Tumblr media
I spent the last 11 months working with my illustrator, Marta, to make the children's book of my dreams. We were able to get every detail just the way I wanted, and I'm very happy with the final result. She is the best person I have ever worked with, and I mean, just look at those colors!
Tumblr media
I wanted to tell that story of anyone's who ever felt that they didn't belong anywhere. Whether you are a nerd, autistic, queer, trans, a furry, or some combination of the above, it makes for a sad and difficult life. This isn't just my story. This is our story.
Tumblr media
I also want to say the month following the book's launch has been very stressful. I have never done this kind of book before, and I didn't know how to get the word out about it. I do have a small publishing business and a full-time job, so I figured let's put my some money into advertising this time. Indie writers will tell you great success stories they've had using Facebook ads, so I started a page and boosting my posts.
Within a first few days, I got a lot of likes and shares and even a few people who requested the book and left great reviews for me. There were also people memeing on how the boy turns into a delicious venison steak at the end of the book. It was all in good fun, though. It honestly made made laugh. Things were great, so I made more posts and increased spending.
Tumblr media
But somehow, someway these new posts ended up on the wrong side of the platform. Soon, we saw claims of how the book was perpetuating mental illness, of how this book goes against all of basic biology and logic, and how the lgbtq agenda was corrupting our kids.
Tumblr media
This brought out even more people to support the book, so I just let them at it and enjoyed my time reading comments after work. A few days later, then conversation moved from politics to encouraging bullying, accusing others of abusing children, and a competition to who could post the most cruel image. They were just comments, however, and after all, people were still supporting the book.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then the trolls started organizing. Over night, I got hit with 3 one-star reviews on Amazon. My heart stopped. If your book ever falls below a certain rating, it can be removed, and blocked, and you can receive a strike on your publishing account. All that hard work was about to be deleted, and it was all my fault for posting it in the wrong place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I panicked, pulled all my posts, and went into hiding, hoping things would die down. I reported the reviews and so did many others, but here's the thing you might have noticed across platforms like Google and Amazon. There are community guidelines that I referenced in my email, but unless people are doing something highly illegal, things are rarely ever taken down on these massive platforms. So those reviews are still there to this day. Once again, it's my fault, and I should have seen it coming.
Luckily, the harassment stopped, and the book is doing better now, at least in the US. The overall rating is still rickety in Europe, Canada, and Australia, so any reviews there help me out quite a lot. I'm currently looking for a new home to post about the book and talk about everything that went into it. I also love to talk about all things books if you ever want to chat. Maybe I'll post a selfie one day, too. Otherwise, the book is still on Amazon, and the full story and illustrations are on YouTube as well if you want to read it for free.

Tumblr media
“guess what rachel just sent me.” you heard tom say when he arrived to your shared apartment.
“wedding invitations?!” you gasped as you almost stood up from the sofa since you were watching reruns of criminal minds, but tom stopped you.
“no, it’s better!” tom sat beside you and showed you his phone. “why didn’t you tell me you had a youtube channel?” on his phone screen was your review of the ballad of songbirds and snakes, which had become a very popular video over the past couple of days.
you hid your face with a pillow and groaned. “don’t remind me. i just wanted to talk about my books and my family didn’t care. don’t watch it! it’s embarrassing!”
“i think it’s cute. aw look, your dog made a cameo!” he pointed at your old dog you used to have that walked into the frame.
“indi! no, come sit right here. oh . . . and she’s walking away. okay, anyways.” your younger self said in the video
“indi? why Indi?” tom asked you even though you were still hiding from embarrassment.
“after indiana jones. my dad and i loved those movies and he gifted me indi as a birthday present.” you confessed.
“love, don’t be embarrassed. i think it’s cute that you manifested your life according to the comments on instagram,” tom paused the video then cuddled up to you. “i won’t watch it if you don’t want me to.”
“it’s fine, i just didn’t think anyone would find it. we can watch it together.” you uncovered yourself and sat down properly to watch the video with tom. before he pressed the play button and together you watch your younger self review the book.
“i’ve read all the hunger games books at least four times and this one did not disappoint. but i do hope whoever ends up being cast as young snow is someone hot. i’m sorry it’s the rules! and they will be my boyfriend, i’m calling dibs.”
tom smirked at you. “if only younger you could see you now.”
“she would definitely think ‘wow, how did we pull this beautiful man?’ then be confused as to why the hunger games and fnaf is trending in 2023.”

You loved reading and books. Before you met Toto, you used to be a bookseller and then worked for a publishing house. You actually met Toto because of the influx in Motorsport Romance's that made your company send you to a race to get some ... hands on experience and you ended up having your own sort of Motorsport Romance with a Team Principle.
You ended up marrying Toto and at first it was hard, but when COVID came and you ended up working from home since then so coming to the races had been much easier.

y/n: id love that! Thank you so much for the invite! I’ll just need to talk to my husband. I’ve never travelled solo and I’m a nervous traveller!
laurenroberts: That’s fine! Just let me know as and when babe!
“Babe, can we talk for a second” you asked your husband as you walk into the kitchen where he is sat with his morning coffee.
"Yes honey what is it?" he asks looking over at you, pushing a glass of orange juice towards you.
"Well, one of the authors that I really like invited me to a book signing.."
"Oh that's amazing sweetheart. Are you going to go?" he says checking his emails not fully paying attention.
"Well, thats the thing. It's over a race weekend... and" you start but his head bolts up to interrupt you.
"You better not be asking for my permission for if you can go, you know you don't have to ask!" he says almost as though he's offended you with think that of him!
"No, no of course not. But I'm scared to go alone, you know how I am!" you explain and he nods remembering the last time you guys flew.
"Well, how about I buy you a nice first class ticket and make the experience worth it. I'll pay for a fancy hotel and a spa evening for when you land ... how does that sound" he grins pulling you into him kissing your forehead.
"You don't have to do that for me!" you exclaim feeling bad!

-> y/user: BEST HUSBAND.
You and Toto had spend the day putting up the swinging chair, and making the room cozy with fairy lights.
He had started to organize your shelves in colour coordination order making a rainbow. You felt so bad when your need to have them in genre and alphabetical order took over.
"Baby, as incredible as this looks, I'm never going to find any books!" you argued and he looks and pulled out Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros.
"See I found you current smutty dragon book!" he smiles handing it to you and your eyes widen at the lingo he was using.
"Have you been... watching my videos?" you ask in shock.
"Mmmm yes honey. i find them very amusing!" he admits and you just stare at him in shock.

How do you meet COD men ?
Price, Soap, Rudy, Ghost, Gaz, Keegan
(Sorry in advance for my mistakes, English is not my mother tongue. So sorry if it's badly written or if they're OOC. )
P R I C E :
Tumblr media
-"I'm going to die," you say to your friend.
-"What ? Why would you die ?"
-"I sent a pregnant Shrek cake to a military base."
-"Why would you do that ?!"
-"This guy ordered a cake for his soldier's birthday, but I also had the order for a prank and...
-"You mixed up the two boxes."
-"Yes."
-"So, actually,....a soldier is opening his box and..."
-"And he will see a pregnant Shrek cake."
-"...It was good to know you when you were alive."
-"You're supposed to reassure me !"
-"Oh sorry. You will die fast, don't worry. It's their job"
-"Fuck you."
-"How was the guy who ordered ?"
-"Like he could crash my head between his arms"
-"Shit."
-"But he was handsome, I guess."
-"Guess your last view will be nice, at least."
-"Shit, how do I even excuse myself for that ? I can't go to the base and say "sorry I sent a Shrek cake, but it was a mistake can you let me in ?"
-"I guess you just say it," a man says.
-You gulp when you recognize the Captain who ordered you the cake.
-"Sir, I'm so sorry, I swear it's not on purpose, I just mixed two orders and..."
-"And you made my boys laugh after a rough mission."
-"oh."
-"So thanks. Of course, it was not what I planned for a birthday, but seeing them happy was nice."
-"You're..welcome, I guess ?"
-He smiles.
-"But don't ever do another pregnant Shrek when I order from you, next time, please."
-"Next time ?"you say surprised.
-"It was delicious, I don't plan to change a good baker," he smiles.
And that's how you gain a regular after offering a pregnant Shrek cake. (even though each time he sees green on your hand, he seems scared when he takes the box.)
S O A P :
Tumblr media
- He drew you like Gollum.
- I know, it sounds horrible, let me explain.
- You needed money, and you offered your services as a model for art classes.
- Soap was one of the students.
- During his leaves, he often took art classes to relax.
- And usually it goes well.
- But when he saw you....he thought he could never do justice to your face.
- He felt so self-conscious about his skills that he ended up doing a horrible portrait of you.
- And it could have ended up here, but the teacher decided to show everyone's pieces of art to analyze them
- So you saw Soap's piece where you looked like Gollum.
- And you knew it was from him.
- Everyone has a smile, while he was terrified.
- Usually, he's self-confident, but it's on the battlefield, in his life. The art was the only place where he was not sure he belonged too.
- At the end of the classes, he decided to talk to you.
- "I'm sorry for what happened today, I felt anxious and I ended up doing a bad portrait. It doesn't look like you at all."
- You looked up at him and smiled.
- "Why do you apologize? It was fun to see me like this, plus you need to start somewhere, no? You can't be a fucking Leonardo Da Vinci from the first day."
- He was too stunned to speak.
- "John or Johnny," he said.
- You looked at him confused.
- "Name's John, sorry, it seems you really blew my mind."
- You chuckled. "Nice to meet you, John. Hope next time your mind will be more confused for the next class."
- He nodded.
- Wait, did you say the next class? But it was nude models…
- Hope he won't draw a stick figure this time.
R U D Y
Tumblr media
- You were an author.
- Well, it was not your main job since you only sold four books this year, but you considered yourself an author.
- And you had a hater. Someone who left a hateful review on each of your books.
- You knew that the next day after publishing your book, he would leave a bad review.
- So when your boss at the library told you that someone was regularly buying your books, you knew it could only be this hater, since the other person who bought your books was your mom.
- And you had had a bad day. So when your boss told you he was there, you were about to confront this hater.
- Maybe to understand what he didn't like or to know if he was just a coward.
- So you strode towards the spot your boss pointed at.
- "Hey, you," you said, not sure what to add after. When the man raised his head, he looked fit, and you knew you couldn't stand a chance in a fight if he decided to fight.
- "Wait, are you the author Y/N?" Rudy asked, with a sparkle in his eyes.
- Wait... A sparkle?
- "Hm, yeah, it's me," you answered, not sure what was happening.
- "I love your work. Your last book was really amazing. I have followed you since your debut."
- Your mouth was open, because :
1. one, your mom had lied to you when she told you she had bought three copies of your book.
2. And second, you had your first fan in front of you.
- "Thanks," you almost said, tears of joy welling up. "Sorry if I sound harsh. I thought you were that hater."
- "Oh yeah, I saw those reviews on your page. He's always there, but don't worry, I'll leave positive reviews to balance it. I'm Rudy, by the way."
- "Nice to meet you, and thanks for loving my work."
- "No need to thank me. I just appreciate good books."
- "What's your favorite, if I may ask?"
- Rudy smiled, and you both started chatting about books that afternoon. Maybe your reviews would improve after this, not just because of your writing, but also because he found you stunning.
G H O S T :

