. You saw the hatch on the ground and you tapped your foot and felt how deep the tunnel system ran under the building.
“Of course there’s tunnels.” You sighed and turned to tell everyone. You watched as Lemar and Walker left so you motioned for Sam and Barnes to see what you were looking at.
“I can’t believe he pulled an El Chapo.” Sam commented.
“I can.” Barnes said simply.
“Should we try to find him?” You added, looking between them and the hole in the ground.
“I don’t know if we can.” Sam said while Barnes walked away.
The next day, you three were walking the streets. You weren’t sure what the boys were looking for, but you weren’t going to sit out. Sam had gotten a call from his sister, and moments later you got a call from Pepper.
“What have you gotten yourself involved in this time?” She asked accusingly. “It’s just one thing after another with you, just like Tony. You don’t know when to quit.. At least your father could clean up his messes.”
“Nice to talk to you too, Pepper.” You bit back your sarcasm. “I’m great, how are you?”
“Do you not realize that your actions have consequences?”
“What is even going on?”
“I just got a call from Karli Morgenthau. She’s threatening my daughter, Y/N.”
“Shit.” You muttered, stopping your steps. Your pause drew attention from the boys, but you held up a finger to silence them. “What did she say?”
“That you need to meet her at some coordinates, just you and Sam. Who is Sam?”
“Wilson. Guy in the bird suit that Steve brought. Keep going.”
“If you don’t, then she said she’ll come here to meet Morgan.”
“Take Morgan and get out of town. Use cash if you can. I’ll handle it, just keep yourselves safe.”
“Y/N-“
“It’ll be fine, Pepper. Nothing’s gonna happen to her… Trust me, alright? I know Dad would..”
“Your dad would know what to do. You don’t.”
“I have help.. I’ll figure it out.”
“I just- I can’t lose her too.”
“You won’t… Just let me do what I have to do. I’ll talk to you when it’s taken care of.” You said and ended the call.
“What happened?” Barnes asked and Sam ended his call soon after.
“Karli just threatened my nephews.” Sam said angrily.
“She threatened Morgan too and Pepper is pissed.” You added, shoving your phone back into your pocket. “She wants to meet me and Sam, alone.”
“And now I know where.” Sam said, showing you the screen with the message.
“No.” Barnes shook his head. “I’m coming with you.”
You all quickly made your way to the North Plaza and found Karli waiting for you. There wasn’t time to argue with Barnes about whether or not he should go. You figured it was only fair, considering how you often inserted yourself into business you didn’t need to be.
“You called my sister? That’s how we’re gonna play this?” Sam asked angrily.
“And my step-mom? You threatened my sister?” You added, familiar heat climbing your spine and up your neck but seemingly hotter than you’ve felt in the past. Calling Morgan your sister felt weird coming out of your mouth, but you didn’t let on.
“I would never hurt them.” She replied simply, as if that was obvious. “I wanted to understand you better… I see you didn’t come alone.”
“Trust me.” You warned, letting the flame dance vividly between your fingers. “He’s going to be the least of your problems.”
“You have to end this. Now.” Sam said firmly.
“I don’t want to hurt you.” She explained.
“I wouldn’t stress about it.” You countered.
“You’re tools in the regimes I want to destroy.. You’re not hiding behind a shield. Or a suit of armor.. If I were to kill you two, it’d be meaningless.”
“Should we be offended by that?” You asked, habitually trying to break the tension.
“I wanted to ask you to join me.” She offered. “Or do the world a favor and let me go.”
The thought of joining Karli had never crossed your mind. You weren’t even sure why she thought you three would. Sure, you didn’t agree with John Walker, but it was more of a personal plight than anything regarding the government. After a moment of silence - or what looked like listening - Sam checked the screen on his wrist and turned to Barnes.
“It’s Walker.” He explained, leading to Barnes jumping to the floor below. Karli was just as quick and collided with Barnes on his way down. Sam jumped to take on Karli.
You quickly made an air current to ride to the ground floor. You helped Barnes to his feet and the two of you took off running while Sam took flight.
You two worked through a couple Flag Smashers. Surprisingly, yours and Barnes’ fighting styles complimented each rather well. You were quick and never stayed in one spot too long so while they were trying to catch you, you led them straight to Barnes.
As you and Barnes caught up with Sam and Walker, a blade came flying at you. Barnes caught it as you had thrown an arm up so it would’ve hit your forearm instead of your head.
“You’re welcome.” He nodded.
“What? Couldn’t risk my pretty face?” You teased with a smirk.
He shot you a quick wink in response to which you felt a blush creep across your cheeks. You two quickly jumped into the fight with the Flag Smashers. Only the heavy crack that echoed through the room stopped everything.
You turned and saw Lemar slumped over. Discreetly, you lifted your heel and forced it down. Nothing came back from Lemar. He was dead. Looking between the standing Flag Smashers, the guilt was behind Karli’s eyes.
The boys turned to follow Karli but you hesitated. You watched Walker for a bit and he ran through the window. Part of you wanted to tell Sam and Barnes, but you didn’t have time. You followed Walker through the window on an air current. But even that wasn’t fast enough. The desperate cries of the Flag Smasher echoed through the streets as your feet hit the ground.
You sprinted through the crowd and slid on your knees to get to the fountain. You threw the water at his hands when they rose above his head, freezing it as soon as it made contact, but you weren’t strong enough. Walker broke free with ease and slammed the shield down into the man’s chest with a crushing force, a sickly crack that echoed through the now silent streets. And you felt it almost instantly. Through your powers, you learned people gave off vibrations through the ground in their pulse. You literally felt the Flag Smasher’s heart stop.
“You… You killed him.” You whispered in horror. You had to quickly mask your disgust as you turned to face Walker. You instantly turned into a picture of courage, of strength and power, into something to give the people watching - in the courtyard and on the internet - someone to put faith in. “Give me the shield, Walker.”
“You want it?” He mocked. His voice was deranged, any traces of the man he was before now gone. You weren’t sure if you should attribute it to Lemar’s death or the adrenaline from the public execution. “Come and get it.”
Before doing anything, you glanced around and noticed the huge crowd gathered around you. You couldn’t let Walker get away but you couldn’t let the people get hurt. With no other options, you took some water from the fountain and created a ring that got bigger and bigger to force the crowd back. When you felt there was enough space for you to fight safely, you turned the water to ice. It was terribly thick and tall enough that nothing would get through or over it unless you want it to.
“I could use some help, guys.” You muttered over comms before jumping into a fight. You were quick and agile, avoiding his heavy hits. With the complete mental break and unhinged rage, he wasn’t holding anything back.
“We’re coming, Y/N.” Barnes answered. “Just hold on.”
You utilized the water from the fountain for attacks but nothing you did was enough. You used the air around you for high, graceful flips to avoid the clearly deadly hits. Not even fire was enough to slow Walker’s rampage.
“I don’t know how long I can last against him on my own.” You said honestly. “Just get here as fast as you can… I’d rather not be added to the list of dead bodies today.”
You opted to call flames to your hand and hold them as if they were knives. You were thankful Nat had taught you to fight with small blades and that you forced Barnes to spar with you to keep your skills up. You had to keep changing your eye level, spinning on a knee or flipping over the man completely to give yourself a chance.
You swiped at the inside of his leg, burning a line across the tender meat and watching his knee buckle slightly. Switching one hand to hold an ice blade, you slammed it to the same strip you burned. While you let it melt, you kicked out at the inside of his knee to force him to the ground. In a swift move, you slammed a fist into the ground to cause a pillar of rock to rise swiftly and catch Walker under his chin. The impact threw him flat on his back so you pushed yourself into a reverse tumble to give yourself some space. You also brought up an angled slab of rock to hide behind and possibly use as a jump point later.
“Any time now.” You panted, calculating your next course of action. “I’m running out of tricks.”
“We’re almost there.” Sam promised.
“How long does it take a super soldier and a guy with wings?” You rolled your eyes as you got to your feet.
You came out to face Walker in time to see the shield flying at you, exponentially faster than the last time. You quickly moved into a backwards walkover, landing in a kneel and spinning on your knees to face where the shield was headed. You redirected the air around it and sent it flying back at Walker with enough force to push him back against the ice wall. You pulled some of it towards you before closing your fist so it looped around his wrists and froze, his hands now stuck in ice cuffs and the shield clattering at his feet.
“Stop this.” You said firmly. “I’m taking the shield.”
He simply chuckled darkly as he closed his fists. You watched in horror as he strained, gradually raising the volume of his scream until he broke free. Quickly you understood what was different. No normal person can break out of two inch thick ice.
“You took the serum, didn’t you?” You thought out loud.
You silently scolded yourself for not realizing sooner. Jumping from the window with no hesitation. The speed he threw the shield. The nearly unrecognizable feral attacks. The strength he broke the man’s chest with. The speed he had to catch up to Flag Smasher.
He ignored your question and swung the shield at you while you were in the air trying to get yourself some space, connecting solidly with your chest. You cried out loudly but still heard the sickly crack and felt the deep shatter of your sternum. The impact sent you to roll across the gravel and smack into the concrete of the fountain, landing beside the fallen Flag Smasher.
“We all know you did this.” You said weakly, using the concrete structure beside you to get yourself to your feet. “And you used Steve’s shield to do it!” You screamed, your voice breaking when you said your friend’s name and you gestures to the dead man beside you.
“It’s mine!” He shouted back. He kicked out brutally at your chest. emptying your lungs of air and sending you flying back against the fountain. Whatever was left whole in your chest now shattered, a jolt of hot pain slicing up your spine. Your head hit with a disgusting smack as a cry of pain left your lips. You practically felt your brain jerking around in your skull.
“You don’t deserve it.” You said with all the clarity you could muster. Your ice wall fell to a water puddle as you coughed roughly. Your breath caught and cried out in pain, gingerly touching the tender area.
A hard shot to your face and you heard a third crack, maybe the most grotesque yet. Your head whipped back from the impact and you felt the blood leaking down your face. You turned your head and spit the blood that had pooled in your mouth.
“Now or never, guys.” You said fearfully as Walker stood over you. Your eyes darted to either side, realizing you had no moves left. You couldn’t put enough force behind the elements you manipulated to make an impact. You didn’t have the strength to make a difference either so you simply wiped the blood off your face and thought if you could crack the rock open beneath you.
Truthfully, you recognized you were defenseless. You were backed into a corner. You were terrified, afraid you were going to die. Despite everything you had said, you wanted to live. But then again, you’d be with your dad.
“He’s going to kill me.” You whispered, the terror in your bones causing your voice to come out so small and foreign as your fate truly set in. “Sam?! Barnes!?”
“They won’t save you.” Walker threatened from above you as he placed a heavy foot on your stomach to pin you and force whatever air you had recollected out of your lungs, as if you had any strength to get away. “No one’s going to save you.”
“Help me.” Your breathing became shallow, the tears gathering in your eyes and blurring your vision. Or maybe that was the head injury. All of your injuries were blurring together into all over pain. “Guys!?… Sam?” No answer. Desperately, you clawed at his boot and tried pushing it away. That strain only caused your torso to ignite in burning pain and you collapsed.
Walker’s arms raised above his head again. The blood of his last kill dripped onto your forehead, causing the tears to fall quickly and your stomach to tighten. You would’ve thrown up if you had anything in your stomach.
“Barnes?” Still no answer. “Please… Please no.”
Nobody was coming to save you.
“Bucky!” You screamed in terror, the simple name tearing through your throat. Barnes was closing in when he heard it. The way his name sounded coming from you, the panic and pure fear dripping from your voice. It sent a shiver down his spine and only urged him to move faster.
You threw your hands up in hopes of shielding your vision from your impending death. If you were going to die, you wouldn’t let the last thing you see be Steve’s shield coming at you. Only, nothing happened.
You peaked out from behind your fingers and saw Walker frozen. A familiar sensation tingled through your fingers as you realized you took control of his blood again, fueled only by the desperation in your heart to survive. You stared in shock as he fought against your control. You couldn’t move but you held him in place with every bit of strength that you had left. The shield was dangerously close to the center of your chest, as if there was a magnet in your heart that was drawing the shield near.
You felt two hands under your arms, one cold and one warm. You kept both hands in front of you as you were guided away, frozen with the fear of your near death and suffocating feeling that he could still kill you. Sam came in feet first and sent Walker tumbling away. With the ghost of your strength, you brought the water from your ice wall and let it cling to your hand. You unzipped the collar of your suit and slid that hand under the material and pressed it to the center of your chest and let it slink around to run the length of your spine at the same time in a lame attempt to heal yourself. With a wince, you turned your head to see Barnes hauling you away.
“Can you walk?” He asked gently once you were far from Walker, hidden down one of thousands of alleyways. You could see what looked like fear in his eyes, honest concern for you. You nodded, but collapsed against him once you were on your feet.
“Thanks Bucky.” You managed as he carefully picked you up.
“Don’t die on me, Y/N.” Barnes said worriedly.
“It’s okay..” You mumbled, the words coming out a slurred jumble. “My dad’s waiting for me.”
You leaned your head on his shoulder as your eyes drifted shut and you slipped into a cold unconsciousness. You were too tired to answer or fight to stay awake, too tired to even care about surviving.
-
You reunited with your dad, meeting up with him at the lake house. You were using the water beside you, making circles around you and swirling it around your dad. You practiced directing it with your feet, practicing walkovers and aerial cartwheels on a rock balance beam you made while you had the water trail behind you like a ribbon.
Your dad took test flights in new suits, zipping past you and weaving through the trees.
You two later sat together at the water’s edge. You leaned against him while his arm was around you. You watched peacefully as the setting sun reflected off the calm waters.
“I missed this.” You said finally. “I missed having you around.”
“I know, kiddo.” He sighed happily. “I missed you too.”
“It wasn’t fair.”
“No… No it wasn’t.”
“I can stay with you, right?” You sat up and gave your dad a hopeful look. Wide eyes and a cheesy smile, the same look that usually got you your way.
“I think Barnes and Wilson need you…”
“But I want to stay with you, Dad… This is the way it’s supposed to be. You and me against the world, right?”
“Y/N, you can’t leave them.”
“I shouldn’t have to choose between you a-“
“Hey..” He cut in gently, putting his hands on either of your shoulders. “I get it, okay? You think I wanted to leave you? I did it so you could grow up. So you could have a good life.”
“How is it a good life when you left as soon as I came back?” You cried.
“Life is what you make it.” He smiled softly. “We lived well… Now you get to live better.”
“Better than being with you doesn’t seem likely… But I guess you’re right. I’ll just have to do my best to make you proud, Dad. I love you.”
“I’m already proud of you, mini me. I always have been.” He kissed the top of your head sweetly. “I love you, Y/N. I’m so proud of the woman you’re becoming.”
“I don’t know how to do this without you.”
“Yeah. You seem so lost without me.” He teased.
“I’m serious, Dad!” You laughed, dropping your head against his chest. “I don’t know what to do. This guy- I couldn’t stop him. He has Steve’s shield and he killed someone… I couldn’t stop him.”
“Maybe you’re not meant to do this alone…” He tried softly, patting your back. “But you have to get back to find out.”
“I don’t want to go.” You nearly whispered.
“It’s not your time, Y/N/N… I’ll be here when it is.” He said confidently. He gently lifted your face to meet his eyes. “You really think I can go anywhere without my kid?”
“I’m sorry I couldn’t save you… I should’ve tried to heal you.” You admitted sadly. Maybe that was really why you didn’t want to go, why you held so much guilt. Not because you wanted to die, but because you wanted to apologize to your dad for not helping. For seemingly failing him.
“It was the only way. I was always risking my life… New York, Sokovia, Titan. I knew it was coming sooner or later.” He pulled you in for a tight embrace. “You gotta get back now, alright? They’re lost without you.”
“I love you, Dad.” You mumbled into his chest while you held him tightly. “I love you to the stars.”
“I love you too, Y/N… Around the moon and back.”

SIN MIEDO - BUCKY BARNES (THREE)
Tumblr media
EPISODE THREE : POWER BROKER
series tags: @calums-betch // SM masterlist // another madripoor gif bc i loved those scenes
Pairing: Stark!Reader x Bucky Barnes (platonic/flirty)
Word Count: 9,209
Summary: Leaving John Walker in the dust, Y/N had to follow Barnes to a shifty contact. That leads them to Madripoor and an unexpected, and suspicious, ally. Juggling her grief, her control, her own doubts, the pressure of Walker on their tail, and a school girl crush, can she handle the fight?
The next day, the three of you found yourselves in Berlin. You weren’t surprised how easy it was to get through security. Flashing a smile and an ID with Stark on it opened pretty much any door. Surely it had nothing to do with Sam working with the Air Force again.
“Last time I was in Germany, we weren’t on the same side.” You commented nostalgically as you three followed the security guard. “How the tables have turned.”
“I’m gonna go in alone.” Barnes said as you all approached the last corridor.
“Not a chance.” You laughed as Sam said “Why?”
“You’re Avengers..” Barnes reasoned. “You know how he feels about that.”
“It’s not like you two were known for frolicking in the sun together.” Sam mocked.
“He was obsessed with HYDRA. We have a history. Trust me, I got it.” Barnes assured before turning to leave. When Sam didn’t stop him, you did.
Quickly you reached out and grabbed his wrist. You made no effort to pull him back and he didn’t exactly pull away from you. He looked back at you with a stern expression, that he wasn’t going to cave.
“You’re not going alone, Barnes.” You said seriously, tightening your grip on his wrist slightly.
“Y/N-“ He tried.
“No.” You cut in. “I don’t care. I can do this all day.” You offered with a slight smirk.
He chewed the inside of his cheek for a moment before caving. He nodded slightly, his expression betraying that he was slightly impressed. “Fine. Hurry up.” He said, nodding for you to follow.
“Yessir, Sergeant Barnes.” You chuckled as you followed behind Barnes. The comment earned you an eye roll and a scoff, but nothing was said.
“You sure you want to do this?” You checked as you two waited for security to let you in. “I can handle it on my own..”
“I can do it.” He nodded as you approached the cell.
“I’m sure you can.” You shrugged casually. “It was more about if you wanted to.”
