Aydin was so taken by Alex that he wouldn't let it go, and eventually the roommate got jealous, took it out on Alex, started rumors about her that ruined her reputation with friends and she somehow lost her scholarship.

Alex transferred to Trinity College and started escorting so that she wouldn't have student debt. Meanwhile, Aydin was trying to stay away from her (at this point, they have never met in person? I think?), and be the good son his father wanted. His father arranged a marriage for him, but he couldn't go through with it. He only wanted Alex. But by the time he was ready to go to her, she'd already saved herself and didn't want him. But she really did. But she wasn't ready to forgive him for abandoning her when his girlfriend was sabotaging her entire life..?

Oh, and he wanted her to stop escorting because that was gross - letting other men touch her (did he forget where he met her? Or was that okay because it was his girlfriend and for his pleasure?). And Alex refused because she wasn't going to let anyone else pay for her way, or let a man tell her what she was going to do (even though her plan was to eventually stop escorting anyway.) She was an fully independent woman who didn't need anyone's help.

I don't understand their relationship at all. They'd never even met in person before they decided that was the person for them. I mean, even Kai and Banks spent more time together before they got married, and their timeline is insanely short. The whole thing echoes the same idea that was started in Corrupt, which is that Alex has some sort of magnetism that draws people to her, and even though her attitude is in your face all the time, it's impossible to hate her because she's just so warm and delightful. Give me a break; she can't be this perfect.

Aydin planning this whole thing because Alex didn't want him even though he'd never really spent time with her screams pathetic to me. Sir, kindergarteners act more mature than this. And the fact that he was right and Alex wanted him all along, therefore making everything that happened in Nightfall seem worth it. Noooo.

He could have ruined Emory's life, but oh, it's okay because he was so in love with Alex and that's understandable🤩

Just a stupid ramble

I don't care what ANYONE says, Drew totally has some sort of cursh on Jake; Henry and Liam know abt it too. You might think: but he's dating Zoey, he can't be gay. (Well he was dating Zoey lmao, they broke up in the most recent episode)

BUT NO.

Being closeted is a thing. There's a chance that he's gay and just has some internalized homophobia, so he dates Zoey as a way to 'prove' he's straight. Also, throughout the series it is shown how shallow this relationship is, and just how little they seem to like each other. And Zoey is literally a gold digger and cheating on him sooo…… ALSO IN EPISODE 6, when Jake sees him in the mall and goes to hide from him, DREW LOOKS SO UNHAPPY, PROB CUZ JAKE "COULDNT" COME

Okay now that that's out of the way…. Even if he was gay, Jake is just his best friend, how would you think he has a crush on him?

PERFECT EXPLANATION FOR THIS.