- Ghost scared people on the battlefield.
- However, the people who were most scared of him were the mechanics on the base.
- Ghost was a horrible driver, and everyone knew that.
- So, each time he went to the mechanics, they knew it was because he had done horrible damage to the cars.
- A game was organized whenever Ghost approached – you played rock, paper, scissors, and the loser had to fix his car.
- However, you were new to the base.
- When you saw this guy standing and waiting, you went to him without realizing all this.
- But when you saw his car, you understood why no one else was coming.
- He had a bowling ball in the trunk, the roof was broken, all the windows were shattered, and one tire was burnt.
- "...did you take this on the battlefield?" you asked.
- "No." He said shortly.
- You blinked. "Then why is it in this condition?"
- "There was a grandma on the road."
- "...so, because of a grandma, you have a bowling ball in your trunk?"
- "Because I swerved to avoid her and ended up hitting a bowling alley."
- "How did you even get a driver's license?"
- "The examiner was too sick to see me again for the ninth time, so he just gave it to me."
- "I guess I'll fix your car, but please don't drive if you don't need to, sir."
- "Sure."
- The next day, he was there again with a hole in the car because of a bird. How ? You didn't know.
-But it seemed you had become his official mechanic without even knowing it.
G A Z :
Tumblr media
- When he hears your voice in a café, he recognizes you.
- The problem is, he can't come to you.
- Because if he knows your voice, it's because of your streams.
- Your ASMR streams.
- Being a soldier means your sleep schedule isn't really regular, and to help himself sleep, Gaz discovered ASMR.
- He found out about your streams, then your Patreon, and... let's just say your ASMR is spicy.
- So yes, if he says he's a fan of yours, it implies he has to reveal he listens to that in front of his teammates.
- And he's not ashamed of it.
- But he doesn't want Price to know he likes spicy ASMR, just like he wouldn't want to know what Price's fantasies are, or what Ghost likes in bed.
- (He wants to forget Soap's idea about Ghost in pink lingerie and a thong, and the day Price wore latex pants.)
- It's a line he doesn't want to cross.
- But he's also your biggest fan.
- So he tries to walk near you.
- But you're with a friend.
- And he doesn't know if your friend knows about this.
- So he ends up just glancing at you.
- Shit, how does he approach someone who does +18 things, without saying he knows they do this?
- Maybe if he waves... or just says hello? Or maybe if he asks for a selfie or…
- "Are you trying to imitate Ghost?" Soap asks.
- "What? No. Why do you say that?!" Gaz says, looking away.
- "Because you're staring at this person like they killed your dad and ate your mom, then burned your house and kidnapped your dog."
- "...it was really detailed for a scenario," Gaz says, confused.
- "So?"
- "I just know them, but I don't want to disturb them." Gaz says, trying to lie and tell the truth at the same time.
- If Soap finds out the truth, he'll never hear the end of it.
- "Do you want me to call them?"
- "NO. Absolutely not, don't do this, mate."
- "Why not?"
- Because they'll think you listen to their spicy ASMR audios, he wants to say, but he remains quiet.
- God, he feels like a teenager.
- But suddenly, he sees you walking towards them.
- You sit next to them, and... you wink at him, pointing to his key ring on his bag.
- It's your merch.
- Meaning... you know he's a fan.
- "Thanks for supporting me," you whisper before returning to your friend.
- Gaz doesn't speak until he gets back to base, too embarrassed but also too happy.
K E E G A N :
Tumblr media
- You were tired.
- The rush had finally ended. It was now 11 PM, and there was this one client who had just ordered 10 Happy Meals.
- You wanted to slap him. He had ordered at 22:57, and the fast food closed at 23:00.
- So you didn't have a choice but to serve him.
- You looked at your colleague, who was sighing, and you nodded.
- You were preparing the trays, ready to see 10 kids running around and getting everything dirty, but…
- It was only one man with a mask.
- When you saw him, you were ready to raise your hands and give him money. Why the heck would a man with a gun and a mask be at a McDonald's at 23:00 buying 10 Happy Meals?
- But he just took them and ate.
- One after another.
- In silence.
- In five minutes.
- And then he left.
- You looked at your colleague.
- "Guess it's as weird as people who order a burger without buns," your colleague said.
- You nodded and thought it was just the one weird client of the day.
- But every Wednesday, he was there, in silence.
- Maybe he hated Ronald McDonald, so he planned to run out of your stock of Happy Meals?
- Or maybe he collected the toys?
- You didn't know, but he was there.
- And you saw him eating those nuggets and fries without sauce.
- He didn't touch his drinks. My, how dry it must be.
- But one Wednesday you took a day off. So when you came back the next day, you joked with your colleague about the Happy Meal guy.
- But they didn't laugh.
- "Who?" they asked.
- And just like that, you realized that when you weren't there, the Happy Meal guy wasn't there either.
- You were scared.
- Maybe he thought buying Happy Meals seduced you, or it was his way of warning you before he would kill you, like a threat, "You'll end up like those nuggets."
- So, when you saw him enter, you sent your colleague.
- However, your manager decided to give you your break at that moment, meaning it would be only you and him in the place.
- You tried to act normally, but you noticed how he seemed not to like his food yet still ate it.
- You sighed and sat next to him, offering him some sauces.
- "It's better with these. You know, you can have them for free in the menu next time."
- He looked at you and nodded.
- He then tried it and smiled.
- That's when you noticed his dog tags.
- "We have a discount for military personnel, so you could take a real meal instead of a Happy Meal if you want to."
- He looked surprised and nodded.
- Next time, he ordered 2 Happy Meals and two regular menus.
- So you smiled.
- Until his other masked colleagues ordered 20 Happy Meals because they liked the skull toys in them.
- Maybe it was just military men who had a problem with Happy Meals.

Free Disco Elysium papers
Disco Elysium is a profoundly thought-provoking game, and I’ve seen a lot of wonderful meta for it on here. Plus, video game studies is an incredibly interesting and rapidly evolving field! I think a lot of you would enjoy reading some published literature on the game! I’ve also seen people talk about how a lot of the online meta for the game comes without considering the Estonian context the game was made in. Guess what, there’s an open access journal for that! Baltic Screen Media Review did a special issue on Disco Elysium! You can find it here: https://sciendo.com/issue/BSMR/9/1 Some of these texts are... really dense, and not super approachable. I found myself checking out books from the library just to understand one (The Object Gives Rise to Thought: Hermeneutics of Objects in Disco Elysium; I liked it a lot! Having the lens of Disco Elysium to guide me let me understand the philosophical framework a lot better tbh). I haven’t read them all. Plenty of them have concepts in the titles I’ve never even heard of, especially because I don’t have much background in philosophy. But I learned a lot from them, and I’m excited to learn more. Have fun, everyone!