You stayed a couple steps behind Barnes, using the shadows to stay mostly out of sight. You didn’t want to talk to Zemo, let alone be in the room. But part of you wanted to make sure that nothing happened. You didn’t know if you could stop Barnes if Zemo triggered the Winter Soldier, but you probably had the best shot.
You watched Barnes’ body language carefully. From your angle, you could see the look on his face. The tension of his shoulders. The hand you could see was in a tight fist. There was a certain fear in his eyes, in the way his jaw clenched. You could tell that a part of him, even if it was a small part, was scared that Zemo would send him back to the Winter Soldier.
Zemo tried the trigger words but earned no reaction from Barnes. You let out a breath of relief and saw Barnes’ shoulders relax as that tension left him. You didn’t doubt that Barnes had control, that his time in Wakanda was enough to rid his mind of HYDRA’s influence, but you also knew Zemo was crafty. You didn’t trust that he didn’t have a couple tricks up his sleeve. But then again… So did you.
“For what it’s worth, I’m sorry.” Zemo said, catching your attention. “It was never personal.”
“Seemed kinda personal.” You muttered to yourself. You were anxious, shifting your weight between your feet. You wondered what Sam was feeling back in the hallway but you couldn’t go back. The tension in your body was begging for a release, seemingly burning it’s way through your skin. There was a crackle of electricity between your fingers, a skill you hardly had a grip on. You only figured out how to use it in quick bursts or it would build itself up in moments of high tension.
“You brought a friend?” Zemo questioned, his eyes turning to you. You sunk deeper into the shadows.
“Someone recreated the super soldier serum.” Barnes said to redirect his attention. There was more control in his tone and it settled something anxious in the pit of your stomach. “I need to find out who.”
“You’re assuming HYDRA has something to do with this.” Zemo said simply, studying Barnes as he spoke. The expression Zemo held, the way he was looking at Barnes like an experiment, tempted you to reveal yourself. Something about it made your skin crawl, but you knew you had to refrain. You needed the info. “Which is why you came to me, which means you’re desperate…” A smug tone laced his voice and made you want to gag. “Lucky for you, and your friend in the shadows, I know where to begin.”
“And in exchange?” You finally spoke, stepping into the small sliver of light and taking your place beside Barnes. “What’s it going to take?”
His sly smile made you instantly regret the question.
Without explaining anything to Sam, you and Barnes led him to a series of tunnels underground. You opted to remain silent through the endeavor, knowing you wouldn’t be able to explain it right. While Sam pestered Barnes about the plan, you were busy finding the best route.
You kept one hand against the concrete wall, tapping your fingers to feel the vibrations. The tunnels were empty save for you three. They lead to a basement where you stopped for Barnes to walk Sam through a “hypothetical”.
“Please tell me this is an actual hypothetical.” Sam looked to you. In the meantime, you were toying with balls of air in your palm. You were balancing on them in a handstand.
“Yeah.” You lied. “It’s a hypothetical.”
Barnes continued to explain everything while you purposefully distracted yourself. You weren’t a huge fan of this plan, but Barnes had a point. Zemo offered a starting point. Walker had nothing. You guys had nothing. Though you’d never admit it, you needed Zemo.
“Speak of the devil.” You commented when you felt his footsteps approaching. You landed back on your feet as Zemo entered the room.
“You’re going back to prison.” Sam insisted.
“If I may-“ Zemo tried.
“No!” Sam and Barnes yelled simultaneously.
“Sorry.” You said with a shrug, bringing your forearms up and slamming them together. The movement called walls of earth to rise and trap Zemo in a thick rock casing. “It’s nothing personal.”
“When Steve refused to sign the Accords, you backed him.” Barnes countered.
“You broke the law and stuck your neck out for him.” You added.
“I distinctly remember you-“ Sam pointed to you. “-were on the other side.”
“My name’s not anywhere on that document.” You corrected. “I was a minor. Wouldn’t have been legally binding.”
“I’m asking you to do it again.” Barnes tried.
“I really think I’m invaluable-“ Zemo began again.
“Shut up!” You groaned, lifting the rock to meet his chin. “I will go all the way up.” You threatened before turning your attention back to the boys. “I’m with Barnes. I know it’s crazy but it’s the best shot we got. And we gotta move fast cause Walker is working on this too.”
“Okay.” Sam agreed finally. You dropped the rock prison and looked to the boys. “You don’t make a move without our permission.”
“Fair.” Zemo nodded.
“Otherwise, you deal with me.” You said simply. His eyebrows raised in interest, a slight challenge glinting in his eyes. You lifted your hand in front of your face, palm to the side. As you lowered your hand, you angled it so your fingertips pointed at Zemo. You saw his muscles tighten as he struggled but gave in to your control and went down to his knees.
“Dad once said the best weapon was the weapon you only had to fire once.” You said as if you were contemplating the words. “Let’s hope he was right.” You released Zemo before Sam spoke up.
“So where do we start?” He asked.
While Zemo was collecting his things from one of the cars, he explained where to start. He mentioned a woman named Selby as a starting point.
“This whole time you were rich?” Sam asked wildly as you approached a private jet.
“I’m a Baron, Sam.” Zemo answered in a matter of fact tone. “My family was royalty until you destroyed my country.”
“Eh.” You shrugged. “The Stark jet is nicer.”
You sat across from Barnes while Sam sat across from Zemo. You weren’t too interested in conversation. You didn’t know where you were going, nor did you really care. The sudden movement of Barnes made you snap to attention.
“If you touch that again, I’ll kill you.” Barnes threatened lowly with a hand at Zemo’s throat.
“At ease, soldier.” You reached over to tug on Barnes’ jacket. After a moment’s hesitation, he came and sat back down.
“I understand that list of names. People you’ve wronged as the Winter Soldier.” Zemo said with a solemn nod. He gestured between you and Barnes. “What I don’t understand is the relationship here. Are you two… involved?”
“Don’t push it.” Barnes muttered angrily as you simply rolled your eyes.
Sam talked about the book, that it used to be Steve’s. He bragged about how he suggested something for Steve to write in it. You remembered you had suggested some things for him to look into too, your favorite had been all the horror movies you got him to add.
Sam and Barnes then bickered about the Troubleman soundtrack, to which Zemo chimed in. You groaned slightly, throwing your head back and staring at the ceiling. The conversation quickly shifted to Steve and super soldiers, mildly peaking your interest.
“Cities fly. Innocent people die.” Zemo carried on.
“You forget who you’re talking to.” You laughed in disbelief.
“Pardon?”
“You’re talking about Sokovia… I was there. And my dad nearly died - yet again - trying to save the world… Trying to fix his mistake but no one cared about that part, right?.”
“Only nearly..” He agreed. “I think it’s fair to say the Avengers, none of you were really innocent.”
“And he actually did die to bring back half the universe so excuse me if I don’t share your bitterness.”
“It seems that you do, Y/N.” He analyzed, watching the response your eyes gave away.
“Shut it.” You rolled your eyes.
Conversation quickly shifted to Madripoor. Zemo and Barnes explained what it’s like, what it was. It sounded like a place out of a book, but given that your career was fighting A.I. powered robots and a giant genocidal purple lunatic, nothing was surprising anymore.
“James, you will have to become someone you claim is gone.” Zemo told Barnes.
A solemn expression came over Barnes. You couldn’t tell if it was regret, remorse, or something else. You leaned forward, resting elbows on your knees. You nodded to motion Barnes to come closer. He leaned forward in the same way.
“You sure you’re okay with this?” You asked quietly. “We can find another way, or we can do this witho-“
“I’m not sitting out.” He cut in. “I’ll be fine. Why do you keep trying to sideline me?”
“You won’t be alone.” You offered genuinely. “Sam and I got your back.”
Later that night, you walked the bridge that led to Madripoor.
“So who am I supposed to be, exactly?” You asked after Zemo had explained Sam’s character for the night.
“Rosalinda Calvillo Del Santos.” He said, showing you a picture of the girl. “Heiress to a huge cartel ring out of Mexico City.”
“Woah, she’s hot.” You nodded, slightly impressed. “And this dress… Seems like it perfectly matches her style.”
You motioned to the dress you wore. It was a tight, short black silk dress with a 4 inch slit up the right side that showed off your body beautifully. The chest of the dress hung perfectly to keep you covered but still catch attention. The straps were silver jewels in a halter style while additional pieces of thin black silk stretched across your back in a criss cross pattern.
“She's also a bit sadistic.” Zemo added nonchalantly. “But I’m sure you’ll play that just fine.”
“Fun.” You nodded.
“She kinda does look like you.” Sam commented as he leaned over to see the picture while he adjusted the cuffs of his jacket.
“She can’t be that hot then.” Bucky said sarcastically.
“Oh shut up.” You laughed as you pushed Barnes slightly. “You’re just used to girls in the 40’s and the whole modest look, huh?”
“Yeah yeah.” He rolled his eyes. “You ever gonna retire the old man jokes?”
“Maybe, but you have to admit how good I look.” You countered.
“Not a chance, little lady.” He smiled and shot a wink your way as he opened the car door for you.
“Well, Sergeant Barnes, what a gentleman.” You said sarcastically, holding a hand to your chest. “I’m so flattered.” You patted his chest as you sat down, scooting to sit in the middle.
The car ride was quick, although the motorcycles that surrounded your vehicle put you on edge a bit. The cold feeling of Barnes’ vibranium arm pressing against your own arm was the only thing that managed to keep you from burning through the car.
“The bracelet needs to come off.” Zemo pointed out on your walk to the bar.
“Excuse me?” You answered quickly, your opposite hand moving quickly to defend the metal cuff.
“Rosalinda only wears gold. She’s never been seen with anything else.”
“But this bracelet is-“
“Hideous” Zemo cut in.
“No! It’s from my dad, jackass!” You argued and stopped your steps.
“Here, let me have it.” Barnes held his hand out, to which you simply took a step away from him. “Y/N, come on.”
“No, I- I can’t take it off.”
Barnes sighed slightly before sliding two fingers under the collar of his shirt to pull a small chain out. He reached behind his neck to unclasp it before offering it to you. “Put your bracelet on here. Nothing’s going to happen to it.” Barnes explained.
“What are…” You asked softly as you reached for the chain. Your fingers grazed the small metal shapes dangling at the end, turning them so you could read the inscriptions. “James Buchanan Barnes..” You read silently. “These are your tags.. Barnes, I can’t ask you to-“
“You’re not asking. I’m offering.”
“Y/N..” Sam tried gently. “It won’t be that long, I promise.”
“Okay, fine.” You agreed reluctantly. You handed Barnes back his chain before reaching for your cuff. You put two fingers together above the metal cuff, focusing on separating it enough to slide your wrist out. Your eyes lingered on the band of lighter skin that was hidden by the cuff, proving to everyone around you that you never took it off. Once you freed your wrist, the cuff circled the fingers you used to open it. You glided it to hook over Barnes’ chain, connecting your fingers again to reconnect the metal. “Please don’t lose it.. It means everything to me.”
“Trust me.” He nodded as he reclasped his chain around his neck. He tucked the tags and your bracelet under his shirt and patted it lightly. You smiled gently in thanks before turning back to the door.
“Good. Now, escort her in.” Zemo instructed Bucky. Barnes held out an arm for you to take so you looped yours through his, making Zemo click his tongue at you. “Other side.”
“What difference does it make?” You asked in annoyance.
“The Del Santos family -especially Rosalinda- loves to show power.” He explained. “Having the Winter Soldier makes you powerful, but being on that side-“ He pointed to Barnes’ metal arm. “-shows it off… They also know how to barter for that power, if you know what I mean.” He gave you a pointed look and nodded towards Barnes, assuming you would understand what he meant. You hoped it wouldn’t come to that, but you understood.
“So treat him like a trophy?” You replied with a raised brow as you stepped around to switch sides. “Easy enough.”
“Oh god.” Barnes mumbled under his breath. “Don’t abuse this.”
“I think you’ll like being shown off a little.” You smirked slightly, keeping your head high as you followed Barnes’ lead into the building. “I’ll try not to go too far.”
Like flipping a switch, you fell into character once you stepped into the crowd and instantly made a statement.
“Listo para cumplir, Soldado de Invierno?” You said simply, keeping your head high and shoulders back as you followed Barnes through the crowd.
You heard the whispers, asking if that was really the Winter Soldier. You had to admit, it gave you a feeling of pride in your chest to see everyone look at you in awe. The respect in their eyes when they met yours was interesting. It was different from the respect you got as Y/N Stark. There was an underlying tone of fear in the looks as well.
Your small group stayed at the bar, Barnes kept his head on a swivel while you leaned your elbows on the bar top behind you. You lazily turned your head to check on Sam but saw the bartender slicing open a snake.
“Al menos no tengo que hacer nada que… asqueroso.” You said to Barnes before chuckling. He made a small sound of agreement, the tiniest hint of a smile toying with his features. “Vamos. Diviértete, soldado.”
“Mi misión es protegerte.” He replied in a flat, monotonous voice.
“Ay, díos.” You groaned, turning to face the bartender. “Señor? Bourbon, neat. Please.”
“Since when do you drink, Santos?” He nodded in amusement as he poured your drink.
“Well, it’s been a rough week.” You sighed, lifting the glass in thanks. “Put it on my friend’s tab.” You winked at Zemo before turning back to look at the busy crowd.
“You lot aren’t welcome here.” A bald man came up to Zemo.
“We have no business with the Power Broker.” Zemo started. “But if he insists…”
“He can come and talk to me.” You cut in, resting a hand on Barnes’ shoulder and sipping your drink. “Or bring Selby for a chat.” You shrugged.
“What do you know about the Power Broker?” Sam asked when the man was out of earshot.
“Here he is judge, jury, and executioner.” Zemo said quickly.
“We’ve got company.” You said into your drink. You set the cup down and cleared your throat. “Soldado de Invierno, hora de ir a trabajar.”
The man reached a hand for your shoulder but was instantly snatched by Barnes. You had to give it to him. He was a very convincing actor. It seemed easy for him to slip back into that person, to become the Winter Soldier. You knew it wasn’t really him, but the violent scene in front of you was hard to deny.
Sam saw it too. He looked to you in concern, hearing the same click of the guns that you did. You easily took the few steps to stand between him and Zemo.
“Don’t worry.” You said simply, maintaining the cocky smirk you wore as Barnes did his work. “He’s got this.. But that’s not what that look is about, is it?” You glanced at Sam and saw the expression on his face. It held concern for Barnes but also the flash of a memory when the Winter Soldier attacked you all after the UN bombing.
“You break character and this whole bar is against us.” You used your glass to cover your lips while you spoke. “I don't like this either but-
Before you finished your sentence, Barnes slammed a man on the bar top by his throat. You instantly slipped back into character to respond.
“Buen trabajo, querido soldado.” You giggled with a pat on his chest. He let the man go as the bartender told you Selby was ready. You swallowed the rest of your drink before putting the cup back on the bar.
“Vamos.” You nodded. Barnes held an arm out for you to take, which you quickly did.
“You okay?” Sam asked Barnes quietly as you followed Zemo to Selby. A sharp nod was the only response Sam got.
You let Zemo talk to Selby since you had no idea who the woman was. You stayed towards the back of the room with Sam and Barnes, your arms still linked. The cold metal against your arm was the only thing that kept you from bursting into flames.
It was easy enough to be Rosalinda. Confident, powerful, demanding respect, beautiful and a little flirty. It mildly shocked you that you could play into her sadism. You didn’t know where you pulled that from. Maybe Nat taught you better than you thought. Outside of that, Rosalinda was close enough to a Stark that you didn’t feel like you were pretending too much. And lucky for you, you learned Spanish as a child. It was the people that knew her that worried you. One wrong mannerism, one wrong saying, and the whole thing was blown.
“What’s the offer?” Selby asked after an attempted flirt with Sam. You caught Zemo’s signal, a silent attempt to tell you it was your turn.
“I suppose it’s more my offer.” You spoke up.
“I didn’t know Calvillos travelled this far.” Selby smiled mischievously.
“Well I heard you like to play hard ball.” You said with a sly smile. “Del Santos can play too. My offer is him. The Winter Soldier, el soldado de invierno.” You offered confidently, walking a small circle around Barnes. “And the words to control him, of course.”
You traced your fingers along his shoulders, across his back and down his metal arm. You felt him tense under your touch, but his demeanor never faltered. “He will do anything you want.” You added, facing Barnes and gently running your hands down his arms. “I’m sorry.” You whispered honestly. Your expression reset to a playful pride as you spun to take your original place beside Barnes and watched for Selby’s reaction.
“This is a fun surprise. I’m glad I didn’t kill you all immediately.” She said happily.
“You have information I want.” You stepped in front of Barnes, blocking him from her line of sight. “You give me everything I need and I give you him.”
She bit her lower lip as she smiled. Her eyes looked Barnes up and down, and it made you want to gag.
“Hello? Are we going to do business or are you going to ogle him all night?” You asked in annoyance as you crossed your arms.
“A bit testy tonight.” She said with an entertained smirk and your pulse jumped. “You were right to come to me.” She said with a nod. “The serum is here, in Madripoor. You’re gonna want to talk to Dr. Wilfred Nagel. Power Broker had him work on it but it didn’t go as planned.”
“Is Nagel still here?”
“Crumbs for free but the bakery will cost you.” She wagged a finger at you. “And before you get cute, you can’t find Nagel with me.”
Before either you or Zemo could offer a rebuttal, Sam’s phone went off. You felt in your bones that it wasn’t going to work out well if he answered that call.
As Sam was on the phone, which Selby made him answer on speaker, she circled you and Barnes. You nodded towards Sam, allowing Barnes to take a few steps away from you.
Before you knew it, your cover was blown and the shot rang out. Selby was dead and the boys easily took down the other two guys in the room.
“This is going to come back to us.” You said as you stood on the other side of the room, as far from her body as you could be.
“Just drop the weapons and follow my lead.” Zemo said, trying to gain control of the situation.
Without other options, you all followed Zemo out and through the streets of Madripoor. Every turn you took, you felt more and more eyes upon you. Phones buzzed every second and you could only assume it was word spreading of Selby’s death.
