Discovering Hopepunk

Did y'all know that the best thing in the world is friends who teach you new words? Because it's thanks to a friend close enough to be a brother that I have a word for what Naomi Novik's incredible Scholomance trilogy is. Time to meet hopepunk.

Hopepunk is brand-spanking new on the literature scene, and the term itself is attributable to author Alexandra Rowland, who coined the term in 2017. Collins English Dictionary picked it up in 2019, which is how you know it had enough traction to be legit.

So what is the definition of hopepunk? Rowland described it as "the opposite of grimdark" that is composed of "one atom of justice, one molecule of mercy, and the empire of unsheathed knives." Collins Dictionary is a little more precise in their definition: "A literary and artistic movement that celebrates the pursuit of positive aims in the face of adversity."

Novik's Scholomance trilogy begins with the world's deadliest boarding school and concludes with the truth of how a maw mouth is made, and all of those elements should objectively combine into a grimdark trilogy. And yet. El, her himbo hero, and kickass girlsquad refuse to go quietly into darkness and despair. They embody hope, resilience, and resistance to the toxic social order they have been raised I and are expected to perpetuate if they survive graduation--and that is the furthest thing from a guarantee.

El's journey from furiously pissed-off outcast and loner to Golden enclave crusader is never not compelling, and the insistent kindness for its own sake and radical hope that spits in the face of literal monsters in the literal walls means that hopelessness never touches this narrative. Sometimes things are *really bad* but it wouldn't be a story otherwise. The difference is that while George RR Martin is determined to beat the hope out of both his characters and his readers, Novik and El will beat it into you if they have to.

God, I will never not enjoy how surprised nearly all my younger students get when they find out how much I know about video games. Like... but you're my teacher... and you're nearly 30... and you're a woman... how can this be??? 🤯

#my favorite thing is when they start trying to convince me to play their favorite games and report back to them about what i thought of them #it's so cute #plus honestly they already normally get so shocked when they see my gaming laptop... then they find out i actually use it hahaha #i am proud of the fact that i've been told i type fast by 12 year olds... that is a real compliment... they type SO fast themselves #god... on another note one little girl once saw my laptop stickers and asked me what year i graduated from miskatonic university #and then i told her it's a fictional school and she said “oh so you didn't go to the college of winterhold either?” 😂#once one kid asked me if i have a husband and kids and when i said no to both of those she goes “oh i guess you're alone” 😂😂#and then i told her i live with my two best friends and we mostly play video games and board games and tabletop rpgs all day #and then she said she wants to do that too lol #i told her she should do whatever she thinks will make her happy ofc #it is just amusing when kids meet an adult who doesn't act the way they expect... but honestly they adapt to new info so fast #i mean ofc they do they are designed to learn basically everything is new to them #they are funny because they get so shocked and then instantly recover

Liam Payne is the worst witch at Mossbridge Boarding Academy and he absolutely knows it.

It’s not his fault that his potions always bubble over and his hat tends to disappear and more often than not his spells come out a little flat. He’s only a half-witch after all, he hasn’t grown up in the witchy community and his mum talks all the time about how it was a miracle that he was even able to get into the academy in the first place.

He’s trying his best, he really is. And he wants to be a good witch, he truly does! It’s just that he started out behind, and he only got more behind, and the other witches decided early on that he would only hold them back, so here he is going into his fifth and final year, the only witch in his class who isn’t part of a coven.

Mossbridge Boarding Academy for Young Witches is just not where Liam wants to be.

Louis knows that his tail is, frankly, stunning. His iridescent blue scales shimmer in even the slightest sunlight, and his fins have grown since he presented, delicate and almost transparent in their webbing.

He also knows that that means he’ll be one of the first to pick tonight, as the most beautiful omegas are blessed to pick their mates first. It’s considered a huge honour, since the guppies they’ll eventually birth will certainly be beautiful as well, bringing favour on the whole clan.

Louis has a stubborn streak, though. He’s always been rather a fan of mating for love, and there’s someone he’s had his eye on for a long time now.

ive said before that i hate iq being used as a 'this character is a genius' shorthand, bc iq tests are deliberately biased and the whole concept is probably pseudoscience, however it is very funny, to me, to imagine ~Genius~ characters sitting down in a little room with an iq tester and trying to figure out which shape completes the pattern.

imagine you're a psychologist who does iq tests and your last appointment for the day comes in and its a guy in a bat costume who swears you to secrecy and pays you five times your normal rate. i would quit my job and move.

#personally i assume tim's iq score comes from one of his boarding schools trying to give him an autism assessment #but never formally diagnosed him bc his parents switched his school after getting into a fight over whether he might actually be autistic #and Jack never actually checked his iq score bc janet handled the school paperwork #otherwise he would absolutely pull the 'my child has a Genius IQ which proves how good of a dad i am' card #[the author is projecting their past upon fictional characters again]

Flitora, Academy For Fairytales

Summary:

This was all wrong, Ainsley was not supposed to be here. It had become painstakingly clear to him that he just was not supposed to be at the academy from the very first moment he looked at the students. All the students had some sort of magic while Ainsley... did not. This was reasonable as he didn't even believe in magic up until his mother signed him up for the wrong boarding school...

After forcing himself to stay calm, Ainsley figured he needed to blend in-- lay low until he could figure out how to escape this situation.

Who's to say if he will succeed in his plans or not?