Unwanted: Chapter 1, Unarmed - Pt. 2
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Avenger!Fem!Reader
Summary: When your FWB relationship with your best friend Bucky Barnes turns into something more, you couldn’t be happier. That is, however, until a new Avenger sets her sights on your super soldier and he inadvertently breaks your heart. You take on a mission you might not be prepared for to put some distance between the two of you and open yourself up to past traumas. Too bad the only one who can help you heal is the one person you can no longer trust.
Warnings: (For this part only; see Story Masterlist for general Warnings) Mild language, Bucky and Reader being Tolkien nerds, light fluff, mention of rabies (it's a super scary disease and we should all be vigilant, okay?!)
Word Count: 1.6k
Previously On...: You just had the pleasure of meeting the very handsome Bucky Barnes. Despite a little bit of awkwardness during your first encounter, you have a feeling your life is about to get a lot more interesting now that he's been introduced into it.
A/N: You know what? I said I wasn't going to do this, but I thought "fuck it!" and decided to post all of Chapter 1: Unarmed. My anxiety is too high to just sit on it. So, please enjoy Ch1. Pt2! Pts 3 & 4 to follow!
Banner By: The absolutely amazing @mrsbuckybarnes1917
Taglist: (Please let me know if you’d like to be added!) @blackhawkfanatic
The next evening, you were making your way back to your suite after a productive, albeit exhausting, day in your lab. You were working on a crisis prediction real-time monitoring system to anticipate global threats. You were convinced it would allow the Avengers to respond to trouble faster, but perfecting the privacy algorithm had been an absolute pain in the ass, and you still hadn't gotten it quite right. Technically, you could have farmed the project off to a subordinate; hell, even a team of subordinates of a subordinate, but this was one of your pet projects and you insisted on being hands-on in its development.
You had your tablet open as you walked, chewing on your thumb and reviewing the dataset from the run of your latest algorithm model one more time. Closer, but not good enough. If you were going to convince Tony that this was a program worth implementing, especially at its projected cost, everything had to be perfect. "Damn it," you muttered to yourself.
You rounded the corner and ran smack into Bucky's chest, dropping your tablet and causing him to drop the three books he'd been holding under his remaining arm. "Oh, shit-- I'm so sorry," you uttered as you bent down to retrieve the dropped items. Bucky leaned down to assist you, but you waved him off.
"’S my fault; I've got it," you told him, piling up his books for him. "I wasn't paying attention to where I was going. I didn't hurt you, did I?"
Bucky leaned up against the wall and chuckled while you stood up and handed the books back to him. "I doubt you could hurt me," he said, smiling softly. "No offense."
You let out a small laugh. "None taken." He was a super soldier, after all. Stealing a glance at book spines, you couldn't suppress the smile that crossed your face. "Lord of the Rings," you nodded appreciatively. "Have you read them before?"
Bucky looked down at the books tucked under his arm. "No, first time. I read The Hobbit back when it was first published in '37, but these didn't come out until after..." he trailed off, but you knew what he meant. After he'd been abducted and brainwashed, turned into a murderer.
You nodded in understanding. "I'm actually really excited for you," you told him. "What I wouldn't give to be able to read them again for the first time."
"You a Tolkien fan, then?" he asked you. When you nodded, he continued: "When I finish them, maybe we can talk about them sometime? Steve's not really into fantasy."
"Yeah, I'd like that," you said. "If you're interested, we could watch the movies. I'll warn you though; they're long as hell, but their masterpieces. I mean, they didn't need to turn The Hobbit into three separate films, but still, they'll blow your fucking mind."
Bucky ran his tongue over his lower lip and you couldn't help but follow the motion with your eyes. "That sounds like fun," he said, his eyes twinkling with... something. "Your place or mine?" Was he… flirting with you?
"How 'bout you finish the books first, then we'll talk logistics," you teased. "Hey, speaking of, what floor did they end up putting you on?"
"Um, this one, actually," he said, tilting his head toward a nearby door.
"No shit," you remarked, laughingly. "You must have done something to piss Rogers off, because he put you right across the hall from me."
Bucky looked down, scuffing the toe of his boot against the carpeting. "He said it was the quietest floor, thought I'd prefer that."
You pursed your lips, considering. "Yeah, that makes sense; it's just been me on this level for ages. It'll be nice to have some company for a change."
Bucky looked surprised. "Stark's kept you down here all by your lonesome? That doesn't seem very nice."
You shook your head and dismissed his concern with a wave. "Oh, no-- Tony hates that I still live down here, actually. He put in all new living quarters a few years back. Everyone migrated upstairs, but I was the only one who didn't want to move."
"Why's that?" Bucky asked, appearing genuinely interested.
"I've lived here since I graduated college," you admitted, "back when it was still just Stark Tower. When Tony relocated here from Malibu to rebrand it for the Avengers, he wanted to redo everything, which meant fancy new suites for everybody. But I love my rooms, so I asked to stay put. They've been my home for so long now and I guess I just like the stability, you know?"
Bucky nodded thoughtfully. "And Tony thinks highly enough of you that he let the blow to his ego slide?"
You raised an eyebrow. "Maybe I have enough dirt on him that he felt like he didn't have much of a choice." You snorted, not able to keep up the pretense. "No, but seriously, I know you and Tony have a complicated... history, but he's not a bad guy. Ego as tall as this Tower, yes, definitely, but he's also incredibly kind and generous. He paid for my entire college education-- undergrad, post-grad, doctorate. I owe everything I have to him."
Bucky shifted against the wall. "That is pretty generous. And he never expected anything from you in return?" He didn't say the words out loud, but the implication was there. Had you slept with Tony in exchange for your diplomas? The innuendo should have bothered you, but it had been posed to you so many times over the years, you'd stopped being offended by it. Before Pepper, Tony had had quite the  reputation, after all, and an MIT education didn’t exactly come cheap. Most people couldn’t understand why he would offer a full ride to someone who, at the time, had been a complete stranger.
"Tony appreciates talent," you clarified. "When he finds it, he cultivates it, nourishes it, does everything he can to help it grow to its fullest potential. But he does like to get a return on his investments, and my skills have helped him make a lot of money." You shrugged your shoulders with a chuckle. "I love my job, I love the work we do, I love the stupid weirdo family we've built here, so I've always considered meeting Tony to be the best thing that ever happened to me. He's kind of like my own fairy godfather."
"So, what exactly does he have you do around here?" Bucky asked. "I know Steve said you did computer stuff, but you said it was an over-simplification."
You ran a hand up to rub the back of your neck while you considered your answer. How best to explain your position to someone who was born before the invention of the television? "Okay," you exhaled, "so, short answer is that I'm the CTO, the Chief Technology Officer, of Stark Industries and, under that, I run the Avenger’s Technology and Innovation Department. It's sort of our take on Research and Development. I've got a lab where I'm in charge of about 450 scientists, engineers, computer programmers, analysts, et. cetera. And our entire job is coming up with cool new ways of making things easier for the Avengers. Like, new features for suits, developing useful programs, coming up with new defenses and weapons, that kind of thing. And if we've got missions that require heavy computer- or tech-work, I come along for on-site support. I'm combat-trained and good with languages, so that comes in handy in the field. There’s probably a ton of field agents that could go in my place, but for Tony, it’s a matter of trust."
Bucky let out a low, appreciative whistle. "Damn. That's impressive. You're a little intimidating, you know that?"
Laughing, you tucked your tablet under your arm. "Please. I'm about as intimidating as a hamster." You paused to think. "Maybe a hamster with rabies, but still a hamster."
A series of beeps emanated from your tablet. As you pulled it out to check the alert, Bucky moved away from the wall. "I'm so sorry-- you were heading back to your room and I've basically been holding you hostage this entire time."
"Actually," you said, silencing the notification alarm that had distracted you, "That was just a reminder I set for myself to eat. Sometimes I lose track of time in the lab and completely forget to have dinner. Are you hungry? You could join me."
Bucky pulled his head back, regarding you as though he wasn't sure if you were serious.
"Or, if you don't want to, that's cool," you said quickly once you noticed his hesitation. "I mean, you wanted a quiet floor. Annoying neighbor is probably the last--"
"I'd love to," interrupted Bucky with a grin. "I'm just surprised someone like you would want to spend time with someone like me."
"Someone like me? Hey now, for all you know, I could be an absolute trash person," you teased, playfully punching him on the shoulder.
Bucky chuckled, his eyes sparkling with a newfound warmth. "Well, I highly doubt that, but I guess I'll find out soon enough."
"Don't say I didn't warn you when you do." You cocked your head toward the door to your room. "I'm going to change out of my work clothes. While I do, how about you decide what you're in the mood for, and we'll go from there. That sound good?" Bucky nodded as you let yourself into your room. The evening had taken an unexpected turn, but you found you were looking forward to spending more time in the company of Bucky Barnes.