“I don’t like this.” You muttered.
As soon as the words left your mouth, gun shots sounded. Barnes grabbed your hand and began running with you following close behind. You ducked the shots and grabbed Barnes’ hand a little tighter. You turned to see Sam struggling to keep up.
“I can’t run in these heels!” Sam yelled.
“Try running in stilettos and a mini skirt.” You replied in annoyance.
“You want to stop them?” Barnes tried.
“I can’t really focus right now.” You answered with an eye roll. You were going to stop and try lifting a rock wall behind you or creating a gust to push them back or even try to summon a quick lightning burst.
Shots came from a high window and took out the two men behind you before you tried to fight back. Zemo came out from behind a dumpster and made a stupid comment about a guardian angel.
“What a coward.” You sneered, Barnes holding you back when you made a move to slap the Baron.
“This is too perfect.” A familiar voice came from the shadows. You pulled away from Barnes and called a small flame to your palm. “Drop it, Zemo.”
“Sharon?” Barnes asked.
“You cost me everything.” She ignored you guys. You didn’t let the fire go out.
“Wait, Sharon.” Sam tried. “Someone recreated the super soldier serum. Zemo had a lead.”
“That explains why you guys are here and why Selby’s dead.”
“Why are you here?” You asked carefully.
“I stole Steve’s shield, remember?” She scoffed. “And I took the wings for your ass-“ She pointed her gun at Sam. “-so you could save his ass-“ Her gun pointed to Barnes. “-from his ass.” Her gun landed on Zemo. “I didn’t have the Avengers to back me up so I’m in Madripoor.”
Sam tried reasoning with Sharon but got nowhere.
“We need your help.” You tried and let the flame in your palm die out. “Please. We- We didn’t have any other options…”
With a heavy sigh, Sharon told you all to follow her. You were the first to follow her footsteps. After a second, the other three came behind you. You were questioning the timing of Sharon’s reveal, but overall you were grateful she showed up. Things weren’t looking great up until then.
“Seems like being on the run treated you better than it treated Sam.” You commented as you looked around at Sharon’s place.
“If I was going to be a hustler, I was gonna live like one.” She said, a hint of pride in her tone.
The three boys then talked about the art, and whether it was real or fake. Sam didn’t believe them until a quick google search told him the truth. Sharon made you all change your clothes, pulling out a whole rack of clothes for the boys to look through and letting you sift through her closet.
You decided on a fitted maroon wrap-style dress. It was a soft material, fitting the curves of your body perfectly. The spaghetti straps criss-crossed behind your neck. You kept your same black heels and made your way back to the group and took a seat with Barnes on the couch.
Sam and Sharon talked a bit, ridiculing the idea of heroes. She called it hypocrisy, claiming that’s why Sam gave up the shield.
“Wow.” You teased as you sat. “You clean up nice, Barnes.”
He smiled slightly at you. “Hey, I didn’t know you spoke Spanish.” He said simply.
“Huh?” His statement took you by surprise. It wasn’t the response you expected. “Right. Yeah, I learned it when I was a kid. Dad tried to teach me French but Spanish was more natural cause my mom's side of the family.”
“You look good too, by the way.” He added and gave you a slight nudge. “Cause I know that’s what you wanted to hear.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Your face.” He said simply. “You give away a lot of emotions in your face.”
“I do not!” You insisted quietly with a chuckle, smacking his arm.
“Yes, you do.” He laughed with a nod.
“Wait a second…” You paused, crossing your legs and leaning towards him. “Were you just nice to me?” You teased with a wide smile.
“Don’t push it.” He chuckled.
“Hey... I’m sorry about using you as bait with Selby. I figured that’s what Zemo was hinting at… It didn’t seem like there was any room for me to say no.” You said honesty. The look in his eyes when you dangled him in front of Selby, you could tell it brought back so much of his trauma. That inability to say ‘no’. You truly had felt wrong for doing it. “I shouldn’t have-“
“Y/N.” Barnes said and put a hand on your leg. Your words were cut off instantly. “It’s alright.. It was for the mission.”
“That doesn’t make it right.” You said softly. “You’re not just an asset or a trophy. You’re my friend.”
“How is the new Cap, by the way?” Sharon asked, drawing your attention.
“Don’t even get me started.” Barnes shook his head.
You dropped your head back to look at her over the back of the couch. “He thought he could bail me out of jail and we’d be best friends.”
“He really thought you needed bail money? ” She laughed as she came around to sit with you two. “And you. You were Mr. America before you were his pet psychopath.” She told Barnes. “Cap’s best friend.”
“She’s kind of awful now.” Barnes said to you.
“She was always kinda awful.” You mumbled while Sam refocused everyone.
“You guys shouldn’t be involved in this.” She said, as if she was warning you. “For your own safety.”
“We got a name.” You added, not leaving any room for discussion. Something about the way Sharon talked to you led you to hold suspicions. “Wilfred Nagel.”
“Nagel works for the Power Broker.” She explained.
“I can get your name cleared, Sharon. But we need your help.” Sam tried.
“I don’t buy that.”
“They cleared the bionic staring machine and he killed almost everyone he met.”
“I heard that.” Barnes said, which drew a small laugh from you.
“I don’t trust charity.” Sharon countered.
“Let’s call it a deal then.” Sam offered.
“Fine.” She shook Sam’s hand. “Lay low. Enjoy the party. And stay out of trouble.”
“I do like a good party.” You smiled as you stood. You held a hand out to Barnes, who groaned before pushing himself up.
He held an arm out to you but before you took it, you turned to face him straight on. You casually adjusted his suit jacket before your hands moved across his chest. Your hands went to his neck while he watched your hands carefully. You slid both pointer fingers under the collar of his shirt and he tensed slightly. You pulled his chain out and held it with one hand and used the other to release your bracelet. You fit the metal cuff back to its rightful place on your wrist with a proud smile.
“Didn’t give anything away that time, did I, James?” You said quietly, shooting him a quick wink.
“Shall we?” You asked happily, turning to face Zemo and Sam.
Even though you had a point in being in Madripoor and it definitely wasn’t a party, you were excited for the party. It would be nice to relax, not feel any guilt over your father. Any grief over Nat. Any anger at John Walker. And stress about being an Avenger. You could just be a twenty one year old kid and have fun for the first time in what felt like ever.
You lost the boys in the crowd rather quickly. But it wasn’t a heavy thought in your mind to stay with them. What seemed to bounce around in your brain were your interactions with Barnes through the day. You couldn’t quite figure out if you were flirting with him intentionally or just habitually.
You brushed it off temporarily as your personality. You were a Stark after all. And Starks tend to flirt with anyone… Right?
Regardless, you weaved through the crowd and let yourself enjoy the party for a moment. You enjoyed the music, letting your body sway and spin with the vibrations. It was hard for you to tell where anyone was through the vibrations of the floor with the vibrations from the speakers, but you told yourself that wasn’t your problem. Barnes and Sam would be fine for a little while. You weren’t sure how long you had been dancing when you heard the boy beside you.
“I don’t think I’ve seen you around before.” A boy said from your side.
Turning, you were met by a very beautiful boy. He was a bit taller than you, dark brown curly hair that fell messily across his forehead. You couldn’t tell the color of his eyes, only that they were looking at you with admiration. You couldn’t help but smile at him.
“I’m just passing through.” You answered vaguely. Given your previous escapades through Madripoor, you wanted to be as discreet as you could until you were able to leave.
“You come with anyone?”
“Just a few friends..”
“No boyfriend?”
“A boyfriend?” You repeated with a laugh. “I wouldn’t say that.”
“Girlfriend?” He tried.
“No.” You laughed slightly. “I’ve been out of the dating game for a few years, actually.” You snapped your fingers to show what you meant.
“You’re too pretty to be at a party alone.” He shamelessly flirted.
“Well I’m not alone.” You corrected. “This is actually a friend’s party.”
“Your friends with the Power Broker?”
Before you could voice a response, a hand found your arm. You quickly looked over and saw Barnes at your side, only his eyes weren’t on you. They were on the new guy.
“I thought you didn’t have a boyfriend?” The boy said nervously.
“Come on, Sarge.” You chuckled, noticing the staring and tense shoulders resembled jealousy. But for Barnes, distrust and suspicion was a more likely reaction. “It was nice to meet you.” You told the kid before pushing Barnes to move.
You couldn’t help but wonder… If the party was the Power Broker’s, but Sharon was hosting like it was her party.. Could Sharon be the Power Broker? Or closer involved than she led you to believe at least?
The next morning, you were all walking through an old shipping yard. Sharon was smart enough to grab you a more practical outfit, a skinny fit pair of black pants and a fitted light blue long sleeve and better shoes. You followed Sharon’s lead to crate. While she stayed for lookout, your group of four went in.
You knocked with one hand and felt the vibrations change at the end. You nodded towards the back of the container so Zemo went to take a look and exposed a secret door.
Sam and Barnes went in first, you behind them, and Zemo behind you. The guys tried to get you to take a gun but you adamantly refused, telling them you were a terrible shot and you had weapons of your own. Sam tried talking to Nagel, but he tried to run instead. Instantly, Nagel froze when he saw Barnes.
“You know who he is, right?” You chuckled, something intimidating dancing in your words. It was something you normally didn’t hear in your voice. You usually weren’t the intimidating type but things were different…You were different. “There’s Baron Zemo and me… Well, you’ll see.”
“How about a counter proposal?” Nagel tried. You ignored Sharon’s warnings in your ear. “Make me a better offer and I’ll talk.”
“Your life isn’t enough?” Your brows raised as you challenged him. You nodded slightly before raising your hand. Your fingers lazily pointed straight up as you grabbed hold of Nagel’s blood. “You don’t know what I’m capable of, do you?”
“Maybe she’s the intimidating one.” Zemo said, an odd respect in his voice.
You forced Nagel to his knees while Sam kept his gun pointed at him. “I can manipulate air too… I wonder if I could pull it from your lungs since you refuse to talk.”
“Okay, okay!” Nagel broke and told you the whole story after you released him. You were getting good at your new blood trick, and that mildly worried you but you had to push it to the back of your mind. Parts of his story included Siberia, an American who you could only assume was Isaiah Bradley, the Snap, and the Power Broker.
You caught the name Donya Madani, committing it to memory. If she was someone Karli wanted to help, she was someone that could lead you to her.
“Is there any serum in this lab?” Barnes asked. When Nagel didn’t answer, he pressed the gun to the man’s temple.
“No!” He said quickly. “But would she-“ He gestured to you. “-be incredible with it.”
“Thanks, but that’s a question I don’t need answered.” You crossed your arms and leaned against the wall behind you.
“The pure power you hold..” He continued and let out a devious chuckle. “You’re not at all curious?”
“I’m not the kind of person who deserves it.. Trust me. There’s probably as much blood on my hands as his.” You nodded to Barnes. “Just different motives.”
“Aren’t you tired of depending on them to help you? To save you?”
“I know my value. Anyone else’s opinion doesn’t really matter.”
The rest happened too fast to process in that moment. Sharon burst in. Zemo shot Nagel and that drew an interesting reaction from Sharon. And an explosion went off. Barnes had pulled you out of the way before you could get caught up in the blast.
Your head spun mildly from the quick movement and your ears rang violently. You tried to shake it off but that seemed to only make it worse. You felt a warm stream down the side of your head and realized a loose piece of shrapnel had sliced your forehead.
“You alright?” Barnes asked, helping you to your feet. “Y/N? Are you alright?”
“Yeah.. Yeah, I’m fine.” You nodded, mildly disoriented. Looking around, you saw the smoke gathering in the room. You put a hand above your head, using it to keep the smoke at the top of the room.
“Ah shit.” He muttered, pushing the loose hair out of your face. “You’re bleeding.”
“I’m fine.” You pushed his hand away. “We gotta go. These chemicals are going to go off any second and I doubt I can save us from that.”
You got Sharon to her feet while Barnes got Sam. Sam asked about Zemo, but that was the least of your concerns. You four had to get out of there before you were trapped.
You tried using your powers to move the shipping containers or pull a piece of the wall apart but it was too heavy to do in such a hectic environment. There was too much going on for you to really focus. Once you were out, the boys started arguing about whose fault it was.
“Not the time!” You shouted at them, your back against one of the fallen containers. “We’re blocked in and you three are out of bullets. So either I can try to handle this or we stay here and get caught. Either way, you need to zip it so one of us can come up with something.”
“Just use your pow-“ Barnes tried.
“I can’t do anything when you’re this loud!” You snapped. “Besides, the containers are too heavy. I’m not strong enough.”
You thought out loud to yourself. “I could try a concrete wall but I don’t know how long I can hold it if I’m worried about getting shot.” You chewed your lower lip in contemplation. “I’m too far to try the blood thing… They’re firing too many bullets for me to redirect back… What if I…”
It was so much easier when you had your dad to talk things out with. When you had someone smarter than you and could see a different angle, who could run the numbers and tell you your best chance, everything was so much easier.
“How are you going to handle it then?” Sharon challenged with an eye roll.
“You really don’t know a thing about me, do you?” You laughed in disbelief.
Before she could offer a rebuttal, there was another explosion. A smirk found its way to your face as you got an idea. You quickly hopped the barricade your group was stuck behind, despite the protests from Barnes and Sam. You slid under a hanging metal beam and popped up by the explosion. You shaped the flames away from you four and pushed it towards the people shooting at you. You used what was left as a wall to give you cover for you to get away.
“That’s how I’m going to handle it.” You said with your trademark Stark pride as you met back up with the group.
“You could've got yourself killed.” Sam reprimanded as you four had to duck into a separate container after a gunshot nicked your shoulder. Barnes launched a metal pole through one of the shooters’ shoulders like a javelin before shutting the door behind him.
“Okay.” You groaned, lighting a flame on two fingers. “That could've got me killed.” You ran the flame gingerly along the graze in an attempt to cauterize the wound and stop the bleeding.
“You’re an idiot.” Barnes grumbled.
“Who just saved your ass, huh?” You challenged as he opened the door when the shooting stopped.
“When are you gonna realize you’re not indestructible?”
“When are you gonna realize who you’re talking to?”
The heavy roar of an engine drew your attention and interrupted the sudden tension. The tension and attitude dissipated as soon as it came but you could tell it wasn’t going to be the last time that grievance was brought up.
“Supercharged.” Zemo said proudly as he pulled up in a sleek black car.
You let out a low whistle and nodded in approval. “She is a beaut.” You commented with an amused laugh. “Would it be wrong if I kept her after this?”
“You’re going back to jail.” Sam told him. “And you-“ He told you. “-aren’t keeping the car.”
“You’re no fun... Shut up and get in then.” You rolled your eyes. As Barnes climbed into the front seat, you went to the driver’s side - as if proving a point that you didn’t want to sit behind Barnes - and hopped over and into the backseat. “We still need him.”
Sam got in on the other side and after a quick conversation with Sharon, you were ready to go.
“You’re not gonna move your seat up, are you?” Sam asked.
“No.” Barnes said simply. You rolled your eyes at his childish antics. You leaned forward and tugged his sleeve to get his attention.
“Move your seat up.” You insisted.
“I’m not gonna move my seat.”
“Why not?”
“He didn’t move his seat for me so I’m not-“
“Solo tienes que mover el maldito asiento, Barnes.”
“No me voy a mover“
“Venga, muévete.”
“Por qué debería?“
“Cállate y mueve el maldito asiento. Hmm?” You patted his chest before leaning back. Barnes scoffed, but slid forward slightly.
“Okay…” Sam started, leaning closer to you to speak quietly. “What the hell was that?”
“I’m fluent in Spanish.” You shrugged as you leaned to the middle and spoke in the same hushed tone. “Dad taught me when I was eight-ish. I use it for fun or when I’m trying to prove a point, hence the conversation you just saw. Why?”
“Not that… That.” He gestured to you with one hand and to Barnes with the other. “You guys have been flirting since-“
“Nope.” You shook your head and sat back again. “I’m not talking about that.”
“But you were! Why else would he listen to you?”
“What are you guys talking about back there?” Barnes tried.
“It’s above your pay grade, Barnes.” You answered without thought. “Anyways, Sam.” You turned back to Sam. “I’m a Stark. If there was any flirting, it’s harmless. Starks flirt with everyone.” You shrugged innocently.
“Mhmm.” Sam said unconvinced. “If you guys end up together and-“
“If we end up together I’ll be just as shocked as you.” You laughed. “But it’s not gonna happen. I’m pretty sure he hates me, deep down. You saw how he snapped at me a few minutes ago.”
“So just right now and the other day before Walker showed up, right? That’s what you’re basing this on?” Sam asked, gesturing a small circle in reference to the current scenario. You pressed your lips together in a line while you nodded. “But didn’t he make sure you didn’t make it worse after you got arrested?”
“Sure but-“
“Before we ran into Sharon, he reached for you, right?”
“Okay but wait-“
“And he pulled you out of the way of that blast?”
“I see what you’re saying but-“
“And he only seems to get mad at you when you get yourself hurt!”
“It’s coincidental!” You reasoned quickly with your hands up in surrender. “If he’s gonna like anyone, I highly doubt it’s gonna be me. Wanna know why?”
“Enlighten me.” Sam laughed.
“Cause I push every button I can with him.” You explained. “I annoy him and I talk shit to him and I don’t listen to him. I purposefully see what I can get away with. I’m his annoying roommate/best friend.”
“Right… Because that gimmick never leads to anything…” He rolled his eyes in amusement. “Whatever you say, Mini Stark.” He chuckled.
On the flight back, Sam and Barnes sat opposite each other while they talked. You opted to lay on the ground between them after healing your shoulder and other small scrapes, wanting something flat to let your back relax. As soon as you laid down, you felt your spine pop and practically reposition itself.
Your mind wandered back to the same thoughts it kept coming back to, with the newest additions to your messy brain. Your dad, and if you were doing right by him. Steve, and if you lived up to his expectations. Nat, and how she’d be proud to see you utilizing the skills she taught you. The boy at the party, his unintentional implications of Sharon and the Power Broker. And Barnes… Sam’s suggestion that you were purposefully flirting with Barnes had made you rethink your last interactions with him.
