Imagine you're in school, fall in love, and get pregnant. He comes from wealth, so you think you and your baby are going to live a nice cushy life with your new man. Then he gets mauled by a bear. He's eaten right in front of you. You grieve for him. You go to his family, hoping they'll take you in, but they're awful and they want to harm your baby. So you end up raising her alone. It's tough being a single mother, but you do your best to love and protect her. She grows up and goes to school. The school is known for its bear attacks, but what can you do? It's a good school, and you can only protect her so much. Eventually your baby has to fend for herself. You can't help but worry though. The cell service is terrible but you manage to reach her and warn her to stay away from bears. She seems happy though, and even tells you she's made friends. Finally she graduates, and you're so happy she's safe. She brings her boyfriend home to meet you. It's the bear that ate your boyfriend.

Anyway, that's what happened to Gwen Higgins of the schomance series.

finished reading the golden enclaves and idk if this is a hot take but i feel like it had better exploration of the importance of communal unity and the necessity of societal change than like 99% of books that people like to classify as hopepunk these days simply for not just being like "working together is so good, i love community, together we can accomplish so much and change the world for the better <3" and was instead like "yeah, this work is going to be really fucking hard. it's going to suck, and it's going to be unpleasant, and people are going to hate you for doing it. and maybe you'll feel like giving up because it feels like too much, and being complacent and just going along with the status quo would be easiest. but you still need to do it, because it's what needs to be done, and eventually the world will be better for it."

Okay but if the Deadly Education movie does get made, it needs:

all the characters to be dressed in ragged gross overworn clothes. their shirts have holes and stains and their oversized drawstring pants have sloppily sewn extensions and patches

Make these kids look like Disney channel kids surviving a 90's zombie apocalypse

maybe it's just El's unreliable narration + denial about feelings for Orion, but please do not cast an airbrushed heartthrob

Orion is weird and needs a haircut and has a beaky nose, please let him look like a normal person

I would take it as a personal favor if El is permitted to snark via constant voiceover narration

Particularly if her narration directly contradicts what she's doing

'I was too busy with homework to think or do anything else' *staring across the cafeteria at Orion*

very important to me that even after the whole endless pit of hunger & torture of 400 dead children situation gets solved orion is still deeply strange and off-putting like the mix of not being constantly endlessly starving and also no longer being 17 allows him to find more interests but his interests are things like "waterfalls" and "fire, in general". he doesn't listen to music cos it's all just noise to him but he does love the general concept of noise. he likes going to baseball games not because he understands a single thing about the concept of sports or baseball but because he likes the sound and the energy of being in a crowd of thousands of people & also the snacks are good