In episode 5, in the starting scene in the cafeteria Drew gets annoyed when Jake isn't listening to him. He also acts Jealous over Jake thinking abt the music club, saying, AND I QUOTE "Y'know, I'm starting to wonder if you prefer their company over ours." You can't tell me that isn't showing blatant jealousy over it!!! Then Henry mentions that it makes Drew sound Jealous, and Drew BLUSHES tell's him to shut up, then AGAIN I QUOTE "I'm just saying, you used to care to listen to me." ME. He wasn't talking about him, Liam, and Henry when he said that, just HIMSELF!!! AND THE LOOK HE GIVES JAKE AFTER JUST…IDK IT SCREAMS JEALOUS BOYFRIEND ENERGY. Also then they start discussing how Jake is doing the competition to confess to Daisy, and when Liam is talking to Jake telling him to just confess normally, DREW LOOKED SO SAD. I MAY JUST BE DELUSIONAL BUT HE FR SEEMED SAD ABT IT. Then Jake has to leave cuz he's going to be late for music practice, and Henry (our fav character <333) says, once again I quote, "Don't look so blue, Drew. I know it must be sad to see your boy running off to the music freaks, instead of into your arms" and Drew blushes AGAIN. Alsooo its worth mentioning that Drew is rarely seen smiling. But every time he IS smiling (with maybe ONE exception), he is with Jake!!! ANOTHER THING I FIND THAT REALLY SUPPORTS THIS THEORY. Drew acts supportive towards Jake's crushes, but it seems like he only is when he feels like Jake won't get with them. Like with Daisy!! In episode 1, when Liam tells Jake he should just ask Daisy out already, Jake says he's "waiting for the right moment" (When someone says that u know damn well they ain't doing it) And Drew doesn't think he's actually going to do it, saying, and I quote, "You've been waiting for the 'right moment' for years" if this comment doesn't show you that he clearly doesn't see Jake taking a step to get with Daisy, then idk what else could. But Drew see's that Jake seem's to be taking an interest to Hailey, he doesn't act the same way. Well, at FIRST he does. Once again, I'm using episode 5 to support this lmao, when Jake is distracted during the game, Drew and Liam come up asking why he's making them lose blah blah, he looks over to where Hailey is and pretty much puts two and two together. He teases Jake in the moment, clearly thinking nothing will come of it. But when he sees they are spending more time together, he gets angry over it. Also when Jake says he doesn't like Hailey in this scene, his "Okay" comes off as so angry lmao. Also in episode 9 (the episode that genuinely makes me wanna kms /hj) When Jake is acting all blue, and finds out it's about Daisy, he seems SO annoyed over it. (Though, to be fair, it could be bc he justs wants to spend some time with his friend without him moping abt shit, but still.) When Drew says "Are you singing for Daisy, or for Hailey" He doesn't seem happy about either option fr. When Drew gets reminded of how Jake is singing for Daisy for Hailey specifically, two girls he thinks Jake likes, he has angry outbursts (once again, bro is so jealous) Drew doesn't even bother to mention Zander by name, his anger is clearly just about how close Hailey and Jake have gotten. And what about Daisy? Her and Jake barely ever speak, so Drew isn't nearly as bothered about that.

OKAY. That's all I feel like writing, but there is quite a few more examples throughout tmf that could support this theory!! Just a note, unless Drew has a redemption arc and becomes less judgemental and controlling; this relationship would be toxic, and I understand this. I don't want Drake to become canon (Well if drew has a redemption arc..then maybe I do…) and I don't believe it has any chance of becoming canon, though I really do think that there's a possibilty of Drew liking Jake. Which makes me rlly feel bad for the dude even if he is sort of an asshole :(

At first, Taka didn't realise Mondo's changement of attitude. Sure he was a bit more clingy when they were around Daiya but it's not like Mondo hated physical touch ! To the Pinkie holding to the hand holding passing to the arm around your shoulder and finally to the hand on your hip, Mondo was always touching Taka. So he didn't pay much mind to it.

But, it got worse. Way worse.

When Taka even mentioned the fact that they could pass at Mondo's house (No Daiya mentioned !!! Just his house !!), Mondo would start to trow a fit saying that they didn't need to be here everyday.

When Taka started to call Daiya by his first name (the Older Owada having asking him multiple to do so and finally explaining that Owada-kun was weird to him and that he prefered being called by his first name anyway) Mondo lost his mind ! He went on a long rant about the fact that he was still Owada-kun until they we're friends and that it was "disrespectful" of Taka to call Daiya by his first name. Mondo ? Caring about respect ? Nah. That was weird.

And then, Taka started to bite back. If Mondo was going to be a brat, Taka was going to be petty.

He used everything against Mondo. Saying that he was being a controling boyfriend and that he could call whoever he wanted by whatever name he wanted (if the person in question agreed to, wish in that case he did). He started to not tell him when he would come to their house (showing up without calling at least twice to make sure the person is not busy ?? That wasn't very Taka like.) And he took Daiya's number. Just in case. (No really he did take it just in case, the number of time Mondo had gotten it trouble and only told his brother and "forgot" to tell Taka is hilarous)

And lastly. They fighted about that. Taka hated that Mondo was doing all this stuff. He wasn't like that with anyone !! Why suddenly was he acting like an animal when it came to his brother ??

It was a big fight honestly. Taka was in tears and Mondo was almost there too. But Mondo snapped and finally yelled "IF IT MATTER TO YA SOOO MUCH WHY DON'T YA JUST GO TO MY HOUSE AND MY BROTHA-"

And Boom. The truth was out. Taka understood. Mondo was jealous of Daiya.

And Taka ? Well Taka just laughed. Not a sweet small laugh. Not the usual "Ha ha ha". But an almost psychotic one. Because how could Mondo be so fucking stupid !

