i don’t think we talk enough about how the Master loves playing games. dressing up. playing pretend. setting up elaborate traps and puzzles for the Doctor, even when they know that it won’t result in anything.

for them, it’s the thrill of the game. that satisfaction that comes with engineering a perfect plan and watching all the pieces fall into place. (which is why the Master being good at fixing the TARDIS makes so much sense to me- they’re a natural engineer at heart.)

and i think it’s so interesting how that evolved into doing incredibly evil, fucked up things. because the Master needed to raise the stakes, make it more interesting for himself. just like the Doctor’s meddling with the universe got bigger and more destructive over their lifetimes.

but like. it’s not necessarily because the Master had deep-seated trauma that caused them to be angry at the world, which is the typical villain backstory (although i do love that headcanon too.) instead, it was a game that just grew bigger and bigger and then they started seeing everything as pawns. they played the part of the Master until the role overtook who they were.