Debunking Anti(-endo's)Misinfo. AKA: How are anti-endos so bad at sources????
Tumblr media
(The original)
Oh, well good on you for trying to cover everything! Nice of anti-endos to finally start trying to use science to prove their arguments. I'm sure these sources will totally be reliable and will prove your points beyond a shadow of a doubt, and that you won't just be falling flat on your face with every single attempt at basic reading comprehension, and end up repeatedly make a complete fool of yourself.
Let's go!
Tumblr media
Off to a pretty strong start, acknowledging that many endogenic systems don't have DID or OSDD. Sadly, that basic fact is something that seems to escape most anti-endos. So with this in mind, I think it's safe to say the goal of this post is going to be to prove...
You can't possibly have DID without trauma.
You can't possibly have OSDD without trauma.
You can't be a system without DID/OSDD.
Let's read through and see how they'll do at proving their points by the end. I promise you, the results... won't surprise you. 😉
Tumblr media
Well, there goes that strong start.
Tumblr media
The source here is a Carrd and so-called "common sense."
Meanwhile, in the World Health Organization's ICD-11, alters or dissociative identities are described as "distinct personality states." In the same page, it's stated that you can have multiple "distinct personality states" without a disorder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is information from the World Health Organization affirming that you can be plural without a disorder. And I think that prevails over your so-called "common sense."
See also these screenshots from the plurality chapter of Transgender Mental Health, a book published by the American Psychiatric Association:
Tumblr media
Finally, I really want to put a focus on this line of logic: "you cannot have alters without having a disorder, this is common sense as it's not normal to have alters."
Normal has multiple meanings in different contexts. The ICD-11's boundary with normality uses normal to mean "non-pathological." But this post seems to be using "normal" in the lay way to mean "common."
And that makes this particular rhetoric extremely dangerous and harmful to many communities. "If it's not common, it's a mental illness," was the basis for homosexuality and being transgender being listed as mental illnesses. "Most people don't think this way, so there's something wrong with them."
This could also easily be used to pathologize Otherkin and other alterhumans as mentally ill because it's not "normal" to identify as an animal.
The modern World Health Organization and American Psychiatric Association recognize the fact that simply thinking unusually or differently isn't an illness or disorder.
Statements like yours do not exist within a vacuum, but harken back to decades past when any non-typical thinking would have you labeled as having a disorder that needed treated.
Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
Let's be thankful to live in a world today where our differences aren't considered disorders. And let's not resort to ideologies that threaten to return us to those days past.
Tumblr media
Wait... who suggests this? Who are they? I think I need more info...
Tumblr media
So... "some researchers."
Also, can we talk about how this starts off with "sometimes called multiple personality disorder." I checked to see if this was before the name changed in the ICD (which I believe was 2015) and it doesn't seem to be! Oldest archive I can find is 2020!
Rethink.org is a charity.
These are not peer-reviewed papers.
The page references "some researchers" without names or sources.
I have no idea who authored this or if they're qualified at all in this field.
This is a terrible source. A web page by an anonymous author citing other unnamed authors with no reason to think anyone who wrote this had any idea what they were talking about!
Tumblr media
This says DID is caused by many things, and lists trauma as only one that's included. This doesn't back up the idea DID/OSDD can only be caused by trauma, and suggests the opposite.
Oh, and "it's also known as split personality disorder." 😔
Go home WebMD.
Tumblr media
Usually associated with doesn't mean it's a requirement, and in fact implies that it isn't always.
Tumblr media
"Is associated with." "Can be a response to trauma."
Reiterating that the first two goals here were to prove you can't have DID or OSDD without trauma. And these aren't doing that.
An association doesn't mean there's a causation, and it doesn't mean that association is there in 100% of cases.
Tumblr media
"often develop."
Like with "usually", you wouldn't use the word often if if something always happened. The choice of wording implies you can have dissociative disorders without trauma.
Tumblr media
Are... they messing with us right now???
I swear, you can't have a post that sets out with the goal of disproving the existence of endogenic plurality, and then use quotes that seem to consistently imply there can be other causes for DID and not pick up on that theme!
Tumblr media
Oh, yay! We finally got a quote that's actually trying to argue the point we started with.
But, again, this runs into a similar issue to the ReThink.org one. This is a random independent organization. There is no author for this article. It hasn't undergone peer review like an academic paper would.
There is no evidence the person who wrote this article is actually educated in dissociative disorders.
Tumblr media
And finally back to "usually."
Tumblr media
You must be so proud...
Tumblr media
Source Round-Up
There was a lot here, so let's just recap.
6 out of 8 of these sources only say that DID is "usually" or "often" or "can be" caused by or associated with trauma. These actually imply there are cases where it's NOT caused by trauma, going against the original goals of this post.
Finally, there were two sources, Rethink and Mind.org, which did suggest DID is just caused by trauma, full stop. But both of these are extremely questionable as sources.
Neither named their authors. There's no indication what the review process is for their websites. And "Rethink" merely said this is what "some researchers" believe.
So let's double back to those goals set at the beginning.
You can't possibly have DID without trauma: One source says this, but the reliability of that source is questionable. Another source says some researchers are saying this but doesn't name any researchers or cite those sources. Meanwhile, the other six sources imply that it IS possible for DID to exist without trauma.
You can't possibly have OSDD without trauma: Neither of the two sources that suggest DID can only be caused by trauma mention OSDD at all.
You can't be a system without DID/OSDD: None of the sources suggest you need DID/OSDD to be a system or to be plural.
So far, you've failed to prove you can't be a system without DID or OSDD. You've failed to show you can't have OSDD without trauma. And the case for DID being exclusive to trauma frankly looks weaker than before you started talking.
Incredible work so far!!!
And I mean that in the way that nothing about this is remotely credible!
Tumblr media
Ugh. There is SO much wrong here. First, no sources for their claims about tulpamancy.
Now, tulpamancy draws its name from a Tibetan Buddhist practice called sprul pa.
This is not the same practice though. And the Tibetan Buddhist practice is NOT CALLED TULPAMANCY.
Something which should be obvious to anyone who knows even the most basic facts about language, with the -mancy suffix being derived from Latin. And tulpamancy as a practice generally isn't religious.
From Dr. Samuel Veissiere of McGill University:
The community is primarily divided between so-called psychological and metaphysical explanatory principles. In the psychological community, neuroscience (or folk neuroscience) is the explanation of choice. Tulpas are understood as mental constructs that have achieved sentience. The metaphysical explanation holds that Tulpas are agents of supernatural origins that exist outside the hosts’ minds, and who come to communicate with them. Of 118 respondents queried on the question, 76.5% identified with the psychological explanation, 8.5% with the metaphysical, and 14% with a variety of “other” explanations, such as a mixture of psychological and metaphysical.
When discussing the research into tulpamancy, we're not discussing a religious or spiritual practice that's been validated by psychologists.
We're talking about a primarily psychological practice that's been validated by psychologists.
And as for the DSM quote, it confirms that religious practices aren't a disorder. Cool. But it also implies that religious practices can result in multiple distinct personality states. Hence why they needed that criterion. It's not stated as explicitly in the DSM as in the ICD, but the implication is there, especially when taken together.
Whether you call these "alters" or not is up to you. Most endogenic systems aren't using the word "alter" to describe their headmates.
But regardless of the word, what the research is showing is that there are multiple phenomena which can result in people having multiple self-conscious agents sharing the same body.
Tumblr media
I mean, you've still done a really bad job at showing DID and OSDD form purely from trauma, with many of your sources straight up saying the opposite.
And remember, a lot of mixed origin systems will say that their other headmates aren't caused by or related to their disorder. And there are documented cases of people with DID both having alters associated with DID, and having non-aversive entities they commune with outside of that, as Kluft references in this paper:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The woman he describes here, who experienced ceding control to another entity who talked through her, would qualify as a mixed origin system in the modern plural community.
Tumblr media
SIX OF YOUR EIGHT SOURCES LEFT THE DOOR OPEN FOR DID TO FORM WITHOUT TRAUMA!
NONE CLAIMED OSDD COULD ONLY COME FROM TRAUMA!
NONE CLAIMED YOU NEEDED DID OR OSDD TO BE PLURAL!
Your sources are NOT claiming what you think they're claiming!!!!!!!
If this is "all the proof you need," to say endogenic systems aren't valid, it's clear you were only ever interested in confirming your worldview.
But surely you can't seriously think this will convince anyone who isn't already indoctrinated!
Tumblr media
Not even addressing this in full. It's such a blatant strawman that it's not worth my time.
There are similarities between plurality and being LGBTQ. Especially to the many trans systems out there who are seeing anti-endos use the same rhetoric that transmeds have. Or like you did earlier, are endorsing the same types of views that led to homosexuality being pathologized until the 70s. But nobody is saying it's the exactly the same!
Tumblr media
I'm not sure what this is specifically referring to. But it might be about the line in the differential diagnosis for DID in the PTSD section where it's stated DID may not be preceded by trauma or have co-occurring PTSD symptoms.
Tumblr media
It does also say in another section that DID is associated with trauma, but it never actually says that's the only way to get DID.
Tumblr media
This is a straight-up lie. Most sources used by endogenic systems are less than a decade old, with some being as recent as 2023.
Here's the breakdown of some of the dates in @guardianssystem's doc, for reference:
Tumblr media
I mean, I feel like part of the reason nobody has been able to disprove it is because a lot of its more specific claims have been really hard to test.
But that's neither here nor there.
The bigger issue you'll run into is that the creators of the theory you're citing have stated that there may be other ways for people to be plural. Or as they phrased it, having "conscious and self-conscious dissociated parts."
Tumblr media
The above quote is from two of the three authors of The Haunted Self, the creators of the theory of the structural dissociation.
The TOSD is made to propose a way trauma can cause dissociative disorders to develop. But it does NOT suggest you need to have dissociative disorders to be plural, and I doubt the authors appreciated their work being twisted like that
Final Grade:
F-
This started with three goals.
Let's look back at them one last time.
You can't possibly have DID without trauma.
You can't possibly have OSDD without trauma.
You can't be a system without DID/OSDD.
By the end of this, have any of these claims successfully been proven?
I don't feel they have.
The first claim is what all the sources tried to focus on. But most of the sources didn't say that and didn't support it. All but two implied that DID could possibly form other ways.
And for the others? Nothing suggests OSDD can only be caused by trauma.
And you failed to provide any sources that suggested you couldn't be plural without DID and OSDD.
You completely and utterly failed to find decent sources to back up your claims, and to make a compelling case for them, at every conceivable juncture.
If I were you, I would be embarrassed to have put out something of such poor quality.
What have we learned:
Non-disordered and endogenic plurality has been supported and validated across the psychological field, including the World Health Organization's ICD-11 and Trasngender Mental Health which has been reviewed and published by the American Psychiatric Association.
The creators of the theory of structural dissociation believe it might be possible that "self-conscious dissociative parts of the personality" might form without trauma and that this needs to be further researched.
Tulpamancy is a mostly psychological practice that has been studied and validated by psychologists.
Anti-endos are really bad at sources.
Conversely, the majority of endogenic sources are actual peer reviewed academic papers. And contrary to false claims here, many of the papers are actually very recent.

Hi, Jenn. I think I’m freaking out. My debut will be traditionally published in a few months, and I suddenly have this feeling everyone’s going to hate it. It’s too immature. It sounds more like MG than YA. It’s sad and repetitive. No one’s going to want to read anything else I write. WHAT DO I DO? How I deal with this??
Well if it helps, I KNOW you are freaking out. :-)
Listen, you didn't get to this place in a vacuum, right? You have an agent, and an editor, and an entire team of people at the publisher -- ALL OF WHOM had to see something good / enjoyable / sellable about your book in order for them to want to spend time and money on it and for it to get published.
Do you think all those people have bad taste and are stupid? (If so: RUDE!) If not, well then, clearly your book is already liked by many smart people with good taste and years of experience in the field. That's a start, yeah?
I know often it's hard to even hear praise, whereas criticism rings loudly. I can't tell you how many times a book it has happened that a book has gotten a STARRED REVIEW, and the author can only focus on the one faint criticism within the glowing praise!
So just remember: It's out of your hands now. You can't control how readers react to your book; that's actually none of your beeswax. Some readers will probably hate it, tbh, and there's absolutely nothing (legal or advisable) that you can do about that besides just move on, let go and let God!
For other readers, maybe this is a book that changes their life, makes them think about something in a new way, makes them love reading. Maybe they will think about it 30 years from now when they are an adult... or, maybe it just brings them enjoyment for a few hours, that's fine, too.
Good books inspire strong feelings in readers, and the more readers you have, the more different kinds of feelings there will be. It's better for a book to have lots of people talking about it than for it to be utterly ignored, that's for sure.
Think about the books that impacted you, that you loved, that mean the world to you. Go and read the one-star reviews of them, and see that even the best, most beloved, most acclaimed books have haters, and there's something hilarious and comforting about that, actually. Humanity: What a rich and varied tapestry!
Feel better. You're doing amazing, sweetie!

Do people judge a book by its cover? They absolutely do. They take one look at this, and they either often instantly hate it or love it.
Tumblr media
Talking about how things should be is just yelling into the void. There is just reality. And this is the reality of being a self-published indie author.
Tumblr media
People make complete conclusions based off of incomplete information. In this case, my book, there are no adults pressuring the boy into getting any surgery. There's no mention of surgery at all even. This person is thinking of a children's book written by a very popular political figure. Some people have had the courtesy to ask me if it's like that book. It's not at all. It's not even political. It's a story told from the perspective of a kid who grows up knowing they are very different and yet can tell no one about it. Even saying a word about it would bring all of his deepest and darkest fears into reality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The challenge was to make the story as dark and scary as I could without ever going too far for a children's book. There are already some scary children's books and movies out there that prove what's possible, and I worked with my illustrator, Marta, to push it as far as we could go. There's one page we had to re-do almost completely because even I said that's a bit much.
But I'm very happy with the final result because we also got to do so many fun and colorful pages like this.
Tumblr media
There will be plenty more drive-by reviews as the book continues to grow and grow. They take one look and see a soapbox to express all of their disappointments and frustrations in life.
Tumblr media
I think they might be scared of the book. The world they grew up in is slowly fading away day by day, and it's all they have come to know. They've been around for so long that everything has become a bore to them, and the only remaining pleasure is to escape into the past in order to better preserve it. I can oddly relate, actually.
So the book is on Amazon, and you can watch the whole thing for free on YouTube as well. If you get the chance, let me know what you think. Literally, watching it for free and then giving it a simple rating on Amazon is the best way to support the book. But I also love waking up to reviews like this every day.