After another hour of Taka screaming love letters at Mondo and a good half hour of kissing the two lovers we're finally reunitated in a cuddle session.

The last word Mondo heard before falling asleep was "I love you Mondo Owada. And no one not even your brother would change that".

and she feels the same way :,) not like she’d ever admit it. when eddie sees how she blushes when she talks about him, or how she’s extra considerate to steve (when steve is looking through her employee recommendation shelf and he puts the wrong tape in the wrong shelf, she waits until he turns his back to swap the tapes back in the correct position so he doesn’t feel bad about messing up the selection. if it were anybody else, especially eds, that tape would be a projectile weapon aimed at their head) eddie teases her relentlessly, singing “you love steveeeee!!!” chasing her around the music store as she blushes, covers her ears and runs around the store trying to escape him, going “NO. but yeah. yeah. yeah.

she’s hanging out at fam video one day, chilling on the counter, eating all the snacks, helping him stock stuff, and nancy comes in. it’s obvious. he’s so hung up on her. she’s not jealous, but this, along with her knowledge that steve feels like he needs to be in a rship to feel whole… she hates seeing him think so little of himself when she truly thinks he’s the sweetest guy

stuff like that is easier said than done. she can tell steve he needs to appreciate himself before he gets into a relationship, but she goes off and dates some guy that doesn’t treat her right. (partially to get over steve too because the emotions she feels for him are SO BIG she doesn’t really know how to handle them)

steve and her have a huge blowout argument because he’s concerned that she’s not getting treated right but it ends up unravelling into a fight because these two are Bad At Emotions.

they ignore each other for a while, steve constantly regretfully looking across the way to get glimpses of her. at night she screams the lyrics to you’re so vain at the polaroid she has of him pinned to her bedroom wall. tensions are high. (this doesn’t last for long, of course. they just can’t take not being friends anymore. they run out of their stores at the same time, babbling about how sorry they are and how they were so stupid and how they miss each other so much. they have makeup hugs in the midpoint between the two stores like a couple of nerds)

one night, she wakes steve up with a phone call. her shitty boyfriend dropped her off in the middle of nowhere, and she doesn’t have a ride home.

he drives all the way out to pick her up. they hold each other’s hands on the way back to the car and it just feels right. they’re there for each other.

just as he pulls up to her house, he admits everything. he pours his heart out, they even almost kiss and (screammmmmm she wants to so bad) but they can’t. they make a pact to stay friends and work on themselves and help each other get through this together. then, maybe one day...

they’re all smiles and pinky promises until she closes the door and he’s alone in the car and it’s just… :( but it’s the right thing to do

so they stay besties as always but now there’s EXTRA PINING and a lot of almost accidental kisses during high anxiety moments and acting like an old married couple but also wee bits of angsty pining and jealousy

so yes! that is my crazy person ramble and the whole dynamic i have in my head between them 😭 <3 of course there’s pining and the longing and it’s a bit sad and angsty but more than anything i define their relationship as super silly and goofy and being besties to lovers. in the end they get together. trust.

like you get this guy who's been pressured his whole life to be perfect and that affected him in such a way that he gets anxious if he doesn't have his clock beeping at Every moment for him to go do something. he needs praise or hell think he's absolutely worthless. everyone thinks he's simply perfect specially his boyfriend who at one point explicitly says that, which ends up pressuring him even more and when they break up bc he was "too perfect" he fucking breaks down and can't fucjing take care of himself and his place is a trash dump but outside his house he still needs to keep the perfect facade and his ex boyfriend meets him again and sees how messed up and not put together he actually is and instead of being disappointed bc that's sukyuns greatest fear hes just finds it endearing and like they eventually get back together and he slowly starts to not control his life so much he stops using his watch and meets his boyfriend for longer and tries new food and gets to be spontaneous and just actually do whatever and do things he wanted to but couldn't and we'd get to see this man heal and maybe start getting along with his step brother bc both of them have been treated badly by their father in different ways and each hold a lot of grudges against the other bc of that but they're not kids anymore and they both grow from this and realize they have more in common than they think. and then maybe his work gets hectic and we have Jun come into scene and he's nervous bc hey who's this guy he's really close to my bf and like it's ok to be a little jealous and stuff but I feel like what the author couldve done was not focusing on his jealousy and possessiveness but instead on his insecurities of not being good enough for woo in and maybe yeah we get some intrusive thoughts which only reinforce to us the fact that he needs help and who knows after woo in tells him about how him and Jun are just family for him and his own tragic backstory he'll open up about his own and hey maybe he'll get some help and woo in will be by his side

