The fact that in his introductory book he is just trying his best to do his work, but keeps ruining his own chances because he can't control his emotions properly hit a lot closer to home than I needed it to.

And since the big engines don't take him seriously because of this, he feels even more self-conscious and excluded than he already did. Is it any wonder why he latched onto that red paint? Why he has such an issue with vanity? One thing I don't like about the RWS is that James never gets any proper development (at least in the Rev's books).

The fact of the matter is that James really is a genuine character! His blurbs always say what a warm, charming character he is. I just wish we got to see James progress past his vanity so we could see that more.