Babel by R.F. Kuang
I got this book last year, and then procrastinated picking it up for months. I don't know what made me feel intimidated, but I was a bit blocked. And then I decided to finally give it a try. I spent a whole month on it and though my reading was slow I loved this book. I was a bit unsure about the historical fantasy before reading the novel, because I know that as an historian historical fiction doesn't alwasy work for me. But it worked so well, the author did an amazing job and I loved the setting. The fantasy element was so clever and flowed perfectly with the story providing a lot of thought provoking conversations and reflections. It is definitely a dark academia book but to be honest that was not what stayed with me at all. Its themes of language and translation as well as colonialism and racism are at the core of this novel, academia is the setting and it is very much influential but it's not the first thing that will come to my mind when thinking about Babel in the future, and belive me I will be thinking about this book a lot. I really like R.F. Kuang's writing and I will be keeping an eye out for more of her fantasy in the future. I have finished this book over a week ago and I am still unable to for coherent thoughts on it, simply because I have too many thoughts. I truly adored it, the ending was very good, though if I could change something I would have the epilogue moved before the last scene of the last chapter as I think that was a stronger ending. Aside this, my only other negative thought is that the pacing felt a bit weird at times, but it's really not a big deal. I definitely do recommend reading this novel. And I think it could work even for people who don't normally read a lot of fantasy, so don't let intimidate you. I wish this book had been published when I was in high school studying languages I think it would have been even more influential for me at that time of my life. I have also been going insane over the subtitle of the book "the necessity of violence". Talking about it would mean a lot of spoilers so I won't get into deep, but after finishing the novel that in particular really stayed with me and it's been at the core of most of my thoughts about the book. I do wonder why the Italian translation didn't keep it, as the only subtitle in this edition is "an arcane history". This review feels more like a post-reading rant, but this is everything my brain can produce at the moment. Hopefully it was enough to convince a few people to add this novel to their tbr pile.

The DM's Excerpts - Charles III: New King, New Court
Robert Hardman (who also wrote Queen of Our Times, published 2022) has written a new book about the British Royal Family. The Daily Mail is serializing parts of the book over four days, from 12 - 15 January 2024. Here are the links. If anyone has any others, feel free to share them in the comments.
If you don't want to give the DM clicks, I've included highlights below. (My browser doesn't recognize archive.vn or archive.ph as a valid domain so I can't create or access those links.)
TL;DR--
The day the Queen died, 12 Jan 2024
Secret summits over making Charles regent in Queen's last years, 13 Jan 2024
How the royals have dealt with a torrent of allegations from Harry and Meghan, 14 Jan 2024
Harmdan's intimate portrait of a woman who dances at Abba concerts, jabs the King with her handbag and 'knows when to wink at a bishop,' 15 Jan 2024
Excerpt #1, 12 Jan 2024
Highlights:
The last time most of her staff saw The Queen was at the pre-dinner cocktails the evening of September 6th. She was happy, chatty, and in a good mood. (September 6th was the Boris Johnson-Liz Truss transition.)
It was sheer luck that Anne and Peter were at Balmoral during this time. Anne was passing through for work, Peter was preparing for a shooting party he was going to host over the weekend (which ended up cancelled). Also Sarah Chatto was nearby.
On September 7th, The Queen planned to attend the Privy Council meeting as it involved new Cabinet officials being installed. She eventually cancelled on medical advice. This was the first signal to many that she wasn't doing well.
Charles and Camilla were on the western side of Scotland for a series of engagements September 7 - September 8. The morning of September 8, Anne called Charles to come to Balmoral at once. On the helicopter to Balmoral, everyone was reviewing the Operation London Bridge papers. They arrived at Birkhall around 10:30am and traveled to Balmoral in a borrowed car.
William was called around breakfast time and informed of the situation, including that was on his way to Balmoral. Charles himself called William (and Andrew, Edward, and Harry) that they should also come. After Charles's calls, Kensington Palace began coordinating with Royal Lodge (Andrew's office*) and Bagshot Park (Edward's office*) on travel to Scotland. William and KP did not reach out to the Sussexes because betrayal, and they felt the responsibility should have been on the Sussexes to make contact. (*Not really their offices, but it's the easiest way to keep them separate so you know who I'm talking about.)
Everyone was disturbed by Harry's inclusion of these events, especially the "Meghan's not coming/she's my wife/Kate's not coming either/that's all you had to say" bit, in his memoir. Harry's recollection of how he was notified of The Queen's death isn't true - he claims no one was talking to him but actually Charles and the palace had been trying to reach him repeatedly. The calls weren't going through because he was in the air. (Interesting that he'd check the BBC first as opposed to calling back after seeing a dozen of missed calls...or not springing for the wifi package...)
Liz Truss, the new PM, was in a G7 conference call on September 8th when she was notified of the situation in Scotland. She bowed out of the call early and quickly. The G7 leaders knew what was happening.
Charles was rather close to Balmoral when he received the call that The Queen had passed. William, Andrew, Edward, and Sophie were on the way to Balmoral from the Aberdeen airport. Charles called them himself to let them know.
The Archbishop of Canterbury was in France on a personal holiday. He and his wife began preparing to return home after seeing the palace's first statement about The Queen's health. They drove home overnight so Welby could make an address in the morning.
Excerpt #2, 13 Jan 2024
Highlights:
The Queen had been quite ill in her final year. She knew and was aware her time was ending that summer.
A regency would have been created had she lived as long as The Queen Mother because everyone was fearful of a health condition flaring up in public.
Planning for Charles's accession and coronation began in 2015. Sir Alderton, his private secretary, created a "training video" of the accession/transition then that Charles, Camilla, and William watched in the evening of September 8th during their private dinner at Birkhall, while Princess Anne hosted the rest of the family at Balmoral. If Harry wasn't such a dick (my word, not Hardman's), he'd have been part of the Birkhall dinner but he wasn't and there were very serious concerns he would write about it in Spare.
The announcement of The Queen's death was delayed because family members hadn't been informed yet. (I think it was Harry they were waiting on, per the events in the first article.)
The royals were very touched by the outpouring of public affection for The Queen, themselves, and their family. Camilla was struck by how supportive the crowd was of her. Anne was touched by the tractors, horses, and the crowds that lined the roads in Scotland. It was a six hour drive, and she and Tim had had snacks in their car but they both felt it would have been rude to everyone that came to see the procession and pay their respects to be seen eating.
Camilla sobbed through Charles's first speech.
The Privy Council were concerned that the political upheaval in the government would cause problems for the accession, transition, and royal mourning.
It was William's idea for him, Kate, and the Sussexes to do the Windsor walkabout together. He organized it in two hours. No one found it easy or enjoyable.
Excerpt #3, 14 Jan 2024
Highlights:
The Queen felt she had to say 'yes' when Harry contacted her about naming his daughter Lilibet and she was very angry with him for it. (Reading between the lines, it sounds like the decision was presented by the Sussexes as "fait accompli" and The Queen took offense.)
The Sussexes tried to force the palace to go along with their version (that they had asked The Queen for permission) but the palace refused to play. They also tried to intimidate the press with legal action if anyone didn't report "their" version of events, even going so far as threatening the BBC with a lawsuit.
Everyone at the palace rolled their eyes about the Sussexes getting the RFK "Ripple of Hope Award." They felt that the "legacy" the Sussexes were being rewarded for was laughable, especially when compared to Charles's work.
The Caribbean gets its news through the US media. (I believe this confirms the theory that Sussex PR influenced the Caribbean's coverage of the Royal Family)
William saw Harry's comments in the Netflix documentary that they're expected to marry someone who fits the mold as an attack on Kate and he's been furious since. He feels betrayed by Harry having discussed their relationship so freely, thinks it's an intrusion of privacy.
Neither William nor Kate have read Spare but they are aware of what's being said and their staffs have briefed them.
Harry's version of events when The Queen Mother died is totally made up. (In Spare, Harry says he was alone, it was springtime just before Easter, and he took the call himself, but actually he was in Switzerland skiing with Charles and William and all three were told together by an aide.)
It's very suspicious that Spare largely skips May 2018 - March 2020. The palace thinks it'll be covered in the second version or Meghan's memoir.
The door is open for Harry and Meghan to return but they'll have to make the first steps since Charles has given up.
Anne's seat the coronation in front of Harry was a last-minute change so she could leave more quickly after the service in the procssion. She was concerned about keeping her hat on since it was "decent-sized" but she was told to keep it on.
Excerpt #4, 15 Jan 2024 - TBD
Highlights
It's been a difficult transition to Queen for Camilla, but everyone believes she handled it well. Her family finds it surreal.
Camilla doesn't mind being second fiddle to Charles.
She still has her Wiltshire home, Ray Mill, which she bought after divorcing Andrew PB. She still visits and stays there to this day.
Everyone walks a bit on eggshells around Charles because he's a bit temperamental, but Camilla steadies him.
Camilla likes her rooms hot. Charles like his rooms cold and windows open.
Charles skips lunch. Camilla does not.
Camilla keeps Charles running on time when he gets chatty.
Camilla is hands-on with her charities and patronage.
I find her sister is overstaying her welcome. After her starring role in the coronation documentary and now her interviews with Hardman for the book, it's too much and feels like she's trying too hard.
Other stories by Hardman from his book:
Foreign Office officials 'ditched buses for dignitaries' at coronation after backlash at the Queen's funeral, 13 Jan 2024
Brigadier who helped carry Queen's coffin was at a wedding in Corfu, 13 Jan 2024
Queen's funeral rehearsal was a comedy of errors as even the band went AWOL, 13 Jan 2024
Prince Andrew could be 'far more damaging outside the loop,' 14 Jan 2024
The DM's other royal reporters - Martin Robinson, Rebecca English, Natasha Livingstone - are publishing "recaps" of Hardman's excerpts. Some of Rebecca English's stories are augmented by her own sources. Here are a few:
Insiders revewal how the Queen was so upset by Harry and Meghan's Lilibet decision that she told aides 'the only thing I own is my name. And now they've taken that': The royal row taht troubled Her Majesty in twilight of her reign, 15 Jan 2024
'For William, this was the lwoest of the low,' 15 Jan 2024
Camilla was given the affection nickname 'Lorraine' before seh became Queen, 14 Jan 2024
Harry and Meghan likely caused Queen 'distress' in her final years over naming of baby Lilibet, 15 Jan 2024
The Queen's final years were overshadowed by Harry and Meghan's hunger for publicity, 15 Jan 2024
Also, these are reminding me of some things Harry and Meghan (Harry mostly) have claimed and Hardman's articles are debunking them. I need to do a bit of research to check if the dates on what I'm remembering line up with the timeline Hardman is presenting. I'll do a separate post on that since this is already quite long.