and instead of a fucking rape scene we could get him snapping or relapsing and lashing out at wooin without hurting him. like fr I'm so mad that they showed his intrusive thoughts and he was clearly uncomfortable and scared and hated that he thought those things and then he just goes and acts on them. like come ON. there are so many different ways to have handled that scene without the rape. and I'm not saying they should talk in ooc ways like no, I mean he can lash out and scream and be mad all he wants!!! the thing is: his possessiveness and jealousy aren't healthy and the story should've shown us that in a less violent way (bc again, he's not a bad guy to be doing atrocious things like this the only other sexual assaulter was kwoni and the assault scene was very explicitly negative) . if he doesn't want to hurt woo in then he shouldn't have!!! lock him out of the house kick him out don't let him in throw him out!!! don't fucking rape the man you supposedly love!!! what I seriously don't understand is if that rape scene was NOT romanticized, then what the fuck is going on??? is woo in gonna end up with the man who raped him??? so there's no way it WASN'T romanticized. the whole "he couldn't control himself" bs we see all the time in shitty stories. the important point here is that he's not supposed to be a bad person. but how am I supposed to believe that now???? fr his whole character is ruined after this there's no turning back this was literally one of the worst writing decisions I have ever seen (I say this bc this webtoon is fr one of my favorites and I wasn't expecting something like this when yoonseol and jungsoos arcs exist within the same media!!!!!! aaaaaaasgrghegehdg)

he actually reminds me a little of seo-an from the golden palace although their circumstances are a little different (and seo-an isn't a rapist) like idk sukyun could take a leave off work and try to heal from all this fr that man needs professional help. “Kuroo-!” you yelped in surprised, bed bouncing beneath you. The second he had thrown you down, he ripped off his shirt and made a noise of frustration when he couldn’t shed his skinny jeans fast enough. Brows furrowed, he began hopping furiously to yank them off.

You laughed, much to his annoyance.

“You’re gonna hurt yourself if you keep up with that. What’s the rush?”

He sighed, and carefully pulled them off his ankles. Standing up straight, he seemed to have composed himself, with that cocky smirk on his rugged face. Your eyes trailed down his lean, long body. It was all you could do not to scream, he was so gorgeous. He took a few sweeping steps to where you lay, and got right on top of you, hands either side of your head. His eyes bore into you, it made you squirm internally, not that you would ever admit it.

“Just want you so bad, kitten.”

You barked out a laugh as if your heart didn’t jolt at his stupid pet name. It was such a stupid name, but coming from him it made you melt. Again, not like you’d ever admit it.

“Ew, Tetsu don’t call me kitten, it’s cr-“

He cut you off by leaning down and kissing you, you could feel his snake bites against your bottom lip. He groaned softly, shoving his tongue down your throat. He tasted like his sour apple vape, and his hair was soft when you ran your fingers through it. You could barely contain your butterflies, eyes squeezed closed.

No matter how many times you and Kuroo hung out, it always felt so fresh. Maybe it was because he was exciting, or because he was a little bit wild, you didn’t know.

He leaned down closer to you, getting on his elbows, deepening the kiss. He pulled away and smirked at your breathlessness. With a slender, ring adorned hand, he reached beneath your top and cupped your tits over your bra. He gave them a sharp squeeze and started placing chaste kisses on your neck. But... there were times, afterwards, when he would pull in you so tight, tell you how good you were for him, how well you did, how pretty you looked. Any doubts you had were gone after a few hushed words on his tobacco reeking rickety old bed. You’d never really had a relationship like this before, but you assumed it was just because Kuroo was so chill. You were probably boyfriend and girlfriend, he just didn’t feel the need to announce it, he was laidback like that. So what if you guys had a lot of sex? Weren’t you a new couple? Wasn’t this just the honeymoon stage were you can’t get your hands off each other? You didn’t want to seem high maintenance and nag, so you let it be. He was sweet enough to you, right now everything was good.

Until it wasn’t.

