The kids helped me make mashed potatoes, sauteed brussel sprouts, and roasted chicken drumsticks for dinner, and it was delicious! And they both did a good job eating their veggies. We had strength training in the afternoon, then they helped with chores, and now they're hanging at the pool. They're taking to the new lifestyle so well right now. I hope we can keep it up 🤞

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #16
April 26-May 3 2024
President Biden announced $3 billion to help replace lead pipes in the drinking water system. Millions of Americans get their drinking water through lead pipes, which are toxic, no level of lead exposure is safe. This problem disproportionately affects people of color and low income communities. This first investment of a planned $15 billion will replace 1.7 million lead pipe lines. The Biden Administration plans to replace all lead pipes in the country by the end of the decade.
President Biden canceled the student debt of 317,000 former students of a fraudulent for-profit college system. The Art Institutes was a for-profit system of dozens of schools offering degrees in video-game design and other arts. After years of legal troubles around misleading students and falsifying data the last AI schools closed abruptly without warning in September last year. This adds to the $29 billion in debt for 1.7 borrowers who wee mislead and defrauded by their schools which the Biden Administration has done, and a total debt relief for 4.6 million borrowers so far under Biden.
President Biden expanded two California national monuments protecting thousands of acres of land. The two national monuments are the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, which are being expanded by 120,000 acres. The new protections cover lands of cultural and religious importance to a number of California based native communities. This expansion was first proposed by then Senator Kamala Harris in 2018 as part of a wide ranging plan to expand and protect public land in California. This expansion is part of the Administration's goals to protect, conserve, and restore at least 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by 2030.
The Department of Transportation announced new rules that will require car manufacturers to install automatic braking systems in new cars. Starting in 2029 all new cars will be required to have systems to detect pedestrians and automatically apply the breaks in an emergency. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration projects this new rule will save 360 lives every year and prevent at least 24,000 injuries annually.
The IRS announced plans to ramp up audits on the wealthiest Americans. The IRS plans on increasing its audit rate on taxpayers who make over $10 million a year. After decades of Republicans in Congress cutting IRS funding to protect wealthy tax cheats the Biden Administration passed $80 billion for tougher enforcement on the wealthy. The IRS has been able to collect just in one year $500 Million in undisputed but unpaid back taxes from wealthy households, and shows a rise of $31 billion from audits in the 2023 tax year. The IRS also announced its free direct file pilot program was a smashing success. The program allowed tax payers across 12 states to file directly for free with the IRS over the internet. The IRS announced that 140,000 tax payers were able to use it over their target of 100,000, they estimated it saved $5.6 million in tax prep fees, over 90% of users were happy with the webpage and reported it quicker and easier than companies like H&R Block. the IRS plans to bring direct file nationwide next year.
The Department of Interior announced plans for new off shore wind power. The two new sites, off the coast of Oregon and in the Gulf of Maine, would together generate 18 gigawatts of totally clean energy, enough to power 6 million homes.
The Biden Administration announced new rules to finally allow DACA recipients to be covered by Obamacare. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is an Obama era policy that allows people brought to the United States as children without legal status to remain and to legally work. However for years DACA recipients have not been able to get health coverage through the Obamacare Health Care Marketplace. This rule change will bring health coverage to at least 100,000 uninsured people.
The Department of Health and Human Services finalized rules that require LGBTQ+ and Intersex minors in the foster care system be placed in supportive and affirming homes.
The Senate confirmed Georgia Alexakis to a life time federal judgeship in Illinois. This brings the total number of federal judges appointed by President Biden to 194. For the first time in history the majority of a President's nominees to the federal bench have not been white men.

