The Boys is the Undertale of superhero media
#james talks#like they both work specifically because of how they subvert expectations of the genre#if you watched The Boys without knowing anything about the culture it was responding to it just wouldn't fucking work as well as it does.#like yes The Boys is still a phenomenal show with a lot of relevant things to say but its subversive qualities come through in—#understanding how it is messing with our understanding of how we put superheroes on pedestals like Homelander is NOT just evil superman—#Homelander is a stand-in for how we idealize people in power because we see them as inherently heroic and someone working for us.#like being a hero is a business in the world of The Boys.#the first shot of Homelander is literally him walking into the frame with his American flag cape. HIS NAME IS FUCKING HOMELANDER.#like he's very clearly commentary on the state of the US fearmongering about criminals and immigrants and shit like—#it's very clearly commentary on fascism but like it just doesn't hit like it's supposed to if you don't know stuff like Marvel and DC and—#the place they serve in culture and what that means for us as a whole like—#I'll avoid going on a rant about the MCU's ideology of Perpetual War and how DC's whole thing is just glorifying violence—#(see: Zack Snyder's obsessive need to make everything in slow mo but also go watch Patrick H Willem's video on him)#but like Alan Moore's critiques of superheroes and fascism in Watchmen and V for Vendetta like you have to know what it's responding to.#Undertale is subversive obviously in the same way bc if you haven't played RPGs the game doesn't fucking hit for you at all.#see: Razbuten's video on what it's like for a non-gamer to play an RPG.#that video was what got me thinking about this at all but anyway like hopefully this makes sense#james rants in the tags#The Boys

Big Boy Genius Plan To Get Attention And Money When Plan 'A' (Steal Everything) Has Failed
Make apology video. Make it suck, make up ridiculous excuses, give it a stupid title, fill it with ads. Truly make it awful.
Fucking idiots hate-watch the video over and over again, leaving angry or mocking comments and thumbs-downs which boost engagement.
Video rockets up the YouTube search results and recommendations algorithm.
Everyone starts talking all over the internet about how stupid the video is. The whole world is talking about you again!
All that discussion prompts more people to go watch the video, further boosting the channel in YouTube's algorithm.
Re-post old videos, make new ones, who fucking cares buddy? Your bullshit apology has gone viral and now you're at the top of the search results again!
New people who aren't aware of all the thievery you did will continue watching the videos (AD REVENUE $$$$$) and maybe even sign up for your Patreon.
You're back on top, baby! Everyone is watching, talking about, and thinking about you, and the money is rolling back in! Sure, most people are talking about how much they HATE you, but all that does is bring you more of that delicious (and lucrative) attention!
Seriously, don't watch the apology video and do not give him any more attention. Don't spend the whole day talking about this asshole. This is what he wants. Do not feed the troll. Go watch the playlist of queer youtubers Hbomberguy made instead. They are the ones who deserve your attention.
Your time on this earth is finite. Don't waste it on someone who doesn't deserve it.

casa tidmouth celebrates its one year anniversary..... 2 days ago! but hey, it's the thought that matters! thank you very much for everything -- the support, the fanarts, the asks..... I truly appreciate them all!!!
truth to be told, when I first started this blog, I never thought it would grow to such lengths like this. I wasn't good at drawing engines (and I still am. but hey at least I'm learning! >:]) so what did I draw first? the engines as pokemon for my old pmd AU XD it was what started everything, but then I tried my hand at turning the engines into humans and voila. casa tidmouth is born. I grew alongside it, developed the story and characters as time went by, and garnered an audience, even friends!
Tumblr media
(they'll be back. if the public demands. someday.)
I'm eternally grateful to those who stuck around this entire year. I know I'll be busier than ever as I'm starting med school and life will get tougher from here on out, but knowing that I have people who got my back uplifts me. thank you for support!
and look!!!! in a year, we managed to reach 850 followers! and it's all thanks to you! I hope you look forward to what this blog will bring in the future!
Tumblr media
wanna know a fun fact? the reason why I revisited this childhood show of mine is because the twitter account sexymanotd posted a pic of duck the great western engine. then I talked about it in my priv, then a friend sent a couple of gijinkas from various people (mainly asktrio156). I decided to look more into it in tumblr….. the rest is history!

the marauder's fandom needs to understand a couple things ASAP
LET PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT HEADCANONS. People are not racist for headcannoning someone as white, they are not transphobic for headcannoning someone as cis gender conforming.
IF someone says "Why do they all need to be queer" or "I dont see any reason why we would need queer/black characters" EDUCATE THEM pls for the love of GOD
STOP TELLING PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT HEADCANONS THAT "YOU JUST DON'T KNOW THEM LIKE I DO" it SUCKS don't do it its shit
In general, just maybe block ppl a bit more instead of telling them they're wrong in a fandom where most characters are somewhat open to interpretation
on that note, sirius, Regulus, Remus and Peter as well as James have SO MUCH canon character. Creative freedom be given and all, but ffs stop acting like we don't know anything about them in canon, ESPECIALLY REMUS AND REGULUS
Educate yourself about mlm and wlw stereotypes please. please. just do it.
thats it for now, please read the whole post before hating and please educate yourself with multiple sources

"Masters of the Air details. Part 6-Bombsight and bombing.
"[...] I was brought in to Masters of the Air to teach actors how to look like they knew what they were doing, and the bombardier work would certainly be important to the series.
"[...] The Norden bombsight was being developed in the 1920’s by Carl Lucas Norden, a Swiss engineer, who worked for the US Navy. He developed this sight (eventually the Mark 15 series for the Navy and the M series for the Army) and the autopilot system that goes along with it. The autopilot was needed as it could fly the aircraft more precisely on the bomb run than the pilot could. Just don’t tell the pilot this!
"The Mk 15 Norden sight was a beautiful hand-built and fit device with an analog computer that would calculate the point in space at which to drop the bombs. The Bombardier would input information to the sight in the form of altitude, air speed and the ballistics of the bomb. On the bomb run he would pick up the target with the crosshairs in the optics and engage a motor drive that would keep the crosshairs synchronized on the target during the approach. On the run he would also make fine adjustments to be sure the crosshair stayed on the target for range and drift. When the sighting angle reached the predetermined dropping angle the sight sent an electrical signal to the intervalometer that would drop the selected bombs at the specified interval.
