Overall, I don't hate the new cover designs but I'm not super excited for them either.

I think it's interesting that PD is carrying on with this pattern between Michael/Rika and Damon/Winter, with they're covers just having smoke, while Kai/Banks and Willemmy feature objects that actually pertain to their story. Not sure if they're doing this on purpose or if they just can't avoid making them different even by accident.

Conclave is a little weird. It takes place in a ship, why are we in a cathedral?

But this is the third cover resign for this series (second redesign). Hopefully the last, though I'm not hopeful. Does anyone have a favorite cover? From this or any of the past versions? How do you feel about this redesign? What would you feature on the covers if you were designing them?

I may be late to this, but I was just made aware of Anya Taylor Joy's wedding and I can't get rid of the feeling that PD wanted these same vibes for Rika's wedding but couldn't make it happen. The candles, the anatomically correct heart cakes, the veil that gives off haunting and mysterious. I don't know, just feels like they were really leaning into this for Rika when the wedding was at St. Killian's, and then it all went sideways. But I could be wrong.

What do u think kai and will does for their girls' bday and vice versa?

Truthfully I have no idea. I'm not huge on celebrations and I think the group as a whole have a lot of odd celebrations and holidays throughout the year that makes it hard to determine if birthdays will be over the top parties or intimate affairs for the two. Also, it would change from year to year. These boys wouldn't do the same thing twice unless it was part of a tradition. The girls I think would be more consistent but clever. They'd all have to get creative.

Fortunately for the boys, Banks and Emory are the type of girls that probably don't care how big they go. More important to them is that whatever they do shows how much their husbands understand and know them.

I think at least one year, Will does something around movies, since that was technically their first date (though they debate about that frequently. He thinks it counts because they made out; she thinks it doesn't because he didn't ask her out; he protests that taking her from the school was a round-about way of asking - she could have said no. It goes on for a while.). Maybe doing a old Hollywood themed night at their cinema, elevating the decor, rolling out a red carpet, having the staff wear suits so everything feels a little special, and he has all her favorite movies playing. Even though it's Emory's day, I don't think she'd want the space all to herself. She'd love sharing it with the town. I can't decide if Will's cheesy enough to have a trailer that's just a slide show of his favorite pictures and videos of Emory so that everyone is forced to watch it before every movie.

Or maybe he even takes her to a movie premiere in Hollywood for something he knows she'd love. She's pampered all day, he gets her a special dress for the event, and then takes her out to dinner somewhere nice.

For Will, Emory knows she can't go wrong with a big party. So that doesn't change. Every year she comes up with a new theme that's a surprise for him. He doesn't find out what it is until he gets to see the outfit she lays out for him. Even without him drinking, the nights get pretty wild and some of his best stories originate from an Emory Grayson Planned Event (TM)

I don't know Banks and Kai as well, but he's definitely giving me out of the country vibes for at least one birthday. Maybe a month long trip to Japan since her interest in the culture has grown since working with his father.

Kai likes the chase and Banks knows it. The tradition they started was a scavenger hunt, with Banks leaving clues and hints around Meridian and Thunder Bay for Kai to figure out. Throughout the day, he gets small presents, leading up to the big one... and her. How fast he gets his reward all depends on how quick he is to solve the puzzles. Fortunately for her, he's a motivated man.

I hope this answers your questions! I'm open to other's thoughts or ideas too. I'm not very creative when it comes to these kinds of things, so I'm sure there better ideas floating around. But thanks for the ask!!

Omg I just remembered one of the sweetest willemmy moments, during that sleepover at the school thingy, after Will had given Emory his sleeping bag, he just laid on the ground beside her so she could be comfortable and when he had his eyes closed she just stared at him while he was sleeping, admiring him🥲 then Damon made it awkward 😒still a cute moment

And how he wasn't really asleep so he probably knew she was looking but he didn't do anything to make her feel self-conscious. Then when she fell asleep, he took her glasses off and probably stared at her for a long time!!!

Willemmy. My heart. My beloved.

and just want to make some comments here about:

i honest to god disagree with PD on this because birthday girl solely existed and written for the "nice guy who works hard in life, and deserves good things to happen to him" trope. Like pd literally wrote this for their fans who wanted something differently. And while pike lawson, the mmc, was not the most clean mmc ever, he really was overally just a good and great man.

Birthday Girl is different from your usual work. Did you worry that it would disappoint readers?

I think I'm always nervous. Especially when my editor gets ahold of a book! She's brutal.

But honestly, I never feel like I have a choice but to be who I am. I loved the idea, and it felt really good—a nice change of pace to write a kinder hero, someone who works hard for a living and deserves to come home to a person who loves him. I remember a reader saying, "This is the book I didn't know I needed from Penelope Douglas," and that was great to hear, because readers, I think, needed to see that I could write a man like Pike. He has his moments, but he's not a bully. He has no real trauma. He's a good man.

and guess what, birthday girl was actually loved by a lot of fans, even if theyre not fans of taboo romances, dark romances or bully romances. The only criticisms this book get was because of is 1. Age gap, 2. Light Misogyny, and 3. If they're just not into smutty taboo indie romances. Literally. So if PD KNOWS how to write mmc like pike and fmc like jordan, wtf do they mean they dont know how to write jerks? Like wh does what they said always dont make sense?

but then they also almost only seem like will grayson is a cute quirky guy acting as if he did not assault rika in corrupt so? Idk. And them being confused when people dont understand why tuernan in credence ended up with kaleb because kaleb was not given enough space in the books at the other two potential love imterest is so? Like why are you surprised? Putting aside all the taboo or problematic aspects of the book, kaleb still was not around tiernan a lot and their development was shite.