There were comments slipped in here or there, sure. You had played a bit when you took your bracelet back, sure. But were you flirting? Did you.. Did you have a crush on Barnes? No, no it was all in good fun. You didn’t really know him. Why would you flirt with someone you didn’t know? Right?
“Maybe I should’ve destroyed it.” Sam said, which instantly caught your attention.
“That shield represents a lot of things to a lot of people, including me.” Barnes said quickly.
“Yeah, me too.” You agreed from the floor. “My grandfather made that shield… It holds a special place in my heart, kinda the only physical thing from Howard...”
“The world is upside down and needs a new Cap.” Barnes started.
“And it’s not gonna be Walker.” You added.
“Before you destroy it, I’m going to take it from him myself.” He finished.
“Count me in, Barnes.” You said, sitting up when Zemo came down the aisle. You moved to sit by the side of Barnes’ chair and looked up at him. “In it together?” You asked, holding up a fist.
“Together.” He smiled slightly as he gave you the fist bump you waited for.
“Thanks, by the way.” You added softly as Zemo muttered something. “For keeping this safe-“ You shook your wrist. “-and for getting me out the way of that blast. I could’ve died but you didn’t let me.”
“I told you I wouldn’t let you die, Y/N.” He nodded. “You trust me yet?”
“Hmm, getting there.” You pondered playfully. “You’re making good progress, but it depends on if you’re still mad at me.”
“Why would I be mad at you?” His eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“You yelled at me..” You realized how silly it was once you said it.
“You could've gotten hurt or even killed and I- I can’t have your blood on my hands too..”
“I know I’m not invincible…” You admitted heavily as you looked between Sam and Barnes. You knew Sam worried about you too, but he and Barnes had different ways of showing it. “I know I’m not Iron Man, but… But that’s the way I’ve always fought. It’s how I learned to fight. One time Steve told us ‘If you get hurt, hurt them back. And if you die, walk it off’.”
“Of course he did.” Barnes chuckled as Sam smiled fondly.
“It’s what I've always followed. So yeah, I’m a little reckless but I can heal myself so I never worried… But I guess I can try to be more strategic if it would make you guys feel better.” You offered with a small smile.
It was nice to know you had people watching your back, two people by your side that would seemingly burn down the world if it took you. You felt safer than you had with anyone since your dad.
“Why do you call him Barnes?” Zemo asked suddenly. “I thought you were all friends.”
“Wait. Does it bother you?” You wondered honestly, looking to Barnes.
“No, just a little different.” He answered with a small shrug.
“Dad always called him Barnes. Not James, or even Bucky. Guess I picked it up from him. I never really thought about it, in all honesty.” You shrugged.
“Yes, but that’s very business.” Zemo continued. “It’s so impersonal. If you two have a good relationship like you claim, or the type of relationship you two display… Shouldn’t you call him something more intimate?”
Using your powers, you plucked one of the ice cubes out of Zemo’s drink and flicked it towards his forehead. It smacked the center and left a wet square on his skin before plopping back in the cup. You smiled in amusement and looked to Barnes, who also enjoyed your little trick.
“Mind your business.” You chuckled, leaning your back against Barnes’ seat. You tilted your head back against the seat too, closing your eyes and letting out a sigh.
“Hey.” Barnes tapped a finger against your forehead. “Don’t sleep on the floor.”
“Stark?” Sam laughed from the other side of the aisle. “Get up, kid. There’s an open seat right here.”
“With the amount of times I’ve fallen asleep on the floor of my dad’s lab or in a desk chair leaning on a lab table or even on the lab table.” You laughed while you stayed in your spot. “This doesn’t bother me.”
“Get your ass up.” Barnes tried again.
“Too late!” You announced, dropping to the ground. “Good night.”
You woke up when you all landed. Even though you had napped on the floor, you didn’t wake feeling stiff or uncomfortable. You followed the boys out of the jet and through the Latvian streets.
It was a beautiful country, as many European countries were. Cobblestone streets that carried vibrations perfectly. Intricate stone buildings that were tall but not towering. Simple painted doors to break monotony.
“I don’t suppose any of you bothered visiting the memorial?” Zemo asked, referencing the memorial for Sokovia.
“I did..” You said softly, almost too quiet for anyone to hear.
“Did you?” Zemo was honestly surprised.
“After my dad’s funeral, when I moved out… There was a gap between leaving and moving in with Barnes. I didn’t know where else to go or who I was without Tony Stark. So I went to the memorial… It didn’t make anything clearer but it reminded me of a lot.”
“I’m sorry about your father.” Zemo said. You swore you heard sympathy playing in his voice. “He had his flaws but he was a good man.”
“Yeah, thanks, you and the rest of the world are sorry.” You said, somewhat bitterly. “He was the only permanent family I had. No one cared about me like he did.” You felt Sam and Barnes shoot you a look of confusion but you didn’t acknowledge it.
“What about the Avengers?”
“Yeah, they were great.” You shrugged slightly. “It just wasn’t quite the same. I was the most important thing to him, you know? Whenever I was feeling off, he was always there with something fun to distract me. Granted, that something fun was usually a new piece of tech he wanted to test, but it always worked to cheer me up. The world misses and mourns Iron Man, the CEO of Stark Industries and Earth’s best defender. No one other than me mourns my dad.” You explained as you noticed a change in Barnes’ demeanor.
“I’m gonna go for a walk.” He announced.
“You good?” Sam tried.
“Yeah. See you in a bit.” He nodded before taking off.
You lingered outside while Zemo went in. Sam turned in the doorway when he realized you hadn’t moved.
“Little Stark?” Sam asked. “You coming?”
“That was weird, wasn’t it?” You commented, pointing in the direction Barnes went.
“Yeah but he’s weird.” Sam chuckled. “You know that…. Oh! I see what this is.”
“It’s not that.” You shook your head with an annoyed sigh.
“That’s exactly what it is.”
“Seriously? He’s our friend.”
“You don’t see me chasing after him.” Sam shrugged. “He’s a grown man, Y/N. If he wants to brood and take a walk, let him.”
“You didn’t see it.. Something caught his attention and made him leave.”
“Well I don’t just stare at him so no, I didn’t see anything.”
“Nat taught me to constantly watch my surroundings. To keep my head on a swivel… He saw something I didn’t, but I saw him see it. I just don’t know what exactly he saw.”
“Just come inside.” He sighed. “You can interrogate him when he comes back.”
“ Or I just go check on him… Cause I’m grown too and don’t have to listen to you.” You said carefully, hurrying after Barnes. You heard protests from Sam but none made you turn.
You made it to the alley where Barnes turned. You knelt at the corner, feeling the ground and knocking your knuckles against the stone. You closed your eyes to focus, picturing Barnes and an incoming familiar figure. With an amused smile, you turned the corner.
“Ayo.” You said happily. “I didn’t think I’d see you here.”
“You followed me.” Barnes said, moderately annoyed.
“You made it easy enough.” You muttered before turning to the Dora.
“What brings you to Latvia?” You asked, already knowing the answer.
“Y/N.” She greeted respectfully. “I’m here for Zemo.”

SIN MIEDO (BUCKY BARNES) - TWO
Tumblr media
EPISODE TWO - THE STAR-SPANGLED MAN
//Tags: @calums-betch // Chapters will be about this long from here on out, maybe longer so enjoy! // SM masterlist
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Stark!Reader (platonic)
Word Count: 9,178
Warnings: Language, violence, blood mentions.
Summary: Back to Europe for a fight. After confronting Sam about the shield, you and Barnes found yourself part of a trio. Only issue - outside the Flag Smashers - was John Walker putting his nose where it didn’t belong.
A couple days later, the new “Captain America” was doing a TV interview at his old high school. His name was John Walker, and he was nothing more than a dancing monkey with something he didn’t earn.
“They’re treating him like a celebrity.” You commented as you and Bucky sat on his couch and watched the interview. “He pretty much just won a fucking talent show. He didn’t earn that shield.”
“Steve didn’t want this..” Bucky shook his head sadly. “We need to talk to Sam.”
“I can book a flight to New Orleans for later today.” You offered. “Private plane, of course… Being that I’m not sure if you’re on the TSA’s no-fly list…”
“This kid is a joke.” Bucky scoffed, turning off the TV before standing. He wasn’t leaving the room, or even leaving the area. He just needed something else to do other than watch Walker make a show out of a legacy Steve worked to build. “He acts like he knows who Steve was and what that shield means. He doesn’t.”
“No, he doesn’t.” You agreed, scrolling your phone to find the number for your family’s pilot. “So what are we going to do about it?”
“What can we do, Y/N? Sam gave it up and now it’s with that guy.”
“We go to Sam then.. You said it yourself, Barnes. We need to talk to him.”
“Just call him.”
“He’s dodging my calls. Have you tried?”
“I don’t call people.”
“Well I will make a call then. I’ll book my family’s pilot for this afternoon. Pack a bag… It’ll probably be more than a day trip.”
“Wait- Why would it be more than that?”
“Something sketchy is going on here… Why now? Why name a new Captain America now? I haven’t heard of any upcoming apocalypses, have you?”
He shook his head carefully, brows furrowed as he thought about what you said.
“I think Sam might know something that we don’t. And the only way to find out...”
“Is to go to him directly.. Alright, I’m convinced.”
The flight was quick, only Sam wasn’t home. He was at the Air Force base that he had been working with on and off since the battle with Thanos. You and Barnes received plenty of judgemental looks from those around you. Some made comments towards Barnes, asking if he was going to kill them too. A few tried to catcall you, to which you simply flipped them off and kept walking. A couple asked if Stark Industries would come back to weapons because since Tony was dead, the suits should be fair game. Instead of paying them any obvious attention, you spun your fingers at your side to create a small ball of air and by flicking your wrist, you hit them in the center of their chests to knock each and every one of them on their ass.
“Shouldn’t have given up the shield.” Barnes said as soon as he saw Sam.
“Nice to see you too, Buck.” Sam replied before catching sight of you. “Hey, Mini Stark.” He said with a laugh and a smile.
“How’s it going?” You smiled happily.
“How’d you get roped into old Grumpy’s crap?”
“Surprisingly voluntarily.” You joked. “But all jokes aside, Barnes is right.. Why’d you give it up?”
“This is wrong.” Barnes added.
“Woah, you’re Y/N Stark.” Sam’s friend said with wide eyes.
“Yeah hi.” You waved quickly. “I’ll sign an autograph or take a picture later. We need to borrow Sam.”
“Nah nah nah.” Sam shook his head and pushed past the two of you. “I’m working, all right? So your outrage is just going to have to wait.”
“You didn’t know that was gonna happen?” Barnes pestered as he followed Sam, motioning for you to come too.
“No! Of course I didn’t know that was gonna happen.” Sam replied, offended that Barnes would suggest something like that. “You really think it didn’t break my heart to see them march him out there and call him the new Captain America?”
“This isn’t what Steve wanted.”
“Oh my god.” Sam groaned.
“Barnes has a point.” You cut in when you caught up with them. “Steve gave you the shield, Sam. Not me, not Barnes. Not the government. He gave it to you… Why would you give that away?”
“What do you guys want me to do? Call the government, tell them I changed my mind?” He laughed to which you rolled your eyes and Barnes gave no response. “Yeah, this has been a great reunion.”
“You had no right to give up that shield.” Barnes said plainly.
“Alright, what you’re not going to do is come here in your overextended life and tell me about my rights.” Sam said quickly, turning to stand in front of Barnes and stop you both. “It’s done.. And I have bigger things to worry about.”
“Why did they name a new Captain America?” You cut in.
“Why would I know that?” Sam shrugged.
“You’re prepping for something, been tracking it for weeks too.” You commented as you pulled out one of the few Stark Industries tech pieces you kept around. You flicked your wrist to make what you were looking at hologram projections. “And I thought military security protocols would be difficult... Oh, that looks worrisome.” You tapped the video projection, showing a man with a black and red painted mask causing havoc on European streets. “What’s really going on here, Sam?”
“That guy has connections to rebel groups across Eastern and Central Europe… He’s strong. Too strong.” Sam explained.
“Like him strong?” You pointed to Barnes.
“Could be. He has ties to this online group called the Flag Smashers. Redwing traced them to a building outside of Munich so that’s where I’m going.”
“Well I don’t trust Redwing.” Barnes commented in a matter-of-fact tone.
“You barely even trust me, dude. Shut up.” You laughed. “Stark jet is right over there. Next stop Munich or what?”
“I don’t care if you don’t trust Redwing.” Sam told Barnes, ignoring your offer for the jet. “I’m going to see if he’s right because I’m pretty sure they’re part of the Big Three.”
“What the hell is the Big Three?” You asked in amusement with raised brows as Barnes asked “What Big Three?”
“The Big Three, you know.” Sam tried to explain without saying it, as if it should be obvious to you two. It wasn’t. “Androids, aliens, and wizards.”
“That is not a thing.” Barnes argued.
“It’s definitely a thing.” Sam countered.
“It’s not really a thing but it kinda makes sense.” You nodded slightly.
“Every time we fight, we’re fighting one of the three!” Sam reasoned.
“So who are you fighting now, Gandalf?” Barnes joked.
“The Grey or the White?” You added on with a chuckle.
“Wait, what do you know about Gandalf?” Sam questioned.
“I read The Hobbit when it first came out in 1937.” Barnes said proudly.
“He’s a nerd. We know this. Moving on. There’s no wizards?” You said, holding both your hands out as if to gesture to the world around you.
“Doctor Strange.” Sam countered.
“Is a sorcerer.” Barnes corrected as you added “Well my dad would call Strange a wizard.”
“Aha!” Sam exclaimed happily. “A sorcerer is just a wizard without a hat. Think about it-” while he spoke, Barnes' eyebrows furrowed as he processed Sam’s train of thought. “-I just came up with that. That’s crazy.”
“So these guys are magic?” You asked, bringing the conversation back to Sam’s Flag Smashers guy.
“No, they’re not magical. They use brute force, just like him.” Sam turned to face Barnes. “The incredibly annoying guy in front of me with a staring problem.”
“You think he stares or he just zones out?” You sidestepped to be next to Sam, facing Barnes. “I really don’t think there’s a lot of thoughts behind those eyes..”
“We’re coming with you.” Barnes said, unamused by your jokes.
“No you’re not.” Sam corrected as he began walking away.
Instead of arguing, you and Barnes simply followed Sam to his plane. Sam and Barnes sat opposite of each other, staring each other down the entire flight. You sat yourself on top of some crates, not bothering for a seatbelt. The ride was a bit rough, but by using your powers to manipulate the air around you, you kept your balance.
“One minute to drop, Sam.” Sam’s Air Force buddy said as he walked by. You still hadn’t caught his name.
“What’s the plan?” You asked, fitting the ear piece to your right ear as the boys put theirs in. “So no plan then.” You commented after a few moments of silence.
“How am I supposed to have a plan when I have two stowaways?” Sam said, gesturing to you and Barnes. “And you, Y/N. Why are you following his lead?”
“Our therapist said so.” You shrugged, hopping off the crates and tying your hair out of your face.
“Thirty seconds!”
“Enjoy the ride, Buck.” Sam commented as he began to head to the door of the plane.
“No, you can’t call me that.” Barnes argued.
“I don’t even call him that and we’re roommates.” You added as you followed them.
“Why not? Steve called you that.” Sam reasoned.
“Steve knew me longer. And Steve would have a plan.”
“I do have a plan… Just doesn’t involve you two.”
“Oh, so we’re freestyling?” You said excitedly. “You know, I always loved going off script.”
Sam jumped first, ignoring any other questions from you or Barnes. Barnes went next, having a small conversation with Sam’s friend. You went next, stopped momentarily by the boy.
“Wait, are you sure you’ll make it?” He tried.
“I’ve done worse.” You shrugged, stepping out of the plane into a small free fall. You gathered the air around you to create a current you could slide down like a skateboard sliding down a rail. It curved and dipped and rose to give yourself time to slow your momentum before reaching the ground. When you reached the ground, you found Barnes lying flat on his back.
“You jumped 200 feet through the trees and landed like this?” You teased. “Not much ‘super’ left in this soldier, is there?” You kicked at his side slightly, to which he smacked your foot away in annoyance.
“You know I got all of that camera, right?” Sam mocked over comms. “And Y/N, nice work with the little trick maneuvers.”
“Oh you have to send it to me.” You said almost instantly.
“Come on.” Sam instructed. “Head north.”
You helped a reluctant Barnes to his feet and began weaving through the trees. You let Barnes walk in front of you. Not because you needed him to protect you, just because the room between the trees was narrow and Barnes had already pushed himself to the front.
“Sam’s little friend hitting on you or what?” Barnes asked as you were reaching the clearing around the building Sam had you meet him at.
“Oh gross.” You shook your head. “We are not having this conversation.”
“Come on.” Barnes chuckled. “What are you holding out for? Live a little.”
“Wow. The old man goes on one date and he thinks he’s the love doctor… Let’s figure this out and I can live a little after.” You rolled your eyes.
While the boys watched the live feed Redwing transmitted, you moved around quietly. You knelt down in various spots, flattening one palm to the ground and tapping the knuckles of the other hand against the floor. You modelled the trick after your childhood show yet again, feeling the way the vibrations travelled through the earth. You could pinpoint yourself, Barnes, and Sam in that room. You also felt the trucks parked outside the building, opposite of how you all got into the building, and multiple people walking in and out the building in the same area. The only problem was that you were too far to really tell.
“I’ll see you inside… Or not.” Barnes told Sam before turning to you. “You coming, Kid?”
“I’m kidding, come on!” Sam tried with a smile.
“Yeah, I got it.” You shook your head with an amused sigh and hurried to catch Barnes.
“Look at you all stealthy.” Sam joked over comms. “Spend a little time in Wakanda and you come out White Panther.”
“It’s actually White Wolf.” Barnes corrected simply.
“Shut it.” You insisted quietly. “Alright, we’re in.. Close enough for now.”