"The mission order would define what bombs were to be used and what the nose and tail fuses were to be used and their delay settings, if any. The order would also specify the aiming point and the interval to be set in to the intervalometer. This would space the bombs across the ground as desired. Maybe you wanted the bombs dropped quickly, right next to each other, to try and put a hole in the roof of the hardened sub pens. Or maybe you wanted to walk them down a long runway. The intervalometer would be set for your ground speed and how many feet apart you wanted the bombs to hit on the ground.
"If you wanted to drop a string of bombs all down a line, like a runway or a front line, then you would want the center bomb of the stick to hit in the middle so you would adjust the trail plate on the bombsight the right amount to drop the first bomb early and have the center bomb right in the middle. This center bomb spot would be the mean point of impact or MPI.
"When I arrived on set at MoTA they had several nose sections with varying amounts of the bombardier’s equipment and controls. They had one real Norden sight head called the hero sight in the hero fuselage. The hero label was attached to the best props where special or close up filming with lead actors might take place.
"The stabilizer is the lower half of the bombsight and contains the yaw gyro for the autopilot. The bombsight head sits on the stabilizer and pivots to keep pointed at the target.
"The hero sight was sitting on a prop stabilizer, and it needed more accessories and work to look as good as the real sight head. I asked if they had a better stabilizer around and they thought so, but where it was seemed to be uncertain. It was eventually located and cleaned up for mounting in the hero nose. It was still missing some items namely the directional panel and an Automatic Bombing Computer or ABC. The ABC was used on the bomb run so they could perform evasive maneuvers and not have to do the run and drift calculations again. I was told that a Norden Bombsight expert in the UK said that they didn’t use the ABC early in the war, if at all. I had to differ with that opinion as it was most certainly used throughout the early war and almost all the way through. Its use dropped off later in the war if anything.
"The ABC is quite visible on top of the stabilizer so I thought the hero sight should have the ABC not only for authenticity but for eye candy too. I asked my daughter, Sydney, to send out the directional panel and ABC set from our museum’s bombsight back home in California.
"[...] Like with the pilots and their own preference for hand positions on the throttles, the bombardiers were given the options of the two different hand configurations bombardiers often used to adjust the sight on the run. The more uncomfortable two-handed method or the single hand. Which eye to use while looking through the eyepiece was also their own decision as this would have been a preference item as well.
"We also taught them how to look over the sight to pick up the target then transition down to the eye piece and to uncage and adjust the gyro for leveling the optics in case this might be of interest to the directors. We went over the control sequence for the bomb bay doors, bomb select and intervalometer adjustments and the bomb run itself.
"[...] The standard procedure for the bomb run was developed early on by the 8th AF which was to navigate to a point where the bomb run would begin. This was called the Initial Point or IP. From the IP it was either a straight line into the target, or evasive maneuvers along this line to the target.
"At the IP, the bombardier would open the bomb bay doors. This would change the drag and the airspeed accordingly. It was up to the pilot to adjust power to maintaining a specific airspeed and altitude which was critical to accurate bombing. The pilot would also re-trim the aircraft so it would fly hands off at which point he would engage the servos of the autopilot and turn control of the aircraft over to the bombardier. The Bombardier would fly the aircraft through the bombsight and its connection to the autopilot.
"The main bombardier actor, Elliot Warren, portrayed James R. Douglass. Elliot was a quick learn and did a great job. He was a pleasure to work with and I really enjoyed his scenes.
"[...]Props made several Norden sights. Rubber ones and some with more detail. One was set up with squibs to detonate when the sight was shot by the actor with his 45 cal M1911 pistol. They were wired and the squibs went off with the sound of the pistol. It looked pretty good on camera.
"It was AAF policy to try and destroy the bombsight so it would not fall in to enemy hands. Some of the manuals actually discuss what should be done to destroy it. I would hope that the large gyro in the sight head was not spinning at its normal 25,000 RPM when the bullet hit the 2-pound rotor, as I would imagine that it would come apart and potentially send shrapnel back at the guy holding the gun!
"The lighting folks would control the instruments and lights throughout the fuselages, like the bomb bay door open light on the bombardier’s panel. We put in a lag between the bomb door handle operation and the door open light coming on. Not an accurate lag as we obviously will not be filming for the actual 20 seconds or so needed to open the electric bomb bay doors. It was a delight to work with the lighting crew and they did magical work especially with the custom made instrumentation.
"[...] Here is a full-on rant about the Norden so you might want to skip out!
"Keep in mind that this is my own opinion. An American who is discussing the Norden sight. Your mileage may vary.
"Recently there has been, what I call a ‘revisionist historians’ view of the Norden Bombsight. In short, this modern interpretation, pretty much lead by Malcolm Gladwell’s TED Talk on YouTube and his book Bomber Mafia, calls in to question the usefulness of the Norden. Basically, saying it was not effective and some of his followers have even been using the term ‘useless’ recently.
"Just keep a few thoughts of this rant in mind.
"The bomb sighting systems we had going into WWII were based on technology left over from WWI. They were simple sights with wires to sight down. They were meant for aircraft speeds and altitudes from WWI. Now skip ahead to the new bombers flying two to three times as fast and at altitudes up to 30,000 feet instead of 3000 feet.
"An all-new system was needed to solve this new complex bombing problem. Sperry was working on it and Norden, who had left employment at Sperry, started his own effort.
"The Sperry and Norden sights were the leaders of synchronous sights going in to WWII. They both were good sights which were constantly being improved. They had each also developed a highly advanced autopilot that the bombardier used to fly the aircraft on the bomb run.
"These were visual sights, so it was necessary to see the target in order to be effective. Not so easy in Europe all year long. Radar and other methods were coming online to help with all weather bombing but there were many limitations in play.
"Results would certainly vary from target to target, and it was a brand new technology made up of gyros to keep the optics level, a mechanical computer to make the calculations, motors to drive the optics. Lots of parts needed to be able to work at 200 degrees F to 50 below, not to mention the complex autopilot system.
"So, my main question is: If this new technology was so bad then what exactly was it that brought the German war effort to its knees?
"The RAF was going after cities and targets at night and the AAF was trying to hit specific strategic targets like submarine production, aircraft and weapons plants, fuel and machine parts to make the weapons work. The very things the Germans needed to wage war.