A clatter sounded downstairs, the door slamming open against the hallway wall.

“Kuroo! Hey man, I brought some California!”, a voice called from bellow.

Kuroo broke away immediately, spit trailing from your neck to his pink lips.

“Shit, shit, shit, shit,” Kuroo mumbled, pushing off the bed and scrambling the pick up his discarded clothes and shove them back on.

You sat up, disgruntled, rearranging your bra strap from were he’d kneaded at it.

“What’s wrong? Who is that?”

He shot you a glance before continuing to yank back on his jeans.

“Uh, so change of plan, I can’t do tonight. I need you to go home. Discreetly.”

“What? Tetsu, I’m already here,” you scoffed.

You had never seen him so... frantic.

“I know babe, and I’m really sorry about that, but my friends are here early than I said.”

“So? Can’t I meet your friends?”

“Well, yeah you can meet them, just not with me. I don’t want them knowing that I-“

He cut himself off, but you had heard enough to understand.

There was a beat of silence, only disturbed by Kuroo’s friends calling for him.

Your mouth hung open, and you scoffed in shock.

You shouldn’t be surprised really. It’s so obvious now that you think about it. So that’s what this was. That explains everything. He didn’t really like you, he was just using you. That’s why he didn’t take you anywhere, or why he didn’t show you he cared. It was because he didn’t. He wasn’t “afraid of getting close to people” or “emotionally distant”, he was just upfront about not giving two shits about you aside from your vagina. I guess he didn’t want his friends to know he was furiously screwing a fat girl any chance he got. He was embarrassed of you. You were something to be ashamed of. Your stomach jerked as you got to your feet. You were pissed, but that didn’t mean it didn’t really hurt. You had liked him. A lot.

“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”

You could see the panic in his eyes, it was quite funny actually. Of course you new what it meant, but it still made you feel a little better to watch his eyes widen like that, to hold a shred of power over him.

“I mean- well I didn’t- come on babe you know I didn’t mean it like that-“ he laughed nervously, not noticing the footsteps in the landing. You rolled your eyes. You may have been naive, but you certainly weren’t going to fall for his shit again. Whatever he spouted.

“Don’t give me that bullshit. Just say it, your embarrassed of me.”

“Y/N, please, don’t you think-“

Two men burst through the door, one with spiked grey hair and one with fluffy black hair.

“Kuroo! What the hell are you doing up here we’ve been-“ the grey haired one, stopped when his eyes went from a shirtless Kuroo to you.

Your eyes flickered to Kuroo, he looked mortified.

“Ah. I see. Well, Akaashi, we better give these two some time, we can just-“

“Oh no, I was just leaving,” you grabbed your jacket from on top of his chest of drawers and turned back to the two men, putting on a big smile, adrenaline and fury spurring you on.

“I’m Y/N, by the way.”

Your eyes shot to Kuroo, who looking like get was about to shit himself.

“You probably haven’t heard of me, me and Kuroo have actually been having sex for three months. He kept it a secret because he’s embarrassed of me. We should hang out soon though!”

“Y/N-!” Kuroo yelled, exasperation clear in his tone, but you were already descending the stairs.

He came into the hall, hands rubbing his temples.

“Y/N just come talk for a second, I can-“

But he was cut off by the door slamming.

You got in your car parked outside and sped away.

The whir of the engine and the monotony of the roads cleared your mind a bit, a mist of anger still remaining.

You can’t believe you let yourself be tricked. you were a fully grown woman, but you had been reeled in hook, line and sinker. Not only had you been reeled in, you have been reeled in by a man that still had tik tok LED lights in his room and a fucking monster can collection at the age of 24 fucking years old. The more you thought about him, the more you realised how much of an emo loser he was. Of course you were still hurting, but it was more of the angry hurt you feel when it turns out your crush is homophobic or something (been there done that, don’t ask). He was a waste of oxygen, you had decided by the time you made it back to your apartment. A waste of perfectly good space that could most definitely not get the kitty anymore. You got inside your house, pulled on some comfies and got on facetime with your friends.You told them all about what happened, and they passionately bitched about him with you, confirming your suspicion that they never liked him in the first place. They also told you to forget about his existence, he wasn’t worth a slither of your brain power, he was dirt compared to you. All in all, you felt marginally better, saying goodbye to your friends while they still giggled about how stupid Kuroo’s hair was.

