Today's RWBY news made me so happy I got motivated to finish this old sketch, congrats CRWBY on managing to find potential partners to continue RWBY with!

Thinking about the "paint our nails, try and clothes, and talk about cute boys" thing setup between Weiss and Ruby in v1 and how the strongest ship baits we've gotten for both of them are:

- Jaune: who's a teenager turned into an old man from a fairytale, then back into a teenager again

And

- Oscar: a teenager who is very quickly merging with the spirit of an immortal old man who's been the subject of many fairytales in the past

Their fingers interlaced and Oscar felt his face heat up as Ruby smiled down at their hands.

"Your gloves."

"What?"

Ruby's eyes met his again and her grip seemed to tighten on his hands.

"You've got gloves like mine."

Did he? He hadn't given much thought to it. His old ones were getting a little worn and he'd thought 'why not buy a new pair?' the fact that they were fingerless, like her's, wasn't a factor.

Only, now it was a factor; he could feel the warmth of her hands together, her fingertips almost reaching the the opening on the back of his hands, her bare fingers almost touching his.

"We're glove buddies," she said, her smiled growing.

And Oscar had to smile too.

It was a silly statement, but the way she said it just made his pulse quicken, his breath hitch just a little.

She sounded fond.

Please let that tone be fond, came an unbidden thought.

So, we can all agree that when Oscar eventually gets his semblance, it's going to have something to do with Ruby, right? And I'm not even saying this from a shippy lens. Kid has an immortal wizard move into his brain at 14 that he can't kick out, immediately becomes a child soldier, lives through a train crash, countless grimm fights, crash lands a plane, gets shot in the chest, falls for - quite possibly - a few kilometres after blowing up a hole in the bottom of a military compound, gets beaten up and abducted by a goopy grimm super monster, magic blasted by his headmate's ex-wife, tortured and beaten up by a man six times his size, fights off Salem again to save his friends, and not ONE of those instances has been stressful enough to awaken it.

But both times he's talked about his semblance manifesting, it's been with Ruby. The first is in v5 after they spar and Ruby cheers him (and Jaune) on about getting there one day, while Ren makes a comment saying:

"One common philosophy is that a warrior's semblance is a part of who they are".

The second time is in v7 when Ruby does something new with her own semblance and Oscar asks if she's always been able to do that. Eventually leading to him lamenting again about how he's not unlocked his yet while everyone else's are evolving. And it's Ruby that responds with:

"Well, I'm sure we'll all be jealous when you do (figure it out)".

And then, from both Ruby and Oscar's perspectives, we are shown their attachment to each other. Ruby throughout V9 with Neo's illusions, and Oscar with - many instances - but especially in the recently released epilogue where he speaks at her grave. And in this speech we're reminded of that attachment as well as his struggles with identity. Specifically how those two things are intrinsically linked together:

"You always believed in the best. Saw people for who they really were. Some of us... don't know anymore. "

Oscar can't grasp his own personal super power that's "a part of himself" when he doesn't know who he is. He's losing himself to the merge, the boundaries of where he ends and Oz begins are blurring by the day, and he's only 15 and still growing into the person he could become. And the one person that was always certain of who he was, always made him feel like he was his own person... isn't around anymore. So he feels even more detached from his identity and the parts that comprise it than ever before.

But she returns in Vacuo before their final fight, and his semblance has been teased too many times to never appear. So my current guesses are either:

he's going to unlock it under stress to save Ruby from certain danger, because he "lost her once and won't risk it a second time"; or

he's going to unlock it in a different, maybe even quieter moment, where - once again, thanks to Ruby's certainty - he starts feeling like himself again.

Only one way to find out.

I love that it was confirmed that Oz was also fighting the merge just as hard as Oscar is, it really makes me happy that he cares and has cared about Oscar to the point where he is fighting a merge he knows he cant/has no chance of stopping, yet he’s still doing it, all for Oscar’s sake.

Same anon-chan, same. I mean it definitely makes sense that Oz would be fighting the Merge just as much as Oscar because he fully knows that the Merge is something that Oscar doesn’t want.

As you put perfectly, I also love the detail of Oz doing this all for Oscar’s sake since he genuinely does care about what Oscar wants.

It is for this reason why I’m kind of curious what the Merge was like during Ozpin’s experience.

Was Oz also apprehensive of merging with his predecessor and ultimately gave up and accepted his fate? Or did Oz and his predecessor come to a sense of understanding and their merge wasn’t as daunting as Oscar’s since Ozpin had learnt to perfectly coexist with his predecessor and had made peace with the two becoming a part of one another.

If we do get V10, it would be great to have a moment of Oscar possibly seeing the memories of previous Wizards in the Ozma Cycle and witnessing their experiences with the Merge and how they all handled it when their time came. Perhaps this could be a learning moment for him since I still would like to hold onto the possibility that the Merge may not be as bad as Oscar thinks it will be.

Back in V5, Oz simply described the merging experience as “his soul being paired with another and he is changed, but his memories stay with him”.

It is for this reason why I don’t think the Merge may be so bad and that Oscar will still get to retain his own identity even after becoming one with Oz.

But that’s how I’m interpreting it. Then again, the CRWBY Writers have been known to abandon previously established ideas in the RWBY narrative so who really knows what Oscar’s fate will be in the end. For what it’s worth, I hope it’s something positive at least.

The epilogue? A friend's post-war scenario with Ruby on Oscar's farm and actually enjoying the work she's doing? The Knight!Oscar and Princess!Ruby au I've been brainstorming with someone else? (We'd done a dozen of Ruby as the Knight and Oscar as the prince so decided to switch it up for a change). The epilogue again? Unfinished metas I'm still thinking about. The dojo scene? Combat gear looks good? All the wips I haven't been able to finish? Ruby seeing Oscar have a merge attack for the first time? The parallels? Their attachment to each other? And how we were RIGHT ABOUT IT?? CONFIRMED?? THANKS TO THE EPILOGUE?????!?!?!??!

In fairness, this is the most we've seen from Oscar's end of how deep their connection goes since then. And it's the first time in a positive, if still sad, way since then too.

I don't think I've thought about rg this much since v8 was airing...