You knelt behind some shelving, looking to count what you couldn’t before. Barnes made a comment about being ahead of Sam right before you felt his footsteps approach.
“Let’s go.” Barnes tried.
“No.” You held up your free hand while the other was pressed flat.
“I got a Vibranium arm. I can take them.” He defended.
“I can fly and she can control the elements. Who gives a shit? Wait.” Sam cut in. “We need to see where they’re going.”
“It’s two people.” Barnes argued.
“It’s more than two.” You corrected, knocking on the ground lightly.
“Let’s see what Redwing sees.” Sam said and judging from his tone, it was pointedly at Barnes.
“I’m getting five, at least.” You said, crossing your arms over an upraised knee, as Sam replied “You still only see two?”
After a small tussle, the boys end up nearly knocking things off the shelf. With a quick movement of your hands, you caught in on a small air ball and gently laid it to the ground. You all froze, hoping the cover behind the shelving would be enough. After a few seconds, you heard the trucks pulling out.
“There’s another in the truck. I think they have a hostage.” Sam said while looking at the screen on his wrist. Without a word, Barnes took off in a sprint after the trucks while Sam took flight soon after. With a sure step forward, you created a roll through the ground that carried you right up to the trucks. When you were close enough, your body moved to jump and the earth beneath you gave you an extra boost to get to the top of the truck before settling back.
Barnes jumped to the back of one of the trailers to open it, while you waited up top. Barnes was explaining what he was seeing while you looked around. You wondered why the second truck didn’t make a move to get Barnes off. The rear truck didn’t ram the lead or make any attempt to stop either of you.
You quickly realized it was a set up. Before you could get a warning out, you saw Barnes go flying into the rear truck. He was quickly yanked up and the one you assumed was the hostage in question was just as quick to jump trucks. You instantly made a small tornado between the trucks, jumped into it and allowed it to spin you to the fight. You landed as the “hostage” smashed Redwing over her knee, Sam flying in just moments after.
“So much for a hostage situation, huh?” You commented in annoyance as you began trading blows.
“Nice of you guys to join the fight!” Barnes yelled as he threw punches.
You tried to keep a safe distance between you and your opponent. You knew they were strong based on the way they had manhandled Barnes just moments before. You punctuated your punches and kicks with blasts of air, using your attacks to direct it. It didn’t make much impact as far as wearing them down, but it kept them off balance. Maybe you could knock them off the trailer completely.
You thought the three of you had it under control when you heard the clang of the metal and saw the disc fly past you. Suddenly, John Walker had joined the fight. Using your irritation of being in the same general area as the phony, you switched from air to fire. Flicking your hands open, you sparked flames in your palms and began throwing the fire. You were careful to not hit Sam or Barnes, but you weren’t exactly worried about Walker getting caught in the crossfire.
In the small lull, John tried to introduce himself. You talked over him to Sam, who you had just helped to his feet.
“We’re not gonna win this one.” You said between heavy breaths. “They’re too strong and we’re outnumbered.”
The action picked up quickly before anything else could be said. Between blows, Barnes was knocked off the trailer. You hurried to the edge, peering over to see he was able to catch himself but someone was quickly on their way down to finish it. You pulled the far end of the asphalt up in an effort to force the two trucks together and smash the man between the two.
You heard the whoosh of Sam’s wings and Barnes scream. You quickly slid to the opposing side to see the two rolling through the field of flowers on the side of the road. You let out a sigh of relief as you stood, ready to step off and make an air current to get you to the boys when you heard someone clear their throat behind you. You spun on your heel and saw the red headed girl and a large man standing behind you.
“I’m sure we’ll meet again soon.” You winked with a lazy two finger salute before falling back off the trailer. On your way down, you sent a quick bolt of lightning at their feet to knock them off balance so they didn’t have time to catch and grab you.
You turned mid air and gathered a quick ball of air that you balanced on and took you to where the guys stopped rolling. You hopped off your ball and sat in the field at their feet as they sat up.
“So.. Super soldiers.” You said, your eyes focused on the nearby highway. Your muscles were aching as you thought of the fight you just left.
“Yeah, I know.” Sam nodded carefully.
“I wanna know how… I thought Serbia was it.”
“Come on.” Sam said as he got to his feet. “Let’s get out of here and we’ll figure something out.”
You turned your torso to create a small tornado to get you to your feet. Barnes made his way up too and the three of you started the long walk down the hallway.
“Sorry about Redwing.” You told Sam to break the seemingly endless silence. “She didn’t even hesitate to smash him.. Kinda brutal if you ask me.”
“Yeah, but no one did.” Barnes cut in.
“Okay just cause you got your ass kicked by a girl-“ You began to argue.
“It has nothing to do with that!” Barnes said loudly.
“Oh it doesn’t? Okay. What’s your deal then?”
“There’s super soldiers out there, Y/N. Do you get that?”
“You think I don’t?” You laughed in annoyance. “My split lip, busted eyebrow, and cracked septum would beg to differ. I couldn’t even get close without worrying they’d kill me with one hit.”
“Hey!” Sam interjected, turning to stand in front of you both and stop your steps. “You’re not going to die, alright Mini Stark? I’m not gonna let that happen and neither is he.”
“You sure about that?” You challenged, shooting a side eyed glare at Barnes. “Cause I’m starting to think that he’d rather I die out here.”
“We’re back to this?” Barnes groaned. “Kid, I opened my apartment to you and let you crash on my couch so you wouldn’t be alone in some hotel. You want to know what this is?”
“Oh great. He goes to therapy for a little while and he thinks he can psychoanalyze me!”
“You’re just full of rage. And why are you full of rage? Because you’re full of grief. You’re using this as a distraction so you don’t have to deal with your dad’s death.”
“You don’t know shit, Barnes.” You warned, making fierce eye contact with Barnes. “I suggest you watch what you say next.”
You felt it in those moments. The dangerous potential your abilities held. In your anger, you happened to look down at your hand and noticed the feeling of your blood in your veins that stared back at you and how it moved like… Water. That moment scared you because you realized it was true. You could manipulate blood like water.
“Y/N?” You felt Sam’s hand on your shoulder, snapping your gaze up from your hand. “You okay?”
“Let’s keep moving. It’s a long walk back to Munich. The sooner we’re back, the sooner I can heal myself.” You said simply.
You let Sam and Barnes walk a few steps in front of you, your mind lost in a muddled sea of thoughts. Your mind bounced between thinking about what Barnes had said, that you were just angry. Part of that was true. You were angry over the recent losses you suffered. Nat had sacrificed herself to bring you back and you never got a chance to thank her or say goodbye. You weren’t even sure if you fully remembered the last conversation you had with her.
You were angry that the world demanded your dad’s sacrifice. He had to give his life to save millions. How was that fair? How did the cosmos decide that Tony Stark, your father, had to give up his life to undo what Thanos did years prior? Why did the weight of the world always seem to land on your father’s shoulders?
You were also angry about Steve. You missed him, definitely. But you were also disappointed in him. He abandoned his life and his friends here for an old flame. You couldn’t say if you would definitely do the same thing or not, but you thought it was relatively selfish what he did. Not only that, but his legacy was being handed out to the first blonde soldier the government saw. It was wrong and Steve wasn’t there to help stop it.
The rumbling of the engine pulled you from your own head and brought you back to the current moment. You heard Walker’s voice but didn’t really care to process or listen. Barnes turned around, seemingly to find you, and sighed slightly when he saw just how far back you were. He motioned for you to hurry and catch up, to which you simply nodded in response and slightly picked up your pace.
“Well then we gotta work together.” Walker reasoned.
“That’s not happening.” Barnes protested while you laughed.
“You think we’re going to work with you?” You mocked. “Let me ask you something. Would you have helped me if those guys had me pinned back there?”
“I know you don’t trust-” He tried to dance around your question.
“It’s a simple yes or no.” You cut in. “I wouldn’t hesitate to help Barnes or Sam because we’re a team and I trust them. Would you, John Walker, help me if they were going to kill me?” You challenged again.
“I think we would stand a much better chance if we all just-” He tried again.
“Just because you carry that shield, it doesn’t mean you’re Captain America.” Barnes cut in this time.
“I’ve done the work, okay?” Walker replied defensively. It was seemingly more to convince himself than your group.
“You ever jump on top of a grenade?”
“Yeah, actually I have. Four times.” He replied smugly. “It’s a thing I do with my helmet. It’s a reinforced helmet.”
“Steve did it without a helmet.” You replied in a singsong tone as you toyed with your nails to punctuate your disinterest.
“It’s twenty miles to the airport.” Walker said in annoyance. “You guys need a ride.”
You ended up following Sam into the truck. You would’ve just used your abilities to take you but twenty miles was a long stretch to maintain your power. You sat between Barnes and Sam. The lack of movement caused the fatigue to catch you, making it hard to keep your eyes open.
“You alright?” Barnes asked quietly while Walker tried to rally you guys on his side.
“Yeah.” You nodded, speaking the same hushed tone. “Just beat.. I’ll be fine when I can heal myself.”
“How you gonna do that?”
“I just need some water. It’s pretty cool actually.” You smiled slightly. “Sorry about snapping you back there.. You were kinda right after all.”
“Don’t worry about it.” He nudged you gently.
You put your eyes forward, leaning into Barnes. You felt him stiffen for a few seconds before relaxing again. He didn’t attempt to move you and you didn’t really have the energy to get up. You zoned out for a bit while Walker and Sam talked about the Flag Smashers.
“Do they always just stare like that?” Walker asked, your attention being caught when he pointed at you.
“You get used to it.” Sam said plainly, glancing at you for a second before chuckling. “She’s just been hanging out with him too much so she’s picking up his habits.”
“Point at me again and I’ll break your finger.” You said plainly. “It’s rude to point. Mama never taught you that?”
Walker’s friend, Lemar, jumped in and helped try to explain what was going on. You found yourself more willing to listen to him than Walker. Maybe it was his attitude. He seemed to be more grateful and respectful of his duty and the responsibility he held than Walker.
“So the GRC is handling resources… “ You said slowly as your brain was processing. “Why are you two here then?”
“We keep things stable.”
“Violent revolutionaries aren’t good for either side.” Walker added.
“Says the side with the resources.” You mumbled.
“I’m sorry. Wasn’t Tony Stark the CEO of the biggest weapons supplier in the world?” Walker turned on you.
“Say my dad’s name one more time.” You managed to put yourself in a sitting position as you felt the fire travelling up your spine. It bobbed and weaved it’s way through your muscle fibers until it burned under the skin of your fingers, begging for the small movement to bring it to life. “I dare you.”
“Tony Stark had Stark Industries providing weapons to terrorist groups and the US military for years. You shouldn’t be commenting on the side with resources given your family’s legacy.”
You pointed two fingers at Walker, letting the fire collect on those fingertips. You watched with a sly smile as he gripped the shield a little tighter and visibly gulped. You watched Lamar’s eyes widen slightly, adjusting in his seat.
“She did warn you.” Barnes shrugged.
“I am my family’s legacy.” You said proudly. “You make another comment on my father, or my family in general, and this little flame is going to get a lot bigger.” You mimicked a gunshot as you sent the small flame to whiz past Walker, lightly singeing the side of his hair and - hopefully - grazing his ear.
“If you three would join us-” He tried again, to which you simply rolled your eyes with a scoff.
“No.” Barnes said plainly.
“I got mad respect for all three of y’all.” Lemar tried. “But you were kinda getting your asses kicked till we showed up.”
“Who are you?” Barnes asked.
“She kicked your ass too.” You pointed out. “I saw you get thrown off the trailer.”
“You did too.” He countered.
“I jumped. There’s a difference.”
“Imma need a little more than Lemar Hoskins when a guy shows up dangling from a helicopter in tactical gear.” Sam redirected the conversation.
“Battlestar.. John’s partner.”
“Battlestar?” You tried to hide your laugh.
“Stop the car.” Barnes called. He had reached his limit.
“I get it, alright?” Walker called as Barnes climbed out. He waited a minute, holding a hand out to help you climb down. You didn’t hesitate to get out given that you were at your limit with John Walker as well. “You didn’t think the shield was going to end up here. I get it, Bucky!” He spoke more to Sam when he saw you and Barnes begin to walk away. “I’m not trying to be Steve. I’m not trying to replace Steve… I’m just trying to be the best Captain America I can be.”
“You’re not Captain America!” You yelled over your shoulder as he talked to Sam a bit more. “You’re a cheap knockoff! You’re not even a Wal-Mart version of Captain America. You’re a bootleg, gas station version.”
Sam finally caught up with you two as Walkers’ car took off. The rest of the walk was in fact long and tiring. Not much was said either as the three of you just wanted to get somewhere you could all rest.
On the plane, Sam laid out on one bench while Barnes sat on the crates. You sat on the floor between the two with a small crate of water in front of you. Dunking both hands, you let the water stick to your hands as you lifted them to your face. You held them in place one at a time, against the bridge of your nose first. Your ears perked up as Barnes broke the silence.
“Let’s take the shield, Sam.” He said lowly. “Let’s take the shield and do it ourselves.”
“We can just run up on the man, beat him up, and take it.” Sam reasoned.
“Technically we could.” You offered, half joking as you changed hands to your split lip. You scrunched your nose a couple times to see if it hurt so you knew if it was fully healed and it was. “We’re a super soldier, an element manipulator, and a guy in a bird costume. We could take him.”
“You guys remember what happened the last time we stole it?”
“Maybe.” Barnes answered.
“I’ll help you in case you forgot.” Sam started, partly annoyed but more so tired. “Sharon was branded an enemy of the state and Steve and I were on the run for two years… I don’t know about you two but I don’t wanna live the rest of my life la vida loca…”
“We got our asses kicked by super soldiers and came out with nothing.” You sighed as you moved on to your last wound on your eyebrow.
“Not entirely true.” Barnes said simply before hopping off the crate and moving to sit next to Sam. “There’s someone I think you should meet.”
The next day, you three ended up in Baltimore. You followed Barnes to a house in an older residential neighborhood. You could tell it was one of the neighborhoods that the City didn’t maintain. It reminded you of the neighborhood you lived in until your mom sent you to live with your dad when she got sick.
“Why do I get the feeling that we’re not gonna get a welcome wagon?” You commented with a sigh as you three approached the front door.
Barnes shrugged lightly before looking to Sam, as if to confirm he wanted to be there. After a small nod, Barnes knocked.
“We’re here to see Isaiah.” Barnes said when a kid opened the door.
“Nobody named Isaiah lives here.” The kid countered nervously.
“We just want to talk to him.” You tried gently.
“You must not hear what I just said.” The kid said with finality. “You ain’t getting in this house. Y’all can leave now.”
“Tell him the guy from the bar in Goyang is here.” Barnes said after a small hesitation. “He’s gonna know what that means.”
After a moment of contemplation, the kid closed the door.
“How do we know this guy?” You asked when you heard the door click.
“We had a little skirmish during the Korean War.” Barnes explained.
“You sure he’s gonna want to see you then?” You countered with a raised brow.
“It’s your lucky day.” The kid said as he opened the door again. “He said he wants to see for himself.” He stepped aside and let the three of you in.
The man stood from his chair on the other side of the room, eyeing Barnes and not really giving you or Sam a second glance. You stood between the boys, Sam staying back a few steps in hesitation.
“This is Sam, and Y/N. Y/N, Sam, this is Isaiah.” Barnes introduced you. “He was a hero.”
“Isaiah Bradley..” You mumbled, remembering one of the extremely classified SHIELD files you had hacked into years ago. The file was in pieces and it took you a week to put it back together. “One of the ones HYDRA feared most… Just like Steve.”
“We met in ‘51.” Barnes continued.
“If by met you mean I whooped your ass, then yeah.” Isaiah corrected to which you laughed while Sam remained straight faced.
“I like him.” You nodded with a wide smile. “How’d it go down?”
“Heard rumors he was on the peninsula but everyone they sent after him never came back.” Isaiah began, looking between you and Barnes. “So the US military dropped me behind the line to go deal with him. I took half that metal arm in that fight in Goyang but I see he’s managed to grow it back. I just wanted to see if he got the arm back or if he came to kill me.”
“I’m not a killer anymore.” Barnes said softly, regretfully almost.
“You think you can wake up one day and decide who you wanna be?” Isaiah countered.
“Mr. Bradley, if I may?” You tried, to which he simply nodded for you to continue. “I know how it sounds but my father was in a similar boat. Our company was providing resources to people all over the world, both good and bad. He thought it was the right thing, that he was protecting people.. But he was causing more harm than good. When he saw what was happening, he put the company and his family down a better path… Given the right motivation, people can change.”
“And who exactly is your father?”
“Tony Stark…”
“It may work that way for folks like you.“ He pointed at you slightly.
“Isaiah, the reason we’re here is there’s more of you and me out there.” Barnes redirected the conversation. “And we need to know how.”
“I’m not gonna talk about it anymore.” Isaiah said tensely as he launched a small tin can into the nearest wall. He came around the table to face Barnes, who made sure to position you behind him just in case. “You know what they did to me for being a hero? They put my ass in jail for 30 years. People running tests… Taking my blood, coming into my cell… Even your people weren’t done with me.”
“Isaiah..” Sam tried.
“Get out of my house!”
You grabbed each of their sleeves, tugging them towards the door as the boy came to lead you out. “Come on..” You said softly. “I’m sorry, Isaiah.” You said sincerely as you three were on your way out. “We never meant to upset anyone..” You told the boy, who simply nodded in response.
Sam stormed down the stairs to the streets so you two had to hustle to catch up to him.
“Will you slow down?” You called in annoyance.
“Why didn’t you tell me about Isaiah?” He asked angrily. “How could nobody bring him up?”
When neither of you answered, he pressed some more.
“Steve didn’t know about him?”
“No, he didn’t. I never told him.” Barnes replied coolly.
“So you’re telling me there was a black super soldier decades ago and nobody knew about it?”
The sirens interrupted your conversation. The cops pulled up next to you, two officers exiting the car.
“Hey. Is there a problem here?” One of the officers asked as he approached the three of you.
“No, we’re just talking.” Sam replied tensely.
“It’s fine. Get back in your car and go deal with an actual crime.” You replied, running a hand down your face in annoyance.