Hi, WQA! Thank you so much for all the advice you give! I'm not sure if you can help me out with my problem, so feel free to ignore me. For the last couple of months, I've been very motivated and I've been able to write quite a lot. I was so happy about it and excited to share my stories, but I've barely had any response by the people that read them. It has had a negative effect on me, and I'm slowly and surely losing the motivation to continue writing. So, I guess my question is, how/what can I do to continue writing even though I feel bad and I lose my motivation everytime that I get no response to my stories? Thank you!
Motivation Lost Due to Low Audience Engagement
This is a common thing for writers, whether it's low audience engagement on a fiction-sharing site, lack of ratings/reviews, or low book sales. However, the reality about publication is that there's a lot of competition and it can take a lot of time and effort to find an audience. Every story doesn't garner tons of engagement, and every book doesn't sell a ton of copies. So if you put a lot of weight in those things, the truth is you're bound to be disappointed. For that reason, it's very helpful for most writers to put more weight in the act of writing and publishing, but then let it go after that. Don't pay too much attention to ratings, reviews, comments, etc. And if you can't help glancing at them, just remember that a lack of visible engagement doesn't translate to a lack of interest. People can read your story without rating or leaving a comment, and they can read your book without buying it or rating it or leaving a review. Not engaging doesn't mean they didn't like it--it's just the reality that people don't usually take the time to engage unless their like or dislike was extreme. People don't often engage if they simply enjoyed something.
So... put more weight in what you get out of writing and sharing your stories. Try not to pay attention to ratings, reviews, comments, and sales--but if you do and they're low, remember that doesn't mean people aren't reading your stories/books or that people aren't enjoying them. Write for the people who love your stories, even if they don't always take the time to tell you so. And know that the more you write and share, the more your audience is likely to build, so in time, you may see that engagement build. There are a lot of free author summits, workshops, talks, guides, and articles that offer tips on how to build your audience and increase engagement, so you might find those helpful as well. ♥

Book Review: Book 2: The Art of Everyday Assertiveness (a 9-part series by Patrick King, “Be Confident and Fearless.”)
Book one review here.
I found this book had 20% of the content from the first book so I’ve avoided putting the same things again and again in this review.
Forward identifies these overwhelming feelings as the three underlying components in emotional blackmail: fear, obligation, and guilt (FOG).
The four types of blackmail:
1. The punisher’s threat occurs when the victim receives this message from the perpetrator: “Do what I want, or you will suffer negative consequences.”
2. The self-punisher’s threat takes advantage of the victim’s sense of guilt by sending the message, “Do what I want, or I will make myself suffer negative consequences.” Often this scenario includes high drama.
3. Closely related to the self-punisher’s threat is the sufferer’s threat. Rather than the threat of self-harm, the manipulator in this situation says, “Do what I want, or I will suffer negative consequences from the outside.” Consequences are external and not self-inflicted.
4. The final form of emotional blackmail is identified as the tantalizer’s threat. Rather than threatening a negative consequence, the perpetrator sends the message, “Do what I want, and you might enjoy positive consequences.”
-
The key to avoiding victimization is by taking time and learning to recognize feelings of fear, obligation, and guilt. This can be achieved by asking a few very simple questions:
“Am I not asserting myself by my own free will? Is this truly what I want, or is there a reason related to fear, obligation, or guilt?”
“Am I acting out of anxiety or excitement?”
-
Asking for help:
1. Ask and then stop talking.
Don’t follow up your ask with things like “only if you want”, “its up to you” etc.
2. Create a win win.
When asking for something from the other person, ask yourself:
- Are their needs being considered?
- How can this request benefit them?
- Is this a good time to make such a request?
- If the tables were turned, how would I view this request?
3. Make it easy.
Do not expect people to go out of their way in order for you to request a favor. Instead of your natural inclination to hedge with “Can we meet? Only if you have time,” you can substitute it with “Can we meet? Lunch is on me at your favorite sandwich place.” The key here is to make your ask smaller than it needs to be so it will be better received, and easier to squeeze out.
4. Offer clear cut options
if you are asking for someone to watch your dog, offer to take him to their place or let them stay at your place and use your building’s gym facilities while you are out of town. Also, make sure they have a way to say no without feeling guilty in case they cannot or do not want to do what you have asked.
5. Be direct.
Don’t have any ulterior moves. Express the ask as it is in your mind.
6. Be specific
Don’t ask vague, open ended questions. Inform them where they can exactly help you.
7. If someone says no, don’t be disheartened.
-
Types of assertion:
1. Empathic: acknowledge their feelings, appreciate them but be firm with your stance.
2. Consequence: a last resort if someone has made you reach the end of your tolerance. State what they did; how it made you feel; and the consequence of them not apologising/ taking responsibility.
3. Negative feelings: describe their (unwanted/ unjust) behaviour objectively, directly and specifically. Tell them how it impacted your describe your feelings as exactly as you can. State your preferred behaviour. “When you didn’t show up at the date we had planned, I had to cancel our reservations and felt embarrassed and hurt. In the future, could you just call me if you can’t make it?”
4. Discrepancy: when something happens due to a misunderstanding, lack of follow ups or unclear inventions. “I thought we were meeting for coffee at noon. Was I mistaken?”
-
In a 2010 study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers analyzed people’s reactions to selfish versus generous actions in a game about rewards. They found that instead of appreciating the generous players, these were actually as equally disliked as the selfish ones. You may have tried taking on the dirty jobs nobody else wants or paying a bar tab at a work party in the hope it would endear you to a group. This is actually likely to have the opposite effect; your extreme generosity makes people just as uncomfortable as the selfish people who make life more difficult or refuse to contribute.
-
University of Notre Dame Researchers in 2011 found that disagreeable employees earned more than their agreeable counterparts. Disagreeable men earned 18% more than agreeable men. Agreeableness is a more socially expected norm in women, but disagreeable women still earned 5% more than the agreeable women, and these agreeable women lagged far behind the disagreeable men.
-
Communication styles: figure out your pattern in order to break it:
1. Passive
- low self esteem
- Dont express opinions or desires
- Avoidant
- Anger can build up quietly over time and then erupt
- Weak eye contact
- Bad posture
- Dont understand their own needs
2. Aggressive
- verbal, physical violence
- Put their own needs before others
- Overbearing
- Intense eye contact
- Poor listeners
- Impulsive
- Criticises 24/7
3. Passive aggressive
- appear to be “fine” but are not fine inside
- Sarcastic often
- Alienate themselves
- Sabotage
4. Assertive
- speaking up for themselves
- Clear
- Direct
- Good listeners
- High self esteem
- Open, relaxed body language
- Can navigate any situation without resentment, anger or loss of control
The passive communicator says, “People walk all over me,” and “No one cares how I feel about this.”
The aggressive communicator says, “I always get what I want—whatever it takes,” and “You’re worthless; you owe me.”
The passive-aggressive communicator says, “That’s fine . . . (That’s what you think),” and “They’ll see what happens to people who cross me.”
The assertive communicator says, “We’re both entitled to respectfully express our opinion,” and “I’m responsible for myself and no one owes me anything.”
-
Before you start to apologize, stop and ask yourself two questions:
“Did I actually do something wrong?”
And if not, “Did I really want to communicate that I think I did?”
If you over apologise, ask yourself:
1. What’s the first reaction you have when someone tells you no?
2. Was advocating on your own behalf off-limits in your family? Was it encouraged?
3. When you were younger, was it acceptable to speak up and share your opinion?
4. What other major experiences shaped your outlook regarding asserting yourself and respecting authority, particularly at the workplace?
-
Confronting a dominant personality doesn’t have to be combative. Simply ask, “Are you open for feedback on this?” If they say yes, which most people will, you can start by saying, “I tend to think of these things from a different perspective.” It keeps the conversation neutral. You’re not attacking their point of view. Instead, you’re just sharing yours.
-
Dr. Beth Polin, an assistant professor of management at Eastern Kentucky University and coauthor of The Art of the Apology, defines an apology as a statement that includes one or more of six components:
1. An expression of regret: This is the actual “I’m sorry” statement.
2. An explanation: This is a clarification of what happened, not a justification.
3. An acknowledgment of responsibility: In other words, owning up to your mistakes.
4. A declaration of repentance: For example, “I truly regret what I did.”
5. An offer of repair: “Maybe I can turn this around.”
6. A request for forgiveness: “I know I messed up, but I’m truly sorry and I’m asking your forgiveness.”
-
Assertiveness action plan:
1. Write down the times in your life where you have not felt assertive (been laughed at, walked all over, taken advantage of, etc)
2. Write down how you reacted (can be good/ bad/ neutral)
3. Write down the healthy response you would’ve given in that situation
4. Write a list of what you should avoid using from your internal dialogue or with other people. Also write a list of phrases that you feel more comfortable with that are also assertive.
- the author has a full schedule/ plan for 26 days on the assertiveness action plan with exercises. I didnt include everything, but i included things that I feel I can do.