"What brought this production essentially to a halt?
"I submit that it was the bombing campaign.
"If it was the bombing campaign, then it was likely the Norden and Sperry sights that made it possible. Mostly the Norden as it was chosen as the primary system and the Sperry S-1 sight was discontinued.
"The invasion of fortress Europe was certainly needed to push the Germans all the way back to Berlin, but I would also submit that these efforts were made easier by the results of the bombing campaign.
"There were certainly mistakes and errors all throughout this campaign as there was a massive learning curve in doing something that had never been accomplished on such a scale before. How to amass hundreds to a thousand plus bombers to rally together to attack a target effectively and then get home. The attrition was unbelievably steep in the early years as so beautifully depicted in Master’s.
"Just how do you get back in that bomber the next day and face near certain death once again like they did. Again, as seen in Master’s. Just a few of the wonderful aspects of this series and the history behind it.
"Having a PR campaign about the weapon that would help win the war, like Harold T. Barth created for Norden, was not such a bad thing. If it rallied the troops and home front to keep up morale, then I think it was a good thing. Just open any wartime magazine and look at the full page ads all throughout. Each ad promoting the companies contribution to winning the war effort. BF Goodrich with their new Rivnut or Seeger Refrigerator building bomb racks and feed chutes for the 50's. It was a nationwide industrial and personal team effort to wage this war against the Axis. Norden was one of them.
"Barth said that the sight could hit a pickle barrel from 20,000 feet. When the press asked if this was true Norden replied ‘sure if you tell me which pickle you want me to hit’. Some folks nowadays are taking this literally and complaining that it really couldn’t hit a specific pickle. No kidding. Say it isn’t so. Those bastards!
"To Mr. Gladwell and his followers, I'll ask again: What was it, in your mind, that allowed all of those bombs to take out the German AND the Japanese war efforts? If it wasn’t Sperry’s S-1 and Norden’s M series bombsights, then just exactly what was it?
"Rant over. Flak vest, with crotch protector, and helmet, on."

Whispers of Lilies: A Jily Short Story
I wrote a 2,500 word Jily Hanahaki fanfic. If you're wondering if this is out of my norm, yes it is. But the story was calling to me and I couldn't resist writing it. Hanahaki absolutely screams Jily to me.
An excerpt:
"Lily there they are again," Mary whispered in the hallway between the Charms and Potions classroom on a Tuesday.
"Look I see more!" Marlene cried out late on a Friday night as she, Mary, and Lily all returned to the Gryffindor common room.
"There's more blood on these than the last ones," Lily said slowly on a Wednesday morning as she took in the mess in the greenhouse.
It had started a few weeks earlier: flower petals throughout the castle. Lily had never seen anything like it before, but she knew the old witch's tale: when unrequited love became too much, it began to consume the lover's very being. Flowers would grow in the lungs, causing the lover to cough up bloody flowers. The realm of magic was called Hanahaki, and it was incurable. Whoever was suffering was deeply in love with someone who didn't love them back, and their body was slowly succumbing to their mental anguish over it.
"There's so much blood," Marlene agreed. A week ago, it was just a trickle. Whoever it is must be getting sicker.
Lily nodded, a sinking feeling in her stomach. Because these weren't just any flowers, they were lilies. And everyone who understood Hanahaki magic knew that that very likely meant that the person was in love with Lily herself.
"It's got to be James Potter, right?" Mary asked. Even as she spoke, there was regret in her tone.
"James Potter's love is not pure," Lily scoffed. She knew enough about James' childish nature to know that him calling out to her across the grass was just for his entertainment. Him staring at her across the lunch table was for attention. When he picked up her books and offered to carry them, it was to play act as a hero.
James Potter was no sincere lover.
It's on AO3 here!

Into The Woods: Why the movie was shit
I'm not the first person to talk about this, nor will I be the last. It's pretty widely accepted among theatre fans that Disney bungled up this fantastic show. But it's important nevertheless to talk about how it went wrong, 'cause adaptations are delicate things, and the core of a good adaptation is an understanding of the themes and messages that constitute the story, and not just the story itself. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine together wove a fairly meticulous fabric that is this musical, and it's fascinating to see how Disney's adaptation reduced it to rags.
For a summary of this show's plot, I recommend watching the first few minutes of Sideways' video on the themes in this show, mainly because it's a fairly complex plot and he explains it well. This is especially important, since the plot of the movie is……definitely not the same.(The whole video is definitely worth a watch too, and it brings up points that I might talk about here too.) Done that? Good, let's keep going.
"The narrator comes on stage, and he starts, 'Once upon a time.' Now once he says that, the audience starts to relax inside. Now what I wanted to do was to wake them up immediately, so before [the narrator] gets to the fifth word, I wanted a loud sound from the orchestra, or the piano"
That was Stephen Sondheim talking about the very beginning of the show. The choices he made in the songs were almost all deliberate, they were for a reason.
Now what does the movie do? They say the entire first line of the song before playing the musical sting. They knew that they had to have that there, since it was part of the prologue song, but they didn't understand at all why the song was structured the way it was.
Let this be an omen as to how the movie will adapt this musical.
Another important part of the first song is the constant quarter note motion the piano makes throughout. It's what keeps the energy of the first song going, and is the song's connective tissue. Guess what the movie didn't do? As a result, it makes the prologue feel like five different disconnected small songs.
The main problem that the adaptation suffered, was the removal of seemingly small things, but which ultimately led to the plot of the movie collapsing in on itself.
The first major one is the removal of the narrator and the baker's father. Yes, the movie technically had a narrating voice, and the father got….like one scene, both played much more prominent roles in the original musical. The baker's father, initially a mysterious old man, pulled many of the threads that made the various characters really interact, and he's an outside force helping move the story along. As for the narrator…well it's important to note that the narrator is a character. A major feature of the show is that it's a story with characters, and the show knows that. The narrator dictated how the story would go, and when the witch sacrifices him to the giant, the characters are left to fend for themselves, and that is how most of the destruction in the second act really happens.
The second one is Rapunzel's death. In the musical Rapunzel is crushed by the giant, and it leads to Witch's Lament:
"This is the world I meant. / Couldn't you listen? / Couldn't you stay content, safe behind walls / As I could not?"