“Can I see some ID?” He asked Sam.
“Man, seriously?” Barnes questioned.
“Do you know who we are?” You scoffed.
“Okay, sir Just calm down.” The other officer tried, his hand seemingly drifting to his belt.
“I am calm. What do you want? We’re just talking.” Sam replied quickly.
“Just give him your ID.” Barnes said. “And then we can go.”
“No, don’t give them shit.” You cut in. “They don’t need it unless they’re putting you under arrest.”
“Is he bothering you folks?” They turned to you.
“Oh fuck off.” You waved him off. “Do you know who we are?”
“Hey.. These guys are Avengers.” The officer whispered to his partner.
“Oh my god. I am so sorry, Mr. Wilson.” The first officer said nervously. “I didn’t recognize you without the uh, the goggles. And Ms. Stark, I-“
Another cop car rolled up, drawing the other two officers away.
“This is such bullshit.” You mumbled as you ran a hand through your hair.
“I didn’t tell anybody because he had already been through enough.” Barnes explained.
“His file with SHIELD pretty much deleted itself as I opened it.. I didn’t know if he was real or not.” You added before the initial officers came back.
“Mr. Barnes, I’m sorry but there is a warrant out for your arrest.” He said regretfully.
“He’s been pardoned.” You shook your head, immensely tired of dealing with the police. “What are the charges?”
“He missed his court mandated therapy. It’s like missing a check in with your PO.”
“You missed an appointment with Raynor?” You turned on Barnes. “She’s gonna kill me too when she sees I’ve been with you the whole time.”
While the officers took Barnes into custody, you turned to Sam. “We can’t just let him go to jail.” You sighed. Sam simply shrugged so you turned and tried to stop the cops. “Hey, are the cuffs necessary?” You ask the officer, reaching for his wrist.
The other officer grabbed your arm instantly and spun  you away. He slammed your chest against the police car. You groaned at the impact while the officer yanked your arms behind your back.
“Y/N Stark, you are under arrest for obstruction of justice.” The officer said smugly, as if he was waiting for a reason to cuff you. He proceeded to read your Miranda rights as you complained.
“Is this really necessary?” You protested through clenched teeth. “Really? With the cuffs? You guys know I can just- Yeah, there we go.” You nodded in triumph as you used your powers to manipulate the metal of the cuffs so you could free one hand. You turned and held up both hands with a proud smile.
“Ah, okay okay. Again with the slamming?” You commented as your chest was slammed against the car again. This time they used the zip ties. “Haha, smart.”
“And resisting arrest.” The officer chuckled.
You were shoved roughly in the back of the police car with Barnes, leaving Sam alone in the street. You hoped he would come and get you two otherwise you would have to call Pepper, and you weren’t looking forward to that conversation. You two ended up at the police station, waiting in the cell.
“You ever hear the expression, do as I say and not as I do?” Barnes asked as you two waited for Sam to get you out.
“Hmm…” You pretended to think. “Not ringing any bells… Besides, following isn’t really a Stark trait. I’m more of a ‘just go for it’ type of kid.”
“Why did you get involved?” He sighed.
“Raynor is going to yell at me either way.” You shrugged, slumping back against the wall. “She might as well yell at me for actually sticking by you. Plus, you told me to live a little..”
“Sam, I’m Dr. Raynor, Y/N and James’ therapist.” Raynor spoke to Sam outside in the lobby.
“Thanks for getting them out.” Sam replied.
“That wasn’t me.” She countered.
“Hey, Christina!” They heard from down the hall. The annoyingly familiar voice caused Sam to stand and turn, seeing John Walker coming towards him.
“You know that guy?”
“Did some field ops back in the day.”
“When I heard you were working with Barnes, I thought I’d step in.” Walker explained. “Bucky isn’t going to follow that strict schedule anymore.” Walker continued.
“Our work isn’t done. Who authorized this?” Raynor asked quickly.
With a smug smile, Walker pointed to himself. Meanwhile, you and Barnes were being led back to the lobby. You saw Raynor talking to Sam with Walker beat by.
“They’re too valuable an asset to be locked up. So do whatever you have to do with them and then send them to me. Wilson, you too.. I’ll be outside.”
“Excuse me?” You scoffed, walking away from the people at the front desk to confront Walker.
“Here we go.” Barnes muttered, quickly following you.
“Assets?” You repeated as you stood face to face with Walker. “You’re fucking pathetic. If you think that getting us out of jail is going to-“
“Wait, why are you yelling at me?” He laughed in disbelief. “I just helped you out. It’s me, yknow, extending an olive branch. I- I don’t know what I did wrong.”
“You did it for leverage!” You shouted. “You did it so you could lord it over me like I owe you something! Well I don’t. I don’t owe you or anyone anything!”
“Y/N.” Barnes said from your side, grabbing your arm firmly. “Now's not the time. You really think threatening him in a police station is a smart move?”
You stared at Walker intensely when you noticed it. A vein on the side of his neck that strained as his jaw clenched. You remembered in that anger fueled moment that blood moves like water. Your fist clenched at your side as you focused in on the movement of the fluid in his body. After a few seconds of concentration, you managed to take control of his blood, forcing his muscles to tighten.
“What are you doing to me?” Walker asked in a strained voice, unable to resist your hold.
“How could I do anything? I just manipulate the elements.” You replied with faux innocence and a slight tilt of your head. You felt a tad unhinged in those moments, like you were losing yourself.
What you didn’t see was the look Barnes shot Sam. It was a look of worry. Not for Walker, he’d be fine. Barnes was worried about you. He remembered what you told him that first night you stayed on his couch and figured that’s what was happening.
“And there’s a darker potential I wonder about but I don’t know if I’d ever try it.”
“I know you’re scared of me…” You taunted Walker with a smirk. “You say I’m too eccentric…”
“Y/N! James!” Raynor’s firm voice came from behind you and snapped you from your instance of what felt like insanity. With your attention shifted, your grip on Walker was released. “Condition of your releases, a session. Both of you, right now. Let’s go.”
Barnes pulled you away as Walker regained control of himself. You grabbed Sam’s sleeve and pulled him with you two. You refused to look back, though something in your chest wanted you to turn around. You couldn’t place if it was guilt or curiosity, regret or a desire to try it again. Either way, you had to keep moving forward.
The three of you were sat across from Raynor in an interrogation room. The only thing separating you was a cold metal table and the chairs weren’t any better. Thin, cold aluminum that was no better quality than a folding chair.
“So.. Who would like to start?” Raynor began.
“I really don’t need to be here.. I’m 100% fine.” Sam replied.
“This is rather unprofessional, Raynor.” You said playfully, hoping to avoid the topic of your momentary lapse of control. “Barnes is the only one that’s a patient anymore. We shouldn’t be here.”
“It’s my job to make sure that you’re  okay.” She gestured between you and Barnes. “And so yeah, this may be slightly unprofessional, but it’s the only way I can see if you’re both getting over what’s eating at you.”
“This is ridiculous.” Sam sighed.
“Yeah, I agree.” Barnes added.
“You should be happy.” You said, sitting back in your cold metal chair. “You wanted me and Barnes to be friends, and now we are. We even got arrested together!”
“Cut the shit.” She told you, which made you put your hands up in surrender. “Again.. Who wants to go first?” When no one answered, she tried again. “Okay, we’ll try an exercise I use for couples… It’s called the miracle question. Do any of you know what that is?”
“Absolutely not.” Barnes shook his head as Sam said “Of course not.”
“It’s a hypothetical scenario.” You began, your head tilted to the ceiling as you spoke. “You pretend that a miracle happened while you were asleep, the kind that makes your life better. What’s the miracle you would want to see?” Your answer drew curious looks when you turned your attention to the group. “I took an advanced psychology class in college.”
“Well in my miracle, he would talk less.” Barnes took a jab at Sam.
“Exactly what I was going to say. How ironic.” Sam countered.
“I’ll give you a serious answer.” You shrugged. “Only way this is gonna end is if one of us actually tries. My family is back. My dad, Nat, Steve, even Vision. We’re at that damn lake house and I actually feel welcome somewhere..”
“Thank you, Y/N.” Raynor nodded. She turned her attention to the guys. “You two are leaving me no choice. It’s time for the soul-gazing exercise.”
“I like this better.” Barnes said sarcastically.
“Oh God.” Sam chuckled. “He’s gonna love this. This is right up your alley. You should really enjoy this.”
“Just shut up and face each other.” You groaned before they began rearranging their chairs to face each other. They continued to make stupid comments to each other while you toyed with your chair. You tried pulling off a piece of it with your powers. When it finally came off, you toyed with it, making it take different shapes and do different tricks in your palm.
“You need to look each other in the eyes.” Raynor directed. “See? That wasn’t so hard…. Wait, what are you guys doing?”
“They turned it into a staring contest.” You commented, not looking up from your new toy. “Just blink, oh my god!” You said loudly, looking up to kick at their interlocked chair legs. “You guys are so childish.” You chuckled, weaving the metal between your fingers.
“James, why does Sam aggravate you?” Raynor tried again. “And don’t say something childish.”
Barnes paused in contemplation, thinking of how he wanted to answer. He looked to you, to which you simply shrugged and gestured for him to answer. While you wanted to avoid interacting with John Walker, you didn’t exactly care to be in that room much longer.
“Why'd you give up the shield?” He asked finally. You had to keep from rolling your eyes. You thought he had moved past it. Sam gave a similar reaction.
“Why are you making such a big deal out of something that has nothing to do with you?” Sam asked tightly.
You leaned forward to rest your elbows on your knees. Now you were interested.
“Steve believed in you.. He trusted you. He gave you that shield for a reason.” Barnes began. Once he started talking, it was like an open faucet. “That shield, that is… That is everything he stood for. That is his legacy. He gave you that shield and you threw it away like it was nothing.”
“Ouch.” You whispered.
“Shut up.” Sam said flatly.
“So maybe he was wrong about you.”
“Barnes, that’s enough.” You tried.
“And if he was wrong about you then he was wrong about me!”
“Oh please!” You groaned, throwing the metal you were toying with into the nearby wall with a satisfying splat. “If there is anyone in this room Steve was right about, it’s you, Barnes. Not Sam, not me. You.”
“This is good..” Raynor nodded, gesturing for you to continue. “Y/N, what do you mean? You think he was wrong about you?”
“Did you see what I did to Walker?” You laughed in disbelief. “Of course he was wrong about me. Steve thought I was this- this- this great kid with untapped potential! He thought I could follow my dad’s footsteps and lead the next generation of Avengers and be better than they ever were… And here I am, getting arrested in Baltimore and misusing my powers!”
“Barnes, Steve knew you better than we know you and better than he knew us.” You shifted in your seat to face your friend. “He always knew who you were. Even when you were sent to kill him, he knew who you were. Steve might’ve been wrong about me and Sam might’ve been wrong for giving up the shield, but Steve wasn’t wrong about you.. Look at you! You’ve gone through your- your little journal and tried making amends… You’re friends with me for crying out loud. He wasn’t wrong about you..”
“Let’s keep this going.” Raynor pushed. “So if Steve was wrong about you, who was right, Y/N?”
You paused in thought, knowing there was only one possible answer. “My dad… He always knew I was different. Not just in my powers, but me. I was never perfectly good or perfectly evil. I was both… And he knew that. But- but it didn’t stop him from believing I would find who I was meant to be..”
“And who were you meant to be?”
“His legacy..”
A lull in your breakthrough allowed Sam to speak up.
“Maybe this is something you or Steve will never understand.” Sam said carefully. “But can you accept that I did what I thought was right? … We don’t have time for this, Doc. We got some real serious shit going on. So how about this. We squash this, go deal with that, and then we go on separate long vacations and we never see each other again.”
“I like that.” Barnes agreed.
“I don’t.” You countered, which was ignored.
“Great.” Sam said with fake enthusiasm. “I’ll see you two outside.”
“What’s wrong?” You asked Barnes as he stood. You followed suit, sidestepping to block his path. “I’ve seen that look.”
“What was rule number two?” He turned around to ask Raynor.
“Don’t hurt anyone.” She replied.
“Looks like that’ll be my job then.” You nodded. “Thanks, Raynor.”
“Y/N?” She tried before you followed Barnes out the room. “You don’t have to live up to anyone’s expectations other than your own… You and Barnes, you both could be-“
“-Very impactful on the other.” You cut in. “I know… I’m trying to be this- this- this role model for him.” You laughed without humor. “But I can’t be that shimmering beacon of hope when I’m trying to figure out my own shit.”
“I’m not asking you to be perfect.. Neither is James.” She countered. “I’m asking you to be the person you know you are, not the one everyone else thinks - or thought - you are.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.” You said with a tight smile as you exited the room and soon after, the building.
You found the boys talking to Walker and his friend right outside the building. Raynor’s words bounced around in your brain, mixing with the words and arguments you’d had with Barnes over the last few days. It was odd, knowing that you could be read so easily. A vulnerability you had no control over. You couldn’t hide, not from yourself and seemingly not from Barnes. It sent a chill down your spine to know someone who you hardly knew - but you were making an effort to know - saw through you almost instantly.
“Well good thing I have 20/20 vision then.” You heard Walker brag as you approached. “Y/N! Nice of you to join us. And hey, no hard feelings. I know you were just-“
His words were cut off by a swift right hook to his jaw. You groaned slightly as the impact sent a sharp sensation up your bones. You quickly realized you made solid contact between his jaw and your knuckles.
“If you ever patronize or disrespect me like that again.” You threatened. “What I did to you back there, I will do it again but a hundred times worse. Do I make myself clear?”
“Are you threatening me!?” He asked in shock.
“A threat implies I won’t do it.” You chuckled. “And I think we both know I will… And we’re not a team. My team is right here.” You held your arms to your side, gesturing to Sam and Barnes.
“So where is she now, Walker?” Barnes asked, leaning an arm on your shoulder like an armrest. “Do you know?”
“No, we don’t know, Bucky.” He answered quickly. “It’s only a matter of time until we find out.”
“Things are really intense for you, aren’t they, Walker?” Barnes mocked from your side.
“Both of you take it easy.” Sam stepped in. “Walker’s right. It’s imperative that we find them and stop them. But you guys-“ He turned to Walker and Lamar. “-have all sorts of authorizations you have to get. We’re free agents, more flexible. It just wouldn’t make sense for us to work with you.”
“A word of advice then… Stay the hell out of my way.” Walker said, a mild threat lingering in the distance.
“Oh, I’m so scared.” You mocked before blowing a raspberry in his direction.
The boys walked away before you did. You took your first few steps backwards, facing Walker so you could flip him off with both hands and a very honest smile. You mouthed the words ‘Bye bye, bitch boy.’ You spun on your heel and hurried to catch the boys, taking the empty space between them.
“You really need to stop instigating.” Barnes laughed lightly as you caught up.
“Well you’re no fun.” You joked. “Don’t worry. I know when enough is enough… And it’s not yet. Not until Walker learns some respect.”
“What are you guys thinking?” Sam asked plainly.
“I know what we have to do. When Isaiah said ‘my people’, he meant HYDRA…” Barnes began.
“Please tell me you’re not going with this where I think you are.” You groaned in protest.
“Not a chance.” Sam said simply.
“He knows all of HYDRA’s secrets… Remember, Siberia?”
“You’re really going to just go and sit in a room with this guy? Remember what happened last time?” You challenged.
“Walker doesn’t have any leads.” Barnes reasoned.
“Alright.” Sam agreed. “Let’s go see Zemo.”
“Why do I feel like this will come back to get us?” You sighed but nodded. “Let’s do it.”

SIN MIEDO - BUCKY BARNES (FOUR)
Tumblr media
EPISODE FOUR: DELETED SCENE
Series tags: @calums-betch // SM masterlist //
Word Count: 1,265
Pairing: Stark!Reader x Bucky Barnes
Summary: The mission was getting messier but Y/N yearned for simplicity. For family. But diving into the past broke her worse than she expected.
You quietly shut the door to the bedroom behind you, slipping away while Zemo talked to Sam about the serum. You contemplated locking it but didn’t worry about it. The boys generally gave you your privacy more often than not. Crossing the room, you sat on the bed with your phone in your hand.
You didn’t think you’d do it anymore. You thought that was the last time you needed to. But something in your chest needed to hear it. You weren’t sure what it was, but almost getting through to Karli… It reminded you of who your dad saw you to be, the kind girl who had a heart as big as her bank account. The girl who preferred conversation to confrontation, but wouldn’t back down from a fight.
But now you weren’t so sure who you were. Some days you felt normal, comfortable in your own skin. And other days you felt like you were wearing a costume, like Y/N Stark was a character that you were playing.
Your phone was the time capsule of your relationship with your dad. All your photos and videos were there, locked in a special album. Your text conversation was still there. His contact and old voicemails were still there. And the only piece of Stark tech you kept with you was home to a couple hologram messages, even the last message before his time traveling. It was intended for you, Morgan, and Pepper, but you had edited it to only save the part that was talking to you.
You unlocked your cell and opened your voicemails first. You had five locked messages from years ago. All five were from your dad while you were dusted. With a tight feeling and shaky hands, you played each of them in order.
“Hey Y/N.” Your dad's voice came through. Instantly, the tears came. “I wish I had better news for you… I got back to Earth, with the help of some blonde glowing space-lady. Part of me hoped that when I got back, that you’d be here waiting for me… I gotta say that I would’ve been alright not coming back without you. Oh man, I just- I miss you, Mini Me. I love you to the stars. And this is the part where you say ‘Around the moon and back’.. It shouldn’t have been you..”
“Y/N!” He sounded happy. “Oh, kid.. Where do I begin? It’s too quiet without you around. I hate it. But it uh- it won’t be quiet for too much longer because, well, you are getting a sibling! Yeah, Pepper’s pregnant so that’s fun. Kinda makes me think about your mom and what she went through… I really was a crap dad in the beginning, huh? Well I hope I made up for that… As long as I did right by you, I did my job. It’s just- It’s not gonna be the same… I remember-“ He laughed and it made your heart twist. “-having to chase you around with a fire extinguisher. And when you started with your- oh what did you call them? Your air scooters? Oh my god! No matter what… I love you, Y/N/N. To the stars, around the moon, and back.”