Content Warning ⚠️: diet, exercise, mental health, children's health talk
Ooookay, I've had some rest, let me try this again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We set up a daily calendar to track our efforts. We started with a weigh in; both kids are obese 🥺. They know that they aren't expected to lose weight, just expected to do their honest best and put in effort towards being healthier. Weight is just another measurement of health and progress, and I have no doubt in my mind that being more active and eating healthier will cause a bit of weight loss.
Each day we get four tallies: routine, chores, exercise, and food. At the end of each day, we take an honest reflection at our efforts, and self report. At the end of each week, we add up the tallies we earned out of the end goal of 28, to see how we did. We're not aiming for perfection, just progress. We want to get the majority of points per day and week. Then there is a little square for reflection on how we feel the week went.
We made food and fitness journals! We bought composition notebooks and decorated them with stickers. Each day we write down our meals, our activities, and a small personal blurb about how we felt about that day. This is just to get them into the habit of being mindful of their bodies and feelings, and how the new foods and exercises are impacting them over time. We had a blast decorating them lol.
We start our days with some light wake up stretching and a brief walk with the pups. Then we have a healthy breakfast. They are allowed, of course, water and a piece of fruit before the walk if they need it. I'm not trying to make them feel like crud. They take their supplements with breakfast, and then do their morning personal routines; brushing teeth, showering, etc.
Tumblr media
Part of the healthy diet process is learning to prepare healthy meals they can enjoy. We all work together in the kitchen, learning cooking skills and nutrition facts as we go, making new foods with varieties of ingredients to expand their pallets and show that there are many ways to make a healthy meal. We talk about the purpose of carbs, fats, fiber, protein, etc, and how to balance them throughout the day to meet our needs. And of course, we talk about their current health issues and how we can eat better in order to regain better health.
This is where the drama starts: pickiness and an unwillingness to just do what needs to be done. I understand pickiness, I was a picky kid. But my mom took a no bullshit approach; I'd eat what I was given or I wouldn't eat. We couldn't afford to waste food or make multiple meals. She was attentive enough to try to avoid foods I didn't like when she could, of course, but we knew that what we had is what we got and we needed to make the best of it.
These kiddos have never been challenged by family in their lives. It's understandable, in a way; I'm a big ol softy, and I don't like making them cry or feel uncomfortable lol. But some discomfort in life is not only healthy, but necessary. They need to learn the skills to help themselves manage opposition and challenging situations without completely breaking down, giving up, or throwing a fit. And unfortunately, they've made it into early teenagerhood without learning any of these skills, because their custodial guardian (their mom) is even softer than I am lol, and caters to their every desire on the regular. They don't do chores at home, they don't have to eat family meals, they don't have to be active or spend time outside. They regularly get trips to Starbucks and other fast food as snacks instead.of occasional treats. There's so much behavioral disorder that we practically need to reprogram the way they work in everyday life. It's an Everest of a problem. The eldest child throws toddler style tantrums when they don't get their way or are forced to do anything they aren't interested in, which is simply inappropriate for someone at the age of 14. Last night was full of fighting and dramatics for the last few hours of the day. But we sat down as a family and talked about expectations and consequences, so hopefully we are all on the same page today.
Tumblr media
Being active will probably be the easier part. They're still just kids, and enjoy fun activities. Yesterday we spent an hour swimming at the pool, which was tiring but fun. And that's the kind of exercise I want them to know. I want to give them the opportunity to seek out activities they enjoy that also benefit their bodies and minds. We also went on a second walk with the dogs after dinner, so they get quite a bit of walking in daily, which is (in my opinion) one of the best and most easily accessible exercises.
And we're doing this all as a family unit. No one is immune to the new regimen. We're all overweight and could have better health and more active lives. We're all participating in the changes, and ready to support each other. It's just about getting through the discomfort of change and challenge, and hoping they're willing to let themselves improve and grow. The eldest had a break down last night before bed, because we're managing screen time and they're not used to not being allowed to stay up on discord all night with their friends. But we gave them the space to get their emotions out, and we answered all their questions honestly and let them know why we're doing everything that we're doing. Sometimes the best love you can give is tough love. And eventually they calmed down and seemed to be alright. But it's a lot of stress and emotional strain, and I'm just desperately hoping today goes a bit more smoothly.

Prompt 304
SO. Turns out that Danny is apparently a clone. Who knew? Not him! Would have loved to know that earlier, but he doesn’t exactly have time to freak out about that because Ellie is melting. She’s going to die if he doesn’t do something and he already gave so much ecto that they both look ten now, but the only thing he can do is pray to everything and Clockwork that this portal works.
Because Ellie needs their Original’s dna to stabilize her, not his own slowly destabilizing blood, and that means going to another dimension to where they’re still alive. This has to work- even if they can never go back, it’ll be worth it if he can just make sure Ellie lives. She’s all he has now.

Alright. Willis Todd being an abusive father to Jason is a trope often utilized. Comparing this version of him to Bruce's reactions to Red Hood is fantastic. Lots to analyze there.
However, I raise you. There needs to be more fanwork addressing the classism behind Willis Todd being characterized as an abusive alcoholic. In some version of canon, Willis Todd was a good dad in a shitty situation. He was poor, his wife (Catherine) was sick, and he had a newborn baby he needed to provide for. In this horrid situation, where he has no family to fall back on and no higher education to obtain a decent well-paying job, he tries to get quick money. He's desperate to keep both his wife and son alive.
Catherine turns to drugs because it's easier and cheaper to buy drugs than healthcare. The pain she experiences is debilitating, and she'd do anything to not feel pain for one godsdamned second. Unfortunately, this turns into an addiction.
This ultimately shapes the way that Jason views crime. Bruce, while he may be sympathetic to individuals who resort to crime to pay their bills, will not understand huddling in Crime Alley in the dead of winter as he debates whether to buy food or pay for heating. He won't understand the bitterness, hatred, pain, and resignation of never having enough money to survive as you get chewed up again and again.
If Jason's dad is just an abusive criminal, that not only perpetuates the notion that all criminals are evil, but it will shape how Jason views those who commit crime. Breaking the law doesn't make someone bad. There's plenty of reasons people commit crime, whether to survive, protect someone, or something else. The issue, especially in Gotham, is the system that perpetuates wealth inequality through bribes and unethical governmental practices.
Anyway, I think Jason's Red Hood is more fleshed out if it accounts for him acknowledging the desperation behind goons and small-time criminals because he grew up without other options.
