2022 Ace Community Survey!

It’s that time of year again - we are now recruiting participants for the Ace Community Survey!

The Ace Community Survey, run by the Ace Community Survey Team, collects valuable information on the demographics and experiences of members in the ace community, including asexual, demisexual, gray-asexual, and related identities. It is the largest survey of ace communities and creates a valuable pool of data for future ace community activists and researchers.

The survey is open to anyone: ace, non-ace, or still questioning. As long as you are 13 years of age or older, we want to hear from you! We want to get a wide variety of responses from as many parts of the community as possible, so we encourage you to share this link with any other potentially interested individuals you know or any ace communities you participate in.

What the fuck even is sexual attraction. Like what am i even trying to parce here. Has the one singular event of ‘wow i might be attracted to this person actually’ ive experienced been genuine sexual attraction or am i just being emotionally attached to my close friends again. Like how many times do i have to think that about this person before it starts tipping into probably being true

I understand that human experience does not fit into neatly divided boxes and i get that its a good thing but it would be soooo much fucking easier if i could just read a checklist and get told if im ace or gray or demi or whatever the fuck is going on with this whole mess

Its been literal years. The entirety of figuring out where i am in regards of gender and romantic shit took mere months, and its been over three FUCKING years. Simply is not fair

The worst part is im not comfortable with just slapping an ‘acespec’ on there and going, no, because i dont care about the actual label, i just want to understand how my own fucking emotions work >:/

Catch me desperately clinging to ‘non-sam aro’ like a lifeline so i dont have to figure out how my sexuality works ever

My friend, who I was working with last week, is really lovely, but absolutely hopeless with pronouns. Because we've known each other so long he struggles to see me as anything but male and he seemed surprised that most people now see me as a woman. Though he always gets my name right, he constantly referred to me as 'he' last time we worked together — much to our customers' confusion, because most of them instinctively referred to me as 'she'! One customer who I had met a few times before didn't even recognise me and thought I was a cis woman! Massive gender euphoria.

“Oh, this is new,” the succubus said, tilting their head. Their perfect face gleamed with a demented, inhuman interest. “You see, usually, you humans are putty in my hands. And I’ve encountered a few who are immune to me. But you . . . you’re something different.” A smile snaked on their lips. “You’re struggling.”

The protagonist pressed back against the kitchen shelf – eyes wide, limbs trembling. They were not leaping into the succubus’s arms, but they couldn’t run for the door either. Some innate force was holding them back.

They’d been questioning lately, if they were grey-ace. What a hell of a way to have it confirmed.

“Come on, sweetness.” The succubus waltzed closer. “Just give in to me. You know you want to.” Their eyes were a gorgeous sky-after-sunset purple. The protagonist’s favorite color.

They had watched their friends fall, one after the other, to these monsters. None of them had even been able to put up a fight. And, now that the protagonist was cornered, they understood. Even with this newfound layer of protection, it was hard to look anywhere but those eyes.

They tried, fingers straining, to reach for the clay sugar jar on the shelf.

Two years ago, the succubi hordes had descended upon the world. Grotesque monsters hidden beneath a beautiful veneer, they seduced humans to breed their demonic offspring, or otherwise just to eat people’s souls. But really, they could do anything they wanted with the people under their control.

Including force them to reveal the location of the other survivors.

The succubus was right in front of them, now. “I’ll make it good for you, promise. Gentle.” They grinned. “Or rough. However you like.” They put a hand on the protagonist’s arm, making them half shiver, half flinch. “Just tell me where that human colony of yours is, and you can have all of me.”

“F-fuck,” it was hard to get the words out, “a cactus.”

The succubus grabbed the back of the protagonist’s head, and rammed their faces together in a kiss.

The protagonist’s mind flashed white, and for a second, they were sure they were gone.

Then they smashed the jar against the succubus’s head.

Still reeling, they tripped and stumbled over the creature’s body, and fled off into the wilderness.