You only got through two before your heart shattered again in your chest. You held your phone tightly with one hand and covered your mouth with the other. You sobbed heavily but you tried to contain the noise. You didn’t want the boys to hear. Your breath hitched as you tried to calm yourself but nothing seemed to do it while the small wheezes came out, muffled by your hand.
You wanted to throw your phone, to throw the pillows off the bed and put a fist through the wall. You hated the universe for taking the only thing you cared about. You wanted to burn yourself to ash and rebuild someone new. You were tired of that lonely feeling.
“Hey, you in here?” Barnes asked as he walked in. You looked up from your lap with red, puffy eyes and tears streaming down your face. You took the collar of your shirt and tried to clear your face in hopes Barnes hadn’t noticed. You cleared your throat and offered him an obviously fake smile while your eyes still glistened.
Barnes crossed the room and knelt in front of you. Gently, he took the phone from your hands and glanced at the screen. He saw the name IRON DAD✨and sighed softly. He placed the phone on the nightstand and looked back to you.
“It should’ve been me.” You said quietly. You couldn’t speak above a whisper out of fear that you would break. You couldn’t lift your eyes from your hands either. “He told me- He told me there was only one way. He told me there was one way and I- I didn’t listen. It- I should’ve done it. I should’ve saved him.”
“Hey, hey, hey.” He tried, gently putting a hand over yours, stopping your mindless fidgeting. “It wasn’t your fault.”
“I didn’t- I didn’t do anything!” You cried. “I- I didn’t- I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!”
“You did everything you could.” He tried, giving your hand a reassuring squeeze.
“Maybe I could’ve healed him. I could’ve- It could’ve been enough to get him to a- a- a hospital or something. I- I just- I just froze and stood there. I-“
“Stop.” He interrupted gently. “It’s not your fault.”
You dropped off the bed to your knees in front of Barnes. You fell against him, wrapping your arms around him as you cried. You kept your sobs silent as they shook your chest and shoulders. Your eyes were tightly closed but nothing could stop the tears from falling.
Barnes hesitantly put his arms around you in return, rubbing your back and muttering that it was okay. He wasn’t sure why you broke or why you threw yourself into his arms. His heart broke for you in those moments, to see you so vulnerable. So young and alone...
He knew you were only human, that you had emotions and grief and pain. But to see it so clear on your face and in your body language, to hear it in your voice. You had always presented yourself with grace, with power and control. Watching you fall apart in his arms.. Barnes had only felt truly powerless a few times, but he knew that was probably the most useless he had ever been.
“Then why does it feel like it is?” You asked weakly. Your voice sounded so small, so young. “Like I could’ve at least tried something.”
“We all did everything we could.”
“But I-“
“You’re gonna drive yourself crazy if you keep thinking about what you could’ve done… ‘What if’ isn’t going to change what is, no matter how bad we want it to…”
“All this power and it wasn’t enough…” You pulled away and wiped your eyes to see his expression. His face was as open and gentle as you’d ever seen it. His eyes were never more kind than they were in that moment “Buck, if you had a kid like me, would you be proud? If they could do the things I can and have lived the way I have..”
“Yeah..” He nodded with a gentle smile. “I’d be proud of them. Y/N, your dad wouldn’t have done what he did if he didn’t know you’d be alright when he was gone… You’re so much stronger than you realize. He’s proud of you and so are we.”

SIN MIEDO (BUCKY BARNES) - ONE
Tumblr media
EPISODE ONE - NEW WORLD ORDER
series tags: none yet // SM masterlist
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Stark!Reader (platonic)
Word Count: 4,460
Summary: Y/N Stark has just lost her dad and two of the people closest to her in Natasha and Steve. Unable to be around the unknown face of her sister, she leaves and ends up crashing with an unexpected new friend.
Life without your dad was… unexpected, unnatural even. Sure, kids outlive their parents, but it was never something someone is prepared for. Being gone for years and coming back to an all out brawl was never something you thought would be part of your life, but it made sense as an Avenger. The fight seemed to last only moments, any memory of it blurring quickly after the dust had settled. But watching your dad die, that was etched into your mind like a brand. The vivid colors of the Stones’ energies shined at the edges of your vision when your eyes closed.
It played back at night, when you were trying to sleep. You heard his voice, laughing and telling jokes. You saw his face in everything, not counting the murals and tributes on every building. The documentaries on Stark Industries or on Iron Man seemed to play on every channel. The memory of your father haunted you and you didn’t know it was going to motivate you or destroy you. The world missed Tony Stark - maybe they just missed Iron Man- but no one missed him as much as you did. Not Happy. Not Peter. Not even Pepper or Morgan.
It was almost immediately after the funeral, maybe two or three days later, that you broke the news to Pepper that you were moving away. You knew it wasn’t what she would want but it was your life. It was your mental health at stake. No one in that lake house could help you, so you had to find a path on your own.
“What about your sister, hmm?” She tried to counter. “Morgan needs you.”
“Half-sister.” You corrected as you moved around your room, packing the belongings you were taking immediately. Pepper wasn’t your biological mother, but Tony was definitely your biological dad. “Besides, she doesn’t need me. She doesn’t even know me. You guys had her when I was dust, so I don’t really have any connection with her other than Dad, and he’s gone now so… There’s just nothing for me at this lake house, Pepper. I’m sorry.”
“Your dad wouldn’t want this.. He really wanted you two to get along. Before everything, Tony said-”
“Dad’s not here!” You snapped, slamming the book in your hand on your bedside table. “I’m here instead and I won’t stay here! I just can’t…Everything reminds me of him. How am I supposed to live like this?”
“Where are you going to go, Y/N?” She sighed tiredly. She knew she wouldn’t win this fight. “You were gone for years. You have no credit history to rent anything.. It’s best if you stay here for a little while longer.”
“I’m still a Stark. I can get anything in the world with a little smooth talk and a smile.”
“What about Stark Industries?” She challenged calmly. “You are Tony’s successor.”
“You’re still acting CEO.” You replied with a tired shrug. “You may think I haven’t thought about this but it’s been on my mind for days.. Without Dad to actually teach me how to run this damn company, I don’t know when or if I’ll be ready to do that. Until I know for sure, Dad trusted you to bridge the gap between his reign and mine. Just keep it for a while and I’ll let you know when I have a real path. Please?”
She nodded before a gentle smile. “Okay… Look, there’s a therapist I want you to see for a little bit. She can help you before you do something insane…” She offered
“Thanks but I don’t need therapy.” You scoffed.
“You do need to talk. And you won’t talk to me, which is fair. Just see her a couple times and if it doesn’t work, you don’t have to go anymore… I’ll pay for it.”
“Fine.” You nodded slightly. “I’ll do three sessions, how’s that? One every four days or something like that?”
“Thank you, Y/N.. I’m just looking out for you.”
“Yeah, I know… Thanks Pepper, for everything. I really do appreciate it.”
“Good luck, honey.”
Now almost two weeks after you left, you entered Dr. Raynor’s office for the third and likely final time. You checked in with her secretary, who told you to knock and see if she was done with her current client. The door was cracked so you tapped your knuckles against it a couple times before poking your head in.
“I didn’t have a moment to deal with anything, you know? I had a little-” You heard Bucky say before stopping suddenly due to your knocks.
“Oh shit. Sorry.. At the front, they told me to see if you were done. Hey Barnes.” You said, offering Bucky a small wave.
“Hey, Y/N. I didn’t know you came to therapy.” Bucky said, furrowing his brows and tilting his head slightly in question.
“Yeah, uh funny story actually. Pepper wanted me to come a couple times before I head out on my own. Make sure I don’t implode, I guess.” You shrugged casually.
“You two know each other? Oh, this is perfect. Come on in, Y/N. The comfort of someone trusted should help you both open up.” Dr. Raynor insisted.
“I wouldn’t really say I trust him.” You sighed as you sat on the couch, as far from Bucky as you could get while Bucky scoffed at the comment. “He kinda killed my grandparents..”
“I tried apologizing for that.” He said with a slight eye roll as he crossed his arms.
“Yeah, I don’t think ‘It was the Winter Soldier, not me’ and then beating the shit out of my dad for being pissed about it counts as an apology.” You laughed bitterly. “Unless that’s how HYDR-”
“Okay, moving on.” Raynor interjected. “Y/N, have you been doing the journaling when you wake up?”
“No because almost every night is the same.”
“What nightmares could you possibly have?” Bucky asked, his eyes fixed on the ceiling as if praying for a way out.
“I kinda watched my dad die in front of me and that tends to be traumatic. Not all of us have a murderous past for nightmares to stem from, but that doesn’t mean-”
“Okay, I’m not going to sit here and be ridiculed by a kid.” Bucky interrupted, standing and pointing at you. While he spoke his sentence, you complained, “Why are neither of you letting me talk?”
“You know what, fine by me.” You laughed in annoyance. “I’ll talk my shit whether you’re here to hear it or not.”
“What’s with all the tension? You’re both done fighting, right?” She asked simply. “James, you have your mind back. You’re free. Y/N, your reason to fight is gone. What do you two want?”
“Peace.” Bucky answered after a few moments of silence.
“That is utter bullshit.” Dr. Raynor countered, which earned a chuckle from you. “Y/N, what about you?”
“I just want my dad back, but that can’t happen… So I guess I want purpose again.”
“Fighting isn’t a purpose, kid.” Bucky said, shaking his head slightly. Almost as if he was disappointed.. “It’s just something to do.”
“Maybe I want a reason to get off my ass. Without my dad, without Iron Man… What do I have?”
“Freedom..”
“You’re both free.” Dr. Raynor added. “James, you’re good for today. See you next time.”
“See ya.” He nodded. “Catch you around, Stark.”
“Eh maybe.” You shrugged. “If the stars align in such a way.”
Bucky chuckled slightly on his way out, leaving you and Dr. Raynor to finish your session.
“So... I’m told you’re not scheduled for anything after this.” She began.
“No, I’m not.” You shook your head. “Pepper wanted me to do this and I agreed to three sessions.. I don’t need therapy.”
“So none of this has helped?”
“Not in any noticeable way..”
“You know, James thought the same thing at first.”
“Oh my god.” You sighed. “First off, don’t compare me to Barnes, please. We’re not the same. Second, constantly readdressing that my dad is dead doesn’t need to happen in some office. The murals on the street remind me every day. The magazine articles in every newsstand and the journalists calling me every day remind me enough. I don’t need to talk things out. I need to process everything in my own way.”
She looked at you for a moment before making notes on her pad of paper.
“You mentioned your grandparents.. Could it be that the sudden loss of your father is bringing to the surface old grief you never processed? Maybe now knowing that it wasn’t just a car accident after all…”
“I never knew them.” You countered defensively. “How could I grieve for them? It’s like leaving Morgan. I never knew her because she was born when I was gone. Why would I miss her? It’s like they never existed. Just a name with no face and no real connection.”
“Interesting..” She nodded as she wrote some more.
“I really hate when you do that.”
“You may not want to hear this, but you and James do have a lot of similarities.”
“Please, never say that again.”
“Y/N, you two both-”
“LA LA LA LA LA!” You sang, covering your ears with both hands. “I’m not hearing this!”
“Why are you so against being compared to him?”
“Because… We’re just not the same.”
“Two people with extraordinary abilities, a troubled mind, and no sense of self… Yes, you two are so different.”
“I didn’t appreciate that. That’s very unprofessional, Raynor. It hurts my feelings, actually. I thought I was supposed to get better with therapy, not worse. Wow, I think I’m going to cry.. You bully Barnes like this too?”
“I have an idea..”
“Oh, I’m probably not going to like it, am I?”
“Look. You’re young. Twenty one, right?” You nodded so she continued. “You were gone for five years. You have your family money, but no life experience.”
“What are you getting at, Raynor?”
“You’re alone right now. Your dad is gone, may he rest in peace.. You don’t connect with your sister.”
“Half sister.” You mumbled.
“You love Pepper, but she doesn’t quite fill that family slot. Not the way Tony did. Where will you go?”
“What’s your point?”
“Go with James.”
“Absolutely not.”
“And why not?”
“He hates me.” You laughed.
“I think you two would be really good friends if you gave each other the chance. You could bring out better sides to each other.”
“Okay, are you being my therapist right now or trying to play matchmaker?”
“You’re both alone and trapped in your own personal hells. You can support each other in a platonic way until you figure your lives out.”
“And if I’d rather be alone?”
“I’ve had a lot of clients over the years, sweetie. And no one, no matter what façade they put up. No matter how they act or what they say, not one of them actually wanted to be alone… It’s what they defaulted to because they thought no one understood them. They thought no one could help them.”
You were silent for a moment, processing her words. You didn’t really hate Bucky for anything in particular. In fact, prior to the Snap, you had no issue with the man. He had gotten between the Avengers unintentionally, but at the time, you weren’t one to hold grudges. It wasn’t him who wanted to tear your team apart. You did hold some resentment for killing your grandparents, but that’s because it was your family. Family was all you ever had, both found family and blood family.
“Nobody understood you quite like your father, right?” She asked gently.
“Everyone always said we were the same person… That I was a mini-Tony.” You smiled softly. “Steve said that I had the same enthusiasm that Howard did when he knew him. My dad, that Stark legacy and personality, it’s who I am. And the person I owe it to sacrificed himself to save me and billions of others… Who else could understand that?”
“How do you know if you won’t give anyone the chance?”
“You really think old man Barnes and I could get along?” You asked, your eyes trained on your lap as you thought.
“I really do.” She said gently, consoling almost. “Some friendships are found in the oddest places.”
“Y’know my dad.. He used to laugh at how I could make friends with anyone. I was good friends with Spiderman too almost instantly. And Steve, he was like a big brother. Nat too, she taught me how to fight and how to not take shit from anyone. She was the sister I always wanted.. Oh and Wanda. One time we stayed up all night and went swimming in the lap pool at like three in the morning. It was great until Vision snitched on us.” You had started smiling during your story without realizing. “I don’t know what she’s up to, but I really hope she’s doing okay with everything..”
“Is it really so far-fetched to be friends with James, then?”
“I don’t know..” You sighed. “But I’ve lost so much. Vision, Nat, Steve, Dad… Even my mom, and I never even knew her… I can give it a shot, I guess. Might as well try to build something from the rubble, right?”
“I think it’ll be stronger than you think. And your father would be proud of you for taking the first step in trust..” She smiled when you finally lifted your eyes. “I can’t give you any of his personal information, but I know where he likes to go for lunch after sessions.”
She proceeded to give you an address to a restaurant but you didn’t go there straight away. You went back to your hotel, gathered your clothes into your bags, and checked out before heading back into the city. You had wandered the streets, going in and out of stores. You were mindlessly window-shopping until you realized the sun had set. You weren’t scared of the empty streets. You knew you were strong, with or without using your powers. Oddly enough, you were more scared of actually talking to Barnes than anything the night could throw at you.
“Stark?” You heard Barnes calling from behind you. “Jesus, it’s after midnight. What are you doing out here?”
“Raynor said I should try to find you.” You admitted, shoving your hands in your jacket pocket. “Why are you out?”
“I uh.. I was on a date.” He answered a bit awkwardly.
“Sounds exciting.” You nodded.
“Where are you staying? I’ll walk you back.” He changed the subject.
“Actually..”
“You don’t have anywhere to stay, do you?” He asked when you noticed your duffle bag and backpack.
“I never said that.”
“It’s written all over your face!” He laughed. “You were walking all over the city with your bags and you didn’t get robbed?”
“It is not! And I can take care of myself!”
“But it’s true, isn’t it?” He mocked. “You don’t have anywhere to stay?”
“Well, technically, yes.” You began to explain. “My appointments for apartment walk-throughs aren’t until later this week so I was going to get a hotel until then.”
“Jesus christ.” He groaned. “Come on.”
“Excuse me?”
“Come on.” He enunciated.
“I can get by on my own.” You said defensively, crossing your arms in defiance.
“Thing is, you don’t have to.” He countered simply. “Now come on. You’re gonna get your ass kicked if you stay out here.” When you didn’t move, he groaned and tried again. “You forget how to walk or something?”
“Just like that? No questions asked?” You asked carefully, slowly falling into stride with him.
“I asked my questions and got my answers already. I’m not gonna leave a kid like you on the streets or at a random hotel so get a move on. I don’t have all night.”
“You don’t want to know why Raynor told me to find you?”
“Let me guess. She told you I was alone and that it wasn’t good for me, that you should try and be a solid support system for me since we seem to know each other.”
“Actually, she said that I was very kind and you would do good with someone so pure of heart hanging around while you mope.” You joked, earning a small chuckle from him. “Nah, she said that we’re both going through very similar stuff and if I refuse to see her anymore, having someone who understands would be good for me.”
“I am sorry, you know…” He said suddenly.
“Yeah, you should be… For what?”
“Your grandparents… And your dad. Tony was a good guy.” He replied honestly.
“He was… Some people never saw past the fact that Stark Industries used to make weapons. They yelled that Iron Man was just another weapon for the military and Stark will never change… Some people adored Iron Man but hated Dad. They said Tony’s too flamboyant and egotistical to be a hero, but loved everything Iron Man did. And some people worshipped the ground he walked on for everything.”
“He made a huge sacrifice, and you probably hear this all the time..”
“Yeah, I do. But it’s different hearing it from you. It actually sounds sincere.” You looked over and offered him a small smile. “Thanks for the apology… Makes this whole thing less awkward.”
“How long are you going to be around anyways?”
“You’re trying to get rid of me already?” You feigned offense, putting a hand over your heart as if it broke in your chest. “I’m hurt, Barnes. I thought we were having a really nice moment. You know, we’d look back later when you’re in danger and I’ll save your life. You’d be looking at me like I’m crazy and think ‘Oh my god. Did she just save me? When did we become friends?’ And then, you remember this little talk and it all clicks.”
“Yeah, now I’m definitely ready to get rid of you.” He laughed.
“You fucking suck, dude.” You laughed with him.