An important thing to note is while yes her relationship with Rapunzel is definitely toxic, there's a complexity that arises out of her over sheltering Rapunzel to protect her, and then as a result she comes to despise that "shelter", and is then ultimately killed. The fact that she is grieving the loss of her daughter plays largely into her character in the second act, something that is entirely lacking in the movie. SO MANY OF HER LINES get undermined by this one detail, that Rapunzel never died, and that she was wrong the whole time.
Lastly, songs that were cut. There are four main ones that are important to talk about.
First, Maybe They're Magic. It's sung right after the Baker and his wife sell the beans to get the cow. It's the first time the question of whether or not they'll really have to lie and possibly steal to obtain the items, and what the ethics of it really are, arises. It also exemplifies the character of the Baker's Wife, and her more clever side, which we further see when she obtains her items mostly through either deceit or persuasion. This glimpse into her character helps set her up for 'Moments in the Woods', a song much later which also expresses her inner thoughts.
Two: Ever After/Prologue: So Happy. This is how the show ends its first act and begins the second. In the movie the events in the second act occur immediately after the wedding, while in the musical there is a time gap between the acts. The music is referenced in the instrumental track, but it's never actually sung. Although the songs are definitely very much suited for a theatrical performance, cutting both the songs means that the resulting events that occur within them have to be shuffled and rearranged. The way that the characters make their way into the woods changes, and the prince and Rapunzel run off together much later, which doesn't allow for their later scenes to ever happen in the movie. It's where the cracks in the movie start to show, and ultimately the way the decisions made for earlier parts snowballs into the later parts of the movie.
Three: Agony Reprise. Agony as a song is famous from both the movie and the show. However the reprise happens in the second act, when it turns out the two princes are not focused on the giant, but in fact on another maiden somewhere else, much like how they were in the first act. Except now they're married. Removing this song is basically like telling a joke without the punchline. Yes, Agony by itself is funny, but it's the perfect setup for its reprise. As the plot stood in the movie, it's clear why it couldn't be put in, but,,,like that's the problem. That's the whole problem
Finally: No More. This song is the one I'm most mad that they cut out. It's the final interaction the Baker has with his father, just after he runs away leaving his baby son with Cinderella. The movie,,,,badly paraphrases it, and then cuts to the Baker,,,,,crying? There's no actual emotional development, no actual introspection, and it removes one of the best written scenes in the show.
"Where are we to go?
Where are we ever to go?
Running away—we'll do it
Why sit around, resigned?
Trouble is, son
The farther you run
The more you feel undefined.
For what you left undone,
And more, what you left behind"
I implore you, watch this scene, if nothing else. It's a work of art, and the fact that it's completely cut out is a crime.
Pretty much every character in the movie became a duller and flatter version of their original, but the most egregious examples are Jack and his mother. Jack is older in the show, significantly so. He's basically in his late teens, and is sweet and naive, but not particularly bright. In the movie, however, he's,,,,a child. Like just straight up a child, and now his personality is no longer "too ungrounded for his age" but instead it's exactly how a child his age might act. Conversely, Jack's mother is overbearing, but ultimately 'stern but sweet', and is much more gentle with Jack than in the movie. In the movie though, she's mean and almost callous towards Jack, in a way that doesn't make her an enjoyable character.
I won't blame the actors for most of this. Yes, a point can be made that some of the acting itself may have been bad, but most of the fault in what I've talked about goes to the directors and script writers.
In every adaptation, choices need to be made. Since this was no longer a theatrical performance, liberties had to be taken to fit it into a film format. But each choice has a consequence, and their choices to change parts of the story snowballed into the climax of the movie, making it almost entirely different from the musical.
We talk about Into The Woods as a Sondheim show, but it is just as much a show by Lapine as it is by Sondheim. Lapine's ability to craft a story with strong and clear themes, no matter how complex or abstract the plot is, is one of the show's greatest assets. The movie was a disservice to original stage musical, but most of all it was a disservice to Lapine, taking his carefully crafted story and muddling and twisting it, until the end product had killed the central spirit of the original.

Ok, I didn't want to post this at first. But seeing James feeling that he has to apologize to the annoying selfish crowd makes me mad and I need to vent...
Tumblr media
Of course xitter and IG folks are as obnoxious and spiteful as always. I expected some snide stupid comments but didn't expect that it's boiling up to so much ignorance and negativity, despite how transparent, nice and understandable the situation and statements of James, Net and Domundi are??? Heck, even one of his fan translator accounts I followed WHO TRANSLATED his statements is going mimimimimi 🙄 (girl you literally translated what he said and yet you don't understand??)
Before I go into the rant, I want to clarify that there are a lot who support and respect him under his posts. And his friends and family support him too. So it's not all bad but still:
The audacity and distortion of some peoples minds to either make fun of him now, want to see him fail, accusing him of getting into straight roles now in a heavy implicatory tone... (1. don't assume someone's sexuality 2. stop believing every BL actor is cishet 3. he's one of the more direct and open LGBTq allies among BL actors since the start of his acting career 4. I understand EVERY BL actor who turns his back on this industry with fans like these) Or to think they can demand him to just do one last drama just for fans pleasures sake (that would take MONTHS of work???). Imagine someone says they are unhappy and want to leave and you say "no, stay one year longer unhappy for my personal entertainment". Or demand for him to give even more personal details of the reasons why he steps back because apparently him being unhappy and has different goals in life isn't reason enough (he's not even quitting, he just shifts focus on other things!).
Aren't James, Nets and Domundis statements enough on this matter? He even made it extra clear that they (especially he and Net) parted on good terms, just have different goals and opinions in life which they accept for each other! They are still supportive friends to eo. James was not really happy anymore with the situation / workload / job and rather wants to focus on his other dreams and passion that bring him more joy!
And ya know I can guess another reason. One that always makes me a bit worried about him. You don't need to be a psychologist to add 1+1 here (if you don't lack complete empathy):
Those who follow him a bit closer (meaning: watch his interviews and not just the ship / drama related parts, follow his social media stuff, watch his live streams), know that he's a very genuine, deep thinking and sensitive person. From what he publicly shows, tells and lets out in his artwork (which is not happy art + here some of his thoughts + his fashion motives aren't all happy either). He already has horrible experiences from being bullied in school back then, where even teachers didn't help him (his family supported him tho). He once dropped during a live stream that he's "not always happy" and that's why he sometimes asks fans to encourage him. Under his top 5 fav books he recommended, are 4 self-help mental health type books for how to deal with toxic people, self-worth strengthening and mental recovering. (the other one is about flower meanings). He wanted to act as Uea in Bed Friend because he can relate to him, and wanted to tell people through him that it's ok to get help if you struggle and experience bad shit (like him getting bullied for his appearance back then).