Rowaelin Month Day Ten: Co-Stars With Chemistry @rowaelinscourt
Find Part One Here Rowaelin Month Masterlist
Thanks for all the kind words on part one! I hope part two lives up to your expectations! Part three, and the conclusion, will come later this month. Bonus points if you spot the "against the tide" reference ;)
Warnings: None, right around 4k words
.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.
The Words We Share-Part Two
<<Welcome to Terrasen!  I’m your host Aelin Galathynius and this week we’ve got a special episode coming your way.  We’ll be live with none other than Rowan Whitethorn to discuss his new book.  Dead Man’s Game is his first step into fantasy and a twisted tale of pirates, curses, and of course a dive into Scottish history.  Join us next week in a special LIVE episode.  Until next time, readers.>>
It wasn’t the worst promotional Aelin had ever done in her life.  But it also wasn’t the best.  She’d written and scrapped over a dozen and so far, that was the one that hadn’t sucked the most.  Somehow.
Aelin stared at the blinking square on her computer that asked if she wanted to publish the message or not.  Technically she could still turn down the interview.  She could tell Dorian off and ignore Whitethorn for the rest of his existence and move on with her life.  And then she’d probably lose her job and end up homeless.
Wincing, she clicked the button and immediately spun away from her computer.
Her office, big and bright and vibrant, had a large window that overlooked downtown.  In the distance the mountains were shrouded in a thick layer of clouds, not surprising but a little disappointing.  She much preferred her summer months warm and clear.  Still, she let herself admire the view and took a moment to appreciate the stillness of the day.
Until her gaze landed on her phone.
There were a handful of messages from Sam that she’d left unread.  He’d tried calling her after she’d returned home, but she didn’t pick up.  Rowan was still on her mind.  Rowan and his stupid accent and his stupidly large hands.  How was it that someone she hated (and who hated her in return) could treat her to the best date she’d been on in months?  Years?
She didn’t know.  And she didn’t want to call Elide to talk to her about it because Elide was a meddlesome little minx.
Now as Aelin stared at her phone, she found herself wondering if there was anything Sam could say that would have her forgive him.
Whoever stood you up is an idiot, Rowan had said.
And…maybe he was right.
A knock at the door was the only thing that snagged her attention.  She looked over to see Dorian leaning against her doorway.
“Aelin,” he greeted.  He had his usual grin in place, black hair in an easy disarray.  His blue eyes shone with too much placating humor.
“I hate you.”  It wasn’t an exaggeration either.  He was really good at being annoying.
“Oh, c’mon, I’m doing you a favor,” Dorian insisted.  He didn’t look the least bit apologetic. “I guarantee this’ll get your viewership up.”
“Not even Chaol is this mean,” Aelin said.  She slumped down in her seat, tilting her head back against the chair rest.
“You only like him because he brings in chocolate cake,” Dorian said.
“Yeah and he isn’t an ass like you.” Aelin continued glaring at her boss and friend, picking up her pen to scratch at the pad of paper beside her desk, just for something to do.
“Aelin, Rowan’s our best-selling author, not to mention the demand of getting more events from him like this.” Dorian picked an invisible piece of lint from his shirt and shrugged. “Hate him all you want, but our readers and your listeners have been begging for this.”
Aelin had seen requests forms on their website, she’d been to plenty of conventions and heard the reviews—she knew that Dorian was right.  But…
“I like Whitethorn even less than you,” Aelin said.  Though, the words sounded hollow in her own ears.
Dorian didn’t seem to notice. “Yeah, yeah.  I’ll take you out to dinner to make up.”
Aelin had had enough of men propositioning her for dinner.  She waved Dorian off.
“Go be the big CEO man, I’ve gotta write this script and get the general outline to Whitethorn,” she said.
Dorian left with a wave of his hand.
Aelin rolled her eyes and pulled up a new document on her computer.  A small notification bar in the corner of the screen indicated views on the recent upload.  In the span of three minutes there were already over two hundred views and the number was rapidly rising.
She glanced at the large stack of paper still sitting in the corner of her desk.  She’d gotten it just last week—the tell-tale mysterious new novel Rowan had written.  Even Dorian said it was remarkable.  Aelin had yet to view it since it was no longer a part of her job description to edit and critique manuscripts.  But since she’d be interviewing Rowan, she got early access to the novel.
In truth, she’d enjoyed Rowan’s work.  There was always something about it, even if she did mark up every page with as much red as she could manage.  But, really?  Most of the comments weren’t negative.  Often, she even found herself praising the way a sentence worked or the callbacks he gave to earlier chapters.
Now, having the manuscript before her, Aelin couldn’t help but feel a little excited at having the book before her.
At least this would be enough of a distraction for her.
It wasn’t until the sun began to set and shadows crawled across the walls of her office, that Aelin finally looked up from the manuscript.
And to her phone that lit up with another message.
Cursing, Aelin opened the chat with Sam.
>>Sam: you can’t keep ignoring me.
<<Aelin: I told you I needed time.
>>Sam: It was one night. we’ll have dozens more.
Aelin scoffed at the surety in his words.  Shaking her head Aelin sent one last message.
<<Aelin: I’m done.  This is over.  I can’t keep playing games and being a placeholder.
>>Sam: We’ll talk in the morning.
He could try calling her, but would find it difficult considering she was blocking his number that very moment.
It felt good to set that boundary, to tell him no, to feel like she was in control.
In all honesty, she was still caught up on spending time with Rowan Whitethorn and not tossing her wine on him.  He’d been a gentleman, an ass, but respectful all the same.  She would have to thank him for helping her that night despite how much she didn’t want to.  He didn’t need to step in and give her an excuse to use against Kaltain.  And he certainly didn’t need to pay for dinner and make sure she got into a cab safely.  He hadn’t needed to do any of it and she hadn’t expected him to.  But he had.
She wanted to be irritated at him for it.  She wasn’t a damsel in distress for him to take care of or who needed help to begin with.  She would have dealt with Kaltain on her own just fine.
Still, it was nice to have someone looking out for her.
Shaking her head, Aelin flipped through the manuscript to the first page once again.
She had a dream, once, years ago, where she would stand out on a rocky shoreline and stare into the ocean as she wondered just how far she could sail before the world swallowed her whole.
Between screaming Fall Out Boy lyrics, two impromptu dance parties, and chugging half an energy drink in the parking garage of the publishing building—Aelin finally found herself ready to face the inevitability of the day.
“It’s going to be fine,” she told herself one more time as she fixed her lipstick in the rearview mirror. “Everything is going to be fine.”
It had been her mantra that she prepared for the live podcast she would be filming that day.  For the first time in a very long time, Aelin found herself nervous for the day.  And she did not get nervous.  No, Aelin prided herself on being confident, capable, and being able to keep her head on straight.
That was before she’d read Rowan’s book, though.
She got out of her car, energy drink and manuscript in hand, and headed up to her office to prepare for the interview.
She hadn’t had any issue in reading Rowan's book.  In fact, she’d stayed up the entire night just to finish it.  Everything about the book had captured her attention.  From the magic to the world building to the romance—it had all been just what she loved most in a book.  Even if the book wasn’t as spicy as Aelin preferred to get in her books, there had been something real about the way Rowan chose the write this novel.
And now she’d have to tell him.
She was not looking forward to it if she were being honest.  For as much as she loved gushing about novels and diving into different worlds and characters…she’d never done so about one of Rowan’s books. And this book was so different from his other books.
Aelin felt far too jittery as she waited for the elevator.  The usual crowds all milled about her, all too concerned with their own issues to give her much credence.  She didn’t know if that was better or worse.
She hadn’t felt this way about an interview in ages.  Only her first real podcast session had been as bad and that was only because she’d gone into in on no sleep and four shots of espresso.
The elevator slowly lumbered up to the proper floor while Aelin paced the small space.  Thankfully no one else was in here with her.  That would have just been icing on the cake.
“It’s going to be a great day and everything is going to be fine,” she told herself as the doors slid open to the proper floor.  Dorian of course was standing right there, leaning against the far wall.
His black hair was styled perfectly out of his face, his smirk ever present. He gave one last twist to the new wedding band on his finger as Aelin stepped out of the elevator and began walking to her studio.
“You ready for today?” he asked, keeping stride with her easily.
“Of course, I am,” she replied.  Her confidence was deceiving, but it was something she’d practiced ever since she was a child who wanted to get out of trouble. “It’s just like any other podcast.”
Dorian made a noise in the back of his throat. “This is potentially the biggest release our company—”
“I know, Dorian.” Aelin stopped outside her studio and handed Dorian the mess of energy drink and notes she was carrying so she could unlock the door. “I’m not an idiot.”
Dorian followed her inside and she caught a sheepish smile on his face. “Sorry.  I know you know.  And I know you’ll take this seriously.  Just…try not to hate on him too much, yeah?”
It was no secret really that Aelin and Rowan had a slight rivalry going on.  At least, Dorian was the only one really aware of it.  And Elide.  But Elide was the best at keeping secrets herself.
“Can I tease him about the fated mates trope?” she asked.
“No.”
“Boo.”  Aelin took her things back from him and rolled her eyes. “Do you want to read through my notes?  Give me your approval, oh great one?”
He was already walking back out of the studio, waving a hand overhead. “Behave!”
Aelin snorted a laugh; she’d been granted honorary approval to go to his bachelor party three months ago; if anyone needed to behave it was him.  She wondered partially if his wife actually realized what she’d gotten into.
No matter.
Aelin settled into her usual routine upon arriving at the office in the morning.  If she kept things as normal as possible, they were bound to work out, right?
So she bounced between her actual office and the studio for the next hour, running through her questions and side comments she could make about various points and ideas she’d highlighted from Rowan’s book.
Elide stopped by a few times to give her a countdown to when the podcast would air.  The other woman was technically an acquisitions editor, but Aelin was going to try and steal her to be her assistant.  That would piss Kaltain off.
When there was ten minutes left until they were slated to begin.  Aelin went to the studio to make sure everything was ready.  She usually made sure the couch and chair were angled properly first with microphones at the ready before ensuring a blanket and a few pillows were easy to reach.  Not that she thought Rowan would want to snuggle up with a puppy studded fleece blanket—it was the thought that counted.
