Okay but like ‘canon’ relationships between characters in the Pokémon games/anime are pretty weird not because they're like, bad per se, but because it's either other people telling the two characters, who up to this point haven't had any romantic interactions, that they seem like a couple, one of the characters being implied to have a crush on the other while the other(usually the player character) just... doesn't comment either way, or both. Which is weird because when it comes to CotDs, or NPCs in a relationship, they're pretty cute, and most of the canon ships would work better as friendships(penguin, amour, heartsoul, fortune, etc.)

I, for one, would've either preferred no romantic subplots(espicially for the main characters), or a romantic subplot where they're both into each other.

Mainseries Pokemon characters who can be argued to be bisexual-coded (due to their implied crush on the player)

1. Shauna (Pokemon X and Y)

Kalos takes place in France, and Paris is the city of love. So, in the words of Junichi Masuda, "I wanted to implement some elements of romance with Shauna when playing as a boy and express a deep friendship when playing as a girl."

However, due to the VERY few dialogue changes between female vs male protags (as well as actions Shauna takes that are intended to imply romantic interest being the same across all player types, such as her staying behind with the player in the early-game forest), this can be argued to be unintentional bisexual-coding.

2. Lillie (Pokemon Sun and Moon)

Lillie is implied to have a crush on the player. When the player character is female, on Exeggutor Island, she says, "I want to become a Trainer, and learn all the things you know, Selene..." When the player character is male, she says, "I think... I'd like to become a Trainer, too. And travel together with you, Elio..."

Obviously, the difference between these two dialogues makes it pretty clear that they want her dialogue with Elio to be interpreted as more romantically-inclined. However, much like Shauna, Lillie's actions and dialogue varying VERY little otherwise between female vs male protags can be read as unintentional bisexual-coding.

3. Kieran

Kieran is the first character here to receive absolutely zero dialogue changes across player gender. Additionally, I'd say he's the character that we get the strongest hints regarding romantic feelings towards the player with.

Kieran has multiple moments where he's implied to feel romantically towards the player. These include, but are not limited to:

His sister saying that he's "been all googly-eyed over you" since you met, and that he "wouldn't stop talking about you - even at home. I seriously couldn't get him to shut up." Kieran reacts with embarrassment when she says this to the MC.

Him saying, "You're...you're special," before pausing, then getting embarrassed and rushing to change the subject.

When the MC calls him a friend, he responds, "What?! R-really?! We're friends? F-friends... I feel all tingly and funny hearing that... Ehehe..."

After the MC changes into their festival outfit, Kieran says, "Whoa...", when seeing them for the first time.

The player can even seemingly flirt with Kieran; when Kieran describes letting Ogerpon move into his home, the player can teasingly ask when they, themself, can move in with Kieran.

These are all very common romantic tropes. I think Kieran is the closest thing that we have to a canonically bisexual mainline character at this moment.

4. Carmine

Carmine has a fewer number of specific moments compared to her brother, but she can still be easily read as having feelings for the player.

Her extreme reaction to Drayton asking the player on a date is the best example, with her bringing her hands up to her face, and saying, "A wha-?!" Once Drayton leaves, Carmine continues fuming. (This can also be chalked up to her general dislike towards Drayton and how he can be manipulative, but the fact that it's that request that sets her off specifically makes this also easily read as jealousy.)

And speaking of...

5. Drayton

While, like Kieran and Carmine, Drayton doesn't have any dialogue changes between if the player is male and female, it's not really clear how he actually feels about them.

He tells the player, male or female, that they can go on a cafeteria date to talk, which the game fully acknowledges as a romantic phrase via Carmine's extreme reaction. He also tells the player, "From one charming catch to another..."

This is very obviously him flirting with the player, but, due to his laid-back and just-a-liiittle-bit-sleazy nature, this more so comes across as him trying to tease the player character, rather than anything earnest.

If nothing else, he's at least confirmed to be comfortable with romantically teasing male classmates, which I would consider a win.

the timeskip stuff focuses primarily on Selene & Lillie's married life and the people they're around and since Sun and Moon are the first gens where the alternative protag isn't in the game Elio is absent.

If timeskip elio DID exist because I HAD to include both protags out of obligation to all the people who constantly demand him from me even though he's not relevant to my work, he'd probably be Selene's cousin on her Kantonian dad's side and work a 9-5 office job in Saffron City. He'd get 5 seconds of screentime and somehow have more "X reader" fanfic written about him on AO3 than stuff featuring the main lesbian couple

With grid expansions apparently just not being a thing this month (boo, hiss), I figured I'd fill that void by speculating about possibly grid expansions for some of the Alolan 5*s.  Specifically: Lusamine, Lillie, Gladion, Guzma, Plumeria, Elio, and Selene.