I am not saying that he's constantly depressed. He seems more like someone who's fighting it and recovered from bad phases. But there are already cracks, so to say. But he seems to have a good support system with his fam and friends.
But he's struggling with haters / toxic fans since months (+ now even more). THAT worries me. That shit can get even to the most mental stable person. He said he tries to block and ignore them but it still gets to him every time he sees bad comments during live streams. I don't watch all his lives but I still witnessed it 3 times that he had to ask people to be respectful to him. Which I love seeing him standing up for himself and setting boundaries. But I can imagine that things like that are another factor for him to make a cut now.
That he injured his leg a few days ago surely just made that process go faster than planned. Like idk know why people still ponder why he didn't at least finish one last drama... Like are yall blind???? 15 stitches, he's on pain meds and is walking on crutches atm!

It might not be that bad of an injury (as he says) but he's in pain and has to rest for a while now. And before that he was part of Domundis concert (+ training for that!) and fan meeting in Korea. What's not clicking? .... when was he supposed to shoot a whole drama between that as a goodbye? (despite he's maybe in Zomvivor still, since that already started with shooting)
.....
And if you look at his drawings and his thoughts you might notice that him working in this, sometimes quiet shallow, industry seems a bit contradictive. That's why I already expected him to not stay forever in this industry. I just didn't expect him to step back so soon. Hey, I am a bit sad too, to see NetJames separate and James going a different slight way now. But I respect that a lot, that he knows when to say stop and pulls through with it. Now if only people could stop making him feel guilty over it.... It's his life and dreams. He doesn't owe the public anything. We can all be grateful that he shared parts of himself and his work for almost 3 years now? Despite he never really wanted to go into acting. But now that he made it here he's not even leave, he just wants to do other things as well 🤷‍♂️
btw his recent drawing from yesterday
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His last IG story is him playing video games with a friend. So he's doing oke. It just annoys me how some "fans" react, they are not different from his haters. They behave like he is their possession and personally betrayed them.

Discovered the Ace Couple podcast because of their Somerton episode and I'm sitting here listening to them trying to work out what lust is and whether it implies directed attraction
Senpais, 'lust' is just a scam by the Church to sell purity culture. Accidentally staring at someone conventionally attractiv is lustful. Random bones ar lustful.

SALTBURN AS PORTALS ( melanie martinez ) SONGS
a/n | just a fun little rant and analysis of how specific songs on the album represent a character, their actions or emotions that I believe fit how I saw them within the movie. also i've never done a character analysis before so i will try to make my ideas clear for those of you who would like to read them.
a/n | also sorry if i repeat my points lol.
saltburn spoilers below
CHARACTERS
Oliver Quick - Tunnel Vison
yeah, you can look, but you can’t touch / i’m not just anybody
not the first thing i want to get into but i will be going through the songs line by line so here goes…
to start is the obvious ‘hands off’ rule that we find out is bestowed upon all of Felix’s ‘toys’ that he has brought out to Saltburn. Vague mentions of previous friends from Venetia, the hovering eyes of Farleigh for Oliver’s next slip-up and the instant anger Felix gets at Oliver for not understanding that he wasn’t for the other and just supposed to entertain him.
it was clear that the family seemed to be fascinated with him the same way people would at a zoo or an art museum, staring at the priceless treasures from a distance and never to get as close to them as a handler would
eyes on the prize,…that’s your demise, yeah, you hold me like you’re rushing to my thighs
Oliver’s weird sexual tension with Felix throughout the movie due to that white savior complex
his way in right from the start was Felix’s need to fix him; that power in knowing that he could make him happier than whatever Oliver had now.
honeysuckle and fresh meat / but i’m more than that
the Cattons never saw Oliver to be on their level. Oliver was always told who he was and how to act from the family so much so that they believed his innocent act up until their final moments. he easily weaved himself into a core front of the family in a matter of days really showing that he wasn’t to be underestimated…
playing house to distract me / but you’re no good at acting
thinking back to the scene where Felix is talking to Oliver and Oli mentions that his family has problems and Felix instant shift of posture and interest is such a dead give away
i mean it took Oliver one bat of an eye lash and a smile to find out each individual family member’s deepest darkest secrets and twist them into a control point for his own game.
seeing that at it’s core, the Cattons weren’t anything but forced smiles and money bags of a picture perfect family. such an old money move.
i make them tumble down the hill they climbed / i don’t regret it
using the family to slowly climb up the ranks and then getting rid of them one by one just so he could have it all to himself.
king of the hill moment
show me how far obsession goes / could have been more now we’ll never know
in the end, i am a firm believer that if Felix listened and forgave him then Oliver wouldn’t have given him the poisoned glass.
if he had mentioned that they were still friends but he needed some time to think, Oli would have definitely poured out the glass and un-pretend to be wasted out if his mind to have a better conversation and 'fix' things.
but anyway, Oliver spilling his guts to Felix and still not having that wholehearted love reciprocated really did a number on him which led to the killing no doubt. what they could have had together in the end was only left for one.
i saw a post on here earlier might link if i find it but it was something like “oliver having sex above his grave because he couldn’t ever do anything with Felix unless there was a distance between them” and i couldn’t agree more!