She was just organizing her desk with her notes and her copy of Rowan’s manuscript when she heard Elide’s voice down the hall.
“She’s just down this way.”
Aelin gave everything one final look in the studio before deciding that was just as good as it was going to get.  After all, everything was neat and organized.  Except the bookshelves.  Those were pure chaos.  But in Aelins opinion, keeping bookshelves looking perfect was a useless task.
Elide rounded the open door, looking far too amused by what was about to unfold.
“Hey Aelin,” she said, leaning against the jam.  Her black hair hung in loose waves and her expression was carefully impassive—though that gleam in her eyes was hard to miss. “I found your next interview in the halls.”
Sure enough, standing behind her was Rowan.  He was dressed casually, far more casual than she’d ever seen him before.  No dress shirt or tie, no slacks, no fancy shoes worth more than her car.  It was a startling contrast to when he’d saved her at the restaurant.  Even his hair was different.  Not that it was bad.  The man had good hair.
“Thanks, Elide,” Aelin said with a smile.  She hadn’t been staring too much, had she?
“Let me know if you need anything,” Elide said.  There was no mistaking her brow raise as she departed.
Oh, Aelin was certainly going to be interrogated later this afternoon.  She stuffed that away far in the back of her mind.
“Come on in, Mr. Whitethorn.”  Aelin gestured him into the room and swung the door shut behind him. “Have a seat on the couch, we’ve got a few minutes.”
She was going to keep this professional and dignified.  All she had to do was get through the next forty-five minutes and then this would be over.  Fifty if she took in time for ads and brief intermission in the middle.
“You can call me Rowan, you know,” he said as he took up an easy position on the couch.  His silver hair was, as usual, perfectly styled and left his handsome face on display.  “After the restaurant and everything.”
Aelin had to fight to keep from glaring too much at him.  Though she did end up pursing her lips tightly enough that her lipstick was definitely going to smudge.
“I think we should agree to never talk about that night.  Ever.”  True nothing that embarrassing had come of it, other than a hit to Aelin’s pride, but talking about it would only lead to more people hearing about it.  And she really didn’t trust Whitethorn not to tease her about it.  Besides, talking about getting stood up by a guy she’d wasted too much time on, to Whitethorn of all people, was not something she wanted to do.
Especially considering she’d spent a great deal of time in the last week thinking about how handsome Rowan actually was.
Rowan only smiled as he watched her shuffle her notes and papers.  Aelin knew if she met his gaze that she would let something slip so she avoided eye contact.  She'd gotten good at that.
"If you need water, there's a mini fridge under that end table,” Aelin told him.  “Or I can get you a coffee real quick?”
“Water’s fine,” Rowan said.  He reached for the fridge and pulled out one of the plastic bottles chilling. “I'm curious though, did you forgive the man who stood you up?  Or did he have a reasonable explanation?"
"It's none of your business," Aelin replied stiffly.  This was a mistake.  Maybe she could call Elide in here to act as a buffer.  "Do you want a look at some of the questions I have planned or are you okay going in blind?"
Rowan shrugged. "I'm always up for a bit of fun."
Aelin didn't have a response for that so she spent the last few minutes until airing explaining to Rowan how the microphone worked.  He could mute himself if he needed to cough or anything like that, but ultimately, she had control over sounds volume and everything along those lines.
"Do your worst," he told her as she opened the podcast.
"Welcome to Terrasen, listeners and readers alike," Aelin said, still glaring at Rowan. "As you know, today's session is going to be extra fun and special as we have Rowan Whitethorn with us for the first time.  I know many of you have asked about having him on the show as well as have been interested in what he's been working on recently, so here we are."
She paused for a brief moment in preparation. "Rowan, thanks so much for taking the time to join us today."
"Thanks, Aelin," he said, leaning into the mic just a little.  His accent lilted in that familiar way and he looked far too at ease sitting across from her.  His watch clicked happily along on his wrist catching the light as he clasped his hands together. "It's good to be here.  I've been a long-time listener."
Liar.  "Really?  What have been some of your favorite episodes?"  She'd catch him out and not feel the least bit sorry for it either.
"Well, the series about what makes a romance book was rather interesting, I have to say.  Especially your comments on smut," he grinned at her and Aelin flipped him of.  At least this wasn't a video session too.
"I like a bit of fun," she dryly, throwing his own words back at him. "Good to know what keeps you entertained."
"Oh, I like hiking too."
"Right," Aelin snatched on to that with the sole goal of getting out of the current conversation. "Which is something you grew up doing a lot of right?  You grew up in Scottland?"
"Aye, just outside of Edinburgh," Rowan said. "Moved to America when I was seventeen, but most of my summers I went back to stay with my cousins."
"Do you miss it?" Aelin asked. "From what I've read in your books the landscape the history, the people, it's all so beautiful and wonderful and rich."
"Aye," Rowan ran a hand over his chin. "It'll always be a part of me.  My da taught me everything about the outdoors and nature and adventuring as he could before he passed, that's why I moved to America.  So my mum could be near family.  And growing up without him just left a hole in my heart, y'know?  So writing and research just turned into a way for me to remember him.”
Aelin tried to ignore the effect of his words.  She knew what that was like exactly.
“Right,” she agreed, “sometimes telling stories is the best way to remember someone, or something.”
Rowan met her gaze again and something flashed in his eyes as he nodded his agreement.
“Plus, it’s an easy way to relieve stress,” he added. “With all the research I’ve done, y’know I spent every day for three months training with a group of tae kwon do specialists just to learn how to describe one fight scene properly?”
From there, it was easy for Aelin to continue asking him about writing and research and why he’d chosen non-fiction to begin with.  Just like the night at the restaurant—it was far to easy to talk to him.  Far too easy to have this simple, easy-going conversation with him.
In fact, it had been a long time since she’d been able to talk like this to anyone.  Which, maybe wasn’t a good thing.  Most of this was scripted anyways not to mention Rowan had done plenty of other interviews and certainly had many of these responses memorized.
Hell.
She’d started reading too much into this.
“So,” Aelin said as they were nearing the end of the segment. “I’m still surprised you actually made the leap in to fiction—fantasy no less.  And with a lead character like Celaena Sardothien.”
“You’re surprised I can write a female main character?”  Rowan chuckled.  He’d rolled up the sleeves to his shirt a while ago, one of his arms in a full tattoo sleeve.  She couldn’t understand whatever language the majority of the tattoos were in but she did recognize a few Gaelin words and symbols in the mix.
“Well, yes.”
“C’mon, Galathynius,” he said, “even you have to admit you liked my book.  I did a good job.  Especially with Celaena.”
“Do I though?  You should see all the marks I made on the manuscript.”  In truth there weren’t very many, at least not as many as she had given in the past.  But she would add some if it would shut him up.
“The book hits all your favorite tropes,” Rowan said.  He wore that all knowing smirk of his that had been infuriating (and fine, fascinating) her for the last forty-five minutes.
“How do you even know what I like?”
Rowan chuckled, a sound that hit Aelin like a shot to the heart. “We’ve been friends for five years.”
“We’re not friends,” Aelin corrected, but there was no malice in her words.
“Please Galathynius,” he insisted, “you like me.”
“Shut up Whitethorn.”  Aelin muted him as burst into laughter and she had to fight to keep her own voice even as she addressed her listeners. “We’ve just had a great conversation with novelist, Rowan Whitethorn about his upcoming high fantast adventure Dead Man’s Game which will be released on November fifteenth.  Thanks for listening friends, we’ll see you next time.”
She made all the necessary clicks and flicks to shut the mics down properly and just like that the segment was over.  Looking up, Aelin scowled at Rowan.  She’d been doing that a lot hadn’t she?
“Seriously?” she asked.
“Are we really not friends?”  Rowan finally leaned back in his seat.  Even that small bit of distance was enough that Aelin felt she could finally take a breath of air.
The table between them wasn’t even that big but being close to him had put her heart in overdrive and made her mind feel like a pile of mush.
“Whitethorn,” she said, ignoring his small eyeroll at the use of his last name, “we both know the extent of our “relationship” has been insulting each other.”
That made him pause and another look flashed across his features, one Aelin couldn’t identify.  But it made her squirm all the same.  So, she launched herself out of her seat.  She didn’t want to think about anything beyond being done with this segment and maybe having some peace of mind.
“It was a live session,” she told him, “so you can listen to it whenever.  I think Dorian had a few extra things he needed to get you relating to your edits.”
Aelin needed to shut down whatever emotions were cutting through her.  It wouldn’t do good to dwell on them or Rowan longer than necessary.  This was just a passing occurrence.  Eventually he would leave their publishing house—or get so big as a name that he couldn’t be bothered with her silly little podcast.
Not that she cared.  Or that it mattered.
Slowly, Rowan stood from his seat, his eyes trained on her. “Do I get your edits?”
Aelin blinked. “What?”
“Your edits?  All the notes and thoughts you had on the manuscript?” He didn’t move to leave like she expected him to.  He just kept waiting for her answer.
“I—” she paused. “You really want them?”
“Of course,” he said, “your thoughts have always been invaluable to me.”
She’d never really understand that word: invaluable.  Oh she knew what it meant and that Rowan said it as a compliment, but it had always struck her as an asinine and bland way of describing somethings true worth.  Rowan regarded her with such sincerity that Aelin was already reaching for the giant stack of papers from where she’d left it on the edge of her desk.
For some reason, she was hesitant on giving him the pages.  It wasn’t like she’d struggled with this before.  As she held the manuscript out for him, however, she felt shy.  And Aelin damned Galathynius was not shy.  Mala above.
“Ignore what you don’t like,” she said, just as she always did.
“Thank-you,” Rowan said.  He tucked the papers into his arm and, finally, retreated for the door.
“Wh—” Aelin paused mentally cursing herself, “Rowan?”
He turned, hand on the doorknob.
“Where did Celaena’s character come from?” she asked, it was the one question they didn’t get into during the interview, but the one that intrigued her most. “She’s brilliant, strong, and has to be inspired by someone.  Who?”
A small smile quirked one side of his lips as he pushed the door open. “I thought it was obvious.”
And then he was out the door, swallowed up by a shout from Dorian calling him into his office.
Aelin could only stare after him.  And just like the night of that insufferable date—she was left confused and uncertain about what his words actually meant.