When you two got back to his apartment, he tried to offer you the bedroom. He insisted that it wasn’t much, but it was better than nothing, to which you quickly denied. After leaving your shoes by the door, you dropped your bags at the foot of the small sofa. You laid down quickly on the piece of furniture as if to prove a point.
“I’m not kicking you out of your own bed, Barnes. You pay the rent, you get the bedroom.” You argued, waving your hand to dismiss him.
“Wow.” He said in mock amazement. “It’s not even your place and you’re making demands.”
“Get used to it.” You rolled your eyes, offering him two thumbs up. “We’re going to be best friends.”
“How’d I get so lucky?” He said sarcastically before heading towards the bedroom. “Goodnight, kid.” He called over his shoulder.
“Night Bestie!” You replied, flipping him off quickly when he turned his back.
“Please never call me that again.” He shook his head before disappearing down the hall.
“This is going to be interesting.” You said to yourself with a small chuckle before closing your eyes and attempting to sleep.
------
“Dad!” You screamed when you saw him on his knees. You watched the colorful energy from the Stones surge through his suit. Your fear froze you in place. All you could do was watch.
“I… Am… Iron Man.”
“NO!” The one syllable tore through your throat.
His arc reactor went dark, but he stood. He walked towards you but his movements were stiff, unnatural. Small wheezes came instead of breaths, as if he was trying to say something to you.
“You… You didn’t save me. Why didn’t you save me, Y/N?” A distorted version of your dad’s voice came out.
“No, Dad.. I, I tried. Strange said there was only one way.” You felt the tears falling down your cheeks. “Dad, I- I’m sorry. Forgive me.”
“You killed me. You didn’t save me. It’s your fault.”
“No..”
“It’s YOUR fault.”
“No.”
“ITS YOUR FAULT.”
“NO!”
------
You sat up with a start, unsure of your surroundings. You looked around, momentarily confused since you weren’t in the hotel room you woke up in. But when Bucky came out from down the hallway, your racing heart steadied.
“You’re still up?” He asked, walking past you towards the kitchen.
“No, I- Well kind of. Couldn’t sleep.” You explained, laying on your back again and dragging a hand down your face.
“Nightmare?” He asked, to which you made an unintelligible noise in response. “Same here.”
“Just a bad night for everyone, I guess.” You mumbled and closed your eyes.
“Was it about your dad?” He tried. “You tell your story and I’ll tell mine.”
“Let’s build a little more of a friendship before I dump my trauma on you..”
“Fair enough.. So what about your powers?”
“What about them?”
“What even are they?”
You lifted your hand to be in front of your eyes. You felt the heat crawling up your palm, the itch of a flame dancing on your finger tips. You remembered as a kid, watching a TV show about a world divided in fours, based on what element they could manipulate. You had practiced the moves you saw, and when the elements actually started to move around you, you got your dad to get you classes in the martial arts the show was based off of. You jokingly called yourself the Avatar, after the main character of the show. After a few years, you had mastered the martial arts themselves and worked to control your powers with it. Now, after those years and the time training with Natasha, you felt invincible in a fight.
You let out a tired sigh that came out as a mild flame. “Watch this.” You said simply, snapping your fingers to spark a small flame. You wiggled your fingers slowly, letting the flame dance between your digits. “I can manipulate the elements… Air, fire, water, earth. All of it. Includes ice, steam, sand, even lightning once. I want to try cooler stuff like lava or even metal. And I’ve been trying to use it more subtly, like just connect to it but that’s still a work in progress. And there’s a… darker potential I wonder about. But I don’t know if I’d ever try it.”
“Darker how?” He questioned carefully.
You couldn’t tell if he was actually interested in your powers or was just studying you, just to make sure it wasn’t a danger to have you around. You were slightly worried yourself that you could get dangerous, that you could spiral and try the darker ideas that you remember from your childhood show. Manipulating blood and even taking the air from someone’s lungs...
“I’d rather not talk about it right now.” You said simply. “But I will tell you about this.” You shook your wrist, jingling the metal cuff around your wrist to change the subject. “It’s part of the shrapnel that was in my dad’s chest, with some black tourmaline and onyx and labradorite.”
“What’s with the rocks?”
“Crystals.” You corrected with a point of your finger. “They’re for protection, courage, even understanding my life’s purpose… I keep them on this shrapnel bracelet to remind me that even when my dad isn’t around, he brought these things into my life.”
“Maybe you should schedule with Dr. Raynor some more… Seems like there’s a lot of talking you need to do.” He offered casually. “Need anything? Water? Liquor?”
You chuckled slightly. “Water would be cool, if you don’t mind.”
Suddenly, you felt a cold and slightly wet plastic on your forehead. You opened your eyes to a water bottle sitting on your forehead.
“Oh, you bastard.” You said as you moved the bottle off. You pulled the water from your face and swirled it into a small ball.
“You’re welcome.” He said simply, offering a thumbs up over his shoulder as he walked down the hall again. You sent the ball of water around the corner, aimed at the back of his head. You heard a small groan as it hit him and a splash of the extra water hitting the floor. “Okay, now I hate you.” He called out with a small laugh.
The next morning, you had gotten up before Bucky so you made your way to the kitchen. You pulled out some eggs, bread, and bacon. As you were heating the pans, Bucky made his way out. He walked past you to the fridge and stopped to look at you for a moment, as if wondering how you got there.
“I’m making breakfast. Do you want french toast or regular toast with eggs? Also, do you have any vanilla? And if you don’t want french toast, how do you like your eggs?” You said as he stared at you with a relatively blank expression.
“French toast is fine. No, I don’t have vanilla. Why would I have vanilla?” He answered as he walked to the living room.
“So the french toast doesn’t just taste like eggs? Wait, do you not know about flavor? About taste?” You joked. “I know you grew up in the 40’s and just boiled everything but come on! Get with the times, old man.”
“You’re not going to poison me, are you?”
“Did you have extra poison lying around?” You joked as he turned on the news. “I was going to put some together later and try sneaking it into dinner but if I could do it now…”
“Hey.” He said, not acknowledging your comment. “Come look at this.”
You turned the fire down on the warming pan and went to stand behind the sofa. You leaned over the back as Bucky gestured for you to watch the TV.
“Unrest in the wake of recent events has left us vulnerable. Every day, Americans feel it.” The man on the news gave his speech. Your brows furrowed in interest as you watched intently. “While we love heroes who put their lives on the line to defend the Earth, we also need a hero to defend this country.”
“He can’t be serious.” You mumbled, wrapping your arms across your stomach as if to comfort yourself. “I haven’t heard any-”
“Shut up for a minute… Please.” Bucky interjected calmly.
“We need a real person who embodies America’s greatest values. We need someone to inspire us again, someone who can be a symbol for us all… So, on behalf of the Department of Defense and our Commander-in-Chief, it is with great honor that we announce here today that the United States of America has a new hero. Join me in welcoming your new Captain America!”
“I thought Steve gave Sam the shield.” You said softly, the shock causing your brain to process things slowly.
“He did.” Bucky confirmed.
“And Sam gave it to this guy?”
“No… He wouldn’t do that.”
“So how does that guy have it?”
“I don’t know, but I’m going to find out.” He said firmly, standing quickly and leaving the room.
“I guess breakfast can wait…” You said to yourself, hurrying to at least turn off the fire. “Do I have time to shower and get changed or are we just running into this thing head first?”
“I’m sorry. We?”
“Yes, we.” You nodded. “This doesn’t sit right with me, some random guy having Steve’s shield… He gave it to Sam for a reason and I don’t think Sam would just give it up.”
“You sure you’re up for this?” He questioned, this time of an honest concern.
“It’s a reason to get off my ass. Plus it’s something to do so..”
“You might miss those apartment walk-throughs.” He jokingly countered.
“How tragic… Oh well. I’ll just crash with you until further notice.” You smiled in triumph.
“Good lord, what have I done?”

SIN MIEDO - BUCKY BARNES (FOUR)
Tumblr media
EPISODE FOUR : DELETED SCENE
Series tags: @calums-betch // SM masterlist // Feedback/opinions/etc would be greatly appreciated!! Feeling a little discouraged lately :/
Pairing: Stark!Reader x Bucky Barnes
Word Count: 1,884
Summary: With a chip on her shoulder, she proves to the boys that she can keep up.
“Get up.” You said simply, leaning over the back of the couch.
“What?” Barnes asked. “Why?”
“Training.”
“You don’t need to train, Y/N.” Sam tried.
“Yes I do.” You said in a matter of fact tone. “Because if you guys remember, you-“ You pushed your finger against Barnes’ temple. “-didn’t want me to go against Walker on my own, even though I did it anyway. So evidently you need to see first hand that I’m capable.”
“We know you’re capable.” Sam nodded.
“You know.” You corrected. “Evidently he doesn’t.”
“You really think I worry about you?” Barnes offered.
“I uh-“ You began before processing what he said. Your face scrunched in disappointment. “Well not anymore.”
“I didn’t mean it like that and you know it.” He sighed.
“No, it’s fine.” You said with your hands up in defeat. “You don’t worry about me so if I die-“
“Oh my god.” Barnes muttered before pushing himself to his feet. “Fine. Hurry up.”
“Would you look at that?” You teased. “Turns out, the bionic man has a conscious.”
“More like a soft spot.” Sam added.
“What was that?” You feigned ignorance.
“Nothing.” Barnes cut in. “Let’s get it over with.”
“What, no foreplay?” You taunted.
“Shut it, Stark.”
With a satisfied smirk, you swiped your arm to create a gust of wind strong enough to push all the furniture - including Sam on the couch - to the side. You unzipped your jacket and tossed it to the side so it wouldn’t get in your way. Barnes did his signature arm circle and eyed you carefully.
“You don’t have to prove anything to him!” Sam tried, to which you simply waved him off. “He’s probably scared of you.”
“Still time to back out.” Barnes said smugly.
“In your dreams, Old Man.” You smirked. “Just no face shots. Maybe like… light taps.”
You moved first, running towards him. He made a face to show he wasn’t impressed and swung an arm to catch you. You easily slid under and swept your leg to knock Barnes on his back.
“Tsk, Tsk. Very sloppy, Barnes.” You smirked from your position, which was very similar to Nat’s trademark. “You seem a little distracted..”
“I let you do that.” He rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, whatever.” You laughed as you hopped to your feet. “Don’t take it easy on me. I can take it.”
Right as the comment left your mouth, you felt something around your ankle. You looked down to see Barnes had grabbed it and once you made eye contact, he shot you a wink before pulling your foot from under you.
You landed hard on your back and let out a small groan. You hit your fist on the ground in annoyance before getting back up. You focused on your plan, thinking of how you could take him down. You knew you could do it easily with your powers. You could take down almost anyone with your powers. But you wanted to do this with your skill.
It was clear that he was stronger than you, but you were faster so you had to keep moving, keep changing eye line. You had to figure out ways to turn his own strength and momentum against him. You had to outsmart him. You told yourself to stay on your toes, avoid getting flat footed. Brute strength wasn’t going to be enough.
You ran at Barnes again, this time he moved to duck. You rolled over his back and landed beside him. You dropped an elbow between his shoulder blades and brought your knee up into his chest. He swung a fist that you blocked with your forearm.
You pushed him away, which threw you into a spin. You utilized the new momentum to drive an elbow into him that he ducked under. He took another shot at you that took both hands for you to catch.
Using your powers, you gave yourself a boost to flip yourself over his arm and land in a crouch to yank him to his back. You spun on a knee to wrap your legs around his arm. You locked your ankles together and pulled his arm outwards to trap him in an arm bar. You slid your body down to reach your legs across his chest to use your feet to push his other arm down
Barnes pushed himself to his feet, you still locked around his arm. Using his other arm, he separated your ankles and tried to shake you off. You threw your legs around his neck instead and flung your upper body around to flip Barnes to his back. You rolled through your landing to give yourself some room while Barnes got up.
“You’re nimble.” Barnes chuckled. You couldn’t tell if he was impressed or just amused. The whole session was probably entertaining for him, more to humor you than anything.
“Learned from the best.” You smiled, pointing to the sky as if giving credit to Nat. “Nimble, quick, agile, flexible. I’ve heard it all.”
“How about humble?” Sam called out, clearly entertained. You had nearly forgotten he was there.
“Never heard that one, no.” You laughed.
You turned your attention back to Barnes in time for his hand to come to your throat. He backed you against the counter, you bending backwards in an effort to keep distance. You chuckled nervously while your brain processed your situation. His grip wasn’t tight, but it was firm enough that you couldn’t slip out.
An idea came to you quickly. You grabbed his wrist with both hands and leaned fully onto the counter. You tucked your knees to your chest and extended your legs, pushing Barnes away and pushing yourself into a backwards tumble.
You landed with a loud thud and groaned as your back was now throbbing. You rolled to your side slowly, partially regretting that move. In part, you had always wanted a chance to do something like that, but you hadn’t quite figured out a graceful landing.
“Okay.” You said, coming around the counter and rubbing the base of your throat. “I did not expect that.”
“Can’t get distracted.” Barnes reasoned. He sounded like he was using it as a teaching moment, and you felt partially insulted. What made him think you needed to learn anything from him?
“Right.” You nodded, muttering your next sentence to yourself. “Cause a hand around my throat isn’t distracting.”
You and Barnes went at it again. You threw two quick body shots and a mock face shot. Barnes countered with a quick tap to your cheek and a swift kick to your side. You ducked his next kick and offered a front kick of your own, aimed for his chest. He easily caught your foot, which was what you wanted.
Using your caught leg as a pivot point, you threw your other foot for a roundhouse. Staying fair to your earlier rule, you pulled your foot to put enough distance so you didn’t catch his face. Your move twisted your leg out of Barnes grip and momentum let you continue your spin until you faced him.
“That would’ve been so cool!” You groaned at the missed opportunity, hopping frustratedly in your place. “Oh my god!”
“You’re the one who said not the face!” Barnes countered in disbelief.
“I know but my form was perfect!” You complained. “That would’ve put you on your ass for sure!” You sighed. “Nat would’ve been so proud.”
“Okay, I think you proved your point.” Sam offered with a content chuckle. “Looks like a draw to me.”
“I’m not done yet.” You shook your head. “Not till I pin him.”
“That sounds like an excuse to-“ Sam tried to tease.
“Shut up, Sam!” You cut him off quickly.
Barnes looked between you and Sam with furrowed brows. You used his distraction to move in. You closed the distance quickly and dropped to slide between his legs. You came out in a crouch and threw your elbow against the back of his knee.
He buckled slightly before turning to face you. You yelped in surprise when his hand gripped your upper arm and pulled you to your feet. He spun you quickly so your back was against his chest. His arms hooked under yours and his hands clasped behind your head.
“How you gonna get out of this?” He asked. You didn’t have to see him to know there was a smirk on his stupid face.
You met Sam’s eyes, who quirked an accusing eyebrow with an amused smirk. He seemed just as amused as Barnes was. You rolled your eyes and flipped him off before finishing what you started. You laughed to yourself as Sam’s face flashed offense.
“Like this.” You nodded your head to replace a shrug before stomping on his foot with your own.
Once his grip loosened, you pulled your elbows in and jammed them back into him. You ducked under his reaching arm and stuck one leg between his. You hooked your foot around his ankle while you reached an arm across his chest and grabbed his shirt sleeve.
That move quickly backfired when Barnes lifted his foot to snag your hooked ankle. You started tipping forward and he ducked under your flailing arm and out of the way, while you crashed into the floor. He knelt over you and opened his mouth to speak but you quickly cut him off.
You gripped his shirtfront and pulled him in. His eyes went wide while you tightly tucked your knees and snuck your feet against his stomach. You extended with as much force as you could muster - with a little help from your air abilities - and flipped him over you and onto his back.
He quickly got himself to his feet while you did the same. You two exchanged shots for what felt like an eternity. Trading body shots, blocking punches, throwing elbows. You tried a couple well placed kicks that were ducked or pushed away. You finally landed a solid front kick to his chest that sent him taking a few steps back.
You performed a quick handspring and wrapped your legs around his neck. You felt his hands land on your lower back and you didn’t know if it was to brace you or throw you so you moved quickly. With a deep, bracing breath, you threw yourself to the floor behind you. About halfway down, you changed your direction to more of a rotation so you wouldn’t land on your back.
You released your hold from around his neck and tried adjusting your hands to help push yourself up on your landing. You rolled a couple times and slid to your knees.
You quickly tumbled forward and placed a knee on his chest, your other foot on his vibranium wrist. He looked at you with surprised, yet amused eyes. You smiled proudly down at him and crossed your arms over your knee.
“I win.” You said happily, tapping his chest before letting him up. “And I barely used my powers!”
“Yeah, yeah.” He rolled his eyes jokingly. “You happy now?”
“You took it easy on me, didn’t you?” You challenged, eyes squinting in suspicion.
“Wouldn’t want to hurt that pretty face, now would we?” He used his knuckles to gently push your chin with a wink.

SIN MIEDO - BUCKY BARNES (FOUR)
Tumblr media
EPISODE FOUR : THE WORLD IS WATCHING (PREVIEW)
//Series tags: @calums-betch @bangtanxberm // SM Masterlist //

SIN MIEDO - BUCKY BARNES (TWO)
Tumblr media
EPISODE TWO - STAR SPANGLED MAN (PREVIEW)
Side note: The rest might be long chapters bc there’s a lot more action so they may get split into two pieces if they get too big. Happy reading! Xx // Tags: @calums-betch

SIN MIEDO - BUCKY BARNES (THREE)
Tumblr media
EPISODE THREE - POWER BROKER (PREVIEW)
// Tags: @calums-betch //
AN: This is one of my favorite chapters. You don’t see a lot here, but I think it really starts building that tension and relationship for Y/N. It wasn’t intended but it started happening and I had fun doing it. Happy reading!! xx

SIN MIEDO - BUCKY BARNES : ONE (PREVIEW)
Tumblr media
EPISODE ONE: NEW WORLD ORDER
(i promise the ATLA gif makes sense)
“But I will tell you about this.” You shook your wrist, jingling the metal cuff around your wrist.