This was just a speed bump, you thought as you tucked yourself into bed, you would get over this.

Fast.

“Who’s Bokuto been talking to all night?” Yamamoto leaned over to ask Lev, shouting over the blaring music.

It was a week after you had thrown Kuroo to the curb, and he was out with a couple of volleyball friends, some from Nekoma, but there was also Bokuto with them.

“I’m not sure. I think it’s Y/N something? She’s in class. She’s pretty chill.”

Kuroo’s ears perked up, and he turned around to face his friends up against the bar.

“Bokuto’s talking to who?” he said through gritted teeth.

“Y/N. She goes to my-“

“I know who Y/N is,” kuroo snapped, taking a swig of the beer in his hand and scanning the dance floor for either one of you. He found bokuto first, shoulder against the wall, holding a drink as he leant down to have you whisper something in his ear. That’s when Kuroo paid attention to you. You looked... you looked gorgeous. He felt jealousy creep up inside him. How many times had you been out looking like that since you broke things off? How many guys had you slept with since? How dare Bokuto chat you up when he knew you two had been a thing? Wasn’t he meant to be Kuroo’s friend? As Kuroo wound himself up, you and bokuto continued your extremely pleasant conversation.

“I just wanna say, sorry about Kuroo. He’s a real bonehead, but we’ve been friends since high school so I can’t ditch him.”

You snorted into your cocktail.

“What?”

“Bonehead?”

He frowned and straightened up indignantly.

“Yeah, and? What’s wrong with bonehead?”

“No no, nothing, it’s just very Legally Blonde.”

He beamed down at you.

“I love Legally Blonde!”

“You do? Me too!”

This big beefy man was very cute, you had been talking for nearly three hours now, but you never ran out of things to say. And, aside from the obligatory introduction compliments, he had not made any move to try and get you into a wendy’s bathroom as quick as possible, which you couldn’t say of yours and kuroo’s first meeting.

He had dreamy eyes, you noted as he smiled for the nth time that night.

“Whose your favourite-?”

“What the fuck are you doing man?”

You glanced scathingly over to the familiar face of your old fling.

“What?” Bokuto asked back, clearly done with his friends bad boy shtick.

“Why are you talking to her when... when you know?”

“What’s there to know? I’m talking to her because I want to, and she wants to.”

He looked over to you for approval.

“Right?”

You nodded, a little nervous. You hated Kuroo’s guts, but you knew how weirdly possessive he was, you didn’t wanna cause trouble for Bokuto.

“See? Now I don’t think she wants to see you, right?”

He looked at you again. You nodded again.

“Ok? You guys are over, now are we done?”

Kuroo huffed. His eyes flitted from Bokuto to you, remembering you were there most likely, and he scowled.

“No, we aren’t done, what are you trying to pull anyway? Trying to piss me off by talking to someone I know? Are you really that petty? Well, your little plan is working, so just-just stop, ok?”

You felt like screaming. You had just come out here to have a nice time, not listen to Kuroo’s narcissistic whining.

“Can you just fuck off? Was I not clear enough or something? You’re dead to me, Kuroo. I’m just trying to have a nice night.”

Kuroo’s mouth gaped open. He had never been spoken to like that, never. He clenched his fists at his sides and his glare intensified.

“You’re lucky I gave you the time of day, fat ugly slut.”

He grabbed Bokuto’s shoulder roughly, turning him to face him completely.

“Hey man, thanks for clearing up my sloppy seconds, really good of you. Good to know I’ve got great friends like you.”

Those were the last things out of Kuroo’s mouth before bokuto landed a punch on his cheek, knocking him to the ground.

“You’re a fucking asshole man,” Bokuto grunted.

He stepped over where Kuroo lay, and held out a hand for you to step over too. You took it quietly and trailed along behind him to the door, fingers still locked. His hands were warm, and big. Kuroo’s face must hurt right now. The thought made you smile. He held the door open for you before sighing, resting his back against the wall. You stood in front of him, twiddling with your fingers.

“I am so sorry about that,” You apologised, embarrassed and shaken by the scene Kuroo had made, “I shouldn’t have wound him up, and I shouldn’t have talked to you after I knew you guys were friends, I promise I didn’t mean to start anything.”