Felix Catton - Spider Web
flexing like pricks with their stolen power / they're just who the spider will eat
not that Felix was flaunting his wealth or his social status, but that was what made him a target to Oliver as well as his desperate need to 'help' him get away from what he thought was his hectic lifestyle
he was gullible enough to believe everything he was told over his own family countless times, and even after finding out the lies he still chose to hide the truth because he didn't want to be seen in a different light to his family.
thinking about that line "you’re kind about everyone, you can't be trusted." so heavily right now.
didn't ask for this dangerous visibility / i'm feeling too scared to sleep
the moment when Oliver spills his guts and tells Felix he did it all just for him. made himself into this character just so that he could get close to him and secure his spot within his life as a friend.
it left Felix visibly staggered as he thinks about everyone else who could have done the same; everyone else he's left high and dry for his attention and the possible lengths they went through to try and get it back in his past.
better off dead than stuck in a maze / the center may seem like a gift
Felix having sex in the maze believing no one would find him there because its a place he knows like the back of his own hand. however, Oliver's interruption makes it known that he is more exposed than he thought.
also to me his death being at the center of the maze and him being the dead center of the family as they all mourn him with such vigor and slowly lose their minds really gets to me.
up all night, bound to their addiction to it / lifeless eyes, they die in the pit of the spider web
Felix's premature death being the root to how Oliver get his 'in'. he was the hub of the web and after his death is when everything truly spiraled into chaos and one by one his family followed him to the grave.
Elspeth Catton - Leeches
leeches surrounded, conscience is throbbing
Elspeth my love you dissevered only happiness.
i think we could all agree that the wealth came from her as well as the family’s popularity due to her younger years in life with her career
Elspeth, as we come to find out, has met many influential individuals throughout her life as well as the free loaders.
we hear about the numerous people that have come to Elspeth for favors and help in their troubled time, that really only used her kindness to get into a life of luxury. ( not including pamela )
although it is draining for her, she never openly complains about how helping is a bother for her building up the exhaustion until someone else brings it up.
let all their friends in, the enemy's present
Felix gets his kindness from his mother’s side obviously, thats clear in how she is so inviting with Pamela and Oliver regardless of their circumstances.
i cannot stress enough how i feel like she would have ket Pamela at Saltburn if nothing was whispered to her about how ‘awful’ Pamela was.
she was drawn into the direction of who was the problem in the eyes of others but never her own. thinking about the dinner table scene after finding Felix’s dead body n how Farleigh called out to her to save him instead of pleading his case. he knows she would have saved him like she has before.
how much blood can you draw / with your claws from a flesh that's not yours? / my hands aren't yours, and / gnaw on my bones, no marrow left
honestly hate how Oliver played the long game with her
he found out her routine after Sir James’ death, stalked her, gave her a false sense of home after losing her entire family by his hands and then killed her off and stole all her wealth.
i believe she had the most tragic death and if you want to debate on the argument of ‘innocence,’ she really displayed no evils.
Venetia - Womb
oh the rant im about to do
a seed in mother and I chose that space for me / little does she know it's free, ooh, yeah
the moment i saw her on screen i just knew she had some sort of issue with her mother and boy was i so on the spot
its vague when Elspeth mentions it so i could be completely wrong but i believe Venetia ( and Felix ) was raised by her grandparent ( “my mother always said born masochist” )
i felt that Venetia has wanted to get a rise out of her mother with her sexual activities because she was never given that parental figure she wanted. never been disciplined the way she should’ve as a child or told good from bad.
how Elspeth just dumps out all Venetia’s dirty laundry the moment she meets Oliver and doesn’t seem to care that she’s flaunting herself to a complete stranger. almost encourages it!
its no wonder she’s so close with her brother because he’s shown true spine with her
and I know my brother / he'll make the journey later on / conversations in the cosmos, yeah
if you didnt pick up on the incestuous relationship between Felix n Venetia i don’t believe we watched the same movie.
a lot of what im saying is up for debate but i know that their parents took trips frequently. the casual mention of going to London for Pamela’s funeral was all by chance and if Elspeth hadn't said anything they would have left without a word, and seeing how okay with it Venetia and Felix were gave me so many thought on them.
just being stuck in all of Saltburn by themselves just free to do with the wealth and the space as they please alone together
for years it must have always been them, maybe Farleigh was there on occasion but most of the time its been them.
and i can see with Felix it’s beyond protective brother. no he’s made claim to Venetia the same way he’s done for Oliver and all his past friends.
“i’m used to it, honestly. he never liked sharing his toys. even the ones he doesn’t want to play with anymore.” oh im so sick
at first i had thought Oliver was replaced again but she was referring to herself in this moment and that did it for me.
Felix claiming his own sister for himself, she doesn’t need another males approval because Felix is all she has depended on for her every need why should she stop now even if he doesn't think of her in that way anymore?
why should she go for another when he’s still here? why go through that pain when he’s only ever showed her real happiness?
no one could ever be as impactful as him in her life and whenever someone gets close he cuts them off. i’m gonna climb the walls
feeling alive, the closer that I get to my life / i’m pushing out the center, the core / i’m sweating through the flower no more, no more
Venetia finding her control and power through the means of her own body is sickening to me.
like openly saying how she got molested and her own mother making a joke out of it and offering her to a stranger im so sick and furious right now.
sex being the only way she’s noticed, the only way people will listen to her the way she wants instead of being seen like some fragile beauty like her mother
all of the planning, yet I still feel unprepared / kick and screaming 'cause I'm scared, ooh, yeah
sorry to bring it back to the incest but my god you cannot tell me she doesn’t get at all Felix’s closet friends for the giggles
Venetia is sickeningly scared of losing the one person in the house she’s emotional intertwined to so of course she interjects herself into his relationships the only way she knows how — and it works every time.
getting with all of Felix's best friends to spend more time with Felix as the lover of his closest friends this girl was obsessed
she knows he’ll get mad and she knows she’ll get that parental chiding from Felix but he will never cut her off the way he does his friends because they only have each other in end.
the intimacy between them tells a story only woven by having to embrace one another on a different level then just siblings. they were naked in front of each other sunbathing unabashed like a regular tuesday for fucks sake.
and I know she suffers contractions of hell and death / eyes are bloody screaming out, ooh, yeah
thinking about her final moments with this
bathing in Felix’s bath tub, soaking in his soap, smelling his aftershave on Oliver’s face like second nature, seeing his clothes on another man and feeling so disgusted and yet its so inviting.
she kisses Oliver in the heat of the moment not because its him but because if she closes her eyes and forget for just a moment it would have been Felix.
but of course its not enough and its not the same as having him there alive so she chooses.
a life on earth that's a living hell without the man that makes her whole or to be reunited with him in death. she chose the latter.