SELENE Atk +20, Spd +20, Sharp Entry (3), Fleet Feet 9 (3), Crit Strike 3 (5), X Atk: Berserker 1 (5)

Selene's damage output isn't great, but her multipliers are in all the right places. Inertia, Restraining Sync Up 5, Ramming Speed.  The sad part is it's hard to acquire much outside of these few tools, with only 5 energy.  As such, we're looking more at accessibility features; things that can enhance her self-sufficiency.  Sharp Entry caps crit for Spirit Shackle, while Fleet Feet 9 is a much more reliable means of accessing the speed buffs she needs.  X Atk: Berserker lets her cap her own attack as well for Gauntlet contexts as needed.  But the consistent one, and the one that fits with her current spread, is Crit Strike 3. With this, she's able to forego anything else, and get a decent buff to move and sync damage. ELIO HP +40, Speed +20, Vigilance (5), Pinpoint Entry 1 (3), Recharging Strike 4 (5), Team Sharp Entry (3)

Elio is pretty easily solved for, but has a bitch of a time accessing it.   Vigilance is the obvious one; he needs this to reasonably compete with Melony, who is otherwise beating his ass at the Sing Support game.  You could take Troublemaker, but either way.  Pinpoint Entry 1 makes up for the lack of accuracy boosts on Sing itself.  Recharging Strike helps to solve for gauges while spamming Sparkling Aria, which has use primarily as a debuffing tool with Defense Crush and Mind Dames access.  Team Sharp Entry rounds out the set, providing just a little something extra on buff for him.  The thing is, this doesn't help much for him beyond the Sing accuracy issue, but that's legitimately enough.  Sing disruption can be devastating in its own right. GUZMA Atk +20, HP +40, Haymaker (5), Fierce Entry 4 (5), Endurance (3), Punishing Strike 2 (3)

Guzma feels easy to shop for.  Where's Haymaker?  That's an easy one to solve.  Fierce Entry 4 is chosen because dude has Burst In, and First Impression needs a lot of setup right now.  Fierce Entry gives +4 attack, so anyone with +2 is giving him everything needed for a full-power first shot.  I thought about Supreme Entry, but decided against, because one shot isn't enough and it's useless against Azelf, which is the only Gauntlet stage it would matter for.  Instead, we're going with Endurance for survival since he has Vigilance/First Aid off-tanking kinda, and Punishing Strike to potentially debuff defense per hit on No Quarter Pin Missile.  Guzma isn't easy to solve for, but I think it's at least possible. PLUMERIA +20 Sp Atk, +20 Sp Atk, Toxic Chance 4 (3), Trainer Move: Critical Eye (3), Virulent Toxin 5 (5), Mind Games 9 (5)

I feel like Mind Games is just what you slap on these specially offensive Poison types.  Plumeria gains self sufficiency with Critical Focus, and a much better chance to apply her needed Poison condition, with a 50% bonus to sync (she already has Inertia, she doesn't need much).  I think having her be "Better Lodge Steven" is also valid, with Smog functioning identically to Staggering 2 Acid, but with better rates of debuff and flinch.  Her sync is already doing great with Inertia, and just needs a bit more oomph, so we're going with Virulent Toxin given the usual pre-requisites.  Up the odds of poison, and she's good to go. Note however that I did not improve move damage.  I feel like Plumeria could use it, definitely, but also I feel like it's borderline a lost cause.  Her special attack isn't that high, and Sludge Wave has split DPS for CS purposes.  Her nuke can do well, but I feel like her attack should be for supportive effects, so I leaned into self-setup as the secondary function instead. LILLIE HP +40, Def +20, Endurance (5), First Aid 4 (4), Team Sharp Entry (5), X Accuracy All: Slippery Sidekicks (4)

Lillie's trainer move is decent, but notably lacks the ability to buff crit. Personally, I don't think it's entire worth letting her cap everything as a general pool unit, I feel like that's super coveted and not something DeNA would permit.  So, Team Sharp Entry it is.  Endurance and First Aid 4 feel like essential tools, given her general frailty as a tank.  This ensures she's able to get the job done over time. The final skill is an odd one, but I'm going with Slippery Sidekicks.  Evasion boosting for the team is rare, but can be highly valuable, and it’s not like Lillie’s 30% chance to raise either defensive stat at the cost of 20 energy is worth more than this.

GLADION Atk +20, Speed +20, Defense Crush 4 (5), Super Powered 5 (5), On a Roll 1 (3), X Atk: Berserker 1 (3)

Gladion is hilariously easy to solve for.  Defense Crush 9 lets him serve as a solid debuffer, especially with On a Roll 1 for Crush Claw.  Super Powered 5 is easily achieved given his trainer move, and is a 50% bonus to both his sync, and his main DPS.  Berserker permits easier self-setup, although crit is still an area of need.  That said, double defense drops on this level would likely be considered "too much" even though Fantina can do it with special defense, and I'm willing to sacrifice Defense Crush for something more aligned to the Vigilance tank set, like First Aid or something.

LUSAMINE +20 Sp Atk, +20 Speed, TM: Ramp Up 2 (3), Sync Power Flux (5), Sharp Entry (3), Furious Brain (5)

Lusamine is a little tougher to shop for overall.  I'm actually not thrilled with this layout, but I feel like asking for a full 100% like Haymaker or Brainpower is too much on a sync pair with such naturally strong offenses.  Going the Silver route, I think the best solution is self setup.  Ramp Up helps set up her needed offensive stat, while Sharp Entry removes the need for Trainer Move MPR.  That said, DPS isn't great either, thanks to lower BP moves and kinda shit multipliers. So I'm giving her Furious Brain as a simpler multiplier to set up, considering the sync nuke will require all four power nodes, which leaves very little energy left to her.