“Don’t be, if anything I’m sorry for not making him leave right away. And either way,” he gently reached for your hand again, and you let him take it,”I’m glad you talked to me. I’d like it if you talked to me even more.”

Warnings: jon’s very low self-esteem

“What do you think of him?” Jon suddenly asks, staring blankly at the wall of the breakroom.

Tim pauses in the middle of chewing his sandwich to give him a long, considering look.

He’s mostly decided to suspend his disbelief until further notice, simply to keep from losing his mind. What else is one supposed to do when future versions of Jon and Martin, who are also apparently dating, tell you that your workplace is currently involved in a plot to end the world? Ideally he would’ve processed one big revelation at a time, but apparently they don’t have time for that, so goodbye grip on reality, it was nice knowing you. I’ll hit the restart button as soon as things start making sense again.

Tim wipes his hand across his mouth, swallows, and asks, “You mean Jon II?”

Jon rolls his eyes, like Tim’s being obtuse on purpose just to annoy him. “Yes, I mean...him. Me. Jon II.” Then his nose wrinkles amusingly, the same way it always does whenever he says the moniker. He’s hated it since the beginning, but it was a battle he quickly lost, what with all three of his assistants opposing him.

Normally, Tim wouldn’t have thought twice about shrugging and answering, but...Jon’s been uncharacteristically quiet lately. Oh sure, he’d blushed up a storm upon learning that his future self and Martin were dating, and he’d expressed his own misgivings at the beginning, but...since then he’s been eerily, silently watchful. In Tim’s experience, when presented with this sort of puzzle Jon generally buries himself in research, and doesn’t emerge until he’s good and ready to do so.

There’s something else on his mind.

So Tim puts down his sandwich and gives himself a moment to think carefully through his response. “I mean...he’s a lot like you, obviously. But he seems…” What’s a polite way to say, the trauma and the boyfriend seems to have made him a little more easygoing? He certainly smiles more freely than he ever has, which...honestly, makes Tim want to cry sometimes. How horrible, that so much abject cruelty had just made him more kind. “...tired. A little less high-strung?”

“I see,” Jon says, turning his mulish gaze to his curry, dragging his spoon through the thick sauce.

Tim waits a beat longer, but when nothing else seems forthcoming he prompts, “Why do you ask?”

Jon’s reaction is only to press his lips into a thin, tight line. Tim knows this mood; he’s weighing how insecure he’ll look if he says whatever’s actually bothering him out loud, versus how much he wants someone else to hear it. Pushing him now will only make him clam up, so Tim just waits.

Tim’s patience is rewarded when Jon blurts, “But you like him. You...you all do.”

“Yes,” Tim says slowly, because it’s true. Martin’s so enamoured with a Jon that actually likes him that he keeps bringing him tea just to get another glimpse of that gentle, thankful smile, just to strike up another conversation about nothing. Sasha has decided that he’s the most interesting thing that’s ever happened to her, and insists on consulting him whenever she reads a new true statement.

Tim’s personally a little unnerved by the awful, sad way future Jon looks at him sometimes, or the way he flinches back whenever someone tries to touch him without warning. But he’d taken Tim aside and quietly explained everything he knew about what happened to Danny, so.

Oh, Tim thinks, feeling like an idiot for not realizing it sooner. Jon may be an old hand at fooling others with his grumpy persona, but Tim knows that he’s just using it to hide his massive inferiority complex. “Wait, are you jealous?”

Jon ducks his head, and his ears darken. Gotcha, Tim thinks. 

“Jon, you know that that’s still you, right?” he explains gently, quietly relieved that it’s not something more complicated. “We like him just as much as we like you, because you’re the same person.”

“But he’s not the same, is he?” Jon protests. “Look at the scars on his neck, on his hand. And he has panic attacks, and he flinches at loud noises, and, and—”

He breaks off, biting down hard on his lip, threading a hand through his hair.

Tim stares at him, feeling off-kilter, like he missed a step coming down the stairs. That doesn’t sound like jealousy. “...Jon?”

Jon shakes his head, his breath escaping him in thready, devastated gasps.

He can’t tell what’s going on in Jon’s head, and it’s starting to scare him. “I can’t help you if you don’t tell me what’s wrong.”