Farleigh - Void
it's tastin' kinda lonely / and my mind wants to control me
the self-preserving outcast of the Cattons.
its clear in the script and Archie did such a wonderful portrayal of his emotions because that boy Farleigh was really there for himself.
he had his own back from the get go
he’d be present within all conversation but at the same time watching everyone, pinpoint each and every shift in the pecking order and making sure he doesn’t leave his place in the middle of it all.
no one here but me to judge me
whether it ever was a race thing or if it was just a status thing, Farleigh knew of his own worth and because of it he knew the other couldn’t ever understand him no matter how much explaining would need to be done
then comes in Oliver, the outcast with a need for a approval that he knows will overshadow his own
honestly i never thought he hated him per se, but he knew of his intentions from the start he just underestimated how low Oliver would go to maintain his own position
i’m tryin' to find the doorway / my eyes are starin' at me / and they seem so damn unhappy
his family struggles and pride being his greatest turmoil of all in the movie
seeing how easily the Cattons give away their wealth to complete strangers over their own bloodline must not have been easy, especially having to go and beg for it.
i believe he wanted a way out of it, to find some way to rely on himself to support his side of the family but that wasn’t something be could have easily obtained so the Cattons were his only real option.
pipe down with the noise, i cannot bear my sorrow
Farleigh being the first to notice Oliver for who he is the night of the death and the morning following hurt me so much
if he had more of a backbone to press into Felix and the rest of the family that this nobody can’t get close to them i feel like things would have been so different.
Felix was a family matter, Oliver’s presences wasn’t a needed one especially only having known him for a single term. it was just invading
in that moment of sadness is when it clicked for Farleigh, if not that Oli was the root of the problems at Slatburn he had to be a factor in them
but do to his own emotions he couldn’t find the right way to expose it.
look at the mess i've done, there is nowhere to run, yeah / holdin' a loaded gun, the void
Oliver outing Farleigh in the end to ensure that he was dealt with in his plan. i’m furious
not that anything he was doing the night of the party was right but he wasn’t the only one
the maids scrubbing cocaine from the toilets and tables highlights that plus Venetia and Felix were there too but Farleigh was only trying to fit in and keep his place in the close circle so he joins them. if he were reluctant to or chicken out then he wouldn’t be a toy anymore and that looming pressure of loosing his funding was already enough to keep him chained to them.
but it was never something he could have denied or challenged especially with his history so he had no choice but to leave all his life and behind and get replaced by a nobody.
Sir James - Battle of the Larynx
explained within duo expression.
Pamela - The Contortionist
twisted all my limbs for you / two of them in knots and two of them in loops
poor dear Pamela
she was the only normal person in the entire film with no grudge on anyone or ill intent. literally just need a place to stay to get back on her feet and that is what the Cattons offered but because she wasn't interesting enough to entertain them they tossed her away.
asking her to fetch a made as soon as Oliver enters as an excuse to get her to leave so the conversation could shift onto her
you can tell 'em what you wanted to
Pamela didn't live a life of lavish obviously by her proper nature ( the same persona Oliver pretended to play except you know a genuine one ) so of course the others treated her as entertainment.
Farleigh and Elspeth saying her looks were her only point just a dull flower in bloom
also Elspeth's comment about how she dropping so many hints before it goes so far really bugged me
like the only time they pressed for her to leave was at the dinner when she brought up having found a place and even then it was a half assed 'oh we'll miss you so much'
twisting all my bones like screws / stretching my self-worth, just like you usually do
i think Pamela thought of Elspeth as a friend helping out
then she's suddenly thrusted out of the house without notice, bags already packed and cab fare paid as if her new arrangements had been already settled.
i cannot begin to understand how hurt she might have been in that moment and what could have been the core drive for her suicide but her death really hurt me the most.
DUO EXSPRESSIONS
Oliver & Ventia / Elspeth - Faerie Soiree
mushrooms everywhere i'm turning / laced with love, intensive grooving / they said, they sail / i know how to make you go crazy every day
the spell he casted on both Elspeth and Venetia
had both woman hooked on him trying to draw that hidden side he only expressed to them in secret.
the Oliver that got Venetia to eat again. the Oliver that had Elsepth stunned at his forwardness and thinking of him even after the incident. the Oliver that would have had Farleigh under his thumb if he hadn't went for the kill so soon.
led me astray to the faerie soirée / alone, alone / now i wanna ride with the magic / lose sight of the gravity of home
he was a welcomed distraction to both of them. a change that they hadn't thought would be influential as he was.
given them both an individual false hope - for Venetia it was a man who showed initiative if only for a moment that could toy with her instead of the other way around; for Elspeth it was familiarity he would give her some sort of normal in the now hollow halls of Saltburn.
it is such a shame both couldn't see past the fantasy until it was too late.
Oliver & Ventia - Moon Cycle
...do I really need to explain?
But in all seriousness,
he bit the cherry down, he's delirious / seeing red figures in his mirrors and / acting like a real tough, furious
giving her a outlet for her parental issues
the first man in a while that showed her dominance in a way that had her changing her whole routine
he says he doesn't care, that he's into this / it happens every time the new season hits
Venetia thought Oliver would be different than Felix's other toys that come to Saltburn, but was disappointed once again.
now he kissing on the ground that i walk on / tryna get another taste, but I'm all cramped up
her dumping him right after Felix found out ( thinking Felix had a private conversation with her ) he was eager to fic things but she wasn't going to play a game with another coward of a man.
juice melting like raspberry pomegranate / it's so scary
" no, i wanted to look at the moon. it's nearly full. do you know what that means? " | " we're all about to lose our minds. "
oh the foreshadowing. Venetia you are too powerful
seeing that version of Oliver ( the one who had her delirious ) the day of the incident. piecing together everything in the end ( you disgusting little nobody. oh my god. you ate him right up. and licked the fucking plate. ) leaving her shocked and broken over what she's done. how close she got close to the cause of it all. frightened by everything
Sir James & Elspeth - Battle of the Larynx
i speak in cursive, i'm poignant, assertive / there's musical chairs in my teeth
Sir ' what i say must be the truth always ' James
thinking about how nothing happens unless he approves. how every order and command that was ever given had went through him first if it wasn't his command to begin with
deciding that Pamela needed to leave, lowering the amount Farleigh's mom gets, cutting Farleigh off after finding out about the drugs, bribing Oliver because he needed normalcy again
and it was all enforced with such urgency too, no question to any of it like he was a general to his soldiers
don't you battle with my larynx tonight / i'll wreck you if you chase me / but i'll be silent 'til you cross the line
Sir James had minimal lines within the movie but whenever he did it held authority.
when something wasn't going the right way he'll interject ( insisting to Pamela at the dinner table that her time was due ) other than that he was silent until called upon
and they talk without thinking / they bark while they're shaking / with teeth that are round and dull
he was the controlling factor within the family and to Elspeth
he knew what was best for her all the time, he knew what she needed all the time, he knew just what to say to get her to listen all the time
i will die on this hill. Elspeth would have let Pamela stay longer if he hadn't said anything to her and she probably would have overlooked Farleigh doing drugs the day of the party if Sir James didn't fight it.
but anyway, James wasn't someone that Oliver could have manipulated, not like the rest of the family so he had to buy time until his death which he got lucky for.