A/N -- It’s kinda hard to write about succubi in a gender neutral way, since, in the mythology, succubi are female and incubi are male. It seems a little silly to me to make this distinction, especially when a lot of the lore basically portrays them as genderfluid shape-shifters. So, even though I used the gendered word “succubus” here, picture the character however you’d like

it’s Copperleaf aka Filou and Dawncloud of ShadowClan!

in Burning Thistles, Copperpaw first meets Dawnpaw when she accidentally crosses the border. he notices she seems very young, and is also very nervous, and jokingly crosses over to the ShadowClan side to make her feel better. the next time they meet is at the following Gathering... where he learns she is already a warrior named Dawncloud with a mate that she doesn’t seem very happy about- Finchflight. Copperpaw, knowing how his own parents were, is determined to get to the bottom of this and save Dawncloud and her unborn kits from Brokenstar’s reign and Finchflight’s predatory gaze.

Copperpaw, soon to be Copperleaf, one could say either has a very pure heart or a hero complex, or a bit of both. he’s very much family orientated and has the biggest weakness for kits, spending much of his time in the nursery. as a kit and apprentice, he dreamed of being a hard-working warrior of his clan with a nice little family, and was never super ambitious past that. he never could have imagined living in ShadowClan, but now that he’s there, he’d never leave - because his family is there.

Copperleaf and Dawncloud are both best friends and mates. When speaking about each other or to each other, they happily refer to the other as their best friend, but everyone else inside and outside of their clan calls them mates, seeing as Copperleaf dotes over her as one and raised her kits as his own and proudly so. So why don’t they call each other mates?

Well, it’s not that they AREN’T mates. It’s just that they’re happy the way they are, and neither are eager to test the waters. Copperleaf would NEVER pressure Dawncloud into a relationship and Dawncloud, because of the trauma she endured at a very young age, isn’t exactly sure what being true mates entirely means, and the idea of it somehow ending up like with Finchflight (though she knows Copperleaf never would do such a thing) terrifies her. perhaps one day they’ll talk in-depth on what they are, but for now, both are just glad to have one another’s company.

Copperleaf is demisexual and panromantic/sexual. He’s never cared much for a potential partner’s gender or sex, though he can appreciate a tom for a tom and a she-cat for a she-cat. He prefers taking his time and getting to know someone before he goes further with them, though, and would be quite alright never doing anything anyway.

Dawncloud isn’t sure what she is. She’s never had a chance to ‘experiment’ or learn about herself. Groomed from a young age- far too young- she isn’t very willing to get out there either. She’s content with her friendship with Copperleaf, and doesn’t want anything else. That being said, Copperleaf does like to tease her whenever she calls a she-cat pretty or a tomcat handsome. She doesn’t know if she likes said cats past an aesthetic attraction though. She DOES know she’s graysexual, or on the aspec spectrum. Unfortunately, it’s likely less because that’s naturally who she is, and more due to trauma regarding anything sexual. She knows she can feel that attraction, but it scares her and disgusts her at times, and most times she just doesn’t feel it anyway.

What occurs to me to point out:

Most respondents endorsed or partially endorsed the "experiences [x] attraction infrequently" definition of gray identities, but most gray-asexuals and grayromantics reported "I experience something that may or may not be this, but it's unclear," and more selected "uncertainty or ambiguity" as a relevant factor to identity than "frequency."

A lot of contradictory experiences were reported in the communities section, like Julian discussed above.

There was enough commentary on anti-ace/aro blogging to give that its own section. I would expect Tumblr aces to be interested in the discussion there.

On prejudice, some respondents expressed that they see anti-gray prejudice as being distinctly different or taking a different form than anti-asexual/aromantic prejudice.

Surprisingly, a lot of aromantic asexual respondents (non-gray) reported a preference for a specific definition of sexual orientation. This runs counter to my expectation that aromantic asexuals would express more convergence.