Jon just sits there for a moment long, tugging at his hair, staring sightlessly at the middle distance. Tim gently untangles his fingers, giving him something a little more solid to hold onto.

“You all like him,” he says at last. “You all...he’s so kind, and he’s funny, and you like him, because someone hurt him first. He’s different—we’re different—because someone cut our throat and burned our hand, and you like him better.”

Tim’s horrified. “Jon—”

“Should I accept that?��� he continues, the words flooding from him like a dam finally exploding in a shower of groaning wood and weathered stone. “Do I—how do I carry on knowing that I could be the person I want to become, if only I give myself to monstrosity, if only I let myself be hurt like that?”

“Of course we’re not going to let that happen to you!” Tim interrupts, voice higher and more frightened than he meant it to be. He’s applying duct tape to a raging river. He has no fucking idea how to fix this. “You don’t deserve—”

“Don’t I?” Jon demands, whirling on him, eyes flashing. “Don’t I deserve to be happy? Or am I unworthy of even this kind of improvement? Am I doomed to be like this forever?” Tears well in his eyes, spill over. “Don’t I deserve it?”

And then he slowly, inevitably, dissolves into tears, his slim shoulders shaking as he curls over and buries his face in his elbow. Tim drapes an arm across his back, angling his body so he can gently tuck Jon’s head against his shoulder. He doesn’t know what else he’s supposed to do. Even if Jon were in any shape to hear it, he has no idea how to fix this.

Tim could tell him that he and Martin and Sasha all think that he’s fine the way he is, and it’s the stress of an apparently eldritch job that’s causing him to push people away, but he doubts Jon would believe it. Words mean nothing when actions have been screaming something entirely different all this time, and Jon’s always been more observant than they give him credit for.

“Oh, Jon,” he whispers when the tears finally start to slow, dropping a kiss onto silver and black hair. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know that you felt that way.”

Jon pulls away and shrugs, averting his reddened eyes. Tim squeezes his elbow to prevent him from retreating entirely. They sit like that for a moment, Jon going very still and very tense under Tim’s hand, settling into the vulnerability like an open wound.

“I’m sorry,” Jon says finally, sniffing heavily. He’s aiming for his usual brusque, dry tone, but his voice is shaking, and he’s not fooling anyone. “That was unprofessional of me.”

Before Tim can stop himself, an incredulous laugh rips out of him. “Jon,” he says quickly, “We’re well beyond professional. You know that, right? You don’t have to hide from me.”

Jon flushes. “Yes, well—it was unfair for me to put this on you, as your fr—as…” His expression goes all fragile and uncertain, and Tim’s heart aches.

“It’s not unfair,” Tim corrects gently. “As your friend,” and here he pauses for emphasis, “I want to know when you’re feeling like this.”

“Oh,” Jon murmurs, then straightens and scrubs the teartracks from his cheeks. “Oh.”

Tim nods reassuringly, takes a deep breath, and makes an educated guess. “I know you’re scared, Jon. We all are. This place is...horrible, and seeing what you went through is...terrifying. I can’t imagine how that must be for you.” He lets his eyes flicker up. Jon’s still watching him, rapt, and good, good. I haven’t lost him. “I won’t deny that he’s getting along with Sasha and Martin quite well, but...but that’s not because of what he—you—went through. It’s because….right now, you’re pushing people away because you’re scared, but he’s already done that. He knows that pushing people away just means you end up alone. It doesn’t mean he’s a better person, just that he’s a little wiser.”

“But how can you be sure?” Jon asks, leaning forward, eyes big and desperate.

“I mean, I wouldn’t have become your friend if I didn’t like you,” Tim admits unashamedly.

His bold honesty is rewarded by Jon flushing and ducking his head.

“But even so,” he continues, sobering, “Even if you were the worst person on the planet—and you’re not—you wouldn’t deserve to be hurt like that, no matter what the outcome. Does that make sense?”

Jon looks thoughtful as he says, “I—yes. Yes, that makes sense.”

He can tell though, that Jon doesn’t quite believe him. That’s okay—honestly, it’s what he was expecting. Tim’s been running headfirst into the wall that is Jon’s terrible self-esteem for as long as they’ve been friends. This problem is going to take more than one half-assed pep talk.

That’s okay, though. Jon’s worth the effort.