Saltburn would have been unattainable if Sir James hadn't passed really.
Farleigh & Oliver - EVIL
and it felt like bliss, used to miss your kiss / now i'm hop-skip jumpin' over narcissists / ... / now the role is reversed and told you i'ma switch / how you like my spit?
they should have fucked on screen at least four more times your honor
their back and forth. cat and mouse. push and pull. the tension of fighting for the center spot of attention for the family and fucking for dominance would have done it for me
but Oliver had to fuck that up with the email. he could have really controlled Farleigh, lulled him into thinking they should work together for what they want and then hung him out to dry but no Oliver was greedy
the panic in Oliver's eyes though when Farleigh admits to being invited to the party after he thought he got rid of him was priceless
just one foiled seduction after another with him
everything i expressed, i professed / it never quite made it through / ... / no, i won't defend you to all my friends / this time, i refuse
the quips at Oliver's pride. the mentions of getting bored and tossed aside. stating his claim on Saltburn and rubbing it in his face on his birthday. Farleigh played the game well even if he lost it in the end.
if you bite my hand again / i will never feed you, you can call me evil / take it to the grave if you wanna play pretend / i won't be mistreated, please call me conceited
Oliver finding out about Farleigh's private life and family issues and Farleigh's retaliation at karaoke with "rent".
Oliver pointing out their in the same boat offering the mic and how easily Farleigh accepts the mic just like how easily he accepts his role.
shows their difference in it really; Farleigh takes it as it is, he knows what his life has become and what could happen if it ends. and yet Oliver still saw himself as something more to the Cattons and especially Felix.
Farleigh & Ventia - Powder
don't wanna know where you go when you aren't around / i'd rather stay naive, too much to believe
it's past point of no return, when will we learn? / alert me when this shit is over
the acceptance they both have to face in the end. Farleigh in knowing he's been bested and that all his wealth is gone. Venetia seeing how Oliver got to consume her own brother's identity whole and take what was most precious to her.
show me a picture you paint of someone else / lived a double life, wish i was surprised
eyes rollin' back to your head, and i'm wonderin' how / i recognize your face, put it all to waste
will never be the same again knowing that these two died seeing the truth. all the fight was stripped from them piece and left vulnerable to the emotional pain Oliver put them through.
THE CAUSE AND EFFECT
Felix to Everyone - Nymphology
call me your nymph / praise me for martyr, praise me for sin / call me your muse / a sprite or an elf you cry to, then use
Felix was everything to everyone. he could do no wrong as he was the pinnacle; forced on a pedestal he never fought for or against.
everyone wanted Felix. be it to brag about the sex, to have the money or to just let it be known that they were in his circle.
and he lived it up.
he knew the power he had on people and used it how he pleased. ditching his hookups when he got bored, cutting ties with friends that weren't of interest to his close circle anymore.
he knew of the people's infatuation, but no one ever dared to over step a boundary in fear of angering their chosen so he lived like he was untouchable. believed he was on another level to all and got so full of himself he couldn't see the signs of wandering hands getting closer and closer to the unattainable.
i'm not crazy, i'm not wild, you're just stupid, little child / get your image off my back, i'll give you a heart attack
Oliver wanted Felix in both body and mind. the devotion he forced onto Felix, begging and pleading to be his henchman again after being found out.
Felix wanted none of it, the first time ever seeing someone want him on a level of desperate he's never seen and feeling revolted
but Oliver tells it to him the way no one else could, because that is his life. people treat him like a king on his throne and approach in a line offering whatever they can to get his approval. locked in the maze with no guards he was left to see it all as it is.
Oliver to Felix - Pluto / Light Shower but will not elaborate
I think that it's finally time pluto, destroy me / kill me off slowly / i'll bathe in my ashes / rise like a phoenix / show me who I am becoming
Felix bringing Oliver to the point of no return.
cutting him off with dignity for the sake of the family not knowing he made a mistake in judgement.
Oliver not being able to handle being seen, cannot cope with knowing that his infatuation sees his true colors
pluto, transform me / turn off my lonely / i'll sit with my silence / fix all my conflict / show me the demons I'm hiding
yet at the same time, he's free.
he has had his fill of Felix - his fill of the Cattons - whether he wanted to believe it or not.
he had gotten closer than his plan had assigned, so close he's hurt by his own action. crying and fucking his grave as one last show of his 'love' left soaking in the muck.
moving on with no regrets to the next phase of the plan.
Oliver to the Cattons - Milk of the Siren
strangle the fear of deciding / which one's deserving to drown
the montage at the end
Oliver's plan unfolding the moment he laid eyes on Felix. how he watched and waited, studied what would have made him noticeable. Found out his class schedule and he sabotaged his bike, weaved a lie so great that when it was found out he had to die.
tired of silence and being polite / your legs turn to shimmering scales in the night
Oliver hunting the Cattons in the evening. whispers to Elsepth, the peeping tom moments with Felix, following Venetia, fucking Farleigh.
all of it under the moons watchful eye.
don't feel bad when these fuckers all drown / let them drown / let them drown / let them drown
" and you made it so easy. spoiled dogs sleeping belly-up." | " no natural predators. " | " well... almost none. "
nothing wrong with a little havoc (drink from the leche of sirens) / it's fun when shit hits the fan
all the side notes in the script. ( he looks up to see Duncan’s silhouette staring down at him from the hill above. he can deal with that later. )
he had fun toying with them all and becoming the new king. putting all their wealth to a better use than he thought they could.