Ah see, I haven't read any of their other books, but I have heard birthday girl is one of their more well received even if credence is better known. I apologize for talking about what I didn't know.

So it seems they do understand how to write a character that isn't a jerk. But then why did the reader ask for a mmc that isn't a jerk, and why didn't PD just point to birthday girl instead of bringing up nightfall, which they should know their fans are divided on?

PD isn't an author I give a lot of mind to. For the most part, I'm not into what they write, so their reasonings don't often make sense to me. They really took a misstep here by asking for feedback and then immediately rejecting it when someone brought up a topic they didn't want to discuss (Alex). If that's the case, don't bring up the topic (nightfall) first.

Edited paragraph: It would be one thing if they actually wanted to learn and expand their understanding of what the issue is, but I truly don't think they care. They like what they wrote. They're proud of what they wrote. And they have a right to enjoy it. Writing takes so much time and energy, to reach a finished product is an accomplishment. I have no doubt it hurts to present your work to "fans" and then have them riot. Which is why they're wanting to shut down conversations about it; it hurts. But no body is conceding their side, and we shouldn't be expected to.

I don't feel there is a lot here to make sense of, and I don't understand enough PD to even attempt to explain a reason. It's unfortunate, really. Sometimes the best thing to do is just ignore the author and like you said, move on.

That being said, it's super frustrating to see. The op in the screenshots seemed to ask for a guy that wasn't a jerk, and PD was like "well, I tried and nobody liked it."

And part of the problem was Alex, as well as the other characters trampling all over willemmy's time together. But people also didn't like how Will treated Emory outside of Alex. PD seems to struggle with understanding what really makes their MLI seem like jerks.

Either way, they clearly don't want to talk about Alex and it's probably because they're not going to change their mind, so it's a conversation that won't go anywhere. That's fair for them. It's their right. But then don't ask, and don't act like you don't know and haven't heard the complaints before.

It's ashame they won't just say they liked the Alex arc and understand that people don't, but it is what they wrote and they won't apologize for it. At least that would be honest.

Sorry this hurts. I can't say I'm too emotional-tied to PDs opinions, so for the most part I can ignore them and move on. Still, I definitely get that for those who want to be heard this isn't easy. I'm not sure what else to say other than try to focus more on the community and less on PD.

I'm sorry I'm probably not much help or comfort! But thank you for bringing this up. I'm sure so many feel the same way.

How do you think Will and Emory would/could have started talking again after their split. (During high school) also how they would have acted.

Hmm, not really sure. I haven't thought about this one. But it would have to start with honesty. Both were being stubborn, and their cold front was a battle of wills - especially on Will's side. Maybe I've got it backwards, but I think Will probably had to try a lot harder to avoid Emory than she did with him.

That being said, Emory was the only one keeping a secrets during that time. So she would have to be the one to reach out first. It could come after a bad bout with Martin, when she finally reaches out for help. I think if she took the first step, Will would jump back in wholehearted. He was never really out, after all. He wouldn't be so stupid this time, because Martin wouldn't have the material to bait him with. His anger would be in his control.

Or maybe they end up alone somehow, by accident. Will could snap first, bitter and sarcastic, hoping she feels a shred of the pain he's in. And in a moment of weakness, Emory might agree with him; confirm his suspicions. But she would emphasize that this doesn't change anything. She's still not going to leave her grandmother or give up her limited freedom, or plans for the future.

I think if at this point, in either scenario, Will gave up needing her to depend on him - to be her only "man" - he might actually become the person she can confide in. But at that time, he didn't have the maturity to know that. The more he pulled on her, the more she'd resist. If he just let her come to her to him, just by keeping that smile and patience of his, he'd get what he wanted. The more he let her take steps towards him, the closer they'd get. But that's the ideal scenario.

In actuality, Will figured out the truth at some point before he graduated and did nothing with that information. They both got to keep their pride, but their happiness, the years apart, and silence was the cost of neither reaching out.

I'm not sure how they would begin talking again, or a way for it to turn out good, though I think I would have loved more high school moments between them.

I always think about this but what if Emory had a boyfriend and he came to see her when they were back in thunder bay like imagine the drama and will getting a taste of his own medicine that would’ve been so good .

I've never really been in love with that idea, but I know it's popular. I just don't think it would have gone anywhere. I do have a version of this, but it's different, in that it doesn't focus on making Will jealous, but instead more appreciative of Emory building a life for herself and recognizing what she's giving up by choosing him. I want him to be in awe of her, not focused on some other guy that he thinks he can better.

But I definitely understand where you're coming from. I've given Emory an "Alex" too, but it doesn't cause problems because Emory has it together, unlike Will. And unlike Alex, the guy knows his place in Emory's life.
